A new and exciting history of Kersey ‘Kersey Through the Centuries’ gives us a new and exciting picture of Kersey life through the ages. Based on a broad selection of records, it follows the peaks and troughs of Kersey life and contains true accounts of fascinating and sometimes gruesome events. Kersey’s prosperity peaked in the 15th century at which time a new breed of successful clothiers emerged who became landowners and challenged the aristocratic status quo. Many of the village’s beautiful buildings originate from this period, preserved mainly due to the poverty in later centuries which precluded redevelopment. There are stories of medieval misconduct, religious conflict and changing lords of the manor according to royal whims. The book tracks the fate of Kersey Priory, which was dissolved before the Reformation and reveals the lifestyle of the Augustinian canons who lived there. In the 1600s, Kersey was the home of a prototype feminist lay preacher and found itself at the centre of puritan migration to America. The son of one of the earliest Kersey emigrants to Massachusetts did not find the promised land: he was in Salem just at the wrong time and ended up being burnt as a witch. Then there are sad tales of Kersey folk ending up in the Cosford Workhouse in Semer, from where in the 18th century one young girl escaped, was recaptured and deported to Australia. She was not alone, other Kersey perpetrators of minor crimes also found themselves on prison ships taking them to the other side of the world. A century later, men from Kersey were involved in riots against the cruel regime imposed by Cosford Workhouse. The book explores the harsh fate of many agricultural labourers who signed up to fight in World War I and examines the impact of World War II on the village. The ups and downs of agriculture are also charted. Taxes and tithes were a constant burden on farmers and business owners through the centuries, with anger against the tithe system reaching boiling point as late as the 1930s when fascist blackshirts tried to take advantage of struggling farmers. The author is Yvonne Martin, a Kersey resident and the Local History Recorder for Kersey. She worked in publishing as an editor and writer for 40 years and has always had a keen interest in history. The risk of your property transaction falling-through is probably more likely than you think but your choice of conveyancer can make all the difference. Give yourself the best chance of a successful completion on your home purchase or sale by working in partnership with Holmes & Hills Solicitors' residential property team. Benefit from Holmes & Hills' 85% successful completion rate for property transactions, which is 18% higher than the national average.* What number of property transactions fall-through? Rightmove and other property industry commentators report that, on average across the country, approximately 28% of property transactions fall-through**. It is a much higher percentage than most buyers and sellers expect it to be. This means, subject to your choice of law firm, your transaction faces almost a 1 in 3 chance of falling through. Reduce the risk of your transaction falling-through by benefiting from a 18% higher rate of success Those using Holmes & Hills' conveyancing services benefit from a materially higher successful completion rate compared to the national average. Your transaction has an increased chance of successfully completing when Holmes & Hills is advising and representing you in your property transaction. Why do property transactions fall-through? Your transaction might fall-through for a number of reasons, most of them outside of your control. These include: your buyer finding another property; being unable to secure their mortgage; or a change in their circumstances which means they can no longer proceed with the purchase. Surprisingly, gazumping is still the most common reason for a transaction to fall-through and it has been recently reported in the last year (June 2020 to June 2021) that gazumping is to blame for 38% of failed transactions.*** Benefit from fixed fee packages As well as an increased chance of your transaction successfully completing, Holmes & Hills provides fixed-fee conveyancing quotes with no hidden charges. When you obtain conveyancing quotations from other law firms you may find charges for completing Stamp Duty Land Tax forms, dealing with lenders and leasehold fees. With Holmes & Hills, these items are included within our legal fee. We give you a simple, transparent, fixed-fee quotation. Solving problems through a proactive and pragmatic approach Holmes & Hills has a large team of experienced property lawyers who are supported by Planning Law, property litigation, agricultural and commercial specialists, meaning we resolve problems when they arise and keep transactions on track, securing a successful completion. Partner with Holmes & Hills to secure your transaction By working in partnership with our clients, local estate agents, mortgage brokers, and financial advisors, Holmes & Hills' residential property lawyers will ensure a smooth transaction, whilst protecting your legal interests. Glenn’s Virtual Ultimate Challenge In 2021 Glenn walked just over 3,700 miles, on 6 virtual missions, and to date this year she is 185 miles on the virtual ultimate challenge, presently in Botswana, 9% of the route which has taken over two months, so a very long trek ahead. In early May, as can be seen elsewhere, she will be be walking with JW and AF along the St Edmund Way, 79 miles from Manningtree to Brandon, thereby over 5 days passing through upwards of 15 places in Suffolk, from larger cities to small villages. Her daily mileage will therefore rise from roughly 10 a day to just under 16. The walk will be to raise funds for St Mary's Church, for which a Just Giving website will be set up.

Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline I am very pleased to announce that despite the reduced numbers due to the Covid situation before Christmas, our Chocolate Bingo event still raised over a thousand pounds so a very big thank you to all who supported the event. On 5th December we arrived in Ukraine to snow and temperatures of minus 6 excited to at last being able to deliver the 300+ Christmas Stockings that had been in preparation during the year. We met many children at several schools during the trip and all were delighted to receive the gifts from the UK. Some of the schools still have only outside toilet facilities for both staff and children so we are hoping to possibly raise funds for a future project to have indoor toilets installed. On one day the weather was so bad that the schools were closed so we travelled to the various villages and met the children who had all been waiting for us outside in anticipation of our visit. We visited families in their homes, again many without any inside water (and therefore no toilets either), it was not uncommon for the well supplying water to be at least 60-100 feet from the house and the toilet merely a wooden structure with a “drop hole”. Despite all of this everyone we met was very cheerful and extremely welcoming. In addition to the Christmas presents we were also able to deliver vitamins and school rucksacks for the Children, all of which were donated by supporters of the Charity. Photographs and Videos of the visit can be seen in the gallery section of our website www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk. Thank you to all who continue to support us. Suffolk and North Essex

Providing unrivalled local knowledge, combining traditional service with a modern marketing approach

Phonics Success - 100% AGAIN! Over the last two years we have worked incredibly hard to improve our phonics at Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E primary School which we are proud to announce has culminated in our pupil pass rate reaching 100% for a second year. We are over the moon with this result as it means that children have the very best start to Early Reading at our school. We knew that with the two lockdowns this result was going to be extremely difficult to achieve, despite all the children and parents working incredibly hard on their home learning during these periods of time. However, all the hard work then and even more once the children had rejoined us in the classroom, has paid off. Well done to all! February News from The Cock Inn So off to a new year folks and lets all hope that it’s a better one than the past two years. We managed to get through to Christmas and New Year despite the government. I am not at all political but hospitality was yet again hung out to dry. While we did not receive the closure orders we thought might have happened, we did all receive conflicting messages from No 10. Boris stood there at the lectern suggesting that we carry on as normal, though with caution and respect for others while Prof Whitty advised us to work from home, don’t mix with those you don’t know and prioritise your relationships. Hummmm, well take from that all as you wish but it left the pub industry quieter than normal while staff and customer sickness, Omicron, flu and colds added to the uncertainty. New year was no different. Mr Javid advised us to celebrate new year but to do it ‘outside’. Well not to sure on the weather and temperature where you were but here in Hadleigh it was not at all garden party time, unless you enjoy watching the penguins. Our new years eve party night was cancelled as we tried to do our bit in slowing the spread of Covid over the holiday period. As a consequence we decided to close for a short while at the beginning of January which was extremely disappointing for our regular customers in particular, however we reopened mid month and its all hands to the pumps once again. Fingers crossed that we have the upper hand over the pandemic and 2022 should be a more enjoyable year for all. In a push towards normality we have our Sunday afternoon music Soiree’s back every other week, our novice darts night every Wednesday, the monthly buskers night every first Tuesday and our ever popular pub quiz each second Tuesday. With Sky and BT Sports on tap too with our multi event screen capability and giant pull down screen, we are all set to serve. Come along and enjoy and a big thanks to our many customers who supported the pub last year. The Cock Inn, 89 George Street, Hadleigh Tel 01473 879907 www.thecockinnhadleigh.co.uk

Hadleigh Walkers A group of 10 came on our January walk round Lavenham. The weather was wet and dismal so we’re hoping for better weather in February. February’s walk will be on Saturday 12th. Once again, we have chosen a Hadleigh circular walk.We will leave St Mary’s School at 0930 and progress across country to Doles Farm, Millwood Cottage, Wyncoll’s Farm, Layham Mill, Benton End and the Railway Walk and back into Hadleigh. The walk is a pleasant 8 miles through interesting and varied countryside. We should be back around 1 pm. As the walk is a relatively short one we will only have one refreshment stop. We have reduced the contribution to our website costs back to £1 now that we are again walking regularly and back into positive funds. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658.

It is so easy not think about what happens to all the waste we produce once we’ve put it in the bin. Most of us worry about the amount of plastics we produce and the impact of waste on the environment. So HEAT arranged to have a talk from the SUEZ ‘Energy From Waste’ plant at Great Blakenham. We never imagined how interesting a talk about waste disposal could be! Most of us know that the contents of the blue bin and what we take to the recycling centre goes for recycling, the black bin all goes to the Energy from Waste plant for incineration and the brown bin goes for composting. What we learnt from the talk was that: • Suffolk has virtually no landfill waste any more and incineration is both greener and cheaper than landfill • The plant has saved Suffolk taxpayers £350m and generates electricity for 40,000 homes • The plant disposes of up to 300,000 tons of waste a year (95 truck loads a day of business and household waste) • It costs £19 to dispose of waste in a blue bin and £56 from a black bin and a third of black bin content is food waste • In the next 3-5 years we will see kerbside collection of food waste and glass There were also some messages that we all need to think about and act on: • Preventing waste in the first place by, reusing and recycling is the most effective way of reducing waste – the black bin is the place of last resort! • We must think more carefully about what we put in our blue bins. • 20% of blue bin waste is rejected because it can’t be recycled and 50% of this is because of glass. Glass must always go in the bottle bank and not in blue or black bins. • 1000 disposable nappies a day go into blue bins contaminating the load, they are definitely not recyclable! • The tetra packs used for fruit juices and other liquids cannot be recycled through blue bins. Take to the recycling centre or avoid buying if you can. • For more information go to What goes in my bins? » Babergh Mid Suffolk So, we can all play our part by cutting back on what we put in our bins. This means not buying food with lots of packaging, reusing as much as possible, using our bins correctly, reducing food waste and home composting. Join HEAT’s ‘Plastic Free Hadleigh’ campaign to take individual change to a community action.

Rotary Review CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS – BACK WITH A BANG! After the previous year’s lockdown 2021 saw the resumption of these popular collections albeit with collectors and Father Christmas safely socially distancing. Hadleigh residents ,especially the children welcomed back the float and Father Christmas enthusiastically and with great generosity. Rotary extends a massive THANK YOU to everyone who donated. The House to House produced £1509.33 which is probably an all time record with record collections for most rounds headed by £434.47, an all time one night record. It seemed as though everybody gave double to make up for the 2020 non event. Two days at Morrisons Store produced £412.67 and there were donations of £88.00 to bring the grand total to £2010.00 all of which will go to local charities including Hadleigh Guides, Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding, EACH, St Elizabeth Hospice, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee. A percentage is also retained in the Club’s Charitable Fund for distribution as and when required during the next few months. Of course this event does not just happen and as Hadleigh Rotary Club is so small it does rely on a number of friends of Rotary to help with the collections and members would like to recognise and thank profusely the following: Firstly the men in red - David Walmsley, Richard Whiting (member) and most of all Steve Grimsey. Steve stepped in at the last minute having never played the part before but he was out on six occasions including all the House To House rounds and performed magnificently. A great effort, Steve. Towing duties were shared by Gary Hambling, Steve Blake, George Wyatt and Bernie Munson, Graham Parker (member) whilst collectors were Harry Wilkinson, Claire and Annette Coster, Simon and Kerry Carter, George Wyatt, Jo Parker, Richard Cooley, assisted by members Glen Abbassi, Ian Burne (President), Graham Parker and Ron Jenkins. Many, Many Thanks to all of you! Finally the Club is grateful to Hadleigh Bowling Club for housing the float during the collecting period and to Martin Pratt and family for keeping the float at their farm for the rest of the year. CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES: 1. Members and partners were able to celebrate Christmas 2021 with a lunch at the Bildeston Crown. This was most enjoyable and thanks go to the staff for looking after us so well. 2. A Christmas coffee morning also took place at the Eight Bells. There were mince pies and cake to go with the coffee and again everyone enjoyed themselves - Many thanks Melissa. 3. Moving on to the New Year, the Club’s traditional Champagne Brunch took place at the George, Hintlesham. Again members and partners enjoyed the hospitality of the George and thanks go to the staff. FUTURE PLANS: It is hoped to hold more events again this year but apart from Covid regulations it will depend on how much help the Club can find to supplement the small membership. Of course it would be great if help turned in to new membership. The Club meets at the Eight Bells on 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday of every month for lunch 12.45pm for 1pm. A coffee morning is held once a month at Cobblers usually on the 1st Tuesday at 11am. If you would like to attend one of these or find out more about your local Rotary Club please contact David 01473 827226. Members wish all readers a Very Happy New Year.

Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club The club held its Annual Dinner at the Polstead ‘Brewers Arms’ on Saturday 11th December. All who attended enjoyed an excellent meal followed by a presentation of club trophies. The Malcolm Ward singles trophy was won by David Gradley with runner-up Graham Boon. The doubles trophies were won by Judy Hickford and John Williams with runners-up Kay Flynn and Don Ellis. A special ‘thank you’ was given to Fixtures Secretary Don Ellis who has now retired from the club for his consistent hard work over the past years. Unless otherwise stated by the Government, the club is resuming practices and the odd friendly game where possible at Whatfield Village Hall. If anyone is interested, we will meet at 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings. If you need any further information you can call Graham 07553 262587

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward and Cabinet Member for Environment Dear Residents, I should like to thank you for the invaluable assistance that you have given in advising my team to assist in Tidying up the Town. As I said we rely upon all residents as ‘Our eyes and Ears’ and feedback has been excellent. The Public Realm Team is well on the way to cleaning and removing disgarded waste. I am advised in reality it will take two years to get on top of the problem across Babergh, however the new contracts Team which commenced 1st Nov are doing a fantastic job in the first instance. Hadleigh progress: • I thank the Tidy Town Team for their concerns which we have addressed. We contacted Morrisons and spoke to one of their managers Vicky Bennet who agreed to retrieve Morrisons trolley’s full of rubbish left by the Magdalen Road car park toilets by the end of this week which they have done. I advised if it is still there next week, we would remove and destroy. Co-op seem to very efficient at collecting disgarded trolleys. There is an App called ‘trolleywise’ which covers many of our areas, including Hadleigh. It is extremely easy to use if the App is installed on a mobile phone. Abandoned trolleys can be quickly reported and they will attend and remove them. • I have asked my Public Realm team to clear all litter and broken glass from around the bottle banks again at the Magdalen Rd car park site. • We have also spoken with the clothing bank company, Soex, who have been battling driver sickness (Covid) and have been short staffed. They have now collected the clothing and discarded bags left during the Xmas period around the deposit bank site at the Magdalen Rd car park site. • All banners without planning permission on the High Street car park railings have been removed again. Can I please urge local societies please seek planning permission for sites prior to displaying banners on public railings. • All banners on the bypass and hanging from trees have now been removed and any other street furniture will be removed. There is an ongoing discussion with Ipswich school banner, which is meant to be on private land! Which it does not appear to be. • Pay and Display machines for Hadleigh should shortly be arriving and I am pushing to have these installed by the end of February 2022. • Babergh have a new Team Member who has been brought in Sarah Gilson to deal with the Car Parking Strategy. I am about to have an update from the survey responses to the Parking Consultation and appreciate the detailed information provided by Roger Young. • By the end of January we have commenced the ongoing repair and maintenance of play areas and fencing, if residents have any further requests or concerns, please let me know. • I have requested the cleaning of the offensive graffiti on the park bench by the river at Toppesfield Gardens and the hedges have been cut around the seating area. • The pavement sweeping vehicle which I have requested to come to Hadleigh soonest will be coming early morning to cleanse the High Street and all roads adjoining. Babergh has been named as part of a pilot scheme to allow residents an easier way to shape and influence development in their area. The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced that Babergh and is among 11 areas nationwide to be chosen as part of a pilot scheme to boost participation in neighbourhood planning. The ability to create a Neighbourhood Plan was introduced as part of the Government’s Localism Act 2011, giving communities the opportunity to develop a shared vision for their area. Unlike a parish plan or village design statement, a successful Neighbourhood Plan has statutory weight and once adopted, is used to help decide planning applications. Across Babergh and Mid Suffolk, around 50 parishes have embarked on the Neighbourhood Planning process. To date, 16 Neighbourhood Plans have been successfully adopted, with many others at an advanced stage. The councils will now receive an award of £45,000 in Government funding to go towards a new post, designed to encourage even more people in the districts to engage with the planning system. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are halfway through installing £2.8m worth of green energy measures at their leisure centres – providing the centres with renewable energy and slashing CO2 emissions. Works have completed this week to install a mixture of both solar PV panels and an air source heat pump, at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure (380 solar panels generating 148.2 kW). The changes, carried out by CorEnergy, enable the centre to reduce their demand on the energy grid and begin to transition away from fossil-fuelled heating systems, by powering them with renewables. They are expected to save 269.9 tonnes of CO2e per year - a 5.6% reduction in the councils’ annual carbon emissions – as well as reduce the total amount of energy needed to run the centres. Works were made possible thanks to £1.4m in funding from the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which supports capital energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation projects within public sector non-domestic buildings. The councils also received a £25k Government Low Carbon Skills Fund grant to carry out feasibility work to determine the most appropriate measures for each site. Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding any concerns on environment, planning or any other issue that I can assist with. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson, sian.dawson@babergh.gov.uk

No, this is not an advert for our upcoming production of The Sound of Music, although anything is possible now that Hadleigh Community Choir is celebrating its 10th anniversary. I know, we can’t quite believe it either! Having put safety measures in place, in line with government legislation, we were able to perform our winter concert which went down very well with audience and choir members alike. Hadleigh Community Choir has some great plans for events this year, but my lips are well and truly sealed for now! However, if you enjoy singing, regardless of whether you think you can or not, do come and give us a try. We will welcome you and there are no scary auditions – all are invited to join. We meet and rehearse on a Thursday evening at Hadleigh United Reform Church, next to The Ansell Centre, Market Square, Hadleigh, every Thursday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm (slightly reduced in Covid times) where you will have the pleasure of meeting our Musical Director, Sarah Gallop, a smart young cookie, whose dynamic leadership is both inspiring and infectious. You will also meet Graham Holmes, accompanist extraordinaire. While Covid still abounds, we ask that you take a lateral flow test before coming to rehearsals, wear a mask on arrival and only take it off when seated. By the time this goes to print, we will have started the Spring season, but no matter, you are still more than welcome to join us. Sarah Thompson – Chair of Hadleigh Community Choir

Hadleigh Choral Society Hadleigh Choral Society will be performing Requiem Opus. 9 by Duruflé as part of the programme for the Spring Concert at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Saturday 2 April. Maurice Gustave Duruflé was a French composer born in 1902. He was a schoolboy chorister at Rouen Cathedral and studied piano and organ. At 18 he entered the Conservatoire de Paris and seven years later was nominated assistant organist to Louis Vierne at Notre Dame. As a complete perfectionist, critical of his own work, he refused to record some of his pieces. He was also very conservative about music, as was his wife, MarieMadeleine Chevalier. She too was an accomplished organist. Duruflé completed his most famous work Requiem in 1947 and he dedicated this to the memory of his father. Both he and his wife were seriously injured in a car accident in 1975 and Maurice would never perform again. He never really recovered from his injuries and died in 1986, aged 84. As well as Duruflé and Bernstein the Spring concert will include the work of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Perhaps most famous for his work The Lark Ascending, Vaughan Williams was an English composer, born in 1872. Five Mystical Songs is based on the poems of Welsh-born English poet and Anglican priest, George Herbert, and first performed in 1911 in Worcester. The Spring concert programme was originally planned for March 2020 and Concert Manager, Liz Turnbull, is delighted that, 2 years later, the performance can go ahead. “We will continue to follow the guidelines set out by the Government and make St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh as safe as possible for choir, orchestra and audience. The latest guidelines will be available at the time of booking tickets so please check our website www.hadleighchoralsociety.org.uk for further details. Tickets will be available online, at the Idler Book Shop, 37 High Street, Hadleigh and from members and friends of the Hadleigh Choral Society. Once again, we are extremely grateful to Matthew Douglas Ltd for their support and sponsorship of our Spring concert programme.

The Hadleigh Historian

The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian

Issue 68

February - March 2022

Price £4

Issue 68 (February-March 2022) Newly formed in Hadleigh, the King Guthrum Group is promoting the link between a Danish war leader and the town. According to the historical record and also local tradition, Guthrum is the first named person associated with the Hadleigh as he was buried here in 890, having ruled the Eastern Danelaw for twelve years. The group’s trustees can be seen on the front cover beside ‘Guthrum’s tomb’ in St Mary’s Church. The idea is to bring the community of Hadleigh together to celebrate its heritage through themed events associated with King Guthrum. See https://hadleigh.nub.news for more information and to get in touch, email: kingguthrumgroup@hotmail.com. The eight-part series ‘Made in Hadleigh: Malt’ comes to an end with a look at the only malting house that formerly stood in Benton Street and the people associated with it. Possible remains of the building intrigued the new owner Mark Lawrence, who began investigating the site in his garden. His article ‘Starting to trace the history of our house’ is a good guide finding out about any property when historical documents are not available. Many enquiries about aspects of the town’s history are received by the Editor and two have led to short articles in The Hadleigh Historian. Reader Ian Grutchfield of Hadleigh sent in a photograph of a Mesolithic axe head, which was found in the late 1970s on a footpath near Stockton Close. ‘Look what I’ve found - a lump of old stone!’ gives a brief history, going back many thousands of years, to the Stone Age and also records two other flint-axe heads found here. Margaret Tildesley of Hadleigh has asked about a photograph of her uncle Percy Hayward Caley (1904-1993), which she came across when sorting some family papers. He is shown in the Town Hall in December 1946 at one of the dinners given by the people of Hadleigh as a “Welcome home” to ex-service personnel after the Second World War (1939-1945). Two other pictures of these events are on the magazines back cover. If you can identify any of the people shown, please let the Editor know the details. Another picture feature looks at one of Hadleigh’s oldest houses in ‘Back from the brink: Stone House in George Street’. Linked to the murder featured in Issue 67, ‘An informer at the Post Office’ concerns the network of informers set p across the country at the beginning of the 19th century, members of which passed on information to government authorities about local upheavals fin their particular area. And finally, ‘An unusual country wedding at Semer’ tells of the 155 extra guests invited to a wedding by a Hadleigh solicitor’s future mother-in-law. Issue 68 is now available price £4 at Avis the Newsagent and The Idler Bookshops Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer. A one-year subscription (6 issues and postage) costs £30 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673)

Sudbury & District Citizen’s Advice I keep seeing on the news that my bills could be going up soon. It’s making me really worried, especially as I spent more on Christmas than I should have done. How can I get my spending habits back on track in 2022? A lot of people will be asking themselves this question right now. The good news is there are lots of things you can do to be more in control of your money and better prepared for the future. Firstly, find out exactly what money you have coming in and going out each month. Be realistic about what you need for essentials like food and travel. Then you can set yourself a budget that you can stick to - take a look at the budgeting tool on the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, to help you do this. If any of your bills do go up in the coming year, you can go back to our budgeting tool anytime to create a new plan and stay in control. Our website tips on how to reduce your regular living costs may be helpful if you find you have more money going out than coming in at any point. You should also make sure you’re getting all the income you’re entitled to. Use the income checker on the Citizens Advice website to see if you could be getting more support, such as benefits or government grants. You can also use this to make sure you’re being paid the right wage. If you’ve been using credit cards, your overdraft or store cards for your spending, it’s understandable if these debts are causing you worry. It’s important to prioritise paying your rent or mortgage, plus energy bills and Council Tax first though. Not paying these has the most serious consequences. On the Citizens Advice website, we have advice about which bills you need to prioritise and the support available for paying these and other bills. Once you have planned how to pay your priority bills, the budgeting tool can help you plan how to repay credit cards, overdraft charges and store cards. Everyone’s circumstances are different, particularly when it comes to managing personal finances. If you need more specific support or don’t feel able to manage your situation alone, call out debt helpline – 0800 240 4420. You’re not on your own. If you need advice or information on this or anything else, contact Sudbury & District Citizens Advice. We are providing advice by telephone and email, Monday – Thursday, 10am – 1pm. Please phone 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact

Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band is threatened The Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band has played for local events from the 1980s right through to the onset of Covid pandemic. The Band must now increase its player membership in order to continue as a musical ensemble and return to playing at future local events, concerts and church services. Please, if you can, help preserve one of the few remaining village brass bands in this part of the world. ....If you play (or used to play) a brass instrument and are free on Monday evenings then why not give us a try - even if you don't own an instrument don't worry - we can probably loan you one. ....If you do not play but know someone who does (or used to) then please do tell them about us and our endeavours. If you'd like to, please feel free to turn up at our practice night and see what we are about. Our weekly rehearsals restart at 7.30pm on Monday 7th February at the Elmsett Methodist Church. On the other hand, if you'd like to chat about the prospect of giving the band a try, contact Bob Howe (Band Secretary) on 07786 354018 or by email robertcharleshowe@hotmail.co.uk or Kath Sutton (Chairperson) on 07876 338836 or email kath.sutton@thestocks.me.uk.

Therapeutic Art Dr Cullen’s spectacular photographs in the Hadleigh Boxford Practice have been succeeded by Emma Kerridge-Conium’s colourful work. Emma was born and raised in Hadleigh until she left to study science at university. As a child she loved to draw but faltered when it came to painting for GCSE art. Acknowledging her problem, her High School Art Teacher offered her coloured pencils instead. This was the start of her love of this media which is still her preferred choice for her work. Emma now helps other professional pencil lovers by offering a wide range of materials from her home-based Coloured Pencil Shop. Her work has been successfully displayed and sold in London, at local events and on specific occasions e.g. Hadleigh’s Festival of Gardening and Art and more recently to raise money for the RSPB’s Wildlife Garden at Flatford. The Festival and RSPB project renewed her interest in drawing. Who can forget her exquisite drawings of Cedric Morris’s Irises? Some of her colourful images have also been used to decorate cushions, notelets and bags. Having recently been diagnosed with ME and struggling with the debilitating symptoms for which it is known, her work has taken on a new significance. Emma now uses her illustrations to express the energy that she no longer possesses. The results are vibrant, colourful abstract images which are full of life’s forces. The Practice is very fortunate to have Emma’s work on loan for patients and staff to enjoy. The pictures are also for sale with 10% of the purchase price going to The Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust. This advert is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis Printers, 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk The nature of these monthly columns mean that it can be difficult to comment on the ‘news of the day’ as events often develop at pace. That said, one issue that is likely be become a longstanding challenge is that of rising energy prices for households. The surge in demand for energy that followed the summer reopening of the world’s industrial capacity, various geopolitical pressures, and a series of cold winters, has created a significant pressure on gas prices. As many readers will be aware, this pressure is likely to impact the price we all pay for our energy. To date, the Government’s Energy Price Cap has insulated millions of customers from feeling that increase. However, in April the Price Cap’s level will likely increase again to reflect the sustained increase in the wholesale gas price – which makes up around 41% of an average gas bill. I understand this will be a difficult time for residents which is why I am regularly in contact with Ministers about this worrying matter. The Government has taken action worth more than £4.2 billion so far, and it is supporting vulnerable households through initiatives such as the £500 million Household Support Fund and Warm Home Discount worth up to £150 this Winter. Of course, many homes in South Suffolk are heated by oil rather than gas. Following the sale of one of our smaller local distributors, many residents will be looking for a new supplier. I would encourage all customers to shop around to find the most cost-effective supply available locally. Although I am not aware of any current plans to regulate or cap the price of domestic heating oil, in the UK we do have a reduced VAT rate of 5% on oil, and we also pay a reduced rate of 5% when certain energy-saving products are installed in our homes. I will continue to liaise with Ministerial colleagues to ensure that as many actions as possible are taken to reduce the pressure on consumers, and hope that positive news will arrive shortly in this regard.

01473 827004 / 01787 320303 Important changes to the Highway Code Hadleigh Cycling Club is keen to encourage all drivers to check out the changes to the Highway Code which came into force on 29th January. There is new focus around a ‘hierarchy of road users’ designed to give the vulnerable a greater degree of protection and clarity provided over who has right of way at junctions. The hierarchy is as follows; 1. Pedestrians (in particular children, elderly adults and those with disabilities) 2. Cyclists 3. Horse riders 4. Motorcyclists 5. Cars 6. Vans/minibuses 7. Large passenger vehicles/HGVs Drivers are advised that they: • Should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which their vehicle is turning. • Should not cut across cyclists or horse riders going ahead when turning into or out of a junction or changing direction or lane, to prevent “left hook” collisions. • Should open car doors using the “Dutch reach” method, with the hand on the opposite side to the door they are opening. This makes drivers turn their heads to look over their shoulders and reduces the likelihood of “dooring” a passing cyclist. • Should leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds. The full list of changes can be found on the ww.gov.uk site. The Club runs a social ride on Sundays in the winter which usually begin at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. The ride is weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub or visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Orchard Barn News http://www.orchardbarn.org.uk DIY building materials – oh yes you can! Today we mostly rely on manufactured materials to build new homes, but their cost is spiralling, and their manufacture and transport has a negative effect on our environment. With global climate change in mind, it is more than ever essential to find alternative resources and methods which will minimise harmful effects. There is much we can learn from our ancestors who made their own buildings from materials in their local landscape. Yes, it takes longer, but the materials are either free or low cost, transport is minimal and small scale manufacture does not harm the environment, nor does their use or disposal. The skills needed are relatively easy to learn, and mostly what is needed is just a fresh pair of eyes, practical application and a willingness to learn. Wood: This is probably the best known natural building material and in reinstating our 1580s Long House at Orchard Barn, the frame of the house is made of wood, with trees sourced locally. Instead of being cut up for firewood, we have locked up the carbon embodied in these trees by converting them into a building. We have also recycled some of the 500 year old timbers by repairing them. The pegs which hold the frame together are hand-made of local oak, and the roof tiles (shingles) will also be made by hand from wood. Clay: We have reclaimed (and cleaned up) many of the clay bricks from the original Long House. Some dated from Tudor times, have been used in our reinstated building. Clay is just below the top soil in many places in Mid Suffolk. At Orchard Barn the clay for the Tudor bricks was dug out of the ground on site forming our pond. Even the earth mortar (that held the old chimney together) was made of clay and sand. We have harvested the earth mortar to use again when we rebuild the chimney (hopefully later this year). Clay can also be mixed with water and straw to form the daub in wattle and daub walls. The daub dries extremely hard and the straw content acts as insulation. If you are interested in learning about traditional building methods using natural, sustainable materials, go to our website to find out about our course programme, or email Carole at carole.orchardbarn@gmail.com if you’d like to get involved as a volunteer. Hadleigh Art Club Activities We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance/constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group... We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5, due in May. There is a list of weekly topics but these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current weeks) while others will be working on their own subject. Here is the program for February 01/02/2022 - Mists and misty scenes; for example, mist over water at dawn. 08/02/2022 - Hadleigh windows - the town has lots of different styles - look along High Street or George Street for example. Look at the pargetting too. 15/02/2022 - Portraits - using a model; or members taking turns for quick sketches. 22/02/2022 - Rocks and water. Running water or still. Waves crashing over rocks. 01/03/2022 - Silhouettes of objects or people - or implied shapes as in shadow writing.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

It’s time for a cat’s eye view of SESAW with a story just as good as Ken’s dog-tale last month. We recently had the delightful experience of reuniting with his owner, a cat that was missing for about eighteen months. Kind people fed him until new neighbours realised he belonged to no one nearby. They asked Mother to check him for a microchip – and he was reunited with one happy owner who had given up hope of seeing their beloved pet again. If you befriend a stray please ask a vet or rescue centre to scan for a chip and have your own cats microchipped, we are just as important to our humans as dogs are to their owners. Speaking of canines, we have a friendly pair of seven year old dachshunds looking for a home where they can be absolutely spoilt. Dougie and Hazel love their cuddles but tend to tell other dogs off so would be better as the only pets. Hazel is rather bossy and Dougie's sight is poor but that does not stop him, although sometimes he returns from walks in someone’s arms! If you can offer this delightful twosome a loving home with a very secure garden, please phone for an appointment to meet them. That’s enough from me, rest assured the chatty Chihuahua will be back next time, hopefully having learned that people sometimes need to read the feline point of view and a prime example of the superior species is me, Ollie (the Black) Cat. Meet Up Mondays Pedestrians who walk pass The George on Mondays between 11.00 and 12.00 may have noticed a group of 10-12 people sitting on the left chatting to each other. This is Meet Up Mondays where we enjoy free tea or instant coffee, thanks to Hadleigh Town Council - speciality coffees to be paid for. For those of you who might like to come in and see what's what, we would be very pleased to welcome you. No commitment, pop in if you feel like it and if you don't, no harm done.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club It was lovely to start the new year with an interesting talk on the Revival of Benton End by Lucy Skellorn their Research Assistant. She spoke to a full meeting informing us of past history and future plans for this colourful house and gardens. To keep up to date with developments of both art and garden courses in the future why not sign up for their news letter www.bentonend.co.uk. In these difficult times some of the safest places to be are our in the garden or on the allotment, if you are fortunate enough to have one. Perhaps some winter pruning of apple trees and some manure to spread. Crops like garlic, broad beans and onion sets should already be planted and only need minimum attention with a little weeding. In the garden if you have any hellebores it pays to remove all the leaves by end of February, this will help stop the spread of the infection hellebore Black Death. New leaves will appear in the spring and any flowers will be more visible. If you were given an amaryllis for Christmas it should have been kept on a well lit windowsill and now be on the point of flowering. As soon as the flowers appear it should be moved to a cooler spot, not allowed to dry out, and fed every ten days with a tomato feed. The challenge will be to get it to flower again next year. Keep feeding the birds and give them fresh water every day. Our February speaker is from Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue on 14th the usual time of 7.30 in the Guildhall. Visitors most welcome £4, members £2. The competition is a Posy of Spring Flowers, plus our raffle, we hope to see you then.

The Hadleigh Community Forum meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Hadleigh Pool & Leisure Centre. Meeting dates, our Terms of Reference and Minutes are available on request from Jess Janas. We share information, explore ideas, facilitate new ventures and events. Representatives attend from the following groups: voluntary social care, community organisations, residents, businesses, Town and District Council. Anyone is welcome but please let us know if you plan to attend. In the absence of a permanent Chair there is a roster of volunteers to lead the monthly meetings. Tuesday 11th January, Chair Jan Devey - There were 20 attendees and three apologies for absence. Traditional formalities were speedily dealt with so that group reps could give their monthly updates. Hadleigh Town Council No rep or update available. https://hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk staff@hadleightowncouncil.co.uk Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council The group welcomed Richard Baldwin whose role within the DC is Assistant Manager – Leisure, Sport and Wellbeing. He or a colleague plan to attend future meetings and would also be happy to act as a conduit to other department within the DC. Visit Hadleigh Jane Snowdon reported that Visit Hadleigh’s Annual Report is on its way. There are plans for the town to participate in the free, national, annual Heritage Festival from 9th -18th September. Historical developments and inventions will be highlighted. Further details at the February meeting. A further reminder that services, organisations, events and reciprocal website links can be posted on their website. www.visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk Tidy Town Elaine Pulham reported their insurance is only valid if they work in groups. The recycling area at Magdalen Road car park is particularly unsightly with a lot of rubbish around the bins. This constitutes fly tipping. Volunteer levels are good with many more enquiries. The High School has yet to respond to Elaine’s request for a student to speak on an appropriate topic to the Forum. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Jan Devey reported that so far 30.000 jabs have successfully been given with the last session at St Mary’s Church on December 22nd. There is no plan to hold any further large scale sessions but rather ‘invitation only’ vacs at the Practice during working hours. Emma Kerridge’s art work is now on display there. The PPG is currently working with the Practice to improve the online appointment booking facility. Once this has been achieved, the Group will campaign to encourage more people to make their appointments using this method. Jan confirmed that face to face appointments are available and patients will be seen by a doctor if they request it. St Mary’s Church:- Jim Wilding gave a full update on the restoration work which will include the magnificent vaulted ceiling in the Sacristy. Two important meetings coming up; the Re-Ordering gathering on 27th January to take plans forward and on 13th January the Diocese will discuss the restoration and future use of the Deanery Tower. Hilary Ferry reported on the Lime Tree Project. This will include four timeline display boards destined to be shown consecutively beside the remains of the 200 year old tree trunk. Surprisingly, Babergh Planning require £300, to give their consent to publicly display them. Richard (BDC) offered to look into it as the boards did not constitute an advertisement. Jess Janas was pleased to report that BBC Radio Suffolk’s early morning Faith slot with Sarah Lilley on Sun 16th January want to feature the use of St Mary’s for the Covid vac sessions. Hadleigh Environmental Action Team – HEAT Paul Hodgkin reported on their many ‘green’ activities occurring in the town these included; the erection of 80 swift boxes with tweeters, working with BDC to clear 3 – 4 acres of the Fuzz of diseased elms and, every other Wednesday until Easter, increasing the natural habitat on the Railway Walk. The River Brett Group has been monitoring and recording the water quality. This is an ideal family activity and an enjoyable way to get youngsters involved. HEAT has applied to Hadleigh Town Council for a grant to monitor sewage outflows. A number of businesses have signed up to help Hadleigh become plastic-free by reducing the use of one-off plastics. There is a community allotment in Gallows Hill. It is not regularly monitored but if support is required, email HEAT. There is a programme for planting 200+ trees by volunteers and BDC.

Hadleigh Pool & Leisure (Abbeycroft Leisure) Tracey Loynds gave a comprehensive, positive report on the success of the Hadleigh Leisure Centre’s activities one year after opening. This included an impressive free school meal with activity scheme for youngsters during lockdown. Assisted by Angela Gregg, over 450 Christmas ‘Cook at Home’ boxes with instructions and a free book were delivered to families in need. There was also 90 useful, fun days of safely cooking and eating together outdoors. Supportive telephone calls have been made to people waiting for operations to help their mental and physical wellbeing and ultimately their recovery. It is hoped that blood donations will begin at the HP&L Centre. Hadleigh Opportunities & Challenges Revisited Mike Turley suggested that the group return to the subject and the points raised at a 2020 workshop. To give members time to refresh their memories, these will be circulated and discussed at the February meeting. Outcomes should link into the Neighbourhood Plan. A O B In the absence of a HTC rep an update on the Lorry Routes through the town will be requested for the February meeting. They will also be asked why and when the barriers around one end of the Market Place bench will be moved. Huw Roberts said a small group had been set up to promote the heritage link between Hadleigh and Guthrum, King of East Anglia. More details about the King Guthrum Group at the February meeting. Tracey reported that, sadly, the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance has issued a Dissolution Notice as allowed by its Terms & Conditions. In 2014 Hadleigh was the first Suffolk Town to be formally recognised as working to become a dementia friendly community. All remaining funds will be split equally between two appropriate groups: The Abbeycroft Leisure Together Tuesday programme and The Ansell Centre Charity, Ansell Memories Café programme thus ensuring residual funds are spent for the support of those living with dementia in our community. Jan raised the question of the fractured defibrillator arrangements in Hadleigh i.e their whereabouts, maintenance and public knowledge of their use. Jan and Jess will investigate and use the media to engage the public and try and improve the situation. Tracey will explore the possibilities for short training sessions to improve the public’s knowledge of, and confidence in, their use. Richard has agreed to take back to BDC the Forum’s accelerating frustration at the lack of work needed to remove the unsightly barriers from around various trees in Magdalen Road car park. This unacceptable, unwelcoming sight has been there for years and a solution should be found. Sarah reported that the Christmas Present Trust had another successful Christmas day with 55 attending the lunch and enjoying the entertainment and 38 deliveries being made. Grateful thanks were offered to the team of volunteers and, of course, Sarah and Simon. Sales of the Hadleigh Tea Towel greatly helped the funding. Jane has an old 35mm slide projector and scanner with USB connection. It could be offered free for a donation to the Hadleigh Thrift Shop or may be useful to The Hadleigh Archive. NEXT MEETING: Tues 8th February 2022 @ 4:15pm. Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Chair: Sarah Thompson. Apologies please to: jessicanevard@btinternet.com or Text 07873 484252.

New, free, you: these are the most used words in advertising Well, we’ll come to them in a minute; in the meantime, Jazz Galore is back in business and looking for events where they can entertain with a more varied selection of popular numbers than most groups will provide. Two years ago they had eight events booked, between Easter Monday and midSeptember, and all were cancelled; apparently some bug was going about. You might have heard of it. Last year was a bit better, two events to play at. But hopefully this year things will be back to normal. So for a six-piece band with a good reputation that won’t break the bank, ring 07874 034390. Now, on to the new and free for you. Jazz Galore would provide a full afternoon of music but if you would like just one hour, with a small group, in Hadleigh or the surrounding villages with two, maybe three, musicians, then you might like Blue Horizon. Clarinet and a guitar or two makes a good combination. And what would they like in return? Let’s say a cup of tea and a bun and if there’s a few quid left over in the kitty, that would be welcome. Ok, not exactly free but not far off. Ring 07563 573190.

Panto’s On… Oh no it’s not… Oh yes it is! Pardon the cliché, but that’s what preparing for this year’s panto has been like. Uncertainty around the ever-changing rules, trying to work out how to alter a tried and tested process to fit into a new venue versus the desire, if not need, of our lovely cast to do something “normal” has kept the HADS Committee on their toes since casting took place in September last year. The final decision was made on Friday last, and so we’re definitely off the see the Wizard in February. The script for Wizard of Oz was written by two of our young talented stars, Celsey Goodyear and Eli Gregory, who have taken the spirit of the original story and adapted it with flair to modernise it and turn Hadleigh into the land of Oz. Some recent changes had to be made so that, in traditional HADS irreverent style, we could have a laugh at the beast that is Covid, but the Committee is sure that the audience will be impressed with the confident writing, humour and inclusion of old and modern songs. Casting, back in September 2021, gave the Directors, Russell Allen and Jo Sheldrake, a bumper crop of willing thespians. Some people have returned from previous shows, but some newbies are joining in the fun for the first time. Many have commented on how interesting it’s been to see how a show is put together and have enjoyed playing their part. This year, the Committee had to move the venue for the panto to Elmsett Village Hall for economical reasons, but this has provided the silver lining of allowing us to rehearse with a full stage much earlier. We are of course ever grateful to the Hadleigh United Reform Church for hosting our rehearsals last year. The music accompanying our panto will be provided again by the Live Panto Band. Their performance this year will be bittersweet following the sad passing of their bass player Tim Clarke in 2021 and his friends on stage will miss his cheeky grin at every quip and gaff. I’m sure he will be with us in spirit as we harmoniously caterwaul our way through our songs. As usual, the performance is made up of 2 acts with a 20-minute intermission. We will provide refreshments and there will be a raffle with our usual mix of eclectic prizes, so please bring your purses. We have put several measures in place to protect not only our cast and crew but also the audience. We have reduced the numbers of seats in the hall and will encourage gaps between family groups. The number of performances has been reduced from 4 to 3 over 2 days and we’re including the use of masks and sanitiser in the show. As a result, we really hope that you can make the slightly longer journey to join Dorothy and her faithful dog as they wend their way along the yellow brick path to Oz on Friday 25th at 7.30pm and Saturday 26th February 2022 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets from Keith Avis Newsagents, Elmsett Village Store or www.hads.webs.com

Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Hadleigh East Urban Extension Area - Phase 2 Planning Application Last December 2021, Babergh’s planning committee voted in favour to grant hybrid planning permission for a proposed 11.98Ha residential development of 273 dwellings, 7.64Ha for employment uses and pre-school site. This Phase 2 of the Hadleigh East Urban Extension Area (HEUEA) is part of Babergh’s housing core strategy to be located on land South of Tower Mill Lane/East of Frog Hall Lane.

68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF kelvin@keithavis.co.uk

Need a Vinyl Banner? Banners have a multitude of uses, such as advertising, corporate, street campaigns, charity and sporting events. Printed full colour on 450g Quality PVC and eyeletted Need urgently? No problem, we can offer a same day service!

Just call 01473 823366 Within Babergh, this site was considered strategic and of district wide significance whilst remaining a key new homes site within Hadleigh. Also, it will make a significant contribution in meeting Babergh’s housing needs in a sustainable and accessible location. The development will deliver the full, and much needed, 35% of affordable housing (96 no 1, 2, and 3-bed dwellings), as well as 177 no for the open market. These latter dwellings will consist of a mix of 2, 3, 4, and 5-bed properties with appropriate parking needs and EV charging connectivity. I am pleased with this decision as I hope it will address the housing shortfall which helps prevent many young people and service families in the town who wish to settle in their own homes here. The land area reserved for employment uses amounts to 5.5ha and is considered necessary to support meeting the district’s overall employment land requirements at the present time. Other land on the development will be set aside for public open space and neighbourhood equipped play area facilities. It was reassuring to see how the developer (Persimmon) has considered planned open space landscaping with a village green area at its centre. I was glad to see Babergh officers working hard with Persimmon to address the many comments and objections received for the initial application in 2019. In response to concerns about the impact on our roads, schools, health centre, etc, the proposed development is accompanied by an agreed commitment by the developer to an extensive financial package. These S106 payments by the developer total over £3.566m in contributions, to cover Early Years through 6th Form Education (£2.3m), Health (£157k), Sports Facilities (£98k), and interestingly £50k towards Benton Street improvements. There will also be enhanced safety features for pedestrians and riders installed along Tower Mill Lane. These benefits will make Tower Mill Lane a safer and more attractive route for pedestrians and cyclists to directly access the town centre, thereby encouraging sustainable travel to and from the application site with all that implies for access to services Full details of this planning application can be found on the BDC planning search portal under vide reference DC/19/05419. Step inside Little Hall to discover a house which mirrors the changing fortunes of Lavenham. Positioned in a prime location on the market place and built in the 14th century for wealthy clothiers its history can be traced from the starkness of the middle-ages to its “modernisation” at the height of the cloth industry’s prosperity and through its decline in the 18th and 19th century to the present day restoration by the Gayer Anderson twin brothers. Restored by them in 1935 and housing their eclectic mix of paintings and objects from around the world, the house and garden retain the feel of a family home with beautiful furnishings and fascinating artefacts. Little Hall is now an independent accredited museum owned by Suffolk Buildings Preservation Trust and has been open to the public for over forty years, throughout that time run entirely by volunteers. If you would like to be a part of the Little Hall story, we would love to hear from you. You can email us at recruit@littlehall.org.uk or check out our website www.littlehall.org.uk for lots of information about the house and volunteering. French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, it is time for us all to look forward to this new year of 2022, in the best positive way we can. For all of us at French’s we can only hope for a less stressful year and with more help and financial support coming our way. Lucy our therapy dog has been very busy with her work at the farm, as you can see in the photo, Lucy thinks she is helping with the hay. For the winter, Lucy has some brilliant overalls that she wears, which keep her dry and warm while she is out in all elements at the farm. Her least favourite thing is the heavy wet mud, but she doesn’t like to miss out, so is always there by our side, normally soaked and covered in mud, hay and straw. When Lucy is not up the farm, she goes out to visit people who are lonely, or spends time with those who have depression, or suffer with physical health problems. In this photo she is looking all clean and smart, in her best winter going out coat and is ready to pay a couple of elderly ladies a welcoming visit, Lucy usually likes to include a cuddle, as she loves giving a big hug, bless her. Now going back to hoping for less stress this year for me, I am going to sound like a broken record, but....I need more helpers, one being in the shape of a man who has an hour or two once a week to come up and help with jobs like the fencing, any other repairs and helping take round bales of haylage out to the fields. I am in need of help from some ladies who would like to improve their fitness levels, as well as coming to help care for our beautiful animals. Everyone loves being up the farm in the summer, but it takes someone who is dedicated and reliable to turn up when it is wet and cold, those few ladies we have are my troupers and a solid part of my team. Dr John Flather and David Jacobs have stuck with us over the last two years that we have been in Castlings Heath and I cannot thank them enough, for all the hard work they put in each week on their chosen days. Yes it has been two years, so another thank you must go out to Debra and Andrew the land owners. Right, back to sounding like a broken record again, can someone please help us with putting up our shed, that is still sitting in its box nearly 3 months after it was delivered. We need someone who knows what they are doing, or a company who can spare some hours in return for cakes, beer, wine, hugs, great publicity for their business, pick which you would like, just please come and help, this is a desperate woman calling out here, HELP NEEDED TO PUT OUR SHED UP. Our fund raising ladies will be sitting down soon to start planning our events for 2022. If you have any ideas of something we can do, that you know people would like to attend, please get in touch with me and I will pass your details onto Sharon, our event’s organiser. Last year our open day and the quiz night were enjoyable and a success. Here is a photo of me (Jann) with Janet Hodges excepting a great Golf prize for our Christmas raffle, which was also a success with good prizes, so let’s see what we can do to add to our events for this year. A big thank you must go to Pets at Home for supporting French’s Care Haven by being Martlesham’s Charity of the year, for the last two years. That has come to an end now and sadly they will not be using this way to fund raise anymore, as they are changing their fundraising format. French’s is a charity on your doorstep. Can you help, either with time, donations, or sponsorship? You are welcome to come along and meet our animals. Call me for an appointment – Jann on: 07747 755556 or email: jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk Website: frenchscarehaven.org.uk

Sudbury Dramatic Society – A Bunch Of Amateurs Sudbury Dramatic Society is once again back on track, after the postponement of the Quay Christmas pantomime, and is working hard on the March 2022 Quay Theatre production, A Bunch of Amateurs by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, which is on at The Quay from Tuesday 1st to Saturday 5th March at 7.45pm Washed-up Hollywood star, Jefferson Steel is deceived by his agent into playing King Lear at, or he so he believes, Stratford Upon Avon. He slowly realises that he is actually about to play with an amateur company in the small English town of Stratford St Mary with an enthusiastic and passionate group of people who are working hard to save their theatre and are hoping a famous face can swell their coffers. Expecting a suite at a fancy hotel, the Hollywood actor finds himself lodging in a bed and breakfast and expected to perform Shakespeare in a barn. The arrogant, demanding actor, once top of the Hollywood A list, struggles with the ignominy of it all. The play shows the comical, jealous and adoring efforts of the group as they slowly get under Jefferson’s skin and start to change his outlook on life. A Bunch of Amateurs leads up to some small sections of Shakespeare’s King Lear being performed by the cast in full costume on a cobbled together set, which the audience see gradually taking shape during the play. A Bunch of Amateurs is directed by Belinda Hasler, who had to postpone the production from November 2020 due to the pandemic, and is delighted to finally be ‘all systems go’ with an excellent cast, ready for a March production! A Bunch of Amateurs is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 1st to Friday 5th March at 7.45pm and tickets are available from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.com or via www.sudburydramatic.com.

Women’s Cycle Tour inspired over 1,200 young people across Suffolk to cycle and scoot! In recognition of the Women’s Cycle Tour completing its final stage of the race in Suffolk this summer, Active Suffolk partnered with the Most Active County Partnership, Suffolk County Council, Abbeycroft Leisure, West Suffolk Council, East Suffolk Council and Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s to offer local primary schools the chance to complete a challenge, which would support their pupils to engage in more physical activity. The AJ Bell Women’s Cycle Tour came to an end on Saturday 9th October where the professional riders raced from Haverhill to Felixstowe. Schools along the route were invited to take part in a weeklong challenge where pupils were tasked with clocking up time spent on their bikes and scooters, equating to that of the women racing in the final stage of the tour. Specifically designed posters were created and sent out to the schools who signed up to the challenge. The posters displayed the route of stage six of the Women’s Tour across Suffolk with towns and villages along the route being highlighted. With the women estimated to take 4.5 hours to cycle from Haverhill to Felixstowe, the route was divided into five minutes blocks for the children to complete. Every time a pupil cycled or scooted to school, at home or in school, they could colour in a block on the route. The aim was for classes to see if they could make it all the way from Haverhill to Felixstowe in a week. Shan Bendall, Project Officer at Active Suffolk said: “Hosting such a high-profile sporting event like the Women’s Tour, was something we were very proud of. We felt it was important that local schools celebrated this with their pupils to inspire more local children and their families to consider engaging in more physical activity. We were really pleased with the response and had 30 local schools sign up to the challenge, engaging 1,200 pupils in more physical activity! The aim was to encourage classes in the participating schools to collectively complete 4.5 hours of cycling or scooting which was the predicted travel time of the women’s tour, however many classes not only completed this, but they completed the return journey too! In total over 90 hours of cycling and scooting was recorded from children aged 4- 11 years old” The Active Schools project in Babergh, Mid Suffolk and West Suffolk is delivered by Active Suffolk and the project brings together Primary Schools, key partners, and the wider community to work collaboratively to support the growing issues of childhood excess weight and physical inactivity among young people, whilst also improving physical and mental wellbeing and school attainment. The Women Tour challenge was born out of the Active Schools project and working with the Most Active County Partnership, schools from across the County were invited to be involved. In addition to the positive impact this challenge had on the physical activity levels of pupils during this time, all participating schools were also entered into a prize draw where Westfield Primary, St Gregory Primary and Grundisburgh Primary were randomly selected to win a day of cycle coaching for their school with former BMX nation champion, John Stockwell. A big thank you to all who signed the petition or wrote in to Hadleigh Town Council supporting the removal of the designated lorry route through the middle of town. Even in the very short time available to us, nearly 250 residents added their names. At a meeting of the Town Council on 16 December 2021, Councillors were formally handed the petition and received feedback about residents’ anger and frustration at the unnecessary congestion caused by the lorries, damage to the old houses and roads on the route, pavements damaged by huge lorries as they have to circumvent cars on narrow crowded roads, the dangers for pedestrians and cyclists, and pollution research highlighting the harmful impact of diesel particulates on adults and, in particular, the long-term effect on young lungs. The Councillors voted unanimously to respond to Suffolk County Council’s consultation and ask for the removal. Before the bypass was built, the roads through Hadleigh from Gallows Hill to Bridge Street, along part of the High Street, and up Angel Street and Lady Lane were the only way to go to and from Ipswich. For no good reason these roads have remained as a designated route for heavy lorries when for decades lorries have been able to simply bypass Hadleigh on the A1071. Any lorries needing to access the Lady Lane industrial estate have easy access from the bypass via the top end of Lady Lane and do not need to drive through the town. Hadleigh is united about removing unnecessary lorries from the middle of town, and we now wait for the decision from Suffolk County Council, which, by any logic, would be to remove the designation. Councils chosen for pilot to ensure neighbourhoods have say on planning Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have today been named as part of a pilot scheme to allow residents an easier way to shape and influence development in their area. The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced today (Wednesday) that Babergh and Mid Suffolk are among 11 areas nationwide to be chosen as part of a pilot scheme to boost participation in neighbourhood planning. The ability to create a Neighbourhood Plan was introduced as part of the Government’s Localism Act 2011, and gives communities the opportunity to develop a shared vision for their area. Unlike a parish plan or village design statement, a successful Neighbourhood Plan has statutory weight and, once adopted, is used to help decide planning applications. Across both districts, around 50 parishes have embarked on the Neighbourhood Planning process. To date, 16 Neighbourhood Plans have been successfully adopted, with many others at an advanced stage. The councils will now receive an award of £45,000 in Government funding to go towards a new post, designed to encourage even more people in the districts to engage with the planning system. Cllr Clive Arthey, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for Planning, said: “This is marvellous news and will help us work with even more local communities to ensure they have a say on developments within their neighbourhoods and support those who want to be more active in the planning process to help shape their communities for the future.” Cllr David Burn, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for Planning, said: “I welcome this funding boost for our work in engaging our local towns and parishes and supporting them to be more active and involved in community-led planning for their areas. Neighbourhood planning helps everyone to play a direct role in shaping their local area and I look forward to supporting even more communities in having their say in the months and years ahead.”

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Well, I wonder who spotted my ‘deliberate mistake’ in my January blog? It just shows that people who eavesdrop are setting themselves up for a fall! ‘Sorry’ everyone and especially my apologies to Chapelstone, the builders who have re-roofed the Centre during the Christmas holidays. I gave out the wrong name last time. After 30 years of wear and tear the old, dirty, somewhat leaky roof was removed and beautiful new panels cut and fitted. The old lead flashings have been replaced with galvanised steel that won’t buckle and puncture over time. Bravely the men lifted some of the insulation over the office ceiling to inspect the water damage. The list of little corpses and skeletons they found is rather shocking, but the best find was a huge wasps’ nest. On closer inspection it proved to have been built around an old bees’ nest, complete with honey. You can’t say the Shelley Centre doesn’t welcome all and sundry! As usual with our client base we wait an extra week from the start of term to open up for riders. So I cannot report how the start of this term has begun, since we don’t know at deadline time whether our riders and volunteers are returning. Let’s hope they are and that all my readers are keeping well too (I hear that there has been a huge influx of the virus since I last wrote). On the residents’ news, all the horses and ponies are safe and keen to get back in the arena. Their fields are mud pies once again and our wonderful maintenance team is having a sticky time of it. Amazingly the snowdrops are showing through and we can begin to think of better times ahead. I hope you dear readers can too. Website: shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

WEA - Adult Learning Within Reach AGM AND TALK at Stoke by Nayland Village Hall, Thursday 10th March 2022, 2.30 pm. From Gravel Pits to Nature Reserve: Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Lackford Lakes - A short illustrated talk by Beth Baker Beth, one of our long-standing members, is an occasional volunteer with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust at the ‘Lackford Lakes’ Reserve just outside Bury St. Edmunds. Beth will talk about SWT reserves including the first one at Redgrave & Lopham Fen, explaining the development of Lackford Lakes over the last 30 years, highlighting other notable SWT reserves to visit in south Suffolk and finishing with news on developments in the Trust. Lackford Lakes is well-known for sightings of kingfishers, but is lucky enough to welcome lots of other wildlife including: otters, deer, marsh harriers and, for one summer, a migrating osprey. This will all be illustrated with a number of photos mainly taken by Beth’s husband David. Everyone is welcome to this free talk. Tea, coffee and biscuits served.

Poetry Corner On A Ledge We know we’re living on a ledge. It’s dangerous and scary in peril on the very edge, we’re permanently wary. They rang the siren long ago when we were sitting pretty, relaxed and going with the flow, snubbing their subcommittee. When clouds appeared in a distant sky, we took umbrellas with us. We told ourselves they’d keep us dry and wondered why the fuss. Now as our ledge begins to crack, we feel afraid, but can’t go back. By Simon Haines

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) The Practice has administered 30,000 jabs since January. There is no plan to carry out any further large scale vac sessions but rather continue any necessary jabs during working hours at the Hadleigh Practice. The appropriate patients will be invited. The Art Exhibition at the Hadleigh Practice has been changed and work by Emma Kerridge-Conium is now on display. Dr Cullen, the previous exhibitor, sold four of his photographs with 10% of the purchase price going to The Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust. The PPG is currently working with the Practice to improve the online appointment booking facility. Stoke By Nayland Golf Club On Wednesday, Jan 5th, bright sunshine and a chilly breeze welcomed 58 players for the first monthly Stableford of 2022 on a very wet, but still very playable Gainsborough course. Perhaps not surprisingly with the ground so wet, we saw no repeat of the high 40s scores of the pre-Christmas period, But it was very tight at the top, with two players in Division 1 and three players in Division 2 all coming home with 37 points and only separated by countback. In Division 1, Allen Smith just edged out John Smith. And in Division 2, the honours went to John Russell, who leapfrogged John Gove and Norman Davidson at the very last hole with a birdie 2 for 5 points and won it on countback. Winner of nearest the pin was Barry Hitchcock who ran it up to 18 inches from the pin on the 7th hole.

What’s Inside A Shelterbox? ‘What can I give him, poor as I am?’ The words from In the Bleak Midwinter somehow reflect what is going on in the life of a ShelterBox. As I write this article, news of the volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami in Tonga and Fiji are a stark reminder of how devastating such occurrences can be. And yet in the midst of these incidents, some things remain a familiar beacon. Like those of the green boxes supplied by the global charity ShelterBox. Back in December, members of Hadleigh URC created a wonderful nativity scene from the items found in the box. The tent provided the backdrop to the Christmas story and was seen by many people over during the season. Four classes from local schools also visited the church, and the URC raised awareness of what ShelterBox stands for. In addition to awareness, the church raised enough money to purchase at least 3 of these boxes that provide urgent protection for people in disaster areas all over the world. Bearing in mind that each box costs around £590, that is a mark of notable success and Hadleigh URC would like to thank all those who visited the nativity and supported the cause. One of the main factors of ShelterBox that sets it apart from other global charities is that you can track your box. Whilst you cannot necessarily dictate where you want your box to go, (ShelterBox respond swiftly to areas of need be they weatherrelated disasters, poverty or war) nevertheless it is possible to see where the box ends up. For more information, please contact ShelterBox via their website www.shelterbox.org or phone 0300 0300 500

Hadleigh Community Primary HSA Fundraising: With Christmas now officially over, the HSA Committee have started excitedly looking forward to events taking place in 2022. We were not able to run our fabulously popular Christmas Hamper Event last year but we have not given up! We will be looking to organise our hampers this year in time for Easter. If you are a local business perhaps you would like to donate a small gift for us to put in our hampers? We promote local businesses in our Newsletters, on our social media and on our noticeboard at school and we are very grateful for any help received. If you are a local resident or a parent/carer of one of the children at HCPS we would love your participation through the purchase of tickets and the donation of gifts. Our hampers are famous for their contents and we have had so many grateful winners! If you are able to donate a small gift or support us in any way, please contact office@hadcps.uk Thank you to all involved! HCPS HSA. Sports: On Wednesday 12th January 2022, our Year 6 football team took part in the English Football League Cup at Ipswich Town Football Club. Before the competition took place, the team were given the opportunity to go on a tour of ITFC, including visiting the main pitch. We were placed into Group B where we played matches against Long Melford, Sidegate, Britannia and Cedarwood. After some excellent performances on the pitch from all the players, Hadleigh finished the competition with 4 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. This meant the team finished 2nd overall in their group. This success has meant the team progresses through to the Super 8's County Finals next Wednesday at ITFC. Well done Year 6.

The Christmas Present Trust would like to thank....

Council leisure centres power their way to climate change solution Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are halfway through installing £2.8m worth of green energy measures at their leisure centres – providing the centres with renewable energy and slashing CO2 emissions. Works have completed this week to install a mixture of both solar PV panels and an air source heat pump, at the councils’ leisure centres and depot in Wenham, in line with their climate change ambitions. The council-owned sites and Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi at Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury measures include: Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre, Stowmarket (500 solar panels generating 195 kW as well as an air source heat pump and air handling unit); Hadleigh Pool and Leisure (380 solar panels generating 148.2 kW); Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury (294 solar panels generating 111.7 kW); Wenham Depot (56 solar panels generating 21.8kW). The changes, carried out by CorEnergy, enable the centres to reduce their demand on the energy grid and begin to transition away from fossil-fuelled heating systems, by powering them with renewables. Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, cabinet member for climate change, Cllr Jessica Fleming and Connah Lloyd, biodiversity, and sustainable general manager at Mid Suffolk Leisure transport at Babergh District Centre in Stowmarket Council, said: “This is another major step and milestone towards achieving the actions set out in our Carbon Reduction Management Plan – helping to make Babergh greener and cleaner. Decarbonising some of our major assets like our leisure centres moves us one step closer to our ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030, while also supporting improved health and wellbeing for our communities.” Cllr Jessica Fleming, cabinet member for environment at Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “We want to continue setting an example for our district when it comes to reducing carbon emissions – and this work is a vital step in that process. Our leisure centres are our second largest source of CO2e - so putting in place measures which use less energy and heat, and making them more self-sufficient is crucial if we’re to reach our carbon ambitions over coming years.” The next £1.4m investment to install trial solar carport technology at two of the centres - providing further additional power to the centres, EV charging points and reduced emissions - is due to be completed in Spring 2022. All the councils’ leisure centres were moved to certified green energy tariffs back in April 2021 – marking a further step in their Carbon Reduction Management Plan.
