EXCELLENT FARES RELIABLE SERVICE September 2015
01473 829700 bookings@hadleighprivatehire.co.uk
Flock to Hadleigh High Street! At 9am on 26th September the created sheep on the High Street will be joined by the real thing when a flock of over 40 woolly beauties from Bridge Farm, Chelsworth will make their way down the Town’s main thoroughfare to the seclusion of St Mary’s Church Yard for the rest of the day. The safety and behaviour of the flock will be in the capable hands of the farm’s shepherd, Ed Hawkins, who is not only Chairman of the East Anglian Sheepdog Society but also part of ITV’s Flockstar team. This unique happening will mark the last day of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep celebrations which the town has embraced with gusto and enthusiasm following its launch at the Hadleigh Show in May. Since then there have been bunting-making workshops, concerts, talks, children’s activities, a Bo-Peep Picnic, Brett water rafting, quizzes, a film and sheep-making groups throughout the town and in Hadleigh schools. Once the sheep are safely grazing in St Mary’s church yard, the Grand Finale Day celebrations will begin in and around St Mary’s Church. Throughout the day, well known townsfolk will give costumed presentations entitled ‘We Are the Hadleigh Clothiers’ and there will be two lively performances in the Town from Morris Dancers. In the afternoon a children’s choir will entertain visitors and quiz lovers will finally hear which of the completed Ewe Know Quiz sheet qualifies for the cash prizes. Inside the church to enjoy at your leisure are three fascinating displays exploring Hadleigh’s Medieval Woollen-Cloth Industry, ‘We are Hadleigh Clothiers’ and Hadleigh’s Medieval Manor. Our thanks to all behind the scenes for making this community event possible and for giving Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015 such a memorable finale.

Rosa Simon Music Fund: late summer update
GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and Big Ben
Here at Rosa's Fund we hope that all of the readers of the HCN have been enjoying a relaxing and happy summer. Some folks though have been incredibly busy raising money for Rosa's Fund and we'd like to thank everyone for their brilliant and inspiring efforts, including form 7d at Hadleigh High School who raised £150 through a cake sale, St. Mary's School who collected donations totalling £319 after each KS2 end-of-term performance and Hadleigh United FC at whose charity match versus FC Sudbury £225 was collected. In addition, Mrs Elaine Goh's pupil concert raised £115.50 and Miss Maggie Addison's pupil concert another £50. Thank you all so much! In turn we've signed off on a couple of applications for funding, including £467 to St. Elizabeth Hospice for them to buy a new keyboard for use in their music therapy sessions for bereaved children. Coming up, there are two great musical initiatives backed by Rosa's Fund: the launch of the Hadleigh Junior Choir in association with the Hadleigh Community Choir on 22nd September and the inaugural Hadleigh & District Young Musician of the Year Competition on 28th November. We're also starting to think about possible initiatives for next year, including another workshop/concert event, a musical instrument amnesty and setting up long-term bursaries to support talented young musicians, singers and performers. But nothing is yet set in stone and if you have any ideas for projects which Rosa's Fund could support, please contact me on danton89@hotmail.com Thanks! Paul Simon & Family

This month I write to you with much excitement. After arrangements that were a year in the making, I was privileged to be able to join a tour of Big Ben in London. I had to be at Portcullis House (which is opposite Big Ben) by 8.45 in the morning. My housekeeper Maria was none too pleased but made sure that my chauffeur Frank had brought round the motor car from the Motor House spick and span to leave by 5.30 as dawn was breaking. I was astounded that the trunk road to London was packed with commercial vehicles (vans all in white carrying artisans and tradesmen to the City) so early. I had expected to be greeted at Westminster by Black Rod but a beadle welcomed me instead. I joined a party of twelve and we made progress down an escalator, then under the pavement and to the door of Elizabeth Tower, Big Ben. The Palace of Westminster had been destroyed by fire in 1834 and it was not until 1859 that Big Ben was complete and ticking. The first bell had fractured and indeed the current bell has a crack and there is a hole in it where the damage has received attention. It was some 350 steps to the top of the Tower. We saw the workings of the clock itself. Did you know that in 1976 damage occurred to the sails that control the 2 ton weights causing them to crash to the ground and for the massive clock mechanism to fly out of its housing. It was fortunate that no one was killed but the clock was rebuilt in 9 months for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. It was 9.45 am when we were looking at the clock and shortly before 10.00 am we had sat on the shelf inside the clock face lit by loads of Philips bulbs on an opposite wall and then we were up in the open by the bells. There were 16 chimes on smaller bells prior to the 10 strikes which followed 11 seconds later. I waited with great anticipation, my ear plugs in place. Big Ben struck and I felt the bell reverberate through every bone of my being. It was a very emotional experience. I felt that I was at the heart of Great Britain, as indeed I was. I had had a remarkable time which I will remember and speak of for the rest of my days. Frank borrowed my ear plugs on the return journey! As with the devastation to the Big Ben clock one never knows what is around the corner so it is best to be prepared. All of my readers should have in place a Lasting Power of Attorney so that other people can run their affairs should one no longer have mental capacity. No soul should leave us without having a Will in place so that one’s affairs can be administered and distributed. Do give me a call if these issues ring a bell. The house market is reasonably buoyant and please do ask us to take on your conveyancing. As you all know, I have thirty years of experience as a Solicitor, a qualification of which I am proud. Rotary Review CLUB EVENTS: 1 The summer BBQ took place in July and was blessed with glorious weather for the second year running. Some 40 - 50 people enjoyed good food and company being well looked after by Steve and his family at the Queens Head Layham. Many thanks, Steve,Tanith and family! Around £440 was raised and split between Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding and Hadleigh Rotary Charitable Trust Fund. 2 At the time of writing this the Club summer outing is about to take place - this year to the Riverside Restaurant Woodbridge. A report will appear next month. 3 Coming shortly is 'Music for an Autumn Evening' with the Hadleigh Community Choir. This will take place at Hadleigh Baptist Church on Saturday 3rd October and tickets £7.00 will soon be available from members, Keith Avis, and The Idler Bookshop. SPEAKER: Thomas Rowson, grandson of Club Secretary, Geoffrey Cooley, spoke about his involvement with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, a charity set up to find cures for blood cancers mostly affecting children. It was founded in 1960 by the parents of a child who died of leukaemia and has raised millions of pounds for research over the years. So much so that now 9 out of 10 children survive the cancers and the aim, of course, is to reach 100%. There has been no government funding but now it is backing clinical trials of new drugs for blood cancers which may also help in the treatment of other cancers. Thomas first started competing in the Blenheim Palace Triathlon 2 years ago and its main partner is this charity. He decided, therefore, to make the charity his main beneficiary during 2015 and has already completed a number of events including Blenheim, London Triathlon, a 10K run finishing at Wembley Stadium. The highlight of the year however, will be participation in a walk of 100K in the Sahara Desert. Thomas is paying all his own expenses so that all monies raised will go to the Charity. Club members are supporting him and wish him every success in this adventure. MEMBERSHIP: Please remember that to find out more about Associate and full Membership of this Club just ring David 01473 827226. Dying Matters The first Hadleigh Dying Matters event earlier this year was a huge success and plans are already underway to follow this up with a bigger event next year. The date for your diary is Saturday 14th May 2016. Added to this, we are arranging more exhibitions to be viewed from Tuesday 10th May through to Thursday 19th May. Our well received and very moving Embroidery Exhibition is returning by popular demand and we are adding a strikingly different exhibition of 8 sculpted heads depicting one person’s range of emotions when diagnosed with cancer. We are also hoping to hold a series of free master classes throughout the Saturday in the Guild Room opposite the church on relevant subjects to End of Life Care and Dying. More information to follow over the next few months. So why, you might ask, do we feel that this type of event is so important? Kate Brett from the Hadleigh Health Centre writes:“As a health care professional with many years of palliative care experience I understand that End of Life Care is an emotional, emotive part of life's journey, one which many find difficult to talk about. However, good communication and planning, using a multiagency approach, is an effective way of making your wishes known. A patient held document is available to use as a method of recording your wishes. This advanced care plan enables your thoughts, feelings and instructions to be documented and shared with those involved in your care. This document can be discussed with a variety of clinicians including, GP's, district nurses, the hospice or hospital teams, Marie Curie and Macmillan nurses. At the end of life, quality care is paramount. We know from the positive response received following this year’s event, that those who attended were able to discuss a variety of issues with participants and, for them, lots of questions were answered. It is hoped that by continuing to share our thoughts and experiences with you over the next few months leading up to next year’s event, we will continue to promote discussion and thought about this very important part of life.” We hope this has given you a flavour of how we can help you, so make a note of the date and further information will follow in the months leading up to the event. Pauline, Jess and Kate
News from Hadleigh United Reformed Church Our new minister: After a period of nearly two years, Hadleigh URC is delighted to announce that we have a new minister. All in our community are invited to and will be most welcome at the induction and ordination of Bryn Rickards as the new minister of Hadleigh and Sudbury United Reformed Churches at Hadleigh URC on 19th September at 2.30pm! Wildlife haven in the centre of Hadleigh? As the pressure grows on bees and other insects, and on the birds, reptiles and mammals that feed on them, gardens are now an important habitat, especially those that are not trimmed and tidied too much! Now Hadleigh URC church has agreed to turn part of its garden into a wildlife meadow so there is a safe refuge right in the centre of town. A small group of enthusiastic amateurs are planning to remove all the non-wildlife-friendly shrubs and manage the garden as a flower meadow. We would love some help, especially for the heavier work at the beginning, so if you love digging, sawing logs and other health-promoting activity do get in contact with Phil Wells (phil@the-wells.net or tel.827878).We plan to start in September and sow our first native plant seeds in time for a spring ‘launch’. And if you know about meadow management, own a scythe or are keen to be involved longer term, we would love you to join the team; we’ll be doing some traditional mowing in July and October each year to keep it working as a home for wildlife.

‘All’s Blooming at The Boule-in!’ It’s not just business that is blooming for The Boule-in, Bildeston’s stylish French store, but also its quince tree which is fruiting for the first time! ‘It’s great” laughs Cathy Bullen, proprietor, whose annual French exhibition weeks are now firmly established in Suffolk’s seasonal diary. “We have been blown away by the success of our London store The Boule-in, Kennington which opened in the spring - but we have to admit that we love hosting our Suffolk Fetes best! As for the tree, we planted it on our return from living in France to celebrate our first ‘Fête de Coing’ four years ago - and now it’s bearing fruit! We lived in Cotignac in Provence, a village famous for it’s Coing (quince) and celebrated all things ‘quince’ in September: Our ‘Fête de Coing’ is slightly different in that we fill the garden and barn with objets d’art, original quirky pieces to decorate your home and garden - rather than quince! However we always try and create a fun French atmosphere…” In this she is absolutely right - a visit to a ‘Boule-in Fête’ is a unique and completely charming affair: browse around the pretty garden and barn and be tempted by the glorious collection of new stock fresh back from their latest trip to Provence. You will be offered a coffee and an irresistible brownie on arrival - perhaps it will be quince flavoured this time! Also exhibiting Riverside Bulbs and Sophie Grattan-Bellew Interior Design Consultancy The Boule-in Autumn Fair: ’Fête de Coing’ runs from Saturday 19th until Sunday 27th September (10am - 5pm daily) 77 High Street, Bildeston IP7 7ER www.boule-in.co.uk
Bereavement and Loss – Training Day October 3rd
Trusted by local families since 1925
Kingsbury & Saunders 61 George Street Hadleigh 01473 823117
This one day event is intended for anyone, who has experienced Bereavement or Loss of any kind or would like to help someone who is experiencing either, whether you are a family member, friend, or professional working closely with others. As well as the first of these two days on August 8th, we ran two of these days in 2014 and those who attended found the day very useful and informative. It seems we all struggle with what to say or do for those who are experiencing loss. The learning on the days will be about the theory of grief and the grieving process, dispelling the myths around it and giving more understanding of how to ‘be’ with someone. Importantly helping us to learn what not to say. The days will be led by Sue Pullen, about whom a brief and relevant background is given below. There will be an opportunity to talk in pairs or in groups, where participants are free to share their own experiences and concerns if they wish. It is advised that the day is for people whose experience of Loss or Bereavement is longer than 8 – 10 months. Saturday October 3rd, in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh from 10am – 4pm. We are able to offer these days for a small cost of £10 per person towards expenses thanks to our sponsors. Drinks will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Sue Pullen is co-ordinator for a community bereavement service in Essex, called Steppingstones and a qualified and experienced Counsellor and Supervisor. Before that Sue worked in an adult and children’s hospice for 14 years, firstly on the care floor and then in the family support team. Sue also offers bereavement training to both the general public and professionals. Sue writes: ‘I am passionate about this subject and believe this is one of the last taboos. If we can talk and understand about death and the grieving process, something that will surely happen to us all, maybe we can be alongside the bereaved in a meaningful way. I believe that bereavement is a process to be supported not a problem to be solved.’ Please book your place by contacting or leaving a message for Pauline Thrower on 07909 796266 or email at pauline@pt-counselling.uk OR at St Mary’s Church Office 01473 824987 or email at office@stmaryshadleigh.co.uk and you will be sent a booking form to complete and return. In August Hadleigh Evening WI members were out and about enjoying each other’s company. They visited Hollesley Bay Colony where the Suffolk Punch horses are the main attraction. They are surprisingly tame. Two mothers with foals greeted all visitors over the fence round their meadow. Another horse with handler demonstrated skills required pulling loads. Other attractions included a museum of artefacts used in farming in the past. For younger visitors a there was a play area and rabbits and others small animals to pet. A visit Aldeburgh provided a breath of sea air and a plate of their famous fish and chips. It was then off to the Jubilee theatre to see Alan Ayckbourn’s play “How the other half loves” a confusing comedy about the lives and loves of three married couples of different social class. Their interactions involved affairs and it would seem, sex. Eating out is a favourite past time. This included dining out at the Boat House Dedham, the Anchor in Nayland and taking afternoon tea on the Lady Orwell whilst enjoying a trip down the river Orwell from Ipswich to Pin Mill. Jean Madge provided afternoon tea in her house and garden. Fifty pounds was raised for SESAW a local animal sanctuary. The West Suffolk Federation celebrated its 95th Anniversary with a garden party for members at their headquarters in Bury St Edmunds. At the July meeting Ann Day a volunteer guide gave a talk about famous women in Ipswich, a subject on which she has gained considerable knowledge whilst leading visitors walking around Ipswich. There is an excellent website with details this and other walks round Ipswich. Hadleigh Evening WI’s next meeting will be on Tuesday 15th September in the Seminar suite above the library starting 7.30pm. It will be a members evening. An opportunity to look back and celebrate what has been a memorable 2015 for the WI. Visitors and new members are welcome. For further details you are welcome to contact Philippa Carruthers Tel 01473 823057 Email phil.carruthers40@hotmail.co.uk

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We are pleased to confirm that we have been accepted by the Charities Commission and entered in the Register of Charities No. 1162885 Winter in Hadleigh (SWH). We will shortly be able to confirm a post box number and address to receive correspondence. Our aim is to provide support to those who fear winter and the struggle they have to survive through it. We are also aiming to work closely with the major charities and cover the gaps that their services find out of their range. We will as a new and small group concentrate solely on Hadleigh and the adjoining villages. There will obviously have to be certain conditions to what can be supplied in support but we will always endeavour to cover the basic needs in times of emergency. Should you wish to know more of our aims and can offer support either by sponsorship or personal input we would be pleased for you to contact one of the first two names below, thank you. Remember that it is anticipated that in the order of 350 people will die in Suffolk as a result of the cold this winter. If we cannot look after all of them let us at least try to help those with whom we are neighbours. Fred Breyer, Chairman 01473 829127 Peter Gower, Treasurer 01473 827005 Nick Webber, Trustee
County Councillor Brian Riley will be holding a walk in surgery on Wednesday 16th September upstairs in The George in Hadleigh from 6 until 7 p.m. You are welcome to drop in or to call 07866 581 556 to discuss your concerns and interest in the well being of our town. Appointments are not necessary.

Head Chef Justin Kett talks spa-inspired food for the health conscious by The Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa Head Chef, Justin Kett, talks about the spa-inspired food being served at The Swan at Lavenham to appeal to health conscious foodies and spa goers alike. The Swan is going through a very exciting time with the recent opening of Weavers’ House Spa. In June we launched a new aspect to the Brasserie menu featuring an irresistible selection of raw meals to make you look and feel great. Our delicious wellbeing menu is an exciting collaboration with well-respected Suffolk naturopathic nutritional therapist Maggie Franks of www.deliciousnutritious.co.uk. All our dishes centre on the very best of fresh, raw ingredients. Everything stays below 28 degrees, so you get the full nutritional impact of each ingredient. I learned a lot from Maggie following a culinary master class we did together such as: making sure nuts are soaked to get the enzymes working, so they break down in your body giving you all the nutritional value before you digest them. Vegetables are spiralised or cut fine on a mandolin, so you get the crunch, creating a lot of different textures. Maggie did a lot of the background research for me which I've implemented in the new menu. We’ve also considered how people feel about what they are putting in their bodies to help those with allergens and gluten free dietary requirements. Just tell our waiting staff if you have any food related allergies or special dietary needs and we’ll do what we can to accommodate. If you want to recreate these dishes at home, all the ingredients we use are pretty accessible in most good supermarkets, but you may need to hunt around a little more for some of the seeds and nuts. A couple of my menu favourites are the pear and rocket salad with pumpkin seeds cured in a little palm sugar, watercress, coriander and lemon dressing. Another wonderful dish is the Weavers' Green Power Salad with avocado, celery, grapes, honey almonds, gem leaves and young shoots. If you’re not a raw food convert yet, just curious, you can fuse your salad with a variety of healthy protein options such as steamed sea bass fillet, lemon grilled chicken or char-grilled halloumi. And of course we still serve our famous afternoon tea for those that want to indulge a little more. To book your table call 01787 247477 or email: bookatable@theswanatlavenham.co.uk Visit www.theswanatlavenham.co.uk/restaurants to find our full menu.

On Saturday 13th June Elaine Goh held her biggest ever annual pupils' concert at Hadeigh United Reformed Church. A very large audience of proud parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and friends were treated to a wide variety of music on piano, violin and flute (Catriona Goh's pupil) and dazzled by the high standards of the performances. As has become the tradition at these events there was a retiring collection and we were able to send £115.50 to the National Autistic Society and give £115.50 to the Rosa Simon Music Fund (pictured). On Saturday 13th July Hadleigh United Reformed Church played host to Trinity College music examinations, where eighteen pupils of Elaine Goh, Maggie Addison and Catriona Goh were successful in their exams taken in piano, singing, violin, viola and flute. As there is so much musical talent in the Hadleigh area on Saturday 28th November, at Hadleigh United Reformed Church, the Rosa Simon Music Fund is launching the first Hadleigh & District Young Musician of the Year competition, where children and young people up to the age of eighteen will be able to participate in a variety of classes and there will be two cups awarded for the Rosa Simon Junior Young Musician of the Year and the Rosa Simon Senior Young Musician of the Year. Details and entry forms are becoming available this month from schools, private teachers and venues in the town. Anyone who would like further information is welcome to contact Elaine Goh on 823574.

Hadleigh Hairloom is having a facelift Well, September is upon us. Autumn is knocking on the back door and creeping through the been-left-open-for-ages windows, making us wonder whether to drag out a cardy or sweater. And wouldn't you know it ……..I’ve seen those things (I cannot bring myself to say ……cards) in the shops! This summer has been, at times, kind of ok-ish - sort of, but its definitely shown up all the little faded bits, the getting a bit tired bits and the fact that we have been rather enthusiastic with the floor! You might have noticed over the course of this spring and summer we have been steadily making improvements to the salon; not least our lovely, very efficient blind. And it is to this end we’re dragging your attention our way again. We’ve been lucky enough to secure the services of a top local tradesman for a few days during the third week in September, and as there is a lot more to do than a quick repaint it wouldn't be possible during the hours we would be closed after a Saturdays' workday and re-opening on Monday morning, so we will be closing for two days - 21st & 22nd of September - Re-opening as normal on the 23rd September We are very excited about our re-fit. Having now been open 18 months, we keep finding we’ve run out of space to fit everybody in to the standards to which we aspire. As a result, we are extending the interior stud wall, moving some larger equipment, putting in two entire new work stations, redecorating, and generally bringing everything back up to the scratch of opening day! For the first year of trading we settled in, found what works best and offers the most to the clients; during this second year of trading we’ve made our plans for future development and are now executing them to ensure your on going comfort and our efficiency in serving our community. We’re sorry we’ll be unavailable to our clients on Monday & Tuesday 21st/22nd September, and as the two days we are closed would normally be senior concession days we would like to offer that concession to our ever patient seniors for the Wednesday and Thursday of that week. As ever we look forward to seeing each and every one of you and we hope you’ll all look forward to seeing your newer, brighter and smelling of paint, I've no doubt, Hairloom! Enjoy the last embers of our summer. With much fondness as ever, Sharron, Julie, Girls & Pups xxx
Puddle Ducks – Swimming lessons in your area for babies, toddlers and pre-school age children Are you looking for swimming lessons for your little one? Our new term has just begun but you can join us at any point in the term so please do get in touch to find out more. Swimming is one of the most amazing experiences you can share with your baby or toddler! You can start swimming with us from a few weeks old up until they reach the age of 5. There are many benefits to swimming with your child, listed below are just a few: • Classes really help to build your child’s confidence around water, especially as they learn vital personal survival skills and can even help with activities at home such as hair washing! • The fun content of lessons with lots of songs and activities helps children learn to swim without realising it! Many of our 2 year olds can now swim short distances independently • Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns • As classes are based on age rather than ability, your child (and you!) will be making friends with children at a similar age • Even though gentle, baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby's heart, lungs and respiratory system • Being in water with your child lets you share their swimming journey and learn how to practise in your own time • Encouraging children to take regular exercise helps to promote a healthy routine from an early age • Providing your child with water confidence and water safety will not only protect them but open the doors to many opportunities in the future Our teachers adapt every activity to suit each child. Our baby-led swimming approach ensures that your child's needs are expertly fulfilled - never forcing development, but rather nurturing it to ensure a positive experience and love of swimming. The children have great fun whilst learning important discipline around water. Classes are filling fast so don’t delay, book today – suffolk@puddleducks.com or 01473 356222.

Physiotherapist Chris Paine joins Hadleigh Physiotherapy team We are very excited to introduce our new member of staff, physiotherapist Chris Paine. Chris is very passionate about his profession. In fact, his desire to pursue a career in physiotherapy started very early; inspired by watching Ipswich Town’s physios running onto the pitch to treat injured players when he was a little boy. He later went on to study Sports Science, before qualifying as a physiotherapist from Brunel University in 2009. He has since worked in the community and at Ipswich and Colchester hospital. Additionally to his role in the NHS and at Hadleigh Physiotherapy, he specialises in sports injuries and works with the Ipswich Town Academy where he treats acute and long-term injuries of 9-16 year old players. Previously, he held a similar position at Ipswich Rugby Club. Chris doesn’t just treat budding football stars, he is also a keen sports person himself. His biggest passion is open water swimming - this year he came 4th in the Great East Swim at Alton Water! A fantastic achievement. If Chris isn’t training his backstroke, you can also find him swinging a golf club, cycling or competing in the “muddy” Rat Race at London Excel. Chris holds a regular clinic at Hadleigh Physiotherapy on Tuesday evenings and is also available for home visits on Thursday and Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. If you suffer from any acute or long-term conditions or sports injuries, please don’t hesitate to give us a ring on 01473 810185 to book an appointment with Chris.
Royal British Legion Membership Explained The Royal British Legion has recently changed its membership process. In the past your local branch was responsible for collecting membership fees. That has now changed and new and existing members pay their fees directly to the RBL when they join or renew their membership. This is easily done in a number of ways. The standard annual national membership is currently £15, going up to £16 from 1 Oct 15. Additionally, those wishing to make a small contribution to the Hadleigh Branch, can do so by adding 50p. This extra contribution supports the Hadleigh Branch committee who exist to deliver the RBL’s charitable work at a local level. The volunteers of the Hadleigh Branch committee organise the local Poppy Appeal, Remembrance Day and other commemorative events. They also provide comradeship and representation for local veterans and their families. On the welfare side, they assist local veterans and their families and they have volunteer visitors who provide regular visits to elderly veterans, for a cuppa and a chat. Hadleigh also benefits from a Royal British Legion Club on George Street. The club is managed by the ‘Club Committee’ which exists to promote and manage the social club and its activities. Those wishing to use the club facilities need to pay an additional annual ‘Club Membership’ contribution of £8.00 (£6.00 for OAP) from 1 Oct 15, which goes towards the upkeep of the club. Summary RBL annual fee from 1 Oct 15 = £16.00 To support the Hadleigh Branch Committee add = 50p To use the Hadleigh Club facilities from 1 Oct 15 add = £8.00 (£6.00 OAP) For membership advice or an application form, please call Mark on 07780 975787

Could local Mums go all the way?
A group of local mums who regularly attend an adult dance class in Bildeston once a week are through to the semi-finals of Ipswich Has Got Talent! Most of the group have had no formal dance training and see their weekly class as an escape from all the monotomy that life has to throw at them; a time to forget about the stresses, let their hair down and have some fun! 'The Hot Mamas' as they are now known, were first formed when some of the class regulars had an opportunity to perform in front of a huge audience at a show in Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston; since then there has been no stopping them and they now regularly perform as a group at any given opportunity. Entering Ipswich Has Got Talent was the first competition as a group - and many were both very anxious and full of adrenalin; but once the music kicked in, they performed and entertained the judging panel and proved themselves worthy heat winners beating off lots of very talented competitors. The group from Bildeston, Chelsworth, Monks Eleigh and Hadleigh into the semi-finals consist of Debbie and Holly Bailey, Caroline Gage, Hayley Hynard, Tara Marshall, Rebecca Hiscock, Lorraine Pearce, Vicky Bolton, Lucy Hayward and Janet Mackie - who will all strut their stuff once again with a show stopping routine choreographed by Lesley Woods (Principal at Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts) on Sunday, 6th September at the Ipswich Regent - let's wish them well and hopefully we will see them into the finals! Go All The Way Hot Mamas!

THE OBSERVER County Cllr. Brian Riley The ‘renegade’ Councillor read his on-line August Community News, read my grumble of the out of hours working at the Hadleigh Quarry and acted. On the morning of Thursday 6th of August I received an Email from Brian advising that an Enforcement Officer had visited the site. Job sorted? Well for now anyway, thank's Brian. The Corn Exchange (It's future) There was a steady stream of visitors to inspect and form their opinion on what is going to be a talking point for some time to come. What could this building be used for as a community asset? Small group activities that are often lost in larger venues. Music or poetry recitals, rehearsal rooms for the larger societies, Conference’s, discussion groups, meetings of all sorts the list is endless. A Town Museum, Art’s Centre and Gallery, Tourist Information, you probably have your own view. This is an ever expanding town and what an incredible gift to leave for future generations. At what cost? It seems that near to £500k, will take care of everything from purchase to any required renovation. The Town Council appears not unduly fazed by that figure, it is the ongoing cost that certainly would need careful consideration. I would like to think that the Town Councillor who was on duty when I looked in was playing ‘Devil's Advocate’ on that score. Other communities have taken on much bigger projects and created an inheritance for future generations. Do not be negative if your particular interest could not make use of the venue for their own purpose. This is a venue for all and a project on which the Steering Group could at last justify it's existance. Hadleigh United F.C. Like the other sports in Hadleigh this is a well run asset to the town. They recently hosted for the fourth successive year an Academy team from the professional London club, Leyton Orient. Both Colchester and Ipswich pro teams have visited here but it is the East Londoners who rate Hadleigh as one of their most attractive fixtures for both the venue and the welcome given. If any football buff can recall the three previous results I would like to hear. The White Hart It is great to see the restaurant have a new lease of life, run by the former owners of The Smuggler's Restaurant. I will leave the reader to judge the standard by paying a visit as the HCN Editor and I have very differing views on cuisine standards and he invariably prevails! The Observer

Why you should install Solar PV this Winter
Well we have had a fantastic year this year as far as sunshine is concerned, but as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo recently reminded us, our weather is always subject to change and no more so than during the winter months. As the nights draw in thoughts of installing solar PV is probably far from your mind. However, now is a good time to install; let me explain. As 2015 approaches there are 3 things that I can safely predict; Christmas will arrive sooner than we all expect, energy bills will continue to rise Welcome to September……….. and there will that be an end of year surge of solar installations. Born in 1938 in Washington DC Thomas McIntosh was educated at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City where he studied piano, and both choral and orchestral conducting. In 1971 a chance encounter with an old friend brought him to Hadleigh. He bought The Old School as a concert venue, and later added the Headmaster’s house next door which he and his wife Miranda, whom he married in 1982, turned into a cosy home. A series of highly varied, professional and entertaining three-week festivals of concerts took place there each July between 1978 and 2010 when failing health prevented Tom from continuing to run the event. The intimate concert hall added tremendously to the ambience of the performances as did the delightful private garden at the back of the house where patrons enjoyed programme intervals on warm summer evenings. Musical performances also took place at The Old School at other times of the year, most notably at Christmas and on occasions when opera was performed. BBC Radio Suffolk broadcast concerts from The Old School for several consecutive years. Tom travelled extensively during his musical career, performing in more than 70 countries. In later years, he made many trips to Spain, Germany, Malaysia, Japan and most importantly to China, well ahead of his time, forging strong links with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra which he directed on many occasions long before the present more relaxed contacts with that country were in place. He also received the accolade of conducting the world-famous Dresden Staatskapelle Orchestra before the Berlin Wall came down, a privilege rarely afforded to visiting musicians from the West. This unassuming, talented and highly educated man who made his home in Hadleigh for so many years was an adornment to the town. Quiet and softly-spoken, he was a collector of fine modern art, a great cook and a devoted lover of cats. One of them, “Mr Big”, was a familiar feature on concert evenings when he took it upon himself to patrol the seating area, ensuring all was well with the world. Tom’s funeral took place on 5th August at the United Reformed Church, Hadleigh, and was attended by his widow Miranda and many close friends. Everyone present was grateful for the legacy which he leaves behind in Hadleigh, his adopted home. P M Coombes and M H V Mcintosh

Farm to Fork: Engaging in the food story The Angel Inn at Stoke by Nayland is demonstrating its commitment to local, small-scale and artisan producers with a new ‘Farm to Fork’ initiative. Farm to Fork is about knowing where your food comes from, how it’s been grown and raised and reducing the chain from farm to table. Championed by Executive Head Chef, Mark Allen, the initiative was launched in August following the arrival of a Big Green Egg in the kitchen. Mark says, “We’ve always worked hard to source the best British produce at the Angel, but when we were planning our new Big Green Egg menu, we realised we had an opportunity to take this further. “With Farm to Fork we want to directly engage people in the food story from life on the farm to delicious food on their forks. At a time when farming is in the news, The Angel Inn is showcasing the fantastic produce available locally, buying direct to bring the very best ingredients onto the menu. “We are working exclusively with Slow Food producers Lower Dairy Farm in Nayland, to supply 28 day aged beef and rear rare breed pigs for us, with all the pork destined for the Big Green Egg. For me, it’s great to get out of the kitchen, visit and follow the progress of the animals on the farm and know I am sourcing the best possible produce for my kitchen.” With three pubs in the heart of Suffolk villages, Exclusive Inns, a family owned company, understand and are passionate about life in the rural community. Buying locally doesn’t just benefit farmers, it benefits the entire rural economy. Jennifer Taylor of Lower Dairy Farm says, “When Mark approached us, we were delighted to partner with The Angel Inn. It’s fantastic to see Exclusive Inns reinforcing their place at the heart of the village, demonstrating their commitment to small family farms that help create the character of the rural community. “We’ve always been passionate about selling direct from the farm gate – there are so many benefits to the local economy and it’s much more interesting than a supermarket aisle! We will be keeping people updated on the pigs’ progress via the Angel’s blog and have bought Mark a pair of wellies so he can visit the pigs whenever he wants.” Overseen by Mark, Farm to Fork will be launched at The Swan Inn at Monks Eleigh in September with local producers to be announced shortly.
Have a Happy Christmas Helping Hadleigh I am organising a very special event at Christmas and am relying on the wonderful people of Hadleigh to make it go with a swing! So I am going to start with the classic journalistic questions and add detail as we go, if that’s ok with you? What? – A Christmas Dinner and afternoon of entertainment. When? – Christmas Day 2015 Where? – The Ansell Centre in Hadleigh Who? – Residents from Hadleigh and surrounding area who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day Why? – Because we can. How? – With YOUR help. Yes it’s a great idea, and I already have a small team of willing volunteers, but if we’re going to make it happen we’re going to need help, and lots of it! How to raise funds? Local groups like Fidelis and Hadleigh Community Choir have pledged to fund raise. I have already had some very kind offers of financial support from some local businesses. All offers of financial donations, gifts that could be raffled, sponsorship or of organising a fundraising activity gratefully received. Who to invite? Could be singles; could be couples or pairs who will have problems getting Christmas together; all suggestions - which will be treated as confidential - welcome. How to get them there? Could you spare a short time from your Christmas Day to do some driving? I am hoping to hire the community bus. Again, all suggestions welcome. What to cook? We’ve already been promised sausage and chestnut stuffing and free vegetables from local businesses and from an allotment owner. Now ALL we need is the rest of the ingredients – or the money to buy them with. How to cook it? My husband Simon Thompson will act as chief caterer, heartened by the promise of an industrial potato peeler; however, he’ll need a fair bit of help. How to make the venue festive? The Ansell Centre has been booked for Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Day itself so we can set up and decorate, but will need Christmas decorations, crackers, table linens and indeed anything to create a really memorable experience. In addition, I hope to give a small gift to everyone attending the event. Setting the scene will also require a team of willing helpers. What Entertainment? Offers and ideas would be appreciated. I’m not asking anybody to devote their entire Christmas to this event, but if lots of people make a small contribution of time and/or money, together we could make it a memorable day and probably have quite a lot of fun ourselves! Thanking you in advance of all offers of help. Contact details below. Sarah Thompson - landline 01473 829246 mobile 07825 304050 email: sarahtooley10@hotmail.com

On the 1st September 2014 the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance was formed and started work at creating a dementia friendly community in Hadleigh. In February 2015 we were formally recognised as the first town in Suffolk to be awarded this status by the Alzheimer’s Society. Our key aims were set for 2015. We were looking to create 20 dementia champions, 2000 dementia friends, 24 dementia friendly businesses, create a list of activities that were dementia friendly, shout about our success and create a website to sign post the community to dementia friendly activities, businesses and organisations. We are delighted to report that as of the end of July we have made 791 dementia friends, have 12 dementia champions delivering dementia friends information sessions around the community groups include, the Baptist Church, Ansell Centre Volunteers, Paddy and Scott’s. 15 local businesses have committed to becoming dementia friendly organisations. Regular press can be found in the community news, Mercury and East Anglian about the success of our work. Fundraising events have been well supported by the Community with a Gospel Concert, Digital Cinema of Still Alice, Coffee mornings and so much more. In September 2015 the Alliance will launch a dementia friendly activity programme that sign posts those living with or caring for someone with dementia to dementia friendly activity around the town. This includes Otago, Lunch clubs, coffee mornings and so much more. Our website development is underway and we hope to go live with www.hadleighdementiafriends.co.uk in January 2016. To celebrate our first year you will find volunteers at the Alliance all over the Town during September. Embracing Change Most of us don’t choose change. We get comfortable with our routines, our lives, our friends, the food we eat. Changes can be a source of frustration, fear and stress—we prefer the security of what we know. But change is unavoidable, and how we react to it determines the outcome. People who are non-active resist change and choose to remain in denial – “If I don’t address the issue, it’s not really there”. Some are reactive, make decisions without having all the facts and make a knee-jerk reaction but find out later it’s not really right for them. Ideally, being proactive and positive will enable you to feel more in control. And the more we feel in control over a situation, the less stress and frustration we feel. It doesn’t matter if it’s a divorce, a career move or change of diet—when we take charge, we feel more comfortable and the process is more rewarding. Easy to say, but how do you choose to be proactive when it’s so easy to freak out or hide under the covers? Acknowledge that change is part of life - Nothing would exist without change. It’s inevitable. Accept your emotions - Allow yourself time to sort through them, don’t rush it. Rethink the situation to see the positive – start dreaming about the possibilities, how you’ll feel when you’re in your dream house, job or that fabulous dress you’ve got your eye on! Take action - decisions, not conditions, determine the process. Embrace change, choose to be proactive, be brave and take the steps to move forward and trust that your life will change for the better. Remember, every pot needs to be replanted now and again if it’s going to grow. You can get the body you want, and like thousands of others you could soon be saying “I wish I’d found Cambridge sooner!” Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has over 6 years’ experience so, for individual help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. Encouraging the Joy of your Child’s Relationship with Music A baby’s relationship with sound actually starts in the womb, at just 15 weeks they can hear everything (albeit under water!) and, once born, at just two months old infants can even remember brief melodies. Research shows that early exposure to music can help promote critical listening skills, language and literacy, creativity and coordination. Learning rhymes and actions helps your child learn their first words. Music will help teach them about patterns and sequence, and about rhythm, beat and tone. Children with a strong sense of beat are more likely to read well and do better at maths for example. On a social level too, there are many benefits for your child. Music gives children a way to express themselves which encourages their self-confidence and self-esteem. At Sing & Stretch children don’t just listen to music, but become involved with the act of making music alongside other children and having a lot of fun doing so! If you’d like to find out more come and enjoy a first FREE session of ‘Sing & Stretch’ .With action songs, instruments, puppets and parachute, a fun and stimulating morning is guaranteed. Why ‘custody’ of a child does not exist In 1991, the Children Act 1989 came into force and introduced the terms ‘residence’ and ‘contact’. The term residence refers to where a child will live and the term contact refers to when a child will spend time with the nonresident parent. This brought an end to the use of the terms ‘custody’ and ‘access’. More recently, the Children and Families Act 2014 came into effect and replaced the terms ‘residence’ and ‘contact’ with ‘child arrangements’ which set out where a child should live and who they should spend time with. This new Act attempts to further distance itself from the inflammatory terms such as ‘custody battles’ and ‘obtaining access’ which are still commonly used within family law situations. One of the aims of the Children Act 1989 was to remove the hostility associated with family law proceedings and to eradicate the idea of having winners and losers. Its focus was to ensure that any decision made in respect of a child is made with the child’s welfare as the paramount consideration. The introduction of Child Arrangement Orders in 2014 focuses on removing the litigious terms previously used and to encourage parents to have a more flexible approach in regard to the arrangements for their children. The terms ‘custody’ and ‘access’ are often used in newspapers and television programmes when a family dispute is being referred to. As a consequence, these terms continue to be used as it is still widely believed to be the correct terminology. Not only are these terms outdated but the use of them maintains the idea of having winners and losers in family proceedings and that the child is the prize at the end, which is exactly what the Children Act 1989 wanted to stamp out, twenty four years ago. Daren Vythilingum, family solicitor at Bates Wells and Braithwaite says, “I believe that whilst the media consistently use the terms ‘custody’ and ‘access’ when referring to family disputes, these terms will continue to be used by the general public. Family law has evolved a lot since the terms ‘custody’ and ‘access’ were in place and the more recent legislation aims to bring a more non-confrontational approach when decisions are being made regarding the arrangements for a child. Unless the media recognises and adopts the changes, it is regrettable that terms such as ‘custody’ and ‘access’ will continue to be used on a regular basis” If you require advice or assistance in regard to a family related issue, please contact Daren Vythilingum on 01787 242824 or by email: darenvythilingum@bwblegal.com

Kersey Mill Newsletter Works have continued on the exterior of the mill, the Lucum has had facia and weather boarding repaired and redecorated, the Lucum is the section at the front of the mill that extends forward and away from the main building with a trap door, its purpose is to enable sacks of grain to be lifted straight off the cart to the upper floor via the sack hoist. The sacks of grain had to be lifted to the top floor to allow gravity to help with the process of delivering the grain to the grind stones. The sack hoist lifts the sacks of grain using a series of pulleys, gears and a chain, a process which is all powered by the water wheel. At the top the grain was then emptied into storage bins or directly into chutes which are fed down to the stones to be ground into flour. The wheel house has this month also received new weather boarding and a new coat of paint and looks so much better for it. The remaining windows have been sympathetically repaired and glazed. At the time of writing we have 2 further windows that require some rot removing, repairs to the sills all before repainting then we can happily claim that all windows and glazing is complete throughout the mill. Photographs show some of the traditional repair methods used on the joinery The mill will again be hosting Santa’s Workshop this year, an extremely well attended event where children help Santa and his elves prepare for Christmas all in aid of raising funds for the restoration of the mill, due to popular demand tickets can be reserved now on 01473 829317. Today we have a group of artists that have set up on the front lawns with easels and brushes to paint the beautifully dazzling white mill with its fresh painted and repaired exterior. The plans for the future repairs to the interior main structure and flooring are very much in hand but more on this next month. Next open day is September 27th 10.30am – 4pm when the mill will be open and the water wheel turning so come along and see the mill before the next phase of repair is underway.

Staff and pupils at Ipswich High School were celebrating a bumper crop of results once again this year with a 100% pass rate. Half of the students achieved A*-B Grades and over a quarter of candidates achieved straight A*/As. Oona Carlin, Head said "we are very proud of the girls' results and especially that a number of our students are going on to study fascinating degrees in traditionally male-dominated subjects including Geology, Anthropology, Aeronautical Engineering and Product Design. Future success will be driven by their individual passions, and Ipswich High has been a spring board for these girls to pursue a wide variety of careers in the future, whatever the gender bias." The school's Religious Studies results were particularly outstanding with a 100% A* success rate. Erica Belton, 18 (pictured left with Head of RS, Claire Chandler-Mears) who achieved two A*s and two As is thrilled to be heading to Edinburgh to study Theology. Erica is a passionate film-maker and hopes to combine her four year degree course with the impressive Arts scene in Scotland's university town. Fellow RS student, Imogen Hubner (pictured right) is heading to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge to study Anthropology and credits her RS studies with sparking her interest in subject. Subject highlights include: 100% A* in Art, 100% A* in Religious Studies, 100% A in Latin , 75% A & B in History, 70% A* & A in Maths.

On Sunday, 2nd August, Hadleigh girl Laura Crighton (nee Gowers), pictured right, took on her biggest cycling challenge to date and successfully completed the 2015 RideLondon-Surrey 100 to raise money for St. Elizabeth Hospice in memory of her dear friend Dawn Blake, who lost her battle with cancer last year. The annual closed road event in the capital was made famous by the 2012 London Olympics’ road race including Box Hill and Leith Hill. “One of the most amazing experiences of my life and I am so glad I did it. To go from cycling 10 miles to a very challenging 100 miles in 18 months just proves that anything is possible. I love cycling, it’s a great way to meet people and keep fit, saves money on fuel and car parking! I would recommend anyone to get on their bike and give it a go. Cycling past the sights of London was amazing, Tower of London, The Strand, Harrods, Natural History Museum, the V&A to name a few, heading out of London through Richmond Park.” Laura started cycling early 2014 with her friend, Amelia Richardson, on her old mountain bike on short 10mi routes with coffee and cake stops, and gradually increased the distance every week and worked towards the first Bury St. Edmunds’ Women on Wheels (WOW) event in June which was a 20 miler. After that, Laura started to join Breeze Champion Ann Williamson on Breeze Rides which happened on Saturday mornings once or twice a month with routes covering 15-25mi at chatting pace. Breeze is a British Cycling programme to encourage more women into cycling and aims to help thousands of women feel confident and comfortable about going on a ride, meeting likeminded ladies. The Breeze Rides were growing in popularity as is Laura’s cycling bug, and met many more ladies who loves cycling and chatting on her cycling adventures. Laura has since ridden the Newmarket Sportive (44mi) in April, WOW Ride (50mi) and Haverhill Sportive (60mi) in May and Bury’s Wheelers (75mi) in July as part of her training for RideLondon. With the success of Breeze, Amelia, Ann and Laura started a Facebook riding group in addition to Breeze to help other ladies to start their cycling adventures and currently have over 70 ladies actively involved. Laura has risen over £1000 to date for St. Elizabeth Hospice and it is not too late to make a donation www.virginmoneygiving.com/lauracrighton1

SKy Watch The Andromeda Galaxy I hope everyone got out last month and saw the Perseids meteor shower? A big" Thank you", to Michaela Dade for giving me the heads-up on the clearing skies. Onto September, and the skies are darkening more rapidly this month as we head towards the Autumnal equinox on the 23rd. This is the point in our orbit where our planet sits bolt upright before we begin to tilt away from the Sun, meaning that the Sun appears lower in our skies and the days shorten in length until we reach the Winter Solstice just before Christmas. So, back to the September challenge; the most distant object in the heavens you can see with just your eyes alone; The Andromeda galaxy or M31. If you are in a dark location with Moon-free skies you can spot it as a small looking misty patch in the location indicated by the map above. Turn a pair of 10x50 binoculars onto it and it will appear as the image above and its true identity becomes apparent, a galaxy. Sadly from our position in space, we see this object edge-on, if it was sideways-on we'd see a spectacular pinwheel looking object that would simply mesmerise us. So what exactly are we looking at? Well, this galaxy is the largest within the local group. Our Milky Way galaxy contains around 400 billion stars but the Andromeda galaxy contains 1 trillion stars. It also lies at a vast distance from us, some 2.5 million light years. It's hard to fathom light taking this amount of time to reach our retinas. If you are lucky enough to have a telescope you'll see 2 fainter fuzzy objects to either side of the main galaxy, these are satellite galaxies that are gravitationally bound to the Andromeda galaxy. We can determine this because the Andromeda galaxy contains stars that appear to have been stripped from the smaller one’s, a kind of cosmic cannibalism if you will. The Andromeda galaxy is a blueshift object too. This means that the galaxy is approaching our Milky Way - and quickly too. It's approaching at 68 miles a second and in relation to our Sun at 190 miles a second as it orbits around the centre of our galaxy at 140 miles per second, these combinations mean a collision between the two galaxies will take place in around 3.75 billion years time. Our Sun will be in its death throes by this point, but if mankind is still in existence, what a show it'll be. The collision could also eject our solar system from the Milky Way altogether, but whatever the outcome, the two galaxies will merge to create a super galaxy of epic proportions. Certainly food for thought as you gaze upon this seemingly insignificant patch of hazy light. Until next month, lear skies to all. Any questions, please contact me at the email address below. Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Hadleigh and District Gardening Club's August meeting was a coach trip to visit East Ruston Old Vicarage and dawned on a miserable, drizzly morning which, thankfully, cheered up well before we got aboard the coach and thereafter stayed that way and was, in fact, a rather lovely day. It is so well known and a garden many had visited before but for myself I was a little disapppointed as it didn't seem to have the 'wow' factor I had remembered but I think I was in the minority. The leafy walks and hidden nooks and crannies were, and still are, delightful so I'm not sure why I felt the way I did. It is a garden well supplied with seating sited in delightful settings, which is great for those of us who find being on ones feet for too long causes aches and pains - me! I do hope everyone has had a successful and bounteous summer in their gardens and is thinking of planning for the new season which, in gardening terms, starts about now! What shall we plant, leave out or experiment with? For me, as I seldom water, salad crops have been awful but, once again, all the peas did fantastically well but the beans and brassicas were not brilliant and I have had to weaken and water them a few times. We will be back to our usual day, time and place for our first meeting of the Autumn season - 7.30 Town Hall dining room on the second Monday of the month. For our meeting on the 14th of September Dave Fryer will be giving a talk on bonsai. Look forward to seeing you all then. Ruth Allen

Fidelis Activity News Suffolk Police & Crime Commissioner: For many Fidelis members the precise role of a Police and Crime Commissioner has always been something of a mystery. When the countrywide elections for this post took place in November 2012, the turnout was very low. Not surprising then that the turnout was high to hear Tim Passmore, the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner, speak to the group about this newly created function. By the end of the evening the audience had Liz Wilson a much clearer idea of the scope and and Tim Passmore breadth of his work with the police and within the community. The final questions and answers session took care of any other queries. All present felt they were much better informed in time for the next elections in May 2016. Lunch Bunch: In anticipation of some sunny weather, The Boathouse at Dedham was the choice of venue for our summer diners. Happily, they were not disappointed and a large group enjoyed a tasty meal at this very busy riverside restaurant. The foodies opted for the ‘light lunch’ menu which varied from cooked pasta and meat dishes to an uncomplicated salad. The ladies coped admirably with the long pause between courses by catching up on all their news and taking in the idyllic scenery outside. They resisted the temptation, after their lunch and coffee, to hire a boat and row along the Stour, opting for the scenic journey back to Hadleigh instead. Jan Devey

Personal Thoughts I recently visited East Ruston Old Vicarage with the Garden Club. This is near Stalham in the Norfolk Broads. It is a huge garden (32 acres), but it is split into lots of garden rooms by hedges of various sorts. I think that it is one of the best gardens in the country, and is gorgeous to look at, but when I visit a garden like this I try to find features which I could adapt to my garden in order to improve it. At East Ruston this is difficult because everything is on a grand scale, and just one of their large planted pots would be too big for my garden, and would totally fill some of the small gardens on Hadleigh's new housing estates. I have included a picture of one such pot. However I did spot one idea that I could use. There were several places where they had planted beds or pots with two different coloured flowers of different heights intermingled, and these were effective, and something that I would not have done. I would have planted the taller plants in the centre, with the shorter ones in a ring around them. In my garden The sweet peas are now over and have now been removed to give a view to the bed of dahlias which are now flowering well. The tomatoes are now in full production and we have plenty of french and runner beans. Open Gardens 3 September Feeringbury Manor, Coggeshall Road. Feering, CO5 9RB 13 September Bays Farm, Earl Stonham, IP14 5HU 13 September Lucy Redman Garden 6 The Village, Rushbrooke, IP30 0ER 13 September Spencers, Tilbury Road, Great Yeldham, CO9 4JG Weather Records In July at Kersey there was 78.6 mm (3.1") of rain, which is 50% more than the average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of July was 150.9 mm (5.9") which is almost exactly the average figure. This has theoretically made up for the dry June, but although plants are now growing well my soil still seems too dry. In July the maximum temperature was 28 Cel (82F) and the minimum temperature was 9 Cel (48F) which are both close to the monthly average. Hints In September it is time to enjoy the last of our Summer. Temperatures start to drop, and unless we have been very good at looking after them our annuals will be well past their best. Nice days provide a good chance to tidy up before the Winter Does your garden still have plants to keep it interesting in September. Dahlias and Geraniums (pelargoniums) will keep up their colourful display until frosts occur. Often around here that is not until early November. Other useful plants for this period of the year are the various Michaelmas Daisies, the hardy chrysanthemums, anemone japonica and the Sedums like the variety "Autumn Joy". Have a look and see if there are places where you could use some of these plants to improve your September garden next year. There are also some bulbs which flower at this time including some varieties of cyclamen, and the Autumn Crocus (Colchicum). Some of the later will flower happily indoors without even planting them in soil. Planted in the garden they will last for years, but need to be planted where the foliage in Spring will not be a nuisance. September is the time at which bulbs appear in garden centres, and there are a marvellous range available nowadays to brighten our houses and gardens. The range of colours and flower shapes in daffodils seems to be increasing all the time, and I plan to add a few new varieties to my collection this year. John Rye

A ball in memory of Suffolk School girl Daisy Brooks has raised over £20,000. Local businessman Charlie Phillips from The Jolly Meat Company in Hadleigh together with family and friends organised the very successful fundraising event which helped drive total fundraising efforts to over £200,000.00. On 3rd May 2014 Daisy Brooks was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Just six months after her diagnosis Daisy sadly passed away the evening of her 7th birthday. As a family friend Charlie was keen to help support the fundraising efforts in Daisy's memory and support the valuable work being carried out by Funding Neuro, the charity dedicated to researching a cure and developing treatments for conditions which effect the brain, and in particular this rare condition suffered by Daisy. Charlie was overwhelmed by the level of local support, having roped in a number of other butchers and suppliers in the area to help supply meat for the 180 guests to enjoy as part of a three course feast put together by Charlie and his team at the Jolly Meat Company and local outside catering company GRH Catering and equipment hire from Henry Events. The ball was also supported by Steve from The Queens Head in Layham who kindly helped supply a bar for the event. Charlie Phillips commented “Months of planning and preparation went into the orchestrating of this successful event, and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped support us. This is a charity very close to my heart, and knowing that the money raised will have a significant impact on the work being carried out by this charity is amazing”. Frederick Makin - 26 September email 1915: hadleighww1@gmail.com facebook : Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project http://www.hadleighww1.com.) One year after Lord Kitchener’s iconic RBL,“Britons George Street, Hadleigh, IP7 2BB Post : Hadleigh Wants You” appeal, the first of Kitchener’s New Armies were trained and ready for service. The purpose of this recruitment campaign at the very start of the war, was to create ‘Service’ battalions. Each man would enlist for new ‘general service’ terms of three years or the duration of the war (whichever was the longer) and would agree to be sent to serve wherever the army needed them. Kitchener was keen on recruitment organised from central government rather than the local (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day) associations that formed the territorial force. Wed 1 Sept Reporting on the “desperate battle on August 12th” involving the In Hadleigh the majority of recruitment was to 5th Suffolks in the Gallipoli Peninsula, the newspaper notes that “the horrors the territorials; in particular the 5th Suffolks of war have been brought very near to many homes in the towns and villages who at this time were in Gallipoli. of West Suffolk”. GREAT WAR NEWS SEPTEMBER 1915
Frederick Hockey was killed in action at Hooge and lays buried in Brandhoek Military Cemetery on the road between Ypres and Popperhinge. In his memory, his fiancée Miss Whatling daughter of Hadleigh’s police inspector, presented St Mary’s Church with two tall candlestick holders. These remain in use today, standing on either side of the high altar. When the British Expeditionary Force went to France and Belgium in August 1914, part of Kitchener’s strategy was to hold back some officers and men to form an experienced nucleus for the new armies. One such man was Albert Victor Mulley. Mulley was born in Hadleigh, originally lived in Station Road and later in Place Farm Angel Street. Before the Great War he had served in the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade including spending time in India. In September 1915 he was with the 9th Rifle Brigade, part of the 14th (Light) Division of K1 - the first of Kitchener’s New Armies. In late September 1915 the 9th Rifles where caught up in the action around Hooge where Lance Sergeant Albert Mulley was killed in action. He is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. The major offensive of the Battle of Loos during September 1915 was on a broad six mile front in the French coal mining and industrial area extending from the La Bassee Canal and south to the town of Loos. This action began early on the 25th with the disastrous first use of gas by the British. During the first two days of the attack Lieutenant Thomas Gordon Peacock of the 8th (Service) Royal Berks Regiment and Private Frederick Charles Makin of 8th (Service) East Kent Regiment both fell. Wed 15 Sept The threat of air raids have meant that the gas lights in the streets of Hadleigh have been turned off and “the recent dark nights have caused some contretemps and amusing happenings. Collisions on the pavements and tumbles from them into watery gutters have been frequent and several persons have been involuntarily embraced by others groping their way along.” Wed 15 Sept The extent of the Gallipoli tragedy is still limited as “up to the present time seventeen men are still reported missing”. Wed 29 Sept At the evening Intercession Service held in the parish church Dean Carter announced the sad news he had received that morning respecting the death of Mr F H Hockey, the church organist, killed by a shell.

From the Sheep Pen The sheep pen is empty now that the last of the ‘bunting’ flock is decorating the High Street and the big Celotex boys are posing in various locations around the town. It took over a thousand fabric sheep and as many hours by several townsfolk to complete these adornments but what a worthwhile community effort it has been. Special thanks to the stitchers and to the two men with ladders, Keith Gardner & Ken McGhee, who, together with their support team, kindly gave their Sunday mornings and a great deal of patience to string up the cheery little beasties. Since your last visit to this enclosure our ovine friends have been talked about by academics, sung about by the town choir and portrayed on the silver screen by Hollywood in Hadleigh. Our sincere thanks to all involved in those three successful and most enjoyable events in August. It’s hard to believe that this month will mark the end of the celebrations and what a finale we have planned for you. On 12th September there will be a Medieval Feast in St Mary's Church. Contact details below. The’ Winter Warmer’ Charity Fashion Show will take place in the Guildroom on 15th September at 7.30pm. The money raised while you are enjoying the evening will support the Health Centre’s Charity - The Hadleigh and Boxford Charitable Trust. wage would have a considerable effect. Work was also taking place, in conjunction with the district and borough councils, on a paper for the Cabinet Office on devolution, to be submitted by the beginning of September. It was noted that Colin Noble, Leader of SCC, was visiting various towns and villages in Suffolk. He was due to visit Hadleigh in November and the planned venue was Morrison’s car park; the Chairman said he felt Mr Noble should meet the public in the town centre instead. In response to a question about the ‘Positive Choices’ programme, Cllr Jones said the Positive Choices Team had to operate in areas where there was a critical mass; however, he would look into the possibility of a visiting service. • Speeding A note had been delivered to all residents of Upper Street requesting their help in gathering information; responses were already coming in. With regard to the proposed moving of the 30mph speed limit sign near the Marquis, and a new village sign, Councillors and the Clerk were due to meet SCC Highways in August. • Audit of public areas Councillors had met with Babergh and their contractor and some work had already been carried out. The parked car on Brett Green was still there; the Chairman would follow up with Babergh. • Defibrillators The Clerk would contact the East Anglian Daily Times again to try and publicise the defibrillator in Lower Layham and the plan to install another one in Upper Layham. • Marquis of Cornwallis Following Babergh’s approval of the planning application in respect of the new frontage railings and entrance piers, and pergola, which had not appeared to take into account the comments submitted by the Parish Council, the Clerk had written to the Planning department to request feedback. • Community email group Currently 81 households were participating in the community email group. The Chairman prepared a small flyer explaining the scheme to prospective participants which councillors would use to encourage sign-up. From the Layham Archive The appeal last month for any photographs of social events that have taken place in the village in the past has resulted in Kelvin Avis kindly supplying an old post card from his personal collection. It shows what the photographer titles “Layham Flower Show in 1921”. Layham Archive is fortunate to have a copy of the programme for the Saturday 30th July 1921 “Horticultural Show” which is certain to be the same event. The programme is set out below and includes some very interesting content. First – note the location of the event. It was held on “The Green Piece” with its entrance off the Shelley Road. This was, at the time, an area of pasture immediately behind Netherbury Hall and the Dower House. It is now subsumed into the large ploughed field that runs right up to the track leading to Water House (where onions have been grown this year). The day must have been quite a highlight of the year with the Hadleigh Town Band in attendance and children’s sports making up part of the entertainment.
The classes of competition and schedule of prizes in Division I was “open to all Cottagers resident in Layham”. The definition of “Cottager” will have been clear to the residents of Layham and probably meant those living in rented or tied cottages. There is a fascinating range of competitions – note number 5 – “One root of maincrop potatoes (for weight) to be dug by the exhibitor in the presence of two of the committee”. Then, the distinction in numbers 36 and 37 between “floor” baked bread and “tin” baked bread would suggest that some of the cottagers will still using traditional solid fuel bread ovens – there used to be one in the room next to the public bar of the Marquis of Cornwallis – it will be surprising if it has not been retained during the renovations. Finally, number 45 challenges children to make “the largest collection of Queen Wasps, caught before June 1st, 1921”.
How would we react to such a challenge for children today? Division II of the schedule invites the participation of “all Owners and Occupiers in Layham” which suggests that the residents of the bigger houses could take part in these classes. The emphasis here is on flowers rather than vegetables. The division closes with (number 21) “Best Fowl, dressed for table”. One wonders how such an exhibit might fare on a hot July day when exhibits were “not to be removed before 9pm”! Division III is again “for Cottagers only”. The practical need to make things last, at a time of depression, is reflected in number 4 “Best Darned Sock or Stocking” and number 5 “Best Mended Garment”. The seriousness with which this whole event was approached is reflected in Rule number 4 “Any doubt as to the genuineness of any Exhibit shall be decided by the Judges or Committee visiting the Exhibitor’s garden”.

the Police will be happy to advise -after all, they would prefer to not issue parking tickets and avoid all the time it takes to process those. The solution to parking issues is already available. Please use the car parks in the town -they are free for large amounts of time and when long stays are required the prices are reasonable. I would welcome any contact from anyone with a view on traffic issues in Hadleigh and parking in particular. Contact me at AJ4Hadleigh@outlook.com A. J. Boxford, Hadleigh Town Councillor
Dear Sir,
Dear Sir,
I refer to "News From the Station" in August HCN and would like to thank PCSO Bignell for mentioning me. I am grateful to Julia for allowing me to accompany her and it was a very interesting and enlightening experience. There are a few personal observations that I'd like to mention as a result of my walkabout with Julia. Firstly, our local Police do a fantastic job and they deserve our support and respect for the work they do on our behalf. Therefore with regard to parking, please accept with good grace if you are issued with a ticket or given a friendly warning - remember it is you who are in the wrong and not the Officer. Secondly please pay heed to the parking signs and restrictions -they are there for a good reason. I believe it is also important to show consideration for other road users and indeed pedestrians. Poor parking has a knock on effect; for example, parking partially on kerbs and pavements restricts access for pedestrians and could potentially affect people's safety. At school run times, as a matter of common courtesy, please don't restrict anyone's access to their property. A lot of what I saw when I walked around the town with Julia, came down to a lack of common sense. If you are in any doubt about parking restrictions in the town,
Firstly, I must say thank you to Jess Poole (Community News July ‘15) for highlighting the biggest challenge facing the high street today and for bringing it to the attention of Community News readers. Certainly a thought provoking piece, I wondered where these derelict, charity shop filled, unsociable ghetto like Suffolk high streets are (ironically even Google Earth couldnt find them) but I will come back that. But before we start to believe we are all destined to receive our 'items of choice' via delivery men in vans or even by drone, lets get some perspective. The world is an evolving place, us humans change things all the time - wasn't that long ago we all got about on foot or on horseback you know. Those in the know, know that retail or sales as a whole is a competitive game, with competition coming in many forms - it isn't new and you have to adapt accordingly to survive. But we are not seeing the end of the high street - research is predicting that despite the behavourial changes and benefits that online shopping has introduced, the high street will be responsbile for 9 out of 10 retail sales as early as 2020 as the evolving experience of shopping takes on a new non transactional driven, more research, lifestyle and social based experience, ironically as a result of the online market which without the high street would see sales decline (it is not without it's own challenges either) as the two mediums complement one another. But that aside, for the next 5 years anyway, things are changing but as ever it need'nt be so glum. The changes are good, no? Given that Jess’ piece appeared in the ‘Hadleigh’ community news it will appear that one of the aforementioned high streets is in fact Hadleigh's High Street. No wonder I couldnt recognise it because it bears no relation to the truth. Yes there are charity shops but that's where the similarities end. To read what is the "heart of the community" in such light was truly saddening and frustrating. The high street is "Hadleigh", is it not? As a new edition to the high street, I wish Hadleigh would wake up to what a great town it is and the wealth of opportunity laid out in front of it, which I for one certainly recognise - and then I think some others already have too. Maybe, we just need to decide what to do and get on with it. Looking forward again to the future of retail, yes there are many factors effecting some larger towns today, most economic and environmental, Ipswich being an example. But is this where the future and the opportunity for high streets like Hadleigh’s lies? to fit into the evolving retail landscape I referred too in the earlier paragraph - where we can offer a truly rewarding experience, an interaction and get back to offering a service. A destination that people will visit and acknowledge it's worth. We are sociable tactile creatures by nature let's not forget. Or shall we let it die as Jess' piece predicts. Sean Garnham, owner of Hall Street, 99 Hadleigh High Street and Hall Street Long Melford

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (PG) After almost two years since we screened the first film this is a welcome return to most of the original cast. However, the hotel is now full up with its long term residents and the co-managers have a dream of expansion which involves a visit to California to present their plans to a hotel magnate. Their request is met with a promise that a hotel inspector will visit unannounced to evaluate the project. The talented and charming cast - Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Maggie Smith, Celia Imre and Ronald Pickup all excel in their roles that fit them like gloves. In short 122 minutes of pure English pleasure! Friday 25th September at 7.30 pm
Selma (12) In complete contrast SELMA is based on the life of Martin Luther King, and chronicles the tumultuous three month period in 1965 when he led a dangerous campaign to secure equal rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. SELMA has been described as a scorching civil rights masterpiece and David Oyelowa is tremendous in his portrayal of the civil rights leader. He is well supported by Oprah Winfrey as Annie Lee Cooper. The film was nominated for Best Picture at the 2015 Oscars. During both presentations we will be selling our ever popular refreshments – teas, coffee, fruit juice and choc ices – milk or plain. Admission to both films is £3.50 on the door.

Dear Sir, I write to thank all those who took part in and attended the Town’s VJ Day 70th anniversary commemoration on Saturday 15th August. The event also commemorated the 100th anniversary of Hadleigh’s blackest day, the 12th August 1915 where 16 Hadleigh men died in battle at Gallipoli. The ‘Sunset’ ceremony which included readings, poems and music, was a fitting tribute to the memory of those who served. Guest of Honour was local veteran, Mr Stanley Oxford, who as a young man spent three and half years in india & Burma during WW2. I would also like to give a special thank you to; the Mayor Councillor Richard Whiting who led the wreath laying and read a poem. Mr Michael Mann, Councillor’s Sue Monk and Angela Wiltshire for their readings. The Stowmarket Boys Brigade Buglers, the Hadleigh Sea Scouts and Simon and Val Haines who stepped in at the very last minute to play a musical piece during the wreath laying. The George (Public House) for the loan of their PA system, Jane Basham for the electricity supply and the Ansell Centre for the chairs. Finally I would like to thank the Hadleigh & District Branch Committee of the Royal British Legion for their continued support. Mark Brennan Chairman, Hadleigh & District Branch, Royal British Legion
Dear Sir, After putting quite a bit of my spare time to help run events in Hadleigh with Entertainments Committee, HADS, Year Of The Sheep, Town council, Steering Group etc and I have also been on the Chamber of Commerce for the town too but nothing ever changes. I thought that Hadleigh should be going forward as its getting bigger but it seems to offer less and less. Whatever events I help put on cost quite a bit of money and it saddens me that we have to hire stages to hold shows and pantos.
Other villages like Bildeston, Elmsett, Whatfield have Village Halls with stages available so why is it Hadleigh has lots of ‘rooms’ to hire but nothing with ‘something ready to go’ like the above. Talk about the Brett works and what could go there has been on the books for ages but nothings happened. The Town Council recently opened up the Corn Exchange to look around which I thought could work as a venue but it wouldn't. What about East House? Every day I walk past there on my way to work and it saddens me to see all the weeds growing at the side taller then me. Plus a short while back work was happening with East House to repair the floor but yet again for the past 3 months the doors have yet again been sealed shut with the alarm randomly going off during the night. For years I have tried to save East House to try and get it open again but I have given up as I never get anywhere. I know I'm an independent person but I feel I go above and beyond and out my way to put entertainment in Hadleigh of course all as a volunteer. After seeing the results of the town survey and also talking to people maybe a new hall is needed for Hadleigh or the grand hall updated and kitted out with lighting sound and stage so it can be used for concerts, bands and shows and make more use of it rather then us keep hiring in stages and setting up and packing away equipment away. Trev Clarke

Kind donations were received of ÂŁ111 towards the Alliances aims of creating a dementia friendly community. Working together we can create a dementia friendly Hadleigh. Thank you everyone, Tracey Loynds, Chair of HDAA
Dear Sir, I have heard a number of people in Hadleigh saying how concerned they are about the height of the grass in our parks and verges. Some people are unhappy as they consider that Babergh is not doing its job of cutting these areas frequently enough, compared with previous years. May I take this opportunity to explain the new approach Babergh is taking to this and the thinking behind it. We may not all agree with it, but at least you will understand what is going on and make any representations or suggestions on an informed basis. Babergh’s Public Realm department have provided me with the following information: I am informed that in previous years the council operated a rigid grass cutting regime where grass was cut to a frequency and a specified number of times per year. This approach offered very little room for manoeuvre, and with budgets being squeezed, something had to change. This year Babergh is managing grass in a different way; a flexible approach has been taken where grass cutting is taking place as-and-when it is required with fewer men and machines. Each area is looked at as an ‘individual space’, receiving cuts at the right number of times for that location, or maybe being allowed to become open meadowland, where appropriate. This allows for the service to be directed where it is needed with the benefit of saving money too. Understandably, a new way of working brings with it new issues, and the biggest challenge Babergh’s Public Realm Department have faced is trying to manage the height of grass during growth spurts, as the grass grows quicker than they can get round to cutting it with a reduced resource. Babergh is also trying out a new approach to managing grass and considering whether it is necessary to cut some areas of grass as frequently as before. Two examples of this in Hadleigh are recently adopted open spaces off Malyon Road and Oxford Drive which have been left to grow as meadow grass this year, allowing nature to thrive in areas which would otherwise offer little benefit to residents if the grass was cut short. Another is not collecting grass cuttings after mowing along the riverside at Bridge Street and Corks Lane – Babergh’s Public Realm department says, this has saved time and money while still making the area look well kept. Yours sincerely, Kathryn Grandon Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Grey clouds gathered above and the rain came down, yet over three hundred friends and supporters rolled up for the SESAW Open Day at the end of July. A big thank you to everyone who helped raise over £3,300 at the Dog Show, Fete, BBQ and Refreshments marquee. Even Jazz Galore braved the weather to entertain us! Open Day aside, my canine pals and I have enjoyed the lovely summer, unlike a three year old LakelandX that has been with us since May. Buster is a tiny bit stupid, he kennel guards and sems very fierce in there, but he is not like that at all. Everyone passes by, thinking he would kill his neighbour but once out, they happily go for a walk together. He’s getting quite depressed watching all the others come in and go before him. He would be good, probably as the only pet and with older children ‘cause he wants all the fuss. Come and see Buster but ask someone to get him out of the kennel and give him a chance. I’ll be in trouble with Ollie (the Black) Cat if I don’t also mention the many cats longing for new people to own - that’s what he said! Hopefully they will leave us sooner than a family of ferals, homed last month after waiting at Sesaw for nearly four years. The fundraisers are back with a £1 sale at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh on Saturday 26th September, 11am to 2pm. This is the same day as the Grand Finale of the Year of the Sheep so pop in to pick up a bargain and enjoy refreshments on your way to or from St. Mary’s Church. It’s nearly time for Mum’s evening rounds but I’m guarding the computer until someone emails this article for me. Questions and Answers with Suffolk County Council
HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL
CHRISTMAS EVENT
Roger Young and Sue Monks attended a SCC meeting on 17th July and set out below are their questions to SCC, which residents may find of interest.
This year’s Christmas Street Lighting will take place on Sunday 6th December 2015 from 3 til 6pm in the Market Place
Question: from Sue Monks “Can the Council please provide an update on the discussions held late 2014 in relation to the need for increased school places in areas where housing development has already increased and is anticipating an increase. Bearing in mind the recognised shortfall in capital funding received by the Council and the awareness of the need to negotiate CIL obligations with developers which in turn could result in reduced growth in our County, what plans have the Council in place for the additional funding required, to provide adequate schooling for the County's children, in particular Hadleigh, where we have a High School currently turning children away from the feeder schools as it is over subscribed?” Answer from Councillor Lisa Chambers, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills “The Education and Learning Infrastructure Plan which was presented to Cabinet in December 2014, and sets out our strategic approach to School Place Planning. We are committed to working with schools, academy sponsors and our partners in District and Borough Councils to ensure that we have enough school capacity to meet the need for places across Suffolk, and so fulfil our key statutory duty of providing a school place for each child. We are closely monitoring the situation in Hadleigh, and in other places. The catchment population for the High School has always been quite erratic with a tendency to spike for a year or two before dropping once again. This year we are seeing similar numbers to what we would have done in and around 2011, although this is expected to fall again in 2017. Hadleigh High School is an academy and therefore has its own admission policy. As such the school has chosen to put siblings as the highest ranking above looked after children. In the years where the catchment area population has been lower, places may have been offered to more out of catchment pupils. This can have a knock on effect for those years which have a high level of catchment pupils as this means a sibling of an out of catchment pupil now attending the school, who was offered a place as there were places available at that time, will now have priority over a catchment applicant. Hadleigh High School is a popular school and attracts children from nearby catchment areas. The school could look in the future at changing its criteria to all catchment areas, above out of catchment siblings, but as an academy this is a decision for them to consider and consult upon. However, should the proposed housing developments in the area come to fruition it may be that there is a need to increase the places available of both primary and secondary provision in the town and this is an issue raised in our Education and Learning Infrastructure Plan. To date however none of these proposed developments have been approved so there is no certainty that they will happen or when this may be. Undoubtedly, funding is a concern. We have lobbied long and hard for additional funding from the DfE, as we believe their funding to date has not reflected the real level of need in Suffolk. We expect future years allocations to be significantly better, but will need to combine this with developer contributions and, where necessary, borrowing against growth in council tax receipts to fund our programme. We must however ensure that our resources are targeted to those areas of greatest need, and we will not be able to provide additional places in all schools that would like them, but focus on them in areas where there is the greatest shortage.”
If you are interested in having a stall in the Town Hall Complex please contact Mrs. Elaine Root at Hadleigh Town Council on 01473 823884 or by e.mail on staff@hadleightowncouncil.co.uk by Friday 13th November 2015. Tables will provided and cost £15.00 each. Space is limited so book quickly
Question: from Roger Young “At the Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team (“BESNT”) meeting on 26th March held in Hadleigh, and attended by over 70 Hadleigh residents, the safety of pedestrians in Benton Street was raised. In response the Chairman Babergh District Councillor Trot Ward arranged a meeting on 19th May 2015 with the Suffolk County Council officer – Steve Merry (Assistant Area Manager – Economy, Skills & Environment road engineer) At that meeting Steve Merry agreed to respond to the concerns raised and to the suggestions for improvements made by Hadleigh residents. Can the portfolio holder confirm the process from here to making the required changes to the road layout with expected dates?” Answer from Councillor James Finch, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport “I am aware of the problems with traffic passing through Benton Street. The prime concern is vehicles mounting the pavement and travelling along the pavement very close to the doors of homes. The pavement is too narrow on to which to install bollards and still retain access for wheel chairs and buggies. Officers have been considering an experimental scheme to widen the pavement and narrow the road so that measures can be provided to reduce the risk associated with vehicles driving on the pavement. In order to do this it would be necessary to remove some parking space. I shall be visiting the area to better acquaint myself with the issues and possible alternative solutions, prior to reviewing how we take this project forward. In response to your request for expected dates this will depend entirely on the adopted solution and will need to take account of legal and democratic processes, the level of support and objection, allocation of funding and whether there are any other construction works on the highway in the area.”

A boy once asked the famous Italian sculptor, painter and architect Michelangelo why he was working so hard chipping away on the block of marble that would become his next masterpiece. The artist replied, ‘There’s an angel inside this rock and I’m setting him free!’ Michelangelo saw beyond the block of marble to what it was going to become in the future. In Suffolk their are three pools with Hadleigh in the ‘Central’ Pool playing home and away against the Sudbury Talbots and Copdock Crusaders. Hadleigh played Sudbury away in the first game, coming away with a commanding win by 109 runs both Sam Handley and Dominic Manthorpe reaching the mandatory retirement score of 50. The home game was a much closer affair with the Hurricanes winning by 8 runs, Sam Handley reaching 50, well supported by Callum Morrin. At Copdock the visitors came away with an 18 run victory, Handley reaching another 50, Dominic Manthorpe blowing away the top order and two good catches by Barney Cox and Daniel Shanks rounded off a really good fielding performance. In the last pool game, against Copdock, the hosts got home by 5 wkts. Copdock were bowled out for only 112 in under 20 overs which looked to be at least 60 under par, a superb throw from the boundary from Charlie Monk ran out Searle and a 3 wicket haul in two overs from Daniel Thornton being the highlights in the field, setting up what looked like a simple run chase. Copdock were not ready to throw in the towel and a great bowling performance by them made it difficult for Hadleigh, another Handley 50 and cameos from Tommy Newbigging and Oliver Macmillian helped Hadleigh over the winning line in 17 overs. The Hurricanes now progress to finals day hosted by Mildenhall Cricket club

Newton Green Youngsters do Suffolk proud Youngsters from Newton Green Golf Club did Suffolk proud in the English Junior Champion Club final by finishing fourth out of 33 teams at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire. Despite losing their lowest handicap player because of holiday commitments, the Newton trio was still good enough to come within a point of joint third in the 36-hole, two day event. The title went to the Yorkshire club of Doncaster, with a Stableford score of 162, followed by Worlebury,Somerset 157, Breadsall Priory, Derbyshire 155, and Newton 154, who were a point ahead of fifth place Horsehay, Shropshire and Hereford 153. Newton qualified by winning the Suffolk final against Ufford Park, and throughout their run had fielded an unchanged team of Harvey Watts, James Cooper and Oli Page. However, single handicapper Watts was unavailable for the final, and 11-handicapper Kieron Sorrell stepped up to help in a solid team performance, which saw the Suffolk side retain the fourth place it achieved after the opening round. The scoring format featured the two best scores over each of the four, nine holes, and Page gave Newton a flying start with an impressive 25 points in his first nine, which also saw Sorrell score 19. In the second nine, Cooper's 17 and a further 16 from Page left the team in a strong overnight position. The following day, Page struck with another 23 and 19 points, while Cooper and Sorrell dovetailed to score 21 and 20 respectively, and leave Newton just out of the top three. Newton is also through to the semi-finals of the Suffolk junior match play team event.

Newton Green’s annual flag ship event, the Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf, enjoyed record support from members and a week of fine weather. Retired village shop keeper Tony Mitchell had special reasons to smile at the Saturday night presentation evening as earlier in the day he had led home the field in the main event of the week. Tony had his handicap cut from 26 to 23 as a result of carding an impressive 43 points to lead the biggest ever field of 132 competitors in the Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver. Handy man and seniors member Tony, having Tony Mitchell & Jonathan Lambert already built an all-weather cab for his golf buggy, is now using his retirement to try and achieve a handicap of 18. Best lady in the salver was Jenny Downes on 39 points, with Alice Barlow best junior with 34.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk The annual match for the Hadleigh Charity Cup saw Hadleigh win by four goals against a young side from Sudbury. The game provided excellent entertainment for a good sized crowd and Hadleigh deserved their convincing victory. The game was in aid of the Rosa Simon Music Fund and we thank everyone who made donations on the night. Walsham were at the Millfield for the opening league match. A draw was a fair result with both teams scoring once. The next match was against Felixstowe at the Millfield and we were well beaten by a four goal margin. A heavy defeat also occurred in a friendly game against a young team from Leyton Orient who put six goals into the Hadleigh net. An F.A Cup match at Hullbridge was lost by two goals to one. The Reserves have had some good results including a nine goal win at Whitton. The Thurlow Nunn Youth Team have also done well so far. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Ken Ramsey and Terry Adams. Winner of the Ground Improvement draw was David Crawford. Both draws were made by Rolf Beggerow at the Walsham match.
