Hadleigh Show Director puts Family up front for this year’s event This year’s Hadleigh Show is on Saturday 18th May and the focus is “Families & Farming”. To demonstrate just how serious she was about making sure that this year’s event really does make families welcome, Show Director Clare Lock had her twins star in the publicity campaign. The two youngsters have a lot to smile about because new to the Showground this year are a number of features which are all about young visitors. Children can jump on board on the “Land Train” with its stopping stages around the showground; take the “Passport Challenge” and get their card stamped at identified locations before returning to the Membership Tent and a chance to win one of 250 goody bags or make their way to the “Childrens Education Area” which will host the fantastic Richard Savoury Sheep Show, the Education Marquee, the animal petting area and some great trade stands with things to interest children Foodies will be pleased to learn that The Food Hall is now bigger with almost a third more food producers showcasing the best of East Anglian produce. These new exhibitors are in addition to 40 new Trade Stands to the now over 120 trade stands and a number of new sponsors. The interest has been phenomenal and it promises to be the busiest Show to date. Ringside entertainment features the Adrenaline Tour - the awesome Quad and Motorcycle Stunt show, starring Jason Smyth; the Flying Fergies – the tractor display team, the agricultural equivalent of the “red arrows”; the East Anglian Fire & Rescue team which light some fires but fortunately are also on hand to put them out; the Young Farmers who battle it out in Tug-O-War and also with some Lawn Mower Racing! ...Continued on page 4

Waterfield House Red Nose Day Fun! On Friday 15th March 2013 Waterfield House residential home celebrated Red Nose Day, by getting both its staff and residents involved in doing something funny for money. Handyman Mark raised sponsorship by sitting in a bath of custard in the reception area and greeting visitors, whilst the Home Manager Karen did a sponsored silence for the morning for which the staff, residents and relatives were so grateful they dug deep into their pockets. The residents made red nose cupcakes with the Activities Co-ordinator Jill, which were then sold in the café to raise yet more money. Both residents and staff also dressed up on the day wearing an item of red clothing, red noses, deely bobbers and masks, before performing their own version of the Harlem Shake along with a little help from the relatives! Waterfield House would like to say a massive thank you to their local Morrison’s Store in Hadleigh, whose management team were kind enough to organise and donate the custard that the Handyman used to bathe in.A big thank you also to everyone that donated money which resulted in an amazing total of approx £154.00, with money still coming in for Comic Relief. Well Done!!!
Hadleigh Helps our Heroes! On Sunday 7th April, the Hadleigh ladies cycling group Birds Wot Bike held our charity fundraising cycle ride. We had an amazing 96 entries, including 2 tandems. Sponsorship is still being collected, but it is anticipated that we will have raised around £2000 for the Help for Heroes charity! Donations can still be made at the George or via www.bmycharity.com/HelenAllan. The committee (pictured with hero bear) are Joy Lowson, Alison Campion, Jo Cunningham, Helen Allan and Katy Ratcliffe, who rode in memory of local Lavenham hero Lance Corporal of Horse Jonathan Woodgate. Jonathan was killed by an insurgent's grenade near Sangin in March 2010. Tony Woodgate (Jonathan's father) also pictured with the bear, was at the start of the ride to see everyone begin the 50k challenge. The committee would like to thank Paul and Tori of the George for their hard work in supporting the event, and donating the post ride food. In addition, thanks go to Partridges for donating charcoal for the BBQ, Spokes mobile cycle service for advice and help on the day, Maggie, Carol and Anita for their help with organisation and Carl Beer for his amazing photography on the day. Congratulations to everyone who took part and completed the ride, especially Boxford Bike Club who fielded an amazing team of 20 plus cyclists, and Sudbury cycle club members who also joined us! We were completely overwhelmed by the turnout, support and fantastic atmosphere everyone contributed towards. Even the weather was in our side for the day! It is planned to make this an annual event, so here's to next year being even bigger and better! Any ladies wanting to cycle with us through the summer - see our facebook page, or email birdswotbike@hotmail.co.uk

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard enjoying tea at The Savoy I was so sad to hear of the death of Margaret Thatcher and dismayed at the behaviour of some in society. Margaret Thatcher was in the unassailable position of being one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century and whether or not one agreed with her policies her death should be handled with respect. I did a lot of work with the Conservative Party in the 1980s and 90s. I met Margaret Thatcher at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1976 when she was Leader of the Opposition and I obtained her autograph. I was also present at the Brighton Conference the day after the dreadful Irish bomb at the Grand Hotel. I have had a busy few weeks. My principal chauffeur, Frank and house keeper, Maria went to Clacton for Easter and as far as I can gather played Canasta for most of the weekend. My junior chauffeur Christof does like the long runs and whisked myself and house guests to Eltham Palace. The Palace was built by the wealthy Courtauld family and is a testament to the 1930s Art Deco period. At the time it was the very essence of chic. What a glamorous world it was. I went to hear the Hadleigh Choral Society’s concert at Snape Maltings; the acoustics there are wonderful. The Society had clearly achieved a high standard and I much enjoyed their rendition of Elgar’s Sea Pictures. John Lill gave a spirited performance of the Beethoven “Emperor” piano concerto. I think though that Vaughan Williams’ “A Sea Symphony” was testing for the Choir and audience alike. My view is that a pleasant light programme would be more in keeping of the occasion. A friend of many years invited me to join a small party for tea at The Savoy. The picture shows me engaged in that activity. The piano played and it was a delightful afternoon albeit that I found the service somewhat perfunctory. We enjoyed a drink in the American Bar, a glance at the drinks menu showed one cocktail at £5,000 for the glass! I ran a Driving Day for a group of my motoring friends. The Ipswich Transport Museum opened especially for us and it was very interesting indeed. My readers may enjoy a visit; the Museum is in Cobham Road which is on the Warren Heath side of Ipswich. There seems to be quite a lot of interest in the housing market at present. If you are thinking of selling or buying then do get in touch so that we can handle the conveyancing process for you. Beware of quotes that you may receive from some conveyancers which have various extras bolted on to the headline fee that is given (such as for completing a Stamp Duty form) Howard Gibbons

Special Edition No.3 Mystery Houses (2013) There are two areas in Hadleigh that have caused problems to historians The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian over the years owing to the lack of readily-available information concerning Mystery Houses their development. Now, their histories have been thoroughly researched and the mysteries solved. The first site to come under scrutiny is the corner of Aldham Road and Lady Lane (at the top of Angel Street), which has been referred to as Hadleigh Monastery for nearly 200 years. Searching both archaeological and documentary evidence for a monastery here has come up with names of owners and occupiers and uses to which the area has been put from the 14th century to the present. The other site under investigation is the western side of Gallows Hill (on the road north out of town), where the area was laid out in the mid-19th century by Ipswich and Suffolk Freehold Land Society (now Ipswich Building Society) for a special scheme. Until 1972, Hadleigh Castle was situated here, causing much confusion over the years with Hadleigh Castle in Essex. The stories of Hadleigh’s Mystery Houses are illustrated throughout with maps, family trees, old picture post-cards and modern photographs. On sale in May at Keith Avis Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £5.00. Sue Andrews Special Edition No.3

Hadleigh Community Playgroup This term our theme is Dragons, Knights and Princesses and the children are looking forward to all the fun activities and also spending time in the garden and seeing all the seeds they planted in the spring grow. We had lots of fun on Red Nose Day the children wore red wigs and we held a cake stall and raised £52. We would like to say a big thank you to the Hadleigh Co-op for donating tubes of smarties for our recent fundraiser – the children enjoyed their chocolate and now have to fill the tubes with money! We are also holding an Open Day on Wednesday 15th May – 9.30 – 11.30. This is a fantastic opportunity for children and parents to visit the play group, talk to the staff and to see what the playgroup can offer. If you are unable to come along to our open day and are interested in your child joining the playgroup, please contact Janet on 01473 827702 or e-mail hadleighcommunityplaygroup@googlemail.com by the end of summer term (23 July 20013).

NEWMARKET NIGHTS Friday 19th July - Madness £57.00 Grandstand, £62.00 Premier (Inc)
Summer term at Beaumont school started with a bang, quite literally! On the first morning back after the Easter break the children were treated to an electricity science workshop laid on by the National Grid and led by mad scientist Professor Kaos! Professor Kaos demonstrated the unique properties and qualities of electricity as well as teaching the children about its inherent dangers. Using specialised scientific equipment Professor Kaos demonstrated static electricity, much to the amusement of the children, as he made children’s hair stand on end! The workshop ended with a representative of the National Grid showing the children all the safety equipment that their workers have to wear. The children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and went home with their own balloons to experiment with! As a continuation of the children’s studies on the environment and habitats Beetle and Spider classes were lucky enough to visit Wolves Wood, a fantastic local resource. We were guided around the wood by two very knowledgeable RSPB wardens who explained to the children how diverse the wildlife was that used the ancient woodland and how specialised some of the creature’s habitats were. The children learned an awful lot from their visit. Our Junior Road Safety Officers Daniel Carrigan and Lewis Cullen have been busy again! In their efforts to increase road safety awareness they have now filmed and edited their own road safety video. The video, which includes many aspects of road safety, has been shown to the children at Beaumont, but it is hoped that it will be shown at other schools and in the wider community. The two boys have done a brilliant job as road safety officers this year, and should be praised for all their efforts. At the end of last term the younger classes Butterflies and Bumble Bees visited Hedingham Castle in Essex, as a culmination to a unit of work on castles. Some of the children dressed up as knights, princes and princesses for the day which comprised a series of demonstration workshops. The children had a brilliant time and coped really well in the sub-zero temperatures! Thank you to the parents we had helping on the day.
Joyce Rolfe Frank, Graham, Pam and Family would like to thank everyone that attended Joyce’s Funeral. Special thanks go to Rev’d Jim Dalgleish, Di Double, Joan Phillips and Elizabeth Meeks who all contributed to an uplifting service. To all who sent messages of condolence and comfort we would assure them that they were greatly appreciated. Thanks to Alyson Tampion who did all the catering and Claire Ford and Janice Moyes for serving and waiting. Also thanks to anyone who made a donation to ‘Dementia UK’, at present the total is unknown. Joyce will be sadly missed by us all. Frank, Graham & Pam

I write this column on a very gloomy looking morning with hope and desperation that the sun will finally emerge! We have been extremely busy in the last two months with an abundance of garden clearances and tree removals. This has obviously left us with a lot of wood! Now is the time to stock up on wood if you buy unseasoned and season it yourself. The summer sun will go a long way in drying the wood out for this year and next years fires. We sell a full load of unseasoned wood for just £80 and this is usually enough to last a winter. If you have any questions regarding wood or if you would like any other work quoting then please get in touch. Fact Of The Month A Sycamore tree has been on this earth for at least 10 million years and each tree can live for a average of 600 years!

The object of the Club is "To promote fellowship amongst retired and semiretired professional and business men". The Club was established in 1998 and has had another successful year. The Club meets for lunch on the third Wednesday of the month at the Eight Bells, Hadleigh. This year sees the end of an era. For all of the 15 years since the Club was founded we have enjoyed the excellent food and wine provided by Linda and Gianni. It is our sincere hope that this good relationship continues with the new management at the Eight Bells. In the meantime the Club wishes good health and happiness to Gianni and Linda in their retirement. Their ladies joined members for the Ladies Lunch last August held in Whatfield Village Hall where we enjoyed an excellent meal provided by Liz Parker. This year we held our customary Annual Dinner at the end of March in the Town Hall Dining Room. A turnout of over 50 members and guests were served a culinary treat by Jam Tartz of Sudbury. The Club occasionally invites guest speakers to give a short talk after lunch. During the year we had three guest speakers: Luke Crawley of Adnams in May, Councillor Mary Munson, the Mayor of Hadleigh, in October and P.C. Matt Paisley this February. The weather was fine for our summer outing last August: an afternoon cruise down the river to Felixstowe and Harwich on the Orwell Lady with tea on board on the way back (this was organised jointly with Hadleigh Rotary Club). The number of members in the Club is limited, mostly by the accommodation available for lunch, but we have room for a few more. Any person interested in joining should, in the first instance, contact the Secretary, Chris Drake, on 01473 822098.

televised episode of the show along with an opportunity to go backstage and meet the panel! Anyone wishing to purchase tickets or indeed make any donations please contact Miss Lesley. Along with the Bildeston show, a new school in the village of Boxford is set to officially open its doors on Saturday, 18th May at Boxford Primary School; all of the children registered attended a recent taster day on Saturday, 27th April and got to experience life at Miss Lesley’s and meet their other classmates. The Bildeston School celebrates its second year on the 17th May – so with the “birth” of the new Boxford School on 18th May – it will be very special time for Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts. Both the Bildeston and Boxford school teach children in class ages 4-5yrs, 68yrs, 9-12yrs and 13+. The Bildeston school runs on a Tuesday and Thursday and the new school in Boxford will run on a Saturday, both during term time only. Miss Lesley recently appeared as a sofa guest on BBC Suffolk Radio's ‘Lesley Dolphin Show’ on May 1st and had a great time chatting about her past as a student and teacher at the famous Italia Conti School in London, her work as an actress, presenter and dancer as well as her current life in Suffolk and of course MLSPA! For further details or to register for either the Bildeston School or the new Boxford School please contact Principal, Miss Lesley on 07957 351941 or email lesley@misslesleysperformingarts.co.uk
Aye Aye Captain! Miss Lesley with Class 4 at dress rehearsal It’s an incredibly busy time at Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts! Currently, the students at Bildeston school are working very hard rehearsing for their forthcoming show “Let Us Entertain You” which takes place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May at Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston. Routines are being set, songs are being sung, costumes are being sourced and sequins sewn and it is sure to be a spectacular show with a couple of extra surprises too! All profits raised from the show go directly to benefit the students in some way. Last time the profits were used to subsidise a theatre trip to Grease and enabled the children to have some wonderful goody bags with lots of treats! MLSPA are organising a raffle at the show which hopes to help with the profits for a future treat and already have some wonderful prizes; Lisa Maxwell, actress, presenter and a good friend of Miss Lesley who is a current host on ITV's show 'Loose Women' has kindly donated tickets to attend a live

Hadleigh agent recognised as a property professional of excellence! Ross Stevenson, a Hadleigh based estate agent with Bychoice has successfully passed an NFoPP Technical Award in the Sale of Residential Property. This wellrespected Award is not only a nationallyrecognised industry qualification but is also an entry requirement of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) – the UK’s leading professional body for estate agents which regulates, guides and assists property sales professionals. Ross, who started his career as a sales negotiator in 2002, has been working as an estate agent in Hadleigh for over 8 years. Because of the long working hours the profession demands, he completed all his study in his own time and passed each of the 4 exams with relative ease. Ross of Bychoice Hadleigh said: “I decided to start studying toward this qualification as a result of encouragement from my company directors, Emma Turner and Richard Gosling. For me, it is not only a personal achievement but evidence of our professionalism as an agency, showing our clients that they are dealing with someone who is knowledgeable and who they can trust to do a good job. Richard Gosling (company director) who works closely with Ross at Bychoice said: “We could not be more proud of Ross’ achievement. We strongly believe the surrounding vendors and buyers of Hadleigh will vote with their feet in support of an agency that is staffed by hard-working property professionals of intelligence and integrity, like Ross. Ross is amongst the steadily growing number of agents across the UK who are working with NAEA and the NFoPP to become qualified and raise the standards within their field. Elizabeth Richards, Head of Legal and Policy at the National Federation of Property Professionals states: “I heartily congratulate Ross Stevenson on his achievement and welcome him to full NAEA membership. In an industry where standards can vary greatly between member and non-member agents and agencies, obtaining this Award represents not only Ross’ dedication to developing as an agent but also his commitment to working to the high industry standards which the NAEA seeks to promote. Looking forward, Ross has started his studying towards the NFoPP Technical Award in Residential Lettings. Again, this well respected Award in not only a nationally-recognised industry qualification but also an entry requirement of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA). If you have any questions regarding sales or lettings you can contact Ross and his team at their George Street, Hadleigh office on 01473 828280.

Summer Concert June 2nd, 6.30 pm at Polstead Church Please note the date now – it is a week earlier than usual. We have an interesting programme prepared. Our main work will be Beethoven’s Egmont Overture - it is a very dramatic work which gives the brass a chance to show off – and there is an interesting story behind this music which our conductor will probably tell on the day. Another dramatic work, by local composer Kevin Bates, will feature the last hanging to take place in Hadleigh in 1735 at Gallows Hill. The concert will also include three always popular works: Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 (‘Land of hope and glory’), a selection from Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. We are sure you will also enjoy the other works included in the programme, timed to last a little over an hour. As usual, we do not make a charge for entrance, but ask you to make a donation as you leave. This helps to cover the cost of the concert and also enables us to make a donation to Polstead Church. We welcome everybody to this concert and are sure you will appreciate the music which the orchestra has spent rehearsing this year. We are very grateful once again to the Church authorities for agreeing to host this concert and also for the tea which we always enjoy between the afternoon rehearsal and the concert. BBC Presenter to host Hearing Care Centre Annual Quiz Karen Finch from local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, will again be trading her audiology role for one of a Quiz Master, to help raise money for charity. Together with the help of BBC Radio Suffolk Presenter, Mark Murphy, the two will be raising muchneeded funds for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. The quiz night will take place on Sunday 19th May 2013 (7.00pm) at Greshams Sports Club, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich and your support is needed to make it a fantastic night. Karen Finch MD of The Hearing Care Centre, based on Upper Brook Street, Ipswich said “Our quiz nights are always brilliant fun and every event has been a sellout with over 200 people attending each time. Book your tickets quick so you are not disappointed!” This will be the company’s fifth annual trivia fundraiser with over £6000 having been raised across all the previous events. Teams for the quiz can include between 4 - 6 members. Entry is £4.00pp (nibbles included), and there big cash prizes up for grabs for the winning team! Hearing dogs change lives. They alert their deaf owners to sounds we take for granted, providing greater independence, confidence and security. Most are selected from rescue centres or donated as unwanted pets. It costs over £5,000 to train and keep one hearing dog for its working life. The Hearing Care Centre is raising money to sponsor their new Hearing Dog puppy and follow its progress through its training and to eventually be placed with a deaf owner. The company is also looking for local companies to donate prizes for their bumper prize draw and auction, in return for exposure, prior to, and at the event. To purchase tickets call Matthew at The Hearing Care Centre on 01473 230330 or buy online at www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/quiz.

THE HADLEIGH SOCIETY Caring about Hadleigh, yesterday, today and tomorrow Another month has passed and we still do not have a date (at the time of writing this) for the Babergh Members to meet and make their decision on the Tesco application. The Hadleigh Society and Hands Off Hadleigh group however have not been asleep, and continue to read every document that becomes public knowledge from Tesco and Babergh. Of course we hoped when we read that Tesco were retrenching on some of their proposed new stores that we would be amongst them but unfortunately Tesco have made it clear, and Babergh have confirmed, that they are still going ahead with the application to build in Hadleigh. Hands off Hadleigh members have thoroughly dissected the latest Tesco Retail Assessment and the ‘Independent’ critique of that document produced for Babergh. Tesco still insist that they will improve the shopping experience in our High Street by bringing in more people, but also accept that their arrival could cause the closure of one or two independent shops and the Co-op. Our own examination of the Tesco documents using their population predictions show that if the 17,000 population of Hadleigh and surrounding villages do 90% of their shopping within the Town Morrisons and Tesco we will need to spend between another 7 to 13 million pounds to make the stores viable. (If anyone reading this knows where to find that extra income I would be delighted to help them spend it.) I understand that the Chamber of Commerce are having another, and truly independent, retail assessment and traffic assessment produced which hopefully we will see the results of soon. We, however, have been able with local residents financial help, to take legal advice on the situation which obviously has greatly changed with the arrival of Morrisons. At the meeting in 2011 when the last Tesco application was refused we were concerned that Councillors were not permitted to refuse the application on retail and traffic grounds on the advice of the Babergh Officers. It also became quite clear to us that our objections to the application were not considered too seriously as we are not professionals in the planning field. As I reported a few months ago we have been able to present a response on the retail situation from Professor Hallworth, whose professional credentials can not be doubted and we have also been able to appoint a Barrister to represent us. Mr Paul Stinchcombe, Q.C. has been a Barrister for a number of years but with a break in service having been a Member of Parliament. He has agreed to represent our cause and his ‘Opinion’ has now been sent to the Babergh Planning Department. Whilst the document is some 19 pages long I will report some of the findings, without going into the fine detail. However if any one wants to see the whole document please contact me, there is nothing secret in it. Mr Stinchcombe starts by stating:- I have been asked to advise in respect of a planning application made by Tesco Stores Ltd to Babergh District Council for a 2,500m2 Class A1 retail supermarket, and associated development, at the Brett Works site in Hadleigh, Suffolk. I set out in greater detail below in the Opinion why, in the light of the recent publication of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and the recent development of a Morrison’s food store on the site of the former Buy Right Store in Hadleigh, the Council is in danger of acting unlawfully in its consideration of the planning application through failing properly to apply paragraph 14 of the NPPF 2012 in respect of a Local Plan which, the Council has independently been advised, in now rendered “out-of-date” with regards to the application site by reason of the recent development of the Morrison’s food store. The document continues to describe the various reasons why the District Plan is out of date and how the NPPF 2012 instructs on procedure if this is so. With the previously identified need for a supermarket on the Riverside site no longer being in existence the NPPF shows that the site must be looked at with respect to the retail impact on the Town, but also with regard to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area and the setting of Listed Buildings. When the date for the Babergh Councillors to hear the evidence and make their decision is set we hope that both Professor Hallworth and Mr Stinchcombe will be available to speak on our behalf at the meeting. However when the meeting takes place will partially depend on Babergh and Tesco’s requiring time to respond to Mr Stinchcombe’s document and the Chamber of Commerce’s reports on the Retail and Traffic situation. In the mean time it looks as though ‘spring has at last sprung’ and we can continue to enjoy the riverside walk looking across the river at the meadow land and not at a large car park and listen to bird song and not car engines and we still have independent shops in our High Street that we can enjoy shopping in. ....We ask the Questions! This month we put questions to.......
Brian Riley Babergh District Councillor Where did you go to school Brian? St Mary & St Michael’s in Stepney. I was orphaned when less than a year old and went to live with my grandmother. Although born in West Ham I was baptised at the Catholic church in Commercial Road, Stepney. Consequently I was tracked down by the nuns and my grandmother was persuaded to enrol me in their school. From there I went to St. Joseph’s Academy in Blackheath. This was run by the De La Salle Brothers who had the education of poor bright pupils as part of their pastoral mission. Some people say that being educated by the Sisters of Mercy (think Blues Brothers) and the Christian Brothers explains everything about me. Tell us about your first ever job? I was a Communications Clerk in the Telex Department of the Bank of China in Leadenhall Street. (I still cannot touch type!). I then moved across to handling import documentation. I left them after four years to work with a company importing marble and turning out headstones, fireplaces and whatever people required. I found living and working locally too restrictive and after a year or so I returned to the City to work for Standard Bank Ltd (later Standard Chartered Bank) in their Commercial Service/Business Development Department. I then began what was to be the pattern of my life rarely staying in one position for more than two years. I was the first non graduate in their Corporate Development Department where we expanded the bank by buying into other banks or businesses (such as leasing). How did you end up working overseas? In 1978 I landed a transfer to Hong Kong where my job was to turn Diners Club Hong Kong into a profitable operation. Within two years the business paid dividends in excess of a previous rights issue. My deployment was an unwritten requirement of the bank putting up the rights monies and relieving the other shareholders of some of their obligations. Thereafter I began to learn operational banking the hard way and achieved my first Branch Managership in Salalah, Oman. In 1990 I was sent to Uganda and began a relationship with that country which covered thirteen years - ending as General Manager for Business Development & Operations of a major development finance company. Somewhere in between I was a (private) school bursar and a Bank Chief Inspector in Bulgaria. What do you consider your successes in life? Working in Bulgaria where I powered the strategy to head off a run on the bank. In Uganda where I was a leading member of the team took a bank which was sixteenth out of seventeen in size to number nine within two years at the same time generating annual after tax profits of £1million a year.
the other is a journalist broadcaster with Sky Sports News. In the late nineties I reconnected with my late mother’s siblings after fifty years and discovered (and met) new cousins in New York and British Columbia. I know that you and Alice breed championship dogs, how did this come about? Alice is really the dog person in our family having grown up with a succession of working breeds in her native California. As a married couple we first had dogs in our life when I was working in Oman and we looked after a Shih Tzu belonging to the Sultan's kennels. When I was transferred to Hong Kong we were asked to look after a Tibetan Spaniel whose owners were moving back to the UK. When Alice returned to the UK with daughter Kate while I was posted to Brunei, Alice decided that she would like to have another Tibetan Spaniel. After that, it was dog shows, first local ones and then around the country, breed judging and, finally, breeding the first litter. Alice has bred a few puppies, including some which went on to become Champions, and her judging appointments have taken us around the UK and to Finland and Norway. Alice is the Secretary of the local Tibetan Spaniel club and I assist the club by auditing the accounts. What do you like to do to relax? I meet, eat and relax with friends (which accounts for my waistline). Apart from your legendary talking ability, how would you like to be remembered! Arnold Bennett’s book “The Card” chronicles the rise of Edward Henry ("Denry") Machin from washerwoman's son to Mayor of Bursley. This is accomplished through luck, initiative and a fair bit of cheek. The book concludes with the question “What great cause is he identified with?" "He's identified," said the speaker, "with the great cause of cheering us all up”. That’s how I would like to be remembered – “He made life interesting, he made a difference and he cheered us up!” Thank you Brian, I believe you also standing in the forthcoming County Council elections, now David’s retired you’ll get my vote! - keep up the good work! Kelvin

How did you end up living in Hadleigh? In my life things have tended to find me. Our house in Woodbridge became too constrained for the way we wanted to live and we started looking for something larger. Hadleigh met all of our criteria and we fell in love with the house, the town and the people. Why did you seek election as a Babergh Distrct Councillor? I was incredibly irritated by the Council’s inept way of dealing with the car parking issue. I measured myself on competence, effectiveness and trust and thought I could do better than the existing councillors. Very sadly Jim Quinlan passed away and that meant I had the opportunity to run in Hadleigh North without a full set of incumbent opposition. I was amazed to come top of the poll! What, so far, have been the highlights of your life? Getting married (twice). My first wife died and I met and married Alice in Hong Kong. I have daughters from both marriages. One is a Senior Lecturer at Aberystwyth University and

Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org, where you can download a Welcome Booklet. However, if you do not have a computer and printer and would prefer a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940.
Parish Council Below are the main matters of business dealt with at the meeting of the 27 March 2013: • Neighbourhood Watch. Joanna Moore, the new Community Watch Liaison Officer, had attended the meeting, along with Brian Smith and Dusty Miller, two of Layham’s Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators. The Parish Council was keen to recruit two more Coordinators in Upper Layham. • Rally in Lower Layham. Following the rally organised by the Chelmsford Motor Club last month, the Parish Clerk had written to the Club requesting them to notify her of any future rallies. The Club had confirmed that they had asked the RAC Motor Sports Association, the body responsible for appointing local route liaison officers, to inform her of any future events passing through the village. • Bushes overhanging pavement between Layham and Hadleigh. The Council continues to lobby for these to be removed in the interests of safety for pedestrians. • Clerk’s Annual Review. It was agreed to increase the Clerk’s hours from 25 to 30 per month as she has taken on the role of Finance Officer in addition to her work as Clerk. • Emergency Planning. Improvements in the Churchyard and the Burial Ground During the last month a new seat has been purchased and installed in the Burial Ground. It replaces the seat bought by the village at the time of the Coronation of King George VI (1937) which was stolen last year. The new seat has been made possible by a grant of £428 from the Locality Fund awarded by our Suffolk County Councillor – David Yorke-Edwards, for which the PCC is very grateful. Richard Groom has made sure that it would be very difficult for thieves to steal this new seat. 22

Holloways or sunken lanes The Anglo Saxon words ‘hola weg’ mean a ‘sunken road’. It is a route that centuries of use has eroded down through the topsoil – so much so that it is recessed beneath the level of the surrounding land. Most will have started out as drove roads or paths to market or connecting different small communities. These sunken roads tell a story of habit – trodden by innumerable feet, cut by countless wheels – they are the record of journeys. They are the consequence of tradition and repeated action. The passage of cartwheels, hooves and feet wore away at the floor of these roads, grooving ruts and displacing soil. As the roads deepened they became natural waterways as rain drained into them. Those on a slope became temporary rivers, sluicing away at the loose debris and cutting the road still further below the fields and meadows. There are several such lanes to be found in our Parish of Layham. One that has been surfaced and is used for motor traffic now is Overbury Hall Road as it rises up past Overbury Hall. A most attractive and atmospheric ‘holloway’ is on the footpath that runs up from Bullocky Fen to Rand’s Farm. A walker taking this route is 6 to 8 feet below the surrounding land. One’s head is level with the exposed roots of overgrown hedging plants and trees. Here you can sense the passing of animals, carts and human feet. Local History Recorder There was no response to the appeal in last month’s ‘Letter from Layham’ for a person or persons to take on the role of Local History Recorder. It is a very interesting role – particularly suited to someone who gets about the village and likes talking to people. The idea is to keep a record of anything that happens in Layham on a week
by week basis – taking photographs (or arranging for photographs to be taken) and recording facts. To some extent this happens already through the Community News. On this page there are several small accounts which give a feel for what happens in the village – a Curry Night, a new seat in the burial ground, repairs to tombs, police advice on security, the Layham Social Club. All of this and more should be left for future generations. It is possible for one person to do this or for a small team of volunteers to help out when they can. If you would like to discuss the idea in greater detail (no obligation) please contact Jane Cryer, Clerk to Layham Parish Council on: layhampc@googlemail.com

Second Community Lunch Wednesday 17 April saw 24 people sitting down in the Queen’s Head for a remarkable value two course lunch + coffee for just £5. Steve and Tanith Laing provided the kitchen and Tanith did much of the cooking. The ‘scullery maids’ and ‘waitresses’ were Sonia Groom, Sue Curran and Jane Cryer. These volunteers have provided another opportunity for village people to get together and enjoy each other’s company. Thank you to them all.
Layham Playgroup Easter Fun Welcome back to Layham Playgroup to all the children and a special welcome to the new children who have joined us. We are looking forward to a busy and fun Summer Term, where we will be thinking about spring time, farms and different types of vehicles. At the end of last term the children enjoyed lots of Easter celebrations. We were involved in lots of craft activities, and even braved the snow and cold for an Easter egg hunt down the lane. The children enjoyed finding some paper eggs which they then swapped for a chocolate one once back inside! New garden We are all looking forward to playing in our new garden which is in the process of being transformed. We have a new play house and patio area, and the children will soon be involved in planting flowers, plants and seeds and caring for them. Thank you to everyone involved in transforming our outside area. Trip to Hollow Trees Farm We have organised a trip to the farm on Thursday 2nd May to link in with our topic of vehicles and growing. The children and adults are all very excited and we will report back about our day next month. Our Ladybirds sessions take place every Wednesday from 9.30am-11.00am, please come and join us for lots of fun and friendly faces. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk
Hadleigh Evening WI At the April 2013 meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI the speaker David Smith and his wife Sheila told us about their work as Branch Co-ordinator and secretary of the Ipswich branch of Cat Protection. Now a national organisation, it was started in 1927 by two ladies in London’s East End who fed the local wild and stray cats. They were accompanied by Nelson a black cat whom they had hand reared. Once out of his travel cage after a tour sniffing round the seminar suite Nelson soon made himself at home, greeting members individually. David showed a number of photos of the cats in their care. If needed cats receive veterinary treatment. After careful checks the majority are re homed into a suitable environment. They never put a healthy cat down. David and Sheila judged the competition ‘a picture of a cat’ won by Rae Stapleton. We are all working hard to ensure that our tent at the Hadleigh Show on 18 May will be well worth a visit. We will be joined by members from Bures, Boxford and Leavenheath. Also helping will be our new members including Sophie Rickards who reported on an induction meeting they enjoyed at County headquarters in Bury St Edmunds. Please come and see us. You will be most welcome. Next month’s meeting will be held on 21 May starting 7.30pm. We will be joining Elmsett WI at their village hall where we will be discussing this year’s resolution about the decline of our High Streets and its effects on local communities. This will be debated at the WIs National Federation meeting to be held at the Motorpoint arena in Cardiff on 1 June. Philippa Carruthers 01473 823057

DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST All Councillors declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Accounts for Payment as they are all trustees of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity which was receiving a grant. MINUTESThe Minutes of the Meeting of the Town Council held on the 21st February 2013 were confirmed and signed. MATTERS ARISING Councillor Lazenby asked if a response had been received to the letter sent to Babergh District Council’s Chief Exec on the precept and was advised, again, that none had been received. He, therefore, asked the Clerk to write again requesting a reply. At this point the meeting was adjourned to allow the member of the public to speak on the Jubilee Beacon. POLICING PC Matt Paisley presented the Police Report for February. It was noted that 14 crimes had been recorded. The offences comprised as follows: 6 criminal damage; 5 thefts; 1 driving motor vehicle with excess alcohol; 1 burglary and 1 attempted burglary. Of these 1 had been detected. Councillor Riley had tendered his apologies but had provided a written report. It was agreed that a letter be sent to the Economic Development Officer expressing Hadleigh Town Council’s displeasure and disappointment that Hadleigh is not mentioned in the Suffolk Town & Country Holiday Guide 2013 which has been produced by a partnership of Mid-Suffolk, Babergh and Forest Heath District Councils and St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich Borough Councils. As other organisations in the town are working to improve tourism in the town the omission was felt unacceptable. Councillor Riley had been given a copy of the leaflets that are produced by the Town Council to pass on to the Officer. Councillor M. Munson had provided a written report and spoke on the meeting held with representatives from the East of England Ambulance Service. The meeting was being re-arranged in order that the correct representatives could attend and to include hospital representatives. It was felt that the Minister of State must be made aware and MP’s representing health would be invited to attend the next meeting.

REPORT OF THE COUNTY COUNCILLOR Councillor Grutchfield presented a written report and made specific reference to the Full Council meeting he had attended and the free school meal system. Councillor Cook, on behalf of Hadleigh Town Council and staff, thanked Councillor Grutchfield for his services as County Councillor. Councillor Cook reported on the County’s plan to centralise the archives. The problem with the suggestion of locating this facility in the dockside by Suffolk College was that there was insufficient parking in this area. She asked if Suffolk County Council could reconsider the siting of the facility near to car parks or on public transport routes making access for the public easier. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor was in receipt of the Tenants’ News Magazine which contained details of the Welfare Reform Road Shows. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £30,314.88 be approved for payment. Questions were raised over the payment for emptying dog bins. The Clerk was asked to include this on the next Planning Committee Agenda. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Committee held on the 14th March 2013 were noted. TOWN MATTERS Councillor Cook reported on a press release regarding East House and spoke on Babergh District Council’s decision to withdraw the current application. It was noted that there will be a public exhibition of any future plans Babergh may submit for East House. She asked the District Councillors if they could find out how much this application had cost to submit. Councillor Grutchfield advised that he had already asked financial questions pertaining to East House with the Planning Department. Councillor Cook advised Councillors about a local playwright who has been given an Arts Council Grant to write a play capturing contemporary life in Hadleigh and would like input from local residents. To this end he had provided Councillor Cook with a questionnaire which was handed out to Councillors for them to contact the playwright direct with their input. Limited removal of hedgerows and trees Refusal was recommended (Voting was unanimous). The following reasons were for refusal was given: i) Hadleigh Town Council found it difficult to comment on the detail of this proposal as the Tree Wardens were unable to access the site due to the fact that much of it is under private ownership and would therefore have committed trespass. ii) Serious concerns about whether the removal of all the trees is necessary as it appears that some are only being removed as they are in the way of proposed parking spaces iii) Proposing to carry out this work during the nesting season the Committee do not feel that the safe guards expressed in paragraph 6.3.3 of the “Reptile and Bat Survey” are sufficient and also in 6.3.1 where it states that there should be minimal disruption to the bat foraging habitat should be taken into account iv) There is no reason for this work to be completed until the planning application has been resolved v) Given the current problems with diseased Ash trees if a healthy tree is surviving this should be retained. Out of The Frying Pan The good news this month is that the High Street is showing economic green shoots. Recently Weavers Spice (one of Hadleigh’s Indian restaurants) closed. In a few weeks time it will open under new management (and business ownership) as Tessitori (Italian for Weavers) as a wine bar/pizzeria. May should also see the re-opening of The Ram. Let’s wish them both every success. Last month I inadvertently included a photograph of the gateway to the field alongside St. Mary’s school. The field is owned by Suffolk County Council for the school. It has been in the County Council’s ownership since the 1960s. The field is open to the public out of school hours (evenings, weekends and holidays). The pedestrian gates are always left unlocked, other than in exceptional circumstances, such as when the playgrounds are being resurfaced. (The double gates are always locked unless the County Council Grounds team are mowing the grass). It is very uncommon for schools not to have a fence around their land. This is for obvious safety reasons and I have some sympathy for the school in the way in which dogs foul the grounds. However, none of this moves us from the point that some time in the past, land which was part of Cock’s (Cox’s) Park was transferred from the town to the County for the school and we need to be vigilant that in future (for whatever reasons) green space is not given up without the full consent of the people. Meanwhile I enclose a photograph of the vacant piece of land in Lady Lane (just up from The Green) to be transferred to a Registered Provider (of Social Housing) so that a four bedroom house be built possibly with a capital contribution from the Council. I’m still pursuing an explanation as to why housing policies are being ignored and what are the financial implications of Babergh’s decision.

Headteacher’s intro We have had a very busy and successful term over the last 4 months. Our Year 11 pupils are in the final stages of preparing for their pubic examinations and our younger pupils have been participating in a very wide range of extra-curricular activities, trips and visits. Opportunities to work in alternative environments, and with different people, are crucial in pupils developing the personal and social adaptability and flexibility which will allow them to succeed as adults through gaining confidence, independence and resilience. In addition, many memories are retained for an extended period of time as pupils also gain a great deal of enjoyment from the experience!
Music Mania There is much excitement and anticipation for Music Week. Students will perform and compete in a range of activities. Each House has been challenged to produce a band which must include a member from each year group as well as a member of staff. They will then take part in ‘Battle of the Bands’ in front of an impartial judge who has yet to be named!
the freezing temperature, which included seeing historic sites such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag Building, the German Cathedral, Berlin Cathedral and many of the war memorials. In the afternoon we visited the Topography of Terror, which was an exhibition looking at how the Gestapo and the SS used fear and the threat of concentration camps to control the lives of the German population. After that we went up the TV Tower, the tallest structure in Europe. We spent a while on the platform, which was 203 meters above the ground, giving us a fantastic view of Berlin. Later in the evening, we were given a guided toured round the Reichstag which has been Germany’s parliamentary building from 1894 to 1933 and then from 1999 onwards. The building not only had the offices of important German political figures, including Mrs Merkel, but was also full of culture and art from different nations within Europe. Our tour featured a small exhibition on the Reichstag Fire of 1933 and the seat of the German Bundestag, a room that was lit with mirrors that formed a dome on the roof. Once the tour had finished we were able to climb the steps around the glass dome, enabling us to absorb the city at night. On the Tuesday we spent the majority of the day at the Wannsee Conference Memorial House. The Wannsee Conference was held on January 20th, 1942, and is seen as the meeting where the so-called 'Final Solution' was decided on. The house is now full of information about the lead up to the ‘Final Solution’, and the social impact it had on life in Germany. We found the visit moving, considering the importance of the house in Nazi Germany. Later, we dined at the Hard Rock Cafe, and visited the gift shop there. As our flight wasn’t until the afternoon, we spent the morning of our final day at the DDR Museum, an interactive museum dedicated to showing what life was like in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It was interesting to see how communism affected people’s everyday lives, and how it helped Germany to recover from the war. The trip was not only really interesting and helpful towards our GCSE studies, but was also a lot of fun. The students would like to offer a massive thank you to Miss Beach, Mr Day and Mrs Holmes, for taking the time to organise the trip and giving us the opportunity to go. (Written by Harriet Dulake 10A)

Year 10’s Embark on Berlin On the Sunday 24th March, 24 History and German students, accompanied by Miss Beech, Mr Day and Mrs Holmes, boarded a plane to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. The aim of the trip was to increase the confidence of GCSE German students’ speaking abilities, and for those studying GCSE History to gain contextual and cultural knowledge of Germany between the World Wars. We started on Monday by having a guided walking of Berlin, despite 28

25 kilometres over two days, although some groups ended up walking further than originally planned! Duke of Edinburgh develops essential skills such as teamwork and cooperation, and also gives pupils the chance to learn new abilities such as orienteering and basic survival skills. The pupils faced several challenges over the two days, most notably the contrasting weather in the first day- sun, rain and hail!

A prize will be awarded to the design judged to be the best for the Town Team and the winning logo will be published in the Hadleigh Community News. What really makes Hadleigh and what is missing? A short questionnaire will be available for you to complete in the tent. Tell us what you love about Hadleigh. What makes Hadleigh stand out from the crowd? What’s missing from the Town Centre? Have you been “on a diet/watching your weight/being good/trying to be healthy…” on and off all your life…? Do you lurch from one latest fad to another? It really can’t be good for us in the long-term. Statistically, the number of people maintaining their weight loss long term is pretty low. Research has shown that it doesn’t matter which method you use to lose your weight, you are very likely to put it back on if you don’t change your old (bad) habits – for good! If you slip back into those old habits it’s all too easy to regain some, if not all that you lost. And so the whole cycle starts all over again! The proverbial yo-yo dieter. It can’t be the diet’s fault - you’re not dieting at the time! It can only be because you are consuming more calories than you are using. A simple equation of input versus output! Not rocket science…!! So, we have to make a real effort to understand exactly what, and especially, how much, our bodies need to remain at that healthy weight you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Why do we throw away all that hard work when we “come off” the diet? Surely our bodies deserve to be treated better than that. Of course we are all human and there are times when we relax the rules (holidays, Christmas etc.). That’s fine as long as you get back to eating carefully as soon as those events are over. Eventually it will become second nature to choose wisely, just as it used to be second nature to have dessert even though you were really full. If you would like individual help with a weight problem, Val Lord has been an accredited Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant for 4 years and can be contacted on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645. Fidelis Ladies at the Van Dal Factory Outlet If The Shoe Fits: Norwich based, Van Dal is one of the few remaining shoe companies to manufacture in Britain. Taking advantage of its location, the Fidelis group hired a Felix coach and left Hadleigh early one morning to visit the Van Dal factory. The inconspicuous building, tucked away from the town centre, gave no hint of the industry taking place inside. Surrounded by hundreds of pairs of shoes, Customer Service Manager, Gemma Frost, welcomed the group to Van Dals’ factory and retail outlet. What an encouraging start to the tour. A brief but interesting video & talk gave the ladies some background information about the company, the various stages in shoe making together with details of an innovative water resistant finish known as ‘ionmask’. Members then split into two smaller groups each with a guide. The factory tour started with cutting the leather and ended with the boxing of the finished product. None of the group will ever feel the same about their shoes after this fascinating insight into the amount of skill, hard work and care involved in the production of one shoe. The factory visit ended where it had begun in their outlet shop. As an additional incentive Van Dal gave all tour members a discount. As if……….. The group then continued on to the Highway Garden Centre for a rather substantial lunch. It was tempting to hunt out the sun loungers after that, but decorum prevailed and the ladies ended their outing browsing round the almost plant-free garden centre. Birdsong: The horrors of WW1 and the desolation of lost love were deeply felt when the Original Theatre Company brought Rachel Wagstaff’s stage version of Sebastian Faulks’ novel, Birdsong, to the New Wolsey Theatre. Many of the members of this exceptionally talented company played several parts with skill and conviction. The authentic set, sound and lighting re-created the battlefields of France where most of the drama takes place. Flashbacks were handled deftly and seamlessly. Everyone in the Fidelis group was moved by this powerful portrayal of love, courage and endurance of the human spirit. 21st Century Belong to China: A fitting title for Josie Stephenson’s talk as she is well qualified to support the statement from all angles. As an exjournalist and frequent visitor, Josie has had firsthand experience of this massive country, its history, culture and rapid progress. With a population of 1,354,040,000(Dec 2012) all statistics relating to the nation are mind blowing as is their quiet, gradual global dominance of fishing, logging and mineral rights. A most informative, interesting talk which was punctuated with travel anecdotes and Josie’s views on China’s future role in world affairs. As Josie is resolutely battling against ovarian cancer, the club donation and on the spot collection, totalling £110, will go to the Oncology Research Fund at Colchester Hospital. Jan Devey

Too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter? Conservatory makeovers are becoming increasingly popular due to this familiar problem, which you hear repeated time and time again by people who have redundant conservatories attached to their homes. Many of these conservatories were designed without due consideration for insulation, sound and light. Well not anymore. Technology has come to the rescue with the development of new glass options to improve insulation and cleaning, and roof systems that have evolved to add style and design to old tired looking conservatories. You will be amazed at what can be achieved, and the light that can be released back into your property once old translucent materials are upgraded, not to mention the end of the annoying sound that echoes through your home when it rains. By removing the frames and the roof of your existing conservatory, you are left with a blank canvas on which you can alter brickwork to design an orangery or similar with perimeter spot lights inside and increased wall space. You can completely transform a once unused space into a room that really can be used all year round. New design ideas can be combined with the latest thermally efficient products totally changing the appearance and usage of your conservatory. The upgrades available in roof glazing alone, is worth serious consideration, as some of the older polycarbonate roof sheets make efficient heat retention all but impossible. The greater majority of people are still not aware that Conservatory roof development has made it possible to add height to low lean-to conservatories, giving a room a feeling of space and light. This is achieved by the use of a box gutter which is a tried and tested method allowing a roof to hip up from a single storey building. This achieves one of the most stunning conservatory transformations as the interior roof height alone creates a feature. If changes are carried out within the parameters set out by building control no permissions are normally required. However, Hadleigh Glass offers a full advice service to customers covering all these matters. Bi-Folding doors can also add a new dimension to a conservatory with a range of opening options which can be designed to complement your conservatory. You can choose a traditional white or woodgrain frame, one of the new pastel colours, or indeed green or grey, which are now available in both Aluminium and uPVC . At Hadleigh Glass we fully appreciate the importance of design, style and the difference it can make to the appearance and value of your property. We take pride in transforming that glass box into something special and offer free home design visits by one of our consultants without any of the undesirable sales practices you hear about. The increased use of wood burners as a form of heating in Conservatories is also now a real consideration. Floor finishes, conservatory furniture and blinds, have all also come a long way, and reflect the desire the industry has to reintroduce the public to a lifestyle purchase that delivers all year round. At the beginning of March, Hadleigh Glass opened a new showroom facility on St Augustine’s roundabout, Felixstowe Road in Ipswich showing a
comprehensive range of energy efficient windows and doors. Phase two of the new Hadleigh Glass showroom will be complete by the end of May and has been designed to display all aspects of modern conservatories along with BiFolding, French and Patio Doors.
Come and see what’s possible, we think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Thank you to our Worship visitors last month, Reverend Jim Dalgleish and David and Wendy Atkins. Reverend Jim helped the children to learn about forgiveness, our worship theme last half term. David and Wendy talked to the children about the Easter story and ways people celebrate Easter. Throughout the last week of term, children participated in a variety of activities about Holy Week and Easter and some of their work is displayed at St Mary’s Church. Also, we enjoyed our annual Easter service at St Mary’s Church. Thank you to all those who contributed and helped to organise the service. We were especially grateful to Chris Hutton, who helped with the music, and to Reverend Martin Thrower, who gave a talk about the important signs and symbols that relate to Easter. It was lovely to see so many parents attending the celebration assembly at the end of term. This was an opportunity to celebrate the children’s achievements, demonstrating their talents and sharing awards from out of school. Children brought in badges, medals, certificates and trophies, showing their accomplishments in swimming, team sports, dance, music and much more. Every week, children receive certificates for demonstrating our Christian Values; producing good work; and Building Learning Power (a scheme to improve the children’s learning behaviour). Well done to all the children for their hard work last term. As part of our Olympic legacy, we are promoting healthy living and trying to improve the children’s physical activity at lunchtimes. There are new activity zones outside, in which the children can use lots of new equipment and playtime toys. Also, the whole school has been participating in ‘Wake & Shake’ dances at the end of lunchtimes before returning to the classrooms. This helps to focus their energy and prepare them for working hard! The children from Oak and Elm classes hadve enjoyed a trip to Piper’s Vale Gymnastics centre to practise their balance and control, making use of the fantastic facilities there. Also the children really enjoyed watching the Captain Carrot show after the Easter break, which was all about the importance of eating healthily. The following newspaper report was written by Maisie from Beech class. Captain Carrot’s here! Today Captain Carrot has come to St. Mary’s. He was amazing! The show was all about a carrot who saves the day to get rid of the fatty food and Baron Von Burger (Captain Carrot’s worst enemy!). So it’s all about healthy eating and a treat for the launch of the new playground zones. All the different vegetables and about them! So first is the carrot that makes you see in the dark! Then the spuds that are very healthy for you. The peas are one of your greens that are very healthy for you! Last but not least the sweet corn that you can put on the bbq and eat off the cob! Parts of the show! Captain Carrot warns all the super vegetables including his super granny (the sweet corn) that they are in danger of being eaten by the fatty burger (Baron Von Burger). This man called Simon read the peas a book to send them to sleep! The peas really want to see the snow so Simon makes fake snow for them. At the end Captain Carrot saves the day with the help of his girl friend, Red Onion! What Simon and the vegetables say you should do! Simon and the vegetables say you should eat at least five portions of fruit or veg a day! They say that it is important to eat fruit or veg and not as much food with fat in! The children at St Mary’s are now looking forward to the new playground zones! Congratulations to Mrs Ratcliffe and her friends, who completed a 50 kilometre cycle ride for charity during the Easter holidays. They were joined by 96 cyclists on a journey through the beautiful villages around Hadleigh. The day was a great success, raising almost £2000 for Help for Heroes. Look out for more cycling next year as this is due to become an annual event!
Ticking The Box ‘Terms and conditions apply’. So many of us plough ahead when we enter a competition, apply for something online or download software, ticking the box to confirm our agreement to terms and conditions which we never bother to read. There’s a similar situation with will writing, and I think of one clause in particular which I include in many of the more detailed wills which I write. I tell clients ‘its a technical clause which negates some of the more onerous bits of the Trustee Act (aimed at professional trustees) so that you don’t have to worry’. One of my smart lady clients said to me the other day ‘tell me more about this technical clause’. So I thought, I’ll tell her and tell my readers as well. Its quite hard going, but once you have read it, you can tick that box. Will making may sound a bit dull, but the law governing the destination of people’s assets when they die is topical and useful. Will making is smart because it is a hugely cost-effective way of directing who inherits your assets when you go. It is also an absolute necessity for unmarried couples (particularly those with young children) to avoid the very worst case of the mother dying, the home going to a disliked relative under the intestacy laws making the surviving partner homeless, with the children left to the mercies of the local authorities. Taking precautions to avoid this scenario, straight out of Charles Dickens, is so affordable these days (particularly with the Will Business when our home visit service means that there’s no need even to leave the house to make your will). Some of the laws governing property rights are close to a hundred years old, but wills are different, because their laws which govern those technical issues are kept up to date now that more people have things to leave to their nearest and dearest. I will mention some points covered by the Trustee Act 2000, but obviously this is no more than an overview. The act dealt with trustees’ ‘duty of care’, and how that duty should be applied. There’s a requirement for trustees to review trust investments against stated criteria, and in normal circumstances they must take ‘proper’ advice. Unless the estate is large or complicated, I normally exclude these sections because there is no justification for saddling the estate with unnecessary professional fees. Next, there is a section which sets out the manner in which trustees can employ agents, nominees and custodians. This may be relevant to larger family or charitable trusts, but it has little or no relevance to a typical will. Finally, there is a section which requires trustees to consult with beneficiaries regarding their occupation of trust property. The recommendation is that this should be routinely excluded, particularly where there is a property to be sold and the proceeds divided. The will writer’s job is to advise the client on content in the will which is relevant to the client’s circumstances, and to exclude the bits (like those which I have just mentioned) which might delay winding up the estate, cause extra costs or lead to family rows. Now that we have dealt with that technical clause, the most important box to tick is ‘Have you made your will yet?’ Trevor Dodwell, The Will Business Ltd

ARGO (15) FUSING SUSPENSE AND HUMOUR IN A POLITICAL DRAMA On 24th May comes our long awaited film – Argo. It received widespread acclaim and seven nominations at the 2013 Academy Awards, winning three plus Best Picture at the Golden Globe awards. The plot is based on true events. Militants storm the US embassy in Tehran on 4th November 1979 in retaliation for President Jimmy Carter giving the Shah asylum in the US during the revolution in Iran. More than 50 of the embassy staff are taken as hostage, but six US diplomats escape and hide in the home of the Canadian ambassador. The film stars Ben Affleck as Mendez, who leads the rescue of the six US diplomats. The safety of the other hostages is paramount and the role of the US in the covert operation is suppressed and the lead is taken by the Canadian government. Argo is a film that will please all patrons who revel in a film that couples a tight plot with tension but also humour – even if it is dark at times! Admission remains at a modest £3.50 and refreshments including our ever popular choc ices will be served during an interval. Jerry’s Diary We are now in May, well it will be when this is read by many of you. At the moment it’s 11th April but it looks like we are still in February. All the hedgerows, shrubs and treet look dead. This is because they have been wind burnt by the persistent cold NE/E winds we have had right up to the first few days of April. The Blackthorn should now be full of blossom, and Pussywillows should be looking yellow with its blossom. These two shrubs/trees attract the first bees as well as other insects. Then spring Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers are attracted to the flowers where they will find insects. Pussywillow is the local name for Goat Willow. The first Chiffchaff that I heard singing was on 7th April, along Layham Road, last year it was March 14th. There were 6 singing on 10th April between Hill Farm and Bullocky Fen, but not in full song. Other notable sightings have been, 1 male Blackcap singing at Holbecks Park, 7th April, (26th March last year). I did see a Blackcap in January in my garden. Waxwings were seen in many locations, my first sighting was of 6 flying from a birch tree in Tinkers Lane on 3rd December. Other Waxwing sightings were, 6 at Raydon, Woodlands Hall grounds on December 5th (may have been same birds), 7 at Oxford Close, Christmas eve, 64 at the top of Lady Lane on 5th January, then the same flock was seen flying over Wolves Lane and feeding on rosehips near Aldham Church, 5 feeding on Rosehips at the rear of Keith Avis Printers, 1st and 2nd February. And a further 12 there on 26th March. The other “wing” species, Redwings were passing back through in good numbers at the end of March, but more so in the first 10 days of April. There were 400+ in song, perched in trees at Aldham on 6th April, and 300+ at Overbury Road, Layham 7th April, again many were singing. To the untrained ear these Redwing flocks could be mistaken for Starlings singing. The other Turdus Thrush, the Fieldfare was also seen in good numbers in the first 10 days of April. I saw 500+ on fields between Wolves Farm and Wolves Wood, 400+ at Polstead Heath and Hill Farm Layham. Other smaller flocks of 150/200 have been seen at several locations. The cold weather bird, the Lapwing has been seen in good numbers to, 400+ on fields near Wolves Wood on 6th April and 600+ there the next day, spotted whilst on the bus to Ipswich. Lots of reports of Barn Owls being found dead in some parts of Suffolk due to the long spell of cold weather. I’m glad to report that all of my Barn Owl sightings have been of birds that are alive and looking well. The highlight of my winter has been seeing 5 Barn Owls hunting together over the rough grass area at Bullocky Fen, late afternoon on the 30th March. It is possible that these might not have been local birds but birds that have been forced to move around during the bad weather from further afield. WAS IT, OR WASN’T IT? A Sardinian Warbler in a Hadleigh garden during the cold weather. The person who saw the bird has told me that he is sure it was after looking at the species in many books, and on the internet. The bird did not have any black on the head, it was grey and had red eye rings and eyes which stood out well on the bird. Sardinian Warblers have been turning up in Norfolk with 12+ sightings up to 2005, but I don’t know if any hung around during the winter months. The species are common in gardens in the Mediterranean. Do I think it was a Sardinian Warbler? Possibly, but the person who saw the birds has only given me a few details of this bird, a grey Warbler with red eyes, I will leave it at that. Swallows, seen over Cosford Hall, 12th April, 5 Swallows over Aldham Common 14th April. First Nightingales 15th April,2 and Layham Pit 4. And finally 5 Sandmartins over Hill Farm lake 15th April. As always if you see anything interesting please get in touch email: jerry@keithavis.co.uk

Kersey Mill Newsletter This month we are focusing on the people who lived, worked and tragically died at the mill. On a recent interview with Beryl of Polstead Heath we learnt that times were not always easy for the miller and his family. Often a poor harvest would result in little or no milling to do so the reliance on farming of a small holding was a necessity. Beryl’s great-great grandfather John Brame Bradbrook was working in the mill in 1862 and married Anne Hoy on the 1st February in 1866. John Brame Bradbrook He milled until he retired and continued to farm at Nook Farm until his death in 1906 at the grand age at the time of 73. Nook Farm stayed with the family as tenants until Mr Mason wanted the farm back for his son in October 1929. Beryl’s grandfather, also John, moved to work at Aldham Mill and they lived in Stone Street, Hadleigh.

Beryl’s grandfather on the Mason’s Brothers wagon c1926 There was also a tragic death at the mill that was reported thus in the Hadleigh Herald c1845. ‘HADLEIGH SHOCKING ACCIDENT’ - A melancholy and distressing accident occurred at Kersey Water Mill, near Hadleigh, on Wednesday morning last, which terminated fatally. A youth named Leech, 14 years of age, had only the previous Monday entered the service of Mr Mason, of the above mill as an apprentice, having previously been a considerable time in a wind mill. The poor boy was left alone in the mill, and is supposed to have been looking down at the great wheel in the pit, and overbalanced himself, and then fell between the cogs of the wheels. In consequence of the machinery having stopped, Mr Mason looked about to ascertain the cause, and found the poor boy between the wheels, with his heels uppermost. When taken out, the thumb of one hand was discovered to have been torn off, and the knuckles at the wrist laid bare: what state the body was in we could not ascertain, as an inquest had not been held when this report was written: death, however, was, doubtless, instantaneous. That tragic accident shows how dangerous the machinery was and still is. Great news from the Mill itself Paul Willis, of Armour Engineering a creative and skilled engineer visited the site and managed to release and disengage the Pinion that links the Line shaft to the main running power system the Pit Wheel. This is all very exciting as the next day with the help of Paul Cuthbert and George the wheel was turned to show the buckets hidden under the water are in good condition. This is the first time the wheel has been turned for a considerable number of years, possibly the first time it has moved since 1929. If you have any photographs of the mill please get in touch and thank you for reading and your continued support. Allan Scott Davies, email: allansd545@btinternet.com

At the April meeting we had a talk and slide show by Jonathan Jukes on the history of Marks Hall (near Coggeshall Essex). The slides included archive material and very old black and white photo's as well as modern ones showing the evolution and later the demise of a very grand house that had been set in thousands of acres of estate that concentrated on the originators obsessive lore of trees, especially it seems oak trees. There had been huge deer parks and avenues of trees that by the later part of the 20th century had dwindled to a few hundred acres with very few trees and with most of the landscaping looted as well as most of the remaining plants and the house itself. The loss of the estate and house was a combination of circumstances over the last hundred years of its existence, successional problems compounded by the second world war. The last incumbent had three wives and no heirs but thought he had ensured the continuation by leaving the estate to Kew on the understanding that they would continue its like which they were happy to do, except that his last wife lived for thirty years after his death, during which time the house was taken over for war use and an aerodrome built on a large part of the remaining land. By the time the lady died in the mid sixties, the house had become a shell that had to be pulled down and Kew had made other arrangements although I think they still do have an interest and input into its re-emergence which is absolutely wonderful. Members and guests were enthralled by the story and are looking forward to visiting what is an on-going story and really beautiful set of gardens, lakes etc, showcasing lots of different types of planting from different continents and climates. Jonathan originally went to work at Marks Hall straight from agricultural college, intending to stay two or three years, but, the place and the challenge involved obviously got under his skin as that was thirty years ago!! I haven't been yet but talking to those who have, think it really is a "must go to" place this summer Next months meeting is a talk by Adrienne and Mark De Roy on "The only Lavender Farm in Essex" and the competition a vase of Spring flowers - see you there Ruth Allen 822323

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts As I write this we have had a few days good gardening weather. and I am starting to think that I might catch up, but there are still problems. I have had some failures germinating seeds. I think that the reason is that even in the greenhouse temperatures have been so low that I have misjudged things and over watered them. I have found an interesting American web page which studies the temperatures that different vegetable seeds need in order to germinate. It splits seeds into 4 groups by the minimum temperature at which they will germinate :(a) 40 F Kale, Lettuce, Parsnips, Peas, Radish, Spinach (b) 50 F Leeks. Onions, Turnips, Swiss Chard (c) 60 F Beans, Beet, Brocolli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower (d) 70 F Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers, Squash, Sweet Corn, Melons The web page suggests that you check the ground temperature and use this to decide on seed sowing. It suggests measuring at a depth of 2" for smaller seeds and averaging the figure over several days. My monthly figure at 4" would be lower than these values. I rarely get figures over 60 F, but we know that Tomato seeds from compost in the garden do in fact germinate. I feel that whether you actually measure the temperatures or not, the 4 groups do provide a useful guide. It will not be long now before I discover whether or not the mature Ash tree in my garden has got the die back disease. With this in mind I was surprised to discover that in the past few years there have been a couple of outbreaks of a fungus disease affecting Sweet Chestnut trees. One of them was caused by imported stock from Europe an organisation called "38 Degrees" is running a petition to the government to ban the import of Sweet Chestnuts from Europe. The final thing that I am thinking about is the horrible state of my grass. Moss has taken over, and it is very difficult to eliminate. One can improve things by making fork holes to improve the drainage, and by raking the moss off, but this is very hard work so I shall concentrate on the small areas where I want it to look good, and not worry about the rest this year. Weather Records In March at Kersey there were 40.6 mm (1.6") of rain, which is just a bit below average rainfall. The 3 month figure was 108.8 mm (4.3") which is about 2/3 of the average. So our gardens are in quite a good state to work on at the moment. In March the maximum temperature was 8 Cel (46F), which is very cold. The average maximum temperature for March is 15 Cel (59F). The minimum temperature for March was -2 Cel (28F) which is close to the normal value. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 9 Cel (48F), which is about normal for mid April. Open Gardens We have the Hadleigh Show this month on the 18th of May, which always has some garden interest and a lot of gardens open :Mon 6th May Bevills Sudbury Rd Bures CO8 5JW Tues 7th May Monks Cottage Monks Lane Dedham CO7 6DP Sat 11th May Larks Hill Clopton Rd Tuddenham St Martin IP6 9BY Sun 12th May Blakenham Woodland Garden Little Blakenham IP8 4LZ Sun 12th May East Bergholt Place East Bergholt CO7 6UP Sat 18th May Hannams Hall Thorpe Rd Tendring CO16 9AR Sun 19th May Hannams Hall Thorpe Rd Tendring CO16 9AR Sun 19th May 41 Westmorland Rd Felixstowe IP11 9TJ (3 Gardens) Sun 19th May The Priory Stoke by Nayland CO6 4RL Sun 19th May Windmill Cottage Mill Hill Capel St Mary IP8 2JE Sat 25th May Moveron Brightlingsea CO7 0SB Sun 26th May Moveron Brightlingsea CO7 0SB Sun 26th May Green Farmhouse The Green Shelland IP14 3JE Sun 26th May Lavenham Hall Lavenham CO10 9QX Sun 26th May Woodwards Blacksmiths Lane Coddenham IP6 9TX Mon 27th May Columbine Hall Stowupland IP14 4AT Hints Garden Centres and Nurseries are now bulging with beautiful plants to tempt us. Before you part with your money, think where the plant is going to go in your garden, and whether it would grow there. Would it be the right size? Would the colour of the flowers or foliage fit its surroundings? Is your soil suitable for it? Would it get the amount of sun it needs? Could it cope with the wind that whistles round that corner? One needs to accept that there are lots of beautiful plants that you have no hope of growing in your particular garden. As a good general guide the time to prune shrubs is after they have flowered. So have a look at your forsythias, kerrias, flowering currants and spring flowering spirea, and trim off the flowering shoots, so that they can make new shoots for the flowers to come on next year. There are odd exceptions, so one needs to get to know your plants. I have one variety of forsythia that flowers best on the side shoots of one year old growth. This needs 50% of the shoots cut out each year at this time. Some varieties of roses are prone to the disfiguring fungus on the leaves called black spot. I do not go for a lot of spraying, but the way to control this problem is to start early, and spray prone varieties with a fungicide. The same approach applies to hollyhocks which get a fungus called rust which is generally not fatal, but does spoil them. Good Gardening, John Rye

Dear Sir On Saturday 30th March my son and I arrived at the White Hart Inn in Hadleigh to take up the room booking I had made several weeks earlier. The new landlord had no knowledge of the booking, the previous landlord not having informed him. Despite this he gave us a warm welcome, a cup of tea and went to arrange beds etc. We were well catered for and had a splendid breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday, with the added bonus of an excellent karaoke evening on the Saturday! This is a lovely old inn and I hope that the residents of Hadleigh will make sure that it is well used. Well done mine host, thank you for a lovely time. Joan Burney, Lichfield, Staffs

The Porch Project are being sponsored by the Hadleigh Thrift Shop courtesy of Mrs. B. Boyd. I would welcome and appreciate any sponsorship toward the costs of the site in part or whole, to enable the maximum amount to be raised on the day. Also welcome would be compact discs, DVD's, or any small item suitable to be used as prizes on the stall. I may be contacted on 01473 829127, whether for sponsorship or collection of donated items. I thank you in anticipation of your support to this worthy charity for our serving forces. Fred Breyer
Dear Sir Much has been made about the response times of East Anglian Ambulance Service, by BBC Look East, which I watch, and for what its worth, have milked it for all its worth. I for my part, yesterday the 13th of April, had need to dial 111 for medical aid, within a very short time, our local responder arrived at my home, followed by a NHS ambulance, with a crew of two medical technicians, who were very quick with their response. I can't speak more highly of the service received, they were faultless. With false calls by rogues and time wasters, you can understand delays at times, and the pile ups at A&E at the hospital. I can only have praise for our NHS ambulance service, they do a wonderful job. All is well to date. I would like to thank my neighbour Pam Brown for her concern, also my sister Liz Leys, for her company, and support at this time. If there are any persons employed with the Ambulance Service, who receive the HCN, spread the good word, you are a treasure. John Caley

Dear Sir How very refreshing for someone (Jan Byrne in April's edition) to at long last propose something positive for the old Brett Works site. There have been so many negative messages about this part of Hadleigh for so long. It's very easy to say what we don't want, but so much more constructive to think, talk and plan for what we as a town actually need or just simply want. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the town side of the river could be opened up to the people of Hadleigh to create more leisure area near the heart of the town? Terry Angland
Poets Corner Chatter I put my hand on my lips, as I try not to giggle. My eyes crinkled with mirth, with my scarf, I fiddle. People do the funniest things and don’t seem aware. That most of it is ridiculous, beyond compare. Does anyone think before opening their mouths to say. The silliest stuff, I have heard today. It flows from their lips, without a pause. Most of it without, rhyme, reason or cause. I try to be polite and hold my laughter in. Bust just end wearing, the stupidest grin. Please don’t stop though, we all need a natter. You lift my day, with your banter and chatter. By Sue A Williamston

Last month I talked about an item of property that had been handed into the Police Station that still remains unclaimed. Whilst the station operates limited opening hours, we do still receive a large number of lost and found property. Officers also find the odd item whilst on patrol, not to mention the many pedal cycles that are abandoned or miss placed. If you lose something please do consider us as you may be pleasantly surprised as to what is handed in to us. Currently we have two fairly new expensive mobile phones, a pricey alarm car key fob for a high-end vehicle, and jewellery. Much of what we have is easily identifiable so we can reunite the item with the owner when they come forward. Remember, after 30 days the finder can lay claim to the item. If the finder does not want the item, all police found property is then listed for auction at www.bumblebeeauctions.co.uk. This site is definitely worth a look and will list all property listed by Police Services all over the Country. In other news, following many complaints from commuters, residents and colleagues, we have issued letters to every household in Benton Street informing them that we will take a zero tolerance approach to anti-social parking along the full stretch of road. As many of you will know, Benton Street can often become congested at its narrow points, and for some years now we have been successfully reducing the use of the road by heavy goods vehicles in conjunction with our Lorry Watch volunteers and the County Council. Abuse of single and double yellow lines is not tolerated anywhere. Single yellow lines mean that you cannot park or wait in that location, usually between the hours of 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday. A small yellow sign will be mounted near the lines confirming the restriction. Double yellow lines mean no waiting/parking at any time. Please park responsibly. The Town’s mini roundabouts still cause some confusion for motorists. A miniroundabout must be treated the same as any other roundabout. All vehicles MUST pass around the central markings except large vehicles which are physically incapable of doing so. Remember, there is less space to manoeuvre and less time to signal so make sure your speed is low and you fully concentrate on your surroundings. There has been an increase of catalytic convertor thefts in the region lately, and there are many ways in which you can safeguard your vehicle or minimise the risk of theft. One of the more popular methods is having the convertor marked with the registration number of your vehicle. Ainger Holberows in Hadleigh High Street and Crockatt Garage on Crockatt Road both have the equipment to carry out the marking and they offer this free of charge with any service or MOT. On Wednesday 8th May 2013 we will be hosting a catalytic convertor marking day at Crockatt Garage between 8.30am and 12.30pm. If you want your “cat marked, just turn up between these times and the staff will mark your equipment free of charge. Finally, many people often ask me what they should do when an emergency vehicle appears behind them on the road with blue lights flashing and sirens wailing. Firstly, do not panic. Do not make any sudden movements that might endanger you or your passengers. Do indicate to the nearside so that the driver behind is aware you have seen them. Maintain your current speed until it is safe to pull over and stop. Do not pull over or slow down on a bend. Think about logical over taking spaces. If you would not think of overtaking, we won’t either! Finally, make your movements definite. In an ideal world, we would like to see drivers pull over to the side of the road and stop when safe to do so. The Police Station is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons between 1pm and 3pm. You can contact us by telephone on 101 or email babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk. In an emergency always dial 999. Until next time, Matt, PC 1455 Paisley Matthew.paisley@suffolk.pnn.police.uk Hadleigh Police Station

With May, the fifth month of the year upon us already, everyone at The Shelley Centre steps up a gear as there is so much to prepare for. On the 5th of May we have the Sponsored Walk – not too late to enter yet, contact robsouthgate58@btinternet.com –and our major local event, The Hadleigh Show at Holbecks Park! Also, a second Pony Day will be held on 1st June. In the case of the Hadleigh Show, a very popular event, we will be busy dusting down our liveried gazebo, tables, chairs and RDA Display Stand and taking our usual place in the shopping village area of the show. This will be manned at all times by our Shelley Centre Volunteers who will be delighted to talk with you about the work we do as well as inviting you to buy from our range of plants, tempting home made cakes, savouries, preserves and sweets: a nice cake would be ideal to enjoy with your picnic as you sit watching the events unfold in the main arena…..and don’t forget, after expenses, every penny raised from our sale of goods will go to meeting the ever increasing cost of running The Centre……you win, we win! With fund raising still foremost in my circuits, The Herd and I would like to thank the East of England Co-operative Society, Hadleigh store, for their help by choosing us as one of the charities to receive sponsorship through their new in store ‘Donate by Token’ scheme, which started during February. Although, at the time of preparing copy, we do not know how much was raised we will tell you via this Blog once the final total becomes available. However, whilst we are appreciative of the Co-op for their generosity, we have not forgotten you! Yes, those of you who having made your purchase in the Co-op decided to put your tokens into our box……a very warm ‘Thank You’ from Me, BABS, the Hairy Hoofed ones and of course our Riders and Volunteers……we cannot do it without you! Ah Well! Better go as the day job summons; wonder what level my Rider will go to today……a trot maybe? Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473.824172
Rotary Review MAY SHOW: this year you will not find Rotary in its usual place but space has been taken in the Chamber of Commerce tent instead. Please come and visit us there to find out more about your local Rotary Club - what we do locally and internationally - how you may help - how to become an associate member etc. There will be a prize competition and sweets for the children. We look forward to meeting many readers. SPEAKERS: 1 Rod Lovatt,Club member, spoke about his voluntery work as a police cell lay visitor. After being approved by the local /area police and the Home Office he joined the West Suffolk Panel of Independent Custody Visitors. Working in pairs, usually male/female, these pay unannounced visits to the 6 police stations in the group with cells. Visits and full inspections of facilities and records are made whether cells occupied or not and a report sent to the Home Office. If a prisoner is in residence he sees the visitor who ensures that he knows his basic rights namely to telephone family or friend, to legal representation, to food and drink, to washing and toilet facilities and if under15 to see a socila worker. Rod served a full term of 6 years and related a number of amusing and more serious experiences. 2 John Robinson, Club member, brought to the meeting a number of unique and historic newspapers from his collection to illustrate his talk on the history of the newspaper. He highlighted a few important dates with papers from the period. A newspaper was first produced in about 1620 but the most important was the London Gazette started by Henry Muddiman in 1660 (and still in print today) consisting of 32 pages and an index containing mainly shipping news and letters about current events. The Great Plague saw him move to Oxford where he started the Oxford Gazette but he soon returned to the London Gazette only to be dismissed by the Government which was running the paper. He set up his own printing press and produced Current Intelligence but unfortunately the Fire of London destroyed the press after only 11 editions [ John has no 9 dated 1666]. In 1842 Herbert Ingrams produced the Illustrated London News with drawings and pictures for 6d a copy. This was very expensive at the time but sold 60,000 copies in its first week. 1880 saw the advent of cheap newsprint and Alfred Harmsworth [ later Lord Northcliffe] produced the Daily Mirror for1/2d and it remained this price until 1914. In 1890 the Illustrated London News was the first paper to use photographs whilst we had to wait until 1986 for the next major development - Today became the first paper printed in colour. And the latest development? this is ‘The Daily’, the first digital only newspaper produced by none other than Rupert Murdoch. 3 Ron Austin, another member of the Club and Retired Chief Superintendent, Metropolitan Police, entitled his talk 'Murder most foul'. He related the story of Lord Lucan with the aid of a powerpoint presentation. It all started 7.11.1974 when Lady Lucan returned to the family home in Belgravia to find her husband missing and the dead body of the nanny downstairs. She ran to the nearby Plumbers Arms for help where Ron happened to be in the back bar. However she went to the front and he did not hear what was happeniing until later, nor was he directly involved in the investigation. The search for Lord Lucan began at his flat where a passport and other papers were found but not him.Police were with his mother when he telephoned but he refused to speak to police and they lost him again. Apparently he was staying with a lady friend but she did not report this until much later. His car was eventuslly found at Newhaven Ferry port and had bloodstains in it but there was no sign of Lord Lucan or proof that he had boarded a ferry. He was a gambler frequenting John Aspinall's Claremont Club along with many celebrities and aristocrscy such as Graham Hill, Tiny Rowland and Sir James Goldsmith. The police had great difficulty in interviewing his friends and although there were many reported sightings he was never found. The question remains therefore is he dead or is he still hiding somewhere in the world maybe Africa? FUTURE PROGRAMME: May 2 Annual General Meeting (postponed from April), May 9 Speaker, May 16 Speaker, May 23 Discussion Evening, May 30 Speaker For all information relating to this Club please visit Rotary Club of Hadleigh website or ring Rotarian Alan Williams Tel 01473830229

Eastern Family Services Supports Foster Care Fortnight 13-26 May 2013 For two weeks every May, Foster Care Fortnight, the UK’s biggest fostering campaign co-ordinated by Fostering Network, puts fostering centre stage throughout the UK. The campaign’s aim is to raise awareness of the urgent need for more people to come forward and become foster carers. On any one day there are more than 62,000 children living with foster families in the UK and with more children than ever coming into care, Fostering Network estimates that UK fostering services need to recruit a further 9,000 foster families in the next 12 months. Eastern Family Services (an East Bergholt based independent fostering agency) is looking for people from all backgrounds to become foster carers who will be able to provide children in care with a safe, secure and nurturing family home environment while they can’t live with their own families for anything from a few days to many years. Fostering is not an easy option for anyone to take but it can be a very rewarding experience and does offer the opportunity to make a huge difference to the lives of the children who need it. To become a foster carer a family assessment is involved and we provide initial training to help develop an understanding of what fostering is all about. Once approved as a foster carer we provide the best possible support to carers and children; both through our highly experienced social workers and network of specialists and through payment of a good financial allowance to carers when looking after children. Making the decision to become a foster carer often takes time because it is a decision that will change your life! If you are interested in finding out more please look at our website www.easternfamilyservices.com or give us a call on 01206 299775 - we are always more than happy to answer any questions you might have and help you think about whether fostering is right for you and your family.

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club On Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/hadleighhares On Twitter www.twitter.com/hadleighhares84 Online www.hadleighhares.co.uk Marathon fever has gripped Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club this year, with unprecedented numbers of runners making their final preparations for the spring marathons. First off is Tim Ryder competing in the Paris Marathon, followed by marathon debutants John Scaife and Simon Fenn in the Brighton Marathon on 14th April. Anne Wilkinson also makes the picturesque journey to the south coast determined to beat her time from the previous year. London plays host to a phalanx of Hadleigh Hares on 21st April, where marathon veterans Brian Airlie and Corinna Hussey are accompanied by marathon first timers, Dave Dulake, Liz Jeeves, Nikki Vince and triathlon star Penny Grayson, who has Barbara Sanders' long standing Hadleigh Hares ladies' club record record of 3hrs 31mins firmly in her sights. Completing the marathon series Rachel Bodsworth travels north for the Greater Manchester Marathon on 28th April, which starts next to Manchester United's stadium, Old Trafford. Rachel is on target to beat four hours following her debut at Brighton last year. Sun 17th March 2013: Colchester Half Marathon Nine Hares were among the 1,700 runners who took part in the Colchester Half Marathon with many using it as a final test before the spring Marathons. It was a very quick opening two miles from the football club into town before a sharp rise up North Hill and High Street. The course followed Ipswich Road before heading out to the countryside and the villages of Langham and Boxted. There were some encouraging times especially from the girls with a good debut half marathon for Emma Ratcliffe, a PB for Rachel Bodsworth and an excellent sub 1hr 50min time from triathlete Liz Jeeves. Results John Scaife 01:17:25, David Dulake 01:43:36, Rachel Bodsworth 01:46:32, Robert Jeeves 01:46:59, Liz Jeeves 01:48:51, Stuart Hunt 01:51:43 Steve Hunt 01:51:44, Chris Bone 02:00:41, Emma Ratcliffe 02:12:53. London Marathon Heroes After 3 months of solid marathon preparation the ‘Big Day’ finally arrived for 5 determined looking Hadleigh Hares. Not daunted by the fact that the Hares ‘leading lady’, Penny Grayson had withdrawn though ill health at the eleventh hour, the 5 remaining intrepid Hares approached the start at Blackheath with a heady mix of nerves, excitement & terror! With the promise of near perfect weather conditions for marathon running, although the weather did heat up significantly in the later stages, the Hares toed the start line ready to step out into the ‘unknown’ & fulfil their own personal journey’s. As ever the crowd support was unrivalled round the fantastic London route, if anything reaching new heights, in support of the worldwide running community, following the tragic events at Boston earlier that week. Brian Airlie, considered by many as Britains ‘best’ postman, also showed what an accomplished runner he is too, leading the Hares home in 3 hrs 47 min & 9 sec, closely followed by his training partner Dave Dulake in 4hrs 1 min & 3 sec, agonisingly close to the ‘magic’ 4 hour mark. Not far behind Corinna Hussey was having a ‘blinder’, smashing her marathon PB set at Dublin 18 months earlier by a whopping 35 minutes, finishing in 4 hrs 12 mins & 16 sec. Smiling Nikki Vince had a wonderful day lapping up the big race atmosphere and achieving a superb 4 hrs 24 min 47 sec debut marathon, taking home a finishers medal and memories that she will always cherish. Last but not least ‘triathlon starlet’ Liz Jeeves, having already shown her great shorter distance potential in the build up, proved her true versatility with a courageous 4 hr 30 min 1 sec finish, following a stunning half way split. A big well done from everyone at Hadleigh Hares & here’s to next year! Brighton Marathon Three members of Hadleigh Hares kicked off the Spring marathon season by taking part in the Brighton marathon on Sunday 14th April 2013. John Scaife and Simon Fenn were making their marathon debuts whilst Anne Wilkinson was taking part in her second Brighton marathon. The day dawned cloudy and damp but very humid. During the course of the morning the cloud burnt off to bring brilliant warm sunshine. Something none of the British runners had experienced through their long, cold winter training. Despite the weather John Scaife came in with a phenomenal debut time of 3. 01: 31. Simon Fenn produced an equally impressive time of 3.56:51. Anne Wilkinson finished, but was pleased to be taking part after being ill, through much of her later stage training. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims of the Boston marathon bombing but also with the loved ones of Sam Harper Brighouse, who unfortunately, lost his life, whilst running the Brighton marathon.

On 9 April, Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa once again hosted the biggest Junior Golf Open in the country. George Tunbridge of Bentley Golf Club was the winner of the Boys’ title, while local boy Sam O’Brien (from Stoke by Nayland) came in a close second. THE WORKSHOP MAGDALEN ROAD
Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk As winter eventually gave way to more seasonal weather, it was all systems go for Hadleigh United as a large number of fixtures were completed after weeks of frozen pitches. After the disappointment of the exit from the F.A Vase it was league fixtures that dominated the scene. Wins against Haverhill, Thetford and Diss made certain of finishing the season in a respectable position in the middle of the league table. But it is the excellent run in the F.A Vase which made for a memorable campaign. To reach the quarter-final of a national competition is a superb achievement. The resumption of play after the bad weather has seen some excellent results for our Reserve team. A hattrick by young Tom Driscoll in a three goal win against Halstead Reserves deserves credit. A win against Woodbridge Reserves by four goals to one saw a hat-trick for James Blades in another superb performance by our reserve team. Reserve matches against Sudbury, Felixstowe and Wivenhoe were drawn as the Reserves consolidated a position in the middle of the league table. Reaching the semi-final of the Suffolk Reserve Cup was a good achievement of our second team. The second half of the season has been a memorable time for our Thurlow Nunn Youth Team. At the turn of the year the team was near the bottom of the league but a superb run of results lifted us to one of the leading positions. A one goal win against Witham saw Brett Crisp score a vital goal. One goal wins against Felixstowe and Halstead saw Harry Evans on target in both games as our Youth Team picked up maximum points against strong opposition. Harry Evans also converted a penalty kick to earn a draw at Long Melford in yet another good display by our Youth Team. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Jim Wilding and Rolf Beggerow. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group The season has only just got underway but there has already been one momentous achievement by one of our number. Club treasurer Tim Ryder swapped ledgers for lycra on Sunday 7th April when he ran in the Paris Marathon. This was Tim’s first attempt at the ultimate in long distance running and we are delighted to report that (unlike Mo Farah) he completed the race in 3 hours 48 mins. I would be lucky if I got a 50 in that time, so this was a tremendous effort by Tim, and the club congratulates him on his achievement. The season opened on 20th April with HCC Treasurer Tim Ryder after our first game back in Division 1 of the completing the Paris Marathon Two Counties Championship. And what a remarkable game it turned out to be against Halstead, only just relegated from the East Anglian Premier League. Matt Wareing, a 19-year old left arm quick bowler making his league debut for Hadleigh, took 7-25 as Halstead were dismissed for just 110. We looked to be cruising to victory after skipper Josh Davey and Marlon Dias put on 80 for the first wicket, only for a crazy collapse saw six wickets fall for just four runs, as the scoring slowed to a standstill. 50 overs had already been bowled when the final pair of Kyle Tanner and Wareing scrambled a single to see Hadleigh home by just one wicket in front of a large crowd at the Meadow.
