Epic Ride from London to Paris raises £7000 Ten cyclists from Hadleigh Cycling Club rode from London to the Paris in under 24 hours on 27 June and raised over £7000 for the Hadleigh’s childrens cancer charity, The Brendan Oakes Trust. The team cycled 265 miles in total. There were some problems leaving London but the riders managed to catch their ferry and took a short break. The challenge really started in France, where they found out how hilly northern France is compared to Suffolk. The temperatures rose to 37 degrees without any shade or breeze. (The team went through 130 litres of water on the trip.) The final leg into Paris saw some welcome shade as they approached the Arc de Triomphe. The team were welcomed by friends and family and their exhausted support team. The team were accompanied on the ride by the Suffolk Roadsafe Team, Colin Kerr and Mark Oakes. The epic venture had the backing of the Hadleigh Cycling Club, The Pedal House and Sunny Day Cycles. P&O Ferries provided free passage. The Brendon Oakes Trust supports children and their families during treatment. The money raised by the cyclists will be used to renovate the dated Teenage Cancer Ward at Ipswich Hospital. Dulux has offered to donate paint and labour. Springfield Junior School in Ipswich embraced the challenge and raised in excess of £3500. Hadleigh Hidden Gardens – 2015 This has been our most successful year to date. Good weather and more wide ranging publicity seems to have drawn in many visitors from out of town, some from a considerable distance. Garden owners have clearly enjoyed the experience as well and we now have several offers of new destinations for next year. Refreshments, including Ploughman’s lunches offered in the Church were greatly appreciated and in demand and we must obviously increase the number of helpers next year. The opening of the medieval Row Chapel for the first time was very popular and happily has resulted in a useful access of funds for the Chapel. The funds of the Friends of St. Mary’s Church have also been boosted to an encouraging extent. This historic Church needs funds for the repair of the stonework and dressings of numerous windows, and a fairly large (possibly very large) bill is anticipated for repair/replacement of the roof in whole or in part. A further quinquennial inspection of the Church is also due soon and there is a clear risk that this may disclose further needs. It is obviously important to try to keep on top of these repairs as the need for them becomes apparent. So thank you to everyone who helped produce this result. Next years date is 11th. June. Please come along! www.hadleighgardens.co.uk

SOLD BY LET BY

This one day event is intended for anyone, who has experienced Bereavement or Loss of any kind or would like to help someone who is experiencing either, whether you are a family member, friend, or professional working closely with others. We ran two of these days in 2014 and those who attended found the day very useful and informative. It seems we all struggle with what to say or do for those who are experiencing loss. The learning on the days will be about the theory of grief and the grieving process, dispelling the myths around it and giving more understanding of how to ‘be’ with someone. Importantly helping us to learn what not to say. The days will be led by Sue Pullen, about whom a brief and relevant background is given below. There will be an opportunity to talk in pairs or in groups, where participants are free to share their own experiences and concerns if they wish. It is advised that the day is for people whose experience of Loss or Bereavement is longer than 8 – 10 months. We are offering these days again in 2015 On Saturday August 8th and Saturday October 3rd in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh from 10am – 4pm. There will be a maximum of 20 participants per day. We are able to offer these days for a small cost of £10 per person towards expenses thanks to our sponsors, however if this is a difficulty and you would really like to attend then please speak to me about it. Drinks will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Sue Pullen is co-ordinator for a community bereavement service in Essex, called Steppingstones and a qualified and experienced Counsellor and Supervisor. Before that Sue worked in an adult and children’s hospice for 14 years, firstly on the care floor and then in the family support team. Sue also offers bereavement training to both the general public and professionals. Sue writes: ‘I am passionate about this subject and believe this is one of the last taboos. If we can talk and understand about death and the grieving process, something that will surely happen to us all, maybe we can be alongside the bereaved in a meaningful way. I believe that bereavement is a process to be supported not a problem to be solved.’ As numbers are limited to 20 per day it is important that those wishing to attend book their place. Please could you contact or leave a message for Pauline Thrower on 07909 796266 or email at pauline@pt-counselling.uk OR at St Mary’s Church Office 01473 824987 or email at office@stmaryshadleigh.co.uk and you will be sent a booking form to complete and return. Thank you.

It can be a lottery selling or letting your house... but with these six numbers we’re sure to find you a winner

Howard with Alan Planck and Leeks Skips Hello all my readers. I am penning these words amongst the rose beds of the Gibbons’ residence with some glorious weather. You have two pictures to enjoy this month – I am in front of a Leeks Skips lorry with its proprietor Alan Planck and standing in a skip below. Skips are very handy things for getting rid of garden debris and such like. Do give Leeks a call on 01473 824256 or 07850 208974 if you need a skip. Isn’t it annoying when you go somewhere and people seem to think that they have a right to reserve seats all over the place. On several occasions lately I have been told, “those seats are taken”. I work on the basis that if there is not a bottom on the seat then it is available and my entourage and I rest our weary bones! Polstead is famous not only for the Red Barn Murder but also for its delicious cherries. If you drive through Polstead you can probably buy a few bags to enjoy with some cream. We are busy with conveyancing both domestic and commercial and would be pleased to give you the benefit of our experience. As I have said before one piece of land can be the subject of so many interests and so it is imperative that you have the benefit of good advice. We are local and you can come to see us. We would also be pleased to deal with your requirements for Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney. Howard Gibbons

Hadleigh’s Cloth-Trade Trail To accompany Hadleigh Year of the Sheep, Sue Andrews has produced a guided walk around the town that features sites connected with the former woollen-cloth industry, which brought prosperity to Hadleigh from the 14th to the 17th centuries. From documentary evidence, 43 locations have been identified as being the homes of clothiers or weavers or the sites of woadhouses for dyeing, watermills for fulling and tenter yards where cloth was stretched as part of the finishing process. This 24-page booklet includes a brief introduction to the industry and its processes, a map and directions for a circular tour around the streets of Hadleigh as well as details of each location and its connection with the industry. Les Selby has contributed colour photographs of many of the locations and older scenes of Hadleigh have come from the Hadleigh Archive. On sale at the beginning of August at Keith Avis and The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £4 or by post from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Suffolk IP7 7BG price £5.50.

An Evening with Gwen Dunn in Whatfield Gwen Dunn was the Headteacher of Whatfield School for 30 years, from 1951. On Saturday, 19th September, we will devote an evening, in the village hall, to celebrate all those years of service with her. We will show some of the short educational films she helped to make in the village, which used her school students as the stars, and will include an exhibition of many pictures taken over the years of the school, Gwen Dunn, and her many students. If you would like to come along, meet old friends, watch the films and talk to Gwen, our special evening will run from 7.30 to 9.30 in the village hall. Tea, coffee, biscuits and a bar will be available. For more information, call David on 01473 399215

‘Living with Loss’ If you have experienced ‘bereavement’ or ‘loss’ of any kind, either recently or not so recently, you might find this new group helpful. ‘Living with Loss’ is going to meet on the second Wednesday afternoon of each month, 2.30pm – 4pm . This group will concentrate more on giving people the opportunity to say how they are feeling at this moment in their life, as well as sharing a cuppa and cake. No-one has to say more than they want to, and, of course, each person’s situation is different. However, we hope this will give people the opportunity to be both comforted and encouraged by what others have to say as well as by sharing their own experiences. Loss can encompass different things, such as bereavement, loss of health, loss of friends, loss of pet, loss of job etc. The next date is August 12th in ‘The Guildroom’ at The Guildhall (entrance door across the churchyard from St Mary’s) continuing on September 9th, October 14th, November 11th and so on. We know it can be daunting to join something new where you might not know anyone, but if you think a group like this might help you, we would encourage you to try one meeting and see what you think – there is no obligation to keep coming and we won’t take it personally if you don’t! We would love to welcome you to give it a try. One lady has already been brave enough to try and found the group ‘much better than I expected, very welcoming and useful’. It would be helpful to know if you plan to come but not essential. Contact or leave message for Pauline on 07909 796266 or just arrive on the 12th. We look forward to meeting you then

Hadleigh Firm Wins Prestigious Business Award The Hearing Care Centre, a family-run audiology company, managed by entrepreneur Karen Finch has just been announced as the winner of a prestigious business award at the Anglian Business Awards organised by the East Anglian Daily Times newspaper. The company which looks after people’s hearing from Hadleigh Health Centre, has won the title of ‘Medium Business of the Year’ and also was selected as a finalist for the ‘Customer Care’ award. This was the ninth consecutive year that the company has either been winners or finalists of an award at this event, an achievement that Managing Director Karen Finch is very proud of. “I am so immensely proud of my team and what we do here on a daily basis. To be recognised by the judges for two awards is a fantastic achievement for a company of our size,” she said. “Our goal at The Hearing Care Centre is to achieve 100% customer satisfaction through taking a personal approach and providing the very highest quality hearing care". For the Medium Business category the judges were looking for an established business able to demonstrate all-round strength, including with people, figures and corporate social responsibility.

News from Whatfield School Whatfield CEVCP School have lots to celebrate. We were so proud of the children who participated in their SAT’s recently. To have every year 6 child reaching level 5 across the board is a fantastic achievement, and a testament to how well the children worked towards this exceptional result! We put it down to the SAT’s breakfasts before school! We have also been celebrating our fantastic sports week, organised in the main by Mrs Hipkins. The pupils had a Star of the week at gymnastics! huge variety of taster sessions, and trialled different types of sports. We were able to include swimming, horse-riding, archery and par-corps as well as using kangoo boots to bounce around our field. Key Stage One pupils visited Playworld in Stowmarket, whereas Key Stage Two tried their hand at rock climbing. The older children visited Hadeigh Bowls club, where they were treated to a masterclass in bowling, as well as squash and biscuits! We were also involved in tennis and orienteering around our lovely school grounds. Our sports day went off smoothly, and we had the best weather of the week, so were able to enjoy the teams racing in running races and relays, obstacle courses and a water run which didn’t quite get everyone wet enough! This afternoon Rock Climbing! was followed by the traditional family barbecue, where a bouncy castle and ‘Steff and Nonsense’ provided entertainment for the children, and a feast of a barbecue was enjoyed by all. Just before Sports week we were involved in producing a musical play called ‘Pirates vs Mermaids’, which was a fantastic mix of lovely songs, great acting and a lot of humour! As such a tiny school we try to get all the children involved in the performance, and our very youngest folk did a fantastic job with instruments and sea dances! A great evening was had by all. We were very sad to say goodbye to Mrs Long, who has led the PE in our school over the last five Pirates vs Mermaids, the true story! years, and taken us to great success for such a small school. She has supported us througha whole range of tournaments, and we wish her a very long and happy retirement, though I am sure we will see her around! If you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school, you are always welcome. Please telephone 01473 823 309 or use our website link www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an appointment. Lynne Golding, Headteacher

Thank You! The youth group Eternal from Hadleigh URC would like to thank everyone who supported and came to our recent Quiz Night event. It was a great success with nearly 50 participants forming six teams. We all had a great time and made a profit of £145 which will go into the Children's and Youth Work fund of the church.

Year 6 remain focused until the very end! Many people think that Year 6 only focus on their SATs and that life is easy for them after May. Certainly not at HCPS! Following their exams, the first thing they completed was an English transition unit for the High School. The children completed a written topic about superheroes, and they loved it. In addition to this, they also completed a maths transition unit, showing that our links with the High School are as strong as ever! Whilst completing these units, the children also wrote and then prepared for their Year 6 production. This year, they wrote a pantomime – Aladdin. This was performed to the whole school and there were also two evening performances for parents. There were plenty of laughs to be had, and lots of ‘he’s behind you’ and ‘oh yes he is, oh no he isn’t’ moments. We had a particularly convincing dame (Nathan) and Aladdin (Fern) sang a solo, as well as learning all of her words without a single error. In fact, the children began to react to the audience and were able to ‘ad lib’ – a true sign of maturity. The singing was excellent – the children performed a number of Queen songs. The performances were thoroughly enjoyed by all and Year 6 need to be commended for their teamwork and dedication. After the production and Camp, Year 6 also studied ‘Interdependence and Adaptation’ for science and this culminated in a visit to Africa Alive to see examples of adaptation to a variety of climates. Finally, the Year 6 children were asked to support younger members of the school on their various Camp days – a fantastic PSHE opportunity. Well done Year 6….you have worked really hard and we wish you well for High School. Year 3 are Roman all over the World Year 3 wrote and performed their own play during the penultimate week of term. The script was based on their learning about Romans in Britain. They also performed a number of songs and there was a group of Celtic dancers (who had designed their own ’Celtic’ T-shirts). This was the first ever evening performance for our Year 3 children, so they were very excited. It was good for their confidence and also kept them on task until the very end of term. Every child who wanted a speaking part was able to have one. The children also produced some fantastic mosaics to adorn the boards in the hall. Another successful Camp As I am writing, our school camp is being packed away for another year. This year Camp was closer to the end of term and this seemed to work very well. As usual, the highlight was ‘bat and moth’ although there were also a good variety of activities during the two days, organised by Mrs Clarke and Mr Peters. We would, in particular like to thank these two members of staff for their hard work, ensuring they were present for every single camp, although obviously we also wouldn’t be able to give the children this fantastic opportunity without the support and help of a huge number of parents and staff. Thank you to everyone who was involved – the children loved it and learned a lot from the ‘Forest Schools’ curriculum. Farewells Sadly, we are saying farewell to a number of staff this term: Mr Lloyd, who is seeking pastures new; Mrs Buckle, who is starting a new teaching post; Ms Franklin, who is taking up a part time post at another school and Mrs Gillott, who is ‘retiring’ and moving to the Orkney Isles….you can’t get much further away from us than that! We thank them all for their hard work and dedication and wish them all the best for the future.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 The summer holidays have arrived! That’s what I was told when I asked “Where is everybody?” I really miss our helpers when they go away but there has been plenty of animal company at Sesaw. Someone said our kitchen looked like a scene from Enid Blyton’s Woodland Tales - but I don’t think she is one of our volunteers. The casualties we’ve seen include pigeons fallen out of nests, orphaned ducklings, lambs rejected by their mothers, an abandoned fawn and two baby hedgehogs. Sadly, one did not survive due to severe flystrike but the other is thriving. A young badger was also brought in after it’s sibling was killed by a dog and we believe the parent was shot. Fortunately he has since been successfully released into a secure sett in another area with a group of similar aged badgers. Don’t forget our Facebook Photo Competition closes at the end of August so keep your cameras poised for that perfect shot when you are out and about with your pets. The thirteen winning entries will feature in the 2016 SESAW Calendar, more details next month. As many of you are probably taking a break this month I’ll tell you about the animals for homing and fundraising events in the next issue. Right now, I’m going to see if there are anymore new arrivals indoors. And if there is someone sleeping in my bed, there will be another wild animal in the kitchen – me! Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua! CLUB EVENTS: By the time that you read this the Summer BBQ will have taken place and at the moment it appears that attendance will be close to 50 so that it is hoped that the weather will be good and enable us to take full advantage of the garden at the Queens Head. A full report will appear in the next issue. SPEAKER: The Assistant District Governor for the Area paid a visit to the Club to hear about and approve the plans for the new Rotary Year beginning 1st July. He was impressed by the variety of activities to be undertaken by a club of 9 members and 5 associates. These include the aforementioned BBQ, a summer outing, autumn concert by the Hadleigh Community Choir, school competitions involving Hadleigh High School, the regular christmas collection, Club christmas party and New year champagne breakfast, Charter Anniversary Lunch and a weekend spring trip. As well as the weekly meeting other activities take place most months. MEMBERSHIP: As you can see we are a busy and interesting club but members and associates do not have to attend every week or every function They give as much time as they are able. If you would like to be part of this please contact David 01473 827226 to find out more about membership or associate membership. You may have heard that Rotary is for old men and at present this may be largely true of Hadleigh but we are not grumpy and form a jolly group together with some not so old ladies. Many younger people are now joining Rotary and invigorating the organisation. YOU could be one of these, enjoying the club atmosphere whilst helping your local community and communities in the third world. Why not give it a try - it may surprise you!! Remember 01473 827226 is the number to ring.

Fluid movement at Orchard Barn Orchard Barn is off-grid, so no mains electricity, no mains gas and no mains water. However we need water for our construction projects and for the plants on the vegetable plot. We have a large pond and rainwater is collected at various points around the site. But movement of that water around the site, particularly the volumes required by thirsty vegetables, means we are looking at ways to make life easier. A tank at the highest point of the garden would make gravity watering possible but we have to get the water to that tank. One idea is a solar powered pump trickle feeding it from one of the rainwater tanks. A low-tech alternative would be a hand-pump and one volunteer has produced a prototype made out of drainpipe, a broom-handle, wood and flexible plastic. If you could help us with the movement of water then come along any Wednesday, we are SW of Mill Road, Battisford or visit our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473-658193.

Come enjoy Semer beach, Fruity fun and piglets too Yes, the small village of Semer really does have a beach, or at least Hollow Trees Farm in Semer does. Visit the Hollow Trees Farm Trail this summer and you will discover that we have a very large sand pit to have fun in. Buckets and spades will be on hand and standing by will be an array of animals in their ‘beach huts’. There will be more fun to come in Semer Beach begins to take shape! early August, when we will be opening our Fruity Mini Maze. This will be an optional extra when you visit the farm trail. For a small additional fee (on top of the standard £2.50 entry charge) you can enter the maze and your challenge will be to find the six juicy fruit ‘rubbings’ around the paths. Find them all and your prize will be a voucher to swap for a piece of fruit in the farm shop. So, not only will you have extra fun on the farm you can enjoy some juicy fruit too. There is the usual farm trail fun with Pogals pit, welly throwing, the giants chair and more. There are lots of animals to see and feed and just in time for the summer holidays a litter of piglets have been born too. Hollow Trees Farm is just three miles from the Hadleigh bypass on the A1141 Lavenham Road and is open 7 days a week. Visit www.hollowtrees.co.uk or phone 01449 741 247 for more details. News from St Mary’s School We enjoyed another successful and sunny sports day on the 2nd of July. Well done to all the children who participated. They showed energy, enthusiasm and determination! They also did themselves proud during the day, helping and supporting each other (sometimes physically) to reach the finish line. All teams put in 100% effort and were always fair and sensible – we handed out several fair play wrist bands on the day and we should really celebrate and recognise how well the children demonstrated the school’s values and ethos. The element of competition is really important and some real skill, strength and speed were shown on the track! The running finalists competed in closely fought battles within their year groups and the 1st 2nd and 3rd in these races received certificates in a celebration assembly. Well done to all our finalists! Congratulations to RED team who won the team event and sports day as a whole. Finally thank you to all parents for their encouragement, support and help on the day – and to all staff who helped the events run smoothly! Everyone had a lovely time at the Summer Fair last weekend and it was a huge success! Thank you to all the parents and members of staff for the help and support we received. The Parent Support Group worked really hard to organise the day. We are really pleased to tell you that we raised a magnificent £1,715! We were really lucky with the weather, which was wonderful! There was a fantastic selection of cakes and refreshments on offer. As usual, Marcel, the entertainer, joined us for the fun. There were lots of things to see and do, including the Diamond Lights Majorettes, the Gipping and District Dog Club show, lots of stalls and games and a Punch and Judy show. The children loved playing on all the inflatables! We must say a special thank you to all the local businesses that donated prizes for the raffle – they were so generous! Yet again, this super event showed what a wonderful school community we have! Elm class have enjoyed a theme ‘Money Day’ organised by the Ipswich Building Society. They learned about bartering and why money was invented. They were fascinated to find out about currencies all around the world. There were lots of fun activities, including designing our own money, making money boxes, writing money stories and playing money maths games. The day was both educational and enjoyable! Thanks to the Ipswich Building Society staff who helped the children. To the delight of parents and staff, Key Stage 2 pupils have put on a wonderful show! The production was a series of sketches and songs on the theme of growing up and having high aspirations. Throughout the year, the children have been working on the ‘Be the Best You Can Be’ programme, which is part of the Olympic legacy. The theme of the production tied in really well with all our work on taking responsibility for your achievements and aiming high! The performances were fantastic! We were all so proud of the how well the children participated and performed. The singing was beautiful and the acting was superb! The children’s voices were so clear and expressive. Thank you to all the people involved in making the production such a success! The end-of-term disco was a great success! The children had lots of fun and showed off all their best dance moves! Thanks to the Parent Support Group for organising another super event. It was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents at our achievement assemblies at the end of term. This was a great opportunity to celebrate the children’s talents from outside school as well as recognising their achievements in school. We shared lots of awards, trophies and medals for talented musicians, excellent horseriding and fundraising for charities. We celebrated great sports achievements in football, swimming, rugby and athletics. From school, there were lots of awards for good behaviour and outstanding work. Well done to all the children for all they have achieved throughout this year. It has been a very busy year and we are so proud of you all! Enjoy the summer holidays!

Beaumont Primary School Sports Day The summer term is always a busy one, packed full of different events and activities. One of the highlights of the summer term is always the Sports day. Sports day at Beaumont isn’t just a day when we celebrate sporting achievement. The children, their families and friends mark the occasion with a picnic lunch on the school field before the activities in the afternoon. The children then take part in various sporting activities, competing for a team trophy. Unfortunately the weather at lunchtime was hit and miss, meaning that some families picnicked in the classrooms. Luckily it cleared in the afternoon and we enjoyed a full afternoon of sport. This year there was a rugby theme to the day, with children being placed in a team named after the countries competing in this year’s rugby world cup. Earlier in the week the children had spent time designing and creating their own team t-shirts which they wore on the day. After a very close competition Wales came out victorious, receiving the Sports Day trophy and individual medals for their efforts. Sponsored Walk The day after Sports Day, as part of a whole sport themed week, the children took part in a sponsored walk to help raise funds for the school, to pay for activities that enrich the curriculum for the children. On a very hot afternoon the children did brilliantly completing as many laps of the field as they could in half an hour. They were rewarded at the end with ice lollies, which were much appreciated! In total the children walked an amazing 180 miles and raised over £400! Well done to all for their efforts! The Pirates of the Curry Bean One of the highlights of the summer term is always the production that this year Beetle and Dragonfly classes worked so hard to produce. The Pirates of the Curry Bean, a tale of high jinks on the high seas, was performed brilliantly and to a very high standard. The children had to learn a number of songs which they sang extremely enthusiastically. They also had to stage several complicated scenes, which took some careful planning and skilful acting! The children thoroughly enjoyed performing and gained a great sense of satisfaction from the experience. The school allotment and gardening club Mrs. Liggett does a wonderful job heading up our school gardening club and looking after our school allotment in Hadleigh. All the children from the different classes have had the opportunity to help at the allotment this term. All the hard work has really been worthwhile as the fruits of their labour can now been seen as crops are being harvested. The allotment really is a fabulous resource to have at our fingertips, and gives the children a rich learning experience. Trip to Walton The Beetles class enjoyed a wonderful trip to Walton-on-theNaze to support the topic they had been studying in class. The children posed as undercover travel reporters to look at the quality of facilities available to visitors to Walton. The ‘undercover reporters’ also had time for a sandcastle competition and an ice cream! Spirit of the Wild! The school was visited by a number of exotic animals, brought in by the company ‘Spirit of the Wild’ for our youngest children in Nursery class. The children experienced a number of creatures including meerkats, owls, snakes and alligators to name but a few. The children, who were allowed to handle many of the animals, found the whole thing fascinating. They were also braver than some of the adults when it came to the creepier creatures! Year 6 The summer term is also a sad time too as we have to say goodbye to our Year 6 children as they move up to secondary school. In the last week of term Spider Class will be performing a special Leavers’ Assembly – Goodbye My Friend, which I’m sure will be a great success! We wish them all well for the future.

Avoid financial claims after divorce There has been much speculation in the media about the recent introduction of divorce “centres” in England and Wales. Recent newspaper articles have said that the new system makes getting divorced as easy as obtaining a TV licence. This isn’t the case. The grounds for a divorce and the divorce procedure have not changed. What has changed is that instead of sending your divorce paperwork to a local County Court to be checked by a Judge, you will instead send your divorce papers to one of the designated divorce centres where the paperwork will be checked by more junior divorce specialists. We have one of these divorce centres in our region at Bury St Edmunds. It is hoped that the use of divorce centres will mean that the Judges spend less time dealing with relatively straightforward divorce paperwork, giving them more time to deal with more complex issues such as finances or children disputes. Even if you feel that you are able to deal with the divorce proceedings yourself without involving a solicitor, it is important that consideration is also given to financial matters, even if you do not have many assets at the time of your divorce. Whilst the divorce process legally ends your marriage, it does not legally end your financial obligations to each other and it remains open for your ex-spouse to make financial claims against you in the future. So, if you win or inherit money or buy a property with a new partner, these things may not be protected and your ex-spouse could still ask the Court several years after a divorce for a share of those monies or your new property. It is possible to prevent this by having a Court Order made at the time of your divorce, which a solicitor can advise you about. If you would like to obtain more information about divorce proceedings or financial matters, you can arrange a meeting with our Hadleigh family lawyer, Jane Fowles, by calling her on 01473 298184 or e-mail: jane.fowles@gotelee.co.uk

Lamb Kebabs with Apple and Beetroot Raita

Enjoy summer and stay active

Hello lovely people of Hadleigh. Apologies for the distinct lack of recipe last month, but I was busy preparing myself for a three month stint away from home to work in a hotel in Ilfracombe, North Devon. Now I know what you’re thinking, but I believe I can by Sarah Thompson still carry out my duty as a recipe columnist despite being way out west! It being the year of the sheep, I had thus far managed to avoid using lamb. How could I cook lamb when the sheep around town look so adorable? However, having been approached by the Sheep Committee, I figured I had no option. North Devon is lovely, but the seagulls keep me awake at night. Look out for next month’s recipe for seagull pie! Lamb Kebabs with Apple and Beetroot Raita: Ingredients: 1 red onion, thinly sliced, juice 1 lemon, plus wedges to serve, 800g lamb mince, 4 tsp garam masala, 200g natural yoghurt, 1 apple, grated, 1 small beetroot, approx. 50g, peeled and grated, small bunch coriander, cooked rice or warm wraps to serve. Method: Heat grill to high. Toss onion with half the lemon juice, plus some seasoning, and set aside. Using your hands, mix the mince with 3 tsp of the garam masala and some seasoning. Divide the mix into 6, then roll each into a long thin sausage. Insert a skewer along the length of each kofta and grill for 5 minutes on each side until cooked through. If using wooden skewers, soak them for 10 minutes first. Make the raita as the lamb cooks. Mix together the yoghurt, apple, beetroot, remaining garam masala, lemon juice and some seasoning. Serve the koftas with the onions, raita, lemon wedges, coriander leaves and cooked rice or wraps.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 29 (August-September 2015 With Hadleigh Year of The Sheep in full swing, there is ‘lots of history’ going on in the town. There will be exhibitions at St. Mary’s Church as part of the free event A Grand Celebration: Hadleigh’s historical woollen-cloth trade on Saturday 26th September from 9.30 am to 4 pm. Margaret Woods of Layham is presenting research from the medieval documents of the manor of Hadleigh, where she has found evidence relating to workers in the industy, including those fined for unlawfully spilling dyer’s effluent and other offences that appeared before the manorial court. Sue Andrews of Bildeston is featuring ten clothiers who died between 1577 and 1681, all of whom left wills and are commemorated in the church. Their homes have been identified and also the property that they left for charitable works. Costumed presentations entitled We are the Hadleigh clothiers will be performed at 10 am, 12 noon and 2.30 pm, for which Millie Goulbourn and Jan Snowden have researched authentic costumes, including that for Thomas Alabaster, who is to be played by his 13 times great-grandson! In Issue 23, Nigel Crisp of Hadleigh wrote how the memorial in High Street to those who fell in the Great War (1914-1918) came into being. Now he relates how, for the Second World War (1939-1945), the town’s original aspirations were to create something completely different but a stone memorial was eventually recognised as the only way to commemorate the war dead. Hadleigh War Remembrance Fund was launched and diocesan architect H. Munro Cautley was called upon to design a ‘background’ wall to the garden of remembrance, which was officially unveiled on Sunday 30 May 1947. Nigel has not only used the minutes of committee meetings and newspaper articles to piece together an interesting story but has also identified the people involved in the decision-making led by William Prowse, farmer at Garry Farm on Pond Hall Road, who was chairman of Hadleigh Urban District Council at the time. Wishing to commemorate fallen heroes further, when housing was erected at the beginning of this century on the former Ministry of Defence site on Aldham Mill Hill, names for the roads were taken from the war memorials so, amongst others, there is a Lambert Close and a Leeks Close. From family papers and photographs kindly loaned by Sheryl Rush of Hadleigh, the story is told of both these families, through the point-of view of Eva Jessie Lambert nee Leeks in ‘One woman’s losses in the Great War’. Like many thousands of women throughout the country, she saw the young men in her family go off to war either to die ‘in some foreign field’ or to return broken in body and eventually to die at home. The series ‘Made in Hadleigh’ written by members of Hadleigh Local Studies Workshop continues with Jean Styles’ investigation into bricks. Although materials are now brought in for building, there was a time when all bricks and tiles were made locally. Jean has visited two sites on the outskirts of the town where clay was dug and bricks were made and has also identified some of the town’s early 19th century houses that were made of locally-produced bricks. Please send your contributions to the Editor: Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 7BG 01449 740673. Kersey Mill Newsletter We are looking forward to the next phase of the restoration which are due to commence early autumn and will consist of repairs to the wooden frame and floors. At the time of writing we received wonderful news that Historic England have awarded a grant to help with these vital repairs. During the 1960’s the mill suffered extensive damage due to water ingress through the central valley that had been stripped of its lead. Over a period of some years considerable damage was caused to the roof frame and floors. Extensive works were carried out on behalf of a very generous benefactor Beatrice Brocklebank who paid for the roof to be repaired; however the frame and floors remain in the perilous state. Photographs show some of the decayed main vertical and horizontal timbers that have compromised the structure. Today we have large areas of flooring and substantial upright timbers and tie beans which are 8 meters in length and urgently need replacing before the flooring joists and boards can be replaced. The upper floors contain some of the original machinery that will be accessible once the structure is repaired. It will be a pleasure for the public to view the interesting machinery and engineering once the repairs are complete and all health and safety measures are undertaken. We have now completed an extensive survey of the plans that are required. This sectional drawing shows the central valley and the timbers below that require repair. During July we have continued to receive visitors from near and far, we have had an influx of Kiwi’s, Mr & Mrs Garnham from Blenheim Marlborough NZ were tracing their ancestors, great, great, great grandfather Thomas Garnham milled and lived at Kersey Mill in the 1820’s where great, great grandfather Benjamin was born in 1825. Nearer to home we were delighted to have an evening visit from Bures and District Agricultural Club with some of the visitors recalling their memories of Ben Mason the last miller here at Kersey. The Kiwi’s have now flown home simultaneous with the Kestrel chicks fledging and the cygnets that we previously mention heading south. A timely reminder that summer is slipping away and all the external repairs and redecoration of the mill need completing before phase 2 commences.

Enjoy Christmas with us! Have you considered becoming a Home-Start volunteer?

Home-Start South Suffolk & District is a local charity supporting families with young children who are facing difficulties or challenges, across the South Suffolk and West Ipswich areas, by recruiting and training volunteers to visit these families in the family’s own homes. Volunteers support the families weekly and provide either a listening ear and somebody to talk to, or practical support; helping the family get out and about, listening to children reading, support with cooking, help with appointments or just finding out what other services are available to them. Volunteering for Home-Start is a great opportunity to explore your own individual skills and use your life experiences to help other families. The only qualification we ask for is having the experience of bringing up children and understanding the pressures of raising a young family. For those who wish to use the experience to help in gaining employment, we also offer CERTA accredited Level 1 and 2 training. Our preparation courses are run regularly in Ipswich and the Hadleigh Join iel planned for Autumn 2015. As we pass the centenary anniversary of each death, we publish the story to the website. We started the year by holding a commemorative ‘Lights Out’ event at the war memorial to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the great war. We took the local schools on a tour of the great war graves in the town’s cemetery in November. At the Hadleigh May show we held our first exhibition and displayed our WW1 trench prop complete with real life ‘Tommy’. Throughout the year we have given a number of presentations to local groups and we took the Hadleigh Sea Scouts on a two day tour of the battlefields of France and Belgium. We have been able to help descendants learn more about their relatives and in one case we were able to re-unite a set of medals that had been missing for many years. As we start our second year, we will be holding a Sunset Ceremony at the War Memorial on the evening of Saturday 15 August 2015 to commemorate the centenary of the blackest day in Hadleigh’s history (see this months Great War article). We will also use this event to commemorate VJ Day. The project and research continues, but we rely on the support of the community. Please keep digging into the family archives and scrap books and keep the information coming in. www.hadleighww1.com

Hadleigh Healing Society The holidays are here, the anticipation of spending time relaxing, being with the family all thoughts of work hopefully forgotten for the next two weeks. Laying on a beach, waves gently lapping, children digging in the sand an idyllic picture. Unfortunately, that picture has been shattered by events abroad. You ask yourselves WHY. There is no easy answer to that question and one that greater minds than ours have pondered on over the centuries. We just have to try and carry on with our lives respecting others, showing generosity of spirit. It is not easy when it affects you and yours. If you are finding it difficult to come to terms with the way the world is and would like someone to talk to our qualified healers are there to listen. Just telephone: 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighsociety.org for an appointment On Saturday, 19th September we are having another Clairvoyant Day. It is an opportunity to have a 20 minute private reading with a medium for £12. If you would like a reading, book early because these Clairvoyant Days are very popular. My life at The Shelley Centre A very happy day was enjoyed by everyone who came to the Shelley Show at the end of June. 26 riders competed in the Dressage and Countryside Challenge Classes and were able to show their expertise to families and friends. They, and the horses and ponies, looked very smart and the smiles on the faces of both riders and spectators when the rosettes and trophies were presented made it a hugely rewarding experience for all the Shelley helpers. We are grateful to the Ipswich Lions Club who kindly presented a new cup for the Senior Turnout class this year. Awards were also given to riders who have made a special achievement in their riding progress through the year. Picture shows Katelynn riding Alfie with Liz winners of Junior Turnout Class. Full details of the Show results are available on our Web Site under the Shelley News section. We were delighted to show a group of Hadleigh Brownies around the Stables when they came to find out about our work. Having been introduced to all the horses they hope to hold a fund raising event so that they can join our scheme to Sponsor a Pony. Incidentally this makes a very worthwhile birthday or Christmas gift, for a minimum donation of £25 your name will be displayed outside the stable door and you will receive a booklet about your chosen pony. Details are on the Web Site or contact to Di Godfrey at The Centre. A change of routine and different activities are a welcome break for our ponies during the summer holidays to keep them refreshed and fit, ready for our new term which starts on 7th September. www.trophypetfoods.co.uk The passing of Ray Wells My Dad, Ray Wells, passed away on Thursday July 2nd and was buried in Hadleigh Cemetery (overlooking the cricket ground) on July 13th. I would like to thank all his friends who attended the funeral – it was good to see so many of you. I must apologise to those of you who I didn’t manage to contact in person. Dad was a Suffolk man through and through and loved working his patch of land here in Hadleigh. He was known to many in the community through his years as pest controller for Babergh council, sometimes travelling between jobs in a cart pulled by Polly his horse. He made many friends during his time here and I thank you all for being a part of his life. I would also like to thank the kind and caring staff at Magdalen House, here in Hadleigh who looked after him so well in his final days, and to his closest friends who did so much to help him. If you’d like to make a donation to charity in his memory, he supported Cancer research. Thank you all, Gary Wells

Lady Windermere’s Fan Sudbury Dramatic Society based at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre are paying a return visit to Oscar Wilde in the capable hands of director Denis Brogan, by staging Wilde’s play dealing with trust and marriage, Lady Windermere’s Fan, from Tuesday 8th to Saturday 12th September. When happily married Lady Windermere is told that her husband is frequently visiting, and paying large sums of money to, a mysterious woman, her world falls apart. Believing that her husband is having an affair, she decides to leave him for another man. However she reckons without the mysterious Mrs Erlynne who persuades her to return home, which she does – but in her haste she leaves her fan behind! But who is Mrs. Erlynne and what is her hold over Lord Windermere? Mrs Erlynne’s secret means that she is prepared to make a great sacrifice to protect Lady Windermere’s reputation. All is eventually revealed in Oscar Wilde's compelling drama. Although one of Wilde’s more serious plays, Lady Windermere’s Fan is laced liberally with scintillating wit and compelling humanity, satirising morals and marriage, mistaken identity and misunderstood conversations. Lady Windermere’s Fan is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 8th September until Saturday 12th September at 7.45pm. A Gala Evening on Wednesday 9th July offers audiences the chance to dress up and enjoy canapés served during the play’s interval. Tickets are on sale from the Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaytheatre.org.uk

Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers Our walk this month will be on Saturday 8th. It will be a circular route starting and finishing at Stoke by Nayland Church. Participants will have to find their own way to Stoke as there is now no public transport there from Hadleigh. The church is easy to find in Stoke as it is the biggest building in the village and can be seen for miles around, and there is plenty of parking available. We will leave the church at 10am. and walk to Harrow Street Farm via The Downs, Popular Farm, Beechams Farm, and Stoke By Nayland Golf Club. We will then return to Stoke Church via Hynards, The Carrs, Plough Lane, Cock Street, Nayland Hall, Townland Barn, Harpers Grove, Nayland Village, The Old Pest House, Elm Covert, Popular Farm, and The Downs. There will be a comfort stop at a hostelry in Nayland Village. The walk is 7.5 miles in length and should take about 3 hours to complete. It is suitable for all walkers, children over ten, and your dog. We recommend participants wear strong shoes, or preferably walking boots as some of the paths are rough and wet in places. There are some wonderful views on this walk. Further information about this walk, or the other activities of the footpath volunteers may be obtained from David Warner (Hadleighs Footpath Warden) on 01473 652416, mobile 07749 732941 or E-mail nottinghamvictoria@supanet.com

The Drama Zone What a fantastic start to 2015 we have had at The Drama Zone. In April this year we performed our debut show, "The Inquisitive Butterfly", which showcased a collaboration of creative writing, movement and comedy, all of which was very well received by our audience members. Following on from this and keeping it topical, in July our second show, "Sheeptastic" brought together all things sheep in a series of short sketches, devised by young people and performed to family and friends and enjoyed by both audience and cast members alike. The Drama Zone continues to grow and develop and due to this we are in a position to offer a fun opportunity for young people this summer. On Tuesday 25th August the Ansell Community Centre in Hadleigh will play host to A FREE fun filled drama workshop for young people age from 7+. Beginning at 10.30-12.30 participants will have the opportunity to see how much fun a drama zone workshop can be. Places are limited are on a first come first served basis. After the workshop parents and workshops participants are invited to stay and enjoy free refreshments and young people will have the option of making and creating a piece of art for a small charge with Teresas sand art table. Drama can be a great medium to instill confidence, develop self esteem and promote teamwork skills. It is also a lot of fun and young people who take part are able to take the skills they learn and transfer them into other areas of their lives. At The Drama Zone our ethos is to include, support and create. Having a person centred approach and an inclusive policy ensures that every child who attends is respected, valued and encourged to shine. For further information or to book your free place now contact 07718935939. The Drama Zone, inspiring, including and encouraging young people to create, grow and perform.

Do You Want a Slimmer Summer? So the summer holidays are upon us – but would you still like to drop a size (or more) to feel happy in that fab bikini! Are you in a bit of a panic about a late summer break? Think it’s too late to do anything about it? No! It’s not...!! The key to this diet madness is not which diet you choose – or whether you cut out cheese on Wednesdays, don't eat at all after 6.36pm or what day you start …. It’s commitment, encouragement and motivation!! It comes down to how much you really want to be slim and whether you'll let anything or anybody stand in your way. Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Most people are very good at working out how much weight they’d need to lose each week to achieve their goal – in time for whatever event is on the horizon... But thinking about reducing your weight won’t achieve anything - you actually have to do something about it? So you need commitment, support and motivation. The fact is you do have to do the 'hard work' for a while..! You can read every book on diets and do any amount of research but at some point, if you really want it, there is no choice – you have to do it! Why is it so much easier to find excuses rather than putting that energy into something you say you want so much…! Don’t put it off any longer - make the choice today to get the body you want in time for summer - and like thousands of others you could soon be saying ”I wish I’d found Cambridge sooner!” Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has over 6 years’ experience so, for individual help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. Surviving the school holidays Summer holidays are a time to spend quality time with the family and to take a break from working. Unfortunately summer holidays do not always work out as planned and this can sometimes lead to difficulties within a family. Research has shown that nearly a fifth of parents end the school holidays contemplating divorce or separation. There are a few different tips which can help you make the most of your family holiday and more importantly, to ensure that you do not end the holiday feeling more stressed than before the holiday. It is important that when booking a trip away, you and your partner fully communicate the type of holiday you wish to have and plan it accordingly. You may need to compromise on the type of holiday and where you go and still be enthusiastic. This is likely to lead to less arguments and a more enjoyable holiday overall. It is vital with any holiday which involves small children, you plan as much as you can in advance to ensure that they are kept entertained as much as possible. It will not be possible to plan all activities in advance but by taking games and puzzles, there will be activities for the children whatever the weather. This will help with making the holiday less tiresome and stressful. Keeping children entertained for six weeks is always a challenge. There are plenty of websites with activities. It is important to check these early as they book up quickly. Going away as a family can be expensive, this can lead to growing pressure on your finances, which in turn can lead to further arguments. Be sensible when booking a holiday and make sure you have costed it out fully first. If you are a separated parent it is crucial to ensure that you maintain good communication with your former partner during the summer holidays. It is important to try and agree who has the children when, particularly if you want to go away, in order to avoid your plans coinciding with each other. It is advisable to commence these discussions as early as possible as this will allow you both plenty of time to make adjustments to your plans. If you are planning a holiday abroad, you will need to obtain the other parents’ consent to the holiday, before you book your flights and accommodation. Before going on holiday, always make sure that your former partner has the details of where the children will be, in the case of an emergency. It is also vital to discuss how and when the other parent will be able to contact the children, so that they can keep in touch during their holiday. This will go a long way to avoiding any potential conflict with each other, upon your return. What the children think should be your main consideration, so always be enthusiastic of any holiday or activity your former partner arranges. Family holidays can be stressful, however, by being aware of the potential difficulties, it should allow you to make the most of the summer holidays. If you do end up under stress, there are often other solutions than separation. Organisations like Number 72 offer assistance – www.number72.org. Bates Wells and Braithwaite 01787 242824

CRY Heart of London Bridges Walk in memory of Rebecca Phillips On the 28th June 2015 we were joined by family and friends in London to join over 1000 other people who have been going through the same ordeal as ourselves of losing a child to one of the range of conditions that can cause sudden cardiac death. It would have been our daughter Rebecca's 30th Birthday on June 29th 2015 so we thought this would be an ideal event to attend in her memory and to raise awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The walk involved crossing seven bridges and despite the rain everyone managed to complete the walk and enjoyed the sites of London. A big thank you to all our family and friends who joined us and continually show their love and support. Peter & Julie

A plea to the people of Hadleigh

on Thursday 13th August

I wish to approach people in the area of Hadleigh to solve a small issue I have. We are a family living in central Brittany, France who have family in the Hadleigh village. Following my father’s stroke, unfortunately, he can no longer visit us in France and we have decided to try to visit them and bring our two daughters over for their first taste of a British Christmas (ie: Carol services, Christingle, Pantos, lights etc). We would prefer to stay in a property instead of a hotel but prices are so inflated for Christmas that it is outside our budget. We are lucky enough to have both another property in Brittany (sleeps 4) and another in Menorca, Spain (sleeps 4) which we would be offering in exchange (but not only for Christmas - any time of the year for up to 3 weeks - depending on the season). We are a non-smoking professional couple with two well-behaved girls (11 and 12) and we just want a property sleeping minimum of 4 as a base from which to explore the area and visit family and friends. The period required would be approx. 12 days between 19 Dec - 1 Jan. I am happy to furnish more details by email to anyone who contacts me with a suitable property, I hope the above makes sense but if you wish to telephone me please do not hesitate to do so on 00 332 96 263548. Cartoon Money for St. Elizabeth’s An exhibition of cartoons by Suffolk-based Keith Waite, one of Britain’s greatest-ever political and social cartoonists, has raised £1,209.43 for St Elizabeth’s Hospice, Ipswich, where he spent some time shortly before his death last year. His widow, Renee Waite, of Pin Mill, presented the hospice with a cheque for £1,000, made up of money from a raffle of one of the cartoons and contributions from the sale of other cartoons. The £209.43 came from bucket donations. The raffle was won by Philip Cordle, of Chelmondiston. The exhibition was of 40 cartoons Keith Waite drew for the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror between 1969 to 1986. They included some of the sharpest political attacks ever made on Premier Margaret Thatcher and her Ministers. The exhibition was on the restored sailing barge Melissa moored at Orwell Quay, Ipswich, during the first weekend in July. David Thompson 01473 314185

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Pupil Leaders for 2015-16 The world in which our pupils will live, as adults, will be very different from the world they live in as children. To succeed in the future pupils will need to be able to think creatively to solve the problems which will arise in an unpredictable environment. They will need to be adaptable and flexible as their career paths will change regularly and they will need to work with a wide range of organisations and stakeholders. To prepare our young people for this future we need to ensure that we develop these skills in the classroom setting as well as provide opportunities for them to take higher levels of responsibility and work with others to reach a common goal. Therefore, the ability to lead is a key skill and one we value at Hadleigh. Our young people embrace the challenge of leading and we have seen evidence of this across the year groups with House activities, enrichment activities, leadership development, the student union, team challenges such as Duke of Edinburgh as well as within the learning environment we offer. We were delighted that so many of our pupils have applied for our pupil leadership posts and have been hugely impressed by the levels of confidence and maturity they have displayed in the selection and interview process. I would like to take the opportunity to share, with you, the names of our pupil leadership team for 2015-16. Head Pupils 2015-16 Lois Cooper, Anna Norman, Joel Cooper, Oliver Jeeves Prefect Leaders 2015-16 Charlie Kebell, Aidan Roberts, Vito Calvino, Isabel Chaplin, Daisy Linge, Jared White, Josh Gray, Poppy Simmons Prefects Laura Flockhart, James Tapp, Izzy Roblin, Izzy Double, Lewis Quinn, Holly Morsman, Oscar Farrow, Ranulf Gull, Harvey Sharpe, Joseph Stiff, Daniel Squirrell, Morgan Dee, Harry Croft, Becky Linge, Bon Robinson, Chloe Davies, Ben Squirrell, Jamie Colcomb, James Baker, Oliver Graham, Amelia Gillespie, Ben Herbig, Harry Corrie, Ben Evans, Aurora Clare, Ethan Willet, Antonia Marks, Felix Vardon-Barber Junior Sport Prefects Luca Beadle, Marcus Peters, Rio Simpson, Ellis Girling, James Smith, Ewan Baxter, Lewis Woolston, Olivia Davies, Fern Morrin Neve Woulfe-Flanagan, Megan Barlow, Eliza Bennett Here’s some feedback from the pupils involved: All students applying for a Prefect position had to complete the Pupil Leadership Program which required us to demonstrate our commitment to the school as well as our ability to lead and work as part of a team. Those of us who were applying for the role of Prefect Leader or Head Pupil not only had to achieve a level 3 of the Pupil Leadership Program, but also prepare and deliver a presentation on “How to Improve the Welfare of Students at Hadleigh High School” to the current Head Pupils as well as participating in an interview with the Deputy Head and Year Learning Leader. Poppy Simmons, soon to be Prefect Leader, said “The Prefect Program is a great opportunity to develop new skills that will help improve your life in the future. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I am excited to start my new role as Prefect Leader”. I wish everyone who would like to go for these roles in the future the best of luck and to go for it! Year 10 Spend a Day at Disney On Thursday 2nd July the Year 10 pupils went on a trip to Disneyland in Paris as part of their Business Studies’ course. They travelled by coach to Dover and then by ferry to Dunkirk, arriving at Disneyland at 11am. Each Year 10 student was given a workbook to complete whilst at Disneyland. They had to do things like: interview a worker, find out about the brands and other interesting facts. Whilst in Disneyland they were also able to squeeze in a few rides here and there. To get home the Year 10s travelled by Euro Tunnel. Mr. Lloyd, who organised this trip – said, “ It was extremely hot, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves still” Shannon Seed (10M) said, “It was very enjoyable, and very useful for Business Studies because it helped us to understand what it was like to run a business from a consumer’s point of view.”

A Day Out at Suffolk One On July 7th the Year 10s had a wonderful day trip to Suffolk One to sample what life was like at college. They began the day by exploring the college and 34

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

trying out a variety of interesting activities such as: Engineering; ICT and Science. After lunch, the students watched lots of short individual performances from previous Suffolk One students and graduates, which gave them a small insight of what Music and Drama was like at the college. The performances including music, dancing and lots of singing. At the end of the day our students were able to choose which activity they took part in, such as: English, History, Science, Psychology and Hair Dressing. Molly Keeble (10T) said, “It was very informative and showed me what different subjects were like.”

Cake Sales raise money On the 8th and 9th of July, 7D hosted a cake sale to raise money for the Rosa Simon Trust; a charity which raises money to buy music equipment for children and schools in need of them. Overall they raised £150 which will be a great help to the charity. The amazing army of volunteers who helped were: Sophie Knock, Megan Botwright, Abigail Briggs, Morgan Holmes and Seamus Smith. Overall the sale was an outstanding success with all the cakes being sold out every day. The helpers said “I would help again at another cake sale as it was helping a good cause.”

Parading at the Prom On Friday 10th July the Year 11 students held their prom at Wherstead Park. The evening as a whole was really great; there was never a dull moment, and everyone enjoyed themselves. Harry Planck and Chloe Rhodes took inventive entrances to a whole new level, by arriving in a skip! The food was great, and there was even a sweet bar! All in all the evening was amazing! Mr Green said “it was lovely warm evening and everyone looked stunning.” Mr Lloyd said “The venue was really nice, and the food was great!”

New Staff Induction On the 13th July the new staff, who will be joining us in September, spent a day at the school as part of their induction. Their day included an array of activities: Administration, Performance Management, Fire drill, Safeguarding, Pecuniary interests and School Systems to introduce them to the way the school works. One new member of staff commented ‘I have learnt more about how the school works’. All of the new staff are looking forward to coming to Hadleigh’. Dress Down for Money On the 13th of July Hadleigh High School took part in a non-school uniform day, to raise money for the Sports department. The money will be spent on new football kits for the girls and rugby tops for the boys. Chloe Davies and Bethany Bennett have been the stars of the show, selling Ice Creams for the past three months. Along with the Year 7 and 8 dodge ball tournament they organised, they have already raised £224. In total they hope to have raised in the region of £800.

A Maths and English Get Together The Year 9 Maths and English Parents’ Evening was a way of informing the students and the parents about what was going to be happening with their GCSEs next year. For example, there will now be an additional Maths paper, and the difficulty of the papers have been increased, with some questions from A-Level being brought down to GCSE. Some subjects to be studied in the new Maths syllabus include basic geometric sequences, composite functions and, from A-level, some basic calculus styled questions. Our English teachers who were involved with the Parents’ Evening, explained the key change in that the coursework has been removed from English Language and Literature, and that the format of the examinations would be changed. The new exams are all going to be ‘closed-book’, meaning that the students will not have the option to bring the book which they are studying into the exam with them, and must instead learn all of the quotations they might need beforehand. Additionally, the grading system is also changing. The grades will not be letter based, but instead they will be based from the number 1 through to 9, with 1 being the lowest grade, and 9 being the highest. A ‘good pass’ is going to be 5, which is equivalent to a high C or a low B. The students mostly felt that the new changes would not affect them negatively.

Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Duke of Edinburgh – or D of E, is a programme of activities in four sections (five if you are going for gold) which are: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and for Gold, a Residential. From Monday 6th to Thursday 9th July, a Year 11 group went to the Peak District to complete their Silver Qualifying Expedition. For this, they had to walk 45km in 3 days. They also had to plan their route, carry equipment and food. There was an assessor to evaluate their survival skills and grade them. Mr. Fahy, who attended for moral support, said ‘it was a successful trip because everyone passed with flying colours’.

Year 8 Go to University Mr. McMillan took a group of gifted and talented Year 8 students to Essex University. They spent the day studying Marine Biology, plants and photosynthesis. We interviewed some students who went on the trip to ask what they thought about it and all the responses were positive. All of them said that it was something that they would like to do again and that they were so happy that they got the opportunity to do it.

Year 6 get a taste of High School It’s that time of year again when the school year has nearly finished and the soon to be year 7 students visit the school for their Induction Day. Each year, new Year 6s come to the school to experience a full day at Hadleigh High. It’s a very daunting time for them, so as a community, we try to make them feel at ease with the new environment. On Friday the 10th of July, the Year 6s from local schools came up to gain experience of their future school. Many of the staff and students got involved on the day to ensure that everyone had an enjoyable and welcoming day. It was great to see that the majority of students got involved and were very enthusiastic about it. The day consisted of the students participating in many subjects that Hadleigh High offers including: Maths, English, Science, Food Tech, Art, Design Tech and History. The staff that were involved shared their thoughts on how the induction day went. Mrs. Peirson commented on how the day went she said: ‘The Induction Day helps new pupils to reduce their anxiety and to familiarise themselves with the new school so they know what to expect in September, although they were a bit overwhelmed at the beginning, most really enjoyed their visit and are excited to start at Hadleigh.’ We offer a warm welcome to the Year 6s soon to be Year 7s and hope they enjoy their time at Hadleigh High school.

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Back on June 8th we enjoyed an early evening visit to the garden that nestles behind the nursery of Place for Plants in East Bergholt. Rupert Eley guided us around his 20 acre 'garden for all seasons', clearly with great pride and enthusiasm for something he has lovingly tended now for two decades. Like any garden it is continually evolving, and is populated by many unusual trees and shrubs. Spectacular specimens such as the handkerchief tree sit amongst azaleas and rambling roses in a mix that works beautifully. Many of us left thinking that a season ticket to see the garden at different stages throughout the year would be a good idea. (RHS members can get in free). July 13th was another outside meeting, this one, to Wyken Hall gardens, was marked with sadness as on that day many members attended the interment of one of the Clubs oldest members, Ray Wells. Ray was well known locally as, in his own words, 'the rat man' who before his retirement worked for Babergh as a pest controller. He was definitely a "character" and also known for his success as a gardener who was more interested in vegetables than flowers, like me! The gardens at Wyken Hall are large and interesting although the unpleasantly drizzly weather did not help - nor the screeching peacocks, (wonder what they taste like?!!) I hope members enjoyed their day and thanks to the drivers and especially ours who chased the local countryside to find a cup of tea! Our next event is a visit to East Ruston Old Vicarage in Norfolk on August 12th which I am sure will go well, and let's hope the weather is good as we all know it is a delightful garden and well worth a visit.

Weeds away - the easy way! Trevor’s customers have been very impressed with his convenient, quick and cost-effective method of weed control for Patios, Block Pave and Stone Driveways, which is hassle free and can cost less than the Do It Yourself alternative. In addition, customers have been able to allow pets and children to play safely in the garden following weed elimination treatment. One of Trevor’s regular clients, Martin Wright, commented “I have used Trevor’s spraying service on two occasions to deal with the recurring toublesome problem of weeds on our patio and paths, the spray used by Trevor is very effective and well applied by him. This deals with the problem over a good period of time and the cost is very reasonable. A much better solution than DIY products which are not very effective and last only for a short time. Trevor’s Garden Services provides the ideal solution to long term weed termination. Using a special, full-strength Pro Biactive formula, Trevor can easily control your annual and perennial grass problems, as well as those annoying broadleaved weeds. Trevor also recommends this special formula, 360g/lt glyphosate (which is unavailable in everyday retail outlets) for clearing out-of-control weedy ground prior to planting or sowing. We have had such a fantastic response to our professional spraying services we are booking up fast, so if you have areas of block paving or driveways, patios and paths, or a plot of ground that’s wild with weeds, call Trevor for fast, free quotations on 01473 824315 or 07850 630389 to find out more about how you can make your weeds go away the easy way! :H DUH 5HFUXLWLQJ &RPH DQG MRLQ WKH +ROORZ 7UHHV 7HDP

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts My garden badly needs quite a lot of rain. I do water some crops, but it is not reasonable to do everything. The grass does not get watered during these dry spells, but usually recovers. I do not aspire to the sort of lawn that I saw on television recently where the owner cut the grass just about every day, raked it and overseeded it. It did look great, but that is not my scene. Some crops have done very well, but others have suffered from the lack of water. My onions and shallots look good, and the peas have done quite well, but the early potato crop is down, and I was disappointed with the broad beans. My tomatoes seem late this year. In mid July I have not picked any. They look OK at the moment, but I must get them sprayed against potato blight, and there are a few white fly about. In the flower garden the sweet peas have done very well this year and cropped for a long time. They were sown in the Autumn in my greenhouse. My final concern at the time of writing is the Lesser Bindweed (Convulvulus arvensis) which has a pretty pink flower. I have had some of this in my vegetable patch for years, and I thought I was winning with it, but this year it is worse than ever. The problem is that the roots go down deeper in the soil than you can reach with a digging fork, and it will regrow from a small piece of root. If you have any of this do not use a rotavator because it will make things a lot worse. Hints August is one of the more difficult months to give useful hints. One hopes that the weather will be beautiful, and one can simply cut the lawns, start to pick some apples and enjoy the garden. It is too late to sow seeds of many things, but there are a few seeds that one can sow if they appeal to you. Amongst the vegetables there are three groups that can be sown :(a) Root vegetables like winter radish and turnips. These will easily grow big enough to eat during the Winter. (b) Spring cabbage to eat as Spring greens or heads ahead of Greyhound in the Spring. (c) Chinese vegetables which grow very quickly and run to seed if you plant them too early. In this group I am including things like Chinese cabbage, Pak Choi, and Mizuna. With good weather these will last up to December. Dead head flowering plants. This not only keeps them looking good, but it encourages them to produce more flowers. If you like large blooms it is worth pinching out some of the side buds on dahlias, and on varieties of hybrid tea roses that tend to produce bunches of smaller flowers rather than nice big ones at the end of the season. Hedges have been growing and most will need a trim in August. I hope that the Summer weather continues, but we also get a worthwhile amount of rain too many plants in my garden are really suffering. From the Sheep Pen After a brief sojourn in a sheep-free, wine rich area in mainland Europe your resident shepherdess is refreshed and ready to report on the up and coming events on the HYOS calendar. Details for all events are featured in the Programme Panel. The sheep are ‘high’ in town this month with meters of sheep bunting along the main thoroughfare and nearby locations. These cheery beasties are the result of hours of toil and many cups of tea in collective workshops and homes throughout the town. Our thanks to Jim Lawrence for donating his material samples, to all who gave their time and material to the cause and to those kind souls who worked patiently to put them in place. All events need a celebrity and HYOS is no exception. Happily August is the month he will make his appearance at the Ansell Community Centre. On Friday 7th August at 6.30pm ‘Shaun the Sheep’ will appear in his latest adventure film. Doors will open at 5pm and you are invited to bring a picnic (drinks available), enjoy sheep displays, join in a sheepish family quiz and then sit back and watch Shaun’s latest humorous escapades. In keeping with the ovine theme Adnams will be holding a free wine tasting day on Saturday 15th August from 11 – 4pm. The world wide selection of red and white wines to be quaffed will be perfect with a lamb dish. If you’re looking for culinary ideas too Sarah Thompson has a tasty suggestion in her recipe column this month. Don’t miss out on the Fidelis ‘Winter Warmer’ Fashion Show so be sure to buy your tickets soon as seating is limited. Fashion guru, Liz Wilson, working in conjunction with Edinburgh Woollen Mill, will choose the clothes to be modelled by several familiar faces. There will also be items on sale and a raffle with attractive prizes. Tickets price includes a welcome drink. Proceeds to the Hadleigh & Boxford Charitable Trust. Preparations are well in hand for the Championsheep Games at the Rugby Club on Saturday 19th September from 10.30 to 3pm. Entry is FREE and not £2 as previously advertised. This will be a fun day for all the family with plenty to see, do and eat. If you are part of a group and would like to take up the light-hearted challenges on offer why not enter a team? Minimum of four people required any age.

Hadleigh Steering Group Regrouped Following the loss of our chair, and slight loss of momentum, the Steering Group has now reformed with new District and Town Councillors and a diverse selection of people bringing skills from key community groups. Hopefully this covers representation of everyone who lives and works in Hadleigh or runs a business here. It will be the responsibility of each member to bring thoughts, ideas and views from their respective community groups and they will be reaching out to everyone for help in shaping our neighbourhood. Community run The Steering Group is not another public sector committee. It is run by the community representatives with technical support from Babergh and Mid Suffolk. It is, importantly, a way of voicing your ideas and wishes and helping steer a way forward on some key issues for the community. The next meeting will be in September and we will include information in each edition of the Hadleigh Community News summarising key matters covered and planned for the following meeting. Members of the public are welcome to attend any meeting – but as we are a little tight on space perhaps you would let us know in advance if you plan to attend. We can always move to a larger venue if more space is needed for particular meetings. The key topics that are likely to be picked up first are; • Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan • Babergh's Local Plan on relevant local site allocations and policies • Corn Exchange Building • LEADERProject (including Year of the Sheep) The September meeting will nominate a new Chair and Vice Chair (nominations have been requested of the Group). The main item will consider ideas for agreeing the focus for the group for the coming year and everyone is invited to send their thoughts about what the Steering Group should focus its energy on both initially and in the longer term. Any suggestions should be sent to Clare Boniface at clare.boniface@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk by 31st August 2015. Contact If you wish to get in contact with the Steering Group and you do not know who is likely to be your most relevant representative, email Clare.boniface@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk. An agenda and more details nearer the time will be available on the Council’s website http://www.babergh.gov.uk/business/economic-development/towncentre-development/hadleigh-steering-group/ We will share a more detailed list of contacts after the next meeting at which time the group may consider introducing a community e-mail contact for the group. The next meeting will be held on 7th September 2015 at 4.15pm - 6pm at the Hadleigh Ram. Members of the public are welcome to attend but are asked to notify Clare Boniface in advance to ensure the room we are using is large enough to accommodate everyone.

Fidelis Activity News AGM & Summer Fling: Liz Wilson opened the meeting and complimented members on their fine summery appearance. She thanked Barbara Tryon for all her hard work as Club Secretary these past ten years. Barbara was then presented with a healthy looking rose bush appropriately named ‘Homage to Barbara’. Liz welcomed the new secretary, Julie Davies, and wished her luck in her new role. The Treasurer, Carole Burne and Publicity & Programme Organiser, Jan Devey, gave their reports, the latter finishing on a more lighthearted note with a reading of an ‘Ode to Fifty Shades of Grey’. On behalf of all the members, June Brown gave a vote of thanks to the Committee for their hard work throughout the year. The meeting closed and Helen and her team from Angel Delights swept in with a delicious summer buffet complete with mouth--watering desserts. Professional musicians ‘Words and Music’ followed on and it didn’t take much to get members on the dance floor gyrating and singing heartily to the duo’s 60’s repertoire.

Vineyard owner, Guy Howard, takes Fidelis’ members around Gifford Hall Vineyard. Giffords Hall Vineyard: The rain held off just long enough for the group to complete a comprehensive guided walking tour of this extensive, family owned and run, vineyard. Our guide, owner Guy Howard talked us through the processes from planting to bottling. The group then repaired to the Wine Tasting Room to try a selection of the vineyard’s produce. Director, Linda Howard, explained the differences between the wines while members were happy to sample and enjoy them all. The Stable Door Café and the Cellar Door Shop were also open for business. It’s not surprising that The Giffords Hall wines are successfully making their mark in the English Wine market with several prestigious trophies to their name and an exclusive presence in restaurants and Waitrose. Future aspirations include a wine from their vineyard being the definitive Wine for East Anglia. All wines can be purchased via their website www.giffordshall.co.uk/index

EAST HOUSE MEADOW/COX’S PARK ENQUIRY Following the discussion and questions being answered the Chair read the two proposals that had been agreed at the Meeting on Thursday 18th June 2015. It was agreed that the words ‘in principle’ be removed from the first proposal so it read as follows: i) that the Town Council agree to support the Town Village Green (TVG) application to protect East House Meadow/Cox's Park, which can be recorded in the written response to the Inspector. This proposal was carried unanimously. It was then agreed that the Clerk would provide a letter for submission to the Inspector from the Town Mayor advising of Hadleigh Town Council’s support. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.05pm Report of the Meeting of the Planning Committee held on 2nd July 2015 Present: Councillors: Angland (Chair), Byrne, Haines, Monks, Wilson, Whiting, Wiltshire and Young APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies for absence had been received from Councillors: Boxford, Fraser, Free, Haylock, Matthews, Sheldrick and Sutcliffe. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 11th June 2015 was confirmed as a correct record and signed. MATTERS ARISING Any Other Relevant Business. The Clerk advised that the Audit Team had completed their report which would now be passed to the Chief Executive of Babergh District Council. There was nothing further to report. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee considered the applications for Planning Consent, details of which are listed below and upon which the following decisions were reached:B/15/00489/LBC 96 Benton Street. Application for Listed Building Consent – Removal of existing conservatory and brick store. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/15/00634/FUL Clivann, Tower Mill Lane, Erection of 1 no. Detached Dwelling. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) Subject to the pre-application comments being addressed. B/15/00637/FHA Black Swan House, 4 Benton Street. Erection of replacement single-storey out-building & balcony & installation of solar panels to rear roof plane. Refusal was recommended (Voting was unanimous). Refusal was recommended due to the solar panels as the property is in a conservation area and overlooks a special landscape area. Also there were concerns

raised over the balcony overlooking a neighbouring garden. Councillors also showed concern that by allowing solar panels in a conservation area would set a precedent on any further applications. B/15/00658/LBC 51 High Street. Application for Listed Building Consent – repair of existing roof slates. Re-roofing with existing slates. Removal of structural column at ground floor, in restaurant. Block up existing internal door at ground floor. Form a new internal door opening in existing ground floor wall. This application was noted. As work has already taken place and this is a retention of application Hadleigh Town Council cannot therefore object but any future work undertaken without planning consent will be observed by Hadleigh Town Council and reported immediately. B/15/00665/FHA 11 Shearman Road. Conversion of attached garage to living accommodation and raising of roof height to provide new bedroom at first floor level. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/15/00694/LBC 97-99 High Street, Application for Listed Building Consent – insertion of 1 no. replacement ground-floor front window (retention of). Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/15/00735/ROC Supreme Petfoods Limited. Application under Section 73 of the Town & Country Planning Act (1990) to vary conditions attached to planning permission B/09/01402 – variation of Condition 01 and 06 to allow operating hours in the hay and straw building to be without interruption from 7am on Mondays to 2pm on Saturdays. Refusal was recommended (Voting was 5 for and 2 against) This was due to the decibels of the noise level (the Environment Noise Assessment clearly states the world health organisation considers 30 decibels will cause sleep disturbance at night) and the impact this would have on neighbouring residents and wildlife. Also it was felt the extra production would increase the output and therefore would increase vehicular movement to and from the company. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority. PLANNING APPLICATIONS: B/15/00412/ADV 45-47 HIGH STREET, B/15/00415/FUL 45-47 HIGH STREET, B/15/00416/LBC 45-47 HIGH STREET It was noted that the above applications have all been withdrawn. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS The Clerk reported that an email received from Peter Freer, Enabling Officer, Babergh District Council, confirming that the Neighbourhood Plan designated area has been accepted for the two wards of Hadleigh. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.25pm. Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed at the meeting of Wednesday 24 June 2015 were: • District Council report Cllr John Ward explained the role of the new Communities Team, which was to work in partnership with local residents and organisations to encourage communities to become more self-reliant. Members of the team could also advise on grants and funding, the purchase of community assets and neighbourhood planning. • County Council report Cllr Gordon Jones referred to a pre-consultation on the future of the Fire and Rescue Service in Suffolk – details were on the website: www.suffolk.gov.uk/fireredesign. With regard to Children’s Centres, he had attended a meeting of the advisory board of the Cherry Tree and Brett River Centres and said the new arrangements appeared to be working well. • Speeding It was agreed to ask residents of Upper Street to keep the PC informed of any accidents or incidents in the vicinity – a letter would be delivered to each house. With regard to the proposed moving of the 30mph speed limit sign near the Marquis, the Clerk would contact SCC to try and arrange a site meeting. • Defibrillators It was agreed to purchase a second defibrillator for Upper Layham from the British Heart Foundation and install it in the telephone box on Upper Street. The defibrillator would come with a free training kit - a mobile kit with everything necessary to train ten people in CPR at one time, including CDs. • Community Payback Project The Chairman had contacted Hadleigh Town Council who had agreed that it would be sensible to submit a joint application for assistance with cleaning the wide verge sloping away from about 400 yards of pavement along the road (B1070) between Hadleigh and Layham. • Accounts & Annual Return for 2014/15 The accounts were approved and the Annual Return signed by the Chairman and the Clerk; this would now go to BDO for external audit. • Audit of public areas Following an audit of the public areas in Layham, the Chairman would seek a meeting with Babergh’s Horticultural Officer to establish what Babergh was prepared to deal with. It was noted that a car had been parked for some time on a verge in Brett Green and grass was growing around it. • Planning - Marquis of Cornwallis The Parish Council was in favour of the proposed adjustment to the design of the car park exit as it would improve the visibility splay; it was also supportive of the ‘rustic’ design of the garden building which was in keeping with the main building. However, Councillors felt that the designs for the new frontage railings and entrance piers, and pergola, did not sit comfortably with the traditional approach to the design of the rest of the site, reflecting a different period in architectural history.

Alpaca escape A few days after the cycle race, two inquisitive alpacas that live in the grounds of Raworth Park, found their way onto the B1070. A small band of brave local people herded them off the road and back into home grazing. Ron Gunn even had time to change into his gaucho shorts – the animals were not going to tussle with him! Thank you to Tanith Laing for photo. Playing Field Rabbit Cull The Playing Field Management Committee is faced with a dilemma. On the one hand we have a conservation area down near the river in which we encourage wild life. On the other hand we have a playing field where people of all ages enjoy informal sporting activity. The rabbits that live in the conservation area seek food by digging deep ‘scrapes’ in the grass surface as far down as the play apparatus. These ‘scrapes’ are often quite deep and it is only a matter of time before someone injures (maybe even breaks) an ankle. What do we do? The Suffolk Wildlife Trust has been consulted and they agree that we need to reduce the rabbit population. This will probably be done over the coming months by shooting at times in the day when the rabbits are active and the field is seldom used by people. As a safety precaution, if and when shooting does take place, a warning notice will be placed on the two gates into the field. Recording Stag Beetles The magnificent stag beetle, is often seen in this parish (between May and August) but far less frequently than in years past. It is now on the endangered species list and the Suffolk Naturalists’ Society is appealing for sightings to be recorded. If you see one, Please call up the website: www.sns.org.uk/forms/stagform.shtml and send in a completed form. If you can’t answer all the questions complete what you can – every bit of information is useful. The picture shows a male (with antlers) and a female. They may look fearsome but are harmless. You may see them flying on a warm summer evening or you may see them on the ground. In both cases they are seeking a mate. They only live as adults in beetle form for a few weeks – for several years they exist as larvae feeding on rotting wood often well below ground level. If you ever dig one up (creamy white and as big as your little finger) bury it right away – with the rotting wood in which it was found. What have you got in your old photograph albums or in those boxes of slides you never get round to throwing away?

These photographs are something of a record of the 1994 Village Fete held on the playing field. On the original it is possible to identify Mrs Lilian Aldous and Mr Nunn (top left), Ken Oliver (top middle) but who is the little girl? Bobby Gales (top right), Evelyn Leach (bottom left) and the Hadleigh High School Swing Band (bottom right). If you have more – or photographs of any other social event in the village, please consider sharing them with the Layham Local History Group. Anything that happened before today is history and deserves to be safely recorded for the future. The Layham Local History Group is working on establishing an archive of copies of photographs and documents to be kept in the village and exhibited now and then. Copies will also be lodged with the Suffolk Record Office – the most important thing about these bits of information being that they are accessible to all for research. Imagine the pleasure you would get if you were a descendent of Lilian Aldous, were researching your family tree and you found the lovely picture of her to add to your file! If you can offer anything at all to be scanned for our collection, please contact Michael Woods on (01473 823798) or michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net

Layham Playgroup We have enjoyed playing in the garden lots over the last few weeks. Water play has been a big hit as has making tents! Sadly it has come to that time of year when we have to say goodbye to a few of our children who are moving on to big school and nursery. We wish you all the best in your new journey and hope you have just as much fun as you did with us! We concluded our summer term with another successful fundraiser. Thank you to all of the children and parents who joined us for our animal experience with the help from Kimmy’s mobile petting zoo. The children got to see many different mammals, reptiles and insects and were thoroughly mesmerised by each and every one. I think the meerkat and the skunk were the favourites. We would like to wish all of our children (and families) a fabulous summer holiday and look forward to seeing you in September. Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Government funding is available for 3 year olds and in certain cases for some 2 year olds. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk We would like to wish all of our ladybird children a lovely summer holiday and look forward to seeing you in September with all of you holiday stories.

Pause for Thought Did you watch the Eurovision contest on the 23rd May? It was hosted from Austria and their theme was Building Bridges. I thought the choreography of all the countries was brilliant. I was surprised that Russia didn’t win with their song, “A million voices which was about unconditional love. When I heard about this unconditional love I thought about Jesus unconditional love for us. We can come to Him if we are a really good person or even a very bad person and He will forgive us of our sins. All of us are aware that we sin and need forgiveness in order to be accepted by God. In Romans 3 verse 23 “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. and in Romans 6 verse 23 says “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. Another song that stood out for me was “In the name of Love from the country of Poland. The song was about a girl who had been in a car accident at the age of 20 and left disabled. She was determined to pursue her career as a singer and never give up. In the name of love Jesus will never give up on us. He loves us so much that He can save anyone that comes to Him and He will make us a new creation. Jan Rogers

Poetry Corner Fantasy Do you have a fantasy A special thought that sets you free Do you dream of untold wealth Or true love, not being left on the shelf Do you crave a life that’s free from stress Or do you yearn for work success As long as you have your health and hope No fantasy is unreachable, no time to mope You see the little things that make life worthwhile Are free, no need to live in style A smile, a cuddle, helping a friend in need Is truely noble, your heart is freed To enjoy your fantasies, maybe they will come true Hopes, aspirations, it could happen to you. What We Did On Our Holiday (12) £3.50 on the door (accompanied children £2.50). On Friday 21st August at 7.30pm we are delighted to present a fitting conclusion to our successful spring and summer programme. This heartwarming comedy is the spin-off from the BBC TV's hugely successful comedy “Outnumbered”. David Tennant and Rosamund Pike take on the roles of Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner from the BBC series to create a truly family film. As Doug and Ali, they head to Scotland for the 75th Birthday of Doug's unwell dad Gordy – played to perfection by Billy Connolly, who finds that he really only gets on with Doug's three children, respecting them for their honesty and he confides to them his hopes and fears. But surrounded by relatives they innocently reveal the ins and outs of their family life - particularly that of their parents! It is impossible not to enjoy this big-hearted and sweet natured British family film with its great cast to help create a memorable evening for everyone. During the interval we will have our usual selection of teas, coffees, soft drinks and the ever-popular choc-ices.

THE OBSERVER Hadleigh Community Choir It is difficult to summarise their annual summer concert as we all know at least someone involved and they all pay a subscription to be part of the choir. However the venue (U.R.C.),was full of their supporters who had a jolly good time and that really is what it is all about. The evening started off at a blistering pace, (It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing), which made the remainder of their programme a hard act to follow. However there were the outstanding soloists who evened things up. The themed readings were a bit hard going as the last reader tried to achieve a bit of a hushed air but nobody could really hear him anyway. Perhaps, and I only say this from blind ignorance, they should miss the readings out and instead recruit an interlocuter, who could provide both the choir and the inexhaustible Simon a breather. Corn Exchange This is in the news as to it's future. It will be in for all the wrong reasons if the disgraceful state of the pavement in front is not sorted. This is not a case of unavailable funding it is more a case of priority for public safety. As regards future use Hadleigh Town Council are very interested in making a serious bid for this building as per the report of their minutes in HCN. Let us hope that they are given full support by the community and are flooded with practical suggestions as a result of the open days to look around the building. The town has trebled in size in the last fifty plus years and this will continue to be the case. It is vital to retain such a building for Community use. Hadleigh Jazz Club The George Shearing evening went as expected to a full house. I wondered how the powerhouse style of our host George would go with the smoothness of the celebrated George. It mattered not as the sound system brought out the full force of the bassist. Coupled with the leader mumbling on to a few sitting in front at times it was hard going. Hadleigh Quarry Well it hasn't taken long for the new owners to ‘ride roughshod’ over the conditions of use. Out of hours working and noise issues have been reported as occurring, don't even mention the obstructive sign and fallen trees. There is little hope of County Council Officer's taking an interest. Perhaps the two elected County Councillors will? Answers on the back of a stamp will do. Hadleigh Primary School (or is it Junior) As I passed between Avis and the Co-op going back to my car, I was stopped by a young lad (Frazer?), who very politely suggested I look at the stall in the Co-op entrance. "What are you selling?" "Toffee apples, lemonade and sweets", "Do I look like a toffee apple eater?" "Well, there are other things". There was as well, mainly of decorated flower pots that are normally thrown away by the dozen. Starting off at 50p I was upgraded to the £2 ones in front of an eager group at this old guy flashing the cash. It was all part of a national competition sponsored by Virgin Media. The aim is educational and learning the value of money. There are seventy five pupils in on this and it looks like they will raise £1500/ £2,000. At the conclusion of the week the money will all be laid out for the participants to see what Two Grand looks like and what it could buy. They may not win the national competition but they certainly will be the better for the experience. I only wish I had the time to have seen them at the rejuvenated Hadleigh market on the Friday. The money raised will be split equally twixt the school and cancer research. By the way my fingers were a strange green from the paint when I got home. I want my money back!!!!!! The Observor

Dear Sir, I am sure that many residents or visitors to Hadleigh have been frustrated, like me, about the lack of a sign for Hadleigh on the Ipswich bound A12. I know that even I as a resident have occasionally driven straight past the Hadleigh exit when it is dark and visitors have frequently been on a scenic detour to reach Hadleigh. This should be no more. After nearly two years of lobbying and chasing, the sign for Hadleigh on the A12 is set to be in place this month. Additionally, residents in Benton Street and Hadleigh as a whole will be pleased to hear that a weight limit sign is being erected adjacent to the south-bound lane, which may alleviate some of the problems that we have with heavy lorries entering our narrow streets. Clearly signage is not the only answer to some of the traffic problems we encounter in Hadleigh and Benton Street in particular, but it is a start. I would like to thank our MP, James Cartlidge, for helping to progress this matter. I have a date arranged for later in August to meet James Finch, the Suffolk County Councillor responsible for Highways and Transport to personally show him the traffic problems in our town and in particular Benton Street, so hopefully, we shall move forward in making Hadleigh a safer place to live. Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South

Dear Sir, On behalf of the Suffolk Committee of the ABF (the soldier’s charity) thank you to the many people who, on 10th July, in Hadleigh, contributed a total £618.22 to the fund. We thank the many generous donors, and our collectors, members of the 41 Club, working with soldiers from the 4 Air Assault Battalion REME. The scope of the fund is quite surprising – anyone interested could learn a great deal on line by entering “ABF – The Soldiers Charity”. John Hart

Dear Sir, I’ve noticed grass areas in Hadleigh, one next to where I live in Malyon Road, and one off Oxford Drive have not, at all this year, been cut. It’s up to my chest in some areas! After ringing Babergh to be told the number of cuts has dropped from 14 to 10 and ours was next on the list to be cut, three weeks ago, it still hasn't been cut! Hadleigh is looking unkept. Children have no place to play, the parks have been took over by tall weeds and grass, dog poo and rubbish. Young children can’t be seen due to the height of the grass, older children get bored and then start problems for others, hanging around outside houses, entering empty property gardens. Hadleigh has put the parks and grassed areas there, shouldn't they be kept tidy for good use? After ringing Babergh, a few days later a man in his little ride-on cutter came through the park, circled it, and left, leaving the rest uncut. Thank you man on mobile grass cutter, but what about the rest? It took less than a minute! Dog poo is a huge issue at Beaumont park and it’s walkways, please put more bins up, fine those responsible, or not responsible as the case may be. Put poo bags with the bins, no excuses then is there? Mrs. S Wasteney

The Hadleigh Thrift Shop Limited We had a very successful visit to Albania in June. We checked on the family living in our little house - Zamira, the mother, is looking after it so well and is thrilled to be living in a proper house with her children for the first time in her life. She is so pleased that the people of Hadleigh and district have made this possible. Another family who are also pleased are Palumb and his three children. We have made their house habitable and wants us to convey his grateful thanks as well. The youngest of the three orphan boys we support is now in full time school (it took a while to pursuade him) but he is trying hard, and his reward is that we have arranged for him to play football with a local team and he is loving it. I saw him again in Huffers and ordered a cup of coffee Nearly ordred a cheesecake covered in liquid coffee. I sat in the corner hiding my face so he couldn’t see me And to my great surprise he bought me a cup of tea. He found my poems funny and wanted to see me again, But told him I’ll only come if it doesn’t pour with rain. Margaret Blomfield

A Big Thank You to Hadleigh Cycling Club We would like to thank the Hadleigh Cycling Club who achieved a fantastic feet of cycling endurance when 10 riders cycled from Marble Arch in London to L,arc de Triomphe in Paris in less than 24 hours in support of the Brendan Oakes Trust. The challenge had been in planning for a number of months and was completed over the last weekend of June. The ride has raised over £7000.00 for the Trust. This money will be used to improve the teenagers room at Ipswich hospital. Valerie and I cannot thank all those who participated, whether on a bike or as part of the support team, enough for what they have done. This money will make a big difference to the experience that teenagers will have when undergoing treatment for cancer at Ipswich hospital. Mark and Valerie Oakes

Stoke by Nayland Club Captain Julian Lamb celebrated his Captain’s Day with an early breakfast for a hundred players who then started the competition with a shotgun start on the Gainsborough course. The Captain had devised a format made up of three six hole sections, interesting pin positions and double point holes. It was an expensive day for Roger Toone who scored his first hole in one on the tricky 9th hole. The competition was won by Graham Vandervord and John Walker with 66 points and their prizes were presented by the Lady Captain, Eileen Hands.

SKy Watch Perseid Meteor Shower For those who like to wish upon a falling star August is the month for you. Celestial fireworks are a guarantee. This shower officially begins on July 17th this year, but at this time the moon will interfere but the 2 dates for your diary are August 12th and 13th, these are the 2 nights I can absolutely guarantee you'll see shooting stars. The moon is well out of the way, so clear skies allowing, you can fill your boots. As an example, 2 years ago I tallied up 210 meteors in 3 hours. So what are meteor showers? On any clear night you will probably see a shooting sta , these are known as sporadic meteors and can literally be anything from tiny dust particles to man made space junk falling back to earth as their orbits decay. Meteor showers are organised debris paths in space that are the remnants of comets that have passed on their way toward the Sun over the centuries; the comet responsible for this shower has the name; 109P Swift-Tuttle.

The particles we encounter each July and August are grain size pieces of dust expelled from the comets nucleus that have spent centuries following on their parents orbital path. The parent comet orbits the Sun once every 133 years, and was last near the Sun in 1992 and next approach will be in July 2126, when the comet will pass close to earth. This comet is the most dangerous object in the Solar system being some 15 miles wide, and when in our vicinity travels at 40,000 mph; the other problem is the comet travels in a retrograde motion (opposite to the planets in direction around the Sun), that gives potential for a head-on collision. Doing the mathematics, that gives a comet - earth impact potential of 27 times that of the asteroid that kissed the dinosaurs goodnight 65 million yrs ago. The comet will come perilously close to us in the year 4479 September 15th, not our problem but it will be someones. To view the meteors this year, go outside at around 22.30 23.00 and look in the direction of northeast and just relax and wait - it won't be long before you see them whizzing across the sky. The velocity they travel is 58km/s or 30 miles per second and are burning up in the atmosphere 50 miles above your head as the earth's atmosphere creates the friction needed to literally vaporise the particles. Some will be weak but you may very well see one fragment, sonic booms can often be heard with these events. Their lives may be brief to your eyes, but these particles have been around for 4.5 billion years in the cold depths of space. Until next month my friends, clear skies to you all. Before I go, I must wish my beautiful daughter, Keira - Louise, a very happy 4th birthday for August 20th. Any questions, please contact me at: neilnorman03@gmail.com Neil Norman

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Mens’ Club Championship 2015 On Saturday 4th July the Stoke by Nayland prestigious club championship saw a field of 90 players tee off in hot and sunny conditions. The championship is played over two days with a cut at the end of the first day. The top thirty gross scores and the top thirty nett scores, plus ties, go through to the second round. On day one the players faced the demanding Gainsborough Course and on day two the Andrew Searles and Iain Younger picturesque but no less demanding Constable Course. After the first round it was former champions Ian Carter and Iain Younger in the lead, both two under. On Sunday there was a total transformation in playing conditions. The early starters kept dry but those with later tee times, which included the leaders, faced torrential rain and new challenges. However the first round leaders remained at the top of the leaderboard with Iain Younger with a gross score of 150 finally winning the Club Championship by two shots from Ian Carter. Callum Hensby took third place on countback. Iain Younger was presented with the Club Championship Trophy by Club Captain Julian Lamb, a title that Iain had previously won in 2006. The AJB Nett Cup went to Andrew Searles with Ian Collett as runner up. Results: 1st Iain Younger 150; 2nd Ian Carter 152; 3rd Callum Hensby 153. AJB Nett Cup 1st Andrew Searles 138; 2nd Ian Collett 142; 3rd Paul Lankaster 145.

Lady Captain’s Day 2015 Thursday, 9th July saw a beautiful sunny and warm day welcome Stoke-byNayland’s Lady Captain, Eileen Hands, to her Lady Captain’s day. Over forty ladies played in the golf competition which was split into three sets of six holes, six holes of 4BBB, six aggregate stableford and six greensomes. Lady Captain, Eileen Hands, together with her husband Alan stationed themselves at the halfway house where Eileen provided a selection of home made cakes, sausage rolls and very welcome pimms heavily laced with bite sized pieces of fruit. More than sixty ladies, along with a few gentlemen including club captain Julian Lamb, sat down to enjoy their meal following the ladies golf competition. It was wonderful to be joined for the meal by several past lady golfers who still enjoy the very active social side of the ladies golf section but are no longer able to play. During her speech before the prize giving Eileen thanked many people for making her day one to remember with special thanks going to vice captain Betty Cox for her organisation of the day. Eileen’s theme was butterflies, as reflected in the dressing of the golf buggy and colours pink and mauve, reflected in the ladies golfing clothes. Overall winners of the golf competition were Carol Mehrer and Barbara Jones who finished with an impressive score of 57 points over the whole three sections of the game.

Cyclists off to a Flyer Hadleigh Cycling Club’s first sportive will take place on Sunday, 20th September 2015, with riders choosing between two routes of 50 and 100kms. The sportive has been named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. The routes will take riders past landmarks including the Gayford family home on Angel Street, RAF Wattisham where he served as commander and his final resting place in Naughton. To enter, go to www.gayfordflyer.info , the cost of entry is £10. For further information about the Gayford Flyer, please contact Richard Holdaway on 07940 592945 or email: rjh_mail@yahoo.com The sportive is part of town’s inaugural cycling festival, with a Junior Go-Ride event at the High School on Saturday, 19th March. This is an excellent opportunity for youngsters to receiving coaching and experience racing in a safe environment. The club is hoping to capitalise on the national and countywide interest in cycling, enthuse children and their parents, draw hundreds of cyclists and supporters to the town, benefiting Hadleigh’s community and businesses. Adam Chamberlin, Chair of the Club said, “We believe that this weekend supports the Suffolk’s Year of Cycling initiative and links with the County Council’s ambition to be the “most active county. “It will also help to ensure that there is a legacy for cycling in Hadleigh after the visit of the professionals in June with the Women’s Tour and the Tour of Britain in September.” The sportive is supported by The Pedal House, The George Public House, Sunny Day Cycleworks and Crockatt Lane Garage. The club runs weekly junior coaching sessions and a range of regular rides for its members. Please visit http://hadleighcyclingclub.org/ to find out more about the club. For any general queries, please email info@hadleighcyclingclub.org or connect with the club via social media for latest information – Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club/Twitter: @HadleighCycling

Great news from Hadleigh Bowling Club Four of our lady members have achieved the National Finals to be held in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. They are Di Miller, Christine Woollard, Margaret Bird and Helen Swift. This is a massive achievement and we wish them good luck! Two of our newer members, Ivan Clements and Mick Barrand unfortunately lost in the semi-final of Suffolk County Novices Competition. Similarly our Club Captain, Peter Miller lost in the semi-final of Champion of Champions. Nevertheless we wish to say well done to you all for getting so far. In league matches the Samford team and EBA mixed triples are both second in the table. The men's triples, who were promoted last season, are sitting midtable in the second division. Our Wednesday Federation team is also mid table but with a good run can win promotion next season. Thursday Federation "A" and "B" are both currently top of their leagues and if this form continues will win promotion! As you have read we are a very active club in National, County and Local competitions as well as running many internal competitions. If you would like more information about Hadleigh Bowling Club please contact our secretary Fred Creed on Hadleigh 822482

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group It has been an encouraging month for the 1st XI, who have given themselves a fighting chance of avoiding relegation with three wins out of four. The return after the school term of new Suffolk bowler Dominic Manthorpe has given the team a boost, and not only with the ball, as Dom played significant late order innings against Frinton and Wivenhoe to help us over the line in tight run chases. We are now turning the tables on sides that early in the season we were losing to comfortably, but after a defeat to 3rd-placed Witham and games coming up against title-chasing Sudbury and Mildenhall, it is looking like a scrap with Halstead and Maldon to stay out of the bottom 3. Already the final match of the season, at home to Halstead, is looking more and more like a play-off. The 2nd XI have their sights set on a promotion battle, after a hot streak of results in mid-season. There is not much doubt about who has been the player of the month. Marc Lloyd was already enjoying an impressive season, but in his last four innings he has only been dismissed once and currently averages 84 for the season. Unsurprisingly for a maths teacher, he is reminding us all of his stats on a regular basis. Nadie Abdul isn’t far behind, and when they open the innings together no boundary or parked car is safe. We go to press before games 2, 3 and 4 in the ECB Under-19 T20 competition, but game 1 saw the “Hadleigh Hurricanes” blow away the Sudbury Talbots on the hottest day of the year, so hopes are high that the team can progress to Suffolk Finals Day. All the lads have embraced the spirit of the competition, and it is surely only a matter of time before there is a senior T20 league to arrest the waning popularity of 40-over Sunday cricket. The junior season is drawing to a close and it has been another successful one for our teams. The Boys Under-15s have finished unbeaten, the Under13s and Under-11s have impressed everyone with their all-round skills, while several of our girls have made their debuts in senior cricket. It is just a shame that so many clubs are struggling to field sides, and so much of the short junior season has been dogged by concessions and cancellations. Gary Wiles

Barnardo’s 2015 House to House Collection Thanks to Angel Street and Bell Mews Many thanks to everybody in Angel Street and Bell Mews, once again, for your donations to this year’s Barnardo’s House to House Collection. You very generously donated a total of £165.47, which I am pleased to say is an increase on last year’s collection. In addition, my grateful thanks to Millie Forbes for your assistance again this year. Barnardo’s runs more than 800 vital projects across the UK and all contributions really do make a big difference. Last year, over 200,000 lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children, young people and families were transformed. Without your support, this work would not be possible so a big thank you from everyone at Barnardo’s. Well done! Sarah Loftus
