The Visit Hadleigh website has received over 28,000 views since going live! Upon moving to Hadleigh four years ago to set up The Gables Bed & Breakfast, I was surprised that Hadleigh did not have a website to promote tourism and our beautiful town. Shortly after this, I read with interest a letter in the Hadleigh Community News from Jane Snowdon mentioning that the Hadleigh Steering Group were looking for volunteers to help build a website, so I headed off to the next month’s meeting and the seed was well and truly sown. In my previous career I had nearly twenty year’s experience working in advertising and marketing, and was born and brought up in Suffolk so had a good grounding! But, being busy setting up my business whilst still working fulltime, it was Jane Snowdon who was the real driving force to getting the site live. When we came across obstacles, she was the one who ploughed on determinedly! Initially we had no funding and were doing things completely voluntarily, but with the help of our web designer, slowly manged to put together a website. No mean feat as we were starting from scratch!

We now have nearly thirty businesses and the Town Council sponsoring the site and it has gone from strength to strength. Jane and I meet once a month with our web manager, Mark, to review the site. Changes are made daily to reflect what’s happening in Hadleigh and our events calendar is a great way to see what’s going on in our thriving town. There is no charge to list your business or event on the website, and we actively welcome the input from those looking to promote an event. But without our sponsors the website would not be able to continue. Tourism is an important part of our strategy to keep Hadleigh alive and prosperous, and the recent Wool Towns initiative has seen Clare, Sudbury, Long Melford, Lavenham and Hadleigh collaborate to further promote tourism via the www.woolstowns.co.uk website.

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh Summer is almost a memory and we are gettting ready for another winter but nothing happens and summer continues, this is what happened in the winter just past. However, Surviving Hadleigh in Winter is preparing anyway and we hope to be in the Town Market again on Friday's, should you have a problem please come and have a word. If you are in receipt of Winter Fuel Allowance but don't really need it perhaps you would like to donate it or part of it to a charity which looks after people who do need it. Surviving Winter in Hadleigh has been operating for two years now and has already helped dozens of people who were having difficulty affording fuel or generally keeping warm. We have distributed coal, blankets, clothing, heaters to people, who, through no fault of their own found it difficult or expensive to keep warm throughout winter. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex England cricket legend and Strictly Come Dancing winner Mark Ramprakash was the star attraction at Hadleigh Cricket Club’s end of season dinner on October 14th. Under a marquee at the club’s Friars Road ground, 250 guests were entertained by Mark’s tales from a glittering career at the crease and from his time on the dancefloor. This was followed by a Q and A during which ‘Ramps’ was asked the inevitable question about Ben Stokes – a tricky one for a man employed as England’s batting coach – and slightly less controversial ones such as ‘what was your favourite Strictly dance’. Of course, it was the ChaCha-Cha! It was a hugely successful evening, with considerable funds raised for the club which will go towards completing the pavilion refurbishment works. The club thanks Jamie Lee Smith Catering for providing fantastic food and service, the bar and waiting staff, as well as to Simon Gladwell for his hard work in coordinating the event for the club, Peter Tampion for providing the disco and electrics and to the club’s fundraising committee for all their contributions to a memorable night. The club’s AGM will be held on Thursday November 23rd and Cheese & Wine party on the following Saturday, November 25th, both at the pavilion. Gary Wiles

Mrs Pretty Our speaker, Julia Barratt, arrived in costume and with two further outfits in tow this really set the scene for her talk “Mrs Pretty – A Business Woman’s Role in WW1” Although Mabel Pretty (born 1872) possessed considerable wealth and influence within society she used both to improve the lot of the less fortunate. Her involvement in the Pretty family corset business enabled her to put her innovative business ideas into practice. These included an in house crèche for employees’ children and staff training. Mabel used her wealth and extensive connections to great effect during WW1. Thanks to the organisational skills and financial resources of her and her like- minded friends, Suffolk played a key role in supplying and caring for the returning wounded soldiers and officers. In spite of Julia’s assurances, members were not convinced that Pretty’s corsets were comfortable. An interesting, most enjoyable evening which had clearly been very well researched.

Wattisham Museum Members spent an interesting afternoon at this amazing Museum in the heart of the WW11 airbase. There are two areas to visit; one with a staggering collection of WW11 memorabilia and artefacts all packed into the original chapel, the second is an enormous hangar with an impressive array of restored fighter planes and armaments. Well worth a visit if only to support the dedicated volunteers who have painstakingly put the collection together before the items are lost forever. Re-opens again next spring. www.wattishamstationheritage.org/index.html Gentle Ramblers The Ramblers had a pleasant walk round Arger Fens followed by a welcome break at Assington Barns. Lunch Bunchers occupied a large table at the community owned pub, The Brook Inn, at Washbrook. Everyone enjoyed their choices for a freshly prepared two course meal followed by coffee and mints. Conversation ranged from Brexit, or the lack of it, Victoria and the changing approach to the facts of life to name just a few of the topics up for analysis.

There are currently a number of spaces available at Layham Playgroup CIO based at Layham Village Hall. They are holding an open day to invite parents and children to visit. Layham Playgroup shouldn’t be overlooked as a wonderful option for young children and an alternative to larger mainstream school nurseries. It is a special place to learn and play that offers something unique and different in a rural setting. Playgroup’ began in 1975 with a group of mum’s from the village who wanted a creative, safe, friendly place for the children to go. This is still the aim today, but it has also moved with the times. The expertise at Layham Playgroup lies in developing the seeds of independence in young children who are away from their primary career for the first time. Simple choice is a BIG idea at this early age and this is handled with special skill at Layham - choosing activities, choosing stories, choosing friends. The fact they are small and have a high staff to child ratio, makes them special. It means they have lots of time to give to each child and bring them on ready for school. Strong simple values are promoted; sharing with other children, caring for each other and toys, accepting others difference. Children receive their formal Learning Journals when they start and staff follow a forward thinking Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS) with weekly themes, i.e., ‘water’, ‘ harvest’ etc. The emphasis at Layham Playgroup, however, continues to be on nature and play! Den building and role-play, country walks in wellies, bug hunting in the garden, puzzles and board games! Integrating the two strategies of play and structured learning is the work of skilled manager, Michelle Elmer who has been successfully running it for the past 10 years. Every morning they set up the activities and new things for the children to explore. Healthy cooking features regularly too as they have great facilities at the village hall this – the children learn lots - measuring, pouring, tasting – yum! They have circle time with music and sharing news. At the end of day they provide a photo slideshow so parents can see what the children have been doing and helps them connect with their day. When ‘Playgroup’ started 42 years ago, a supportive mum’s coffee morning developed and uniquely, Layham Playgroup have retained this special element! Open to anyone, they run Ladybirds Toddler Group every Wednesday (9.30am - 11am) for babies and children aged 0-5. They have storytelling and songs, pictures and play dough, treasure baskets and tea for the grown ups. It’s a relaxed, friendly group - allowing children to become familiar with setting alongside their parents, which facilitates a smoother transition into the main Playgroup when the children are ready to begin. It’s a lovely gentle start (but not compulsory), especially for children who can feel overwhelmed by big busy nurseries. Many working parents need all day sessions, so Layham Playgroup now offers full days on Monday and Thursday (9.15am - 3.30pm), then half days on Tuesdays and Fridays (9.15 - 12.30pm). They also run day trips which parents are invited to join them on – past trips include the zoo, farm and the theatre. Don’t forget the little places – they might be just what you have been looking for ! Open Day - Thursday 9th November 2017 – drop in from 9.30am Layham Village Hall, Church Lane, Lower Layham, IP7 5LZ Tel 07999 866419 More info and online prospectus: http://www.layhamplaygroup.co.uk

Hadleigh Town Council Meeting Thursday 19th October, 2017 Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) Introduction The summer months are traditionally a quiet period for Council business and in most respects that has been the case in 2017. However, the move from Babergh to Endeavour House, Ipswich has generated significant activity. Unfortuntately I have to advise the following news, which has been released and I am sure Cllr Christina Campbell will update residents and Town Council as one of the members who voted on the decision. Merger of Babergh & Mid Suffolk The following decision have been taken by the Cabinet and will come into effect on 23 October, 2017 unless the call in procedure is activated. To provisionally endorse the approach of formally dissolving the two District Councils and create a new larger District Council. To utilise Transformation Fund to jointly conduct stakeholder, public and staff engagement during Autumn 2017.This has been brought to ensure that the two Districts were in the best possible position to respond to and take advantage of the emerging opportunities and challenges within Local Government and Suffolk according to the CEO Arthur Charvonia. However, from a personal perspective I am very aware that 6 years ago Babergh voters elected not to merge in a referendum by 60% to 40%. Even if another referendum is not required this cannot be ignored in any future discussion of the option. I am disappointed as I do not support this decision and believe it should have been put forward to the Full Council, which would have declined it, hence the reason the CEO Mr Charvonia and Leader put it to the Cabinet. Public Access The move of Babergh/Mid Suffolk Council staff is now completed and anyone wishing to visit Council Officers will have to go to Sudbury or Stowmarket unless a special meeting is arranged. The new arrangement will be significantly beneficial for the Babergh/MS Officers but it’s clearly a reduction in service for those who don’t have cars, and those who are not computer literate/owners of smart phones etc . It’s important to get the message around that a single phone number has been introduced to make it easier to contact an individual of department in the new building. It is: 0300 123 4000. Boundary Commission The Boundary Commission has 3 inputs for a restructuring of Babergh to come down from 43 to 31 District Councillors (in 2019). They can be inspected on the Babergh website and eventually on the Boundary Commission’s website too. One input is from the Conservative Group for 30 DCs; one is from the opposition Group for 32 Councillors, and the third is one that Councillor Ferguson and I developed for 31 Councillors. This number (31) was the proposed number from the Boundary Commission. We will be given the Boundary Commission’s proposal on 14th October when the next consultation period will start. I was e uncomfortable with the proposals for some of the Wards, hence our decision to submit an alternative solution to the Conservative Group option. I should stress, however, that they all carry equal weight and the Commission will decide its own Ward structure based largely on about 2500 voters per Ward. However, it should be noted Hadleigh will be reduced from 4 to 3 Councillors. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson e: sian.dawson@babergh.gov.uk T: 07931 703157

Work on the £45,000 refurbishment of the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh is now almost complete with the remaining task to repair and overhaul the main hall flooring. Work, which has been considerably assisted by generous grants received from Viridor Credits, The National Lottery, Babergh & Mid-Suffolk District Council, The Greener Suffolk Fund, The RussellQuinton Land Charity and East of England Co-Op and the United Reformed Church Synod, commenced during the school summer holidays “when the site was slightly less busy” and work on the final part of the jigsaw will be undertaken during the October half term. Jan Dicks, who acts as booking secretary for the site and is also a Trustee of The Ansell Centre Charity, acknowledges the inconvenience caused during the building work but really hopes that all our tenants and ‘occasional’ users will be delighted with the end result. “At times, it’s been a bit of a nightmare trying to find alternate accommodation for our ‘customers’ but I don’t think we’ve let anyone down and we thank them all for their understanding and patience” Jan continues “When we started the refurbishment project we didn’t think we’d be able to afford work on the flooring so that’s a massive bonus. We’ve had an enormous amount of help from so many sources and this has always been a joint venture between the Church and the Ansell Centre Charity ”. The hall has been fitted with a new boiler, additional heating systems, curtaining, lighting system and insulated suspended ceiling and has been redecorated throughout. The Rev Bryn Rickard, Minister of the local United Reformed Church added “It’s a dream how everything has come together. Luckily I was away when most of the work was being completed and the change on my return was a revelation. We were very fortunate with our choice of local contractors and they have all completed a magnificent job” Bryn continues “As well as being able to find such generous sponsors to get this work completed we are fortunate to have, within our church team, a very enthusiastic and capable group of volunteers who manage our campus buildings and we must also thank them, and the team from The Ansell Centre Charity for the time they have all given to assist in the completion of this project. This is a building for our local community and we’re very proud of it and delighted how it is appreciated by the local people”. The refurbished hall will be officially opened and blessed by Bryn at a thanksgiving service on Sunday 26th November at 10.30am when it is hoped that many of our sponsors and representatives from our regular user groups will be able to attend alongside our own congregation at a service of dedication. For possible future bookings of the hall please make contact with Jan on 01473 823413

Eye care appeal at D J Dunstone During the month of August 2017 patients were invited to call into D J Dunstone Optometry in Queen Street make a small donation to Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) and, in so doing, were entered into a draw. In just 4 weeks a total of ÂŁ84.40 was collected which has been sent to VAO for the eye care for Ethiopia campaign. Thank you to all of you who donated to this most worthy cause. We are pleased to announce that the prize draw (of a ÂŁ75 voucher to spend on goods or services in the Practice) was won by Mrs Sue Mackie of Elmsett. This is rather fitting as she set up Elmsett School's recycling Centre over 20 years ago to raise funds for the school Wendy Thomas and Kate Rhodes and as a teaching aid for various drawing the winning ticket Eco related topics. This involves collecting unwanted spectacles for VAO and continues to be very well supported by the pupils and local community.

Helen Swift Curtains & Blinds I started making curtains for my own home as a hobby and gaining skills through courses, which led to getting some experience working part time for an interior design workshop. Before I knew it I was busy with my own client work making curtains and roman blinds for cottages to country houses, holiday lets to B&B’s and even a horse box. I now have 13 years experience under my belt. Working from home I create bespoke soft furnishings from cushions and lampshades to pelmets and bedspreads. I can advise on all aspects of soft furnishings, from fabrics, trimmings and tiebacks to tracks, curtain poles and finials. Call me to arrange an appointment for me to measure and discuss your soft furnishing needs. I have sample books for both fabrics and trimmings, which I can either bring along or can be browsed by appointment at my workshop, or I can order in additional samples for you. Hadleigh Community Primary School HCPS Open Week From week commencing Monday 6th November at 10am each morning, our Headteacher Mr Pilkington will be conducting tours of our school for prospective parents. This is mainly aimed at parents whose child’s date of birth falls between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 as applications for starting full time school need to be submitted by mid-January 2018. If this is you and you would like to join Mr Pilkington, please register your interest at the school office by phoning 01473 822161 or email office@hadcps.uk. We look forward to meeting you. Music The children have made an excellent start in their weekly class music lessons and are learning to focus on the interrelated dimensions of music with singing, instrumental work, improvisation and composition. Extra music tuition is again very popular with three large recorder groups, violins, flutes, clarinets, performance club and a strong choir of over 100 children from Years 4 to 6. Choir have just had their first performance during October by singing in our Harvest Assembly Library Display The first full week back saw every class in the school embarking on a book study. The children were fully immersed in the texts and produced some wonderful stories, reviews, art work and design technology projects. A small snap shot of work is currently on display at Hadleigh Library. Sport On Tuesday 10th October 2017, Hadleigh CPS entered a team in the Under 11's Football Festival at Inspire Suffolk. Twenty-three other schools took part and HCPS won all four of their games. They went on to win their semifinal match putting them through to the final against Woodbridge where once again, the boys did not disappoint with another fantastic display and won 2-0! A special mention would like to go to the defence of the team as they only conceded 1 goal throughout the whole festival! We now await the County Finals on December 1st. Well done boys! The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme which was launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark. We as a school decided we wanted to apply and achieve the Gold Kitemark Award this year. After filling in the application criteria using last year’s success in sport, we are thrilled to say that on Thursday 5th October we were awarded the Gold Kitemark Award. KS2 Book Worms Key Stage 2 children have been meeting up once a week with their lunches to snuggle down with their current reading book and dive into a different World. The classroom is bursting with enthusiastic book worms!

Hadleigh Art Club Activities

WWW.THECOPPERKETTLEATKERSEYMILL.CO.UK FULLY LICENSED

Artists were completely stoned at a recent meeting of the ART Club. The exercise set was to decorate large pebbles. A selection of Acrylic paints and much ingenuity and imagination were employed and a fruitful afternoon’s work resulted. (Take a look at Hadleigh Art Club site on Facebook) Issy Cole conducted a watercolour workshop on October 24th and on the last day of the month members completed the work started at the workshop and shared the knowledge gained. The countryside around us is looking gloriously colourful now and on the 7th of November the subject suggested is Autumn leaves, seeds and seedheads. The 14th of November is an opportunity for artists to gaze at themselves in a mirror, for the subject is “A self-portrait”. November 21st it is suggested that members should follow in the footsteps of the old scribes; “A decorated letter”. Plenty of scope there for flourish and detail. On the last meeting of the month there’s a gentle reminder that Christmas is just a few weeks away; design your own Christmas cards. The Art Club meet on Tuesday afternoons at 2pm in the Hadleigh Library Seminar room and new members are always welcome.

After a short period of putting up their feet local couple Margaret and Patrick Palmer are now moving into the second year of running the not for profit, charity Suffolk Bereavement Support. The organisation recently held a Pop Information Event at Hadleigh Library and is also reaching further afield to Sudbury and the surrounding area to raise awareness of the service. The organisation offers support to the recently bereaved and those coping with a delayed reaction to loss and seeks to ease loss through group support, based on the value of working in groups as an alternative to one to one counselling. Groups are run by experienced group leaders and enable group members to safely share experiences of loss. Together with peer support the groups help members understand the many phases of loss and its impacts and to develop individual coping strategies to support the process of adjustment. Group members are put under no pressure at meetings and can simply observe and listen until they feel ready to join in. Encouragingly our groups report the uplifting and comforting effect of the expression of experiences with others in a similar situation, and which might otherwise be pent up and damaging to both mental and physical health. Groups are now held in Hadleigh (afternoon) and Capel St Mary (early evening) are free and open to Suffolk residents. If anyone would like further information please contact Patrick or Margaret: www.suffolkbereavement.org.uk; sbsg246@gmail.com; telephone 01206 299832

Xanthe’s quiz and auction night is a triumph! On behalf of Xanthe, we would like to say a huge thank you to all the companies, and shops in and around Hadleigh, who donated raffle and auction prizes for our fundraising night, in aid of our daughter, Xanthe. Particular thanks to Frosts Estate Agents who kindly sponsored the welcome drinks, and to Smugglers catering for their wonderful food on the night. The evening was a huge success and the money raised will be spent Xanthe's ongoing therapy needs, further to her having pneumococcal meningitis and a stroke as a baby. She is making great progress, and it is thanks to these evenings that we can ensure that she continues to do so, and reach her potential in life. Hugo and Jess Carter

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Atishoo! I wonder what’s making me sneeze, could be most of the recent arrivals who have feathers rather than fur! The casualties include five pigeons, another owl, a jay and a partridge. All these would birds would tease Ollie (the Black) Cat dreadfully but he is also on the sick list after suffering a nasty abcess. Don’t worry, he’s on the mend and will soon be trying to take my place as your SESAW correspondent again. Meanwhile he has asked me to tell you about the cats and kittens still with us. Poor little Peabody is back since his “happy ending” didn’t work out. As top dog around here I don’t have a great affinity with cats but can’t help feeling sorry for him, especially as so many humans overlook us black animals. I would also love to see two year old Domino, Sooty and Sweep rehomed. They are three feral cats in need of a farm with a cosy barn and a kind person to keep an eye on them. Thank you to all who attended our £1 Sale at the Ansell Centre which raised £301 last month. Our last event of the year is our Christmas Fair at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX on 19th November. Lots of festive goodies on offer, great prizes in the big raffle and Mary’s top class Tombola, refreshments and free parking. Please remember to keep your animals safe from the sight and sounds during Guy Fawkes season. A warm bed or snuggly blanket next to the Rayburn is the best place for all pets including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk In last month’s column I explained that I would be launching a parliamentary petition urging the Government to support the construction of a Sudbury Bypass. I have been delighted by the response since then from all sides of the debate. Wherever one stands on the issue, it’s great to have such widespread public discourse. Of course, there are many who worry about congestion and pollution in Sudbury but would not want a bypass to be built near the water meadows. I quite understand; any route must be as environmentally sympathetic as possible. Many also fear that a bypass would result in lots of development along its flanks. To this, I can only reiterate that across South Suffolk we have real examples of very effective bypasses – Boxford, Hadleigh and Long Melford - and it is striking how those roads, all built some years ago, remain flanked by open countryside rather than a parade of housing estates and factories. Indeed, imagine if tomorrow we decided that in order to preserve our countryside we would grass over the Boxford, Hadleigh or Long Melford bypasses. Can one imagine Boxford with all the traffic going through it that currently goes down the 1071? Likewise Hadleigh. How much harder would it be to get from Sudbury to Bury without the Melford bypass? In such campaigns it’s easy to exaggerate fearful impressions of the impact change will have. But if we don’t change the way traffic moves around Sudbury I genuinely fear for the town’s future health. To this it is argued that we can still move the HGVs and heavy traffic out without a bypass, just by moving the strategic lorry route. To which I say, where to? Lorries cannot vanish. They can either go through other communities likely to fiercely object, or they can drive through Sudbury. Alternatively, they can drive round it - but only if we build a bypass. The petition is available to sign online at www.sudburybypass.org.uk. In addition, paper copies are available to sign at Sudbury Town Hall, Cornard Stevenson Centre, Winch & Blatch and other shops displaying a petition poster.

Hadleigh Parkside Pre-School It’s been a busy month at Preschool. We have been using our new talking clipboards to go on the field for a nature hunt. Our garden has had a big makeover with an added mud kitchen and shop front. The children have had lots of fun a Big Thankyou to Sam Jackson at Garden Worx! Christmas is not far away so call us to grab your tickets for our joint fundraising event with Diamond - Lites Majorettes on December 17th ‘Sunday with Santa’. We also have a stall at the Long Bessels lighting up on 25th November so please come and support us. Don't forget we pick up every day from St Mary school at lunch time and now offer after school pick up from Station Road every day. Contact us for further information and to book a place.

Festival Legacy Update Just recently some of the Hadleigh Festival of Gardening and Art Organising Team visited Auctioneers Reeman and Dansie for the soul purpose of securing something of Glyn Morgan’s estate for Hadleigh. An enormous number of the artist’s work, memorabilia and his books were due to come under the hammer that day. Happily the shoppers were able to keep up with the hectic bidding and secure some sketches and several sketch books belonging to the talented, one time student of Sir Cedric Morris. These are now in safe keeping until there is a suitable time and place to exhibit them. If you know the name of the boy in Morgan’s sketch please contact 01473 827091 or 824957 or 827752.

Butter a 24cm/9in ovenproof dish. Spoon the fruit mixture into the bottom, then sprinkle the crumble mixture on top. 5. Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until the crumble is browned and the fruit mixture bubbling. 6. Serve with thick cream or custard.

Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser It was encouraging to see so many townsfolk engage with the District Council officers in the Guildhall with respect to Babergh & Mid Suffolk Joint Local Plan. It is important that we are aware of planning issues whether they are close by or in the future, so that we might consider their full implications for us. The JLP is mostly a DC responsibility, but many of the associated issues, from education services through to the rights of way network, will of course be for the Cllr Mick Fraser County Council. Some planning applications are solely the responsibility of SCC, such as the supply of aggregates. I mention this as currently there is an application to install a wash plant with associated silt lagoons at the Hadleigh Quarry, which if granted could possibly lead to issues such as an increase of HGV traffic on the bypass and other safety concerns. There have been numerous objections submitted to this application and I have therefore ensured that it will decided by the relevant committee, rather than a delegation officer. My monthly surgery will be on the third Saturday of the month, the next one being on 18th November 2017 from 11am until noon in the Sharron Elliott room of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. Highways faults can be reported at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-andtransport/ or by telephone on: 0345 606 6171. mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk. mob: 0793 551 2591

As some of you may be aware I have recently been conducting part of my ‘A’ level geography coursework in and around Hadleigh. My research was based on ‘water insecurity’ with the aim to investigate Anglian Water’s ‘drop 20’ campaign and considering homeowner’s attitudes to the safety of future water supply. To gain information on this aspect I conducted some fieldwork distributing 160 questionnaires across various roads and streets in Hadleigh’. I received almost 100 responses and I would like to thank those who completed the questionnaire giving me adequate information and comment for me to complete my work. There were many interesting facts that emerged including one that only just over half of the households were aware of the source of their domestic water supply but almost 45% were unfamiliar with detail of their water supply journey. I discovered that 60% of homeowners accepted that hosepipe bans, and other water restrictions, were accepted as a positive action but 40% believed restrictions and other enforcements were either ineffective or unachievable. Results like these assisted me in understanding publics views on water supply and of the actions being taken by suppliers to conserve supplies. Such results could not be gained without Hadleigh residents support, so once again thank you for your views and opinions. If you are interested in knowing more about my coursework or have any questions then please feel free to email me; ellenannjay@hotmail.co.uk

Hadleigh’s response to my Coursework Questionnaire

We did not have a speaker for our October meeting but instead we enjoyed a Harvest Supper. This was a delicious two-course meal catered by Helen Golland of Angel Delights. We were delighted to welcome one new member and two recently joined members. It was a very relaxed and convivial evening as everyone just wanted to chat and catch up. Sophie Rickards, our President, conducted the business of the evening over the coffee and mints as there were quite a few forthcoming events to discuss. The Lunch Club will not be meeting this Friday as we had the meal this evening. We will, however, meet as usual next month on the third Tuesday, in the Seminar Room above the Library when our talk will be about Pearls and Gem Stones. New members are always welcome and if anyone would like any further information, please contact Rae Stapleton. Tel:01473 823585 or email: raestapleton@hotmail.co.uk

News from St. Mary’s Primary We are back at school after a lovely summer break and it’s already nearly time for another! Harvest We celebrated Harvest time by gathering donations for the charity FIND and we invited parents to a Harvest service in the school. Each class presented work they had completed. Ash class sang a lovely scarecrow song with actions the children had learned; Year 1 produced a fruit basket collage and Year 2 created ears of corn using Cheerios! Meanwhile, Key Stage 2 children were creating too. Year 3 created a Thankfulness piece of work; Year 4 wrote Harvest poetry; Year 5 did research projects about Harvest in other countries and Year 6 wrote prayers. It was lovely to see so many parents at the service. We also shared our work during the Harvest service at St Mary’s Church. Lots of children from the school took part in the service and they were fantastic representatives of the school. The children read the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 and told the congregation about the ‘journey’ of the cocoa bean from a farm in Ghana to becoming a chocolate bar on a supermarket shelf here in the UK. We linked the idea of Harvest to God’s generosity and to our school value of ‘thankfulness’. Thank you so much to the families that attended the St Edmundsbury Cathedral service on Sunday 15th October – “I am the way, the truth and the life.” The service was full of drama, song, dance and music celebrating being part of the family of church schools in the diocese. Our children carried our school banner and made us very proud! Guide Dogs for the Blind We were visited by Graham and Sandra, and they brought Graham's Guide Dog! We really enjoyed meeting them all, and learning what a Guide Dog's job is. We did work separately in our classes about what life was like as a blind person. Kingswood Year 6 had their trip to Kingswood. They had a fantastic time doing all sorts of exciting activities! When they came back, they presented an assembly to the whole school about what they had enjoyed and what they had done. We all enjoyed learning the camp songs they had learn, including joining in with the actions! Arts Mark Our school was awarded the “Gold Arts Mark”. They made the following comments: “The panel noted that the school has a very creative curriculum that includes a range of educational visits, exciting projects and that there is strong effective leadership for the arts across the school. Arts are seen as valuable in themselves but also effective in improving outcomes for pupils. Partnerships with other schools and organisations such as The Suffolk Music Service and Arts Access have contributed positively to children's experiences and to teacher professional development. The CPD offer was highlighted as active, vibrant and engaging”. Sports Festivals Year 5 & 6 took part in a dodgeball competition. The children were very enthusiastic, and were great ambassadors for the school, showing excellent behaviour and sportsmanship.

Hadleigh Steering Group Meeting 2nd October 2017 Notes of Proposals/Decisions/Actions Updates: Community Action Suffolk - Colonel Probert Award for Community Initiative. The Steering group had been nominated for and awarded the above in recognition of the unique collaboration between community, business and statutory groups that had enabled some fantastic community work to be achieved in Hadleigh. Jane was pleased to receive the award on behalf of the Steering Group. Proposal for Chair: JS announced that she will be standing down as Chair of this group at the December meeting. She needs to focus more time on other areas of her work and is anxious for the group to encourage greater participation in shared tasks. Since earlier requests to support the role of chair have not been forthcoming Jane proposed that the sole chair be replaced by a revolving chair. This would mean that each month a different person would have responsibility for preparing an agenda, and writing a short report of the meeting to go in HCN. It is hoped we will have the continued support of Babergh to provide minutes. JS advised that she has worked with this system elsewhere and it can work very well, however it obviously needs broad buy-in; should individuals not be able to meet their commitment, they arrange for a substitute. There was concern that his could result in the group becoming disjointed, losing focus. A proposal was made to replace with one chairman, no-one present offering to take on the role. There was further discussion regarding timing and frequency of meetings. The group will go away and consider these proposals and make any suggestions in writing. A way forward for the group will be decided at the November meeting. The Porch Project: Now has a permanent new home at 28 High St Hadleigh. The skate park event went very well. Hanging Baskets: Sincere thanks were extended to all involved with the delivery and support of the hanging baskets this year. Previously there were 23 in the High St, this year there were 60, the feedback from residents businesses and visitors to the town has been extremely positive. However, the success has brought its own issues. Whilst businesses were very happy to pay for and take on their baskets very few were able or prepared to water them regularly, so the volunteer effort required in ensuring that this was done was enormous and unsustainable in the future. A quote has been requested from a business to supply this service but there is concern that these costs added to the purchase of the basket will make it an unattractive proposition for businesses. Do Festivals benefit the town? The 2016 Year of the Sheep festival was supported by a lottery grant so written feedback was required and provided in a report, however this year’s Gardening and Arts festival was sponsored by business and community groups and a review has not been prepared yet. Visit England are very clear that local festivals benefit a town and make it more attractive as a visitor destination. It was advised that a specialist event at St Mary’s raised over £900 with most of the visitors coming from outside of town. It was also commented that visitors staying in the town are very appreciative of the bunting and the different events, all enhancing the reputation of the town as an active community. Next Meeting: Monday 6th November 4.15pm at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Main Agenda items: Decision on Chairman/ Future Festivals ideas. All meetings are open to any members of the community If you have any suggestions for Agenda items please contact the Chairman, in good time, before the meeting. snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk

Treatment for Back Pain at Hadleigh Osteopaths Four out of five people will experience some form of back pain during their lives. This may be a simple injury in childhood or a developmental problem such as scoliosis, or may be the result of a work related or sports injury. As we grow older, degenerative conditions may present as back pain. Back pain can be brought on by lifting, moving awkwardly or by an accident. Sometimes it can come on without any specific injury to your back. Stress, depression, posture, being overweight, sedentary living and poor lifestyle habits can all be significant factors. Whilst pain killing medication can help, experts all agree that gentle activity and manual therapy such as osteopathy are the most successful way of helping people deal with it. After taking a full medical history and completing a thorough examination, our osteopaths will diagnose the cause of the back pain and propose a course of treatment. This may include stretching, massage and gentle manipulation of the joints. People can feel a range of symptoms such as stiffness, tenderness and mild to very severe pain. The pain can come on quite suddenly or over time, and be located anywhere in the spine from the top of the neck to the pelvis. Sometimes pressure from the back on the nerves can cause pain or pins and needles and numbness in the legs and arms. X-rays, scans and other tests are sometimes required to make a diagnosis. If osteopathy treatment cannot completely heal or discover the cause of the back pain, your osteopath may refer to your GP or a specialist for any additional investigation. Osteopaths are well known for treating back pain and patients report high satisfaction with treatment. There is good quality evidence supporting the beneficial effects of manipulation for back pain and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE)recommends osteopathy for sub-acute and chronic low back pain Treatment is different in every individual and sometimes it might involve treating other areas in the body such as the hips or neck We may offer advice on your lifestyle particularly if we feel something you are doing repetitively is part of the reason why you have back pain. We may offer advice on your posture and give advice on diet and exercise or give you specific exercises. So you are buying or selling your property and you have to choose a conveyancing solicitor. On first appearances it can be difficult to tell different companies apart. But there is one question you should always ask your potential choice of conveyancing solicitor… Does your service include a No Sale, No Fee Promise as standard? What is a No Sale, No Fee Promise? A No Sale, No Fee Promise means that should your property transaction, purchase and/or sale, fall-through (go abortive) for whatever reason you will not pay any of the legal fees you were quoted. If your conveyancing solicitor does not provide a No Sale, No Fee Promise, you will be charged all or part of the legal fee you were originally quoted, regardless of the fact you have nothing to show for it. An example: Here is an example of the costs you could face if your property transaction falls-through and your conveyancing solicitor does not protect you with a No Sale, No Fee Promise: Solicitors fees on first transaction = £600 +VAT (total £720) Abortive costs at exchange of contracts = £480 + VAT (total £576) Solicitors fees on second transaction = £600 +VAT (total £720) TOTAL = £1080 +VAT (total £1,296) As the figures above demonstrate, it is easy to find yourself substantially out of pocket due to conveyancing fees, mortgage costs, and surveys. Which? estimate that the average amount lost by those individuals in this situation is a staggering £2,899. If you were protected by a No Sale, No Fee promise you would not pay the £576 cost associated with the first abortive transaction in the example above. All you would be charged for is any disbursements that may have been paid out to third parties, such as search fees if you were purchasing a property. How likely is it my transaction will fall-through? Unfortunately, it might be more likely than you think and the rate may be increasing. Figures revealed by Rightmove show that 30% of the properties marked ‘sale agreed’ ended up being available on the site again, the highest percentage over the past four years. What is frustrating is that if your transaction does fall-through, it is unlikely to even be your fault and is much more likely to be due to an issue with another transaction in the chain, of which yours is just one. However, those using Holmes & Hills Solicitors’ conveyancing services will be pleased to hear that clients of the firm have a much lower risk of their transaction fallingthrough, less than 15%. Why do transactions fall through? As you might expect, there are a wide range of reasons for property transactions falling-through and most causes will be beyond your control. However, in the experience of the conveyancing solicitors at Holmes & Hills, the most common reasons are: • A disagreement between the seller and the buyer and this cannot be resolved. • Either the seller or the buyer changes their mind. • Issues raised on a survey or a valuation regarding the value or condition of the property. • The seller or the buyer’s circumstances change due to a change of job or breakdown of a relationship. No Sale, No Fee Conveyancing from Holmes & Hills Solicitors Holmes & Hills Solicitors now protect all conveyancing clients with a No Sale, No Fee Promise* as standard. This makes Holmes & Hills the only local firm to offer such a promise as standard, at no additional cost to you. Not only are you protected with Holmes & Hills’ conveyancing services, but you also benefit from the fact that property transactions dealt with by Holmes & Hills Solicitors also have a lower likelihood of fallingthrough in the first place, over half the national average. That makes for double the protection against the risk of your property transaction not proceeding to completion. Is there a catch? No, there is no catch to Holmes & Hills’ No Sale, No Fee Promise. It’s simple, if your transaction falls-through, you do not pay us any of the legal fee we originally quoted. Whilst there are some minor exclusions to protect against fraud, in all other instances if your property transaction fallsthrough, you will not pay Holmes & Hills’ conveyancing fee. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre How much we like the smell of apples here! Loads of windfall apples littered the ground by the arena and made the mouths of the herd water as they worked. They are not allowed to snack whilst being ridden of course, but Lyn lets them have a treat before they get turned out at the end of the day’s lessons. Since they are walking round the arena for perhaps four lessons in half a day the live horses naturally get a little bored. Lyn has a team of able-bodied riders who exercise the horses and ponies on a regular basis to keep them fit and happy. I thought these pictures of Bob and Alfie on their return from hacking out with Chris and Sue looked nice, especially as the weather was kind. When the sun streams in to the yard everyone looks happy. My last photo shows Parys enjoying the sun on her back; she has been lame for seven weeks now, having to live in her box and watch the others being ridden, poor girl. Luckily Babs and I don’t have those problems, although Babs has started groaning loudly when she is giving a ride, I find I can’t sleep whist that is going on. The herd will survive Guy Fawkes night; I hope you all have fun with your fireworks too and please spare a thought for animals who don’t like bangs. There is a shoot where we live and the herd gets a bit anxious when the guns start popping. What we’d really like is to have someone shoot some rabbits for us, we wouldn’t complain at all. They are taking over the world! Rabbit pie anyone? Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

A Hadleigh company punching above their weight

We all have so many financial commitments these days that we tend to put ourselves last in line of priorities, we undervalue our health. However an investment in dealing with your health issues will allow you to do all the things that you want to do, but aren't able to at the moment. I'll be publishing case studies on here every issue, this will allow you to understand exactly what we do when we "MOT" someone at Hadleigh Acupuncture & Wellness. One of my recent case studies came to me with lower back pain. During the consultation we identified that this person also suffers with sleeping problems and tension headaches. The patient didn't know we are able to help with the other problems, so I proposed a treatment plan to deal with the back pain but also tackle the other issues. After six treatments the lower back pain has gone, there's a more restful sleep and no headaches and after speaking to the GP the patient no longer requires pain medications. This patient now has more energy and feels more relaxed, which has had a knock on effect on all aspects of their life. I am regularly asked these two questions: Does acupuncture have strong scientific evidence to successfully treat a wide range of health conditions? YES. Do private healthcare insurance policies cover the costs of acupuncture? YES, the majority will. Get in touch to book a FREE consultation to find out how acupuncture can help you! Local company GinPunch, the craft gin specialists, set up a year ago with the aim of bringing true small batch craft gin to a national audience whilst also telling the stories of the people behind the distilleries. Apart from selling this beautiful craft gin on their website www.ginpunch.com, they have devised ways in which people can try the premium products without breaking the bank. Some of the premium gin bottles sell for upwards of £40 so the new ‘GinTubes’, which is now a registered trade mark, is a way of trying and sharing craft gin at a more affordable rate. A GinTube is a sturdy recycled postal tube which neatly fits 2 or 3 100ml bottles of craft gin carefully decanted with the permission of the brand owners. Other similar products only use 25ml or 50ml bottles but our 100ml bottle is equivalent to 4 x singles or 2 x doubles in each. That’s 4 x doubles or 6 x doubles in a GinTube depending on the size you choose. Cutting down on waste packaging is a big drive for the business and giving people a greater gin choice whilst reducing their carbon footprint is a win-win scenario. GinPunch are constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of the spirit drink market and that is evident in their new product called ‘Tipsy Crackers’. Tipsy Crackers are Christmas or party crackers with a ‘tipsy’ centre treat – gin, rum or tequila! They have limited stocks so I would advise getting your orders in early. www.ginpunch.com

Recently Hadleigh Community Choir have left the safe confines of the URC and even performed outside Hadleigh! We have matched the mood of three very different events during early autumn. We were pleased once again to sing at the Mayor’s Civic Service in St Mary’s Church on Sept 24th. Although quite a formal occasion, we hoped that the rain would fall soft on the fields of the congregation – through the lines of ‘The Irish Blessing’. Next was a more relaxed affair when we went to the opening of Hadleigh Hall Nursing Home on Sept 26th. We sang al fresco and, as Barry McGuigan was there, we felt we had to give Irish Blessing another airing. Apparently he loved it! Staff and residents also appreciated the sentiment of Love Changes Everything and have asked us back at Christmas time. Big thanks to the staff for looking after us so well, not just with a BBQ but a glass of bubbly too – same again at Christmas? Lastly on October 16th we headed for Bury St Edmunds to the emotional Hate Crime Vigil. The theme was contemplation and reflection and we were asked to talk to each other to find something we had in common and something that was different. There was a fantastic poem called ‘Make Hate History’ by Penny Parker and a fascinating story about Jelly Babies – look them up! Again we chose songs suitable for the occasion including Fix You and Lean on Me, which the audience enjoyed joining in with. Debbie Charles, the organiser, expressed her thanks and says she loves our inclusive, community outlook. If you would like the choir to perform at an event you are holding, please get in touch. Watch out for us next at the lighting-up ceremony. If you’re interested in joining the choir, now is the perfect time as we start to learn new songs for our February concert. Entente Cordiale at Christmas! “It’s possibly my favourite time of the yearâ€? enthuses Cathy Bullen of Bildeston’s French Decorative boutique The Boule-in “I just adore all the glitter and magic and the fact one’s thinking of others - finding the perfect gift is so exciting!â€? Cathy and her husband Peter have clearly had a wonderful time sourcing new stock for their up coming FĂŞte de NĂśel as their barn and garden is a veritable treasure trove of fabulous decorative pieces for the home and truly thoughtful gifts this Christmas. “There’s nothing nicer than being given something really thought out - a special gift doesn’t have to be extravagant, just personal and hopefully original: What could be nicer than a lovely vase to go with your flowers, a decanter filled with bubble bath or a wonderful old vine corkscrew to go with that bottle of wine!â€? In her enthusiasm Cathy does concede that Christmas shopping can be exhausting “Which is why we try and make our FĂŞte de NĂśel a really happy and original shopping experience and part of the whole fun of Christmas there’s mulled wine and french carols and an abundance of unusual gifts that we’ve sourced from all over France. My biggest problem is wanting to keep the gorgeous things we find!â€? Perhaps she should take note of antique expert Mark Hill, who commented "The Boule-in is perfect gifting territory - self gifting includedâ€? East Anglian Garden Group We began the autumn season of talks, not with the advertised ‘Something Silver’ with Howard Drury, as he was unwell, but with a lively and fascinating talk on the Art and Iris Collection of Sir Cedric Morris, by Sarah Cook. Sarah was Head Gardener at Sissinghust for 14 years, and following early retirement, moved back to the Hadleigh area to research and find as many of the varieties as she could, of the Iris’s bred at Benton End. She has now established the National Collection of these elegant and strikingly coloured plants. We heard about Sir Cedric’s life at his home in Hadleigh, of his pupils and his art. He was a prolific painter of landscapes, birds, plants and portraits, as well as a keen gardener and plantsman, and a major influence for other gardeners, for example, Beth Chatto. We were very lucky to have this insight into his life, and to have Sarah step into the breach at the last moment. Thank you Sarah! Our next meeting, the AGM on Saturday November 4th, will feature Ken Thompson, with his talk - Modern Garden Myths. He will be casting a quizzical eye on gardening topics including how bees improve strawberries, the difference between Spanish and English bluebells, compost tea, how plants get sunburn, and why planting by the moon is, so he says, utter nonsense. Annual subscriptions are due on this date, and the cost of this is still only ÂŁ12 for the year, so do consider joining us. Also at this meeting, Barbara Segall, will be signing copies of her new book, Secret Gardens of East Anglia, with stunning photography by the late Marcus Harpur. Our celebrity speaker on Saturday 17th February 2018, is CLEVE WEST, with his talk Healing Gardens, and it will be held at Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston, and not at Hitcham Village Hall, as it holds more people. Please contact us if you wish to come, as tickets are limited, and there is already a lot of interest, as you can imagine. Introducing our talented member of staff, Ken Oliver who has created a brilliant guide on the ‘The Wildlife of Hadleigh and District’. Now available at the library for £3.50 with all profits going to Friends of Hadleigh Library. Originally from West Yorkshire, Ken has lived with his family in Suffolk for over 25 years. He has worked here at the library since 1999 and is also a freelance wildlife artist and illustrator. Ken’s interest in natural history and photography has inspired him to produce this booklet to share his enthusiasm and knowledge with local residents and visitors to Hadleigh. All photographs were taken locally by Ken and illustrations used are from his original paintings. The guide is an introduction to the local wildlife and is aimed at the amateur and enthusiast alike. The species lists are by no means exhaustive, but are an indication of the large variety of plants, birds, mammals, butterflies and moths, and other creatures often observed whilst walking along the footpaths around Hadleigh. All drawn from Ken’s own observations. The variety of species fluctuates in accordance to the season; the spring and summer bring in many species of birds and insects which breed here or are passing through on their way further north. Winter migrants boost the numbers of our native species and form large flocks making the more unusual species more noticeable - especially if they visit garden bird feeders. There are many superb nature guides which give full coverage of all sections of our country’s wildlife, yet sometimes having so many species not found in our region can make specimen identification frustrating. The illustrations represent a mixture of the common and less common species, enabling the observer to recognise the species and name it. Visit the library to pick up a copy today! Hadleigh and Boxford PPG Patient Participation Group We are a group of patient volunteers who act as representatives of the patient population, connecting and providing a means of communication between our general practice and the community it serves. We meet on a regular basis to have open and constructive discussions about the services available – always with a view to taking action to make real improvements for patients and for the practice. We are also developing a virtual group for online discussion and opinion for those unable to attend meetings. We aim to affect change by involving patients and their carers in improving the health and well-being of the local community. Did you know? Only 23 % of our patients currently use the online appointment system although many more according to our March survey would like to. We want to help to improve this with your support. This will help you and the practice. Members of the PPG will be available soon to offer support and training to those who would like to use the online facilities. Dates will be advertised or contact the PPG if you are interested. November 13th – 19th is National Self-care Week. This year’s theme is “Embracing Self-care for Life Starting November 3rd the Physiotherapy Team at Hadleigh Health Centre are planning to start a regular hourly session of 'Health Walks' on a Friday afternoon from 2 pm lasting about an hour. Everyone is welcome. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking every day can benefit your health, improve the way you feel and reduce the risk of a number of long-term conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Active 10 quickly and simply shows you how many brisk 10 minute walks you're doing and how to fit more into your day. This is a free downloadable app. Many patients are not aware they need to give signed permission for their G.P. medical records to be shared with other professionals. There are many benefits for doing this including for example enabling organisations that are working together to support your care by finding relevant information when they need it. The risks need to be explored too. You may be concerned that sensitive information might be shared. This debate will be the opening discussion for the VPPG. We will be interested to hear your views. Rachel takes part in The Big Fun Run On Saturday 14th Oct I joined many other runners at Christchurch Park in Ipswich to take part in the Big Fun Run. Everyone taking part has their own special reasons and many were supporting some amazing charities. My reasons for taking part were multiple. This time last year I was experiencing the worst episode of depression I had ever had in over twenty years. Getting out of bed every morning was a gargantuan task, my brain felt frazzled and everything around me was grey. I had no enthusiasm, felt no joy and the sense of futility and dread was my constant companion. Fast forward one year and I am well into recovery and feel stronger and more motivated than ever. In fact my spark started to kick back in again a week before Christmas last year and my health has continued to improve and stabilise. My recovery was accelerated by the love and support I was shown by my family and friends. The cherry on the top of my recovery cake presented itself to me in the form of my employers Suffolk Artlink. The Charity which was set up to provide inclusive and accessible creative activities, gave me the time and support to get well. They saw me as a valuable asset to the team and their encouragement and belief in me did not stop just because I was unwell. Their view that I was still the same person, despite my health struggles motivated me to fight hard to get well again and back to the job I love as a learning support tutor within the Jumpstart programme. Suffolk Artlink have been an integral part of Dementia Support and awareness in Hadleigh running creative opportunities for people with dementia and their careers. The project I work with supports adults with learning disabilities to celebrate

achievement and participation through creativity. I am very privileged to work with such talented individuals and support them as they work with professional artists on each module of the course . Our current module Protest Arts has enabled many of our students to have a voice and speak out about issues that they feel strongly about, being bullied, the need for more kindness in the world and other injustices. The conversations have developed and many t-shirt, badges and posters have been made as a result, which will be sold at pop up shops at the end of the course in December. This year World Mental Health Day takes place on Tuesday 10th October. The emphasis this year focused on mental health and the workplace. This seems particularly apt to me considering the situation I found myself in. Suffolk Artlink is a relatively small charity and I knew my presence and role was missed within the team, in the short time I had to take off to get well. However, they never doubted that I would return and therefore treated me as a human being not just a number or a commodity. It would be great if all employers invested in the wellbeing of their staff in this way!! Running has been a fantastic aid to my mental and physical wellbeing and taking part in the 5k fun run on Saturday gave me the opportunity to publicly celebrate my recovery through taking part in this challenge. At the same time, taking part also gave me the opportunity to give back to the Charity I work for and raise vital funds to continue the work that we do in the community connecting individuals and groups through creativity. We are all neurologically diverse. As a society we would benefit from awareness issues surrounding mental health and wealth, particularly in the work place. This would enable individuals to speak up and admit to needing help/ understanding without fear of shame or recrimination. When I ran on Saturday after weeks of training, I felt honoured to wear my Artlink t-shirt and felt very grateful that I have been so supported in my recovery. It's lovely to see lots of groups in Hadleigh offering support to individuals who are struggling with their mental health. My own battle was exacerbated my a misdiagnosis and subsequent reaction to the medication prescribed. It can happen to anyone, no one is immune. However the good news is that there is a lot we can do to support ourselves and others around us. I have found exercise to be a great mood stabiliser. Pink on the playlist is my running partner and she reminds me that I am not running to be a size 10 but to stay mentally and physically well. Awareness isn't just about sharing a post on fb, it's about acceptance and understanding on a human and personal level and through our actions. But perhaps most importantly the fight against mental health begins with kindness, to ourselves and each other. Rachel Bennett, Learning Support Tutor, Jumpstart

One in four drivers still use their mobile phones at the wheel – despite the introduction of harsher penalties for those who are caught breaking the law. In March, the Government cracked down on offenders by doubling the punishment from three points to six and increasing the fine to £200. Since then, the number of motorists who chat, text, email or check social media has fallen – but 23% of those questioned by the RAC admitted they still habitually use their phone while driving. Drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a crash while using their phone, the motoring organisation said. The RAC’s Report on Motoring 2017 survey also suggests that 40% of drivers send messages, write emails and check social media while sitting Hugh Rowland in traffic – despite the fact it is against the law. RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams said: “It is clear we have a hard core of persistent offenders who believe they can get away with it by continuing to flout the law.” The number of people who illegally make or receive calls is falling – from 31% in 2016 to 23% this year. Of the 15% of drivers who the RAC calls “hardcore” law breakers, 57% were men. In July, Suffolk Police launched a campaign to change the perception of how people view the offence, with the aim to make using a phone at the wheel as socially unacceptable as drinkdriving. Police say using a mobile behind the wheel is one of the ‘fatal four’ traffic offences, along with drink/drug-driving, driving too fast, and failing to wear a seatbelt. How can Gotelee’s criminal law lawyers help you? We all know how important it is to stay safe on the roads. But even with the best of intentions sometimes things can go wrong and the police become involved. If you are under investigation or have been charged with an offence, we won’t judge – instead, we’ll carefully assess your situation and advise on the best way forward. Gotelee has a wealth of experience in representing those who are alleged to have broken the law. Our team of expert lawyers can explain the options open to you in a clear and understandable way. Gotelee has offices in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Melton. Kersey Mill Newsletter

Do you have back, neck or joint pain?

Works this month have been an important part of the restoration on the hurst frame, the central framework to hold the heavy grinding stones. The sturdy wooden framework supports the gears and the grinding stones and was originally built around 1810. There had been over the years much deterioration and the frame was extremely rotten in places. We have discovered evidence of earlier machinery including to what is seen today, we have discovered the Bridge trees originally were made from wood and subsequently replaced with the cast iron Bridge Tress that can be seen today probably circa 1860 when the mill underwent a major overhaul including the rear extension that housed 3 further pairs of stones that were stem driven and a lot of automation introduced when the mill was converted to a white flour mill. The Hurst Fame is particularly interesting in having a horizontal "lay-shaft" resulting with three pairs of stones being in a straight line. These works will continue into the new year. Once the structure has been rebuilt our attention will move to the gearing and reinstatement of the stones. This year we will be able to offer more surprises with this restoration work for our popular fundraising events Santa’s Workshop. Without these fundraising events our restoration wouldn’t be possible. Tickets for Santa’s Workshop events throughout December are available and can be purchased through the ticket agency www.kerseymll.net or alternatively through 01473 8293317. Every child (oh and the adults) will have a magical and unique Christmas adventure.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 9th October 2017.... We had something a little bit different last time out - butterfly conservation, it proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Peter Maddison was an engaging speaker and we all came away knowing a lot more about these fascinating creatures which brighten up and add life to our gardens. As I write this (mid October) there are certainly still butterflies about, mostly Red Admiral, taking advantage of the nectar store in shows of Michaelmas daisies. Certainly we can all do more to encourage butterfies to our gardens by introducing more nectar producing plants throughout the growing season, starting with crocus in early spring. And just be careful if you venture into your shed in the winter months as that untidy corner could well be the ideal place for one or more of the five hibernating species that come to our region. Well done to Julia Wild whose Michaelmas daisy display ( minus any butterflies) was the clear winner of our monthly competition. And next up on Monday October 13th November..... We welcome back Matt Tanton-Brown, who many of you will know from his gardening expert slots on BBC Radio Suffolk. He last visited us back in August for our hugely successful Gardeners' Question Time event along with two of his BBC colleagues. Matt is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker and this time he will be covering a subject we gardeners all dread, but could always do with learning more about - pests and diseases. The meeting will start at 7.30 at Hadleigh Town Hall (entrance opposite The Ram). As usual it is just £1 for members and £3 for non members, surely a bargain evening out in anyone's book, with light refreshments included. There will be our usual raffle and plant stall, with the November competition, for anyone who wishes to enter being 'A vase of Autumn flowers'. It was encouraging to see a number of first time attendees at our October meeting and each indicated they would be coming again. So do come and join our friendly and growing group - gardening, as many of us know (and thankfully for those of us who work in it!) is a year round pastime and there is still much to do, even as winter approaches. If you have any interest in gardening do come along and join us next time when we will be learning about pests and diseases - controlling them, not catching them! Andy Leeder, Chairman

Down to Earth ...with Dave October started well with a trip to the Beth Chatto gardens Elmstead Market near Colchester. The weather was very kind to us with sunshine all day. Beth Chatto, who is now in her 95th year, is one of the most influential plantswomen of her time , with well over 2000 different varieties of plants growing in what is, virtually, her private garden. As well as the famous dry garden that was once a car park, there is now a scree garden and a large new timber building which is the venue for her educational trust. Her mantra is, as always, right plant right place. No garden visit is complete without the purchase of a plant and this time we bought a purple heuchera called plum pudding. This has unusually been planted in the basket where the trailing tomatoes were grown earlier in the year, new compost of course. Some small ivy cuttings have been planted with it and this should give a splash of colour for the winter. The experiment with growing dahlias on the allotment for cutting has worked reasonably well, with a bunch taken home most weeks, no doubt the first frost will put an end to them and they will end up on the compost heap. One of the three compost heaps has been emptied with the well rotted contents used as a top dressing on the daffodil bed and elsewhere. The cycle continues with old hosta leaves and asparagus ferns, runner bean stalks, windfall apples, annual weeds, lawn mowings, pet bedding etc etc being used to start a new heap. All mixed in with horse manure from the very handy stables. The general rule at this time of year is to remove saucers from beneath pots, but we have had so little rain lately that I shall leave mine for now.The same applies for moving into the greenhouse for the winter. With luck I can get everything under cover quickly if a frost is forecast. The seventy plus pansies bought as plug plants earlier in the year are nearly ready to go out into their various baskets and pots. The geraniums they replace will go on the compost, with new plants so reasonable and space at a premium in the greenhouse, it's hardly worth trying to overwinter them. Now is the time to cut autumn fruiting raspberries right down to the ground, unlike the summmer fruiting varieties where only ths year's fruiting branches are cut out. If you pick up fallen leaves with a rotary lawnmower they will be partly shredded and will decompose much quicker. As we don't have many leaves ours are put on the compost. One idea for next year is the installing of some seeper hoses around the garden. These look like a normal hose but they are porous and allow water to gradually just seep out. The water is directed right where it is needed with much less waste. That's all for this time, Dave

Put a stop to this threat to our roads and children’s safety

Stop the expansion of Hadleigh Quarry The small quarry at Aldham Mill Hill has applied to Suffolk County Council for permission to install a huge washing / processing plant, 4 associated silt lagoons and a stockpile. If approved it would totally alter the nature of the site and lead to a massive increase in the range of activities undertaken there, with wide ranging and serious consequences.

• The wash plant would be a monster piece of equipment – equivalent in length to 3 big buses. In fact, it is suspiciously large relative to the quarry’s output. So much so that we suspect a longer term, hidden agenda to bring in aggregates from far and wide to keep the monster fed. • Apart from the risk of injury to children/teenagers from falling off the machinery and climbing on unstable stockpiles of gravel, the lagoons would create the additional risk of drowning. These worries are not groundless. Fencing around the quarry is completely inadequate and youngsters have been seen playing on the site already, and in one instance the police were called. • It would mean at least double the number of trucks on local roads which would add to the congestion and road safety problems already experienced at the Aldham Mill Hill/A1071 junction.

• The new installation would be noisy, create lots of dust and lead to mud on the road in winter.

Slow moving, heavy gravel trucks join Aldham Mill Hill here...

...and then use the ‘dogleg’ on the bypass – making this existing accident spot even more dangerous.

TO MORRISONS

Do you know of any accidents or near misses at this junction? Whether the quarry owners obtain S.C.C. permission to extend their commercial activities to the extent that they could permanently destroy this area of national beauty is something that cannot be forecast. But the fact remains that they will still be able to work the quarry under their present permission until the year 2040. The junction is inadequately designed for the amount of general traffic that passes through it currently, so imagine the risks of all those extra juggernauts joining it every working day.

We are aware that in August 2016 there was a serious collision at this junction, and another about a similar time this year. Should you know of any other incident or near miss it will be helpful to us to hear from you. You can email the address below with details. Plus if you have already made an objection using the petition, please make sure you’ve added your traffic concerns to your comments box. Email: fredbreyer12@gmail.com

STOP PRESS Hadleigh Town Council unanimously rejected a revised application (Oct 12) on the grounds of hidden and misleading agendas. Will SCC still go against Hadleigh public opinion now?

Why The Aldham Tye/Ivy Tree Lane Residents' Group want to stop the expansion of the Hadleigh Quarry Let this notice start with a denial. We are NOT a Nimby Protest Group we are concerned with what is about to result in disaster and affect the rest of Hadleigh if allowed to happen. The Hadleigh Quarry had been unused for decades since its minor use to supply the laying of the Hadleigh bypass and A1070 in 1985. In 2001 we contested an application by Tarmac to change their permit to intensify their working at the quarry and we were successful. The present owners of the permit, whose workings have been at a very low level in the last two years of ownership, are now applying to do virtually the same as the rejected Tarmac proposal, but on a much larger scale. The result will be an environmental disaster both to the landscape and to all the associated consequences which we are trying to protect future generations against. Above all is the effect that the expansion would have on the ever increasing traffic on the bypass at the Aldham Hill/Calais Street Junction AND ON ROAD SAFETY for everyone that uses that junction. Make your views and concerns known by signing our online petition – for details see our whole page in this issue. And please also make your views known to your local Councillor, be it Town, District or County. Hadleigh Town Council have made their objections to the plan, why not make yours? Thank you on behalf of the protest group, fredbreyer12@gmail.com

Hadleigh Town Forum Christmas Lighting Up Ceremony Saturday, 9th December 2017 Due to a lack of funding and the prohibitive road closure and traffic management costs, the Forum are unable to go ahead with plans to hold the Lantern Parade. We are now aiming, in the spirit of the community coming together, to keep it simple. We are still inviting children and their families to make their Christmas lanterns and take part in the Lighting-up Ceremony in Market Place, starting at 4.30pm. The ceremony will commence with a performance by the Hadleigh Community Choir, who will also lead the carol singing, and music will be provided by the Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band. This will be followed by the lighting of the Hadleigh Christmas Tree with further entertainment and community carols. The Women’s Institute will be selling mince pies and mulled wine, in the Ansell Centre, and the Hadleigh Scouts will have a food stall selling burgers, hotdogs and hot drinks etc. To start off what we hope will become a new Hadleigh tradition, we would like you to encourage your children to be creative and bring their own lanterns to light up the ceremony and if children (or adults) would like to dress up to get in the Christmas spirit, it all adds to the festivities. All children will need to be accompanied by an adult. Specimen templates and instructions have been posted on the Forum’s Christmas Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/christmasinhadleigh but children are encouraged to create their own designs. Ladies European Tour event at Stoke by Nayland ends with an exciting playoff – and begins with a celebrity Pro Am team win! Lydia Hall completed a wire to wire victory in the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke by Nayland but there were a few unplanned diversions en route. Not least the sudden-death play-off with France’s Ines Escudier following a two shot swing on the par three final hole on the Gainsborough course at the Suffolk resort. Escudier, who began the day four shots behind Hall, birdied it for a six-under par round of 66 and complete the tournament’s 54-holes in nine-under. Hall, by contrast, bogeyed it. Back up the 18th tee the pair went but it was the 29-year-old PGA Assistant from Wales who appeared least fazed by the drama and ended up winning the 5,000 euro first prize. Lydia Hall, winner of the “The win was down to my putting again,” said Stoke by Nayland WPGA Hall, who recently spent time in Abu Dhabi and LETAS championship concentrating on honing that side of her game and making a couple of changes. “I’m playing a lot better now that I’ve sorted it out. I must say, though, the tense finish wasn’t in my plans. Ines made me work hard for my win – so did the three girls immediately behind us.” That trio comprising Scotland’s Michele Thomson, Emma Nilsson of Sweden, and Spain’s Luna Sobron finished two shots behind Hall and Escudier on sevenunder to win €1650 apiece. As in previous years, a popular Pro Am preceded the 3 day championship and finished with a gala dinner and prize giving. The event this year was won by the celebrity “Media team” with a score of 85. The team included BBC TV Look East presenters, Stewart White and Tom Williams, Tamara Unwin, one of the family owners at Stoke by Nayland, and their professional, Meghan MacLaren who is leading the LETAS rankings and is assured a place in the Winning Pro Am Team: l to r Stewart main tour next season. On The Way to Jerusalem In this article we remember: Joshua Robert Rowley - 2 November 1917 Arthur James Chisnall - 6 November 1917 In early November 1917 in Palestine the British Army faced the Ottoman Empire troops at the Gaza-Beersheba line which stood formidably between the Allies and the all important city of Jerusalem. Earlier attacks to break the line had failed but by the end of October 1917 after a week of bombardment; 88,000 Allied infantry troops of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) began what became known as the Third Battle of Gaza. Intense fighting during the first days of November saw the Gaza-Beersheba line collapse, forcing the Ottoman Seventh & Eighth Armies to retreat. The EEF fought several battles as they pursued the enemy, eventually capturing Jerusalem on 9 December 1917. It is estimated that around eighty Hadleigh men were involved, all territorial soldiers serving with either the 5th Suffolks or the Suffolk Yeomanry now dismounted and renamed the 15th Suffolks. Three Hadleigh men lost their lives during the advance to Jerusalem, two in November. The first was Joshua Robert Rowley who was born in London in 1893 the son of Sir Joshua Thelluson (5th Baronet) Rowley of Tendring Hall, Stoke by Nayland and of Holbecks, Layham. He was educated at Harrow School and commissioned into the 5th Territorial Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment in January 1911. The formation of the Battalion’s “C” company in Hadleigh and the provision of its base at the Drill Hall in George Street in 1912 owned much to the enthusiasm of Joshua Rowley as its company commander. He was mobilised with the 5th Suffolks in August 1914 and served throughout the Battalion’s time at Gallipoli when sixteen of his company were killed on a single day. He was a highly respected and well liked officer and whilst on leave he is known to have personally visited the families of the men lost in action when under his command. In December 1915 he received a Commission as Captain in the Highland Light Infantry, but remained attached to his old Battalion who by then were serving in Egypt with the EEF. The battalion had been involved in the earlier attempts to take Gaza in early 1917. As the third battle for Gaza began in the early hours of 2 November 1917 the artillery barrage lifted and the 5th Suffolks moved forward from their trenches on Fusilier Ridge towards the Turkish strong point of El Arish Redoubt to the south west of Gaza city. Initially it appeared that the Turks had moved back since they were putting up little resistance, but unknown to the Suffolks some snippers had remained and as Captain Rowley led his company forward he was shot and mortally wounded, age 24. He has a known grave at Gaza War Cemetery. The 5th Suffolks went on to take the El Arish Redoubt on 4 November 1917. Meanwhile the 15th Suffolks were some way to the east around Sheria, north of Beersheba which had been taken on 31 October 1917. On 6 November the 15th Suffolks were ordered to clear a strip of country containing various detached Turkish posts. Private Arthur James Chisnall, known as Jack, from Hadleigh was batman to Second Lieutenant William Anthony Wood and he went into action as his officer’s runner. At sunrise they came up against an advanced Turkish position and it was in preparing to rush this that both were killed.

Jack was aged 22. The post was later taken by the rest of “B” company and two days later the enemy were in retreat all along the line. Arthur James Chisnall was born in Hadleigh in 1895 and lived most of his life in Benton Street, probably at number 26 where he was living in 1911. He enlisted into the Suffolk Yeomanry at Woodbridge in October 1914. He went with the Battalion to Gallipoli, arriving on 8 October 1915 part way through the Campaign, but on 11 November 1915 he was admitted to hospital in Mudros on the Greek island of Lemnos suffering from sun stoke. In January 1916 he was back in England and was in hospital in Birmingham. He was released home but while visiting his sister in Ipswich in February he suffered a relapse of dysentery and was removed to the isolation hospital in Foxhall Road. It is not clear what happened next, but by June 1917 he was in Palestine with 15th Suffolks training for the attack at Gaza. He is buried along with others killed the same day in Beersheba War Cemetery. For the rest of November the fighting in Palestine revolved around contests for hills, villages and observation points in conditions where there was a major shortage of drinking water and where the weather turned cold with heavy rain. The strategic objective was Jerusalem, but the commanders had no wish to besiege the city, nor fight anywhere near it, since it was a holy city for Muslims, Jews and Christians. Jerusalem would have to be taken by surrender or retreat.

Great War Tragedy Visits Hadleigh Tragedy on our for doorstep! On Saturday 27 October 1917 whilst engaged on his duties at Hadleigh Aerodrome, 1st Air Mechanic William Laurence Mason, of the Royal Flying Corps, was the unfortunate victim of a dreadful accident. A machine gun on a nearby aeroplane was being unloaded when it accidentally went off. The deceased at that moment stepped off the machine he was engaged on right in front of the gun. The charge went through him. Dr Muriel described the injuries, stating that the charge had entered below the heart. A verdict of "Accidental Death" was returned. 1st A. M. Mason was the fourth son of Mr and Mrs David Mason, of 3, Hookstone Road, Harrogate. He was 33 years of age and left a widow. The funeral cortege left the aerodrome at Hadleigh on Monday 22 October after a very impressive service in the open air conducted by the clergy of Hadleigh. The coffin, covered with the Union Jack, was conveyed to the station on a trailer attached to a motor van of the R.F.C. and was preceded by the whole of the men of the squadron, and followed by one of the officers (Lieut. Neville Smith), who, together with 4 of the deceased comrades, accompanied it to Harrogate. The commander of the squadron (Captain Cook) and another of the officers of the squadron flew two aeroplanes over the procession as a guard of honour all the way to Hadleigh station and remained in the air over the train until it left. On the 27 October 2017 members of the Hadleigh RBL Branch visited the site and laid a wreath in memory of 1st AM William Mason RFC. GREAT WAR NEWS NOVEMBER 1917 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 7 Nov Chief Petty Officer William Isaac Seggar RN who for some years was a gymnasium instructor, visited his old school in Bridge Street upon two occasions last week and put the boys through their Swedish physical exercises. (originally Wm Seggar was from the New Cut, had a naval career that spanned 1899 to 1919 and after the war was landlord at various pubs including the White Horse in stone Street and the Ram.) Wed 7 Nov Sergeant George Emmerson writes from Italy. He has been very busy, “Overtime does not count with the Tommy and only munition workers get paid for that.” Wed 14 Nov “From the Front” formed the subject of an interesting lantern lecture given by Mr E Ringer at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Hadleigh and District War Savings Committee. The Government wanted money to carry on the war. Fifty views of the battle scenes of the Somme were shown. Wed 28 Nov As the lads reach the age of 18 they leave us to join the colours and so the male population is continuously depleted. During the last three weeks there has been quite an exodus from the district.

Dear Sir, I am writing on behalf of Hadleigh Cricket Club to thank WBro. Tim Warner and all the members of Brett Valley Lodge for their very generous support of £638 which has enabled us to make purchases for our Junior Section. We have been able to replace and renew items such as pads, bats and fielding equipment which were a particularly urgent need as our Junior Section has seen considerable growth with over 100 children, both boys and girls, playing cricket at the Club. David Mann, Chairman, Hadleigh Cricket Club

Dear Sir, As the festive period approaches again, Sue and I would like to make another appeal to those of you who could consider a food bank whip round instead of a secret santa or sending christmas cards to people at work this year. We’re not making any suggestions this year, the shelves at the local food banks are pretty empty currently, so we think that they'd be glad of anything. Your kindness and creativity could make such a difference to a local family, as food bank contributions are at an all time low and demand is up 30%. We do realise that many of us are doing our best as it is, and we are not suggesting that anyone go without, or that we aren't doing enough already…..but with local food banks making 70 deliveries a week through the autumn with the expectation that this will rise as heating bills start to arrive, anything that we can spare will go down a treat. As you know, if you can manage to pop an extra tin or packet in your basket you can drop it in the foodbank collection basket at Morrisons or the CoOp, but if you have something at home, or you have collected amongst your friends and can't get down to the collection points, Sue or I can pick your contribution up and take it in for you. Drop us an email and we'll happily pop round. Best wishes to all and to everyone who continues to support their local foodbanks, Sue Monks, sumonks0112@gmail.com Angela Wiltshire, angela.wiltshire@btinternet.com

Dear Sir,

Winter cycling with Hadleigh Cycling Club

Re: Hadleigh – Ipswich 90 Evening service Hadleigh Community Transport Group have been operating this service for many years and up until recently with no incidents. However, over the last two months we have experienced verbal abuse towards our staff and other passengers, refusal to wear seat belts and on two separate occasions the glass in the wing mirror on the bus has been deliberately smashed by a passenger. These incidents have been reported to the police who are currently investigating. The bus is well used by many people of all ages who want to enjoy an evening out in Ipswich or travel home from work and we would like this to continue. We want the journey to be a pleasant one for all passengers and we cannot accept this type of behaviour. It is a legal requirement to wear a seat belt for the safety of all on board and it is not permitted to eat or drink on the vehicle. CCTV has now been installed in the vehicles and individuals not complying will be refused travel Hadleigh Community Transport Group

Dear Sir, I was alarmed to read Mr & Mrs Pechy’s letter regarding the proposed development at Hadleigh Quarry, in October’s Community News. I spoke to SCC Planning Department recently and it seems that when the agents acting for the site operators submitted the planning application in August, they indicated potential truck movements of 40 per day when the figure should have been 40 per week ie. at the currently approved levels. This clarification is now included in the supporting documents shown on the SCC planning website. Sadly, the current use of this site was approved some years ago and there is no realistic chance of reversing that approval, including the current levels of truck movements. If this new application is approved, and I certainly hope that it isn’t, then it is essential that any approval imposes a maximum number of truck movements per week. The agents use the words “circa” and “around”, but in my view an absolute maximum of 40 movements per week (20 in and 20 out) must be imposed. If approved, this application will, no doubt, result in a substantial increase in overall activity at this location. Originally this decision was going to be a “delegated issue” but I understand that it will now be considered at a full SCC Development & Regulation Committee meeting on 12th December. Let us hope that it will be rejected by our elected representatives who will, no doubt, have read all the objections submitted via the SCC website. Even if this new application is rejected it will, unfortunately, still leave the statusquo and therefore, the current unacceptable pressure on the Aldham Mill Road/A1071 junction will remain. Realistically, there is little chance of funds being made available to improve this junction or the equally dangerous junction at Gallows Hill/Stone Street in the near future. The immediate introduction of a 40 mph speed limit on the whole length of the Hadleigh by-pass would at least go some way to improve safety at these junctions. I only hope that our local County & District councillors are pursuing the speed limit issue with some urgency. Alan Morgan

Whilst it is tempting to put the bike in the shed, it can be fun and exhilarating to ride over the winter. HCC cyclists will be out and about weather permitting. Here are a few handy tips: 1 Make sure you’ve got a decent windproof jacket and gloves. 2 Check the weather forecast, you may not need waterproofs. 3 You’ll need a set of lights if you’re out after 4pm. Don’t buy the cheapest. 4 Mudguards are handy if you’re riding in a group or off road. 5 There are tyres which are virtually puncture-proof and they are definitely worth the investment. 6 Get your bike serviced. The Club has been supported by Sunny Day Cycleworks and The Pedal House and we would recommend them. Finally, protect yourself at all times. Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 9am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Dear Sir, To date the councils cost saving exercise looks like this: £24,000 to consultants who recommended, in the interest of cost saving, to operate Mid Suffolk and Babergh Councils from Corks Lane. The Council have chosen the least cost effective option, moving to Endeavour House. Agents fees to value Corks Lane and Needham office properties £12,000. Estimate for drawings to achieve some change of use for offices £420,000. Future travelling costs to be announced. And now to add insult to injury the thinking appears to be to ignore the referendum of 2011 when the residents in Babergh voted not to merge with Mid Suffolk. Localism sure is working. Just saying. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 21st September 2017 Present: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Haylock, Monks, Shearly-Sanders, Whiting, Wilson, Wiltshire and Young. In attendance: Babergh District Councillors Dr. Dawson and Grandon and 23 members of the public. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors Fraser, Haines, Matthews and Sheldrick. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interest. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 17th August 2017 were taken as read subject to changing the wording on page 22 in the paragraph requesting mediation ‘language used’ changed to ‘ conflicts of opinion’ were confirmed and signed. MATTERS ARISING Sports & Open Spaces Committee - Councillor Young asked for clarification that until confirmation was received from Babergh District Council that no further planning permission was required no action on the cemetery extension would be taken. She was advised that this was the case. Councillor Wiltshire asked if the request for mediation could be progressed. The Clerk advised that she felt a tri-partied mediation was needed so SALC (Suffolk Association of Local Councils), LCPAS (Local Council Public Advisory Service) and Mr. Charvonia (Chief Executive of Babergh District Council) had been contacted. All have said they would be willing to take part in the mediation process. SALC would make a charge and were not willing to work with LCPAS; LCPAS and Mr. Charvonia would be happy to work together. Councillor Shearly-Sanders stated that the felt that the advice LCPAS have given to the Town Clerk in the past and especially over the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group has been wrong and did not have any confidence in LCPAS. Councillor Wiltshire advised that she had not requested a tri-partied mediation and agreed that this could not be done to us and it will be a decision taken by Councillors. Councillor Monks stated that in order for mediation to work there has to be a willingness of all those involved. At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to speak on the septic tank at Layham Road Sports Ground; Babergh District Council moving out of the offices on Corks Lane; parking in the town and the Neighbourhood Plan POLICE The Clerk reported an e.mail received advising that Suffolk Constabulary is currently operating a Community Impact Assessment following recent terrorist attacks. Councillor Dr. Dawson provided a verbal report in which she advised that she had an ‘open door’ policy should any residents which to raise their concerns with her directly; she felt Hadleigh Town Council should be seen to be using local businesses; concerns as to why Babergh District Council cancelled their last meeting due to a lack of business when the move from Hadleigh to Ipswich is imminent; she advised that staff would be receiving £500 to assist with moving costs. Councillor Grandon had provided a written report and advised that she was in discussion with parties concerned over the change in the bus timetable. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £34,140.41 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Councillor Wilson questioned the payment made for the new carpet on the stairs leading to the Council Chamber as he felt this should have been paid by the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. The Clerk advised that this payment was covered by being in the part of the building used by Hadleigh Town Council. Councillor Shearly-Sanders disagreed with the Clerk’s explanation and went on to provide members of the public with his view of the history between Hadleigh Town Council and Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. Councillor Byrne advised that this situation had been in place for the past thirty years and set up by a body of solicitors. Councillor Shearly-Sanders felt that two of the payments were unlawful and would be discussing these with the Finance Officer. Voting on the Schedule of Payments was: 6 for, 2 against, 2 abstentions. The Schedule of Payment was passed for payment. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 17th August 2017 and 14th September 2017 were noted. SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 7th September 2017 was received and accepted including the recommendation to increase Allotment Rent in September 2018. HADLEIGH ENTERTAINMENTS FORUM In the absence of the Chair of the Forum, Councillor Sheldrick, Councillor Young as Secretary of the Forum provided a verbal report. She advised that everything is on track for a Christmas Event. BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCIL – FUTURE OF CORKS LANE BUILDING Councillor Cook nominated the Mayor to attend the ‘sounding board’ project group meetings to be held by Babergh District Council. This was seconded by Councillor Monks and voting was unanimous. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN WORKING GROUP Councillor Shearly-Sanders raised a point of order as he is still of the opinion that the Town Clerk does not have the power to suspend the Working Group. At the last Town Council meeting the Clerk gave her answer to the question of suspending the working party and referred to statutory provision which enables the Town Council to delegate certain decisions including the Clerk. Councillor Shearly-Sanders view was that the Town Council had not delegated to the Clerk the powers to suspend the Working Group. He had provided a legal briefing paper explaining what the present systems of the working party are. The Clerk provided a statement in reply: Circumstances led me to believe that the Council was being brought into disrepute. As a result I took the action I did as Responsible Officer until I could verify the allegations. I cannot say anymore as the allegations were made in confidence. At a meeting with Mr. Charvonia, Chief Executive Officer of Babergh District Council, he endorsed my actions in this case. Councillor Wilson felt this explanation was not good enough and still wanted to know on what authority the Town Clerk had suspended the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group. Councillor Cook felt that if the Clerk had received information confidentially then obviously the Council could not be informed. She felt the Town Clerk had acted responsibly in making a judgement that was in the best interest of the Town Council and as her action had been endorsed by Mr. Charvonia, Chief Executive Officer of Babergh District Council, then as Responsible Officer the Town Clerk had acted appropriately. The Neighbourhood Plan Working Group had not been disbanded, merely suspended and now that questions had been answered it was time to move on and there was no point in going round in circles. Councillor Shearly-Sanders did not accept that the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group was suspended. The general consensus of opinion was that this was one of the issues where there was a breakdown in communication and until mediation had taken place no way forward could be seen. Instead of moving forward with the reinstatement of this group which was only suspended and not disbanded the discussion just kept going round and round in circles getting nowhere. Councillor Byrne proposed that the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group be held in abeyance until mediation could be arranged. The Town Clerk advised that this could not be progressed until Councillors agreed on how they wished to proceed. At this point the Mayor adjourned the meeting to collect her thoughts. On her return the Mayor advised that to move forward there were four options available for mediation: 1) SALC there will be a cost incurred and Councillors have to abide by their report 2) LCPAS mediation is covered by the annual subscription paid to the Society 3) Mr Arthur Charvonia and LCPAS, Chief Executive Officer of Babergh District Council working with LCPAS

4) Mr. Arthur Charvonia, Chief Executive Officer of Babergh District Council Councillor Byrne proposed option 4 as there were certain Councillors who were unhappy with using LCPAS. Councillor Cook seconded this. Voting was unanimous to use Mr. Arthur Charvonia of Babergh District Council if he is in agreement. At this point the Mayor suspended the meeting at 8.45pm – no further business took place. Mrs Carol A. The document is available to view on Babergh District Council’s website or a hard copy is available in the office. The consultation is inter-active online. There is an open day on the document in Hadleigh on the 11th October and members were asked to attend this event. All comments can then be received at the Planning Committee on the 12th October for submission before the closing date. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Cook raised how future Planning Meetings would be held. It was felt that this meeting had worked well, receiving the documentation weekly by e.mail was more helpful for members and Babergh District Council had provided plans when requested. The Chair advised members to make their requests to the Clerk should they feel hard copies of the plans would be useful. It was agreed to continue using the same format as this meeting. It was felt that Babergh District Council’s Planning Portal should be much more efficient than it actually is. The Clerk was asked to bring this to the attention of Lee Parker, Cabinet Member for Planning. There being no further business the meeting closed at 9.05pm. Mrs Carol A. Do you run a Layham-based business?

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org. However, if you do not have access to a computer and would like a hard copy of the 'Welcome to Layham' booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk 07920 713940. Parish Council The main points discussed at the council meeting of 27 September were: Two parishioners present expressed concern about car parking around the allotments, on the bend. New residents were made aware that they were not allowed to park there; however, one of the parked cars was known to belong to a long term resident. The parishioners asked the PC to write to all residents informing them that the area was a right of way, NOT a parking area. They were also concerned about dogs being loose on the allotments. These issues would be discussed by councillors at their next meeting. • Babergh District Council report In response to a question about the income from market stalls, the Clerk would ask Cllr Ward, who was not present at the meeting, whether this went to Babergh or the organisers of the market. With regard to the stand for a defibrillator on Brett Green, the Cabinet Member for Planning was trying to clarify the position regarding planning permission. The dispute with the union concerning Babergh’s relocation to Endeavour House had now been settled and staff would be offered heavily subsidised Park & Ride from both Copdock and Martlesham for the next three years. • County Council report A paper had been presented to Cabinet recommending going out to consultation to amend the home to school transport provision to the statutory minimum. Cllr Jones said automatic number plate recognition cameras were currently being tested in Halesworth and would be rolled out across the county in due course; a report would be published in December/early 2018. The police had agreed that civilians could be trained to process the data. GJ said he believed this would be a better solution than mobile speed signs. • CPR training Dr Simon Daunt and Charlie Panting had delivered the training to six members of the PCC and had confirmed that they would be happy to deliver more sessions. Cllr Laing said he would organise the next one in the Queen’s Head. • Emergency Plan A training session for the Emergency Link Volunteers had been held on 11 September, and a new questionnaire distributed to all parishioners. It was noted that some new houses had been built in the village since the original distribution list had been compiled, and some new volunteers would need to be recruited. • Green Team A working party would build an insect hotel in the conservation area of the playing field on Saturday 11 November. • War Memorial/Remembrance Day Neil Luxton had once again offered to clean the War Memorial free of charge, despite having moved away from the village. It was agreed that the PC should purchase a wreath for Remembrance Day; Cllr Sillett agreed to lay it. • Pumping station in Water Lane, Upper Layham The Clerk had contacted Anglian Water to report that routine maintenance work was needed on the shrubs and trees surrounding the pumping station in Water Lane; she had received confirmation that the work would be carried out shortly.

Donation towards the installation of a fourth defibrillator The Parish Council is slowly working towards the provision of a fourth defibrillator – in Brett Green. This is a more costly exercise than those installed so far as there is not a ready electrical supply and a purpose-built stand will need to be provided. Parish councillors are grateful to Hadleigh Thrift Shop for a donation of £200 towards this project. We hope to attract further donations in the coming months. Helping Hand for a Hedgehog Last month a sick Hedgehog was found at Layham playing field but help was at hand. Tanith Laing from the Queens Head was asked to assist. She has helped Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog rescue based at Stonham in the past to rehabilitate ‘Hogs’ before them being released back into the wild. On this occasion she called on the assistance of Wildlives Rescue at Thorrington who were able to take in the sick ‘Hog’ immediately. The good news is he has made a full recovery and along with another Hedgehog from the rescue centre they have asked Tanith to take, will be back in the wild very soon. At this time of year it's very important to check under bonfires before lighting as piles of leaves and wood are ideal nesting places for Hedgehogs. Steve Laing

Venus Is visible in the early morning sky and appears close to the planet Jupiter on November 13th. They will appear very close together in the predawn sky. Mars Is moving through the constellation of Virgo in the morning sky and its blood-red colour gives it away easily. The Moon will be close to the planet on November 15th. Taurus The Bull The constellation Taurus is high in the evening sky and is one of the more interesting Zodiac constellations. The brightest star of the sign is Aldebaran, a stunning orange giant star that is located 65 light years from the Sun and is the fourteenth brightest star in the entire sky. It is some 44 times the size of our star and 518 times more luminous. The Pleiades, or Seven Sisters, star cluster lies at the head of the constellation. This is a truly stunning collection of sibling stars that will out stand you in a small pair of binoculars and the view through a small telescope will take your breath away. These blue stars are incredibly hot with surface temperatures of 20,000 degrees or so ( Our Sun is only 5,500 degrees). They are also very young in cosmic terms at 'just' 100 million years old. Next I would like you to notice the distinct V shape of stars surrounding Aldebaran, this is the Hyades star cluster. These stars, unlike the Pleiades, are more spread out and you will notice the different colour. This is because these stars are 625 million years old and burning much like our Sun. They lie at a distance of 153 light years away and they have a combined mass of 400 Suns. At the western end of the constellation lies the object known officially as M1 and more commonly known as The Crab Nebula. M1 is in actual fact a supernova remnant ( the remains of a star that exploded in 1054 ). It is located at a distance of 6,500 light years and is also the site of the last supernova to explode within the Milky Way. An exciting constellation and now with Winter around the corner, it will get better.

Hadleigh U3A The next meeting of the Hadleigh U3A will be at 2.30pm on Monday 13th November 2017 in the Ansell Community Centre, Hadleigh where the subject of a talk entitled ‘Lady Town Crier’ will be given by Brenda Willison. All members and prospective members are welcome.

Pause For Thought "Dreams are inspiring. Not the dreams which are the product of too much spicy food, but the kind of dreams which paint a picture of what the future should be like, can be like and ultimately must be like. These dreams have the power to change the lives and nations for the better. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr shared his dream as he addressed a crowd with a powerful speech. He passionately declared that he longed for a day when parts of his homeland, which had been strongholds of racial prejudice, inequality and division would become, in his words, transformed into an oasis of freedom, where people would not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. His dream was not, and perhaps is still not, a reality. Ultimately, he would die for his dream, and yet his powerful words still inspire today. Martin Luther King Jr’s speech grew out of his faith. So he quoted the bible where it speaks of God’s dream for the world to be full of justice and peace. His dream was inspired by God’s dream. Jesus Christ makes that dream reality, one day he said, “Come to me, all you who are wearied and burdened and I will give you rest. He wants to change life from being burdensome to joy. Jesus also died for his dream, but he would die to make his dream a reality. It’s a dream worth looking into." Pastor Chris Todd

Hadleigh United Under-11s report Hadleigh United Under-11s's hard work over the summer in learning about the offside rule and training more generally has certainly paid off. We've won three of our four opening games this season and throughout have shown discipline and tactical nous. We lost our first game against a driven Coplestonians team, but bounced back to empathically beat Boxford Rovers before dispatching Stowmarket Salvation Army even more ruthlessly in round one of the cup and then a tough and organised Whitton United outfit by a slightly tighter margin. All the lads have played their part to the full, as have their parents who have all contributed their skills on one way or another. Remember, if any Year 6 boy or girl is interested in joining our squad, please get their parents/carers to contact me on nelsonpkay@hotmail.com Neil Williams

The Hadleigh Brettsiders have had quite a baptism of fire this season, playing three teams from higher divisions in their first four games. Although they lost each time they didn’t give up. Since then, they’ve turned in a great comeback against Eye Saints (from the same division) and a second victory against Ipswich Athletic, which saw another comeback. The Brettsiders have a great team spirit and are well supported by family and friends at training and on match days. If any Year 6 boys or girls are interested in finding out more about training/playing, then can their parents/carers please contact me as follows: Mobile: 07841 131718 or Email: gazza.gooner99@btinternet.com Gary Morris Please note: Training for both teams takes place on Wednesday evenings on the astro pitch behind Hadleigh High School from 18:00 to 19:00. Home matches are played on Saturday mornings behind Hadleigh High School.

The winners were Mick and Maria Barrand, Jamie Leeks and Roz Jenkins. Thanks to Ray and Jan Austin for making it all happen. A Busy End of Season for Hadleigh Tennis Club The end of the summer season has been busy and enjoyable for the Club with the Ladies’ Doubles Tournament, the annual memorial match with Bildeston and President’s Day. The Ladies’ Doubles is always a hard fought competitive event and this year on the newly painted courts was no different. Congratulations to Carol McLeod and Haley Thorpe who won the tournament with Dominica Yannaghas and Gill Wilson the runners up. The Club can trace its routes back to 1881 when a match was played against the gentlemen of Bildeston. These days we commemorate that match by playing an annual tournament with Bildeston followed by refreshments. This year Bildeston won the Gentlemen’s Doubles cup by 3 sets to 1. The Ladies’ Doubles plate went to Hadleigh 4-0. Each year the Club’s President Peter Richards organises the President’s Day competition, a fun event followed by lunch in the clubhouse. The format and rules of the games are “adjusted” to level the playing field and heighten the tension! Even the drizzly weather could not dampen our spirits and by the end of the morning there emerged a four-way tie for the lead amongst the ladies that was resolved by playing a champions tiebreak confirming Eunice Scott as the winner. In the gentlemen’s competition Luke McGee was victorious. The Club Play sessions during British Summer Time are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. The Club Play continues in winter on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings. There are 3 floodlit all weather courts located at Layham Road playing fields next to the Rugby Club. We are always pleased to welcome new faces and you can play a few sessions to see how you get on before deciding whether or not to join. If you would like details of membership please email hadleightennis@gmail.com, or text our Secretary, Bryan Walls on 07714 484842

Elliot Gladwell, a long-time member of Hadleigh Swimming Club has every reason to be happy with his recent performances in the Biathle-Triathle World Championships held in Viveiro, northern Spain. Elliot (pictured with one of his medals) was selected to represent Great Britain following his convincing win in the selection competition held at Salford Quays in July. Biathle events are a sub-sport of the modern pentathlon and consist of a continuous run – swim –run, which in Elliot’s case was 400m – 50m – 400m. He came home following 5 days in Spain with 3 gold medals in the U13 age category – Individual, Team and Mixed Relay. We’re all very proud of you, Elliot.

Meanwhile, back at the club, 36 of our swimmers recently completed a training session at the London Aquatic Centre, where the 2012 Olympic Games and European Championships were held. It was great to see swimmers from all sections having fun together. The facilities were superb and although the experience of swimming in a 50-metre pool was tiring, we all agreed it was a fantastic day. Hadleigh swimmers have continued to put in strong performances at open meets across the county with coaching and teaching now focused on our annual Club Championships – a fun and friendly chance to beat personal times, win medals and break club records. Finally, may we thank everyone who supported us with their green Co-op tokens and by sponsoring races in our family frog racing night. Brett Valley Young Farmers, MBA Flue Services LTD, Gladwell’s Pet and Country Store, HH Craske and Son farms, Plant Parts and Gill Knight & family all contributed generously and boosted our total for the evening. Those of you who attended the evening or gave your time are also greatly appreciated. Your support means that we can fund training for new and existing teachers and coaches – thank you, again.

The Junior Club has grown rapidly in numbers, we now have 16 girls signed on as Team Players and a few girls as Training Players, we have enough girls to enter two year 7 teams into the Colchester League in November which the girls are very excited about! On 11th October we hosted two friendly matches during our training sessions, Wattisham Blades Netball Club came over to Hadleigh to play against out Junior girls. It was great experience for the girls and Cosmic Rockets only lost by 2 goals! We had a hot drinks stand which was very popular with the parents and we hope to host friendly matches once a month. Well done to our Trainee Assistant Coach and Beginner Umpire, Luciana, who has recently completed her online Safeguarding Course and also umpired at the B2N festival. Thank you Luciana for representing the club so well at the Festival. There is so much talk about money on the news whether it be on how much it is going to cost for us to exit the European Union. How much our young people are getting into debt by going to university or for others, low wages, high rents and everyday living is sending them spiralling into the red. As a nation we are generous in giving to worthy causes not only with money but also with time. All these things play on people's minds causing them to feel very down and out of sorts. We cannot wave a magic wand and wipe out their debt but we can listen to their problems. Talking helps and our qualified registered healers are there for you. Please telephone 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org and we will listen.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Big news from the Millfield recently is Stuart Alston standing down as first team manager to oversee the youth development of the club. In his last match in charge as Boss, Alston’s team gave a splendid performance to beat Haverhill Rovers by two goals at the Millfield. In the F.A Vase Hadleigh were beaten by Sawbridgeworth with the last kick of the game after extra time. Other games in recent weeks have seen three first team matches lost by the odd goal. In contrast a heavy defeat was given by Stowmarket in a night match under the Millfield floodlights by five goals to one. The Reserves were beaten heavily at Witham but some splendid wins were also achieved by Andy Lambert’s side. Ipswich Wanderers Reserves were beaten by three goals in a league match while Waveney were thrashed by four goals in the Suffolk Cup. A one goal win was achieved at Stowmarket with another splendid display. The Veterans scored a dozen goals in a remarkable match against Phoenix with Ben Goodchild scoring six of them. Our Youth team suffered odd goal defeats against Framlingham, Ipswich Wanderers and Woodbridge but we lost heavily at Cambridge City Youths in the F.A Youth Cup by seven goals to nil. But our boys tried their best against a strong side. Prizewinners in the Latest draw were Rolf Beggerow and Phil Crawford. Ground Improvement winner was Toppesfield. Draws were made by Elsie Lewis.

Hadleigh Table Tennis Club Hadleigh “A” Team playing in Division 2 of the Ipswich League have made an encouraging start in their attempt to regain Division 1 status by winning the first three games of the current season winning 24 sets out of the 30 played. They proudly stand in first spot out of 10 teams but still have some challenging matches ahead of them. Both Mike Emmerson and Rex Manning top the “averages” each having eight wins and one loss. New recruit 13 year old Daniel Young has started well winning all three games in his first match. Captain Peter Wright has made his usual steady start. Hadleigh “Owls” have already played five games in Division 3 winning 21 sets of the 50 played and lying in 4th position. A recent 8-2 win against Trimley “B” saw a maximum from Krystoff Kopec with two each from both Tony Hilton and Captain Rupert Pyett. Krystoff has made an excellent start to the season winning 13 of his 15 games played. Both teams have entered in the League’s Handicap Knockout Competition and the draw will be made shortly. The Club is still on the lookout for anyone who would like to try his/her hand at League play. Please contact Ken Rodwell, Secretary, on 01473 823895, for details.
