Boxford Trio Conquer the Dome! Sunday 12th May saw Julien, Veronica and Robert along with Eileen Norman as witness, leave Boxford and head to London to reach new heights for Boxford Village Hall. When we arrived and stood at the base of the Dome and looked up the scale of what was in front of us reality started to sink in. We headed to the check in desk and before we knew it were whisked in for a safety briefing and then suited and harnessed ready to go. We were then lead to the platform from where we would start our ascent and introduced to the piece of fabric strung between two poles that would act as our walkway over the top of the dome and right down the other side. Once our guide ensured we were connected to the safety cable we gingerly stepped onto the fabric to start our climb, once we had become accustomed to the bounce and movement in the fabric we started to climb the steep walkway towards the centre of the dome. Luckily the weather was in our favour and although it was windy the sun shone on us and we were spared the predicted rain for the duration of the walk. Once we reached the platform in the centre we were unclipped and given the opportunity to move around and take in the spectacular sights from an unusual view point. Our guide also shared with us some of the things they were hoping to do in the future subject to agreement from Health and Safety, who knows in a couple of years’ time we may go back to experience one of their ideas as another fundraiser!!! It was soon time to be re-attached to the safety cable and start the descent down the other side. Seeing the walk way just drop away did make us wonder just how we were going to get back down but before we knew it the ground was in sight and Eileen was standing at the bottom to greet us. Finally we would like to say thank you to all the people that have sponsored us in this latest fundraiser, we have currently raised approximately £1800 of our two thousand pound target. If anybody who has not had the opportunity to donate, still wishes to then please speak to one of us or you donate by texting 70070 quoting BOVH13 and the amount you wish to sponsor e.g. BOVH13 £5 Julian Fincham-Jacques

Local Husband and Wife Team complete Marathon in aid of Breast Cancer Care Victoria and Carl Beswick completed the 2013 Virgin London Marathon with impressive times of 3hrs 55mins and 3hrs 17mins, raising at the last count, an impressive £4378 for Breast Cancer Care, a charity both close to their hearts. Breast Cancer Care is a fantastic charity that provides support for anyone that is affected by breast cancer. They bring people together; provide information and support and campaign for improved standards of care. In the Victoria & Carl Beswick at the end of the 26.2 miles! UK alone, 55,000 women and nearly 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, which means that every 10 minutes someone receives the devastating news that they have breast cancer. Victoria’s mum, Yvette Pearce from Semer was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in November 2011. Nearly a year and a half after her diagnosis, after going through both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she is well on the way to recovery. Donations to this charity can be made via: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Beswick

Neighbourhood Planning Wednesday 3rd July 2013 at Polstead Village Hall starting at 7.30pm Polstead Parish Council would like to invite residents to attend a public meeting on Neighbourhood Planning. Instead of local people being told what to do, the Government thinks that local communities should have genuine opportunities to influence the future of the places where they live. The Localism Act introduces a new right for communities to draw up a Neighbourhood plan. Neighbourhood planning allows communities to come together through a parish council and say where they think new houses should go – and what they should look like. A leaflet on the event will be circulated to each Polstead household by the end of May as well as being publicised on the Polstead website and notice boards. The animals and people at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare are enjoying the warmer weather, when it's not raining. One of the volunteers was talking to the Guinea Pigs in the garden yesterday - and they were answering her! Dawn explained that squeaking and purring are happy noises, sometimes they even sing, and they get really excited when they hear her pulling up grass for them to eat. We have lots of pretty, long haired boys like Buzz and Woody, paired up ready to be rehomed. They make lovely children's pets and the silky hair is tangle free. Although Guinea Pigs can be kept in a sheltered position, a shed is ideal and makes life easier for the owner, especially in the winter. Another talkative animal curently residing with us is Bustopher, a big boy with CATitude! This affectionate, dapper black and white cat has plenty to say but lets you know when he has had enough, so needs an understanding home. Visit him and the Piggies at Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP between 10am-1pm from Wednesday to Sunday or leave a message on 01787 210888. I hear we have several different dogs coming in soon so I'll tell you about them next month. Meanwhile I'm going to supervise making our Scarecrow, ready for the Leavenheath Open Gardens Day on Sunday 23rd June. Don't forget to call in when you get to our end of the village, we are staying open especially and you might see little old me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Fleece Jazz at Stoke by Nayland – not just Jazz! Fleece Jazz is now in its 21st year. The weekly live music sessions began in The Fleece, Boxford, when the Chelsworth Peacock ceased staging gigs, and three of the founding committee are still very active. It has always been unfunded and non-profit making and, although referred to as a club, has no formal membership, or fees, but is open to all. It moved from The Fleece, following licensee changes, and after a brief stay in Kersey, moved to Stoke by Nayland Hotel and Golf Kyle Eastwood Club in July 2009, where it continues to enjoy excellent facilities, catering and flexibility. Because of its international reputation, the Fleece name was retained, and Fleece Jazz received the prestigious Parliamentary Jazz Award for best venue in 2009. The aim of Fleece Jazz is to offer music (usually improvised) which ranges from World Music, through Latin, Soul, Blues and Modern Jazz, often with classical crossovers, They feature some of the best musicians in the world. Many of the performers have parallel careers as educators and session musicians, some playing with THE most popular recording stars. Recently seen trumpeter, Graeme Flowers, for example, has played with Kyle Eastwood, Jamie Cullum, Michael Bublé, Mari Wilson Charlotte Church, Lemar, Quincy Jones, Shakira, Duran Duran, James Morrison, Just Jack, Jamelia, Tony Hadley, Will Young, Lulu, Emma Bunton, Jools Holland, Midge Ure, Mica Paris and Ronan Keating. Get the idea? This June’s programme is typically varied: a Swiss guitarist, Nicolas Meier, is joined by an Israeli drummer, a Spanish percussionist, a locally born pianist and Nigel Kennedy’s favourite violinist to perform music inspired by Morocco and Spain. World Music indeed, and indeed world class. This is followed by sophisticated Renato d’Aiello vocal cabaret from the wonderfully talented singer and performer, still remembered for her beehive hair-do, Mari Wilson, “The Neasden Queen of Soul” with shades of Julie London. Then in total contrast there is the chance to dance (or just sit and listen) to a delightful big band, Ray Gelato’s Giants. Led by Italian born Ray, the band recently featured in the Catherine Zeta Jones hit movie “No Reservations”. June ends with two of the finest musicians around: David Newton on piano and saxophonist-cum-stand up comic Alan Barnes, who together guarantee an evening of great music and great good humour. July sees an up and coming young vocalist, Zoe Francis, who worked in Manhattan, trained as a dancer, and then started singing in the clubs of New York, including Greenwich Village, before returning to London via Bristol to further her career. And now, finally, she makes Suffolk. Very differently on 12th July there is a tribute to the great American drummer Elvin Jones, with five stalwarts of British Jazz: saxophonists Alan Skidmore (ex John Mayall, Ronnie Scott, Soft Machine, Nice, Curved Air etc) and Peter King (ex Johnny Dankworth, Maynard Fergusson, Tubby Hayes, Stan Tracey etc), with master Bop pianist Steve Melling, Sir John Dankworth’s son Alec on bass, and Miles, Tony Levin’s son, on drums. Surely something for everyone! For a limited period Fleece Jazz are offering £5 off per ticket to readers of this magazine. (student tickets, half reduced price) please see the advert for details.

Milden Singers Milden Singers provided a lively concert and an encore was required for the audience hungry for more songs from The Movies. These popular concerts raised £910 for Milden Pavilion Fund and they will be back to get you in the mood for Christmas with their festive concerts in December.

Mill Green Brewery launched a very special new beer on the 17th of May at the Edwardstone White Horse and will be available in other selected local pubs soon. The beer is called Keyworth’s Midseason, it may not be the catchiest name but it is the name of the Hop used in the brew. Hops are like the seasoning in beer and give it bitterness, flavour and aroma. Much like grapes climate and variety influence the flavours found in them. We are continually brewing new single Hops beers, some from England ‘First Gold’, European Hops like ‘Marynka’ and others from further afield like ‘Citra’ from the USA. Each of these beers are very distinctive, but the more citrusy and fruity flavours from US hops are becoming ever more popular. In the 1940s English hop farmers developed a series of new disease resistant Hops. Keyworth’s Midseason was very popular because it was particularly resistant. Although this hop yielded well Brewers disliked it because of its strong fruity aroma and flavour. Brewers then wanted the subtle earthyness and floral aromas of traditional Hops like Fuggle and Goldings. By the end of the 1960s Keywoth had been replaced by less interesting disease resistant varieties. ‘English’ flavours are still popular but today the British beer consumer and seeking out beers with strong aromas like topical fruit, pine needles and Leeches. This inevitably leads to brewers importing Hops from The USA or even New Zealand. Mill Green Brewery prides it’s self on being as eco-friendly as possible. We saw the opportunity to test out a new (old) English Hop that might have interesting flavours as an exiting one. We would like to hear feedback and what flavours our costumers are getting, though Facebook or Twitter @Mill_Green_Brew as would the Hop growers Charles Faram @CharlesFaram

Rural passengers reminded of vital transport service Residents in and around a Suffolk town are being reminded of a vital transport service which is available to them. The Wheels within Wheels community car service run by the Hadleigh Community Transport Group provides people, including wheelchair users, with transport to attend medical appointments, go shopping, take part in social activities and to visit family and friends. The service – which runs in Hadleigh and the surrounding parishes including Bildeston, Lavenham, Boxford, Semer, Raydon, Polstead, Elmsett, Kersey and Monks Eleigh - is open to anyone young or old who have no access to other forms of adequate transport. Staffed by volunteer drivers the vehicles used to provide the service can seat up to five passengers, or three passengers plus one wheelchair user, who contribute to the running cost on a mileage basis. Joy Moran, the group’s manager, said: “This service can be a lifeline for many people within our community allowing them to carry out routine tasks which most of us take for granted. The service is well used, but we do have further capacity so we encourage people within our community to contact us if they are struggling to find access to transport. The beauty of this service is it is not restricted to journeys in and around Hadleigh, for example we can help a wheelchair user and able bodied family members to go shopping together in Ipswich or we could collect an elderly passenger from a rural area where there is no other public transport and bring them into Hadleigh for medical appointments. We could even take a wheelchair user and some friends on a trip out to the seaside.” Those needing further information should contact the Hadleigh Community Transport Group on 01473 826242 or email bus@hadleigh.org

GSOLICITORS IBBONS

Howard on top of The Shard Hello my faithful flock as we head into June. I felt the glimpses of some better weather as I joined over 200 other classic cars on a run from Kelvedon to the Keep at Castle Hedingham which used to be the seat of the de Vere family. I forsook the services of my chauffeurs Frank and Christof and ventured to Gatwick by train to meet a friend who was returning from visiting some continental types in Europe. As I watched the passengers passing through arrivals, I was struck as to how mundane the whole business of air travel has become. The passengers were largely in their mid 20s, dragging the inevitable little case on wheels and dressed as I would should I be spending a little time with my gardener out in the grounds of the Gibbons’ residence. I had an exciting visit to London. Christof my chauffeur brought round my shiny black car and we departed at 6 in the evening for The Shard. Within a couple of hours I was being greeted at the front door of The Shard and shot up its 1016 feet in two successive lifts at 6 metres a second. The views that awaited me on the 72nd floor as I peered out from some of the 11,000 glass panels in the building were fantastic; London was like a toy town laid out before me at all points North, South, West and East. There was HMS Belfast, London Bridge, St Paul’s, the London Eye and so. As the day faded, the twinkling lights of London emerged and I enjoyed the view for over two hours. The tallest building in the world is presently Burj Khalifa in Dubai which is nearly three times as high as The Shard. Christof then drove me to the West End where I listened to some up and coming singers at the Show Off Piano Bar. As I purred back through Hadleigh High Street, you had all been asleep for quite some hours. We have been exceedingly busy advising clients upon the sale and purchase of properties. On a purchase, the results of our enquiries and investigations culminate in a report and accompanying bible of the documents involved. Clients should then be placed to sign their contracts in readiness for the big day. One day you may wish that you had a Lasting Power of Attorney in place: give us a call. News reaches me of a Talents and Interests Weekend at St Mary’s Church Hadleigh on 22/23 June. Local exhibitors will be demonstrating their skills. Telephone Joyce Willis 01473 823165 for details. Parts supply firm wins Queens Award for the third time in succession Plant Parts Ltd is proud to announce that they have been awarded the most prestigious business award in the UK for the third time in succession, The Queen's Award for Enterprise. Plant Parts has been trading for 22 years specialising in the supply of spare parts for construction machinery, they have once again been given the award in the category for International Trade. The business began trading in 1991 and quickly found its niche supplying parts for Komatsu construction equipment and repairing excavator final drives. In 1995 it moved to larger premises and changed status to a limited company. Now occupying purpose built offices, warehousing and workshops of almost 12,000ft the company is well placed to meet the needs of its customers and has a reputation for first-rate product knowledge and parts availability. The company continues to invest in product and customer support IT systems enabling it to provide an industry leading service to customers and the company puts much of its award winning achievement down to the accessibility of product information, “Many of our customers call us for parts in a breakdown situation and they need to know “when can I have it and how much?” said Mr Robert Finch, IT Director at Plant Parts. “We have equipped our sales and support staff with the tools to answer those questions at once. We believe good customer service is the key to success.” Plant Parts has also enlarged its warehouse to accommodate an ever-expanding product range. “We have to move with the times”, Mr Richard Finch, Managing Director said, “it is imperative that we continually monitor our enquiries to be sure we stock current model parts in demand from our customers”. MLSPA Entertains Bildeston! The students at Miss Lesley's School of Performing Arts (MLSPA), Bildeston Branch presented their 2nd variety show "Let Us Entertain You"; with two shows over two consecutive days. From the opening song's first line "tonight I’m gonna have myself Class 1 Somewhere Over the Rainbow! a real good time" to the end of the show; the audience agreed that they did indeed have a really good time and were thoroughly entertained! A spectacular show full of song, dance and drama saw routines performed from top musicals such as Les MisÊrables, Annie, Bugsy and Sister Act, as well as choreographed routines to more modern pieces such as Jessie J, One Direction and Little Mix to name just a few. This year's show also saw a couple of surprise elements; firstly, Miss Lesley herself joining in with a tap routine to "Razzle Dazzle" with student Anna Hubbard and secondly, a number of mums who rehearsed in secret from family and friends (appropriately named the "Hot Mama's") performing to a special choreographed routine of "All That Jazz" from the hit musical Chicago. The matinee show and finale on Sunday, saw awards presented to Lara Reeve (Class 2), Erica Halliwell (Class 3) and Chloe Lister (Class 4) who were voted by fellow classmates for the Class Performers Performer Award. Karen Halliday, Head of Musical Theatre at Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts in London and who also appears on the CBBC School for Stars television documentary, also watched the show and presented Class 1 pupils with a special MLSPA Achievement Medal as well as special awards to Rachel Chinery (Class 2), and Liberty Corrie (Class 4) who both in Karen's opinion performed exceptionally well throughout but stressed that EVERYONE performed brilliantly and all deserved an award! Just over £700 was raised from the programme sales, raffle and refreshments and something exciting will be planned in the near future to benefit the students at MLSPA Bildeston with the profits raised. Miss Lesley would like to give a big thank you to all the students and parents for donations of prizes and cakes, the chaperones, the costume makers and everyone else who helped with this year's show! Photographs shown kindly taken and supplied by 'Photography by Kayla'.

The Hot Mama's surprise the audience!

Pause for Thought What good news would you like to hear today? You’ve won the lottery? Got a job? Illness has been cured? We all have issues and needs and we think it would be good news indeed if our problems were to disappear. Well I’ve got good news - not just good news but amazing, incredible, lifechanging news! YOU are of immense value and worth. God thinks you are so valuable you are worth dying for. God says that in the Bible. It says “God so loved the world (that’s you and me) that He gave His one and only Son (that’s Jesus) that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3 .16). God loves people so much he gave Jesus to die a cruel vile death on a cross so we could be forgiven. You might think that is not the good news you need – but here’s why it is.......Everybody ends up in the same place - rich or poor, famous or not. The Grave. BUT Jesus died on the Cross and paid an extreme cost for all the wrong stuff we each have done. If we are truly honest, we know we have done wrong. God knows that too. We only get into heaven by receiving God’s forgiveness. Jesus did not stay in His grave – but came back to life and made a way to everlasting life in Heaven. That really is the ultimate Good News. Christine Hart

Many people would say they would, but do they really mean it? If they did then they would be slim by now wouldn’t they? Everybody could be slim and healthy if they want to be – all you have to do is make that choice. Yes it really is that simple! Or should be! So what’s stopping you? What’s the excuse this week? Do you have a birthday or holiday coming up or are you too stressed at work? Are you unsettled in another area of your life – a relationship perhaps? Sometimes it’s more deep-rooted and may go back to childhood issues. These things need to be addressed, maybe with professional help. They crop up at some point in most people’s lives but we cope far better with them when we feel happier in our own skin. That means feeding ourselves a healthy, balanced diet, maintaining a sensible weight (it’s not all about being a size 8) and treating ourselves with kindness and respect. So if you’ve been ‘trying’ to lose weight don’t beat yourself up too much (we’re all human) but draw a line under anything that’s tripped you up and carry on. Keep at it, find and use any tool you can to help you. Cambridge Weight Plan is just that - a science-based weight loss tool with the added benefit of your own personal consultant who can help you achieve your goal. Remember – little by little a little becomes a lot. If you would like individual help with a weight problem, Val Lord has been an accredited Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant for over 4 years and can be contacted on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645. She is also available at French Complexion, Hadleigh. Go to www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL for more information. Remember that if you choose to ignore the issue and carry on eating and drinking anything and everything then it’s no surprise that you can’t get to your goal.

Hadleigh & District Twinning Association Biennial Visit 2013

It was that time of year again when there was an early exodus from Hadleigh of 50 members of the HDTA to catch the ferry to France. It was a lovely sunny day and the crossing was so smooth you hardly knew you were sailing. We arrived in Rousies at the “Square Hadleigh” where there is a Rowan tree from Hadleigh growing. There we had a welcome speech from the Mayor of Rousies before going to Ferriere la Grande for a performance by the local choir and more welcome speeches accompanied by a little drink. There was a very interesting display of photographs and newspaper cuttings featuring the Jumelage going back over 30 years. We then dispersed to our hosts homes to be wined and dined in true French style. On Saturday 2 coaches full of Twinning members left Ferriere la Grande for an excursion to Arras. There we visited a display of exquisite historic coaches which are normally housed in the Palace de Versailles. This exhibition is in Arras until November. Lunch was taken at Flunch; a supermarket self-service cafe at Auchan, sadly not the best of French food and organisation. After lunch and a bit of retail therapy we had a guided tour of Arras with an English speaking guide both on the coach and on foot. Back in Rousies we had a very quick change for the dinner dance in Ferriere la Grande. This is always a splendid occasion and did not disappoint this year. We wined, dined and danced non-stop from 8 until 1. Sunday morning was spent relaxing with our hosts and after lunch we were taken to Ors to a memorial to Wilfred Owen, a first world war soldier and poet who lost his life 2 days before the end of the war. We then visited a brewery nearby where we held a meeting of the two twinning committees and sampled the beer. Next year the French will come to Hadleigh over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. The Sunday evening meal was another dinner-dance this time in the 'Salle de Fetes' in Ferriere la Petite. Here we presented the Mayor of Ferriere la Petite with an indoor/outdoor clock, inscribed with “Hadleigh 2013”. In between courses we were treated to a display of Irish and line dancing by a local group some of whom doubled up as waitresses when not performing. Monday morning arrived very quickly and the weekend was over. The farewells were emotional and we left a sunny Ferriere la Grande for the journey back doing our usual supermarket sweep along the way. Back in England our fundraising is well under way and we have already held a Pudding Night in the newly refurbished Ansell Centre. The meal of a light starter followed by 7 or 8 desserts was readily consumed by many of our members, guests and friends. The Line Dancing night which had to be cancelled in March at the last minute due to blizzard conditions has been reorganised. It will now take place on Saturday July 27th; again in the Ansell Centre. If you are interested in the Twinning and joining our visits and fundraising activities contact our secretary Jane Marsland, 828392 or our chairman Peter Matthews, 828233.

Makumbaya School in The Gambia Following our 12 month fundraising efforts for a school in The Gambia we have just returned from a visit to see where the money has been spent. Makumbaya village school stands in the middle of a very desolate area where the pupils are drawn from 3 nearby villages. The school takes children from 3-7 years old, both Muslims and Christians and there are 200 attending at the present time. There is no funding from any educational authority or the Government, the teachers receive no salaries and are entirely dependent on small donations from the local villagers, who themselves are mostly subsistence farmers with very little income. School uniforms have to be supplied by the parents. We were told that some children go to school without underwear because their parents can’t afford to buy it. The school has no money to buy any resources and depends on the goodwill of tourists who visit and take gifts of pencils, pens and paper. At the start of our fundraising our aim was to buy new desks and chairs for one of the classrooms. This done we were then made aware of the terrible state of the roof which was leaking badly and the children had to miss lessons some days during the rainy season because there was nowhere dry to sit. We then sent money for this to be repaired (or so we thought). Imagine our surprise on visiting this year to find a completely new school had been built! Apparently the owner of the land on which the old school had been standing wanted his land back so the school had nowhere to go. Our contact in the Gambia, Batou, a local taxi driver, who visits the school on a regular basis, arranged for the money we had been sending to be put towards buying a plot of land and building a new school. This had all been kept a secret from us until our visit. On arriving at the new school everything appeared to be very quiet but on pulling up in the Landrover we were surrounded by a large crowd of children, all singing “welcome, welcome”. They all wanted to shake our hands and say “thankyou”, it made us feel very emotional. The children had composed a special song for us which they sang with great gusto. We then looked around the new school, which has not yet been completely finished; it comprises 3 classrooms and a small office. The workmen were plastering the last classroom, floors still have to be laid, window frames and shutters, door frames and doors have to be fitted. It is hoped that this will all be completed before the start of the next rainy season which starts in June. During our visit we presented the headmistress with a further donation which we believe will go a long way towards building a small toilet block. We understand the school was built entirely from our fundraising, small donations from the poverty stricken local villagers and a donation from our contact, Batou, which was very generous as he supports an extended family of 12, and sometimes has no income during the rainy season when there are very few tourists and so there is no call for taxi drivers. Although we didn’t see the new desks and chairs we were assured by the Headmistress that they had been put into storage until they could be transferred to the new premises. After seeing the delighted looks on the faces of all the children and receiving grateful thanks from the headmistress and teachers we feel we would like to continue with our fundraising just to see the project completed. Trees need to be planted in the grounds to give the children some shade whilst they are playing outside. It would be wonderful if we could give the school some money to go towards buying essential resources to assist the children with their education. We would like to give a big thankyou to all who have supported our fundraising over the last 12 months:- Hadleigh Thrift Shop, friends at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh, Revd Jimmy Glennon, The Barbers Shop, Hadleigh, Trevor McCleese, colleagues from BASF, Hadleigh Tai Chi, family and friends and all who supported our coffee mornings. We would appreciate your support at our next fundraising event which will be a Coffee Morning at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Friday 19th July 10.00-12.00 noon. If you feel you could assist with our fundraising in any way we would be delighted to hear from you - Rose & Brian Welham Tel 01473 823565

The new season has started on a high for the Diamond-Lites Majorettes who attended the BATON regionals in Clacton and for the start of the season, with new routines only just finished, we had some amazing results. 4 x 1st place routines, 3 x 2nd place routines, 2 x 3rd place routines and 3 x 4th place routines. Our new leaders all brought home 1st-4th place medals and there were lots of 1st-4th place medals for the mascots aswell. Well done to Lakisha for getting smiler of the troupe and Elana for getting personality of the troupe. Then to top it all off the Diamond-Lites girls and boys did it again Overall troupe of the weekend runner up!!! We are so very proud of you all well done Diamond-Lites. There was extra pressure on everyone this year to get the routines finished on time, as the Ansell Community Center has been closed for refurbishment for a few months. We really struggled to find another hall in Hadleigh to train in during this time which was at an affordable price. St Mary's CEVAP School came to our rescue, so from all the committee and all the girls and boys from Diamond-Lites Majorettes a massive THANK YOU to Mr Frolish and everyone at St Mary's School. The Ansell Community Center is now open again and looks amazing! As well as training hard throughout the winter the Majorettes have also been busy fundraising for their much needed new dresses and combination outfits. So thank you again to all the parents and children who gave up their weekends to fund raise and to everyone who brought raffle tickets for our easter raffle. We have alot of new girls in our younger group this year, the Diamond-Sparx (for 3-6year olds and those waiting to join the youngest competing section of the troupe). They have also now finished their routine ready for the Fetes and Events they will be attending this year. So far this year we have many competitions to attend around East Anglia. We also will be attending the Nedging with Naughton Village Fete, the weekend of Celebrations of Interests and Talents at St Mary's Church, St Mary's CEVAP Fete, Monks Eleigh Bygone Vintage Rally, Cornard Fete and Barking Tye Fete. As the competition season has now started we will not be taking any more children until August. If you would like to put your name down to join the troupe in August please call Liz 07738 571307 or Gina 07787 190155.

Bildeston History Quarterly – Issue 7 (Summer 2013) This issue has a spread of articles and pictures relating stories of Bildeston from nearly two thousand years ago to two decades ago. There will be many people who will recognise the front cover feature No.1 Market Place, the shop of Bert and Sylvie Chandler, who retired twenty years ago. A great asset not only to Bildeston but for all surrounding villages, the shop was one of those wonderful Aladdin’s caves, where the proprietors were only too willing to provide their customers with exactly what they wanted. In 1844, the superintendent and six men of Bildeston fire brigade received delivery of their new manual engine. Taken from 19th century newspaper reports, various incidents are related concerning these brave men, who would travel several miles to attend the scene of a fire. A further article concerning Bildeston School appears in the series ‘Hidden Histories’. Cath Anderson kindly loaned the deeds to her Chapel Street home that, among other things, tell what happened when no title deeds could be found at the closure of the school building in 1968 and what became of the site. Does anyone remember Bildeston Community Council and its plans to turn the old school into a village hall? On Friday 9 May 1975, Bildeston was all over national and local newspapers as the tower of St Mary Magdalene’s Church had collapsed the day before. Many photographs showed the gaping hole where the bell-ringing chamber had been and heaps of rubble in the churchyard. However, professional photographer Bob Durham, then a Bildeston resident, had ventured inside the building on the day of the disaster – no health and safety assessment, just a hard hat! Some of Bob’s pictures taken that day now appear as a centre-page colour feature. The series ‘Bildeston on the map’ looks at the 1921 Ordnance Survey in order to trace the alignment of a Roman road that crosses the countryside hereabouts long before Bildeston came into existence. Cassini Publishing Limited is to be thanked for allowing reproduction of its copyright material. “It’s a small world!” A common enough phrase used to describe co-incidences but can you beat the one that Tom Andrews of Manor Road tells about a meeting in Bildeston Church on Remembrance Sunday 1980. Like Tom’s memories, your stories and pictures of the recent past, in whatever way relevant to Bildeston, are most welcome. Published every three months at the beginning of June (Summer), September (Autumn), December (Winter) and March (Spring), Bildeston History Quarterly is an independent magazine designed to promote the history of Bildeston and its surrounding countryside. Except for Issue 1, back numbers are available at £4 each including postage from Sue Andrews (editor), Bildeston History Quarterly, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG. On sale at Bank House Stores and at Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, at Keith Avis in Hadleigh and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

Thank you from Robert Lindsay Can I take this opportunity to thank all those who supported me in the recent Suffolk County Council election in Cosford? That includes voters in Lavenham, Kersey, Bildeston, Chelsworth, Whatfield, Monks Eleigh and Elmsett. I tried to visit as many people as I could in the 18 villages that make up Cosford, which was quite a challenge, as you can imagine. Although I did not win, the fact that I gained 40% of the vote (1,128 votes) is an indication to me that Conservatives majorities in rural Suffolk are not unshakeable, particularly when local issues and services are at stake. Neither I, nor Babergh Green Party, intend to give up. And if anyone has any questions, I can be contacted on 01449 741959. Kind regards, Robert Lindsay, Green Party candidate for Cosford in County Council elections, 147 High Street, Bildeston

The team at the The team at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & restaurant prides itself in Spa celebrate being awarded a second AA using local seasonal Rosette for The Lakes Restaurant. produce, including apples, berries and asparagus which are grown on the hotel owners’ family farm. Alan Paton, Executive Head Chef at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, said: “Achieving a second AA Rosette is a fantastic reward for everyone’s hard work, and reflects our on-going commitment to quality cuisine and the finest local ingredients. “We are passionate about our cooking, and strive for excellence and perfection, which means we can offer our diners a consistent quality experience when they visit The Lakes.” Alan and his team cook up modern British cuisine focussing on what is in-season, as well as trying out the latest gastronomic techniques. During their visit the AA Inspector sampled a meal starting with a dish of lamb sweetbreads with a potato and rosemary wafer, purple sprouting broccoli, wild garlic pesto and lamb jus. This was followed by a butter roasted fillet of halibut, cauliflower and pistachio crust, Ras El Hanout carrots, beluga lentils, BBQ date jam and saffron sauce. The inspector’s meal was completed by a lemon tart, which they described as one of the best they’d had in a long time. The report read ‘it was faultless, a perfect lemon tart – it was sublime.’ Located beside a picturesque lake, within a designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, the restaurant’s stylish contemporary interior features comfortable leather chairs and rows of black and white images showing the many local places of interest. Additionally, the south terrace area of the restaurant has recently been further enhanced so that guests can enjoy an idyllic al-fresco dining experience with fantastic views over the lake and Constable Country.

Kings Pightle Nature Reserve at Bildeston Hidden away between the main road and Bildeston Brook, approached from the corner of the Sports Field in Consent Lane, lies Kings Pightle Nature Reserve. The purchase and creation of this Wild Life Park was the idea and driving force of the late John Artiss who saw the purchase of the land come to fruition in 1994. On his death John ensured that his vision would be continued by making a bequest in his will for the “purchase and upkeep of land in and around Bildeston to be used for nature projects”. It was decided, from the start, that we would “make haste slowly” and we have spent a great deal of time taking advice from leading nature groups, especially Suffolk Wildlife Trust to whom we are very grateful. This lack of intervention has allowed the reserve to develop undisturbed over the years. The diversity of species now established has greatly increased over that period. It took until 2010 for the Committee to feel that the reserve was ready to be opened which was performed by David Halls, Chairman at the time and Brother in Law of John. We have now arrived at the position in its development that an open day can be held organised jointly by the Committee and Suffolk Wildlife Trust on Sunday 23rd June. Please come along and join us to see the various habitats including woodland, marsh and meadow. Just follow the signs to the Sports Field. The School and other local bodies are keenly interested in using it for educational and recreational purposes. Future plans include a Bird Hide and a Picnic Area by the Brook. You can access further information and contact members of the Committee on the web-site: nature.bildeston.org Mac Speake, Chairman

Bury Athletics Trials

This week has been the first week of our yearly Art Exhibition consisting of all the GCSE work produced by our Year 11 pupils. Our students have drawn inspiration from artists such as Colin Bradley, Andy Goldsworthy, Gustav Klimt, Roy Lichtenstein, Jackson Pollock and Van Gogh to name just a few. The outcomes are impressive and cover a wide range of issues and concepts. Pupils have utilised a very wide range of media - water colour, printing, etching, pastels and pen and biro work. They have also developed works which are three dimensional using clay, card, papier-mâché, wirework and plastics. Our younger pupils always enjoy visiting the exhibition and we have had visiting pupils from our feeder primary schools in the past. On the evening of Wednesday 22nd May between 7:00 and 8:30pm we will be opening our exhibition to parents and all pupils across the school. We look forward to seeing you there.

Thursday 9th of May saw a select few Hadleigh Students compete at the Bury Athletics Trials. The event is used to select the Suffolk athletics team, who compete in a number of competitions across the summer months. The following students represented the school in the Suffolk Athletics trials which took place last week included:- Alex Baxter junior boys 1500m, Jackson Crisp junior boys 1500m, Oliver Peters junior boys 800m, James Rooks junior boys 200m and Boris Takam junior boys 100m & High Jump. Lucille O’Dwyer Inter girls100m, Amy Pettitt Inter girls 800m, Ruby Shepperson Inter girls 800m, Rachael White Inter girls 1500m and Jasmine Hayward Inter girls 1500m. George Johnson Inter boys 100 & 200m, Oscar Vardon-Barber Inter boys 100m, Seth Philbedge Inter boys 800m, Luke McGhee Inter boys 800m, Cal Dawson Inter boys 1500m, George Perry and William Disney Inter boys Discus. Our best results were as follows:-George Johnson was an impressive winner of the Inter boys 100 & 200m, Alex Baxter 3rd in Junior boys 1500m, George Perry 2nd in Inter boys discus, Jasmine Hayward 4th Inter girls 1500m and Boris Takam 5th Junior boys High Jump. Other performances which caught the eye, Oscar Vardon-Barber 2nd in the heat of Inter boys 100m and James Rooks 3rd in Junior boys heat of 200m. Amy Pettitt came 4th in the Inter girls 800m. As a result of George Johnson’s performance he is likely to be selected to represent Suffolk in the English Schools’ Athletics Championships to be held in July. In an open meeting recently held at Kings Lynn, George Johnson recorded a personal best time in winning the 200m of 22.9 sec. This is a really impressive time for a 16 year old.

D of E On the 11th and 12th of May the first group on their bronze qualifying expedition, walked from Sizewell to Marsh farm where the camped overnight. The next morning they walked to Chillesford to complete the expedition.

Year 11 Football Cup Final In dreadful conditions, the u-16 boys won a thrilling Suffolk Cup final 3-2 against Thurston. Given the quality of the competition this is an outstanding achievement by our fantastic team. Well done to all of them! Team: Callum Bentley, Ryan Bray, Reece Crisp, Jack Hay, Luke Hines, Louis Hunt-Cole, Regan Ingram, Shaun Lloyd, Dom Manthorpe, Charlie Marks, Tommy Newbigging(c), Sam Sharp, Ben Smith, Diaz Wright (Yr 10)

French Pen Pals

Meeting with Maggi Hambling

On the 10th May students from France came and visited the school to see their pen pals from Year 10. The language teachers established the link between the two schools in order to develop the student’s ability and confidence in speaking the language. During the day, the pupils from France joined in with some lessons, and spent some time talking with the students. ‘I really enjoyed meeting the French pen pals and found the whole experience very exciting. I especially enjoyed showing them round the school and just getting to know them when they first arrived. I was blown away by how impressive their English was and how willing some of them were for a chat’ – Lucille O’Dwyer.

Miss Manford recently took 6 lucky Year 10 students to meet the artist Maggi Hambling; she was opening the art exhibition as St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh. Maggi had agreed to meet with the students before she gave the opening speech. She met and spoke with each student asking them to show her their sketchbooks. The GCSE Art students had been researching the work of Maggi Hambling in their art classes and had recently been on an art trip to Aldeburgh to see “the scallop” sculpture on the beach and then onto the art gallery at Snape Maltings, to see some of her work on sale. Maggi Hambling asked the students about their art work and what were their opinions of her work. She gave them all advice about how to get on in the art world. The students were all extremely nervous but responded to all of her questions fantastically. After this private meeting they all listened to Maggi’s opening speech which was extremely inspiring.

Triathlon Mr Herron, Mrs Garrity and Mrs Wing all competed in the Wattisham triathlon earlier this month. They have been training hard for months; needless to say it was a gruelling challenge of both endurance and will power. Out of a field of 300, the three teachers came in in respectable positions. Mr Herron went on to compete in a 100 mile race the next day, completing the course in little over 5 hours.

Kersey Mill Newsletter

A Concert of Music celebrating Suffolk and the Sea

After many hours of adjusting, lightly thumping and cajoling the waterwheel at the mill has once again turned after nearly seventy years stuck in its frame and silting up. Brave George went into one of the narrowest pits on site and excavated buckets of silt by hand that allowed the rest of the volunteer team to disconnect the pit wheel and wallower from the rest of the drive units. This allowed the water wheel to then be worked on and released George braving the pit from the bearing that had been inserted back to front thus stopping the wheel from moving. Perhaps this was a deliberate way of keeping the wheel stable and fixed until now by the previous miller as a safety tool – we may never know. Once the bearing was turned round and fitted to the drive shaft Steve, Paul Cuthbert and George were the first persons in all those years to make the wheel turn. What a sight – a great cheer went up and the wheel slowly yet surely rotated with the flow of the water and a little help from the gang. The tradesmen working on the house had by The Wallower in mid frame of photograph now downed tools and gathered to witness the sight. In turn the party of volunteers had a go at turning the wheel much to their delight. It was a milestone in the restoration of the mill and all the workings that will go on alongside the restoration of the mill building. Whilst George was digging out what seemed to be endless buckets of silt from around the pit wheel he found a number of artefacts including the windless for engaging the wallower and the drive shaft, a rowlock, some pieces of china, shards of a Delft tile with a sailing ship design, parts of an older mill gearing and some bones. Given the story of the young boy Leech who Some of the artefacts from the pit died in the pit wheel cogs there was worry it could have been the missing parts of the poor boy. Thankfully the bones turned out to be no more than a long forgotten meal consumed by the workers at the mill before it closed down. The water feed channel is next to be cleaned up and repaired ready for the huge iron plate that focuses the flow of the water directly to the blades thus improving the efficiency by 30%. Thanks to the work of the Frenchman Poncelet in 1838 that we have this style of water delivery that is ideal for the slower flowing rivers on East Anglia. Many of the finds will be on show in the exhibition area that will be created for the open day on June 30th between 10am and 6pm with the theme being “Anything Olde “and we would like to encourage visitors to bring anything old, whether they have an old vehicle, an old relic or even an old relative - bring them along as there will be a prize for best on show. Admission is free with donations most welcome towards the mill restoration. Should you have any memories or photographs of the mill please get in touch as many of you have done thus far. All will go into the archive for generations to study in years to come. Contact Allan at allansd545@btinternet.com Thank you for your on-going support for the project. Allan Scott-Davies

Hadleigh & District Garden Club We were treated to the expertise and encyclopaedic knowledge on the growing and distilling of lavender, by Mark De Roy at our May meeting. Mark and his wife own and run the only lavender farm in Essex! They bought a small farm on the side of the Stour Estuary near Harwich and researched what they could grow that would thrive in somewhat unpromising soil. The result of this lead them to try lavender and that was the start of a thriving business in lavender essential oil and and a dozen or so other uses. Things as diverse as honey to hand creams, to pain relief and perfume, plus many more. By their careful study it became obvious that it is one of the oldest commodities, beginning in the mists of time. To ensure the product is never contaminated by association with modern products, like engine oil and other lubricants, harvesting is all done by hand and the distilling uses the ancient methods involving nothing of the modern world of industry. Weeds are pretty much kept at bay by exceptionally close planting and the occasional hand weed. Mark showed us slides depicting the growing, harvesting and distilling from ancient times and emphasising the place lavender has had in the history of medical preparations and perfumes. Next month will be the start of our Summer Season with a "Garden Meeting" followed by two outings. The serious garden season begins on 9th September with a demonstration of "Willow weaving for the garden" by Jo Hammond and marks the return to regular monthly meetings - 2nd Monday in the month in the Dining Room at the Town Hall - look forward to seeing you there if not before. News from the Garden Personal Thoughts The dandelions have been magnificent this year. If it was not for the ease with which they seed around where we do not want them, they would be a popular garden plant. One of the places where they have been seeding is in my lawns, and this Spring I have decided to remove as many as I can. One could treat them individually with an appropriate weedkiller, but I prefer to dig them out with a tool that I have that works very well. Whichever technique you use you will end up with a hole in the grass where the grass has been killed by the shade from the dandelion leaves. I dress these holes with a mixture of sand, compost, and grass seed. I think that the dandelion display has just been one aspect of all of our plants trying to catch up after a very cold Spring. I have a good selection of apple trees, and normally they come into flower over a three week period. This year they all seemed to come out together. I grow a cauliflower called St George because it is usually ready on St George's Day April 23rd. This year I cut them on May 16 th. A couple of years ago I wrote about peat free composts and said that I had found one that I could work with, and was consistent. This year the contents of this brand of sack have changed, and the results of using it have been rather poor, so I am with some sadness back to using a peat containing compost. In the February edition of the RHS journal there was an article with the title "What's in the bag ? It's a media secret" by Nigel Colborn which raised all sorts of questions about the available peat free composts. This is important when the government is trying to phase out the amateur use of peat in composts by 2020. Weather Records In April at Kersey there were 22.5 mm (0.9") of rain, which is about half of the average rainfall. The 3 month figure was 89.1 mm (3.5") which is about 1/2 of the average. So our gardens are getting rather dry. In April the maximum temperature was 20 Cel (68F), which is about normal, but gives a rather misleading picture because it was only warm on 2 or 3 days. The minimum temperature for April was -3 Cel (27F) which is low for April. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 10 Cel (48F), which is about normal for mid May. Hints By June plants have been bought and planted, and most seedling have been raised, so to a large extent gardening moves into a maintenance phase. Plants need to have adequate water and feed, and insect pests need to be kept under control, but the peak in gardening work is over. Some plants will need a bit of extra support as they grow. This particularly applies to tall stately plants like delphiniums. There are optional things that one can do. For example one can get bigger rose blooms by removing side buds on a stem, and if you have space you can lift and divide polyanthuses and primroses so that you have more plants for next years display. Many flowering plants will give you extra flowers if you remove the dead flowers before the plant uses its energy to make seed. June is not too late to sow seeds of many vegetables, particularly with things like lettuce when you want a continuous supply. Good Gardening, John Rye

“Don't throw away your old spectacles” is the plea from the Lions Club of Ipswich Many people have pairs of old glasses laying in draws in their home, now, thanks to the Lions Club of Ipswich, there’s a use for them. The Club is collecting pairs of spectacles to send to countries overseas where people who are less fortunate than ourselves will make use of them. And, with the help of many local opticians, who have agreed to have collection bins in their premises, the Lions are hoping to be able to send many boxes of glasses out to the Lions Sight Projects overseas. Once the collection bins are full the glasses will then be sent off to a central collection point, where they will be checked, cleaned and restored before being sent off to many countries overseas including Africa, India, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea. The Specs Factory on Woodbridge Road was one of the first opticians to sign up to have a collection box. Manager Alan Flint said, “We are very pleased to be involved in such a worth while project. We get many pairs of used glasses left with us when people collect their new ones and it’s great to know that these old spectacles are going to go somewhere where they will be needed” The Lions Clubs have run many sight projects over the years, restoring sight to some people as well as enabling many more to have improved vision. Your old spectacles can help! So, if you are a spectacle wearer and you have a few old pairs laying about gathering dust, do your bit and drop them into one of the collection bins in the Ipswich Area. Collection bins can be found at Specs Factory, Woodbridge Road East, Kersey's Opticians, 22 Tacket Street, Ipswich, Observatory Opticians, 8 Queen Street, Ipswich, as well as the Out Patients and the orthopedic departments at Ipswich Hospital. Old Hearing Aids may also be placed in the bins for recycling.

Midsummer at Orchard Barn – a magical time, when we can reap the rewards of a busy spring Our Basic woodworking skills community workshops, funded by Suffolk Foundation taught participants how to use a range of hand tools including a saw, plane, chisel and hand drill, with the aim of helping them to feel more confident to undertake their own basic carpentry projects. In the process they built a lovely workbench for us – see photograph. We have also recently completed our first Building Sustainable Lives course enabled by grant funding from the European Social Fund. Over a 7 week period five local people braved the complete range of Suffolk weather (remember the cold and snow in March?) to learn traditional building skills with us on our live restoration project. As the range of courses at Orchard Barn continues to grow, so did the need for a dedicated toolshed. Combine this with the ESF grant to deliver 4 skills based personal development courses and lots of positive outcomes are getting built. You've guessed right - we're constructing ourselves a new tool shed as a series of training courses. Our combination of traditional carpentry, green woodwork and wattle and daub has proved a hit with ESF learners. 'I really liked the way the trainers linked the methods and techniques to the time period.' SM 'The training opened my eyes and made me realise I can do more things efficiently than I would have believed.' CL If you're unemployed, or working less than 16 hours a week, and you'd like to get involved we still have places on the last course starting Friday 7th June. Contact ian@orchardbarn.org.uk or call him on 01449 613983 or 07863 999011 to see if you are eligible for our FREE 7 week course. We have a few places left on our FREE community workshops - Working with the wood. Choosing coppiced materials to utilize their individual character, you will develop new skills and learn how to see what the wood suggests to design and construct seating. Help make some benches and a chair or two for our indoor teaching area. We are running this course on 4 dates - 1st, 8th or 29th June (times 10-4.30) under the expert tutelage of Helen Woodbridge. We will also be running the workshop in conjunction with our stand at Combs Fete, 6th July, and showcasing the completed articles. To register your interest in attending, please email wendy@orchardbarn.org.uk or phone Sarah on 01473-658193 We are continuing our Wednesday volunteer workdays, and June will be a lovely time to experience our site. If you are interested in doing practical work in a beautiful environment do get on touch, even if you have no previous experience. Contact Sarah at sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or 01473-658193/ 07766054042 More information on all events and courses can be found on our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Melford Hall has got the 2013 season off to a good start! Philip Windsor, Marketing, Communications and Engagement Co-ordinator advises that Melford Hall has got the 2013 season off to a good start. Despite some very changeable weather our visitor numbers have grown, with the Easter Egg trails and egg and spoon races proving very popular with young visitors on our opening weekend. This year we have restructured our team to include some volunteer roles as part of the leadership team. We believe that this will help us to plan for the future and enable us to improve the visitor experience at Melford Hall. For example we are in the process of re-creating Ulla, Lady Hyde Parker’s dahlia bed on the North Lawn as can be seen in the photo from 1960. We still have a number of volunteer vacancies to fill which are ideal opportunities for people who enjoy being involved in bringing a wonderful family home and garden to life, whilst creating an enjoyable experience for all our visitors. The roles available are: Room Guides, Gardeners, Visitor Meet and Greet, Tearoom volunteers, Retail volunteers Call us today to find out more about how you can get involved. We can be contacted by telephone on 01787 379228, or by emailing melford@nationaltrust.org.uk or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/melford-hall

The Boxford Tornado cycling sportive, organised by the Boxford Bike Club, certainly lived up to its breezy name this year, as 400 riders battled against a stiff southerly wind to complete the various routes. Although the day was bright and sunny, the wind gave the participants an extra unexpected challenge, making the event more memorable for some! The event had sold out in a matter of weeks, proving again how popular the sport of cycling has become in this country. Unfortunately the persistent wintry weather meant many riders had less preparation time than they would have wanted. The southerly wind pushed the riders out towards Ixworth at the most northerly point, where they turned south again and battled back to Boxford for the next 30 miles. The faces of the returning riders - a mixture of horror and relief - told the story of how tough the ride had been. An amazing spread of cake, donated by the members of the bike club and local residents awaited their return, organised by a very efficient team of helpers from the Boxford Community Council who were staffing the refreshments this year. The riders donated very generously for the refreshments, recently enabling the bike club to present a cheque for ÂŁ500 to the community council raised from the proceeds. The feedback from riders was extremely positive, most enjoying the undulating, picturesque route and the friendly, welcoming atmosphere of the event, not to mention the abundant amount of homemade cake! A successful event like this, obviously wouldn't happen without the help and cooperation of many. Our thanks go to the Boxford Community Council for offering to run the refreshments, to the bakers who donated the cakes and to the army of volunteers who marshalled the event. Lastly we would like to say a big thank you to the residents of Boxford, especially those who live in Homefield for happily accommodating all the two wheeled folk for the day. Matthew Shinn

Newton Green's pair of fast rising girl golfers are again rewriting the club's record books. The ladies' course record was stretched again by Eloise Aldous and Alice Barlow as the 14-year-olds shared the major honours in the club's 36-hole club championship day. Aldous, who had brought the course record down by three shots to 74 last year, carded a morning round of 73 (two over par), and in the afternoon Barlow Eloise Aldous (left) and Alice Barlow returned the same score to leave them joint course record holders. Barlow's rounds of 74 and 73 gave her the Ann Tankard Trophy for the club championship - three shots better than Aldous (73 and 78), but the latter did not qualify for second place as under the rules of the day restricting winning places to one per player, she had already won the Emmie Hoar Trophy for the best net score, with a total of 136. The pair, who have recently completed their second winter coaching season with the England Girls' squad, have been named as reserves for the full Suffolk side in the forthcoming regional county championship event, with Barlow now playing off five and Aldous seven. Newton Green ladies' championships day: Emily Hoar Trophy (net): 136 Eloise Aldous, 143 Leighanne Wordley, Carol Durston 147. Ann Tankard Club Championship Trophy (gross): 147 Alice Barlow, 169 Emily Penfold, 177 Sally Cade.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group The First XI have made an excellent start to life in Division 1 of the Two Counties Championship, with three wins out of five putting them in the higher reaches of the table. Player of the month has to be Marlon Dias, who has scored over 250 runs already including 61 not out against Elmstead and 92 not out when Josh Davey’s team put down a marker against highly fancied Coggeshall, chasing 180 for the loss of just two wickets. While Australian Luke Ibbs is still acclimatising to playing in five jumpers, he is proving useful with the ball and giving Josh plenty of options. There are several theories for the team’s good form, from playing three spinners in May to an intensive winter training regime, but there could be another factor – a diet of Haribo snakes and cola bottles which have been rapidly disappearing from behind the bar into the dressing room. Not since the jelly bean scandal at The Oval in 2007 has confectionery played such a prominent role in a cricket team’s performance. Other teams have had mixed fortunes – the Seconds have struggled a little with the weather, player availability and wasted journeys to games already cancelled, and the Sunday 1st XI have also found some of their opposition to be weaker than expected. The withdrawal of Lavenham from the league has further depleted their already limited fixture list. Hopefully last week’s clash with Sudbury (too late for this report) proved a more worthy encounter. The rules governing selection for the Sunday Second XI – you must be either under 15, over 40 or have Tampion as your surname – seem to be working well. It was certainly a tale of two Tampions against Battisford recently, as 11-year old Aaron returned figures of 5-1-6-3, while his slightly more experienced uncle Buster bowled five overs, no maidens, 1-52. Don’t forget the bar is open every Saturday afternoon from 1pm on match days – serving teas and coffees, ice creams and with special beer promotions. Regional Success for the Hadleigh Dolphins Ben Olive came an impressive 31st in the East Region Youth Championships held at the appropriately named 'Inspire Sports Village' Luton on the 4th May. The Olympic sized pool certainly inspired Ben to record a 32 seconds time in the 50m Backstroke in the male 15/16 year old Group. Head Coach, Alex Deal, seen in the photo with Ben, said "it was a great day out and we aim to have more swimmers qualify next season". Ambitious plans from the Hadleigh based club which sent a Juniors team to Leiston on the 4th May, swimmers making their debut swim were Harry Searle, Alex Seeley and George and Daniel Nistor, the team was placed third overall. The club will be holding a 'Barn Dance and Hog Roast' in September to raise funds to replace the existing starting blocks which are at least thirty years old, details to follow in the next issue of the News Letter. The club is open to offers of sponsorship so if there is a company interested please contact carey.fraulo@orange.net.
