The Tour of Britain Cycle race is nearly here and Hadleigh residents will be able to see the race pass through the town and join in activities in the High Street. Saturday, September 17 is the big day with free events taking place in the High Street near the junction with Angel Street. Kicking off at 10am, Babergh Council's mobile skate park will be there as well as the chance to try Kangoo Jumps and join in a family cycle ride. There will also be the opportunity to have a free bike check and also find out more about what you can do at the town's swimming pool, leisure centre and new community facility. There will be street entertainers and local traders will ensure there is plenty to eat and drink. Just after 10.45am the lead cars will arrive followed by the 16 teams of cyclists on the penultimate stage of the Tour of Britain Race which culminates in London the next day. The teams come from Britain, Ireland, France, USA, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium and their day will have begun in Bury St Edmunds. And after going through Cockfield, Lavenham, Monks Eleigh and Hadleigh the race will go onto Ipswich, through Mid Suffolk and into Norfolk where this stage will finish at Sandringham House. Fancy your own cycle ride? Then why not join in the family ride taking place before the main race, which will finish in good time at Babergh council's car park in Bridge Street so that riders can watch the main race as it passes

If you currently own a family house and expect to move to somewhere “more practical” once the children have grown up, you might need to reconsider your plans. According to recent research the current demographic shift to a low mortality/low fertility society is creating a new generation of future homeowner. As the population is living longer, people are lingering longer in their various life stages before moving on. They are also moving house more often to accommodate lifestyle changes. One of the predictions is that by 2026, almost 80 per cent of the adult population will be ‘adkids’ - an amalgamation of adults and kids, who are quite happy to rely on mum and dad for longer, primarily as a result of higher housing and living costs. This, in turn, leads to an increase in the age at which these ‘Peter Pans’ leave home, get married, and have their first child, with a knock-on effect on future generations. For example, women now have their first child at an average age of 26.7 years, and by 2026, this is predicted to rise to around 29 years. It is predicted that parents will spend less time being ‘empty nesters’ and Helping youexperience more time in the ‘sandwich’ generation, where they with your move, simultaneous demands from both their elderly parents (who are living not just your sale! longer), and the ‘adkids’ who haven’t yet left home. So if you have teenagers and are pushed for space, don’t bank on them moving out in the foreseeable future. And if you are currently buying a property, perhaps you should consider purchasing something bigger than you currently need in order to provide enough space, perish the thought, for your extended family!

You may have wondered what’s happening at the old fire station. All those builders, skips, diggers etc…. something must be going on. Well, I have news for you. Mill Pharmacy is expanding. Thanks to all your support business has been good and we purchased the old fire station (which was lying empty) with a view to providing a wider range of goods and services to our customers. As you know we can dispense prescriptions for patients living in Hadleigh or out in the villages regardless of whether they are registered with the doctors at Hadleigh Health Centre or with another surgery. In addition we offer a free delivery service to those of our customers who find it difficult to come to the pharmacy. We also provide free medicines use reviews for customers who would like more information on the medicines they are prescribed or buy over the counter and we dispense in dossett boxes for those who have difficulty in remembering to take your medicines. Many customers are making use of our smoking cessation service which allows them to obtain nicotine replacement products such as patches and gum on the NHS. Our pharmacists are also accredited to prescribe certain antimalarials for customers travelling abroad. We also have a small (but perfectly formed) shop which sells a variety of medicines and toiletries. Expanding to the fire station will allow us to improve on the services we already offer you. In addition we wish to extend the range of goods we offer in our shop and would like your help in telling us what to keep in stock. So if there is anything you have problems finding in Hadleigh and have to make frequent visits to Ipswich to obtain then let us know – we may be able to stock it. This could be such things as toiletries, medicines for your pets, disability aids, herbal medicines, fragrances, gifts, and anything else you can think of. Just write it down and next time you visit the pharmacy or order your prescription just hand it at the counter or drop it in the letter box. We hope to be moving at the end of November so there is plenty of time to get your suggestions in. Taj West is the Superintendent Pharmacist at Mill Pharmacy located within the Hadleigh Health Centre
Location Location Location One establishment has this in spades and that is The Henny Swan near Sudbury. On a gorgeous sunny day the Fidelis Lunch Bunchers were fortunate enough to enjoy the pub’s prime position by the River Stour. It was the foodies’ second visit to this attractive restaurant but this time it was to check out the ambiance and the cuisine following its long closure. After several false starts it is now independently owned for the first time in 100 years. The new owners and their friendly managers, Lee and Sian, are working hard to create a traditional pub atmosphere serving food with quality ingredients. The diners tried several different dishes and all were satisfied with their choices especially the yummy desserts. Lady lunchers agreed that these smaller special interest groups within the club are an excellent way of getting to know fellow Fidelians better. In September Fidelis will re-locate to The Dining Room where there will be a warm welcome for several new members from their waiting list. Barbara Tryon Sec 824417 Henny Swan 01787 269238 JD

Goodbye Tesco I would like to thank all of my readers, clients and friends who have been so supportive to my mother and I during my father’s illness. We have been quite over whelmed by such kindness. I was absolutely delighted that Tesco has been given its marching orders. No doubt the store will make further applications to develop its site in Hadleigh. We are so fortunate that we have a market town that remains unmolested by these giant supermarkets. I want to see a town that has its variety of independent shops. I stood outside the planning hearing at the Town Hall in Hadleigh and a reporter from Suffolk Radio suggested that we would relish greater choice. As I retorted, we have plenty of choice in Hadleigh. In view of the number of vehicles that pass my office, it appears that many of you have access to cars and thus can easily reach shops in nearby towns. I for one use local businesses and will often be seen perambulating up and down the High Street. I would encourage all of you to use our shops in Hadleigh and to be most vociferous in objecting to any similar Tesco applications in the future. It makes me mad that local councillors are prevented from voting on the Tesco application since their interest is considered to be prejudicial! I know that many of you come to us for your legal services and for which I am ever grateful. I spend a great deal of my day in general discussion with clients at the office and on the telephone. My clients are able to float things past us and obtain meaningful views on proposals. This is “service” and something that is not so readily available when dealing with some call centre or on-line facility. You all know that we have vast experience in conveyancing – an area of law that appears to be conducted generally at such a low level. Property law is full of pot holes for the unwary. We do not pretend to provide a cheap service but a good service for a reasonable fee. So before you are persuaded to use your estate agent’s pet solicitor come and see us. We are independent. We will crusade on your behalf. Some of my readers thought that Frank, my chauffeur, is a figment of my imagination. The lady at the petrol station now knows that he exists – she saw him filling one of my cars. Howard Gibbons

Feathered Hoodies Not a new fashion statement at Fidelis but a reference to one of their more unusual visitors, an attractive Gyr/Saker Falcon hybrid called Akos. Falconer, Andrea Keyland made some startling and often bizarre revelations about falcons, hawks, peregrines and owls with colourful illustrations and two birds to support the facts. It came as a surprise to learn that hunting with falcons can be a three way exercise involving a falcon, hunting dogs and their owners. It’s a win, win situation too. The dogs are happy, the falcon swaps his edible catch for a tastier reward and the hunter bags his tea. In the Middle East falcons are revered to the point of travelling 1st class on certain airlines and not in the hold either. Rumour has it that one rich potentate even designated one of his aircraft to transport his feathered lovelies. English language and traditions have been enriched with vocabulary and customs which have their roots in falconry. As ‘hoodwinking’ a falcon makes him think it is night when it isn’t, it’s easy to see how this has been incorporated into our vernacular. There are many others. History is also full of references and evidence of the birds with the exception of the early Egyptians. Surprisingly, there are no hieroglyphics for the creature. The talk ended with the ladies meeting a young and very relaxed Sparrow Hawk. Although this attractive bird has a hidden tendency for hyperactive behaviour, the audience were spared any neurotic outbursts. Andrea then fielded many questions before closing this fascinating and interesting encounter with a proud species of birds. Jan Devey. Fidelis B. No Distraction – This Duo Will Grab Your Attention Georgette And The Distraction are an acoustic duo reigning from Nedging and Hadleigh. They take covers varying from Bruno Mars and Adele to U2 and Foo Fighters and strip them down to two vocals and one acoustic guitar. They have been friends for years and first played together at the Bildeston King's Head Beer Festival in late May 2011 and after intensely good feedback from the audience, they decided to make it their new venture and Georgette and The Distraction was born. Ever since then they have rapidly taken off and gone from strength to strength and have been asked to perform at pubs, restaurants, music/beer festivals, private parties and even weddings. Georgette Fawley (16) and Nic Keeble (17) are both studying music performance at Suffolk New College and are looking forward to a future career in music. They love what they do and this shines through during their performances and is one of the reasons they are repeatedly being asked back to the venues they play at. They are available for any event including Christmas Parties and can be contacted on Nic 07775 937050 or Georgette on 07825 543161.
Hadleigh Evening WI Hadleigh Evening WI members were delighted to welcome Dick Beechener Jimmy Wilding to their garden party held in Ann Porter’s garden. They completed a cycle ride from John o’Groats to Lands End a distance of 941 miles over 13 days to raise money for cancer research. The weather had been unpleasant at times and the terrain challenging particularly through the highlands of Scotland and the hills in Cornwall at the end of their left to right Andrew Chilton, journey. Jimmy Wilding with cheque from They praised their support team. WI President Philippa Carruthers Andrew Chilton who joined us at and Dick Beechener the party was responsible for planning and fund raising. Chris Rose, Colin Brown Richard Groom and George Wyatt drove the accommodation vehicle and ensured they were all adequately fed. Dick praised the generosity of all who donated money including both local people and strangers they met on route. The cheque of from Hadleigh Evening WI of £230 brought the total raised to £11,000. The appeal will continue until November. By then it is predicted £15,000 could be raised. Before the meal everyone took the opportunity to look around Ann’s garden and managed to identify 82 different plants flowers and shrubs. Liz Cage treated members to afternoon tea at her home in Layham (see picture). This was preceded by a gentle ramble with her son Chris by the nearby mill and a visit and look around the local St Andrew church. A collection raised £42.00 to be donated to ACWW an organisation affiliated to the WI that supports our less fortunate sisters in developing countries. One more treat this month was a trip to Aldburgh arranged by Maraday Robinson which included a visit to the theatre to see Agatha Christie’s play “Love from a Stranger”. The next meeting will be held on 20th September in the Seminar suite above the Hadleigh library starting 7.30pm. Geoff Evans will give a talk entitled Alaska – Bears, bears and more bears. The New Wolsey Theatre
Unit 2 Seager Court Crockatt Road Hadleigh IP7 6RL
The New Wolsey Theatre is looking for people with a passion for theatre and time on their hands to help spread the word about what the theatre offers – and it’s not just about shows! The New Wolsey is celebrating its 10th Birthday in 2011. It is now a regional theatre with a national reputation for the quality, range and reach of its work and for embracing cultural diversity in the widest sense. The theatre is central to the creative life of Suffolk and seeks to expand the horizons of audiences and artists by presenting a programme designed to entertain, enrich and challenge. This demands an ongoing effort to talk to people about what’s happening, not just forthcoming shows but other artist development initiatives, accessible performances, the Creative Learning programme which aims to provide opportunities for individuals to access innovative high quality arts provision and develop their creative, personal and social skills and so much more. It’s a massive task aided by the existing team of ambassadors who have been working to spread the word in their localities for a number of years now. “We are a team of three,” says Head of Communications Claire Treadwell. “We know direct contact is the most effective way to communicate our offer to the public but we need help to achieve this and have discovered that Ambassadors have local knowledge and access to groups and others we simply don’t have time to develop. Our existing team of Ambassadors is a small powerhouse of knowledge and energy, taking print out to venue in the region and more importantly taking to people who may not be aware of the extent of our programme and other initiatives. It’s also a useful way to get feedback from the public which is very important as our aim is to respond to and reflect the community we serve.” As an Ambassador you will first meet with the team co-ordinator John Adam Baker who will explain the aims of the project and give you an insight into the New Wolsey which may surprise you. Do you for example know that the New Wolsey is a registered charity? Do you know that the New Wolsey works with up to 3,000 young people every year? “Obviously we want people to see the work we present on the main stage at the studio but we also want people to be aware of the ‘additional’ work we do and appreciate and support our wider aims,” says Claire. David Farthing has been an Ambassador since 2009. “Having a closer association with the theatre I feel part of the team. You have the opportunity to deliver a message to the audience before an actor speaks the first line of the script. If you love live productions, it’s a great feeling to encourage others to share that thrill at such good value. It's real, it's live and it's ours, so why not lend a hand to help others realise just how good and accessible the New Wolsey Theatre is.” Gary Kenworthy has been helping to spread the word for two years and says it has been a very rewarding experience. “The theatre itself is a wonderful place to be in and all the people here are very helpful and friendly. I feel that the work I do for the New Wolsey is appreciated and I am made to feel part of the team. When spreading the word about the theatre, I also visit many places and meet people in my own local community. In addition to all this, my role as an Ambassador includes watching as many shows as possible. During the last two years I have seen many shows I may not normally have watched, from comedy to opera, youth and amateur productions. I have enjoyed every single one of them. Please come and join us, I promise you will enjoy yourself and find it a very rewarding experience. So if you want to know more, if you have time to distribute print and to tell people about the New Wolsey please contact us now. In return you become a member of an enthusiastic and much-valued team and you get free tickets to see shows. Contact John at jadambaker@wolseytheatre.co.uk who will get back to you to discuss the role in detail

RNLI Fundraising News Firstly, some great results, for which we thank everyone who contributed so generously: A House to House Collection at the end of May raised the magnificent total of £1035.25, and the Priory Hall Open Gardens afternoon in June, kindly hosted by Cindy and Anthony Hilton, netted £374.75. Our Garden Barbeque in July raised a further £361.90 and we are indebted to David and Janet Jacobs for letting us use their garden and to their very talented family for providing varied and lively music. We are also most grateful for the unstinting support given to the event by Mixers, Andrew’s Butchers, the Co-op and Partridges Farm Shop. You may remember in a previous community news issue that we wrote about our involvement in folk music. We can now announce that we are organising a new venture in the Ansell Community Centre in Market Place, Hadleigh, which will showcase this musical genre that many people are unaware of. "Hadleigh Folk and Acoustic Music Nights" will take place on the first Friday of every month (except April 2012 which will be the second Friday to avoid the bank holiday) starting on September 2nd. Some of you may read this before that date so if you do, come along at 8pm for an evening's entertainment. So on September 2nd, we are starting the series of events with our own band "Crownstreet" (www.myspace.com/crownstreetband ) who play a variety of instruments and sing traditional and contemporary songs. Support for the evening is provided by the duo "Mr and Mrs Coombs" who play unusual and sensitive melodies on cello and mandola. At the beginning of the show we are having an 'open mic' slot of about 30 minutes when performers who wish to play or sing can do so. Anyone wishing to book a place to do this, can call 07818417780, (or email aqwc71@dsl.pipex.com) before the event. For those of you who have missed the first show, don't worry because the next one is happening on October 7th, when our main guests are a duo from Peterborough "The Candle Thieves" (www.myspace.com/thecandlethieves ). These young guys are at the pop end of the folk tradition, writing their own songs and performing them on keyboard, guitar and an array of toy instruments. Support for that night will be provided by Clacton favourite, singersongwriter "Matt Haines" (www.myspace.com/matthew_haines). Again, the earlier part of the evening will be given over to the 'open mic' slots, details as before. We hope that you will enjoy these musical evenings and look forward to seeing you there. Admission is £5 and £2 for open mic performers and concessions. Remember that there is no bar at the Ansell Centre, but you can bring your own drinks. Or you can buy them at the well-stocked corner shop 'Mixers' on the corner of High Street and Church Street. Simon and Val Haines

Climbing plants There are many plants along the Railway Walk that actually climb others around them. Using this method the plant can climb as high as it needs to either get to the top of it’s host, where it can spread its self across the canopy, or drape its self somewhere (along the face of a hedge?) where it gets maximum sunlight. This clever strategy means that they do not need to provide any mechanical strength in the their own stems – they can simply attach them selves to an adjacent tree/bush and hang on tight. Not all of them use the same methods to climb but they all have the same purpose in mind - to spread themselves about by hanging on to other plants. Some times they can become so dense that it can have a very serious effect on their supports How do they do it? White Bryony (Bryonia alba) This plant is a very invasive member of the cucumber family – the only one native to the UK. It is unusual in that it not only climbs upward but makes good mechanical fixings to other plants as it does so. Having once made a fixing it then proceeds to “wind” it’s self in, tight. In Photo 1 you can see the very soft stem pushing upwards, but look at what is happening. The tendril on the right is looking for a twig to grab hold of, and the tendril on the left has found one and “twiddled” it’s tip round it, making a secure mechanical attachment. Look at the lowest stem! A “double- loop” has now formed in it and the plant is using the principal of a “Spanish-windlass” to actually pull its self closer to its support. The really clever thing about this is that the twisted loop not only holds the plant in place, but – because it is twisted in both directions (right and left hand) - it acts like a spring shock absorber, allowing the Bryony to move independently to its support in the wind. Quite clever that! In the autumn the plant produces long skeins of scarlet berries that hang along the hedgerows. Most have seen them but few ever asked how they got there. The whole plant was used in early medicines – particularly those for animals - but is mildly poisonous to humans Honey Suckle.(Lonicera {probably l. periclymenum or “Woodbine”}) This is a really tough plant. The stem consists of an outer layer of very long, strong fibres, making it very strong. To climb, this plant literally twists itself round and round its support in a spiral (helix). Now, one of the properties of a helix is that if you pull on it, it gets longer as you might expect; but it reduces in diameter, and anything inside this reducing diameter is gripped with increasing pressure. In the case of Honeysuckle if anything tries to make it “slipdown” its support, the helix will simply lengthen and tighten it’s grip, and the Honeysuckle stays in place. To the honey suckle this is good practice, but to its host it is a disaster The photo shows a sapling that is trying to increase in size to support its growing crown but the “iron-girdle” formed by the Honeysuckle is preventing it from growing properly. The sapling is being gripped so tightly it is forming the “grooves” sought after by the makers of walking sticks. The honeysuckle might look pretty and smell very nice, but its climbing habit means that the future of its support is not very good at all! Mick T
Friends of St Mary’s Church Annual Meeting 2011, Saturday October 29th at 7.30pm Roy Tricker, who has compiled a new Church Guide, will be speaking about the amazing wealth of beauty and interest that he enjoys as a visitor and pilgrim to St Mary’s Church. The Dame Vera Lynn Trust - Firewalk The Dame Vera Lynn Trust is hoping to gain a few new supporters to their cause on Halloween (Monday 31st October 2011), and are recruiting Firewalkers and their families to come along to Jimmy’s Farm for a fun night of ghost and ghouls walking the hot coals. They are asking fire-walkers to gain sponsorship to help the local School for Parents of children with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties based in Sproughton. It will be the feat of your life, set against the backdrop of the haunted mansion, and to the rhythm of beating drums, firewalkers will attempt to battle the flames! Live music, Halloween delights and hot food should tempt revellers. The Fire-walk itself starts at 8.00pm. Firewalkers will need to arrive from for 5.30pm to undertake the training. If you would like to take part in the fire-walk call Sara Baxter on 01473 652880 or email sara.baxter@dvltrust.org.uk. If you want to spectate, just turn up for free or book a meal in the restaurant beforehand!

A New Era Dawns for Hadleigh’s Playgrounds Babergh District Council and Hadleigh Town Council want to hear from Hadleigh residents about their experiences and views of the town’s playgrounds. Officers at both Babergh District and Hadleigh Town Councils believe the playgrounds in Hadleigh are due for a good overhaul. Both Councils have spent money on individual projects over the past few years but feel that it is now time to stand back, review the progress so far and ask the residents of Hadleigh what developments they would like to see take place in the next few years. The two councils have joined forces and would like to hear from residents and playground users about what they would like to see in the playgrounds in Hadleigh and are launching an informal consultation, starting on August 22nd and running through until the end of September. Questionnaires will be available at the District Council Offices, the Town Council Offices, Hadleigh Library, Hadleigh Swimming Pool and Hadleigh Sports Centre. There will also be an online questionnaire available on Babergh’s website and Hadleigh Town Council’s website and people can give their views until the end of September. Jo Seymour, Babergh’s Horticultural Officer, said: “We have had numerous requests from individuals for improvements to the playgrounds in Hadleigh but before we act on those requests we want to ensure everyone has had the opportunity to voice their opinion. “If we are going to spend a substantial amount of money we need to ensure it is spent wisely and please as many of our playground users as possible. “To this end we would like the views of Hadleigh residents and users of the playgrounds to help build a picture of how the town’s playgrounds are currently used and what they would like to see in the future. We want to know what’s popular and what’s not. “We want to reach as many young people who live in Hadleigh as possible. “I am keen to visit as many local youth groups, mother and toddler groups, nurseries, playgroups, and young people’s projects in order to get as wide a range of views as possible. So if you run any one of these in Hadleigh please contact me. Funding has already been secured through Babergh’s capital programme and there could be further money available from Section 106 development money if there is sufficient support from residents and the playground users. To fill in the online questionnaire, visit: www.babergh.gov.uk or www.onesuffolk.co.uk/HadleighTC and follow the links from the front page. For more information or to talk to the officer leading the consultation, please email jo.seymour@babergh.gov.uk or call 01472 826654.

Hello and welcome to what I hope will become a regular feature of Hadleigh Community News. My aim is to bring you a recipe every month using seasonal produce and celebrating the wealth of food suppliers here in Hadleigh. The hope is to promote local businesses by following the law of BASIL. (Buy And Source It Locally). That way, not only will by Sarah Thompson Hadleigh and the surrounding parts of Suffolk benefit economically, but we are helping to keep our community greener as a result. Primarily, though, the intention is to give you the opportunity to cook something new and source all the ingredients locally. Each month I will divide the recipe into three parts, ingredients, method and sources. (By the way, if you are in the food or drinks industry, you might want to think about taking out advertising space with the Hadleigh Community News – that way I can unashamedly plug your business or food related event). Don’t worry, I am not setting myself up as Hadleigh’s answer to Nigella (delicious though her recipes are) I am simply somebody who enjoys cooking – I went to baking classes at the age of three. And I don’t know about you, but I hate recipes that start with “First, catch your pheasant...!” In my opinion, a good recipe is something that can be easily replicated. So anything I share will have been tried and tested by me. And yes, I have a full time and demanding job (Outside of the catering industry I hasten to add) so timing is everything. Apply BASIL if you can. So how about this for starters?
Recipe for Success
Pear and Stilton Starter (serves 4) Ingredients Four large slices of white bread (suitable for toasting) Two large pears – preferably Conference variety 200 g (approx 8 oz) Stilton cheese Drizzle of walnut oil or handful of chopped walnuts Half a bunch or half a bag of watercress Method Peel, core and thinly slice the pears. Any variety of pear is fine, but Conferences work particularly well. Lightly toast the bread. Crusts may be removed for dinner parties to create more elegance. Cut the Stilton into even slices as thinly as possible. Stilton can be awkward to slice in this way, so don’t panic – all you are aiming for is equal portions to cover the slices of toast. Discard any tired looking leaves or thick stems from the watercress. Place a generous layer of watercress onto each slice of toast. Drizzle with walnut oil or sprinkle on the chopped walnuts. Divide pear slices into four and cover each slice of toast. Do the same with the Stilton, arranging the cheese on the top. Place under hot grill until the Stilton has melted. Sources All the ingredients were bought within the town centre, apart from the pears which were kindly donated to me by a lovely neighbour with enviable fruit trees. Thanks Molly. I hope you will make the most of the various harvest events in Hadleigh this month and celebrate all the wonderful fruits and vegetables this season has to offer. Enjoy!

Film Review with Mat Lucas
Captain America (12A, 124 mins, Joe Johnson) The success of Marvel Studios continues with a summer blockbuster big enough to rival the third Transformers film; Captain America: The First Avenger. The film is one of many superhero movies being released in 2011/12, along with new Spiderman and Batman films. The stars of this film include Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving among others. Joe Johnson is at the helm of this $140 million project; he will now presumably turn his attention to re-booting the Jurassic Park franchise. Captain America, based on the popular comic book series, follows Steve Rogers (Evans) as he turns from a physically small but mentally strong individual into an all round powerful superhero. The plot takes on a number of sub elements, with love interests, friends and war all surrounding the main good vs. evil story. The main plot follows Steve’s transition into Captain America; his transformation is boosted by the scientific experiment that is carried out on him early in the film. Whilst this greatly increases his strength, it also changes his looks and boosts his sex appeal. This element is extremely cheesy yes; however it is also vital for an appealing superhero. To go with the special effects and the plot depth there is also a great amount of humour and, at times, extreme peril. These genre elements are well balanced, as is expected in a comic book adaptation, with laughter and banter being used in between scenes of violence and danger. It is also worth noting that the film goes against genre expectations and gives the main character a surprising amount of emotional depth. Combine this with the characterisation of both the antagonist and his sidekick and the film starts to look like it has the whole package. Captain America: The First Avenger looks, sounds and feels smart. To the average cinemagoer, this film is a perfect blend of action, drama and comedy. For those looking for slightly more from their films, Character development and stunning filming locations are also present. A good, entertaining and well made film is what awaits audiences of Captain America: The First Avenger. Personal Judgement Not as impressive as Thor, both in terms of plot and visuals, however still fantastic summer cinema. Rating 3.5/5

Rotary Review ACTIVITIES: In a traditionally quiet time for the Club an evening out with partners was arranged at the beginning of August and a prty of about 30 people enjoyed a meal at the China Garden in Hadleigh. This was one of the occasional visits by the Club to other eating establishments in the area. SPEAKERS: 1 Tony Golding from EACH came along to update members on the charity generally and the Treehouse Project especially.Together with many local organisations and individuals the Club has been a keen supporter of this project and the Hospice over the years so that members were very pleased to hear that the new hospice was up and running with the major capital items fully funded. Of course, money is still required for many smallr items of furniture etc and also continuously for running costs. In the Ipswich area at present the hospicehas around 70-80 children registered with it and can now take for 6 in patients and families at any one time. Average stay is 1 week and their every comfort is catered for by expert staff. Patients may be referred by hospital, their GP or by their family and decisions regarding admittance are made by a panel from the hospice. If admittance is not available an alternative is care in the home. The total annual cost of running the 3 East Anglia Hospices in Cambridge, Norwich and Ipswich is ÂŁ6.2million 2 Geoffrey Cooley, a member of the Club who has recently moved from Newmarket Club, Geoff is a retired banker but for many years has been a church organist having first become interested at the age of 7.When he was 15 he began lessons at a church nr Croydon where he eventually became organist and choirmaster. He moved regularly with his job and played the organ wherever he went. This incuded many churches in and around Chelmsford, Bury st Edmunds Abbey and Ely cathedral. Whilst working in the City from 1965 to 71 he became musical director of his Bank's Choral Society which performed in many London churches and during this period he had the opportunity to play in St Pauls whilst on another occasion he and his wife were presented to the Queen Mother at a concert where they both performed and she attended. It was especially interesting to learn that whilst based in Ipswich he played the organ at Hadleigh St Mary's when Songs of Praise was broadcast from there in 1979. At that time he was assistant organist at St Mary Le Tower and he accompanied the professional choir based there at many functions in and around Ipswich. 3 Peter Castle, the Club's oldest member, celebrated his 92nd birthday by giving a short talk on 'Tickling Trout'. He was taught the art as a boy by a river warden in Sheffield and caught many fish by this method. He was sometimes in trouble because he did not realise that the local landowner had fishing rights but he was always let off with a warning. As a young man he travelled extensively in Europe on business and once whilst staying on the Belgium/ Holland border he tried his hand successfully in the local river. That evening the trout were cooked and eaten .It was only afterwards that he was told that Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands owned the fishing rights. She never met Peter the Poacher!! FUTURE PROGRAMME: No details are available for September yet but speakers will be at meetings on16, 23 and 30. Visitors are welcomePlease ring the telephone number following. For all information relating to Hadleigh Rotary Club please contact Rotarian Alan Williams tel no 01473 830229

Hello Readers, and welcome to this month’s edition of news from Hadleigh Police Station. I can’t allow this article to go by without mentioning the horrendous and violent attacks on our Nation’s capital last month, and subsequent similar events elsewhere in the Country. I want to make it clear to readers that locally, officers, staff and the wider Police family gave a lot of time and effort to ensure that the streets of Suffolk were kept safe and clear of danger. Whilst the Suffolk Constabulary did send selected officers to London and beyond, all other officers on duty worked extra long hours determined to reduce the fear on our streets. I personally walked the streets of Hadleigh into the small hours way past the end of my tour of duty making sure there was no threat locally. When the streets were clear, I joined colleagues in Ipswich and assisted in dispersing any groups who may have had designs on causing problems. I have to say that we remain very fortunate in this area to live in a society where the public are still prepared to stand up against the mindless thuggery of the minority. Without the support of the public, our job would have been made a lot more difficult than it was, so thanks to all those who spoke out against the disgusting behaviour we all witnessed in the press and media. My thanks go to the local Police Community Support Officer’s who volunteered to stay late when they had no obligation to do so, and to the many Special Constables who put in long hours despite having their day jobs to fulfil. In recent years we have recruited some excellent additions to the Special Constabulary and we are always looking for new faces to come and support our team. If any of you out there are considering becoming a Special, please contact me at the station and I can go through the recruitment process with you. On more local news, work continues to move forward with the proposed Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) which will mean a reduction of alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour on our streets, and I am in the process of redrafting the way in which our licensed premises deal with matters under the Pubwatch scheme. On crime related issues, we are expecting the results from court for an individual who was arrested on suspicion of 9 offences of fraud against local shops and businesses. These should be available soon. I will also be updating you over the coming months with the results of our parking enforcement operation around the Town. Finally, on Saturday 17th September 2011, the Tour of Britain cycle race will be coming through Hadleigh for the Babergh stint. I will be there along with colleagues and will be carrying out bike marking at the Council offices on Corks Lane, so please come and say hello. We also ask for your patience on this day as access to the High Street and Angel Street will be heavily restricted for vehicles. Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club has enjoyed a successful year. Our main aim is to have an evening of fum and enjoy meeting friends from near and far. We meet on Tuesday evenings in the village hall at 7.30 pm and would encourage anyone interested to come and join us or contact Mike Meeks (01473) 827318

Lucy Chapman (Sudbury) Ford Fusion 1.6:
Chris Yule (Capel St Mary) Renault Laguna DCi Estate / Peugeot 206:
“Once we had decided that we wanted a low mileage Ford Fusion, the speed and service was impeccable, with two options given to us within a matter of days. The car was collected in pristine condition just as we were told it would be. Any queries or problems we had were dealt with quickly and efficiently. Nothing was too much trouble. When we require a new car, we would have no hesitation on using Kersey Car Sales again.”
“My wife and I bought a Peugeot 206 from KCS and shortly afterwards we asked Stuart to try and find us a Renault Laguna diesel estate. I was quite choosey about the colour and model but Stuart acted swiftly in finding the right car. A number of vehicles were offered some outside our price range, so we had several options before committing. I paid a deposit for the car despite not seeing it (I was assured it would be immaculate) and when we collected it was in excellent condition. We were also supplied with a service and new MOT. Overall an excellent service.”

Hadleigh Healing Society The word RESPECT has been bandied around so much in the newspapers, TV etc over the last few weeks. You have to ask yourself what does that word mean to you and how does it effect you in your every day life. It means different things to different people of different age groups. The older generation were brought up to respect the law, their parents, and property. The young have questioned these values and some do not accept the necessity for them. They crave respect for themselves but do not give it to others. It is such a sad reflection of our society today, but there are those who will pitch in and clear the destruction that others have inflicted. This action gives us all hope for the future. We all acknowledge times are tough and perhaps will get tougher but if everyone respects and helps the other person we will pull through. We, at Hadleigh Healing Society are always there to help you by listening. Please contact us if you need help, telephone: 01473 823282 for an appointment (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org for information.

My life at The Shelley Centre Ah! That’s good: I feel much better after my annual maintenance with joints oiled and circuits tweaked. However, it does remind me that the autumn term will soon start so for all of you out there, Riders and Helpers alike don’t forget; Monday 12th September is the day term starts! Just thinking about it, in the past I’ve said a lot about our Riders and other factors that make our Centre work but, what of our Helpers? Why does someone come to help at The Centre? What do they get from it? Well, let me tell you of two of our Helpers: Brian who has been with us for many years and Nico who joined us only one year ago. Brian came to us via the Hadleigh Volunteer Bureau and had retired from nursing which gave him plenty of experience working with people of all ages and abilities: the fact that he had previously worked with horses and enjoyed D.I.Y. were skills that would prove very beneficial to The Centre. He is a member of the Wednesday Group and helps groom and tack up the lead horses, or walk beside the horses to support Riders as well as engaging with them in various activities. Brain says “It is this aspect of my work at Shelley that I find most fulfilling. To see the Riders develop their riding ability, or their communication and social skills, make eye contact or speak to someone, or to walk more freely is truly inspiring.â€? His driving and riding abilities are put to good use by keeping one of our horses, Jet, happy and healthy and as part of a small team he is involved with stable work and he also looks after the Herd at weekends and holidays. Furthermore, with his D.I.Y. skills he works throughout the year helping to keep The Centre in good order as well as leading a team who undertake the cleaning, repair and maintenance of both paddocks and buildings. Again, Brian comments “This all takes place in a beautiful setting and in the fresh air, and I have met so many lovely people along the way. What more could a man ask for in retirement? One could say that helping at Shelley can also be therapeutic for the Volunteers too!â€? By the way, Brain was Shelley Centre Volunteer of the Year for 2009. Nico, on the other hand, was encouraged to come to Shelley by an existing Helper and she is now a member of the Tuesday Morning Group. Nico says “Everyone at The Centre is so helpful and encouraging, which made it easy to settle in. I really had no idea how much joy it would bring me to see the Riders happy faces and witness the progress that they have made.â€? The Centre is continuously looking for Helpers to enable us to bring down the waiting list of Riders, even if it is for only two hours in a morning or afternoon, so if after reading this you feel inspired please contact us: on line, via our Website, you can read more about RDA and The Centre and download a Helpers Application Form, or telephone or email us theshelleycentre@aol.com after which why not come and see us at work to help you decide if this is for you? Although some Helpers have horse handing experience, it is not necessary, so don’t be put off if you are not used to being with horses‌‌Finally, another reminder to all to come and join us for the Long Distance Sponsored Ride through the beautiful Suffolk countryside which takes place on Sunday 18th September. To obtain details and an Entry Form, contact Maggie Rayner at Heath Farm, Hadleigh Heath, Suffolk IP7 5NY or via email maggierayner@hotmail.com it’s a great day out! Photograph for the website banner We need a photograph to run along the top of each page that immediately shouts “You are in Layham”. Would photographers in the village like to submit suggestions for something with more impact than the existing photograph? Please mail suggestions to michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net for consideration by the Parish Council
Letter from Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 27 July were; • Theft of a catalytic converter from a car in Brett Green • Criminal damage to a car parked in Old Orchard • There is concern about cars driving over and parking on grasses amenity areas in the village. Councillors will look at the sites in question. • It has transpired that if the National Grid goes ahead with building pylons to carry electricity from the coast that Route 2 will be used. That route is through our village. The preference of the Parish Council is that the power lines should be ‘undergrounded’ through the Brett Vale. Councillors are attending a meeting with representatives of the National Grid in August. • Our County Councillor suggested it is unlikely that mobile library rounds can be sustained in the current financial climate. There is no plan to stop the visits to Upper Layham at present. • The owners of Pipkin House have been asked to submit a retrospective planning application for the extension they have built on the rear of their property. • Councillors supported the application by the owner of Turner’s Cottage, Stoke Road to build a rear extension to the building. • A new and up-to-date ‘Welcome to Layham’ booklet has been produced for new residents. The booklet will be available for existing residents to download from the Parish website shortly. • It was agreed to have an ‘official opening ceremony’ for new waste management site on Saturday 1 October. • It was agreed to seek someone to re-paint the two telephone boxes and then to consult the people of the village on how they can best be used. • A Traditional Orchard survey is to be carried out in the coming months by the Tree Warden. Information gathered will be sent to the Suffolk Biodiversity Partnership. • It was agreed to request SCC Highways to remove loose gravel from the section of road in our Parish that is part of the National Cycle Route. • The members of the Parish Council are to take part in village ‘walkabouts’ in the coming months in order that they are all familiar with every corner of the village. • The Internal Audit of Parish Council accounts was considered and accepted.
Parish Website www.layham.org
Welcome to Layham Our revised and updated ‘Welcome to Layham’ booklet is the hard copy, slimmed-down version of the new website. It contains all the essential information for new arrivals and is the ‘safety net’ to ensure that everyone, whether computer owners or not, have access to that information. The booklet will be delivered to new residents shortly after they arrive in the village. As existing residents will be familiar with its content, the Parish Council has decided, in the interests of keeping costs down, not to spend your money by sending a copy to everyone. Should you be really keen to have one you will soon be able to download the text from the new Parish Website. If you are not able to do that and still feel you would like one then you should contact Jane Cryer, the Clerk to the Council, on 07920 713940
‘Official Opening’ of our new Recycling Centre Saturday 1 October 2011 at 11.00 am The new recycling centre, situated at the Brett Green entrance of the Playing Field, will be officially opened on 1st October at 11.00 am. As reported in a previous article, this important new facility has been constructed with help from funding by the Big Lottery Fund. The construction work was awarded to local builder Brian Smith and the work was completed within two weeks. There are currently three recycling banks - for glass, textiles and cans. Every effort is being made to provide more facilities for villagers to recycle additional items. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible at the opening.
Our two telephone boxes The Parish Council has purchased the two telephone boxes from British Telecom for a nominal sum. They will be repainted in Post Office Red in the coming months and will remain important parts of the village landscape. Suggestions are now being sought as to what they might be used for. At the very least they could be used as large, dry notice and information boards. It is even possible that one or both could be moved to more useful locations. A suggestion has already been received that one might be used as a paperback lending library. There is one in Settle (N.Yorks) that is used as an art gallery. Another is used to house scarecrows – with a different one being made each month for a year! The Parish Council would like to hear from you – please phone or email the Clerk to the Council (Jane Cryer) on 07920 713940 or layhampc@gmail.com or talk to any member of the Council.

The Big Butterfly Count The charity Butterfly Conservation put out an appeal for groups and individuals to record butterflies seen during the period 16-31 July 2011. Rosey and Laurence Nicholls agreed to carry out an observation in the conservation area of
Layham Playing Field and recorded and photographed nine different species (Brown Argus, Common Blue, Essex Skipper, Green Veined White, Large Skipper, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Small White, Specked Wood). This is encouraging for those who have worked to develop the area as a haven for wildlife. If you are interested in helping to develop the area further then the Playing Field Management Committee would be delighted to hear from you contact Terri Newman on 01473 824993.
Successful swallows A brood of five swallows was successfully raised in the garage of Martin and Sally Looker despite the unusual nest site.
Stolen car parts The police were called to Brett Green in July to look into the loss of a catalytic converter removed from under a 4x4 type vehicle during the night. It is suggested that owners of cars fitted with catalytic converters mark them well with their post code. It is also suggested that, if the car has to be left outside, that it would help to park it over a heavy raised object (such as a railway sleeper) thus making access to the underside of the vehicle more difficult.

Will you take the Budget Challenge? Community groups and residents across Babergh and Mid Suffolk are being encouraged to take part in Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s Budget Challenge. Like many councils, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are facing severe cuts in budgets for next year. Reductions in the amount of money received from the Government, increases in inflation and demand on services, means that by working together, £2.8m in savings need to be found in order to balance the books for 2012/13. This could come from savings or by looking at ways to increase further income. Mid Suffolk Cllr Derrick Haley, portfolio holder for finance said: “Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have already begun to look at ways of achieving these tough saving targets, these include by joining our staffing structures together (known as integration), and improving how we both purchase goods and services from outside suppliers but this is not enough. We need to do more.” For the following two years (2013-15), the two councils need to find an additional £4.6m worth of savings in total from a combined budget of £20m. Babergh District Cllr Nick Ridley, Chairman of the Strategic & Financial Planning Task Group explained that, “this is not a formal consultation, rather it is an open call for ideas to help us balance our books in tough times. Never before have either of our councils reached out to organisations, community groups and residents so early in the budget process. We are totally serious about getting them involved in coming up with their ideas which we can then evaluate in the autumn before drawing up detailed budget proposals”. During August and September, both councils are encouraging residents to take part in the budget challenge by answering five questions about the way in which the council currently works and how services might run in the future. All responses received will be considered by both councils when looking at the budget in more detail between now and the end of the year. To take part you can find out further information online: www.babergh.gov.uk or www.midsuffolk.gov.uk or by speaking with your local district councillor.

‘To Build or Not to Build’ ‘To Build or Not to Build’ on BBC1 on Wednesday 21 September is featuring the build of The Kennels in Polstead. Ray and Wendy Black, who have lived in Polstead since 2002, replaced an old bungalow, which was once had otterhound kennels with a four bedroom house in a vernacular style. They both loved the look of the old Suffolk cottages but did not want the maintenance that goes with those properties so they have created a house with an old look but without the intensive upkeep. The house took just six months to complete with the landscaping done a few months later. The programme shows the various stages of the build and is hosted by Simon O’Brien of Brookside fame who also co-presented ‘To Buy or Not to Buy’.

Hadleigh Community First Responders have been running their car for just over a year now and it is becoming well recognised within the town. We would like to thank those drivers who have given way to us and helped us on our way to emergency calls. We are not allowed blue lights nor two tone horns and must drive within the speed limit so it is only through your cooperation that we can arrive at the address of the person with a medical emergency within the 8 minute target we are set. This time starts from when the person dials 999 so allowing for talking to control and them allocating us to the call we actually get less than 5 minutes to respond. Having the car has enabled us to attend more calls and we are grateful to all those who have donated money to keep it running as it costs us around £125 per month. In the first half of this year we attended an average of 19 calls per month and our responders we on call for an average of 587hrs per month (Over 80% of time), not bad when you consider that there are currently only 4 of us available. This figure has recently dropped to under 60% due to other commitments so we are desperately seeking new recruits. As we work with the NHS Ambulance service the application process can seem to take a long time. This is due to Criminal Record Bureau checks, and the organisation of training courses, and I know some people have given up on applying, but I would urge them to consider us again. In this age of cut backs it is good to be able to report that the Trust have made more resources available for Responder training. We have a website www.hadleigh.respondersuk.org that has current information and our contact details together with a donation page. There is also the opportunity to put banner advertising on our site for a modest fee. We would also welcome long term sponsorship of our car and the appropriate sign writing with logo could be arranged. One last thing. As the nights draw in I ask that you take a look at the front of your home from the road. Can you clearly see your house number or name. Now think about 3am in the pouring rain. If you cant see it when you know where it is how do you expect the ambulance service to find you quickly? Trevor Sheldrick Co-ordinator Hadleigh CFR group Tel. 823128

Here Come The Toys! St Elizabeth Hospice is urging parents and pre-schools to dig out the playthings children no longer use and hand them to their Hadleigh shop during its 2011 Toy Amnesty. Unwanted toys can be taken to the shop in Maiden Way during September. The aim is to get parents having an end of summer holidays clearout to hand in the toys children have outgrown. And once the school term starts, they are also encouraging Suffolk preschools and playgroups to hold their own mini-collections and hand over donations in bulk to the Hospice. The donated toys will be sold in special toy sections of the shops across Suffolk from October half term, to raise money for the charity, which costs £6.6m a year to run and relies on fundraising. This is the second annual toy amnesty and last year’s was a great success. To find out more call 01473 723600 or visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk
GRO Landscapes Wins Silver Gilt Medal Garden Designer and Landscape contractor Guy Ormes of GRO Landscapes recently entered a show garden for Sandringham Flower Show last week and was awarded a Silver Gilt Award for their garden "Ripple" The garden was based on the theme of raindrops and the ripples they create when hitting water. Constructed by Guy & Vicky Ormes and Jack Warner using a range of natural slate paddlestone and cobbles for the ripples, complimented with soft plantings of Agapanthus and Hucheras and specially commissioned glass raindrops. The garden was judged by celebrity television garden designers Chris Beardshaw and Alan Mason shown sitting in the arbour of the garden. This was the first time we entered Sandringham Flower Show and hope to build a garden there again next year. The Sandringham Medal adds to our RHS and professional accreditation status within the landscape design and build industry. Pause for thought “Keep young and beautiful....” As the old song goes. I had to smile at a news report recently. A dating agency for exclusively beautiful people had its database hacked into. 20,000 “non-beautiful” clients were added by the hacker. I would have loved to have seen their faces when they met on their first blind date. I can’t help but wonder what the criteria were the agency used to define beauty. For me, it’s the face of an elderly nun walking the streets of Calcutta, or the blood smeared face of a carpenter looking down from a cross speaking the words “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing”. True beauty. Rather than craving for eternal youth, or saving up for a face lift or a hair transplant for the increasing bald patch - I pray thee O Lord that I may be beautiful within. He will share with us some of the features which inspire and amaze him and also some of the mysteries which baffle him. Roy is a Licensed Reader, an Emeritus Lay Canon and has been a crusading church-crawler since the age of four! Wine and nibbles will be served during the evening.
B Natural - Bildeston's Music Festival Bildeston's first ever music festival, B Natural, is happening over the weekend of the 9th, 10th and 11th September. Showcasing a broad sweep of fantastic local talent, B Natural will thrill and inspire with its use of gardens, coal-sheds, front-rooms, pubs, the chapel and the market square to stage its wildly eclectic line-up. After a Friday night of bands at Chamberlin Hall, headed by Underline The Sky and This Boy Wonders, Saturday kicks off with a rousing performance by Samba Suffolk One on a specially-erected stage under the Clock Tower. Lydia Lockyer and the Joseph Taylor Duo are among the acts playing all afternoon in the square. Meanwhile, a unique musical walkway will take visitors around the gardens of Bildeston, to hear all kinds of soloists, ensembles and buskers, including singers from Suffolk Opera. Bildeston primary school will perform, and children can learn to play samba drums and make their own instruments. The evening's highlight is Indie Night at Chamberlin Hall, with celebrated breakthrough bands The Cads, These Ghosts and IntotheNorthSea heading a lively line-up. There will be acoustic performers at the King's Head throughout the weekend, while the Bildeston Crown is hosting Daniel Bayliss playing jazz funk, a unique 'Barbara Shop Quartet' of girl a capella singers followed by dancing to the polished Turntable. On Sunday, festival-goers are invited to a convivial musical brunch in Bildeston's idyllic market square to the sound of gentle strings and soothing strumming. The festival concludes with an afternoon concert of popular choral classics by the reknowned Stowmarket Chorale, followed by esteemed pianist William Fergusson accompanying the lush, soaring voice of Lisa Cassidy. Events at the village pubs are free to all, while a Festival Pass to many of the performances costs £5. Tickets for the choral concert and band nights are priced between £5-£7, and all are available on the weekend and in advance online at www.bnatural.bildeston.org.

Cancer Charity Launch Annual Fundraiser Macmillan Cancer Support is once again preparing for its largest annual fundraising event, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. With 2011 marking the charity’s 100th anniversary, Macmillan is committed to making this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning the biggest one ever. Though the given date for the event is 30th September 2011, participants are reminded that they can hold their Coffee Morning for the charity on any date of their choosing. Whether at home, in the church hall, at the village fete, on the beach or in your workplace, a Coffee Morning for Macmillan can take place anywhere you choose. It’s all about having fun, eating cake and making a big difference. Even £1 can help cancer patients and their loved ones across the region and beyond receive vital emotional, medical, practical or financial support. Last year 43,000 people across the nation made their cuppa count, raising a staggering £8 million for people living with cancer. As treatments improve, people are living with cancer for longer meaning the work of Macmillan is needed more than ever. World’s Biggest Coffee Morning turns 21 this year too so there is even more reason to put the kettle on. Local fundraising manager Holly Lambert can’t wait for this year’s event. “I was so inspired by how many people took part in coffee morning last year and some of the really great ideas they had to raise lots of money. It’s such a good opportunity to take a break, chat to colleagues, neighbours, friends or family and of course, have fun while raising money for people affected by cancer. We’ve got a great team in the local office ready to support everyone that signs up even if they can’t do it on the official day.” Registrations are now open. Go to coffee.macmillan.org.uk or call 0845 602 1246 to receive your free fundraising pack and help make 2011’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning the biggest one ever for Macmillan Cancer Support.

We hope everyone has been having a wonderful summer! Well done to all the children in Key Stage 2 for devising and performing a wonderful production about the Second World War. All of the scenes were scripted by the children and they really made the war years come to life with a variety performance that included drama, singing, dancing and comedy. The final performances were the culmination of lots of hard work! Thanks to all those who supported the children, particularly Miss Staples and the High School students who provided musical accompaniment. The Year 6 children enjoyed a fascinating morning exploring the Bibles at the Bible Exhibition at St Mary’s Church. They researched the history of the King James Bible and found lots of differences and similarities between different versions. We liked looking at the children’s Bibles and family Bibles, which give information about all the births and special events in a family’s history. We are grateful to the adults who gave up their time to direct the children’s investigations and answer questions. Students from the High School organised a workshop for gifted and talented writers from local primary schools, hosted at St Mary’s. This was an excellent event, which gave children a chance to talk about their writing with other enthusiastic writers. Some terrific writing was produced on the day and all the children who attended benefited enormously. Well done to all involved on the day! We bid a fond farewell to the Year 6 children who are moving up to High School. They had a packed final week at St Mary’s, which included a leavers’ service at the church followed by tea with their parents, a leavers’ assembly and a fun day at Boxford Spinney. Thank you to Helen Matter, the schools’ advisor for the Diocese, who gave an exciting talk at the service. The children baked all the cakes and biscuits for the tea party and then they were marvellous waiters and waitresses at the party, serving refreshments and cakes to the huge crowd who came to the service. The Year 6s helped to create a fun atmosphere when they gave out their own amusing certificates to one another. At Boxford Spinney, Mrs Powell and her Guiding team set up a range of great team-building exercises and activities. The children had a brilliant time with non-stop laughter making some of the activities quite difficult! They especially enjoyed cooking their own stir fry for lunch. We wish the Year 6 pupils lots of luck for High School and beyond.

New helicopter arrives in region A new helicopter arrived in the region last week and will be used to help save lives across Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. The Eurocopter EC135 will be used by the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) across the four counties in order to get their clinical teams to medical emergencies when their expertise and specialist equipment is required. Tim Page, Chief Executive of EAAA, said; “We are very excited that we have received the EC135, which will greatly enhance our current capability. The EC135 is larger and more capable than the aircraft which it will replace, and will enable us to carry more people and equipment – increasing our ability to save the lives of those who suffer accidents or medical emergencies. We will also be able to train more doctors to work on our air ambulances and, in the event that we have to transport a child to hospital, enable a parent to accompany them. The charity currently operates with two Bolkow 105 helicopters, provided by Bond Air Services whilst it tenders for a new long-term supplier. Mr Page continued: “We are very grateful to Bonds for providing the EC135, which will replace one of the red helicopters which have been in the skies for the last few months. The aircraft will alternate between our two bases, which means that many people across East Anglia and beyond will now once again see a yellow helicopter in the sky. The Eurocopter135 helicopter became operational on Saturday 13 August, and will divide its time between the Norwich and Cambridge Airport bases to ensure the best coverage of the region at all times. The air ambulance is funded solely by public donation, and works in close partnership with the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust and hospitals throughout the region. Helicopters are manned by doctors specialising in the treatment of life-threatening injuries or medical emergencies, and by critical care paramedics.

This year sees the 40th birthday of Hadleigh Swimming Club. Over the last 40 years the swimming club has taught youngsters and adults to swim and given them the opportunity to compete all over Suffolk. We are celebrating this occasion with a BIG get together of past and present members on Friday 16th September, there will be a BBQ, and Fun Swim for the youngsters. We would love to see anyone who has been involved in the swimming club over the last 40 years, so if you or anyone you know has been a member then please contact Jackie on 01473 828968, or pop down to the pool on a Monday or Wednesday evening to see us all.
Many thanks to everybody in Angel Street and Bell Mews, once again, for your donations to this year's Barnardo's House to House Collection. You very generously gave a total of ÂŁ130.84. Once again, I particularly wish to thank Harry Forbes, my godson, who gave up his valuable time to help me. Your donations will directly bring vital projects to life, enabling Barnardo's to help vulnerable children and young people transform their lives and fulfil their potential. So a big thank you from everyone at Barnardo's. Well done! .BSL 5IPNQTPO $PNQBOZ %JSFDUPS

‘Why did I join Slimming World?’ It should’ve been an awful photo, - another health warning from the doctors - or the shock of my size 20 jeans feeling too tight, - feeling older then I should, - constant aches and pains. But it wasn’t. It was because everyone else seemed to be joining and finding it easy so I thought I’d give it chance, thinking if I lost just 10lbs I would feel fitter. I put off going to slimming groups because I always thought I’d have to do lots of weighing and measuring or have to eat separate meals to the rest of the family; and the thought of dry crispbreads with cottage cheese was too much to bear! I found there was a new group starting on a Thursday night at 7:30pm, the time suited me perfectly the children would’ve had their dinner, be in bed and hubby would be home from work to sit them. The first time I went, Yvonne Skinner the Slimming World consultant was there to greet me and other new members. She explained the Extra Easy plan; and the clue is in the title – it is so easy! The group was so warm and friendly. I went home and read the books. I could have normal family meals, lots of pasta, rice, eggs, lean meats, fruit and vegetables. I didn’t have to live on cottage cheese and crispbreads! I did have to measure some foods but no way as much as I thought. I lost 3lbs in the first week and got my half stone award within 3 weeks. Some weeks I didn’t lose, other weeks I lost up to 5lbs then there were gains too, but I kept going, knowing the plan worked. I enjoyed going to the group. I’d made some lovely friend’s, Yvonne always made us giggle. Some nights we’d have a taster evenings, everyone brought in foods that they’d made and we could all sample it. I finally reached my target, losing over 4 stones -another great thing about slimming world is you choose your own personal target weight. Being slimmer is amazing, I feel younger, my back doesn’t hurt, and to pull on a size 12 pair of jeans is fantastic. I didn’t think I could do it but I wanted to be a size 12 more than I wanted to cheat the plan, I guess that’s the secret to slimming, and getting the support of a group who share your journey to a healthier, happier life. To contact Yvonne call 07971 921093
Dawn Langford Linda and John Willis would like to say a very big thank you to the many people who sent cards, flowers and words of comfort in the loss of their daugther Dawn. A special thank you goes out to Carol Bartrum & Ross Beckett who were a tremendous support during Dawn's illness and were of great comfort to us both. Our biggest thanks goes to our children David and Denise, thank you both so much for everything you have done. For those of you who knew Dawn i'm sure you will agree she was a very special and unique person, and was loved by many. Her funny little ways are what made her so very special. Hadleigh and District Flower Club A very big thank you to all the members and friends of the club who supported our charity Garden Party on Sunday 17th July at Priory Hall Hadleigh. We did have brilliant sunshine, but the occasional shower of rain prevented us taking full advantage of Mr and Mrs Hiltons’ beautiful grounds. Fortunately the hall provided plenty of room for a full afternoon tea to be enjoyed, with Pimms also available. The members of the committee worked very hard to make the afternoon a success, running a plant stall, tombola and providing and serving the food and drinks. We were let down by the Air Ambulance not turning up with their stall of fundraising items and information, but in spite of that £1002.30 was raised and a cheque for that amount will be presented at the next Flower Club meeting on Tuesday 13th September to a representative of the Air Ambulance. With out the support from Chaplin Catering (allowing us free use of their china) and Mr and Mrs Hilton donating the use of their function room and grounds, raising over a thousand pounds would have been difficult so we do sincerely thank them for their support.
Hadleigh & District Garden Club Visit to Hyde Hall on 21st June 2011 By Mr John Harris The gardening club fixtures list said July outing 'Hyde Hall' I had missed the talk given in May by Andrew Hellman "Hyde Hall Past Present and Future" so when the visit was brought forward that was a bonus. My 'sat nav’ failed me in finding Hyde Hall but my back up 'wife nav' helped. It transpired that a new entrance had been constructed some distance from the old one. We made it just in time to meet up with twenty other members of the club. Hyde Hall is a garden owned by the R. H.S. it was previously a working farm of 360 acres purchased by Dr. and Mrs. Robinson in 1955. The valley that it sits in is an area of sticky clay with a mound or hill in the middle with a farm house on top. This has gravel and a clay cover. The Robinsons decided to make the area into a garden despite the drying winds that the site enjoys and the sticky clay. Club members had heard that since the R.H.S. had taken over the garden, water management and treatment of the clay was of prime interest. The paths around the garden total some 2.1 Km. there are golf type buggies to carry those not quite up to walking the distance or climbing the sloping paths. The walk up the hill past the Australian and New Zealand garden was interesting with many plants from those parts of the world. Descriptions of the medicinal and other uses of the plants, Sp. phormium by the native populations were adjacent on the name tags. The dry garden interested members too, having suffered a very cold winter followed by such a dry spring seeing how those who should know coped, was revealing. Mulches and lots of organic compost seemed the answer. The clay soil by the car park where a new orchard was beingplanted showed fissures like a miniature earthquake. Walking along the hilltop gardens along the Rose Rope walk, and the Shrub Rose borders was sheer delight. The upper pond had thousands of fish and some were as long as 60 cms. But most impressive was the grass in the garden lawns. You could walk on it! No restrictions! The sward was short but thick. It had the feel underfoot of a very good quality carpet. There was information that showed the reason for such beautiful turf. The soil underneath was washed from the sugar beet in processing, it was screened, puddled, settled, and conditioned by a kind of composting and then used. When the grass is up the lawns are fertilised with leachate from the compost heaps. The woodland garden had Azaleas and Rhododendrons so it must have been quite acid. It was all most impressive. Oh what one can do with lots of volunteer staff, oodles of organic compost on a near industrial scale to grow plants. The visit was organised by Carole Cranston to whom we are all very grateful.

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts I like "Busy Lizzies" (Impatiens), but I have not grown them this year. It appears that this was a lucky choice because a lot of peoples plants have been affected by a fungus disease, and the growers are saying that it is so bad that they may not grow any for sale next year. The disease first appeared in the UK in 2003, and was being controlled, but it is thought that the fungus has developed resistance to the fungicides used by commercial growers. The fungus does not at present affect the New Guinea Impatiens, or the Himalayan Balsam which is growing wild in profusion along many rivers and canals. Yesterday I picked a 1lb 6oz (0.7 kg) tomato. This was from a heritage tomato that I grow called "Yellow Stuffer", and yes it is a lovely yellow/orange colour. You do not get very many tomatoes per plant, but they have a lovely flavour, and you can use them for a number of purposes beside stuffing. By the way the record for a tomato is over 7 lb. Using that up would be a challenge. One of the memories I have from childhood is the display of Schizanthus, sometimes called "The Poor Man's Orchid", which my father grew in his greenhouse. He selected plants and kept his own seed, and I kept this strain going for a few years, and then lost it. All the varieties available are annuals and come from about 15 species. This year I decided to grow a few again, and at present I have a beautiful display in my greenhouse. Some varieties are hardy, and some half hardy. Growing in pots one can either sow the seed in March or April for flowering in August September, or in August or September for flowering in the Spring. If sowing about now one needs somewhere frost free for them through the Winter. Open Gardens in September Corner Cottage Gislingham Sunday 4 Moverons Brightlingsea Sunday 4 Larks Hill Tuddenham St Martin Saturday 17 Woodwards Coddenham Sunday 18 Weather Records In July we had 53 mm (2.1") of rain, which is just about our average monthly rainfall. At the end of July the 3 month running total figure stood at 151 mm (5.9"), which is roughly the average figure. In July the maximum temperature was 25 Cel (77F) which is the coolest July maximum since I started including temperatures. The minimum was 9 Cel (48F) which is about average for July. In my garden the ground temperature in mid July is 15 Cel (59F) which is slightly cooler than average. Hints One can take cuttings of a lot of plants like fuchsias and geraniums (zonal pelargoniums) in September, but it is only worth doing if you have somewhere frost free to keep the rooted cuttings over Winter. September is also a good time to plant bulbs in containers for flowering around Christmas time or early in the New Year. There are 3 choices as to how you plant them :a) Plant them in ordinary pots with drainage holes using ordinary potting compost. In this case the pots will need to stand in saucers to protect furniture when they are in the house in flower. (b) Grow them in glazed containers with no drainage holes. To do this they must be grown in special bulb fibre and more care will be needed over watering. (c) Grow them in special vases in water. This used to be quite popular for hyacinths and crocuses. If you have children in the house why not dig out those old glass containers, and let them have a go. For all bulbs being grown for the house, it is important that the roots grow before the leaves and flower. The way to achieve this is to grow the bulbs for a time after they have been planted in a cool dark place. This not easy in a modern house. Generally they are a bit too warm. Covered up in a garden shed is probably OK, particularly if it is not in full sun. My answer is to put them in the attic, but then you have to remember to look at them and water them regularly. Dear Sir
Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk
Dear Sir To the boys who, on Saturday 30th July knocked down an old lady of 84 walking her dog, racing on bikes down a footpath near Toppesfield Gardens, swore at her for being there. She then spent four hours on Sunday in hospital and again on Monday and has broken her left foot, she is in plaster for six weeks, also has a badly bruised right leg and blood clot in the back of her knee, I hope you are in as much pain. P. Jacobs
Dear Sir My ‘other woman,’ as the wife refers to her, is a pert 47 year-old redhead – an MG car. She needed an operation and pending arrival of a spare part, the hospital performing the work – Ainger Holbrow’s garage in the High Street – offered to store the car the very same day I reported the problem. The spare – ordered by ‘phone – arrived the next day and was fitted by the afternoon. At 9.00am the following day I received a call to say that the patient had recovered and was ready for collection! ‘Well Done’, Ainger Holbrow – Brilliant service, and at a modest cost. We are wellserved in this lovely old town of ours by a huge range of local skills and services. We need to support their continued survival. Les Selby, Hadleigh
Dear Sir I am writing to you after reading a letter in your May edition relating to Hadleigh’s cemetery. I must agree with the writer saying how tranquil the setting is and how beautifully kept it has been. HOWEVER I feel I must write to you to say how upset I was that having put cards in holders on a grave at Hadleigh cemetery two days later they were gone! I hope that whoever done this realizes they are not just taking the sentiment away from me but also the people who are buried there. I am sad to think that this has happened. Have people no respect for those who have departed and those left behind. M Skinner
Dear Sir Congratulations to Howard Gibbons (and Frank) and to all those who do not want Tesco in Hadleigh you win again. Also congratulations to the people of Manningtree who will be getting a Tesco by the end of next year. As to Hadleigh though I have heard all the arguments and I would like to ask how you can spoil the river walk, there is nothing better than five foot high stinging nettles to look at as you walk the path. Some of us want Tesco, maybe not on the Brettworks but at least Tesco are willing to do something about the site. David Hammond

Dear Sir Please may I make an appeal through your letters page to make contact with any United States Air Force personnel who served at RAF Bentwaters or RAF Woodbridge. This year is the 60th anniversary of the arrival to the UK of the US Air Force air defence unit, the 81st Fighter Interception Wing. Deployed to Europe to strengthen the newly created NATO alliance, the F-86 Sabre jets arrived at RAF Shepherds Grove air base near Stanton Suffolk and shortly thereafter moved to their permanent base at RAF Bentwaters near Woodbridge also in Suffolk. The Wing went on to serve the NATO controlled forces in providing firstly defence of UK airspace, nuclear deterrent and “tank busting” until 1993 when the Cold War had been won and the USAF presence in the UK was reduced. On the 25th of September the Bentwaters Cold War Museum are celebrating this anniversary and we are asking members of the public from the East Anglian region to contact us to share their memories of the American presence. We would especially like to find any veterans who served at Bentwaters and nearby Woodbridge bases that now live in the UK and we would be most grateful to receive contact from ex servicemen and women as soon as possible. Whatfield Players Auditions have now been completed and the casts chosen for the new show. On November 17th and 18th, a Thursday and Friday evening, three one act plays will take the stage at Whatfield Village Hall. The plays, all comidies, are widely different. “Here Be Dragons”, is set in the reception area of a Health Centre. “The Help Committee”, tells of a group who gather, to clean up and prepare a vicarage, in readiness for the new incumbent. The third play, “In Terminal Chat”, concerns a variety of passengers who meet up in the departure lounge of an airport. Our last production resulted in a £500 donation to the Whatfield Village Hall refurbishment fund. Decisions have yet to be made regarding a charity we will support in November. It affects over 9,000 in the UK. Over 2 million carry the faulty gene which causes CF. Each week 5 babies are born with CF. Each week 2 young lives are lost to CF. Only half of those with CF are likely to reach their late 30s. There is no cure. The CF Trust funds research to find an effective treatment through gene therapy. The Trust believes that this will be the nearest thing to a cure in the foreseeable future.

Why Practise Yoga ? I am sure all readers know what yoga is about – in general terms, at least – so I would like to focus this brief article on why anyone would want to practice yoga. What would be the benefits in taking up yoga and maintaining a regular practice? Movement and Stretching: Although physical movement is only one aspect of what yoga is about, this is the part that most people are aware of and the part that is most often incorporated into group classes in Europe. One of the most important things any of us can do for our bodies is to move each joint through its full range of movement each day. Many yoga postures also help to improve muscle tone and strength. Leading on from that, it is also important to stretch and lengthen our muscles, to reduce the risk of stiffness and tightness building up in and around our joints. Correct Breathing and Breath Control: It is well-known that much of the time most of us only use a small proportion of our lung capacity. The effect of poor breathing goes beyond the lungs as it also has an effect on our mood, posture and energy levels. Yoga helps improve breath control and the fundamental link between movement and breathing. State of wellbeing: Very simply put, this is the essential aim of yoga. Correct movement, stretching and correct breathing all lead towards a state of equilibrium but specific practices can help calm stress levels or increase energy levels, as appropriate. On another level, meditation and concentration exercises can help centre us and draw us back towards a state a harmony. Please contact: Nick Webber purplenick@btinternet.com, 07939 226117, 01473 824251

New Hearing Aid Recycling Scheme Launched Local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, have this month launched their brand new appeal to help thousands of hard-of-hearing individuals who have limited financial resources across the World. The Suffolk Hearing Aid Recycling Scheme, which has been created in co-operation with Lions International, requires members of the public to donate unwanted, unused or broken hearing instruments, no matter how old or in what condition. These hearing aids are then recycled, repaired or refurbished and sent to countries in need by Lions International representatives. The World Health Organisation estimates that 278 million people worldwide have moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears. Yet, current annual production of hearing aids is estimated to meet less than 10% of global need. The poor are especially affected because they are unable to afford the preventative care necessary to avoid hearing loss, or hearing aids to improve their hearing. The Hearing Care Centre, who offer local, private hearing care services in Suffolk, have established well over a dozen donations points across the county, including locally at the Hadleigh Health Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh. If you would like any more information please call 01473 230330 or visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/recycle
Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group It will soon be awards time at the club, but our Chairman Gary Girling has already cause for celebration after winning a Suffolk Cricket OSCA (Outstanding Service to Cricket Award). These are annual awards presented by the ECB and sponsored by NatWest which salute outstanding contributions to local cricket. Gary was nominated for his work co-ordinating the club’s Volunteering event in partnership with the BT Open Reach apprentice scheme – although no one would argue if it was in recognition of his many years of devoted service as the club’s groundsman. This year Gary has worked harder than ever preparing pitches – meeting the challenge not only of a rising number of midweek and weekend matches, but coping with a reduced ground management team. Gary receives an ECB certificate and an invitation to the national OSCA’s ceremony. This has the distinction of taking place in October in the Long Room at Lord’s, meaning a return trip to the Home of Cricket a little more than a year since the club played on the Nursery Ground. Another notable event took place in early August, when the club’s first ever girls match was staged against East Bergholt. This has been the culmination of many months of coaching in schools and at the club by Level 1 coaches Val Gladwell and Jasmin Green, who should be immensely proud of their efforts. This is an exciting part of the club’s plans to provide cricket for all in the community. It promises to be a thrilling finale to the season for the First XI, who remain poised to secure promotion to Division 1 of the Two Counties league. However, they have a difficult run-in, with four of their remaining five games against teams in the top six. They would be in an even stronger position had Brightlingsea not controversially cancelled a recent match, a decision which may be investigated by the league executive. On Sundays little of note has occurred, but that has not stopped Martin Grayling from entertaining readers of the club website with match reports that combine the lyricism of EW Swanton with a Victorian novelist’s eye for landscape. I quote from one recent account of a wind-battered encounter at Brettenham: “A noticeable slope coupled with the tail end of hurricane Katrina ensured those that were unfortunate enough to have to bowl uphill into the excitable breeze found themselves actually slowing down prior to arrival at the crease. This may have been exaggerated by the additional climbing gear needed to reach this altitude and the first set of stumps set up at Base Camp No.1. Perhaps a two-week course in grenade throwing uphill in a wind tunnel might have trained the personnel sufficiently to prove effective. As you can summize, Hadleigh fielded first.” It is almost enough to hang up my own pen in admiration. Don’t forget the music night at the ground on Friday September 2nd, with three live bands providing soul, rock, disco and acoustic sounds. Walk-up tickets at £10 are available, with reduced prices for families, children aged 12-16 and children under 12 free. Rugby Club Summer Activities are Huge Success The Hadleigh Rugby Club season seemed to be endless this year with the Annual Beer Festival being held on the first week-end of July attracting huge crowds from the town who turned up at Layham Road Sports ground to enjoy the live open air music while sampling a pint or two of the twenty beers on display. Following this on August 5th and 6th was the Black Shuk Biker’s Festival where over 350 motorbike enthusiasts camped out on Layham Road. The bikers enjoyed a week-end of music, a quiet pint and compared the wonders of there gleaming machines. They were a credit to the Biking community ensuring that the pitches and the Layham road environment were left as clean and safe as when they arrived. During the week of August 8th 35 of the young rugby players took part in the Summer Rugby School at the club. Organised by Socious Sports, young coaches from New Zealand spent the whole week teaching rugby skills to young enthusiasts from Hadleigh Rugby club in addition to boys from other local clubs. Everyone enjoyed the experiences of the week having learned new skills, a few extra friends, and even how to “dance the Hakka” for their watching parents. Training is now well underway for the senior teams with the season kicking off for them on September 3rd. The youth and junior teams begin their season with a Fun Day from 10.30am on Sunday September 4th where there will be a variety of activities while new members and established players can register with the club.

On Thursday 7th July, Lady Captain Lesley Garnett celebrated her Captain’s Day with ‘A Question of Sport’ theme. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by next year’s Vice Captain, Sue Grieves, on arrival at the Golf Club in a decorated golf buggy. Each member was given a ball marker as a memento of the day before they took part in a team competition, representing their chosen sport. The Gainsborough course was an unusual sight with rugby, tennis, lacrosse, pentathlon, cycling and mountaineering teams all playing golf. Over seventy players took part in the fun event. The chefs at Stoke By Nayland excelled themselves by providing delicious cakes for the players at the half-way stop, after nine holes of play. Lesley was joined by the Club Captain, Gary Chicken, Golf Secretary Adrian Bullock, her husband Peter and other guests for the prize giving and evening meal. Vice Captain, Carol Mehrer, then presented her with a silver necklace as a gift from all the lady members. National Success for Newton Youngsters Three Newton Green youngsters have been making big waves at national level, including brushing shoulders with top international stars. Twelve-year-old Great Cornard school girl Alice Barlow came 11th in the three-round English Girls’ Under 13 Championships held at Mentmore, Bucks. She began the tournament with a handicap of 16, and over the three days shot gross rounds of 86, 79 and 82 – 17 under her handicap – and is likely to be cut to 11.9. More than 50 girls lined up for the tournament and Alice comfortably made the last 18 cut for the final day, being in ninth place after two rounds. Although she slipped to 11th by the end of the day, she finished second in the competition for the best net score. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Jed Seeley, who is at school in Sudbury, and who has cut his handicap in half to eight in the last year, came top of the class in a three-day coaching course at the Lee Westwood Academy in Banbury. He scored 171 points out of 190 in skills tests after being selected for the course by the junior section of the Suffolk Golf Union. He won the top prize of six holes of golf with world number one challenger Westwood, which he will be playing with the super star at a later date. Westwood was at the event and presented Jed with his award, along with a top brand driver and putter, balls and a pair of golf shoes. The third young player making his mark from Newton is 12 handicap teenager Scott Edwards, who won the net prize with a score of 69 in the Ian Poulter Invitation at Woburn. He was selected as a result of being on the Newton shop staff of Tim Cooper, who stocks Poulter equipment, and Scott won a set of custom fitted clubs for his success. The day included 18 holes of golf and a clinic with Poulter in the afternoon.

Hadleigh United Under 13’s After recently completing their signing on, the Hadleigh United under 13’s are keen for the season to begin. They have begun their preseason training, determined to build on their fitness after the summer break. As always, the boy’s commitment was evident with much effort and enthusiasm being shown at training. The boys have several friendly matches leading up to the start of the season but the league matches kick off on Saturday 10th September with Hadleigh Utd at Home to Claydon and Hadleigh Brettsiders at Home to Sporting 87. Kick off for both matches is 10.30 am. All support is most welcome and we will report on the boy’s progress as the season unfolds.
Hadleigh United Under 7’s The new Hadleigh United under 7's started training in March with 18 players all attending on a regular basis under the watchful eye of their coaches Chris Smith, Matthew Norman and Julian Lawrence. The boys now have the experience of playing several matches both home and away including games against Brantham, Wittnesham, Woodbridge and Long Melford to name a few. They are all giving a great account of themselves and are improving quite literally every week with the emphasis being put on fun, enjoyment, and fundamental development with them all taking turns to play in all positions during the games. These games were made even more exciting when the boys received their new kit and we are thankful to our first year sponsors of M Chisnall and Sons for the generous donation along Academy Builders for the sponsorship of the match balls. Also we thank Castons Chartered Surveyors for their generous donation. Our thanks also goes to the ever reliable Merv Bignall for the pitch marking along with Gavin Peters for the help and advice he gave when forming the team. We also would like to thank the Mums on the match day tea stand for all their hard work keeping everyone fed and watered as well as generating some much needed income. By the time this is printed we will have played our last friendlies along with the AFC Sudbury tournament in which most of the other Hadleigh Youth Teams were playing. This will more or less mark the end of the season for the Under 7's with everyone looking forward to starting back in September when they will be playing in the South Suffolk Youth League as Under 8's.
Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd. www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk This years annual match for the Hadleigh Charity Cup saw Leiston provide the opposition for the first time in a contest in aid of Diabetes UK. A classic encounter ended with six goals being shared after Hadleigh had scored twice late on for a deserved share of the spoils. Leiston took the lead after only five minutes and they added a second early in the second half to leave Hadleigh with a mountain to climb. A splendid header from Darren Mills opened Hadleigh’s account but Leiston added a third goal and Hadleigh looked down and out as the minutes began to tick away. Hopes were raised as Danny Allen scored with a header at a time when Hadleigh were dominating the exchanges. With just one minute remaining we got a deserved reward as Daryl Alexander scored with an excellent shot to level the scores. Hadleigh and Leiston will hold the trophy for six months each. The opening league match of the season saw Great Yarmouth at the Millfield and the game ended in a win for Hadleigh by two goals to one as once again we scored in the last minute. We knew we were in for a hard match but just before half time Ollie Canfer scored following a defensive error in the Yarmouth goalmouth. The score remained unchanged until five minutes before the end when the Norfolk side equalised. A draw looked certain but with only seconds remaining Danny Allen fired in Hadleigh’s winning goal to earn three points. The next league match saw Brantham make the short journey to the Millfield for a midweek encounter. Brantham took an early lead from a handball decision leading to a penalty kick. Hadleigh seldom looked capable of equalising and it was no surprise when Brantham added a second goal in the second half after Hadleigh’s defence had made a dreadful mess in dealing with a corner kick. Late in the second period the visitors hit a third goal to inflict a three goal defeat on Haldeigh who ended a well beaten side. Our Reserves have not been idle as they waited for league games to start. Some great results in friendly matches raise hopes for a successful season. The best result saw our Reserves win by ten goals to nil against Achilles. Our Ridgeons Youth team did well to earn a draw at Great Yarmouth in a friendly match. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were, David Everett, Paul Crawford and Bob Talbot.

International Golf Event returns to Stoke by Nayland – and a roller coaster ride for Jamie Moul The international televised European Challenge Tour returned for a second year to Stoke by Nayland this summer. 160 players from around the globe competed over 4 days for the 160,000 euro pot and provided exciting viewing for the crowds, many of whom came to support Stoke by Nayland’s own professional, Jamie Moul. Frenchman Benjamin Hebert Stewart White, Tamara Unwin, completed the most sensational seven days in his professional Tom Williams, Alison Root and Jamie Moul on the 1st tee career by winning his second Challenge Tour event in the space of a week at this “English Challenge” at Stoke by Nayland. The man from Bordeaux provided the perfect followup to his maiden victory in Switzerland during the previous week by taking home the €25,600 first prize on offer after a final round of two under par. Hebert managed to resist the advances of the home hero, Jamie Moul, Welshman Garry Houston and his good friend Rui before making crucial pair of birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to establish a four shot lead and a fairly simple victory march to the clubhouse where he was drenched in Champagne by his fellow countryman when he knocked in the winning putt. It was a pulsating final round with 23 players starting the day within four shots of the lead. The main challengers soon emerged with Jamie Moul making a stunning start in front of a jubilant home crowd. The Englishman birdied four of his first five holes to tie with Hebert Jamie Moul tees off at the English but two cruel double Challenge bogeys quickly followed to end Moul’s valiant final round effort. Jamie had won the European Challenge Tour event in Italy 2 weeks before, and come 2nd in Switzerland, so there were high expectations for him at his home tournament. He had been winning on both the first and second days of the 4 day event, which encouraged more and more spectators to come and support the Stoke by Nayland professional. He finished joint fifth which still gives him a good chance of gaining promotion to The European Tour for next season. The Tour was preceded as usual by a popular Pro Am tournament which included some well-known faces such as BBC Look East’s Stewart White and Tom Williams, as well as DJ Spoony who entertained guests that evening at the Gala Dinner by hosting a celebrity panel discussion. Both BBC Look East and Anglia ITV covered the event and a one hour highlights programme was televised 3 times on Sky Sports the following week which was then distributed out to over 100 countries worldwide.
