Soapbox Scavenge
GSOIBBON S LICITO RS Howard with Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly
With so many people in Hadleigh wanting to throw themselves speedily down hills, the Rugby Club are staging their second Hadleigh Soapbox Races earlier in the season, on July 15th. Of course, the main components of a good kart are its wheels and the local landfill, run by FCC Environment for the local councils, have come good. A scavenging team, led by captain Oli ‘Beerlegs’, spent Saturday morning, dismantling a variety of wheeled scrap vehicles (principally bikes) with help from Lucy, Mel and Graham, the FCC local team. A veritable production line of spanners, strong wrists and muscle produced a mound of very usable Soapbox wheels. Oli said: ‘We’ve had an immense amount of interest in building karts, but know that sourcing wheels can be difficult. A problem no longer!’ He went on: ‘If you want to enter a kart and need wheels contact the race secretary. My advice is to get going; once you start the basic frame comes together quickly and then you get into and want to make refinements, perhaps change your steering decisions and then there is the whole business of decorating the kart. ‘Our grateful thanks to FCC Environment who have joined other local businesses in really getting this going.’ If you want details of entering go to the ‘Hadleigh Soapbox’ facebook page. Alternatively ring the Race Secretary on 07545 545744. Wheels are being looked after by Ainger Holbrow and, once registered, you can go and choose your set free of charge!

Barbara, Shannon, Lucy, Alex, Sonia and Pansy would like to thank everyone for their love, messages of sympathy following Shane's sad passing and the overwhelming support at his funeral on the 7th April. As many people know, Shane spent a great deal of time in Ipswich Hospital, we cannot thank Critical Care and Shotley ward enough for all their care and kindness. Shane wished donations to be made to his regular ward; Rushmere day unit, of which we are gratefully still receiving donations for. Also a huge thank you to those who donated to Lupus UK at the celebration of his life, we raised £60! As Shane's family we would like to thank R Gwinnell and Sons funeral directors and Rev Canon David Atkins for a wonderful service. Shane was an incredible Husband, Dad, Brother, Grandson and friend who was loved by many and missed by all. P

My dear readers – thank you to my correspondents who wrote about my last column. I should have referred to Hintlesham Golf Club and not Hintlesham Hall Golf Club. I do hope that some of you may visit the Club for a coffee or lunch (Tel. 01473 652761). Furthermore, a grammatical error crept into one of the editions in that I should have penned “Debbie and me”. I am delighted that I have such an exacting readership. The written word is a form of art and it is important that high standards are maintained. As Churchill said, “this is something up with which I will not put”. I am conscious how much you all love to see my doglets and here they are in the picture – as you know they are called Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly and they are loved dearly. I had a scare some weeks ago when Tilly had to have a back operation. We went to the Dick White Clinic in Newmarket where the consultants whose skills are exceptional operated at 1 in the morning. What a marvellous place; if only our hospitals were as good. The “41 Club” was originally an extension of The Round Table and I thank John Winders (john.winders@btinternet.com) for such an enjoyable evening when I addressed members after dinner at The Ram in Hadleigh. I know that there are those of you who are owner-drivers and shun the merits of a chauffeur. With this lovely Spring weather, it is an opportunity for you to perambulate your motor cars through the highways and byways of the County. Next time you are in Lavenham do pop in to see Jonathan Lambert’s new jewellery shop next to The Swan at Number 98/99 High Street. Jonathan and his wife Yasmin specialise in bespoke designs and they have flourishing busts and bronzes (Tel. 01787 881181). With the lighter evenings, my chauffeur Frank and my housekeeper Maria have not been spending as much time playing canasta. In the Winter months, it keeps them amused until the small hours. The mating season is upon us and so they have been very busy; there’s never any peace with animals to look after. Frank has been tending to his onions, he always fears that they will become entangled with weeds. Once that happens, it is a short step to yellow tops and they will be no good for pulling in the Season. And, so we turn to the business in hand. The property market has been reasonably lively and do approach us at an early stage to deal with your conveyancing needs. It is becoming more difficult in every walk of life to find personal service. For legal matters that and experience is available to you in the High Street in Hadleigh. I would always recommend that you should have in place a Will to avoid complications that may otherwise ensue. Lasting Powers of Attorney are important and very useful documents and please do approach us to discuss them. Howard Gibbons

The Boule-in's Celebrity Fête!
"We had the most fantastic Fête du Printemps" exclaims Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston's now renowned Decorative French Lifestyle boutique The Boule-in "and we are planning on making our summer fair Fête d'Été the most prodigious event we've held yet! Having made a conscious decision to enjoy the lifestyle of dividing our time between Suffolk and Provence (and less time in London!) we have increased our focus on our established quarterly French Fêtes in Suffolk: It was wonderful to have had so many of our London customers visit us in Bildeston during the spring fair and we are now absolutely thrilled to have our friend and Kennington neighbour, Mark Hill, author and TV celebrity antiques expert, come and hold a 'Valuation Day' during our Fête d'Été !" Throughout the week of this delightful French event The Boule-in offers antiques and decorative collectables for both home & garden, baskets, books, balsamics and even plant stalls to entice and inspire you to create your own piece of Provençal living in Suffolk! Fête d'Été : Saturday 3rd - Sunday 11th June (10am - 5pm daily) Mark Hill Valuation Day : Saturday 10th June (see website for details) www.boule-in.co.uk Tel 01449 740359

Is it important to have your security system maintained annually?
Here at Abacus Fire and Security we would always say YES, annual maintenance of your system is always recommended to ensure that your system runs as smoothly as possible. We all rely on our security systems to provide peace of mind … what could be more reassuring than having the system checked by a fully trained, competent professional to set your mind at rest. Some insurance companies also have the stipulation that systems are maintained annually, it is worth checking your policy if you are unsure. During an annual maintenance visit our engineer will check that all of your devices are working correctly, potentially identifying any equipment problems before they occur; ensuring that your system remains fully functioning and as expected. Maintenance of the system also reduces the possibility of false activations which may cause environmental noise nuisance and possibly instil a loss of confidence in your system for yourself. With a maintenance contract you can rely on a genuine 24 hour call out service, undertaken by skilled, experienced, locally based engineers on hand to assist you, both over the phone or in person. We can also maintain systems that have been installed by others, please feel free to contact us for a no obligation quotation. Surviving Winter in Hadleigh (and the twelve villages)
It has been a year of steady progression aided by a relatively mild winter (against all the forecasts). We began with a Grand 88 Draw, only moderately supported to our surprise. Even a fantastic number of gifted expensive champagnes, spirits and wines topped off with an exclusive private flight around Hadleigh and the Suffolk coast failed to attract the punters. We settled for break even and the Hadlian’s for some well worth prizes, more in a future H.C.N. Our main activity this winter was receiving and distributing coal that was donated, plus attending the Friday market and helping with utility bill payment, plus advisory support. We are about to investigate the need for personal emergency alarms for those on benefit to cover most age groups including all disabled persons. We do not accrue funds to lie in our bank account, it is there to be used for the benefit of those for whom it is donated. Full details will appear in the June edition of HCN. We shall also be operating in the market again so please do come over and ask if you or someone you know of needs support. Our thanks are due to all those who have contributed financially so basically essential to operate, plus the more tangible items of thermal wear or fuel. We are also grateful for the support of the Town, District and County Councils. Without this support we could not meet our objectives. Thank you to each and every one. News from Whatfield CEVCP School
It’s difficult to believe that Summer is here already. As usual our pupils are thoroughly enjoying being outside in the fantastic environment we have, and are looking forward to all the sporting and outside activities we provide. Pupils are planning what to plant in the gardens and allotment, and the daffodils in the Early Years area are looking beautiful. Mothers and Grandmothers were particularly pleased to receive gifts of daffodils for Mother’s day from the children at Whatfield, thanks to our helpful volunteer gardeners! Although we may seem to be out and about a lot at sporting festivals and tournaments, we also take pride in our academic work. This year we have been working hard on our writing, and making good use of all the opportunities
ZOR Boutique AT KERSEY MILL
to develop and create original work. We have been using a system called IPEELL, which helps give pupils confidence in structuring their writing and has had a positive effect. We will be sharing some of our fantastic work at the pyramid training day on writing in April. Pupils continue to learn the ukulele, and have been learning a whole variety of new songs. The ukuleles were funded from a generous grant from the Rosa Simons fund, and pupils have had great fun learning to play them with John, our specialist from Upbeat music. We were so proud to be told the fantastic news that we have achieved the bronze Linguamarque for our brilliant work on modern foreign languages – French is taught to all of the children at Whatfield, even as young as Reception! This award reflects the effort we put into ensuring that we work at a good standard and provide a wide range of learning experiences for our pupils. Our aim is to look out into the wide world and beyond! We have lots of exciting activities to look forward to in the new term, such as forest schooling, the food farm fair and our Summer presentation. As always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you will be made very welcome. Telephone 01473 823 309 or email admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an arrangement to meet us and take a tour. www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

' Handcrafted Furniture: With low cost mass ' produced, flat pack furniture dominating the ' market, it’s a wonder that there is still a place for handmade furniture. 'Perhaps that is the very ' reason why the individual hand crafted items, ' lovingly made by Titchmarsh and Goodwin (T & ' G), are very much in demand. Angela Linforth, T ' & G’s Marketing Director traced the colourful history of this long 'standing family company which dates back to the ' 1920’s and has its roots in Ipswich. Tommy: A powerful performance of this 60’s rock musical by a mixed ability cast. Sadly all the social issues portrayed are still prevalent just a little more out in the open. An absorbing thought provoking production which was most enjoyable in a weird kind of way. Jewels: A Fidelis group of ballet lovers were able to enjoy Balanchine’s sparkling trio of one act ballets Jewels when it was beamed in live from Covent Garden to Ipswich Cineworld. The enchanting performance marked the 50th anniversary of his work which was inspired by Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds. '
Polstead Community Shop Afternoon Of Celebration
For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish
The (usually brief) Annual General Meeting for Polstead Community Shop will be held on Saturday 13th May at 2.00pm in the Village Hall. It will be followed by an ‘Afternoon of Celebration’, to mark the completion of the Shop’s recent make-over. The Shop has undergone a lot of changes over the past year and it is hoped that as many people as possible will wish to join us on this occasion to help celebrate our new-look. We will endeavour to keep the Shop open all day and during the afternoon there will be special offers and tastings for all our customers, including a free glass of bubbly in the Shop. We have had to order a new batch of Polstead souvenir mugs, as our present stock has almost run out and we have taken this opportunity to create a new design, which should prove popular with locals and visitors alike. Tea and cakes will be available in the Hall from the end of the AGM and a Celebration Cake (a Daphne’s special) will be cut at 3.00pm. Do come and join the party!

Charles Rowett will succeed Alistair Lang who is retiring at Easter after three years at the firm. Charles is no stranger to Suffolk having lived in the Woodbridge area for over twenty years and he held various executive roles locally in Gistbrocades UK and Hutchison Ports as well as in financial services and management consulting. Most recently he has been CEO at Yorkshire Cancer Research, the largest independent cancer charity in England. He commented, “I’m delighted to be coming back to Suffolk and to joining Gotelee at such an exciting time. The firm has an outstanding reputation in the region and there are enormous opportunities to build on the excellent work of Alistair and the Partners in a market that is changing rapidly.” Brian Morron, Senior Partner, added, “Charles’ experience in leadership roles and local knowledge proved the decisive points in what was a tough choice between a range of excellent candidates. We are delighted to have him on board for the next phase of Gotelee’s development.” The firm also announced the impending retirement of Brian Morron from the role of Senior Partner. He will continue at the firm as a consultant. After 16 years in the role he hands over in April to Peter Crix, currently head of the Wills and Probate department at Gotelee. Mr Crix has been a solicitor with Gotelee for 37 years having been based at both the Ipswich and Hadleigh offices. He said, “A time of change at the firm with Brian’s change of role and Charles’ arrival as well as continuing plans to grow our business. An exciting point to take on this leadership challenge and keep the momentum going. We have a strong team here across our various offices and I see good growth ahead”. www.gotelee.co.uk

This certificate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.
James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk President Trump’s decision to launch Tomahawk missile strikes against Syria has opened yet another high stakes chapter in the whirlwind that is international affairs today. Parliament rose for Easter following the UK’s formal notification to the EU of our intention to leave. It looks like we will be returning to debate the prospect of military conflict – not just in the middle east, but also in dangerous, dubious North Korea. It has been well remarked that Mr Trump’s move to back armed action by the US against President Assad represents a significant volte face on his part. Who knows, perhaps this unpredictability is an asset as despots like Assad and North Korea’s Kim are unable to second guess him, and perhaps feel more wary of aggression? Of course, if we are to assume that US sources are right in stating that Assad was responsible for launching chemical weapons on his own people, there is an argument for a limited and proportionate response. We certainly now need maximum international pressure applied to the Russians to cajole them in to breaking with Assad; equally, we need the Chinese to lean on North Korea so that they don’t proceed with further missile tests. Wishful thinking, perhaps. Whatever we do, in my view we must proceed with maximal caution. My fear is that we risk repeating the now tried and tested pattern of a bellicose linguistic ratchet that creates its own self-fulling momentum for conflict. With an unpredictable world, and an unpredictable president, we need to support our allies without adding to the growing sense of a militaristic adrenaline rush. I have only voted once in Parliament on sending UK forces to war, and that was very strictly to extend existing UK air strikes against ISIL terrorists in Iraq over the border into Syria - with no evidence of civilian casualties to date. I certainly did not vote for ‘regime change’, a phrase now re-emerging in Washington in relation to Assad. The policy of ‘regime change’ has failed in Iraq, and this is why I repeat the need for caution rather than a rush of blood.

In these uncertain times we need to pull together as a community and give help and support to all those in need. So much can be done to help. It does not have to be a “grand gesture” just something small to help others can make such a difference. Extending the hand of friendship, giving someone a cup of tea, listening, giving advice perhaps pointing that person in the right direction to get help. All these things do not cost much in monetary terms but can make a difference to the person who is at their wits end. When you are so concerned about your job, paying the rent or mortgage and providing the food that goes on the table you feel so alone. We, at the Hadleigh Healing Society understand what this feels like. All our qualified, registered healers are ordinary people who have faced the same problems as everyone else and understand how YOU are feeling. We offer a place where you can share your problems, in the strictest confidence and receive support. Please telephone 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighealingsociety.org for an appointment

Hadleigh Hall has become the 29th care home under the ownership of Suffolk based Kingsley Healthcare Group
The 54-bed home in Friars Road, on the edge of Hadleigh, will eventually create employment for more than 50 people. A substantial six-figure sum has been spent on refurbishing the 19th century property ahead of opening. Kingsley’s operations director Debbie McGovern said: “We fell in love with the building as soon as we saw it. This is a wonderful location to offer 24-hour nursing, residential and dementia care. “We have wonderful landscaped gardens and excellent views across rolling Suffolk countryside, and yet we are just on the edge of Hadleigh and only a short drive away from Ipswich and Sudbury.” She stressed that it was a completely fresh start for the home under the new ownership of a renowned national provider. She said: “As a company we are passionate in our belief that our residents should have the best possible quality of life. Providing first class care will be at the heart of everything we do at Hadleigh Hall. “Our staff treat residents as they would their own family and at all times respect the fact they are individuals with their own needs and preferences. “Our interest in our residents is genuine; we learn from listening, engaging and responding to feedback. Above all else, Hadleigh Hall is our residents’ home.” Operations manager Helen Gosling, who led the development of Kingsley’s acclaimed person-centred approach to dementia care, called WINGS, said: “We are managing Hadleigh Hall in a very special way in that the focus of every member of staff, whatever their job, will be meeting individuals physical and social needs.” She said our newly appointed manager, Emma Beckett, has vast experience in the care sector and, importantly, someone who shared Kingsley’s values and passion. The home is still seeking candidates for positions as nurses, support workers, domestics and activity coordinators. Kingsley was established in 1999 by Daya Thayan and his wife Sumi with the purchase of their first care home in Lowestoft. Since then the family owned business has grown into a national provider employing 1,600 people and caring for more than 1,100 residents. The company passed an important milestone last summer when staff moved into their new head office, Kingsley House, in the centre of Lowestoft. While planning continued national growth Mr Thayan insists on retaining Kingsley’s family values. “Every home we run must be of a standard that would fitting for my own parents,” he said. Ollie (the Black) Cat was caught napping recently when two ladies called in to see him. Unlike me, he hides himself away from visitors and was surprised to be discovered atop the hay where he keeps watch! And there’s plenty to see lately, Mum says we have converted to running a franchise for Noah and his Ark as the animals have been coming two by two. There’s Patch and Missie, a friendly pair of scruffy Jack Russells, several pairs of rabbits looking for gardens to occupy rather than tiny hutches, and one year old sibling cats Nancy and Ronnie. Ollie says they are a bit bemused and nervous at the moment, wondering why they are shut up in a cattery but they will be fine when re-homed. The Fundraisers enjoyed another warm welcome from Whatfield residents at our Easter Fair which raised £1000 last month. Thank you to Hadleigh Maid for donating a big chocolate Easter egg, top prize in our raffle, won by Margaret Avis for Tanya. Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lisa Patchett For the first time ever, our Summer Concert this year will take place in St. Mary’s, Hadleigh, and we are most grateful that this has been made possible. One reason for this is so that we can use the splendid organ for a performance of a Handel Organ Concerto (soloist John Cooper). Also in the programme will be Dukas’ popular ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, Beethoven’s First Symphony and two very popular arias by Puccini. More next month, but please note the date now: June 11th. 6.30 p.m. John Druce (Chairman, Hadleigh Orchestra)

‘Defending The Harbour’ Landguard Fort, Felixstowe by Dave Wood
Landguard Fort is situated on a peninsular, opposite Harwich and where the Rivers Stour and Orwell join to flow into the North Sea. It has a long rich history, but its major triumph is the preventing of the last full scale invasion of England by the Dutch on 2nd July 1667 - exactly 350 years ago this summer! By 1900 the Fort was obsolete, until the problem of reliability of large bore breech loading artillery was resolved. The Fort was manned throughout both World Wars, but by the 1950s the rocket age had arrived and in 1956 Coastal Artillery was finally closed down. Dave Wood has been involved with Landguard Fort since the 1980s and was present when the first guided tours were carried out. Total cost is just £19 including coffee on arrival and the talk by Dave Wood in the morning - followed by a buffet lunch. In the afternoon a coach will take us to the Landguard Fort for a visit. We will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the Fort. The coach fare, entry to the Fort and the guided tour are included in the cost. Tea and snacks are available in the Fort or in a nearby beach cafe (cost not included). Suitable footwear should be worn. Early booking is recommended. To book please contact Sue Whiteley - 01787 210945 or email: whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

The Friends of St Mary’s contributes £27k towards repairs to Hadleigh Church
The Friends of St Mary’s Church Hadleigh have just contributed £27,107 towards repairs to the stonework holding the windows of Hadleigh’s famous medieval church. Natural “wear and tear” over the centuries has resulted in some of the windows now requiring substantial maintenance and repair work. The need for these repairs was established in 2013, but the funds for the work were not available. Hadleigh’s Parochial Church Council (PCC) therefore looked to the Friends to help raise the funds for this essential work. “This was quite a challenge for the Friends,” explains the charity’s chairman John Hunt. “We were a very small group relying mainly on membership fees and small events. Clearly we had to up our game and preparations were put in hand to launch a major appeal to include donations, legacies and corporate contributions. “The Friends have received some very generous donations recently and we are pleased to have been able to make this £27,000 payment. However, the upcoming repair and maintenance requirements for St Mary’s are so substantial that we need to redouble our efforts,” Mr Hunt added. The Friends of St Mary’s Church Hadleigh is a charitable organisation dedicated to preserving the architectural heritage of Hadleigh’s magnificent historic Church and Deanery Tower. Despite it being Easter Saturday, April’s walk attracted 8 walkers for what was agreed to be one of the best walks for some time. We may decide to repeat it later in the year - with a few modifications for interest! A change of pace for May’s walk on Saturday 20th which will start at Chantry Park, Ipswich and end at the Hintlesham George a distance of 6.5 miles. Those feeling energetic can then continue the walk back to Hadleigh while others catch the bus. In detail, we will catch the 90 bus service from Hadleigh bus station at 0940 (Co op side) and alight at Chantry Park. We will then walk to Sproughton, along the River Gipping to Bramford then Thornbush Hall, Grindle Farm, Burstall Hall, Burstall and on to Hintlesham via Home Wood. We may be at the George in time for the 1233 bus back to Hadleigh. For those walking on to Hadleigh we will decide on the day whether to take the shorter route back via Cobbold’s Farm or the slightly longer route via Aldham Priory. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

I have had a life-changing experience lately, my 91 year-old mother has come to live with us in Hadleigh. Now before you congratulate her on passing on her cooking skills, please bear in mind that this is a woman who went on a Cordon Bleu cookery course without knowing how to boil an egg. And the sad thing is, you probably think I am joking! I kid you not, dear reader. Anyhoo, my mum is vegetarian and much as though I love our locally produced meat, I have a duty of care to the small matriarch who has the cooking skills that I can only liken to Ria from Butterflies – were she to try and make yoghurt it would resemble ‘worried milk’. Easy Spinach and Garlic Fusilli Ingredients 300g fusilli pasta, 2 tbsps olive oil, 1 onion 3 garlic cloves, 250g frozen spinach, defrosted, 1 lemon Handful fresh flatleaf parsley To serve: Parmesan or vegetarian alternative Method Bring a large pan of water to the boil, then add the pasta and cook for 10 minutes or until al dente. Drain, reserving a ladleful of the water. Finely chop the onion and slice the garlic. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in the frying pan, then fry the onion for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and spinach and cook for a further 3-4 minutes. Grate the zest of the lemon into the pan and squeeze in the juice. Add the cooked pasta, reserved pasta water and remaining olive oil. Roughly tear the parsley and toss through. Season well with salt and pepper, and shave cheese over to serve.

Boxford School wins Art Competition
The winners of the 2017 Hadleigh Show Programme cover competition have been announced. Each year Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association ask local primary schools to design a front cover for the Hadleigh Show programme. This year judging took place at Hintlesham Golf Club where designs from local schools were on display with a theme of Gardening & Art. The overall winner was Henry, aged 5, from Boxford Primary School and his winning entry will be printed on the 2017 Show programme. Other schools taking part included Bildeston, Copdock, Elmsett, Hintlesham & Chattisham, Kersey, Whatfield, St Mary’s Hadleigh and Beaumont. The top 20 covers will be on display in the Education Tent at the Show on 20th May along with other art work and craft activities.
Hadleigh & District Probus Club
The object of the Club, established in 1998, is "To promote fellowship amongst retired and semi-retired professional and business men". We meet for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month at The George, High Street, Hadleigh, where Tori and Paul make us welcome and provide us with excellent meals. This year we again held our customary Annual Dinner in the Town Hall Dining Room on 5th April. The turnout of members and guests were well served by Chaplin Catering of Naughton. Following previous happy experiences we visited the Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club again last year for our Ladies Lunch on 3rd August. Our high expectations were well met by an excellent meal in elegant surroundings. Members enjoy the occasional outing: this year we are planning a quiet trip (by electric launch!) down the River Stour from Sudbury for lunch at Henny “Swan. We had two lunchtime speakers during the year. In October Trevor Sheldrick, the Hadleigh Town Mayor and County Councillor, spoke about his involvement with Community First Responders; in January Mike Brennan told us about his Great War project identifying the stories behind the names on the Memorial. The number of members in the Club is limited, mostly by the accommodation available for lunch, but we have room for a few more. Any person interested in joining should, in the first instance, contact the Secretary, Chris Drake, on 01473 808147, email chrisdrake29@talktalk.net.

Ofsted - June 2016 Music
The Spring Term has certainly been a busy one! On Thursday, 9th March our choir of 100 went to join other schools from across the County to perform in the Snape Maltings Concert Hall. It was the 30th Year Celebration, a unique experience for the children to enjoy taking part and also to appreciate a variety of musical talent. The evening concert finished with a party-themed Finale composed by Gwyneth Herbert, a very talented contemporary composer. We were very proud of our Choir and were given lovely feedback from Snape’s Learning and Inclusion Team… ‘‘True professionals throughout the day on and off stage. Your performance was beautiful!’’
Sport
During March, Hadleigh CPS have competed in a variety of different sporting events such as Futsal competitions, Tag Rugby festivals, Hockey matches, Cross Country events and Basketball competitions. On Tuesday 28th March, our Year 6 Basketball squad took part in the County Finals at Inspire Suffolk. This was the result of the team winning the Ipswich Schools tournament and also finishing runners-up in the County Final Play-offs. They finished top of their group after winning all three of their league games which meant they qualified for the semi-finals where they came up against Gorseland and won taking them through to the finals. Despite the children's hard work and effort we finished runners-up in the whole competition which was a massive achievement for the children and the school. Well done Year 6!
Early Years Foundation Stage – Nursery and Reception
Now that the weather is starting to get warmer, we have been exploring our school environment looking for signs of spring. We have observed the frogs and frogspawn in the pond, and the daffodils growing in the garden. During our weekly forest school sessions we have noticed the new leaves beginning to grow on the trees and plants. We have plenty of elder in our woods which is also growing well, so cut off a few sticks. The children then helped to cut these into smaller beads, which they then hollowed with a tent peg before treading onto a pipe cleaner. Their 'natural' bracelets looked wonderful!
Key Stage 1 (Year 2)
Hadleigh Maid visited Year 2 recently where they learnt how to temper chocolate and then made an egg from a mould and decorated the egg. Their DT project was to look at different types of packaging and then they made their own tray/basket out of paper based on a net of a cuboid. Their packaging had to be strong enough to transport their chocolate egg home.
During the term, we also had a visit from our School Games Organiser, Ali Furlong. Ali was here on a special visit to present our school with the Gold Kitemark Award in School Sport. This award has been given to only 10 schools in Suffolk and we could not be more thrilled about receiving it for the second year in a row. Thank you to all the children, staff and the PE team for making this happen.

After successful pantos and also a murder mystery play we thought we would try a new type of show for the people of Hadleigh. It's my pleasure to say we will be putting on The Vicar Of Dibley in early July. The script we will be using is a stage play by Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter adapted from the original TV series by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer. With kind permission of Tiger Aspect Productions. All now have all the cast and are working hard to put the production together. Keep your eyes peeled for posters of when tickets are available for this very funny show. HADS will of course be having another panto at the start of 2018 and we will also be attending as many events as we can during the year too including the raft race and possibly the soap box races too. To keep up to date please visit our Facebook page or our website www.hads.moonfruit.com Many thanks, Trev Clarke, Chairman of HADS

Re-instating the Suffolk Long House at Orchard Barn
Exciting news! Planning permission has been passed for the re-instatement of the timber frame at Orchard Barn. The Long House was first built in the 1580s. Last lived in during the 1930’s, this important heritage building is to be rescued from the brambles and constructed ‘like for like’ using local trees, coppiced hazel and home-dug daub. Wherever possible original timbers will be repaired and reused. With over 2,000 students and volunteers involved so far, OBee Community Interest Company is looking forward to welcoming more people from the local and wider community to this unique living history project. The photograph shows the old house in the 1960s before it fell over! Orchard Barn has a unique link to Sir Thomas Gresham who in 1565 founded the Royal Stock Exchange in London. Sir Gresham owned some fine woodland in Battisford. He brought 200 carpenters to the area to convert his trees into the frame for the Stock Exchange. The remains of the sawpits can still be made out on Battisford Common. Of course he would have taken the best timber for the main project, but there would have been lesser grade timbers left over. We think they may have been used in the Orchard Barn Long House as its timbers are completely oversized! If you are interested in getting involved as a volunteer or participating in a timber frame/repair course, please email sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473 658193.

Furious splashing on the Brett?
It can only be that major community event 'The Hadleigh Duck & Raft Race' run by the Scouts and scheduled for Sunday 4th June this year. This annual tradition is now entering its 10th year and the frolics seem to get more exciting each year. The ducks are all in training under the guidance of Spirit Fitness who are regulars at the Scout HQ (Not real ones, plastic ones btw) and previous champions of the rafting side of the celebrations are talking the talk of this year being a classic. If you have already been, you'll need no persuasion - 10am start at Toppesfield Bridge. If you haven't been, bring your family to one of Hadleigh's highlights. The Party afterwards, as per tradition, is at The George. What better way to spend a Sunday in June? If you want to buy a duck - talk to a Scout. If you would like to enter a raft team, ring the Race Secretary on 07 545 545 744

Easter Bonnet Parade Mums, Dads, Nans & Granddads, Friends and Family joined us to watch our children from Butterflies and Bumblebees display their homemade Easter Bonnets in a wonderful parade. This was the perfect end to another busy half term! Easter Raffle Thank you to everyone who donated Easter Eggs and various chocolate treats for our Easter Raffle. We raised an amazing £57. One of our governors drew the raffle in time for several happy children to start the holidays with excessive amounts of chocolate! Red Nose Day We raised an incredible £87 for this important cause. The children all came into school kitted out in all things red for small donation. Mummy & Me Summer Term Our Mummy & Me toddler group is now officially up and running. The group meets once a fortnight, on a Thursday, 9.30am – 11am. The dates this term are: 20th April, 4th May, 18th May, 8th June, 22nd June, 6th July and 20th July. We are aware that there are a lot of local families, both military and civilian, who have young children but there are not a lot of groups for them to attend within the community. We hope that you will join us for a cup of tea and a chance to strengthen our family community.
Thank you
A big thank you to all who assisted when my father, Eric, fell and severely injured himself near the entrance to Magdalen Road car park on the evening of Tuesday 21st March. Thank you to the gentlemen who saw it happen and stayed with him; to those who telephoned for an ambulance; to those who created a human cordon around him to ensure he was safe from traffic whilst he was lying in the road; and to the passing policeman who hastened the arrival of the ambulance after our interminable wait. And a huge thank you to the dear lady who sacrificed pillows and blankets together with a large number of tea-towels in an effort to stop the flow of blood. You are all a credit to our community. Although he has as yet to make a full recovery, you will be pleased to hear Dad stayed in hospital for only two days and is now back with his wife in their care home. Kate Bailey
Transition Sudbury Event
The next event offered by Transition Sudbury and District will be a talk on “Skills for Sustainable Living” by Sarah Partridge from Orchard Barn on Friday, May 19th at St John’s Methodist Church, Sudbury, CO10 0NE, 6.30 for 7.00 p.m. Orchard Barn offers courses in traditional skills and natural building, using a variety of materials, and demonstrates how learning from the past can help us build a greener future for a healthier environment. Tickets for this event, priced at £3 per person, will be available from Lesley Ford-Platt on 01787 372171 or on the door. A recent Swap Shop in Great Cornard - now titled ‘Give and Take’ to more closely resemble what happens - was a great success, thanks to the number of people who brought in useful items which they no longer needed, for others take away. A vast quantity of household goods, books, clothing, gardening items and kitchen equipment, etc., were delivered and almost all of the items were taken away for use in other households. Some good quality warm coats were taken away to be given to the guests at Sudbury Community Kitchen, and the remaining goods were then collected for donation to the animal rescue charity Seesaw. Nothing went to waste! The intention of Give and Take is that useful goods are not needlessly thrown away when they can benefit other people. Not only is this a good way of recycling, but it reduces the amount of things going into landfill. So it is very much a win:win way of supporting the ideals of Transition – recycle, re-use and live more sustainably!

Need help relaxing?
Have you ever considered an Indian Head Massage? This can provide instant relief from tension and stress symptoms and also promote high levels of alertness and concentration. It can also increase the available level of serotonin, which is a chemical in the body that positively affects emotions and thoughts. As a qualified practitioner I offer a relaxing holistic treatment. With Indian Head massage I work on the head, face, neck, shoulders and arms. A good Indian Head Massage should make you feel tranquil, peaceful, serene and more relaxed and able to cope with the everyday stresses of life. An Indian head massage can also promote a healthy scalp and hair. An ancient therapeutic treatment that has been practiced in India for thousands of years, it is a deep massage, which uses a variety of techniques to tap into your Chakras (paths of energy) and encourage healing and balance in your whole body. I also practice Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki. Reiki is a Japanese concept translated as “Universal Life Energy,” which flows through all living things. Reiki is a gentle, but effective form of hands on healing. By using the Reiki energy it can be a calming, very relaxing and a simple and practical way of helping our bodies in their own healing process. Exciting news! I am now practicing Hopi Ear Candling (Thermo auricular therapy). This safe, effective and relaxing treatment is a natural and simple way to cleanse the ears, nose and throat which can help improve conditions like Sinusitis, Otitis, headaches and migraines. The 45 minute treatment includes the ear candling followed by a 10 minute pressure point and lymphatic drainage massage. The candle when lit causes the rising air inside the candle to create a mild suction from the lack of oxygen, which can help loosen ear wax or congestion. I started offering holistic treatments a year ago after many years of receiving and enjoying the benefits. Holistic treatments are more in sync with individual lifestyles and can identify the imbalances which may lead to some negative effects to health. As I’m expanding my services in the coming months there are plans to have premises in the town centre of Hadleigh. I look forward to welcoming both existing clients and new. Evening and daytime appointments are available and if required home visits can be arranged. Gift vouchers are also available. HIDDEN GARDENS of HADLEIGH
Hadleigh and District Garden Club
Wednesday April 12th If you are looking for somewhere that has a great choice of quality plants which are very reasonably priced then Paugers Plant Nursery at Depden just outside Bury St Edmunds is just the place to go. They offer over 1500 different varieties of plants and shrubs, as well as box and yew topiary. There are also 'hard to find' and unusual plants, as members of Hadleigh and District Garden club found when we made our visit there last month. The nursery has been open since 2002 and is run by Paul and Geraldine Arnold, and their own beautiful garden shares the site with the nursery. Their dedication shows in the careful layout of the nursery and the really healthy plants which are on offer. We were really spoilt for choice and everyone came away with a little something they could find a spot for in their own garden. Word has obviouly got around as our members were only some of the many people there that afternoon. We made our way there by car and travelled through some lovely Suffolk villages, and were rewarded with the sight of a hare lolloping leisurely across the country lane ahead of us. The nursery is somewhere that many of our members had not visited before and I know that some are already planning a return visit. Monday May 8th May sees us back in Hadleigh at the town hall on Monday 8th at 7.30pm when our guest speaker, Rob Tibbs, will be sharing his expertise on patio planting. The competition for that evening will be one flowering pot plant. The cost is £3 for non members and £1 for members, to include refreshments. We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman
East Anglian Garden Group
Simon White from Peter Beales Roses gave his talk, The Romance of Old Roses, to a full hall at Hitcham at our last meeting of the season, before the autumn talks resume on the 7th of October. Simon is the director of the nursery, and has been with them for 36 years. His expert knowledge inspired us all, telling us about the various cultivars in their family groups, with recommendations regarding position, fragrance and disease resistance. He brought along various products, some developed exclusively at the nursery, which would promote the very best rose growth, quite a few members went away armed with these, and there were a lot of sales of rose bushes too! We were given ideas for other plants to complement the rose border, and shown his plans for the future development of the nursery at Attleborough. An excellent talk, enjoyed by all. April sees the start of our summer outings. The first one, on 27th April, is to Ousden Gardens. In the morning, there will be a tour of the Dip on the Hill garden, and in the afternoon, Ousden House, where the tour will be given by the owner or Head Gardener. Transport will be by car. On May 20th, the outing will be to Cambridge Botanic Garden plant fair, and will be either by car, or coach depending on numbers, and on June 4th, we will be going to Spencers, at Great Yeldham, a romantic garden laid out by Lady Anne Spencer, with renovation by Tom Stuart-Smith. All the details of trips, prices and times can be found on the website, trips are open to non- members, and we welcome new members, so do please contact the secretary, Matt Long, 01449 741551, for further information. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Down to Earth ...with Dave The seed and plant sowing time has finally arrived. The various brassica plants are now well established on the allotment, planted in neat rows and covered with the upturned bottomless florist's flowerpots that I have used with much success for many years. They keep the pigeons and rabbits off the small plants and make watering much easier. The lack of any rain is a bit of a nuisance this year, with the watering can having to be used quite a bit. The first rows of early potatoes are in and earthed up, just in case we get a late frost. Various rows of seeds have been sown, including spinach, chard, carrots and parsnips. With a little bit of sun it is amazing how quickly the little spinach seedlings begin to show, though the parsnips will take longer to germinate. The daffodils are finished for this year, what a lovely show they have put on everywhere. Only snap off any dead heads and definitely don't cut off or tie up the foliage, it can look a bit untidy if they are growing in a lawn, but just mow around them for a while. We have had our first picking of asparagus, not many yet as the bed desperately needs a good soaking of rain. Back at home the hostas, overwintered in their smart new row of matching pots, have appeared as if by magic, pushing through the slate chipping mulch and growing at a terrific rate. They will get regular watering and a liquid feed once a week to keep them looking good. By growing them in large pots we don't seem to have many slug and snail problems. But I can be seen out most nights with a torch and a pot of salt water, picking off any that dare to appear. Another job at home is planting up the various hanging baskets, the choice of plants is vast. Most garden centre outlets have offers of suitable plants for about a pound a pot. Depending on the size of the basket and the size of the plants, you can fit six or seven plants into a basket, trailing ones round the side and a more upright one in the centre, use a general purpose compost with a little sharp sand mixed in with it. I always put a plastic flowerpot saucer in the bottom of the basket to act as a water reservoir. Once planted, hang the basket in a shaded, protected position to allow the plants to become settled into their new home. Then, after a couple of weeks, move it to its more exposed position for the summer months. Regular watering and a weekly feed should give a good show. If you have a suitable spot why not try a basket of cherry tomatoes? Three plants in a 14 inch basket will give loads of lovely fruit during the summer months. A wide choice of plants is available, just make sure that you choose a trailing type rather than a cordon type. That's all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan Update
We should like to thank all those residents and businesses who have responded to the surveys and questionnaires we have sent out, and to all those who have chatted to us at one of our ‘pop-ups’ over the last year. We are now in the process of drafting the plan using all the evidence we have gathered. We have been held back a little as the publication of Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s new Joint Local Plan has taken longer than expected, although we are assured that the draft is due to appear in July. Meanwhile in February the Government produced a White Paper on Housing which proposes to strengthen the role of Neighbourhood Plans. It’s important for a Neighbourhood Plan to include a Character Assessment, which is a document that describes the appearance and feel of a town. It’s the result of a walk-around exercise, observing, identifying and recording the distinct character of an area. We have chosen the Castle Road area as our pilot scheme, and a group of local residents have volunteered to ‘walk around’ and record its key features. We are very grateful for their assistance and would welcome any offers of help with other areas of the town. Our website address is www.hadleighnp.onesuffolk.net or there is a link at the bottom of the Town Council’s website page for the plan. We shall be at the Hadleigh Show so do come along and say hello!
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have secured over £430,000 in grants to help local communities deliver housing in their area
This funding will help communities build the capacity to identify housing need and housing potential in their area and bring community led developments forward. As the first instalment of a five year funding programme from the DCLG, this capacity will allow community led developments to be identified and developed with additional funding over the next four years. The funding, which totals £189,741 for Babergh and £225,476 for Mid Suffolk, was secured from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). The higher sum was secured for Mid Suffolk due to analysis by the DCLG on the number of second homes in each district. In addition a further £15,000 has been secured for each district (totalling £30,000) from the DCLG’s Custom Build Programme. Both funding streams are part of the government’s national £3bn home building fund announced in the Autumn Statement last year. Council officers are currently looking at a number of ways to best use the funding to empower communities to build this capacity. The councils will work closely with community-led housing groups and other stakeholders – such as the Community Land Trusts network and the Home and Communities Agency – to put the right tools in place to ensure efficient delivery of new houses over the coming years. The Lavenham Community Land Trust is an example of one of these groups in action, who have obtained planning permission for a new housing scheme in Harwood Place, Lavenham with Partners Hastoe Housing Association. This new funding will allow other communities across Babergh and Mid Suffolk to follow this example and bring forward housing in their areas. Tom Barker, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ Assistant Director – Planning for Growth, said: “With a growing and aging population our housing needs are changing across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. This funding will help communities to identify potential housing in their area, putting more power in the hands of the people who know our towns and villages best”.

Fed up with hard water and lime scale? Fitting a water softener will save you money and time
East Anglia has some of the hardest water in Great Britain. The scale build up on shower screens and taps, that ring of scum in the basin, and limescale in kettles are some of the visible consequences of hard water. We have to resort to using large amounts of washing powder, conditioner, extra salts in the dish washer and expensive bathroom cleaning products to overcome the dreaded scale. In my professional capacity I’ve replaced countless appliances that should have had a longer service life. Scale blocks water ways in boilers and hot water pipes. Heating elements in hot water cylinders and electric showers get encrusted and fail. All these problems can be solved by fitting an ion exchange water softener. Laundered clothes will feel softer, after showering your skin will feel smoother, you’ll use far less detergents and the adverse effects on your plumbing system will start to reverse. If you would like to know more, give me a call. I’m happy to show you a simple 15 minute demonstration and provide an installation survey. A typical installation can be done in one day. Ring Nick Marno at Brett Valley Installations on 01206 337316 or 07896 054439 or email nickmarno@tiscali.co.uk

The Battle of Arras Continues
In this article we remember: Alexander Albert Keeble Percy - 26 April 1917 John William Tricker – 12 May 1917 Robert Skinner - 22 May 1917 Claude William Goat - 23 May 1917 William Rolfe – 29 May 1917 A number of Hadleigh men served with the 2nd Suffolks during the battle of Arras and were billeted in the Wellington chalk caves under the Arras suburbs; a location which is open to visitors today. In the early hours of 9 Apr 17 the 2nd Suffolks emerged from the caves and by 6 am they had taken their first key objective, a strong point known as the HARP. Throughout the days that followed the battalion took their turn in the front line trenches. Towards the end of April and into May they were in a maze of trenches to the east of the village of Monchy-le-Preux and it was here that two Hadleigh men were killed in action; Private Alexander Albert Keeble Percy on 26 April and Private John ‘Jack’ William Tricker on 12 May. Both were recruits who were probably sent to join the regular battalion towards the end of the 1916 battle of the Somme. Alexander Percy was born in Benton Street in 1893 and in 1911 was working as grocer’s assistant and enlisted in October 1915, he has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Arras Memorial. Jack Tricker was 34 and ten years older than Percy, he was born in Holton St Mary and for over fifteen years had worked at the White Lion Hotel in Hadleigh as the “boots”, a livein servant who would clean the guests shoes and carry out many other similar tasks. At the end of 1915 he married Ethel Green of Hadleigh, he then most likely enlisted under the Lord Derby Scheme being mobilised in March 1916. He was wounded, probably on the Somme when the 2nd Suffolks were at Serre in November 1916, but returned to active service for the Arras offensive. His body was recovered and he is buried at the Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery. During the Great War, Field Ambulances were mobile front line medical units manned by troops of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). Each army division had its own field ambulance. Hadleigh born Private Robert Skinner was with the 2/3rd Home Counties Field Ambulance attached to the 58th Division. Robert was born in 1878 and brought up in Angel Street. By 1901 he had followed his elder sister to Staines in Middlesex and was working as a brewery labourer and later worked in a
linoleum factory. He married and had five children. He enlisted with the RAMC in April 1915. The 58th Division was initially involved in east coast defences in England, then going to France in January 1917 and was held in reserve until the Battle of Arras was almost over. During May the 58th Division was brought into action on the Hindenburg Line with the field hospital at Behagnies to the south east of Arras. It was here that Robert was killed when a shell hit a dressing station. Robert Skinner was buried close by at Mory Abbey Military Cemetery. He is remembered on Staines War Memorial, but not at Hadleigh. Later his young family moved to Derby. Claude William Goat was born in Hadleigh in April 1897 and lived and went to school in Bridge Street. In the 1911 census he was living with his eldest sister who was then married and living in Turret Lane, Ipswich, he gave his surname as Wright, which was the married name of his mother in a previous marriage. Perhaps the name William Goat took some living with! There are some indications that he had enlisted with the Suffolk Regiment in early 1915 when he was just seventeen. What seems clear is that by August 1916, as the casualties on the Somme battlefield increased, Private Claude William Wright was drafted to serve with the 13th Battalion the Essex Regiment. Early in the war this battalion had been raised as ‘Pals’ battalion in east end of London and was known as the ‘West Ham’ pals. During the Somme offensive the original volunteers became so depleted that reinforcements had to come from further afield. It seems almost certain that Claude was with the 13th Essex in the freezing water logged trenches during the failed attacks around Serre on 13 November 1916. He remained with the battalion and took part in the Battle of Arras, but was seriously wounded, probably on 28th April during an attempt to take the village of Oppy. He was taken to No 22 General Hospital at Camiers where he died. He was subsequently buried at Etaples Military Cemetery close to the French coast. For reasons that are unclear he is not on the Hadleigh War Memorial, but is remembered by his birth name of Claude Goat on the roll of honour in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. The 8th Suffolks were part of the 18th Division of the British Army and had had some success during the battle of the Somme. During the opening weeks of the Arras battle they had been held in reserve well behind the front line. On the 3 May 1917 they were brought forward and into action and captured for a short time the village of Cherisy, 8 miles to the east of Arras. For the rest of the month the 8th Suffolks returned to divisional reserve closer to Arras but were still in the range of the enemy’s artillery and it was while in reserve that Private William Rolfe was killed by an enemy shell. He was born in Upper Layham in 1883 and given the name Willie. He enlisted with the West Suffolk Militia in 1902 and served for 6 years. In 1913 he married Ethel Skinner and moved to 11 New Cut in Hadleigh, where they had a daughter. Exactly when he re-joined the army is unclear, but it does seem that he was present during the battle of the Somme. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Arras Memorial and on the Layham and Hadleigh war memorials. The progress of the 1/5th Suffolks and the loss of Fred Goody will be covered in a later edition. (Researched by Mark Brennan, Nigel Crisp, Jeff Ward. http://www.hadleighww1.com)

GREAT WAR NEWS MAY 1917 Wed 4 Apr - Judging distances occupied the attention of the Hadleigh Corps of Volunteers [equivalent to Home Guard] last Sunday afternoon – some useful work was accomplished. A very successful variety entertainment was given at the Town Hall on Friday evening in aid of the Church Army Fund for providing huts for our soldiers. There was a full house, and the manner in which the long programme was carried out reflected great credit upon the performers and afforded a considerable amount of pleasure to the large audience. (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)
Wed 30 May - Empire Day was observed in the schools by the salutation of the flag, lessons in citizenship and by carrying out a programme of patriotic songs, recitations, etc. Advantage was taken of the day to hold a public demonstration in connection with the Food Economy Campaign at the Market Place.

So now Easter’s out the way and the chocolate binge is over is it time to think about summer holidays, BBQs, garden and beach parties..? Will you feel happy in your skin or has the chocolate feast got you craving even more? These habits can be broken with a little determination although you might experience a few symptoms similar to withdrawal. Thankfully the worst should be over quite quickly. After 10 – 14 days your body starts to realise that it’s ok without its sugar/chocolate/alcohol fix and you should start to feel many benefits which include sleeping better and having more energy. You may even lose a few pounds into the bargain! Our lifestyle & eating patterns have changed dramatically over the last few decades and had a major impact on our waistlines. Processed foods and takeaways have become a regular part of our lives and we are paying the price with obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc all increasing as a result. All these conditions (and others) can be improved by maintaining a healthy weight. There have been many cases of Type 2 Diabetes being reversed with the need for medication becoming unnecessary. Would you want to have to rely on a cocktail of medication (sometimes for the rest of your life) to keep you healthy when you could take control of your own health by losing some weight. If you feel the need to break those habits and lose some weight (average weight loss is a stone a month*) into the bargain why not try Cambridge Weight Plan..? Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support, particularly important at the start of the process. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre
Summer at last and we are in full swing. I love having my door hooked back so that I can see what’s going on outside. I think my riders like it too. Piles of shed horsehair refuse to be swept up neatly and annoy Lyn, who likes our yard to look spotless. She has been Springcleaning recently and tidying the stores. (So its not a gypsy encampment you can see in the photo, only Lyn on the warpath.) My room houses little Babs of course and the hoist, three sets of mounting steps, a day bed, disco lighting and some interesting toys but we keep it pretty tidy. It will soon be full of cakes! I like the smell: kind people bring in their baking ready for the Hadleigh Show on May 20th where The Shelley Centre has a stand selling wonderful plants and, hopefully, masses of cakes for visitors to buy. Do come and support us with your custom, all the money raised will help keep me (and my live friends) in the manner to which we are accustomed! Talking of keeping us going, we were very pleased to welcome Alan Fosker of the Brett Valley Lodge in Hadleigh, who came to present us with a fat cheque just before Easter. He can be seen giving it to Chris, with Alfie in attendance. Alan came to watch me in action too, so he gets a big vote of approval from me, and our thanks for his personal sponsorship of two races on the April race night. Are any of my readers race winners, I wonder? On May 6th some of our riders will be joining us for an Own A Pony day. Watch this space for photos in my next blog. Till then thank you for your company and enjoy yourselves! Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.htm. Telephone: 01473 824172

Dear Sir, Carelessly I scratched my car when putting it into my garage, about a nine inch scratch on the wheel arch, I was very unhappy to say the lease. I always if possible like to deal locally and noticed an advert in the HCN for Chips Away, they gave me a price and I duly took my car to Lady Lane, where Peter assured me he could make it as good as new. FOR ALL YOUR SKIP HIRE NEEDS
Dear Sir, Further to last month's edition of HCN, I would like to thank Councillor Kathryn Grandon for the part she has played in protecting East House Meadow (known also as Cox’s Park) from the imminent sale of East House; the former community building on George Street. As someone who regularly enjoys this beautiful and much valued green space inside Hadleigh, the present outcome is a welcome alternative to the original proposal put forward by Babergh District Council that included building on the land outside of the fence of East House i.e. the park itself. I would also like to thank everyone in the community too who supported the ‘Save Cox’s Park’ campaign. This positive outcome would not have materialised without the determined efforts and voluntary time put in by those who coordinated and everyone who supported the campaign. Many hours were spent completing petitions, filling in forms with testimonies (and photos) as evidence for the Town Green Public Enquiry - and not least, spreading the word! Despite, for technical reasons, not being successful at getting the park legally registered as a Town Green, the publicity the application generated, significantly helped to raise the profile of the issue and so persuade those in power that this land was too valuable to be taken from the community. I think we should all take pride in the knowledge that our combined efforts did make a difference to the future of our park. And let us not forget the children who campaigned too and made newspaper headlines, proving that you are never too young (or old) to make a difference to the world we live in. Becky Grist

Georgi Wright made some very valid comments last month about the way political life often seems to descend to playground level. But she misses the point in my complaint aired in March. The actions of Hadleigh’s elected councillors should not be about me. My political future was decided a long time ago and I am a mere footnote in Hadleigh’s political history. What concerns me is the quality of the people we elect to serve us (wherever we may be). Do we want people looking back to the past or into the future? Do we want people who do things or people who go to meetings? Do we want people of probity or people who are cavalier with facts? Do we need people who can lead us, or do we need seat warmers? It’s time we applied these tests to all aspiring to become County Councillors. That was the point of my letter in March – there is no need to use me as a reference model. Our candidates should reference their own achievements and aspirations! Brian Riley
Dear Sir I read with interest Sue Monks letter concerning the pot holes in Benton Street. Although it appears that the hole was repaired in February and has now reappeared has nothing to do with the volume of traffic but the way the repair with probably carried out, a shovel full of warm asphalt in a water filled pothole cannot be described as a repair. The hole needed to be cut out then lined and filled, and finally rollered flat and levelled .I remember my headmaster telling me that "a job worth doing is a job worth doing properly" clearly the council does not adopted that approach, a good example being the middle of the pedestrian crossing on Tayler Road where you will find around six poorly filled
P holes which keep breaking up. Surely its more cost effective to do the full repair once than to keep returning to fill in the same hole. While on the subject of poor maintainance have you also noticed how many signposts and road signs have rotted at their base and toppled over , these dont appear to get replaced anymore, I think Im right in thinking that as local taxpayers we are paying for them. Chris Worsfold
Dear Sir, Thanks to Trevor Clarke and his team (one of them is my neighbour Phil!) for a fantastic disco on Saturday 15th April at Hadleigh United Football Club which got Hadleigh rocking to the sounds of the 70' 80's and 90's. It was a great night and so many worked to make that happen. Watch out for their other events, perhaps even an al fresco do. A fantastic night is guaranteed so make sure you book your tickets early. Sue Monks
Dear Sir, In recent weeks, the residents of Clopton Gardens endured daily disputations due to heavy lorries, machinery and barriers, necessary for the essential work carried out by British Gas. From my view-point, although the work was not as straightforward as was at first perceived, the National Grid, British Gas and Morrison's Construction workers have, without default, been helpful, considerate, friendly and obliging, and all with a cheerful attitude. What a contrast then, as the estate once more fills with the drivers on school runs to the Community Primary School in Station Road. Even before lessons of the day begins children witness selfish behaviour as some drivers (not all) park without due care and attention, or thought of the hazards they are causing to other road uses and residents alike - whose daily grind is probably no less important than they perceive theirs to be. To point out a badly positioned vehicle will, as likely as not, be responded to with verbal abuse and arrogance. If only the ethics of the above mentioned could be followed here! Whichever candidate, up for election on 4th May, can convince me that they will succeed, in the very least, in persuading Suffolk County Council Highways Department to road-mark white lines across our driveways can be very sure of my vote! M. Fisher

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL
Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 16th March 2017 Present: Councillors: Sheldrick (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Cook, Fraser, Free, Haines, Haylock, Matthews, Monks, Shearly-Sanders, Whiting, Wilson, and Young. In attendance: Babergh District Councillor Grandon and three members of the public. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillor Wiltshire. This apology was accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interest. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 16th February 2017 were taken as read, and subject to changing the date of the Finance & Personnel and Environment & General Purposes Committee Reports to read 9th February 2017 were confirmed and signed. At this point the meeting was adjourned to allow a member of the public to speak on policing requirements for the town. POLICING Sgt. Miah had tendered her apologies. The Clerk reported the response received on the parking consultation. Hadleigh Town Council was thanked for their response. Unfortunately parking issues are not deemed high priority but agreement has recently been reached for the transition of on-street parking enforcement in Suffolk to be taken from the Police and given to local authorities. This change is known as a Civil Parking Enforcement and should take place within the next two years. Following the statistical information presented by Councillor Wilson at the last Town Council meeting he provided further information as it would appear that crimes against the person had increased quite considerably and would request the Police to comment on this. It was agreed that this request be passed to the Police in order that they were in a position to provide a response at the next Town Council meeting. Councillor Sheldrick, as County Councillor, reported that Tim Passmore, Police and Crime Commissioner, had attend the Suffolk County Council Meeting held today and confirmed that they were aware of concerns and were working towards a greater level of engagement with the public. Also Tim Passmore had made a request for members of the public to write directly to the Government requesting additional funding for Policing in Suffolk as he felt the County was underfunded on the national scale. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS District Councillor Grandon had provided a written report and tendered Councillor Burgoyne’s apologies due to illness. Councillor Sheldrick apologised for not providing a written report but advised that the Benton Street scheme was progressing. He would be meeting with Suffolk Highways on the 17th March to review Stone Street as there had been a number of fairly serious incidents recently. Speed Monitoring had become an issue and he had received assurances that the Speed Watch Group could monitor 20mph speed limits and these were now enforceable should there be areas in the town where they were required or already were in place. The issue of potholes in the town and the loss of the car park spaces next to East House were raised. Councillor Grandon responded to questions on the access point in Hadleigh and parking at the Hadleigh County Primary School. A request was made that in the long term the Education Department be encouraged to include the other two primary schools when allocating spaces and catchment areas for new and existing housing in the town and not concentrate on the Community Primary School. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Clerk reported: i) A thank you letter from Mr. Grandon for the loan he received. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Full Council Meetings Date of Next Meetings at 7.30pm Thursday 18th May 2017. Thursday 15th June 2017 Planning Committees Date of Next Meetings at 7.30pm Thursday 11th May 2017. London to Paris...
On the 13th September 2017, three local lads will be setting off from the heart of London on their bikes, to complete a 300+ mile cycle to the City of Love: Paris. Myself (Tom Olive), and two of my oldest and best friends, Stephen Mayes and Bill Pryor, are the somewhat optimistic trio aiming to complete the trip. As keen but relatively new cyclists, we are certainly setting ourselves a challenge, but one that we are determined to complete, both for a personal sense of achievement and most importantly, for the incredible cause we will be raising money for. In January this year, Megan Gage, one of our best friends and Stephen’s fiancé, received some devastating news about her dad’s health. Andy Gage was sadly diagnosed with terminal cancer that had spread from his oesophagus to his liver. The past few months have been an overwhelming rollercoaster of emotions, for an extremely close-knit family who have been part of the local community for years. Yet, in spite of the shock and sadness, the family has shown nothing but strength and courage in facing the news. If we can take just a fraction of that into our cycle, then I’m sure we will be just fine. In honour of this, we will be raising money for the Oncology Department of the Ipswich Hospital Charity, which does incredible work every day for both individuals suffering from cancer and their families. We all owe so much to our public services for the care they give ourselves and our loved ones, yet as a public service they unfortunately don’t have infinite funds. The money we intend to raise will be help pay for the important extras that are not covered by the NHS, such as equipment, refurbishments and support to staff and patients above and beyond what the NHS can provide. We are so very grateful to the people who have already made donations, and cannot thank people of the community enough for their generosity and kindness. However, we want to raise as much as we possibly can to make a real difference – and for that - we need your help. Growing up in Hadleigh, we have all experienced first-hand the community spirit and unity of the area, having taken part in many sponsored walks at school and fundraising activities for local sports clubs. If you could help us channel that community spirit towards a local charity that is currently helping a brave and decent man, then please see the details below on how you can make a donation, no matter how much you can spare. We will also be organising some fundraising events including a Five-a-side Football Fundraiser on a Sunday in June (date TBC). If that sounds like your kind of thing or you'd like to get involved for support, contact us using the details at the bottom of this article and we will let those interested know when a date is confirmed. We thank you so much for your support in advance, and if you see us out and about on our bikes, don’t be afraid to give us a honk or a wave. To donate: text LTPA92 plus the amount you would like to donate to 70070. For example if you would like to donate £20, text LTPA9220 to 70070. Or you can donate by visiting our JustGiving page using the following link: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Stephen-Mayes For more information on our Five-a-side Football Fundraiser, please message Stephen Mayes on Facebook using the following link: https://www.facebook.com/stephen.mayes.35?fref=ts.

St Andrew's Church, Layham Presents
Letter www.layham.org from Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council Meeting of 29 March 2017 were: • Public Forum A parishioner exercised his right to speak to the Council following several incidents involving dogs at Waterhouse Farm. He had been involved in four attacks over recent months, had reported each incident to the police, who had promised to visit the owners and provide feedback. He had heard nothing further and had written to Tim Passmore, the Police and Crime Commissioner, to register his dissatisfaction with the way the matter was being handled. It was agreed that the Clerk would also write to Mr Passmore seeking a quick resolution of the issue. • Babergh District Council’s Communities Officer With regard to affordable housing, Cllr Ward said Babergh also planned to invest in homes for shared ownership; these new homes would be located in areas where there was a known need, but would depend on availability of sites. • Suffolk County Council report Cllr Laing commented that he welcomed the new campaign – Suffolk Life Savers – which aimed to prevent suicide in the county. He asked whether there was any funding in SCC’s budget for mental health issues, apart from the national levy; Cllr Jones said the council had made provision and was looking to put a clear ‘pathway’ and single point of contact in place. • Road sweeping Advance notice had been received of the road sweeping carried out in February, and residents had moved their vehicles as requested, enabling a satisfactory job to be done. The Clerk would request a timetable for future activity. • Layham Local History Group The LLHG had received a grant of £722.48 from the Suffolk Community Foundation, some of which would be used for display boards. • Village Keeper It was agreed to accept a quotation to tidy the hedges along Mill Lane, remove ivy and damaged limbs from trees, brush cut and strim the embankment and move cuttings etc to the conservation area. • Telephone boxes It was agreed to order etched glass ‘DEFIBRILLATOR’ signs for the phoneboxes in Upper and Lower Layham. Road sweeping The road sweeping vehicle visits Upper Layham just twice each year – so, it makes sense to try to ensure that the roads are clear of vehicles on those rare occasions. THANK YOU everyone for responding to a message sent by Community Email, by word of mouth and by notes on windscreens, when the vehicle came to Upper Layham in March. What a difference that street cleaning made! We hope we will get advance notice for the next visit (September?) when we will let you know again and look forward to the same co-operation. Please Don't Leave Your Dog Bags Hanging Around! We've noticed more and more plastic dog fouling bags being tied up and then left hanging around - this is worse than not picking up at all, as the bags don't degrade and just look dreadful. There are plenty of dog bins around the village - please use them! Thank you. They deserve your thanks for offering to give time for you and your children (and dogs!). The band of heroes is now: Lester Bennett, Simon Bewsher, Colin Brown, Graham Coleman, Lizzie Cousins, Dusty Miller, John Millman, Sam Millman, James Mosely, Rosie Owers, Neil Riches, Andy Thorp and Michael Woods. The mention of ‘dogs’ above raises the thorny issue of those people who, unbelievably, let their dogs run free over the field and fail to ensure that fouling is removed. There is no excuse – there are bins at both gates so owners have to walk past them to leave the field. PLEASE – ALWAYS SCOOP THE POOP. Nettles in the Conservation Area If the conservation area was not ‘managed’ by volunteers it would be completely swamped with nettles. You may have noticed that there is an attempt to manage the nettles over about a third of the area. We know from experience that if we ‘knock them back’ on a regular basis, they are eventually suppressed. We wouldn’t want to lose them all as hundreds of insect species feed on nettles – which in turn provide food for insect-eating birds. Nettles are an important food plant for the caterpillars of some of our lovely butterflies – small tortoiseshell, peacock, red admiral and comma. They also support the caterpillars of the garden tiger moth – as lovely an insect as you will ever see. Nettles support 31 species of butterfly and moth, and many species of beetle. Meanwhile, by clearing an area, we hope to encourage the emergence of a greater range of wild flowers overall. Layham Local History Group The Annual Meeting of the LLHG was held on Tuesday 28th March. In the first year an archive has been sorted and catalogued and is now available for members to use for research. A presentation on newspaper reports featuring life in the village was held as part of the Annual Parish Meeting in April 2016. Grant support of £722 has been won from the Suffolk Community Foundation through Suffolk Rural Fund to cover the costs of staging a ‘Marriages in Layham’ exhibition in Layham Church in May. The money will be used to purchase exhibition screens, mounting materials and for the enlargement of photographs. The officers of the group were re-elected: Michael Woods as Chairman/Secretary; Jonathan Oldham as Vice-Chairman/Treasurer; Charlotte Britton as Archivist and Mary Pain and Noel Herring as committee members. If you would like to become part of the group please get in touch with Michael Woods on 823798. Marriages in Layham There will be over 100 photographs of more than 80 Layham marriages and it is very much hoped that, as a result of this exhibition another dozen or so pictures will come to light. They will all eventually be stored in the Layham Archive and will be used in years to come by family history researchers. If you have something relevant please bring it along and show us.

It is lovely to see the hustle and bustle of the town and all the gardens starting to take shape for the summer. How it puts a skip in the heart seeing all the trees and flowers in bloom and all the wildlife in full flow of busyness. At French’s we would love to welcome a volunteer or two that like to strim, trim and mow, even someone who would give our wooden buildings a lick of paint. Keeping fit and active outdoors is the way to stay healthy and keep the mind active, so why don’t you give it a go, give me a call and pop along, we would love to have you on board helping us. The phone has been busy with people calling to rehome their animals, it is sad that we cannot help more, but with little in the way of sponsors it is hard to take on the extra financial burden. If you have a spare £10+ a month to help then please do contact us, the contact details are below. We are looking forward to the Suffolk Show which French’s get an invite to on 31st May 1st June we are in the white area, stand 559, come and say hello and have some homemade cake and a cup of tea or coffee with us. This year we have also been invited to the Tendering Hundred show on 8th July. We are still waiting for the Hadleigh Show to except us, it is so sad we get turned away each year, when we are in walking distance of the show ground. We will be starting our pony - groom and ride days in May, so book your child in to spend some time with Coco, our dear little pony. I am looking to rent a property within a half hour drive of Hadleigh. I have been with my previous house landlord for the last 10+ years, but this summer my lovely home set in an 8 acre wood, is to be knocked down. Somewhere quiet or in a private location on a long let would be ideal, if you can help please call me. Would you like to be head of our media or fund raising? If you have some spare time to get involved and possibly learn new skills, or show us your skills, let’s meet and I will introduce you to our animals and the young people who have had confidence or mental health problems that we help, we would love to see you. Urgently Needed....Hay and straw for our rescued horses and Donkeys, if you or someone you know has some spare last year’s hay or straw sitting in their barn, please pass it on to us, our animals get through so much and your hay or straw would be very much appreciated. News from The Station
In this month’s article I have a lot of subjects to cover, so apologies now for over load of advice and information. The month of May sees the annual Hadleigh Show at Holbecks Park. Suffolk Police will be out in force on Friday evening, historically one of the busiest nights in the town, with the Fairground at the show open. We will have a zero tolerance to anti-social behaviour and underage drinking. There is a DPPO (Designated Public Place Order – no consumption or open bottles of alcohol within the Town) in place within the whole Town, which will be enforced. Also Section 35 (Dispersal Order) which will ban individuals from the Hadleigh Showground and Fair for up to 48 hours should they commit any unacceptable behaviour. We ask all parents to be mindful of this and to inform your children, as we will be returning them to you if they are under the influence of alcohol. Hadleigh SNT are also aware of recent public discussions concerning our parks within the town, and the amount of vandalism, litter, disrespect and verbal abuse that seems to be prevalent on a daily basis. Young families have reported loud swearing and abuse at the smaller children and intimidation, which is putting them off having fun at the parks. This is totally unacceptable behaviour. The parks in the town are for the enjoyment of the whole town, young and old, the small minority who have decided to ruin the areas for all to enjoy will be dealt with Police in a manner proportional to the behaviour witnessed. Hadleigh SNT would ask that you report any incidents that you witness in our parks so that we can deal with them at the time. Illegal Parking / Illegal use of vehicle on a Pedestrian Zone - a topic always for discussion within the town. In particular, can I draw your attention this month, to the section of George Street that runs from the rear of Partridges to the High Street. Firstly this road is ONE WAY - no entry from the High Street. Secondly it is primarily a Pedestrian Zone. The bricked area closest to Partridges glass windows is for their customers to load heavy items. Vehicles are only permitted on this section of George Street, for loading and unloading purposes. It is not a free parking zone. However, most importantly the area from the High Street to the bollards beside Greggs, forms part of the pavement and NO VEHICLES are permitted to park on the pavement. Fixed Penalty tickets of £ 30 will be issued. Vehicles are also not allowed to use this section of George Street as a cut through to the High Street. We are currently dealing with a number of incidents involving dogs. We recognise that the majority of dog owners are both responsible and courteous, but would like to take this opportunity to remind readers of the law: It is against the law to allow a dog to be out of control anywhere (including the owner’s home). This law applies to all dogs. Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it injures a person, or causes someone to fear that they might be injured. A court may also decide that your dog is dangerous if it injures another animal or causes you to feel that you may be injured whilst trying to protect your animal. The penalty for such offences can be an unlimited fine, or prison sentence, or both. If you allow your animal to injure an Assistance Dog (such as a guide dog), you can be sent to prison for up to 3 years. If your dog is worrying livestock, in certain cases it could be destroyed, you could also be financially liable for a large amount of damages– please keep dogs under close control near livestock. If you have been the victim of such an incident, or are concerned about the actions of a local dog owner, please get in touch with us. Similarly, if you need further advice on the law, please get in touch. If you are concerned about your animal’s temperament or behaviour, or feel that you cannot control your dog, please take advice from your vet without delay – prevention is better than cure. Please contact:- PCSO 3334 Georgiana Hawkes Lastly, it has been brought to our attention that businesses and shops in the town have been victims of a possible scam involving Help for Heroes and a charity boxing match. Investigations are ongoing but I would ask if anyone has any information, CCTV or indeed donated monies to this male, please contact me. Many thanks, and until next time, PCSO 3173 JULIA BIGNELL Hadleigh SNT, Hadleigh Police Station, Magdalen Road, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5AD.

Clarkes Events Disco success
After launching Clarkes Events last year I have been trying to arrange events for the town. I believe a growing town of Hadleigh needs more events for all ages and I proved this on the 15th April when I held a 70's 80's & 90's over 18s disco. The venue was the football club which worked really well as the venue. With DJ Flummpy, DJ Chubby Rhino and my self DJ Trev on the decks we filled the venue for the night as people partied till midnight. We managed to make £221 profit which has gone to Hadleigh United Football Club. We have been asked to make this a regular event so please keep your eyes peeled on the website and Facebook page too for more info as and when I have it. My next event is on the 28th May which is my second Hadleigh Yard sale. After getting comments last year I have listened and have extended the hours as people wanted longer. The other comment was the map so I have hopefully sorted this out too. Deadline to take part is on the 10th of May so if you would like to take part please download the form or pay on the website or contact me and I will send you a form. For those who do not want to have a sale grab a map and make your way around Hadleigh to visit the sales. I have got an interactive map this year so you should be able to view the map and listings on your mobile. If you would like a printed copy of the sales make sure you visit my yard sale at 85 George Street where I will have printed copies to take with you. I have been asked if I can do more events and I'm currently working on this and would like to make sure i do events for ALL ages so please keep your eyes peeled on more fun events happening soon. I would also like to say a massive thank you to all at Keith Avis for all their help selling tickets and helping with advertising too - they always help me out! See you at the yard sales. Many thanks Trev Clarke www.clarkesevents.uk tel 07787 158085

Simon Thompson, Musical Director, and his wife Sarah, who sings in the choir, tell us something about the concerts coming up: Simon: Well, we have a busy time over the next few months with our own concert in the summer and two events where we are providing musical entertainment. Firstly, we'll be at Layham church on May 13th. We’re planning something light-hearted but really varied - songs from the whole choir, smaller groups and solos, with a few different instruments playing along. Sarah: And don't forget the readings - some good funny ones. So we won't need any of your bad jokes, thank you! Simon: Hmm... anyway the theme is spring and it's in aid of church funds. Sarah: More importantly, for £7 you get drinks and nibbles afterwards too. If we're lucky with the weather it will be magical to be out in the twilight with the flowers and blossom. Simon: Talking of flowers, the next concert is on the day of the Hadleigh Open Gardens, June 10th, and forms part of the Flowers and Art Festival. As well as the gardens and art exhibitions, we'll be rounding off the day with a concert in the URC, with the Elmsett Silver Band. What a cultural feast! Sarah: I've noticed you coming up with a few garden-related songs. Hopefully 'Flowers in the Rain' won't be too apt! Simon: So those two will be fairly light - mostly unison singing which makes it good fun to perform. Then we'll be pulling out all the stops for our own concert in July. Lots of full harmony pieces and hopefully a few solos. And not forgetting Graham who will be doing his usual fantastic tinkling of the ivories. Sarah: I think people will be a little bit surprised by one or two numbers. I think we have a very varied selection from classical to, well, really up to date. Great fun at rehearsals and keeps us on our toes. Simon: Well, let's not give too much away. People will just have to come and see - or hear - for themselves. In summary: Music for a Spring Evening: Layham church, Saturday 13th, 7.30pm. Tickets £7 in advance or on the door. Contact Sonia 01473 822220 or Sallie 01473 823338. English Country Garden concert: Hadleigh United Reform Church, Saturday June 10th, 7.30pm. Tickets £5 in advance from The Idler or Avis or on the door. Hadeigh Community Choir summer concert: Hadleigh United Reform Church, Saturday July 8th, 7.30pm. Tickets details still to be decided. If you have trouble getting hold of tickets for any event for any reason, please contact anyone you know in the choir or John 01473 823791 or Stella 01473 823477. To avoid disappointment, please buy in advance as we may sell out
Elgar’s ‘Dream of Gerontius’ An Evening of Divine Enchantment
Support group for those
LIVING
with loss
Gippeswyk Singers and Beccles Choral Society proudly present Elgar's choral masterpiece to delight music lovers in Suffolk this Spring. Prepare to have your heart strings tugged by the sheer beauty and emotion of what is considered to be Elgar's finest choral work. This exciting musical event brings together 200 musicians including 2 choirs from the north and south of Suffolk, joined by the Lambeth Orchestra at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on Saturday 13th May, 2017 at 7:30 pm. Geoff Lavery brings his formidable talent and experience as a musical director and conductor to the production which features soloists Claire Weston (former principal soprano with ENO), Richard Edgar-Wilson (internationally acclaimed tenor) and Philip Tebb (outstanding oratorio bass soloist). Elgar wrote the "The Dream of Gerontius" in 1900. The work is set to a poem by John Henry Newman that describes a soul's journey through death to find enlightenment and the glory of God, guided by an Angel. Elgar himself said, "This is the best of me. I have written my heart's blood into the score." Be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment and to experience what promises to be a unique and memorable performance of Elgar's "Dream" in Suffolk's stunning world class concert hall. Tickets are now on sale (£10 - £22) from Sarah Bush (tel: 01508 480462) or Snape Maltings Box Office (tel: 01728 687110). SKy Watch
by Neil Norman
The nights are well and truly lengthening now as we race on wards towards Summer Solstice next month (half the year gone already!). Since I last wrote, we have had two comets in the pre-dawn sky go into outburst (A sudden and rapid brightening) and almost become naked eye objects, but not quite. More on those later.... So now for the monthly notes. The Sun May 10th, Rise 05.09, Set 20.36; May 15th, Rise 05.01, Set 20.43; May 20th, Rise 04.54, Set 20.51; May 25th, Rise 04.48, Set 20.58; May 30th Rise 04.43, Set 21.04. The Moon Full 10th May, New 25th May. The Planets: Venus By the months end, those of you who rise early can see it 20 minutes before Sunrise shinning brilliantly at magnitude -4.4 in the N.East direction. The planet appears large in size and pure white so cannot be mistaken. Jupiter Is a very prominent object in the evening skies, shining at a magnitude of -2.3 in the constellation of Virgo in the East-South-East sky. Again it cannot be mistaken as it is a golden yellow colour. A pair of binoculars will show you the 4 main Moons of the planet; Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa. The planet is just below the Moon on May 7th. Saturn At the start of the month it will be rising at Midnight and shinning at magnitude 0.2, meaning it is easily located and is a yellow colour. Those who need some help will find the Moon nearby on the 13th. The planet is currently in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Now to the comets. If you were out in the pre-dawn morning (and knew where to look) you would have been able to pick up 2 comets in binoculars; C/2015 ER61 and the newly discovered C/2017 E4. The image here is of C/2014 E4 taken by its discoverer and good friend of mine, Terry Lovejoy (Brisbane, Australia). The comet was only discovered on March 9th this year as it raced in to a perihelion point of 0.4 AU on May 24th. It was expected to be a dim comet, reaching only magnitude 10 at best, meaning the use of a telescope would be needed to see it, but then it suddenly brightened up to magnitude 6 in the course of 3 days. For this to happen the comet must have had some trauma to the nucleus. The nuclei of a comet is a very delicate thing, loosely held together lumps of ice and rock that can easily fall apart when subjected to the heat of the Sun as they approach perihelion in their orbits. You will note that the comet appears green in colour. This can only be detected by cameras as the have a far greater sensitivity to light than our eyes. To the visual observer the comet would appear like a white smudge against the black sk . The green colour is caused by the gas diatomic carbon, which is very abundant in comets, and glows green when it is subjected to increasing charged electrical particles from the Sun, known as the Solar Wind. It is this 'wind' that also causes the comet to form a tail. This comet was last in the vicinity of the Sun some 17,000 years ago. That's all for this month, do try to get out and gaze up, especially as we enter into BBQ season! Until next month, Clear Skies! Neil Norman FRAS Any questions or queries - neilnorman03@gmail.com

SULLY (12A)
Fasten your seatbelts - you are about to witness a riveting true life drama. On & 25th January 2009 Captain Chesley & “Sully” Sullenberger (played in our film by Tom Hanks) became a national hero & & & & & & & & & as he guided a stricken A320 Airbus with 155 passengers down onto the & & & & & & Hudson River. Three minutes after take-off from New York City’s La the a flock of Canada geese and & Guardia & & Airport, & & & plane & struck & consequently lost all engine power. The A320 pilot's decision was how to safely bring his craft down and save the lives of his passengers. The incredible emergency landing unfolds in our film, which is directed by Clint Eastwood, with many critics calling this Tom Hanks 's finest role to date – allowing us to forget that we are watching an actor. This is nail-biting cinema with the plane finally making its successful ditching in the Hudson River and saving the lives of everyone on board. However, the pilot's world-wide acclaimed achievement led to his superiors questioning whether he made the right decision – we leave you to make up your own mind on this issue! & &

The Family Heirloom that Keeps Rolling Along
A 1930s saloon which has been in the same family for more than 80 years will be among exhibits at Newton Green Golf Club’s first vintage vehicle show. The event is being staged on Sunday, August 6, to mark the 110th anniversary of the club, and as a special curtain up for the annual Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf. Members, relatives and friends are invited to provide exhibits during an afternoon that will feature cream teas and a traditional jazz band. Golfer Mick Mills who, with his wife Marilyn, have a Vauxhall 12 DY5B, originally bought new by her father’s cousin at Halstead in 1934, will be showing it at the event. In the 1950s, the black, four-seater passed for £40 to Marilyn’s father Alan Gentry, of Assington. He used it for many years while working as a lumber jack, and kept it going with spare parts from another old Vauxhall he bought for a fiver. Eventually, the car was abandoned and left to rust in Mr Gentry’s back garden. The engine was removed, put on blocks outside and started up each week. Twenty years ago, after his son carried out part restoration with a halfcompleted paint-job, he passed the vehicle to Marilyn and Mick. They found a north Essex mechanic who had worked on pre-war Vauxhall cars. He undertook a two-year restoration. A couple, who had been made redundant at an upholstery firm, took on refitting the leather interior. Marilyn recalls, “When my father, who is no longer with us, saw the restored car he had tears in his eyes. In the 1930s Vauxhall 12s were called a ‘farmer’s car’, because you had to have a bit of money to afford one. We still have the original log book, and a service manual covering the model from the thirties right through into the forties. We regard the car as a real family heirloom. “After restoring the vehicle we became members of a Vauxhall enthusiasts club for a time, and we have used the car to provide transport for a number of family weddings and other celebrations. Mick takes it out for a spin every three or four weeks to keep it going.”

Bentwaters Cold War Museum
The Bentwaters Cold War Museum will be opening its doors for 2017 on Sunday 2nd April and has become a popular attraction for visitors to the Suffolk coastal area and for those interested in aviation and military installations previously denied access to the public. The museum is based in the United States Air Force (USAF) hardened command post on the former Bentwaters airbase which closed after the withdrawal of the USAF in 1993 and is believed to be the only such building open to the public in the UK and Europe. Run by volunteers from the Bentwaters Aviation Society, the building is a large bunker made available to the public to view following 3 years of work to renovate and refurbish and opened in 2007. Further information on the society can be found at www.bentwaters-as.org.uk and for the museum at www.bcwm.org.uk The main “War Operations Room” and “Battle Cabin” have been restored to original condition including the original decontamination showers and airlocks allowing members of the public to see these once top secret, high security military installations in detail in an eerie atmosphere evoking the Cold War period. Other parts of the building have been turned into exhibition rooms, covering the history of RAF Bentwaters from W.W.II until the base closed in 1993. Included in this are histories of the units that operated from the airfield, particularly the 81st Fighter Wing. Also included is the other airfield which was part of the “twin base” complex - RAF Woodbridge, again covering the period from W.W.II until the present day. Of particular interest to families is a detailed timeline display of the Cold War which has proven of great help to those studying this period at school. Further exhibition rooms feature information on the “Special Operations/Rescue Squadrons” C that were based at RAF Woodbridge, and also the “Aggressor” Squadron based at Bentwaters. Outside are the aircraft exhibits where the RAF Harrier and Phantom can be seen, and are joined by the USAF A-10 Warthog which was a familiar sight in the skies over Suffolk when this iconic type operated from Bentwaters and Woodbridge. There is plenty of car parking space and the museum is suitable for all ages and has the added benefit of being an ideal all weather visitor attraction. Plans for 2017 will see airframes continue to undergo work to bring them up to museum standard and it is expected some will be completed by the end of the year. The café and shop continues to be a great success offering light refreshments and souvenirs and card payment facilities. Following on from the success of previous years, the open dates for 2017 have now been finalised and the museum will continue to open on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month and Bank Holiday Sundays & Mondays, from April until October. Included is the return of the Night Live event when the museum is opened in the evening and re enactments are held alongside floodlit aircraft popular with photographers. Further information for the museum can be found at www.bcwm.org.uk Building 134, Bentwaters Parks, Rendlesham, Woodbridge, IP12 2TW Tel: 07588 877020. info@bcwm.org.uk

Emphatic Win for Stoke by Nayland Seniors
Stoke by Nayland started their 2017 Essex Seniors Championship campaign with an emphatic 10.5 – 0.5 win at home against The Notleys. New Essex Golf Union rules for this competition meant that players had to go out in handicap order. On this occasion it meant that all of the Stoke team had to give shots to their opponents with the exception of Steve Tree in the last match who neither gave, nor received shots. The match was played in cool, blustery conditions on the Constable course which had become very firm due to the lack of any recent meaningful rain. Richard Cross gave the home team a good start, winning his match 3 &2 and this was followed by the only halved match, the remaining nine games all going to the home side. Results of note were an 8 & 6 victory for Steve Tree over visiting Captain Mike James and a 6 & 5 win for Mike Moore. Despite the margin of the victory, all matches were played in an excellent spirit and visiting Captain, Mike James, congratulated Stoke on the victory and wished them well in the next round. Stoke Team: Richard Cross, John Smith, Andy Higginson, Trevor Samways, Allan Smith, Graham Vandervord, Tony Carman, Reg Reid, Paul Sandfield, Mike Moore, Steve Tree.

Hadleigh Tyre Group We would like to wish Paul Warner, our long serving Manager at Hadleigh all our very best wishes as he embarks on new ventures. Paul Norman (Lofty) who also has many years service, is the new Manager and along with our dedicated team, welcomes all our regular as well as new customers.
Stoke by Nayland travelled to a windswept Burnham on Crouch to play the first round of the 2017 Jubilee Cup. In the Jubilee Cup the teams are comprised of 12 players; of which 6 will be in the handicap range 12- 16 and 6 in the handicap range 17 - 24. Matches are played in a matchplay format and consist of 6 single games, played off scratch, between players of the first group and 3 Four Ball Better Ball games played between players of the second group. Teams compete, initially, in leagues before reaching the knockout stages. Stoke ended the singles with five wins and a half point before going on to clinch victory with two wins in the paired format. This was a very pleasing win for Captain Richard Bland, especially playing away from home and in cold and windy conditions on an exposed course.

Hadleigh United Football Club
Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk The arrival of May sees the end of another football season at the Millfiled in which a young Hadleigh side have battled hard over the past nine months. A busy summer is in prospect with new modern floodlights being installed and a veterans team taking to the field next season. Friday 26th May sees former England legend Sir Geoff Hurst appearing at the football ground in a special evening which is expected to attract a capacity crowd at the all ticket event. The first team have had difficult matches over the end of March and beginning of April. Brantham won by three goals at the Millfield before the trip to Thetford resulted in a defeat by five goals to two. A superb win against Gorleston by two goals to one was followed by a defeat at Long Melford by the same score. Our young Reserve team gained a splendid draw at Halstead before a thrilling encounter at Woodbridge resulted in a narrow defeat by four goals to three. The Youth Team gained an excellent draw at Felixstowe. In the next match our youths scored ten goals against Stowmarket without reply. Great stuff. Bad news is that backroom stalwart Lee Day is in hospital at present. We are all thinking of him and hope to see him at the Millfield again soon. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Neil Henderson and Matthew Pryor. The winner of the Ground Improvement Fund was Keith Avis. The draws were made at the Gorleston game. Terry Adams
