The fight to save Hadleigh High Street strengthens... The Suffolk Federation of Small Businesses has joined the campaign to save Hadleigh High Street, 12 noon, 18th May 2013 Hadleigh High Street from the threat of a third supermarket. They state “We think it is crucial that the decision-making councillors (at Babergh) talk to business owners now about the effect Morrison’s is already having and understand the killer effect a third supermarket will have”. Hadleigh Town Council, The Chamber of Commerce, The Hadleigh Society and Hands off Hadleigh have all undertaken for themselves, or commissioned, nationally recognized professional businesses to look at the effects of a third supermarket on the town. They looked not only at the High Street shops and the loss of jobs and possible closures, but also at the implications on the town’s traffic, environment, flood plain and conservation area. All of the professionals employed agree with the conclusions that Hands off Hadleigh, Hadleigh Town Council and the Hadleigh
Society and now joined by the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, have made over the years. The opening of Morissons has seriously affected the shops in our High Street. Indeed if any of the major supermarkets suffered the proportional loss of trade that our Hadleigh High Street is experiencing it would make front page news in the national press and their share holders would be screaming. So what will the Babergh Planning Department recommend to their councillors and how will those councillors vote when they eventually meet to discuss the Tesco Planning application? Will granting Tescos permission to build a further supermarket in Hadleigh compensate for the potential loss of our High Street, the increased traffic, the damage to the conservation area and the increased risk of flooding down the Brett Valley? Or perhaps the District Councillors who are making the decision, of whom only one lives in Hadleigh, will read some of the documents themselves and appreciate what those documents don’t say about the impact that similar stores have had in other market towns. The people of Hadleigh have been correct all along in their campaigns to Save our High Street and ensure that Tesco take their Hands Off Hadleigh. Jan Byrne

Fidelis Activity News That’s The Way To Do It so said Mr Punch in such a weird kazoosounding voice that it made his audience laugh. His onlookers were not a crowd of kids on the beach but a roomful of ladies in the middle of Hadleigh. Long time puppeteer or ‘Punchman’, Peter Battey, came with his work place and props, packed in several bags, to share his trade secrets with members of Fidelis. He deftly re-constructed the familiar booth, showed how all the colourful characters were carved out of wood and demonstrated the use of the ‘swazzle’ to create Punch’s strange voice. He also explained the origins of the Punch & Judy show and displayed the many participating characters. These were hung round the inside of the booth ready to be used. Once the stage was set Peter stood in the booth and gave a brief performance of the traditional show complete with slapstick and crocodile. It wasn’t very long before he had the audience responding to his puppets’ antics with gusto and laughter. Peter Battey performs inside the Some Like it Hotter the icons of Punch & Judy booth highly acclaimed film ‘Some Like it Hot’ re-appear on stage in an afterlife setting, specifically in a sort of limbo between real life and wherever we might move on to eventually when we are ready. Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon were all there together with Charlie a fan of the film. The cast sing, dance and play several instruments to transport Charlie through life changing experiences. Although the play deals with one fan and one movie on a broader level it’s about fantasy and reality: how we’d like life to be, how it really is and how we deal with that. As ever, it was a polished production with an impressive display of talent especially from Monroe’s look alike. Lunch Bunchers Go Veggie It makes a change for vegetarians to be spoilt for choice on a menu. At the Red Lion Veggie Pub it’s their birthday everyday. However, with such imaginative dishes on offer, there is always something to tempt even the most hardened meat eaters. A large group of ‘ladies who lunch’ had a most enjoyable meal there just recently. In a cosy relaxed setting there was plenty of time to chat and eat and marvel at the chef’s creativity with nonmeat products. Desserts were not a problem as they seem to transcend dietary preferences. Jan Devey

The Bell Inn at Kersey Lloyd and Jessica Warwick have just recently taken over the Bell Inn at Kersey. They have restored the pub back to a traditional welcoming country Inn. They have brought back many of the pubs original features, such as the Inglenook fireplace and covered oak beams and totally refurbished the garden and patio areas. Lloyd and Jessica have previously owned and run successful businesses before and have expertise in catering and hospitality. Lloyd was formerly a professional golfer, touring mainly in the USA back in the 1990’s, whilst Jessica has always been involved in catering. Jessica is also a qualified chef and has taught Health and Hygiene as part of one of her managerial roles. After running a very successful pub overseas they returned back to the UK and chose the Bell Inn for its unique location and beautiful setting in the village of Kersey. They offer a traditional pub menu, such as homemade steak and stilton pie, steak and kidney pudding, beer battered fish and chips and liver and bacon and much more, all proving very popular with their customers. There are always daily specials and of course a delicious Sunday roast. Lloyd takes particular pride in his handling of his traditional cask ales, with a local selection always available. The Bell is now open seven days a week and hot and cold food is always available, with afternoon cream teas and cakes a favourite. Pubs like the Bell in Kersey are hard to find, offering so much in beautiful surroundings, why not pay them a visit. For reservations call 01473 823229

Babergh offers free drop-in advice service District Council has teamed up with SNAP – the Support & Advice Project – to offer a free, drop-in service for those in need of housing-related support. From Wednesday 12 June 9.30am-12.30pm and the second Wednesday morning of every month thereafter, a room will be set aside at the Council offices where members of the general public can gain advice on anything to do with housing. SNAP Team Leader Wendy Shepherd said: “We want to help those struggling to live independently in their own home. Many people may face being made homeless because they may be behind on their rent payments or in mortgage arrears and our aim is to prevent this. Or they want to improve their money management and budgeting skills. “We can signpost people to the right service. So please come along and see if we can help you.” Other issues SNAP can help with include developing life skills, access to health and well-being, working and training and accessing community and social networks. The SNAP service is also available at Hadleigh children’s centre and the intention is to offer a similar service at Mid Suffolk District Council in the near future. Anyone interested in using the service should call in to Babergh’s main reception for directions to the relevant meeting room

Noses In The Trough? Is it not a sad example of the current arrogance and greed now blatantly carried out by those we employ to govern us when our own MP, Tim Yeo, is subject to an undercover scam by the Sunday Times? Whether Tim is guilty or not is not what concerns me. Our MPs are not only supposed to be “Honourable” but also of above the average intelligence in order to run the country and best advise us. So why, since the advent of the scandal involving their expenses (remember the saga of the pink laptop?) has Tim been so gullible to fall for such a journalistic sting? Are our legislature so driven by avarice and arrogance that they are so susceptible to such a ploy? From Lord Hanningfield and many others the same press that Parliament has sought to muzzle has uncovered countless scandals involving their greed and lack of principals. So thus warned they still offer themselves for sale. Its not that our Tim is a bad chap. He has an enviable Parliamentary record, having voted against the proposed I.D. card and for greater autonomy for schools. But what of those local Conservative activists who have loyally toiled for their cause. Manning polling booths, distributing pamphlets and often subject to doorstep abuse. Local Tory councillors, many of whom serve for years, some (but not all) for little recompense or recognition. No O.B.E.s, just hours of meetings and frustration that they are powerless to do more for their communities. Not to mention the electorate who have become so disenchanted with such a system. But what is worse is that the cancer of corruption is not confined to Westminster but freely and flagrantly across all our institutions. From Health Authorities and other public bodies where failure and incompetence is rewarded by vast payouts and pensions. From banks, trade unions, quangos and other bodies we have come to accept standards that our forefathers would have found abhorrent. And what is worse, far, far worse, is that these are the morals and standards that we now pass on to our children! Last summer Sudbury’s Lord Andrew Phillips gave a brilliantly perceptive speech at the Sudbury Society’s 40th Anniversary. He rightly stated that our fractured society can only be repaired, not by politicians, bankers and institutions but by us as concerned citizens and above all by the involvement of our youth. We must again give them a country of which to be proud and serve. Whilst todays newspapers report that our government will make it a condition that migrants should know the first verse of our national anthem are they so ignorantly unaware that our own teenagers have never been in a situation to learn, let alone sing those words. Imagine the children of France, America or Ireland not so knowing. But without an honourable example set by my generation why should they bother? Peter Thorogood

As the date of the group arrival becomes imminent we would like to say a very big thank you to all our supporters who have helped to make this years visit possible. Without all the clothing, shoes, toys and medicines donated by the local community we would find ourselves in the position of so many other Links that have had to cut the number of children in the group as their funding was insufficient. This Link of CCLL only brought our first group in 2008 but including this year almost 150 children will have benefitted from this program plus quite a few others have been lucky enough to return again on Private Visits sponsored by their Host Families. Nevelli Designer Home Heating It is fair to say that when decorative radiators first arrived on the scene, they were something of a novelty and were not expected to be energy efficient plus they were also expensive to buy. Today, the new fashionable and modern decorative/designer radiator and towel rails has arrived when home improvements and decor has become an important preoccupation for homeowners. As a result, what were once thought of as purely functional rooms in the home, are now showcases of taste and self expression with the introduction of modern designer radiators and towel rails which match the major investments of kitchen cabinetry, bathroom sanitary ware and home furnishings. Decorative radiator design has now moved from bathroom and kitchen areas to every room in the house and with more and more people striving to achieve individuality and style to suit their homes and life style, whether it be a contemporary look to a more classical period look, Nevelli Designer Home Heating have many different models for all tastes and design. Vertical models are a great option now and these come in a large range of decorative styles, and have the twin virtue of providing a sizeable heat output without taking up a large wall space. Instead they fit into a far narrower footprint, leaving plenty of room for other home furnishings. The contemporary radiators create the perfect focal point to suit any room of the most diverse of styles while the classical period radiators create an appearance of luxury and grandeur and can create an exquisite centre piece. The concept of towel rails for the bathroom now arrive in not just chrome and white, but virtually any colour including black which is now becoming a popular choice today. Quality and design are essential in today’s home design requirements and here at Nevelli the choice of models is wide and varied and the prices are affordable. So why not add a little sparkle to your home 12 High Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5AP Tel/Fax: 01473 828914 Email: nevelli@virgin.net www.nevellidesignerradiators.co.uk

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and Brenda on board M V Black Watch I am so lucky that every day Maria has a meal prepared for me which I enjoy in the Great Hall at the Gibbons’ residence. Apparently, TV suppers are all the rage especially as one can now get a meal in a carton ready to be heated-up. Maria had a night off recently and so I bought a dinner from a Chinese restaurant that one could take away – everything was in tin foil boxes. I gather that the hoi poloi do this all the time but what fun. Well in May trunks were packed and the household joined M V Black Watch at Harwich for a voyage to the Fjords. What a joy to be able to travel without flying which can be such a strain on the arms. Frank brought the car round to the dockside where the Commodore greeted us but there were charabancs for owner-drivers and those arriving on the boat train. Our ship was in today’s terms quite small at 30,000 tons but that enabled us to steam through Fjords surrounded by beautiful mountainous terrain with gushing waterfalls. I enjoyed a breathtaking trip on a train up a mountain at Flaam. We had a splendid time on board and the picture shows my mother Brenda and I en route to a formal night with the Captain. As always, we enjoyed wonderful cuisine and I passed many an hour in the swimming pool soaking up the sun that beamed down most of the time. It was quite eerie that it was still light as I stepped along the Promenade Deck at just before midnight. There were a number of local people on board including several of you my dear readers who kindly introduced themselves. I think that the High Street is busier than it was in the depths of winter. Readers call me to say that prices in the High Street on many items are competitive. It seems to me that the Town is now more than adequately served with supermarkets. It would be quite preposterous that Tesco should be permitted. Take every opportunity to let your views be known. I believe that our clients find their visits to see us to be pleasurable. We always discuss all sorts of things as well as the business in hand. The local property market seems to be buoyant. You should not be tempted into entering peculiar arrangements to achieve a sale with a view to saving Stamp Duty Land Tax or assisting a Buyer to obtain a mortgage that he would not otherwise qualify to receive. These are not arrangements that we can entertain. Time and again I hear of people who do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney and upon losing capacity their affairs cannot be immediately managed. Why not ask us to prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney for you. Howard Gibbons

Rendall & Wright at the Suffolk Show With all the excitement leading up to the 2013 Suffolk Show and despite the weather and the threat of rain, in true British style the crowds came pouring in. Rendall & Wright, interior design practice, pulled out the stops for this year's room set in the Luxurious Lifestyle Pavillion. Lindsey Rendall created an elegant scheme full of interesting detail. A stunning mirrored double bed, designed by Nina Campbell exclusively for And So to Bed took centre stage. Beneath this lay a beautiful floral rug from the Persian Carpet Studio based in Long Melford. The Persian rug provided inspiration for the colour scheme which featured subtle tones of pink, mink, and cream. A pair of Porta Romana lamps pulled the scheme together and brought a stylish sense of symmetry to the Nina Campbell bedside tables. The deep purple of the hand blown glass stood bold against the Osborne & Little feature wall, creating a beautiful, calm and elegant space perfect for any interior. Rendall & Wright also held an exclusive competition and gave away two sumptuous cushions which featured in the room set; Ali Long was the winner on the day! The Suffolk Show will always be a signal for the real start of summer come rain or shine and a great place to discover the new season trends. This year was no different. Congratulations to Kate Lodge who is the lucky winner of our Facebook Competition, who won our beautiful cushions, pictured opposite. A short update this month. We are still waiting for a date for the public consultation on the proposed new planning application for East House. The Babergh press release at the time the original application was withdrawn did not categorically state that the park was "saved", so until such time as we hear this we continue to assume that the park is still under threat. In the meantime, we have been having conversations with the Town Council and the other political ‘leaders’ in Hadleigh to ask them to advocate on our behalf. All the Hadleigh based politicians we've spoken to so far do not want to see the park lost and seem to understand the feeling of people in Hadleigh in a way that Babergh District Council clearly do not. We are planning some further action shortly to make the case for keeping the park so please watch out for that. Our website is http://coxsparkhadleigh.tumblr.com/. Importantly please keep your eyes open for when the public consultation happens and go along and express your views. Last year the planning application was advertised in the school holidays which meant lots of people missed that the park was at risk, we do not want to miss anything this time round. Oh, and please get in touch via our email savecoxsparkhadleigh@gmail.com that way we can let you know when important news comes up.
‘Much Ado About Nothing’ - Open Air Shakespeare Presented by The Lavenham Players and Directed by Annie Eddington At last, in our overexcited world, much ado about something. The Lavenham Players are delighted to announce an open air summer production of one of Shakespeare’s most renowned comedies. With a difference. Our Much Ado About Nothing will begin, as Shakespeare outlined, with men returning from war and the women of home eager to greet them. But instead of the world of the Prince of Aragon and 17th Century courtiers the disputes and deceptions of Much do About Nothing will be set as soldiers return to Lavenham, Suffolk, around VE Day 1945. Think of it as a celebration of Shakespeare and the end of a tormented time in history. And think of the big band sound blasting out - as it will during the production - and Glenn Miller which will perfectly put you in the mood; plan to put out the bunting and get aboard the Chattanooga Choo Choo for a special journey around one of the Bard’s most witty and joyful comedies. This special Shakespeare trip is taking place in the magnificent gardens of Lavenham Hall and for her version of the original rom-com director Annie Eddington intends to take full advantage of the stunning setting framed as it is by Suffolk countryside and Lavenham’s historic church tower. She said: “I’ve been obsessed by Shakespeare for as long as I can remember and he was, inevitably, my first choice when I was asked to direct an Open Air production for the Lavenham Players, Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s most popular, works and is beautifully suited to an outdoor performance. Having the opportunity to stage the play in the unique gardens of Lavenham Hall has made me very excited indeed. It’s a super challenge in a splendid spot, It’s a fun work to watch and be involved in”. The plot revolves around the fortunes of two pairs of lovers - the ill-suited Benedick and Beatrice, and love’s young dream - Claudio and Hero. There are the baddies, the very evil villains, and incompetent constables; furious fathers and saucy servants. Everyone is watching, eavesdropping, or over-hearing at some point. Much ado about ‘nothing’! There’s something for all ages including history and nostalgia buffs. There are Land Girls, vintage Jeeps and characters, some of whom could happily be on parade in Dad’s Army! Tickets £10 from Lavenham Newsagents, Sparling and Faiers Bakery and bookable by telephone and online from the Quay Theatre Box office: 01787 374475 quaytheatre.org.uk or £13 on the gate.

Refurbished Hadleigh Bar and Restaurant Re-Opens A Hadleigh bar has re-opened with a trio of siblings at the helm and a dramatic new look. The Macmillan family has taken on the Ram on Market Place, Hadleigh. Lorna Macmillan and her brothers Oliver and Ian are the new tenants at the Greene King bar and restaurant. The trio also run Long Melford pub the Swan, which they took over in 2011. The Ram has been extensively refurbished and re-opened on Friday 24 May, with a strong focus on delivering an extensive fresh food menu. Lorna, who lives locally, said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed growing the business at the Swan and are all very excited about this new venture at the Ram. It is a wonderful place which is looking fantastic since the refurbishment. We have been careful that improvement works modernise the interior while remaining sympathetic to the character of the building.” The refurbishment has transformed the interior, with improved décor and furnishings. To ensure better accessibility for customers, the bar, which previously ran through the centre of the building, has been entirely moved. Lorna commented: “Moving the bar has been the most dramatic change and has really opened the place up. We have had to build the new bar around some of the beautiful old beams, but it looks brilliant, especially with pump clips sandwiched between beams, and it is much more practical for customers.” The Ram is informally split into three different areas and dogs will be welcome in the lower bar section. Back of house more space has been created in the kitchen. Oliver Macmillan is executive chef and leads on menu development. The Ram receives a fresh delivery of produce every morning which influences the menu’s daily specials. Oliver said: “Our food is mainly British cuisine with a French twist, using local produce where possible, something that is really important to us. Food is a big part of what we offer at the Swan and we are keen to replicate this passion for great food at the Ram.” Some development work at the Ram will continue until the end of June, when the team will unveil a new function room, the ‘Crook’. Intended for private parties and business meetings, the room also benefits from a lobby area where canapés and reception drinks can be served. The team offer to create a bespoke menu for customers using the function room, and parties also enjoy a dedicated waiter throughout their event. The courtyard area is also being landscaped and will open in a couple of weeks. Telephone 01473 822880 info@thehadleighram.co.uk

Plumb Mate are pleased to announce the opening of their brand new on Crockatt lane Industrial estate. Having opened originally in Ipswich back in Oct 2006 three and a half years later in January 2010 they opened their Hadleigh branch to enable them to offer a better service to the customer base that they had built up in Hadleigh and the surrounding area and then a small depot in Felixstowe in October 2011. Plumb Mate do not just service their trade customers but all are welcome to purchase any plumbing, heating or bathroom materials whether it be a tap washer to a complete heating system or bathroom suite. There is a wealth of experience through out the company with many of their staff members having joined the plumbing merchant industry on leaving school so however simple or complicated your task may be there should be someone on hand or at the end of a phone to help you find a solution. Del and Ian having previously worked for a national chain of plumbers merchants in managerial positions for over 20 years were becoming continually desk bound which increasingly prevented them from concentrating on the customer care and service and hands on approach they strived to offer. Opening Plumb Mate has enabled them to do just this. With one example of this ending in Ian opening the doors on Boxing day to enable a customer to purchase a new central heating boiler to replace one that had broken down late on Christmas day. With addition to the new showroom in Hadleigh Plumb Mate also have a Bathroom showroom at their Ipswich Branch which is currently in the process of updating a display area to show easy access showering but still with the WOW factor of a modern shower room. This will be complete late July. We also offer bathroom CAD design to help you choose and make the best use of the room available. This service has been found to be evermore popular as the customer get to see an extreme realistic view of what there bathroom will look like when complete. This kind of product is often charged for but is free of charge at Plumb Mate. We at Plumb Mate also try to use as many local services for their needs. Ian says “we as a company have always tried to source our business needs locally as this helps the local community to thrive”. “We are a family run business like many other local firms so we feel this ethos is the correct one to have”. We are open Mon-Fri 7.00am to 5.30am Sat 8.00am to 12.00 noon Tel 01473 810 088 Fax: 01473 810 055 www.plumbmateltd.co.uk sales@plumbmateltd.co.uk

Cosford Comment ...from Jenny Antill The recent election for Suffolk County Council was a small triumph for democracy in the Cosford Division. Turnout in the area was in excess of 40%, a good deal higher than across the County as a whole, where figures of between 25% and 30% were typical. This result tells us that the majority of the candidates worked hard both before and during the campaign period to engage with people, and also that many residents of Cosford continue to care about who represents them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you voted, regardless of which party you supported. I would also like to urge those of you who didn’t vote to consider doing so at the next opportunity which will be the European elections next year. As J.K. Galbraith wrote, ‘When people put their ballots in the boxes, they are, by that act, inoculated against the feeling that the government is not theirs.’ Cosford, now a division of Suffolk County Council, is named after one of the old Babergh ‘hundreds’ (administrative areas that date from Saxon times). The present local government area does not exactly mirror the original. This included Hadleigh, Layham and Lindsey, and excluded other villages that are now included. Cosford today is made up of the following 18 parishes: Aldham, Bildeston, Brent Eleigh, Brettenham, Chelsworth, Cockfield, Elmsett, Hitcham, Kersey, Kettlebaston, Lavenham, Monks Eleigh, Nedging with Naughton, Preston St Mary, Semer, Thorpe Morieux, Whatfield and Wattisham. During the election campaign I committed myself to maintaining open communication with all the residents of Cosford. Writing Cosford Comment is one contribution to this promise, and I shall always include my contact details so that you can get in touch. I am happy to try to address any problems that you may have, particularly if they are related to council matters. I may not know the answer but I would hope to be able to refer you to someone who can help. I also have a website (address below) which includes articles of local interest and information about me. I look forward to working for all residents of Cosford over the next four years. Jenny Antill is Suffolk County Councillor for the Cosford Division. Hadleigh Show 2013 Family Focus a hit and Food’s on film This year’s Hadleigh Show was another resounding success with praise rolling in for smooth running of the event as a result of the improved layout of the ground, trouble-free parking and minimal traffic congestion, and with more people than ever buying tickets in advance, there was noticeably reduced queuing at the entrances, even at peak times. Online ticket sales and advance purchasing was significantly up on last year accounting for around 20% of overall sales. The Food Hall featured almost a third more food producers showcasing the best of East Anglian produce. These new exhibitors were in addition to 40 new Trade Stands and a number of new sponsors. The Art Show, trialling the introduction of credit card facilities, had its busiest year to date with sales up over 16%. The response to the day has been phenomenal with positive feedback from competitors, exhibitors and sponsors such as: “This year the repositioning of some events/increased size of some stands/ activities and educational opportunities for youngsters made the Show even more enjoyable for us.” ; “The consensus view was that the new livestock arrangements were better, safer and the public saw the head end of the beasts! Also I must say the friendliness and professionalism of the marshals and stewards is really an extra attraction.”; “A terrific day out today .....plenty of good quality and honest food sources, an excellent countryside and farming atmosphere and people

clearly enjoying meeting up and having conversations with each other.”; “We had a very successful day in terms of trading, and were really delighted to be a part of such a great event.” and The layout of the show was excellent and fine hats and bowlers off to you all – very well done!”. A strong programme which reflected a focus on “Families & Farming” was the inspiration of this year’s Show Director and young mother Clare Lock. Clare was so determined to bring families into the spotlight that she featured her two four-year old twins in the promotional adverts for the Show. “Of course the Show remains essentially a traditional agricultural show but what makes this area so great for farming is the strength and longevity of key families who have kept rural businesses and tradition for generations. This year I just wanted to recognise the role of families and to make sure we had plenty of attractions for the younger members of our community.” The new family friendly features such as the “Land Train” with its stopping stages around the showground and the “Passport Challenge” in which children got their card stamped at identified locations before returning to the Membership Tent and a chance to win one of 250 goody bags, proved quite a draw. A welcome surprise for the organisers was an opportunity to shine the spotlight on our local cattle farmers and food producers when a request came in to film at the show. As a result, this year’s Hadleigh Show will feature in one of the five 30 minute programmes made by Alchemy TV: Todiwala and Singh: The Incredible Spice Men. In the programme, to be aired on BBC 2 in August, the two chefs, Cyrus Todiwala and Tony Singh, who are on a mission to convince Britain to wake up to the versatility of spices and exotic ingredients, visit the Hadleigh Show to meet local food producers, feed people some spiced-up strawberries, and watch the cattle classes. We are hoping that the Editors are sufficiently impressed by our bowler-hatted Stewards and showpreened Red Poll, that there will be sufficient footage to remind us all what a truly great day we all had. As soon as we know the exact date the Show is to be on screen, we will post it on the website: www.hadleighshow.co.uk For all this fame, it must not be forgotten that the Hadleigh Show is the biggest fundraising event to be organised annually by the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association (HFAA). In spite of its size, it is not a commercial venture and surplus proceeds from the Show go to local charities. Unusually, this year, a decision was made prior to the event to make a £1000 donation to the Hill Farmers through RABI www.rabi.org.uk for all the hardship they have and continue to endure with the livestock losses from the bad weather. Finally, a few expressions of thanks. The show is run by volunteers, too numerous to mention individually but their continued support and involvement is very much valued and appreciated. Hadleigh’s largest and longest-standing annual community event is made possible by the generous support of Mrs Robert Holden, who each year allows the Show to be held on her land at Holbecks Park. We are grateful to Mrs Holden’s continued patronage and we also thank this year’s Show Director Clare Lock who now hands over the baton to Paul Gillies to start preparations for next year’s show to be held on Saturday 17th May 2013. Save the date for your diary! For further information contact: Janie Barbiaux, Secretary HFAA, Tel: 07971 107644 E: secretary@hadleighshow.co.uk

Jerry’s Diary The lower Brett Valley was the place to bird watch during late April and early May in this area. Wader species put on a good show with 11 species seen on the 3rd May. There were 4 Wood Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper, 7 Redshank, 2 Snipe, 6 Spotted Redshank, 7 Greenshank, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Black Tailed Godwit, 1 Whimbrel and several Lapwings. A species in steep decline, the Yellow Wagtail was passing through in good numbers, 30+ were seen on some days at Giffords Park. There were also 2 Blue Headed Wagtails seen at the end of April. There were 4 Common Terns flying over the River Brett at Shelley on May 3rd. The cold NE wind in spring which persisted for many weeks held back many summer migrants. Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Willow Warbler, Cuckoo, Housemartins and Swallows were reported to have been seen from the third week of April in several locations. Swifts arrived over my house on 23rd April, two days earlier than last year. Turtle Dove and Spotted Flycatcher were seen on 25th May, but in very low numbers. A rather more exotic sighting, an escapee blue parrot appeared in Peter and Jean Morsman’s garden in Hadleigh - so if you’ve lost yours you now know where it is, or should I say was! A Hobby was seen over the garden on 5th May and two more at Giffords on 3rd June. Lester Bennett told me that he saw a Dipper swimming under water whilst canoeing near Higham Bridge in late April. There were reports of this species in the Sudbury area earlier in the year, so it may have been the same bird. A Montagu’s Harrier was also seen near Higham Bridge on the Lower Brett in late May. A Raven was heard calling at Giffords Park on 26th May. Adam Grettons good hearing for the low notes, first heard the Raven before we saw it perched on top of a pine tree, where it stayed for about 20 minutes before it flew off towards Withermarsh Green. Not the most attractive of birds, but still a rare bird in Suffolk. A Raven had been seen in the Nayland area earlier in the year so it may well have been the same bird. This is only the second Raven that I have seen on my local patch, the first being in October 2005 in Layham. The best and rarest of all these recent sightings was a stunning male Citrine Wagtail, seen briefly in the Lower Brett Valley in the late afternoon of May 3rd. It was picked out amongst the many Yellow Wagtails that were passing through at the time. The Citrine Wagtail was only on view for a few minutes before flying off in the direction of Raydon with several of the Yellow Wagtails, and not seen again. As I’ve said before, it’s about being in the right place at the right time, oh, and you need a little bit of luck!! As always if you see anything interesting or would like a bird identified please let me know! jerry@keithavis.co.uk

Coping with Cravings! Cravings get the better of us all sometimes and it can be almost impossible to deny them. If you’re trying to keep your waistline in check it can undo all the hard work you’ve been doing at the gym or by watching your diet. Cravings are caused by a mixture of hormones, emotions and learned behaviour - including how we were fed as children! The hormones most likely to give us a problem are cortisol, insulin and leptin. Cortisol is produced when we are stressed and if not used by the body for energy it is converted into fat and stored! Aim to keep your blood sugar on an even keel by eating little & often, cutting out sugar, refined carbohydrate and caffeine. This will also help avoid craving for fatty and sugary foods, and, long term, should help reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Insulin directs glucose (ie. sugar) to the muscles and liver to be used for energy but again, any excess is converted to fat. Leptin is the hormone that tells us we’re full – sometimes if we regularly overeat this can get “switched off and the over-indulgence becomes even harder to control. All hormones can affect our mood, willpower and energy. Many people find they’re snappy when hungry so if we do our best to keep our hormones in balance by eating a nutritionally balanced diet everyone around us will also benefit..!! Habits can be hard to break – repetition is how we learn so we need to focus on new (better) habits for a sustained period of time before it becomes our new “normal. Substituting a healthier food choice can be a start and won’t have such an impact on our waistlines! If you would like individual help with a weight problem, Val Lord has been an accredited Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant for over 4 years and can be contacted on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645. She is also available at French Complexion, Hadleigh. Go to www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL for more information.

Janet’s Almond Macaroons
C
I love this time of year, when we can M potentially eat outside, when the smell of barbecues fill the air, and locally made iceY cream makes its annual appearance! I have my cousin Janet to thank for this month’s CM contribution. This is a fool-proof recipe and the results will be devoured in no time – trust MY me! BASIL (Buy And Source It Locally) by Sarah Thompson Janet’s Almond Macaroons CY (Makes about 20 small ones) 6 oz caster sugar CMY 6 oz sieved ground almonds 1 egg white K 2 level teaspoons ground rice Flaked almonds to decorate (optional) Rice paper (also optional) Method Oven to 170oC. Mix caster sugar ground almonds and ground rice. Place unbeaten egg white in a bowl and add the sugar/almond/rice mix until you achieve a stiff dough. Roll into small balls and flatten onto rice paper. Press in a flake of almond. Leave a little space between them to allow for spreading. Bake for 20 minutes or until light brown. Leave a couple of minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool. Break off any excess of rice paper. You can also use bakewell /silicon paper, in which case, allow them to cool a bit before lifting off the paper with a palette knife. Larger ones will take longer; any size if you let them colour well, will be crisp and crunchy; lightly coloured will be softer and chewier – you will learn how you like them by experience. Serve them with afternoon tea as a real treat for friends and family – and yourself, of course!

News from Whatfield School Summer seems to have started today, and we have been celebrating with some exciting educational visits. Key Stage Two were excited to visit Darley Stud Farm in Newmarket, where the children met some wonderful horses, and learnt that the whole class weighs as much as one stallion! We were pleased that our year 5 and 6 students all passed their level 2 Bikeability test this week, practising on the playground and field, then travelling on the local roads. We also had a visit from Professor Chaos, funded by the National Grid. He taught us all about electricity, which was a hair-raising experience! We were also very proud to receive the regional prize for our ‘Cookathon’ in March, and the £200 we won, will go to help sustain our cookery club in the next few months as we look forward to harvesting food from the allotment. If you would like to come along and meet us, we have a coffee morning booked in the village hall for July 12th, and you are welcome to take a tour of the school. If you would prefer, you can at a different time, by arrangement with the office on 01473 823 309 Lynne Golding, Headteacher

I have had some fantastic feedback and seeing customers already returning is just great. I am rotating stock weekly and have lovely branded clothing coming in continuously. Daisy and Dukes sells new and nearly new clothing from 0-10 years, stocking nearly new brands such as, Next, Monsoon, Gap, Boden, Ralph Lauren and many more. I aim to cater for every budget and my prices are very competitive. I also stock a small range of new items and currently have some lovely reversible sun hats from Bobbin & Stitch and some much sought after bib bandana’s, baby shoes and baby vests. If you haven’t yet visited Daisy and Dukes, pop in and see us, children are very welcome and toys can be provided to occupy your little ones so that you can browse in peace! 22 High Street, Hadleigh, P7 5AP Tel: 075844 69227
Postman Pat and his black & white Cat! Richard Pearce of Semer with son Martin took part in the Numball Rally Robin Challenge raising money on behalf of Breast Cancer Care which is a fantastic charity that provides support for anyone that is affected by Breast Cancer. Richard and Martin have taken part in the Numball Rally 3 times previously and were thrilled to take part in the 2013 event with their trusted 41 year old Reliant Regal named 'Sir Douglas.' Previous challenges have seen the convoy of Robins travel to the Isle of Sky, Paris, Amsterdam and Wales. 'Sir Douglas', Richard and Martin left Semer and embarked on a total of 1320 miles in just five days. Leaving Essex with 10 other Robins this year was tasked with driving from Takeley in Essex to a tour of Ireland. Sir Douglas had an intensive 'makeover' with new seats fitted, new carpet throughout and had been sprayed bright red to take on the ‘role’ as Postman Pat’s van; and of course driven by Postman Pat accompanied by his black and white cat! This years route was the longest ever undertaken by the Robins and ‘Sir Douglas’ was the oldest Robin of the group and suffered no breakdowns or problems! Through money raised and Richard’s families combined charity events they have raised over £7,000 pounds for Breast Cancer. Please help raise money for a fantastic charity that is very close to many hearts; even a £1 will help this fantastic charity. Please donate at: www.justgiving.com/pearcenumballrally2013

The Return of International Star Mr Pustra, to Clare in Kabarett der Namenlosen The Eye of Time Vintage Boutique in Clare, on the Essex/Suffolk border is to celebrate its first anniversary on Saturday 6th of July with a spectacular vintage evening of theatre, song and dance. The glitz of the 20’s will be fused with the decadence of the 30’s for an evening of wonderful nostalgic entertainment. The boutique is fast building a reputation for selling beautiful quality vintage pieces from its lovely vintage shop located in the Clare High Street. It was opened last July, by International performer and artist, Mr Pustra who then returned to Clare in a 30’s cabaret in the Town Hall last December. The audience came dressed to the nines; many in period and awaited Mr Pustra perform his magic. Pustra normally is found on stage in New York, London and Hong Kong, and has a reputation as’ vaudevilles darkest muse’. No-one was quite sure what to expect in rural Suffolk however, by the end of his performance they were baying for more. The Eye of Time is delighted to once again introduce the inimitable Mr. Pustra. On this occasion accompanied by burlesque starlet Vicky Butterfly and hosted by the compelling Benjamin Louche in a spectacular and nostalgic Cabaret show. The evening will conclude with delicious 20’s and 30’s tunes being played allowing everyone to show their Deco style nimbleness on the dance floor. Proprietors of the Eye of Time, Vanessa and William said; “Mr Pustra went down so well last year that we are constantly asked when is he coming back? So we thought why not celebrate our first years anniversary with another cabaret event. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to dress up but also to raise awareness and funds for local charity, Sue Ryder Care. Tickets cost £16.50 and are available from The Eye of Time, Sue Ryder in Cavendish, Sue Ryder in Sudbury or email vanessa@theeyeoftime.co.uk telephone 01787 279005/01787 278429

...leading the way to active living.
ABF - The Soldiers Charity On Friday 19th July, members of Hadleigh’s 41 Club and, all being well, a few soldiers from 7 Battalion REME from Wattisham will be collecting money for the Army Benevolent Fund. It is only fair to tell everyone why we are collecting and what the money raised is for. The Benevolent Fund is the welfare ‘bank’ that exists to help anyone who has ever been in the army who needs relief. ‘Anyone’ includes widows and orphans. When you realise that many World War 2 veterans are now over 90, and are still with us, and that even the youngest ex-National Serviceman is now well over 70 it is clear that there can be much for the fund to do. After all, there are the elderly who operated in the last days of the empire, from Korea, Aden, Cyprus and many other places, to the Falklands. There are the veterans of Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. It may be a shock to some to know that in Suffolk alone there are roughly 200,000 ex-servicemen and women. Avery few have real problems and need help. The ABF does this, by directly supporting well over 75 charities, such as Combat Stress, St Dunstan’s, BLESMA, and various retirement homes. In addition it deals with many individual cases in conjunction with Regiments’ own funds. The money itself comes from two sources. The first is the Army’s One Day Pay Scheme - one days salary per man and woman, all ranks, per year. As it is given voluntarily, it is quite a lot of money, but the army is getting smaller and the income less. The second source is you. Every year the need increases. Therefore, on 19th July, when you see the collectors, please give generously, the money goes where it is needed most and to the people who have served you faithfully. In advance, thankyou, John Hart
RNLI Concert The Ipswich Community Light Orchestra, conducted by Barry Salmon, recently held a concert in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh, to raise funds for the RNLI. A well-balanced programme was given, including several pieces with connections to Suffolk and the sea. “Orford Nessâ€?, from The Suffolk Suite by local composer Doreen Carwithen, was a most ambitious undertaking that perhaps many in the audience had not come across before, but old favourites in the form of traditional sea songs were heard in a piece called “Fantaseaâ€? by Nigel Wicken. “Sailing Byâ€? (Ronald Binge) was much appreciated, as was a spirited rendition of the “Lifeboatmen Marchâ€? by another local composer, Trevor Brown. Soloist Teresa Booth gave a moving rendition of “The Victorian Kitchen Garden Suiteâ€? by Paul Reade. She also gave a Latin-American taste to the evening with El Viaje by Astor Piazzolla. The evening was rounded off with a selection of songs from musicals, including “Les Miserablesâ€? and “The King and Iâ€?. A profit of ÂŁ505 was raised for RNLI funds. Our thanks go to all who attended and to those who assisted in helping make this event such a success, including the members of the orchestra, and in particular Claire of the St Mary’s Church Office for her assistance. We do hope you will be able to join us for our Shanty Evening on Friday November 29th when we hope to entertain you with a different style of music in the form of The Motley Crew, a group of shanty singers from Brightlingsea. Look out for further details towards the end of the summer. Kate Bailey, Chair, Hadleigh & District RNLI, 01473 823570

Orchard Barn in the Heat of Summer
Quality Plantation Teak Garden Furniture at Warehouse Prices
The blossom on our old fruit trees has been quite spectacular this year, so we are looking forward to a bumper crop. To celebrate this harvest we are inviting everyone to our second Open Day, incorporating our Plum and Nut Festival, to be held on Saturday August 17, 11am to 5pm. Once again, we will have representatives from the Suffolk Traditional Orchards Group to help you identify your own varieties, and give you advice on cultivation and cooking. In our second Basic woodworking skills community workshop, funded by Suffolk Foundation, Tom Castell taught participants how to use a range of hand tools including a saw, plane, chisel and hand drill, with the aim of helping them to feel more confident to undertake their own basic carpentry projects. The end result was a strong stand for our rainwater harvesting tank, using timber that had been reclaimed and donated to us by a local contractor– see photograph. Are you planning to attend Combs Fete, on 6th July? We will have a stand there again this year, and will be running a FREE community workshop. With expert teaching from Helen Woodbridge you will be able to help construct a chair using coppiced materials. Even if you do not want to participate, why not come along and see what we have made in this series of workshops. To register your interest in attending, please email wendy@orchardbarn.org.uk or phone Sarah on 01473-658193 We are continuing our Wednesday volunteer workdays, with occasional Saturdays, and high summer will be a lovely time to experience our site. If you are interested in doing practical work in a beautiful environment do get on touch, even if you have no previous experience. The use of language is continually changing. Sentences now start with 'basically...’, or 'obviously...' when it is neither basic or obvious! My least favourite is 'like'. Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Headlines As you will be aware, we consider developing the leadership capacity of our pupils to be key to developing pupils’ confidence and enabling them to succeed. We recently interviewed Year 10 pupils who had expressed interest in being a member of our Pupil Leadership Team. Each candidate undertook a full panel interview after delivering a formal presentation explaining how they hoped to take the work of our school forward. The pupil leadership team have identified issues which they want to lead with staff and governor to improve the work of our school further and share their views below: Robert Halls: I am one of the head pupils at Hadleigh this year. I hope to ensure that younger pupils can follow the student leadership team in striving to constantly better themselves, in order to create a school in which all are motivated to achieve the highest success they are capable of. Penny Sherlock: As a part of the student leadership team, I aim to contribute ideas to the team to support the school’s development. Raising aspirations is the area in which I shall focus my efforts; I intend to inspire the younger students to take all opportunities given to them and to aim for the highest they can achieve through a range of activities. Harry Forbes: For the upcoming academic year I will be one of your Head pupils. Throughout the next year you can come and talk to me about anything that you like and I will aim to help you to the best of my abilities. I, and the other pupil leaders, will strive to make the school the best place possible for your enjoyment, to get the most out of your education and to continue to improve the school so that you can enjoy your time here to the full. Holly Shanks: I applied for the role of Head Pupil because I want to take a pro-active role within the school. I enjoy thinking of creative ways to improve our school through my enthusiasm and communication skills and am looking forward to responding to the challenges within the role. Niamh Dunn: I am keen to develop our community links further. I will be mainly responsible for the organisation and interaction of Hadleigh High School with the different groups and organisations outside of the school. I will also be responsible for organising new and exciting events inside the school involving all year groups. Joshua Kemp: As part of the Pupil Leadership Team I feel I can help the younger years see the older years as a group of people who can be approached to help and guide them through the first few years of Hadleigh High. I feel passionate about equality and anti-bullying and want to continue to promote positive attitudes throughout the school Joshua Dewes: I applied with the focus of trying to eliminate any form of bullying (including low level incidents). I aim to do this by introducing new anti-bullying schemes further involving pupils to improve existing ideas. Evan White: My role as a member of the Pupil Leadership is to develop the House system. I aim to get more students involved in House activities and, ultimately, unite every year group to further develop an even stronger sense of community and belonging within our school. Alistair Grant: I am looking forward to working with staff and House Captains to further improve the transition of primary school pupils to secondary school as well as focussing on how we can enhance the well being of the students during their first months at Hadleigh. Harriet Dulake: As the head pupil responsible for communication, my main aim is to improve student and parent knowledge of in-school activities and progress; this will hopefully make it easier for students to take advantage of the opportunities that are available to them. I will be working closely with the school council and the community news team to ensure that necessary information is accessible for everyone. Hollie Gregg: I have always thrown myself into Hadleigh’s extracurricular activities and really enjoyed them. I want everyone to have a really positive experience and I am sure that clubs have a big part to play. My goal is to increase pupil participation even further!

Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Over the half-term holiday, the final three groups completed their Duke of Edinburgh expedition. All participants had to walk 25 kilometres over the course of two days, camping overnight at Marsh Farm in Benhall. This was the last expedition they would have to do before achieving their bronze award. Fortunately, all three groups passed and now have to give a presentation to the assessors and fellow pupils to complete the award. The remaining five groups who did their expedition before half-term have now completed their award and are ready to do the silver! The award requires commitment in volunteering, skills and physical recreation. This year has been a record year for Hadleigh High and Suffolk with over 50 students participating, all of whom have passed. Year 7 camp is ‘in tents’ During the week of Enrichment the majority of Year 7s are heading to Mersey Island, in Essex for their first “camp” at Hadleigh High School. This trip will consist of 4 days doing outdoor activities, such as swimming, biking and obstacle courses. Eddie Muschamp, Year 7, said he is “looking forward to being together with the rest of the year group, and doing all of the activities.” Year 7 Reading week Year 7 celebrated Reading Week, organised by the Library and English Department, to promote literacy and reading for pleasure. There were many exciting events held during the week. Manga illustrator, Anna Fitzpatrick, visited our school to work with some of our year 7 pupils, sharing her skills and expertise. The pupils who attended one of the three sessions during the day thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Pupils were shown how to draw a Manga character using step- by- step instructions. Pupils comments included, “Fantastic, can she visit every week?”, “The best lesson ever” and “That was really cool!” The highlight of the week was the book-themed non-uniform day held on Friday 24th May. Pupils made a fantastic effort and the classrooms were full of characters from Harry Potter, The Hobbit , St Trinians and Alice in Wonderland to name a few. Other activities included the ever popular ‘Where’s Wally Hunt’, ‘General Knowledge Quiz’ and Guess the Teacher Reading’ competition. Winning pupils each won a book of their choice. Year 10’s Geography Field Trip A few weeks ago, around 30 students went to The Peak District, on a Geography field trip. They visited many tourist “honeypots,” such as Chatsworth House grounds, a beautiful stately home accompanied by acres of wonderful countryside, and Stanage Edge. The pupils evaluated a handful of towns in Derbyshire, such as Bakewell, Hathersage and Castleton. They were studying the effects of tourism, and debated whether it was a positive or negative aspect of The Peak District. Lumsdale Waterfalls were not as big a tourist attraction, although they were still a sight to look at. Students discussed whether tourism should be enhanced in this serene area of Derbyshire. As well as the educational-side of this trip, the students also enjoyed a lovely visit to The Peak District, and had a chance to experience Derbyshire. Farewell Year 11 The Year 11s final day of being students at Hadleigh High School came about on the 23rd May 2013, with a day of positive reflection of their time at Hadleigh High School. Firstly, the students had a celebratory pizza party just before their parents/guardians arrived, in order to attend the Leavers’ Assembly that was held in the Sports Barn. This assembly was extremely well attended, with every student having at least one parent there. The attendance was, including students, approximately 360 people – an astonishing number! The assembly was kicked off with a speech by Mrs Gibson, followed by every student coming up onto the stage, where they received their leavers file and a DVD of memories that documented their time at Hadleigh High School. Two musical items were included in this event and they were performed by Shelley Manning and Arthur Glazin. Form tutors were thanked with gifts from their forms, for their involvement with the forms over the past five years. Overall the day was an incredibly positive and happy event, one that I am sure will be remembered for a long time. Little Shop of Horrors The school production team is excited to announce the show for next year, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. At the moment, the preparations are just beginning, but it is hoped that auditions will take place after Enrichment week and Year 10 work experience, ready for the start of rehearsals in September. Previous productions have been a huge success and therefore many people are already excitedly anticipating this next performance. Ardèche adventure During Enrichment, Year 9 pupils have the opportunity to go to the south of France for one week. They are taking part in a range of activities, including canoeing, walking, swimming and other water sports. This trip is differing slightly from the previous years, as pupils are spending half the time at the Ardèche River, and the other by the Mediterranean Sea, instead of spending the whole week by the River Cèze. Ellen Seeley, 9M, said “I am really excited, and can’t wait!” Ella Thackray, 9M, says she is also excited “for everything, especially the descent.”

Kersey Mill Newsletter As another month passes at the mill there is little let up on the finds made, discoveries keep rolling in and the team are ever more excited by it all. Recently, the specialist in watermills and mill wright, Vincent Pargeter spent a day looking at the wheel and the existing sluice gate. His opinion is that the existing set up is a bodge by an earlier owner or miller cutting back on maintenance of the mill. Vincent suggested that the team replace the remains of the bodged gate and replace with one that Whitmore of Wickham Market engineered for the mill soon after it opened. Whitmore & Binyon later went on to install a steam engine alongside the waterwheel running an additional 3 pairs of stones. Vincent went on to say “The curved cast-iron plate and the concrete work beyond should follow fairly accurately the circumference of the wheel, and have a clearance of about one inch from it. I feel that the wheel will be under-powered if the gap is greater. It takes a fair amount of power to drive even one pair of millstones, and if the water is low in the summer, it can soon be used up.” The work to be carried out is going to be time consuming but we hope that some progress will be made by the time the open day arrives at the end of June. The process involves the filling of the trough formed under the wheel caused by erratic water flow and lack of maintenance. With the help of Vincent, Chris Hulcoop and Mark Barnard worked up a plan of action to get the waterwheel floor reinstated and the repair of the sluice gates. Sketches were provided and a team put together – then the fun began. A massive tree that had been placed across the tail race was the first obstacle to remove. Being sodden over the years it was not the lightest to remove yet we did so. The result was better than anyone could have hoped for – a 12 inch reduction in the depth of water entering the wheel channel. We then put in stop boards to further arrest the flow of water under the wheel before beginning to pump out the remaining water which we did to wader height. Great – we thought. Then we discovered that the pit was below the water table…Panic. The plan was to drain the wheel channel of all water and cement a new wheel guide to allow the wheel to turn with little water to flow under. Cement does not set under water…or does it. And this is when the next team of specialists joined the team. With the help of a local builder Richard Dyer of Academy Builders who has worked on projects with underwater concrete and an engineer from EuroMix we began to form the next part of our plan. With many huffs and umms the plan was drawn up to form the curvature very close to that of the wheel in concrete. A sump was used to draw the water out for most of the area and the former made up to cast the concrete in the Euromix of – we are told – 50 Newton to 50 Slump…you see we never leave the interesting stuff out do we! So the chain gang of Paul Cuthbert, Gary Bond, Gary Barnes, Callum Davies got to work and in no time at all the cast was full of the concrete. So we waited…every two hours checking the pump and water levels…sleepless nights…and the eventual outcome – it worked. Kegan Jay and George made the most of the better weather and carried out some repairs to the slate roof. Not one for heights myself! Whilst they were up there they took this photo of the view. That done the next stage is to start work on the buckets of the wheel that we shall be showing photographs of in the next newsletter…happy reading and happy summer from all at the mill. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Once again the June meeting was in the form of a garden meeting with supper and general social time. This year Jeff Rudman conducted a tour of my patch explaining the ethos of the site and how I and my late husband, turned the four acres of basically sterile field into a wild life haven. Due to the "odd" season, the meadow was rather behind, but hopefully it was obvious that it has changed dramatically over the twenty four years of its construction. Hundreds of trees are now nearing maturity and the thousands of shrubs and bushes have broken up the acres with avenues, small wood and lots of hedges and shrubberies. Thank you one and all for the beautiful flowers and the folk who helped me in the kitchen and even directing the traffic and of course Jeff for his part in making the evening a success. Until recently, if you drove to Ipswich from Hadleigh via Station Road, after passing Pond Hall and climbing the hill, on the left you would see two wooden chalet bungalows, called No1 and No 2 Aerodrome cottages. To the North of these cottages the flat area bounded to the North by woodland was a ‘Forward Operating Base’ for The Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. However, in 1926, due to the enthusiasm of an ex RFC bomber pilot, Courtney M Prentice, by now a successful businessman in Stowmarket, the Suffolk (and Eastern Counties) Aeroplane Club was formed. In February 1927 the Club bought its first aeroplane, a Blackburn Bluebird soon followed by three more aircraft. In 1928 an Easter Air Display was arranged, the programme for which encouraged potential pilots to learn to fly ‘which would enable you to fly to Australia in 16 days – for fifty five pounds!’ The Club grew rapidly and became a feature in the air calendar of the somewhat exclusive world of private flying. The Hon Lady Bailey of Leeds Castle in Kent agreed to become president and would attend meetings flying in with her friend Mrs De Thailand, whose husband subsequently designed the first jet airliner The 1929 Kings Cup Air race used Hadleigh airfield as a turning point with judges appointed from club members, whilst in the same year an air taxi service was started from Hadleigh to Cambridge, new clubhouses having been completed to provide a suitable terminal at both locations. The Club was sufficiently well established to be asked to run the new Ipswich Airport. On 26th June 1930 on its completion the Club moved there after having sold its Hadleigh clubhouse and hanger to Ipswich Borough Council, for re-erection at Ipswich. The hanger was demolished relatively recently when Ipswich Borough decided to turn the airport into a housing estate, depriving the town and the area of a much-needed facility in the modern world. However, dependent on one’s point of view matters could have been better or worse, for in 1919 a far sighted government committee was considering internal air routes and those to the continent in which Hadleigh featured, along with Hounslow (London), Filton (Bristol), Sheffield, North Shotwick (Liverpool), Doncaster, Newcastle and Edinburgh. So Hadleigh nearly became another Stansted! John Bloomfield

Philip Windsor, Marketing, Communications and Engagement Co-ordinator with the National Trust at Melford Hall, tells us about the forthcoming programme of events. With summer upon us we are looking forward to the school holidays and preparing some activities to keep our young visitors and their parents busy. The first two events celebrate Beatrix Potter’s connection with Melford Hall where she used to come to stay with her cousins and where she got some inspiration for her stories. The fist event at the very beginning of the holidays is Beatrix Potter Day on Friday 26 July. Barbara Hamilton will be in the Banqueting House, reading from The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit. In addition there will be a Peter Rabbit garden trail that children can follow as well as a number of other activities. At the same time Beatrix’s bedroom and some of her drawings and memorabilia will be on display. Later in the holidays, on Friday 9 August, we have another must for Beatrix Potter fans when we welcome back Quantum Theatre for another exciting presentation of outdoor theatre. The whole family can bring a picnic and settle down in the Hall’s garden to enjoy the classic stories The Tales of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny. Pre-booking for this event is essential. The summer continues with an event for children of all ages with our Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Bring a picnic and your favourite Teddy Bear and enjoy an excellent day out for the whole family. Our nurses in the Teddy Bear clinic will make your poorly bears better. You can also find where the bears have hidden their treasure, follow the Teddy Bear garden trail and win some prizes. For details of these events see the events contact us at Melford Hall on 01787 379228 or look on www.nationaltrust.org.uk/melfordhall

Students attending Sugarcraft classes at West Suffolk College in Sudbury have learned that sugar flowers are not just for cakes! As well as learning to make sugar flowers as cake decorations, this year's students have extended their skills and made life-like flowers for use as stunning floral arrangements for the home. Tutor Glenda Price says: "The level of skill displayed here are breathtaking. Most people looking at the arrangement would not know they were not real flowers. As the arrangements came together I had to stand back and say 'Have we really created this?'" Students were delighted to have made something that would be a talking point for friends and family for a long time. In previous years, as well as sprays for celebration cakes, the students have made life-size bridal bouquets and bridesmaid headdresses, posies and button-hole arrangements all in sugar, showing how versatile this hobby can be. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre The Hadleigh Show, and yes, we’re already thinking about next year so don’t forget to make that extra jar of preserve when the time comes, was again a great success for The Centre, raising £1,100 in the process. Many thanks to all of you who purchased items from our stall! Did you see the photo of our team in the East Anglian Daily Times showing off those lovely goodies? At the beginning of June we held our second Pony Day, which like the first, during April, was a great success and enjoyed much better weather. It enabled our Riders to become more involved with the horses and ponies and to experience what it is like to look after these fine animals and all that goes with riding. From what I hear of conversations outside my room I think the day achieved that objective. Our second big event during June was the Shelley Show which enabled our Riders to show off their skills at Dressage and on the Countryside Challenge as well as having a bit of fun in the arena. Full details of the day and prize winners will be published in the Shelley News section of our Website for those who would like to know more about the day, so keep an eye out! I’m often asked to put a call out for Helpers to ensure we can continue our important work and as usual, anyone interested in making a difference please contact us. However, The Centre does have to be maintained, from pooh picking and digging out ragwort to grass cutting, trimming, running repairs etc. this all happens in the background. Although we have a small, enthusiastic part time team helping in this area there is always room for more hands to help out, so, if you are not necessarily a hands on horse person we can always make use of your skills in the ‘Backroom’ area. Particularly in summer months, there is nothing nicer than being out in the fields enjoying the view, watching the birds (And Helicopters) whilst exercising with the strimmer, mower or ragwort fork: fancy the open air, then call The Centre and come and look around. You are not expected to become a full time helper, unless you are able, so any time you can spare will be appreciated. For myself, well, I prefer to watch from my room as I listen to the buzz from the ATV and Sweeper engines as they clean the fields, that is when I’m able and not busy with my Riders. Saturday 8th June started well with the committee turning out to help set-up the various event stalls and the Marquee. There was great hilarity in seeing a bunch of men trying to erect the marquee which looked as if it had almost beat them before they figured out that the frame needed to be adjusted. That was the only hiccup in the set-up and after that was sorted, everything else seemed to fall into place. We were joined on the day by a professional photography outfit called Imfamous Photography. They did a blinding job of keeping up with the players and teams that were constantly at their door, (even though not all teams managed to make it to them). There were Tea & Coffee's being served from the pavilion along with something a little stronger for the Adults which seemed to flow remarkably smoothly. To compliment the beverages, the cooks did a sterling job on the BBQ, serving the attendees perfectly cooked burgers and sausages. There wasn't a lot left at the end of the day. The best part of the day for a lot of people was the Player versus Parents matches which were a great success (Mainly for the Players/Parents). Everyone involved enjoyed the matches immensely. There was a Bouncy castle for the younger people amongst us and the side stalls included Candy floss, Tee-shirts and cake stalls. These were well attended and supported. Once the presentations started after the last match of the day, people gathered to see the Players go up and receive their trophy's from our special guests Mark Murphy from BBC radio Suffolk who was Joined by none other than Ipswich Towns own Kevin Beattie. This was an honour indeed and Kevin was keen to pass on some tips to the players as he presented their trophy. All in all, it was a great day for Players, Parents and all involved

Newton Green Golf Club has fielded its youngest ever players in a Suffolk Tolly Cobbold Cup – and won to the next round. Juniors Ben Tatum, 12, and Harvey Watts, 13, who both play county junior golf in their age group, were included by non-playing captain Harry Wordley in his side that visited St Clements, Ipswich, in the first round of the tournament, which is for players with handicaps above 10. In the morning matches, Newton trailed by nine holes, but put up a great fight back to be four ahead at the end. The two youngsters were paired with more experienced players, Ben Tatum and Ian Colman being one up on the day, and Harvey Watts and club men’s captain Chris Williams three up. Martin Smith and Andy Roper were two up, with Mark Chambers and Bob Talbot just two behind their opponents. The victory means Newton entertain Seckford in the second round on June 23, which promises to be an entertaining day at the club with the first team also at home to Thorpeness in the second round of the Hambro Cup, having enjoyed a first round bye.
New Mixed Doubles Champions! The Hadleigh tennis Club’s “Mixed Doubles” tournament took place on Sunday 3rd June, which was one of our rare sunny days this year. After some competitive tennis, Ben Daniels and Linda Dhondy emerged victorious, after beating Trevor and Elaine into second place. The attached photo shows the happy winners holding up their trophy for all to see. This is a great achievement for young Ben, who has made a lot of progress over the last few years and has now become a stalwart of the men’s section. We could do with some more young players, so come on you Boys and Girls, pop down and give it a go, after all, tennis isn’t just for Wimbledon you know!! Speaking of Wimbledon, our lucky raffle winners will be heading down to those revered courts soon, hoping to see some great matches and get up close to the players. I guess Rafa Nadal will be the favourite, following on from his recent success at the French Open. As part of the on-going maintenance scheme, the courts are likely to be cleaned at some point in the not-too-distant future, which whilst inconvenient at the time, will mean that they are kept in good condition and grease free. Details of the cleaning will appear on our website once we have been advised by the Town Council. Our website has recently been subject to a “makeover”, in order to make the information clearer and provide better directions to the club and courts. We have once again offered a 25% discount to new players this year and we are now publishing dates for club events in a calendar on the website. Please go and have a look at it: www.hadleightennis.org.uk and feel free to give us any feedback about the site. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. Following this year’s AGM we are pleased to advise that annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, as an added incentive, there is a 25% discount available to any new players joining the club for the first time. If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or Paul Knowles on 07747 637147
