Market goes from strength to strength The future of Hadleigh’s weekly market now looks much brighter after a year of successful new management which has seen a rise in the number of new traders. In 2016, Babergh undertook an engagement exercise on the future of Hadleigh Market which had been in decline for a few years. However, feedback received from local people last year, revealed a great deal of support for the Market and a desire to see more diversity on offer from traders including baked and artisan goods, specialty cheeses and seasonal offers to support and compliment the High Street shops. To help revive the market and fulfil the wishes of local people, Babergh teamed up with award winning local company, Suffolk Market Events and in just over a year, Hadleigh Market now boasts 8 regular stalls and additional ones that come on an occasional basis. The response to the new market has been so positive agreement has been reached between Babergh and Suffolk Market Events to extend the partnership for another two years. Justine Paul, Owner of Suffolk Market Events said, “I am absolutely delighted to be continuing my work with Babergh and Hadleigh market. Over the last twelve months significant improvements have been achieved at the town’s weekly market. The market now has a consistent number of top quality stalls serving the people of Hadleigh with a brilliant range of products but there is more than can be done and over the next two years, with the continued support of Babergh, we will strive to achieve even better things for the market.” Cllr John Ward, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development said, “I am very pleased that Suffolk Market Events will continue to manage Hadleigh Market for the next two years. They have done an excellent job to increase the numbers of regular and occasional traders. Hadleigh is a growing town and deserves a flourishing market as an additional attraction to what is an excellent shopping experience.” Hadleigh Market is held every Friday morning between 8am and 2pm on the Market Place, just off the High Street. For further information about the market or to enquire about having a stall at the market, please contact Justine Paul at justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk or call 07704 627973. Maggi Hambling returns to Hadleigh Artist, sculptor and one time resident, Maggi Hambling, made a welcome return to Hadleigh to take part in the Festival of Gardening and Art which celebrated the life and work of Sir Cedric Morris. As Maggi had been a student at Sir Cedric’s school of painting at Benton End in the 60’s she was the obvious choice to come and speak about the man, his centre of art and his influence on her own work. Happily for the Festival organisers she kindly agreed to return. Speaking before a full audience in the Guildroom, Jonathan Benson, associate director at auctioneers’ Reeman and Dansie, posed the questions and then let Maggi Jonathan Benson and Maggi Hambling entertain with anecdotes and illustrations of life at this avant garde centre of art and gardening. As feisty and forthright as ever her stories were much enjoyed and well received. Maggi’s talk was the last item on the Festival programme before the grand finale at St Mary’s. Since its launch at the Hadleigh Show there has been a variety of themed events on offer including creative workshops, a magical picnic, guided walks, a ‘local’ gardeners’ question time, competitions, a film, concert and more. The grand finale reflected Sir Cedric’s love of art, gardening and sense of fun with an art and textile exhibition and an amazing display of over 100 decorated bras to raise money for Cancer Awareness UK. Festival organisers, Jane Haylock, Jane Snowdon and Jan Devey wish to say a big thank you to all who supported the Festival in so many different ways.

If you fancy a change from the usual stress over the Christmas period, why not come and find out what happens at The Christmas Present Trust? We offer a free traditional meal and entertainment on Christmas Day for those who, for whatever reason, are unable to be with family and friends. We are holding an open evening on Tuesday 17th October starting at 7pm in the upstairs room at The George pub, Hadleigh, where we hope you will join us for an informal chat and free nibbles. You don’t necessarily have to be available on Christmas Day to be of great value to our event. If you can spare at least a couple of hours on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day, we would love to talk to you about the various opportunities to be part of this celebratory event, now in its third year. The TSB have now launched their community outreach in support of The Christmas Present Trust, and we are also extremely grateful to The Co-op who have given us a very generous donation towards the food we offer. This year, we are aiming to reach a wider network of both guests and volunteers and we are likely to be catering for a potential 100 guests on Christmas Day. At the open evening, we welcome past volunteers who might like to share their experiences with those who are curious to find out more. And as if free nibbles wasn’t enough of an incentive, we are also bringing the vast quantity of books left from our very successful Bank Holiday Book sale for those who might have missed them first time around. If you cannot be there but would like to volunteer, or just want to find out more, please contact Simon and Sarah Thompson at hadleighsimon@gmail.com or on 01473 829246. Remember the date and venue: Tuesday 17th October upstairs at The George

We did it! Over 300 miles cycled, plenty of carbs consumed, wrong-turns taken, punctures repaired and most importantly, almost £8,000 raised (and still counting) for an incredible cause. From just three friends buying road bikes and setting ourselves a challenge, we managed to raise a significant sum of money for the Ipswich Hospital Charity, which will benefit so many people, and for that we are so very grateful to everyone who reached into their pockets, gave up their time or helped in any way. Whilst the ride was tough at times and we felt pain in our legs like nothing before, it pales into insignificance when compared to the generosity shown by so many people along the way. 5-a-side football tournament In June this year we organised a 5-a-side football fundraiser at Hadleigh United Football Club, hoping to boost our sponsorship activities. What we thought would be just a few teams of friends and family became a 15 team strong competition, BBQ, raffle, bar and all round family day out, with what seemed to be half of Hadleigh attending. (A pretty daunting prospect for three lads who barely manage to organise what they’re going to do of a weekend!) Fortunately, our friends and family came to the rescue and between us we pulled off a successful and rewarding day. Thank you so much to the teams that competed and to their friends and families for coming along to support. A massive thank you has to go to Hadleigh United Football Club for supporting us all the way through; allowing us to use their pitches and equipment free of charge, providing referees and also for their hugely generous donation of the bar takings from the day, amounting to £330. Another big fundraiser on the day was the BBQ, of which all the meat was donated by Andrews Butchers. Without this, we wouldn’t have been able to raise anywhere near as much as we did, so a special thank you goes to the team at Andrews Butchers. Last but certainly not least, a big thank you to all the local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle. The raffle was a hugely significant part of the day and it wouldn’t have been so successful without such great prizes. So in no particular order, thank you to: Sweet Memories, Angel Delights, Petit Paris, Adnams Cellar and Kitchen, Hadleigh Fast Food, The Ram, The George, James Daniels, Faithfuls, Ferguson’s Delicatessen, D’enza, Hadleigh Pet Supplies, WJ Green Ltd, Jim Lawrence and R Clarke Welding Services. All of this, combined with the contribution from the football club, resulted in a final figure of £2,472 raised. We really couldn’t have done it without everyone that helped - thank you so much. The Ride Day 1 started at 6am on a crisp morning in Crystal Palace. We were joined by over 100 other cyclists all raising money for their chosen charities. We’d like

to say we were off to a flying start, but with two punctures within the first 8 miles and a wrong turn around the 20 mile point, it’s fair to say it didn’t begin quite as planned. Were we in too deep? Probably. Did we ever think about giving up? Absolutely not. We made it through the rest of the first day unscathed, making up the time lost from punctures to enjoy a couple of pints in Dover before hopping on the ferry. Just like that day 1 was complete, 99 miles on the saddle and all feeling optimistic about the task ahead. Day 2 began in a cold and windy Calais, although I think it’s fair to say we were all quite surprised about how fresh we still felt. Taking advantage of this, we started strongly, passing the eager cyclists who set off before us. Unfortunately before long, an old knee pain set us back a little. Luckily, it was nothing a few painkillers, deep heat and some intensive stretching couldn’t solve (or at least mask), which became a characterising routine of the trip. After a hilly ride down the coast, we finished the day strong in the town of Abbeville with another 78 miles on the saddle and the reassurance that the miles were decreasing. This security we felt at the end of day 2 was quickly washed away with a very tough start to day 3. With some of the steepest hills we’ve ever cycled and increasingly sore legs from the days before, the morning section really took its toll. Collectively this was the hardest part of the trip and we were building a strong love/hate relationship with the beautiful French countryside. But as the donations kept flooding in from home and with only a day left after this, we gritted our teeth, clenched our buttocks and got on with it. After another 68 miles completed and to rub salt in the wounds, a puncture in the rain finished the day off. The Vin Rouge tasted especially sweet that evening at our stop in Beauvais! Theoretically, day 4, whilst being the shortest, should have been the hardest day with a build of lactic acid from the previous days. However, we were having none of that, peddling hard through the morning at the best pace we’d had the entire trip. Feeling pretty smug about this, we took full advantage of powering on through, enjoying every minute and soaking up the open French roads en route to Paris. After the final stop for lunch just outside the city, the cyclists were all grouped together for a ride along the River Seine and then the home straight, around the chaotic Arc de Triomphe before finally arriving at the base of the picturesque Eiffel Tower. We were warmly greeted by our families and partners, and after 55 miles on day 4 and 300 in total, we were extremely happy to enjoy the excitement and sense of achievement with our loved ones. The feeling of completing the ride was incredible; we were happy for it to be over but enjoyed every minute. That feeling, however, was nothing compared to how grateful we are to each and every person who donated and helped us along the way. Thank you so much. The money you have donated will help so many people through the Ipswich Hospital Charity. Finally, if anyone still wants to donate, we are currently very close to reaching the £8,000 mark and we’d love to pass that milestone. To donate, please follow the link below: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/stephen-mayes

After the summer break, the choir are enjoying rehearsing again and we are excited to welcome our new Musical Director, Sarah Gallop. Here the publicity officer Julia caught up with her to find out a bit more about her: J: Sarah, I know you’re very busy because it was hard to find a time to meet up with you. What do you get up to when you’re not working with us? S: When it comes to jobs, I have many hats! I have two admin jobs, I also teach singing in a school, as well as giving singing, piano and music theory lessons privately. I am currently singing as part of a trio, with a clarinettist and pianist, and I am also studying for two operas Die Schöne Galatea and Carmen. J: Wow, music is obviously very important to you – what’s your earliest musical memory? S: I absolutely love music; I have always loved performing. I think my earliest memory is performing "every time I lay an egg I think of you" in a primary school performance. If you don't know the song, I strongly suggest you look it up; it's a treat! J: With all those musical hats, why do you want to work with a choir and was there anything particular about Hadleigh Community Choir? S: What's so great about working with a choir is we can create together. I particularly like the choir's inclusive attitude, as well as the broad spectrum of music that you already perform. J: What do you think you’ll bring to the choir? S: I really want to build on those aspects of the choir. I am hoping to bring the ability to look at the music from a performer's perspective. When you sing, it's about your connection with the music as well as how you convey that to the listener. Some of it can be achieved through technique, but it's a balancing act. I want you all to enjoy yourselves as well as push yourselves to achieve the next level. There is always something that each of us can work on, no matter how well we think we know a piece. J: Have you got any plans for things to do with us – different kinds of performances or musical adventures? S: I do have plans for the choir after we've had a few more rehearsals together, but I'm not telling! J: Hmm very tantalising! What kind of music do you enjoy singing yourself? S: I have recently been exploring some coloratura opera arias, so the really high/explosive fireworks stuff. There are some very exciting roles to be found, but I equally enjoy lieder/chanson/art songs. I am also a huge rock 'n' roll fan, and a metalhead, so there's not much in the music world that I don't enjoy. I'm not exactly a singer in these last genres though! J: Thanks Sarah, I'm looking forward to working with you even more now! For those who already know the choir and want to know what has happened to Simon, he can now be found in the men’s section, enjoying his first love – singing! Despite a number of new members recently, the choir is still open to newcomers in all sections. We meet on a Thursday evening 7.30-9.30pm at the United Reform Church. There are no auditions and you don't need to be able to read music. Come for a free try out! Fidelis Activity News The Big Bouquet: The Fidelis contribution to the Festival of Gardening and Art finale “The Big Bouquet was a wall hanging of the same name. Following a morning workshop and some homework, members created a variety of Suffolk puffs from unwanted floral material. These were then attached to an appropriate remnant from upholsterer Les Hymas, to create a large bouquet of blooms. Several bras from local charity shops were revamped for the Bra Ha Ha – An Uplifting Exhibition in aid of Cancer Awareness UK. All in all a worthy re-cycling exercise with a delightful wall hanging for posterity. Life in Our Schools: If teachers need humour in order to survive then it’s no wonder that our last speaker, Brian Carline, was in the profession for over thirty years. His talent for seeing the funny side of life in school and then successfully relating his experiences to his audience was remarkable. Members thoroughly enjoyed his, often touching, anecdotes about his pupils, staff and sometimes himself. It was obvious that Brian was passionate about his work, sensitive to the needs of his students and colleague but still able to infuse his long career with humour. Brian Carline There was a record turnout for this truly and Lin Slaughter entertaining evening. JD
The Long Bessels Light Up Following on from the resounding success of last years event, we have decided to organise another event this year, taking place on Saturday 25th November. This year, the road closure will be bigger, enabling us to incorporate more stalls and activities. Are you a local crafter who would like to show and sell your products? Or provide some food and drinks for the event? If so, please contact either Alice on 07841631658 or Steph on 07769510502. If anyone or any local businesses would like to make a donation, by donating a raffle prize or a monetary donation, these will be gratefully received and can be arranged by contacting Alice and Steph again. Onto sponsorship, we would also like to find sponsors for the event to cover the costs of the light up night. In particular, we would ideally like to find 2 main sponsors, of which we will advertise your company for the duration of the light display. This is done by a banner (provided by the company) for everyone to see. Every single sponsor/donator is named on our main sponsor list and regularly updated throughout the duration of the light display. If you are interested in being a sponsor or backer of the event then please contact Kieron on 07512 340675 or Mark on 07766 140624. Entertainment - we aim to give our local performers a chance to shine and show their local talent off. Are you a performer and would like to sing/dance/play an instrument, if so please contact Trev Clarke. Do you have a local charity or good cause that you would like us to consider raising money for this year? If so, then please write to Kieron and Alice, 17 Long Bessels, Hadleigh or email kruddy1983@hotmail.com or a.munson2012@btinternet.com telling us what you do etc, why you wish us to support you and how monies raised can help you. We end by thanking each and every person that helped, sponsored, donated, attended etc last year. You helped us raise an amazing amount of just over ÂŁ2000 which was split between H.A.D.S and PlayStation Pre-School. Please find us on Facebook - search K&A light display We look forward to welcoming you again this year!

Thank You Thank You to everybody who answered our plea for help in the July Newsletter and voted for the Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding to receive a grant from the Masonic Charitable Foundation. As a result, our charity received the greatest number of votes and is therefore being awarded the maximum grant of £25,000! This is an amazing amount of money which will now enable us to get several much-needed projects underway so that we can continue to benefit the health and wellbeing of adults and children with disabilities through riding therapies. A huge thank you from the riders, volunteers and ponies to everybody who voted for us - we genuinely could not have achieved this without your support - THANK YOU!

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson Here’s one for half-term. This is a Biscuiteers recipe and it is pure magic! Easy Vanilla Biscuits - Makes 24-30 350g plain flour, 100g self-raising flour, 25g granulated sugar 125g salted butter softened, diced, 125g golden syrup 1 teaspoon of vanilla bean paste or extract, large egg lightly beaten Method 1. Sift the flours together into a mixing bowl, add the sugar and mix well. 2. Add the butter. Using just the tips of your fingers, rub the ingredients together until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. 3. When all the butter is evenly mixed in, make a well in the centre and add the syrup, the egg and the vanilla paste or extract. 4. Mix well, drawing in any flour left at the side of the bowl, and stop when a ball has formed. 5. Roll out the pastry to ½ inch thickness. Use cutters of choice to make the biscuits. 6. Bake in the oven for 15-25 minutes depending on the size of your biscuits at 170°C, or until golden brown.

We are also very excited as once again there will be some fun activities happening during October half term when we hold our annual Holloween Festival from Friday 20th October until Sunday 29th October. This year’s event is themed around Grog the friendly alien. There’s going to be lots of fun going on as you discover the adventures Grog and his friends had when they arrived unexpectedly on the farm during pumpkin time! In addition to the usual activities and animals to see and feed on the farm trail there will be a Martian’s Maze, a Wild Witch Wood, Alien bales, a bouncy castle and Grog’s very own Scary Barn too! As if that’s not enough, this year our friends from NR Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Ipswich will be visiting the farm every day during the festival. In their Exotic Encounter Zone there will be a chance to learn about and hold some of the most amazing exotic animals in the world. How brave will you be? Entry during Holloween is £6 per person (2 years & under free) which includes all the activities, Exotic Encounter Zone and our usual Farm Trail activities and animals. Within the activity area hot and cold food will be available to purchase at our pop up Grogs Takeaway CafÊ. The Farm Shop will have lots of autumn fruit and vegetables on offer for you and the butchers will be busy preparing fine home grown meat and ready meals for all the family. Santa will be visiting Hollow Trees throughout December. Paediatric Physiotherapy – Q&A In September we introduced you to our newest member of the team, Paediatric Specialist Physiotherapist, Ruth Dunstone. A children’s physiotherapist specialises in treating children from birth up to the age of 18 and has the additional knowledge of childhood diseases with the expertise to assess and devise management programs suitable for varying stages of development. How can physiotherapy help children? Children are prone to different conditions and injuries to that of adults, often requiring a modified approach to management. It is a specialist area of physio as additional knowledge of such childhood conditions and child development is needed. Overall, the aim is to ensure that they meet their physical potential while encouraging an active lifestyle for health and wellbeing. What are the most common conditions that you treat? Anything from 'my child moves funny' to not meeting their development milestones or sports injuries. Most often though, it’s an issue with the legs, like tight muscles, pain or postural issues. When did you first discover that you wanted to be a children's physiotherapist? During my degree, I had two paediatric placements and I knew then I was 100% suited. Tell us about your experience in this field. I have worked with children for almost 9 years. I am currently working for NHS England with the Children's Physiotherapy team at Ipswich Hospital, but have previously worked in Gibraltar and at the Royal Hospital for Children, in Glasgow. I have a special interest in the early years and neurological problems. What do you find most rewarding in your work? There is never a dull day when you work with kids, they always surprise you and over the years I have been inspired by their resilience. What does Hadleigh Physio have to offer? When I first met Lottie and Will (owners) at the Hadleigh Show, they were incredibly warm and appeared dedicated to their profession. I like that it’s a family run business and they stand for the same principles I do. Importantly, the barn at Hadleigh Physio is a lovely big space to be able to assess children doing what they do best – playing. How can I find out more about the services that you offer? Please look at the website for more info and links or alternatively call/email with any questions. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Since being elected in 2015 I have been campaigning for a Sudbury bypass, and I am now asking you to join me in showing your support for this essential project. I sincerely believe that a relief road to the west of Sudbury is essential to alleviate the congestion which is damaging the historic centre of South Suffolk’s main market town. Economic development is curtailed and adjacent residents face high levels of pollution. Whilst Hadleigh still faces the issues around Benton Street, one shudders to think how gridlocked Hadleigh would be without the bypass we all now take for granted, but which I believe could bring similar relief to Sudbury. Let us not forget that an initial business case found that the cost-benefit ratio for the project is 3:1, demonstrating the enormous value it would add to our area. Moreover, the same report estimated that a bypass would reduce HGV movements through the centre of Sudbury by 60%. When the Roads Minister, Jesse Norman MP, visited Sudbury to look at the congestion that builds up in the heart of the town, it was made clear to me that strong local support will be absolutely vital for the future success of the project. As such, I have decided that a cross-party parliamentary petition, to be presented on the floor of the House of Commons, is the best way to formally document the support in Sudbury and the surrounding areas. The campaign already has the formal backing of Babergh and Braintree District Councils, Suffolk and Essex County Councils, New Anglia LEP and the Haven Gateway Partnership, but this is an opportunity for you to get behind the campaign. The petition is available to sign in Sudbury Town Hall and the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard, plus shops around Sudbury including Winch and Blatch, Kestrel Bookshop and Javelin Men’s Clothing. A full list of locations can be found at www.jamescartlidge.com alongside the online petition which residents can sign directly. We will also be running stalls on market hill on Saturday 7th October and Saturday 21st October. I would be most grateful for your support.

A note from the Head teacher Thank you to parents for all of your support last academic year. We are incredibly proud of all our pupils who worked so hard at all the different tasks and assessments they were asked to complete. Brrr! We all enjoy an early morning run around the field but those of us who are “vertically challenged” come in with a very damp undercarriage! And not only us dogs, recently arrived Rupert the baby pig squeals in disgust when the grass is wet! You should have seen Button’s face when the little porker first arrived and chased her around Mum’s legs. Our resident Norfolk Terrier was not impressed! I’m so pleased 15 year old Billy, a Jack Russell cross, has found a lovely foster home with a great big garden. Mum is hoping for another happy ending, but this time for Erica and her five kittens. Some mean person dumped the poor pregnant puss but she and her litter are safe with us now and waiting for new homes. Meanwhile the kitchen still resembles a wildlife sanctuary with lots of birds receiving regular TLC, much to Ollie’s disgust! The fundraisers are looking forward to meeting lots of you at our £1 in the Ansell Centre, Hadleigh, IP7 5DL, 11-2pm on 14th October. After that is the Christmas Fair at The Old School, Long Melford on 19th November. That reminds me to remind you – make sure you keep your pets safe before and during Bonfire Night. As the 5th is a Sunday, people might set celebrate early, maybe even at Halloween, so please be prepared. I can’t impress upon you enough how scary fireworks are to all animals, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Third Annual Gayford Flyer Sportive
Hadleigh Cycling Club’s third annual sportive attracted 188 riders to the town on 10th September. The sportive is named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. Mike Motteram, Chair of the Club said, “It was terrific to see so many riders, especially those that had never attempted 60 miles before. The feedback has been very positive. “The Flyer is a team effort and we couldn’t have carried it off without Benson, Chris, Phil, Farhad, Lucy, Kate, Rickaby, Colin, Kevin, Martin, Trudi, Molly, Deborah, Tracy, Gale, Paul H, Tori, Jack, Paul S, Steph, Claire, Simon, Phil, Nick, Julian, Lee, Ken, Maureen, Matt, Adam and Rob and the cake bakers. Mike also thanked the Flyer’s sponsors - The Pedal House, The George, Sunny Day Cycleworks, The East of England Co-op, Crockatt Garage and Rattlesden Gliding Club. The Club will make a donation to local charity, Brendan Oakes Trust. There was a raffle for Prostate Cancer UK which raised £193. Paul Spraggons is riding the first stage of the Tour de France in 2018 and has set up a donation page - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tourdespraggs Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 8am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. We also run more informal rides on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling
Hadleigh WI Last month a number of our members enjoyed an afternoon tea in Jean Madge's garden. Our thanks to Jean for a lovely, relaxing afternoon in the sunshine. At our September meeting, our speaker was Rory O' Brien, who gave us a most interesting talk on the history of the Theatre Royal in Bury St. Edmunds. Apparently, there are only 8 grade1 listed theatres left in Britain, of which the Theatre Royal is one. It is also the third oldest working theatre in the country and the only one left from the Regency Period. The theatre on its present site was originally designed and built in 1819 by William Wilkins who also designed the National Art Gallery in London. It enjoyed great success during the Regency Period and later but after changed fortunes, the building was bought by Greene King in 1920 and became a barrel store for over 40 years. In 1965 the Operatic Society raised money to buy it back and in 2005, a number of prominent people raised even more money to restore the theatre to its Regency style which we enjoy today. We now, of course, are planning a future trip to the Theatre Royal! Our Lunch Club are going to visit the Boat House at Dedham on Friday, 22nd Sept. Our next meeting will be on Tues. 17th, Oct. when we will enjoy a Harvest Supper. New members are always welcome and if you would like further details, please contact Rae Stapleton Tel 01473 823585 or raestapleton@hotmail.co.uk

Are you on your own or perhaps have not travelled for several years for whatever reason? Would you like to travel but have lost confidence in doing so? Would you like to enjoy the company of fellow travellers but not all the time? If you have answered ‘Yes’ to these questions, the Travel Stop 2018 Escorted Cruise from Southampton may be just the answer. On 23rd September 2018, Travel Stop, your local independent travel agency, will be hosting their annual Escorted Cruise from Southampton to the Canaries and the Azores. This 14-night cruise also includes the beautiful island of Madeira and some privately arranged shore excursions, exclusive to the group. This no-fly option will give you the company of others if you wish, or the independence of travelling alone but knowing you have a host throughout the entire time, should you need. You may chose to dine independently in the variety of restaurants onboard, or join other guests and enjoy the company of your hosts or fellow travelling companions during your evening dining experience. With no pressure whatsoever, enjoy the freedom to be totally flexible but to enjoy the benefits of some exclusive excursions on a smallgroup basis. Again, these will be privately escorted but operated independently of Celebrity Cruises, giving greater choice, availability and totally flexibility. In a nutshell, you can ‘dip in’ or ‘dip out’ to suit you. Alternatively, if you like the finer things in life, you’ll want to travel in style. And it doesn’t get much better than Jet Set Sail. From the Private Jet Terminal at Stansted Airport, enjoy complimentary valet parking and refreshments before taking a private charter flight to Europe, where your cruise ship awaits. You'll need to check in only 1 hour prior to departure, and the luxury continues onboard your flight, where you can look forward to modern leather seats, a complimentary meal with drinks service and a luggage allowance of 25kg. After touchdown in Europe, you’ll embark your cruise ship to indulge in an unforgettable holiday. Plus, book an eligible Ocean View Stateroom or above by 14 November 2017, on selected European Jet Set Sail sailings, and the second person only pays half the cruise fare – plus you’ll both enjoy a free Classic Drinks Package.* For further information on either Travel Stop’s Escorted Cruise departure, or any other Celebrity cruise (with or without the Jet Set Sail option), please call one of our offices below. French’s yearly Quiz is Saturday 7th October 7pm at Boxford village hall, including Fish & Chip supper. Tickets £12, which must be booked in advance for catering purposes. Diana Witts and Mandy Flather along with their families do a fantastic job every year organising and holding our quiz night and it is always an enjoyable fun evening. The money raised is so very important to us, as we get little financial help running our local animal rescue Charity and value those few people who are kind enough to donate monthly to our worthy cause. We are hoping for another good turnout this year to help pay for some of our monthly feed, farrier and vet bills. As I have spoken about in the past in my news letter, we also help people who have problems in their lives with mental health, which includes those who have a lack of confidence in social areas. One of the groups we help are young people who have been out of work for over a year, French’s is presently working with Community Action Suffolk on one of their projects. Enclosed is a photo of Richard their team leader and two of the youngsters who are being helped, by gaining skills in gardening and painting at French’s. If you have anyone you know who may benefit from spending some time at French’s or are part of an organisation that we could work together with, please give me a call. With winter fast approaching it is a time for us to prepare for the tough slog it takes looking after all our animals in grim weather conditions, our day is spent keeping all our animals as warm as we can and giving them a lot more food to eat for keep weight and condition on. You have to be hardy and or passionate to stay on board and make it through the winter months in this type of job, as there is not much joy in freezing or getting soaked outside all day long, 7 days a week, but someone has to do it. I have been working outside like this for 44 years now professionally and it never gets easier, Just like our cat Hercules, I am getting older and my body hates the cold, I tend to look like an Eskimo when outside in the winter. I am looking to start some new projects and one of them will include growing of plants and vegetables, I do not have a clue, so would need to and love to have someone who can spare a few hours a week to guide those who will be involved and pass on some of their knowledge. I cannot do this without the help of someone who knows their stuff in the garden, so this is a call out for help, please get in touch with me, I would love to hear from you. If you have some spare time to get involved and possibly learn new fund raising skills that you maybe never knew you had, or show us what you know to work, then get in touch with me, let’s meet and I will introduce you to our animals and the young people who have had confidence problems that we help, we would love to see you see you. Hadleigh Skate Park User Group ran a highly successful Skatepark Day event on 16th September. Over 100 people of all ages came to the park to take part in competitions, watch demonstrations, have a go on mobile skatepark ramps brought in especially for the day and to participate in activities with the Porch Project including opportunities to design a new bin for the park and learning how to DJ (even the mayor got a DJ tutorial!). The main event was a competition designed and run by the skaters and split into three categories for rookies, amateurs and professionals with the winners being Tyler, Tony and Jake. The event had a real buzz and everyone really enjoyed themselves and even the downpour that meant a slightly earlier finish than anticipated didn't dampen spirits. The User Group ran the event to raise money and awareness about their campaign to raise further funds to add another section onto the park due to how successful it has been since opening in 2015. Young people were involved in organising and delivering a large amount of the event showing just how community spirited many of our young people in Hadleigh are. Finally, we would like to thank the following people who supported the event with donations or support to make the event happen: Porch Project, Babergh District Council, Kesgrave Town Council, Lewis Anderson, Hadleigh Parkside Pre-School, Idverde, Snowys Bait & Tackle, Iced to Go Cakes, RG Catering, Aleksandra Zych, Spirit Fitness Studio, Adnams, 'Be' Hadleigh, Spring Hill Sports Therapy, Flux Freestyle, Gary's Glass, Jack Cardy Personal Training, Maggies, Hadleigh Pool & Leisure, Grimsey Family and Kelvin Avis. It truly was a community effort and showed just how many people out there are passionate about supporting the brilliant young people of Hadleigh. We've only just finished this one so probably deserve a rest at the moment but we are already discussing the next event!

Autumnal aches and pains by Hadleigh Osteopaths

Autumn is most definitely upon us, and there are certain jobs and events that often result in the phone ringing for help and advice at Hadleigh Osteopaths. The cold damp weather can make old aches and pains reappear, and the darker evenings and misty days often result in a reduction of sporting activities enjoyed through the warm summer days and long evenings. The gardeners amongst us will be busy tidying and cutting back. This can be a rewarding time, as order is restored and the fruits of the summer displays have gone over. It is, however, tempting just to keep working, when common sense might dictate that jobs done in shorter bursts may result in fewer injuries. The ground is heavy at this time of year, so digging is harder work. We often see people who have spent an entire Sunday out in the fresh air in the garden or out on the allotment, who then collapse into a chair, and can’t move the next day because their back has seized up. Common causes of neck and shoulder complaints at this time of year include pruning high branches, raking leaves, and bringing heavy pots in to protect them from frost. It is better to vary your tasks, and set realistic goals for what you hope to achieve. Empty you pots of soil and compost before trying to move them, or place them on casters to make moving them easier. Early November brings a flurry of unexplained low back and neck pain. This can often be traced back to bonfire night. Standing in a field looking up at fireworks for an hour can exacerbate a grumbling low back or a mildly arthritic neck. Placing a small child on your shoulders is often another contributing factor! Make sure you do some gentle shoulder rolling exercises and tuck your chin to your chest to stretch the muscles at the back of your neck and shoulders. If you have an injury and you are not sure whether osteopathic treatment can help, please feel free to call in or telephone the practice. You do not need a referral from your doctor, and treatment is often covered by private medical insurers. All our practitioners are fully qualified and registered with the General Osteopathic Council. If you would like to know whether Osteopathy can help you, please feel free to visit our website at www.hadleighosteopaths.co.uk or telephone the practice on 01473 828585 Mobile 07770 746224. Music
Multisports Club
A lovely start to the year singing our school song ’Believe’ in our first whole school Assembly. The children were able to show their enthusiasm for the start of term through their voices and linking the lyrics to our ‘BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE’ stars. There will be lots of opportunities for musical activities throughout the Autumn term including whole class music lessons, instrumental tuition, choir, shows and finally our KS2 Carol Service in St Mary’s Church on December 19th at 2pm.
During the summer holidays Mr Peters, Mr Daniels and Miss Knock ran a number of mulitsports clubs. This was the first time that the school had run holiday clubs and they proved to be popular with the children taking part in many games including dodgeball, cricket, football, tennis, basketball and table tennis whilst having lots of fun. The children at HCPS have started back this school year with numerous lunchtime and after school clubs on offer. They have been choosing from dodgeball, tennis, tag rugby, football, hockey, cricket, netball and games club. Attendance is extremely high at the clubs, keeping the pupils fit and healthy during and after school. Arts and Crafts This is a celebration of pupil's hard work, created during the four arts & craft mornings which took place throughout the summer holidays. Pupils explored counties from across the British Isles and then produced an image of what that county was well known for, then the end result created our 'Proud to be British' display in the school's main hall. What fabulous creations were produced by our budding artists - Well done to everyone!
Summer Holiday Clubs Forest School We had an action packed fun day at the Forest School holiday club. The children spent the whole time in the school woods, where we learnt how to whittle sticks which we then used for cooking damper bread and marshmallows. We also spent a long time practising our fire lighting skills and made mini fires using cotton wool and vaseline as a fire lighter which we lit using a fire steel. It took quite a few goes and lots of patience and determination, but the children didn't give up and were thrilled when they got a fire started and kept it going by feeding it pine needles. We also had time to test out our balancing skills on our new slack line. Gym and Dance Club We held two half day clubs for children to learn gymnastics and dance. KS1 were able to use all the equipment and to practise and learn new gymnastic moves including rolls/cartwheels and basic vault jumps, followed by a dance session. KS2 also used all the equipment and learnt new moves including handstands, cartwheels and how to do a variety of vaults. They then made up a dance routine to music including some of the new moves they had learnt during the session.
HCPS Open Week From week commencing Monday 6th November at 10am each morning, our Headteacher Mr Pilkington will be conducting tours of our school for prospective parents. This is mainly aimed at parents whose child’s date of birth falls between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 as applications for starting full time school need to be submitted by mid-January 2018. If this is you and you would like to join Mr Pilkington, please register your interest at the school office, using the contact details below. We look forward to meeting you. We are of course happy to show prospective parents around our ‘good’ school at any time – please make an appointment via the school office.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 42 (October – November 2017) As it is ‘Goodbye to Babergh’ at the The Hadleigh Historian beginning of October, the front cover of The Hadleigh Historian Issue 42 features the entrance to the Issue 42 October - November 2017 Price £3 office in Corks Lane when opened after the District Council was first formed in 1974. The Council is moving to rented accommodation in Ipswich and so this wonderful group of buildings facing on to Bridge Street – some purpose built while other are refurbishments of older premises – sits empty awaiting its fate. The phrase ‘it walls could speak’ comes to mind as all of Hadleigh’s history is reflected in the stories that these buildings can tell: the prosperity of the woollen-cloth industry; the town’s borough status in the 17th century; the changing farming practices over the years; the 19th century revival in local industry; the birthplace of two remarkable people who served their country in time of need. Let us hope that sympathetic handling by new owners lets Hadleigh keep intact a very important part of its history. Another Hadleigh treasure is East House in George Street, unloved by Babergh District Council for so long. Now under the ownership of a person with vision, the building and grounds are being rescued from neglect. Research into the house’s history brings forth the story ‘Doctor Thomas Gibbons decides to down-size’. He might have been the person responsible for the building’s Georgian façade but he most definitely gave the property a landscaped garden with abundant fruit trees, a crinklecrankle wall and what is termed in garden design a canal. The occasional series ‘Lost buildings’ looks at the brick wall that stood in front of the Row Chapel in George Street for near three hundred years. Built at the end of the 16th century, a contemporary account gives the prices of bricks, tiles, lime, sand and hair and the door and its metal work, plus builders charges and transport costs. Fortunately, photgraphs taken in the 1880s show the wall before it was demolished. Under the title ‘Hadleigh in the 50’s and 60’’ Hadleigh Town Council is mounting an exhibition of photographs from Hadleigh Archive on 21 and 22 October, 10am until 4pm in the Guild Room (entrance opposite the church). The panels created for ‘Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015’ will also be on display. Those by Sue Andrews highlight the story of the town’s woollencloth industry during the 16th and 17th centuries and those researched and presented by Margaret Woods concern the trade in medieval times. I look forward to Hadleigh Town Council becoming more involved in historical events in the town now that it is ‘Preserving Hadleigh’s past for Hadleigh’s future’. Both series “We are the Hadleigh Clothiers” and ‘The Street names of Hadleigh’, researched by Hadleigh Local Studies Workshop, have come to their last articles. Perhaps there is something in the town’s past that you would like investigated or an aspect of the local countryside that has intrigued you? Please contact Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673) Available at Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser The search to replace Deborah Cadman as CEO of SCC continues after none of the top placed applicants for the role, proved suitable. The recruiting process will continue, but in the meantime, Sue Cook will continue acting as interim Chief Executive supported by other members of the corporate management team. I am incredibly please by the news from our young people, in that more students in Suffolk have achieved expected levels of GCSE attainment in English and Maths this year. Cllr Mick Fraser Around 80% of schools in Suffolk show 63% of students achieved a grade 4 and above in English and Maths this year. The figures suggest more than 2% more students have achieved the expected standard for English and Maths, compared with last year. Also, A level figures show that Suffolk pupils have once again performed well with the number of A*-E grades awarded above the national average. Figures show that 98.2% of A levels taken in the county have been awarded an A*- E grade, compared with 97.9% nationally. 77% of A level grades achieved were within the A*- C bracket, in line with national figures and a 1% increase on last year’s results. It’s been a great month for cycling in Suffolk with the increasingly popular Tour of Britain once again racing through the county’s roads between Newmarket and Aldeburgh with a host of top international biking stars. The county is now proving to be one of its favored destinations on the racing calendar. And well done Hadleigh Cycling Club for putting on its fantastic annual ‘Gayford Flyer’ sportive, one of very few nationally to finish at a pub! How the organizers managed to arrange for that challenging gusting headwind for the last 20 miles was a stroke of genius. My monthly surgery will be on the third Saturday of the month, the next one being on 21st October 2017 from 11am until noon in the Sharron Elliott room of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. Highways faults can be reported at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/ or by telephone on: 0345 606 6171. mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk. mob: 0793 551 2591

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Its THANK YOU time from all of us at The Shelley Centre to all of you, and your contacts, who voted for us in the Freemasons Charitable Foundation grant application this summer. Thanks to the number of on-line clicks we received, this charity was awarded the maximum £25,000 available for our region. We are just thrilled to bits. I think I’ve already mentioned part of the plan for using this wonderful boost to our capital: relaying the surface of the yard behind the stable block, where 20+ years of use by horses, ponies and rabbits has rendered it quite horrible. Work has begun already, Mr Chisnell’s team moved in on 8th September to re lay the surface for us, as the photos show. Funnily enough, this won’t stop the Fund Raising team from ploughing on! Their next event is an evening of Dancing to the music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, supplied by The Sound Brigade in Nayland Village hall on October 28th. There will be a bar and raffle, and the ticket price of £17.50 includes a two course dinner. Ring my Aunty Di on 01473 658 552 for details, this sounds like a great night out. My other picture shows two competitors enjoying the September Sponsored Ride. I wish I could have gone too, but I’m firmly anchored to my base. I just have to imagine what fun everyone had, especially when they got to the pub at the half-way point! More grateful thanks to participants, organisers, volunteers, land owners and the weather for making it a great event. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

The next meeting of the Hadleigh U3A will be at 2.30pm on Monday 9th October in the Ansell Community Centre, Hadleigh for the AGM and where Sara Doig will tell us all about ‘Kemp’s Jig’. All members and prospective members are welcome.
Kersey Mill Newsletter September saw visits from Suffolk Centre Caravan Club who stayed for Heritage Open Days. We were pleased to be open for tours during “Heritage Open Days with plenty of visitors who were privy to the latest stages of refurbishment on the Hurst frame. Heritage Open Days are co-ordinated nationally with the help of thousands of volunteers. The September event is an opportunity for private owners to allow free access for the public to see important historic buildings. Heritage assets of every age, style and function open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples. The Suffolk Centre Caravan Club were staying here during Heritage week and took great advantage of the Mill being open and enjoyed their own private tour. Jaguar Day was well attended with a range of very special cars on view. Works to the restoration of the mill have continued. Further repairs to the Hurst Frame have been carried out with the horizontal beam that runs along the front edge spliced and now ready to be lifted into place this coming weekend. Sections like this are very heavy indeed and can only be manoeuvred slowly by using a combination of ropes, elbow grease and block and tackle in tandem. The tickets to Santa’s Workshop are now on sale via www.kerseymill.net. Or telephone reservations can be made 01473 829317. They are already in high demand with some dates sold out. Don’t delay in securing your child/s ticket for the most unique and wonderful Christmas adventure that every child will remember. Santa’s Workshop is set within the ground floor of the mill, with elves at work preparing for Christmas. The Mill building lends itself perfectly and is characteristic for the workshop, with noises of elves at work along with cogs & wheels turning, the sack hoist comes in useful for Santa to send the sacks of gifts up to the waiting elves ready to load in the sleigh. It’s not like your normal Santa’s grotto. We have many teenagers that have been involved and helped with running these events and we look forward to welcoming some of those again back this year. All funds raised are for the Restoration Fund and over the last 4 years we have seen huge progress on this. Thankyou everyone for your support.

East Anglian Garden Group The new season is about to begin, on the 7th October, with the first of our autumn talks,’ Anything Silver’ by Howard Drury of Ashwood Nurseries. Howard was a presenter for ten years on Central TV’s Gardening Time, and is a consultant at the well-known Ashwood Nurseries. He will talk about silverleaved plants, and where they will flourish, and how to select the best ones for your garden. November 4th, is the AGM, and a good time to join the EAGG, if you have been thinking about it, as the subscriptions begin for the next year. Our speaker for the meeting will be Ken Thompson, with his talk ‘The Sceptical Gardener’. Author of No Nettles Required, An Ear To The Ground, and a regular column as The Sceptical Gardener in the Saturday Telegraph. He will be casting a quizzical eye on gardening topics including how bees improve strawberries, the difference between Spanish and English bluebells, compost tea, and how plants get sunburn! Also, at this meeting, EAGG life member, Barbara Segall, well known horticulturalist, columnist and author, will be signing copies of her exciting new book, Secret Gardens of East Anglia, with beautiful photography by the late Marcus Harpur, and published by Frances Lincoln. An ideal Christmas present for a garden enthusiast. Books can be ordered on line, and brought to the meeting to be signed, or can be ordered by EAGG for you, as long as we receive your order by 7th October. I am pleased to announce that our Celebrity Speaker for next year, on Saturday 17th February 2018 will be CLEVE WEST. His talk, entitled ‘Healing Gardens’ will describe his experiences in creating and working with the Horatio’s Garden for the spinal injuries unit at Salisbury Hospital. Cleve is a multiple Gold Medal winner at Chelsea, Best in Show Awards 2011 and 2012 and inveterate allotmenteer, (My Plot, published by Frances Lincoln). We expect a high demand for tickets as he rarely gives talks, and the venue will be announced once we have found a hall to hold everyone. Ticket prices will be ÂŁ7.50 for members, and ÂŁ12.50 for non-members. ÂŁ2.50 from each ticket will be donated to the Horatio’s Garden Charity. Annual subscriptions cost only ÂŁ12, and this gives you free entry to all the talks for the up- coming season (with the exception of the Celebrity talk), nonmembers are welcome at ÂŁ5 per visit, so it is much better value to join us!! We have a plant and book stall at the meetings, and free tea, coffee and cakes are served after the speaker has finished, giving members an opportunity to talk to other gardeners and enjoy some social time. Full details of next seasons talks will be found on the website, and any queries regarding membership or book orders can be dealt with by our secretary Matt Long on 01449 741551. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday September 11th 2017 At our last meeting we welcomed back Rod Tibbs for his second visit this year. His theme this time covered the wide ranging subject of growing vegetables and how to make good compost. Rod focused in on a small selection of commonly grown veg for the dinner plate and we all learned from his experience and tried and tested methods. A good gardener is one who passes on his or her tips rather than keeping them a secret. Kate and Ray Banks won the competiton for the longest runner bean, and by some distance, with their entry being only an inch short of two feet we all checked for the joins and failed to find any! And next up on Monday October 9th We have something a little bit different next time when we welcome Peter Maddison who will be sharing his expertise on butterfly conservation. Why not come and join us? We are a friendly bunch and are always pleased to see new people come along. Peter's talk will commence at 7.30pm and the meeting will be held at Hadleigh Town Hall (entrance opposite The Ram). The cost is ÂŁ3 for non- members and ÂŁ1 for members, to include refreshments and, as always there will be a raffle (where Dave and Margaret have excelled themselves recently with their prize gathering). There are also bargains to be found on the plant stall and, appropriately for this season, the competition is a vase of Michaelmas daisies. We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Down to Earth ...with Dave What a difference in the weather from last September. The mornings and evenings are, to say the least, a bit chilly with more than enough rain to keep the water butts in the garden topped up, handy when you are on a water meter. The plan to have dahlias following on from the gladioli on the allotment has really worked well, with masses of flowers being taken home for the ever improving patient after her very successful knee replacement. Mobility is still a bit of a problem for her, but we did manage to get away for a few days to see the end of the pier show at Cromer. This very traditional live variety show is said to be the only end of the pier show left in the world, and was a couple of hours of fun and dance - well worth the trip. While we were in Norfolk we visited Oxburgh Hall, one of the smaller National Trust properties. As always I had a browse in the second hand book shop for any old gardening books and I came across one by Michael Barratt called' Down to earth gardening'. For many years he was the question master for Gardeners' Question Time, and this small book is a collection of tips and humour from various sources. First published in 1974 a lot of the content is still relevant today. One chapter on propagation mentions visitors taking crafty cuttings. You think they have gone to powder their nose, when in fact they are in your greenhouse taking the top shoots off your prize pelargoniums. I find that you only have to ask and fellow gardeners are only too pleased to give you a cutting of their prized plant. Our garden is full of such gifts. On returning home the strong wind had broken some bits off the lemon scented geraniums. These were promptly converted to cuttings and should give new plants for next year. Now is also a good time to take softwood cuttings of many plants, including fuchsia, penstemon, hydrangea, salvia etc. Use a very gritty mix of compost. Select young strong shoots that are still green, not woody, trim below a leaf node, remove the lower leaves, insert the cuttings around the edge of the pot and put the pots in a warm bright spot, but not in direct sun. Water well and as soon as little white roots appear then pot them on. With luck you could have lots of new plants next year. September is a good time to kill moss in your lawn. Use a feed, weed and moss killer, apply sparingly with an appropriate wheeled applicator, ideally when rain is due within a few days. After a few days the moss will turn black and can be removed with a spring tine rake. Don't put the first couple of lawn mowings on the compost as they will contain weed killer residues which will stay in the compost. As well as being a fan of Monty on Gardeners' World, I also enjoy The Beechgrove Garden. This is set in Scotland and is broadcast on BBC2 early Sunday morning. It is more down to earth, with topics more suited to vegetable growning. Give it a try. That's all for now, Dave

The Planets Mars, Shines at magnitude 1.8 and moves from Leo into Virgo on the 12th. The Moon will be close-by on the 17th. Saturn, Shines at 0.5 magnitude in the evening sky. The planet is close to the Moon on the 24th. New Comet C/2017 01 (ASAS-SN) This comet was discovered on July 19th by the All Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae. The comet then was a very dim magnitude 15, meaning a large telescope would be required to see it. In just a few short days though it had brightened a hundred-fold, and rose to magnitude 10, meaning good binoculars could reveal it. This month should see the comet reach 8th magnitude which would allow it to be seen in even a modest pair of 10x50 binoculars. The comet is on a 11,500 year orbit, so it has not been seen before by humans, and it certainly won't be back again for at least this length of time again. It will be closest to the Sun, or perihelion, on October 14th at a distance of 1.5 AU or the orbital distance of Mars from the Sun. Four days later it makes its closest approach to Earth at 0.72AU. The comet passes close to the Pole Star, Polaris on December 6th, making it easy to locate. All being well, it should stay above magnitude 10 , and thus within binocular range until early January 2018. You can see that the comet appears as the green fuzzy ball in the centre of the image. The green hue is due to diatomic carbon within the coma (atmosphere) of the comet as it interacts with the Solar Wind released from the Sun. When viewed with your eye however, the comet will appear as a white smudge of light, this is because the human eye isn't as sensitive to green light waves as the modern photographic equipment . Should any of you reading this wish to view the comet, please do contact me and I will be delighted to show you this celestial ghost before it heads back out into the darkest depths of the Solar System. Until next month, Clear Skies. If you have any questions you wish answered, please contact me at, neilnorman03@gmail.com. Neil Norman. FRAS.

Level of “never events” at NHS Trusts prompt concerns from patient groups Patient safety groups have expressed concern after a near record number of serious avoidable incidents were recorded by the NHS last year. Surgery on the wrong part of the body, unnecessary procedures following cases of mistaken identity, foreign objects left behind after a procedure and patients falling out of windows were just a few of the so-called ‘never events’ recorded by the NHS last year. There were 424 of these incidents in 2016/17 – a figure described as “disturbingly high” by campaign groups, who say the same mistakes are being made time and time again. Among the litany of errors were 18 operations on the wrong knee and several cases where oral medicine was administered intravenously. Diana Infanti – Partner Misplaced vaginal swabs were a common problem across the health service with 31 cases recorded, while 42 procedures on the wrong tooth took place. On four occasions, doctors operated on the wrong patient altogether. As well as medical mishaps, three patients fell from improperly restricted windows, and in three cases a patient’s neck or chest became trapped in their bed rails. The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), of which Gotelee is a member, warned that lessons were not being learned – and urged hospitals to own up to failings to prevent cases being dragged through the courts. APIL President Brett Dixon said: “All too often, the same failures are repeated. Each never event ought to be treated as a red flag indicating a palpable threat to patient safety, yet more than twice a week someone has a foreign object left inside them, including broken drill bits, surgical needles, swabs, and bags used for the retrieval of specimens.” Peter Walsh, Chief Executive of Action Against Medical Accidents, added: “Never events by definition are perfectly avoidable incidents which often cause serious harm or death. The number of them that are being reported remains disturbingly high.” A spokesman for NHS Improvement, which oversees hospitals, said: “Organisations are expected to investigate and learn from mistakes, and the fact that more and more NHS staff take the time to report incidents is good evidence that this learning is happening locally.” How can Gotelee help? The NHS is held in the highest regard in the UK – and rightly so. But when mistakes are made and the duty of care to which patients are entitled is not met, it’s important to hold the health service to account. Making a claim could result in financial help to deal with the consequences of an error and could go some way to ensuring the same mistake isn’t repeated. How can we help? Gotelee has a wealth of experience in this area and can advise you whether or not you have the basis of a claim. If you do, we can support you through the process at any of our offices in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge or Melton. To find out more, call us on 01473 298180 or email diana.infanti@gotelee.co.uk

New Total Diet Replacement Range from Cambridge Weight Plan Last summer Cambridge Weight Plan launched a completely reformulated range of meal replacement products to comply with EU legislation – a process which started before the UK voted to leave the EU. Since then, due to further changes in legislation, and Brexit, Cambridge have been busy redeveloping a small range of Total Diet Replacement products. These have a lower calorie level – around 150kcals per product - but – they still provide the full complement of nutrients, hence the name Total Diet Replacement. It comprises 8 products – 4 shakes (banana, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, 1 soup (chicken & mushroom), 1 porridge and 2 bars (lemon yoghurt and peanut crunch). As well as being tasty and convenient, you can be confident you’re getting optimum nutrition for minimum calories. They are designed to provide 100% nutrition (3 or 4 products a day) without any conventional food, meaning speedy weight loss. As your weight loss journey progresses, you will gradually increase your daily calorie level by switching to the Meal Replacement products (all around 200kcals) and reintroducing some meals according to which step you move to after discussion with your Consultant. The Steps Plan has been carefully researched to ensure it is nutritionally balanced. It works because it focuses on more than just losing weight. It offers a combination of Cambridge Weight Plan products and everyday food choices, which will help you to build a better relationship with food. This means that you can maintain the weight you want, long after you’ve reached it. No Strings Dining Out Congratulations to all those who attended the initial meeting of “No Strings Dining out”. We had a most pleasant evening with congenial company and, we hope, made a lot of new friends. One brave man joined us! We were able to arrange a further evening meal at a local hostelry and look forward to many more in the future. An extra will be a luncheon locally every two months. We also decided to meet once a month, just for a drink, at the King’s Head, whose hospitality was most appreciated. Thanks to Cailen from the pub, for the photo. Passchendaele Continues In this article we remember: Edmund Budd - 8 October 1917 Bertram Wilfred Broom - 9 October 1917 William James Welham - 10 October 1917 Albert Ernest Whymark - 18 October 1917 William Edward Beer - 20 October 1917 Charles Haddon Betts - 21 October 1917 Although the focus for the Army in October 1917 remained the Third Battle of Ypres (The Battle of Passchendaele), the first Hadleigh man to fall in October was on the front line near Arras in northern France. The 9th Essex Regiment had taken part at the Battle of Arras in April and were still taking turns to hold the front line between Feuchy and Warcount. On the evening of 7 October the enemy sent over a heavy barrage badly damaging the trenches and men were sent out to carry out repairs. At some stage in that mayhem Private Edmund Budd was killed. He was born in Althorne, Essex in 1897 but by the age of four he was living in Hadleigh where his father Edmund and hs uncle Henry were both bakers and confectioners at what is now 85 High Street. He enlisted with the Essex Yeomanry in February 1915 and transferred to the 9th Essex Service Battalion later. He has no known grave and is remembered in the Arras Memorial. On the afternoon of 4 October 1917 the fine weather that had prevailed since the start of September finally broke as a miserable drizzle began to fall across the Ypres battlefield. The tragedy of Passchendaele was about to resume. The 11th (Cambridge) Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, who had been in the Péronne area of northern France were sent north to Flanders and from 8 October were engaged in repairing roads close to the front line. The work was carried out in daylight and under constant enemy fire, as a result there were many casualties. Among those known to be engaged in this work were Privates Bertram Wilfred Broom from Ipswich and Horace Everett from Hadleigh, both originally territorials with the 4th Suffolks. Bertrum was killed and his body never found. There is no evidence to show that he actually lived in Hadleigh, but he is remembered on the Hadleigh and Ipswich war memorials as well as the Tyne Cot memorial wall. What is known is that in 1919 his widow, who also was not from Hadleigh married her late husband’s colleague Horace Everett and they lived the rest of their lives at 104 Angel Street, Hadleigh. On 9 October the 4th Division which included the 2nd Essex went into attack to the north of Poelcappelle and following a creeping barrage, progress was made, but there were the inevitable casualties and among the missing was Private William James Welham. He was born in Beccles. By 1901 was living at East Bergholt and working at the xylonite factory at Brantham. In 1910 he married Hadleigh girl, Millicent Maud Beckett and set up home at 77 Benton Street. It is unclear
Royal British Legion Hadleigh Branch & Club
exactly when William volunteered or when he was sent to the Western Front, but he probably also saw action at the Battle of Arras. He is remembered on the Tyne Cot memorial and on the Hadleigh war memorial. The Royal Garrison Artillery’s Siege Batteries were used to send large calibre high explosive shells to neutralise the enemy’s artillery. The 265th Siege Battery was formed at Hartlepool in 1916 and went to the Western Front in March 1917. In October they were with the 73rd Heavy Artillery Group at Godewaersvelde just across the border in northern France and with them was Hadleigh man, Acting Bombardier Albert Ernest Whymark who was wounded in the abdomen, probably due to shrapnel and later died in hospital close to the Lijssenthoek cemetery where he was buried. He was born in Hadleigh and brought up in George Street probably at number 153. In 1911 Albert had moved to work in Ipswich and in 1915 married Ipswich girl Elsie Norton. He enlisted under the Derby Scheme in 1915 and was mobilised in June 1916 and went to France with the Battery on 27 February 1917. The Whymark family were to suffer multiple tragedies during the Great War, having links to four names on the Hadleigh war memorial. Albert’s younger brother Benjamin had been killed in action on the Somme in 1916 and his eldest sister Elizabeth had married John Betts in 1893 and their two eldest sons were to lose their lives in the conflict; Sergeant John William Betts died in 1918 and his younger brother, Alfred’s nephew, Lance Corporal Charles Haddon Betts died just three days after his uncle. Charles was born in Hadleigh in 1898 and lived in the New Cut and at Maltings Cottages, Station Road. At the outbreak of war he enlisted in the territorials, aged just 16. He was initially employed on home service duties with the 2/5th Suffolks. By July 1917, aged 19 he was transferred to a regular battalion, the 2nd Warwickshires and sent to France. In October he was engaged in Third Battle of Ypres and was among hundreds of his battalion who were wounded. He was evacuated back to England, but died en route and was buried at Etaples military cemetery on the French coast. The 1/4th York and Lancaster Regiment were in the vicinity of Potijze (one mile east of the centre of Ypres). Their war diary entry for 16-17 October reports; ‘Tents had to be struck during daylight as a precaution against enemy aircraft and very uncomfortable days were spent in the open’. 18 October at 11am; ‘an enemy aircraft dropped bombs on the camp causing 50 casualties”. Among those injured was Private William Edward Beer he was taken into hospital and reported as ‘very collapsed and suffering several severe bomb wounds in his arms, legs and back. His condition was very low because he had lost such a lot of blood’. He died two days later and was buried at Nine Elms cemetery just outside Poperinge. William Beer was born in Ipswich in 1880 and had moved to Sheffield. He was mobilised in March 1916 and landed in France in September. During his time in France he suffered trench foot and was once wounded and evacuated to England before his final fatal wounding during the Battle of Passchendaele. His parents had moved to 4 The Green, Hadleigh which is probably why his name appears on the Hadleigh war memorial. (Researched by Mark Brennan, Nigel Crisp, Jeff Ward. http://www.hadleighww1.com)

Wed 10 Oct Private Ernest Mitchell writes with his experiences of the battle front. At the time of writing ‘we are out of the trenches for what is called a few days’ rest, which really means a lot of hard training, road making or going up the lines with working parties. About five weeks ago a German shell dropped within twelve yards of me. It blew me up into the air and smashed my rifle but I landed on the ground quite safe’.

Rotary Review OBITUARY: It is with great sadness that I report the recent death of David Yorke Edwards. David joined Rotary in 1986 when he was village storekeeper in Stoke By Nayland. He enjoyed Rotary and took many Club appointments including Secretary and twice as President of the Club in 1994/5 and 2005/6. For a number of years he also played the part of Father Christmas during the Christmas Collections. Unfortunately ill health curtailed his activities during past 2 years or so but he remained an Honorary Member until his death. His funeral is on 3 October at 11am Holton St Mary church. CLUB EVENTS: Photographic Competition: Unfortunately, due to lack of entries it was necessary to cancel this event. BBQ: At the beginning of August a BBQ for members, family and friends was held in the spacious garden of Club Member, Linda Humphries. Linda and husband, Colin, worked tremendously hard to ensure that everyone enjoyed themselves. They bought all the BBQ food which together with desserts provided by members and partners provided a magnificent spread. Colin assisted by a friend manned the BBQ whilst Linda was busy ensuring that everyone was settled happily. There was opportunity to try various sports such as Putting, target bowls and Boule but most people were too well fed to participate. The weather was perfect and this topped off a super afternoon which raised £400 for the Club's Charity Account. A very big thank you goes to Linda, Colin and their two friends. Coffee Mornings: The Club is trialling an additional meeting each month in the form of a very informal coffee morning when members may drop in at any time or stay for whole meeting just to socialise. The first meeting took place in early September at Paddy and Scotts and proved a success with half the club turning up. A second meeting is planned for early October at the same venue between 11am and 12 o'clock. It also seems to be an ideal time to meet anyone who is interested in finding out more about Rotary so if you are such a person please pop in and say hello. SPEAKERS: District Governor, Robert Lovick, visited the Club recently. He spoke about his early life. He hails from Great Yarmouth area and started his working life with Norfolk police before moving on to become a representative for Birds Eye and finally working at James Paget Hospital where he still does voluntary work. He highlighted some of the initiatives taking place in the District this year including more involvement with social media, crowdfunding and working to improve life for homeless and lonely people. He congratulated the Club on avoiding closure and on the present growth in membership. MEMBERSHIP: Following on from the previous paragraph, membership is now 12 up from a low of 8 in 2016 but to enable the Club to carry out all its duties to the full more members are needed. 3 or 4 extra members would make a great difference. If you would like to find out a little more please bear in mind the coffee morning mentioned previously or telephone David 01473 827226. CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: Planning for this has already started and refurbishment is about to commence. The Club is always in need of collectors and other helpers so that if you think that you could give a little of your time during the period 13 to 22 December please contact David as above.

Dear Sir, I have been a Hadleigh Town Councillor since 2015 and it is disappointing that few residents, if any, attend the monthly Town Council meetings. If residents were to attend, even if they had no personal issues, it would be of mutual benefit. The Minutes of all meetings are published in the Hadleigh Community News, however the experience of attending meetings can be more informative and enlightening. Anita Young, Town Councillor
Dear Sir, We would like to say a big thank you to all who gave their financial, physical and moral support to the recent Festival of Gardening and Art. Without this warm acknowledgement of our efforts the Festival could not have happened. A special thanks to St Mary’s Church for their help and for allowing us to use their spacious premises for the grand finale exhibition. We have also much appreciated the enthusiastic feedback we have received throughout the Festival. It makes it all worthwhile. We will now be concentrating on the legacies of the Year of the Sheep and the Festival. Watch this space…… Festival Organising Team, Jane Haylock, Jane Snowdon, Jan Devey, Carole Burne
Dear Sir, I felt really lucky to be able to attend two fantastic events in Hadleigh this weekend (16th and 17th of September). Thank you to the organisers of, and contributors to, the 'Bra Ha Ha' and Skate Park Day. Examples of great skills and creativity and the amazing things that the people of Hadleigh do, without fuss, without drama-raising money and awareness for really important causes. Angela Wiltshire

Dear Sir, It was good to see Ms Wilson-Downes taking an interest in the Town Council meetings, however as she was not present at that meeting whoever gave her a report was factually incorrect. I would therefore like to correct the information particularly relating to the Cemetery and Layham Road playing fields. Hadleigh Town Council is the Statutory Burial Authority for Hadleigh, and has been aware for some time that by 2019 the Cemetery will be full. If not extended then the cemetery would be closed to new burials but would have to be maintained at a cost to the Town. Therefore a few years ago we pursued the purchase of further land, architects’ designs and planning consent. The Council will have to take out a Public Works loan to cover the development. However the Cemetery pays for itself, runs at a small profit and will by the time it is being used cover its costs. If the Town does not extend its Cemetery then residents will have to find alternative sites for burials at a far greater cost financially and emotionally. Our Council has also been aware that the changing facilities at Layham Road are poor and has been saving money towards new facilities. Plans have been drawn up and are under discussion at the moment. When the design is complete and planning consent obtained the Town Clerk will then begin applying for grants towards the new build. Unlike the Cemetery the sports facilities at Layham Road run at a financial loss to the Town, this has always been so. The use of the Rugby, Tennis and Football pitches are free to young people under the age of thirteen and half price from thirteen to eighteen, it is only adults who pay the full price and you do not have to be a member of one of the clubs to use them. Finally the Neighbourhood Plan group was not ‘dissolved’ but suspended for a few weeks. As an elected representative I believe I am still carrying out my role as a Town Councillor in ‘the best interests of the Town’. Jan Byrne
Dear Sir, We live near Hadleigh quarry, which is operated by Buffalo Crow Ltd., who has sought Environment Agency permission to bring in 519,586 tonnes of inert waste for contractual backfilling. This will entail at least 24 heavy duty lorry movements a day, increasing the current 7 or 8 to around 30 – 40 every working day for the next seven years or so. However, another company, JT Few Ltd., has applied to Suffolk County Council to install a wash plant at the quarry to wash and process the aggregates it produces and close down when the quarry is exhausted. Their application reference is SCC\0157\17B. The proposed plant is very large (40m x 39m x 8m) and capable of processing over 450,000 tonnes per year, completely dwarfing the quarry’s 36,000 tonne annual output. It also requires four very large silt lagoons, each 80 metres x10 metres of an unknown depth, water silos and massive aggregates stockpiles, all of which pose a very real danger to life for children who can, and do, trespass on the quarry site. It is completely unnecessary for quarrying operations and will not benefit Hadleigh in any way. Installation will almost certainly be very expensive, so we are concerned that, despite what the application says, permission will very rapidly be sought to bring in aggregates from far and wide to keep the monster fed, and, within a year or so, to have it accepted as a permanent site, blighting the area for decades to come. How else can it be viable? The plant will create noise, dust and potentially lots and lots of additional heavy duty lorry traffic. 450,000 tonnes a year could mean a at least 130 heavy duty lorries queuing up to use the already very busy Aldham Mill Hill/ A1071 junction every working day for decades to come, plus another 30 - 40 every working day for the next seven years. Does Hadleigh really want all this and a very large, noisy, dusty, potentially hazardous processing and distribution plant on its doorstep possibly for many years to come? Google: ‘Hadleigh quarry petition’, for an online petition protesting against the wash plant Mr & Mrs N. Pechy
unprofessionally as I did not attend the meeting. However, could it be that the minority are unable to pursue their own agenda because the majority of the democratically elected council can see the wider picture. Finally, I see a small town that has improved and expanded sympathetically over the last couple of decades; well represented with numerous sports and clubs, parks, and footpaths all for the use and enjoyment of residents and visitors. I see a High Street that must be the envy of other towns, a first-rate medical centre, and a good local economy. For an ancient market town to achieve so much yet retain much of its fundamental history and architecture is amazing. Surely this shows that the Town Council have taken into account the needs of a changing society yet preserved the integrity of the town for future generations. J McNelly
Dear Sir, Residents in the Castle Road area of Hadleigh will be relieved to know that so far the field at the back of Castle Road, which has a very popular historic footpath from Hadleigh to Kersey and has stunning views as you approach Hadleigh from Sudbury is not included for development in the first draft of the new Babergh Mid Suffolk Local Plan. There is obviously some way to go before the Plan is approved and is unlikely to be in place before 2020. Land which has been included for development is Site Reference SS0909 in the area is land west of Aldham Mill and Gallows Hill, Hadleigh where a development of 80 properties is proposed. The draft of the Local Plan is available for inspection at the Hadleigh Town Council offices on 11 October 2017 between 2 pm and 7 pm and I would urge you to go along and make your views known to Planning Officers and find out more. Go to the Babergh website and look under Planning Policy for all the latest information and the sites which are being put forward for development over the next 10 years. Meanwhile progress on a Neighbourhood Plan for Hadleigh has come to a halt - Hadleigh Town Council are taking the lead on this and whereas other Town and Parish Council's like East Bergholt, Lavenham and more recently Lawshall either have a plan in place or is out to residents for approval Hadleigh Town Council are dithering and sadly lagging behind. The importance of the Neighbourhood Plan is that residents views can be taken account of in the new Local Plan for Babergh and Mid-Suffolk but if we haven't got a Plan in place your views will be ignored when considering the future of Hadleigh and planning applications. Please take an interest in what is going on and make your views known to your local Town Councillors and Hadleigh Town Council. Carol Schleip

Dear Sir, I write in response to Emma Wilson-Downes’ letter (Sept 17 issue) regarding the Town Council Meeting. Firstly, I cannot understand Ms Wilson-Downes’ assertion that “…all living people within the town will be disadvantaged” if the proposed cemetery expansion takes place, instead of improvements to the sports facilities at Layham Road. Hadleigh Cemetery is not only for the dead! What type of community would we become if we take away a right that has existed for centuries, the choice of being buried rather than cremated. The living can take great comfort when visiting their deceased relatives and remember, it is not only the old that die. I believe that many people would be emotionally disadvantaged if they could no longer bury their loved ones, if it is their wish to do so. Surely the Layham Road sports facilities could bid for lottery funding, community grants or sports council funding. In any case, I would suggest that not all Hadleigh’s living residents could possibly have an interest in sporting activities, although, undeniably, it is fantastic that we have these facilities for those who enjoy competitive sport. Secondly, I cannot comment on the allegation that the majority of our town councillors are behaving

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN WORKING GROUP The Clerk had provided all Councillors with a copy of the proposed Constitution and Terms of Reference for consideration. A request was made for Councillors to provide nominations and seconders for membership to the newly appointed Neighbourhood Plan Working Group to the Town Clerk by Friday 8th September for consideration at the September Town Council meeting. HADLEIGH CEMETERY Three points were brought forward for agreement: A named vote was requested. i) To approve the revised specification having ascertained from Babergh District Council that planning requirements had been met. Voting was: For: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Haylock, Matthews, Monks, Sheldrick, Whiting. Against: Councillors: Shearly-Sanders, Wilson, Young. Abstentions: Councillors: Haines, Wiltshire. ii) To instruct the Town Clerk to progress the Public Works Loan Board (once confirmation has been received from Babergh District Council). Voting was: For: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Haylock, Matthews, Monks, Sheldrick, Whiting. Against: Councillors: Shearly-Sanders, Wilson, Young. Abstentions: Councillors Haines, Wiltshire. iii) To instruct the Project Managers – Bullards – to go ahead with the new cemetery extension (once confirmation has been received from Babergh District Council). Voting was: For: Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Haylock, Matthews, Monks Sheldrick, Whiting. Against: Councillors Shearly-Sanders, Wilson, Young. Abstentions: Councillors Haines, Wiltshire. Councillor Young requested it be minuted that she expressed concerns that the new specifications now no longer meet British Standards or Government Guidelines on Disability. It was pointed out that this would be confirmed by Babergh District Council Planning Department who were being contacted by the Architects and Engineers for clarification. It was pointed out to members that as these motions had been voted on and passed the matter of the Cemetery Extension would not appear on future agenda’s and could not be discussed for a period of six months. BABERGH ASSOCIATION OF PARISH AND TOWN COUNCIL’S CONSTITUTION All Councillors had been provided with a copy of the Constitution by Councillor ShearlySanders who recommended Hadleigh Town Council adopt and sign said Constitution. It was felt that as the constitution stood it did not meet the requirements of Hadleigh Town Council and raised a number of issues. A vote was taken as to whether Hadleigh Town Council should sign the constitution as it stands – Voting was: For 2; Against 7; Abstentions 4. Hadleigh Town Council will not be signing the Constitution as presented. REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Haylock reported that the Wool Town Association launch would take place at Kentwell Hall on the 26th September. A copy of the business plan is available in the office and also on-line. TO RECEIVE THREE MOTIONS FROM COUNCILLOR SHEARLY-SANDERS Councillor Shearly-Sanders withdrew all three Motions which he had previously submitted. The Clerk would provide him with the new Councillor Welcome Pack which he advised he had not received on joining Hadleigh Town Council. At this point Councillor Cook requested that Standing Orders be suspended in order that the meeting could continue past 10pm and all the business on the agenda be dealt with. This was agreed. TO RECEIVE MOTION FROM COUNCILLOR WILSON Visit Hadleigh domain name ownership. Resolution/Motion - To instruct the Town Clerk to write to the Hadleigh Steering Group requesting that ownership of the Visit Hadleigh domain name be signed over to Hadleigh Town Council. I am concerned that should the Steering Group which has no official status no longer exist that the domain name could fall into the hands of someone with no affinity to the town. The Clerk advised Councillor Wilson of the owner of the Visit Hadleigh domain name as found on the internet and Councillor Cook proposed an amendment to the Motion that the Clerk be instructed to write to said owner but it was felt by Councillor Wilson that the information provided was not correct. It was agreed that the domain name and ownership be clarified for the September Town Council Meeting. The motion was not voted on but may be presented again at the September Town Council Meeting. It was noted that the McCarthy & Stone Development decision notice had now been published and is a 21 page document. FUTURE PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETINGS The Chair asked for members opinions on how they felt the meeting had gone following the introduction by Babergh District Council of paperless planning applications and receiving details by e.mail. It was agreed that at the next meeting the projector and screen be used to view plans through a power point presentation. The Clerk was asked to request paper copies from Babergh District Council and find out how long they would take to arrive and would there be a cost involved and could a proper hyperlink to the application be provided. The Clerk would provide a weekly list and supply e.mails to members on a weekly basis not as received. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN This item has been referred to the Town Council Meeting. 7 BRIDGE STREET The Committee noted the discharge of conditions application for B/6/01701/FUL/SAS – Condition 9 (Archaeology) MOTION PROPOSED BY COUNCILLOR WILSON How to finance a challenge to Planning decisions. Resolution/ Motion, To instruct the Town Clerk to investigate how this Town Council can fund a challenge to Planning permissions allowed by Babergh District Council contrary to the advice of this Council and the wishes of Hadleigh residents. This should include consulting with the Councils solicitors, planning consultants and the BAPTC. The Clerk should report back to the next Town Council. This motion was seconded by Councillor Sheldrick. Councillor Byrne requested an amendment to the Motion – that the second paragraph be removed. This was seconded by Councillor Cook. Voting was: unanimous. This motion was carried. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Councillor Cook asked the Clerk to write to Babergh District Council and advise them how difficult it is for members of the public to work out which planning applications are appropriate to Hadleigh in the list in the East Anglian Daily Times. They only appear as a list of numbered Planning Applications and no longer show the town or village first as used to happen. This is not a particularly helpful way to find out about planning applications. During the meeting a request had been made for mediation to be arranged following certain comments that had been made during the meeting. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.05pm. Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org. However, if you do not have access to a computer and would like a hard copy of the 'Welcome to Layham' booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk 07920 713940. Parish Council Main matters discussed at the Meeting of 30 August 2017: • Babergh District Council report Babergh’s end of year report had been published online; the Chairman commented that there were several references to health and wellbeing, and helping communities to be more active, and he felt this was relevant to the PC’s desire to see the pavement between Upper Layham and Hadleigh widened. With regard to the Joint Local Plan consultation, Councillor Ward said Babergh would be pleased to receive as much feedback as possible. He confirmed that ‘the Layham built-up area boundary’ was the village envelope; there were no sites identified in Layham for housing and economic development. Babergh had confirmed their continued support for Hadleigh Market – in response to a question about the cost of pitches and the impact on High Street traders, Councillor Ward said he would investigate. • County Council report With regard to the proposed Sizewell C power station and the report published by SCC highlighting possible alternative locations for accommodation for workers, Councillor Jones confirmed that this was a national project and the final decision would be made at Westminster. In response to a question, he said the law did not permit ‘legacy’ regarding accommodation. Commenting on recent exam results, he noted that Hadleigh High School pupils had performed well. • CPR training The Chairman confirmed that 7 PCC members had signed up for CPR training, which would be held in St Andrew’s Church on Wednesday 13 September, from 6pm-7pm. The training would be delivered by Dr Simon Gaunt and Charles Panting, an ex-policemen and ambulance driver. • Water bursts The Clerk had received a response from Anglian Water about the continuing water bursts/leaks near Dixie Cottage. Anglian Water had confirmed that they were fully aware of the issue and the water main in question had been put forward for replacement; however, this could apparently take several years to be completed. • Highways / footpaths The PC had requested a police presence at a meeting earlier in the year with regard to dog attacks on a public footpath, but no one had been able to attend. SL had raised this with the Police & Crime Commissioner and the Chief Constable, but it seemed unlikely that the police would be able to attend any meetings in future, due in part to lack of funding and personnel. SL had said that, nevertheless, the parish council would have appreciated being kept informed of the outcome; Inspector Kevin Houghton had promised to contact the Clerk. • Green Team A meeting would be organised in the near future with parishioners who were interested in working with the Green Team on projects, including a wild flower meadow in the conservation area, a bug hotel and restoring the otter holt. Discussions had also been held with the Stour Valley & Dedham Vale Project, who are keen to reinvigorate the banks of the River Brett by planting shrubs and trees. • Planning There were no objections to the application for change of use of the barn and cattle shed at Pope’s Green Farm to residential use, including the erection of a link extension and a single-storey front extension. There were no objections in principle to the application for an extension and associated works at Hillside, Upper Street; however, councillors felt that, should the proposal to increase the height of the front garden wall be approved, the owner should be encouraged to plant shrubs on the road side of the wall to soften its appearance. • Defibrillator for Brett Green The Clerk had received confirmation from Babergh’s Planning team that a planning application would have to be made in respect of the housing for the defibrillator, at a cost of around £100, as the land was not owned or maintained by the Parish Council. As the land was, in fact, owned by Babergh and as the defibrillator would be for the benefit of the community, Councillor Ward said he would speak to the appropriate Cabinet Member and report back. • Pavement between Upper Layham and Hadleigh The Chairman referred 52
Telephone Community News on 01473 823366
to the planning application for the erection of 11 houses on land at 120 Benton Street (formerly Hadleigh Building Supplies). The PC had approached Suffolk CC to ask whether this might provide an opportunity for the pavement to be widened at the same time. • Babergh & Mid Suffolk Joint Local Plan Consultation Babergh and Mid Suffolk DCs had produced a draft Joint Local Plan and the consultation period had started on 21 August; it would run until 10 November. A series of meetings were being set up and Layham PC had been invited to one on Thursday 7 September, in the Guildhall, Hadleigh. There would also be a series of public drop-in sessions during October and November. Hot Sunday Lunch? Simon Daunt and Charlie Panting demonstrated on "Annie" how to check the airways and administer chest compressions before we all had a go. Now we have three (and a fourth planned) defibrillators in the village we need to know what to do between the time that someone has a cardiac arrest and a defibrillator is fetched. If you are interested in finding out more – watch these pages for advertisements for further introductory sessions or contact Jane Cryer our Parish Clerk to put your name on the waiting list (layhampc@gmail.com or 07920 713940). Layham’s Emergency Plan This may sound a little ‘over the top’ for a small village like Layham, but emergencies, by their very nature are unexpected and in some cases beyond our wildest thoughts. The members of the Parish Council (led by John Curran – Layham’s Emergency Officer) have put into place a plan which will enable immediate action to be taken in the event of unexpected problems. This is action that can be taken before local authority services arrive or to augment what they are doing. Thirty Emergency Link Volunteers have been recruited to liaise between the Parish Council and the 240 homes that make up our Parish. One of these will be contacting you during October requesting the completion and return of a short questionnaire designed to help the Parish Council to know who to contact in the unlikely event of a serious emergency. Please complete the form and return it. Thank you A seat in memory of June Gurr John Gurr has been planning a seat in memory of his late wife June ever since she died in January of last year. He liked the idea of putting it on the playing field quite near to where he lives. The Playing Field Management Committee members were delighted to agree with his proposal and, at last the job has been done. Friends of John and of the village of Layham made the base and fixed the seat. The picture below shows Colin Brown, John McLeod and George Wyatt at work preparing the ground. Layham Green Team The Parish Council Green Team is planning a work session on the conservation area at the river end of the playing field in about a month’s time. One of the jobs is to try sowing part of the area with wild flower seed – which requires turning the soil over with a rotovator. We are looking for a volunteer who owns such a machine and would be prepared to bring it along for an hour one weekend and use it to prepare a patch of ground to receive the seed. If you would like to help please contact either Sheila Roberts (827270) or Doreen Sillett (822095). Thank you.
Layham Playgroup CIO We have been getting to know all our new families at playgroup and the children are settling into the playgroup. The weather has provided us with lots of different opportunities during our outdoor play; we have had bubbles and streamers on windy days, walks to see the changes in the trees on sunny days and puddles to splash in after rainy days. The weather has also helped the flowers and vegetables in the Playgroup garden to grow. Our sunflowers have grown very tall and our tomatoes are starting to turn red. We are waiting for our apples to be ready to pick from our apple tree. As the think about the changing season we are looking forward to celebrating our Harvest Festival with our friends at St Andrews church. Thank You
Hadleigh Hares race Internationally
To the people of Hadleigh and surrounding villages, from the family of Lee Patrick Day who passed away on 5th August aged just 45, our thanks to you all for care, love and understanding at Lee’s passing. We as a family were deeply touched by your lovely comments about a quiet and lovely man who would have been a little embarrassed by all the love that the town showed. The service for Lee was held at the United Reformed Church to a full house. Nigel led the service and delivered a wonderful and beautiful tribute, to all of you, your singing was amazing. A few people to thank, to Nigel for his help and guidance, Pat for looking after Lesley, Rose Bud flower shop for all your help and Sarah for the lovely poem. To the team at Kingsbury & Saunders for so much care and giving us time on this difficult day. To the staff at Sue Ryder for your kindness. To the committee, supporters and staff of Hadleigh United Football Club, Lee’s second home, we thank you for the minutes applause in his memory. To Donna for the lovely food, well done. Lastly a huge thanks, from all of Lee’s family, to Mandy the lady we first met at the undertakers, without your help and understanding the family would of struggled to put this together. From all of us many thanks to you all
European Sprint Triathlon Championships at Düsseldorf Elizabeth Stewart's race started with a 750m open water swim, exiting the water on a horrid climb up steep slippery steps. The bike leg was on closed roads, light rain made them very slippery but Elizabeth managed to pull off a strong fast ride. The last leg was a 5k run consisting of two pleasant laps along the side of the river. Finishing time 1.24:44 swim 13.27 bike 38.00 run 27.12. Elizabeth said "My total time was 1:24:44 putting me 8th in Europe. As it was my first international event, and I didn’t know what to expect or do particularly well, especially because my training didn’t go to plan because I had my GCSE’s and my brother was in hospital. However, I have learnt a lot from this experience and it has given me confidence to aim to qualify for Glasgow in 2018." ITU Duathlon World Championships Penticton Canada Iain Johnston raced in the sprint distance duathlon. He had 2 really good runs and a great bike leg on which proved to be a difficult undulating course. The descents were terrifying but Iain pulled off a great race finishing 28th in his age category. Davina Greenwell raced in the standard distance duathlon. The course was relatively flat but there was a constant head wind in every single direction. Davina pulled off a great result with finishing 5th in her age category. Davina said "The whole team experience was great and I can’t wait to do it again as I automatically qualified for next years’ world champs in Denmark and also the European Championships in Ibiza." UCI Grand Fondo World Championships Albi France Three Hadleigh Hares travelled to Albi France to participate in the UCI world championships after achieving qualification at the Tour of Cambridge cycle race back in June. Trudy Avis and Steve Bowen raced on the 97 km circuit which had an undulating profile with 2 big climbs. Hydration was key in the race with temperatures reaching 35 degrees, both competitors were happy to reach the Albi Motor Racing Circuit to push for the finish line after giving it there all and coming away with brilliant results. Trudy - 02.57.54 hrs - 15th GB, 43rd World Steve - 03.25.26 hrs - 44th GB, 166th World Leon Hayward raced on the 155 km course, this was divided for the start and for the finish with the 97km route (ladies and over 60 men). The course tested all riders with having many ascents to climb especially in the heat. Hadleigh Art Club Activities October is going to be a busy month for the Art Club. On the 3rd of the month it is suggested that members should develop cartoon characters and create a comic strip. This is a follow-up from the previous week’s cartoon workshop. October 10th it is harvest time. Bring fruit or a vegetable. Stone Decorating is the task for October 17th. The idea is to create a personalised paperweight. You’ll need a rounded stone an old brush or two and some acrylic paints, (some of which will be available). Issy Wright is paying a return visit with a watercolour workshop on October 24th and the following week it is suggested that members will finish off the work started the previous week and share the knowledge gained. That brings us to Autumn leaves, but that is November. New members are always welcome at the Hadleigh Library where the club meets on Tuesday afternoons at 2 o’clock.

Once again, on Sunday 19th November 2017, Hadleigh Hares A.C. will be hosting their successful road races. We have been thrilled that the last two years have seen places for the Turners Blinds and Shutters 10 mile race and John Chisnall 5 mile race sell out before the day. There is a real love for running in East Anglia and our undulating race attracts runners from Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and further afield. Entries are open for the races via the Run Britain website and more information is found on our club website. It takes a lot of time and effort to run these races and as a small club we rely on all of our members to help out with the organisation and marshalling. We thank everyone for their support. If you would like to help with marshalling please contact hadleigh10@hadleighhares.co.uk. Hadleigh Physiotherapy support our Junior Fun Run, this is an approx. 2k run suitable for all ages. Starting at 10am, giving parents a chance to watch or run with their children before the adult races, the race is well marshalled and uses part of the river walk path as the course. Adults must run with children under six and we have prizes for the following age categories: 1st Boy & Girl overall 1st Boy & Girl U6 1st Boy & Girl U8 1st Boy & Girl U10 1st Boy & Girl U12, 1st Boy & Girl U14 1st Boy & Girl U16 This year we are taking entries in advance via the Run Britain website. Advance entry for the Hadleigh Physiotherapy Junior Run is £4. Advance entry for the Turners Blinds and Shutters 10 mile run is £14 affiliated / £16 non affiliated (minimum age 17). Advance entry for the John Chisnall 5 mile run is £12 affiliated / £14 non affiliated (minimum age 15). Thanks to the generous support of our race sponsors, Turners Blinds and Shutters, M Chisnall and Sons, Hadleigh Physiotherapy and the East of England Co-op every finisher receives a rather lovely medal and goody bag on finishing. We are looking forward to another successful race day and thank the people of Hadleigh and the surrounding villages for their support.

Tidy Town Volunteers It was a very productive Friday, cleaning Toppesfield picnic area, tables etc and then on to Pykenham Way, Charter Close and known hot spots for litter in that area. We picked around QD, Morrisons, car parks, parameters and surrounding areas and grass verges along the route to the bypass. We collected three bags of rubbish, one was left at Morrisons and there are two bags of rubbish, a piece of metal and a broken computer chair left for collection by the waste bins near Pykenham Way. Sunday was another very productive morning when we picked the length of Hook Lane and roadside verges at both ends. There are two bags of rubbish beside the Hook Lane sign on Pond Hall Road and another two bags beside the dustbins outside the houses on Hook Lane for collection. There is also a 'Road Closed' sign laying on the grass on the corner of Hook Lane and Pond Hall Road. This sign has been hanging around for months, behind trees, previously reported but never collected. Woodthorpe Road and the footpath from Cottesford to Station Road were also picked and there remains a road sign on the corner of the footpath to Cottesford on Station Road for collection. This sign was left after the recent road closure at the top of Station Road. Grateful thanks for all who came on the picks this weekend and to those who provided refreshments for our après pick socials.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex It has been a successful season at the Meadow, with many things to be proud of – the first being given the keys to our newly extended pavilion on a Friday night in early May. The novelty factor still hasn’t worn off, and it is still very much a work in progress, with plenty of projects planned for the winter to get the pavilion ready for an official opening in 2018. If you can still help with funding our Phase 2 work please visit our JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/hadleighcc-brickheroes On the field the 1st XI led the way with a very creditable season, finishing 6th in Two Counties Division 1. New Zealander Brock Price scored over 1,000 runs – the first time a Hadleigh player has achieved that feat for at least 20 years. He made five centuries and averaged 51, as well as chipping in with some useful wickets. It is unlikely any club did better business in the overseas market, and it would be great to see him back next year. He was well supported by the likes of Tom Piddington, who scored 601 runs at 37, and Josh Davey, with 764 runs including six 50s. Captain Ben Wallis was voted Player of the Season thanks to his all-round performances, weighing in with 372 runs and 26 wickets. The 2nd XI had relegation confirmed, but only once our final game had been abandoned. In fact, despite only winning two games, we would have stayed up with just two more points – in reality however, we have been up against it all year against some vastly superior opposition. Vice-captain Simon Gladwell deserves much credit for carrying the bulk of the captaincy burden, as do the senior players for never letting their heads drop and always enjoying a beer afterwards. We look forward to life in Division 5 but there needs to be plenty of hard work over the winter. Our most successful side was the Academy XI, who reluctantly accepted their promotion from Division 4 of the Hunts League. We got one over Milden in the big match last month but they won the title so well done to them. Player of the season was Owen Tampion for his all-round performances, including 73 against Elveden, and for some quite impressive banter, which never fails to raise a smile even in dull periods of play, such as when I am batting or Tabs Willis is bowling. The Ladies can also look back with pride on their debut season. They finished fifth in Section B of the Two Counties T-20, winning five games – a great achievement, with players of all ages making encouraging contributions. Frankie Stenning and Harriet Pettit showed why they are representing Suffolk, while Neve Flanagan returned some of the best bowling figures in the league, with two 3-wicket hauls. Neve deservedly took home two awards at the end of season presentations: the Ladies Player of the year and the Claireaux Cup for the club’s most improved young player – the first time a female player has won this prestigious award. We have quite an evening in store on October 14th, when England cricket legend and Strictly Come Dancing star Mark Ramprakash is the guest at our dinner. It promises to be a wonderful night under a marquee at the Meadow. All 250 tickets have now been sold, but to enquire about last-minute ticket availability please contact promoter Simon Gladwell: simon.gladwell@copdockmill.co.uk / 07801 928911. Gary Wiles
Harvey Watts triumphs again in Suffolk Junior Event Harvey Watts, who plays off two, has continued his purple patch by retaining the Suffolk Junior Matchplay title at Bury St Edmunds. The Newton Green 17-year-old beat Bungay and Waveney Valley’s Conal Downing as his opponent finally crumbled on the last hole of a closely fought encounter. The pair were level going up the last hole, but Downing’s wayward tee shot meant he could not recover to snatch the title from Watts, having to concede the hole. Earlier in the day, by a similar margin, Watts had had beaten Alfie Halil of Flempton in the semi-finals, and the previous day in the first round put out James Iron of Haverhill 8 & 6, before getting through the quarter finals with an extra hole, play-off win against Max Adams, of Bury St Edmunds. Watts, who became joint course record holder at his home club a few weeks ago, was in the Newton team which finished sixth out of 30 teams in the recent England junior team championships at Woodhall Spa, and will be young enough to try and win the county title for a third time next year. He received the trophy from Suffolk county president Colin Firmin.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United’s F.A Cup run came to an end at Hertford by four goals to one. That was followed by a three goal win against Fakenham in a league match at the Millfield, a fine performance. In the F.A Vase we reached the second round with a narrow win at the Millfield against Essex side Wadham Lodge. A league match at Clacton was narrowly lost but Felixstowe were convincing winners in a floodlit match. Defeat by two goals at Stanway was followed by a one goal victory against Ipswich Wanderers at the Millfield in a Friday night match. A pleasing feature is the excellent condition of the pitch which is expertly maintained by Mervyn Bignell. The Reserves made a splendid start to the season with a draw against Walsham at the Millfield being followed up with a narrow victory from a trip to Whitton thanks to a goal just before the end. Our second string look like having a successful time after a poor season last year. The Thurlow Nunn youth team have lost against Leiston and Framlingham recently but have won twice against Needham Market. This young Hadleigh side also look certain to do well once they settle down under the new management of Martin Cumberland. They play all their matches in midweek. Attendances for all three teams are up this season which says a lot for the entertainment provided. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Louise Hay and John Day. Ground Improvement winners was John Day. HADLEIGH UNITED FIXTURES First team fixtures for October for Hadleigh United begin on Friday 6th at Wivenhoe. On Tuesday 10th Stowmarket come to the Millfield followed by Haverhill on Saturday 14th. A long trip to Fakenham takes place on Saturday 21st while the return match at Stowmarket follows on Tuesday 24th. A busy month ends at home to Kirkley on Saturday 28th. The Reserves have a Suffolk Cup match at home to Stowmarket before a cup match at home against Walsham on Saturday 21st. Hadleigh Reserves then travel to Felixstowe on Saturday 28th. Our Thurlow Nunn youth team go to Ipswich Wanderers on Thursday 5th before a home match against Woodbridge on Wednesday 11th. The curtain comes down at Stowmarket on Thursday 26th.
