Hi. Taj is on holiday in sunny Devon so she has asked me to write this month’s tips. I’m Jayde a trainee pharmacy technician at Mill Pharmacy. I have two young children and I thought I might share my tips on treating and preventing a common childhood problem – threadworm infestation. It is thought that approximately 10% of children under 10 years of age may suffer from this. Threadworms are small white thread-like worms between 2 -12mm long and they live in the human gut. Infestation can be symptomless but itchiness around the anus may be noticed, especially at night. One might even be able to see them as white wriggling commas on the child’s stool. Once detected the best strategy is to give the appropriate medicine and follow a strict hygiene regime. It is also recommended that the whole family is treated. The medicines used contain either mebendazole or piperazine and are usually flavoured to make it more palateable for children and are given as a single dose. Sometimes a second dose two weeks later may be necessary. However, as already mentioned, it its equally important to follow strict hygiene measures to break the life cycle of the threadworm otherwise it can become a recurring problem. Hygiene Measures Firstly 1. Wash all sleepwear, bedding and towels at a high temperature and rinse well. 2. Thorougly vacuum and damp dust the whole house, throwing out the cloth after use. Pay particular attention to bedrooms and vacuum mattresses and where children play. 3. Thoroughly clean bathroom by damp dusting, clean cloth regularly in hot water and then throw away once finished. For the next 2 weeks 1. Wear close fitting underwear in bed and change in the morning. This is to stop scratching the anus. 2. Wash around anus every morning to get rid of any eggs laid overnight. 3. Change underwear daily. General measures to prevent further infestation. 1. Treat the whole family but speak to the pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or if the child is very young. Always speak to the pharmacist if you are on any other medication . 2. Wash hands and scrub under nails every morning, after going to the toilet and before preparing any food. 3. Try not to suck fingers or bite fingernails. 4. Avoid sharing towels or flannels. 5. Rinse toothbrushes well after use. There is no reason to keep to keep children off school or away from the nursery as long as the hygiene measures are followed as they are unlikely to infest others. *Taj West is the superintendent pharmacist at Mill Pharmacy located within the Hadleigh Health Centre.

Pause for Thought

FEATURED PROPERTY 50 BRETT GREEN, UPPER LAYHAM

An accident waiting to happen! My mum would always say this when I was climbing trees or balancing on a wall and I find myself saying the same now! But how many of us could say this about our finances? Do we really know what we have or are we in some precarious balancing act, living with a financial 'accident waiting to happen'? At Hadleigh Baptist Church we partner with national charity Christians Against Poverty, to provide money management courses. For one evening a week over three weeks, we go through a simple method of money management . If you already manage your money well, then fantastic! But if you want to learn an easy system that really works then to register for our next course, or for more information, call Pam on 01473 658612 or Sophie on 01473 829531. Pam Sanderson

Shops and traders The Hadleigh Historian of Hadleigh High Street in 1901 The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian Special Edition No. 1 To be launched on the stand of Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce at the forthcoming May Show, Shops and traders of Hadleigh high Street in 1901 features photographs taken at the beginning of the 20th century. The book begins with a general introduction to the town during the Edwardian era and then A4 black and white photographs take us down the High Street, where we meet many interesting characters and sample their wares or visit their businesses. Most shops and trades that were available generally were then in Hadleigh High Street, catering from the cradle to the grave. Starting at its southern end some of the places visited include Payne’s shoe and furniture warehouse and the Wheatsheaf Inn. Later we pass Barclays Bank, The White Lion Hotel and the Post Office at its new premises on the corner of the Market Place. Further along, we drop in at Thacker’s the chemist, Taylor’s the ironmongers, the Coffee Tavern and Verlander’s toy shop. At the northern end of the street we visit ham and bacon curer Edie Spooner and daper Cocky Churchyard, together with other tradesman and women. Details of the premises shown accompany each picture, whether shop or warehouse, workshop, public house, bank or office. Finally, there is a gazetteer of High Street shops and traders from the 1901 census, located by their present-day street numbers. Available on 21st May from Keith Avis Newsagent and from Idler Bookshop, price £5.00

9 Weeks to go for the Dynamic Duo! End-to-End Bike Ride - Lands End to John O' Groats There are only 9 weeks to go before Jimmy and Dick set off on their epic ride to support Cancer Research. The route is finalised and training is going well so they tell me! You may well have seen one or other of them dashing through the local and not so local lanes and bye-ways. They have decided to go the "pretty route" through Wales and up the west side although I am told there are a few lumps and bumps that way so hill training is a priority. Who said it was going to easy! All their effort certainly deserves all the support we can give them and that's where you come in. To reach their fundraising target a number of events are planned throughout the summer so watch this space and local notice boards. We also still need some more practical help for the journey. Most pressing is additional back-up drivers for the support van. Fancy experiencing the life of a nomad, enjoying the call of the open road? Can you give any time between the 18th June and 3rd July. Volunteers for the 2 week period would be brilliant but shorter periods can be accommodated. If you can help then please contact any of us on the numbers below. You will also be able to see the Dynamic Duo in action at the Hadleigh Show on 21st May showing off their prowess on their magnificent machines, something surely not to be missed! and a chance to show your support. Howard with Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly Greetings to my readers and followers wherever you may be. I say that since I know that these jottings are beamed the length and breadth of the Country and overseas too. I am humbled by your support. Grateful thanks too are due to my cook Maria (pert dumplings) who grasped the pen last month. She kindly laid morning coffee in the grounds one day and the picture shows me with my constant companions Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly just before receiving a lovely pot of coffee and a plate of Thorntons mini caramel squares and shortbread. To die for. As Spring arrives, I have been particularly busy. A very interesting Jaguar Spares Day in Coventry with acres of automobilia; a classic car auction at Swaffham; a lunch and a tea in Long Melford; a visit to London to meet a client who had flown in from Monaco. It was to The Hotel Orwell in Felixstowe that we motored for lunch on Mothering Sunday. (Tel. 01394 285511). The Manager is Umesh Sewnundun formerly the Manager at Le Talbooth. My mother and I and a good friend had a wonderful lunch. The piano played, there was staff a plenty and Umesh looked after us from the time that Frank, our Chauffeur, delivered us to the door until we left. When I go out, I want no more than to feel special and that is just what happened. Do give it a try and tell Umesh I sent you. Dinner with a friend who entertains almost royally beckoned me away from the Hadleigh Choral Society Concert but my mother and father thoroughly enjoyed it. And to my firm. We do have something a little special and it is worth shouting about. I get to know my clients well and they feel able to discuss all aspects of their affairs. To that end, we give good “old fashioned” service. Our clients are not just a number on a list and we are not a call centre. Each one of our clients is important to us. So when an estate agent seeks to “pot” you in the hands of some cheap and cheerful outfit, ask will my affairs be handled by a qualified and experienced solicitor. So often, that is not the case. A Solicitor is trained to handle matters in a particular way. If you have not made a Will or a Lasting Power of Attorney do come and discuss matters with me. If you are considering the sale or purchase of a property come talk it through first. If you have owned your house for more than twenty years and have unregistered title let us register it for you so that it can never be lost. Howard Gibbons

Some of Fidelis group on the set of Guys and Dolls, New Wolsey Theatre ‘Sit down your rocking the boat’ & ‘Luck be a lady tonight’. Just two of many familiar songs rendered by gangsters and gamblers in a recent performance of Guys and Dolls at the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich. This vibrant, energetic, often humorous musical has it all - crooks, hoods, hookers, pimps and the Salvation Army. Set in a shadowy section of Broadway, which had been authentically created on the curtainless stage, the stars sung, danced and acted out their respective roles to perfection. Happily, the Fidelis group were there to enjoy this co-production between the NW theatre, Clwyd Theatre Cymru and the Salisbury Playhouse before the extremely talented, versatile cast takes the show to Salisbury. Now that the theatre has survived the cut-backs and will actually benefit from some Arts Council, Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Borough Council funding they will be able to keep up the good work and we can hope for more of these outstanding productions. The Changing Shape of Fashion Wide hips, flat chests, minute waists and bulging bottoms were just some of the fashionable effects skilfully created throughout the ages with hidden garments and attachments. Historical dance and clothes expert, Jackie Marshall – Ward, has accumulated a comprehensive collection of underwear and over garments to illustrate the changing shape of fashion from the 1400’s to the Victorian era. With the help of her husband cum lady’s dresser, Peter, Jackie donned many of these clothes and devices to demonstrate to the ladies of Fidelis how the items were used to alter the female shape. Their shoes and fabrics moved with the times too. There were examples of hinged, platform footwear and even leather Breath in - this time it’s wide hips, flat chest, satin winkle pickers. It was obvious that, on and lace the whole, styles are cyclical and there is nothing new only the fabrics. However, the first voluminous, crutch-less and illegal women’s ‘pantalones’ did seem to be a far cry from a thong. Fortunately, current trends are more relaxed and flexible so Lin Slaughter’s Easter egg cup cakes were much appreciated at the end of a truly fascinating evening. It’s along the Railway walk! Alders (alnus glutimosa) Alder is one of the most common trees in the UK, growing naturally wherever there is water Our early ancestors credited the tree with magical properties because the timber - although white - turns red as it comes into contact with air making the tree appear to “bleed when cut The tree produces distinctly different male and female flowers (it’s Monoecious). The male are long yellow/mauve catkins, and the female small red/green cones (See photograph). The seeds - which are released from the cones (the larger, black ones in the photo) during the winter - are flat and will germinate on any wet surface, including that of still water. The advantage of this strategy is that there is no delay in establishing themselves if they ever do make “land fall. The tree forms nodules on it roots using a relationship (symbiosis) it has with a Bacteria (Frankia-alni) to obtain nitrogen in soils where it is in short supply (similar to garden Peas). This way the tree gets its nitrogen and responds with a supply of carbon. Many trees have relationships with funguses but alder is one of the few trees using bacteria in this way. The timber is little used nowadays but in the past it had a large number of uses What was it used for? One of its major properties is that keeping the wood saturated actually hardens and preserves it. Legend has it that Alder was used in the rafts and piles driven into the ground to support the buildings in Venice, it has been found carrying the water supply in roman towns and beneath the sites of the houses built above the water in the Scottish Lochs (Crannochs). The timber must be kept totally saturated, “wet won’t do - it will rot very quickly. Keeping it dry is of little use either because wood-boring insects (woodworm) love it. The medieval peoples used it to produce dyes to colour their clothing, Red from the sap, green from the leaves and black from the bark. I’m not sure how “fast these would have been, but perhaps they didn’t wash things very often. In the 18th Century it came to prominence with the Navigators building the Canal System, where its “preservation-in-water properties made it an ideal material to construct Locks (including lock gates) and to support the banks of the waterways. At about the same time the great road-builders were constructing new road networks and they used it for the piles to support their bridges. Later in the 19th century it came to favour again, being used by the Railway engineers to cross any “permanently wet situation they came across. Its use hasn’t been limited to engineering. It burns very slowly and produces some of the finest charcoal available. During the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries there was a continual series of Wars involving firearms. The weapons (cannons, muskets and the like) all consumed large quantities of gunpowder, and one the major constituent of this material is carbon – which can be obtained from good quality charcoal. Its last rise to fame was probably in WW’s 1 and 2 when large numbers of gas masks were required, and the finest filtration materials available at that time were charcoal and carbon, both easily available from Alder. Although a small quantity of the timber is still used today in the manufacture of furniture, musical instruments and carbon filters it has generally been replaced with modern materials. Pity really – such a valuable resource in the past, and now we don’t have much use for it at all! Mick T

KNOCK KNOCK Are you expecting a caller? Are they claiming to be from the Water Board, asking to use your toilet or telephone? Have they offered to do work on your house or that they work for a charity? Claim to be from the police or local council? Even children asking for their ball back? Not all people who call at your home are genuine. Remember water, gas and electricity companies will always tell you in advance that they are going to call. They will never just turn up at your door. Always ask for identification before you let someone in your home and if in doubt leave them outside whilst you check with a neighbour or friend. If you can’t do this ask them to call back when someone can be with you.

We have 10,000 male members and 92 male Consultants. We also have 6 men-only classes. Men achieve excellent weight losses with Slimming World. They tend to lose weight faster than women – they have a higher muscle mass which burns more energy, giving them a higher metabolic rate. Men are also generally more focused when they start on a healthy eating plan, with less of the social pressures women feel, and fewer negative feelings about previous failed attempts to lose weight. Curry, chips and beer are some of the things men hate giving up most - and the good news is that with Food Optimising they don’t have to! “Although health experts say well over 70,000 people in Suffolk are likely to have hearing problems, only a third will actually seek help,” says Karen Finch, “and that means there are almost 50,000 people out there whose quality of life could be dramatically improved almost at a stroke”. Karen is a hearing aid audiologist and runs the awarding winning Hearing Care Centre. The Company has its headquarters on High Street, Ipswich and has centres all over the County. She went on: “There are a number of causes of hearing loss: continued exposure to loud noises over a period of time is one of them, but by far the majority of people are simply suffering from the effects of growing older. “Just as in many cases our eyes slowly deteriorate as we age, making it difficult to read small print, so our ears gradually lose their ability to hear sounds. The difference is that inability to hear can affect people’s relationships with their family and friends, and untreated can itself lead to illness”. This month, hearing tests and other hearing services are being made available free of charge to the residents of Hadleigh and the surrounding areas. The Hearing Care Centre, who have a local hearing centre in The Health Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh are offering their services for free on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th May 2011 from 9am until 5pm. All services are available by appointment only. “We are delighted to be offering our services for free of charge. My fully qualified and professional team will be on hand to test peoples hearing, to demonstrate the latest digital hearing aids, to answer any questions and to MOT any existing hearing aids people may have. We offer a professional hearing care service with fully informed choices, in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. We shall also be launching the World’s first invisible, extended wear hearing aid, known as, Lyric by Phonak.”, said Karen. Attending the Open Days is strictly by appointment only. Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Alison Butler SUMMER CONCERT June 19th 6.30 p.m. in Polstead Church The most famous symphony of them all? Beethoven’s 5th. Symphony – so well known with its opening notes used for the letter ‘v’ in morse code. That is the work we are preparing for our summer concert and rehearsals are going very well. This is a great opportunity to hear this work performed live. So that it is not too long the first half of the Finale will be omitted (it’s repeated anyway). As usual there will be other (shorter) and popular pieces such as ‘I dreamed a dream’ from Les Miserables and a very jazzy version of ‘Men of Harlech’. More details next month. We do not make a charge for entry but invite the audience to make a contribution toward expenses and to church funds. Please make a note of this date now and we look forward to seeing all our friends and supporters again.

Hadleigh Easter Craft & Food Fair Was Egg-cellent On the 10th April the Hadleigh Town Forums Entertainments Committee once again put on their Easter Craft & Food Fair in the Town Hall Complex. Over 600 people came to see over 50 exhibitors show off their Easter crafts which included home made cards, wooden turnings, stained glass, jewellery, home made quilts, painted eggs and knitted items, not forgetting the food hall with its sweets, home made preserves, savouries and cookware too. After the shoppers had spent all their money on the crafts they relaxed in the garden with a hot cup of coffee and slice of cake whilst soaking up the sun on what was a fantastically sunny day. I would like to thank all the people who helped run the event including David, Aileen, Jean, Jo, Barry & Sarah-Jane. Also I’d like to thank the Kitchen staff Brian & Sarah, Glen, Elaine, Jan, Sue & Terry, Gloria, Judith and Millie & Toby. We couldn’t do any of the craft fairs without all these people. Also a MASSIVE thank you to Morton Smith & Sands who helped out with advertising. We have now planned our next Craft & Food Fair which is on the 30th October 2011. This will be your one stop Christmas shop in one go! If you are a crafter and would like to take part the forms are ready to be sent out. At several School Meetings, the children requested both an Art Competition and a Talent Competition. After much thought and discussion, we finally decided to hold an Art Exhibition and a Talent Show, rather than competitions, as it would be very difficult to choose winners. After months of hard work, the day arrived! Mums, Dads and other relatives, as well as members of staff were absolutely enthralled by the singing, dancing and instrumental work that was on offer. Dance Club members proved that they are confident performers, no matter whether they are dancing a musical theatre number or a pop song. They all looked the part, too, with their brightly coloured T-shirts, neatly dressed hair, smiley faces and professional looking bows at the end of each performance. Some children [and staff] dance out of school, so we were treated to some ballet, ballroom and modern dancing. We all enjoyed some excellent instrumental work on the keyboards and flute, again ranging from well known, modern pieces to classical work. Each performer introduced his / her own work to the audience and showed us just what could be achieved with plenty of practice. Our singers delighted the audience with both a group number and some solo pieces, one of whom was accompanied by his Dad. These children ranged from those who were singing for the first time on their own in public, to those who have already had some experience as soloists. Whatever the case, all of our performers thoroughly deserved the big clap they were given after each performance. After some refreshments, the visitors then had another treat in the form of an Art Exhibition. All of the children in Years 2 – 6 had contributed to this. The children's work was on a variety of scales, in both 2 and 3D, and showed ways in which they work in groups as well as on their own. The children's work included painting, drawing, collage work, hand and machine sewing, paper mache, abstract sculpture and junk modelling. Yrs 5 and 6 worked on the theme of 'Friendship,' Yrs 3 and 4 worked from the story 'Where the Wild Things Are' and Yr 2 produced a variety of work connected with the Caribbean story 'Ananse and the Sky God.' Wake up and Smell the coffee! This is the time of year when you usually see photographs of need and poverty among the other television adverts. These are brought to you by Christian Aid to publicise their annual collection week. Television advertising is so expensive and with the great need to use as much money as possible in the current disasters, they have decided not to use it this year. However as usual all over the country volunteers will be raising money during the week May 15th – 21st. Here in Hadleigh we are having a street collection which we hope you will support. If no one collects in your street – and we need more collectors – why not drop in to St Mary’s parish office any day during that week and fill in an envelope. On Friday 20th a Coffee morning, bring and buy and raffle will be held from 10.00am-12.30 and if you enjoy Scrabble come on Thursday 26th May 2.30 -4.30 for Scrabble and tea party. Both of these will take place in St Mary’s Church. Why the title? Christian Aid is publicising its support in helping people to rise out of poverty. Nicaraguan coffee growers are one such group. We hope to have their coffee for you to try at the coffee morning. Do support us this May. Glenda Druce, Judith Kelly

Jerry’s Diary

& '' * &( ,$)(

Summer migrants arrived a few days earlier, Chiffchaffs were singing from 11th March at Layham, River Walk and the Fuzz. Willow Warbler and Blackcap singing behind the Health Centre on the 28th March. Again, my first Swallow and Sandmartin were on the 5th April at the Pits, Layham. Nightingale and Cuckoo at Broom Hill Conch on the 11th April. The Cuckoo I saw before it called. Housemartin over Bridge St on the 7th April. Not seeing any Wheatears last year, finding at least 8 Wheatears feeding on the grassy area at Hill Farm on the 12th April made up for this. My first singing Whitethroat was on 15th April, near Layham Pits. Waxings - I found 17+ sitting on the telegraph wires opposite the cricket pitch on a warm 3rd of April morning. Well, 14+ more Waxwings I found at Shelley, near the church, perched on top of a very tall poplar tree on the 14th April. The Waxwing invasion during 1996, Waxwings were still around in May. Several were in Woodbridge on 5th May 1996. A report of a Common Swift on the early date of 8th April, seen by John Clark. Marsh Harrier, 2 Red Kites and 3 Common Cranes seen in Elmsett by Matt Garnham in early April. On Sunday 17th April, a bike ride down to Giffords Flood saw my first Yellow Wagtail and a Little Ringed Plover of the spring. 1/2 hour later 3 Greenshank flew in on to the Scrape. Also here - 7 Little Egret, 10 Redshank, several Lapwing, 2 Oystercatcher, Mallard 2 Teal, 24 Shelduck, 6 Gadwall, Greylag, Canada and Barnacle Goose, Coot, Moorhen, Reed Bunting, Several Stock Dove, Little Owl calling and Buzzard calling. As I was about to go, 8 knot flying off Eastwards, these birds were well hid up on the ground because I did not pick them out on the flood area. Just shows what you can miss. If you see anything interesting, let me know jerry@keithavis.co.uk Jerry Oxford

A BRANCH OF CO-OPERATIVE FUNERAL SERVICES

care, reassurance

Hello Readers, It is that time of year again when we all look forward to the Hadleigh Show. At the Police Station we have been planning and preparing for this yearly event for some time. It is often a surprise to some people when we talk when you need it most about how much time is invested in making sure the event runs smoothly. For us, it is the biggest operation that we look to manage throughout the 61 George Street, Hadleigh year, and have to ensure we cover every contingency, especially traffic Tel: 01473 823117 concerns. Branches throughout Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex Traditionally this event does not generate crime or disorder on the www.eastofengland.coop Saturday, and we have to largely thank the very skilled and organised team of staff that put this show together year in year out. We do remind you all, however, to remain courteous when on the roads during this time as there will always be congestion around Holbecks Park, Duke Street, and the High Street. Provided that we all remain calm and patient, the roads should flow fairly well. In anticipation of this event, we also have to give consideration to the policing of the fairground that will be in operation on the Friday evening. I am sure many of you will know that historically we see a rise in youth nuisance and alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour on this evening. We P. J. B. WILSON BDS, LDS, RCS have looked carefully at the dedicated resource for this occasion, and will be having extra officers on the street in addition to the response teams G. SINGH BDS (HONS) that regularly patrol our area. I will be working with officers from & ASSOCIATES neighbouring teams to ensure that we deal with any problems in a firm but fair manner, and will be utilising volunteers under the Town Pastors www.hadleighdental.co.uk scheme and the Community Youth bus scheme to engage with those of you who are out. I will take this opportunity to inform you all that we do have specific powers to deal with youths and alcohol, as well as drink fuelled problems. Section 30 of the Policing and Crime Act 2009 creates an offence of persistently possessing alcohol in a public place for young people. People under the age of 18 can be prosecuted for this offence if they are caught with alcohol in a public place 3 or more times within a 12 month period. We have been successfully using this legislation for several months now, and are actively involving the parents of those teenagers caught in an attempt to reduce the flow of alcohol. That’s right, the most thorough cleaning ever. My carpet, upholstery & curtain cleaning is the best and 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 gives officers a power Section most thorough you could ever have – if you don’t agree I won’t accept your payment. to direct anyone over 10 years old to leave a public location for up to 48 hours if they present a risk of causing alcohol related crime or disorder. Hadleigh Supports Cherish Uganda “Cherishing children with HIV/AIDS. Embracing with them a future of promise” WHO ARE CHERISH UGANDA Around 110,000 orphaned children are living with HIV in Uganda. The social instability of these children dictates that many will be denied access to the life preserving HIV/AIDS drug therapy which is readily available in Uganda. In 2005 a diverse group of 30 people decided to DO SOMETHING to address the needs of: - access to immune boosting drug therapy - nutritious meals - a stable environment - committed parental care - careful observation of opportunistic infections Cherish is one of the only child care organizations that work with children who are HIV positive, despite the hundreds working in Uganda. Cherish aims to care for the children, embrace the future with them and change the community they will grow up in. Cherish bought 20 acres of land on the shores of Lake Victoria - adjacent to a local village. Within this land Cherish builds a simple home to the cost of £13,000 which will house 8 orphaned children and a mother. Giving each child a home, food, medication and most importantly LOVE.. All of this has its financial costs and requires support from many to make this wonderful village grow. At the beginning of April a team went out to Uganda to carry on and support the work already being done. To support the team and help progress the ongoing projects, funds needed to be raised. I would therefore like to thank many of you in Hadleigh who attended some of our events and cake sales. I would also like to say a BIG thankyou to Hadleigh Buildbase for their donation of hand tools which were much needed and very much appreciated. Thankyou all once again, Anne Hunt & Sarah Gooch

We have had such a busy year and, as with everyone, time just seems to fly past. This is a brief note to introduce myself and to let everyone know that our ANNUAL MEETING is on Monday 9 May. We are a very friendly bunch and are looking forward to recruiting some new members onto the committee. We are a voluntary organisation and generally we only have two official meetings per year. We organise work parties when there are jobs to be done on the field and the whole family can get involved – the work is not too hard and even if you can only spare an hour every little helps (it also a good chance for a natter!). The Marquis of Cornwallis There is great disappointment in the village that ‘The Marquis’ appears to have been abandoned and is deteriorating fast. The building and its surrounds are beginning to look in a bad way and one can’t help feeling that we may have seen the last of the building as a public house. Just in case the building is put to some other use and before the sign fades completely, it might be interesting to record something of the man after whom the public house was named. Charles, Lord Cornwallis was a Suffolk man. His story, together with that of his brother Admiral Sir William Cornwallis have been told in detail in a recently published book ‘Two Brothers Cornwallis’ by Raymond Curry, published by Natula Publications (www.natula.co.uk). The Cornwallis family moved to Suffolk from the West country via London over generations putting down roots in Brome, near Eye in the 14th Century and later at Culford Hall. They were a successful and influential family members of which were over time, for example, Sheriff of London, Colonel of the 33rd Regiment of Foot (forerunner of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment), MP for Eye, founder of the City of Halifax in Nova Scotia and an Archbishop of Canterbury. ‘Our’ Cornwallis was Charles, born in1738. He went to Turin Military Academy in 1759 and entered into a military career. Promotion came fast and by the time he was sent to America in 1776 he was a Major General. He was part of the army attempting to suppress the Revolution and by 1780 was responsible for whole British campaign in the South – taking part in many different battles. His army was outnumbered and defeated by the joint American and French armies at Yorktown – a loss which led to the end of the Revolutionary War. Despite this loss he remained highly regarded and went on to become Governor General of India, where he worked for seven years to improve the way that part of the British Empire was run. His work there was rewarded with the title of 1st Marquis of Cornwallis. In the last decade of the 1790s he was called to serve in Ireland and was made Lord Lieutenant in charge of all military service. He worked hard to persuade everyone of the benefits of full union between Britain and Ireland but was ignored by the politicians. The government asked him to return to India in 1805 but he died later that year and was interred in a mausoleum in Ghazipur built by public subscription. Such was his reputation in Britain that a monument was erected in St Paul’s Cathedral by the unanimous wish of Parliament. The Layham Archive Layham has a modest archive of photographs and other papers. We need someone who lives in the village and who is interested in local history to look after this material and, if they have time and interest, to add to it. Charles Stow – Haulage Contractor Upper Street Layham 1947 Layham Local History Recorder Layham also needs a volunteer Local History Recorder. This could be the same person as the archivist described above or a different person. This role would be suited to someone who likes to walk about the village and

who also uses a camera. The purpose of a recorder is to record events and alterations that take place so that future generations will have a record of changes over the years. It may surprise you to know that no photograph exists of the orchard that stood where Brett Green is now – nor is there any record of the building of the 79 houses that make up Brett Green. Huge changes can take place and no record is made. If you are interested in either of these activities please contact Michael Woods on 01473 823798. The Village Spring Clean The annual village spring clean, organised by Layham Green Team, took place on Saturday 2nd April. Thanks go to the following volunteers: Brian Smith, Molly Keeble, Becky Keeble, Tony Keeble, Ben Newman, Terri Newman, Ron Gunn, Charlie Panting, Jane Elliott, Nick Elliott, David Pratt, Mike Woods, Richard Cromwell, Louise Keeble, Liz Reid, Lesley Garnett, Peter Garnett This year 12 bags of litter were collected. As usual, the worst accumulations were along the main road into Hadleigh, mainly drinks containers and fast food packaging. The most unusual item found was a padded arm protector used for training police dogs! All in all, the amount collected was down on last year when we collected 20 or so bags. We did note however that we were a little later with the Spring Clean and many of the roadside verges had grown up, making it more difficult to spot litter. Two incidences of fly tipping were recorded in Brett Green – some old bedding on the top hedge line and general rubbish including black bags and a car tyre alongside one of the garage blocks. In addition to litter picking, most of the street signs, traffic signs and the bus shelter were given a spring clean.

Hadleigh Town Council would Looking Glass 135x95.indd take this opportunity to state that the base figure on which the Precept is worked out was 2.5 less properties for 2011/12 which led to an amount of approximately £260 being shared amongst the total amount of properties. Fake Antivirus Malware There are many fake antivirus scams which trick the unwary user into parting with money by pretending that their computer is infected with malware. Software with names like Win 7 Antispyware 2010, Spyware Cleaner Pro or VirusGuardPlus try very hard to make you believe that your computer is infected. The aim of the game is to part you with your money and gather credit card details and for good measure probably infect your computer with some real malware. There is a simple cure, once infected, and that is to reinstall the computers operating system and all of the software and data. However that is hardly ever necessary and can often lead to lost data and much pain and you may be left with a significant amount of work to do. There are a few occasions where there is no alternative but to reinstall although thankfully they are few and far between. The story of a local company illustrates my point. Their computer became infected and they were advised that, because their IT person could not remove the malware, reinstalling everything was the cure. However, this resulted in the loss of several months worth of accounts and there was no way to get them back. So what should you do? Turn the computer off or at least disconnect it from the Internet. Give me a call. If I can’t fix it without reinstallation you are no worse off than before but I have an exceptional record in recovering data. Who Killed The Vicar?

Closure Of Daisy Chain

The murder mystery night was our first attemp at this form of entertainment. The success of the evening was much due to good audience participation. Tickets for this one night show sold out well ahead. We thank our audience for their generosity and support. We are now able to forward £500 to the Village Hall Funds - helped in part by contributions made by ‘Player’ members. In case you missed it - the grisly deed was done by the PCC Chairwoman who was in league with the curate. A night of one-act plays is now planned for November. Diane Armour

With dismay have we learnt that Daisy Chain on the High Street is to close after such a successful two years. Joan Rampling who has had experience running other local charity shops has managed Daisy Chain as a top rate Dress agency and supplied it also with lovely costume jewellry and beautiful bags from London. It has always been a delight to go in wondering what one might find and always being tempted by something. Joan sadly cites health reasons for her decision not to continue but she has made a real impact with this innovative idea. Daisy Chain has been run on a non-profitmaking basis with part of the revenue from sales going to the ladies who bring in their garments and the remainder going to designated local charities. This has been made possible through Joan's hard work and through the contribution made by her team of 14 volunteer assistants who have given their time and enthusiasm and brought their own flair to the shop; they all say how they enjoy the interaction with their clients and being involved with a local cause. Wendy Simmons who works 2 days a week tells how working in Daisy Chain has given her back her confidence and got her back into the way of things after a long illness. So, those who come to buy and those who come to sell, as well as those who have generously given their time in the shop are all linked like daisys in a chain in a virtuous circle of giving as well as receiving. That's a great result. Anthea

Parish Thanksgiving Evensong A Thanksgiving Evensong was held in St Mary’s Church on Sunday the 27th March 2011 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Masonic Lodge of Virtue & Silence in Hadleigh. The lodge has been in existence in Hadleigh since the reign of George the IV and the start of the industrial revolution! The service, which was attended by the Mayor, Parishioners and members of the Masonic order, was conducted by the Very Reverend Martin Thrower, Dean of Hadleigh & Bocking, the Reverend Canon Kevan McCormack, Rector of St Mary’s church Woodbridge and George Pipe the Masonic Provincial Grand Chaplain. At the end of the service the congregation retired to the rear of the church to enjoy a fine spread of homemade cakes and delicacies. A donation of £500 was made by the lodge to the Hadleigh Parish Church to celebrate this historic year. This brings the total sum donated by the lodge to National & Local charities to £15,000 in this bicentenary year.

O2 Dream – Just One Step Away Local Singer/Songwriter Nic Keeble is just one step away from making his dream of playing at the O2 a reality when last week he took the judging panel of the UK’s biggest original music competition by storm and qualified for the Area Finals of Live and Unsigned. He will now be competing against the most talented bands and artists in the country in the London and East Final on Sunday 15th May 2011. Nic battled against the best talent in the region to secure a coveted spot in the Area Finals and now has the opportunity to prove that he is the hottest unsigned act in the UK. Acts taking part in the live Area Final Showcase in front of thousands of spectators also get to perform to a professional judging panel, including judges from Kerrang, NME Radio and Radio One. Nic is busy preparing for the final in between all his other music commitments. He juggles studying Music Performance at Suffolk New College with the three bands he is in, not to mention his solo work. Nic has been with Hadleigh based band Steel Pictures for several years and together they have a full line up of gigs over the summer. He also plays bass with Hazy Mazey and these can be seen regularly at Break on The Border on the 3rd Thursday of each month at The Anchor in Stratford St Mary. His more recent venture is his college band Reliant Robbers who recently jointly won a Battle of Bands Competition and will be opening the Music Festival in Alexander Park in Ipswich on May 1st. All the acts in the competition are battling it out for the chance to play the Live and Unsigned Festival at the 02 in London! The overall winner of the competition will be offered a recording and management contract with Future Music with an investment of up to £50,000. The winners will be awarded the title of the UK’s best unsigned act in front of a capacity crowd on the main stage of the festival. A&R and celebrity judges involved in last year’s final included former Slade front man Noddy Holder, R’n’B star Shola Ama, Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale and Ras Kwame. Holon The name ‘holon’ and the image of Da Vinci’s ‘Vitruvian Man’ are both potent symbols illustrating the principles of an integrated approach to health care. The word holon comes from the Greek (ὅλον), and means something that is simultaneously a whole and a part of a greater whole. Vitruvian Man figuratively represents ‘holon’. The dimensions of the square and circle are the product of the dimensions of the human body they contain. Thus we see that we are both co-creators of our environment and are in turn shaped by it. What has all this to do with health care? The unseen and unchallenged aspects of our daily environments, the pervasive and pernicious factors are most commonly the source of problems, but focus tends to fall on the proverbial ‘last straw’. Often very profound changes to health can be made with relatively minor adjustments, including environmental ones; after all your body is designed to restore, repair and renew. Alexander Dent graduated with a degree from the British School of Osteopathy. He has practised extensively in the UK and the USA. He has received post graduate training in acupuncture, cymatherapy, BioEnergetic Assessment and EEG Neurofeedback. He currently lives and practices in Hadleigh, and as part of an integrated dental practice in Takeley (Essex). Contact: Alexander Dent B.Sc. News from St Mary’s Primary School It’s been a very busy month at St Mary’s! ‘Crafty Cooks’ cookery club, run by Janine Edgar every Friday, has proved to be really popular! The children have produced some wonderful food and can’t wait to taste what they’ve made when all the cooking is finished. The club will continue next term. Janine runs several courses and attends various events. If you’re interested in booking, look at the website: www.craftycooks.co.uk/suffolk.html. Another popular club is our environment club. This month, the children were visited by Martha from the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, who is advising us on how we can improve our outdoor spaces to make them better for learning and more wildlife friendly. Well done to all the Year 5 children who have completed the ‘Bikeability’ course. They were really safe and sensible when cycling on the roads near the school. On the final day, the children cycled to the railway walk for a picnic, which was a fitting end to the course! Thanks to all the adult helpers, particularly Mrs White, who delivered the course. It was lovely to see so many parents enjoying the school dinners for our taster lunch for new Reception children and at our Mothers’ Day lunch. Well done to the cooks for producing so many extra meals! The atmosphere in the hall was great and the children enjoyed hosting their parents for lunch. As usual, we welcomed a number of visitors to our Worship. We were very interested to hear about Greg Frost’s journey to Jerusalem. He showed some amazing photographs of important locations, such as the Garden of Gethsemane and the Sea of Galilee, which made the Bible stories really come to life for the children. Also, we were very pleased to welcome Colonel Moss, the Commander of Wattisham Station, and Sergeant Major Ross. They talked to the children about the important work of the Afghan Appeal, building schools alongside the local people in Afghanistan. Colonel Moss also spoke about the interesting cultural differences and brought some traditional Afghan clothing for the children to try on. The children have enjoyed some excellent trips out recently, including the Beech class visit to St Mary’s Church, the Year 6 trip to ‘Crucial Crew’ and the Rowan class outing to Aldham Hall Farm. We are developing a new link with the farm and look forward to many more exciting trips. The children participated in lots of activities, including building nests and searching for mini-beasts. Thanks to Juliet and William for hosting us so well! At the end of term, the whole school went down to St Mary’s Church for our annual Easter Service. Well done to all the children for lovely singing, especially those who played the recorder, read prayers or did readings for us. Thanks to parents for your support and to Martin for hosting us and his talk about symbols. It’s been a really busy term and the children have certainly earned a holiday! We wish everyone all the best for Easter.

Leadership Training at Hadleigh High We are committed to developing pupils' leadership skills at Hadleigh. These skills encourage children to develop confidence by taking on responsibility. We had over 80 applicants who wished to rise to the challenge we provided. All applicants were formally interviewed by staff and then participated in structured training to prepare them for the demands of the new roles at our school. Our training sessions, led by Hadleigh staff and pupils, took place at Suffolk One - the sixth form centre. Pupils enjoyed being away from the school site for this experience as they found the facilities very attractive and enjoyed the opportunity of seeing the college. The workshops, designed by our staff and current Year 11 pupils, were created to develop the skills required to be an effective leader. The morning was divided into 4 sessions: Mr Brigden led the session on team building which involved bamboo canes 'made of helium' which were difficult to control. Paul Midgley (10A) said, "I thought it was a good team building day and it helped me to understand what it takes to be a good prefect." Mrs Shingleton's workshop examined the qualities required to make a good prefect. Molly Green (one of our Year 11 School Captains) and Matt D"Souza (a member of the Year 11 Leadership Team) then told the groups about their roles of responsibility. Miss Woodmass' role play workshop focussed on managing people. Connor Clements (10E) said "I learnt about psychology and what people’s body language means." Miss Beverley's workshop was gathering information and ideas from the

prospective prefects on various ways we could further improve enrichment learning opportunities for our pupil community. Megan Baldry (10E) said "It helped us with our planning skills and actually made us think about what we could actually do as prefects." Overall, our first formal training session for prefects has been very well received and we are looking forward to our new school leaders taking up their posts when the current Year 11 leave. We know that they will be a real asset in taking our school further forward! Ofsted Inspection On Thursday 31st March and Friday 1st April the school was visited by Mr John Williams, Ofsted Inspector. Mr Williams is part of an Ofsted team which are compiling a national report regarding the use of ICT to support learning in schools. Hadleigh High was one of the schools which were selected to be inspected as part of this report. Therefore, we participated in a Subject Inspection for ICT. Mr Williams’s interviewed a number of pupils from all of the different school years, discussed ICT with the staff and pupils and undertook a number of lesson observations in the ICT department as well as History and Science where ICT was being used to support learning. He will be compiling his results shortly and as soon as we have the results we will share them with you. Pupils are not the only ones to learn at Hadleigh High School! We were very pleased to host a training day for Science Technicians from across the county to support practical work for the most able pupils doing GCSE Science. The day was divided into three sections and we saw many new and innovative ideas for use in practical science lessons. In Biology, we learnt how to dissect hearts in two different ways. In Chemistry we made biodiesel so pupils could compare this to fossil fuel and in Physics microwaves were demonstrated by placing a bulb inside an oven and seeing it light up - DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME as there is a secret ingredient! Hadleigh continues to host and develop courses for technicians to keep abreast of all the latest curriculum changes. Year 8 Film Competition We would like to send out our warmest congratulations to all of our Year 8 pupils who entered the Suffolk Stop Smoking Oscars Project. We were absolutely delighted to hear that our entries have been shortlisted for the following awards. ‘Smoking kills- lets beat it’ has been nominated for; effects of tobacco on heath- best film in category and best use of music ‘Dave’s Story’ has been nominated for; effects of tobacco on health- best film in category and best directed ‘Do you think smoking is great?’ has been nominated for peer pressurebest film in category ‘Bullied into smoking’ has been nominated for; peer pressure – best film in category and best use of music Louis Curtis as ‘Louis’ in ‘Do you think smoking is great?’ has been nominated for best actor along with Sam Bevan as ‘Dave’ in ‘Dave’s Story’ We wish all the competitors the best of luck and look forward to hearing the results. He took part in the under-17 boys’ race, taking the lead from the start and finishing with the win, adding another title to his name, as well as the Southern champion. He has high hopes for the future and is looking to step up to the under-20 race at the Inter-Counties in order to have a chance to make a World Cross team as a junior. Student Success India Carey entered a national modelling competition which was run in conjunction with ‘EM’ magazine has earned herself a place in the final at Wickstead Park on 18th June 2011. We wish her the best of luck.

Drey Wright has been provisionally offered a scholarship at Colchester United Football Club. This would mean Drey commencing a two year apprenticeship in sporting excellence at the club following his examination results in the summer. We wish him the best of luck. Swimming Gala On the 29th of March the junior sports went down to Hadleigh pool to help with the Year 5 and 6 swimming gala. Whatfield, St Mary’s, Hadleigh CP, Kersey, Hintlesham, Beaumont, Bildeston and Elmsett were the 8 primary schools that took part. The Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in numerous races in the categories of front crawl, back stroke and there was a final relay. The participants gained points for their school with Elmsett taking first place. We want to congratulate the winning team and all of the swimmers who took part and swam fantastically. Also we want to thank Lorna McGhee, Bethany Colley, Simon Partridge, Jack Benee, James Collis, Mallory Dixon, Leah Claireaux, Charlie Hanley and Jess Sexton for their help with running the gala.

marathon and lots of customers sponsored her, we held a Christmas Sale, two customers donated profits from hand made jewellery sales and we held indoor Car Boot sales. However the amount we needed was quite large, Optua the Suffolk disability charity, successfully applied on our behalf to the Local Strategic Partnership and for the final amount, Councillor Grutchfield kindly helped us with a donation from his Locality Budget. We will be holding a simple ceremony at 10am on 12 May, to recognise the effort of the fundraisers and invite some of the people on our Hospital and GP referral scheme who will be amongst the beneficiaries of this effort. Finally, if you are a user of the Leisure Centre, used to use it or don’t know much about the Centre then please go on our website, there is a link to a survey there for anyone to take part in; it is being organised by Suffolk County Council, our website is www.hadleighleisurecentre.co.uk, please give your views, it could help us to provide more of what people want or improve what we currently offer. We like to think we are at the heart of Hadleigh but need to know what others think. Chris Marsh (Mrs) LC Manager

Sports Conference On Wednesday the 30th March, Georgia Howard, Tommy Newbigging, Lorna McGhee and Mallory Dixon, the Hadleigh High Sport Ambassadors, went to the David Lloyd Centre to attend a sport conference. The Hadleigh high pupils attended the conference in order to prepare for a mini Olympics involving primary schools from all over Suffolk. It was a great day and the ambassadors have learnt a lot and are looking forward to the event with primary schools all over Suffolk later this year. Well Done to Year 11 Our Year 11 pupils have recently participated in revision seminars. The presenters have written to the school and have let us know that ‘Both groups of pupils were outstanding and a real pleasure to work with. They were enthusiastic and courteous – great ambassadors for the school.’ This bodes well for the next steps in their lives. Outdoor Classroom and Conservation Area Update Since the weather has started to improve, this is the perfect time to start to work on our conservation area. This week the volunteer students, Sam Cairns, Ben Chalmers and Sam Page, helped to clear a patch of grass within the conservation area so that a more diverse range of plants can be grown. The boys are looking forward to sowing a variety of wild flower seeds on the patch in the near future. We would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Baker who organised and ran the gardening session with the boys. We look forward to seeing what other work we can complete to enhance our conservation area further. And Finally... We wish good luck to the year 11s in their exams, we will all be very sad to see them go, but we wish them the best of luck in the future in their new journeys.

Do it 4 Steven and Leisure Centre fundraising We would like to invite you to a couple of events in memory of Steven Henly who attended Hadleigh High School and worked at Hadleigh Leisure Centre. Whilst he was at University, he found that he had Cancer and unfortunately did not recover. His family are raising money towards an annual prize in his memory at his University. Steven really loved sport and physical activity and had a real sense of humour. On Tuesday 10th May we will be assembling at the Leisure Centre to do the 2nd “Steven’s walk” at 12 noon, all walkers are welcome to join us on a walk from the Leisure Centre, along the old railway and back again which is a total of 5 miles. Harmony: Agreement, concord, melodious sound is the definition according to the dictionary. Do we all live our lives in complete harmony? Are we in harmony with Nature and our environment? The answer to these questions is NO. The pace of life is so fast and as humans we are trying to cram so much into a day we do not take that few minutes for quiet reflection. We all need to stand still and let the world go by before we jump on the fast train of life again. The constant hurrying, trying to do six things at once, catching up on those neglected tasks all take a toll on people. Before you know it you begin to feel stressed and unable to cope. We, the healers can help by talking and helping you to relax. Take the opportunity by allowing others to help you cope with your busy life. If you feel you need that help please telephone: 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log on to www.hadleighhealingsociety.org for an appointment. The Annual General Meeting of Hadleigh Healing Society will be held on Sunday, 15th May, 7pm at The Guildhall, Hadleigh. After the business has been completed there will be a demonstration of clairvoyance by Jean Curtis, Jon and Pauline Sawyer, three well known mediums. Please come along - all welcome. Entrance £4 including a raffle ticket.

The Great Boxford Run offers an ideal local challenge A Suffolk men’s football club are relaunching a long defunct village ‘fun run’ – but have upped the ante with a challenging 10k course. The Great Boxford Run, taking place on Saturday 7th May, offers local people the opportunity to run either 1k, 5k or 10k – and raise funds for the charity of their choice. Whilst the registration fee goes to improvements to Boxford Pavilion. The run, starting at Boxford Playing Fields, stretches across the beautiful Suffolk countryside and whilst the 1k and 5k is open to anyone – the 10k (officially measured by UK Athletics) is for those aged 15-years-old and over. Boxford Rovers FC, who are co-ordinating the event, have been promoted for the past five seasons and look set for another promotion. However, in doing so, they now need better facilities at their Homefields ground. The team, now sitting top of the Colchester and East Essex Division One, are looking to raise around £2k. Race Organiser, Dan Swanborough, said: “The Great Boxford Run gives people the opportunity to run for the charity of their choice and help raise vital funds for Boxford Pavilion. Runners, joggers and walkers are invited to be sponsored for any charity – and enjoy a great day out in the Suffolk countryside. “Boxford Rovers FC would really like to see this event return as an annual event for the area. The last Boxford Run was around six years ago – but this time we’ve tried to involve the whole community. I would also really urge local runners to come and try out our 10k course - we feel it will be a good challenge for runners young or old.” As well as the Great Boxford Run, there will be a BBQ raising funds for Boxford Primary School, a refreshment stall for the Playgroup and a bar organised by the football club. The event starts at 9.30am with the final run at 1pm. Registration fees are £2 for the 1k (on the day only, no pre-registration); £5 for the 5k and £7 for the full 10k event. For more information – or to sign up for the 10k run – please visit www.boxfordrovers.com and click Great Boxford Run. Registration fees can be paid online via Run Britain or on the day.

The Hadleigh Optimists Blind Group Have you seen this vehicle in Hadleigh? It will have been delivering equipment to VIP’s (Visually Impaired Persons) in the Hadleigh area. (The telephone no. has now been changed to 01284 748800) It belongs to the West Suffolk Voluntary Association for the Blind, based in Bury St. Edmunds, which supports registered VIP’s throughout the area with benefits advice, community support officers, a befriending service as well as equipment to help with everyday living such as computers, talking watches to coloured buttons depicting oven temperature controls. There is also a social side to its activities and this is done locally by Hadleigh Optimists’ Group which is a self financing group meeting on a monthly basis at Sydney Brown Court for coffee and a chat in the winter, but a full programme of events and outings during the summer months. The committee is led by Mary Cross who would welcome new VIP members, people seeking further information or to join its valuable band of volunteers. She can be contacted on 01473 828238. Unfortunately operating a full support programme for the visually impaired costs money - something that the WSVAB now needs rather urgently - having become like so many charitable organisations, a victim of the current economic climate. Hadleigh Optimists will, on 14th May, hold a Morning Market at the Ansell Centre, with all proceeds being given to the WSVAB. The Centre is located behind The Ram Public House in Market Place and, from 10am until 12 noon, will feature a variety of stalls selling homemade cakes, books, plants, bric-a-brac, refreshments and a raffle. Please give your support for this valuable cause and help to ensure that all visually impaired persons within our region will continue to get the support that they desperately need. We look forward to welcoming you - do make a note now in your dairy!

Annual Charity Quiz Event aims to break last year’s total Karen Finch from local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, will again be trading her audiology role for one of a Quiz Master, to help raise money for charity. Together with the help of local entrepreneur and fundraiser Steve Florey from Hudson Signs, the two will be raising much-needed funds for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. The quiz night will take place on Sunday 8th May 2011 (7.00pm) at Greshams Sports Club, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich and your support is needed to make it a fantastic night. Karen Finch MD of The Hearing Care Centre, based on High Street, Ipswich said “Bring your family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, the man/woman who claims to know everything(!) for a night of camaraderie, fun and spirited rivalry. It will be a great night out!” Last year’s event raised over £1,400 for the charity, which far superseeded the original aim of £1,000. However this year the team based at High Street, Ipswich, are looking to raise even more. Teams for the quiz can include between 4 - 6 members. Entry is £3.00pp (nibbles included), and the winners will take home a top prize of £200 worth of High Street shopping vouchers. Hearing dogs change lives. They alert their deaf owners to sounds we take for granted, providing greater independence, confidence and security. Most are selected from rescue centres or donated as unwanted pets. It costs over £5,000 to train and keep one hearing dog for its working life. The Hearing Care Centre are also looking for local companies to donate prizes for their bumper prize draw and raffle, in return for exposure, prior to, and at the event. To purchase tickets call Matthew at The Hearing Care Centre on 01473 230330 or buy online at www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/quiz.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club What a fantastic story the club enjoyed on 11th April when Jaimie Blake, Head Gardener at Bressingham Gardens, showed marvellous slides and told the history of Alan Bloom, the founder of the gardens. It is the kind of story that is quite difficult to believe and possibly one wouldn’t have done so if it hadn’t been reinforced by pictures, many from the days of sepia prints and before colour and in those days the camera did not lie! Alan Bloom must have had the stamina and determination of an ox. At one point in his life he semi-emigrated to Canada, found the soil not suitable in the Vancouver area, so moved again, plus family of course, to Ontario, where the only problem was no water, so discovering a neighbour had a natural spring on his land - proceeded to dig a half mile trench, which with the fall, was three feet deep. Then returned the compliment by doing the same again for said neighbour, superhuman (or mad) and of course no JCB’s, diggers or even hired help, just himself! In England he excavated bog oaks from all areas of Fen land to create farm land for the war effort, not single handed but an enormous undertaking as some were up to eighty feet and of course thousands of years old, vast and heavy. These were but a small part of the background to his develping Bressingham Gardens and numerous varieties and colours of herbaceous perennials and despite all that lived to ninety nine - what a man!! If ever you get a chance to hear this talk, please do, it’s an inspiring story of pluck and determination and will almost certainly make you feel tired and a complete wimp!!! Next month the development of another horticultural jewel - Hyde Hall by one of the gardeners. For more information phone Ruth Allen 822323

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts Having had all the Spring bulbs out together, I now have all the different apple trees out together with some of them flowering a fortnight earlier than usual. Happily there seem to be a reasonable number of bees about so the fruit should set well. The ground is drying out rapidly, so getting weeds out is becoming more difficult. I am afraid that it is time to get the hose pipes out for the vegetables, and to hand water a few susceptible plants I looked after the Plant Stall at the Church Spring Fair. We did well, but I was disappointed that there was so little interest in the house/conservatory plants that I had. Admittedly at this time of the year they were not in flower. This left me wondering whether blinds mean that people have no windowsills to accommodate plants, or whether they just do not realise what a beautiful range of plants are available. My favourite pot plant family is Gesneriaceae. This includes a wide range of different plants including the well known African Violets. If you would like to see the range available have a look at Dibley's web site (www.dibleys.com). Included in the range are the Achimenes which die back at the end of the Summer leaving tubercles in the pot to plant the following year. These look almost like small worms. I had some spare tubercles of some good varieties available at the sale, but only sold one packet. I have been reviewing the results of the Winter. I am now almost certain my pittosporum is dead. My hardy fuchsias are shooting from ground level, and my phormium tenax looks terrible, but there is a new shoot so it may survive. Weather Records In March 8.9 mm (0.35") of rain fell at Kersey which is very low. It made the 3 month running figure 111 mm (4.4") which is well below average. In March the maximum temperature was 17 Cel (6 F), and the minimum was -2 Cel (28F). So March was very warm with no really hard frosts. We must remember it is rare to get an air frost in May, but ground frosts do occur in some years. In my garden the ground temperature in mid April is 10 Cel (50 F). Slightly cooler than a month ago, but much more normal for the month. Hints Garden Centres and Nurseries are now bulging with beautiful plants to tempt us. Before you part with your money, think where the plant is going to go in your garden, and whether it would grow there. Would it be the right size ? Would the colour of the flowers or foliage fit its surroundings ? Is your soil suitable for it ? Would it get the amount of sun it needs ? Could it cope with the wind that whistles round that corner ? One needs to accept that there are lots of beautiful plants that you have no hope of growing in your particular garden. As a good general guide the time to prune shrubs is after they have flowered. So have a look at your forsythias, kerrias, flowering currants and spring flowering spirea, and trim off the flowering shoots, so that they can make new shoots for the flowers to come on next year. There are odd exceptions, so one needs to get to know your plants. I have one variety of forsythia that flowers best on the side shoots of one year old growth. This needs 50% of the shoots cut out each year at this time. Some varieties of rose are prone to the disfiguring fungus on the leaves called black spot. I do not go for a lot of spraying, but the way to control this problem is to start early, and spray prone varieties with a fungicide. The same approach applies to hollyhocks which get a fungus called rust which is generally not fatal, but does spoil them. John Rye www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

Dear Sir I feel I must write to defend Mr Gibbons, who I do not know and have never spoken to, from the terrible attack in your March letters. Poor fellow, he's been hit with just about every cliche in the book, ranging from the "politics of envy" right through to the "economics of the madhouse". Does Mr David not realise that we need people to spend their money so that other citizens can make income and prosper and, last but not least, pay taxes. My wife and I, who are pensioners, own four cars but this does not increase our carbon footprint or whatever (we have not yet managed to perfect the art of driving two cars at once); it circulates money in the area and again contributes to taxation. Angus Bancroft

Dear Sir In the march 2011 community news the Hadleigh Town Council (HTC) included an article in which it stated its intention to provide South Suffolk Leisure (SSL) with £30k per annum (index linked) of funding as part of the changes to the Hadleigh swimming pool facilities, and HTC asked for feedback on this proposal. The £30k is currently being set aside each year in order to maintain the existence of swimming facilities in Hadleigh. The argument made by HTC for the change can be summarized as follows: 1) Hadleigh is in need of additional youth and community facilities and provision. The improved facility at Hadleigh pool would provide this so the HTC should make a contribution to the running costs of this facility. 2) That SSL is a successful organisation and it will be able to generate additional funds from the improved site in Hadleigh that will be used to provide additional youth and community services and maintain the swimming facility. Taking these points one by one: 1) It is hard to deny that Hadleigh needs some additional youth provision, but the HTC has not shown that the existing facilities in Hadleigh (the town hall, the Ansell centre, Hadleigh High school leisure centre, the football and rugby clubs, the new Bowling Club, the Porch project) are unable to provide the spaces to host youth and community activities. The HTC proposal is to give the £30k per annum fee to SSL with no conditions attached. Would it not be better to commit to spending the money each year on youth and community provision based in Hadleigh, using whichever facilities offer the best arrangement? 2) The financial statements for SSL for 2010, 2009 and 2008 show that the amount of commercial revenue earned has fallen over that period whereas income from grants and Babergh have risen significantly. Although financial statements do not tell the whole story, on the face of it SSL has not been commercially successful. Instead, it has become increasingly reliant on grants and government funding. Expecting SSL to be able to generate additional funds from the Hadleigh facility is not borne out by its financial performance to date. Since Babergh are truly confident of the future success of SSL they should underwrite the financial risk involved. It would be a wonderful outcome for Hadleigh if the new facilities at the swimming pool site become a success, but to me there seems to be a considerable financial risk involved in this project. As Babergh are the driving force behind it, I believe they should be the ones to take on that risk. If HTC have money available this could be ring-fenced for spending on youth and community activities either at the new facilities or at existing sites ensuring that the people of Hadleigh are getting something for their money, Daniel Quinlan, ACA

Dear Sir I would like to kindly ask all Hadleigh residents, whether they have children or not, to consider saving any vouchers they receive from supermarkets or on particular grocery products, cereal, washing powder etc. that would help buy essential equipment for our schools. There are many schemmes about that help schools to purchase P.E and Computer equipment, also books. In these stretched economic times this help would be very much appreciated by all of our three schools, Hadleigh 42

Community, St. Mary's and Beaumont. Next time you are asked if you'd like them, please say YES! and forward them on to your local school where they will certainly be used. Please also be aware that most vouchers have an expiry date, so don't leave them in the drawer for too long-or we won't be able to use them. Thank you so much for your support. R. Grist

Dear Sir As of 4th April 2011, the last bus back from Ipswich to Hadleigh will be the 18:15. There are NO schelduled buses back from Ipswich after this time as the council are eliminating the 21:10 and the 23:15 service from Ipswich to Hadleigh. The Sunday bus service has also been culled. I noted in your last publication that the Hadleigh Liberal Democrats were advertising "Dial-a-ride" a transport service which runs from 9:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday...do you see the problem here? Although this is an admirable cause, it is a service which runs during the times which have not been cancelled. What about the people who rely on the bus service during the evenings and on Sundays? The original bus routes must be reinstated. It is utterly irresponsible of the Council to devoid the community of these long-established bus routes; the argument that they are not profitable is completely irrelevant as the council has a responsibility to provide reasonable public transport. Who made the decision to cut these bus service? Who has advertised this? I have only seen it advertised on the public transport section of the Suffolk County Council website. The Suffolk County Councils public transport policy, as well as current public policy nationally, is completely stunted. Nicola Evans

Dear Sir I hope everyone has noticed that today (12th April), in the middle of hard times, there is not a single unoccupied shop in or close to Hadleigh High Street. And if Tesco comes? They sell fish, meat, groveries, greengroceries, flowers, tobacco, newspapers, magazines, white goods, toys, games, clothing, financial services, computer spares and who knows what else. How will the High Street look then? Councillors and planners - think about it! John Hart

Dear Sir How fortunate we are in Hadleigh to have a cemetery in such beautiful surroundings. It is situated on a gentle slope overlooking the town and its many and varied fine looking trees stand out and are interesting to look at, and make a great backdrop to the whole scene. Whether you are there tending the graves of loved ones or just there to see the beauty of the place there is a sense of peace and tranquillity. It's undulating terrain adds to the interest, and just to go there on one of the lovely spring days we have had recently and soak up the beauty is an experience not to be missed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the staff who keep the cemetery in such good condition. Many cemeteries are neglected and an eyesore, but ours is kept in an excellent state, as also is the disused burial ground around the parish church in the centre of the town, and that too is in a beautiful area. We live in a lovely environment and though we have our troubles there is so much for which we should be thankful. Colin Bull

Dear Sir Last Month (April) Babergh’s Development (Planning) Committee approved Persimmon’s application to build 174 houses to the east of Lady Lane. One of the questions I raised at the meeting was why there was no provision for retail shops in the development. If the residents need a loaf of bread or other shopping they either have to catch a bus or drive to town. How does this fit in with our “green” aspirations? The answer I received was that the land was zoned for residential and light industrial usage. As such, a retail element of any description was excluded. So there we have it. Even if the Development Committee had wanted to insist on a retail element they could not have done so because of past zoning errors and omissions. The development, without a shop of any kind, may tick all the right boxes but it ignores practicalities and we shall be living with that mistake for years to come. All elections are important – but more than ever we need District Councillors who take in the wider view and who put people before policies and procedures. It’s time to look past party colours and vote for people who can be competent and effective. Brian Riley

Hadleigh Community Primary News Red Nose Day The total amount of money raised for Red Nose Day was close to £75 million this year. At Hadleigh Community Primary School, we certainly ‘did our bit’ to contribute to this magnificent total. The actual money raised by the children’s donations through wearing a superb variety of red clothes to school was £396. The total raised by the sale of cakes and painted noses was £417. This gives a combined total of £813. Once again, this was a superb example of how our school community all work together, from the providing of red clothes and superb cakes by the parents, to the wonderful support of our HSA who ran the after school cake stall for us. Year 4 experience a taste of India During the last week of term, the children in Year 4 had two ‘India’ mornings as part of their topic on Chembakolli. If you happened to see large groups of children in the Co-op, they were finding out about the numerous Fairtrade accredited products for sale, and the country of origin of the Fairtrade ingredients. The members of the public were all very patient with the children, and we would like to thank the Co-op for their support, particularly since they gave us a DVD explaining about Fairtrade products. Another activity Year 4 took part in was to make a curry using ingredients commonly used in Chembakolli, such as okra, aubergine and coriander. Also, they tasted some of the fruits that are grown in that region – papaya, mangoes, pineapples, fair-trade bananas and guava. Thank You to local organisations from Reception One of the many things we love about our school is that it really is a community and the community of Hadleigh plays a vital part in helping us. Recently, the school received ten planting kits from M.W. Partridge & Co (‘Partridges’). These kits will be used by our Reception children and include seeds, trays and tools. We would like to thank them for their generosity. We would also very much like to thank Hadleigh Thrift Shop who have donated an outdoor easel and painting aprons to our Reception classes. Your kindness is much appreciated. Royal Wedding Along with the rest of the country, our HSA have truly embraced the spirit of the Royal event by planning a disco as our own celebration. This will happen on the Thursday before the big event and children will be encouraged to wear tiaras and crowns! There will also be a special Royal Wedding lunch that day, including for pudding: Victoria sponge with royal icing and queen of hearts cookie! All home made of course. Eggstraordinary traditions continue! On the last day of term, the whole school had the opportunity to take part in our ‘Great Egg Race’ competition. This year, the challenge was to make an egg. There was a huge response, and a special exhibition was set up in the main hall so that all children could thoroughly examine the various exhibits. Just before lunch, all children were able to take part in our ‘spring skip’. It was a beautiful day, and all children thoroughly enjoyed the event, ably organised by our P.E. instructor, Mr.Peters.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

ANDREW

We have just finished our first term of 2011, and we have welcome many new children and have also had to say goodbye to some who are now starting nursery for the summer term. For the children who have just left us we would like to wish you all luck. With the new term starting we have also started new session times, which we hope will make things easier for parents and make the day more enjoyable for the children. We will now be finishing the day at 3pm rather than 3:45pm, as before. For further information regarding our new session times please visit our website. During the easter holiday the fun didn’t stop, we had an easter fair which had a tom-bola, raffle, pin the feather on the duck a stall from the gift basket and much more. We managed to raise £200 which we will put towards equipment for the playgroup. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us on the day and also who came to the event. Also we would like to say thank you to the parent of one of our children who was kind enough to use his talent and make us a lovely picnic bench for the children to sit on in the garden. We cant say how much we appreciated the gift. Thank you. If you wish to send your child to our playgroup, then please visit are website for further information or pop into the playgroup for an application form. Remember that children 3 years and older are entitled to 15 hours a week free childcare. www.hadleighcommunityplaygroup.co.uk

Hanging Gardens of Hadleigh We are into year four of the Hanging Gardens of Hadleigh. Last year’s display has been voted the best so far, but we aim to top it in 2011! Thanks to the sponsors, Hadleigh High Street bursts into bloom each summer with 60 hanging displays. Listed below are the contributors who last year pledged nearly £7,000 to finance the scheme. It was set up as a community project under the umbrella of Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce and run by volunteers, notably Guy Ormes and Ron Jenkins. The idea was that traders and residents would contribute to a scheme that benefits everyone....those who live, work and shop in the town. Support from shopkeepers has been amazing but this year it would be good – and fair – if all Hadleigh traders contributed to an initiative which benefits us all; if your customers benefit then so do you! We have listed last year’s sponsors below. If you’re not on the list, please try to join us this year. We need more support from bigger companies in the town and it would also be good to see greater involvement from groups of residents in clubs and organisations, or even groups of neighbours. If you would like to support the scheme please complete the form below and send it with your cheque, at £50 per basket, to Cyndy Hilton, Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, Priory Hall, Benton Street, Hadleigh, IP7 5AZ. Each individual pledge of £50 goes towards planting and maintaining the baskets from June to September. What do you think over a drink? This men’s group meets in the back room of The George pub at 8.00pm on Wednesday 25th May. The subject for discussion will be: Sporting Heroes. With just over a year to go to Olympics 2012, let’s hear who your sporting heroes are. Are they real heroes, or just overpaid entertainers? Was sport better in the old, amateur days? Come along and share your ‘pint’ of view and hear what others have to say. All men welcome.

A Joyful Easter! Easter is about much more than chocolate eggs and fluffy bunnies, though there is nothing wrong with either of those. Chocolate is a delightful gift from God and should be enjoyed. Eggs, chicks and baby rabbits are signs of new life and the promise of the victory of life over death. Jesus’ amazing resurrection from the dead is our promise from God that life in his love will never come to an end. To be loved forever by the creator of the universe, that is the real joy of Easter. why not get in touch?

Hadleigh Bowling Club In the April edition of the HCN the Cricket Club paid its tribute to the late Peter Ryder and we at the Bowling Club would like to record our own tribute to this true sportsman. Peter was a most valued member of the club and as with the Cricket Club, Peter, in addition to being a competitive bowler took on a number of important duties within the club. He served as club captain from 1986 to 1992 followed by a stint as Chairman from 1998 to 2000. In 2004 Peter was elected President, a position he held until his death. A true gentleman who will be greatly missed by his many friends at the Bowling Club. Our thoughts are with his family. On a happier note, on Saturday 7th May the club will be holding our Annual Coffee Morning at the new clubhouse in Stone Street from 10.30a.m. to 12.00 midday, entrance 50p. As well as refreshments there will be the usual array of stalls including Plants, Bric-a- Brac, Tombola and of course a raffle. All are welcome and particularly those who would like to use this event to take a look at our new facility.

Hadleigh Tennis Club Surprise! For some time now Hadleigh Tennis Club has thought that the club was established around 1911, we even have a plaque above our clubhouse door stating the date. So imagine our surprise when recently considering what we might do to celebrate our 100 years and further researching the history of the club we unearthed this newspaper article: HADLEIGH Lawn Tennis - Hadleigh v Bildeston - On Friday the 8th a lawn tennis match was played between the Hadleigh Club and a team from Bildeston, at Hadleigh, when the home team won four sets to two. Mr H Kersey for Hadleigh and Mr Spilling for Bildeston played remarkably well. The following gentlemen took part: Hadleigh Bildeston Mr. Wm, Kersey Rev. T.S. Harris Mr. A Kersey Rev. W. Forbes-Leith Mr. H. Kersey Mr. Spilling Mr. P. Wilson Mr. Waters Mr A. Newman and Mr. C. Hood officiated as umpires. Bury and Norwich Post, Suffolk Herald - Tuesday 19 July 1881 From this historic newspaper article it appears that Hadleigh Tennis Club was playing tennis matches in 1881, 30 years earlier than we thought. The Club is not 100 but at least 130 years old this year. This makes us one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country! A number of clubs claim to be the “oldest” tennis club, amongst them: Wimbledon (1877), Bexley, Kent (1880) and Cambridge University (1881). We are now obviously another in this prestigious mix. It seems a little late to celebrate our centenary, however we feel that 130 years of tennis in Hadleigh does need a celebration of some sort. Therefore, the club intends to celebrate this historical and important event by re-enacting the 1881 tennis match between the gentlemen of Hadleigh and Bildeston. A team of gentlemen from Bildeston have readily accepted the challenge. The event will take place on Sunday 26th June 2011. This is the middle Sunday of the Wimbledon fortnight, (a club that is a mere 3 years older than us)! The event will incorporate a Ladies match as well as the Gentlemen’s Challenge Match. Ladies tennis started later but was well underway by 1890. It is anticipated that part of the men’s match will involve gentlemen playing in appropriate costume of 1881. The event will be further enhanced by holding the club’s annual barbeque as part of the celebration. Whilst we now know that this event took place, we have no information as to where the match was played and where the courts were in 1881, although we do know that at some time tennis was played at the bottom of the Cricket Meadow and on one clay court in Calais Street. We know something of the players too, we believe the Kersey family was prominent in Hadleigh and once lived in the High Street and later at Pond Hall farm. If anyone can tell us any more, we would be pleased to hear from them on Tel: 01473 822919, or email: secretary@hadleightennis.org.uk Equally if any local business or organisation would like to associate itself with this event and help with the celebrations, (perhaps because they were also active in Hadleigh in 1881), then we would be pleased to hear from them. We will tell you more of the event and any more news and surprises that may come to light in next month’s issue. If you want more information on this season’s activities and how to play tennis at one of England’s oldest clubs, please visit our web site: www.hadleightennis.org.uk

Hadleigh Hares Athletic Club Celebrating 25 years of Road Running, Athletics, Cycling and Triathlon LONDON MARATHON 2011 On a beautifully sunny April 17th, 4 Hadleigh Hares joined up with 35,000 other runners to take part in the annual Virgin London Marathon. As always the event was incredibly well supported with thousands of people lining the route to cheer the runners on through the grueling 26.2 mile route. The hares who took part were as follows: Brian Airlie, who recorded a personal best time of 3:33:14, Steve Hunt in a time of 3:56:07, Deborah Stewart also recording a personal best of 4:26:14 and Steve Alcock, who running his first ever marathon finished in 5:02:20. A massive well done to all 4 runners who are, no doubt, feeling the after effects of their brilliant achievements! Debbie and Brian would also like to thank those people who sponsored them along the way, raising money for both Cancer Research and Friends of Thomas Wolsey respectively. Personal Message of thanks from Debs Stewart: First of all, thanks to my support team; running buddies & well-wishers – without you I would not have made it to the finish. It was a great day starting with boarding the Ipswich Jaffa’s coach to London at 6am. It was a smooth journey and within a couple of hours I found myself in the blue start area, bumping into Brian Airlie (a fellow Hare). The event itself was very well organised and all of a sudden I was lined up waiting for the start, chatting to Lisa who had come from New Zealand specifically for the race. As I went round I tried not to think of the distance ahead, but focussed on keeping a steady pace & looking out for my supporters. The crowds were amazing and having my name printed on my shirt helped generate a lot of support which kept me going. The main highlight for me was to cross Tower Bridge. However, the sights & noise all along the route were also amazing. Once I was on the embankment I knew I was going to make it to the end, and I finally made it to the finish line in 4 hours 26 minutes and 14 seconds, a Personal Best by 6 minutes. Although I finished 15344th overall (top 44%), I am extremely pleased with the statistic of finishing 196th (out of 712) in my age category! BORED? NEED TO GET FIT? Fancy a new sporting challenge? Always wanted to run? Returning to exercise after a break or after having had children? Perhaps you’re interested in duathlon or triathlon? Want to meet new like minded people? Then we are the club for you! Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club have been getting the people of Hadeigh and beyond up and running for the past 26 years. Hadleigh United Under 11’s Successful Season 10/11

HUFC U11’s A finished 2nd in South Suffolk Youth Division One, with the B’s coming 4th also in Division One. This is a fantastic achievement with the boys working really hard all season. A big congratulations to them and the management team. We set out our “goals” at the beginning of the season and we achieved them, to come 2nd and 4th is an amazing bonus !! As always we would like to thank our sponsors, Buildbase, Jim Lawrence and The George Hadleigh, without their support it wouldn’t be possible. We now look forward to a new challenge next season as the boys move up to a full size pitch.

The Hadleigh United Under 9's enjoyed their mascot day with the Hadleigh United First Team when they entertained Dereham on 12 February 2011. The boys enjoyed a warm up on the main pitch (thanks to Gav Peters, John Simpson & Russ Francis) prior to walking out with the first team squad. At the half time the Under 9's penalty finalists (Jake Ingram, Kane Leathers, Owen Tampion, Max Cullinane & Jake Phillips) took their three penalties, after some excellent penalties by all of the boys and great saves by goal keeper (Travis Spraggens) the eventual winner was Max Cullinane.

Golf Club nominated for National Award A local golf club has been nominated for a national award for the work it is undertaking in schools. As well as providing coaching to pupils in conventional schools, Newton Green Golf Club’s professional has ventured into new educational territory. Tim Cooper has been coaching special needs youngsters attending Sudbury’s Hillside Special School - with teachers saying golf is providing a positive experience for the students. The initiative has led to nomination of the club and their professional for the Sport and Recreation Alliance (SRA) Sports Club of the Year Awards. The Alliance is the successor of the National Council for Physical Recreation and is an umbrella organisation representing 330 national sporting bodies ranging from the Football Association to the Royal Academy of Dance. This year, for the first time, in collaboration with the Youth Sports Trust, the awards will include honours directly aimed at clubs who are effectively working with schools in their communities. The prize for the winner of the category is £2,500 to assist the club in further improving their schools and development their infrastructure. The award will be given during the annual SRA Sports Clubs of the Year awards dinner in London, along with five other awards aimed at community and professional clubs. The South West Suffolk Schools Partnership – an organisation facing the scaling back of operations under Government cutbacks – has been instrumental in nominating Newton and its professional. The partnership provides funds to enable schools to engage professional coaches – which could be reduced in scale for younger age groups from September. Commenting on the golf club’s nomination, chairman Paddy Lockwood, said: “We are honoured to put up for consideration for such a prestigious award. The work we are performing in schools is part of a wide-ranging programme of support for newcomers to the sport through our recently formed golf development committee.”

Hadleigh United Football Club Hadleigh United had a backlog of fixtures to catch up on in the closing weeks of the season following the postponements of the rough winter. The trip to Ely City saw Hadleigh concede a goal in the opening seconds of an eventful match. We equalised through Ben Deacon in the second half but Ely scored another before leading scorer Deacon levelled again. We completed a win by four goals to two with late goals by Daryl Alexander and Ollie Canfer. A midweek trip to Stanway saw Brett Girling limp off the field with an injury which kept him on the sidelines for several weeks. Josh Mayhew equalised after Stanway had gone ahead and then Ollie Canfer scored in the last minute to give Hadleigh a win by two goals to one. A trip up the A12 to Great Yarmouth saw another great display by Hadleigh which ended in a two goal win. We scored in the first half when Ben Deacon lobbed over the keeper and Hadleigh dominated the match. The second goal arrived late in the game when Daryl Alexander netted from close range. This took our unbeaten run to eight matches. This unbeaten run was ended at Woodbridge where Hadleigh lost by three goals to one. The Woodpeckers scored all their goals in the opening twenty minutes with Hadleigh getting a consolation goal late on with Ben Deacon netting a penalty kick after Dale Munson had been tripped. Yet another away match followed with a pleasant trip along the leafy lanes of Norfolk to Wroxham. We dominated before the interval with Duane Wright scoring from a narrow angle after seven minutes. Wright then hit the crossbar just before half time but it was a different story in the second half as the Yachtsmen scored twice for a narrow win as Hadleigh lost their first half domination. A home match against Walsham saw both sides on target before the interval with Josh Mayhew equalising for Hadleigh. But Walsham scored twice in the second half for a win three goals to one against an off form Hadleigh side. The trip to Clacton brought pleasure to our travelling supporters with a superb display by Hadleigh resulting in a deserved win by four goals to one. Duane Wright opened the scoring before Luke Read headed number two and Josh Mayhew hammered in a third goal. Clacton pulled one back but the scoring was completed in the second half with a spectacular shot by Mayhew. Hadleigh Reserves’ home match against Ipswich Wanderers was marred by skipper Ben Goodchild sustaining a fractured cheek bone. We won the game by six goals to one with Kieran Dilloway scoring twice, with other goals coming from Josh Caraccio, Jamie Cowan, Matt Chinnery and Jack Severy. The Reserve match at Sudbury was lost by four goals to one with Luke Read on target. A better result against Long Melford Reserves at the Millfield saw both sides score twice. Patrick Armstrong and an own goal gave us the advantage but Melford fought back to draw. A fine reserve match at Haverhill ended in a loss by three goals to two with Dale Munson and Matt Chinnery on target. Our Ridgeons Youth team won by seven goals to one at Haverhill with Deasko Garner scoring three and Patrick Armstrong two. Other goals came from Josh Caraccio and Harry Evans. A home match against Coplestonians was lost by three goals to one with Thomas Driscoll scoring for our youngsters. A great four goal win at Brantham saw Patrick Armstrong score a hat trick while Driscoll also netted to keep hopes alive of getting the runners up spot behind champions Clacton. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were S. A. Brown, Kevin Hay and Chris Rose. Terry Adams
