900 mile End-to-End Bike Ride A few years ago Jimmy Wilding and Dick Beechener took part in the London Marathon. Having recovered from that they are now planning to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats in June for cancer research. No mean feat, as Jimmy will be 70 and Dick 64 years of age by the time they leap (or maybe clamber) onto their cycles. The pair have been friends for 45 years, during which time Jimmy was Best Man at Dick and Linda’s wedding, and Dick and Linda were godparents to Jimmy and Margaret’s daughter, Kate. Linda and Margaret both worked for a time as dental nurses when Arthur Lee had a practice in Queen Street. Jimmy and Dick both have a strong motivation to support the Cancer Research charity as Margaret was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and thankfully responded to treatment, but sadly, Linda died in September 2006 from ovarian cancer. Jimmy and Dick are therefore trying to raise as much as possible for the charity which funds research into treatment for all forms of the disease. They face quite a challenge, but despite the hard work involving months of training, leading up to cycling 900 miles (and there are a lot of hills between Cornwall and the Scottish mainland’s most northerly point), both
feel it will be fun – and a more than worthwhile fund-raising achievement. There is much to organise yet - the route, a back-up vehicle (in case of breakdown), accommodation, sustenance, fund-raising arrangements and so forth. The immediate need is for a volunteer to coordinate fund-raising; anyone who feels competent to take this on, please speak to Dick or Jimmy as soon as possible. Both will be very grateful for all the help they can get during the preparation and training period – starting now!

A new year brings new resolutions and many of you may have thought about quitting smoking this year. If you have already taken the plunge then good luck and stay motivated. In you are still unsure then read on to convince yourself to quit. Why quit smoking? Giving up smoking is by far the most beneficial thing you can do to add years to your life and life to your years. Approximately 40% of smokers will die from a smoking related condition. All smokers’ health is at risk but even more vulnerable are those with high blood pressure, diabetes, circulation problems, heart disease and lung disease. Giving up smoking because of pregnancy is a great incentive to stop. Medical evidence proves that harm can be done to an unborn child if the mother smokes during pregnancy. The baby receives less oxygen every time the mother smokes, is more likely to be premature or with a lower than average birth weight . Babies of smokers are also more prone to infections. Your quitting smoking can also improve the health of your family and friends as inhaling your second hand smoke makes them more susceptible to smoking related health problems. Children and babies exposed to tobacco smoke are more susceptible to chest , lung and ear infections. They also have three times the risk of lung cancer in later life compared to children living with non-smokers. Quitting can save you money – savings can run into four figures for a heavy smoker. How do I quit Your first port of call should be speaking to a health care professional. This can be your GP or a community pharmacist. At Mill Pharmacy our pharmacists are accredited smoking cessation counsellors and will be able to advise on a variety of products you can use to aid you on your journey. In addition Mill Pharmacy can supply a variety of nicotine replacement products such as patches, gum, inhalators, lozenges etc. on the NHS. Just pop in to speak to Alison or Taj for more information. On behalf of Mill Pharmacy I wish you all a happy and healthy new year.

A traditional nativity is always performed and greatly enjoyed by the children of Kersey CEVCP School. But this year a modern take on this traditional story was right up to the minute in its presentation! The 70 pupils of this village school showed their performing skills when presenting “The X mas Factor” to packed audiences recently. Over 250 proud parents, grand parents and residents of Kersey enjoyed seeing the traditional characters retell the story of the birth of Jesus alongside comical present day personalities. The 70 children aged 4 to 11 performed beautifully rehearsed songs and raps. The plays producers Carolyn Oldfield and Ruby Dee worked very hard this half term to enable the whole school to take part in this amazing production. Belinda Harvey Head teacher said “A truely excellent production of the Nativity is our absolute priority at this time of year. Nothing can be more important in a Church school than ALL the children and the community really focussing on the true meaning of Christmas”

Lin (3rd left) and her helpers with a cheque for £900 for Macmillan Cancer Support There is a danger that annual events can become boring and repetitive. Happily this could never be said about Lin Slaughter’s craft event. When visitors come to her home, where the fair is held, they know there will be lots and lots of beautifully crafted Christmas decorations and gifts that they have never seen before. Lin’s last sale was certainly no exception. Shoppers showed their enthusiasm for her efforts by spending a grand total of £905 . This princely sum also included the proceeds from a raffle and the nominal pound entrance fee for refreshments and a drink. Apart from being a happy shopping experience it has also developed into a sociable gathering as visitors show off their purchases over a cup of coffee and some of Lin’s delicious homemade cakes. The proceeds have gone to Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity close to Lin’s heart.

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, family members and friends who, once again, gave up a precious Sunday afternoon to bring scores of young children into St.Mary's Church for the annual Christingle Service on 5th December. A sum in excess of £400 in total was raised for the Children's Society. I would also like to thank the stewards who ensure safety and orderliness, as well as the Dean for conducting the service and Bob Smith who played the organ. Grateful thanks, too, for the team that prepared the Christingles, the Co-op for donating the oranges and Gloria Powell and her first aid team, who thankfully had no emergencies. Finally, it was good to have with us Andy Pearson from the Children's Society ,who did a wonderful job explaining the Christingle's significance, surrounded by about 50 lively youngsters all keen to answer his questions! Many of you would have heard of the tragic news concerning a much loved member of our community, Rebecca Phillips, who sadly passed away recently. I’m sure countless people will agree that she will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Bec’s family and friends. In her memory we would like to hold a Ladies Night at St Mary’s school, Hadleigh, on 4th February 2011, from 6.30pm until 9.00pm. There will be a number of stalls including The Body Shop, Butterfly Cupcakes, Pampered Chef, Avon, and SnowFlake Jewellery, as well as a raffle and tombola - and that’s just to name a few. You can even expect a little treat from The Body Shop girls who will be giving manicures and facials. There will also be a café open with refreshments available. If you are interested in renting a stall please get in touch on the numbers provided below, or if you are a business that would like to donate any prizes for the raffle or sponsor the event, it really would be going towards a fantastic cause. The money raised will provide the school with some outside seating in memory of Bec, who attended the school when she was a girl, and the remaining money raised will go to the TreeHouse Appeal and CRY (Cardiac Arrest in the Young), which Bec’s family support. As we expect many to attend we are giving you the option to buy tickets before the event at £3.00, although if there are any left you may be able to purchase on the night. Those who pre-pay for tickets will receive a special gift bag and there will be a welcome drink for all. We really hope that the Hadleigh ladies will show their support and come along for some pampering and socialising. Bec thrived on going out and having fun and being with those she loved, so that’s exactly what we aim to do. Please bring your friends along too! Please please support this event! For any further information or to purchase tickets contact Megan on 07540769675 or Michaela on 07791932988. Purchased tickets can be sent or a collection arranged.

Howard at The Christmas Spectacular at Thursford
Approaching 15 years experience with around 500 passes to date
My dear readers, I am penning these words as Hadleigh is in the grip of bitterly cold weather. My footman Frank has ensured that I am swept to my various appointments in commodious four wheel drive transport which makes short work of the snow. Like you, one has to be particularly careful of ice which can be treacherous. Night time at the Gibbons’ residence and as the last flames flicker in the hearth, I run a finger around in the mist on one of the windows in the Drawing Room. I am reassured in the knowledge that all of you are tucked up in bed and thus feel able to retire myself. I make my final preparations and take to my four poster where my miniature dachshunds Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly are awaiting my arrival and we are all cosy until the morning comes. I have mentioned on occasion that I have received in my postbag various cards from two anonymous gin and champagne drinking bears! They have now made themselves known to me; what a delightful wheeze it all was and I am so grateful to all of you for keeping in touch with me. It means a great deal. Christmas was brought alive for me when I joined very many others (and possibly some of you) at the The Christmas Spectacular at Thursford which required two hours of motoring to North Norfolk. Arrangements had been made so that I could partake of refreshments and suitable relief at a hostelry en route. Upon arrival charabancs were all about. I was treated to a Show beyond measure; a cast of hundreds; dancing girls; singers; choirs; a Wurlitzer playing throughout and wonderful music. The stage was enormous and festooned with Christmas trees and decorations as was the steam museum in which the auditorium was created. As Frank drove us back through the highways and byways of several counties, I felt within the warm glow of Christmas. Other VIPs such as Prince William and his fiancée Kate also attended this humdinger of a Show. If you have lived in your house for more than twenty five years, the title is unlikely to be registered at the Land Registry. Ask me to register the title for you and then it can never be mislaid. If your unregistered title deeds are lost then that can spell disaster. Problems arise as the more elderly forget where they have put their deeds. A Happy New Year to you all, Howard Gibbons

Fidelis Finale 2010 Hard to imagine an occasion where an angelic choir of monks and nuns, waddling penguins, and several Charlie Chaplin look-alikes fit comfortably together. The Thursford Christmas Show is one of the few places where this happens quite naturally. These characters, along with a skilful magician, well rehearsed chorus girls and an hilarious ventriloquist, to name a few, combined their awesome talents and entertained the Fidelis group on their recent coach visit to this seasonal spectacle. The show certainly lived up to its traditional high standard of professional performance, colourful costumes, varied music, faultless choreography and entertaining humour. The spectacular finale, the release of several white doves of Peace and a sprinkling of artificial snow, was a fitting way for Fidelis ladies to end their club events for 2010. Only the real snow falling outside was not mentioned in the programme. Jan Devey

Although there will be no respite in the WO2 (AQMS) Jon Asquith, workload, it is hoped that LCpl Dai Phillips, SSgt Ray Neenan the boys were able to tuck and Capt Mark Brennan into a Christmas dinner and open presents from loved ones. The four lads who all live in Hadleigh would like to wish their friends and family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you all in late January.

The King’s Head, Hadleigh was the chosen venue for the Fidelis group’s 6th Christmas supper and what an enjoyable evening it was too. With a record turn out this year the ladies occupied most of the restaurant which was probably just as well for once the party mood took hold, the noise level increased as did the laughter. No coincidence then that some regular drinkers kept their ear muffs on. A delicious two course meal was much appreciated by all. While the ladies finished their seasonal cuisine with coffee and mincepies, Chairwoman, Liz Wilson paved the way for Lin Slaughter to distribute her delightful, hand-crafted Christmas gifts. Amidst considerable applause, Lin was later crowned Craft Queen 2010. Liz then thanked landlord, Mike and all his efficient helpers for their efforts, the club’s committee and members for their continuing support as without this the Club would not flourish. There followed some light-hearted, humorous entertainment and chatter before party goers faced the icy blasts for home. Sincere thanks to the HCN editorial team for publishing the Fidelis reports each month and to the loyal readers who follow our comings and goings. Two Paths diverged in a narrowing wood I am so sorry we could not travel both And be as one good person; So long had I stood To watch you go for as long as I could Until your head disappeared past the dense undergrowth Both paths ahead seemed equal that day Fresh green. no dark foot would dare to tread black I held all my grief for another day As well knowing how way can well lead on to way I thanked God himself , you would never come back

Make it your New Year’s Resolution to have a Hearing Test! So what’s already on your 2011 resolution list? Eat less chocolate? Do more exercise? Give up smoking? If you have a hearing problem, seeking help should be top at the top of your list! Over 70,000 in Suffolk have hearing problems and only a third actually seek professional help for this. “These figures are bad enough in themselves, but when you realise that only a third of people who would benefit from a hearing aid, have one, you begin to see the size of the problem facing the hearing care professionals – and to be brutally honest, the families of those people too”, says Karen Finch, MD of The Hearing Care Centre. “There is plenty of evidence that people with uncorrected hearing loss have a worse quality of life than those with normal hearing, and there is also evidence that untreated deafness can lead to people suffering from serious social or psychological problems,” she said. Karen explained that people with hearing loss tend to get left out of family discussions and decision-making and for many this will have been highlighted over the festive period. There are frequent misunderstandings, relationships can become difficult, marriages strained and the unimpaired partner can suffer stress, fatigue, anger and guilt. Karen’s words of wisdom for 2011 – “It’s time to test your hearing!” To book a hearing test appointment with The Hearing Care Centre, at the Hadleigh Health Centre, call Freephone 0800 096 2637 or visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/hadleigh
Did you recognise this clock? An "Allis Chalmers" clock was shown in the December 2010 HCN. This was once fixed at the entrance to M W Partridge's shop, over the now blocked off door way at the George Street / High Street junction. It was effectively in competition with the church clock and was always the more reliable! The clock was originally a "Massey Harris" clock showing that company's logo. Partridges dealt in Massey Harris tractors and combines and other farm machinery. When Massey Harris became Massey Ferguson in about 1960, my father, who worked at Partridges, changed the wording appropriately. And then later when Allis Chalmers became the preferred source of equipment, he changed it again. It is interesting that the old clock still exists. Nigel Crisp

Kate Edwards, aged 12, from Stoke by Nayland Middle School, who was one of the prize-winning entrepreneurial students of the day at Babergh’s recent youth enterprise event recently put all her learning into action. Hollow Trees Farm, in Semer, offered a prize of an opportunity to work with them to develop a gift box for young people that will sit alongside their current Hamper range. This will require Kate to start from scratch and use all her new-found skills to look at products, design the packaging and logo and work out prices. Hollow Trees Farm will then market the hamper with Kate’s name inscribed on it. Jill Barton, Babergh’s Community Development Officer, said: “This is a great opportunity for Kate to put into practice what she learned at our enterprise event and will give her a real hands-on experience of what working for a company is all about. “Kate will do a full working day and get a real feel for the business. The winning team (George Cox, Uplands Middle School; Charlie Pratt, Great Cornard Middle School; Molly Cracknel,l East Bergholt High School; Samantha Burroughes, All Saints Middle School, Arvin McGuigan, Hadleigh High School and Josh Waite, Great Cornard Upper School) from the enterprise event will also be claiming their prize when they watched Ipswich Town Football Club in their game against Swansea from the luxury of an Executive Directors Box, courtesy of the ITFC Charitable Trust.

Pilates Classes at Hadleigh Town Hall – A New You for A New Year! Leonie Pettitt of Plum Pilates moved to the area from London last May and has since set up a number of classes for all levels in both evenings and daytimes. Whether you have tried pilates previously or are completely new to it, she can offer you fun, friendly, relaxed classes in Hadleigh, Bildeston and the surrounding area. She is also available for 1:1 sessions a your home. Pilates is a wonderful form of exercise that conditions and strengthens both body and mind and is increasingly popular the world over with a wide array of people from professional athletes and pop stars, to new mums looking to get back in shape. We all need to improve our core muscle strength and harness the full range of movement available to our bodies on a regular basis. Otherwise, like a car that sits in a garage for too long, things inevitably start to seize up! Those who practice pilates regularly notice improvements to stamina, muscle tone, flexibility and general wellbeing enabling them to go about daily life with greater strength, ease and confidence. Pilates can also be hugely beneficial to those who are unfortunate enough to have suffered an accident or physical trauma and increasingly recommended by medical professionals to assist with rehabilitation after injury (although always check with your doctor first!). Leonie is a fully qualified instructor with one of the leading organisations in Europe and has had experience of teaching all levels and all ages – from 16 to 86. She cannot wait to share her enthusiasm for this fantastic form of exercise with you! Do please call her on 07930 369017 or email on leonie@plumpilates.com.

RNLI Hadleigh and District Fundraising Committee We are looking for some more active members to join us! If you are a supporter of the RNLI and would like to help us devise, arrange and stage events to raise funds for the lifeboats and their crews, then please telephone Kate on 01473 823570 – Don’t be shy, we need you! DON’T GET CONFUSED however – between us, the Hadleigh and District Fundraising Branch, and the RNLI Regional Headquarters based in Magdalen Road. The RNLI has had a Regional Headquarters in Hadleigh for well over 25 years, from where the RNLI carries out all of the admin of the Region’s 125 Fundraising Branches who help to raise nearly £2M every year, and of the 16 Lifeboat Stations in the Region. Our Fundraising Branch is not based within the Magdalen Road premises. The Branch Committee members do, however, organise all the events to which we try to entice you in order to raise the much needed money to support the RNLI and the volunteer lifeboat crews. The RNLI relies upon voluntary donations and legacies to carry out its life saving work. Please help to support the RNLI by attending our local events, the next of which will be the National SOS Day on 28 January – see our posters for more details. The Fundraising Branches form the backbone of the Lifeboat Service and, with your help, we can continue to help save lives at sea.

The term has flown by! Life at St Mary’s has been very busy and lots of fun! Thank you to all the children and parents who represented St Mary’s at the Hadleigh Lighting Up Ceremony and Winter Festival. Well done for surviving the icy weather! There was a superb turn out and we were delighted to sing carols with the Elmsett Brass Band. Thank you to the Hadleigh Entertainment Committee for organising such a fun event. The children have had a great time at their Christmas parties and festive lunch! They enjoyed a variety of party games and festive activities. Every child made a hat for the Christmas lunch. There were elf hats, holly hats, hats with Christmas messages in different languages and many other wonderful creations! Thanks to the kitchen staff for our delicious turkey dinner! Thank you to all the parents, staff and Year 6 pupils who made the Christmas Fair such a success. All the activities, including the secret giftwrapping room, raffle, tombola, refreshments and the games, helped to raise over £950! Santa’s Grotto was really popular! The children sang carols to entertain the parents – all the carol practices were worthwhile! We also sang our carols at St Mary’s Church for our annual Carol service. Well done to all the children who did the readings for us. The children enjoyed an hour’s entertainment with Marcel the Magician shortly before the end of term. Marcel returned later to DJ at the Christmas disco. The children had a super time and behaved brilliantly! They were kept very active and entertained by our expert DJ! All the children in the Early Years and Key Stage 1 participated in the Nativity production. Congratulations to the children on their loud voices and wonderful singing and dancing. There were some Oscar winning performances and the costumes were fantastic. We were delighted to see so many parents and grandparents watching the children – it was a really special event! Thanks to everyone who contributed to the collection to support sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease. We collected over £200. In between Christmas activities, we managed to fit in the Celebration Assemblies, which were attended by lots of parents. Children received awards, trophies and certificates for their achievements in and out of school. We celebrated all sorts of achievements from karate trophies to maths challenges. Well done to all the children in the school – you have all worked hard and accomplished a lot! It was lovely to see pre-school children and their parents and the children from Hadleigh Community Playgroup at our Christmas Craft Afternoon in the Nursery. Thanks to the Playgroup staff for coming along and joining in the fun! After Christmas, we welcome a new teacher, Mrs Wadsworth, to the School. As our numbers have increased we have had to create a new class for Year 1 children. Mrs Wadsworth has visited the school a number of times and has enjoyed working with the children on craft activities. We wish her lots of luck for next term!

New 24-Hour St Elizabeth Hospice Helpline Launched A ground-breaking new 24-hour phoneline offering specialist advice direct to the Hadleigh community has been launched by St Elizabeth Hospice. St Elizabeth Hospice OneCall is for anyone in East Suffolk who wants help with issues on palliative and supportive care, including those living in the Hadleigh area. Members of the public, patients, relatives, carers, GPs, nurses and other medical professionals, health and social care workers can get expert advice at the end of the phone – even in the middle of the night. It is staffed by registered nurses who will give callers direct access to a range of advice and support seven days a week. There is just one number to ring - 0800 567 0111 - and calls are free from a BT landline. Jane Loughlin, St Elizabeth Hospice’s chief executive, said: “When in the midst of difficult times such as coping with an illness or caring for a lovedone, it is important all members of the community have quick and easy access to appropriate support and the correct facts. “Having one phone number for anyone who wants advice or information about our Hospice and palliative care issues will help us to reach out to the whole community. Whether it be a patient facing a new symptom, a carer worried about giving the correct dosage of pain relief or a doctor with a query, OneCall is there to support everyone.” There are similar phonelines aimed at health and social care workers, but OneCall breaks new ground by reaching out to the public as well.

As theatre visits are popular fixtures on the Fidelis calendar when the retired actress Elizabeth Norman brought her touch of drama to the group just recently it was exceptionally well received. Playing to a full audience and often with their involvement, Elizabeth delighted everyone with her (L to R) Elizabeth Norman, theatrical anecdotes from Rita Johnson, Frances Tebbutt her time as an understudy, with Tinkerbell’s Home. stage manager and actress. Using several treasured items of her memorabilia, the ladies heard about her opportunity not only to step into Nyree Dawn Porter’s stage shoes and play Peter Pan but also to wear Dorothy Tutin’s Peter Pan costume at the same time. The room fell silent as Elizabeth performed a touching extract from the same Panto. Her family’s long standing connection with the stage was clearly supported by a very dated black and white photo of her aunt behind the scenes as a technician. A humorous monologue about the life of an understudy and a poem addressing an irritating woman in the audience were professionally performed and much enjoyed. Seasonal refreshments including mulled wine were also well received on a particularly cold winter’s night.

On the 20th October 2010 my brother came to the house with a dead Barn Owl that he had found near the Kersey Vale footpath sign beside the A1071. Apart from a broken left leg the owl was in a clean condition and freshly dead. So was probably killed by a car early that morning. The right leg had a BTO ring on it which read GC92734, this was reported with ring details to the BTO at Thetford, Norfolk. Four weeks later the details came back to us about the barn owl. The owl was ringed by Suffolk Barn Owl Group on 30th July 2010 at Barn Owl drawn by Jerry Burstall, Suffolk. It was a nestling around 1989 and female. It was found 84 days after it was ringed, 10km from the ringing site in a west south west direction. How many barn owls will die of starvation during the very cold weather in November and December? The cold weather have forced Meadow Pipits to bird feeders in some gardens and there have been Bramblings seen with Chaffinch in gardens as well. 20 plus Brambling were feeding in sunflower crop near Hollowtrees Farm during November. Skylark the only flock of note was of 200 plus in oil seed rape at the top of Tower Mill Lane on 3rd December. Little Egret, 3 were in Kersey Brook at the Vale End of the brook, how these birds survive such cold conditions is amazing. If the frozen conditions last many weeks then Little Egrets will perish. Keep a look out for Waxwings, as yet only one bird seen near Lister Road, Hadleigh on 19th December. Jerry Oxford

Rotary Review END POLIO NOW CAMPAIGN: For almost 30years the World Heaalth Organisation in partnership with Rotary International has been struggling to free the world of polio and at last the battle is nearly won. Virtually everywhere is clear of the wild polio virus including countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Congo where war has not even impeded success. The remaining problem areas are India, Pakistan and Nigeria and even there the number of new cases in the past year only amount to a few hundred. However considerable funding is still required and Rotary is raising further money during January and February to ensure that the final vaccinations programmes may be carried out. There is an added incentive with the Bill Gates Foundation promising to match any monies raised by Rotary. Be part of this wonderful programme bygiving generously wherever you see a Rotary End Polio Now collecting box in and around Hadleigh during these two months. You will find boxes in M W Partridge, Hadleigh Health Centre Pharmacy and HollowTrees Farm Shop during 1st week in January and more boxes should appear later. It only takes £1 to protect 5 children!! CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: At the time of writing the collection has started well with the floaat and Father Christmas visiting Malyon Road and Oxford Drive but it appears that the heavy snow will severely disrupt the other collections. If this does happen we will make every effort to be in the usual place in the High Street on Christmas Eve. CLUB EVENTS: Snowy weather caused the cancellation of the Special General Meeting to elect next years officers and this will now be held in early January. However the Christmas Party did take place the following week in the Town Hall and members and partners enjoyed an excellent traditional dinner prepared by Splinters. SPEAKERS: 1 Steve Munns from the District Foundation Committee travelled from Diss to bring members up to date with Foundation matters. With the aid of a powerpoint presentation he quickly outlined the history explaining that Rotary Foundation started in 1917 with a donation of $26 and has grown into the largest charity in the world. Its programmes are wide ranging and include Grants to Clubs to help with humane and educational projects both at home and abroad in the third world covering poverty, farming, water provision, schools and health. It also organises exchanges of young business people to learn more about business in each others countries whilst there are also scholarships allowing young people to study at an overseeas university whilst also acting as an ambassador for Rotary. The Foundation also sponsors University degree courses in Peace studies and graduates have been involved in all the areas of conflict around the world including Iraq and Afghanistan. Foundation is also responsible for the END POLIO NOW campaign mentioned earlier and you may be assured that all monies given go to the charitable cause and not to overheads and expenses. 2 Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre Ltd and member of Ipswich East Rotary Club, used powerpoint facilities to explain the working of the ear and the inevitable gradual loss of hearing during ones lifetime. She discussed the various hearing aids available including the latest digital models. Her Company offers a complete haering service with extensive testing before any recommendations are made. Appointments at the Hearing Centre in Hadleigh may be made through the GP, Hospital or personally. Consultations are by appointment only although there are open days twice a year which are well advertised. Winter in Hadleigh Sixty-three years Ago The present winter weather has been quite severe, and many older residents might recall the harsh winter of 1947 during the post-war years of austerity. Private car ownership was then still low but keeping the local roads open was important then as now. The Surveyor for the Hadleigh Urban District Council compiled a report for the Chairman and Members of the Highways Committee at their meeting held on 10th April 1947. The following is an extract from his report. “Since your last meeting considerable work of snow clearing has been necessary. When it was snowing more or less every day there was not much object in moving it except where it had drifted and temporally blocked roads. On the 5th and 6th March however roads became blocked and there was so much snow on the sides of the main streets that it was necessary to move some of it. Although there was only single line traffic on Wolves Wood Road for some days this was the only class 1 road which was completely blocked for a few hours one morning. All other class 1 and 11 were just passable. Ivy Tree Lane and Hollow Lane were completely blocked for traffic for a few days, and Wolves Farm Lane was also blocked for a short time. The public as a whole accepted the position very well and realised that we were doing all that was possible to keep the roads open. On some roads drifts formed almost as fast as they were cleared and this often happened when it was not snowing owing to the strong easterly winds. Farmers helped considerably by letting me have men to clear the roads. This of course, will be a charge on the roads but the labour was appreciated. During the whole period of about two months I estimate the cost of snow clearing, gravelling roads etc. to be about £500. A certain amount of damage was done to the roads by flood water and frost during the gale on the night of the 16th March, trees were blown down, temporally blocking Hadleigh Heath Road, Layham Road, Aldham Mill and Cork's Lane, and one at Hintlesham affecting Wolves Wood Road.” Do you remember that winter sixty-three years ago in Hadleigh? Lindsay Elizabeth Panton, 1948-2010 Graham, Chris, Ian and Josh would like to thank all of you who sent their condolences and all who joined them in St Mary’s Church in celebration of Lindsay’s life. Best of all, from all those messages Lindsay received since the diagnosis on October 1st she got to know just how much her love was returned, many times over. In the short time left to her she drew great strength and comfort from that. It has been humbling and uplifting to read the many tributes. “Fun”,”lovely”, and “humour” are recurring themes, which is just as we remember her, right up to the end. She was able to endure that period because of the superb support she got, showing the NHS at its best. Ipswich Hospital Somersham Ward, Macmillan Nurses, the Hadleigh Health Centre with the District Nurses, all worked together to solve any problem and maintain her quality of life. She was especially grateful for her stay in the St Elizabeth Hospice to recover from the brief course of chemotherapy. Thank you, all.

The annual Eight Bells Golf Day once again held at The Brett Vale Golf Club where pub regulars and guests teamed up with members of The Badgers Golf Society to raise funds for The East Anglian Air Ambulance. The course was in superb condition and favourable weather helped produce some excellent returns. After the golf, participants and guests enjoyed an excellent dinner at the pub, where the Eight Bells Shield was presented to the winner, Keith Turner, who scored 44 points off a handicap of 15. In play competitions were won by Barry Maine (longest drive) and Brian Locksmith (nearest the pin). Monetary donations from DHL (Argos) drivers and staff, plus additional contributions from participants of both cash and prizes, raised just over ÂŁ300.00. This was subsequently matched by the DHL Foundation through their “match itâ€? scheme which is open to all DHL employees. I would like to extend my personal thanks to the proprietors and staff of The Eight Bells, Brett Vale Golf Club and all those contributed so generously. Keith Game

News from The Station Hello readers, and a very warm welcome to 2011 from all of us at Hadleigh Police Station! I hope that you all had a salubrious Christmas and New Year, and have arrived safely into January. The festive period was busy for us as usual, and at the time of writing we are all currently dealing with the extreme weather conditions and the snow. The cold snap has not deterred many brave souls from venturing out into the open, and I am pleased to say that we had a very productive trip to Hollow Tress far shop in Semer on Monday 20th December. PCSO’s Amanda Coleman and Julia Bignell came along with me to give out crime reduction advice, tips on how to look after yourself in the winter, and leaflets and merchandise like key rings and purse bells to protect your personal property. Aside from public engagements, we have continued to look at the various anti-social behaviour problems that we are experiencing in Hadleigh. We have been exercising our powers under section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 on a regular basis. This allows us to disperse individuals for up to 48hours from areas where we feel there is a likelihood of alcohol related disorder at some point. If people return within the allocated timeframe they will be arrested. So far, we have only had to prosecute one person for a breach. We have also had a positive reaction with many parents when we speak to them having confiscated alcohol from their young teenage children. It is an offence under section 30 of the Policing and Crime Act 2009 for persons under 18 to persistently possess alcohol in public. Three times in 12 months leads to a prosecution, and parents are now being forced to take a closer look at what their offspring are doing when out socialising. I would also like to mention that the ongoing investigation and planning into the Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) for Hadleigh is drawing to a close, and fingers crossed we will have this tool to use in the New Year to then prevent adults drinking irresponsibly in publicComplaints into dog fowling on our streets continue to grow, and we do have a limited supply of dog bags at the Police Station if you would like some. If you have a dog, then take responsibility for them and clear up after them – bag it and bin it! I continue to implore people to re-educate friends and families over the use of single yellow lines. This is a subject that we always talk about, but a single yellow line means that you cannot park there between stated hours. In our High Street, it is 8am – 6pm Monday to Saturday. This is not a quirk of Hadleigh, it is relevant to every single yellow line in the Country, and always has been. Remember, whilst we are dealing with inconsiderate drivers who abuse the lines, we are not “dealing with real criminals”. Please refrain from this practice; we will give you a £30 ticket! Our next Neighbourhood Panel meeting will be held at Pinewood Baptist Church on Wednesday 19 January starting at 1930 hours. You can also come and see Julia and me every third Monday at the entrance of Buyright between 1230pm and 2pm. The next one is Monday 10th January. Finally, the eagle eyed of you will now know that the Police Station opening hours has changed. Whilst the Town is Policed 24hours a day, 7 days a week, we only have a station clerk on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 1pm and 3pm. Until next time, Matt, PC 1455 Paisley Matthew.paisley@suffolk.pnn.police.uk

Another year has come to an end at Home-Start Babergh, thanks to a wonderful retired volunteer who raised in excess of £600 at her recent birthday party, staff at Home-Start Babergh were able to hold a fantastic Families’ Christmas party at the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard. The children were entertained by Smile it’s a Party, who provided a splendid puppet show and also brought Father Christmas along to deliver some early Christmas presents. Due to the generosity of both our retired volunteer, a donation from a local book supplier and a grant from the Sudbury Community Cluster all children received two presents and were able to enjoy some festive party food. Sudbury Churches Together once again donated hampers to some of our more needy families. These were topped up with some luxury items from the remainder of the donation for the Christmas party. Despite the current economic climate so many people and organisations have been extremely generous towards our charity. Councillor Grutchfield recently purchased a laptop and mobile phones from his locality budget for the schemes’ emergency procedures, following recommendations from the recent quality assurance review. On behalf of all the staff, directors and volunteers I would like to thank all our supporters and wish you all a very Happy New Year. As we look forward to 2011, preparations are now well under way for our forthcoming new volunteer training course which begins on Friday March 4th. The course runs each Friday up until Friday 27th May (excluding holidays) from 10am – 2pm. Hadleigh Tennis Club is 100 Years Old! 2011 is the centenary year for Hadleigh Tennis Club. The committee is looking at various proposals with a view to celebrating this important anniversary during the year. These and other matters are to be discussed at the AGM on the 17th January in the Community Room at the Ansell centre. The Committee would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members and friends, (past and present), for helping us to achieve this milestone and if anyone would like to sponsor or support any of our events, please contact us via email at: hadleightennisclub@googlemail.com The tail-end of 2010 has been fairly busy for the club, with new lights being installed to replace our old ones, which means that we can now look forward to some “brighter” evening play. This on top of the court resurfacing that took place the year before means that our courts will provide good playing conditions over the next years as we start our second century! Thanks to everyone who helped with these ventures. The Men’s and Ladies’ singles tournament was held towards the end of October, (later than usual due to bad weather). Nevertheless, as usual the matches were well contested with Jonathon Chown winning the men’s and Sandy Claireaux the Ladies’ titles this year. Well done to both of them! Our membership continues to grow, but we are always looking for more players, so if you fancy starting, or re-starting an old sport why not come along to meet us? We are there on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 and Sunday mornings from 9.30. We did have one prospective guest player drop in recently, (just after the last snow fall). A rather portly gentleman he was, but we had to turn him away on this occasion as the snow made the courts unplayable. We advised that whilst his presents would always be welcome in Hadleigh, he would need to park his rather large sleigh outside the courts next time. Our coach also suggested that he might like to go a little easy on the mince pies and brandy this year. Ho-Ho!! Well that’s about it for now, the committee would like to thank all of our members and Team Captain’s for their support during 2010 as we look forward to starting another 100 years with the club. Keep an eye on our website: www.hadleightennis.org.uk, twitter and local news, for details of centenary events during 2011. Happy New Year!

Letter from Layham Parish Council Elections The present Parish Council dissolves after the April meeting of 2011 and new Council is elected in May. In 2007, an election was not necessary, as only five prospective councillors were nominated. These five, therefore, took up their positions unopposed. As seven councillors are needed for a full council two further members were co-opted. If you are interested in serving your community by becoming a parish councillor then watch out for the publicity that will fall through your letter box next month. The next four years will be an interesting time as, with the huge changes at County Council level and the possible amalgamation of Babergh and Mid-Suffolk district councils, there may be opportunities for parish councils to take on more responsibilities – either alone, or in partnership with other neighbouring councils. If you know already that you are interested then contact the Clerk to the Council, Louise Allen on louise@allenbs.co.uk or 01473 827812
Dog walking on footpaths A reminder that, when you use the footpaths in the parish, dogs should be kept under control at all times. In particular, a dog should be on a lead when passing through a farmyard or when on land where animals are kept or game birds are raised. Thank you.
The ‘Big Society’ at work in Layham What a pleasure to find a group of volunteers working in the snow on the Sunday before Christmas to make life easier and safer for the rest of the community in Upper Layham. Kate Liggett, Jonathan Woods, Ron Gunn, Jonathan Oldham and Simon Gibbs deserve our thanks.
Pollarded willows There has been a big change to the landscape around the mill pond. Several large willows have been pollarded right down to the tops of their main trunks. This looks fairly drastic but is the normal way to manage a tree of this type. You may be surprised at how much re-growth there will be in the spring and summer of 2011. Traditionally trees were pollarded either to provide fodder for livestock or for their timber. Fodder pollards produced a great deal of leaf; they were pruned at intervals of 2-6 years so that their leafy material would be most abundant. Wood pollards were pruned at longer intervals of 8-15 years, a pruning cycle that tended to produces upright poles favored for such uses as fence rails and posts or for light building. An important use for coppiced wood was as fuel and many a cottage fireplace would have been filled with the trimmings from tree management. One consequence of pollarding is that pollarded trees tend to live longer because they do not bear the weight of a tree left to grow naturally.
Visiting waxwings Thousands of waxwings have flown across the North Sea in recent weeks. They come from the forests of Scandanavia and Siberia in search of the red berries on trees and bushes such as rowan, whitebeam and hawthorn. This happens when food is in short supply in their natural habitats. Watch out for these pinkish-brown crested birds about the size of starlings. Doreen Sillett, one of several keen birdwatchers in Layham, has seen them on Mill Lane in Layham and sent us this photograph.
Lecture by Mark Mitchels PLEASE DO NOT TAKE SAND FROM THE SMALL CONTAINER FOR USE ELSEWHERE. It is provided to make that stretch of road safe and is will not last long if taken to other places. Thank you. If there is a case to be made for a bin of grit to be provided in another place in the village then bring it to the attention of the Parish Council

Layham Playgroup ‘Layham’s Christmas Cracker!’ Wow what a day!!! After months of meticulous planning the day of the eagerly awaited Christmas Craft & Gift Fair finally arrived & what a brilliant day it was. After a frantic late night & early morning completing final preparations, the army of Layham helpers ably supported by there Kersey allies, braced themselves for the onslaught of excited festive visitors, & boy did they come!!! The Ansell Centre literally buzzed with excitement as eager shoppers took in the delights of the myriad of stalls on offer, sampled wonderful food & sustained themselves at the in-house café. As ever the cake stall was a ‘honey pot’ of interest as Layhams reputation for wonderful home baking was admirably upheld, who does make that gorgeous moist rich fruit cake!!?? However competition was ‘hot’ with the outdoor food tent being an equally powerful draw, selling fantastic, warming homemade soups, mulled wine & hot dogs. An innovation this year was the expansion of the extravaganza into the adjacent Community Room, where childrens crafts, refreshments, childrens toy tombola & the visually enticing ‘jar bola’ provided entertainment for the younger visitor & not to forget Santa’s Grotto!!! Sitting expectantly in his grotto at the end of the ‘snow tunnel, Santa took a full day out from his busy schedule to greet the wonderful children of Layham & Hadleigh. Over 110 children visited Santa during the day, who looked very comfortable warming himself by the stunning fire place. Sheltering from the Arctic chill, Santa took time to speak to every visitor personally, discussing their expectations for the festive season. Such an event cannot be put on without a great deal of help & planning, & the money raised to help the children of Layham Playgroup & Kersey School was truly breathtaking. Rest assured it will be very carefully spent for their direct benefit. There are so many people to thank for what was a stupendous effort, but particular mention should go to ‘Wonder Shirley’ who masterminded the whole adventure. Sue Ryder support people with Dementia Opened in November 2009, The Stables Dementia Day Service at Sue Ryder – The Chantry on Hadleigh Road supports people to live well with dementia. Through a range of relaxed group and one to one activities including music, reminiscence, exercise, alternative therapies and domestic activities such as cooking – a trained team of staff experienced in supporting people with dementia help attendees maintain abilities and basic skills that support independence and quality of life. Jo Marshall, care centre manager at Sue Ryder – The Chantry, said: “Dementia still has a great deal of stigma associated with it; the condition is misunderstood and often not diagnosed quickly enough, leaving individuals with the condition, their families and carers in difficult circumstances. “Through personalised activities and bespoke care in a safe and secure environment, we aim to support people living with dementia to maintain everyday skills for as long as possible. And, whilst people are in our care, family members can experience some respite to recharge their batteries or carry out activities they previously may have struggled to find time to do. The Chantry has recently been hosting a series of very popular, free-toattend, Taster Thursday sessions offering attendees the opportunity to find out more about the Stables service and whether or not it is right for them. People can access Sue Ryder – ‘The Stables’ Dementia Day Service which includes support to people aged below 65 years old by contacting the centre directly. For more information call Tracey Plested, community and day services manager on 01473 295 200 or email tracey.plested@suerydercare.org. New Gym equipment installed For many people the luxury of a gym subscription is out of the question and for many people with other commitments fitting in exercise has to be convenient, flexible and fun. Some of our most popular sports such as football, netball, jogging etc take place outdoors, despite the great British weather, so why not gym exercise? On Friday 10th December 2010 the new outdoor gym equipment installed at Corks Lane Playground, Hadleigh was officially opened at a ceremony attended by Jan Byrne, the Town Mayor, Chris Marsh from Hadleigh Leisure Centre, the Town Clerk, Services Officer and several of the Town Councillors. Purchased with the kind provision of S106 monies from Babergh District Council the outdoor gym comprises equipment for everyone to use at any time of the day and at no cost. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. At the moment the equipment comprises a Ski Machine to improve muscle stamina and heart and lung function and a Combi Chest Press and Lateral Pull Down machine. The Chest Press will improve muscle tone in arms, triceps and chest and The Lateral Press will improve muscle tone of the back and arms. All the equipment is easy to use and there are simple to follow instructions on each piece of equipment. The Town Council are pleased to see that the equipment is already well-used and if the project is successful and gains a significant amount of use, the Town Council may well look at adding to the outdoor gym equipment in the future.

Black Cat Newsletter 2010 proved to be a full year for us and we had a lot of variation in our events and speakers, some were fun, others interesting and a few gave us serious food for thought. We had a great night at the theatre a treasure hunt and even a slide show on New Zealand. On a more serious note we had a talk from the East Anglia’s Children Hospices Treehouse Appeal, a talk on Parkinson’s Disease and its affect on both sufferers and carers and we met some young people raising funds for the young men and women in Afghanistan. Our year finished with a Christmas meal and party. As you will note we are fortunate that our committee members do their utmost to ensure every meeting has something for everyone to enjoy. On behalf of all at the Black Cat Club we would like to wish everyone a truly Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year and look forward to meeting new members in 2011

Laurels and Donkeys Compelling, simple & mysterious' Sean O'Brien Sunday Times 'His voice is unlike any other' Lavinia Greenlaw New Statesman & Society 'Motion is a beautiful lyricist unpretentiously and precisely describing those things worth having even as he casts unsettling shadows across them' Robert Potts The Guardian Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate (1999-09), introduces his latest book Laurels and Donkeys (Clutag Press), a collection of war poems presenting scenes from various conflicts of the 20th & 21st centuries - from the First World War to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They provoke both shock at what Wilfred Owen called 'the pity of war' and dismay at its recurrence. Some are elegies, some are satires and some are memories of the poet's father, who fought in the Second World War. Several rely on the words & witness of soldiers (in other words, they are varieties of 'found' poem) while others derive from newspaper articles and interviews. Over half the book’s proceeds go to The Royal Marines’ Recovery – Rehabilitation – Reintegration charity. Sir Andrew also reads from The Cinder Path (Faber) shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry, his collection of essays Ways of Life: On Places, Painters and Poets, his autobiography In The Blood - A Memoir of My Childhood and answers questions about his writing and the role of Poet Laureate. Andrew Motion’s poetry has received the Arvon/Observer Prize, the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize. He is Professor of Creative Writing at Royal Holloway and co-founded The Poetry Archive. Andrew Motion was knighted for his services to literature in 2009. His next book is a sequel to Treasure Island. Andrew Motion - Laurels and Donkeys at The New Wolsley Theatre, Ipswich on Friday 4th March '11 at 7.30pm
Babergh and Mid Suffolk agree to single Chief Executive Plans by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils to bring together their staffing structures in order to make savings, received a boost during the last week with the proposal to recruit a single new chief executive being passed by both authorities. The recruitment process for a single chief executive will commence in January 2011. The chief executive will be responsible for the integration of services and the possible creation of a new single council, if the public support this and other criteria are met to satisfy the Secretary of State. Cllr Tim Passmore, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council said: "Both councils have substantial savings to make, whilst continuing to deliver high quality services to our local communities, and to achieve these we need to assemble a single management team, under a single chief executive, as soon as possible. This bold and decisive decision will move the integration process forward which is being viewed positively by Government and from what we hear, many Council Taxpayers." Cllr Nick Ridley, Chairman of Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee said: “This is good news for residents, staff and others as it removes another layer of uncertainty as to what the future holds. The decision by both sets of councillors to give immediate clarity as to the process and direction of forming a new single management team is an important step in achieving these very desirable outcomes”. The decision to achieve financial savings by creating a single staffing structure across Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils will go ahead whether or not the two councils are abolished and replaced by a new single council covering central and south Suffolk. A final decision to make even greater savings by abolishing both councils and creating a new single district council will be dependent on a number of issues, including the outcome of a local poll in 2011 of all local government electors in the two districts, an electoral and boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England and the Secretary of State's decision during next year. 30

Film Review with Mat Lucas
Monsters (12A, 94mins, Gareth Edwards) It is always intriguing when small, low budget films upset blockbusters at the box office, with critics and with audiences. We’ve seen it a few times recently, most notably with the last two instalments of Paranormal Activity, with both films outperforming Lionsgate’s Saw 6 and Saw 3D. This time it’s the turn of the sci-fi film, and more specifically the alien invasion film. In mid November Universal Studios released the multi-million dollar movie Skyline. Whilst this film attracted very little critical appraisal, it easily made back the money for its producers. With an estimated production budget of 10-20 million USD, the film has managed to make almost $50 million worldwide. So now is the turn of the low budget film. In a genre where, in today’s cinema, visual effects are a given, a low budget film may struggle to make its mark. For Monsters, however, there is no such problem. Monsters follows Sam (Whitney Able) and Andrew (Scoot McNairy) as they travel through Mexico in an attempt to return to the United States. The only problem is that there is an Infected Zone between themselves and home. The film gives the audience a number of angles to see the situation from, which is a breath of fresh air. Another breath of fresh air comes from the amount of restraint that director Gareth Edwards shows in the revealing of his aliens. Although they do clock up a good amount of screen time, this builds throughout the film and means there is always some tension. Usually there are just noises and sounds to be heard, which is just as scary. The on-location filming gives an amazing backdrop for the ‘home’ of the aliens. It is so impressive that virtually nothing can be spent of a location yet the atmosphere can top that of anything created with use of a set or blue screen. Skyline is not a bad film, in fact it shows amazing visuals and combines that with a fairly decent plot. But Monsters is driven by its surreal story, which allows everything else just to fall into place, and it does so amazingly. Personal judgement: A believable plot, fantastic shot selection, cleverly used sound and realistic characterisation makes Monsters the best alien invasion film of the year, and leaves Skyline somewhat out in the cold. Rating: 4/5

Headteacher’s introduction Enrichment and learning As many of you will be aware, we offer our pupils many opportunities to work and learn in a variety of ways. To enhance pupils’ learning we offer a comprehensive enrichment programme. This involves one day in the Autumn Term, a second day in the Spring Term and a fortnight in the Summer Term. These opportunities allow pupils to hone and further develop their social, personal, learning and thinking skills. During Enrichment pupils are challenged to work with a range of other pupils to solve problems and develop ideas. They have to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability as well as resilience – skills highly valued by employers. There are also opportunities to participate in trips and visits which will enhance pupils’ understanding of different subjects across the curriculum. On Wednesday 10th November all our pupils participated in our Autumn Enrichment Day. We had visitors working with pupils from the army working on problem solving, a visit to Colchester Zoo, Film making, a theatre trip and workshop linked to the West End hit ‘Wicked’, Outdoor Challenges and a Walking Trip in London just to name a few of the opportunities offered. In the future, we will be encouraging pupils to be involved in constructing and designing enrichment activities to develop their leadership and independent learning skills.
Enrichment Day at Hadleigh High Wednesday 10th November was Enrichment Day at Hadleigh High. Year 7 divided in half for their activities. 7H, 7A and 7D enjoyed a Languages’ Day.

They had a visitor from India and China and were given an introduction into their cultures as well as learning about Russian culture. They had the chance to practise a few phrases in the different languages and also to study English and how sentences are formed. To finish the day, they had to create their own language and presented it to the class. Meanwhile, 7L, 7E and 7I spent the day looking at Biodiversity and how we as a school could create an environment that encourages and supports local insects and butterflies. The students were given the task of taking the small courtyard in the English Area and designing such a habitat which will be created next spring. The day was split into 3 sessions, in which each form had a chance to research indigenous butterflies and insects in the area, and the plants that are needed to support them. In the other sessions, they were given the opportunity to draw up their design for the new courtyard habitat, as well as designing a class mosaic mural to be hung in the area. During their research the students were surprised to learn how complex biodiversity is and the impact on nature when the delicate balance of wildlife, plant life and environment is disturbed. They were also surprised by the rate in which butterflies are in decline and became extremely enthusiastic about helping to address this through the creation of a habitat designed for their needs. Year 8 were offered the opportunity to take part in a Design and Technology Day, ‘Animal Magic’. They spent the day working in all four areas of Design and Technology; Food, Textiles, Graphic Products and Resistant Materials. The aim for the day was to create an animal support pack for a wildlife centre. Each student made a gift bag to advertise all of the products they produced, all with the same theme. To go in their gift bag, they made a money box, a finger puppet and animal shaped biscuits. Everyone that took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves and liked the theme of animals. The day was a great success and the staff looks forward to organising this activity on the next Enrichment Day in the spring. The other half of the year spent a fun filled day at Colchester Zoo which gave the students the opportunity to meet all of the animals there and have an interesting and informative time with friends. Year 9 spent the day looking at different occupations, options and choices and they thought about the impact of choices we make on our lives and lifestyles. This started to bring about an appreciation of the wide variety of occupations available, as well as working conditions and pay. They also developed skills relating to the work place, money management, budgeting, saving and spending. Year nine thoroughly enjoyed this useful activity, and the teachers were glad it was of use to them. Students in the upper school were able to choose from a range of options. Some students went to see the London performance of Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Before attending the show, students took part in a workshop which focused on the main characters and themes of the production including the relationships between characters. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and from what they saw from the performance, it was an outstanding theatrical display. Another group of Year 10 and 11 students visited the Tate Modern. They had a great time viewing the artwork and even had the opportunity to enter a portrait competition where all of the portraits will be shown in Buckingham Palace, the Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee! Students are still currently working on the portraits and are excited for the end result. Mr Brimstead, one of the members of staff on the trip, stated, “The students were a pleasure to take and completed the tasks to a high standard.” A number of Year 10 students chose to stay in school and take part in a peer mentoring training day. Students from East Bergholt came to Hadleigh High School to teach the students how to deal with younger children and how to sort the problems they might have. Consequently, students had to gain their
trust in each other; this included a series of trust activities to improve their confidence. These new peer mentors will help around the school and will use their newly developed skills to assist those who need a friend. Some students from Years 10 and 11 opted for something a little more physical. They were given the chance to take part in a Personal Development Activity day, run by members of the Combat Army Recruiting Team. The aim of the day was to enhance communication skills, to build up their problem solving skills and to boost their confidence in teamwork activities, which the students did by taking part in four leadership activities. As well as this it gave the pupils an awareness of the responsibilities of the Soldiers. Students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and said that it was a successful day! Despite the necessity of an early start, 40 Year 10s and 11s chose to go down to London for a day of walking and sight-seeing. Mrs Drury acted as a tour guide on the coach pointing out various landmarks for them - a role she seemed very comfortable with! First stop was Buckingham Palace. They headed up the Mall to see the guards and their horses on the way to Horse Guard’s Parade. Next stop was Trafalgar Square where a number of the pupils clambered onto Nelson's Column for some more photos. Then they had a whistle-stop tour of Whitehall and Parliament Square - this was a very speedy part of their walk due to the protest taking place across the road. Once they had crossed the river at the Houses of Parliament they then headed along the Embankment where the students posed for photos with Mickey Mouse before having a freezing riverside picnic. Afterwards they took a trip to the Tate Modern to look at the sunflower seeds, before heading over the Millennium Bridge and to St Pauls. The coach then took them to the Tower of London where they spent the rest of the afternoon, seeing the Crown Jewels, 400 year old graffiti from prisoners in the tower and various torture devices. It was a really enjoyable trip and gave the upper school students and the teachers a great opportunity to see so much of London!

Eco- WARRIORS off to a fighting start The eco-warriors are leaping into a fighting start as they kick start their campaign schemes. Each of the 30 forms within the school will soon be involved in our recycling policies, where each form in the school will be part of the attack on litter. In addition to this, a Green non-uniform day is being organised in allegiance with ‘The Big Switch Off’ to help cut down CO2 emissions. This is being organised by the Eco-Schools and The Pod to raise awareness on the amount of energy used by the school. As the attack begins, one last siege is being battled as we sign up to recycle mobile phones and collect ink cartridges.
News from the Music Department On Enrichment day, some of the GCSE musicians were in school, making music. They were learning how to use the composition program Sibelius, which was enjoyable, and put them at an advantage with their GCSE compositions. Whilst they were doing this, Mr. Brown had a selection of sweets and biscuits ready for them, which made the experience even more entertaining. Ellen Boorman, Collette Bunce, Megan Baldry, Bryony Farrow, Emily Bell, Tobias Rankin, Kelly Alleyne and Anita Patel
Walter Wright On November 2nd, 25 students and Mrs Napolitano, Miss Drury, Marc Dintinger and Mrs Hitchcock Brown travelled to Paris for a 4 day educational holiday. On their first full day, they visited the Galleries Lafayettes (which is a large shopping centre, similar to Selfridges in Britain), and the Notre Dame – where they also had their lunch. They next had a photo opportunity at the Eiffel Tower, as well as going on a beautiful cruise down the River Seine. To finish off the perfect day, the pupils travelled up the Eiffel Tower and were amazed by the beautiful view of Paris at night. The next day, they set off to the Museè d’Orsay, which is an art museum with a range of artists’ collections including, Van Gogh, Degas and Monet. They then headed to Monmartre and the Sacre Coeur, whilst also passing the famous Moulin Rouge. In the evening they then went bowling. On the way back home they visited the Vimy monument which honours the Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in World War II before going to the Cite Europe. The students had a wonderful time and loved the experience.
Dance4life Dance4life visited HHS on Monday 22nd November. Dance4life is all about informing the students about HIV and AIDS through music and dance, and HHS is very grateful that they have come to our school. With over half the dance4life team living with HIV, the workshop provides a great opportunity VAT is moving online from April 2010 for our students to be more educated about the subject, and a chance to listen to personal stories. One of dance4lifes goals is to assist young people in getting their voices heard by world leaders, so it encourages students to get involved. The students enjoyed the experience very much, and now have About the new penalty regime for the late more of an understanding about HIV and AIDS.

Its now 2011 and I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New year like I did. Just before Christmas we had our Craft fair which was in the Town Hall complex in Hadleigh, The rooms were full of cards, gifts, knit wear and wooden toys not forgetting the food hall which had something for all tastes. On the 3rd December we braved the cold and hosted the Lighting up. The market place had a stage area for The Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band to play festive carols after the lights were turned on by BBC Radio Suffolk. Food was available from the scouts with hot dogs and burgers while the Church's together had hot soup on offer. The Jolly Pig company had a hog roast outside and Mark David and Simon Cook from the Cooking experience had hot puddings on offer to warm us all up from the cold. Local groups braved the snow and ice to raise some money as the sound of carols and punch & Judy could be heard along the High Street. The fair couldn't make it to Barclays car park due to the weather but every one who attending including Santa (who was behind the Christmas tree) enjoyed the festive evening. Thank you to the sub committee Simon T, Sarah T, Richard Seed and Mike from the Kings head for sorting the lighting up event out, Also thanks to Sarah- Jane, Barry, David, Mary and also the Kitchen staff for the craft fair in November it was a brilliant event and I hope we will have you on board for 2011. The committee have had a short break now but work is staring up again on events for 2011. We will be having a Easter craft fair on the 10th April and we also have a music event planned for 25th June. I am writing this when the likelihood of a white Christmas seems a near certainty, although with British weather, who knows! Anyway, here’s hoping you all enjoyed a good Christmas with the minimum of discomfort or re-organisation. My family could be in for interesting culinary experiences as the nearest is forty miles away, the other one hundred and forty. One menu will feature the pudding, the hostess, the meats and I will be tucking in to the bread sauce, stuffing and meringues! ! Whatever has happened, I wish you a successful New Year, especially in the garden and that in 2011 the weather will behave itself and do what it is supposed to at the correct times. My mother introduced me to gardening and nature generally seventy years ago, so like most people, I have seen plants ‘out of sync’ many times but I think the oddest has to be this December with two adjacent holly bushes, one covered in red berries, the other full of little white flowers - no berries in 2011, I would guess - in that area anyway. Our December meeting was once again a dastardly quiz set my our very own resident sadists - only teasing. What the result was I have no idea as the red and yellow cards were being handed out and marks added and taken off at the whim of the said organisers, well by Phillip, mostly due to behaviour rather than knowledge or lack of it! Sincere thanks to Phil and Chris for their hard work in setting it up and making it a thoroughly enjoyable evening which culminated with plently of chat and sustenance. Thanks also to all the committee members and spouses for supplying goodies. For more information phone Ruth Allen 822323

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts As we start a new year I am wondering what the effects of Marketing Directive EC/145/2009 will be on my vegetable growing. In the early 1990's the EU issued a directive that established national lists of varieties, and decreed that the only vegetable seeds that could be sold were those of varieties on the list. In principle this was a good idea as it got rid of multiple names for the same variety, but it imposed significant costs of registration and testing on the seed companies. If you are growing vegetables commercially your requirements vary from those of the amateur grower. For example the amateur grower does not want the whole of his row of cabbages ready at the same time, and is not worried if the variety is easily damaged in transport. The result was that a lot of good varieties quickly disappeared from the seed catalogues. The result was the foundation of the Heritage Seed Library committed to maintaining old varieties to ensure we maintain a good pool of genetic characteristics. This new directive will loosen the rules somewhat, but directives are implemented via national regulations and although they were supposed to be issued by December 2010, they have not appeared yet. They should make it possible to sell more varieties of vegetable seed, but there will be restrictions on the identification of varieties, packeting, and weight of seed in packets. We shall see what happens and how it effects the Heritage Seed Library. Weather Records The weather has been distinctly interesting with snow in November. In Kersey the rainfall was 51.6 mm (2.0") in November (It takes a lot of snow to amount to a significant rainfall). So like October, November was an average month for rainfall. The running 3 month figure is now 158.3 mm (6.2") which is almost exactly average. The maximum temperatures were 18 Cel (64 F) for November, and the minimum temperature was -5 Cel (23 F). These readings are both the highest and the lowest readings since I started including them in 1999. Ground temperature in mid December was 2 Cel (36 F), which is lower than usual. This month's temperature reading I am afraid show how poor monthly temperatures can be at summarising a month of weather, but it is difficult to know what easily collected figures would be more meaningful. Hints The garden will generally look after itself in January, and based on the weather forecasts current while I am writing this we may not see much of it, But if it is not covered with snow on a nice dry day one should think about :(a) Any Hard Landscaping that you want to do. If you get it done now, then you can enjoy it in the Summer. (b) Clear up any dead plants from the summer (preferably to a compost heap), and clean garden paths that are slippery due to fallen leaves and algae. Wash up empty pots and clean glass in greenhouse or cold frame. (c) Prune fruit trees (NOT plum), and late flowering summer shrubs (NOT the early ones like Forsythia and Kerria, or you will lose the flowers.) (d) Providing we do not get too much rain overhaul flower beds containing perennials. (e) Get the Mower overhauled Wishing all my readers a Very Happy New Year, and glorious gardens in 2011. John Rye

Dear Sir Normally I rely upon my grandson’s Christmas visit to remind me that the pantomime season is imminent. But this season began at the beginning of December with the Hadleigh Liberal Democrats’ advertisement in your magazine. The Liberal Democrats labour under the heavy burden of always wanting to take credit for the good things happening in Hadleigh whilst distancing themselves from the bad. East House was handed back by Suffolk County Council whilst the Liberal Democrats were the largest political party on Babergh District Council. Despite the building having been virtually rebuilt in 1995 and the County Council paying for dilapidations at the end of their lease in 2006, the building was closed, the tenants evicted (instead of being put on monthly tenancies) and then handed to agents whose marketing activities on our behalf, in my opinion, left much to be desired. Unfortunately once this woeful lack of effective activity was discerned the market had peaked and opportunities had been lost. However the Conservative Group at Babergh have insisted that the capital works for the new Leisure Centre for Hadleigh are still to go ahead even though part of the funding was predicated upon East House being sold. The Playgroup building in the Calais Street Recreation Ground is another example of Liberal Democrat economy with the truth. The pavilion burnt down during the last Babergh administration. The Housing Panel is chaired by an Independent who is supported by two Liberal Democrats and thus they form the majority. It has taken almost five years to get the Playgroup project completed despite the insurance monies being paid over four years ago. The Playgroup building has happened because Suffolk County Council (Conservative lead) provided substantial finance and support. And so on. What we are not told is which Hadleigh Liberal Democrat District Councillor has been named in Babergh’s Register of Complaints for being caught on the wrong side of appropriate behaviour. Brian Riley, Conservative District Councillor, Hadleigh North

Dear Sir I would like to express my thanks, through your magazine, to Simon and Ross of Taylor's Estate Agents in Hadleigh for the service provided throughout the sale of my late mother's property. During a difficult time, they not only dealt with the matter with empathy and understanding, but also with great professionalism, and with regular updates so as to ensure that we were kept informed of the ongoing progress. They are a grand team, and on behalf of us all, I would like to convey a heartfelt thank you to them both. Lilian Rolfe - Woodbridge
Dear Sir We are all well aware of the changes being proposed by both Suffolk County Council and Babergh District Council, part of which involve them both trying to save expenditure by passing some of their areas of responsibility to Town and Parish Councils and Voluntary Organisations. As yet we do not know which of their services but they could include Libraries, Community Transport, Toilets, Car Parks to name but a few. Hadleigh Town Council is closely following these developments but as yet is not making any statements showing interest in taking on any of the divested services. At the moment whilst both Suffolk County Council and Babergh are seeking notice of our ‘interest’ the Town Council will not be making any decisions until they are given a clear statement of how much these services cost to run and how much money the County or District Councils are transferring with the service. It could appear from our Council minutes that the Town Council is sitting doing nothing. Please let me assure you that when Babergh and County Councils give us the information required we will then decide which way to jump, but agreeing prematurely to take over any service could involve massive increases in the Town Council section of your Council Tax and we do not intend to let this happen. At its’ December Council meeting the Town Council set their precept through very tight budgeting and there will be no increase in your Town Council Tax for 2011/12. Jan Byrne, Hadleigh Town Mayor

Dear Reader, We all at Hadleigh Police Station hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and your New Year has started off how you hoped. The weather really has become severe and many of you, not all, are not taking the right steps to enable a safe journey in your vehicles. We urge you to make your vehicle clear before setting off. Whether it is snow or ice, your windows should all be clear, not just a peep-hole in the front drivers side. The snow should also be removed from the whole vehicle, including the roof. Many drivers are clearing most of the snow but leaving inches on the roof. If an emergency stop is required, the snow will fall full on to your windscreen and will make you blind. The snow can also fly from your vehicle on to the vehicle behind, possibly blinding them. This is totally unacceptable. If you do not care for others, then please care for yourself and in turn this will help everyone else. Please also think of using your lights when driving, even during the day, with the weather being as it is, any extra visibility is welcome. Please be mindful of any elderly people you have living close by, I am sure any help they receive will be greatly appreciated. Whether it is just a knock to see if they are ok or assistance with the shopping or putting the bin out. Do not forget those who should not be forgotten. Burglaries are still an on going occurrence particularly during the festive period, although Suffolk is one of the safest places to live, vigilance is still needed at all times. Please ensure your property is fully secured by locking all the doors when you are out and keeping curtains closed when a light is on and it is night. I have mentioned opportunist burglars before, it is imperative that you always keep them in mind when leaving your property or going to bed. If you have an alarm fitted, set it when you leave, this not only is a deterrent but also makes everyone else aware in the street that a problem has occurred at your address. Which in turn can offer valuable witnesses. Neighbourhood Panel Meeting – Forthcoming meetings & venues. February 16th at 7.30pm Hadleigh High School March 16th at 7.30pm East Bergholt High School

Hadleigh Community Primary News Christmas Celebrations As usual, we have been incredibly busy over the festive period. It all started for us on Tuesday 30th November, when the choir, recorders and bellringers entertained guests at the Hadleigh Baptist Church Christmas lunch. The following week, on Wednesday 8th December, the whole of Key Stage two walked down to St Mary’s Church for our annual Carol service. It was very well attended and everyone had a good time celebrating the true meaning of Christmas. In addition, at the end of the service we made a collection in support of ‘The Porch Project’ at the church, and we were able to donate £163.00 to this worthwhile cause. Following these two events, the choir and bellringers entertained residents at Sydney Brown Court and Angel Court. We feel it is very important that we are able to send representatives of the school out into our local community at this time of year. While all of these events were taking place in Key Stage two, Key Stage one also had an extremely busy time preparing their performance of ‘The Grumpiest Sheep’, which was very well received during the five performances to parents. In addition to all of these activities, Nursery were very busy preparing their own special performance of ‘We’re Going on a Baby Hunt’ – a rewritten version of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, specially written by the Nursery teachers. There were two performances (one for morning Nursery and one for the afternoon), and both were very well supported by parents. The children definitely deserved their Christmas holiday after so much activity! Alternative Christmas Decorations by Year Six The whole school prepared decorations around the building to celebrate Christmas, but year six decided to produce a poignant end to 2010 and a new start to 2011 by making origami Japanese paper cranes. The idea came from the story of Sadako Sasaki, who at the age of two, lived in Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped. Although Sadako survived, ten years later she became extremely ill due to the after effects. During her last year, whilst in hospital, she decided to make 1000 cranes as a Japanese legend says if you do so, you can make a wish. Her wish was for peace. There is now a statue in her memory and written on the statue are the words: This is our cry, This is our prayer, To create peace in the world. Every year, on Peace Day in Japan, thousands of paper cranes are folded and lie at the feet of Sadako’s statue. If enough of us folded a paper crane, maybe there would, one day, be peace in the world! Other events during the last month: On Wednesday 17th November, Year 3 went to Colchester Castle as part of their ‘Romans’ topic. It was a very interactive day, trying on Roman helmets and clothes, holding Roman weapons and building walls. The children visited the site of the original Roman temple below Colchester castle, sketched various Roman artefacts and had a very educational and enjoyable time although the highlight of the day was travelling to and from Colchester in a double-decker bus! On Wednesday 17th and Friday 19th November, Year 4 were invited to go to the High School as part of their habitats topic in science. Animals from ‘Africa Alive’ had been brought to school for the children to learn about and touch, particularly focussing on adaptation. It was a very informative session and once again, we would like to thank the High School for all of their support. Full Time Admission to Primary School Academic Year 2011-2012 A reminder that if you have a child born between 1 September 2006 and 31 August 2007 you must make an application for a full time school place for your child by the closing date of Friday 14 January 2011. Information is available from: • The school office on 01473 822161 • The Suffolk County Council Admissions Team on 0845 600 0981
• The Suffolk County Council’s website at: www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissionstoschools You can also apply online at: www.suffolk.gov.uk/onlineadmissions Would you like to view our school and see what we can offer you and your child? We would be delighted to show any prospective parents our school. Please telephone the school office to make an appointment. New Head teacher for Spring Term 2011 Mr Neil Jackson, our new Head teacher, met parents in the playground on Thursday 9th December. He was overwhelmed by the positive comments he heard about our school and is committed to maintaining the high standards already set. He will spend much of his first term getting to know the school staff, the children and the school routines.

But what do we think about life itself? It is so incredible in all its different earthly forms. Can you really believe that it is just a random occurrence of a creation, which is also random? The evidence for design in nature is so clear to me and many others that there just has to be a Creator. Scientists of international repute are convinced that they can see overwhelming evidence for a Creator in his creation. www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

Newton Green Is High Status Newton Green Golf Club has received its GolfMark High Achiever award from Suffolk Golf Partnership development officer Alastair Spink (centre right) who is seen with club manager Carole List, the club’s junior co-ordinator Ian Woodhead (left) and professional Tim Cooper (far right). The Newton trio was responsible for preparing the club’s submission for the award, which recognises its expertise in coaching, creating a good playing environment, child protection policies and duty of care within the junior ranks. Suffolk is ahead of most of the country in getting its clubs to achieve GolfMark status, with Newton being one of nine to have been awarded high achiever grading. The award gives the clubs priority in receiving national funding for promoting and coaching the game. At the same time, the club was presented with a special certificate to recognise it being chosen as one of three academies in Suffolk helping stage a new initiative aimed at developing young golfers from across the county. Newton junior Alice Barlow, 11, has already received an award at the partnership’s annual meeting when named best junior in west Suffolk at the Newton sessions.
Hadleigh United Under 8's We would like to wish a Happy New Year to all players, parents, families and supporters of Hadleigh Utd U8’s. The boys finished 2010 on a high, with the opportunity to be mascots for Hadleigh Utd 1st team and taking part in a half time penalty shoot out. Well done to all the boys who took part in the competition and congratulations to Devon Miller for getting through to the final to be held later in the season. Excellent celebrations Dev!! A special thanks must go out to Claire and Anna from the under 8s for all their hard work in organising a brilliant Christmas fundraising disco night. No names will be mentioned but there certainly were a few interesting moves on the dance floor! The support is really appreciated and we are pleased to have been able to buy new winter coats for the boys – which are much needed in this weather. We cannot end without the mention of the Dads/Grandad’s five a side competition held before Christmas. Thanks to everyone who braved the snow to come along. It was a successful night – well done to the Reds (red bibs that is, not faces – although there certainly were a few!) it was interesting to see the roles reversed and the boys cheering their dads on from the side line. We are very much looking forward to an enjoyable and successful 2011. Ben and Darren

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre A very happy New Year to all of you and may 2011 bring all that you wish for yourself. Well, more news from the Helpers Supper. In my last Blog of the year you may recall that I told you about David, my Helper who prepares this Blog for me, being awarded Volunteer of the Year 2010 for the East Region of the RDA. Well, I’ve heard talk outside my room that it was announced at the supper that he had also been nominated for a National Award and actually got into the final three, eventually coming second. He received an award as a finalist but, still being on his travels, missed this presentation too with it being received by Jan Derbyshire, our Chairman, on his behalf from Clare Balding at an event in London. The “Shelley Centre Family” Christmas Carol service at Shelley Church was as seasonal and special as ever with baby Oliver taking the part of Baby Jesus this time. In terms of fund raising, the Centre finished the year on a high. In the first instance £933 was raised from the sale at Whatfield Village Hall and then £1,700 (Which included a donation of £600) from the 60’s Dinner and Dance at the Copdock Elizabeth Hotel. Finally, Mike Aldir, Captain of the Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club Veterans, presented the Centre with a cheque for £7,600 collected during his year of office. A very big “Thank you” from all of us to those who have contributed but, especially the Veterans! From the proceeds of the Veterans donation the Centre has been able to buy a new field shelter and a Cyclo-ssage horse massage rug: Kerry has been enjoying the use of it as he winds down to his retirement. Yes! Kerry left us at the end of term and has packed his carrots and hay and moved to his new home where we hope he will enjoy a long and happy retirement. Kerry has been with us almost 10 years now and has been a loyal steady friend to our Riders; we shall all miss him as we miss all of the horses that leave us. The Mayor of Hadleigh adopted The Shelley Centre as her charity during her term of office for which we are very grateful and for the hard work she is putting in to help us. All in all it looks good but, don’t forget, it costs about £60,000 to run the Centre annually. I never cease to take the opportunity to tell you of the great benefits our Riders gain from coming to the Centre because with my being an active participant I see first hand the positive development of our Riders from hesitation, perhaps even trepidation, to full confidence and enjoyment: only as a Helper or active participant can you fully appreciate the full impact upon individual lives. However, benefits also come to the wider family and to this end I quote Bob Talbot, who is known to many in and around Hadleigh, when he speaks of his daughter “We cannot put into words what it means to our beautiful Zoe to be able to do what she loves most. It has given her life purpose again and thank you all at RDA”. While it comes to mind, if you miss reading the Blog, for whatever reason, in the local Community Newspapers do not despair, the Blog is produced monthly, so if you don’t see it in print, go to our Web site where you can read the latest thoughts from me, Ebony and my life at The Shelley Centre, as well as past Blogs. Oh! And before I go, Riders and Helpers, a note for your Diary’s: the first day of the Winter/Spring Term starts on Monday 19th January, don’t forget to be there! Happy New Year! Maggie & Fudge her faithfull guide dog, would like to wish everyone that knows them in and around Hadleigh a very Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year, thank you to all of you who go out of your way to help us throughout the year, from the staff in the local shops to those of you that offer help while we are out on our daily walks. Thank you one and all from us both. Maggie and Fudge
It’s along the Railway walk! “Earthstar” fungi........ Technically they belong to a group of fungi known as Gasteromycetes or “Stomach fungi” which are related to the familiar “Puff-balls” that appear every autumn. Earthstars are peculiar in that - although a fungus they can move themselves upwards through the leaf litter How do they do it! Initially a small onion like “bulb” is formed within the layers of leaf litter. This consists of an inner pouch (Sac) containing the Spores (Seed is the easy comparison), surrounded by a separate tough outer layer of skin (Pericardium). When conditions are right the outside layer splits, dries a bit, and then starts to turns its self inside-out, forcing the points formed from the top of the bulb upward into the leaf litter. As it continues to uncurl (forming the familiar ”rays”) it moves the litter sideways, exposing the central sac. You can see that the fungi in Photograph 1 has moved aside the moss The “rays” then continue to open by rolling down the side of the sac, gripping the leaf litter as they do so, until - as they approach the horizontal - they will really be pushing downward on the litter. In most cases the least line of resistance is then for fungi to be lifted upward to expose the whole organism on the surface as seen in Photo 2.(The silver “blob” is actually a 50p coin) In extreme cases the “rays” will continue to unroll downward until the whole organism is lifted well clear of the surrounding debris, actually breaking the connection with it’s underground threads (The Mycelium) and appearing to stand on some very peculiar “legs”, At the stage you can see in Photo 2 - with the rays fully open and the sac exposed, it is then ready to serve its true purpose - distributing the millions of microscopic spores that have formed inside the central “ball” (Sac) This inner “sac” consists of a very thin, tough, but very flexible membrane with a central hole (pore) that you can clearly see in both photos. When a raindrop strikes it’s surface, the impact makes it flex inward, puffing out a small jet of black spores that are carried away on the breeze to start the process again. I tried to photograph this process by poking it with a small stick but the spores released are finer than smoke – far too small for my camera to record without special apparatus. Once it has served its purpose and released all the spores the whole fungi shrivels up and disappears back into the leaf litter. Today you can see it – tomorrow it will be looking old, and by the end of the week it’s gone. Mick T
Beaumont School Report The time leading up to Christmas is a wonderful time of year to be working in a primary school. At Beaumont this is no exception. Festive activities have been in full swing, with Christmas carols being practiced, seasonal plays being performed and parties being organised. The children in the younger classes, Squirrels and Penguins put on a fabulous performance of ‘Santa on Strike!’. In the play, Father Christmas decides that modern children have too much and don’t deserve any presents at Christmas. Luckily throughout the play the children prove Father Christmas wrong and convince him that they are helpful and thankful for what they’ve got. The acting and singing were marvellous, and it was great to see all the children enjoying their different roles in the play. The Nursery class also put on a more traditional nativity performance for their parents, where they sang and performed with a great deal of enthusiasm. The Rhinos class did their bit in spreading the Christmas cheer by performing for the residents at Angel Court in Hadleigh. This annual event is enjoyed by both the children and the residents alike, especially as the children are rewarded for their efforts with a biscuit, a drink and a lollipop before they leave! The snow did bring some disruption to the school, but it also brought a great deal of fun and excitement. During the snowy period the children had a wonderful time together on the school field enjoying the snow. An army of snowmen appeared, along with various igloos, snow seats and a full sized Santa sleigh. The cooperation and teamwork these activities generated was wonderful to see. A reminder that so much learning in school can happen outside the classroom.

Dixon Dart League 15th November In Division one George A got back to winning ways after there defeat by Legion Legends the previous week, a hard fought 7-4 win against a determined Ram jets side got them under way, Darren Witt producing some great darts which included a 180 in his singles win.Brewers A continued there good start with a 7-4 win at the George B, Andy Taylor was in cracking form for the Brewers hitting two maximums in his matches, Glenn Root was the pick of the bunch for the George side as he also hit a 180. In Division two Clive Godfrey and Stuart Bull both hit 180`s for Hintlesham George as they narrowly beat the Cock Roosters 6-5, in what looks like to be a very competitive league. 22nd November Division one - An early title decider possibly? as the Brewers A hosted the Legion Legends, The in form Curtis Hammond stared for the Brewers side hitting two maximums in his win, but it was the Legion side who came out on top winning this one 7-4, Anthony Nichols with a 180 in his win for the Legends. Ram jets continue to impress with a 8-3 win at the Legion A, Chris Cowan took the man of the match award with some awesome darts which included a 180 in his win for the Jets. Division two - Naughton Wheelers look contenders for the title here as they took apart Hintlesham Social Club winning this one 8-3.Kings Head are hot on their tails after a close 6-5 victory against the Legion B, D.Dagnall hit a 180 for the Legion side. 29th November Division one - Legion Legends continue to keep it tight at the top end of the league with an 8-3 win at the George B, Russel Hynard taking out a 120 finish (60-10-50) in his singles win for the Legends. Legion A can consider themselves a bit unlucky as they went down 10-1 to the George A, Colin Hynard finishing on 126 (19-57-50) but still loosing out to an inspired Kenny Morphew 2-1 for the Legions only win.The Cock have yet to record a win loosing out this week 7-4 to the Eight Bells. Division two - Kings Head demolition of Kersey bell 11-0 did them no harm in the title race, Colin Thackery hitting a maximum in his singles win.Hintlesham George`s Stuart Woodgate also hit a 180 as his side won the local derby at the Social Club 6-5.

Hadleigh Hares Athletic Club Celebrating 25 years of Road Running, Athletics, Cycling & Triathlon HADLEIGH 10 MILE ROAD RACE The Hadleigh Hares would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the annual Hadleigh 10 mile road race and junior 2km Fun Run. Despite the extremely chilly weather 266 athletes completed the course with 66 hardy youngsters (the youngest just four years old) taking on the 2km fun challenge. The course which sets off from the town's football ground and heads quickly into the beautiful rolling countryside was won by Harwich runner Robert Reason in a time of 56.35 with Laura Shrewbridge from Tiptree runners bringing home the ladies in 1.07.07. Thirteen junior Hares took part in the fun run which was won by Ieuan Alldis of Bury St Edmunds Pacers who just pipped our very own Kieran Bleasby to top spot. Well done to you all you future stars! We would also like to thank everyone who helped to make the race a success. Thank you to all the marshals, the race referee, the race results service, our race photographer, the masseurs, Hadleigh United Football Club, Hadleigh BuildBase, Copella, The Cooperative Hadleigh, Tesco Copdock, The Hadleigh Charity shop and all the other unsung heroes, who put an incredible amount of time and effort into organising the race. A special mention however must go to Jo Baker who in her role as race director has spent the best part of 12 months dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s!. Thank you all and we hope to see you again in 2011 HARES IN HELL – Hell runner Hampshire As the t shirt said- from the famous quote from Winston Churchill- when going through hell -keep going!! That was definitely the mantra Steve and Brian were repeating over and over whilst wading chest deep in freezing filthy ice topped water at this year’s Hell runner Down South. Temperatures of minus 4 greeted competitors at Longmoor Camp Hampshire- enough to put off over 1000 entrants, but not extreme enough for over 2000 that did turn up. Waiting for them was 12 miles of tough cross country running along with the infamous bog of doom and Hills of Hell! Steve and Brian started in good spirits, with Brian surging ahead fuelled on by his on the job postie training of 8 miles a day delivering Hadleigh’s mail but still being tracked by now super vet over 50 Steve! The Bog of doom appeared after 50 minutes of running- heroes like Brian milked the cheers of the crowd by running and jumping in, older wiser runners like Steve took the boos of the spectators by trying to avoid the freezing depths by sneaking along the side for a few feet before realizing that there is no escape, and sliding in! Flame throwers, explosions and inflatable crocodiles fly overhead whilst all you can see is the steaming heads of fellow sufferers , whilst hoping not to be pushed over into the murk, or tripping on tree roots lurking in the black slime- just keep saying 'keep going' & try to forget about the extreme cold until you eventually emerge! Anyway- the next pit was even colder & they had to go through it twice! Running on legs that you can see but not feel is an enlightening experience! Brian finished in an amazing time of 1 hr 23 mins in 151st place (26th over 40) whereas Steve completed the course in 1hr 29mins 315th place and 8th over 50 – many many congratulations! COME AND JOIN US – EVERYONE WELCOME! Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club run three sessions a week for adults (all abilities & ages welcome) one for juniors (age 8-16) & one for youths (1625); see below for days & times – every session meets at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre: Monday Beginners Night 7.00 pm - 8.00pm Tuesday Junior Night 6.00 pm - 7.00pm Tuesday Youth Night 7.00 pm - 8.00pm Tuesday Ladies Night: 7.00 pm - 8.00pm. Hadleigh Bowls Club It seems like only yesterday that we started our Winter League Division 2 East on the 6th September with an away match Burstall against and secured our first win of 6-4, and now here we are approaching Xmas very fast and having just played the final match of 2010 against our neighbours Stutton, finishing as we started but this time with a 'full house' win of 10-0. This was not as easy as it may look as our opponents were strong and determined... so well done to all our team. During this time we have played a total of eight matches, and the ninth one against Bramford was cancelled as they did not think it sensible to travel in that spell of bad weather that we were having, therefore this will be rearranged for a later date .AH the matches played so far have been very close fought resulting in four wins and four lost., three being lost 6-4 and the other 8-2. The competition as always will continue to be tough but as one member wrote "onwards and upwards!". It is here that I must congratulate Sam our newest member who played his first league match, a fantastic game and one to be proud of, and whilst being autistic was a great ambassador and hopefully will encourage others to come along and join us. Like mother like son immediately comes to mind as Sam is the son of Angie a well known and liked member of our club who is always treated with much respect from the opposition. I would now like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and friends in League 2 a really great New Year, good health, and good bowling and H.C.B's look forward to all future matches, the ensuing good company and the social gathering when the match is over. We are always looking for new members of any age, instruction will be given and all equipment supplied, please come along and meet us at Hadleigh Primary School, Station Road or contact Russell any time at 01473 311653.

Christchurch Ladies Hockey Club Both Christchurch Ladies senior and junior teams have been happily training at Hadleigh Leisure Centre since September. We run two senior teams- the 1st XI are playing their first season in the East League since promotion last year, and the 2nd XI are currently flying high in Suffolk Division 1. New players of all ages and abilities are always welcome. Whether you’re an experienced player or someone who hasn’t picked up a stick since school, Christchurch offers a fantastic opportunity to get involved with hockey in a friendly club environment. Or if you’re just looking for a bit of fitness, it’s much more fun than working off the festive excesses in the gym! Training sessions take place at the Leisure Centre on a Tuesday night, 7-8.30. Hadleigh United Football Club
Hadleigh Tyre Group
Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd. www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk There was a shock for Hadleigh United supporters when Histon Reserves arrived at the Millfield for a midweek fixture. What should have been a Reserve team by the Cambridgeshire club contained six first team players who normally play at a much higher level of football, but were without a fixture on the night in question. However, Hadleigh raised their game to such an extent that they were the better side and could easily have won. As it was, four goals were scored on the foggy night with Ben Deacon and Josh Mayhew scoring for Hadleigh. Another foggy day greeted Hadleigh on their trip to Debenham. Another splendid performance ended in a nig win by four goals to one to lift Hadleigh into the top half of the league table. Duane Wright opened the scoring before Danny Allen added a second as Hadleigh dominated. In the second half Ben Deacon and Ben Goodchild added further goals for Hadleigh before Debenham scored their consolation goal in the last minute. The fog of the previous two games gave way to bright sunshine for the visit of Wivenhoe with the Millfield ground looking in fine condition. A goalless first half saw the Essex side twice hit the woodwork while Danny Allen hit the post for Hadleigh. We eventually scored when Duane Wright fired home in the second half. Then Ben Deacon added our second goal to put us in control. Hadleigh continued on top to win by three goals to nil. The third goal was fired in by Ollie Canfer after a superb run just before the end. The next three scheduled matches were all postponed because of ice and snow, which melted just in time for our home match against Felixstowe to take place. The Seasiders were a young side but they held their own in a goalless first half. A goal by Ben Deacon early in the second period put Hadleigh in control and Duane Wright soon added a second well taken goal for Hadleigh. We eventually won by four goals to one with Luke Read and Ollie Canfer also on target before Felixstowe scored their consolation goal. This took our unbeaten run to five games but the trip to Leiston ended in defeat by six goals to three. Ben Deacon scored twice with Duane Wright also on taget in an exciting match. With the season half over we can look back with satisfaction on the previous four matches. The reserves drew 1-1 against a strong Heybridge side at the Millfield. Jason Curtis gave Hadleigh the lead but the Essex team equalised later in the first half. A young reserve side gave a great performance to win at Wivenhoe. The only goal of the game was fired home by Daryl Alexander in the tenth minute to lift us up to second place in the league table. A trip to Felixstowe resulted in four goals being shared. Craig Payne put Hadleigh Reserves in front but the Seasiders equalised before Kieran Dilloway restored our lead. Eight minutes before the end Felixstowe levelled again from a penalty kick. Our Ridgeons Youth team have had several matches fall victim to the ice and snow. A home game against Clacton was lost by two goals to one with Deasko Garner equalising for us in the second half. Clacton’s winner came in the last minute. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Pete Tampion, David Crawford and Peter Hutchings. Terry Adams
