FEBRUARY 2024
Warm Welcome Coffee Club
coming to Sudbury town to encourage volunteering and enhanced well-being As a result of a successful application to Babergh District Council Community Grants for the Living Well in Winter fund: Gainsborough’s House Warm Welcome Coffee Club (GHWWCC) will be launched on Wednesday 21 February 2024. Drop-in to say hello between 10:30am and 12:30pm. This space will enable Gainsborough’s House Volunteers access to a warm and social space. A space that will allow volunteers to meet with one another, especially those from different roles across the site. It’ll be a safe space for them to share experiences and knowledge, and to enjoy each other’s company in a communal setting. This creates the perfect opportunity to support each other in a personal capacity and to improve well-being, particularly in terms of accessing local support from organisations that individuals may have experience or involvement with. If you’ve been thinking about volunteering and would like to know more, the GHWWCC gives an incredible and ideal opportunity for the local community to join us to find out about volunteering at Gainsborough’s House in a relaxed, warm and welcoming place. Let us know you’re dropping in by contacting, Catherine King, catherine@gainsborough - we can’t wait to welcome you! Newcomers can also use the space to learn how they can get involved at Gainsborough’s House. With access to this grant, we have allocated funding towards a new Volunteers’ Welcome Pack which will be used to support our volunteers, new and existing. Come and see us for the launch on Wednesday 21 February and please see the dates below for other openings of the GHWWCC: 13 and 27 March, 10 and 24 April, 15 and 29 May and 12 and 26 June. 10:30am – 12:30pm. Come to our main Reception in the New Galleries, on Weavers Lane to sign in.

Every year, all parts of the UK, LadyinLane Industrial Estate, Hadleigh IP7 6BQ millions of people are supported www.wjgreen.co.uk by thousands of community transport staff and volunteers to stay independent, participate in their communities and access vital public services and employment. Community transport is not just about moving people from point A to point B. It is about fostering a sense of belonging, bridging divides, and empowering individuals to access education, employment, healthcare, and social opportunities that are the bedrock of a thriving community. Community transport provides flexible and accessible community-led solutions in response to unmet local transport needs and often represents the only means of transport for many vulnerable and isolated people, often older people or people with mobility disabilities. GoStart Community Transport serves Sudbury and District, using minibusses and MPVs to deliver services such as community bus services, school transport, hospital transport, dial a ride, group trips and days out. Most services are demand-responsive, taking people from door to door, but we also run a scheduled service along a fixed route where conventional bus services aren’t available. GoStart CT is a registered charity because it is run for a social purpose and never for a profit. It is often the most reliable, resilient and accessible way of ensuring the broadest range of transport needs can be met. GoStart is always eager to hear from new volunteers. We need more drivers, passenger assistants, even additional Trustees. To learn more about volunteering with GoStart, visit our website at www. gostart.org.uk - or call us on 01787 242116.

Dear All, I hope you are all keeping well and warm. As mentioned in my January article I made reference to my being busy with lovely carol concerts and attending Christmas parties. This proved to be the case. On Christmas Eve I visited our Care Homes in Sudbury. A very rewarding and emotional time and had a great time talking to staff and residents. At Red House the residents sung me a lovely carol, what a privilege. The staff who look after our relatives and friends are so committed. A big thank you and well done to you all. On Christmas Day I attended the Town Hall to give out vouchers to our elderly residents as part of a long-standing tradition. The Christmas Day ceremony began in 1668. Nathaniel King, Alderman of Sudbury, dedicated a ground rent charge at the east end of North Street, directing that the money from the charge be used to provide overcoats of coarse grey cloth for elderly deserving men on the town and be given to them on Christmas Day. Every year the Trustees continue to mark this unique bequest by holding a short ceremony in the Town Hall where the Mayor of the day presents vouchers to between twenty to thirty residents, now including the ladies. Sudbury has so many great and wonderful traditions, which is all part of its undeniable charm. A few weeks ago, on a very windy and wet morning, together with our Town Centre Manager, we presented the winners of the Christmas Window Display and the Mayors winning Choice. The People’s choice was a tie between Number. 72 North Street and Select Hair in Friars Street. The Mayor’s Choice was Marimba. Well done to the winning entries and all those who entered. I believe that entries were higher than other years and the standard was extremely high. In January I was privileged to do a recorded message for people with visual impairments. Sudbury Newstalk distributes audio recordings of local news every two weeks and the magazine every two months. All done by a fantastic group of volunteers. In my article I always try to provide positive information but following recent events I feel it necessary to write the Council’s views and that of many people in Sudbury and the surrounding areas on Babergh’s proposal to engage with people from January to February on the introduction of revising the parking charges in relation to the current free 3 hours. The Council have written to Babergh advising them that the Town Council is shocked by this proposal and during an Extraordinary meeting resolved unanimously that the retention of 3-hours free parking in Sudbury is vital to sustain the local economy and is non-negotiable. There is a petition to sign if you so wish as well as provide your views to Babergh during the engagement period. On a more positive note, I attended Babergh’s Planning Committee meeting early in January when the application for the new toilets and café in Belle Vue Park was discussed. I am thrilled to write that this application was unanimously given approval. I understand that both the toilets and the café will be completed before the Summer. More good news is the completion 08:56 of thePage 3 February 24 Text.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2024 newly renovated toilets in Goal Lane. We have waited for this for a long time, and I know that this will be well received. Please keep well and safe.

Welcome from Linda and Kathy, Centre Coordinators. Well, we survived the storms and hope that you all came away unscathed by the recent torrential, unrelentless rain and high winds. Unfortunately, our lovely Grade 2 Listed building was not so lucky. You may have seen the very large puddle outside our building which, after traffic constantly going through it and spraying the building, the water has managed to damage internal walls and our lovely new carpet at the front of the building. Many people passing by were also showered by the inconsiderate actions of the drivers who could have avoided the puddle. Despite the rotten start to the year weatherwise, we are very fortunate to have been chosen by Roy’s of Sudbury as their Charity of the Year meaning that for every carrier bag sold, The Centre get 10p, and as they say every little helps!! Or is that another retail store…?! Also, The Sudbury Community Depot have been chosen by Drage and Tozer Opticians of Sudbury as their chosen Charity of the Year. We would like to thank Suffolk Community Foundation for their kind generosity, Councillor Osborne and Councillor Smith of Babergh District Council for generous locality donations. Thanks also to Tracey Cowley and Jo Batley for their wonderful donation after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro. We would also like to thank Goodchild Lime Plastering contractors for a swift and excellent ceiling repair and Good with Wood for the long-awaited repair on our very stiff front door and frame. We can all actually get in the building a little easier now! As always, we thank our amazing volunteers and trustees for their ongoing support, we could not function without them. We are pleased to say that all of our regular groups are now back to normal after the Christmas and New year break. Our Menopause Group will be back on Thursday 1st February and the Vegan Supper is also back on Friday 1st March. We are delighted to say that The Sudbury Gainsborough WI has recently joined us as a new group on the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm. For details contact Gill McLay at sudburygainsboroughwi@ gmail.com or call in to find out more. The Christopher Centre is a thriving community hub where many local groups run their classes and activities. It is also a hub which provides a much-needed space for essential services to run, to serve the community in many ways including the NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Clinic, The Community Depot, The Drop in Monday Club, Turning Point for those affected by addiction, the Christopher Choir and the C’Art Group to name but a few. As a charity, we are facing new challenges, as are most charities. With individuals facing ever growing bills and price increases, our donations are dwindling and our overheads rising. We have successfully increased our room bookings to help cover our overheads but to continue with the fantastic service we provide to so many people, we too will have to rely on the generosity of those that are in a position to support us. We offer a number of rooms available to hire. We also house offices used by local voluntary and community organisations. Our room hire is available on an hourly basis, from £6 per hour. We aim to continue bringing a friendly community approach to the people of Sudbury and surrounding areas, please contact us if you would like to visit with a view to hosting your group. You can find us in Gainsborough Street opposite Gainsborough's House. Why not come along say hello and have a look around?

MP’s Fair is just the job James Cartlidge, MP for South Suffolk will be holding a Jobs Fair on Monday the 4th of March with Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, following his successful events in Great Cornard in April 2022, and Hadleigh last year– which led to a number of uplifting real life success stories, for example, one small local employer recruited two valued members of their team as a result of the events. Last year’s event hosted more than 50 exhibitors and over 500 attendees looking for new opportunities. Many of the businesses were optimistic about taking on new employees following the event which led to multiple positive outcomes for local people and employers. “We found the event very useful and it was a good opportunity to help people understand the job opportunities. From an ‘exhibitor point of view’ I wanted to congratulate you on the organisation and engagement on the day. We were impressed with the number of companies who attended and the steady flow of people looking for employment. We look forward to future events.” – Sudbury based employer
“Our first candidate that came along, I’ve actually employed him” – Hadleigh based manufacturer, 2022
“The selection of employers, the mix of advice, jobs and colleges, apprenticeships etc, made for a wide spread of choice and options. It is something that should definitely be held more often, as I don't think people really know what is out there locally. Top marks, that's what community should be about, when is the next one?” - Attendee
“It was good to have the opportunity to find out more about local employers. We found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming. It would be lovely if this event could become a yearly event.” – Attendee
We look forward to seeing you at the Fair in Sudbury on the 4th March This advert is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his parliamentary duties. Rotary Club of Sudbury Sudbury Rotary Club plans two ‘open to the public’ events during February. The first is a free, potentially life-saving ‘Save a Heart’ Day on Saturday 10, from 10 a.m. until 1.00 p.m. A team from East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) will be on hand to train people to do CPR and use a defibrillator so that they know what action to take if anyone might be having a heart attack. The Air Ambulance is one of the Club’s chosen charities this year and there will also be a Rotary street collection with donations invited to support the EAAA. The ‘Save a Heart’ event will take place at the Hive Community Hub in School Street, Sudbury, and refreshments will be available. There is no need to book; just come along and learn how you might save someone’s life. The second will be a ‘Call my Bluff’ evening on 14 February, starting at 7.00 p.m. at The Hive Community Hub, in School Street, Sudbury, when you are invited to join in the fun of this game. Teams of six will take it in turns to convince the other teams to select the incorrect words. Points will be scored and the most successful team will win a bottle of wine for each team member. The cost will be £15 per person, which will include a fish, chicken or sausage and chips supper. Please book your place via email at cmb@sudburyrotary.com. Funds raised will be donated to Rotary Club local charities. Bring your own drinks and nibbles and invite your friends - can you bring a whole team of 6? What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day! At the Monday lunch-time meeting on 5 February at Newton Green Golf Club, the guest speaker will be Rotarian Ian Graham, who will be reporting on the work of the Rotary Foundation, which supports people in need throughout the world. On Monday 19, Cllr Jan Osborne, will tell us more about her “Life as the Mayor”. These meetings will begin at 12 for 12.30 p.m. and there is an option to purchase lunch at the Golf Club bar on arrival. Rotary is open to people from all backgrounds. We would welcome more men and women of all ages and interests to join us. What brings us together is our wish to support our community, here and overseas, and enjoy each other’s company while doing so. Visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings, but please do telephone 07341 290415 to let us know. If a weekly meeting over lunch is not convenient for you, you might wish to consider joining ‘Rotary 2’, Sudbury’s new ‘Satellite’ Club which plans to meet more informally. Check out more information about the Club at www.sudburyrotary.com.

Plans for a new café and toilet block in Sudbury’s Belle Vue Park have been given the green light. On Wednesday, 10 January, members of Babergh District Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the plans, which will provide visitors of the park with modern and accessible facilities. Included within the new modular building will be a community café which can accommodate up to 50 customers, with both indoor and outdoor seating. There will be four toilets available for public use, as well as an additional fully accessible changing place facility. To make way for the café and toilet block, the existing 1930s building will be demolished. Funding was approved for the project in September 2023, which includes use of the proceeds from the sale of Belle Vue House in May 2023. Derek Davis, Babergh District Council cabinet member for economic growth, said: “Belle Vue Park will continue to move in the right direction thanks to the unanimous approval of these plans. “We are committed to supporting the regeneration of Sudbury town centre, with the installation of the café providing a welcome lift to the area and giving visitors something new to enjoy.”

Babergh urges Government to fix ‘broken’ funding for councils
CW
CLEANING SERVICES
Weekly Fortnightly Deep Cleans Babergh District Council leaders are calling for the Government to address a local authority funding crisis, as it faces a £1.8million budget gap. Councillors will scrutinise the draft budget for 2024/25 next week, which includes details of the shortfall and proposals to increase the district’s share of council tax bills by 2.99%. A report to Babergh’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Monday 22 January shows the cost of providing its services to residents and communities is expected to rise by £2.5m to £15.12m next year – a 21% increase. This is mainly due to inflationary pressures, particularly interest rates and salary costs, while there has also been a reduction in planning fees as potential development continues to stall due to the economic downturn. Babergh’s acting leader and cabinet member for finance, assets and investments, Cllr John Ward, said: “While our costs have risen 21% in the last year, Government funding has increased by just 3.4% in the same period. "This alone, however, does not truly reflect the cash crisis faced by councils. The Local Government Association says core council spending power has suffered a 27% real terms cut since 2011. “Babergh is a well-run authority. We are making savings, driving efficiencies, and reviewing our fees and charges - but this year we will have to spend reserves to balance our budget. That is unsustainable - you can only spend reserves once.” The council is increasing fees and charges to reflect the actual cost of providing licences and services. It also continues to engage with local communities over the introduction of new parking tariffs in Sudbury, Hadleigh and Lavenham. A savings programme is also expected to achieve savings of £557k. However, the council is still left with a £1.8m gap, requiring ‘tough decisions’ to be made. Cllr Deborah Saw, deputy council leader, added: “The current system of funding local government is broken. Some councils have already gone bust, and others are heading towards a cliff edge. The financial outlook for the coming years gets worse. “We urge the Government to review how councils are funded so we can continue delivering the services which our communities rely on.” When the Government announced its annual grants for local authorities in December, it based its forecasts on the assumption all councils would raise their council tax by the maximum allowed. This would mean a 2.99% increase to Babergh’s element of the bill – the equivalent of £5.46 a year, or 10p a week for a Band D home. The district’s share is less than 10% of the total bill, with the remainder going to Suffolk County Council, the Police and Crime Commissioner and town or parish councils. Council leader Cllr Dave Busby, who has temporarily stepped down from day-to-day council duties while undergoing cancer treatment, said: “From that small proportion of the bill, we need to pay our staff, our suppliers, run vehicles and leisure centres, empty the bins, support local community groups and charities, and provide a vast range of services that our residents and communities need – now more than ever.” Meanwhile, under the draft budget proposals, council tenants would see a 7.7% increase in rents to try to keep pace with increased costs, and to ensure the necessary investment in repairs and maintenance across the council’s social housing stock. This would mean average weekly social rent increasing by £7.92 from £102.88 to £110.81. For affordable housing, weekly rents would increase by £11.13 from £144.51 to £155.63. Cllr Ward said: “Any decision to put up bills is not one we take lightly, particularly when people are already feeling the squeeze, and we are determined continue to support those most in need.” Babergh District Council provides advice and support to those struggling to pay their bills, with a council tax reduction of up to 100% for residents with the lowest incomes.

I’ve built up a bit of debt and I am panicking. Even though I cut back, Christmas was expensive, my rent has gone up and my paycheque just doesn’t stretch as far as it used to. I’m doing everything I can but it’s not enough - what can I do? First of all, it’s important to know you’re not alone in finding things difficult and, crucially, there’s support available. You say you’ve built up a bit of debt. The first step is to collect all the information you have about your debts, this might include contracts, bills and statements. Next, make a list of your debts and write down the details of each. This could include whom you owe the money to (this person/company is your ‘creditor’); when you first missed a payment; and how much you now owe. You’ll also need to make a note of your account or reference number and what steps the creditor has taken to get the money back, e.g. sending you letters. It might feel overwhelming when you see all of your debts written down - but try not to worry, the important thing is that you're sorting them out. If you’re behind on household bills, prioritise paying your rent or mortgage, plus energy bills and Council Tax first. Not paying these bills has the most serious consequences. You should speak to the person or company you owe money to, to see if there are any manageable steps you can take to start reducing your debt. Once you’ve got these debts under control, you should look at any other debts like credit card or store card debts, payday loans or missed Buy Now Pay Later payments. While you’re looking at the money going out, do remember to consider money that could be coming in. It’s always worth checking if there are any benefits that you’re eligible for, including support with your energy costs and living costs. There’s a benefits calculator, advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase your income, on the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk There’s also emergency support that you may be able to access, such as a food bank or fuel vouchers. You could also contact your local council to see if they can offer support. We know that times are incredibly tough but please remember, you don’t have to face this alone, do contact Citizens Advice to help you find a way February 24 Text.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2024 08:44 Page 1 forward. For more information visit the Citizens Advice website at www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and South Suffolk Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. ‘Grow Your Dough’ to help us enhance care This month sees My WiSH Charity launch a new fundraising challenge, with the aim to raise funds for an activity assistant for elderly patients, many of whom have dementia. Teams will receive a £50 starter donation and are encouraged to ‘run wild’ with fundraising ideas over three months to claim the title of ‘Grow Your Dough Champions’. This intiative would not have been possible without the support of event sponsors Knights Lowe, Suffolk-based chartered accountants and business advisors. Fundraising officer and event organiser, Tanya Fifield, said: “We are excited to run this event where people can get creative and have fun while supporting their local NHS charity.” Grow Your Dough will run from 1st April to 30th June and entry is free. Teams can be businesses, family and friends or it can be an individual challenge. There will be four trophies up for grabs: Most dough raised, Community engagement, Most creative fundraising and Most dedicated team. Tanya added: “£50 could go towards ingredients for a bake sale, or an entry fee for a half marathon, the choice is yours. We want those taking part to enjoy the challenge with their friends or colleagues. “Our supporter Arthur Clarke will be entering the event with his friends and on the other hand, we have Treatt, one of our corporate partners, entering a team. This is why we have the different trophy categories, we want to reward innovation as well as those who raise the best amount.” Tanya extended her thanks to Knights Lowe for sponsoring the event: “An accountant is the perfect partner for this money growing event and we are thrilled to work with them.” Bianca Evans, marketing manager for Knights Lowe said: “Knights Lowe are really excited to be supporting My WiSH with their Grow Your Dough Challenge, we can’t wait to see what all the teams get up to and are looking forward to seeing all the innovative ideas as businesses around the community come together for this incredible cause. A number of our staff here at Knights Lowe have seen first-hand the incredible work My WiSH carry out and we are really proud to be supporting them.” The money raised will allow the charity to provide an activity assistant for ward G4. Ward manager, Rosie Cawston, said: “This role will have a huge impact on our patients, especially those with dementia. Whether it’s playing cards, getting the bay to play bingo, or just sitting and having a chat will be such a valuable asset to the ward. We know this kind of interaction is vital to our older patients to help maintain their cognitive skills while in hospital.” To find out more, or to enter Grow Your Dough, head to the charity’s website, www.mywishcharity.co.uk. Facts And Figures From The Past In February, the tradition of sending Valentine Cards is followed all over the world. When was it introduced? Why is it still so popular? Who was the original Valentine? The origin of St Valentine is shrouded in mystery, however the most widely believed information is that it originated from the Ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia way back the 6th century BC. It was a sexually charged and violent rite that involved the sacrifice of dogs and male goats. This was observed annually from February 13th to the 15th to purify the city and promote good health. It was very bloody, Priests known as the Luperci would have their heads anointed with the sacrificial blood from the knives, they then had their foreheads cleaned with wool soaked in milk. They would then run through the streets with strips of the hide from the dogs and goats, whipping people as they went. It was believed that if women were whipped with a piece of this hide, she would have a safer delivery when giving birth and prevent her from becoming barren. From this there followed a tradition of women placing their names in a large urn in the marketplace, men would then take out a name, escort her to the festival and hopefully would be matched with a suitable future wife. So, from this tradition of finding a lover it has been linked to St Valentine hundreds of years later. Yet again I have been delving into various sources to find mixed information about the real St Valentine Unfortunately, he suffered quite brutal and treatment, and all died for his cause. St Valentine was a Bishop from 3rd Century Rome. and was executed by Emperor Claudius II. This emperor had decided that men were far better soldiers if they were not allowed to marry and have a wife or children. So, he made a decree forcing young men from marrying. Valentine believed this to be wrong, so he secretly married these lovers. Eventually he was discovered, tried, and suffered death by being beheaded. He is also the patron saint of epileptics and beekeepers. He was martyred by Claudius II during his time of persecuting Christians. According to the legend he was in prison for not only marrying lovers but praying for the sick from his prison cell and many were healed. It was said that he fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard. Having been blind from birth she was healed through his prayers. They become friends from her bringing him food; they eventually fell in love. When he knew that he was about to die, he sent her a love letter, signed “From your Valentine.” He was executed on February 14th 270 AD. Valentine was named patron saint on the 5rh March 1664. A recurrent object used to celebrate Valentines Day is an orange; it is quite common to see whole villages or statues decorated with oranges on this feast day. In Quero oranges are blessed and thrown down a slope near the church of San Valentino as a sign of good luck. In Vico del Gargano in Puglia, oranges are used to decorate the city and the statue of St Valentine with a celebratory procession through the town. So, on this St Valentines day maybe a Chocolate orange instead of the usual gifts. I would love to visit these places in Italy, I have added them to my buck Sue Aryes

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre The winter months bring unpredictable weather which makes caring for our ponies challenging. It also means we can’t always use them for our Riding for the Disabled (RDA) sessions. Rarely are sessions cancelled – because I’m here to be used. I’m Ebony, the mechanical horse, situated in a warm room out of the weather. The physical therapy I give is as good as being on one of my real-life friends, and I can provide a variety of paces – walk, trot and canter. But RDA is much more than exercising the body. Our attitude is to get our clients to access and enjoy riding and engaging with the horses to the maximum of their ability. The photo shows Lesley, who uses me to help her recover from a dreadful fall off her own horse. Across the UK over 25,000 people of all ages and abilities ride or carriage drive with one of the 500 RDA groups. And did you know, there are similar groups right across world? At every group, our coaches are trained and qualified to deliver the best possible experience, based on our clients’ needs, ambition or therapeutic goals. Our clients include children and adults with physical and learning disabilities and autism. The difference that riding and being with the horses makes is amazing and often lifechanging. As well as our amazing riders, coaches and stable manager, the Shelley Centre is blessed with many dedicated and hard-working volunteers. They help with the RDA sessions; look after and exercise the ponies during the holidays and weekends; undertake general admin and maintenance tasks around the yard and raise funds to keep the Centre going. If you’d like to join this fantastic and friendly team, why not give the Centre a call and come up and meet us and see how you can help. And of course, you can always help by supporting our fund raising activities or giving us a donation. Please see our website for details. Website: www.shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172
