Hadleigh Local Crafts and Produce Market St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh - First Friday Morning of Every Month There has been a Farmers’ Market in the stunning, landmark building of St Mary’s Church for several years now. Visitors are unanimous in their appraisal. Spectacular stain glass windows; a very warm welcome from the church community; the extraordinary sound of singing from the side chapel whilst coffee cups clink and giggles are shared. And as the sun streams through the windows lighting up the faces of customers and sellers alike, everyone agrees, our monthly market is one of the most enjoyable in Suffolk. We are going from strength to strength. In 2016, we are evolving, growing bigger and better. Now offering a wider choice, not just food and drink, but crafts and collectables of every conceivable variety, we are desperate for you all to come and see. If you are a crafter, or food producer, perhaps you would like to get involved? You could not ask for a better welcome and there are stalls to suit all tastes and ages. Quality is paramount, great value essential. We aim to give the people of Hadleigh the best. Your experience should be so satisfying you will want to return month after month! Hadleigh Local Crafts and Produce Market aims to give its visitors a shopping and community experience that is second to none.

We are so proud of our lovely, town. It’s still a genuine community with hardworking men, women and children who fight to keep our community spirit alive during some challenging times. Our new and improved market celebrates this, whilst welcoming everyone from near and far. You will see our new signs go up around the town a few days before our big day each month, and you will receive flyers through the post or reminders from Hadleigh Community News. We hope to get a mention from our friend, Lesley Dolphin on BBC Radio Suffolk. We mean to make our mark! So come and see us. Enjoy a coffee and bacon roll, or piece of cake in our delightful coffee zone. There are leather sofas for real comfort. Church pews are long gone to make space for real people in a genuine community. Browse our stalls. Take in the magnificent atmosphere. Feel you belong once again to the kind of community Suffolk is famous for. Howard on a steam engine Hello my Readers – as I scribe these words, the longest day has just gone and I feel sad that we can only look forward to days getting shorter and shorter. The recent celebrations of the Queen’s 90th Birthday have been magnificent and demonstrate a Britain to be proud of. The events reminded me of some visits I made to the Royal Cinema at Buckingham Palace when I was 17. My school was asked to provide volunteers to prepare some form of First Day Cover relating to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. It was organised by Mrs Gordon Spencer who ran the Scheme for girls. It was quite an experience. The picture shows me on a steam engine at Rural Pastimes at Euston Park. The coals were burning, steam was all about and whistles were a-blowing. The Estate is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Grafton not far from Thetford. The event was so interesting. There were hundreds of classic cars, there were steam engines, Cossacks on horseback and farm machinery. It was quite something to see steam engines on the move. A good friend had his seventieth Birthday lunch at The Flora Tea Rooms near the beach at Dunwich. The journey was further than my chauffeur Frank had expected but we did have an enjoyable time upon arrival. It does concern me that so many large housing developments are springing up and proposed in our immediate vicinity. I treasure our countryside and it seems that we are gradually ruining it. Hadleigh’s 8,000 population is expanding enormously. I was dismayed to receive a notice from Suffolk Highways that in connection with a new development behind the High Street in Hadleigh parking spaces outside Numbers 107 to 121 High Street are to be removed. These are spaces that Hadleigh needs so that you my dear readers can visit our businesses. Surely if a company is to profit from its housing development then it must provide replacement spaces. Do object to Suffolk Highways straight away at Phoenix House 3 Goddard Road Ipswich IP1 5NP or heather.miller@suffolk.gov.uk by 8 July. I have before expressed my surprise that people seem happy to sign up for leases for shops and the like without advice. A lease can contain onerous terms, such as obligations on the tenant to put a property in good order (no matter as to its condition at the outset) at the end of the term of the lease. Do take proper advice. If you are buying or selling a house or building it is worthwhile preparing in advance. Do come to us at an early stage so that you can marshall the necessary documents. A Lasting Power of Attorney is one of those things that you should have – quite a lot of paperwork but we can make short work of that for you. Howard Gibbons

Murder, most foul! If pre-meditated murder is murder of the most heinous sort, then HADS (Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society) will be hitting the headlines of The Sun and other red tops, with the slaughter on 1st & 2nd July of a local vicar. Who killed the Vicar? is the latest offering of this recently revived drama group. The plot involves a small community with big egos, a summer fete and shenanigans going under a leafy elm tree. Sounds familiar? The play has been adapted to be set in Hadleigh and challenges the audience to solve the murder mystery. Clues are liberally scattered throughout the night's performance and the Hadleigh Silver Dagger Award will go to the person who identifies the murderer, the accomplice and the motives leading to the dreadful stabbing. And don’t think going the second night means the cat is out of the bag, as two endings are going to be employed. Being performed in the Deanery Gardens, the unique backdrop compliments the storyline. To get in the mood, audience members can arrive before the performance and have a picnic in the Gardens - bring your cucumber sandwiches, tea will be available. Director, Patsy Forsyth, has gathered a strong cast to play the suspects: The Vicar’s housekeeper, the Organiist, the Curate, the PCC Chair, a Rambler, the Scoutmaster. We are also hoping to get a special guest to make a timely appearance. Who killed the Vicar? July 1st and 2nd at the Deanery Gardens in Hadleigh. Gates open 5.30 for picnics, Performances start at 7.30, Refreshment, licensed bar and side-stalls and a ripping murder! Tickets available from Keith Avis, High Street, Hadleigh - £5 each

Hadleigh Evening WI We were delighted to welcome so many visitors to our tent at the Hadleigh May show. It was a busy day. In addition to the stalls selling our homemade produce, Ann Porter managed the Tombola and Donita Gower a plant stall. We are sure to be back in 2017 so give us a look! Fellow member HM Queen celebrated her 90th Birthday. Our founder member Joan Rudman accompanied her daughter MEP Dr Julia Reid to a Buckingham Palace Garden Birthday Party. Locally four of our members made the cakes served at a party, given by local councillor Siane Dawson at Overbury House Layham. Local expert Sarah Cook gave a presentation on irises. The Suffolk West Federation presented a concert by soul jazz singing group the FlyRights. This was enjoyed by hundred members from the county, including a few from Hadleigh Evening. For both the singers and those in the audience dancing in the aisle to the music, it was an energetic performance. At the 2016 National WI meeting in Brighton, two resolutions were debated. The first concerned food waste. WI ladies had visited a branch of Tamar Energy, an anaerobic digester plant in Halstead. The process transforms organic waste into renewable energy and biofertiliser or compost. This produces low carbon, baseload energy for thousands of homes. The composting division recycles green and food waste into premium grade soil conditioner. The second resolution concerned the treatment in hospital of patients with dementia. Both were passed and will be a subject of a national WI campaign. At the June meeting Norfolk farmer Richard Wright gave a fascinating account of his family history in farming. He had been mainly concerned with rearing the pigs. During the war the farm prospered as country had to grow its own food. Mad cow disease, swine fever, foul pest and foot and mouth disease resulted in a downturn in their fortunes. Richard explained how they diversified. For 13 years they produced and sold decorative oil lamps. Recently they have been manufacturing carbon neutral packaging. The main constituent is popcorn made from maize which is grown on the form. A green alternative to oil based polystyrene. Our next meeting is on 19th July. The speaker will be Dave Smith on the subject of Crime Scene investigation. Hadleigh Evening WI usually meet at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in the Seminar suite above the Hadleigh Library. Visitors and new members are welcome. There will be no meeting in August. In September we will join Elmsett for a fashion show by Edinburgh Woollen Mill. For further details you are welcome to contact Philippa Carruthers Tel No 01473 823057 email phil.carruthers40@hotmail.co.uk

Nancy Muriel Allen Nancy passed away on 22nd May at West Suffolk Hospital after a short illness. Nancy, although had resided in Elmswell since 1987 was a Hadleigh girl at heart. I am sure many will remember Nancy at Allen’s Stores at 12 High Street Hadleigh before it closed in 1983, when she retired with her husband Cecil. Nancy will always be remembered by her smiling face and her friendly attitude. She is survived by Cecil who was her constant companion. They celebrated 63 years of marriage in March. Nancy will be greatly missed by all the family including her sons, grand children and great grand children. Julian & Claire Allen

Hadleigh Community Primary School Concert a Success! On Wednesday 25th May, children from Years 4, 5 & 6 displayed their musical talents by participating in the annual music concert. There were two performances to parents – one in the morning and the other in the evening. There were solo performances, violins, recorders, flutes, bell ringers a ukulele orchestra and many other delights for the audience as well as the contribution from our choir of 84 children! As usual, Mrs Broadbent had coordinated a fantastic programme and the concert was enjoyed by all. The event was made even more interesting by the presence of an Ofsted Inspector who watched the choir perform! Well done to everyone who was involved. Year 6 Play As I write, Year 6 are busily rehearsing for their performance of ‘Puss in Boots’. The play was written by the year group each class wrote one act – and it loosely resembles the original plot! We would like to congratulate the whole year group for working together as a team to produce a performance in very limited time; it shows what can be achieved when everyone works together! Sports Day After a delayed start because of torrential rain, our annual Sports Day was held on Thursday 16th June. Years 1, 2, 4 and 5 had their event in the morning – and had a fantastic time in the sunshine, with parents supporting them. The rest of the school (Reception, Years 3 and 6) participated in their obstacle, egg and spoon, skipping, three-legged, sprint and relay races in the afternoon. In addition to this, at the beginning of each section of Sports Day, all children and staff performed the school dance, ably prepared and taught by Mrs Cocks. ‘The Queen’ and some of her court visited (in the form of some School Council children), and introduced the whole event. All of the children tried extremely hard and enjoyed the event which had been fantastically coordinated by Mr Peters.

The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations On Sunday, the 12th of June, residents of Sarah Rand Road and Emma Girling Close, Hadleigh, came together and held a large picnic to celebrate the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. The weather threatened the event but the pleasant afternoon. All who light rain soon subsided to make for a very Her Majesty attended had an enjoyable time and wished a happy birthday. Thanks go to Rosemary Curtis, Kate Sands Faccini for all their and Christine efforts in making this event a reality. Vic Faccini

Luckily the Centre has a steady stream of people coming along to see what we do and they are always very interested in ME (and the other horses and ponies of course). Regular visitors are The Black Cat Club and branches of the W.I. The Trefoil Club visited in May, and is kindly sponsoring Bob this year. We have had Brownies, URC church groups, AMAzing Women, Stoke by Nayland Golf Club and many more interested parties. I love it. What Margaret and Jan do is explain our business. Lyn introduces the horses and ponies. Somebody will do a demo ride. Our curious pieces of tack get shown off. I get to show my paces and why I am so important. Our guests usually get tea and biscuits whilst they are here. This is all extra to the daily lessons for our regular riders but it does help to spread the word, and thankfully increases the donations that keep the therapy going. This month’s photos are of Hampden House boys who come on Thursday mornings to ride. They have to overcome all their hang-ups to get aboard; they have to listen to instructions and learn a new skill; they are not allowed to swear, and they have to say thank you. What good life skills for when they leave school! On wet days I get to teach them trotting and that’s a good laugh. The Thursday volunteers are proud to be supporting the school in their specialist care of theses lads. We all like to see them getting their grades and becoming competent riders. Readers, don’t forget to come to our Fun Dog Show on 9th July. It’s the last ‘Open’ event before the long summer holidays. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Six months of trading and business for Spice Takeaway is still hot, hot, hot! A Hadleigh business venture which opened just over six months ago is celebrating strong sales, a warm welcome and a growing interest from customers in hotter and newer items on their menu. Spice Takeaway is an Indian takeaway on Hadleigh High Street situated between Gregg’s and The George. Joint owner Nurul Amin, who had previously run a restaurant in the town for over 30 years, described “how great it is to be back cooking great food for local people”. We have been very pleased with how Spice is doing, moved by how kind the local community has been about our new venture and surprised by how keen many customers are to try out totally new dishes”. As well ensuring that popular recipes such as chicken tikka masala were available, Nurul was keen to introduce examples of regional south Asian cooking. Particularly popular examples of these newer items include kali mirch, a spicy Goan chicken dish, paka malwa, lamb in a sweet mango sauce and jaal Bangla naga, a fish recipe from Bangladesh. “It seems that these new items have really caught hold of people’s imaginations – and their tastebuds” added Nurul. Spice Takeaway continues to financially support the work of the Rosa Simon Music Fund, which was set up in 2014 to provide Suffolk children with musical opportunities.

Whatfield School had great fun celebrating the Queens 90th birthday with a street party, which meant sandwiches, nibbles, cakes and of course jam tarts to share. The children enjoyed a day of fun royal activities and were dressed appropriately in red, white and blue or as princes and princesses. We all enjoyed singing happy birthday to Her Majesty, and of course finished with a chorus of ‘God Save The Queen’. Our pupils all received souvenir coins for a keepsake of the occasion. The children also took part in a major exhibition at the cathedral in celebration of the Queen, and their work was exhibited during the month of June. Since their visit to African Adventure, our year 5 and 6 pupils have continued to study Africa, and were pleased to meet up with their friends at Bildeston to join in Kagera day, run by the discovery team at the Cathedral, and giving children the chance to find out more about the style of dress, food and daily life of people who live in Africa. I think staff from the Cathedral were surprised with how much the pupils already knew, and how enthusiastic they were to learn more! Whatfield School have been very involved with sport this summer. We were pleased to get a place at Quad-kids, and sent a mixed age team along to Ipswich to compete in this lovely occasion. The team were very impressed to meet Danny Crates, 800m Paralympian gold medal winner! We were also pleased to get through to the finals of the Westbourne min-tennis competition, and thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of playing at this level of the tournament. We are also looking forward to the Suffolk Finals of the gymnastics competition in Bury St Edmunds, and are to the challenge of competing against the best school gymnasts in Suffolk! We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Creative Company Creative Company is a new, informal art group for adult family carers living in and around Hadleigh. Carers are welcome to attend by themselves, or with the person from whom they care. A series of taster sessions have already taken place – and the response has been fantastic. As one person remarked – ‘I didn’t think I could do that, but it’s been brilliant – a lovely, relaxing way to spend an afternoon’. Now the regular, fortnightly sessions have started on Friday afternoons, from 2pm – 4pm, at the Pool and Leisure Centre in Hadleigh. Adult family carers can join at any time, as each week we explore a different idea and activity. Absolutely no experience is necessary, and all the materials are provided. Sessions are free to attend, and are led by a professional artist – so all you need to do is come along and enjoy a couple of hours of creative company. For more information about Creative Company, please call Candida on 01986 873955 or email candida@suffolkartlink.org.uk

Health Foods For You Relocation from Friars Street to North Street Health Foods for You the friendly independent shop in Sudbury is owned by Jane Pearson who has run the business for over 4 years. With many challenges in the industry and a young family Jane was determined to do her best to provide a much needed service in the community offering a range of quality products and supplements at competitive prices. Locally sourced, organic and vegan being her speciality. With her lease running out in May, Jane was waiting to secure a more central location as there was not enough footfall in Friars Street to keep the business going. Most of the larger premises in North Street being suitably placed become too expensive along with crippling business rates so Jane was unable to give her customers the commitment of a new location she felt the shop much needed. All of the regulars will know that things were desperate with the last day of trade approaching and still nowhere to go! Stock was run right down and customers were led to believe that the shop was in fact closing. I just kept saying to customers “watch this space” because I couldn’t believe that this was the end and I felt hopeful and remained positive that something would come up, I just didn’t know what! A week before closing an opportunity came up for a little shop in North Street next door to Sudbury Shoe repairs which Jane felt was the perfect location to move her business too. Jane acted quickly to secure the shop and is now open for business at her new location. You will find your familiar favourites along with many carefully selected new brands. Including Lamberts® the UK’s leading supplier of specialist dietary supplements to Practitioners and Pharmacists who use nutrition and herbs in healthcare. Offering an extensive product range including vitamins, minerals, herbs, multiple formulas, fish oil and glucosamine. Jane and her staff are undergoing extensive training to be able to offer advice and share knowledge. The shop will be open Mon to Thur 9 - 4; Friday 9 - 5.30 and Saturdays 9 - 4 You can contact the friendly team on 01787 828262 75 North Street, Sudbury, Suffolk. Parental Responsibility for Non-Parents Parental responsibility provides a parent with all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority for a child, as defined by the law. A mother will always have parental responsibility for her children and a father obtains parental responsibility by being married to the child’s mother or by being named on the child’s birth certificate, if they were born after 1st December 2003. Parental responsibility can also be obtained by adults who care for a child who is not biologically theirs. A common example of this is when a couple separate and the primary carer of the child marries another person. In this example, the new spouse will assume responsibilities associated with the child, for example duties pertaining to the child’s health and education. The school and GP will only have permission to speak to the new adult involved in the child’s life about their education and health, if they have parental responsibility. Parental responsibility can be acquired by an adult involved in a child’s life once they have married the child’s biological parent. Parental responsibility can be obtained by agreement of all the parties who already have parental responsibility for the child in question. This would usually be the child’s mother and father. If an agreement is reached, all parties involved will enter into a Parental Responsibility Agreement and the applicant will automatically attain parental responsibility from that point onwards. In other circumstances an agreement may not be sufficient and an application to the Court may be necessary. A relevant example would be if a child no longer has a surviving parent and a sibling or a relative is required to acquire parental responsibility in order to liaise with the child’s school and GP. If such an application is necessary, the applicant would initially need to apply for permission of the Court to make the application. Permission is necessary as the Court would need to decide whether the applicant is an appropriate adult in the child’s life and whether it is suitable for this person to make this application. If the Court grants permission for the application to proceed, it does not necessarily mean that the applicant will obtain a Parental Responsibility Order. The Court will need to assess the circumstances and make a decision based on what is in the child’s best interests. It is important to remember that if you are involved in caring for a child who is not biologically yours, you can only fulfil this role effectively if you have parental responsibility for that child. If you require advice or assistance in regard to a family related issue, please contact Daren Vythilingum on 01787 242824 or by email: darenvythilingum@bwblegal.com. Retiring Trustee Barbara Boyd, synonymous with the hugely popular Hadleigh Thrift Shop, is sadly retiring as a founder Trustee of the Porch Project. Chair of Trustees, James Buckle, presents her with flowers as a small token of our gratitude for her years of loyal service to The Porch Project. Barbara has said that despite standing down, both she, and the Thrift Shop, will continue to support the Porch Project in the future. Recently, Sir John Hall, Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees, another founder member, also retired. His wise counsel is missed. We are, however, extremely lucky to have four new Trustees on the Board who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise with them and we are so grateful to them for giving up their time to assist us. We would like to wish Barbara and Sir John good health and happiness and trust they will be able to devote more time to their other interests. We sincerely hope they will keep closely in touch with us. From us all at the Porch Project, a heartfelt thank you. Happy Retirement Janet! Hadleigh Community Pre-School have a Big Thankyou to say to Janet Webb our Manager who is retiring in July after 19yrs. East House was Janet’s first encounter with, what is now known as, Hadleigh Community Pre-School. This was a parent run playgroup and as Janet had a youngster at the time took the opportunity to work alongside Christine Mann and offer a fantastic service to the community of Hadleigh. When it was decided to close East House Janet moved with the playgroup to the Football Club in Millfield in the summer of 2006 and then again in 2008 took the playgroup to the Scout Hut in Hadleigh, where the space inside and out suited the children better. In 2010 the Pre-School had the opportunity to make the building in Pykenham Way their own and now after another 6 yrs Janet feels it is the right time to spend more time with her husband catching up with her reading and getting out in the garden as well as a little decorating! The Staff, Committee and everyone who has been associated with Janet over the years would like to thank her for her dedication to our Pre-School. We all wish her the best for the future and I am sure she is looking forward to swapping her paint splattered hands for Green Fingers! Our theme so far this term has been ‘Celebrations’ and the Children have enjoyed joining in with the Queens’ Birthday. After coming across the Queens Handbag the children have enjoyed finding out what she has in it and trying to remember the items during circle time, playing Kims Game! We still have places available in September and welcome children into our friendly and professional setting . Situated in a Park area we are a home from home environment offering learning through play activities children thriving in our setting and leaving school ready. We feed into all local schools in and around Hadleigh. We welcome children from 2yrs to 5yrs of age. Children of 3yrs are able to receive government funding and some 2yr olds which will meet a criteria, if you are interested pop along and see us or contact us on 01473 827702 or email office@hadleighcommunityplaygroup.co.uk

SKy Watch

Space Weather July is here and technically the nights are getting slightly longer thankfully. Still a bit to go until we can do some serious practical work, so I thought this month I'd talk about our most treasured topic; the weather. Now, being an astronomer I have to know the weather with great accuracy so that I can plan my observing schedule as well as others; I'm constantly assessing the situation for 10 days or more ahead and I can tell you now the paper headlines of "worst heatwave ever on way" and so on is basically rubbish. But this said, we moan about getting soaked popping down the High St to pick up a loaf of bread or pint of milk, but what is the weather like on other planets? We'll begin with the closest planet to ours in the Solar System; Venus. This planet is often referred to as our "twin", this is only really true when it comes to size everything else is far from similar and thankfully so as you'll see. Venus is cloaked in an choking atmosphere of carbon dioxide clouds that are so dense that the Sun never breaks through them to strike the surface these clouds have also a crushing atmospheric pressure and this traps all the heat that radiates down to the surface. Temperatures are in the range of 400 degrees Celsius and if you were on Venus your rain shower would not be of rain but of sulphuric acid. Not pleasant and not a place you'd like to take a picnic either. By stark contrast if we move farther out into the Solar System to encompass the gas giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn,Uranus and Neptune, the weather takes a rather strange turn when it comes to showers. These planets are colder and covered with Methane and carbon rich atmospheres they also, despite being so far from the Sun, have internal heat sources which creates weather on them, and very extreme weather it is too. Jupiter has had a huge hurricane storm blowing for at least 400 years, Saturn has immense thunderstorms and Neptune has the fastest recorded winds in the Solar System. But the rain, what would your fist guess be? Well, if you just said "Diamonds" you go to the top of the class. As hard as it is to believe, this what happens. To allow this we need the most essential ingredient ; lightning. The lightning literally fries the methane, which in turn creates hydrogen and burnt carbon (soot). This then clumps together to form graphite and as this falls towards the centre of the planets, the immense pressures compact the graphite to create diamonds. In fact, 1,000 tons of diamonds are made per year on these planets. The Gas Giants are truly "A Girls Best Friend "! Now, you think that's cool? Let's look at a couple of exo-planets that are orbiting stars that we've discovered. Firstly, the very catchy named HD189733B. This is a planet that orbits around a star in the constellation of Vulpecula which lies in our skies near Cygnus, Lyra and Hercules, some 63 light years away, so in stellar terms, a neighbour. Although we cannot physically see the planet we know it is there because we can detect the dimming of the host star. This is very much like for example like seeing a moth fly in front of a light bulb, you can physically see a dimming of light, well, this is how astronomers can detect these exo-planets. The amount of light blocked out gives us an indication of its size. HD189733B is classed as a "Hot Jupiter" because it orbits its star very closely and so is very hot, we also estimate the size of it as around 13% bigger than our Jupiter. Its temperature is around 1400 degrees Kelvin, is blue and also tidally locked to its Star, or in other words, it always presents the same face to its Sun, just as our Moon only shows one face to us. Above is an artists interpretation of what it looks like. But the weather? well, given the conditions it faces would you believe it rains glass and horizontally too due to its ultra fast orbital rotation. A highly treacherous situation I think you'll agree. And finally, we move to the orange planet above; OGLE-TR-56B. Now this little feller lies away in the constellation of Sagittarius and its colour may well give you a clue to the type of rain you'll get there, think of our beloved Mars. Yup, Iron! You couldn't make this stuff up right? The universe if a marvellous place, but next time you are cursing about the weather do please remember that it could be so very much worse than water that falls on us . Until next month, clear skies. Neil. Any questions please contact me at. neilnorman03@gmail.com.

The Chinese brought civilisation to the country in 1st century AD and the Kmer Dynasty ruled from 9th century until Thailand invaded in 15th century when Pnom Penh became the capital. In the18th century the Thais left destroying the capital as they went. They were followed by settlers from Vietnam but more importantly French missionaries arrived in 1863 and soon the country became a French Protectorate and this continued, apart from Japanese occupation during 2nd World War, until 1955 when it became independent. In 1968 the Communists waged civil war against the Monarchy and it became a Kmer Republic when many atrocities were committed against the general population resulting in the death of a major proportion of the populace. After the Kmer Rouge was defeated by the Vietnamese the country began to recover slowly and the Monarchy was restored. Now the economy is improving with the main industries being textiles and tourism. Angor Wat, the major tourist attraction, was originally built as an earthly representation of the Universe as it was then known and covers an area of 5.5 sq. km. It was abandoned in the15th century and not rediscovered until 1860. It is now being slowly restored to its former grandeur. Ian also visited Dubai, Bangkok, Perth and Melbourne photographs We showing hope you will join of these places as well. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk There are not many subjects I would have expected to force me to abridge an article about the centenary of the Battle of the Somme at the last minute, but the brutal murder of a fellow Member of Parliament is one of them. Like me, Jo Cox was born in 1974; she was elected to the House of Commons on the same day that I earned the great privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament. Jo attended many of the same debates and statements as me, always displaying striking passion and intelligence; and I find it so painful to think that she will not be facing me across the green benches ever again. I have tried as best I can to pass on the messages of condolence I have received for her bereaved family from constituents. I am also grateful for the many messages of good wishes that I have been sent by so many of you, including supporters of all parties, and I can assure all of you that the surgeries advertised on the opposite page will continue; I will not be stopped from trying to serve South Suffolk to the best of my ability. Fear of violence must not triumph over democracy. On 1st July it will have been 100 years since the start of the Battle of the Somme, a day of unparalleled bloodshed in our army's history. I will be marking the centenary with the Sudbury branch of the Royal British Legion at their Commemoration Service on Market Hill on 3rd July. Parliament will hold a special debate on 29th June. We will commemorate the most epic sacrifice on behalf of this nation. In her own way, like those soldiers a century ago, Jo Cox died bravely serving her country. We must never forget either sacrifice.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Mum’s got babies all over the place. Kittens in the kitchen, fledglings over the fireplace, ducklings on the dining table, all demanding yet another feed. Just as they all settled down, a bunch of orphaned partridge chicks arrived. It’s enough to drive a chap quackers! Meanwhile the volunteers are preparing for the SESAW Open Day and Fun Dog Show, open midday on Sunday 31st July, 12-4pm. Four hours of family fun and entertainment on “the happiest day of our year” as my human friend Sandra once said. We hope lots of our rehomed canines will return to enter the special ex-SESAW dog class - or just to say hello. Other classes include Best Puppy, Golden Oldie, Waggiest Tail and Most Appealing Eyes For the people, there will be food, games, competitions, our Wildlife Guru George Millins, food, stalls selling pet items, gifts, books, BBQ, did I mention food? Old friends and new are welcome so enjoy the day, music from the Long Melford Silver Band and don’t forget to meet all the animals too. Free parking, 50p admission. Before our big day, the Shelley Centre, Layham Road, IP7 5QY, has kindly invited us to it’s Fun Dog Show on 9th July, starting at 11am. The next day, Sunday 10th, we will have a stall at the Long Melford Street Fair from 2-7pm. The organisers have lots of family entertainment planned. I’ll need a Kenmobile to chauffeur me through the crowds at our Open Day but I’ll steer clear of the Dog Show. HINTLESHAM & CHATTISHAM The Story of Two Suffolk Villages

For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish

This is the story of a pair of local villages forming one community. Written lovingly by two residents it is a work covering a period of 5,000 years. The contents have been gathered painstakingly from records and documents collected over years of extensive research and many interviews of residents past and present. Through 15 chapters it looks at the influences that have formed and determined the development of the villages including manors, landscape, agriculture, the church, wars and education. The work details the contribution made to local life and beyond by some of the more famous inhabitants and by many that are less well known. Published in hardback and consisting of 380 pages with nearly 500 photographs and illustrations, many in colour, this is surely one of the most complete records of village life covering one of the smaller rural communities. The book will be launched at The Hintlesham Community Hall over the weekend 9th-10th July, 10-5 both days, at a special introductory prices of £20. At this launch there will be a photo exhibition and refreshments will be available. If anyone would like a copy of the book but are unable to be at the launch please ring 01473 652359 or email r.d.chase@uwclub.net.

‘Do-it-yourself’ divorces: why going it alone can be a risky choice The emotional strain aside, divorce usually has significant financial implications for both parties – which makes the prospect of avoiding paying lawyers’ fees an attractive one. So-called ‘do-it-yourself’ on-line divorces have risen in popularity in recent years, fuelled largely by cuts to legal aid and a desire to quicken the process. However, for the vast majority of separations, going it alone is a very risky choice – and one which could cause you serious problems further down the line. In most cases, paying a little extra for a solicitor – who will probe deeper into your needs, both Jane Fowles present and future, to ensure that you are making the right decisions – is money very well spent. Even if you believe that your financial situation is relatively straightforward, failure to seek expert legal advice could have serious financial consequences years later. For instance, if you do not have a formal Financial Order drawn up and signed by both you and your ex-spouse and confirmed by the court, either one of you could make a claim on each other’s future earnings, long after the decree absolute was issued. That could mean that you are forever looking over your shoulder if, for example, you receive a financial windfall after your divorce. Issues surrounding child arrangements (custody), property and pensions can further complicate the matter – and increase the need for expert guidance. How can we help? I can meet you in any of our offices in Ipswich, Hadleigh, Woodbridge, Melton and Felixstowe, contact me on 01473 822102.

Pause for Thought When you read this it will be over – we'll be Brexited or Bremained. I admit, I was bored by day two of the campaigning. People we thought were friends, bickering like children. Claims and counter claims; nobody knew what to believe! Millions expected to vote and politics discussed everywhere! I'm glad my future is in God's hands. The Bible says '“I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord' (Jeremiah ch29 v11). What interested me was the voting registration. We were told the final date for registration, yet so many left it to the last minute the website crashed and the deadline was extended! People, thinking they had lost their right to vote, getting a reprieve. The Bible says Jesus is coming back one day and no-one knows when it will happen. It says about Jesus 'I will come like a thief and you will not know at what time I will come to you.' (Revelation ch3 v3). Don't leave it until then to get to know Him, you might find the deadline has passed and you're too late. Many churches run courses such as Christianity Explored or Alpha, where you can find out who Jesus is. Why not get to know Him now? Pam Sanderson

The GEORGE HINTLESHAM

When my dad died, my mum was overwhelmed by all the letters she received and the forms to complete. She also needed to make many telephone calls – often to people who were not very understanding of her situation. Like many women of her generation, my mum had left legal and financial matters to my dad, so she found all this very confusing, especially at such a sad time. Fortunately, I was able to act on her behalf, and she often said “I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here to help. I realised there must be many others in this situation who might not have family members able to help them out. I have 20 years’ experience of supporting people in crisis in different roles, plus excellent administrative skills. So I decided to set myself up as a ‘Bereavement Administrator’ – someone who comes into your home to help you with all the paperwork and phone calls you need to deal with when someone has died. There are also people with physical or mental health problems that prevent them managing their ongoing affairs. Some people are phobic about opening letters or making phone calls, for instance. As well as communicating with organisations like insurers, pension providers, solicitors, banks and building societies, I can accompany clients to appointments to act as their advocate. Each situation is different, so first I meet the client (perhaps with family and friends) to discuss what they need. Then we agree a straightforward way of dealing with things together. If you’d like to find out more, please give me a call or send an email. Or you can find out more about me on my website. I’m based near Hadleigh. Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan Update ‘We love Hadleigh!’ seems to be the message that the Neighbourhood Plan working group keeps hearing as it collects more evidence from residents and businesses. That sentiment was demonstrated by the huge success of the Year of the Sheep. But it’s not all perfect here and several issues have emerged from our consultations – parking, not enough affordable housing, no Saturday market, what about East House? We were very pleased with the responses and many constructive comments we received from those who attended the Annual Town Meeting. We have also been working with a group of Hadleigh High School students who are keen to be involved in contributing to the Neighbourhood Plan. We would still like to hear from you, particularly if you have any suggestions for specific projects that you would like to see within the town. Hadleigh will continue to grow and develop, so how can we make the town more attractive, enjoyable and distinctive? Our new website will soon be up and running, so you can learn more at www.hadleighneighbourhoodplan.org.uk Also, we will be ‘popping up’ around the town at the end of July/beginning of August, so do come and give us your ideas for shaping Hadleigh’s future.

Quite a small group came on June’s walk at Stoke by Nayland. We were slightly worried that the need to travel by car reduced the numbers, but on investigation it looks like we are at that time of the year when every village has it’s fete, open gardens etc. Our July walk on Saturday 9th starts in Hadleigh and will take in the Railway Walk to the first mile mark then bear off right to Raydon Great Wood, Raydon, Shelley, Lower Layham (Queens Head), Upper Layham then back to Hadleigh via Frog Lane and the Railway Walk. We will stop for refreshments at the Queens Head and make our individual ways back to Hadleigh from there. The walk is 10 miles in length and anyone not wishing to complete the full walk could arrange a pick up from the Queens Head (approx 7 miles). We will start at 0930 at the car park by St Mary’s School Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places, particularly Raydon Great Wood and its approaches which can be very muddy if there has been rain. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01473 823328 or 0785 895 5678.

Capel Canines - Doggy Daycare and Grooming

Good Quality Care at a Fair Price Residential, Dementia and Respite Care

Capel Canines is run by husband and wife, Michael and Marie. We live in Capel St Mary with our four dogs and horses. Marie is qualified in Dog Grooming as well as Canine Behaviour and Management. Michael used to work his springer spaniels and has completed training with gun dogs. He is also a qualified Paramedic. Both are qualified in Canine First Aid. The business was started in 2008. We started offering dog grooming and kennelling at our home in Capel St Mary. As business started to increase, we moved into mobile dog grooming. We used a converted van and trailer to groom our customers dogs outside their home. In 2012 we acquired a business unit on the farm where we live and converted this into our current Dog Grooming Parlour. 2016 brings new opportunities. Demand for our grooming service has increased to the point where we have needed to employ further members of staff. We opened our new Doggy Daycare Centre on the 1st June, which provides an open and exciting experience for your dog in a fully supervised and structured environment. Our philosophy is to be a home from home. We aim to provide an environment in which your dog feels happy and content. We also want you to be secure in the knowledge that whilst with us, your dog is safe and well cared for. Everyone (whether they have 4 legs or 2), is part of our family. Many of us have jobs that require hours of sitting, whether it is at a desk or in the car. When we get up it is usually a case of a few steps before our low backs feel loose enough to move, but it is temporary. However, there are a small proportion of people who get up and that nagging pain in the butt will not subside. In the worst cases it can lead to pain down the leg and suddenly the label “Sciatica" appears! This pain in the backside is usually a localised muscle spasm, caused by the muscles being asked to hold us in a maintained position for too long. Essentially the muscle has been over worked, and has remained in a contracted state. These early symptoms are potentially a warning sign, and alteration of posture or life style can help this. Here at Backs for The Future we can show you, how you should sit at work, How you should adapt the seat in the car, but also help you improve your core stability so that the work load of helping us sit upright is distributed more evenly and it’s not just one muscle hanging on in there! If you have any of these symptoms give us a call for a chat, or a free 15 minute consultation to see whether Osteopathy can help you! Please Ring Lucinda on 07818 420029 or 01473 820123 Next month the new premises will be unveiled, as we take a step into the future!

News from St Mary’s Primary School The months continue to fly by at St Mary’s! We can’t believe that we are almost at the end of another academic year! The Queen’s Birthday The Queen would have been delighted with the birthday celebrations held at St Mary’s! The children had a very busy day, designing party hats and preparing for our ‘street party’. Across the school, we had an ‘everybody writes’ day, in which all the children produced excellent writing on the theme of the Queen. The outstanding writing included a greta variety of texts, such as letters to the Queen, newspaper reports, biographies and work inspired by the book, ‘The Queen’s Knickers’! After school, lots of parents came in to see the children’s work displayed in the hall. Modern Foreign Languages Thank you to everyone at Hadleigh High School who organised a fantastic Modern Foreign Languages day. The children from Rowan Class thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learned a lot! It was a very busy day, which started with a focus on the European football championships. The children studied world maps and discovered a variety of Frenchspeaking countries. After this, the children designed their own passports in French. There was a link to history, with some work on the Normans and French words that we have adopted into the English language over the years. In the afternoon, the children decorated flags, baked French cakes and roleplayed buying goods from market stalls. The day finished with a structured vocabulary lesson. It was a really successful opportunity to learn French and work with children from other schools. Thanks to all involved! Book Express Club We are really proud of the children from Book Express Club! Earlier in the year, a large group of children decided to give up their free time to create a writing club, in which they would write story books and poetry books to appeal to younger children. Over the last few months, they have been busily creating and preparing books to be sold. As well as being a creative writing club, this was a business venture – the children have now spent two afternoons after school selling their books to make money for an end-of-year party! Thanks to the children for their creativity, initiative, sense of responsibility and enterprise! Pipers Vale Gymnastics The children in the Early Years Foundation Stage had a wonderful time at Pipers Vale Gymnastics Centre. They used lots of exciting equipment, such as the trampoline, the rings and the high beams. They were particularly enthusiastic about jumping in the foam pit. It was a great opportunity for the children to practise their movement and physical skills, especially balancing and jumping. The children were delighted when they also had the chance to visit the park next door! Hedingham Castle Oak class visited Hedingham Castle recently to support their topic work on castles. The children participated in a ‘Hands on the Past’ workshop, in which they learned about people who lived in the castle and the weapons used to defend the castle. Learning about music and dancing from the past was a highlight of the trip. Afterwards, the children wrote letters to the Queen to suggest that she should hold her birthday party at Hedingham! It was a lovely trip and the children really enjoyed the hands-on learning experiences.

Hadleigh Carpet Care now have three Woolsafe Approved Fibre Care Technicians to care for your carpets - Safely!

Hadleigh Carpet Care Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Services

RESIDENTIAL

END OF TENANCY

COMMERCIAL

Providing safe and effective cleaning systems to all fibres and fabrics, ensuring a quality finish with lasting results We are delighted to announce that three of our experienced technicians have qualified to the high standards of Woolsafe for the safest, no risk cleaning and care for your carpets. Our company is proud to have the most amount of qualified Woolsafe Fibre care Technicians in the county. Have you ever questioned whether your carpets, rugs, or soft furnishings should be cleaned? Many do question it and they are normally persuaded with the answer no, it’s not worth it as they are never the same again. But the answer is YES!! They should be cleaned. But having the correct type of cleaning is the key factor to ensure the right results are achieved. A carpet cleaner is a carpet cleaner though? Right!! No, Wrong. We all believe that if something looks cleaner then it is cleaner but when we look into it a bit deeper, we find some interesting answers. The most popular fibre used in carpets in the UK are Wool. Wool is extremely good at hiding soil and responds extreme well to cleaning, however it is also extremely delicate. 95% of carpet cleaners in the UK are trained normally by American systems and process from where the industry started, but the carpets are mainly man made synthetics. When the trained carpet cleaners clean a wool fibre in the UK, it looks good until a few weeks later then starts to attract dirt quickly, feels course and gritty, spills become stains and the appearance is poor. Our Woolsafe approved technicians are trained and qualified to clean wool to the set British standards to ensure that the delicate fibres are not damaged in any way. The fibres will look deeper in colour, feel softer and last longer with this type of cleaning service without the risk of damage from cleaning it the same way as a manmade fibre that will certainly cause damage and determination. With the correct tailored cleaning processes, we can ensure that the fibres are maintained and cleaned to extend the life and keep the luxurious appearance that wool deserves. We not only clean and protect, but we offer a wide variety of specialist services too:Carpets • Upholstery • Soft Furnishing • Hard flooring Machine and Handmade rugs – see www.suffolkrugcare.co.uk for more info. St Mary’s Art Exhibition 2016 We welcomed even more visitors this year, many of whom commented on the high standard of the exhibits. The exhibition was opened by artist John Talman who has exhibited for many years. Financially it was a great success and we were able to pass on £3,000 to St Mary’s for general church expenses, £500 towards the piano fund and £500 to pay for a new lectern commissioned for the Lady (north) Chapel. These latter two donations we considered particularly appropriate as were monies raised from an art exhibition. Veteran visitors will know we introduced new boards three years ago for hanging exhibits and a further £250 has gone to purchase some more. At their shop in Hadleigh on the 16th June we presented Nikki Brown from St Elizabeth Hospice with a cheque for £935, the proceeds from the auction of the A5 stretched canvas pictures. A big thank you to the helpers, visitors and, of course, the exhibitors themselves.

Together Tuesday, supports people in Hadleigh to live well with dementia. The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance would like to invite all members of the Community to join us at this Free Together Tuesday session on Tuesday 16th August from 2pm to 4pm to enjoy our Strawberry Fair – ‘A Sense of Summer’ this musical and fun afternoon will include the chance to join in our washboard music session. Alongside this there will be refreshments available and it would not be a Strawberry Fair without there being plenty of strawberries to enjoy with a special strawberry dessert We hope you will join us for an enjoyable afternoon! Free tickets available from the Thrift Shop and Hadleigh Pool and Leisure – limited numbers available. Working to become a dementia friendly community. Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Key Stage 2 Kagera Day As part of our Africa topic the children learned about everyday life in Kagera, Tanzania. This was an exciting and busy day where they found out how and what children learn at Ngara Anglican Primary School in Kenya • The children enjoyed singing, dancing and processions • Preparing and tasting some African fruits • Wearing African clothing and learning ways of sending messages and talking in Swahili! It was a wonderful day and enjoyed by all of our younger children. Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday Celebrations On Friday 10 June the children at Bildeston School got into the party spirit. They came to school dressed in red, white and blue, many as princesses and princes. During the morning the children made crowns to wear at lunch time. At 12 noon the whole school sat down to a street party lunch comprising cucumber and ham sandwiches, vegetable sticks, sausages, scones and jam tarts, finishing off with a special birthday cake for her Majesty! Bee Class Forest Schools Week Our wonderful outdoor facilities meant that children in Bee Class could enjoy their very own Forest School week as well as utilising our outdoor classroom. They enjoyed a nature hunt, made their own mini beasts, threaded leaves and made their own shadow pictures. The children had a fantastic time. Kwik Cricket Tournament Children from year 5/6 were selected to represent the school in a Kwik Cricket tournament held at Hadleigh Cricket Club which took place on Thursday 26 May. They played against teams from our pyramid of schools and came second overall. This means they gain a place in the county finals which are being held on 21 June 2016. Good luck Bildeston!!! Six a Side Football Tournament What a year we are having – two finals (Quick Sticks/Kwik Cricket) and on Saturday 11 June we took three teams to a six a side football tournament held at Elmsett Primary School. Police Visit The school was lucky enough to be visited by local police officers PC Diane Porter and PCSO Denise Ford to talk to the children about various aspect of personal safety. The two officers spoke to all the classes on a range of topics ranging from drugs and solvent abuse with the older children, to stranger danger and making a 999 call with the younger children. The children also enjoyed learning more about the role of a police officer and asked the two officers some very interesting questions about their roles and responsibilities. Mini Tennis and Cricket Members of years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been busy representing the school at the local primary schools’ Mini Tennis and Cricket tournaments. Held at Hadleigh Cricket ground the children really enjoyed playing the other primary schools in the Cricket tournament. They put into practice their over arm bowling that they had been trying really hard to refine. The team were delighted to come third overall after some very close, hard fought matches. The Mini Tennis tournament was held at Hadleigh High School and was run by the very able Junior Sport Leaders. The individuals in the team had mixed fortunes, but remained positive throughout and really enjoyed the whole experience. Parents’ Lunches It has been wonderful to see so many parents take the opportunity to visit the school and sample our wonderful school dinner menu on our ‘Parent Lunch’ days. Each class has the opportunity to invite their parents in at lunchtime, to eat with them and then experience part of the playtime afterwards. It’s great to see the children proudly giving their parents a guided tour of the school and then involving them in their playtime activities. Hadleigh Show The children at Beaumont always look forward to producing work to be exhibited at the Hadleigh Show, and this year was no exception! As always the standard of the work from the schools displaying in the education tent was extremely high. As well as the work we entered from Key Stage 1 and 2, the nursery class and our gardening club also entered work. There was a wildlife theme for all the work at the show this year. Key Stage 2 produced some beautiful collage work and model beetles and dragonflies. Key Stage 1 created some fantastic model butterflies, bees and beehives. Nursery produced a very imaginative owl babies mobile and gardening club some super toilet roll inspired owls! We were very happy to receive a second and third prize from the judges. Queen’s Birthday Lunch As a school we celebrated the Queen’s 90th Birthday in style – with our own street party and special picnic lunch. In the days leading up to the special lunch, the children had learnt, through work in class and in assemblies, about the varied duties of the Queen and the important significance of this year’s celebrations. Unfortunately the British weather stopped us celebrating outside as planned, but the children really enjoyed the special occasion nevertheless. Nursery Library Visit The Nursery children were very excited to visit Hadleigh library. The children were treated to a tour of the library and learnt all about the fun activities and resources it has to offer. They had a chance to look at the wide variety of children’s books and sat and listened attentively to a story read by one of the librarians. Many thanks to the staff at the library for looking after and accommodating the Nursery children so well. Retirement of Headteacher It is with a great deal of sadness that we have to announce the retirement of Beaumont’s headteacher Stella Burton. Miss Burton has been the headteacher at Beaumont for 13 years joining the school before the school building had even been finished. Miss Burton has led and guided the school from these early beginnings and has successfully created a school which has the happiness, care and welfare of the children who attend firmly at its heart. I’m sure all those parents, pupils and staff who have been fortunate enough to have been associated with the school will want to wish Stella all the best in the future. The school’s governing body has been successful in recruiting Mrs. Mayleen Atima as Miss Burton’s replacement. Mrs. Atima brings a wealth of primary school experience to the school and will be in post from September.

A little of your time can go a long way Do you have a little spare time to help make a big difference to wildlife? The RSPB Stour reserve team protect and look after over 100ha of nature reserves in Suffolk and North Essex ranging from the Ancient woodland of Wolves Wood near Ipswich, Cattawade Marsh a wader haven just outside Manningtree, Stour Wood near Wrabness and Flatford Wildlife Garden. The reserve team is made up of just five staff and a group of dedicated volunteers. Without this valuable gift of time from volunteers we would be unable to carry out much of the work on the reserves. RSPB volunteers come from all different walks of life with different skills and experience but between them they give hundreds of hours to help protect wildlife and connect people to nature. Got a few hours spare? Volunteers are needed to help patrol Wolves Wood, near Ipswich and Stour Woods, near Wrabness. It’s a great excuse to get out in to the countryside for a walk and directly help look after a couple of special reserves. Got a day or two free? Flatford Wildlife Garden has volunteering opportunities in the Visitor Welcome team . You’ll be inspiring visitors to give nature a home in their own gardens and to support the RSPBs work through membership and donations. If you fancy getting your hands dirty Flatford Wildlife Garden also has space in the Gardening volunteer team who keep the garden in top condition. Horticultural experience isn’t essential put you’ll need to be reasonably fit and mobile. Got some carpentry experience that you’re willing to share? We’ve got a well equipped workshop in Brantham and are currently looking for a skilled carpentry volunteer to help with tasks around the reserves from small maintenance jobs to big projects. Got time for a big commitment? A volunteer co-ordinator is needed to help expand and support the volunteer teams at the Stour Estuary reserves. Volunteers are hugely important to what we do and you’ll be at the heart of it. It’s a big job and a big time commitment but we’re sure the right person is out there somewhere. How do I get involved? Busy Trip to Bury! On Wednesday 8th June, some Year 7 and Year 9 students went to Bury St Edmunds for the day on a school trip. They spent the day learning about Saint Edmund, the Cathedral and the town’s history. Tom Johnston, a Year 9 student, said “It was very fun and interesting. I learnt a lot of new facts about Saint Edmund.” It was a great way for the Year 7 students to learn things and experience the local area. Primary School Sports Stars! A cricket tournament, hosted by Mr Hare and the Sport Prefects, was recently held at Hadleigh Cricket Club. Mr Hare said “I thought there was such a positive atmosphere and such a masterly climate! It was great to see such a large number of girls getting involved with the sport also.” Hadleigh Community’s ‘A Team’ won the tournament, closely followed by Bildeston who came second, and Beaumont who came third. It’s evident that there’s a bright future for Hadleigh Cricket Club with the great ability and talent seen from the children and we hope the strong bond between the high school, primary schools and cricket club will continue. Duke of Edinburgh Awards The Duke of Edinburgh Award is soon to be presented to the students of Hadleigh High School after their latest expedition. Year 10 students have recently completed their final expedition of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze reward scheme. One of this year’s students, James Tapp, explained to us his experience, “We had a two day walk to complete, roughly 13km each and planned out by ourselves. We had to complete each day’s hike with a 6 hour time limit, using maps and compasses as well.” He also explained that his group, group 7, had an unusual experience. Whilst completing their trek through the forest, they came across a child and a dog that had wandered away from their family. Earlier through the hike, they had been put on alert by the parents that they could not find their child. Therefore group 7 took on the responsibility and were able to safely return this child to the parents.

The EU Debate comes to Hadleigh High On Friday 10th June, Mr. Pryke and Mrs. Woolven ran a mock EU Referendum debate with eight Year 10 students. Lois Cooper, Laura Flockhart and Poppy Simmons argued for the UK to remain a part of the European Union while Joshua Gray, Lewis Quinn and Aidan Roberts argued for the UK to leave the EU. Becky Linge and Isabel Chaplin were responsible for time keeping. All students delivered their speeches superbly and were asked questions from the audience who were keen to challenge them! Mr Pryke said, “Many students are frustrated that they cannot vote on such an important matter. Debates like this allow them to voice their opinions.” Our audience voted for the UK to remain in the EU. Success at South Suffolk On Thursday 13th May, Hadleigh High students, accompanied by Mr Davy travelled to the South Suffolk Athletics Championships which was held at Northgate High School. They were competing alongside schools from South Suffolk, including St. Joseph’s and the Royal Hospital School. Mr Davy was very proud with the results: “We achieved great results considering we had younger students attend”. Students showed their talent, for example, Oliver Graham in Year 10 has been training at Ipswich Harriers with his Southern County Coach throughout the year to improve his throwing skills. He came 2nd in hammer throw, which has gained him a spot in the Eastern Counties Competition. Currently Oliver is training to represent himself at the English Schools’ Competition. He also 36

achieved 3rd in shot put and 3rd in discus. There was more success in javelin where Freya Dawson in Year 11 came 3rd, which was well deserved. Furthermore Caitlin Fosker, Joel Cooper and Ewan Baxter all ran extremely well in the 800m. Isla Romer-lee running the 200m came second in her heat and overall was 9th fastest in the competition; this is a great achievement considering she was one of the youngest competing against older years. Year 10 get to Work From Monday the 13th June to Friday 24th all Year 10 students participated in the Work Experience programme. For the duration of the event, Year 10s understood how it felt to be in a working environment. 150 students were working in a variety of occupations from schools and nurseries to offices and shops, many worked in the local areas, Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Sudbury. One student was working further away in London. Throughout their experience the students have to complete a report or booklet on their job, with prizes being awarded for exceptional work - the overall winner receiving the Bloomfield Cup. A great opportunity for the new Junior Sports Prefects The recently chosen Junior Sports Prefects have been given the opportunity to represent the school as Sports Leaders at one of the most prestigious Suffolk Primary Athletics events of the year. The young leaders will be trained firstly to officiate a selection of athletics events and then later on in the day they will be expected to run the event solely on their own, managing several primary school children from years 5 & 6, under supervision. It is a special year with the Olympic Games taking place at Rio in the summer, so the school’s sports partnership have invited Danny Crates, Gold Medal Paralympian to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity for our young sports leaders and it will give them a chance to develop their leadership and organisational skills. Saying goodbye to Year 11 Year 11 completed their journey through Hadleigh High with a leaver’s assembly, which was led by Miss Rowland (Head of Year 11) and Mrs Gibson. Mrs Wing thought of it as an emotional event, and told two members of the Community News team how Mrs Gibson and Miss Rowland had made it special for each and every student. Mrs Wing told us that Mrs Gibson had mentioned how proud she was of every Year 11 and all of their many achievements. Miss Rowland helped produce a slideshow containing all of their memories and trips throughout their school life; it contained the Ardeche trip from Year 9 and pictures and school photos from the day they joined (in year 7). To finish the assembly, each Year 11 student was presented with their Record of Achievement book, which contained a personal statement, a tutor statement and an attendance record; each one unique for each student. One of the now ex-pupils told the team that it was “Fairly emotional but at the same time funny”. The ex-pupil went on to say “The speech was well done – particularly the message that we should all follow our dreams and not give up.’” The two members of the news team then spoke to Mrs Woolven who shared her feelings about the assembly. She told them that there were lots of photographs: some very funny, others rather cringy! She said how they had the photos that dated all the way back to year 7, which did make some of the students squirm as they looked at the 5 year old photos. She said that during the assembly it could be seen that some of the now ex-pupils did look as though they were crying. She said this was because it was an emotional time not only for the students but also for the form tutors, because some of the tutors had helped these students from the day they joined (which would be 5 years now). Everybody agreed that the assembly went very well and was very emotional. The ex-students said their school life in Hadleigh has helped them prepare for their future and the assembly was a great send off to whatever will come for them next. Shakespeare Schools Festival is BACK! We are pleased to announce that Hadleigh High School is once again participating in Shakespeare Schools Festival. This is the largest drama youth festival in the world and this year we will be performing ‘Julius Caesar’ in November. We would like to thank the Rosa Simon Music Fund and Hadleigh Thrift Shop for their incredibly generous donations that have allowed us to participate this year.

The Battle of the Somme

St Mary’s C of E Primary School We invite you to visit our friendly, welcoming school to see how we develop children into successful learners and caring members of the community. Please contact the office to find out more about our school or arrange a visit. St Mary’s Church of England Primary School is a vibrant, Christian school, in which all children achieve well and are inspired to a lifelong love of learning!

In this article we remember: Harry Brown - 1 July 1916 Bertie George Bowers - 3 July 1916 Edwin Stanley Wright - 3 July 1916 George Frederick Ward - 7 July 1916 Benjamin Thomas Whymark - 15 July 1916 Nelson Farrant - 15 July 1916 Stanley William Gladwell - 20 July 1916 Frederick Michael Oxford - 23 July 1916 Charles James Chisnall - 26 July 1916 The most infamous battle in British military history began on 1 July 1916. The British suffered 60,000 casualties, including 19,240 killed on the first day alone. Lance Corporal Harry Brown was killed while serving with the 7th Bedfordshire as they attacked to the south of the battlefield. Henry ‘Harry’ George Brown was born in Ireland but moved to Hadleigh in 1896 where he attended the Bridge Street School. He later moved to Stevenage where he married and fathered three children. He died of gunshot wounds to the head and has no known grave. On 3 July the 7th Suffolks launched a pre-dawn attack to capture the village of Ovillers. They overrun the German front line trenches, but became involved in a tough fight for the second line. After five hours, with casualties mounting and ammunition running low they were forced to withdraw. They attacked again on 7 July which proved more successful. Three Hadleigh men were killed during this period. 2nd Lt Edwin Stanley Wright was born in Hadleigh in 1886 above what is now number 57 High Street (the Travel Stop) where his father ran a chemist shop. The family moved to Clare and in 1911 Edwin was an insurance clerk living in Middlesex. At the outbreak of war he joined the 28th Battalion London Regiment (Artist Rifles) but in October 1915 was commissioned into the 7th Suffolks. Private Bertie George Bowers was born in 1887 in Lavenham. His family moved to 99 Benton Street and Bertie worked as a farm labourer. Private George Frederick Ward was born in 1890 in a row of cottages known as Parker’s Terrace, which once stood at the Layham end of Benton Street. He worked as market gardener. He was injured in the neck and chest and died in hospital. By mid July, the British were fighting for Bazentin Ridge where three more Hadleigh men lost their lives. Private Benjamin Thomas Whymark was born in 1894 in George Street, the son of a bootmaker. He worked as a grocer’s errand boy. In December 1914 he enlisted with the 1/4th Suffolk territorials and was sent to France in April 1915. On 15 July 1916 his battalion was involved in severe fighting in front of the village of Bazentin-le-Petit where he fell. Private Nelson Farrant was born in 1894 in Haverhill. The family were involved in rope making and moved to Hadleigh in 1904 where they lived in Angel Street. He enlisted with the 6th Bedfords and arrived in France in July 1915. On 15 July 1916 the 6th Bedfords were a mile to the west of Bazentin, attempting to take possession of the village of Pozieres. He was injured and died of his wounds.

(as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day) Wed 5 July Thanks to the patriotic spirit, the Hadleigh Volunteers (Home Guard) have been provided with a shooting range at Benton End. Mr John Postans has not only granted the use of the ground covered by the range but has erected the butts and defrayed all expenses connected with the work.

Wed 12 July Privates P Wright, 36th Canadian Battalion, H Green and A Bloomfield, Essex Regiment, F Brown and J Bloomfield, 1/5th Suffolks and B (Robert) Bowers RFA have returned discharged through disabilities. This brings the number of discharged Hadleigh men up to eighteen. Wed 19 July Captain the Rev Ronald L Gardener [curate at St Mary’s church] went straight from Hadleigh to the Western Front. In a letter dated July 13th he says:- “As you will see from my address I am really out, in fact have got sent straight up, not being left at a base camp. Now I have to look after north country chaps who seem a descent lot. Quite a number of shells are flying about and at night one hears the machine guns tapping away”. (Gardner was attached to 1/5th Kings Own Royal Lancasters who were close to the Bazentin Ridge).

Private Stanley William Gladwell was born in 1893 in Angel Street. He enlisted with the Suffolk Regiment before the war and deployed to France in August 1914. After 2 years on the Western Front he lost his life on 20 July amid bitter fighting to take the village of Longueval and Delville Wood. The artillery had a crucial role during the battle and two local men were lost towards the end of July; Sergeant Frederick Michael Oxford was born in 1893 at Layham but moved to Red Hill where his father Alfred was in charge of the Crown Brick Works. Fred enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery before the war and in August 1914 was sent to France. He was one of six sons who joined the military. Whilst servicing his gun near Bazentin-le-Grand Wood, he was killed by a bullet through his heart, fired it was believed from an enemy aircraft. Charles James ‘Charlie’ Chisnall was born in Angel Square (a group of cottages where the former Angel Court now stands). He was a ‘factory hand’ who enlisted with the Artillery and went to France in July 1915. He was killed by enemy shelling near Mametz. He was initially buried close to where he fell, but was later moved to Danzig Alley British Cemetery where he lies today. More details on all those lost can be found on the project website www.hadleighww1.com. (Research by Mark Brennan, Nigel Crisp, Jeff Ward)

It is a deceptive story of two women in an intimate love relationship and is based on Patricia Highsmith's award winning novel from 1952. Carol is married and works in a New York department store where she meets Rooney Mara, a customer who frequents the store complete with fur coat, woollen hat and tartan scarf. She is attracted to Rooney in a way which is foreign to her but keeps her reserve as Mara reveals the inscrutable side of her character. As the relationship becomes full blown the main sufferer is Carol’s husband, who cannot bear the idea that his wife is slowly drifting away from him. The film carries a 15 cert. and is therefore restricted to patrons who are 15 years and over This is an exceptionally beautiful film in which the subject matter of lesbian love is treated with the utmost respect. Hadleigh and District Gardening Club One of the great things about our gardening club evenings is that there is always something new to learn – you might not take up every idea but there is often something to spark interest in following up. At our June meeting we enjoyed a lively talk by Lucy Redman who covered various garden art ideas. Lucy, a former pupil of Hadleigh High, until recently had opened her Bury St Edmunds garden to the public but is now studying art and design, bringing her keen interest in plants to her new craft. She used both pictures and sample plants to demonstrate her colourful ideas. Have you ever thought, once your alliums have dropped their flowers, to then spray-paint the seed heads that remain to prolong the colour in your garden from these spectacular structural plants? Lucy’s ideas were numerous and we were all impressed by one effort using pins and wire to trace out the veins of a gunnera leaf on a white background, especially when a light was shone on it. Simple but effective. Our next meeting – Monday July 11th For our next meeting we are bringing back an old favourite, a tour of selected members gardens. We start at 6.00pm and plan to reach our last garden by 8.00pm where refreshments will be served. Each member has details of the itinerary. If you are interested in coming along please contact us on 01473 824573. Andy Leeder - Chairman

Read my lips That famous saying by George Bush has a significant meaning for a large proportion of the population. Those who are hard of hearing try to do this subconsciously, but how much better it is to have professional help in this area. Help at hand for the hard of hearing in Hadleigh Hadleigh and district lip-reading class is looking for more recruits. Tutor, Sue Sue Monet, who runs the Monet, who also runs classes in Woodbridge, Felixstowe and Ipswich Hadleigh area lip-reading class where there is actually a waiting list – says for some reason numbers in the Hadleigh area have dwindled and there is a danger of the class closing down. “It’s a case of use it or lose it,” she says. People with even moderate hearing loss can benefit enormously from courses in lip-reading. The classes open up a whole range of confidence-building lifestyle skills, such as how to cope in difficult situations in restaurants, stations, and even supermarket check-outs, where background noise often tests even those with good hearing! “Many people think ‘I don’t need that yet’ – but sometimes feel inferior in social situations, even with the help of hearing aids. But after they have joined the class I have seen their confidence soar,” she says. The classes are not just for elderly people – people as young as 40 have benefited from Sue’s expertise. In addition to simple lip-reading, the course covers a raft of skills including how to deal with people on a face-to face basis, the phonetic alphabet, finger-spelling and which equipment to choose for phones, doorbells, etc. The Hadleigh and district lip-reading classes take place at the Ansell Centre, Market Place, between 10.15 am and 12.15 pm every Tuesday during term time. Despite these days of cut-backs, they are absolutely free, being run by Suffolk Hearing Advisory Service, part of a registered charity. And besides being great value – they are fun! Hadleigh has run popular lip-reading courses for people in the area for years – it would be a shame if they were to cease for lack of support. Those interested in joining should email Suzanne Monet on sfmonet28@gmail.com or text her mobile 07746576402. Alternatively, contact Suffolk Hearing Advisory Service suffolkinfo@hhas.org.uk

Down to Earth ...with Dave Having returned from a rather challenging week away on a narrowboat on the Grand Union canal based at Market Harborough - narrowboats are my other passion - it was rather a shock to find that we had to put the central heating back on when we arrived home. Still the garden and the allotment had survived well, with enough rain to keep everything growing. The first job was to catch up on the weeding and then to start thinning out the rows of parsnips, carrots, chard and spinach, with the spinach and chard thinnings used as lovely baby leaves, either to cook or to eat as salad leaves. It is just possible to fill in any gaps with some of the small plants that have been pulled up and if you are lucky, with plenty of watering, they may well survive the shock of being transplanted. The two rows of celeriac have been planted out, these are a cross between celery and turnip and not everyone’s favourite vegetable as they are a bit ugly and do need some extra care when growing. As the name suggests the flavour is very similar to celery. They can be left in the ground even over winter as neither flavour nor texture deteriorate with age. The runner beans, sown directly into the ground this year, are up and growing very well. It does make me wonder if it is really worth all the effort of growing the seed on in the greenhouse. The climbing French beans have not done so well, with very poor germination rate, but there is still time to sow some fresh seed directly into the ground. Back in the garden it should be safe to give the hedges a trim as any nesting birds should have flown. One trick I use is to cut the hedge with the electric trimmer and then pick up the trimmings with the rotary lawnmower, this is easier and makes for quicker composting down on the compost heap at the allotment. One bush that will not be cut just yet is the ceanothus or Californian lilac. I have never seen so many blue flowers on our hedge. The whole bush is alive with the buzzing of hundreds of bees, it would be very cruel to destroy this until the flowers have died back. June sees the start of the open garden season and kicks off with Hadleigh Hidden Gardens, with twenty eight places to visit, not all are actually gardens as the Bridge Street allotments were open to visitors as was the Guildhall and the Row Chapel in George Street. This tiny very old almshouse chapel is still in regular use with services every week and is well worth a visit if you get the chance. The allotment site boasts a very state of the art composting toilet, something we could do with up at Gallows Hill. I did manage to visit most of the gardens before the heavens opened up and put a damper on things. Such a variety of different gardens both large and small with lovely people to talk to about their ongoing project or their pride and joy. That’s all for this time, Dave

In attendance: Babergh District Councillor Campbell and one member of the Press TOWN MAYOR On the proposition of the Town Mayor, Councillor Whiting and seconded variously it was RESOLVED that Councillor Sheldrick be and he is hereby elected, Town Mayor to serve until the next Annual Meeting of the Council. At this point the Meeting was adjourned for a short period to enable the new Mayor to be robed and photographed. At the resumption, the newly installed Mayor, signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office Book and, on behalf of the Council, thanked Councillor Whiting for his work and efforts during his term of office and presented him with a past-mayors jewel. DEPUTY TOWN MAYOR On the proposition of the Town Mayor and seconded variously, it was RESOLVED that Councillor Free be, and is hereby elected, Deputy Town Mayor to serve until the next Annual Meeting of the Council and signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office Book. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors Wilson and Wiltshire who are on holiday and Monks due to personal reasons. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillor Cook declared a pecuniary interest in the Accounts for Payment as she is a payee and Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charity as she is Chair of this Charity. Councillor Byrne declared a non-pecuniary interest in Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charity as she is a Trustee of the Charity. REPORT OF OUTGOING TOWN MAYOR Councillor Whiting gave his final report for the year, which he requested be minuted in full:I shall begin my report this evening by thanking my Mayoress Mrs Maggie Solomon, the Deputy Mayor, Trevor Sheldrick, the Town Clerk, all the Hadleigh Town Council staff, plus all Councillors, for their help and support throughout the year whilst serving as Mayor of Hadleigh. It has been a great honour and privilege for me to represent you and the community of Hadleigh during the past 12 months. During my time in office, I have attended various engagements around the County on approximately 45 occasions, my first duty was to attend the Clopton Rose Service at the Long Melford Church. My Civic Service was held at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Sunday 20th September 2015 and it welcomed a host of Mayors from other towns, as well as many local dignitaries, clubs and organisations and of course local residents. The town has seen many successful events, including the Christmas Lighting Up, the Year of the Sheep, the Womens Cycling Tour, the new skate park opened and the new Cemetery extension is being progressed. We continue to see changes in both Police and Fire Brigade coverage around the area and the Benton Street situation has yet to be resolved. On a personal note, in view of this being the first year of a new Council I would like to make some observations which I feel will assist in the smoother running of the Council and is sound advice to the newer members of the Council. Once elected, we work both as a team and as equals representing all the Community. It is wise to use the Town Clerk and staff if you are confronted with a problem or have something that you are not sure of. Their advice is often invaluable. Never promise what you are unable to deliver. I am very pleased with our

She was advised that it had not been possible to find an address for Inspector Cracknell. It was agreed that a letter be sent to the Chief Constable to request more details and that this matter be brought up at the next Police meeting. Councillor Cook indicated that Felixstowe Town Council were also raising concerns regarding the way lost property is dealt with. Annual Town Meeting Councillor Cook requested the Clerk follow up contact with Suffolk County Council to ensure that all road markings and single/double yellow lines are repainted to the required standard. Councillor Young asked whether it was possible to view the written reports presented at the Annual Town Meeting. She was advised that these were available in the office. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 There were no questions raised. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £27,517.29 be approved for payment. REPORTS It was agreed that existing arrangements for County and District Councillors to provide written reports at Council Meetings would continue as it was felt that this was very useful. Regarding the Police report, the Town Clerk reported a letter from Suffolk Constabulary indicating that they would only attend one meeting annually. It was recommended that they be invited to attend the next Hadleigh Town Council meeting on 16th June 2016. It was hoped that communication between the Council and the Safer Neighbourhood Team would continue. The Clerk was asked to contact Mr. Passmore, the Police & Crime Commissioner to find out if an annual meeting to meet with him could be arranged. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 5th May 2016, a copy of which is included in the Minute Book, were noted. SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 12th May 2016, a copy of which is included in the Minute Book, was received and accepted including the following recommendations: i) that a lease be arranged between Shared Access and the Town Council either as an addendum to the existing lease or a complete new lease with HUFC to be coterminous with the lease period with Shared Access and to receive a copy of the technical report proving that this scheme is of benefit for the whole town. ii) to accept a quotation of £300 to assist in the location of the water supply at Layham Road Sports Ground iii) to accept a quotation of £3,450 to replace damaged fencing at the Tennis Courts iv) to increase the Cemetery and Layham Road Sports Grounds fees by 5%. EAST ANGLIAN DEVOLUTION Councillor Cook had requested this item as she felt it was probably one of the most important decisions of local government and was disappointed at the lack of information provided especially as a decision was due to be made on Friday 27th May 2016. District Councillor Campbell advised that Babergh District Councillors were due to be briefed on this issue on Tuesday 24th May. The Clerk was asked to write to Councillor Jennie Jenkins, Babergh District Council, and Colin Noble, Suffolk County Council advising that Hadleigh Town Council should like to be kept informed of decisions made. District Councillor Campbell was also asked to report Hadleigh Town Council’s interest in the Devolution to Babergh District Council.

TOWN MATTERS Councillor Shearly-Sanders presented a letter he had written regarding Benton Street to Councillor James Finch, Suffolk County Council, which he asked for Council’s approval to be sent. Approval was agreed and the Clerk was asked to send the letter. Councillor Cook reported that a letter had been submitted on behalf of Hadleigh Town Council regarding the proposed fire service cuts and would like it recorded that the second Sudbury Fire Engine would now be retained. Councillor Matthews informed the meeting that two firemen from France would be attending as part of the twinning exchange and would be giving a talk to local firemen. Councillor Fraser enquired as to what is happening with the East Bergholt Alliance and it was agreed that this item be included on the Agenda for the June meeting of Hadleigh Town Council. The Clerk presented a letter from a resident who had attended the last Steering Group Meeting in which he complained about comments made by another attendee and lack of funding provided by the Town Council. It was reported that no application had ever been made for a grant and that this must be submitted formally. Town Councillors who had attended the meeting reported that they felt there had been no reason for complaint and it was purely probing questions concerning expenditure, lack of constitution and tourism which were entitled to be raised. It was felt that perhaps the Group needed more support to establish a proper constitution and therefore recommended that the Town Clerk reply to advise that an official grant application be put in and when a proper constitution had been formed the Town Council would be happy to work with the Group and consider any requests made. There being no further business the meeting closed at 9.12pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk Report of the Meeting of the Planning Committee held on 2nd June 2016 Present: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haines, Haylock, Matthews, Monks, Shearly-Sanders, Whiting, Wilson, Wiltshire and Young. In attendance – two members of the public CHAIR OF PLANNING COMMITTEE Councillor Byrne nominated Councillor Angland as Chair and this was duly seconded by Councillor Cook and voting was unanimous. Councillor Angland signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office and took the Chair for the rest of the meeting. VICE CHAIR Councillor Byrne nominated Councillor Haines as Vice Chair and this was duly seconded by Councillor Shearly-Sanders and voting was unanimous. Councillor Haines signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office. FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE Councillor Byrne was elected as the Committee’s representative for the ensuing year. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies for absence had been received from Councillors Fraser, Sheldrick and Monks. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillor Shearly-Sanders declared a nonpecuniary interest in planning application B/16/00553 – Hadleigh United Football Club, Tinkers Lane as he lives near the Club. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 5th May 2016 was confirmed as a correct record and signed. MATTERS ARISING Minute No. 92 – Town and Country Planning B/16/00322 – Cross Maltings Folly, High Street. The Chair reported that there had been a site visit which she had attended on behalf of Hadleigh Town Council. The site visit was held after the Committee’s decision had been submitted. Councillor Byrne asked if the site visit had raised any issues which could result in the Committee reconsidering their decision but the Chair felt there were not. The site visit was also to consider the effect on listed buildings but the only listed building near the development is the War Memorial and the development will have no effect on that listed building at all. Matters Arising Councillor Cook reported that Christine Thurlow is based at Mid-Suffolk District Council and is responsible for infra-structure. Philip Isbell is dealing with planning matters. The Town Clerk had requested a meeting with Mr. Isbell but had been referred to Ben Elvin. Any Other Relevant Business Angel Court had been raised by the Town Clerk at a meeting with Mike Evans. Councillor Shearly-Sanders had raised a Freedom of Information Request which had confirmed that Babergh District Council has purchased Angel Court but no more information is known. There were concerns that the boarding which has been put around the building is higher than the permitted limit and no planning application had not been submitted. At this point the meeting was adjourned for a member of the public to speak on planning application B/16/00553 - Hadleigh United Football Club, Tinkers Lane TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee considered the applications for Planning Consent, details of which are listed below and upon which the following decisions were reached:B/16/00371 Plum Green, 82 High Street Application for Listed Building Consent – Retention of rebuilt chimney stack (following partial demolition of previous stack) Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/16/00523 Cross Farm House, Station Road, Construction of two storey ‘split level’ private residential dwelling, including integral garage parking and turning area (resubmission of application reference B/16/00152). Refusal was recommended (Voting was unanimous). The reasons made for refusal on application B/16/00152 still remain. The Committee consider the property to be over bearing to surrounding properties. The Clerk was asked to request the

District Councillors call this application in for a site visit. B/16/00553 Hadleigh United Football Club, Tinkers Lane. Erection of 5 no. 15m floodlighting columns and 1 no. 20m monopole to support floodlights at 15m high, 6 no. telecommunications antennas and 2 no. dishes with associated equipment cabinets situated at ground level. (Following removal of 4 no. existing 17.5m floodlighting columns). Approval was recommended (Voting was 7 for; 2 against and 2 abstentions). Approval was subject to an alternative position for the 20m monopole being investigated in order that it is less intrusive. B/16/00585 Valley Farm Cottage, Valley Farm Lane, Erection of cart lodge with first floor office space (following demolition of existing garage). This application did not need to be discussed as it had already been approved by Babergh District Council. B/16/00605 Compass Specialists Services, Unit 1, Hill Farm, Pond Hall Road, Hadleigh. Conversion of existing buildings to form 3 holiday lets and a guest house, including erection of kennel building, cycle store and related access, parking and landscaping. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/15/00822 Hadleigh Rugby Club, Layham Road Sports Ground, Layham Road, Hadleigh, Replacement of modular building, Refusal was recommended (Voting was 9 for and 2 abstentions). The reasons for refusal are: i) the building is larger than the existing so is not a like for like change ii) insufficient information about the septic tank iii) concerns over the water supply TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Chair reported that the pop ups are scheduled for July and August around the Town. Work on a website will be starting shortly. At the next meeting the draft layout will be worked on. Councillor Wiltshire is working with the High School. Councillor Young asked if the themes of the Plan had been agreed and was advised that they are: Housing, Open Spaces, Tourism, Heritage, High Street. An e.mail had been received from Nick Ward on Babergh District Council’s community engagement campaign, Building a Sustainable Future and providing dates on planned events in the District. The Clerk was asked to write to Nick Ward as Hadleigh is the second largest population in the Babergh District and there was no event organised in Hadleigh the nearest one is in Hintlesham. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Free reported the signage that had recently appeared on Molly’s at Long Bessels. The Clerk was asked to refer this to the Enforcement Officer to investigate. The Chair reported on the meeting she and the Town Clerk had had with Ben Elvin who they had found to be very helpful. Most of the outstanding issues had been dealt with apart from the Royal Bengal restaurant. They had advised him that no planning application had been raised for the change to the signage at the front of the property and the timescales for the removal of the garage at the rear of the property. The Clerk was asked to e.mail Simon Bailey asking if he would be reminding the owners that they had until the 14th July to remove the garage. They discussed the removal of the suffixes from the planning application documents and were advised that this had been done because the computer system could not deal with them. It was pointed out that these were extremely useful when dealing with applications and the IT department would be asked to investigate. It was reiterated that poor communication between the Council’s seemed to be the main issue and he provided a document showing the Duty Officer Service available (this has been provided to all Councillors). There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.45pm. Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh (and adjoining villages) Our first annual report appeared in last month's HCN and showed a steady and progressive start to our project. The next few months will be spent assessing how we can progress further by embracing a wider group of those in assistance of fuel need. We will be looking to assist all age groups incl. those disabled, whether they have support or not from other charitable sources. Therefore we are in the early stages of planning a fund raising grand Xmas prize draw. If there is anyone who has experience in this field and would be available to offer their services either voluntary or on a professional basis, we would be pleased to hear from them. LAYHAM COMMUNITY SUMMER LUNCH

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org, where you can download a Welcome Booklet. However, if you do not have a computer and printer and would prefer a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940.

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 18 May 2016 were: • Election of Chairman and Vice-Chairman It was agreed unanimously that Michael Woods be re-elected Chairman for 2016/17. Steve Laing was reelected Vice-Chairman. • District Council report A written report had been circulated prior to the meeting; the report was noted. • County Council report A written report had been circulated prior to the meeting; the report was noted. Councillor Jones said proposals for the future of the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service had gone to Cabinet on 17 May; there had been a number of amendments to the original consultation document. More rapid response vehicles could be used in the future if a pilot in Wrentham was successful. Four full-time personnel at Princes Street would be working 9am-5pm and would be deployed to supplement on-call stations around the county. • Training It was agreed to go ahead with some in-house training for the whole Council. It was also agreed that the Chairman should attend a grants workshop on 24 August at SALC. • Emergency Plan The draft Plan was in the process of being finalised. The refurbishment of the phone box in Upper Layham would be carried out as soon as possible, so that the defibrillator could be installed. • Notice boards It was agreed to erect a notice board at the Recycling Centre. • Babergh Alliance of Parish & Town Councils East Bergholt Parish Council, leading this initiative, had written to all parish councils in Babergh inviting them to join the Alliance. It was agreed to register Layham’s interest, but to await further information. Parish Council notice boards A big thank you to Bob Barbiaux who, having built a new notice board for the Parish Council, which was erected outside the Queen’s Head a year ago, has gone on to refurbish the two old boards. The first is at the top of Mill Lane and the second has recently been fixed to the fence surrounding the Recycling Site at the Brett Green entrance to the Playing Field. Bob reluctantly agreed to being photographed with that newly sited board. These three boards are the ‘official’ Parish Council notice boards – the glazed areas containing information from the council. It is here, for example, that information about meetings of the council is displayed. The unglazed part of the board is available for general village publicity. CPR Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation As the Parish Council works towards the provision of more defibrillators it is really important that as many people as possible in our community know how to give CPR to someone who suffers cardiac arrest. A set of dummies and a training film has been obtained from the British Heart Foundation which enables us to offer FREE BASIC TRAINING to members of our community. The first appeal in this magazine in March resulted in only three people showing interest – maybe the date and time were not convenient? We try a new approach – inviting you to register interest. When we have a group of names we will arrange a date and time to suit everyone. If you would like to improve your confidence in being able to give life-saving support to a member of the family or a neighbour please contact Jane Cryer, our Parish Clerk on 07920 713940. 44

They often fly at dusk when they can be quite frightening – but don’t worry they are more scared of you than you are of them! Please help with this important survey if you can. Pity you can’t hear this picture If you follow the footpath from Church Lane to Water House, then walk on towards Shelley you walk past land that is managed for a shoot. One of the great benefits of that management – to provide food and shelter for game birds – is that other birds benefit. Skylark The photograph of the meadow is unremarkable and is of tussocky grass and other plants that provide food and nesting sites for skylarks. It is a great delight to just stand and listen to the birds as they fly high above singing their heads off and thanking the landowner for providing such a valuable habitat.

Layham Playgroup CIO Come on summer… Where are you??? Despite the lack of sunshine we have been making the most of playing in the garden, playing with bubbles and taking orders in our playgroup café. Our caterpillars arrived safe and sound and they grew so quickly. We got creative designing some keyrings for Father’s Day and now getting excited about our upcoming trip to Jimmy’s Farm where we will be looking at farming and having a visit to the butterfly house. Our open day was a success and we are pleased to welcome some new faces to our playgroup family, but don’t despair, we still have places available for September. Layham Playgroup CIO is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Government funding is available for 3 year olds and in certain cases for some 2 year olds. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Our Toddler group takes place Wednesday mornings, 9.30-11.00am term time and is open to all children aged 0-5years. Parents are free to enjoy a hot drink (or cold) and a biscuit while their little ones let off steam joining in a variety of activities. Children also get to enjoy a small snack and cold drink during the morning.

Local Mayor visits Care Home as part of National Celebration Day Hadleigh Mayor Councillor, Trevor Sheldrick and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Yvonne Free visted a care home in Hadleigh to join in the home’s seaside themed special event. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor payed a call on Anchor’s Canterbury House on Gallows Hill, Hadleigh on Friday 17 June as part of national celebration Care Home Open Day. Manager Irene Worsdell said: “We were thrilled that the Mayor has shared in our fun-filled day complete with a ‘virtual’ beach, donkeys and Punch & Judy. We work so hard to provide top quality care at Canterbury House and want the older people living here to have fun and fulfilling lives.” Councillor Sheldrick found out more about Care Home Open Day, the theme for which this year was celebrating care as a career. He and the Deputy Mayor were given a tour of the home and met staff and residents to see how we improve the lives of older people. Suffolk MP James Cartlidge visited two of the other 5 Anchor care homes in Suffolk earlier in the day – Devonshire House in Cavendish and St Joseph’s in Sudbury. There was another reason for celebration as resident Mrs Betty Hawks celebrated her 90th birthday that day. She thoroughly being a ‘Queen for the Day’ sitting in a deckchair on the improvised beach sipping champagne! Care Home Open Day is an annual event run in thousands of care homes across the UK aimed at encouraging members of the public to see the quality care in their local care homes. Jo Bown, Community Partnership Manager, commented: “A career in care is hugely rewarding and offers lots of opportunities for personal development. There are also plenty of financial benefits. At Anchor, we believe in paying our people a salary that rewards their commitment and great customer service. That’s why our care staff are paid above the Government’s National Living Wage. “Unfortunately many jobseekers don’t realise this. There will be an estimated shortfall of 718,000 carers needed to meet the demands of the country’s ageing population by 2025 so we need more people to realise they can do well by doing good.” For more information on the day, contact Home Manager Irene Worsdell on 0800 0321304 Canterbury House, Gallows Hill, Hadleigh, Ipswich, IP7 6JQ

Flour mills required large areas to store cereals prior to milling, these areas are known as Bin Stores and are, in the case of Kersey Mill, located on the third floor just below the sack floor at the very top of the mill. Cereals would be lifted straight off the cart in 2cwt sacks, raised by the sack hoist that was powered by the waterwheel, through the Lucum, being the part of the mill that protrudes at the top of the mill on the front elevation. Once the grain, oats or beans etc. have arrived on the sack floor they would be emptied into shoots that lead down to the different storage areas. These Bin Stores would have ladders leading into them where the miller or apprentice as the case maybe could access the bin for operational, maintenance and cleaning purposes .Located within the floors of the Bin stores are further shoots with Blast Gates that can direct the contents to either the mill stones or various crushers and cleaning equipment located on the lower floors. These stores suffered incredible damage to the timbers from water damage resulting in the floors and joist rotting away in their entirety, so much so that we have been unable to gain access to these areas until know. The recent phase of restoration has concentrated on these areas and we now have safe access with new floors and carefully repositioned blast gates. The Bin Stores ordinarily had flat floors that would have required regular sweeping and moving of grain, the bin located within the far rear right-hand corner has been modified at some point with the insertion of a sloping floor, presumably to alleviate some of the issues with a flat floor and allow gravity to help with the process. Whilst working within these areas we have discovered quite a few inscriptions, some of drawings, poems and others that include dates, one reads “A Bumstead born at Bramford April 20th 1855 our research would suggest that this was Arthur Robert Bumstead. His parents were Henry Bumstead (18291904) and Pleasance Grimwade (1828-1898). Father was a shoe maker. Arthur married Catherine Emma Ranson who lived in Bildeston. Occupation recorded as a millers apprentice as was his brother Charles Henry Bumstead. He died January 4th 1913.

Others read â€?Harry Green Hadleigh 1872â€? Simon Green informs us that this is probably Harry T Green born March 3rd 1850, Simon has not said if he is related. An inscription that our farmer friends may find interesting is “Harvest began August 30th 1879 very lateâ€? We have not had sufficient time to decipher all the inscriptions yet many are very faded and the light is quite poor. If anyone is interested in trying to decipher others they are very welcome to come along. We have a few remaining tickets for the Summer Ball on Saturday 30th July. ÂŁ38 pp. Proceeds to the restoration fund.

A Big Thank You I would like to personally thank everyone who attended the charity fundraiser in aid of Breast Cancer Care which I held at the Hadleigh Town Hall on Saturday 23rd April 2016. I am pleased to advise that a total of £4,397 was raised on the night. I would also like to thank everyone who very kindly donated prizes for the raffle, I was overwhelmed by the community spirit and support given by the Hadleigh businesses. My thanks also goes to Allen Fulcher from Barclays Bank who very generously match funded the event, and to Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines who kindly donated a cruise prize for the charity auction. I would also like to pay tribute to a wonderful lady and dear family friend Margie O’Reilly (nee Shuttlewood) who passed away suddenly at the event. Our thoughts are with Margie’s family at this very difficult time. Laura Schwabe

THE OLYMPIC LEGACY? I am a 69 year old grandad with a 2 year old grandaughter, Katie. We enjoy a game of grandad chasing Katie and Katie chasing grandad, preferably on a flat field. We were recently, very politely, invited to remove ourselves from the Hadleigh High School playing field by somebody I assume is a P.E. teacher at the High School. I was advised that the High School leases the playing field from Suffolk County Council and that the High School has problems with members of the public making use of the field. Exactly what problems he anticipated from a 69 year old and a 2 year old playing a chasing game we did not discuss I note that the gates to the field are now padlocked, that an amount of soil has been deposited to prevent access via a side entrance gap in the hedge and that the other playing field actually located in the High School grounds has now been completely fenced off from Frog Hall Lane: I dread to think at what cost. I constantly walk Frog Hall Lane and know from experience that the two fields were regularly used by many lads and lasses kicking balls around. Presumably these kids will now have to resort to iPads and computer games to amuse themselves over the holidays. Is this an example of the Olympic Legacy to encourage sport we were all promised or will the restricted use be used as an excuse or justification of a future sale of the field? J.P. Gower

Dear Sir, I read with dismay all the matters referring to the police, published in the Community News June 2016. Firstly at the Town Council Meeting of April, the Clerk had received no police report and had done as advised and signed up to Police Connect. The Clerk detailed the difficulties experienced when trying to contact the police about a vehicle causing an obstruction (and this is a regular occurrence!). Then Councillor Cook explained the problems concerning lost and found property again being required to sign up to a computer site, Immobilise.com (seen in an article in the Daily Mail by a Suffolk Police officer!). I totally agree with Councillor Cook about found property remaining a police matter and it is wise to remember that property one finds could be linked to crime. Then we have “News from the Station” by PCSO Julia Bignall. Much of this was crime prevention advice. PCSO Bignall tells us that at the Hadleigh Show it was “lovely for me to chat to so many of you. I enjoy engaging with people”. The easiest way to do this on a regular basis, EVERY DAY even, is to get into the High Street and adjacent areas where there are lots of “local Hadleigh and surrounding villages residents”. Finally “News from the Station”. I ask what Station? Surely this now is just a building where police personnel go to use the toilets and make a cup of tea. Mrs Nicholls, Retired Police Sergeant

Hadleigh North District Councillors Contacting Tina Campbell and Dr. Siân Dawson After one year into the new Babergh District Council administration, we have taken the strategic view, following consultation with residents, to simply make ourselves available for surgery advice and to meet with residents at any time in the British Legion rather than a monthly surgery. Stoke by Nayland Ladies Open Fewer entries this year (78 from 11 clubs) which, in the circumstances, was probably a good thing. All the ladies were greeted at the entrance to the Club and either directed, if they had been before, or shown which changing room to use and where to register. The weather forecast had not been good but on the day it looked as though it might stay dry until the middle of the Paula Tennant (centre) from Hintlesham afternoon. This was not to be. had an eagle on the par 5, 5th Thunder and lightning left the Gainsborough. pro shop no option but to call On left Club Captain Ian Thompson, the ladies in before 3pm. on right Ladies Captain Betty Cox. Four teams had finished their game so it was agreed that the others would not be asked to go out again as this would delay the lunch too much. A 2 tee start meant that all teams had completed at least one nine so it was decided to make it a 9 hole competition with a first, second and third prize for each 9 and the overall winners being those with the highest 9 hole score. All ladies passed the halfway hut before the interruption and enjoyed the delicious home baked refreshments supplied by a band of volunteers. Organisers, Barbara Jones and Stella Buchanan thanked all those who helped on the day but gave special thanks to Captain Ian and Vice Captain Don who did the scoring and calmly dealt with the time consuming and mind boggling task of creating some acceptable results from all the uncompleted cards. The winners on countback, with 41 points on the back 9, were Meg Ramsey, Ann Graves, Pippa Neal and Nina Neilson from Woodbridge and there was a very nice email from them waiting for the organisers when they got home at the end of the day. Six birdies were scored and an eagle 3 on the 5th.

News from Hintlesham Golf Club Congratulations to Ali Mitchell who recently played in the Regional medal final at Thetford and finished 5th out of 113 players with a superb net score of 73 - one under par. Ali has now qualified for the National Grand Final to be held at Frilford Heath in August. This is a really good individual achievement and wonderful recognition for Hintlesham Golf Club especially our Ladies Section. Although a fairly small section our Ladies are producing some wonderful golf with Ali Mitchell and her golfing Partner Jill Smith being placed 5th in the Ping National Golf Competition last Autumn. Well done Ali!

Hadleigh Bowling Club Firstly it is with sadness that we have to report the passing of our recently retired President Percy Fletcher at the age of 92. Percy, a D-Day veteran, served our club in a number of posts as he did at Boxford Bowls Club before he joined us. He was meticulous in everything he did including approving the tributes at his funeral to ensure the facts were correct. He was an “old school gentleman” both on and off the green and will be missed by us all at the club. Now it is generally considered that bowls is a sport for the more mature members of society and although it is true that most of our members have quite a few miles on the clock it is worth noting that arguably one of the clubs best players is 16 year old Kyle Leeks who is only in his second season of bowling and in his rookie season (2015) he played for our Federation and Men’s EBA first teams. At the end of the season he won the Club Handicap Singles. This season he has gone from strength to strength and not only continues to plays for our club at the top level but has gone on to play for Suffolk in the Middleton Cup (Inter County Competition), the Federation County under 25 team and the Eastern Counties League Federation under 30 team. A remarkable achievement considering his age and experience and we congratulate him on his success. This season, for the first time, we are running an inter club league which is usually played on a Friday evening with teams of mixed ability including novices which is intended to give the less experienced players a taste of match conditions in a friendly atmosphere and judging from the response it has proven to be a popular addition to our fixtures. The green is looking fantastic thanks to our dedicated green team and we had the honour of hosting the Ipswich and District Federation Senior Cup Final on Friday 24 June, well done the team.

Golf Knocked For Six By Sally It was not cricket – but it was not golf either! Sports became somewhat confused at the Newton Green lady captain’s day of Sally Cade when members of the golf club decided to celebrate the occasion with a tribute to her second sport. A 12-handicap golfer, recently retired Colchester sports teacher Sally is a cricket coach. Her late father Ken Taylor played for Warwickshire and was Nottinghamshire manager (1978-90). She and husband Peter, whose wedding reception was at Trent Bridge, now follow Essex cricket, and were recently in New Zealand to see the World Cup. As a result of all these cricket connections, Sally was persuaded to don pads and waive a bat as she led her captain’s day celebrations. Lady members then got down to the serious part of the day, golf, playing 18 hole 4 ball better ball with the aid of a piece of string, paying for drives to be taken by Sally, or a male member of the Club who shall remain nameless. The proceeds for these privileges went to the Captains’ Charity, the Sudbury Kernos Centre. Results: 53 points Jill Symonds and Lizzie Johnson, 52 ocb Laura Lowe and Susan Sills, 52 Adrienne Hughes and Gwyneth Ferriera. Front nine, Pat Walsh and Pat Hawkins 28. Back nine Di Cunningham and Leighann Wordley 27. Nearest pin 13th hole Jenny Wilkins. Nearest pin on 6th Laura Lowe. The day would not have been such a success without hard work put in by many members but especially Ladies Vice-Captain, Rebecca Evans, the men who helped with serving refreshments, ladies who provided refreshments.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United will start the new season with a much changed team. This is because last year’s players have refused to accept the club’s offer of a reduced budget for next year. It is expected a young team will be on duty at the Millfield. A new manager is Stuart Alston with Andy Crisp his assistant. The Reserves will be managed by Andy Lambert assisted by Gavin Brightwell and Scott Lawrence. These three will also be in charge of the Thurlow Nunn youth team which will play their matches midweek. Another departure from the club is Alan Dilloway who has been a wonderful servant over the decades as a player and manager. Alan’s departure is for personal reasons and nothing to do with the financial situation. Also we say farewell to Chris and Louise who are moving to Lincolnshire. At the recent Annual General Meeting Rolf Beggerow thanked Tony Hayward and his youth section committee for all their hard work in an ever growing part of the football club. Rolf also said at the meeting that the new toilet block should be ready for the new season. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Barry Stokes and Terry Adams. The Ground improvement winner was Lee Day. Both draws were made by Donna Ramsey and the AGM. Terry Adams

Day 1 Arrived Aldeburgh 4.30am like excited school kids. Praying for tailwinds and sunshine, and maybe cake on the way. It was very cold especially as I braved shorts. I had a puncture! How is that possible? Not even started and a puncture! The other riders got underway by police escort. I stayed back to fix my bike so the first 25 miles were making up for lost time. The sun started to shine, the roads were flat but we knew not to overdo it. A long ride ahead. Initially we were riding as a large group, but there came a touching of wheels. One rider crashed. He was lucky and fell into a field. He and bike all good. The route went near my house. My family met us with banners and cake for all riders. It was amazing. Carol, the best supporter in the world. To Hartest for lunch, sitting on the green in the sunshine, eating sandwiches and cake. Lovely. Onwards to Newmarket, fast and flat roads, beautiful countryside, and then Cambridge. This was a nightmare to get through, loads of traffic. So much for being biker friendly! 92 miles in the bag. Day 2 Cambridge to Stratford upon Avon. Weather perfect. 25 miles fast and flat to the first tea stop. We had an unscheduled stop at a shop called The Cake Shop. Well it would be rude not to. But the ride after was hard. Lunch was great. More cakes! Then the hills started. One was 14%. The hill down was awesome and a new speed record for me of 43.6mph. The hills continued to come and roll but my legs felt good. Day 3 was incredibly tough. Stratford upon Avon to Hay on Wye. 7500ft of climbing. The morning was beautiful, flat and fast, great spirits in the team. Then the hills came. And boy did they come again and again. Mental toughness, regular breaks and great support crew got us through. This was one of the hardest rides I have ever done. My legs were well and truly broken. I had little sleep, a bit emotional chatting to family Day 4 90miles 7500ft of climbing. It was tipping it down and I felt couldn't ride. Everything hurt, and mentally I was on another planet. I decided to lead out, get my head down for the first climb. Well somehow I flew up the hill and my body and mind boom back in it. Got to the top. The rain was awful but we kept going for 25 miles and heard about a cake shop and pie shop in the next town, both to die for apparently. We spent the next 20 miles deciding pie or cake. We arrived in the town and had pie and coffee. Maybe rude not to try the cake shop, so we had cake too. The ride was stunning, around a reservoir and dams. Then the wind kicked in. It was incredibly hard. 10.5 mph was all we could manage. Really pushing, it was going to be a long ride. We arrived at the famous farmhouse climb about one mile long but so steep that the front wheel kept lifting up whilst sitting down, but spinning the rear whilst standing. The final push was to Devils Bridge. We pushed to the top, the view was spectacular Dave and I crossed the line together. Two very happy chaps. That was just awesome!! The ‘Two Daves’
