Suffolk’s Greatest Gig! 50 years after the legendary Led Zeppelin concert at St. Matthew’s Baths in Ipswich, often described as “Suffolk’s Greatest Gig” a limited-edition poster featuring photographs taken at the concert has been published, with the profits going to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. The pictures were taken by Nigel Rea, who at the time was working as a director/cameraman for BoultonHawker Films based at Hadleigh. “I remember smuggling my camera in because there were rumours that Led Zeppelin’s manager had been confiscating cameras and putting them in a bucket of water. The negatives remained in my attic for nearly 30 years until a bootleg of the concert was discovered which put the gig in the spotlight. Some of the pictures have never been published before.” The band had just returned from touring Japan and the USA and came to Ipswich to fulfil a long-standing booking in support of their 4th album. Described as a very intimate gig, the swimming pool had been boarded over and the pictures show just how small the stage was for one of the world’s biggest bands. The band are depicted at various stages during the concert with Jimmy Page playing a double-necked Gibson guitar and later playing his guitar with a violin bow. There is also an acoustic set with the band members sitting at the front of the stage with the audience standing within touching distance of the rock legends. The poster also has the set list from the night which changed from gig to gig. The 15 songs promoting their 4th album included the first outings of Stairway to Heaven, two very rare encore performances of Weekend and Gallows Pole. This limited-edition poster costs £20 and will be available from Keith Avis in Hadleigh from 5th November with profits donated to EACH.

The Committee is pleased to announce that the voucher scheme will continue again this year and it is hoped to return to the value of 2 years ago - £11 per person. Distribution will commence early in December and anyone who qualifies, has not received one previously and would like one this year should apply before NOVEMBER 15th. Applicants after this date will not receive a voucher until Christmas 2022. To be eligible you must have attained the age of 70 by December 31 2021, live in Hadleigh itself and have lived in the town for more than 6 months. Next year we will mark seventy years since the Queen’s accession to the throne, following the death of King George VI in 1952. This is a landmark in the history of our country and its monarchy, and huge efforts are underway to commemorate it suitably. Here in Suffolk, led by the Lord Lieutenant’s Office and the Suffolk Community Foundation, the plan is to combine the anniversary with a broader “Festival of Suffolk” spread over several months, in what Lady Euston calls “a great coming back together for everyone”. The Festival will have several strands to which we as a town may choose to contribute, but the key element is that it is more than just a party after which everyone goes home – it aims to foster, in particular, the sense of community we all saw during the worst of the pandemic and use it to build a better county for all of us. You may have already heard of the “Queen’s Green Canopy”, a treeplanting campaign on a very large scale. In Suffolk, the plan is to plant one tree for every inhabitant. That’s about 770,000 trees! Other strands will focus on improving opportunities for the young people who are our county’s future, and encouraging them to lead their working lives here rather than disappear to London or Manchester, and on celebrating and promoting the beauties of Suffolk, which is not a drum-beating county like Yorkshire. That’s not all of it, but it gives you an idea. The actual Jubilee will take place over the first weekend of June – Thursday 2 June (when beacons will be lit across the country) and Friday 3 will be Bank Holidays (the usual Whitsun BH will be delayed to give one of these), and the climax will be Sunday 5 June, when a nationwide lunch party is being looked at. I very much hope that we can be part of that, and that we can draw in residents of all ages. The Queen is a very special person to the elderly in particular, but for the rest of us too – few people can remember the days before she came to the throne. If we are to make the Festival and the Jubilee special in a way that is worthy of our fine town, we need to come together to develop ideas, to plan, and finally to bring those ideas about. The Council will be looking to take the lead in all of this, but we need your imagination and your enthusiasm to make it as memorable as it ought to be – so the sooner you get any thoughts about this to me or the Town Council Manager, the better! On September 28th the Group held its much delayed Annual General Meeting (AGM) during which the attendees received updates and reports on the Group's activities since our last AGM and an outline of our aspirations and plans for the coming year, including a proposed Scout camp in Switzerland. We also held presentations to mark the individual contributions made by members of the Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer sections over the past year and displayed an inflatable kayak, together with buoyancy jackets and paddles, which had been kindly donated to the Group earlier in the year by Peter & Julie Bamford, for which the Group was very grateful.

It’s the most wonderful time. The Christmas Present Trust would like to thank everyone who supported our fundraising weekend in September. Over the three days we made £883 profit, mainly thanks to the sale of the Hadleigh Tea Towel (pictured), designed by Diz Andrews at Stuart Morris Textiles. We are pleased to announce that by the time you read this will have another 250 for sale – you will be able to purchase them at £8 each or two for £15 from Partridges or direct from us at the Hadleigh Market, St Mary’s Farmers Market (first Friday of the month) and the Christmas Fayre at the Old School House on the last weekend in November. Alternatively, you can email us at christmas.present.trust@gmail.com. The Christmas Present Trust exists to provide a free traditional meal (or dietary alternative) and entertainment to anyone in Hadleigh or the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day. We are still not sure how this year’s event will take place, but we are anticipating holding the event in the Ansell Centre for those who wish to come along, whilst also offering a delivery service for those who are still a bit unsure. Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers Our November walk on Saturday 13th will be from Ipswich back into Hadleigh with a break at Hintlesham. We will catch the 1000 bus from Hadleigh towards Ipswich (Coop side on Magdalen Rd) and get off at Red House on the Hadleigh Rd entering Ipswich. We will then walk into Sproughton and along the river Gipping to Bramford. From there we will walk across country to Burstall and then to The George pub at Hintlesham, a distance of around 6.5 miles. At that point some will carry on walking back to Hadleigh a distance of about 4 miles or, alternatively, may catch the hourly bus back from outside the George departing 40 minutes after the hour. The walk is a pleasant one and the terrain is very straightforward. The Gipping stretch can be muddy if there has previously been lots of rain but is easily passable. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. Yarn Worx Have you visited our yarn shop yet? We are located on the industrial estate in Hadleigh which means we have plenty of free parking. Since opening we have had lots of customers visit us from far and wide. On the same day recently we had one customer come from Devon and another from Milton Keynes. Our first Learn to Knit course was a roaring success with 7 people attending. Each of them had a very enjoyable day and went away with lots of goodies and some newly learnt skills. We are busy planning lots of new classes for the new year and will soon have a dedicated page on our website (yarnworx.com) with all of the details. With Christmas fast approaching we are busy putting together some new gifts for the knitter or crocheter in your life. We will also shortly be launching this years Christmas Eve Box. Do pay us a visit to grab one of these! Thank you to everyone that has dropped in to see us so far. It has been fantastic to see the reaction from customers when they first see our wall of colour at the back of the shop. A reminder that our knit groups take place on a Tuesday evening from 7pm to 9pm and on a Thursday morning from 10am to 1pm. Entrance is charged at £4 which covers tea, coffee and cake. Elmsett Primary School At Elmsett C of E Primary School our aim is to ensure that all pupils are given opportunities to ‘be the best they can be’. This September we joined the Ipswich and St Edmundsbury Multi Academy Trust and look forward to a successful partnership.
With everyone returning after the summer, where they were once again allowed to play together across the school and not in bubbles our school community has re-established itself and the children are interacting and enjoying each other’s company. We welcomed Miss Underwood as our new 5/6-year teacher and look forward to her participation in our school life. Mrs Appleby our Early Years teacher is training to be a forest school leader and we hope she will be able to provide many stimulating activities for outdoor learning across the school. At present our breakfast club and after school clubs are well attended with many children enjoying a variety of clubs which currently includes drama, art, science, sports, dance and recorder. Our Friday morning sports club is a good way to start the day. The wildlife area has been completed by our PTA and the children are enjoying the use of the space and the new gazebo. The allotment with the help of parents is being transformed and we look forward to sampling some produce later in the year. Our active PTA is well supported and enables them to fund activities and resources to enrich our school. Our school is a vibrant space where the children thrive and are offered as many different experiences as possible. We offer an annual activity residential for our Year 5/6 children, we participate in Hadleigh Pyramid sport events and Schools Games within the Ipswich area. The whole school enjoys a trip to the Pantomime along with other enriching field trips to support their learning. Our school is very much part of village life and enjoys the support of the community, businesses and the groups within it. Our Open Morning We would like to invite perspective parents to join us for an open morning on Monday the 8th November 2021 from 9.00am onwards to view our vibrant school and meet the staff. Making a stand for Hadleigh’s cycle stands A few weeks ago, we came across visitors to Hadleigh who had cycled over from the campsite at Polstead. This was there first time they been to the town and commented on how easy it was to find a place to park and how beautifully maintained the planters were. Are the cycle stands the only positive thing to come out of last year’s lockdown? In 2020, there were 2 consultations about cycling in the town, one carried out by the Food Bank on Facebook (with 150 responses) and a subsequent one led by Hadleigh Cycling Club and the Town Council. All parties, including Suffolk, Babergh and Hadleigh Councils recognised that for a town of the size of Hadleigh, there was a shortage of cycle parking facilities. As a result, 4 cycle stands were installed from the Government’s Active Travel Fund to help make cycling safer and easier. And they have been well used and looked after by Hadleigh in Bloom. Hadleigh Cycling Club wants to encourage cycling and doesn’t want any barriers to anyone using a bike. We want stands in prominent visible locations where they can be easily found by visitors and thefts are unlikely. We want to see new cycle stands in the Market Place as the old ones were inadvertently removed when the seat was installed. They should be aesthetically appealing and appropriate for the location. We can all surely agree that whether you are cycling to keep fit, save money, protect the planet or because it is more convenient than starting up the car for a 5-minute journey, it is very handy to have somewhere to park your bike. Unlike the free car park issue which frustrates residents who pay their community charge to maintain a facility they don’t use; cycle stands should not be a divisive issue. The Club efforts to reduce single use plastics during the Gayford Flyer sportive has been recognised by the Plastic Free Communities Network. More news about this next month. The Club runs social rides on Sundays which usually begin at 8am (average speed 15mph) and 9.00/9.30am (12/13mph) from The George and there is a café stop. Hadleigh Hero Dog Bowza congratulates Thrift Shop volunteer Sharon Hawken on her London Marathon success Hadleigh Thrift shop volunteer Sharon, following her first marathon, proudly showed her London Marathon medal in the Hadleigh Thrift Shop. Bowza congratulated her with a paw shake. Bowza and Sharon are good friends as they meet every week in the shop. Sharon raised money by running the 26 miles and 385 yards, (official marathon distance) for the Well Child Charity. Well done Sharon, you done Hadleigh proud. Don Cox

Survey And Appointments By the time this goes to print the Practice will have completed a large number of ‘flu jabs and made a good start on Covid boosters. Sincere thanks to all at the Practice and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went smoothly both at the Practice and St Mary’s. The Patient Survey has also been scrutinised and the results analysed. Further details are available on the Practice website (see link below) or patients can obtain a hard copy from Reception. Where possible patients’ concerns are being addressed with the addition of more personnel; both medical and administrative. However, with the best will in the world, not all patients’ expectations can be met. Since the easing of Covid restriction in the Health Centre more patients are now receiving face to face appointments. Patients will be offered a telephone consultation or a face to face consultation. The Survey results also revealed some areas where patients themselves can assist. The principle one being better use of the online booking system. There will always be patients that are unable to do this but there are also a considerable number that could but do not. Better use of the simple on-line booking arrangements would free up the number of slots and reduce the queuing time for telephone callers. To make use of the online appointment system please request a log-in code at Reception. Retired GP, Dr Cullen, was not only a doctor but also an ace photographer. Evidence of the latter is now on display in the old pharmacy area inside the Practice. Photos are for sale with some of the proceeds going to the Practice’s Charitable Trust. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk At the end of October, the South Suffolk Taskforce, which I Chair, published its ‘Resilient Recovery’ report regarding the local economy’s recovery from the pandemic. The Taskforce was established in 2017 to bring together stakeholders from Babergh DC, Sudbury Town Council, Suffolk CC and the New Anglia LEP to assess the state of our economy. We held meetings across the constituency with numerous organisations from varying industries such as retail, manufacturing, and tourism. We also used the Taskforce as a forum to discuss major strategic challenges such as the factory closures at Delphi in Sudbury and Philips Avent in Glemsford. The most notable example of the successes of the Taskforce was the £62.2m investment from GCB Cocoa to build a chocolate factory on the former Philips Avent site. Securing this investment, and crucially the potential 220 jobs that it facilitated, was the result of the working relationships that the Taskforce established. We reached out to the Department for International Trade to ensure that the site was advertised in British embassies around the world, and ultimately worked across stakeholders to promote the opportunity to the Malaysian company. This is an encouraging indication of the ability of our manufacturing industry to attract foreign investment into our area. During the pandemic our attention turned to bolstering business recovery at the end of lockdown. In our previous meetings we had identified several areas where there was potential for increased economic growth, but the pandemic made this work vital. Some of the opportunities included in the report were Babergh’s exciting Levelling-Up bid to regenerate Sudbury’s centre; the importance of road improvements at the Copdock Interchange to release the true potential of Freeport East; and the possible development of a creative cluster on the Brantham Industrial Site. The report also outlines an innovative suggestion to build a Stour Valley Cultural Group to maximise our rich cultural heritage. This group would work to promote the collective appeal of Constable, Gainsborough, Morris and others to enrich our local retail and visitor economy. Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Maths Through Stories Week In school we have held a Maths Through Stories week, where parents have been invited into school to share a story with their child’s class. The book was read by the Class Teacher to model storytelling and how reading comprehension takes place in classrooms. Then came the part that filled some parents with trepidation, and the children with immense excitement an activity based around a maths concept taken from the story in the book. These included a penguin drive, tangram animals, arrays with penguins to support multiplication and times tables and building 3D models of homes to construct a tower tall enough to reach the sun. The afternoon ended with the parents being offered a well-earned cup of tea and biscuit. I think it is safe to say that school maths was nowhere near a complex as many initially believed when looked at in a fun way. Some parents even asked when the next Maths Through Stories week might be! Well, what a surprise the members got this month, the committee were surprised as well!!! David Wright unfortunately could not demonstrate, but the Committee did not find out until 6.30 pm. A plan was hatched, Lorna went to Morrisons and bought lots of flowers, containers were found and demonstrators were found. The AGM proceeded smoothly, the accounts were presented and approved, committee members reelected and a new member joining the committee – thank you Carol. The demonstration followed with Pauline and Jayne, then Chris and Lorna. As you can see from the picture (could be they are relieved to have finished) some lovely flower arrangements appeared, which were later included in the raffle. Well done everyone on the committee. Sarah later made a lovely tied bunch from the remaining flowers also included in the raffle. Our next meeting is on November 9th at 7.30 in the United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh. David Willett will be talking of his life running a Garden Centre. All will be made welcome.
Whats Better Than An Allotment Allotments don’t just have to be about growing fruit and veg (although that is a big bonus!) They can play a significant role in the fight to preserve our environment. So much wildlife can be found on an allotment, many good allotment sites set aside special areas which are left virtually untouched allowing wildlife to thrive. If you’re happy to share your harvest with nature, having an allotment can contribute to the bio-diversity of an area and also provide vital habitats for wildlife. Not long after HEAT (Hadleigh Environment Action Team) was formed one of our members suggested we take on an allotment. The idea was not to follow the traditional allotment growing format where the sole focus is on producing the biggest and best crop. We wanted to develop a space where we could experiment and try out new ideas; growing produce, composting and rainwater harvesting and allowing wildlife to thrive, all in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. We also wanted to reach out to those in the community who don’t have the good luck to have a garden but were keen to try their hand at growing fruit and veg to come and join us. We are not experts and welcome new ideas. If you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch. Hadleigh Garden Club Autumn has certainly arrived with leaves turning burnished colours. Our October meeting saw a good attendance of both members and visitors. The speaker was Alan Bourne the owner of Perrywood Garden Centre. His family and team have been working on their Sudbury site for the past 3 years and plan to open fully in 2023. He explained how his parents bought their original site at Tiptree in the early 1950’s. This has grown dramatically with sustainability high on the agenda.It is a real family business with several generations bringing their talents into diversifying and improving facilities. Writing this article ahead of publication may mean it is a bit late to carry out some jobs, but weather permitting there is time for a few things. Check the heater is still working in your greenhouse as we are starting to get overnight frost. Rake up fallen leaves from paths and lawns. A rotary mower on a high setting is good to pick them up. The chopped leaves will rot down quicker and ideally make leaf mould. You need some patience as this can take a year to convert into usable material. Store leaves in an old compost bag with holes in then out behind the shed out of the way. Monty Don uses loads of the stuff in bulk..if it’s good enough for him it’s good enough for me. Our next meeting is Mon 8th November at 7.30 pm. in the Guild Room. It promises to be amusing as entitled “How NOT to do an RHS display” Entrance is £2 for members , £4 visitors that includes refreshments. Hadleigh Evening Women's Institute A veritable feast was enjoyed at the October meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI. Contributions from all attending resulted in a delicious spread of both savoury and sweet platters - not a jar of jam in sight! We are looking at playing our part in recycling and will collect all clean dog and cat food pouches, crisp packets and plastic wrapping to take to collection points that are cropping up all over. Planning for next year's programme is well under way with an interesting variety of speakers and subjects already booked. We are also looking at days out, theatre visits. etc. However, in the immediate future Jane Haylock from The Idler in Hadleigh High Street will be coming to our next meeting on Tuesday 16th November relating tales from all those years of keeping a bookshop. Promises to be both informative and amusing with a few surprises. She has asked us to bring a favourite book. If you think you might like to join the WI come along for a 'taster' - you will be most welcome. We meet on the third Monday upstairs in the Seminar Room of the Library at 7.30pm. Hadleigh Art Club Activities We are a group of people who enjoy drawing and painting. We get together on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 pm for a couple of hours in the upstairs room at Hadleigh Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group... We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5, due in May. There is a list of weekly topics but these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current weeks) while others will be working on their own subject. Do you think you might like to join us? Good News for Kersey School On November 1st Kersey Primary school began an exciting new chapter in its 150-year history, by joining a family of small village primary schools across Suffolk, the Tilian Partnership. Kersey is now able to share expertise and resources with the 8 other primaries in the Tilian network, helping to drive up standards and offer a wider range of opportunities for its children. Kersey has chosen to join Tilian - a new, fast-growing, but non-profit making ‘MultiAcademy Trust’ - because they are experts in small village schools, believing that such schools can provide children from all walks of life not only the best possible start in education but also to develop social confidence and friendships. Small classes enable teachers to work closely with pupils, identifying strengths whilst supporting individual needs. Tilian CEO Andrew Berry credits his own village primary school for giving him the best start in life, and says that “Kersey has amazing potential to be one of the best schools in Suffolk offering high quality education and an enriched curriculum within a nurturing family atmosphere.” This work is already underway, with Tilian having already spent the last few months assisting Head Teacher Jess Damant with the curriculum – and now everyone’s looking forward to exciting activities for Christmas, such as visiting a local farm to choose the school Christmas tree and a magical candlelit Christmas service with children playing handbells at the end of term. Kersey School continues to have very close ties to Kersey church and the local community and these are built into the current school curriculum and extra curricular activities. Mrs Damant, who is about to go on maternity leave, says “I am thrilled we have secured a positive future for our wonderful school; it means we can continue to provide the best possible opportunities for our pupils going forward.” Her maternity cover Claire Dunnell Paley, a longstanding Tilian employee, says “I grew up close by and Kersey School has always had a fantastic reputation. Keeping Time As the first concert since the start of the pandemic draws closer I take this opportunity to introduce our Conductor and Musical Director, Christopher Phelps. Chris has been leading the Hadleigh Choral Society since 1991 so is no stranger to the Hadleigh community. “My first concert was Haydn's Creation, performed on 27th April to celebrate the Millenium in Hadleigh”. Chris studied at the Royal College of Music in London, winning many prizes. He was organist and choirmaster at Armagh Cathedral before moving to Vienna to study with Hans Swarowsky at the Akademie für Musik. From there he went on to work and study in Italy and Salzburg, winning international prizes, particularly for conducting. He has worked with many distinguished musicians, including Nigel Kennedy, John Lill CBE and Leon Goossens, and also had the opportunity to work in a masterclass with the late Herbert von Karajan. Herbert von Karajan was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 34 years and is generally regarded as one of the greatest 20th Century conductors. Not only an acclaimed conductor, Chris is a talented transcriber and arranger. His arrangements have been recorded by the City of Prague Philharmonic, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia and more locally the Colchester Symphony Orchestra, where he has held the position of Musical Director since 1983. Joining the rehearsals in recent weeks I have been able to see at first-hand how Chris takes the choir through each practice with great humour. The music stops for a quick anecdote or recollection from his past experiences and career and then, with a tap of the baton, it’s back to work. Chris adds “I am confident that the programme we have put together for this Autumn concert will have great appeal. The works of Vivaldi and Schubert will be in contrast to some shorter ensembles and we also have four great soloists this year. We are grateful to Matthew Douglas Ltd for supporting the choir as sponsor. Putting these concerts together always takes a great deal of effort and, of course, there have been new challenges this time. News from Hadleigh Community Primary School The Ink Bin Eco Project Hadleigh Community Primary School are thrilled to be working on an exciting ecofundraising project with East of England Co-Op and The Ink Bin to recycle ink cartridges through our local Co-Op branch. This week, The Ink Bin has gone into our local Co-Op branch for customers to drop their home-use ink cartridges in for recycling. Certain ink cartridges hold value as they are remanufactured and the school will receive regular funds for this part of the collection. Every cartridge dropped into the Bin will be fully recycled. Please do look out for The Ink Bin within the Co-Op store and let your friends and family know too! If you have any direct questions about the recycling, you can contact The Ink Bin through their website- www.theinkbin.co.uk You can also find lots of Eco Activities and weekly newsletters on their website under the tab ECO KIDS. It’s a wonderful initiative that supports recycling, fundraising and free environmental education so we hope we are able to raise lots of funds for our school through the project. PE On Friday 1st October 2021, we took part in Hadleigh Pyramid Schools Under 9's and Under 11's Cross Country Festival along with Kersey, Hintlesham and Elmsett. Both our Under 9's and Under 11's participants had to run a total distance of 1600m which is just under a mile. There were 4 races in total. All of our runners had an excellent time despite the very very very wet conditions! Our results were as followed: Under 9 Girls - 1st Place, Under 9 Boys - 2nd Place, Under 11 Girls - 2nd Place, Under 11 Boys - 1st Place. Well done to all our runners, an excellent achievement! On Thursday 7th October 2021, we entered a team into the Under 11's Girls Football Festival at Whitton Sports Centre. There were 12 schools in total at the event. Our team played matches against Claydon, The Heath, St. Joseph's College and The Oaks. The girls put on a great team performance all afternoon, showing excellent teamwork. As a result of this, our team won 2 of their matches (2-0 & 2-0) and lost 2 of their matches (0-1 & 0-1). Well done girls, a fantastic effort!

Parish Council The main points discussed during the meeting of 29 September 2021 were: • Casual Vacancy There had been four applications for the casual vacancy; the applications had been reviewed by all councillors and the candidates had been interviewed by the working party. A summary of the questions and responses had been circulated to all councillors. Following a vote by show of hands, Sue Keeble was co-opted. • District Council report Babergh had already helped a small number of Afghan interpreters and their families to resettle Sue Keeble – our newly in Suffolk. The former Angel Court care home in Hadleigh had been converted into 21 new co-opted Parish Councillor homes, a mix of one and two-bedroom flats offering affordable rent and shared ownership options. Babergh and Mid Suffolk DCs had received national recognition at the iESE Public Sector Transformation Awards held in London on 8 September, including an award for the Virtual High Street. Councillor Ward said Hadleigh County Councillor Mick Fraser was leading a proposal for new parking arrangements in Benton Street • County Council report With regard to the ANPR trial, two sites had now been registered for Layham; the trial was due to start at the end of the year. Highways were considering ways in which the pavement between Upper Layham and Hadleigh could be widened; councillors stressed how narrow it had become, making it extremely dangerous for pedestrians and people using mobility scooters. The independent report into Suffolk’s SEND provision had been published and had highlighted several weaknesses, which SCC would work to address. Budget 2022-23 The Chairman explained that the PC would discuss the draft budget for the coming year at its November meeting, following recommendations from the working group. Currently, the Village Hall, Playing Field and the PCC received annual grants from the PC; representatives from the three organisations had been invited to speak to help inform the discussions. • Flooding in Layham Road The Clerk said there was no evidence that Suffolk Highways had carried out remedial work near the Rugby Club by 9 September 2021, as planned. She had requested clarification. • Textile bank The Clerk had requested a larger bin at the Recycling Centre; this was not possible at the moment, but the existing bin would be emptied more frequently. • Parking Councillor Ward had confirmed that car parking charges would be introduced in Hadleigh during 2022; the first hour would be free of charge. In response to a question about the machines currently out of order, he said new machines had been ordered as the existing ones were old and it would not be cost-effective to repair them. • Speeding The SID device had been installed on Upper Street. The Parish Council is now asking for help from Upper Layham residents to support the changeover of the SID, which is moved from the pole near the bus stop to the one outside Windy Ridge every 7 days (Suffolk Highways have told us that the device cannot be at any one location for a prolonged period). Parish Council members have been doing this, but we need some younger volunteers to take over as it involves working off steps and lifting the device above head height. It takes two people to make the changeover safely and takes less than an hour a week. We need enough people to volunteer for this important task so that we can create a rota.If you can give a little time to allow this important project to continue, please give Parish Councillor John Curran a call on 01473 823151. About the SID - This portable device measures the speed of vehicles approaching it and, whilst recording its speed to its memory, displays the speed to the driver. It also displays one of three messages: ‘THANK YOU’, if the speed is below 30mph, ‘SLOW DOWN’ if the speed is above 30mph but below 45mph, ‘TOO FAST’, with a red warning triangle if the speed is above 45mph .

We have made our own bread, talking about flour & wheat. The children also enjoyed making scrambled egg. Lots of mixing & stirring! Thank you for the Music Hadleigh Community Choir are in very fine voice considering we have not sung together for the last couple of years! We are rehearsing hard to put on a concert in Hadleigh URC on Saturday 11th December starting at 2pm. This is a deliberate choice on our part in the hope of encouraging Hadleigh residents and their families, who might not want to go out on a winter’s evening, to come and support us and enjoy an afternoon of music. The choir takes the health and safety of its members, as well as all those in the Hadleigh community, very seriously. To that end, whilst we really want to sing and entertain you all, the concert will depend on the government guidelines and Covid restrictions. Marking 100 years of Remembrance 100 years of remembrance is something that we are extremely proud of at the RBL. The nation has long been united by this annual commemoration, drawing communities together up and down the country as they remember the sacrifices made for us by the Armed Forces from Britain and the Commonwealth. Thankfully, this year we should be able to gather in person to mark the occasion. The RBL was formed in 1921 with the aim of caring for those who had suffered as a result of service during the First World War. By 1921 the tradition of the two minutes silence had been established and the first ever Poppy Appeal was organised to raise much needed funds. The Hadleigh Branch of the RBL was established on 28 September 1921 and organised its first Remembrance Sunday parade that year, marching to the new memorial on the High Street. The RBL is the country’s largest service charity and raises millions each year through the Poppy Appeal. This allows the RBL to co ntinue its vital work which is as important today as it as ever was. Over 150,000 UK service personnel served in Afghanistan and that conflict has left some deep scars, both physical and mental. Just this year we have seen troops from this region directly involved in the Kabul Airlift and closer to home we have also seen our Armed Forces deploy in support of the Covid response, the ambulance service, flood defence and more recently the fuel crisis. Serving our country can come at a cost and we want to be there to offer support whenever it is needed. Our Poppy Appeal begins on 30 Oct 21 and runs through to Remembrance Sunday. We will be manning two collection points in Morrisons and the Co-op over the weekends. The Remembrance Sunday Parade will step off from George Street outside the RBL at 13:55hrs on Sunday 14 Nov 21. There will be a short wreath laying and act of remembrance at the War Memorial which will be followed by a Remembrance church service at St Mary’s Church starting at 15:00hrs.
Remembrance Cemetery Tour A guided tour of the Great War war graves in Hadleigh cemetery will take place on 6 & 7 Nov 21. A local guide will tell the stories of the ten local men buried in the cemetery, including Sgt Walter Rudd (photographed). Anyone wishing to join the tour should meet at the gate house at Friars Road Cemetery at 10:00hrs either day. Donations to the Poppy Appeal will be appreciated.

(formerly Hadleigh Steering Group) The Hadleigh Community Forum meets on the second Tuesday of each month. Meeting dates,our Terms of Reference and minutes are available on request. We share information explore ideas, facilitate new ventures and events such as Visit Hadleigh, Hadleigh on Show and the Year of the Sheep plus the provision of a new market bench. Representatives attend from voluntary social care groups, community organisations, residents, business, and the Town and District Councils. Anyone is welcome but please let us know if you plan to attend. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 9 November 2021 from 4.15pm to 6.pm in the Social Room at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. October Meeting - Chair; Richard Fletcher The Chair welcomed and thanked everybody for coming. Apologises for Absence were given and the previous Minutes were approved subject to a few corrections. There were no matters arising. Terms of Reference and Information for Chair of the Month Following last months resolution to change the name of the group to the Hadleigh Community Forum several minor alterations to the Terms of Reference were agreed to emphasise that the Forum includes the rural areas of Hadleigh as much as the Town. The ‘Information for Chair of the Month’ list remained unaltered. Standard Updates 1. Hadleigh Town Council The Hadleigh Town Council Town Manager Cheryl Tye advised that;- The Welcome Back Fund awarded to the Council from Babergh DC is funding;Advertisements in the EADT between now and Christmas promoting the Hadleigh High Street shopping experience as well as the Christmas Shopping Event, The High Street Christmas Trees, and the Market Place Christmas Tree and the decorative lights to go round the Market Place, and New Planting in the Market Place garden and the garden behind the Co-op. Christmas Trees will be put up in the Town on 12th November 2021 to allow for any issues which may occur and the Christmas Shopping Event and light switch on will take place on 4th December 2021. The Town Council has commenced the tender process to recruit a new grounds maintenance contractor following the withdrawal of services from the previous contractor. Suffolk County Council Highways have agreed that the cycle rack planters can be sponsored to pay for new plants which Hadleigh in Bloom have kindly agreed to organise. Everyone is asked to check the street grit bins close to you during winter and let the Town Council Administrative officer know when they need filling up. Finally the Town Council still has funds to provide financial assistance for Hadleigh community organisations with projects to support the Hadleigh Community. Visitor information Centre The Visitor Information Centre closed on 30 September and had received nearly 1200 visitors, residents and locals through the door during the summer. 3. Hadleigh in Bloom While the Hanging Baskets are all gone the tall planters with the Bicycle stands will continue to look good for a little longer 5. The Community Gardens Still some cutting back remains to be completed, but most activity will now wait until the spring. When the leaves fall we will need to tidy up. No one in attendance but picks have continued throughout 2020 and 2021 by individuals and family groups. Concern was expressed about the state of the River and the Chair agreed to contact the Environmental Agency. 7. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group The results of the 2021 Patient Survey is available on line (Health Centre’s own website). Hard copies can be collected from Reception at the practice.
Large ‘flu jab sessions took place on 25 September and 9 October resulting in most patients 65 plus upwards received their ‘flu jab. Covid boosters will start on 30 October in St Mary’s Church. The practice will contact patients and invite them to come for their booster jab. There is no need to call the Practice to find out when it will be your turn as this only clogs up the telephone. The Practice wishes to encourage patients, who can, to make use of the online booking facility. This will free up phone space for patients who do not use IT. You just need to make a single visit to Reception to pick up your User ID and further instructions. Same day appointments cannot however be booked this way. Two of Dr Cullen’s photos in the Surgery Art Display have been sold with a proportion of the money going to the Practice’s Charitable Trust. 8. St Mary’s Parish Church The present remedial work is progressing well on conservation to the tower and clerestory windows. Lead repairs are also being carried out on the spire and main roof. Ancillary works are also on going to clean and re-point parapet capping stones. A length of lime tree, that stood in the church yard, trunk has been retained and the intention is to have it carved into a statue which will stand in the niche over the west door. The figure for the statue is still to be decided. A ring from the lower trunk will also be kept, cleaned and the growth rings linked to events that occurred in Hadleigh over its lifetime. 9. A.O.B. Sarah Thompson reported that the new Hadleigh Tea Towel (available at Partridges) was a best seller helping to raise funds for the Christmas Present Trust. Bridge Street Allotment & Leisure Gardener’s Association The pumpkins have been harvested, the last carrots dug up, potatoes stored, and chutneys and jams are lined up on the shelf. Apart from their winter crops, plot holders are clearing the land and putting their plots to bed for the winter. This is a time to order next year’s seeds and think about replenishing the goodness in the soil and enriching it with organic matter. Organic matter is essential for healthy soil as it provides nutrients, structure and holds moisture in the soil. It also reduces the need to add artificial fertilisers. Organic matter accumulates naturally but is lost when soil is cultivated through digging, raking and tilling and because the vegetables we grow remove goodness and provide less organic residue. Today cultivated soils in England have as little as 2% organic matter left. This makes it harder to grow healthy vegetables and the soil becomes hard and cracked in dry weather or turns to slippery, compacted mud when its wet. You can see this happening in the fields around Hadleigh. Home made compost is the ideal as it’s cheap, reduces waste and is good for soil. Plot holders can find it hard to produce enough garden compost and so buy in manure from local farms and stables. Ideally manure should be well rotted and fresh manure composted before use. Some of us dig it into the soil but you don’t need to, and there is an ecological argument for not digging as it destroys beneficial organisms and disturbs the balance and structure of soil. Increasingly gardeners leave manure and compost on the surface for nature to do its work and take the nutrients into the soil. It can be better to wait and put on compost and manure in late winter or early spring to avoid the winter rains from washing the nutrients away. The aim is to have 5% organic matter which is why there are heaps of manure and compost on the allotments at the moment. Allotment holders can’t get enough of the brown stuff!

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 At last people! Lots of them, painting, weeding, chatting and laughing. It was good to welcome a big work party from Axa Insurance last month. They tackled many jobs that have fallen by the wayside since Covid 19 and posed for a photo when finished. We send them a big thank you and hope they were as glad to see us as we were to see them. Thanks are also due to Elaine and Sheila who raised £252 by taking part in the Hadleigh Yard Sale. It was a particularly cold day when the humans came in for steaming hot cuppas and biscuits. My canine pals and I studied every crumb being quietly consumed until someone broke the silence with “Why don’t dogs blink?” Haha, fooled you! We do blink, but the long soulful stare guilt trips most people into sharing a tasty treat. Apparently our meaningful looks stem from the way our ancestors, the wolves, communicated with each other. SESAW volunteers are attending two festive events in November. Jeanette is back with her Terrific Tombola, 10-4pm on Saturday 13th at Bridge Farm Barns, Monks Eleigh, IP7 7AY. Sheila will have another classy selection of gifts at the Long Melford Christmas Community Market, 10-1pm on Thursday 25th at the Old School, CO10 9DX. Both ladies take great care with presentation and value for money so please call in if you are able. Dear Sir On 14th September 2020 sent my Tax Return to the Inland Revenue with details of my Income in the Fiscal Year 2020/2021.. Around a week later I received the Tax Assessment dated 18th September 2022 with a calculation of the Income I owed for year ended 5th April 2021; I could have delayed payment of the sum due until January 2022 but I have sent the Revenue the sum owed with a letter thanking them for their speed and efficiency.in handling my Return. In mid September also I applied for a new driving licence and that arrived promptly for the period 1st October 2021 for three years to 2024 Such efficiency is to be commended. and contrary to the situation regarding our lack of a satisfactory banking system in Hadleigh. However thanks are due to the Trustees and volunteers who work for the various charitable organization in our town including the Ansell Centre Charity with particular reference to the Memories Cafe and Lunch Clubs and the Cinema John Cunningham
Dear Sir As Remembrance Sunday approaches in November, I thought I would share - with permission - a memorial that one of my neighbours in Hadleigh made to a Merchant Navy seafarer lost in action. The memorial is to the householder's late father Geoffrey Phillip Garrod, a radio officer who went down during the Second World War in his vessel the MV Frederick S. Fales. The ship was torpedoed and sunk in HX 72, the first convoy to die after leaving Halifax, Nova Scotia. The date was 21/22 September 1940. It is very pleasant to witness in this present day that someone is remembered. Brian Lazenby
Dear Sir Dear readers, I just wanted to thank everybody who supported me in my one million step challenge for Diabetes UK. I raised £276 and did a total of 1,015,516 steps over the three months. Thank you so much for all the support from family and friends to help me achieve this goal. During my challenge on the 20th September I unfortunately lost my dad Tim Clarke. Thanks for everybody’s kind messages and support at this time, my family and myself appreciated it so much. During all of this on the 26th September we had the Hadleigh Yard Sale which was very popular. Thanks to Hadleigh Town Council for supporting the event this year and to everybody to took part and attended the event. I must apologise for a few mistakes I made but hope you could understand the frustrating time I was going through at the time. Things are getting back to normal at the Ansell Centre - Lunch Clubs, Memories Cafe and Digital Cinema We were delighted to welcome lots of our members back to the Lunch Clubs in September and October for a proper lunch. During the summer we had been serving morning coffee or afternoon tea, but for the first time since March 2020 we felt able to serve our usual two course lunch. The Memories Cafe, which takes place every Thursday, is going from strength to strength. Members enjoy chatting over coffee or maybe a quiz in the morning and a fun activity in the afternoon after lunch. Do pop in any time between 11 am and 2.30 pm for a cuppa and a chat. The Digital Cinema welcomed over 60 guests to the showing of “The Last Bus” on 15th October. Our November film is “Misbehaviour” on Friday 19th. See elsewhere in this publication for details. Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Cabinet Member for Environment and Hadleigh North Ward The Conservative Leader has recently had a ‘shake-up of the District Council and I have been appointed as Cabinet Member for Environment, which encompasses waste, licensing, public realm and countryside elements. Hadleigh Car Parking Tariff In the first instance I am addressing the Controversial plans to reduce free car parking to just one hour across south Suffolk, which were due to be implemented in January 2022. I have been vocal against the reduced free parking, which should be postponed. I will now lead on this controversial issue in my cabinet role which has already been front page news and gained momentum from speaking with the public and on radio. I believe very firmly that as we will not have a deficit in the budget as previously forecast, whilst my predecessor was unwilling to reconsider the parking tariff implementation, the Conservatives recognise after COVID restrictions, we must support our businesses and encourage residents back to our High Streets in Hadleigh & Sudbury to help these towns to thrive. My role is to make sure these tariffs will not be introduced in January and consider alternative means to finance this. At this stage, as 6 months have passed since the decision was made, the Cabinet can revisit its decision to reverse or amend it. A new decision would be required by Cabinet if the intention is to not implement parking charges at all or if the charging schedule is being altered – for example increasing or decreasing the ‘free’ parking hours at the start of the stay. If the intention is to further push back the implementation of the parking charges, no additional decision is required by Cabinet as the delegation is in place for me to implement the original decision. Therefore, following lengthy discussions with the Leader John Ward who has listened attentively to formal strategic advice and the public. My decision and advice is the Conservatives should not implement any charging and ‘The Jewel in the Crown’ will remain as is and remain the envy of other Councils throughout the country. Hadleigh CCTV The new state-of-the-art CCTV system is now fully operational – helping Hadleigh to remain safe and make the High Street a safer place for residents during the evening. The new state-of-the-art system comprises of eight cameras in Hadleigh, which will be monitored 24/7 by neighbouring authority West Suffolk Council in their existing purpose-built CCTV control room, which I have been invited to get a clear idea about how this works and the clarity of identify problem hot spots in the High Street and support the local economic recovery. Although the council does not have a statutory obligation to provide CCTV, it is hoped that the new system will help to prevent and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, aid prosecution of those who are engaged in criminal activity and help the police with finding missing people. It will also support the council’s continued commitment to tackling enviro-crime, including littering and fly-tipping. The new up-to-date system also means that any defects to CCTV equipment can be repaired promptly, thereby minimising any downtime for the cameras. Senior Pay Increase An independent review recommended that Babergh and Mid Suffolk district councils increase Senior Leadership Team pay to attract the best candidates for vacant roles and to keep salaries competitive with others in the region. A report detailing the recommendations has been published on the councils’ website today and came to Full Council. I was firmly against this recommendation as on close scruitinee, a comparison had been made with other split councils in the country, rather than neighbouring councils, where Babergh’s salaries appeared to be in line. At Full Council the Conservatives objected firmly to this. As with other industries, this was not the time to be considering pay rises for Senior Leadership Teams within Babergh, we have all been through difficult times. Rotary Review Club News: Meetings are now back to normal with 2 lunch meetings and a coffee morning each month either indoors or outdoors depending on weather. However the venue for Lunch has changed to the Eight Bells as a separate ground floor room is available to enable the Club to hold all meetings in private with the opportunity to invite speakers again. Some members will remember that this was the Clubs home during the early part of this century. Members would like to thank Andy and his team at The George for accommodating and looking after the Club so well for the past few years with the lack of a suitable downstairs room which is a necessity for some members these days was the only reason for the change. Christmas Plans: It is hoped that it will be possible to resume the traditional collections this year with Santa and his float touring Hadleigh during the week leading up to Christmas. Permission has already been obtained to visit the usual routes and to appear at Morrisons. The Club relies very much on outside help and hopes that those who have helped in the past will again offer their services whilst new helpers will be most welcome. Past helpers will soon be contacted but if anyone else feels that they would like to be involved in this very popular activity please contact the Club as shown below. The parish perambulation, or more popularly known as Beating the Bounds, has ancient origins from pre-conquest times. The tradition is also linked to Rogation Week, meaning to ask, or to pray, and has further links to Ascension Day. The parish perambulation developed into two main purposes: one, was to reaffirm the boundaries, or bounds of a parish by walking the boundary and by marking features like trees, gateposts, buildings or with stones to define the boundary. Sometimes a map was also drawn, and a description written up of the features and the types of markings made. The second, and equally important purpose was to teach the young where the boundary of their parish was, and in time, for them to be able to teach the younger boys of the parish, thus perpetuating the process of reaffirming the bounds. Here in Hadleigh, we are fortunate to have a map of the parish drawn for the 1758 perambulation, and what must be the earliest map of the whole parish of Hadleigh. Additionally, there is also a written record of the perambulation included in a manuscript began by the Rector, Dr. David Wilkins. The perambulation began with prayers said at St. Mary’s Church, then a small party headed westward to the parish boundary, to reaffirm and recheck markings made on a previous perambulation. The route taken was clockwise, and it took two days to complete the task. A curious feature on the map is the bounds, marked by the orange line, which came down Aldham Mill Hill to the watermill, then returned to the outer boundary by way of the other side of the road! This infers that the parishioners of Aldham had the right to have access to the watermill while still within their own parish, and hence why the watermill is termed as Aldham Mill to this day. Aldham residents do not now enjoy their parish boundary intruding into Hadleigh parish and to Aldham Mill. The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council, The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh. IP75DN. A team of experienced volunteers look after the Hadleigh Archive and meet on a regular basis to catalogue and transcribe its large number of documents and images. Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Benton Street Traffic Management Safety Scheme – On 25th October, Suffolk County Council’s Highways had scheduled the installation for long awaited traffic management safety scheme on Benton Street. Shortly after I was first elected as your county councillor, I was approached by many Benton Street residents who told me of the almost daily hazards they faced from traffic whilst they walked along the pavements. Many had been struck by mirrors or experienced near-misses that would have caused them significant harm. I received many other communications from other footway users of both Hadleigh and elsewhere, who also said much of the same.

In order to obtain empirical evidence, I commissioned a data capture survey which showed that that in some places over 100 vehicle incursions onto the footways every day. Because of these communications and the evidence provided me, I requested that Suffolk Highways do something to improve this hazardous situation. For so many years now there has been much discussion of what should be done to improve traffic flow on Benton Street, but with no action. Now, we are going to try something out, to see if it works, and I have agreed to fund this from Hadleigh’s Local Highways Budget. The purpose of this design is to improve forward vision for motorists, giving more time to anticipate and avoid head-on conflicts with other vehicles with the intent of fewer incursions onto the footways. This installation will be monitored over a 12-18-month period and its success at improving safety assessed. It can be adjusted and modified as necessary whilst being monitored to see whether any improvements are required. I am glad that SCC listened to residents’ concerns over increased speeds and will install a calming traffic island build-out to alleviate this hazard. Castle Road – This road was in the poorest condition of all U-class roads in Hadleigh and had been planned for resurfacing during 2024/25. This road was continuously crumbling away, causing scores of potholes within a 120m distance every year and had ended up as a mosaic of numerous patch repairs. However, we have now managed to have these works done, 3-years ahead of schedule. It this is another fine example of how perseverance and pestering the council with an issue, can lead to achieving the desired outcome in the end! SCC fails SEND Children – SCC last month apologised for letting down families of SEND pupils, after an independent review by Lincolnshire County Council exposed failings in communication and education health and care plans (EHCP) among other service areas. This review was commissioned by Suffolk after a significant increase in correspondents from concerned parents and carers earlier this year. SCC recognizes that they have let down some children and young people as certain aspects of their services have simply not been good enough.

They have now started to make improvements to the way they do things whilst wide-scale improvement will take time. SCC has already made significant longer-term improvements within SEND and have agreed a £45.1m capital programme to create an additional 870 specialist education places over a 5-year period to 2024. They have also improved the time in which it takes us to issue Education Health and Care Plans from 18% in 2016 to 95% in 2021. £1million has also been invested into speech and language therapies by Ipswich & East Suffolk and West Suffolk CCGs. At the moment, more than 6,000 children in Suffolk currently have a health and care plan to identify what support they need to help with their special educational needs. The number has nearly doubled from 3,000 in 2014. A further 12,000 pupils have special educational needs and do not require a health and care plan. Currently, there are 2,000 places at either special schools or specialist units for those with more complex needs. COVID-19 - Managing COVID-19 outbreaks is putting considerable pressure on our schools and breaking the chain of transmission within our education settings is becoming increasingly challenging. The case numbers in Suffolk schools at the start of October had resulted in 1/3rd of pupils in some secondary schools missing education through infection. The infection rate in Suffolk rose above the national average and is one of the highest in the East of England. Most new cases in Suffolk during the beginning of October were in the 0 – 19-year age group. Case rates in the 10 – 14-year age group were of particular concern, with a rate that put Suffolk in the top 20% of upper tier local authorities nationally. Therefore, the decision was made to implement an additional control measure for education settings when managing a COVID-19 outbreak, which was implemented from 6th October 2021. Suffolk secures £150,000 for new trees Broom Hill in Hadleigh is among woodland benefitting from £150k funding secured from the Forestry Commission. The Local Authority Treescapes Fund targets treescapes that have been neglected or affected by tree diseases such as ash dieback. This joint bid by a number of Suffolk’s authorities including SCC and Babergh will fund the planting of around 3,000 trees this coming planting season across the county. Last year, the county council committed £228k to planting trees and hedgerows, with 100,000 planted already and the same amount to be planted this coming season. Remember we had a Fun Dog Show back in September? I’ve just caught up with the winners of the ‘Craft Competition’ that was part of the day’s fun. Here’s a picture of the two winners, Mia and Lily, receiving their rosettes from Squidgy last month. Congratulations you two! Since then the fund raising team has organised another Shelley Walk. Their famous Quiz Night had to be cancelled due to low take up of tickets so I guess you humans are still being cautious about indoor gatherings. Quite right, we shall just have to keep to outdoor fun and games, won’t we? The wonderful supporters who do come to events keep us horses going. We couldn’t work without you. The wintery weather has spoilt some rides for our people but I’ve been working flat out. Wet weather means riders come and limber up on me, indoors, before being put through their paces with a team of volunteers learning about horse care, stable management, and tack. It’s like learning a new language, all the peculiarities of horse-speak without the grammar ha ha. I’m told that all our rides are full and we have a waiting list. We are feeling slightly short of instructors, so if any Pony Club parents are reading this, might you be able to spare a half day each week during term time to help out teaching people to ride? The exciting prospect of doing something with the skills you already have, being welcomed into the RDA family, and eventually being certified as a COACH for us must surely whet your appetite? Lockdown Legacy The legacy of the lockdown lives on. This time it is in the form of hand knitted blankets. Guided by Hilary Crisp, several residents of Sydney Brown Court beavered away for months to create an enormous stock of colourful, different sized blankets. Hilary had seen an earlier article in the HCN about the delivery of blankets to the charity Project Linus. One call later and her magnificent collection joined the work of other busy knitters in Hadleigh. Their combined efforts amounted to over 60 blankets so Jan Devey decided it was time to visit the local Project Linus representative, Victoria Cox. Victoria was delighted with her latest acquisitions especially as they were so colourful and carefully crafted. It seems there is a never ending demand for these warm wraps so the Hadleigh knitters will keep up their good work even though lockdown is over. Many find it a relaxing, therapeutic pastime which combines well with watching T.V. and is often more exciting. New home knitters are always welcome. French’s Care Haven Hello to all our readers, firstly let’s get straight to our Quiz Night, to put in your diaries for Saturday 20th November at the Ansell centre in Hadleigh, where you can expect a good evening out at our Quiz Night. We have a fish and chip/vegan option on the food front and a fun evening is planned, with a bar, raffle and homemade cakes on the night, tables of 6-8 people, arrival at 7pm, with start time 7.30pm. If you would like to come but do not have 6-8 people for a table, then do not worry, we will put you on a table with some lovely other quizzers, so that you have an enjoyable evening with us. You will need to book your table and food in advance, because we have to pre order your food 10 days before the quiz, so the company cooking for us can order the correct amount of food for the night. Booking contact details below. I would like to thank everyone who came along to our Open day. We had some really nice comments from the visitors, saying they had enjoyed the day and what super condition the animals all looked in. My commitment, love and passion for animals, goes along with giving them quality food and a good daily routine, as part of their care and management, this is the recipe for healthy, happy animals. I think the helpers would prefer it if I wasn’t so OCD about the cleanliness 7 days a week, with their shelters being spotless, water and feed buckets sparkling clean, haynets full and hanging properly, paddocks cleared of poo and that is before we even start on the animals grooming and TLC. I was told by Charmaine, who did a great job helping at the entrance gate, on the open day, that there were lots of happy smiling faces walking back to their cars. A big thank you to our volunteers, John, Sharon, Colin, Emma, Chloe, Wendy, Lissy, Lewis, Summer, Pamela, Graham and to Emilie, one of our team who was in France, but left us with some plants to sell. You all made the day go smoothly, lots of hugs to you all. Pictures are of Dr John Flather, our chef for the day and Frankie, who was curious to see so many people. Thank you to the 2 ladies who made a donation and for the lady who has become a monthly sponsor. We cry out for monthly sponsors, so again big hugs to those who come forward to help keep our Charity going. Lots of thank you’s this month, this one goes to Stoke By Nayland Golf Club, ladies section. Janet the Ladies Captain raised £245 for us. Every penny that is kindly raised for us does not take long to go back out, when Janet and Pamela came along to present the cheque, we had the farrier there trimming the donkeys and some of the horses, his fee was £240 on the day, so for me the ladies donation was gratefully received. As well as the quiz night, the next thing on our agenda is to find help from someone or a company, who knows how to level ground and make the decking type base we need for our wooden garden summer house. Do you know anyone? or can you help? I have dreamed of having this summer house for the last 2 years, so that our helpers of all ages can have their lunch a drink and socialize while they are at French’s. It will make such a difference to so many who come to us, but firstly we need a wooden base, then when the summer house arrives we will need help putting it up, by someone or a company who know what they are doing. Companies that have given their time to help us in the past, have been happy with the advertising we have given them in return, which has helped the company gain new clients.
