Nursing Home staff receive accolade

Staff at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, feel honoured to have received a certificate from the Lord Lieutenant for Suffolk praising their “selflessness” and “sense of duty” during the pandemic.

In an accompanying letter to home manager Jan Seal, the Lord Lieutenant, Clare, Countess of Euston, writes: “I would like to thank you for the contribution you have made during the extraordinary and difficult circumstances of the Covid 19 crisis.” The letter highlights the “innovation, collaboration, courage and generosity” demonstrated by people across the county, describing it as “truly inspirational and uplifting”.

It continues: “Our care homes have been at the forefront of the battle. Thank you for the huge amount of work you have done to care for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.” The Countess describes it as a privilege to award the Lord Lieutenant’s special certificate of merit for Hadleigh Nursing Home’s “remarkable contribution.”

Jan said: “It’s been a very challenging time for everyone, physically, emotionally and mentally, so it is a lovely thought from the Lord Lieutenant to send us this certificate and letter. “Staff have been amazing, pulling together as a team, and we have come out the other side stronger.” She said they were looking forward to developing a memorial garden during the spring to commemorate not just residents who had sadly passed away during the pandemic but also members of the wider Hadleigh community cruelly affected by Covid.

The ancient Toppesfield Bridge in Duke Street, said to date from the 14th century, is the oldest bridge in the county still in use as part of a public highway. On the downstream side there are stone ribbed arches clearly showing as part of its main brick construction. The bridge has been widened on the upstream side at some point, and the different construction with the brick cutwaters can be well seen. (Image view side). The parapets to the sides of the bridge have been raised and the evidence in the brickwork is apparent.

It is curious that the bridge has a curve as it spans the river.

There is a long-told story concerning this bridge. One day in past years, a carrier by the name of Johnson was driving his horse and waggon over the bridge, for some reason the horse shied, and it, and the waggon including the unfortunate Johnson all tumbled over the parapet and into the river, and never to be seen again. The story grew up that alongside the bridge there was a large hole in the riverbed which had consumed everything. From that day the story of ‘Johnson’s Hole’ was born.

During bridge strengthening works in the 1980s, a coffer dam was constructed to allow work on the base of the bridge to take place. Once the riverbed within the dam was drained, no ‘Johnson’s Hole’ was revealed! (Ref. HA CB 1351) The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council, Archives Department, The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh. IP7 5DN. A team of experienced volunteers’ catalogue and transcribe its large number of documents and images, all of which are held in archive-approved conditions.

Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh Back for 2021!

The people of Hadleigh responded wonderfully last year in the midst of lockdowns when we changed from opening up our gardens to the public and replaced it with a photo competition. 356 people joined in with their photos and votes. A great response and a slice of hope and fun in difficult times.

So we’re back again! This year we’re moving the event to 4 September 2021 with both a virtual photo competition as well as the traditional open gardens for people to visit.

We’ll give you details about how to enter the competition much later in the year, but in the meantime please take photos of your gardens during the Spring and Summer ready to submit up to two of them. With your help we can make the competition even bigger in 2021 and raise more money to repair and maintain our beautiful and historic St Mary’s Church.

Meantime keep enjoying all that gardening offers us in challenging times like this. And stay safe and get out those cameras!

We at Hadleigh United Reformed Church are very sorry that our friends at Leading Lives will no longer be meeting on our premises . We have so enjoyed having them in the Ansell Centre ever since they lost their facilities at East House thirteen years ago. Their drama performances were a particular highlight for many in our church - a great way for the wider community to see the personalities and gifts of this special group. They always supported community events such as the Christmas Tree Festival, the Year of the Sheep and Hadleigh Open Gardens. They also planted and looked after two tubs in the Community Garden outside the Ansell Centre. We wish them well in their new venues and hope to see some of them out and about in Hadleigh again soon once lockdown is over.

Trees, trees, trees!

We all love trees. We love them for their beauty, long life and the way they mark the seasons. We need to protect those we have and plant many more because they help fight climate change by capturing and storing carbon, support wildlife and reduce flooding.

Hadleigh has a variety of beautiful and ancient trees and we have some great champions who are leading the way with their tree planting efforts. Councillor McLeod has sourced over 200 trees to plant in the new cemetery extension which will be planted with the help of volunteers from HEAT and the High School has also set up its own tree nursery and planted lots of trees in the school grounds. And of course lots of us in Hadleigh are planting our own trees too.

The Government is committed to planting 11million trees by 2022 and BBC’s Countryfile has launched its ‘Plant Britain’ campaign to get 750,000 trees planted.

Perhaps we could get all these new trees in Hadleigh registered on the Countryfile site (plantbritain.co.uk) and see how green we can make Hadleigh To help support all this great work HEAT plans to identify areas where trees can be planted, source saplings and help plant more trees in Hadleigh – and to be part of Countryfile’s Plant Britain campaign. We also need to look after the trees that we already have and use tree protection orders more widely.

So….if you have land or know somewhere suitable for planting trees, are interested in helping us plant trees, have unwanted ‘orphan’ trees that have self-seeded in your garden or know of a valuable tree that needs protecting…let us know or come join us!

Hadleigh Nursing Home residents send letter of support to student nurse struggling in lockdown

Residents at Hadleigh Nursing Home have written a moraleboosting letter to a student nurse struggling with the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

They were prompted by a Facebook plea from Chloe Greet’s mother Emma, who wrote: “My daughter is studying to be a student nurse at Colchester.

She is really struggling with the isolation.

She has not come home as she is on a placement. “Here is where I’m hoping you can help. I am looking for people to help lift her spirits through a simple letter.”

Pete Vano, maintenance person at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, said: “My partner saw the Facebook post and I immediately thought our lovely residents could help. “They have experienced the isolation of the coronavirus lockdown themselves with family visits having to be stopped for long periods during the past year to protect them from the virus.”

He sat down with a group of residents and included all their messages in a letter to Chloe. Among them, Yolanda Farthing wrote: “To choose to be a nurse is a most admirable career…I think nurses are God’s angels on earth, you will be in my prayers.”

Pamela Simmons wrote: “Keep up the good work. I have not been able to see my family either. But I have lovely people and nurses looking after me. We have bad and good days but we are still here to tell the tale, bless you.”

June Ede wrote: “I hope that once this is all over you get to have a lovely big family party. Well done, keep up the good work.” Alan Matthews added: “I think nurses are beautiful inside and out.”

Frost & Partners and The Porch Project Charity

At the start of 2020 we announced that we had selected to work with and support The Porch Project, which supports young people in and around Hadleigh, throughout 2020. Our aim for the year was to raise at least £3,000 throughout the partnership.

2020 was quite obviously a very different and difficult year for everyone. However, Frost & Partners are very pleased to confirm that we have exceeded the target that was set for the year.

Neil Parker and Helen Kebby, Directors at Frost & Partners, said: “We are delighted to have agreed to support and work with The Porch Project for 2020, and the total amount raised for the year is £3,200. We believe that it is very important to continue working with and helping the young people in Hadleigh and the surrounding area.”

The Porch Project was started in 2009 and engages with local young people between the ages of 11 and 20 years. It began when young people gathered in St Mary’s Church porch because they had nowhere else to go. Instead of asking them to move on, they were invited into the church and offered somewhere safe they could regularly meet and socialise and so the Porch Project was born.

We have all listened to lots of politicians and medical advisors on TV over the last year but when talking about “essential food shopping” they only ever mention supermarkets!

However, we are very pleased to say that, as great as supermarkets are, there are alternatives.

There is a wealth of local independent food producers in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas. We may not always have the economy of scale of supermarkets but we do have other qualities in bucket loads such as personal service and innovation.

At Hollow Trees Farm Shop the whole team have adapted to working in masks and staying behind screens. We are constantly sanitising hands, trolleys and baskets and social distancing. All working hours have been adjusted to ensure we are in smaller, separate teams, all to help stop the spread of the virus between our visitors and ourselves. We are all thankful and proud of such a resilient, hard working team. We are also thankful to all of our customers who continue to support Hollow Trees Farm Shop.

STATIONERY ESSENTIALS Christmas 2020 was, without doubt, a very strange experience for those of us at The Christmas Present Trust. Normally we would have had an army of volunteers to decorate the Ansell Centre on Christmas Eve, a huge celebratory meal and entertainment for guests and volunteers on Christmas Day, and then the clear up on Boxing Day. This year, however, saw just the two of us in the Ansell Centre on Christmas Eve, peeling vegetables and preparing everything for the following day. We missed the fun that normally accompanies this event, a casualty of the Covid crisis.

However, thanks to an army of volunteers, we were able to deliver 90 meals safely on Christmas Day as far afield as Stratford St Mary, Boxford and Highlands Road! A big cheer to those of you who gave up a part of your day to help, and who made sure that all precautions were followed to keep everyone safe. Many of those who received the meal said how lovely it was to share part of Christmas Day with such lovely people.

As always, we could not have managed without the kindness of all those who donated time, money and assistance. Particular thanks go to:- Hadleigh Community News, Stuart Morris Textiles (for the beautiful tea towels), Earl Stonham Women’s Institute (for some glorious mince pies), Adnams Hadleigh, East of England Co-op, Franey and Rand charities, The Cooking Experience, Hadleigh Cares, Erivica Cakes, The Ansell Centre, Sweet Memories, Charlotte (hand printed bags for the gifts), Ipswich Building Society and all those who helped out throughout the year.

Make Lockdown Count

There’s no denying 2021 hasn’t got off to the best start with lockdown #3 well under way. But at least the Covid-19 vaccine rollout is also well under way so maybe there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

We’ve all had to make adjustments to our lifestyle over the last year: working from home, home schooling, Zoom meetings, limited social lives & even less opportunity to go on holiday. Then, of course, if you or a family member has been unfortunate enough to contract Covid you’ve had the added stress of being unwell. The list goes on & all these things can play havoc with our eating habits. We could be too busy (trying to be teacher, employee, homemaker all at the same time) to make proper healthy meals; or not busy enough because we can’t meet with family & friends and end up grazing all day long, usually on all the unhealthy stuff.

On top of that we probably ‘treated’ ourselves to lots of ‘extras’, especially as any hopes of a family Christmas was wrenched away from us at the last minute! Finishing off these up probably does even more damage!

So, it’s no wonder we haven’t really noticed our waistlines have expanded because we’re wearing our comfy stretchy clothes (or pyjamas!) all day!!

Over 1.4 million more children rode their bikes during the first lockdown in 2020, according to Sport England’s annual survey. British Cycling welcomed the news and pointed to the reduced traffic on the roads at that time, arguing it highlighted how changing the environment can have a transformational impact on children’s activity levels.

The Active Lives Children and Young People Survey results showed that between May and July the number of children aged 5-11 cycling for fun or fitness increased by 18.4% compared to 2019.The number cycling for travel to places such as schools also increased by 5.6%.

Traffic in the UK fell to its lowest level in 65 years during the first coronavirus lockdown, with travel on the nation’s roads plummeting to levels not seen since 1955. This, combined with an increase in free time for many people, meant cycling experienced an unprecedented boom during this period.

By April, UK bike sales were booming. Responding to this, British Cycling launched Let’s Ride Local www.letsridelocal.co.uk, a micro-site designed to encourage family riding, featuring routes, winter tips, advice and games.

Hadleigh Cycling Club responded by promoting local routes. On our website, you can find short circular routes covering the Wenham, Layham, Raydon and Polstead Loops, as well as the Railway Walk. These routes have low traffic levels and are ideal for novice cyclists and family groups. Keep an eye out for the odd horse rider and tractor and beware some the roads can be a bit muddy!

We little dogs have a reputation for being noisy creatures with plenty to say.

Nevertheless, I sometimes wonder what to write as your magazine deadline approaches but this time Mum has an important message for anyone struggling to look after their animals PLEASE DO NOT ABANDON YOUR PETS! We currently have space to take in animals so if you, or someone you know, needs help, please get in touch by leaving your name and number on 01787 210888. Mother and daughter staffies, Alice and Tia are amongst our animals re-homed last year. The pair soon settled into their new home and now enjoy being thoroughly spoilt. It is taking much longer than usual to work through the waiting list of people looking for new pets. Apologies for this but it's unavoidable in the present climate and the prospect of holding fundraising events is still a long way off. Please hold onto good quality items until further notice but we would be grateful for clean duvets, blankets, towels and newspapers. It’s very cold and muddy outside, even awkward old Ollie (the Black) Cat is staying indoors recently. This year some 450 vouchers worth £9.00 each were distributed to the over 70s in Hadleigh. The vouchers were funded by the Christmas Appeal and the Committee would like to salute and thank very much indeed those businesses and organisations who were able to help this year. The grand sum of £3890 was raised and this was a tremendous result considering all the difficulties local businesses have faced during the past 10 months. Thanks again everyone! Hadleigh Hares 5 & 10 Mile Race 2020

The Hadleigh Hares had to put their thinking caps on over autumn months to see how their annual 5, 10 mile & junior races could go ahead in November with the ever-changing Coronavirus situation.

After much deliberation, head scratching and the dawning realisation that it would not be possible to run the race weekend as normal the Hares took a different approach.

The committee wanted a positive outcome for the community from the unfortunate situation while keeping as much of the original race as possible in the circumstances. As a result they set about arranging a “virtual 5 mile race”.

The Virtual 5 mile race could be completed by club members or runners from other clubs in any location over the weekend of the 14th & 15th November and subsequently submitting their times to the club to see who “won”. The only requirement was to run a 5 mile loop and not down a 5 mile hill to provide some consistency across all athletes.

Instead of the usual race entry fee, participants were asked to donate a minimum of £3 to Melanoma Focus via the Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/hadleigh-hares.

This is the designated charity of the Chisnall family in memory of John Chisnall a highly respected member of the Hadleigh Hares who sadly passed away of skin cancer in 2013 aged 51. The Chisnall family hold a regular cake stand at the Hares race weekends and this seemed an appropriate way to continue to support a charity close to their hearts.

The pending November lock-down did not dampen the enthusiasm for people to take part in this virtual event with over 40 competitors submitting a time for adjudication.

The race winners were: John Scaife (M) 29m 42 secs Maria Ward (F) 39mins 28 secs.

In total the race raised £1000 for Melanoma Focus. The Hares would like to thank the Chisnall family for their continuing support each year and all the race competitors who generously donated to the cause.

A special mention also goes to Matthew Davis who also donated his fee for setting up the Hares new website. We all hope that 2021 will bring a return to the usual race format in November.

Affecting about 15 to 20 percent of people tinnitus is a condition where noises are heard when there is no external source, usually in the ears or in the head.

Many people however don’t understand that it isn't a condition itself but it's a symptom of an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury or a circulatory system disorder.

Hello Readers, how confused is everyone? Hopefully, by the time you read this, the incidence of COVID-19 in our region will have begun to drop.

But getting started again?!!!

Just like everyone else, riding simulators have had many changes of protocol issued from above. There was a moment in January when we could have been used, then not, then possibly, and now: “wait and see.”

That’s what Babs and I are doing at the moment.

The live horses and ponies continue with their routines of eating and sleeping, occasionally playing with each other, and waiting with ears pricked for more hay to arrive. They are blissfully unaware of the costs of their upkeep.

This is where I’m going to make an appeal for help! I know all charities are struggling to keep afloat, but if you felt able to support this one we should all be very grateful. There are fun ways to do this, even though all our usual money making events have halted. Sponsor a Pony still runs, so does the 100 Club, and both can be found on our website. If you cannot use the web, how about giving our two wonderful volunteers who run these schemes a ring? I’ll reintroduce you to two of our hungriest horses: Parys Finisterre is the dark bay, tacked up here in a portrait taken in by Ellie in 2020. She came to us in 2010, ready made for dressage work since we had the possibility of entering one of our young riders in international competitions.

Alas, that was not to be, but Parys has managed to be the mainstay of our rides for older more savvy riders and she is much loved. I rather think she has formed relationships with some of her charges. Clever girl.

Bryn, pictured there with a mouthful, is a silver dun, and he arrived in 2017 thanks to s cash grant from the Riding for the Disabled Association, He is also part of the big boys team, helping the taller riders to have a good time on his strong back. He is also one of the youngest members of the herd and took time to settle. I can remember Lyn describing him as a ‘typical teenager.’ Well now he’s a respected member of the workforce and knows his job. Both he and Parys eat a lot of hay and feed so if you feel able to spare a few pounds to help fill their bellies, thank you.

After the season of mud and wet weather may your days get longer and sunnier, Readers. See you next month, and best wishes form all the costly four legged workers here at the Centre.

With a bit of luck I shall be 80, I know, I can’t believe it either, on the 8th of July and I thought, what can I do to mark that? I quite like to walk so I first thought about a hundred miles over four days, 25 miles each day. Well that’s almost a marathon, 26.2mls, so it turned into four marathons over four days on 8th/9th/10th/12th July.

Each day will start and finish at the obelisk at the bottom of George Street, and the plan is three of them will be mainly cross country footpaths. One will be on the Hadleigh 5 & 10 Routes.

January traditionally sees the RBL’s Annual County Conference take place. This year for the very first time, the conference was held on Zoom. Who would have thought that just 12 months ago we would all become Zoom masters!!

In January, we also look back and reflect on the previous year and despite being knocked for six by the pandemic, we actually did quite well.

We managed to mark Armed Forces Day, VE Day 75, VJ Day 75 and of course Remembrance Day. All very were different from the norm, but each given the usual level of dignity and respect.

Our big event for 2020 was to be a VE Day 75 Tea Party for 75 guests all aged 75 or over. They were to be entertained with a 1940’s fashion show and a war time singalong. When this was cancelled and the guests could not come to us, we decided to go to them. A small group took the gang show to our care homes and performed from the safety of the car park. In a depressing year, the show helped to rekindle some past memories and brought some cheer to our senior citizens.

As a Branch we were recognised with a National RBL ‘Covid Response’ award.

We also gave out an award of our own to a young lady who went above and beyond during the lockdown with her own VE 75 challenge. She initially set out to raise £75, but went way beyond that and raise a fantastic £430 by; cycling 750km, shooting 750 netballs, walking 140,000 steps and baking & delivering over 90 cakes to the community including to several of our older veterans.

The Branch are delighted to award Natalie Condon with a certificate of appreciation for her outstanding contribution. Well done Natalie, we are proud of your amazing achievement and grateful for your support.

As we are all learning to live with the pandemic, please remember that our work goes on. We are still here to support service personnel, their families and veterans and we are also looking to add to our small but dedicated Branch committee and would particularly welcome any veterans.

Finally, this year is another year of anniversaries for us. We will mark the 100th of the RBL in May, The 100th of the dedication of the war memorial in June and our own Branch 100th in September. We will mark these occasions and planning is underway, although as we have all learned, flexibility is the key.

Well Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Budget Time It is that time of year when local councils of all levels must balance their finances and set their budgets for the forthcoming FY 2021/22. For councillors, this will mean making some tough decisions, unless they are in opposition of course. Due to the pandemic and lockdown measures, this year’s budget decision making will be no easier. Currently Suffolk’s financial position is stable, but during 2020 there was a reduction in its income and an increase above the planned annual expenditure. Even though reserves have been dipped into, SCC’s financial position remains stronger than other similar sized authorities.

Since 2010 SCC has had to make in the region of £300m in savings from services, but now it is very difficult to identify where any additional savings can be made. The services provided are down to their bare-bones and there is no more fat to trim off. For this FY, the government has allowed councils to increase general council tax (CT) by up to 2% and raise up to an addition 3% specifically for the Adult Social Care (ASC) precept. A proportion of this latter part can be deferred over to 2022/23.

For 2021/22 Suffolk’s cabinet will recommend to council an overall CT increase of 3.99% (1.99% CT & 2% ASC). This will result in the 2021/22 Suffolk portion of CT for a Band D property being £1,397.16, an increase of £53.55. The ASC element of overall CT (£145.78) can only be used to fund Suffolk’s adult care services. This budget will be debated at February’s full SCC meeting. I had argued against tax rises, I always do, but without this increase this year, services would be cut. We would be at risk of losing one of our district’s Waste Recycling Centres and possibly our post-16 school travel assistance, which I had fought so strongly to preserve in 2018.

Of course, there are other elements to add to the total CT bill. Suffolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) intends to increase the Policing element by £15.00 for a Band D. Babergh has been allowed a greater than usual increase of £5.00 or 2.96% for a Band D. The district also intends to raise additional income by increasing the garden waste collection (Brown Bin) by £2.50.

Babergh is also considering increasing car parking charges and reducing the free parking time in Hadleigh’s car parks to 30-minutes. I am opposed to these BDC car parks proposals for many reasons. To put it concisely, the report was: badly communicated to us and is stuffed with management jargon; it lacks any data that has been referred to; and has not involved the town in any consultation. The 30-minute free parking, if passed, will no doubt encourage motorists to find on-street parking instead, resulting in increased traffic congestion and pollution on the High Street. And why now? I believe it will be incredibly damaging to the High Street’s retailers at a time when the global pandemic has had a massive impact on their footfall and revenue.

At the height of the first Covid peak during last spring’s first ‘stay at home’ national lockdown, the prospect of a vaccine that might actually provide a solution seemed an almost impossible fantasy. As I write this, around four million Britons have been vaccinated, a figure that will change rapidly in real time throughout the month that this edition of Community News covers. Yes, there have been and will continue to be many technical challenges with the rollout of the vaccine. Inevitably, there will be variance between different areas according to the number of people inoculated etc Nevertheless, we have to recognise that – whatever the detail; whatever our respective individual experiences – we are in the middle of a profoundly positive moment in what is truly the fightback against the Coronavirus pandemic. When I visited a vaccine hub for the first time, at East Bergholt on a very busy Friday in mid-January, I truly felt like I was witnessing the best thing to have happened to our country for months – hope, made flesh. In addition to East Bergholt, the South Suffolk constituency also has hubs in Hadleigh, Great Cornard and Lavenham. Moreover, most patients from the Shotley Peninsula and Pinewood will be sent to the Trinity Park hub, and touch wood there will be mass vaccination hubs at Colchester United and Gainsborough sports’ hall opened before the next edition of Community News is on your shelves.

I pay tribute to the clinicians; porters; delivery drivers; car park volunteers and all persons participating in this herculean effort to jab our people against the Covid foe. They are making us proud as well as safe. Of course, we must remain vigilant to the pandemic as it inevitably mutates in the face of our attempts to thwart it. We must continue to follow all the rules on social distancing and so on for as long as it is necessary, even though for many of you these encumbrances will have become utterly tiresome. In short, we must continue the collective effort that is the only way to triumph, led by our brilliant NHS professionals.

Despite lockdown members have been able to compete in Area Competitions virtually and I am delighted to tell you that Sarah Chisnall was a successful winner with her Christmas door wreath shown here. Well done Sarah, you have put Hadleigh on the map, you are very talented.

Depending when the current situation improves we hope to start meetings again in June, but of course we will keep the members informed, please feel free to contact any of the committee.

Christmas Collections: Sadly due to the pandemic these did not take place for Health and Safety reasons but the Club was allowed an unmanned bucket collection at Morrisons with buckets placed at the end of the tills. The Club also set up a Just Giving account with only limited success. The sum total of both initiatives was £145 which Club members have made up to about £600 with donations. Everyone in Hadleigh has always been very generous and the collections usually total £1800 - £2000 but this year due to the extraordinary circumstances the target was £1000. The JustGiving site remains open for a further month in the hope that some of you who always give generously will use this to help us reach the target and enable the Club to donate to local Charities as we have for the past 40 years. Rotary Christmas Toy Initiative: This scheme was administered nationwide

by Rotary Kids Out organisation which exists to provide a free day out to deprived children usually to a Zoo or Amusement Park but as this was not possible last summer it was decided to provide boxes of toys for children living in Women's Refuges where the families are experiencing difficult and unhappy times with toys and Christmas presents in short supply. This Club donated money to provide toy boxes to the Ipswich refuge.

Special General Meeting: This annual meeting to elect officers for the next Rotary Year was held by Zoom in January with about 50% members attending.

The new officers taking up their duties on 1st July will be: President - Ian Burne, Vice President - Richard Whiting, Secretary - Glenn Abbassi, Treasurer - David Stokes. As there has been little activity in the Club this year all current officers agreed to continue for a further year.

Future Activities: For the present meetings will continue by Zoom with normal meetings etc resuming as soon as it is allowed. Meanwhile fundraising is very limited and members are looking for innovative ways of doing this. If any one feels that they may be able to help or would like to know more about Rotary please contact us. Obviously we cannot offer much to prospective new members at the moment but if you are looking for some new activity to try this might be a good time to find out more. As a southerner and evacuee in WW2 to Wales and the Midlands I initially had some difficulty in conversing. Speaking distinctly and not quickly was the answer, later and most valuable, when working all over the UK and Ireland where I encountered numerous accents and dialects.

Since our various lock downs many conversations have been with those wearing masks. We all lip read to some extent but that is impossible over the telephone and when wearing a mask. Many people have some hearing loss and I have a degree of tinnitus. Let us hope that now and even after our present restrictions are over we may understand that our speech should be clear and concise and not fast thus avoiding repetition.

Dear Sir

It was sad to read Mr Young’s letter on the extension to the Cemetery, it being riddled with emotional misinformation and at best insulting to the previous Town Council and the current Town Council staff.

I attempt to correct some of his incorrect information.

As Hadleigh rate payers we are not ‘saddled with a liability of over £750,000 nor has the Town Council to raise an extra £30,000 a year, or if ‘failing to do so will deplete the reserves and the precept need to be increased’. The purchase of the land, the design and planning and all costs up to the ground works were budgeted and already paid for. The Loan of £500,000 to extend the cemetery has been taken out over a 25-year period at approx. £30,000 a year. The first two yearly repayments were built in and have been made out of existing budgets. The current cemetery for the years 2018, 2017 and 2016 produced a excess over expenditure of over £10,000 a year. If this trend continues, dependent on the number of interments, then the actual cost of the annual loan repayment is around £20,000. In addition, any increase in plot costs over the next 23 years should improve the situation even if the number of burials does not increase. The cemetery has been the only part of the Town Council’s responsibilities that showed a profit.

Whilst a small minority of the ‘Old Council’ were against the Cemetery extension and suggesting that in the future there will be better ways of disposing of bodies, the large majority of the council were well aware of their responsibilities as a Burial Authority. All of the staff had been trained by the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities, and the law / rules on Local Authority Cemeteries are quite rigid.

A Burial Authority is advised to assess its future needs and, if the cemetery is in an area where new land is available, to start planning its extension ten years before it is required. This is exactly what the Old Town Council did and started the process of purchasing and planning for the cemetery extension. The extension is intended to provide normal burial plots, cremation plots and a section for the increasing requests for Green Burials. The planning application and new site provide for this.

The plans drawn up were quite clear as to which areas were anticipated to be used for which type of burial required, including a green burial area. The main decision still to be made is what type of green burial is intended, woodland burials taking up far more land the meadowland burials. Having run the cemetery perfectly successfully for 170 years the previous Town Council did not see the need of a “business plan” and, in any case, a Cemetery is run as a “service” and not a “business”. The staff were well able to inform the councillors and there was no need to pay for an ‘independent’ assessment of need.

At present residents requiring a ‘Green’ burial have to go outside of Hadleigh and the costs of a green burial plot seems to start from £900 depending on the burial ground. Local Authority Cemeteries offer a price for residents, which doubles for non residents. For non-Hadleigh residents at present a burial plot is £610 and for residents £305.

If the Old Town Council had a fault it is in not charging enough for burials, Hadleigh being among the cheapest cemeteries in the UK, but that is a fault that has been to the advantage of residents.

Why Mr Young suggested that the cemetery is handed over to Babergh leaves me amazed, after all at the 1974 re-organisation when Babergh was born, they chose what they wanted of Hadleigh Urban District Council’s possessions and did not want the cemetery. IF they want it now it could only be because they saw in it a financial gain Finally, to suggest that in giving the Cemetery to Babergh it would remove the burden on Hadleigh Town Council’s staff, I rather think that the only burden removed would be paying the member of staff that runs the cemetery in addition to her other roles.

Hadleigh has a beautiful, peaceful place for residents to visit and remember their loved ones. As a frequent visitor to the cemetery it is rare to go there and not see other people visiting. I for one expect to be interred amongst my family and friends, and if there is one thing of which we can all be quite assured, this or a similar facility, is something that we are all going to require.

A Useful Directory

The implications of the Covid restrictions and the recent high profile work of Prince William and others have done much to raise the awareness of mental health issues within the population. Not before time this challenging topic has been openly discussed and addressed. Sadly, the mental well-being of all ages can be threatened by lack of social contact, self-esteem and bleak future prospects.

However, the PPG decided to focus on the youngsters in our midst and investigate the resources available to them and their families should any such problems arise. The group compiled a comprehensive directory of all known organisations, both local and national, that can offer specialist help in a wide field of mental and physical health issues. The accuracy of the list has been meticulously checked and it is now readily available on line to all age groups. It was encouraging to discover that there are over 45 groups covering every aspect of youngsters’ wellbeing from eating disorders to bullying. We hope that the directory will provide a useful source of appropriate help for families, individuals and anyone working with young people in need of professional help.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club

Sometimes in the winter months we seem hardly to have any daylight hours at all, and on grey cloudy days it can feel even worse. Just before Christmas there was a lot of fog and some days there was frost and fog which stayed with us all day.

One morning everything in the the garden looked as if it had been sprayed with icing sugar, apparently there is a word for this phenomenon which is 'rime' and it happens more often when water freezes rapidly in cloud or fog. I went out for a closer look and found all along the front fence a series of cobwebs in a line one next to another, each one with a perfect circle in the centre, I don't know if they were all made by one spider or maybe a group working together, a bit like synchronised swimming! Finally on the back of the garden shed I came upon the little beauty that you can see in the photograph, the frozen water droplets looking like something from a chandelier, so maybe grey days have their moments too.

When we are lucky enough to have bright dry days then winter is the time to prune roses, grape vines and deciduous shrubs as well as autumn fruiting raspberries. This early in the year tips of bulbs begin to show and hellebores are one of the first flowers to appear in the garden in the winter, be sure to cut back any of last years leaves as new buds appear so that emerging flowers can be seen and to reduce the risk of disease. Although we can't get out to work in the garden as often this early in the year there is still plenty that we can be getting on with in preparation for the new season. Pots need to be scrubbed clean to prevent the spread of pests and diseases and plastic labels can be used again if they are cleaned with a little abrasive cleanser and a scourer, to help reduce the use of plastic old margarine tubs can be cleaned up and cut into strips, they do just as well. But best of all it's the time to sit down with a cuppa and a piece of cake and make plans for buying seeds and plants ready for the coming year. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 62 (February - March 2021)

With the virus Covid-19 currently keeping the streets of Hadleigh looking The Hadleigh Historian deserted, the story of a similar event in The Hadleigh Historian 1637 is told in ‘Consequences of plague Issue 62 February-March 2021 Price £4 in the 17th century’. The death of one victim in that particular outbreak was related in Issue 59 and now the whole parish is featured by looking at how the pestilence was thought to have been brought to Hadleigh and how the members of the borough corporation attempted to deal with the arising problems: the grammar school was closed; the unemployed were supported; isolation of the sick was catered for; orphaned pauper children were educated through apprenticeships.

Does this sound familiar?

Among the many books on my shelves are four memoirs recalling childhood in Hadleigh during the first half of the 20th century. For ‘Along the banks of the Brett’, three have been consulted to add interest to the collection of six postcards in this picture feature. They tell of boating between Hadleigh Mill in Bridge Street and Toppesfield Mill in Tinkers Lane but also of ‘the swimming place’ in Calais Street. This leisure facility with changing spaces and diving board on the river was no longer needed after 1970, when the swimming pool on Cock’s Meadow was constructed. Can you remember using the swimming place, where it was situated and when iy wad formerly closed?

‘Made in Hadleigh: Malt’ continues with the location of malthouses at the northern end of High Street and along Angel Street, making eight in all. None still exist and that having its site marked by Malting Terrace in Angel Street was the last to be demolished. Looking at a garden further down Angel Street, one would not guess that the site has a long history of industrial activity: pottery making then leather tanning during the 18th century and malting throughout the 19th century.

In the past, not all Hadleigh townsfolk made a will and not all wills have survived but for two men, their wills not only tell us about their circumstances but also where they lived. Together with entries from parish records, the lives and work of ‘Thomas Ward and John Miles: fellow churchwardens’ can be told showing that such men of authority in the town did not always abide by the rules and were eventually found out.

For the first time, The Hadleigh Historian has four pictures on its front cover.

They show a delivery push-cart, a funeral bier, an invalid carriage and a perambulator (pram), all of which are ‘No longer seen on the streets’.

A huge Clap for two very caring volunteers, Sarah and Simon Thompson, of The Christmas Present Trust

Not to be put off by the pandemic, they organised the whole event in a different way so those who could not be with family/friends on Christmas Day were able to enjoy a hot lunch plus mince pies, Christmas cake and goody bag, delivered by an army of volunteers.

Sarah and Simon were unable to have any help on Christmas Eve, due to covid restrictions. These two stalwarts prepared all the food, put up tables around the hall for serving and laying out containers for delivering the food, labelling bags for 90 recipients with individual choices of meal and a sanitising station at the entrance to the hall.

Such an amazing achievement – Well done Sarah and Simon!

Playstation Pre-School

So many playgroups are struggling at this time as numbers drop and income is reduced. We are really grateful to our parents who have been amazing with their support. Firstly, we would like to say a big thank you to Glen and Charlotte Rush from Rush Repairs (Telephone no. 07854897780) for donating the cushions for our cosy corner and book area. This area is now coming along nicely with help from our Christmas fundraising and we hope that the children enjoy the new resources. Secondly a huge thanks to all parents who have responded to our wish list and donated items such as tissues, wipes and craft resources. This has been a great help.

In Playstation, we have enjoyed exploring Winter with the children and have had lots of fun with sensory play, making snowy pictures and making food to feed the birds. We are moving onto traditional fairy tales and will be doing lots of work linked to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Gingerbread Man and Three Billy Goats Gruff over the coming weeks.

Babergh is also exploring ways to support our communities and businesses in Babergh over the difficult weeks ahead, in line with the package of new financial measures for individuals and businesses announced by the Chancellor (see separate article). The most important thing is that we all try to stay safe during this unprecedented time.

French’s Care Haven

Hello readers, with all the flooding and grim weather, let’s look on the bright side and think to ourselves, spring is on its way. After months of rain, wind and more rain our fields are struggling to see any type of normality, this job is even harder when on clay soil, as we are.

Today I would like to talk about a young lad called Lewis, Lewis has been with us for 4 years now and he has Global development delay. This does not stop him in any way doing a great job, on any of the tasks he is given, or working as part of our team. Lewis loves being with Lucy our therapy dog (pictured) and he is very good at manual jobs, which is something he enjoys doing.

His mother gives French’s a donation each month for our animals on our Care Farm and for the work we do with Lewis, which has helped him to develop and gain confidence over the last 4 years. For us it is not hard to keep a distance while working in the fields, as everyone is given individual jobs to do and when you are working in the 25 acres, there is some serious distance between us all.

The other photo is our donkeys taking cover from the snow in one of their 2 shelters, they are not silly, bless them.

Now for my thank-you’s, to: Pets at Home for their wonderful Christmas donation and for the pallets of small animal feed, which was very much appreciated. I have donated some of the food to other small local charities, one being a Guinea pig rescue and another which is a Hedgehog rescue.

I am in the process of donating to a cat and a dog rescue as well, so I will give news of who they all are in the next issue. We put regular up-dates on our facebook page and this will say who has been given help from French’s Care Haven.

I know how hard it is to be an animal rescue, trying to raise funds on top of all the worry, time and energy it takes to care for the animals, so as an animal lover, when I am given opportunities like this, I am only too happy to help other Charities.

A big thank you must also go out to Boxford and Groton Charities for their grant of £500, this money paid one of our bills. Now we need to raise a further £1,750 for last month’s hay and haylage delivery. I would like to say thank you to some of our helpers, Colin who was made redundant from his job of 20 years and to David who is semi-retired from his daily job, both come to help once or twice a week, along with Dr John Flather, John has been such a huge support to me up the farm.

All three of these helpers are not afraid to get wet and muddy lugging around big bales of hay, repairing broken fencing, or doing general fixing and heavy duty jobs. On our ladies side a big thank you must go out to Jasmine and June for their help, both ladies do a great job.

St. Andrew’s – your parish church It is with regret that we have closed St Andrew’s Church for both public worship and private prayer. We are still posting our service resources on the St Mary’s Hadleigh and Hadleigh Noticeboard Facebook pages, and an email is currently being sent to over 100 recipients. We very much hope to change this pattern in the next month but we are balancing the spiritual needs of the community with safety and the protocols that have been offered to us by the Church of England and the Government. Our office is open each day for emails and phone calls, and St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh is available for private prayer from 12 to 3 pm each day. Fr Jo Delfgou, Rector of Hadleigh, Layham and Shelley, Dean of Bocking Layham Playgroup Well, that was not the start to 2021 we were expecting!

However, it was wonderful to see most of our children back in action after the Christmas holidays. We have busied ourselves by thinking about the cold weather and how we can look after ourselves and the wild life around us. The children really enjoyed making bird feeders, hanging them in the bushes next to the hall and then watching the birds coming to feed from them. It gave us a good opportunity to do some bird watching and identify different types of birds. If you would like to have a go at making your own bird feeders its quite simple… you will need some lard, bird seed and toilet rolls.

Mix the bird seed with the lard and then spread onto the toilet roll ready to hang up. We also read ‘Stick Man’ and then made our very own Stick men and ladies to take home with us. The same small group has run Layham Village Hall for years and years, and when things are going smoothly,nobody notices. However, as we told you last month, there is now a crisis as the key figures are leaving or retiring in April. Trevor and Sheila Roberts came across this bird attacking a pigeon on the ground. As they approached, it released the pigeon and took on the death pose. It remained completely still as they bent over it and took this picture.

Blacksmith’s Bench The local group that installed the picnic bench on Turner’s Hill (Stoke Road) have named it ‘Blacksmith’s Bench’, as it sits midway between Blacksmith’s House (the site of the village smithy) and Blacksmith’s Corner. It was great, one day in December, to happen upon walkers from Hadleigh who told us that they have a walking circuit starting in Hadleigh which frequently involves a rest and a drink at our village bench. They are very grateful to have such an attractive resting place.

Hadleigh and Bowza go World Wide

It's been a long time coming but at last the full 14 minute film of Hadleigh Hero dog Bowza being presented with his ‘World Hero Award’ Trophy, was shown in over 250 countries world wide on the 23rd of December 2020, just before Christmas.

The film shows Hadleigh and talks about the shops and listed buildings, it shows Bowza with the Ipswich football team and the presentation to Bowza and an interview with me, as Bowza can't talk human! It’s taken one and a half years to release the film but they had a back log and problems with editing staff owing to covid.

So Hadleigh and Bowza have been seen around the world including USA, Australia, India, China, Russia, France and many more and just maybe after the world gets back into a better place a few people may come to Hadleigh while on their holidays! I know that some of you may be fed up with the Hadleigh hero Bowza story as it's been going on a bit, but hey, it's a happy story...

JANUARY Cobblers a new wine-bar opens in the High Street. It is so named because the premises once was a boot repairer from at least 1888 until 1975 when it closed. Previously Cobblers was Frosts Estate Agents. The Emporium antiques and collectables, in George Street holds a closing sale.

FEBRUARY Abbotts estate agents in the High Street closes suddenly.

Business transferred to Ipswich. Aveda Double Take, a new Hair Salon is preparing to open in the Market Place.

MARCH Elishas nails and beauty shop opens at the former VC News in the High Street. The ladies clothes shop named Bea and Emm’s in the Market Place has a sign stating that it is to close. The Corvid 19, Coronavirus, is having its effects in the town. The Health Centre has notices stating do not enter if showing symptoms of fever or a cough. The touchscreen ‘check-in’ has been switched off to prevent cross contamination. The world-wide pandemic has become a main talking point among residents. Some meetings/events have been cancelled. W/C 15th, significant increases, just about all meetings and events now cancelled or postponed. Included are public worship in churches, also the Hadleigh Show. Panic buying at Morrison’s and the Co-op especially.

Loo rolls were the first item to have shortages. Andrews butchers had to close temporarily one afternoon to re-stock. The over 70s are being asked to isolate themselves. On the 18th announced that the schools will close until further notice from the 20th. Library closes for indefinite period. Some shops have closed until further notice. Government order to close cafes, restaurants, bars and public houses. (Take-aways allowed) APRIL The restrictions caused by the coronavirus continue throughout the month. Residents get use to queuing for provisions, and enjoy the free parking, although the public loos are closed. Stocks gradually improve but still big gaps in the supermarket shelves like cleaning items and tinned fruit. The Friday Hadleigh Market continues but with only three of four stalls being: fruit & vegetables, bread, fresh meat and fresh fish.

MAY VE Day. Many events had been planned but were cancelled or severely modified. At the High Street end of Angel Street there is a large mural for VE 75 on the building society wall. Hadleigh Gets Creative is a scheme for local art & craft items to be displayed in the shop windows of the closed premises.

The idea is to brighten up the High Street. The annual Hadleigh May Show cancelled. The children’s play area equipment use is banned due to the Covid19 pandemic. On the 15th, demolition work to the former Angel Court, home in Angel Street begins. The Pedal Shop (cycles) has moved from its High Street corner of Church Street premises, opposite, into the former Emporium (antiques & collectables) in George Street.

JUNE Molly’s convenience store in Long Bessels is being refurbished. BDC car-parking regulations re-imposed.

JULY The BDC toilets at Magdalen Road have re-opened. From the 4th more shops re-open and public houses, but all with social distancing. Restaurants take contact details, and pre-booking required. Some PHs and restaurants have been cooking meals for delivery/take away or to cook at home. Crabtrees coffee shop and bar in the High Street is not to re-open. The elaborate ventilator to the former pump house in Lady Lane, now KMR Engineering, has been replaced. St. Mary’s church opens again, but only from 12 noon to 2pm for private prayer. The volunteers of Hadleigh Cares, continues its good work for the community. At the end of the month a one-way system with a 20mph limit put in place along the High Street to ensure social distancing. This causes a major controversy in the town, especially among the businesses. Bunting, once used for the Year of the Sheep, has been draped along the barriers to improve its appearance.

AUGUST Services restart at St. Marys church, but no is singing permittd. A new jewellers shop, Hamptons, opens in the Market Place. (first shop on left) The controversial barriers erected by BDC to provide social distancing are removed. The Friday morning Market Place road closure will remain for the market. The new housing estate development off the Ipswich Road is now well underway. Boots the Chemist, adjacent to Pound Lane closes Molly’s convenience store at Long Bessels re-opens as a Spar store after a period of refurbishment.

SEPTEMBER Hall Street, the gent’s outfitters shop closes in the High Street.

A new swimming facility, to be named ‘Letts Swim’ is being built with modern materials on Ipswich Road at the now demolished ‘The Moorings’ site. The metal ventilator to the roof of KMR business has been restored and replaced.

The tiles also made good. Following a resignation, Frank Minns is the new town mayor. The weather has generally been favourable this summer. The grain harvest has resulted in very poor yields. The wooden footbridge over the river Brett has been closed.

OCTOBER The Labels to Love, a lady’s shop in the High Street opposite the Public Library closes, although an on-line service is to be offered. The Hadleigh Library is encased in scaffolding. It has been offering a limited service related to the Corvid-19 situation. Stuart Service runs the Virtual London Marathon on Sunday the 4th, being some 26 laps around Hadleigh, for the 25.2 miles raising funds for Evelina Hospital and the Bumblebee Children’s Charity. Start and finish at the former Babergh car park in Bridge Street. Over £6000 raised.

The recently vacated former Pedal Stop, corner of High street and Church Street, now has prominent signs in the windows stating to be opening as: The Fork – kitchen and deli. The closed Crabtrees in the High Street is to open as

The Flying Guardsman. The Health Centre has organised for the four Saturday’s of this month a Flu-jab session. Residents applicable sent a 15minute time slot to attend. On entering the centre, sanitise hands, temperature check, name verification and injection, all done in about one-minute! Insulation to the roof, and wall lime-washing to the upper room of the old vestry at St. Mary’s Church has been completed. The still, on-going Covid-19 situation, with all its implications is one of the main topics of conversation. Autumn colours are in their prime. The number of coronavirus cases in the county begins to rise, although Suffolk being amongst the lowest infection rates in the country. In the last week of the month there was a sudden rise in cases with Hadleigh reporting 28 cases.

NOVEMBER St. Mary’s Church office is being relocated to the base of the Deanery Tower. A second National Lockdown for one month commences on the 5th. Advice is to stay at home, essential food and medicinal shopping only.

Work from home if possible, schools to remain open. Cafes, restaurants and public houses to close, but they can do take-aways. No public worship but a church can be open for private prayer. On the 10th, the town has 45 cases of coronavirus, apparently all with the residents and staff at the Magdalen Road care home. The highest concentration in Suffolk. Announcement of a, seemingly successful vaccine, could be ready to deliver by end of the year.

The 12th brought concerning news. In addition to Magdalen Road Care Home, some 150 High School pupils are ‘self-isolating’ following four confirmed coronavirus cases in the school. There seems that there are other cases in the town. Some deaths have been recorded. There is shock in the town after feeling reasonably safe through the summer months. Babergh District Council issued a Special Covid Alert for the town – the first in South Suffolk. Frank Minns the town mayor calls for a redoubling of efforts among residents for conforming to Government guidance. The 15th, news is that coronavirus confirmed cases have doubled in a week; it’s now 93 cases. In addition to Magdalen House, Waterfield House care home now has cases and some deaths sadly reported. Sunday morning saw a heavy period of rain. Flooding in Bridge Street, and in places on the road to Bildeston by Kersey Mill. Police and NHS representatives were on Saturday at the Morrison’s Supermarket to offer advice during the Hadleigh Covid Alert Status.

Magdalen House care home railings are festooned with items of good wishes for the residents and keyworkers Relief in the town as official figures for the week shows 52 new confirmed coronavirus cases, halving from the previous weeks figure. The following week figures are 65 confirmed cases. When the current lockdown ends early next month, the county, and adjoining regions, are to be designated Tier 2. Previously it was in Tier 1, the lowest risk. Figures for the last week reveal 42 new cases of coronavirus in the town. There is to be extra testing in the care homes to help reduce the incidence rate.

DECEMBER On 2nd, the month long ‘lockdown’ came to an end, it is being replaced with Tier 2. Previously Suffolk was in Tier 1. Papillion a new gent’s shop opens at the former Abbotts estate agents in the High Street. The newly opened Turkish Barbers in the recently closed Boots chemists is named Istanbul Barbers.

Twenty-two new confirmed coronavirus cases, showing a further fall. There were, on the 4th, fifteen market stalls at the Friday market.

During the nigh there was steady rain, then about 8.30am it turned to snow which settled, giving about a one inch covering. The snow slowly thawed. More rain lunch time and the Environment Agency issued a flood warning for the River Brett from Lavenham to Higham. Saturday 5th, significant flooding as the Brett overflows onto the flood plain. Benton End: then the public park at Toppesfield Bridge, with Tinkers Lane flooded. At Corks Lane similar flooding.

Along Stone Street and towards Kersey Mill there was more flooding. Many people were at these locations using mobile phones to record the scenes.

A cake shop, named Erivica Cakes (E.V.) opens at the former Labels to Love premises. There were fifteen market stalls at the Friday (11th) market.

Three new coronavirus cases confirmed in the town. A fall from the peak in November, but there are still concerns in the county as confirmed cases rise.

A Christmas window shop display competition held. The annual Christmas tree has been positioned in the Market Place on the old water-mill stone roundel Small trees adorn most of the High Street shops. The first vulnerable Suffolk residents receive the new covid vaccine, but concern that a new strain of the virus has appeared. A stringent new covid-19 strain identified, results in the government imposing a new tier 4 and tight restrictions. Hadleigh remains in Tier 2, but for many Christmas plans and travel will be severely restricted.

Santa Claus visited Waterfield House Care Home, on his sleigh, and drawn by two decorated white horses at 6,30pm on Tuesday evening 22nd. Christmas Day The bells at St. Mary’s Church rang out for the 8am service. Officially a White Christmas as there were a few snow flakes during the night. Covid Tier 4 restrictions come into force on Boxing Day. A leak from BDC tells of proposals to introduce parking charges in the town carparks. Further spells of heavy rain cause waterlogged fields and large puddles on the roads.

31st December. As Covid cases and deaths continue to rise, there were the usual fireworks in the town to close 2020 and welcome in 2021. The church bells did not ring this year to welcome in the New Year – a further example of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

LOVE TO MOVE is a programme that has been developed by the British Gymnastics Foundation. It provides chair-based gymnastics but in a specific and unique way that has been proven to be particularly beneficial for people living with dementia. We at the ACC are very grateful to the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance (HDAA) for their agreement to fund Sue Taylor, our Memories Cafe co-ordinator, to train as a Love to Move facilitator. We can’t wait to get back to our Thursdays at the Ansell Centre so we can start our own “Love to Move” sessions.

In the meantime, we continue to keep in touch with our members and volunteers by delivering a weekly newsletter and a cake and having a chat on the doorstep. Sue has managed to produce a six-sided newsletter almost every week since March and she has been helped by contributions from lots of Cafe members and volunteers. It contains a wide variety of articles, mindful colouring designs, games, brain teasers and quizzes such as the following anagram puzzle which you might like to have a go at. Answers next month.

Hadleigh Community Primary School

During the current Covid lockdown, Keyworker children from across the whole school have been participating in P.E. lessons designed to develop their knowledge and understanding of different sports and games. From this, they have been acquiring and developing the skills required to take part in interclass year group festivals and tournaments. Much fun was had during these sessions.

Year 1 and 2 took part in multi-skill and dodgeball games. Year 3 and 4 participated in dodgeball tournaments. Year 5 and 6 enjoyed tennis and table tennis tournaments.

Orchard Barn News

With another lockdown upon us, our courses have had to stop (for now), but behind the scenes we are still busy. Whilst we work with wood using methods of construction which are hundreds of years old, this quiet time is the perfect opportunity for us to use modern technology to share with you what we do!

So, we are making short educational videos about Timber Framing and Basic Carpentry - techniques, use of traditional hand tools, and of course the reinstatement of the Longhouse project.

We are also planning to record some of the fascinating history of the Orchard Barn site. Before lockdown we created a Museum Area in the Barn to display many of the items found during the excavation of our 1580s Longhouse. We look forward to sharing some these finds with you in a series of videos focusing on these objects – from Victorian farming implements to more domestic items such as pottery and bottles.

Our videos can be viewed on our YouTube channel. The channel is called Orchard Barn Traditional Building. We also have a Facebook page called Orchard Barn Environmental Education and an Instagram feed called OrchardBarnOrg. On any of these three channels you can find out lots more about us and see photos and videos of our work.

When safe to do so, we plan to deliver a series of free practical workshops for families. It will focus on Gardening with Nature, building a wormery, composting, mini beast ID, starting a tree nursery and more. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice “I’m really worried about my elderly relatives being targeted by coronavirus scams - are there any warning signs that I can tell them to look out for? What should they do if they think that something is a scam?”

Unfortunately, we’ve seen an increase in scams since the beginning of the pandemic, so it’s good to be thinking about the steps you can take to help protect friends and family.

Common scams we’re seeing are about bogus testing kits, coronavirus vaccinations and government refunds or fines. You should watch out for messages about coronavirus from unusual email addresses or phone numbers and shouldn’t click on any links. Be aware that you won’t be asked to pay for coronavirus vaccinations - they are provided for free by the NHS. Here are some general warning signs to look out for: ● You suspect you’re not dealing with a real company – for example, if there’s no postal address ● You’ve been asked to transfer money quickly or to pay in an unusual way – for example, by iTunes vouchers or through a transfer service like MoneyGram or Western Union ● You’ve been asked to give away personal information like passwords or PINs ● You haven't had written confirmation of what's been agreed If you think something is a scam you should hang up the phone, close the website, or shut the front door. Never feel pressured to make a decision straight away, and don’t give out personal details or money unless you’re certain that they can trust the person. If you feel threatened or unsafe you can ring 999.
