National Road Safety Week at Beaumont School This years National Road Safety Week saw members of Wattisham Station organise a road safety competition with the Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) from Beaumont Community Primary School. Staff Sergeant Sy McCarthy, a Defence Road Safety Advisor from 7 Air Assault Bn REME set the challenge to the pupils of designing a poster aimed at drivers to reduce their speeds around the school and the surrounding area. Staff Sergeant McCarthy was joined by Warrant Officer Class 1 (Motor Transport Warrant Officer) Danny Atkinson and PC Mick Smith, MoD Police Wattisham who made up the judging panel responsible for the challenging task of picking out a winning poster. After much debate and one hours deliberation the judges singled out three submissions from over 30 entries. Pictured above are both runners up Tommy Macken and Bethany Goredema with winner Tracy Mensah-Apraku and the schools JRSOs Lewis Cullen and Daniel Carrigan. The three winners received book vouchers for prizes that were kindly presented by the Lord Mayor of Hadleigh. Special thanks go to Mrs Tracey Alexander, without whom this competition wouldn’t have come to fruition. SSgt S J McCarthy

Greener Hadleigh Wishing you all a happy and green New Year. Have you made your New Year's resolutions yet? Sometimes it can seem like too much effort/too difficult to make changes and stick to them, but every little helps, so please consider some of our greener suggestions. A popular resolution is the get fit - people regularly join a gym in January, or buy exercise equipment. Green alternatives could involve volunteering with projects run by an organisation such as Suffolk Wildlife Trust - fresh air and exercise! Or try the Conservation Volunteers there is not a branch listed for Suffolk (Essex and Norfolk have them) btcv.org.uk. Plan, and stick to, walking or using a bicycle more for short journeys. Volunteer to help neighbours or relative with their gardening. If you have thought of growing your own fruit and vegetables now is the time to start planning. In fact fruit trees and bushes are best planted in their dormant period, which is now, and some vegetables can be started in early spring. Don't forget to recycle Christmas cards - many shops will take them during January. Or buy labels to reuse them next year, make labels or notelets. Support local facilities and events, such as the cinema, live music, the footpath volunteers and other interest groups - this cuts transport pollution and encourages more variety. Look out for the loyalty card scheme in local shops. By supporting local retailers we help local employment and economy, reduce transport and keep our High Street vibrant and varied. Reduce, reuse, repair, recycle

Whatever Happened To 2012? Almost everyone is asking that question and adding “I was going to change my job/get fit/lose weight/cut my hair!” But across the country there are thousands of people who have achieved at least one of their goals – to lose weight – and this often leads to other life changes. Emma, from Hadleigh, achieved her goal this year with help from Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord. She says “I began my Cambridge journey in February 2012. I was feeling very nervous to open up to anyone about my bad habits and to get weighed in front of anyone but I had nothing to worry about and instantly felt comfortable chatting with Val. Over the next few months we made a really nice bond. I felt I could chat about anything with Val and she became a massive support with my weight loss. If I had a bad week or temptation had got the better of me then Val would be very understanding and helped me to stay on track during our weekly meetings. Regular texts, weighins, measurements and photos were a big incentive to keep going. Val is very knowledgeable, and I would use her advice to help tackle any problems I had. I have now reached my goal and am maintaining my new figure. I don't feel alone as Val still sends me texts and I plan to see her every few months to keep on the straight and narrow. Val gave me all the help, support, advice and encouragement I needed during my journey.” Emma is thrilled with her weight loss and is looking forward to 2013 confident she feels good, looks great, and has the knowledge to maintain a healthy weight. If you would like individual help with a weight problem, Val is an accredited Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant and can be contacted on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645 or visit www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL for more information

Howard on the carousel at Thursford
My dear readers, may I wish you all a Happy New Year. It is a fresh start and who knows what is around the corner. I only had one short holiday last year and I am hoping that I may do better this. Did you have a good Christmas. Well, as you can imagine I had to go hither and thither dragging Christmas puddings and fayre behind me. It sounds like a scene from The Nutcracker, a ballet that my mother and father used to take us to every year at The Festival Hall in London. I went to a delightful Christmas barristers’ party given by Field Court Chambers in London. When I first qualified, I met my learned friend Timothy Carlisle of those Chambers with whom I consult to this day. You too of course can have the benefit of that advice through us. The party was very posh, a choir sang Christmas carols and I supped on champagne and canapés. Frank, my chauffeur, is not so keen on the London runs and so his protégé Christof took the reins. The weather dictated a journey in the Range Rover and naturally Hadleigh Car Wash (Tel. 07734 466902) ensured that the car was clean and ready for duty. I was so glad to learn that you have been visiting Hadleigh Car Wash in good numbers since my recommendation. I have mentioned to you in previous years how much I enjoy the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. It is a Show that is extraordinary with a cast approaching one hundred, a band, a Wurlitzer – the colour, the glamour – it’s show business. The Show beckoned twice for me this Christmas. The auditorium is for the rest of the year a steam museum and my photographer has caught me by the carousel. The journey is a good two hours from Hadleigh but those of you who do not wish to drive their motor cars can join one of the charabancs that go. An audience of 1500 sits twice a day through November and December. Have you tried Hall Farm at Stratford St Mary Dedham CO7 6LS for a coffee and lovely cream scone or even lunch. It is worth a visit and there is an interesting farm shop. Rightmove suggests that due to competition among mortgage lenders and shortage of homes for sale, house prices could rise next year. If you find yourself buying or selling then do consult with me. We have a fairly commercial approach to things and our clients enjoy our good old fashioned service. Whilst so many of us acquire goods “on line” one really needs to “go local” for the services of a solicitor. Do give us a call with

Movember at M. W. Partridge The team at M W Partridges, Hadleigh, have once again been raising money for charity. Throughout November, the men had been growing facial hair to support the Movember Campaign. Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim is to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically Prostate Cancer and Testicular Cancer. All the men, the Mo Bros, that took part started off clean shaven on 1st November, and have only been allowed to trim their moustaches throughout the month – they shaved them off at the end of November – although I understand that some of their wives/partners, the Mo Sistas, quite like their ‘new man’. A very BIG THANK YOU to all those who donated to all three of our fund raising events throughout 2012. We raised over a total of £1,000 for CRY, Breast Cancer and now Prostate and Testicular Cancer. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our staff and customers, a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and thank you all for your support throughout the year. Lorna Gant
Hadleigh Orchestra Thank you to all who came and supported our Christmas concert. There was a lovely atmosphere. Led by our new leader, Lucy Jackson, and conducted by Ute Cooper, the Orchestra played a great mix of attractive music, plus the usual carols for people to sing. We especially thank you for your generous donations at the end and as a result we have been able to make a donation of £100. to St. Joseph’s Church. Now we look forward to new music and a new term. Rehearsals start again on Monday Jan. 14th. at 7.30 p.m. at Beaumont Community School and we would welcome new players. If you are thinking of joining an orchestra , whether you are a regular player or looking to get back to orchestral playing, or thinking of joining one for the first time, we would love to see you. We particularly need more viola players. If you would like to know more, please give me a ring on (01473) 827242, or ring Jose on (01473) 741055. Our next concert will be in early June, provisionally in Polstead. John Druce (Chairman, Hadleigh Orchestra)
Happy Birthday Pam! Festive Trivia Evening Raises £1,500 For Children in Need One of the Suffolk’s biggest quiz events was this week given a Christmassy theme, as it aimed to raise muchneeded funds for BBC Children in Need. Local hearing care specialists The Hearing Care Centre organised their 4th Charity Quiz Night to help raise money for the charity which supports disadvantaged children and young people right here in the UK, including funding projects right across Quiz Master Steve Flory, Quiz Winner David Suffolk. Spall, Pudsey and Karen Finch, MD of The Over 200 people Hearing Care Centre squeezed into Greshams Sports and Social Club in Ipswich, for a fun night of festive trivia, Christmas outfits, mince pies and light-hearted camaraderie. Guests enjoyed 10 rounds of spirited rivalry, and it was a very close contest all evening, before finally the team led by Suffolk resident, Mr David Spall, came out as winners, taking home the top prize of £200. The Hearing Care Centre, who looks after people’s hearing across East Anglia, managed to raise over £1,500 on the night. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, and dressed as Mrs Santa Claus for one night only said, “I didn’t think it was possible to have more people attend than last year, but our supporters continue to amaze me. It’s great to see so close to Christmas so many people coming out and supporting charitable causes. I think everybody had a great time and I’ve already had enquiries about when the next event is!”

Barn Dance and Auction of Promises exceeds all expectations A big thank you to everybody who joined us at Offton village hall on Saturday the 24th November for OBee's 5th birthday celebration - a good time was had by all. The combination of ticket sales, donations and the auction of promises raised an unbelievable £1,418, which will enable OBee to continue to support our volunteer programme, run community events and workshops, replace some much used tools, and repair and renovate others, and continue to deliver great learning experiences. OBee is a not-for-profit organisation set up for the benefit of the local community and we are dependent on and extremely grateful for all forms of donation and contribution. Improve & Prove grant from Suffolk Foundation We're delighted to announce that OBee recently won a £4,700 grant from Suffolk Foundation to complete the restoration of the fabric of the barn, making it much more weatherproof also creating and equiping an indoor teaching area. This is a great step forward for us enabling OBee to undertake another important part of our restoration project and improve our facilities which will encourage wider use by the community. We'll be doing the majority of the work through a series of courses and community workshops during the spring which will enable people to have the opportunity to learn traditional wood working skills. Watch out for details of these in our new course programme which comes out early in the new year. Volunteering projects If you'd like to learn greenwoodworking skills and have a got a few days to spare this winter, you might like to help out with this practical project to protect one of our Cob walls with a mini shingle roof. Come and learn some new skills with the shingle-making team on Wednesdays. Pre-booking essential. We've also got 5 exciting home-based volunteer opportunities available - have a look at our home page on www.orchardbarn.org.uk for more ways in which you could get involved and help us grow our social enterprise alongside your own skills and experience. For more information about any of our activities please call Sarah on 01473 658193 or 07766 054042, or you can email her at sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk

Happy New Year! Yes its 2013 and here’s to a new year of the Hadleigh Town Forum. Last year was a busy year with the Queens Jubilee and also two fantastic Craft Fairs and not forgetting the climax to the year the Christmas Lighting up on the 2nd December. Preparations for the Christmas event starts nearly a year in advance with the street closure being put in place and the Stage Company and fair being booked. The Christmas trees also have to be booked and erected throughout the high street which is always done fantastically by Glen, Brian and their team who spend many hours in the freezing cold putting the trees up voluntarily. Next to arrange is the BIG tree and decorations in the market place, with the help of the Chamber of Commerce and also the Town Council the tree looked fantastic. I would like to say a massive thank you to Cowles Electrical who also voluntarily spend many hours in the market place wiring up all the lights and also this year lighting the small tree too. This year we had some children from St Mary’s and Beaumont Schools make some decorations for the big tree and I hope next year we can depend on the schools support again. As we worked hard with the craft fairs during the year we splashed out and hired some LIVE reindeers which were in the URC garden. People flocked to see the reindeer as the children visited Santa which is arranged by the Rotary Club. We also had a live nativity scene from churches together and local stalls in the Ansell hall including face painting, handmade cards, fresh popcorn, cakes and a cooking demonstration from Mark David’s Cooking Experience. In the doctor’s car park we had our traditional funfair, while in the Market Place you could get some hot donuts or a hotdog or burger from the sea scouts. Entertainment on stage included the Hadleigh Community Choir, Janet and her group from Fun Dancing, Georgette and the Distraction and not forgetting carols from the Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band. The lights were then switched on by our town Mayor Cllr Mary Munson this was followed by lots of snow and a Hadleigh version of the “12 days of Christmas”. This event is run and funded by the Hadleigh Town Forum and its volunteers and I would like to personally thank Glen & Elaine Root, Brian and Sarah Loftus, Jean, Aileen, Sarah E, Sue & Terry, Tom Gorden and his dad for sorting out the screen and Arthur our photographer for some fantastic photos. I would also like to thank personally thank my fiancé Sarah-Jane for helping me though the year with the craft fairs and for putting up with me in general. Also to the town councillors and anybody else who helped out during the year with our events in Hadleigh we cannot do it without volunteers help. Last but not least to Kelvin, Matt and the team at Keith Avis Printers they do a fantastic job putting all our posters and inserts in the community news every month. As I said before the Town Forum is a voluntary group but to bring you more events we need more members. We meet once every quarter (more if needed) to discuss not only entertainment events but also matters in Hadleigh. Please visit our website to find out more about us and also how you can get involved in this rewarding group. Our next event is our Easter Craft fair on the 17th March 2013, if you would like to take part you can print your own form on our website. Here’s to fantastic 2013 Cllr Trev Clarke, Chairman of the Hadleigh Town Forum

In 2007, I wrote to Hadleigh Town Council pointing out that only two streets in the town were named after women and submitted a list of twenty worthy candidates. The names of five benefactresses and two innkeepers have been selected for Weavers Meadow currently being built by Persimmon Homes off the new roundabout on Hadleigh by-pass (A1071), the Company being only too happy for its estate to have streets named after Hadleigh women as the approach is also from Lady Lane. Mary Clarke Close: During his last illness in 1741, George Gaell, manorial lord of Hadleigh, expressed a wish to establish a charity for providing coats for the inmates of Pykenham’s Almshouses in George Street. His niece and heirat-law, Mary Clarke, gave 22 acres of land at Foxearth in Essex for this purpose, the rent from which would pay for ‘one substantial upper coat or garment made of cloth for each man and a petty coat or upper garment of freize for each woman’. The clothing has not been distributed for some years but this charity is still administered by Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charities for the benefit of the almsfolk. Matilda Groome Road: In 1464, Matilda bequeathed in perpetuity a poor house in Hell Street (the eastern part of George Street), which is believed to be the beginnings of the present almshouses there. Alice Parkins Close: In 1578, Alice gave two houses, now addressed as Nos.45-49 High Street, the rents from which were to provide annual distributions of clothing to the poor of the town. The property remained in the hands of the Grand Feoffment until 1931, when it was sold. Sarah Rand Road: During the 19th century, the Rand family were prominent farmers and maltsters and Sarah, who died in Australia, left £1,000 to benefit Hadleigh’s almshouses. Her bequest was received in 1922. Ann Strutt Close: In 1614, Ann bequeathed £50, the income from which was to maintain an annual clothing distribution. In 1661, the money was secured by purchasing the Black Swan Inn in Benton Street, which continued in the ownership of the Grand Feoffment until 1897, when it was sold. Ellen Aldous Avenue: From 1865 until 1897, Robert Aldous was hotel keeper at the White Lion, now No.44 High Street. When he died aged 66, his widow Ellen took over until her own death in 1914 aged 70. Emma Girling Close: When Walter Girling died in 1900 after a couple of years as beer-house keeper at the Moulders’ Arms in George Street (now part of Partridge’s shop), Emma took over but by 1908, she was publican at the White Horse in Stone Street, where she remained until 1922. Waterfield House Care Home in Hadleigh, is currently celebrating winning the Regional Runwood Homes Most Improved Home Award at the Company’s Annual Conference in December 2012. David Parry, Director of Operations for Runwood Homes said “it is thanks to the dedication and hard work of the staff members and support from local Community Groups and Local Authority. All of which has helped in providing person centred care along with a warm and welcoming homely environment for all the residents and enabling everyone at Waterfield House to be part of the wider community of Hadleigh.” Waterfield House in Grays Close, Hadleigh has been open for 18 months, is close to the centre of Hadleigh and provides care for people requiring both residential and dementia care. It also boasts 7 self contained supporting living apartments to help promote independent living.
Pause for Thought Happy New Year! An expression we use to wish folks a prosperous New Year. As we reflect on the past year we see many joyous things but also see the bad things that happened in our nation. We wonder what the New Year will bring us. Many folks hope that it will be better than last year. The storms of life seem to be bringing more and more difficulties and even our weather brings with it hard times for a great deal of people in our land. If our hope is in Jesus Christ we know that whatever life throws at us, and we are not immune from tragedies and heartaches, we can trust in the wonderful promises He has given us that He will never leave us nor forsake us. We can call upon Him and He will answer our prayers. "Call to Me, and I will answer, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." Jeremiah 33 v 3
Kersey Mill Open Day January 5th 2013 11 am - 3 pm The mill cannot grind with the water that is past. A lovely proverb and very apt. We are 6 months into the restoration and refurbishment programme at Kersey Mill and Maltings; most of the commercial section is finished and indeed let, just 3 units remaining. The coffee shop, health and fitness centre, beauty and hair salon, along with the wedding venue and function room are up and running. All of these will be open for public viewing and to take advantage of their special offers. We hope to be able to start work on the mill in 2013, a large project that will take a considerable amount of time and money, the plan is to try and reinstate the wheel and a pair of the stones so it can grind again. We have already managed to undertake preliminary works including roof repairs, clearing out of the wheel and race along with repairs to the tail race and general clearing of the mill, we would like to thank all those that have already volunteered to get involved with the project and who have helped with the above. An open day on January 5th is being held when the public can look over the ground floor of the mill, the upper floors are too unstable at present, however the ground floor houses most of the original machinery and wheel that has not turned for around a century. The existing businesses will also be open for the public to see what they have to offer, the coffee shop will be serving tea’s coffee and lunches. Chris Hulcoop and Mark Barnard of Suffolk Mills will be on hand in The Mill to talk to visitors and explain how we plan to undertake tasks like re-cogging the pit wheel putting the line shaft out of gear that will then allow for the wheel to be turned and repaired for the first time in nearly 100 years. If you are a large organisation or a single individual who would like to be part of the restoration and help create this legacy for generations to come please do get in touch or come and see us at the open day. Hadleigh Community Playgroup The staff and committee from Hadleigh Community Playgroup would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2013. Last term we had a visit from the local fire engine and we would like to say a thank you to Dale Willings and Mark Squirrell who took the time to come to visit the children. The children had an enjoyable time. On the 7th December we held our Christmas Fair and we raised £400, this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the local businesses, and parents of our playgroup thank you. The money will be spent on new resources for the group. The playgroup held their annual christmas party on 15th December the children where entertained by Steff and Nonsense, and a visit from Santa and his Elf where they all received a present. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Hadleigh Charity shop for their kind donation, and to Santa and his Elf for taking the time to visit our playgroup thank you to you all. Don’t forget that on Friday afternoons at 1pm we have our Parent and Toddler group for children aged from 1year to 2yrs. This is an opportunity for you to meet new friends and to have a tea/coffee while your little one play. If you are interested in sending your child to our playgroup contact Janet on 01473 827702 or visit our website: www.hadleighcommunityplaygroup.co.uk

Hadleigh Community Primary News Hadleigh tag rugby team celebrates success once again! On Monday 19th November, HCPS attended the Hadleigh Pyramid Schools tag rugby festival at Hadleigh High School. They were very successful and won a place at the Westbourne Schools Partnership tag rugby finals. Therefore, on the 28th November our team (made up from a mixture of Year 5 and 6 pupils) travelled to Woodbridge Rugby Club to take part in higher level competition. Once again, they were very successful and were the overall winners! They will now attend the Suffolk County finals in May 2013. Well done to all those children who represented our school. Evacuees eventually allowed to return home! Almost all of Year six went on a residential trip to Aylmerton, Norfolk, during the week beginning 19th November. They left carrying their gas mask boxes, identity cards and ration books as they were being evacuated for their own safety as part of their studies about World War 2. In fact, they had a great time! The activities were extremely varied, the accommodation very comfortable, and the children loved their three course dinners every evening! Activities included driving boats on the Norfolk Broads whilst trying to find information about spies, visiting Cromer and Sea Palling, and lots of team building exercises. The year group have certainly learned to be more independent and caring, and it is fantastic to have an opportunity like this so early in the school year as it builds the feeling of ‘The Year Six Team’, which then develops and encourages cooperation and social skills for the whole year.

A wealth of Christmas activities throughout the school. Christmas really started for us on 27th November, when the choir and musicians provided the entertainment for the over 60’s Christmas lunch at Hadleigh Baptist Church. Exactly 100 children visited for the afternoon – some singing in the choir, others ringing bells or playing the recorder. They also performed at Angel Court and Sydney Brown Court (although not so many of them at one time!). On Tuesday 18th December, all of Key Stage 2 took part in the carol service at St Mary’s Church. Year 5 children read from ‘The Message’ and the musicians and choir once again had the opportunity to perform. In Nursery, the children have participated in a range of Christmas related activities, but one to note is the bauble decorating whereby children decorated baubles which were then fired and glazed. These were given to the children to give as Christmas presents. We’d like to offer our thanks to Mrs Whitnall for leading this activity. Year 1 entertained the rest of the school and parents with their delightful performance of ‘Away in a Manger’. The dancing was wonderful, you could hear every word of the singing and speech, and amazingly, two children sang alone, in front of hundreds of people – incredible when you are only six years old! Reception entertained parents with their Christmas songs, performed in their own new unit. Finally, Year 2 took a different approach this year and decided to have a ‘Christmas Share Afternoon’ in the hall. There were many activities that the parents could become involved in including biscuit making (with Mrs Vickery, our cook’s help), making penguin Christmas cards, making dough decorations (using plenty of glitter!) and following instructions to produce baubles from tessellating shapes. There was a book area where parents and children could share Christmas stories, and our laptop

computers enabled parents and children to share activities from ‘North Pole.com.’ The afternoon culminated in a presentation by the children – they sang Christmas songs and each child read a part of ‘The Night Before Christmas’. We were delighted by the support of parents for this, and all of our Christmas celebrations. News from St Mary’s Primary School The children in Years 4, 5 and 6 were very lucky to work with Dean Parkin, the ‘Managing a Masterpiece’ Poet in residence. Dean is working on new poems in response to the artistic history of the Stour valley, and part of his work involves days spent in local schools developing poems with young children. The children produced lots of poems in response to paintings, which will be entered into the ‘Managing a Masterpiece’ competition in the coming months. The children were inspired and enjoyed the opportunity to work creatively with such an engaging poet. We all really enjoyed his performance of his poem, ‘Bubblewrap’! Thanks to Mr Richard Pettit from Highcliff veterinary Practice, who visited Rowan class to help the children with their project on bones. They had a fantastic time exploring animal skeletons and X Rays. Mr Pettit talked to the children about treating broken bones with pins and plates. We are also grateful to Andrew’s The Butchers for providing marrow bones for the children to study – they really enjoyed the experience! St Mary’s School hosted a special RE day for children from other schools in the Hadleigh pyramid. The group visited St Mary’s Church and The Baptist Church in Hadleigh to look at similarities and differences. We focused on Baptism in the two churches and the children asked very thoughtful questions about the practices and symbols involved. The children enjoyed exploring the churches and trying on the special clothing at St Mary’s. We all appreciate the time given to us by Pastor Chris Todd, Pastor Greg Frost and the Very Reverend Martin Thrower, who helped the children to understand all the things the churches have in common. Recently, some of our pupils enjoyed a special ICT theme day at Beaumont Community School. They had a great time investigating the First News website and then recording podcasts of news reports. After writing scripts, recording reports and adding music, the children’s reports were presented to the rest of the group. Thanks to Beaumont for hosting this exciting day. The children have all worked really hard this term and should be proud of all their achievements and progress. We were pleased to be joined by lots of parents and grandparents once again for a special assembly, during which we celebrated the children’s successes both in and out of school. There were many amazing achievements, including music, dance, athletics and swimming awards. Such a lot of work went into the Early Years Christmas production about a bossy king. The children had lots of songs and dances to learn and they did a marvellous job. Thanks to all the staff members and parents who helped to organise the play and make costumes. The children should be really proud of how well they performed. The children from Key Stage 1 also produced a Nativity play for parents. This was a fantastic science fiction take on the Christmas story, complete with astronauts, aliens and robots! The scenery and costumes were brilliant! Once again, thanks to the staff members and parents who gave up a lot of time to ensure it was a terrific performance, and well done to the children who learned lots of lines and songs and performed so confidently. After the two plays, we collected money for the British Heart Foundation. We raised about £70 with more money to come after our
Carol Service at St Mary’s Church at the end of term. Thank you to the Parent Support Group for organising our fantastic Christmas Fair. The fun started with the Key Stage 2 children singing Christmas carols and songs; they sang beautifully and put everybody into a Christmas mood! As always, we enjoyed playing games, shopping for Christmas gifts and eating cakes and hot dogs. The highlights for the children were visiting Father Christmas in the grotto, making decorations and wrapping secret presents for their parents in the ‘secret’ room! Thanks again to the Support Group for all the hard work put in – it was a fantastic event and we raised more than £600. Money raised recently by the Parent Support Group has been spent on lots of new phonics and reading resources. Also, the Parent Support Group put on a great Christmas disco. The children enjoyed playing lots of games and showing off their dance moves! We were delighted to receive a visit from Saint Nicholas just before Christmas. He talked to the children about Christmas traditions in other European countries, particularly Holland, where he is known as Sinterklass. Saint Nicholas told stories about giving gifts and sharing What we have, which have influenced the way we celebrate Christmas today. The children really enjoyed meeting him and they were very grateful for the chocolates! We were very lucky to see the wonderful art work of Sue Symons celebrating advent. Thanks to David and Wendy Atkins for bringing the impressive pieces, which feature intricate needlework, into school for the children to study close up. David and Wendy also used the art to help tell the Christmas story and discuss the importance of advent with the children. Our annual Carol Service at St Mary’s Church was a great celebration of the Christmas story, including well known carols and songs from the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 Christmas shows. Thanks to the Very Reverend Martin Thrower for giving a talk during the service. The service was dedicated to all the parents, grandparents, Governors and members of the community who come into school to help with the children’s learning and to provide enrichment activities, such as music tuition. We are very lucky to have such a supportive school community! Well done to all the children who went to Magdalen House Care Home to sing Christmas carols for the residents. As always, the children sang beautifully and were excellent representatives of the school. By the time you are reading this, Christmas will have come and gone for another year! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community who has helped the school during 2012 and we wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

THE HADLEIGH SOCIETY Caring about Hadleigh, yesterday, today and tomorrow
One of our great concerns through all of the applications that Tesco have made for a supermarket on the Brett Works site has been over the increased amount of traffic through the centre of the Town including the large lorries delivering to the store. With the 1998 plans the intention was to knock down most of the Cinch store, athough the Babergh Officers and the Suffolk County Council Traffic department had no objection to this we in the Hadleigh Society were extremely concerned. We produced a cardboard model of the entrance and using Dinky Cars to scale were able to show how difficult the turn was and that lorries would need both lanes of the high street to turn in or out of the site. At the inquiry one of the grounds for refusal was the entrance into the High Street. Since then the following applications have been to make the road into the site through the Babergh Car Park turning in and out just off the Bridge. Tesco have had to produce documentation with computerised and nationally accepted models showing the access, the turning space required for lorries, and indicating how many cars they expect to be using their store hourly, and therefore designing their car park to accommodate the traffic. From these documents we are able to identify how many cars are coming and from which direction. Lorries are expected to use the Lorry route which is from the Bypass and down Castle Road. With the 1998 application our members worked out a ‘route plan’ to identify how many extra cars would be on the road using the Tesco figures, and by using only 25 cars following a set pattern for one hour on a Saturday morning and identifying those cars with just a coloured sticker in the windscreen, after half an hour the police asked us to stop as we were blocking the Angel Street / High Street junction. You will remember that some two years ago we repeated the exercise only slightly differently and notified the police. On that occasion it was much more of a ‘Fun’ demonstration, the police turned out in force and for the first time in my nearly 60 years in Hadleigh we had policemen on ‘point’ duty. But our point was proved. However we have also been seriously looking at Tesco’s predicted traffic numbers and how they will affect Town traffic. Tesco have to indicate the percentage of traffic coming from various directions through the town, and
HERE THEY COME AGAIN!
HANDS OFF HADLEIGH 20

obviously even with the traffic that is able to enter from the By-pass the greater portion will have to travel through the north end of the High Street turning into Bridge Street. Tesco predict 200 cars an hour entering the car park at peak hours. (200 in must mean 200 out so an extra 400 cars an hour turning on the Bridge). That would be one car turning into or out of the site every 9 seconds, as well as the traffic already using Bridge Street, although Tesco predict the 25% of traffic already using Bridge Street would be going into their store. The Chamber of Commerce undertook a traffic check in Bridge Street last year. We have looked at the figures slightly differently. Firstly, we asked Tesco to identify a Town like Hadleigh that had not been affected by the increased traffic, and once again is was Tiptree. We recorded the number of cars entering the Tiptree car park on a Friday morning and Saturday morning, firstly in 2008 and again in 2010. Within those two years there had been an increase of 30 cars an hour. The Tiptree car park is larger than Hadleigh, we counted 240 places. The entrance to Tesco in Tiptree is nothing like Hadleigh, being via a mini roundabout on a straight road with perfect vision, a road carrying less traffic than Bridge Street. On a March Saturday between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. 405 cars entered and 350 cars left the car park, i.e. 755 car movements in one hour, this means a car was on the mini round about entering the Tesco site every 4.7 seconds. Tesco has decided that Hadleigh needed 200 car parking places thus expecting 200 cars entering the car park an hour in peak shopping times. With Tiptree having 240 places they were presumably predicting 240 cars an hour, but they had over 400, and as there is the expectation of shoppers using the two hour free parking to enable them to go into the High Street to shop the number of car movements demonstrate what we saw with our own eyes, that people shopped in Tesco got back into their cars and left the town. A week later we counted the cars using the Calais Street junction between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and there were 627 vehicles negotiating the junction. We also, in October this year, visited the newly opened Tesco at Saxmundham and noted that already the number of cars entering and leaving the car park is 30% above that predicted in their planning application. In October this year we again counted the traffic at the Calais Street junction at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday and also Friday evening between 4.45 and 5.45. And this time we counted how the cars used the junction, i.e. High Street into Bridge Street, Bridge Street into High Street and also High Street in Calais Street and Calais Street into High Street. On Saturday morning there were 688 cars at the junction, with 270 of those turning into Calais Street and Friday evening 809 with 360 turning into Calais Street.. With the imminent arrival of Morrisons in Calais Street we can not predict how many cars will be using which store, but if we take Tesco’s prediction of 200 an hour and give both supermarkets an equal number of cars we increase the number of cars turning into Calais Street by 100. i.e. a car using the junction on Saturday morning every 4.5 seconds This is not a straight road with a mini roundabout at Calais Street. The road has listed buildings on all three corners, just as you turn into Calais Street the road narrows with a chicane, and to turn anything larger than a small van needs both sides of the road to turn from the High Street into Bridge Street, add to that the possible queues of traffic trying to turn in and out of the Tesco site on the Bridge. If we the residents of Hadleigh can see this as a problem can we expect our planning authority to recognise that the increase in traffic is not acceptable and unlike last year to permit the Councillors to refuse the site on traffic grounds, as indeed those against the Tesco application wanted to do last year but were not permitted to by the Babergh officers? Thank you to Hadleigh Mobility Centre We would like to thank Elaine and Adie for lending a pair of crutches to Ken, on our quick return from Greece back in April. Whilst away Ken had a fall and broke his knee, he was on crutches for several months, and is still awaiting an operation. The Greeks don’t offer after care and we had to cut short our trip, we had no further access to a wheelchair or crutches once we boarded the plane, and were concerned what would happen once we got to Gatwick, so we phoned Kens wonderful brother Russell. Russell, along with his wife Ruth, organised a pair of crutches from Hadleigh Mobility Centre, and came and picked us up from the airport and drove us straight to A&E Ipswich. Elaine and Adie lent these to Ken for several months, without any hassle and we are very grateful. It’s nice to know there are still people that will go that extra mile to help you. Hadleigh Mobility Centre are in the market place – you will always get a very warm welcome. Thank you Elaine and Adie! And Ruth and Russell! We hope that you had a Merry Christmas and wish you a very Happy New Year. All the best, Lorna and Ken Gant

If this was agreed, the survey would take part over the course of a week in order to obtain representative data. • It was noted that the planning applications in respect of the cottage adjoining The Marquis of Cornwallis had been withdrawn. • The War Memorial had been cleaned in time for the Remembrance Day service – the PC was grateful to Neil Luckston for carrying this work out free of charge. • The PC had agreed to make a donation of £50 towards the cost of two new trees to be planted by Babergh in Upper Layham. • John Curran, the PC’s new Emergency Officer, was working on proposals for an Emergency Plan for the village.
New Parish Councillor recruited Following the resignation of David Cooper as a Parish Councillor, the vacancy was advertised on the village notice boards. There were no applications so councillors considered suggestions for co-option. John Curran, who lives in Watermill Close, was approached and was pleased to accept the position. He attended his first meeting in November and has taken on the role of Emergency Officer for the Parish. He is well suited to that role having worked for some years as a Safety Officer for Eastern Electricity. John’s first project is to ensure that arrangements are made for gritting in icy weather. If you are prepared to offer your services as a voluntary ‘grit spreader’ at the top of Mill Lane or at the Recycling Centre please get in touch with John on 01473 823151 or email: jcatno6@aol.com
Textile Bank for Lower Layham The success of the Recycling Centre in Upper Layham has led the Parish Council to look into the possibility of introducing one in Lower Layham. It is hoped that a large metal container will be placed behind the Queen’s Head in due course but, for the moment, there is a large plastic box, the contents of which will be transported by volunteers to the Upper Layham site. If you live in Lower Layham please consider taking your unwanted textiles to the Queen’s Head. They are worth cash to the Parish and it doesn’t take long for a few pounds-worth to accumulate. Proceeds will be used for small village projects. The last payment received covered the cost of a grit bin at the top of Water Lane.
Layham Community Email This is our village notice board of the future and the number of residents declaring their address is slowly growing – about 20% of homes are now represented. Please register your willingness to receive village news by email – just send a note to:layhamcommunityemail@gmail.com and include your name and address. You will then occasionally be sent local information by the Clerk to the Parish Council. The system will be used sparingly and your email address will not be divulged to anyone else.

The first Layham Community lunch, attended by thirty villagers, was held on Wednesday 5th December in The Queen’s Head in Lower Layham. Earlier in 2012 the Parish Council had decided to review the Parish Plan and one of the outcomes of this meeting was the idea of a community lunch. An organising group of Tanith Laing, Lesley Garnett, Sue Curran and Sonia Groom planned the first one for December to gauge the response from the village. With the date, venue and menu fixed the posters went up and the Hadleigh Community News was used to spread the word. The organisers were surprised and delighted with the immediate response and the thirty places were soon filled. On a cold December day the guests were welcomed by the log fires of the local pub and enjoyed a two course meal and coffee, all for £5! Following this success the organisers announced that the next Community Lunch would take place in February (date to follow). Steve and Tanith Laing were thanked for letting The Queen’s Head, and its facilities, be used for the lunch. The organisers are hoping to use local food producers and were glad to cook vegetables from Partridges Farm Shop for the first meal.
A big thank you for lots of community spirit! In November, our Autumn days were brightened by a weekend of local creative talent at The Queen’s Head in Lower Layham. With Ken Oliver’s second exhibition and sale of Art, featuring stunning paintings of birds and local scenes, Steph Gregory’s beautiful display of handsewn quilts and Tanith & Karnie’s wonderful handmade crafts, the weekend was amazing. Everyone commented on the lovely, warm, friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Ken, Lee and Steph would like to say a big thank you to Steve and Tanith, all the staff at the Queen’s and everyone who came. We were overwhelmed by all the local support and it was wonderful to celebrate the nature and beauty of Layham and Hadleigh, the local arts & crafts and the great sense of community an event like this always brings. Funds were raised for The Layham Old Queen’s Sport & Social Club Charity, with £200 from Ken’s exhibition and over £200 from the raffle for Steph’s lovely quilt, which was won by Queen’s Head regulars Ron and Viv. We hope that everyone who came enjoyed the weekend as much as we did. A great atmosphere with lots of community spirit. Thank-you !
Rescued Tawny Owl Tanith and Steve Laing found a Tawny Owl in distress on the ground whilst out walking their dog on the bridleway off Stoke Road. It appeared to have a serious eye infection. They contacted the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary at Stonham Barns and the staff there were pleased to take the bird in and look after it until the infection was cleared up. Following treatment, the bird has been collected and released back into the wild near where it was found.
Layham War Memorial The quest for information about the men whose names are on our war memorial goes on. The appeal last month for information about Leonard Brewer has led to new contacts. When new information is gathered it will be published in Letter from Layham. This month we are appealing for information about Leading Canteen Assistant Arthur Holmes – son of Harry and Georgina Holmes. We know that Arthur served as a NAAFI employee on the Light Cruiser H.M.S. Sheffield during the Second World War. This service included escorting the Malta convoys, hounding the Bismarck in the North Atlantic and escorting Arctic convoys. The ship hit a mine off Iceland in March1942 and required repairs. Arthur died (aged 21) in May 1942 and is buried in Layham burial ground. We would like to know more about Arthur’s family, where they lived, what Arthur did before he joined NAAFI and how he died. If you can help please contact Michael Woods on 01473 823798. Thank you.

Layham Playgroup Father Christmas’s Fire Engine Arrival! The children have been very busy with the festivities at Playgroup recently. We have been making Christmas decorations using lots of sparkly glitter, and also have made cards to give to our families. The children have been learning all about the Christmas story and have even retold it using our wooden Nativity set and some finger puppets. We wrote our own letters to Santa, which we then walked to post in the postbox down the lane. We were so lucky this year that Santa replied to our letters in person, by arriving at Playgroup in a Fire Engine! The children were very excited to see the fire engine approaching and were very surprised when Santa emerged, carrying a sack of presents for the children. A huge ‘Thank You’ to all for organising the visit. Festive Fair News Our Playgroup Festive Fair was held recently in Hadleigh and was a big success. The hall was decorated beautifully with bunting made by the children and table decorations in the cafe area. There were lots of stalls, games, refreshments and a visit by Santa. Thank you to all who helped with the organisation and running of the day and helping to produce another successful fundraising event for the Playgroup. The New Year Preparations are already underway for 2013, with the children planting some bulbs ready for spring time. We are all looking forward to watching them grow and flower. Next term we will be thinking about our pets and animals, especially those in cold countries. At our Ladybirds group on Wednesdays, George from Brett River Children’s Centre will be running the popular ‘Baby Yoga’ sessions again. These sessions involve singing, moving and action songs and are great fun for children and adults. The sessions start on Wednesday 9th January from 9.30-11.00 and cost only ÂŁ2 per family. Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Government funding is available for 3 year olds and in certain cases for some 2 year olds. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 2 – 4yr old and would like an information pack or would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk

Change of use policies Councillor Cook reported the response received from Babergh District Council and advised that a copy had been sent to the owner of Mixers. It was felt that the following paragraph may be relevant: “There is some flexibility as the policy states that where there is evidence that the premises is unsuitable or unviable for commercial purposes then it does not need to be marketed. Concerns were raised about vehicle traffic to the site increasing in the future. It was pointed out that the site is currently mothballed and that the applicant does not have any current plans to recommence re-opening of a disused working or reactivation of operations for the depositing of mineral waste. Whilst it is understood that there are no current plans to re-open the site, if this were to change a request for a traffic survey to be undertaken to ascertain any changes since the original application was granted would be made. B/12/01277/CEU Buy Right, Calais Street, Application for Certificate of Lawfulness of an Existing Use – Extension to existing car parking area. The Committee are happy to corroborate with the evidence presented to them. This Council would support what has been done and are pleased to see the inclusion of a footpath in the development plans for this area as this has been requested in the past. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority, details of which are listed in the Schedule attached to these Minutes. The Clerk was asked to write to Babergh District Council to ask: i) Why does it take so long to get decision results out to applicants? ii) Why was 109 High Street discussed at the same meeting as 106 High Street but the Particulars of Notification document has not been received? B/07/01696/FUL – TOPPESFIELD HALL, MARKET PLACE Councillors noted that this application had been withdrawn. LONG STAY CAR PARKING This item was raised by a local resident at the Town Council Meeting held on Thursday 22nd November 2012. Councillor Cook recommended that Babergh District Council be contacted to arrange a meeting with the relevant officers to ascertain how the use of long-term parking spaces could be made more accessible to workers in the town. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Councillor Cook reported that a meeting will be held on November 27th with Rich Cook and Sandra Scott of Babergh District Council to progress the Neighbourhood Plan. ANY OTHER BUSINESS Councillor Cook reported that Babergh District Council had e.mailed the Clerk advising that lights were left on in their car parks all night to deter vandalism in the area.
B/12/01087/FUL 20 Woodthorpe Road, Hadleigh This application had been refused by Babergh District Council and Councillor Cook asked that the following information be included in the minutes so that anyone making a planning application is aware of this condition: Section 106 Planning Obligation: In accordance with Local Plan policy HS32 and Supplementary Planning Guidance document (revised 2012) the applicant is required to contribute financially towards Open Space Provision within the district. A planning obligation has not been completed in this instance. Although the applicant has never indicated that they are unwilling to enter into an agreement the absence of such an agreement means that the application cannot be recommended positively. The proposal is therefore recommended for refusal being contrary to Policy HS32. It was noted that this information is provided by Babergh District Council prior to an application being submitted. Councillor Cook advised that the East House application will be discussed by Babergh District Council on the 19th December. It was agreed that she attends and speak on behalf of Hadleigh Town Council. The Civic Voice had provided information on the Government’s new planning proposals. It was agreed that this be an item on the next Planning Committee Agenda for discussion and response. Councillor Cook reported an e.mail received from a concerned resident following a second accident at the Cock Inn junction on George Street since the opening of the new leisure facility. It was agreed that a letter be sent to Babergh District Council supporting the residents request that the highway works that should have been carried out before the opening of the new leisure centre be carried out urgently. Councillor Lazenby advised that there had been an article in the local press reporting on the difficulties the Planning Department were under. It would appear that the integration had left some departments with insufficient staff to provide adequate services. Councillor Byrne reported that she and Councillor Angland had attended a seminar in Somerset about organisations involved in disputes with supermarkets across the Country. There had been a discussion on Neighbourhood Plans and two groups had obtained sponsorship from their local supermarkets to assist the Councils in producing a Neighbourhood Plan. This may be something Hadleigh Town Council could consider. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.30pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net On the 23rd November our pupils participated in our first Enrichment Day of this academic year where we focus on further developing pupils’ independent learning skills, encouraging them to take responsibility for their learning and developing the skills and attributes to be an active contributor to a team. Year 11 participated in a variety of activities including: Study Skills, Preparing for Interviews and Personal Statements. Year 10 pupils were able to choose from a London Walking Tour, developing Rocket Powered Dragsters, performing activities to help improve their levels of confidence in musical performance with students from Suffolk One, participating in using technologies to meet the challenge of a Dragon's Den type of activity entitled 'Go Gadget Go,’ creating a web application for the iPad, participating in a GCSE PE trip to Essex University, taking part in a GCSE Art Students Visit to the London Art Galleries or undertaking activities including mini-assault courses, wire traverses and puzzles at an outdoor pursuits centre. Year 9 took part in an activity called 'The Real Game' focussing on dreams and aspirations as well as work and the financial realities of life. Year 8 visited the Globe Theatre or created teaching resources and displays linked to the work and world of Shakespeare. Year 7 pupils visited Hedingham Castle or used their maths skills to design a dream bedroom and considered the skills required in interior design The outcomes of the day revealed how flexible, creative and able our students really are when they have the opportunities to develop their selfconfidence. When confronted with unusual challenges they rise to the occasion and show us their true potential. Many pupils truly excelled in the wide variety of activities on offer and performed at new heights, sometimes literally! We were really proud of our pupils’ achievements. Certificates Evening On Thursday 6th December we hosted our Certificates evening for last year’s Year 11. This evening allows us to present our ex-pupils with their examination certificates and celebrate their achievements. It was a real pleasure to welcome pupils back to school and share this very special evening with their parents. Many of our ex-pupils have now spent a term at various sixth form and college providers and were able to share their experiences with each other and staff. All are fully enjoying the challenges and opportunities which are being provided by their new provision. It was also an opportunity, after the presentation, to discuss entertaining and fond memories of Hadleigh, with some pleasing admissions by our ex-pupils that they valued the support and care they received here – and quite miss it! Over the last few years we have invited representatives from our range of sixth form providers to address our pupils, considering the opportunities which lie ahead as they enter their adult lives. This year, Jan Harker, Vice Principal of The Sixth Form College Colchester, shared with pupils the importance of the skills they gain at high school in enabling them to be successful independent learners at college. She shared her experience of Hadleigh pupils, identifying the following as being strengths: • the ability to take responsibility for their learning • the resilience to cope with challenge • the drive to complete the challenges set • the strong interpersonal skills they possess to be a highly effective team worker • the ability to think creatively to solve problems • the willingness to get involved in the widest range of educational opportunities offered • the empathy to support and relate well to others. It is reassuring to note that so many of our pupils display the skills which will enable them to be adaptable, caring citizens of the future. We invest a great deal of time both in and outside of the classroom environment offering pupils the opportunity to hone and perfect these skills so that they have the best chances of reaching their full potential personally as well as academically. This would not be possible without the efforts made by parents who support their children in ensuring they adopt positive attributes at school and work hard at home. Our current pupils should take note of the skills which are required and seek to continue to actively develop these throughout their education at Hadleigh. Achieving your full potential is always a challenge. It requires a great deal of 26

effort, commitment and determination. In addition you have to be courageous in terms of taking up the challenge and aware of what you wish to achieve. Results are only gained through hard work and a willingness to learn. One of the hardest skills to acquire to be a truly effective learner is to be prepared to be out of your comfort zone, learn from the mistakes you make and be resolute in improving your performance. We seek to provide the opportunities to develop these skills in our pupils thereby developing their confidence and independence. These skills are not only valued by post 16 providers, they are also highly prized by employers. Christmas Concert As usual, the school will be putting on a Christmas concert to showcase the musical talent present in the school. Swing band, Choir and Orchestra will all be performing, along with a selection of solo acts and bands. Cross Country The Suffolk Cross Country trials took place on 1st December at The Royal Hospital School. The top 40 have been selected to compete in the final trial to be held at Culford School, Bury St Edmunds on Thursday 17th January 2013. Minor Boys Y7 - Joel Cooper 36th, Felix Vardon-Barber 39th, Mateusz Palmer 45th Minor Girls Y8 - Nadia Johnson 39th Junior Boys - Alex Baxter 2nd, Jackson Crisp 33rd Inter-Boys - Tom Cowley 18th, Daniel Storrer 25th, Anthony Pearce 40th, Luke McGhee 44th Inter-Girls - Jasmine Hayward 5th, Ruby Shepperson 20th, Amy Pettitt 31st, Rachael White 33rd German Pen Pals Two of the German GCSE groups are having pen pals from another school in Germany that Mrs Miller has been in contact with. Most of the students have already written their cards to the German students containing some information about themselves. The students are very excited to be in contact with students from Germany and hope the contact carries on between them. Hadleigh High School Choir On Tuesday 11th December, a section of the fantastic school choir trekked down to Magdalen Care Home to spread some Christmas spirit. They sang a selection of popular Christmas songs, as well as some carols. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit, as did their audience who could be heard singing along. They were also joined my Harry Forbes and Lois Cooper for instrumental support. Miss Macey wishes to say a big thank you to everybody who came along; she and Mrs Sheridan were very proud! Choir: Alissa Ansell, Rebekah Asquith, Lois Cooper, Liara De Banks, Harry Forbes, Kaitlyn Green, Abigail Holt-Simmons, Alice Lester, Megan Lyddaman, Hannah Machin, Imogen Morsman, Bethany Munson, Livi Player, Chloe Pratt, Olivia Rawlins, Ebony-Brooke Rivers, Emma Sargent, Ellen Seeley, Abigail Simpson, Jessica Simmons, Olivia Simmons and Chloe Snowling. HHS Equestrian Team The equestrian team was competing again last weekend with 2 additional members. Bethany Heritage Yr9 and Ella Thackray Yr9 joined the squad for the first time. Bethany competed in the 60cm and Ella in the 70cm and 80cm, individual classes. It was a terrible day weather-wise and they both had ridiculously early starts and problems with transport, so did really well in the circumstances. Charlotte Cutler Yr9 secured 4th place in the 80cm class and Harriet Cutler Yr11 finished 6th place in the 90cm, narrowly missing out on 2nd by going so fast and rolling a pole. Emma Chapman Yr8 also competed in the 90cm individual but unfortunately had one jump down. These 3 pupils then competed in the 90cm team event and were placed 5th, despite a couple of poles falling, as Harriet managed another clear round for the school. The HHs equestrian squad has made an amazing start to this term and hope to capitalise on their success next year!!! Library news Nineteen pupils from Years 7, 8, and 9 have been participating in the annual book Mastermind competition, organised by the school’s library service. Pupils read a book of their choice and answer as many questions as they can in 2 minutes about the book. The winning pupil will receive a book of their choice, and go on to represent the school in the area final.
Tag Rugby-Primary Schools On Monday 19th November many Primary schools from around Suffolk participated in a Tag-Rugby tournament. The sports prefects each helped out at the tournament helping referee the games and helping out with the refreshments. The two schools that were in the final were Bildeston and Hadleigh C.P. The end result of the game was that Hadleigh C.P won overall. It was a great day and it was good to see how many children took part. House Points Update This is the latest update of the ongoing House System. All houses have gained a lot of points, showing how hard our pupils have been working! Oswald has temporarily taken the lead with 2574 points, from their previous 4th place with 281 points.

Hadleigh Community Choir – Our First Year Well how’s that for a first year? Hadleigh Community Choir started rehearsing in May 2012 and first performed in public in September 2012 at the Civic Service in St Mary’s Parish Church for Cllr Mary Munson, the town’s new Mayor. Other highlights of the year included singing carols at Hadleigh Community Primary School’s Annual Christmas Fayre and opening the proceedings at Hadleigh Town’s annual Christmas tree lighting-up ceremony with a medley of Christmas songs and carols. To round off 2012, on Saturday 8th December we presented our own Christmas concert at Hadleigh Baptist Church for friends, family and supporters. The entertainment included Christmas music and carols, seasonal readings and solo performances that ranged from music in the style of Oscar Peterson played by our brilliant accompanist Graham Holmes, and the Hippopotamus Song by Simon Thompson our assistant MD. Other soloists were Kate Horn, Maggie Addison and Julia Miller our (retiring) MD. The evening ended with an afterglow of mulled wine and festive fare, prize draws for luxury hampers and hand-crafted gifts, and a sale of Christmas gifts and cards, the substantial profits from which have been added to choir funds. To make the concert even more poignant it was the last time of working with our Musical Director Julia as she is leaving the UK in January 2013 to take up the position of Musical Director and singing teacher in the vocal department of the newly formed Royal Academy of Music in Muscat, Oman. We wish her much success in her new role and thank her for showing the choir what we are capable of achieving. Looking towards the future, in 2013 the choir will continue to grow in the capable hands of Simon Thompson and also with guest MDs, workshops, social evenings and special projects, all aimed at making Hadleigh Community Choir as friendly and successful as it possibly can be. If you would like to join us (we are really keen to welcome new and experienced singers); or if you would like to spend an evening or two with us as a guest MD; or if you would like the choir to sing at one of your community or social events, call Peter on 01473 824033. News from Whatfield School What a wonderful winter we have been having. Despite the recent cold snap the new Reception children have continued to enjoy their outside area and had fun in the school grounds. We have also ventured out as far as Bradfield Woods for our ‘Forest School’ activities with Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Key Stage One have built dens and toasted marshmallows, whilst Key stage 2 made a fantastic woodland obstacle course, and their own forest school badges. We have thoroughly enjoyed the build up to Christmas, starting with an Advent morning led by the volunteers from the Cathedral, which helped the children think about the special time of year we are in. We especially enjoyed singing for our very successful Christmas Fair, and also singing to the older folk at Waterfield House Care Home. We hope all enjoyed our singing, and thank you for inviting us to do so. I know the children would love me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas from Whatfield School, and hope to see you at one of our events in 2013. If you would like to come along and meet us at any time, please phone the school, on 01473 823 309 to make an arrangement. Lynne Golding, Headteacher

Out of the Frying Pan January is a time for looking back and looking forward. Writing the Christmas cards makes one aware of those friends who are no longer with us. Their company and support when needed will be greatly missed. Looking back through my case book I’m overjoyed that I met Simon Wills and Shelley Pengo who enrolled me in their (successful) campaign to restore evening bus services to and from Ipswich. By a turn of fortune I was appointed to the Shared Revenues Partnership Joint Committee. My time on this committee gave me an insight into residents’ problems and I have been able to successfully assist residents faced with eviction because their benefits have not been processed in good time. It is extremely worthwhile and satisfying to be able to tell people that I can be of help and that they can sleep well for the first time in weeks. Similarly, both Kathryn Grandon and I have been active ensuring that Morrison’s contractors obey the Saturday and Sunday noise regulations. The people in Charter Close have been quite vocal in their appreciation. The Designated Public Places Order came into being just before Christmas – a measure to control street drinking and the anti-social behaviour that stems from it. I (and others) have been working on this since September 2007. I couldn’t get the Babergh District Plan changed so that industrial and commercial development is sited alongside the A1071 and not alongside the residents of the Persimmon estate. But the battle is not lost and 2013 promises more action to defend our town from inappropriate development. It’s been really good having the Babergh officials on one’s side and working towards resident friendly solutions. At County level there are incredible pressures to achieve more with less. I am continually in awe of the Cabinet members and the executive at Suffolk. You cannot hear about young people being made homeless and being thrown on the resources of the County without being impressed by the people who deal with these problems. We need to raise the performance of our primary schools. We cannot hope to have a brains driven economy without the education that goes with it. Education starts as early as it is appropriate. But I’m an East End Boy and the nuns made sure that at the age of eleven we could all read, write and do arithmetic (written and oral). Not all of my school friends went on to great things but some became doctors, bankers, senior probation officers and accountants Now those nuns were certainly focused on results. Finally, many thanks to everyone who brought matters to my attention and helped me make a difference. Thanks especially to my wife who takes the telephone calls and makes sure that I get to meetings on time and properly dressed. With best wishes to all for 2013. THIS ARTICLE IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF BRIAN RILEY, DISTRICT COUNCILLOR, HADLEIGH NORTH. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS THOSE OF BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCIL
My Views on the All Weather Pitch I have carefully read Mr. Motteram’s comments on my October Out of the Frying Pan column in which I brought readers’ attention to the unintended consequences of Hadleigh High School’s all weather pitch being larger than originally planned and closer to the houses than originally envisaged. Mr. Motteram uses a bludgeon with regard to facts – but yes indeed I was happy with the way the dual use facility was being managed. In 2009 and 2010 I lobbied very hard on their behalf for the continuance of the annual subsidies from Suffolk County Council and Babergh. Suffolk gave a regular grant of £10,000 p.a., and in 2009/10 Babergh gave £27,830, 2010/11 £19,580 and 2011/12 £20,580. Thereafter I came off the committee. During my time representing Babergh I took the view that Mr Mottram’s and his colleagues’ combined management skills were greater than my own and all I needed to do was keep an eye on the figures and results. (Why else was I appointed to their Management.) Well they may be able to manage – but what they haven’t been able to do is to satisfactorily focus on the effects of their actions on their neighbours. Contrary to the accusatory e-mails I have received, I do not wish to close down the facility. All I wish is that the High School: • uses the pitches furthest from the houses before they use the ones closest to the houses. • remind players that they are not Premier Division and so do not need to emulate the bad language and habits that they see and read about. • switch off the lights in accordance with the planning approvals and, finally, • use the normal pitches during the summer months. It’s just a case of tweaking the operation and getting on with all your neighbours. Brian Riley
Thankyou I would like to say a special thank you to the kind person who found my gold earring and placed it on the wall by the car park at Magdalen Road. “Unbelievable”, I found it a few days later, how about that! Thankyou, Poppy

Hadleigh tag rugby team celebrates success once again!

Reception had a Christmas share afternoon supported by the PPA staff – they demonstrated their juggling skills with Mr Peters, performed action songs with Mrs Broadbent and sang traditional carols. Back in the unit they met Pappa Noel with Mrs Tassel, made Christmas decorations, iced biscuits and some took part in some Christmas maths challenges. A big thank you to all the parents who came and contributed to a lovely atmosphere. Finally, Year 2 took a different approach this year and decided to have a ‘Christmas Share Afternoon’ in the hall. There were many activities that the parents could become involved in including biscuit making (with Mrs Vickery,
our cook’s help), making penguin Christmas cards, making dough decorations (using plenty of glitter!) and following instructions to produce baubles from tessellating shapes. There was a book area where parents and children could share Christmas stories, and our laptop computers enabled parents and children to share activities from ‘North Pole.com.’ The afternoon culminated in a presentation by the children – they sang Christmas songs and each child read a part of ‘The Night Before Christmas’. We were delighted by the support of parents for this, and all of our Christmas celebrations. IMPORTANT NOTE RE: Full Time Admission to Primary School Academic Year 2012-13 If you have a child born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 you must make an application for a full time school place for your child by the closing date of Friday 13th January 2012. If you have already registered your child’s name with us, you will have received a pack from us at the beginning of December. If you are not registered, then please do contact us as soon as possible for a pack. Neil Jackson, Headteacher, will be delighted to show any prospective parents our school – please contact the school office on 01473 822161 to arrange an appointment.

Fidelis Activity News

"! ! ! !! !
Wild West Calling If visitors had strayed into the town’s Dining Room one dark Thursday in November they could have been forgiven thinking it was a Wild West party. With a lady ‘caller’ out front and rows of cowgirls following her every movement in time to some country and western music all the signs were there. However, this was no hillbilly hoedown but another Fidelis monthly meeting. Professional line dance callers, Ted & Jean, came to give the ladies a ‘taster’ session to introduce their audience to the delights of this very popular pastime. It soon became apparent that it is not a hobby for wimps and the faint hearted but it is great fun and good exercise. The dancers tackled the basic steps with varying degrees of success and a lot of laughter. Facing the wrong way or moving in the opposite direction to the rest was not easy to conceal, much to the delight of the onlookers. By the time the highly absorbing evening came to a close the dancers were ready for some sustenance. They had mastered the grapevine, cha-cha and stomp steps, often, but not always, in time with each other and the music. Jan Devey
Seasonal Celebrations A seasonal party was enjoyed by all the ladies in festive gear. Not difficult with delicious food, laughter and plenty to cheer. Between course one and two, entertainment humorous and witty. Hilary and Rita performed their work and Jan read out her ditty. Noise levels they reached a crescendo, as they laughed and chatted out loud. Then silence for a vote of thanks, Chaplin Catering had done us proud. But all good things come to an end, this evening was no exception. With seasonal greetings and farewells, all said with great affection Happy New Year to those who read our FANews in every edition There’s plenty more from whence it came as our fun programme reaches fruition.

People’s services. There are both areas which have significant pressures, and help to protect the vulnerable in our community. The Lib Dems are very concerned that the continual savings being sought in these areas will impact those people we are there to help. There is also a significant concern about the number of services that are currently divested, and questions about how these contracts will be monitored, and whether we as Councillors will be able to scrutinise the services that the public are paying for.I will continue to keep you updated as to the latest news regarding the budget for 2013 as the process continues. For more information about the Scrutiny committee and the budget reductions, please head to this link for the report – http://committeeminutes.suffolkcc.gov.uk/meeting.aspx?d=26/Nov/2012&c=Sc rutiny%20Committee Concessionary Fares update – questions left unanswered A number of questions from the Lib Dem Group were left unanswered by the administration after the decision on Concessionary Fares was made without any ability to question the new evidence presented in the report. As a result of the hard campaigning work from the Lib Dem Group over the last two years, the Cabinet was forced to look again at the original decision to only provide the statutory minimum free travel with a bus pass. This meant that on weekdays pass holders were limited to travel between 0930 and 2300, the Lib Dems wanted to extend this to 24 hr free travel for disabled users and from 9am for elderly users. Usually, with each report to Cabinet, opposition Councillors have an opportunity to question the administrations potential decision, and raise important points, however this was refused, even though the report contained new information. The new information included results from the small scale survey the Council carried out, and a letter from the Equality Human Rights Commission which stated that the processes undertaken by Cabinet in the original decision needed ‘considerable improvements’. Instead, as Councillor’s were unable to ask questions about these important matters, the decision to provide only the minimum free travel entitlement was maintained without debate. For more information, and a copy of the report, as well as the letter sent from the Equality Human Rights Commission http://committeeminutes.suffolkcc.gov.uk/meeting.aspx?d=11/Dec/2012&c= The%20Cabinet
Park and Ride Consultation The County Council has launched a consultation regarding the Park and Ride service, which is available at both the current Park and Ride sites in hard copy, and online here - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/IpswichPR2012 There are only three questions in the consultation, which are – 1. Would it be acceptable to use buses that are not dedicated to the Park and Ride scheme to deliver the service so long as a high frequency service is still maintained? 2. If the services were changed so as not to offer the cross town link would this seriously disadvantage you as a passenger? (Currently the Park and Ride services are linked to each other so that a bus leaving one site goes all the way through Ipswich to the other site. A proposal is that the Park and Ride scheme reverts to its original operation with buses from each site going to the town centre only and returning to the same site. This may have the effect of improving reliability but may require some passengers to change buses in the town centre). 3. If staff were not present on site would this have an impact on your journey? (Currently the Park and Ride sites are manned whilst the service is operating. They assist passengers and ensure that the facilities are kept to a high standard. A proposal is that the buildings could be used in a different way that still provide basic facilities (rest rooms etc) to passengers but without staff being present at all times.) Fire Merger Update Firstly a reminder that the County Council is still consulting on the potential Fire Merger between Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Fire Services, and I would encourage you to respond to this. For more information please head to http://www.suffolk.gov.uk/your-council/decisionmaking/consultations/delivering-the-best-fire-service-to-you/ In addition to this the Council revealed that the timescale for this would now be April 2015, rather than a potentially earlier date of 2014.

This month we put questions to.......
Trevor Clarke Hadleigh Entertainments Supremo Town Councillor, Town Forum, DJ, do you have time for a day job? What do you do! I love to keep busy in my life, I'm the manager of the Ironmongery department at Partridges. I've worked there since 1998 and love the challenge of customers bringing in old fittings and problems which I have to try and solve. Before Partridges I used to be a chef for the Spinning Wheel but I wanted to start my disco. I ran the disco for many years but I was working for SGRfm/Heart radio as a street team member and also doing studio work too it was getting to much work so yet again decided to give up my disco. Who has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why? My mum and dad (Tim & Jill) they have always supported me in all I have done in life. When I was younger I used to be in the boys brigade in Elmsett and my dad used to be a leader and help out. From the age of 8 mum and dad used to take me to band practice in Elmsett, this is when my uncle Derek taught me how to play the drums which lead to me playing in pantos and in a party band. Thanks mum and dad x. What's the most important thing you learned in school? To be honest I was quite quiet and kept my self to my self, I was bullied at school and this is when I got my self a back bone. I learned to push my self in things I wanted to do and set my self challenges. This is how I manage to do lots nowadays I love my busy life and wouldn't swap it for the world. What made you want to become one of Hadleigh’s Town Councillors?

HUGO (U) Hugo is a fourteen year old boy who lives secretly in a Paris station. He is responsible for winding up the station's clocks and, at the same time seeks to unlock a secret left to him by his late father. This secret will transform HUGO and all those around him. This family friendly film pays homage to the early days of the cinema. With a star studded cast the film won 5 Oscars plus 11 nominations at the 2012 Oscar and BAFTA awards. Our film carries a U certificate – accompanied children are more than welcome. Friday 25th January at 7.30 pm
PRIVATE PEACEFUL (12A) The horror of trench warfare during WW1 is graphically told in this adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel about two brothers whose lives we follow from Devon to the cratered fields of northern France. This story contrasts events from The Great War – on one hand life in the trenches and on the other the brothers' love for the same girl they left behind. Filmed partly in Hadleigh and other parts of Suffolk, PRIVATE PEACEFUL has only been seen at selected cinemas - we are pleased that we have managed to secure the licence to show it. Film Location As many of our film patrons already know, the Ansell Centre is scheduled to receive improvements to both the kitchen and toilets during January and February. It is hoped that film presentations will continue to be held in the Ansell Centre during this time, but if this is not possible they will take place next door in the United Reformed Church instead. Admission charges remain unchanged - £3.50 for adults; £2.50 for accompanied children.
CONTACTING THE ACC Call Tom on 823719 or Jan on 823413 Take a look at our website - www.ansellcc.org.uk WHERE IS THE ANSELL CENTRE? It is next to the United Reformed Church and behind the Ram Public House in Market Place. Access is through the church garden. 34

I have been involved with the town forum/entertainments committee for many years and thought I could make a difference of the Town Council. I have been a councillor for 3 years now and enjoy getting involved and having a say in what happens in Hadleigh. I think its important to have views from all ages and I would love to see some younger people on the council. What three character traits would your friends use to describe you? I have lots of work friends both old and new, they said I'm hard working, generous and talented. I try to put in 100% in all I do in and out of work and was delighted to receive the Babergh Community Achievement Award in 2010 for all my efforts. What difference do you think a large supermarket is going to make to Hadleigh High Street? Hadleigh is getting bigger and there is room for another outlet in the town. With Morrison's now at the QD site I think its best to have a supermarket away from the High Street so it will not unduly affect the other business in the High street. You are the driving force behind many events in Hadleigh, what made you want to get involved in all these projects? When I was younger I used to remember the carnivals going down Angel Street and also being on a float with the Elmsett band. I was always excited at Christmas playing at the Lighting Up in the Market Place. When I saw the Lions Club was struggling I didn't want to see the events end so got involved. Do you ever see a return of the Hadleigh Carnival on the scale it was? In 2010 we had "Hadfest" I arranged a walking carnival from the school then around the High Street and back again. Only a hand full of groups took part in this event. When we used to have the lorry's yet again we had lack of people taking part this made the parade seen a waste of time. Also nowadays getting the street closed and also arranging suitable insurance is hard work and you may have to pay for the police to attend such events. You obviously love Hadleigh but what in your opinion are Hadleigh’s greatest assets? Funny my boss was asking me the same sort of question a while back. I think the historic high street is fantastic and Partridges is right in the middle. People come from near and far to see the shop as its been running since 1823. I love the river walk and also all the friendly people who I always bump in to who comment about the town and how nice it is or even comment about the events we put on. What would you do if you won £1 million on the lottery? Well me and Sarah are getting married in June so we would spend more on
that for a start. I would still like to stay in Hadleigh but I have always said Hadleigh needs a venue with a stage. When HADS or Incharacter or even the Scouts put on shows they have to make a stage from scratch this is a lot of hard work. I have always said that Hadleigh needs a venue with a stage and curtains like Bildeston Chamberlain Hall. This would mean that not only shows can be put on but bands and discos could also use it. This hall could also double up as a youth club and also roller skating rink too. So many ideas but I would like to run it myself. Tell us about your last holiday destination, would you recommend it? Sarah and myself went away twice last year once to Great Yarmouth camping which was great fun. And then later in the year to Turkey which the hotel and venue was really nice BUT all the hotel staff and entertainment was not in English do not visit Arabella hotel (named and shamed).

And finally, how big is your vinyl collection? What's vinyl? I'm too young to know that lol! I used CD's and my laptop for my disco I also played music videos on our screen. Yes I still have a lot of CDs and music on my computer. I do enjoy going back in time listening to some of the older tracks, I do love my music at the works party you couldn't get me off the dance floor. Thanks Trev, please keep up all the hard work, I doubt there are many people in the town who put as much time and effort as you do into making Hadleigh such a great place, it is very much appreciated by us all. Greetings and good wishes for a happy and healthy New Year to all my readers! Lets hope it is not quite as wet as last year. We had to abandon quite a few outdoor lessons, but the riders learnt more about the practical side of horse care, learning the names of parts of the horses and tack, and how to clean and look after them. I of course, had to work harder too, as when it was wet more of them rode me to ensure that they continued to get their physical therapy at the same time. How splendid the stables looked at the end of term with lights, tinsel and trees all kindly donated by riders, helpers and friends, to welcome the festive season. The Herd, in decorated head collars, watched the beginning of the Carol Service. Even I had my reindeer antlers on. Camilla and Squidgy led the procession of walkers to Shelley Church, but they couldn’t go in because they had muddy hooves, and in any case it was full again, but the riders took candles to represent us all. This new Term starts on 14th January and details of all our activities for the coming year will be listed on our Web site, so do look at our calendar of special events and fund raising activities. Our waiting list of children and adults wishing to start riding with us is still quite long, so we would really welcome more volunteers to come and help. Two hours a week during school term times, and although those with horse knowledge are very welcome, it is not essential as training is provided for all who join the team. It gives my circuits a buzz to feel the improvement in my rider’s balance and co-ordination skills, so I know that being involved is very rewarding for helpers as well as the riders. If you would like to visit to see what is going on, just give us a ring and we will be happy to show you round. Don’t forget to say hallo to me when you come. Crafty activities were suspended last month as the ladies of the Country Threads group were in a celebratory mood. Not only was Christmas on its way but also they learned that the ReLoved Project, to which they have been contributing these past months, had netted over £2,000. Theirs is no ordinary contribution either. It involves recycling donated materials to create attractive items which can then be sold in the St Elizabeth Hospice shop in Aldeburgh. Clearly the combined skills, imagination and feeling of the group have produced just the right kind of goodies for the charity’s retail outlet. Before the real celebrations started, chief crafter, Mavis Gordon, gave a brief report on the group’s healthy financial state and their plans for 2013. Thanks were given to both Lin Slaughter and Mavis for their all their hard work and innovative ideas throughout the year. Once the formalities had been dealt with the ladies enjoyed seasonal refreshments and a quiz. For further info call Mavis 01473 824398 or Lin 01473 828065. Beaumont School Report The time leading up to Christmas is a wonderful time of year to be working in a primary school. At Beaumont this is no exception. Festive activities have been in full swing, with Christmas carols being practiced, seasonal plays being performed and parties being organised. The children in the younger classes, Butterflies and Bumble Bees put on a fabulous performance of ‘Donkey for Sale’. The acting and singing were marvellous, and it was great to see all the children enjoying their different roles in the play. Our Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), Lewis Cullen and Daniel Carrigan have been busy again! This time they have been working closely with the road safety officers at Wattisham airbase and the community police officers on a campaign to reduce the speed of cars on the housing estates in Hadleigh. The children at Beaumont were asked to enter a competition to design a poster reminding drivers to keep to a safe speed. The children came up with some excellent posters. Very kindly the Major of Hadleigh, Mary Munson, was able to visit the school to hand out prizes for the winning designs. The Dragonflies class did their bit in spreading the Christmas cheer by performing for the residents at Magdalen House and Waterfield House in Hadleigh. These events are enjoyed by both the children and the residents alike, especially as the children were very well rewarded for their efforts with festive treats and goodies. For the first time Spider and Beetle classes decided to hold a Christmas fair. The event, which was organised and run by the children, was a great success raising over £400 for the school. The children devised festive games and activities, but also produced a range of beautifully crafted goods which were offered for sale. Our thanks go to the children, staff and parents who supported this event.

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts January is the month when nothing much happens in the garden. It is too cold for much growth to be taking place. Days are still short, and it often takes a good deal of committment to go out and get the routine Winter pruning jobs done. There are some plants that give encouragement and brighten the Winter days, and it is worth making sure that you have a selection of these in your garden. As I come up the steps to my front door on the right trained as a low hedge under the window is the yellow jasmine nudiflora, and on the left of the porch is a large fragrant viburnum bodnantense. These are both in flower in mid December, and will continue into January. Later I shall be looking at my small tree of chimonanthus praecox near my greenhouse to brighten the Winter and perfume the air. If you do not know these plants look them up on the internet or in a book and see if they would fit in your garden. The other good gardening occupation for January is to browse through the new season gardening catalogues, and see what ideas these trigger. Weather Records In November at Kersey there were 64.3 mm (2.5") of rain. This is slightly more than our average monthly rainfall. This rainfall means that the 3 month figure is now 195.8 mm (7.7") which is 130% of the average rainfall. In November the maximum temperature was 15 Cel (59F) which is slightly warmer than average. The minimum was 0 Cel (32F), which is slightly colder than average for November. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 4 Cel (39F), which is typical for the month. However a few days ago after several hard frosts which did not melt during the day it was down to 1.5 Cel (35F) which is quite cold for December. Hints The garden will generally look after itself in January, but if one has a nice dry day and the garden is not frozen solid or covered in snow one should think about :(a) Any Hard Landscaping that you want to do. If you get it done now, then you can enjoy it in the Summer. (b) Clear up any dead plants from the summer (preferably to a compost heap), and clean garden paths that are slippery due to fallen leaves and algae. Wash up empty pots and clean glass in greenhouse or cold frame. (c) Prune fruit trees (NOT plum), and late flowering summer shrubs (NOT the early ones like Forsythia and Kerria, or you will lose the flowers.) (d) Providing we do not get too much rain overhaul flower beds containing perennials. Wishing you all a good gardening year, John Rye
Hadleigh & District Garden Club Once again, that Machiavelian pair, Chris and Phil, entertained us right royally with their Quiz Evening, giving us all plenty of fun and laughter to enjoy. They fooled us this year by not sticking to garden related subjects by branching out into general knowledge and only returning to gardening for the final round which was mostly about the biggest this and the largest that, to sort out the final winning table, not that there was any prize but certainly plenty of shouting! After Chris had ploughed through all the sheets of answers to determine the winners we moved on to the goodies provided by the committee, to celebrate our Christmas meeting. Thanks to everyone for your input both by providing the goodies and especially for turning up on what was a far from pleasant evening weather wise and Chris and Phil for all the fun and laughter you generated. I am so sorry that the members who did not get the message that the December meeting would be held on the 2nd Monday in the month as usual (not as the typo in the programme) missed out on this fun evening. I really am very sorry for this slip. Wishing you all a really Happy New Year and praying for a better gardening year in 2013 and please note we don't hold a January meeting, so the next meeting will be on February 11th, when an old friend Rodney Tibbs will be expounding on my "Gardening Year". Dear Sir You were right to point out in your observation on Peter Gower's letter that supermarkets understand the value of free parking for shoppers. What you have overlooked is that they provide and maintain those facilities themselves. Do you think the shopkeepers in Hadleigh and Sudbury would be prepared to do the same? I think not. Incidentally, many supermarket car parks have a time limit of 3 hours, after which quite heavy penalties can be imposed. Mike Crisp I think you may be surprised what shopkeepers in Hadleigh and Sudbury are prepared to do to keep car parking free Mike.
Dear Sir I would like to make a plea through the pages of your fine publication to the drivers of Hadleigh and district. Next time you get behind the wheel of your vehicle, please give a thought to your fellow road-users, especially us poor pedestrians, human and canine. I spend a lot of time walking round the town with my dog and it appears that the standard of driving in general and the level of road manners in particular are deteriorating rapidly. Speed limits are generally ignored - it is quite normal to see cars travelling at 50mph plus in Angel Street, Station Road and Bridge Street. The concept of the right-of-way seems to be totally alien to most drivers and it is more a case of ‘get there first and everyone will have to wait for me’. How Benton Street and Angel Street are not regularly blocked by queues or littered with wrecked vehicles I don’t know! Most drivers seem to think that, as soon as they pass their test, they can stop using indicators ever again. I would estimate that one in ten indicates correctly at roundabouts and junctions, and it makes things very difficult for pedestrians and other drivers. Finally, the chaos in the High Street caused by people parking thoughtlessly or illegally - especially those able-bodied people using disabled spaces - is a daily occurrence. May I issue this challenge, therefore, to Hadleigh’s road-users to set an example to the rest of the country. Take your foot off the accellerator occasionally, look at what’s happening around you outside your metal box and extend some courtesy to your fellow citizens! Who knows - you might even feel better about yourself and begin to enjoy your driving. Paul Marshall
Dear Sir The High School Astro Pitch dispute is both long running and simple: The users enjoy the opportunity to use a floodlit pitch. Nearby residents are fed up of the nightly barrage of shouting/swearing, thudding, whistles, and trainers bawling instructions, combined with glaring floodlights. The pitch is without a doubt an excellent facility, the problem is it has been built too close to housing. In the December issue of this magazine Mike Motteram, Vice Chair of the High School Governors berated Councillor Brian Riley for suggesting the following solution: Let the players enjoy using the pitch during winter when it is most needed, but give respite to residents by only using the traditional grass pitches further away from housing during spring and summer. Mike will have none of it. His solution? He airily dismisses residents’ concerns as “a small band of complainants”. He adds that the school continues to work closely with Babergh, doing what exactly? In almost two years since complaints began neither the school or its Governors has done anything it has not been forced to do. Sadly fine words butter no parsnips. There is another option: Move the pitch next to Mike’s house, problem solved! I suspect however that he would not find this one quite so palatable. Mervyn Gooch
Dear Sir This is just a personal note to thank the Committee of the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce for some very hard work during the year. I know a lot of people were unable to get to the Annual General Meeting in November so we have published Roger Bannister's Presidents report on the website which includes an update on some of the projects and plans for 2013. www.hadleigh4u.org/agm. Roger's two years in the hot seat were event filled and we'd like to thank him for all the time and patience he has put in. Can't have been that bad though as he "volunteered" again for the Committee for another two year (minimum) sentence. Sadly we have lost a couple of other people from the committee this year with Jonathan Rands stepping down after his exceptional work organising our monthly breakfast and quarterly lunch 38

meetings at the Eight Bells and Bildeston Crown respectively. Jane Haylock has also stepped down as a full Chamber committee member but has kindly offered to remain co-opted for the High Street projects, notably the loyalty card which has recently kicked off. Jane has brought focus to our High Street efforts which we will now tray and take forward, thank you Jane. Darrell Thompson has really organised us in the past and run some very successful May Shows. She has stepped down from full Committee involvement and we are hoping that her commitments will allow her time to get involved in this year's show as a co-opted member. Thanks again Darrell. So the results of the voting at the AGM for the new Committee for 2013 … Tony Addison – President Treasurer – James Walter Minutes Secretary – Brian Riley Committee : - Roger Bannister (Erben) – with responsibility Suffolk Chamber Council and Transport Groups, Kelvin Avis (Keith Avis Printers), Alex Dent (Holon), Cyndy Hilton (Priory Hall), Chloe Brown (Ipswich Building Society), Carol Bailey (Town Clerk), Gary Install (Ferguson's Delicatessen), Andrew Fitch (Bromley & Fitch). In addition we have a number of volunteers to help with key projects. Thank you all for helping out. We have a really good team for 2013. Thank you to all our members for your support as well. Don't forget to tell us what you need the Chamber to do. Tony Addison "new" President, Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce
Dear Sir It was with great disappointment that we read in the December issue of the Community News the criticisms penned by Mike Motteram of an article in the previous issue by Councillor Riley highlighting the inadequacies of the High School leisure development and management. We are further disappointed that before despatching such criticisms Mike Motteram as Vice Chairman of the Governors of the school clearly did not check that his own facts were accurate because, as neighbours of the High School, we are able to confirm categorically first hand that as stated by Councillor Riley, the school does indeed seem to “ignore the needs of its immediate neighbours in Station Road”, and furthermore the needs of its immediate neighbours in ALL the roads surrounding the school site. As if this isn’t bad enough, the school, in our personal opinion, regularly flagrantly breaches planning consents and ignores written requests made by Suffolk County Council, Babergh District Council, and Councillors, only taking action at all when absolutely forced to do so. The Vice Chairman did manage to get one fact spot on, the school is indeed “willing to listen”. However, regrettably that is all it does do, apart from making promises which fail to materialise. At the expense of possibly having to suffer further factually incorrect and unfounded criticisms, we reiterate the closing words of Councillor Riley which would appear to have been totally lost on Mike Motteram – “the purpose of Government and its agents is to serve the public; not to serve some at the expense of others”. Ken & Margaret Lewis
Dear Sir As the Conservative Candidate for Hadleigh in the coming May 2013 election, I was surprised to read the Liberal Democrats ‘Please reply Colin’ advert in last month’s edition. Colin Noble, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Care, Suffolk County Council, has written to me advising that he spoke with Councillor Grutchfield saying he would be very happy to answer the questions and any questions if he cared to email or ask them in Full Council but to date the questions have not been asked. The current position is that whilst Angel Court is a wonderful home with great staff, it is, like all of the Council’s former homes, very old; and whilst homely the building itself challenges the quality of care that can be provided. Hadleigh is already blessed with a wonderful range of new care homes and there is capacity in those to look after residents from Angel Court. Moreover there is also capacity for Hadleigh’s older people’s future needs. When Colin visited Angel Court recently to explain the proposals he made two commitments. First, no resident if they made a contribution to their care would pay one penny more than they do now wherever they move to and if the County Council provides for their care now, it will continue to do so for the rest of their life. Second, before Angel Court closes in 15 months’ time the social worker teams will work with each individual resident and their loved ones to find the right home for them; some residents will want to stay in Hadleigh and that will be facilitated. Others will want to move closer to family members, and that will be facilitated. Still others will want to move to be with CareUK carers at one of their newer homes in Ipswich, and that will be facilitated Once everyone living in Angel Court has found a new home, it will close in April 2014. The County Council will get the site back and work with the community in Hadleigh to see what is the best use of the site in the future. Representation of our town at the County is important and should be above political games that are used to frighten people unnecessarily.. With kind regards, Brian Riley, Conservative County Candidate for Hadleigh

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: At the time of writing this Santa accompanied by his sleigh and helpers has completed the first night of the tour of Hadleigh. He has been welcomed with enthusiasm by the children and with generosity by the adults. An apology is due to the children of Cottesford Close as the float with a larger towing vehicle this year was unable to negotiate the road. We hope that everyone caught up with Santa in the High Street. SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING: The annual accounts for 2011/12 were approved and the following officers were elected for 2013/14: Mrs Glen Abbassi - President (2nd consecutive term), Mr Anthony LeVoi - VicePresident, Mr Geoffrey Cooley - Secretary, Mr David Stokes - continue as Treasurer. CLUB EVENTS: The Club's Christmas Party was attended by most members and partners and took place at Stoke by Nayland Hotel on December 6th. A good time was had by all and a number of people stayed overnight to enjoy a hearty breakfast together before departing. SPEAKER: Richard Gates, a popular and regular visitor, was the only speaker during this period. This time he described the battle of the Nile which took place in 1798. The French fleet had gathered at Toulon and Admiral Nelson was despatched there to monitor its movements. However, delayed by storms etc he missed the departure from Toulon and encountered some difficulties in discovering its route. Eventually he found out that it was heading East and believed that it was making for Egypt. He followed but overtook it during the night without realising it and arrived in Alexandria first so that he went in search of it and again missed it. By the time he realised this the French had anchored in what they thought was a safe bay near Alexandria. They decided that the landward side was safe so that all the defences were facing seaward whilst they did not expect an attack at night. When Nelson found them he ordered a night attack and his fleet was able to slip into the bay and attack a virtually unprotected French fleet from the landward side. The result was a massive victory for Nelson with most of the French ships destroyed and only two escaping. As usual the battle was brought to life by the masterly prose of Richard. FUTURE PROGRAMME: January 3rd Business Meeting, January 10th Speaker- Tony Addison of Free Rein. January 17th Speaker - Rotary District Governor. January 24th Discussion Evening. January 31st Speaker. All members hope that readers enjoyed Christmas and we wish you all a very Happy New Year. News from The Station

Welcome to the first edition of news from the Police Station for 2013! I type this report four short weeks after the terrible fire that engulfed UKAY Fuels on Crockatt Road, Hadleigh. You will all be aware of the extensive damage caused by the fire, and how fortunate we were that the Fire Service provided their usual prompt, rapid response and were able to gain control of the flames. We have been liaising with CID and the Fire Service and working very closely with the local community to make sure we do everything we can in order to find the culprit of this, and other arson crimes in Hadleigh. The investigation continues to build and over 200 people have already been spoken to. If you have any information that might help the investigation, please contact us at the Police Station, the Suffolk Police switchboard on 101, or Crimestoppers. You can remain anonymous, and you may be the person who holds the key to solving this crime. Whilst the UKAY Fuels incident has grabbed local and National headlines, I remind readers that Hadleigh remains a very safe place to be. Despite a small increase in arson offences in 2012, crime in general has fallen, as have reports of anti-social behaviour. We continue to build on the strong links forged in the community, and work hard with our partners to ensure that crime, and your fear of crime remain low. Throughout 2012 we have seen a record number of parking tickets distributed in and around the High Street. In 2013 we will be continuing to tackle this issue and will be looking to target the busy periods with operations specifically set up to target those who show no regard for the Town’s parking regulations. By the end of January, PCSO Georgi Hawkes will be out on the streets learning the role and I know she is eager to get to know as many of you as possible, and to concentrate on the areas that most affect you and your lives. In 2012 I achieved some personal and professional goals, and I am looking to build on these over the next 12 months. Each year, I ask the same of you all. What can you do to improve your environment, and the area where you live? What else can you contribute to Hadleigh? Our Town remains a safe and enjoyable place to be because of the hard work and effort put in by local businesses and volunteers. We all hold a duty to make the Town grow, and I ask each and every one of you to think about your local issues, and help us deal with them in an effective manner. 2012 was a good year, let us all work together to make 2013 a great year! Please remember that the Police Station remains open to the public every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 1pm and 3pm. The Town is policed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with staff who are permanently based at Hadleigh. If you want to speak to us, but do not wish to visit the Station, please telephone on 101 or email the team on babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk. Or you can email me direct using the details at the bottom of this article. Wishing you all a very prosperous New Year, and until next time, Matt PC 1455 Paisley Hadleigh Police Station, Magdalen Road, Telephone: 101 Matthew.paisley@suffolk.pnn.police.uk
Thankyou for supporting us! The Allison Fracella Research Trust and The Brendan Oakes Trust would like to thank all those that supported the charity quiz night at the Ansell Centre on 16th November. The evening was the first event jointly run by both trusts. Although in competition with the Mayor's Quiz and the BBC's Children in Need appeal (I think people wanted to get away from an evening with Terry Wogan); both trusts were able to add just under £300 each to their respective coffers. Thanks also to Greggs the Bakers who donated the bread roles for the ploughman's supper and to the Ansell centre for the use of the hall. Sue & Rob Kettlewell and Mark & Valerie Oakes

Poets Corner Happy New Year!!!! I do hope your Christmas was merry And that your New Year will be bright Are you still eating the turkey? Have your children started to fight? Did Auntie Madge arrive on time? Or did she get the wrong train? Did your spouse ever miss The wine she nicked to take home again? Did your house look like a bomb site? Torn wrapping paper all about With your children did you fight Just to get them to eat a sprout? Well now it’s all back to normal All relatives have upped and left I hope you are not all suicidal And that you’ve still got a drop of gin left!!! As I write this poem I can see it all Just to think about it causes me stress But I wish Happy New Year to you all Love from my cat and I God Bless!!!!! Alison Barber XX

Hadleigh U3A The speaker and entertainer at our December meeting was choir master and former noted professional singer Simon Gilbert. He started the entertainment with a fine rendition of “O Solo Mio”, and went on to give us a flavour of various genres of classical music, opera, songs from musicals, and popular singers. A request for members' suggestions brought forth many memories of musicals and songs from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, prompting more fine renditions of songs from Les Miserables (now an epic film), “It must be right, It can't be wrong” from “Now, Voyager” (later sung by Frank Sinatra), and a Matt Munro hit “Portrait of my Love” It's one thing knowing the words but quite another trying to keep up with Simon, a Gilbert and Sullivan lover from an early age, (right initials ,but not necessarily in the right order) as he invited us to join in the choruses of “The Ruler of the Queen's Nav.... eeee” Although the advertised title of the talk was “A Christmas Theme”, this was somehow lost, with no mention of carols, turkey, or mince pies, but it all added up to an “Unforgetable” afternoon of great singing.

We raised about £70 with more money to come after our Carol Service at St Mary’s Church at the end of term. Thank you to the Parent Support Group for organising our fantastic Christmas Fair. The fun started with the Key Stage 2 children singing
Christmas carols and songs; they sang beautifully and put everybody into a Christmas mood!

With heavy overnight frost restricting play to temporary greens on a shortened course, scores were high in the annual Captain's Yuletide competition at Newton Green Golf Club. Andy Cornwell, who has only recently returned after two years out of action because of hand surgery, scored a massive 47 points. Although Darren Willetts, Harry Wordley, Bill Knappett, Andy Cornwell and Chris Williams the competition was not a qualifying event, Andy's recently granted revised handicap is likely to take a plunge. He was two points ahead of Bill Knappett on 45 points, while Darren Willetts saw Harry Wordley off in third place with his 43 points superior on countback. The gross amateur prize for the day went to club champion Russell Oakey, with a score of 70, although club professional Tim Cooper came home with round of of 66. Prizes were presented by vice captain Chris Williams, standing in for the unavailable Dave Lavelle.

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club On Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/hadleighhares On Twitter www.twitter.com/hadleighhares84 Online www.hadleighhares.co.uk Hadleigh 10 race - 25th November BLUSTERY conditions met the 262 runners at the Hadleigh 10 race on Sunday. The annual 10 mile run, organised by Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club, took competitors round country roads and through the villages of Shelley, Layham and Polstead. Racers not only had to compete in the challenging conditions but also the notorious hilly sections which make up large parts of the race. Starting next to Holbecks Park and finishing at Hadleigh United Football Club's ground, the race, sponsored by Peake Fitness and Ipswich Building Society, was preceded with a 2km juniors' competition. Ipswich Jaffa, Brad Jones, came through the finish line almost a minute quicker than second place Gavin Davies, in a time of 55 minutes and 48 seconds in the senior race. Gavin, also running for the Ipswich club, finished in 56:45. Veteran runner Stephen Whiting, running for Highgate Harriers, finished in third position in 56:54. First woman was Sara Bird in 61:08 for Woodford Green with Essex Ladies. Liz Wynn was second for the women with a time of 65:57, running for Serpentine Running Club. Third finishing woman was Nickey Brinkman for British Triathlon Association in 68:46. The juniors' race saw 48 youngsters set off five minutes after the seniors. Ieuan Alldis of Bury St Edmunds Pacers won the race for the third consecutive year in 6 minutes and 10 seconds. Hadleigh Hares' Tom Cowley was 10 seconds behind, with Joshua Thompson from Ipswich Harriers third, in 6 minutes and 29 seconds. The top three boys were all in the 16 and under category.

STEERING PROBLEMS? UNEVEN TYRE WEAR? HIT A POTHOLE?
Since last months notes the weather has played its part again with the fixtures over the last month, with pitches not only waterlogged but frozen. One match to highlight more than any over the last month must be the Under 12's match away at Felixstowe on November 24, having suffered a 6-0 defeat the previous week against Brantham, they cetainly bounced back at Felixstowe with a comprehensive 13 -1 victory. The Under 13's lost a recent tight encounter with Ipswich Athletic 3-4, but followed this up with a 5-1 win against Martlesham. Under 18's have drawn one match and achieved a good 4-1 win over Claydon, whilst the Under 14 Brettsiders secured a 7-0 win against Sizewell. Other teams not mentioned have picked up points here and there when matches have been able to go ahead. One team which has been struggling for fixtures is the Under 16's with only a small number of teams in their league matches are not played every week, but of late as matches have been arranged these have been postponed at the last minute due to pitches being unplayable. On Sunday 15 December they did actually managed to play a match at Bury St Edmunds but unfortunately finished on the wrong end of a 7 goal match with Hadleigh losing 6-1. With the Christmas break teams will be idle for at least a fortnight with some matches (weather permitting) being played on January 5th / 6th, with full league fixtures starting again the following weekend. On the subject of Christmas, hopefully everyone had an enjoyable time and it just remains to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Happy New Year! Paul and all the staff at Hadleigh Tyre Group would like to wish all their customers a very happy and prosperous new year! The Hadleigh Tyre Group was first opened in Hadleigh on the 17th November 1980 by a young William Burrows 20 years experience in the tyre industry already under his belt. The group has grown over this time and now has six well established depots located over the Suffolk area with a great team of over 50 employees some of whom have been with the company 20 years and many with over 10 years service. We offer a friendly and professional service with alot of our customers going back as far as some of our staff many on first name terms. Although the company started out selling only tyres and batteries, the group has grown to include all mechanical work, M.O.T's, diagnostics, air conditioning and commercial/agricultural breakdowns. All our managers have worked their way up from being mechanics/tyre fitters and so have a very good knowledge of the industry and of our company and customers as a whole. They run their depots as if they were their own using the company ethos of 'customer service, customer service, customer service'. Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United made progress in the F.A Vase with a win by two clear goals against Oxley Jets at the Millfield on Saturday 8th December. Marcus Josiah scored in the first half and Scott Chaplin added a second goal after the interval. Our visitors missed a penalty kick just before the end when the ball hit the crossbar. This is a national competition and in the next round Hadleigh will have to travel to Emley which is a small town near Huddesfield in Yorkshire. Emley is about half the size of Hadleigh and has three pubs and a brass band. They also have a good football team who gave West Ham Utd a close game in the F.A Cup a decade ago. Hadleigh will be there on 19th January in what will be our biggest match for many years. In previous rounds we have beaten Stanway, Walsham, Colney Heath and Oxley Jets. Winners of the match at Emley will be only three wins away from the final at Wembley Stadium. Another big match will see Lowestoft at the Millfield on the second Wednesday in January in a Suffolk Cup encounter. There will be no joy in the League Cup as we were beaten by Haverhill in the second round by the games only goal at the Millfield in early December. In recent league matches form has fallen away slightly with a defeat at Walsham by four goals to two ending a good run. Late goals from James Blades and Mark Maher made the scoreline respectable. The next match saw Stanway at the Millfield and resulted in a draw with one goal apiece. Scott Chaplin was Hadleigh’s scorer with a free kick for the first goal of the game. A home match against Godmanchester ended with us losing three goals to one after Jerrell Layne had given Hadleigh an early lead. We ended with ten men following a red card in the second half. The Reserves lost by two goals to nil at Diss before going down by four goals to one against Walsham. The next match saw Sean Liggett and Harry Evans on target to earn a draw at Newmarket. Our Thurlow Nunn youth team shared the spoils against Haverhill at one apiece. That was the only match to beat the bad weather. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Terry Adams, Bob Talbot and Bob Fletcher.
Hadleigh United Fixtures Fixtures for January for Hadleigh Uniteds first team begin with a home match against Brantham on Wednesday 2nd. A trip to Woodbridge follows on Saturday 5th before a home game against Lowestoft in the Suffolk Cup on Wednesday 9th. A home match against Wivenhoe will provide a good contest on Saturday 12th before a trip to Emley in Yorkshire in the F.A Vase on Saturday 19th. A busy month ends at home to Diss on Saturday 26th. The Reserves travel to Brantham on Saturday 5th before a trip to Newmarket on Saturday 12th. Then Diss come to the Millfield for an attractive match on Saturday 19th while Saturday 26th sees a trip to Saffron Walden. Our Thurlow Nunn youth team travel to Clacton on Thursday 10th. A home match against Halstead follows on Wednesday 16th before we make the short journey to Conard on Thursday 24th. The month ends at home to Wivenhoe on Wednesday 30th. Supporters should note that fixtures are subject to alteration as cup matches take priority. Latest news will be available on the club website www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk
