Unsung Heroes recognised at Awards Ceremony Unsung heroes are being honoured at the Babergh Community Achievement Awards on Wednesday 18th March 2015. The awards ceremony, which has been organised by Babergh District Council with generous sponsorship provided by Prolog, will take place at Stoke-byNayland Hotel, Golf and Spa at 6pm. The event will recognise 23 individuals and groups that have given many hours of their time to help the communities in which they live. Over 30 nominations were received for this annual Awards ceremony which recognises those that provide endless hours of community service in the areas in which they live. Cllr James Long, Chairman of Babergh District Council, who will be presenting the Awards, said: “The Babergh awards have been running for over 20 years and have become an opportunity to celebrate with individuals and groups to recognise and thank them for their hard work and achievements. As Chairman, I am delighted to be able to meet the people that can make a big difference in some of our smallest communities.” Robert Audley, Executive Chairman of Prolog said “I feel incredibly proud to sponsor
the Babergh Community Achievement Awards again this year; the event recognises so many selfless individuals and groups that are giving up their time to support others. I would like to congratulate all of the winners whose drive, determination and commitment make the Babergh District a better place to be.” Local Winners include: Beryl Holmes, Lavenham; Rita Hoyle, Hadleigh; Jan Dicks, Hadleigh; Helen Landon, Whatfield; Ray & Liz Parker, Whatfield; Gwen Runnacles, Burstall; Keith Raby, Burstall; Linda Newbigging, Kersey; Sue Fayers, Lavenham; Fred Breyer, Hadleigh; Penny Spraggon, Hadleigh As part of this year’s ceremony, the Council have been working with media students from Suffolk One to produce a short film on all winners, which will be shown at the awards ceremony. The film highlights the individuals or groups work and also features the nominator explaining why they felt an award should be given. Anyone living in the Babergh District and who works in the local community, on an unpaid, voluntary basis, was eligible for nomination. This community work could come in any shape or form, from fundraising work, to campaigning for improved local services, or providing a long-term service to the community.

There's been a recent rush of applications to the Rosa Simon Music Fund since the last issue of the HCN, which is great news! To date, we've supported 12 projects totalling £3,216.52, out of an income received of £14,489.22. These projects usually involve the purchase of high quality instruments for our local schools, playgroups, churches and child minders - plus some tuition fees for talented pupils whose family circumstances make such an outlay problematic. I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to see nursery pupils and Mrs Sheena Broadbent at Hadleigh Community School playing the large African gathering drum purchased through a donation from the Fund. Equally, it was great to see the sheer range of multicultural instruments brought by the Hadleigh Community Preschool from monies supplied by the Fund, not least as that was where Rosa went in the months before she died. We are now able to confirm that The Rosa Simon Music Workshop and Concert will go ahead on Saturday June 6th at the Hadleigh United Reformed Church and the Ansell Centre. We will be sharing more details in the next edition of the HCN and on social media, but basically we are inviting a number of Year 5 and 6 pupils from the local primary schools and some Year 7 and 8 students from Hadleigh High School to participate. Between 10am and 1pm there will be a fantastic workshop in the church run by professional jazz pianist and composer Pete Letanka, who will help them devise a half hour piece for performance, interspersed with other musical items the schools themselves will have rehearsed beforehand. After lunch, from 2.15pm the youngsters will come together to finalise the programme in time for a concert at 3pm in the Ansell Centre to which everyone is invited. Tickets will be available beforehand as well as on the door! Paul Simon

Howard with Helen at Angel Delights As you rush to your letter box to pick-up this magazine the nights will be considerably lighter. The clocks will go forward on Sunday, 29 March. What a relief. After a quiet start to the year, the property market has got a bit busier. Please come and see us to handle your Conveyancing. You can have the benefit of my considerable experience. You can come to see us, ask questions and generally be in touch with your transaction. That is not true if you try to use an “on line” outfit. I am able to go to see my clients in Hadleigh if needs be. We receive lots of enquiries about Lasting Powers of Attorney and can help you also with your Wills. Now I am sure that you read things other than my column. Do you ever have “This England”. My mother, Brenda, has a subscription as a present from one of her best friends, Muriel. When I heard that Angel Delights at 85 High Street, Tel. 01473 828191, had won the award for the Finest Tea Shop in England, I had to get in contact with its owner Helen Golland. As you can see, I joined Helen for tea just outside her shop. The tea shop is very popular and that is no surprise. Helen’s scones are fresh, moist and pert and are found in sweet or savoury including cranberry and coconut. There are light lunches and afternoon tea is £5.75 and a more luxurious affair can be enjoyed at £12.50. Fine bone china and tiered cake plates await you. It is all so much nicer than these horrible chains with their tasteless mass produced eats and cups of coffee like buckets. Helen also provides an excellent outside catering service for weddings, funerals and such like but better to try and enjoy these goodies whilst you are still alive. So many of you want to know more about Frank and Maria. Maria has had a little trouble with her varicose veins. So unsightly, but it comes from all the standing up. Last year, Maria was bent double pulling Frank’s turnips before they became woody. It didn’t do her any good. Frank drove me in the Number 1 car to Finchley so that I could go to an NSPCC quiz with my dear friend Elizabeth. I seemed to pick up a nasty bug which has been on my chest. Frank waited with the car whilst my mother, my Secretary Janet and I enjoyed that new film “Fifty Shades of Grey”. Everyone winks knowingly at the mere mention of the name, however, it is quite a serious story dealing with a relationship where the gentleman was a “dominator” and all of the paraphernalia that that entailed. It was a public showing. We must have been an amusing sight to the hoards of teenage girls that filled the cinema to bursting point. Why not go and see the film. Howard Gibbons

Hadleigh Library friends Group presents Giles and his adopted town of Ipswich - An illustrated talk Carl Giles long cartoon-drawing career covered almost the whole second half of the last century. He touched upon just about every aspect of life in our country. A large number of his cartoons were based on Ipswich and the surrounding aeas of Suffolk where he lived and worked for much of his career. John Field compiles the annual Giles Cartoon Collection for Express Newspapers and his talk will focus the way in which Giles used local scenes as a basis for his cartoons. For a fascinating evening come along to Hadleigh Library at 7 pm on Wednesday 18th March. Tickets are £5 and can be bought from the library.
Fidelis Activity News Another Flock:- The rag trade was re-created just recently when members formed their own production line to make sheep bunting as part of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015 celebrations. Starting with drawing round templates to machining all component parts together, the ladies produced a considerable number of the colourful, cheery little figures which will adorn the High Street before too long. Apart from enjoying the morning, there was a great sense of achievement which is just as well as several more bunting making sessions are planned for the coming months. Cartooning:- Considering the work of many famous cartoonists through the eyes of another skilled illustrator was bound to be an interesting experience. So it was when local cartoonist, Bryan Haylock, came to speak on the subject of Cartooning. Armed with several examples of their work and many anecdotes, Bryan commented on and told tales about Giles, Searle, HeathRobinson, Hoffnung and Hogarth to name just a few. Although he had also brought examples his own most recent work, the illustrations for … book our modest speaker had concealed those in a very large portfolio. It was a fascinating subject about which Bryan is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Jim Lawrence:- There are many factors which must have contributed to Jim Lawrence’s success but top of the list has to be quality, design and craftsmanship. On a recent visit to the company’s headquarters in Hadleigh members were fortunate enough to experience these aspects of his business first hand. With cries of ‘Wow, ‘I had no idea’ and ‘Amazing’ the ladies toured the various areas devoted to creating his exclusive range of lighting and home furnishing products. Meticulously hand crafted by dedicated staff in spacious workshops, it was easy and fascinating to follow the many luxury items from the raw material stage to their safe place in a massive store room. There was also time to browse round the bright, airy showroom with its comprehensive and attractive display of many of the company’s products and soft furnishings. This area is open to the public. Our thanks to all at Jim Lawrence for their time, patience and warm hospitality. www.jim-lawrence.co.uk/ Jan Devey

Spring in the Boule-in! ‘I LOVE the Spring.’ says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston’s stylish French store The Boule-in ‘It’s the first Spring flowers appearing bringing new life to the countryside: I suddenly want to rejuvenate my home and garden - perhaps it’s the promise of Summer sunshine and adventures of the year ahead…” Listening to the flourishing success of this small business, it seems that Cathy and her husband are already enjoying a great adventure with The Boule-in which opened its second premises earlier this year, this time in London. “Yes its been unbelievably exciting” enthuses Cathy “we never imagined when we came back from Provence in 2011 that annual exhibitions from our home in Suffolk would lead to a permanent premises in London. Our hearts are definitely in Suffolk but we can now indulge in our love of France together with the fun of London too!” The success of the London store has sent them back to France to replenish their stock even more regularly. “It was amazing - we were almost completely sold out within the first couple of weeks so we had to make a mad dash back to restock - its great though because we have some amazing new pieces and almost twice as many things to offer at our Suffolk 'Fête du Printemps’ in March”. With the addition of some new lines in industrial furniture and a 60’s vintage vibe, Peter has added to their strap line Stylish French Collectables “Everything is sourced in France but not everything is French!” he laughs “We haven’t been able to resist some of the amazing colours of Italian Murano Art glass or Florentine trays that we’ve spotted during our searches - after all they’re all pieces that any stylish French collector would be proud to possess”. As well as classic French finds - mirrors, china and glassware to enhance your home, look for fabulously large galvanised tubs and vintage French garden furniture to give your garden joie de vivre this Spring. The Boule-in 'Fête du Printemps Fair' runs from Saturday 21st until Sunday 29th March (10am - 5pm daily) www.boule-in.co.uk

Welcome to our new head teacher We would like to welcome our new head teacher, Ms Lynne Golding, to Bildeston Primary School. Ms Golding is now head teacher of Whatfield and Bildeston Primary School as they entered into collaboration at the start of the autumn term. Ms Golding is spending her time getting to know the children and parents at our school. We hope you will join us in wishing her success in her new role. Hadleigh Freemasons remember Robert Burns
It’s our first Anniversary!
On January 23rd Hadleigh freemasons together with their ladies and personal guests attended the Brett Valley Lodge Burns Supper held at The Town Hall. This Annual Event proved as popular as ever with 120 people in attendance all enjoying a five course meal with traditional scottish piper and of course ‘The Address to The Haggis’ which was carried out by W.Bro. J. Adams in his usual exuberant style. The evening commenced with a standard short masonic meeting for the brethren of the lodge after which all the guests were invited into the Lodge Room to be greeted by the Worshipful Master and then entertained by W.Bro. E. Maser with a short talk on freemasonry and the work carried out by individual officers within the lodge. A raffle was held during the evening and ÂŁ475 was raised through the generosity of those present and which will be added to monies already held and will be distributed as is usual to local charities in due course. Robert Burns was initiated an Entered Apprentice Freemason in Lodge St. David, Tarbolton on 4 July 1781, at the age of 23. His initiation fee was 12s 6d. (This would be the equivalent of ÂŁ67.00 today) Burns was passed to the degree of Fellowcraft, and raised to the degree of Master Mason on 1st October 1781. The Lodge record book reads as follows: "Robert Burns in Lochlea was passed and raised, Henry Cowan being Master, James Humphrey Snr. Warden, Alexr. Smith Jnr. Warden, Robert Wodrow Secretary and James Manson Treasurer, and John Tannock Taylor and others of the Brethren being present". When Burns moved to Dumfries, he joined Lodge St. Andrew on St. John's Day, 1788, and once again, showed a great enthusiasm for his Lodge. In 1792, he was elected Senior Warden and served a one-year term. This was the last Masonic office he held before his death in 1796, he was 37 years old. Brett Valley Lodge meet and dine at The Town Hall in Hadleigh on the fourth fridays in September, November, January, March and May. For more information see www.brettvalley.org.uk. Kelvin Avis

Hadleigh Community Primary News Basketball Success! We are delighted to announce that our mixed team of Year 5 and 6 children won the pyramid Basketball competition held at Hadleigh High School on Wednesday 4th February. It was a wonderful event and we would like to thank the High School for their support. The next stage of the competition will be in March when we compete with Ipswich schools in the Ipswich finals. Hadleigh Pyramid Swimming Gala On Monday 9th February, twelve local schools competed in the Hadleigh Swimming Gala and we are glad to announce that despite extremely strong competition, we won! We took four boys and four girls from years 5 & 6 to the event; we would like to thank the team for swimming so well for us. We would also like to thank Mrs Kirk for selecting the team and Mr Robinson and Miss Knock for all of their support. Miraiker’s Puppets visit Year 1 On Tuesday 10th February Miraiker visited Year 1 as part of their study of old and new toys. The children made a timeline of old and new puppets – the oldest being 100 years old! One of the children was extremely excited to have handled an 80 year old puppet. Miraiker’s collection even included Spit The Dog from Tiswas (only those of a certain age will recognise the name). Miraiker used her puppets to tell the story of George and The Dragon. The children were very excited by the experience and it certainly enhanced their understanding of their topic!

If, when you are walking take a closer look at the countryside you will see new life beginning to show its face to the world. This new life happens every year regardless of what is happening in the economy or the wider world. Mother Nature carries on regardless in spite of snow, frosts and rain to bring us the miracle of Spring in all its glory. Within this miracle lies new hope for better things to come and perhaps peace in our troubled world. We need to keep this uppermost in our minds and send our thoughts out to those caught up in conflict, hoping that compassion, reason, and peace will prevail. We, the healers, at the Hadleigh Healing Society are there to listen and help those who are troubled by what is going on in the world. We do not judge, we listen. What ever the problem, physical or emotional, we will try to help. Telephone for an appointment 01473 823282 or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org. We shall be having another day of Clairvoyance on Saturday, 11th April between 10am - 4pm. A twenty minute private reading £12. with a choice of three mediums. News from The Station It only seems a short while ago that I was writing February’s article but here we are in March. The weather has been cold with wintry showers and icy conditions. My colleagues have been regularly called upon to attend road traffic collisions on our local roads, dealing with vehicles caught out by the sometimes treacherous conditions. Some of the incidents could have been avoided where driver error was to blame but in some instances local conditions meant ice formed on the roads even though gritters had been through. Our local road system is mainly rural lanes and as such drivers need to carry extra equipment with them to ensure they keep themselves and others safe. Items should include a torch, blanket, shovel, warm drink and mobile phone. I have heard of people keeping old bits of carpet in the boot to assist with traction should the vehicle slide on ice. Please ensure your vehicles are checked to ensure oil, antifreeze and battery levels are correct. Lighting is also a necessity in the dark mornings and evenings. The area has also been subject to a number of Burglaries. These have ranged from outbuildings being broken into to houses being entered. Could I ask that you all look at your own property and try to make reasonable efforts to improving your own security. This doesn’t have to be expensive, replacing a padlock, strengthening a gate, extra lighting can target harden your homes and businesses. Please also be vigilant. Our neighbourhood watch teams are doing a good job and reporting regular sightings to us. If you are interested in joining your local team then please either contact your local co-ordinator or get in touch with us at the contact details below. Officers at Hadleigh are patrolling the area, stopping and checking suspicious vehicles, particularly late at night. If you do travel around late at night, please do not be offended if you are stopped by a patrol. There have been an increasing number of calls regarding Anti- social behaviour at the leisure centre and at the High School in the evenings, particularly at the weekends. Patrols are being dispatched to deal with a few individuals who are causing annoyance and distress to the customers and staff at both locations. A list of names is being compiled from CCTV identification and other enquiries and further work will be continuing with those individuals responsible. This is childish and irresponsible behaviour by youths aged 14 – 16 and is taking up precious time by officers dealing with situations. Thank you for reading this months article. Please do contact the team if you have any concerns or questions on either 101, attend the station or by email: Babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk

Beatrice Holdsworth (1923 - 2015) Beatrice sadly passed away on the 6th February. Mother to Pat and Allan; Grandmother to Paul, Dawn, Jayne, Denise, Steven and Daniel. The Family would like to thank everyone for attending her service at St. Mary’s Church and would like to thank you all for your kind words and condolences. In Beatrice’s memory we would like to share her Tribute: Beatrice was born in 1923 in Stepney London E1. Her life was very hard in the beginning. In her teens, she made uniforms for our soldiers. Beatrice brought up 2 children, Pat and Allan, on her own during the war while her husband was in the army for 6 years. Beatrice became an upholsterer and curtain maker. The company she worked for re-fitted the big liners and hotels; The Queen Mary, The Oriana, The Ritz Hotel and The Carlton Hotel amongst others. Beatrice later went into the fashion industry and made garments for Eastex and Windsmore. This little Cockney Sparrow flew to Suffolk and landed in Hadleigh to live with her daughter Pat and son-in-law Joe. Beatrice's life opened up when she moved to Hadleigh, she joined all the clubs and made many friends. She was well liked. Beatrice was cheeky, mischievous and always up for a singsong, a laugh and joke with that little twinkle in her eyes. Beatrice had a good heart; she would listen and try to help anyone. Beatrice loved life to the full always asking “where are we going next?” Beatrice will be in our hearts forever and greatly missed by all of us. God Bless xx Remember Me Remember me in your hearts, your thoughts, Your memories of times we loved, And the times we cried, The times we fought, And the times we laughed. For if you always think of me, I will have never gone. Dawn Edwards

Denise van Outen spends romantic Valentine’s weekend in luxury lodge at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa Actress, singer, TV & radio presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star, Denise Van Outen chose to return to her favourite lodge at the family-owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa for her Valentine’s weekend with boyfriend Eddie Boxshall and two close friends. Having loved her stay in the lodges when she played in the Ladies European Tour Access Series Pro Am last October, Denise booked to return for two nights for a packed Valentines itinerary at this renowned award-winning golf and spa resort, situated in beautiful Constable Country on the Suffolk/Essex border. Arriving Friday evening, the new guest Eastenders actress and friends enjoyed a sumptuous dinner in the hotel’s Two AA Rosette Lakes Restaurant with family director Tamara Unwin and husband Stephen. Denise had been interviewed on the red carpet the night before for the Premier of 50 Shades of Grey, but despite 3 hours sleep looked as stunning as ever in an elegant short black dress with sky high heels. After a photoshoot in the lodges on Saturday morning Denise teed off on the Gainsborough course for a relaxed round of golf with her friends. She only took up the game last year and is already looking impressive on the course, showing a natural swing and aptitude. A fun Rasul Mud Therapy Experience after her golf – one of the most popular treatments in the hotel’s Peake Spa – provided Denise and her singer/songwriter friend Cozi Costi with much hilarity. On Valentine’s night Denise and friends enjoyed a special romantic champagne candlelit dinner in the Lakes Restaurant. She was so impressed by the excellent quality of the food that she wanted to thank Executive Head Chef Alan Paton and his talented team personally – and surprised him by walking into the kitchen to order her own dessert and asking him to do a selfie with her. The delighted and startled Chef was very happy to oblige! After dinner Denise and friends joined hotel family owners Tamara Unwin and Susanna Rendall and their guests in the Devora Suite and quickly got into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme for the hotel’s Valentine’s Ball, dancing the night away to popular live band, Juke Box Fury. Denise shared several photos of her fun weekend with her 600,000 or so twitter followers, commenting “Best Valentines weekend of golf, dinner and dancing with Cozicosti, Eddieboxshall and Dunc at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa”. Her stay was also featured in the Mail on Sunday the next day. She later said “We literally had the best time. We had a really fun day followed by a lovely meal in the evening. We met some great people and it was everything we wanted it to be. The lodges are amazing and we felt like we had our own space and we could really enjoy the weekend.” Hotel director Tamara Unwin said “We were thrilled that Denise and Eddie decided to come to Stoke by Nayland for their first Valentine’s weekend together and that they had the opportunity to enjoy all the facilities on offer here. We believe that the seclusion, luxury and comfort of the lodges together with the excellent dining, golf and spa facilities at the hotel provide a unique winning combination for anyone needing to escape for a romantic fun-filled break, and we are really delighted that they had such a great time”. For more information about Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa and Country Lodges visit www.stokebynayland.com or call 01206 262836.

…but fear not, there is no need to contact Babergh Council, as Dick Whittington came to the rescue at the annual CHAPS (Chamberlin Hall Amateur Player Society) pantomime. Take larger than life characters, add plenty of children, throw in corny jokes, mix in references to local places and people and hey presto, you’ve got the receipe for a perfect panto! Even with the best ingredients, it’s the performers who make the show and draw the crowds who want to see that special blend of a homegrown cast and funpacked tale. Directed by Lesley Woods, Principal at Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts, ensured a show full of fun, laughter, song and dance and with MLSPA students taking the role of villagers and rockin' rats the show proved to be a visual spectacle with choreographed routines to many foot tapping songs. The biggest laughs were whipped up by Adrian Chinery who played Sarah the Cook and gave many a professional panto dame a run for their money with his enthusiastic wit, stylish wigs and outrageous costumes (pictured with Divvy Dave played by David Piggott). Caroline Gage (owner of Corn Craft In Monks Eleigh) made her CHAPS stage debut and thoroughly enjoyed playing Dick alongside the CHAPS cast including the evil King Rat (Debbie Bailey) and love interest Alice Fitzwarren (Wendy Rodwell). Also making her debut was Vicki Bolton, a classically trained ballet dancer who was purrfect in her role as Thomasina The Cat, who moved with cat-like elegance and grace across the stage. With months of rehearsals and five performances over two weekends, the cast are all looking forward to a well earned rest before beginning rehearsals later in the year for the 2016 Panto! Oh yes they are! On a final note, both Lesley Woods (Director) and Adrian Chinery (Chairman) would like to thank all the cast mentioned above plus Will Pratt, Michael Biddulph, Jane Fellingham, Janet Mackie, Christine Hubbard, Linda Underwood and all those people behind the scenes for their involvement in CHAPS and for their commitment and hard work. Everyone at CHAPS would like to express their thanks to all those who came and watched, laughed or groaned and hope to see you all again in 2016! If anyone is interested in joining CHAPS in future productions, either on stage or behind the scenes, please contact Adrian on 01449 741253

Stretch - into Spring! Stretching is vital for muscle health. Whether you are a professional athlete, play amateur football, hockey, rugby or basketball, a keen cyclist, runner or swimmer, even if you are just walking the dog every day, no matter what your level of fitness keeping muscle flexibility is key to good muscle health. Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance. HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need. CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue. Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained. For more information on the benefits of stretching or treatments and if you would like a personal stretching treatment plan please call Karen Ann on 07772 286106.

Do You Know Why You’re Overweight? There are so many reasons why we become overweight, sometimes it happens and we just haven’t realised, we may have been going through a stressful period in our lives or we’ve just tried to pretend it’s not happening and we come up with all sorts of excuses!! Excuses like “it’s my hormones/metabolism” or my clothes have shrunk!! It’s always easy to find an excuse and (very) occasionally it can be caused by an imbalance of hormones but for the vast majority of us it’s simple – we eat too much of the wrong things!! Not rocket science really!! Our modern lifestyle is partly to blame – mostly we’re too busy to walk even the shortest distance so we jump in the car instead, and we eat anything that’s quick and readily available. All too often that means high fat, high carbohydrate and high calorie foods. These are usually highly processed and have poor nutritional values so we could actually end up malnourished!!! This in turn can create health issues which could affect us for years to come! Cambridge Weight Plan can help you change all that. With 6 different steps we can find a plan to suit anyone whether they have a few pounds or a few stone to lose. It provides 100% nutrition enabling you to lose that excess weight quickly and healthily. It then teaches you how to eat so that you remain in control for long-term maintenance. Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. When you choose Cambridge Weight Plan you have the benefit of your own personal consultant who has experienced her own weight loss journey on the programme, understands how you’ll feel along the way and will help you achieve your goal. You’ll get individual support and motivation from accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord (with 6 years’ experience). For more information go to www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL. Contact her on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp You could soon be saying ”I wish I’d found Cambridge sooner!”

Welfare Matters to the RBL The Hadleigh & District Branch of the Royal British Legion supports the local community in four ways; we are the custodian of Remembrance, we offer Comradeship and Representation and of course we provide Welfare support. In recent years we have seen and heard a lot about the younger veterans who served in the most recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and their welfare needs are great. However, we should not forget that there are thousands of older veterans out there who also served their country. This year sees the 70th anniversary of the ending of WW2 and we have many in this community who served during this time. If anyone out there wants to know more about welfare support, then either pop into the club on George Street and ask for the contact details for the Branch Committee, or call the RBL Welfare team direct on: RBL Welfare Hotline - 08457 725725

GREAT WAR NEWS MARCH 1915 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)
Wed 3rd March Royal Congratulations. Mr Alfred Michael Oxford, of Crown Brickworks, Red Hill, Hadleigh, the father of six sons serving in the Army, has received a letter of congratulations from the King, stating that His Majesty much appreciated the spirit of patriotism which promoted such an example in one family, of loyalty and devotion to their Sovereign and Empire. The six sons are - Pte John Oxford, 2nd Suffolks; Pte Walter Oxford, 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers (both served in the South African War); Pte Frank Oxford, 1st Bedfords; Pte Alfred Oxford, 1st Bedfords; Corporal Frederick Oxford, 55th Battery Royal Field Artillery and Gunner Arthur Oxford, 35th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. [This branch of the Oxford family was born at Cobblers Corner, Lower Layham and moved to Hadleigh after 1901. Wed 24th March The Aftermath of War, “The death of Pte 6668 James Baker of the 2nd Suffolks, is reported from the British prisoner’s camp at Doebertitz, Germany. It is said that “with more humane treatment, especially with regard to food, the life might have been saved”. (Pte Baker was originally thought to have been killed at the Battle of Le Cateau in August 1914, but in fact had been taken prisoner). Wed 24th March Weekly Dispatch Tobacco Fund. Hadleigh people have supported this fund in a generous manner and the subscribers to it have the satisfaction of knowing what pleasure and comfort their contributions have afforded to our sailors and soldiers. Mon 29th March Belgian Day was observed and a house to house collection made to raise funds for alleviating the woeful distress of the inhabitants of this destitute nation.

Harassment and Offensive Action In this article we remember: Jesse Goody - 5 March 1915 Edmund Fromant - 16 March 1915 James Baker - March 1915 The Battle over the small French farming village of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915 was the first planned offensive of 1915. The village at the southern end of the line held by the British Army had been destroyed in 1914 and left in German hands for the winter. In early 1915 it was reckoned to be lightly defended and if an assault was successful the allies could push through to the industrial areas of Lille and the hub of the railway network. Two British Corps would attack. The Indian Corps to the south, included the 4th Suffolk Territorial Battalion with Private Alfred Jesse Harriss of Bridge Street. The IV Corps to the north included the 1st Sherwood Foresters with Pte Bernard Vince from Duke Street, Sergeant Alfred Allen and Private Herbert William Fenning of Angel Street and also the 2nd Gordon Highlanders with Sergeant Arthur Girling of the White Horse, Stone Street. The Battle of Neuve Chapelle began on 10th March and there was intense fighting over 4 days. However the initial successes soon became bogged down largely due to flawed and confused orders and shortage of munitions. By 5.30pm on the first day the 1st Sherwood Foresters who had followed through on the initial assault, had reached the most easterly point achieved in the battle and became held up by strongly fortified defences. Heavy enemy machine gun fire prevented further progress. The 2nd Gordon Highlanders were in reserve to the north west and moved close to front line on the 11th, but in the early hours of the following morning were forced to retreat due to heavy enemy shell fire. On the afternoon of the 11th March the 4th Suffolk who were in support in the south moved into the centre of the captured village, but at dusk were ordered to withdraw because movement at the front line had stalled. In total the allies suffered around 12,000 casualties. The village was captured, but not much else. No Hadleigh men lost their lives. The British continued to harass the enemy along the entire 30 miles of front line. This strategy was crucial in order to pin the Germans down and weaken their ability to reinforce any specific point of attack. However, it also meant that the front line was a very dangerous place to be. In the front line at St Eloi to the south of Ypres was the 4th Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps. On the 4th of March they experienced very heavy shelling from enemy howitzers but only suffered a few casualties. The 5th was according to the Goody Family Home, war diary ‘a very quiet day’, 91 George Street, however, that is when next to The Cock Inn Corporal 7728 Jesse Goody from Hadleigh was killed. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Menin Gate. Jesse Goody was born in August 1888 son of Charles and Esther and enlisted into the army on the 3rd December 1906. The family grew to become probably the largest family in Hadleigh; at the time of the 1911 census Jesse has 17 siblings alive, with 13 plus the parents living in the family home at 91 George Street. Jesse entered the war on 20th December 1914 only to be killed in action 3 months later. Four brothers also served in forces with Frederick losing his life in Gaza in 1917 and sister Lottie losing her husband, Arthur William Abbott, at Passchendaele in 1918. Also to lose his life in March 1915 was Private Edmund George Dawson Fromant he was born in Hadleigh in 1893 and his father was a solicitor’s clerk living at Guthum House, 145 Angel Street. Edmund was a Professional Associate of the Surveyors Institute and a Probationer of the Royal Institute of British Architects. It is unclear when he enlisted, probably at the outbreak of the war, but it was at Chelsea and he enlisted into the Royal Army Medical Corps and served with the 15th sanitary section, 1st City of London Sanitary Company. He entered the war 15th January 1915 and died of wounds in hospital on 16th March, his body is interred in Ramparts Cemetery by the Lille Gate in Ypres. As well as being remembered on Hadleigh’s Roll of Honour, there is also a brass plaque dedicated to his memory in the north chapel of St Mary’s church. If you have family information that can enhance these stories it would be good to hear from you, please contact us via the Project web site; http://www.hadleighww1

YOUTH SPEAKS: this is a national competition run by Rotary for schools. I reported in the December issue that a team from Hadleigh High School had reached the District finals. They took part in this on 14 February at the College of West Anglia in Kings Lynn and 2 members of the Club travelled to support them as they competed against 3 other schools. Once again they all spoke very well arguing the case for voluntary euthanasia but in a close fought contest where standards were very high they were just pipped at the post by a team from Norwich School. The team comprising of Isabel Chaplin, Lois Cooper and Laura Flockhart competed in the Intermediate Section and although they were disappointed to lose they did so with honour and we hope that they enjoyed the experience. Who knows, they may have a chance to take part in the senior event next year! The Club's congratulations go to the girls for an excellent performance. The senior finals of the competition also took place and this was won by a very good team from Ipswich High School who will go on to the Area finals. ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA): This is another activity for young people provided by Rotary. It is directed at youngsters in the age group 18 - 26 and is business orientated outward bound type course which takes place at Grafham Water nr Huntingdon usually in early September. It is a week's course involving business games, sailing, leadership exercises and expeditions, public speaking training and other similar activities. It is a very challenging course but virtually everyone who takes part enjoys the experience and returns with greater self confidence and business skills. It is suitable for business trainees, students etc with only one essential to be a reasonably good swimmer as some activities are water based. The course is run by very professional people and costs only £600 which is much cheaper than the equivalent commercial courses. If any local employer has a suitable candidate please get in touch with the Club as soon as possible and we will provide more detailed information. MEMBERSHIP: So far the article in last month's issue has produced only one definite enquiry. Come along Hadleigh don't be shy, the chance to sample Rotary and see if it is for you is only a telephone call away - David Stokes 01473 827226 - You might actually enjoy it!! Activities on the horizon are a spring trip to the Banbury area, summer BBQ, a summer outing, an autumn concert and Christmas Party. The first year has flown by!! You will also have the opportunity to become involved in the youth projects mentioned before and other charity and social events. We look forward to hearing from you.

Poets Corner Lazy Days Ah, I am dreaming of lazy, summer days So hot, you can actually see the heat haze A glass of chilled wine in my hand No jobs to do, nothing planned. I raise my face to the sun and bask in its warmth and I smile So content, in this moment of time, to relax for a little while. A loud knock on my door, brings me back to reality, on this grey, cold day. Still, I can imagine, my sunny, hoy, lazy day, hideaway. Roll on summer!! Sue Ann Williamston

With the half term break fast approaching, now is a good time to reflect on what has been a very productive, busy and successful half term at Beaumont School. As well as the great work that goes on in the classrooms, we are very fortunate to be able to offer our pupils a range of activities outside the classrooms to support their development and enhance the curriculum. Year 6 visited Bury St.Edmunds to support the children’s work on Myths and Legends. In the morning they learnt about and visited the Cathedral and ruins of the great abbey. In the afternoon they took part in craft activities organised by the learning team at the Cathedral. The children also learnt about the legend of St. Edmund and the campaign to reinstate him as patron saint of England. Even though it was bitterly Year 6 standing beside the statue cold, with snow on the ground the of St. Edmund outside the children had a wonderful day learning Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds about this interesting town. An account of the day written by Lakisha Charema in Year 6: It was a cold, frosty Monday morning; everyone was wrapped up warm in their winter coats ready to go. The whole of Spiders class were extremely lucky because we were going on a trip to Bury St Edmunds for our topic this term. After travelling to Bury St Edmunds by car, we walked to St. Edmunds Cathedral where we met some lovely people who worked there. A kind lady called Jane explained everything about what we were going to do. To start off we role played the story of St. Edmund which I found very entertaining. Elliot was our Edmund, the King of East Anglia, and Rhianne, Lionel, Chelsie and Adam were the Vikings from Norway raiding East Anglia and making Edmund give up his belief of God. Edmund was asked once more by the Vikings and still said no. They were very savage and tied him to an oak tree, threw arrows at him and beheaded him. Tracy, Eve M and Eve B were the towns’ people that searched the forest for his head. It turns out that a wolf, that was acted by William, was guarding the head of King Edmund and that was the story of how St. Edmund became a Saint. Next, the class was split into groups; group 1 and group 2. I was in group 1. Both the groups were told to take a clipboard and a pencil to write down notes while we had a tour of the cathedral. Group 1 was with Jane and group 2 was with a man called John. I thought Jane was very excellent at keeping everyone interested. Group 1 walked towards an embroidered banner of St. Edmund tied to an oak tree getting covered in arrows. That amazing banner was stitched by Sybil Andrews and took her from 1930-1975 to finish. We also saw a wooden carving of St. Edmund that was very realistic and smooth. Next to it, where his shrine would be, was where people pray to him. St. Edmund’s bishop had his own chair guarded by griffins (half lion, half bird) and a wolf on top of St. Edmund’s head. All of a sudden my teacher told me to look upwards… Above me was an incredible ceiling in blue, white and real gold. I was absolutely amazed at the detail of the pattern. Jane carried on and told us about the bible stand that was an eagle. She explained it was an eagle because it is the strongest bird and can spread the message of God. Slowly we walked to the lantern tower which was beautiful because the ceiling was very tall. The next ceiling was shaped like a Viking long ship and had the colours green and red. After that we went outside to the Abbey and saw the Norman tower which was the gateway to the Abbey. The monks made the original Abbey and 60 of them lived there. The Abbey was the biggest Abbey in Europe. Eventually we got to see where the old Abbey was and we saw the Treasure room. The Abbey would have been 360 feet tall. In the afternoon, after lunch and the gift shop, we completed some craft activities to remind us of the story of St. Edmund. Walking back to the teachers’ cars everyone was talking about how amazing it was. Finally we got back to school and were very happy and wanted to go again. I really enjoyed the trip and would give it a 10/10. Spiders and Beetles curriculum was enriched by a visit from an expert dancer Lorraine Theobald who led the children in 2 fantastic workshops based around the topic work they had been undertaking in class. Beetle class had been studying Mayan history and culture, so Lorraine taught them traditional Mayan dances as well as talking to the children about the Beetle Class enjoying their instruments, music and customs of this Mayan dance workshop fascinating culture. In the afternoon Spiders class learnt about traditional British dances which supported their work on traditional British legends. They ended up performing a dance which depicted the legend of St. George and the dragon. Dance is a really popular activity at Beaumont school, with two after school dance clubs running currently. So it was really difficult to choose 4 of our dancers to send to a dance workshop kindly arranged by Whatfield Primary School and run by Dance East. The children who attended were given expert tuition and advice on how to improve their dance. They arranged and performed a variety of exciting dances. Lastly, on a sporting front we have had teams compete at both a local basketball tournament and swimming gala. As always the children did exceptionally well and represented the school admirably in both competitions. Below is a picture of our basketball team, who should be proud, as their skills certainly improved as the tournament went on, winning their last match by a considerable margin! Although we didn’t figure in the winning teams the children performed really Our basketball team at the well. Their superb behaviour and basketball tournament at sporting attitude was commented on by Hadleigh High School staff members and spectators alike.

Hadleigh Evening WI Hadleigh WI member Glenn Abbassi spoke about her “travels as an Anthony Nolan Courier” at the February meeting. Anthony died in 1976 and his mother initiated the formation of the Bone Marrow register. A bone marrow transplant is a lifesaving procedure for patients suffering from some forms of leukaemia. In Germany unlike the UK people will be on their register unless they opt out. As a consequence they have many donors. Glenn has travelled to Germany hundreds of times to pick up bone marrow and flies with her life saving cargo to countries as far away as China. The WI was founded in 1915. Celebrations of the centenary will include the National meeting at the Royal Albert Hall on 4th June where we will be represented by Carole Cranston. It will be transmitted in cinemas throughout the country. On the 2nd June the Duchess of Cornwall will be hosting a garden party for members at Buckingham Palace. Dying – it Matters May 23rd 2015, 10am-4pm St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh In conversation a few months ago, Pauline Thrower of St Mary’s Church, and Kate Brett, of Hadleigh Health Centre, felt a need in the Town of Hadleigh and surrounding area for more openness and discussion about care of the dying and everything surrounding death itself. Our vision for ‘Dying – it Matters’ is a free, one day event in the style of a trade fair, to be held in St Mary’s Church Hadleigh. It is aimed at the general public, to come and ask the questions of all the professionals present that they have always wanted to ask and find the answers to – for example: What services can the doctors or care homes offer? What roles do hospices have? When do I contact a funeral director? What funeral choices are available and how much do they cost? Where can I go for emotional support? What legal and practical aspects do I need to know about? Of course there are many more questions so we are bringing together under one roof local professionals who can provide direction for you. These include the Hadleigh Health Centre, local Churches, Care Homes, Funeral Directors, Solicitors, Caterers and Florist plus many more. We have also arranged for an Embroidery Exhibition to be on show for the day and the week following consisting of 10 panels created by a lady expressing her grief at the loss of her husband. This will be supported by a pastoral care team for the week, to support those bereaved and for whom the event may raise emotional issues. We will be including counselling and support information covering the death of people of all ages and for those who mourn of all ages. We feel it is important that children in both categories are catered for as well as adults. We are producing a booklet including details of all those who take part in the day which will be issued to those attending, to be a handy reference whenever required. Put the date in your diary now and look in your Hadleigh Community News next month for further information

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Another promising rider, introduced by Anne her Instructor. “Chloe is aged 7 (going on 17!) I think it would be fair to say that Chloe was one of our more reluctant riders. Her favourite word for her first few visits was “No”! A strong willed little girl, it took a little cajoling and encouragement and a final lift to get her on the pony. As expected she has never looked back. Chloe is now, after just over a year, one of our more confident riders sporting some of the coolest pink riding gear. Sitting beautifully on her pony, with great posture and balance she is a ‘natural’. She is riding off the lead rope for part of her ride and confidently and safely controlling her pony. She competed in the Shelley Show coming a commendable 2nd in her dressage test despite being understandably very nervous. Chloe is working towards her ASDAN award with help from her school. We enjoy Chloe’s positive attitude to riding and are sure she will become an excellent rider.” Well done Chloe - pictured here doing exercises whilst riding Holly. By the time you read this we will have enjoyed another evening of fun and frustration at the Quiz Night as well as a spectacular performance of the talented young musicians at the Royal Hospital School at their Charity Gala Concert (still just time to get tickets for 7th March – give us a ring). We are most grateful to all those who organised, took part or attended both of these events and for the monies contributed to The Centre. Don’t forget to seek out our stand at the Hadleigh Show on 16th May where you will be able to talk to us about the work that we do throughout the year. We will also be selling cakes, preserves and plants – mainly vegetables – and would welcome any contributions. Please ensure that edible products come with a full list of ingredients. We look forward to seeing you there. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172
The Future of Windows Windows 7 is now six years old with its end-of-support date penciled in for 2020. Any computer currently running Windows 7 is unlikely to still be around by then and it is now quite hard to find a new Windows 7 machine. As an aside Vista goes out of support in 2017 although I doubt that there are many still running that much maligned operating system. Most people hate Windows 8 and 8.1 although they can be made to look ok with a little work. So what is one to do? The good news is that Windows 10, which should become available later this year, is going to be a free upgrade to users of Windows 7, 8.0 and 8.1. Microsoft is in a bad place after the disaster of Windows 8 and needs to grow the user base of Windows 10 quickly and giving it away is their plan. Even better, after experimenting with a preview, Windows 10 isn’t too bad. It has a recognizable Start menu and performs pretty well on the seven year old hardware that I tested. There are a few things better than Windows 7 particularly for touch screen devices but what is best about Windows 10 is that isn’t Windows 8. So what to do with an old XP or Vista box that needs replacing? If you can, wait a few months, and go straight to Windows 10. If you can’t stand the thought of Windows 8.1 I may be able to help with a bespoke Windows 7 machine. In the mean time for any help and advice contact Nick Kotarski 07790 842 968 / 01206 299 568 nick@kotarski.co.uk or visit kotarski.co.uk.

Antique Shop In Boxford Opens Saturday 7th March Helen Miles is opening Country House Antiques a small but perfectly formed antique shop in the middle of the lovely Suffolk village of Boxford. I have been dealing in antiques for a considerable time, buying and selling antique and early 20th century pictures and 19th century decorative items. I tend to buy what attracts me and enjoy getting up early and travelling, sometimes some distance to find original and desirable pieces to sell. I believe it is so much better to hunt out a one off item that gives you pleasure every time you look at it, rather than buying something mass produced from a high street shop. I will be selling items from £15 - £500 and hope people will be able to find something in my shop for their home, garden or as a gift. Perhaps a garden pot a maple framed picture or a small piece of furniture. I will be open Thursday to Saturday 10.00 - 4.30 pm 2 Broad Street, Boxford CO10 5DX 01787 Telephone 210258 or 07899 835409

Healthy Communities Babergh District Council Healthy Communities have joined forces with Hadleigh Health Centre to help combat inactivity and obesity both of which are big factors for an individual’s health and well-being. Our aim is to help the residents of Hadleigh understand how they can improve their general health and wellbeing with a quick and easy Ready and Go Body Check. The Ready and Go Body Check is quick and easy to complete. You just need to remove your socks and shoes and jump on. Boditrax is a cloud hosted digital platform performing body composition, activity tracking, allowing us to set individual goals and report on your personal progress. The Ready and Go Body Check Results shows exactly what you are made of; including weight, BMI, fat mass, muscle mass, water mass, bone mass and visceral fat score (the bad stuff around your heart and lungs). The system includes an easy to follow traffic light rating that shows your results as Red, Amber or Green zone clearly highlighting areas to focus on. The Ready and Go Body Check Assessment takes just 5-minutes and gives the users immediate access to their own results which can be viewed on any internet enabled device. If their results show an Amber or Red Indicator they will automatically be entitled to a free self-referral with a qualified Community Health and Wellbeing Coach. They then will have the opportunity to discuss how they feel about their results, and be signposted to community health and wellbeing partners who can support them to achieve their personal goals. This may include; drinking more water, looking at what they eat or drink or being more active. The Ready and Go Body Check provides an accessible early intervention to everyone in the community young or old. We can all benefit from understanding what we are made of and this self-help approach will also helpto reduce costs to the NHS in the long term. There are no additional costs to them for this service. Joe Harvey, Health and Wellbeing Manager leading this project on behalf of the Babergh District Council Healthy Communities Team says ‘we will be providing this service from the Hadleigh Health Centre Practice, Market Place, Hadleigh every Friday Morning between 08:30 and 12:30, there is no need to book just come and see what everyone is talking about. This service is available for the whole community.’ Peter Larner, Manager of Hadleigh Health Centre added `We are delighted to host this exciting new service. I encourage all our patients to give it a go – and it is free` If you would like to know more or to book to have Ready and Go Body Checks to your club, group, organisation, workforce or friends you can contact our Healthy Communities Team now on 01473 823470 or email us on healthycommunities@ssleisure.co.uk
Visitor Point 2015 Visitor Point, based in St Mary’s Church, aims to provide a welcome and a source of information for visitors to Hadleigh. The welcomers are volunteers, working in two-hour sessions on a monthly rota. Could you offer 2 hours a month to help? The rota will start again on Monday 4 May, and will continue until the end of September. It can be flexible to allow for holidays and special events. Of course, you need to like meeting people, but you do not need any special historical knowledge or town information; all this is provided on a range of leaflets available. For more information about the rota, and to join the team, please send your contact details to office@stmaryshadleigh.co.uk or telephone 827102 (answer phone available). Alternatively, you could put a note through the letterbox of the Church office door - on the left as you enter the church by the main door. All team members from 2014 will automatically receive information for 2015. St Mary’s Hadleigh - alive and active in the community

Hadleigh and Glemsford will see their Children's Centres shut down at the end of March. One refurbished, the other purpose-built for children, fully funded by Labour and only opened in 2008 and 2010, they were part of Sure Start. The idea behind Sure Start was to bring together, under one roof, early help, guidance and protection for children and families. Services free for all at the point of need. Breaking down barriers and providing discreet and targeted support for those with problems. Prevention would give a better start wherever needed. It would also be cheaper longer term – in personal and human costs, but also for public services. It made sense, was needed and it worked. But Sure Start Children's Centres are also an easy target for short-term cuts in Suffolk. I’ve met parents and carers who won’t go to re-located centres. No one's yet told the expectant mums at Glemsford where their future ante natal checks will happen. One thinks she’ll have to go to Sudbury, but doesn’t drive. Another mum, keen to attend a confidence-building programme having fled a violent ex-partner, won’t get there if it’s not held within walking distance. The idea of asking directions at reception in a leisure centre for such a deeply personal course fills her with horror. "Where will we have our family counselling now?" asked another. I don’t know - and nor does the Council. The disruption caused doesn't count with those councillors who voted to close them. They're busy piling up the obstacles blocking children and families from services they value and need; services that, indirectly, benefit all of us in the long run. Many parents knew from the outset that the closure plans were a done deal and the public consultation a very slanted sham. Subsequent events have proved them right. So why bother to protest and petition, complain and campaign? There's a simple answer. Sometimes, it's impossible not to. Despite the pressures we face to obey authority, to defer to the powerful and accept what is, we have choices. We can play ball, go along with the obvious charades, and take whatever's given. That can feel easier. But sometimes, because we live in a democracy, we can say 'No!'. We can take sides, suggest alternatives, call for change and look authority in the eye. For me, decisions on services affecting the future of our children will remain one of those times. There will be another one in May this year. Kersey Mill Newsletter Work has moved inside away from the wheel house and the cold of winter and is now firmly fixed on repairs to the Pitwheel. The Pitwheel is attached by a shaft to the water wheel and as the water wheel turns so does the pit-wheel producing the power and drive for the internal workings of the mill. We have recently discovered that the Pitwheel in its entirety will need recogging, we had hoped that some of Picture of Pitwheel mortise the existing teeth would go-again before being cleaned however they now appear to be far worse than we had initially thought so it is a complete repair that is required. We have recently cleaned the years of dirt, remains of the some old teeth and rust away from the rim of the wheel and coated with a layer of paint that can be easily removed on completion of the repairs, this is needed as fine measurements and markings are required to enable the new tooth blank to be fitted within the existing cast-iron mortise. When the rim was produced back in the early 1800’s it was not as a precise science as would be today with say a Ferrari engine, so when it comes to the fitting of the wooded teeth any adjustments that are required due to errors within the moulding of the rim could and would be corrected at this stage. The two halves of the 10ft.6 Pitwheel appear to have been cast very accurately. In a mortise wheel the mortises are made by the use of cores. Although great effort is made to space these cores accurately they can move a little under pressure of molten cast iron. Any inaccuracies can be corrected by offsetting the cog on its shank. Incredibly the rim seems to be in very good order, it is only the wooden parts that have deteriorated over the past 200 years, we need to replace and repair a few wooden spokes along with all the 112 teeth. We recently took delivery of the oak that we require for the task in hand, the oak for the teeth has now been measured and cut into blocks as seen in the photograph, it now needs to be stored within a warm cupboard or two as to prevent the wood from taking on moisture and swelling as this can only be allowed to happen once the tooth is fitted. The teeth need to be very dry when fitted to the wheel It then is allowed to swell with moisture making for a very tight fit within the mortise. Restoring the old mill built in the early 1800’s is a huge task involving skills now almost forgotten, and one of these is fitting new wooden teeth to the great gear wheel. Now the technical part begins but more on this part of the task next month.

A Perfect Pre-Prom Day Organised by the Year 11 leadership team, the prom is causing much excitement among the year as the day quickly approaches. For many girls (and boys) this is the highlight of their year. The pre-prom evening is the perfect chance for girls to find stylists to do their hair, nails and make up. There will also be opportunities to sample dresses, shoes and accessories to make it a night to remember. Tickets will be on sale for between £2-£3. It is aimed at Years 10 and 11 who have got proms coming up. Heart Foundation Over the years we have encouraged our pupils to take a greater degree of Leadership and responsibility in deciding which charitable causes they wish to support. We feel that it is vital that pupils are able to prepare themselves for adult life by considering the needs of others and taking a collective responsibility for supporting causes which can improve the life chances of others. Our pupils regularly wish to raise funds for a variety of charities some local, some national and some international. Recently, they decided to support the British Heart Foundation’s initiative to support research into coronary heart disease by wearing something red. Some pupils and staff came completely in red whilst others wore only a hint of red on Friday 6th February. With coronary heart disease being the UK’s single biggest killer which affects all ages, our pupils felt this event was an important cause. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has, for over 50 years, pioneered research that has transformed the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions and their work has been central to the discoveries of vital treatments that are changing the fight against heart disease. With so many staff and pupils supporting the day, we look forward to hearing how much we have managed to raise.
Basketball In February, the under 13 girls’ basketball team went up against five different teams in the South Suffolk competition. We are delighted to report that they came second. We interviewed Mr Cook, Subject Leader for PE, who said ‘the team worked together very well and showed lots of effort and consideration in the way they played’. Congratulations to the Hadleigh High team on their triumph. Guardian Angels at Hadleigh High During the last week of the half term, teachers around Hadleigh High were becoming Guardian Angles for the week, by secretly handing out gifts anonymously to one another. The gifts could be anything from joke letters to buying small gifts. We spoke to the teacher running the project and she told us, “It is not about how much you spend, but the thought that goes into the gifts.” We then interviewed more teachers to collect their views on the project and they told us that “it was just as much fun giving the gifts as receiving them”! Sports Stars of the Month Year 10 student, Connie Powell, has had a successful trial for London and South England rugby squad. She is also pushing for a spot in the England under 15’s squad. Another sporting success this half-term has been Rowan Bennett and Alex Baxter being selected to run for Suffolk. As a result of their fine performances in the three selection events held at Royal Hospital School, Leiston and Culford. Rowan (year 7) and Alex (year 10) were selected represent Suffolk in the Anglian Championships held at RHS on the 7th February. Sports Fixtures and Results Our hockey teams are doing a fantastic job this half term, with many fixtures being played by all year groups. The year 7 team have performed outstandingly well as well as the Year 10 and Year 11 team. Year 5/6 Basketball Pyramid Tournament Nine teams from eight schools in the Hadleigh Schools Pyramid competed in the Year 5/6 Basketball tournament. The event took place on the 4th February and ran very smoothly with the help of the Year 9 Sports Prefects. The Competition was organised by Mr Fahy, PE Teacher. The eventual winners were Hadleigh CP 1st place and in 2nd place was Whatfield. Both of these teams will be advancing to the next stage of the competition.
Raising the House Flag The junior house prefects challenged each house to create a flag to be made and used at house events. Pupils from all years are working together to create a winning design. When they’re finished they will be printed as proper flags to be used to support the house competitions. Miss Calvino, the head of Pupil leadership, who is coordinating it with the House prefects said, “The Designs are coming along very nicely”. They look very impressive so far and we look forward to seeing the finished results. Good luck to all the artists representing each house. Breakfast wars! Recently, Year 10s have been holding a battle of the breakfasts between “Morning munch” and “Bare breakfast”. Both teams are selling various breakfast items such as muffins, fruit, cereal and much more. This is all in aid of raising money for the school and building up business skills for the young people involved. Both teams were given £25 to spend on whatever food they wish. “Bare Breakfast’s” approach to spending was to buy a wide selection food of which they told us would bring more people because different people like different things. On the other hand, “Morning munch” had a different approach with buying a smaller selection. They told us this would mean they could buy a larger quantity of the food they wanted.

French’s Care Haven French’s are holding two events this month and we are inviting you to come along and join us. On 5th March we are welcoming you to join us at The Indian Villa in Hadleigh for a Charity Curry Night, this is our second visit to the I.V. We are going back as the food was plenty in our Buffet and it was delicious. You can book your place on the contact number below or direct to the restaurant on 01473 828599 and say you are booking for The Charity Night. Please come along and support us. Mutts and Wellies Charity Dog Walk will be held on Sunday 22nd March, leaving from the Charities base at French’s Farm, Pond Hall Road. 11am start for roughly an hour’s walk and then back to the farm for a have a chat, drink and bite to eat and we will introduce you to some of our wonderful rescued horses. It is always good to see spring approaching, as the winter months are really hard work for staff and volunteers and no fun at all for the rescued horses and animals. Feed and bedding bills are massive and it usually takes us all spring, summer and autumn holding fund raising events to clear our previous winter’s depts. We are still looking for sponsors to help and support us. This year already we have had an offer of sponsorship from a local family run business, supplying us with wood shavings for our horses bedding. Phillip Brothers Woodshavings Ltd based in Raydon. This is brilliant news for us, as this is our first sponsor and they are local people helping a local cause, which is so good to report. We couldn’t be happier as they have a good product and are very keen to help promote us at home and on their travels. See picture enclosed of Jane, Jann, Donna and Coco. We would like to thank all the customers at Morrisons in Hadleigh who kindly gave us donations on 22nd November while French’s volunteers were at the store for the day, Thank you. Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 I had lots of cuddles when we visited the lovely people at Suffolk Life Pensions in Ipswich last month. SESAW was one of three charities supported by the company last year. As a result, Mum and Marian were presented with a cheque for £4109, a wonderful donation, while I received much attention from the staff. The fundraisers enjoyed the occasion too because, as you probably know, animals are excellent stress busters. Many universities, including University Campus Suffolk, arrange animal petting sessions to help students chill out whilst studying. If you are looking for a pet to share your life, come and see the animals waiting for you at SESAW. Now the weather is better, new volunteers are busy with outside maintenance, but we still need more people for animal care and fundraising. Please leave a phone message if you are interested or visit one of our events. Barbara is holding a Mad March Sale in the Stratford St.Mary Parish Room, 10am on 7th March. Next is our Easter Fayre at Whatfield Village Hall, midday on 21st March. Tables are still available at our Grand Table Sale in the Old School, Long Melford, 10-3pm on 12th April. Phone 01206 263269 to book. Mum says I must thank all the kind people who send donations with no contact details. If you want to save postage but would like a reply and have access to the internet, please message us via email or Facebook. Now I must take a nap after all this hard work. SKy Watch Partial Eclipse of The Sun On Friday March 20th 2015 one of the greatest astronomical events occurs and its happening in the morning! Before we go further a warning:- NEVER look at the Sun with the naked eye or any form of optical aid - you will risk permanent eye damage or even blindness! The partial solar eclipse can be safely viewed with specially made glasses or filters, easily available on the Internet for just a couple of pounds. It is imperative that these glasses are marked "CE", with this mark you can guarantee safety for your eyes. It can't be emphasised enough, please DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN without the correct optical aids. Now we have that out of the way, March 20th sees a total solar eclipse which will be total, or in other words the moon will completely cover the sun's face if you are lucky enough to live in the Faroe Islands, but sadly we are not, so we will have to settle for next best - a partial solar eclipse - and substantial too. The Moon will be at "new" phase on the 20th and so directly passes between Earth and Sun when conditions of the Moon's orbit are just right the Moon appears to perfectly cover the solar disk. This of course is a optical illusion. The sun is a massive star, and the optical illusion is caused because the diameter of the Sun is 400 times larger than the Moons but the Sun is also about 400 times farther away. This then negates the Sun's size and the 2 appear equal in size. Another piece of luck for us is that this is unique in the solar system. No other planet has a moon that covers the sun as well as ours does. So with your eye protection on what will you see (clear sky also allowing)? The timing of the event begins at 08:27 when the moon will begin to nibble at the sun's disk, slowly but surely the moon will creep across the sun's face until at 9:33 the maximum of the partial eclipse will occur a total of 80% will be obscured and the sun will appear very much as the graphic with this article. After this time the solar disk will begin to return to normal, the time the last piece of the moon leaves the sun is 10:44 am. Should we miss this one, the next as good as this will not be until 12th August 2026. For the next total eclipse ,if you missed the one on 11th August 1999 and were in Cornwall, it doesn't happen until just before sunset on 23rd September 2090. As you can see it's an event that won't come along very often so if you can slip out of work, or the house at 09:33 with your glasses you won't be disappointed. So why don't we have an eclipse every month at New Moon? The answer is the Moon has an orbit inclined (tilted) at more then 5 degrees to Earth's orbit around the sun, our orbit is named the ecliptic plane, and the moon must reach this point at new phase to create an eclipse. The Moon's orbit is actually elliptical meaning at the Moon's perigee (closet point to earth), it covers the Sun perfectly, but if the moon is at apogee (farthest point from earth), it will appear smaller and thus seem to fit within the sun. This type of eclipse is a annular eclipse. During these types the sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus which is the Latin for," little ring". The Moon and Earth's orbital planes cross each other at points called the "line of nodes". This will mean between 2 and up to 5 solar eclipses occurring per year; no more than 2 can be total. But one type of eclipse can be safety viewed with your eyes -the total Lunar eclipse. The next is on 28th Sept 2015 and will be visible from here. This occurs when the Moons phase is full and so the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon. The Moon passes into the shadow of Earth as it's cast into space by the Sun and the Moon takes on a rusty or blood colour the eclipse lasts for 3hrs and 20mins in September with the Moon being totally eclipse for 1hr 12mins. The reason for the blood red colour of the Moon? This is fully dependant on the amount of dust in the atmosphere, the rule of thumb is the more dust the deeper red the Moon will be. A guaranteed good red Moon will occur if there is a volcanic eruption between now and September also forest fires that spring up over the Northern hemisphere this summer. If neither phenomena happen the Moon will take on a rusty hue to its colour. So hopefully the skies will be clear on March 20th and September 28th as we have the chance to see two very different types of eclipse. Good luck and clear skies to all. Hadleigh and District Garden Club A great evening was enjoyed by Hadleigh and District Garden Club on Monday 9th of February when Matt Tanton-Brown gave us a full-on talk, demonstration and explanation of all types of propagation from seeds, bulbs and corms, cuttings, grafting, budding and division. One of the world's communicators Matt kept up a non-stop dialogue on all aspects of the craft in a highly amusing, interesting and instructive way: at the same time, knowing our local conditions, was able to advise in such a way that we could all work out why things can and do sometimes fail, as well as the best way to avoid the problems of botrytis, damping- off etc. A really worthwhile evening. Our next meeting on Monday March 9th is our AGM, please come and maybe bring some ideas for future meetings. Ruth Allen 822323
Pause for Thought Why should I support them? I've worked hard for everything I've got and I need to look after myself and my family not those dole scroungers out there! That's a commonly heard complaint and even the Bible kind of agrees with that when it says in Paul's second letter to the Thessalonian church “Even when we were with you, we gave you this command “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat”. It seems like an open and shut case doesn't it? Not quite, because in Matthews Gospel it says after we die and come to judgement, God will say “ I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.” Then we might query “when did we see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality?” It comes to the crunch when Jesus says “ I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these...... you were doing it to me” So next time you hear yourself saying “Why should I support them?” just remember even offering what little help and support you can to someone, even if it's just a cup or tea and a listening ear, you are doing something worthwhile and you will get your reward. After all what we get from God is a free gift, so let's use it wisely. Kenny Sanderson
Hadleigh Springclean March 7th 10am - 12 noon There have been a number of complaints about the bad state of the pathway beside the road between Hadleigh and Layham. Anyone who walks along this path will know just how dangerous it has become, especially in view of the speed of the traffic. On Saturday, March 7th from 10-12 Layham PC is organising a work party to clear the path of foliage and fallen branches as the road is actually in Hadleigh they have asked for volunteers from Hadleigh. If you would be willing to help make this path safer please contact Jane Haylock at The Idler, 01473 827752 jane@theidler.plus.com or Michael Woods at michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts My main thought at the moment is that in mid February we have had a magnificent week for getting the Spring garden jobs done in a garden carpeted by Crocuses. A succession of mild days meant that the ground temperature at present is an unexpected 9 Cel, and everything is starting to grow beautifully. The trouble is that by the time you are reading this we could be back to Winter. This year's brassica plot has been limed. (Late I know. It should have been done in the Autumn but now is better than just before planting.) Some of the hedges, the blackberry and the loganberry have been pruned and the pruning disposed of. If someone is only going to grow one soft fruit I would recommend a blackberry. A good thornless variety trained along a fence can yield 9 to 12lb of fruit per year, and requires very little attention apart from cutting out the old stems and tying in the new in February/March. The day I sat down to write this garden pests were in the news. The RHS analyse the number of enquiries that they get on various pests in a year and publish it as a top ten league table. The results for 2013 contained a lot of the problems which I see. The leading positions were held by Slugs/Snails and Vine Weavils. Also in the table from the previous year but in different positions were Cushion Scale, Ants, Glasshouse Mealy Bugs, and Lily Beetle. Pests in the 2013 list but not in the 2012 list were Capsid Bugs, Mice/Voles, Glasshouse Red Spider and Plum Moth. Last year I saw all of them except the Mice/Voles. On the same day they drew attention to the Allium Leaf Miner which joined us a few years ago from Europe and is now spreading. Leaf Miners are always difficult to kill because the grubs are inside the plant and therefore out of reach of insecticides or fingers. The 3mm long fly has two generations per year and lays its eggs in March/April and October/November. There is no chemical control, so if you want to guard against it, then rotate your crops and cover them with fleece at the danger times. This is going to be difficult for leeks in October/November. Weather Records In January at Kersey there was 62 mm (2.4) of rain, which is about 20% above average for the month. The 3 monthly total at the end of January was 197.5 mm (7.8) which is nearly 30% more than the average figure. In January the maximum temperature was 11 Cel (52F) and the minimum temperature was -4 Cel (25F) which are both about average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 9 Cel (48F). Mid February ground temperature seems to be quite variable, and is usually in the range 3 to 5 Cel So this is quite unusual. Hints March is the month when one really must make some time for the garden because :(a) Winter pruning of hedges, roses and fruit trees needs to be completed. Do not prune plum trees at this time because it can cause the silver leaf fungus disease. (b) It is the right time to sow a lot of flower and vegetable seeds. Even if you do not want the work of sowing seeds in pots and pricking out, you can get a good show of colour by sowing hardy annuals direct where you want the plants about the third week of March. Suitable types are Annual Chrysanthemum, Calendula, Clarkia, Eschscholzia, Godetia, Larkspur, and Linaria. Most vegetables can be sown, but check the packets. (c) The weeds will be growing well, and should not be allowed to seed. (d) The lawn will be growing again. Ideally give it a first light cut when it is about 3 inches long. It is also a good time to give it a feed. (e) Garden paths may well need a good clean to make them less slippery. John Rye

made at regional level rather than local and suggested that we therefore take this matter up with Morrison’s head office. The recommendation to accept the £790 +VAT quotation to insert a partition with a lockable door to the changing rooms to form an additional toilet was accepted. The recommendation to accept the use of toughened glass in structures on the allotments was not accepted. The allotment rules would remain unchanged stating that no glass structures would be considered on Hadleigh Town Councils sites. The Clerk was asked to write to the allotment holder who had requested a greenhouse with toughened glass advising that this would not be allowed due to health and safety issues. BUDGET REPORT 2014/15 The Clerk presented a report to Councillors and advised there was an increase of 115 Band D equivalent properties. It was proposed that a 2% increase be made which equated to 4 pence per week/£2.04 per annum. The following recommendations were all approved unanimously: a) Approve the ESTIMATES Year 2015/2016 showing revised net expenditure for 2014/2015 of £260,236 b) Estimates of expenditure and income for 2015/2016 resulting in net expenditure of £334,756 c)Endorse the proposals for the continuing use of Funds outlined in Sections 6, 7, and 8 d) Determine a Precept for the year 2015/2016 of £303,044 plus a grant of £16,244 giving a total of £319,288 The Clerk was asked to make it clear when reporting this increase that the amount equates to 4p per week or £2.00 per annum per band D property as it was considered that a percentage increase can sometimes cause concerns. Also to make clear the loss of the grant from Babergh District Council and advise where the money is going to be spent especially the new cemetery which is needed for the town’s future use. TOWN GUIDE The final draft of the next edition of the Town Guide to be produced had been sent to Councillors prior to the meeting. Councillors were pleased that the Company had taken on board the changes suggested. There being no further changes the draft was given full approval. Councillor Sheldrick was thanked for the work he had carried out to ensure the map was correct. TOWN MATTERS The Mayor advised that Councillors have been provided with A5 flyers advertising the forthcoming Neighbourhood Plan public consultation events and asked them to deliver them to houses in their area. The consultation events will be held on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st January in the Dining Room. It was felt that four Councillors per session would be needed and they were asked to advise the office of their availability to attend the sessions to answer any questions raised. Councillor Cook advised that an article had been sent to the Community News advising that on March 10th three sessions will be held in the Dining Room to provide residents with information and advice on being/becoming a Councillor. An information pack will be available. As there has not been an election since 2003 and there will be a number of vacancies for Hadleigh Town Council it was felt that residents need to be made aware of this and information should be provided. Councillor Cook hoped that Councillors would make themselves available to attend. Councillor Byrne advised that she had written a letter to the Community News providing information for residents who may wish to stand as independent candidates. Councillor Sheldrick had provided the Clerk with a request to contact Persimmon Homes on the unkempt state of the area adjacent to Tower Mill Lane and next to the balancing pond and could the area be considered for an allotment site and the pond be made safe. It was agreed that the Clerk would contact Persimmon Homes and bring this to their attention again. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.25pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk Report of the Meeting of the Planning Committee held on 15th January 2015 Present: Councillors: Matthews (Chair), Angland, Byrne, Cook, Haylock, Janas and Whiting. Suffolk County Councillor Riley had provided Council with the Highway Advice Note ESE01 “Advertising signs in the highway”. Under Section 3.0 Guidelines there were a number provided where removal of advertising signs would be considered. Those considered pertinent to Hadleigh were: i)Where more than one advertising sign is displayed per premises. ii)Where the advertising sign has not been removed from the highway by the owners when the premises to which the advertising sign relates are closed. iii)Where the advertising signs have not been placed outside the premises to which they relate. Councillors were requested to report back to the next meeting any signage where the above conditions were not being adhered to in order that specific details could

Following the meeting of the Working Party public consultation events headed ‘Shaping Hadleigh’s Future’ had been arranged to be held on Friday 30th January 10am to 12noon; 2pm to 4pm; 6pm to 8pm and Saturday 31st January 10am to 12noon. Letter www.layham.org from Layham Parish Council The February meeting of the Parish Council was held too late for notes on business covered to be included in this edition of the HCN. They will be recorded in the April edition. Your Parish Councillors stand down in April Your Parish Councillors are elected for a maximum of four years, after which they stand down and either retire or stand for re-election. The present Parish Council meets for the last time on Wednesday 25 March. The Chairman invites you to the Annual Parish Meeting on Wednesday 15 April, when reports are presented on what has been achieved - not only by the Parish Council, but by all organisations in the village during the past year. On this occasion the intention is to review what has been achieved over the last four years and we invite all who are interested to join us for a celebration of life in the village. Details will appear in the April edition of ‘Letter from Layham’ – in the meantime, please note the date. Election of a new Parish Council This year’s Parish Council election will take place on the same day as the General Election – Thursday 7 May – should it be necessary. Four years ago there were seven nominations for seven vacancies and so an election was not necessary. However, it is healthier for a community if there is some competition so your present Council urges you to think about getting involved with Parish Council work. During March details of how to nominate yourself as a candidate will appear on the village notice boards. If you want to find out more, talk to one of the existing councillors or to Jane Cryer, our Parish Clerk (a permanent position). Jane can be contacted on 07920 713940, or email layhampc@gmail.com.

Hot Sunday Lunch Sunday 22nd March, 12.30pm Layham Village Hall 2 Courses £8.50, Vegetarian option Please book by 18th March Tel: Audrey 822081 or Sonia 822220 Transport can be arranged - Proceeds to St Andrew’s Church Playing Field 100 Club The winning numbers for January were: £15 Ticket No 54, J.Woods; £10 Ticket No 87, Quedley RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch The weekend of 24/25 January was the time for the annual Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Garden Birdwatch. This count has been taking place for 36 years so the RSPB is gathering valuable information on trends in the bird population. Five households in Layham (four in Upper Layham and one in Lower Layham) combined their counts to give the following picture. These were the largest number of the same species seen across those five gardens at any one time during just one hour during that weekend. Blackbird 3; Blue Tit 4; Chaffinch 3; Collared Dove 4; Common Gull 3; Dunnock 2; Goldfinch 8; Great Tit 3; Greenfinch 2; Heron 1; House Sparrow 1; Jackdaw 3; Long Tailed Tit 4; Magpie 5; Pheasant 1; Robin 3; Starling 16; Wood Pigeon 3; Wren 1. The species in which there has been the greatest fall in numbers of these common garden birds are starlings, greenfinches and house sparrows – so keep feeding them. BUT make sure your bird table is clean as the fall in greenfinch numbers has been due to infection caused by picking up bacteria from dirty bird tables. From the Layham Archive - Hill Farm 100 years ago A hundred years ago most of the residents of this parish worked in agriculture – either as owners of farms, farm workers or in services supporting farms – such as millers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights or harness makers. It will be only a small proportion of those of us living in Layham now who can remember the pre-tractor years when every farm owned several valuable horses. We have been fortunate to have been given, by James Brice, some photographs of life on Hill Farm early in the 1900s. You can be forgiven for thinking that these pictures could have been taken anywhere but what makes them special is that they have been carefully annotated by the owner of the farm – James Miller. The two photos shown here give us a glimpse into a way of life when there was much more physical work on farms and therefore a greater number of employees. The first photograph shows the harvesting of wheat on Kiln Field Hill. The trace horse is Molly and the shaft horse is Betsy. David Miller (one of James’s sons) is on top of the cart with Eric Slater behind him. Reg Howlett is beside Betsy and a farmhand with the surname Peacock is standing beside a stook on the ground. The sheaves of wheat were piled in stooks to dry out before being collected up and taken to the stack yard. The second photograph again shows Betsy between the shafts of the wagon, which is loaded with sheaves of harvested wheat being transferred to the stack yard. The crop was stored in ricks which were thatched to keep them dry. A travelling gang (we call them ‘contractors’ now!) would come round the farms after the harvest and the crop would be threshed in the yard with a traction engine driving the threshing machine. The third photograph show James Miller (on left) and a farmhand dipping sheep to protect them against parasites. This sort of manhandling into a half-barrel would suggest the farm did not have many sheep. Had there been a sizeable flock the farm would have built a ground level trough through which the animals would have been walked.
Layham Playgroup The playgroup has been very busy since the start of the year. We once again welcome some more new children. We look forward to watching you develop on your playgroup journey with us. We hope you all had a lovely half term, although didn’t it go quickly? This term we are focusing on our favourite books and signs of spring. We will be joining in World book day by dressing up as characters from our favourite books. We are now selling tickets for our Easter egg fun trail to be held on Wednesday 25th March 10am–1pm. Tickets are ÂŁ5 for children, to include Easter egg fun trail, crafts, spaghetti bolognese, pudding, drink and Easter egg treat. Adults ÂŁ6 to include lunch, pudding and a drink. This is open to all, not just playgroup children, so if you want to join us and meet our playgroup family, please come along and join in the fun! Any vouchers you are able to donate are much appreciated as we are able to purchase new sports equipment to further our children’s development! Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Government funding is available for 3 year olds and in certain cases for some 2 year olds. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Our Toddler group takes place every Wednesday morning 9.30-11.00am and is open to all children aged 0-5 years. facebook.com/cutterandcohadleigh Perhaps it has something to do with just having seen the most amazing version of Hansel and Gretel at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester that gave me a penchant for gingerbread. And I know it tends to be seasonal, but why wait a whole year for one of the most aromatic spices to come around again? So here is a lovely little recipe for by Sarah Thompson gingerbread biscuits. They can be cut into any shape, and would make a delightful addition to afternoon tea. Or why not cut them into egg shapes and share as an alternative to chocolate Easter eggs? Great fun for decorating with icing and sprinkles of your choice. Gingerbread Biscuits Ingredients: 110g/4oz unsalted butter, 110/4oz light muscovado sugar 4 tbsps golden syrup, 325g/11oz plain flour 1tsp bicarbonate of soda, 2 tsps ground ginger Method Preheat the oven to 170 /325 F/Gas Mark 3, Line or grease a large baking tray. Sieve the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Melt the butter, sugar and syrup until dissolved. Add this to the flour mixture to form a dough. Roll dough on a floured surface to approx.. ½ cm. Press out shapes with cutters of choice. Place shapes on the pre-prepared baking tray and bake in the centre of the oven for 8-10 mins. (depending on the type of oven – check after 8 mins). Add icing and/or decorations of choice, or just enjoy with a nice cup of tea. Happy Easter one and all.

Dear Sir, Following on from the letter I wrote last month regarding the arrival of mysterious parking-prohibiting cones and attendant occasional work, I should like to congratulate the council and their tireless workforce for the wonderful encore provided this week. A fine regiment of cones once again adorned both sides of the High Street blocking off a dozen or so parking spaces and causing confusion and frustration to would be shoppers. Well done! I salute particularly those brave men on the ground, clad only in all-weather gear who bravely cut a one meter swathe in the trench thoughtfully filled in only a few months ago, displaying superb skills in heroically hacking out the offending rectangle of tarmac and hastily replacing it with shovel and rake with likewise material before removing themselves, vehicles and equipment leaving only the lonely cones as testament to their visitation. Congratulations too to those sturdy High Street residents who hastily rescued those poor cones from the gutter placing them securely out of harms way. How rewarding also to know that the roads of our town are being magically upgraded, half square meter at a time! Dennis M Baulk
Dear Sir, I have never learned to swim and although I had often thought about taking swimming lessons I let my nerves get the better of me. My memories of swimming lessons at school are not good and I also had a fear of the possibility of being a complete beginner in a group of people who could actually swim and would no doubt be younger than me. I attended a very good school, Palmer’s Boys Grammar in Grays, Essex between 1957 and 1962. I did not agree with their policy for boys swimming attire, so I opted for cross country running instead. At the beginning of last September my wife and I were eating at The George with some very good friends when John said that he had taken up

swimming lessons at Hadleigh Leisure Centre in order to be able to enjoy himself better when he and Gill go to Jamaica later this year. I thought well now was the time to literally take the plunge and I said that I would like to give it a go too. I admire John very much for having the courage to take that first step on his own. Thus ever since September our Tuesday evenings have been transformed between 5.45 and 6.30. We completed our first 12 week course in the middle of December and we are fast approaching the half way mark of the second course. From my first evening my thoughts of swimming lessons have been transformed. The whole experience is fun and there are no negatives to the whole experience. There are usually about eight of us, an equal mix of men and women, and we have great instructors in Rachel Oxford and Sue Freeman. Age is no barrier and you may gauge how old I am by my mention of school years above. Those who know the pool at Hadleigh will appreciate that it generates a homely atmosphere. It is a good place to be and I would like to say to anyone who would like to learn to join us on the course and have a good time doing so. The first step is the biggest and John and I know only too well that it can be a daunting experience but you will not regret it. I am sure that Davina Lamble at the Leisure Centre would love to hear from you and you will not feel at all out of place. We will certainly be signing up for the next course after this one finishes in March. Geoff Paisley
Dear Sir, I would like to add my voice to that of Christine Scott Fox who in last months Community News wrote in complaining of the bird scarers. My home is a mile away and yet with double glazing and the TV on I am still disturbed all day every day. It must be intolerable for nearer residents. Less intrusive methods of crop protection are surely available, perhaps even an old fashioned scarecrow like Wurzel Gummidge! Margaret Laws
Dear Sir, Surviving Winter in Hadleigh. I am about to start on a new project with the approval and support of the Suffolk Community Foundation, a registered charity. However to operate I require a working bank account to handle incoming and out going monies, mainly with the Foundation at this stage. I am advised that this is permissable subject to having a second signatory to the account. The objective is to raise funds to assist those in proven need of help to supplement their winter fuel needs and who are residents of Hadleigh or live within it's administrative boundary. There is no other purpose or objective involved. Is there anyone willing to assist me by keeping an independent watch of the bank account as a second signatory and of monitoring incoming and out going transactions. There will be no other requirement asked as I am quite prepared to organise and fund raise. I prefer to operate independently but without a second signatory I will be unable to get this worthy project off of the ground. I can be contacted on mobile number 07591 082772, which will be the dedicated contact number or via email fredbreyer12@gmail.com. Thank you for reading this appeal and in anticipation of your possible interest. Fred Breyer

Towards the Deep End I’ve mentioned before that meetings of the Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Joint Audit & Standards Committee should be a gentle canter through the agenda. After all it is not an auditor’s job to find things wrong – his job is always to find things correct! Of course the path of true business rarely runs smoothly. Discussion included the way forward for Treasury Management. A key feature was the provision for up to £25million borrowing by 2016/17 to fund the indicative capital programme. The provisional sum of £25m (for each council) that has been included in the draft capital programme for 2015/16 relates to delivery plan projects. Any use of this borrowing will be subject to a business case and will achieve a return on that investment and produce additional income to help towards the council’s medium term funding gap. (Fine words of course but they butter no parsnips)! The Treasury Policy management plan indicates that in the years 2016/7 and 2017/8 financing costs will absorb 32.74% and 35.07% of our Net Revenue Stream. The Committee was concerned that such ratios are unsustainable and incidentally they are what one would expect from a poor, financially troubled, small country. This development is causing some concern for those of us who believe that Councils are not always the best people to spend other people’s monies. There is rarely the rigour that applies to decisions in the commercial world and it is very rare for people to be punished for poor performance. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance and the question of what this money will be used for and more particularly what it will not be used for e.g. a new head office is being pursued and hopefully I can be more informative next month. Suffolk County Council has frozen Council Tax for the fifth consecutive year. This means that Suffolk residents will not pay any more in County Council Taxes than they did in 2010/11 thus honouring the Conservatives pledge. Babergh District Council’s meeting on 24th February is expected to approve a budget which similarly shows no increase in Council Taxes. I read in the E.A.D.T. that the Council Tax for Mid Suffolk could be set for a rise of just under 2% (which is the threshold for triggering a referendum). I’m not convinced that we have achieved all the efficiencies possible and so will continue to be active on behalf of Babergh’s residents and tax payers. Babergh District Councillor and Polstead Parish Councillor Sue Wigglesworth is a recipient of the MBE, awarded for her services to the community in Polstead. Sue has been chairperson of the Polstead Village Hall committee for the last 20 years and has been an independent representative at Babergh District Council since 1990. I would not wish to detract from the honour and who could fail to acknowledge the care and concern she evidenced for those residents of Polstead who might need more convenient parking when visiting the Hadleigh vet. Obviously she felt that nothing should stand in the way of such facilities especially when it meant that Hadleigh would have a large supermarket adjacent to its High Street, a proposal which was opposed by many right thinking organisations and people in our town and the surrounding area. Until the next time, Brian Riley

Two films you can’t afford to miss! Friday 13th March at 7.30 pm
Pride (15) This film is bursting with heart, exquisite moments and food for thought – in short this is your memorable night at our cinema! Set in the summer of 1984, PRIDE is based on a true story which centres around the workers on the picket line in a Welsh mining village and their unlikely allies - a flock of members of the Lesbians and Gay Support the Miners Group! Everything has changed since then yet the dramatic point of the film is whether these wildly dissimilar groups could draw strength from their differences. The quality of casting of this film is outstanding - Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West are superb - we like to think it should be remembered!
Friday 27th February at 7.30 pm
The Hundred Foot Journey (PG) The Hundred Foot Journey takes Helen Mirren, one of our most popular actors, into the realms of food – in a riot of a culture-clash comedy as Madame Mallory the imperious owner of a Michelin starred restaurant. The scene is set for the Kadam family to open an Indian restaurant directly opposite! It is a pleasure to watch such accomplished scene-stealers as Mirren and Om Puri (Papa) vying with each other on the screen – and you even forget Mirren's pseudo-French accent after a while! This is a feel good film feast, and one that combines French sophistication with a heady mix of Indian spices! Hollywood in Hadleigh is part of the Suffolk Digital Cinema network and is based in the Ansell Centre. Films start at 7.30 pm, cost is £3.50 on the door and refreshments are sold at an appropriate interval. We look forward to welcoming you!

One of Hadleigh’s on-call Firefighters hung up his firemans helmet for the final time at the end of February after 22 years of service to the community. Tom Robinson is pictured receiving a certificate presented by Group Commander Ken Williamson on behalf of the Chief Fire Officer. Tom joined the fire service in 1992 whilst working for the Royal Mail as a “postie” and continued even after promotion to a managerial role took him to the main office in Ipswich. Tom will be greatly missed by his fellow crew members and they all wish him well in his retirement.

News from St Mary’s Primary School It’s been another very busy month at St Mary’s! We are delighted to be involved in the ‘Be the Best You Can Be!’ programme, which is part of the Olympic legacy. The programme aims to help children raise their aspirations and take responsibility for their learning and achievements. We launched the programme with the visit of Wendy Smith, a Paralympian basketball player. Wendy met all of the children to tell them her inspiring story, which helped the children reflect on setting goals and overcoming obstacles to achieve them. The children responded so well to the event and were genuinely motivated to ‘Be the Best They Can Be!’ Well done to all the children who have represented the school at recent sports festivals and tournaments. Our mixed year 5/6 team played fantastically in the Hadleigh Primary Pyramid rugby festival - representing our school brilliantly. We played three group matches and finished 2nd in our "Big School" group. We then played a very close play-off match against Bildeston - eventually finishing 4th overall. We had several comments from other schools about what a skilful and competitive team we were! The team played well together supporting and encouraging each other well but what made us most proud was that they demonstrated fair play and sportsmanship throughout - speaking well of other schools, congratulating good play and always shaking hands at the end of a good match. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sharon and Steve Clements for helping to train our amazing team - and BIG congratulations to the team members for enthusiastic participation and doing our school proud! The children also had a great time at the basketball festival. They played some fast paced, skilled and competitive matches. They progressed to the ‘Silver play-offs’, eventually finishing 5th overall in the festival. This team worked fabulously together; they supported and encouraged fellow teammates and other schools. They represented St Marys School with pride and definitely lived up to the “Be the Best You Can Be” inspirational philosophy of our recent guest speaker Wendy Smith. Our swimming team were delighted with achieving 3rd place overall out of twelve school at the recent swimming gala. Thank you to all the parents who joined us for our recent ‘writing cafés’. This was a good opportunity for parents to see the writing skills we teach the children and to understand the expectations in each year group. It was lovely to see the parents and children working together to complete writing tasks collaboratively. This really motivated the children, who were really proud to show their work to mums, dads and grandparents! Well done to everyone involved in raising money for the British Heart Foundation, especially Sam in Year 5, who was very keen to support this worthy cause and worked hard to promote and organise things! We had a ‘wear red’ day and a successful cake sale. In total, we raised more the £275. Children in years 3, 4 and 5 were lucky to be involved in the ‘Poem for Suffolk’ project recently. A visiting poet, Dean Parkin, spent the day working with the children on writing class poems about life in Suffolk. Dean has been working in selected schools, libraries and other venues throughout the county. The project is funded by the Arts Council and the final poem will be ready in the autumn. We hope some of our children’s ideas will make it into the final piece! On the same day, twelve children from years 1 and 2 were lucky enough to visit Ormiston Academy to watch a play by the performing art Students. It was an amazing version of Julia Donaldson’s ‘Smartest Giant in town’. The play was performed in the Curve building in the drama studio and the children sat in a ‘round’ so they were really close to the action. We thought the giant was really funny and our favourite bit was when his trousers fell down! This was a unique and special opportunity for our pupils , which we were invited to because of the school’s recognition as a Centre of Excellence for the Arts Award. Through the Arts Award we should be experiencing other similar opportunities throughout the year. Thank you to Mrs Seed for organising this! Thank you, once again, to all the visitors who have joined us for Worship this month, including Father Peter Brett, Pastor Chris Todd and Reverend Joyce Willis. They have helped the children to reflect on the value of ‘peace’. The children in years 5 and 6 had a wonderful time at the ‘Life’ exhibition at the
United Reformed Church. Thank you to Trish, Karen and Mervyn, who organised the exhibition, which encouraged the children reflect on some of life’s ‘big questions’. Here are the responses of some of our children: “It was interesting that they told the story of Jesus using technology.” (Henry) “It was quite surprising to all be so involved rather than just sitting on the carpet listening. (Tom). “It was fascinating to see things expressed in a different way.” (Hollie). “It was like going back in time to the time of Jesus.” (Faith) “It was very inspiring - it made us feel part of who Jesus is.” (Emily) “They didn't bombard you with questions; they let you find out for yourself.” (Nia) The children have worked really hard this month and now we are all ready for the half term holiday!

I was really pleased with how I performed and hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves! It was great to see a good turn out. I was overwhelmed by people's generosity and kindness particularly in a time when money is so tight. Thanks to Trev Clarke, Maggie Addison, Elaine Goh, Helen and Vince Gates, The URC, The Simon Family and Angel Delights. Jemma Gates

Semer Airgun Society ran its annual Golden Pellet competition and are pleased to announce that, after a very close fought evening, where two junior members had a total of 41 points each, they had a shoot off to determine the outright winner. This was between Lucy Maskell and Mia Kirk, and on this occasion Lucy Maskell was the victor. Lucy gets to keep the cup for a year and hopefully will defend it next year. Well done Lucy from all at Semer Airgun Society on winning the Golden Pellet. William Dewick, Club Secretary

Gill Joins 5th Womens Cancer Challenge Retired hairdresser Gill Dutton is getting on her bike once again and taking positive action in the fight against breast, ovarian and cervical cancer. Gill 69, is part of an amazing group of women from all walks of life, of all ages and cycling abilities who will be tackling the fifth WOMENvCANCER challenge, ‘Cycle Africa 2015’. This is Gill’s second challenge as two years ago she cycled Cuba for WvC, raising £3,300. In October, the group of approximately 100 women, will cycle 350kms from the base of Kilimanjaro to the Ngorangoro Crater - both on and off road experiencing rural Tanzania, away from the tourist trails and hotspots. It will be a journey full of fun, friendship and incredible support as well as a real challenge. As well as training hard, Gill needs to raise £3000 to support the continued work of Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action, the three biggest killer cancers of women. She is asking local people and businesses to kindly help her achieve her target, and has raised £1,500 so far by putting on small events herself. To pledge your support for Gill, you can either post your donation to ‘WvC (CAF)’ by cheque or make an online donation at: justgiving.com/Gill-Dutton1 Gill would like to thank all the many people who regularly support her and help her to raise funds for WvC. She says’ Cycling is something I enjoy, but doing it for such a worthy cause means so much more to me. Most of us have lost a friend or family member to cancer and as long as I am fit and able I will continue to cycle to raise funds in the hope that one day cancer is eliminated for good. With the help of friends, Gill is putting on a ‘Race Night’ on March 21st at Nayland Village Hall to raise more funds towards her target. Please contact her on gillydutton@btinternet.com for tickets if you would like ‘A fun night at the races’!! Cost is £15 to include a fish and chip supper.

My partner Matthew Thompson was involved in a motorcycle incident during the icy weather at the end of January and came off his bike on the road into Kersey. He passed out and things could have been even more serious if they hadn't found him and got in touch with me. I would like to say a huge thank you to the two women who stopped to help him. I never got their names or contact details as we had to rush off to the hospital, but I am so grateful that they stopped. I know that one of the women was from Milden, but I'm not sure about the other lady. Matthew was in hospital for a couple of days but is now home and on the mend. I can't thank them enough. The past month has been successful for Hadleigh United. Whitton came to the Millfield unbeaten for three months but Hadleigh lowered their colours by three goals to two after a splendid contest. The next match was at Wivenhoe where a two goal victory was the reward for another good performance. Brantham were then beaten by two goals to one at the Millfield before a trip to Kirkley ended with another win by two golas to one after being behind at the interval. The Reserves have had several matches postponed for waterlogged pitches. But a fine display against Woodbridge brought a four goal win for Hadleigh. A match against Brightlingsea Reserves was lost by two goals to one with young Tyler French scoring on his debut for Hadleigh Reserves. Our Thurlow Nunn Youth Team have also had matches called off because of the wet weather. A poor performance at Cornard ended in a surprise defeat by the odd goal of three with French on target for Hadleigh. That was followed by a match against Sudbury at the Millfield where goals from Ollie Dunlop and Sam Sharp gave Hadleigh a magnificent win, again by two goals to one. With two months remaining before the season ends, there is still plenty of excitement to come. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Terry Adams and Ryan Stafford. The Ground Improvement draw was won by Hadleigh Thrift Shop. Both draws were made by Mark Ward of Hadleigh Tyre Group at the Brantham match on February 7th. Terry Adams HADLEIGH UNITED FIXTURES First team fixtures for March begin at Stanway on Tuesday 10th. On Saturday 14th another trip to Essex takes us to Clacton before a home match against Newmarket takes place on Saturday 21st. The month ends at Walsham for what should be a good contest on Saturday 28th. The Reserves go to Stanway on Saturday 7th before entertaining Walsham on Saturday 14th. The return match will take place at Walsham on Saturday 21st before Felixstowe come to the Millfield on Saturday 28th. Our Thurlow Nunn Youth Team are at home to Haverhill on Wednesday 4th. Then an away match at Clacton takes place on Thursday 12th while Long Melford come to the Millfield on Wednesday 18th. A trip to Sudbury follows on Monday 23rd. Any alterations to the above fixtures will be posted on the club website.

Hadleigh Hares - Cross Country Hadleigh Hares were the hosts for the final cross country race of the season around the fields of Holbecks Farm. The junior race was first and Hadleigh’s course was without a doubt the longest, toughest and coldest of the season, with the snow starting to drive in just as the race set off. Congratulations to the seven tough kids who all managed to make it to the finish line. Our juniors were: Ella Bodsworth, Thomas and Lucy Holdaway, Oliver Cross, Noah Jamieson, Freddie Ashmore & Elizabeth Stewart. The junior Hares finished in an excellent 9th position in the final standings. The snow eased off for the Seniors so they had it much easier but the 5 mile course which takes in two assents of Constitution Hill was still one of the more challenging races in the series.

Newton Green is Finger Clicking Good One of the most read golf club web sites in the country is run by Sudbury’s Newton Green Golf Club. The number of club sites in England is into four figures, and one of the leading providers is Club-noticeboard. The golf information firm’s customers run into three figures, and it has confirmed Newton’s site attracts the most traffic. One of the latest features on the site shows an unusual interpretation of golf ball hunting by club member and artist Neil Jacobs. Regular updating and the Sudbury club’s reputation for innovation has made it a popular clicking place for golf followers. Readers have doubled in five years, during which time Newton has been in transformation. It was one of the first in the country to adopt recruitment and retention report guidelines set out by the sport’s governing body in 2009. Peter Philpott, club chairman, said: “There are a hundred and one things a club needs to get right to meet the challenging times the sport is experiencing. This is particularly so at a members’ club, which can provide a collective spirit to move itself forward. “We have this spirt at Newton, and its web site is just one example of pulling things together.” The web site has more than 30 regularly updated pages, and the attached painting shows Neil Jacobs contribution.
