TESCO VOWS TO FIGHT ON... This was the heading in the EADT after the Planning meeting which refused their application for a supermarket on the Brett Works site. When will they and the Officers at Babergh District Council get the message that the people of Hadleigh will continue to oppose the application? Hadleigh has defeated Tesco at three planning applications and a Secretary of State's Inquiry. These are also defeats for the Babergh Officers who have been trying to push the site for a supermarket long before Tesco appeared on the scene, and still appear to be backing Tesco. Will Tesco appeal? At the time of writing this we do not know, but they can be sure that we, the residents of Hadleigh and surrounding villages, will continue to oppose them. If you were at the meeting on the 18th where the decision was made, you were probably as furious as I was at the way the Planning Officer presented the case. Of course it was a little difficult for him as he had just been brought in by Babergh on a short term contract. He introduced himself as having been a barrister and now a planning consultant, living in Hadleigh ‘at the moment’. It was obvious from the errors that he really did not know Hadleigh. However it was equally obvious that our speakers did. Firstly I must congratulate our Hadleigh Babergh Councillors, Mr Grutchfield
and Mr Riley. Though not on the committee, and therefore not eligible to vote, both put forward strong cases for refusing the application. I wish I had written down Mr Riley’s quotation but it went something like ‘The Officer's report was like a very poor first novel’ a work of fiction. Unfortunately I can’t ask Mr Riley for his actual words as he was supposed to go on holiday two days before the meeting, and left to join his family immediately after it. Thanks Brian for your strong support. Councillor Grandon was the only Hadleigh Councillor who was on the committee and could therefore vote. Councillor Grandon proposed that the application was refused and spoke very strongly about it. Councillor Munson was on holiday but fielded a very strong substitute. This time the Hadleigh Town Council, Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, Hadleigh Society and Hands Off Hadleigh worked together. We submitted objections as a united front, and thanks to the generous financial help from residents and friends, we were able to afford a very strong team of professionals to produce reports and speak for us at the meeting. ...Continued on page 3

Tesco vows to fight on... At the 2011 planning application Hadleigh's own professional, Jonathan Glancey of Benton Street, carried the day for us on the design of the building. Jonathan again spoke very strongly against the new design and the whole application. Professor Hallsworth who has not only worked for government in this country and abroad and who has written some of the national planning legislation, put forth a very strong argument about the effect of supermarkets on the High Street and local retailers. Paul Stinchcombe, Q.C. made it quite clear that the District Plan which identifies the need for a supermarket, is outof-date and approving this application would be outside of the National Planning Policy Framework, which is mandatory, leaving Babergh Council open to legal action. Our team of speakers was led and co-ordinated by Andrew Cann of Cicero Communications. Andrew has worked with Hands Off Hadleigh for over a year now, and it is to Andrew that we owe the greater part of this success. Babergh in 2011 by their behaviour made it quite clear that the submissions by local residents carried no weight and only professional submissions were taken note of. Andrew has worked on numerous multi-million pound projects and his expertise has been essential, hence our being able to field a very strong field of speakers, and knowing how and when to produce the documentation to send to the planning department and the councillors. And how about the level of discussion from the councillors themselves before they voted? While those who were objecting to the application were objecting on the legal planning grounds, some of the arguments left you speechless. One local rural councillor, who seconded the proposal to give permission to Tesco, used amongst her arguments that the Tesco car park would make it easier to take her dog to the vets and that we needed to keep the vets and G.P.s' surgery in town. Personally I did not know that Tesco had taken over vets and G.P.s (Yet!). One amusing speaker was Mr Robeson whose company has been the Tesco planning consultant from the beginning. He obviously did not like the arrival of Morissons, but referred to them throughout his speech as the interlopers. One good piece of information about Babergh is that their Economic Development Department recommended opposing the application on the very same grounds that we are arguing, i.e. there is not enough money to support three supermarkets and the High Street Shops, and therefore the Tesco application would seriously damage the vitality and viability of the High Street. Well done them!! Let us hope that we will be able to stop filling our Community News with Tesco stories and let us make sure that we keep supporting our High Street, for we know that if we don’t use it we will surely lose it. I would thank everybody who has put so much time and effort into fighting this development. Jan Byrne P.S. I wrote the above the day after the Tesco planning meeting, just in time to catch the Community News deadline. Having just read this mornings E.A.D.T. where Simon Barrett, vice-chairman of Babergh District Council’s strategy committee and lead member of economic development, states that the Tesco store rejection could cost ratepayers £250,000. He states “Tesco is certain to appeal against this result and it will cost Babergh around £250,000 to defend its decision when it goes to a public inquiry. (I understand from our consultant that an appeal at this level should not cost more than about £30,000). Tesco went to a public inquiry with their first refusal in 2000 and lost, in 2011 they did not appeal so he can not be ‘certain’ that Tesco will appeal this time. The Councillors who bravely voted against the Tesco application took into account the fact that there is not enough money coming into Hadleigh to support three supermarkets and a High Street. Mr Barrett should therefore be considering whether £250,000 spent on a appeal that might or might not be won by Tesco is more important than the loss to the economy of Hadleigh by the closure of locally owned businesses and their local suppliers, money that comes into Hadleigh and stays here.

John Chisnall 16 May 1962 - 18 August 2013 Our family would sincerely like to thank all relatives and friends for their kindness, sympathy, cards and letters of condolences received following the sad loss of John. We were overwhelmed with the attendance at the funeral and the generous donations of currently over ÂŁ2000 which has already been gratefully received for Factor 50 (now Melanoma UK) which is a patient advocacy group, offering vital support to melanoma patients, families and carers. We appreciate the wonderful support we have received from so many people, including the Doctors and District Nurses at the Health Centre and for the professional service received from Kingsbury and Saunders. John was very passionate about Hadleigh Hares and we are so proud to learn from the club, that their annual road running race on the 24 November 2013 will be in memory of him. We are deeply moved to be informed of this and thank the club for this incredible honour. We shall miss John more than words can say, but it is a comfort to us knowing that so many people care and have supported us through this very difficult time. Thank you all once again, all the family of the late John Chisnall

Suffolk Historic Churches Trust 32nd Sponsored Cycle Ride It was a wet and dreary morning on Saturday 14th September, but this did nothing to dampen the spirits of some Children and Parents of Whatfield to take part in the 32nd Annual Bike Ride, one of the Dads took part in the very first event as a young lad in 1982. They all met at 9.30am at St Margarets Church in Whatfield for a group picture and then it was off on bikes with one parent running alongside to Whatfield URC and Whatfield Salvation Army where they were a welcome sight. After a slight bike repair they all then headed off to Elmsett visiting the Methodist Church and then St Peters Church (where drinks and biscuits were provided), upon their return journey there was of course a quick stop at the local shop for essential treats!! All in all the Children raised nearly £200 between them 50% of which is given to the Churches Trust and the remainder donated to a Church of your choice. This is an event which is fun for all the family and should you wish to take part next year keep an eye out at your local church or school for the resident coordinator in late August early September 2014 or visit the website http://shct.org.uk/ for more information. Building on the success of their existing dementia café at Sue Ryder – The Chantry in Ipswich, Sue Ryder have launched a new Synergy Café in Hadleigh: - every Thursday at the Ansell Centre, from 11am to 3pm The charity is encouraging people to join the Sue Ryder staff at an engagement event organised in each area to learn more about the service and what is on offer; The aim of Synergy Café is to bring together people affected by dementia and their family carers, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. As well as being a safe and comfortable environment for people with dementia and their family and friends to relax in, or take part in an enjoyable activity, Synergy Café aims to provide education, information and practical advice. A small team of staff experienced in dementia, alongside trained volunteers, will facilitate the café. The cafe is open for all people living with dementia to attend with their families and carers. Health and social care professionals supporting people with dementia are also welcome and Sue Ryder work alongside partnership organisations, including Suffolk Family Carers, Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK Suffolk to deliver the information programme at the café. Attendance to the cafe sessions is free with optional food and refreshments for purchase. Tracey Plested, community services manager at Sue Ryder – the Chantry in Ipswich, said “There is a significant challenge in Suffolk to meet the needs of families affected by dementia. It is important that people and their carers have access to opportunities that enable them to spend quality time together outside of the family home. We are delighted that we are able to help the community by offering this additional form of support”. A report from the Alzheimer’s society also highlights how vital it is that access to support and care services is expanded to ensure people with dementia are able to maintain their independence and a good quality of life. 59% of carers and people with dementia surveyed believe being active in the community is very important. Tracey added “Living with dementia has a considerable impact on a person’s health, social life and family life. As a person’s health deteriorates they gradually lose their independence. Unable to take part in everyday social activities, people become isolated from the community, resulting in many people being forced into residential care homes early. With support services for local communities like Synergy café in place, this can be avoided and people can live at home for longer.” The service has been made possible through funding from an Innovations Grant. For more information about attending Synergy Café, please contact Tracey Plested on 01473 295200 or email tracey.plested@sueryder.org

Ipswich and Suffolk Credit Union Information Drop In The Ipswich and Suffolk Credit Union will be holding an information session in Hadleigh Main Library on FRIDAY OCTOBER 18TH 11-3pm. IPSU's Sally Chicken will be available to give information and assistance in filling in joining packs to interested people from Hadleigh and around South Suffolk. In the run up to Christmas, some people will be worried about how they are going to afford things and how to manage their money over a pretty difficult time. This is a time when legal Loansharks start to feel like the only answer to a financial crisis. The Credit Union is an ethical, co-operative organisation which offers many of the traditional High Street banking services, to people who may find that they cannot access bank accounts and loans because of their financial or housing status. The ISCU can help you manage your money in savings and loan accounts, and arrange standing orders from your account for bills and outgoings, so that you do not have a difficult decision on payday, about how to prioritise your cash. There is no pressure to join, they will be there mainly to offer information. The ISCU are not financial advisers, and everything is open and will be explained clearly before any commitment is made. If you are already interested, please come equipped with your identification documents etc, contact the Credit Union number below for details of these documents. GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard at sea: Kefalonia I made mention in my last column of the sudden death of Rodney Burtt and along with hundreds of you, I joined a very fitting celebration of his at St Mary’s life Hadleigh. The following day was sadly the funeral of John Chisnall who many of you will know had developed his father’s business to a successful building company in Hadleigh. I had worked with John on various matters. John was only a young man and it was terribly sad indeed that in spite of the many sports that he undertook that he should have been struck by fatal illness. My sincere sympathies are with John’s mother and father Heather and Maitland Chisnall and his family. St Mary’s in Hadleigh was packed on both occasions. It struck me as a great pity that the Church has seen fit to get rid of many of its pews and replace them with lounge suites and a snooker table. To my mind the Church looked a mess. What a pity. Please do approach me with all your Conveyancing needs and take advantage of the 28 years of qualified property experience that I can offer – longer than any other property professional in Hadleigh. I always advise my letting Landlord clients not to take a deposit in view of the many complications that can arise if that deposit is not dealt with properly. A case this year called Superstrike has heightened those difficulties to the extent that a Landlord could end up in a position whereby the ability to recover possession could be compromised. I had a lovely time during the Summer on holiday at a Villa in Kefalonia. I know that the island is the destination of choice for a number of my readers and in particular the Lord of the Manor of Polstead! As I was limited to a charter flight, my chauffeur Christof motored over a week earlier with the trunks, provisions and household staff Frank and Maria. I had glorious weather and was able to sit by an infinity pool in peaceful surroundings gazing out to sea with only the gong-gong of goats’ bells to break the silence. The picture shows me in a motor launch that we took to sea one day. In spite of being able to swim off the vessel in soft and warm waters in the morning, the winds got up in the afternoon and I had to hang on to a rope to stay on board. My hat was left to the depths of the Ionian Sea. As my pen was poised to sign off, dear readers, news reaches me that the Tesco application has been rejected. Undoubtedly there is much fighting still to come. I don’t think that the people of Hadleigh want or need another supermarket and perhaps we should write to the Chairman of Tesco to tell him. There was much plaintive mewing this morning, as I scampered down the garden path at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare. Once again, we are inundated with kittens, due to an influx of unspayed cats. Please tell all your human friends to have their pets neutered. It is the only way to prevent more unwanted cats and dogs and the animals are likely to live longer, healthier lives. If you care about animals and have a spare morning each week, perhaps you would like to join our team of volunteers but be warned - it is not all cuddly fluffy bundles! Regular jobs include feeding, cleaning out kennels and catteries and dog walking, come rain or shine. Welly boots and a sense of humour are an advantage! If you prefer to keep your hands clean, we also need more fundraisers on an occasional basis. Leave a message on 01787 210888 if you can help in any way. Talking of fundraising, the girls are preparing for a Jumble Sale at Boxford Village Hall on 12th October, from midday to 4pm. I'm off to help them because I don't think they can manage without some help from me, Kenny (The Boss) Chihuahua.

Popular Craft Fair returns! We are very pleased to announce that 'Simply events' is back at Hadleigh Town Hall for an 'Autumn craft fair' on Saturday 12th October. The craft fair follows a very successful, albeit snowy, 'Easter craft fair' back in March. 'The Autumn craft fair' is fully booked with an inspirational array of crafters exhibiting their hand-crafted produce. Event organiser, Kylie Sparkes says “we are really looking forward to visiting Hadleigh again, the fair at Easter was a great success even though the weather was terrible. The crafters enthusiasm still remained high and visitor numbers were surprisingly good considering the snowy conditions. The craft fair will have a selection of 30 crafters on hand to welcome you, chat with you and give advice on their crafts. Amongst the crafters we have 'The Mad Owl Company' who produce owl shaped doorstops and owl themed pin cushions, Kindle covers, needle cases and much more. We also have 'Really Homemade' who produce orange and apple scented dried garlands, I'm sure this will give a very festive aroma to the Grand Hall. 'Carola Smedjebacka Designs' will be exhibiting their kiln formed glass, fused and slumped/draped plates, bowls, tealight holders and Christmas decorations. There will also be Jewellery made by several different makers on offer, 'Rothery Textiles' will be showing their hand printed textiles and 'Gradience Yarns' with their hand dyed yarns to get you in an Autumnal mood. Please come along and support your very talented local crafters at the Town Hall this October, you maybe looking for that special original gift idea or a new piece for your home that you will be sure to find amongst the makers at the 'Autumn craft fair'. If you would like more information on the 'Autumn craft fair', future events or you are a crafter wanting to hold a stall at a future event then please have a look at www.simplyevents.me or email me info@simplyevents.me
Plant Giveaway in Sudbury Following on from our recent success achieving Gold in the Anglia in Bloom competition, we will shortly be removing our beautiful hanging baskets. They have made a magnificent show in our town centre this year. However to avoid the contents of the baskets going to landfill we are planning to have a big plant giveaway on our market day Thursday 3rd October. There are many large begonia corms that with a little bit of ‘tlc’ will provide a lovely show in anyone’s garden next year. Our horticultural contractor, Mr Gary Flowers (aptly named!), will park his vehicle outside the Town Hall, Market Hill, Sudbury from 9am on 3rd October and our apprentice community wardens will be on hand to help residents and visitors select their plants. It would be helpful if people could bring their own bags, however plastic bags will be provided. Sudbury Town Council, Town Hall, Sudbury CO10 1TL 01787 372331

Saturday 12th October 2013 at Museum of East Anglian Life This chance to witness footage of East Anglian agriculture at work is thanks to two brothers from Saffron Walden who are helping to keep alive the sights & sounds of farming before today’s modern tractors were available. From the 1970’s to the present day, David & Paul Cornwell have been filming traction engines demonstrating at various shows and events held around East Anglia. For your opportunity to relive these times, the Friends of the Museum of East Anglian Life have organised a Film Night – ‘Sights & Sounds of Yesteryear, Steam in East Anglia’ -showing a selection of their films. This event will take place at The Museum of East Anglian Life; we are delighted that this unique insight into days gone by is coming here to the museum whilst surrounded by buildings, artefacts and animals that are all an important part of East Anglian heritage and our own collection of steam engines and agricultural machinery. The evening starts at 7pm and Tickets are available from the Tourist Information Centre, Stowmarket, at £7.50 and include a ploughman’s supper. A real ale bar will be available for refreshments. Food & Farm for Fidelis There was a record turn out of Lunch Bunchers last month which was surprising given the time of the year and members’ holidays and baby-sitting duties. This time the foodies combined lunching with some retail therapy in and around Needham Market. The Angel Tea Room on the High Street was the focus of their dining activities and it was in their quaint ‘compact’ room upstairs that freshly prepared meals were enjoyed by all. This room doubles as a Bistro in the evenings. Lunch time fare ranged from baguettes and jacket potatoes to home made quiche and crispy salads. Service was friendly and well paced so that diners had time to chat but not time to feel faint. Once the group had eaten they went their separate ways to explore the many interesting fuddly shops in the neighbourhood or move on to the Alder Carr Farm complex of small retail outlets. Throughout the meal there was a great deal of serious and light hearted discussion about worldly and local events including the impending arrival of the Fidelis Recipe Book ‘Just Desserts’ which will go on sale after its launch on 15th October. Halloween is coming up at the end of the month as well as bonfire night at the beginning of November; please consider others on both of these nights and all can have a good time. Suffolk Police are urging you to consider the effect your actions may have on others this Halloween and Bonfire Night – and to respect those may not want to take part in the festivities. Traditionally both Halloween and Bonfire nights are busy for police with a large number of calls during the end of October and beginning of November relating to anti-social behaviour by a minority who take trick or treating too far and firework-related incidents. We want people to enjoy their Halloween and Bonfire night celebrations but we also want those taking part to have consideration for others. There is a need for everyone taking part to behave responsibly. We would ask parents to ensure they supervise their children, for their own safety and to ensure they do not call at addresses where the occupants do not want to take part, and that anyone trick or treating only visits homes where they know the residents. Most residents that do like to take part normally have some form of Halloween gimmick outside their property. Halloween and Bonfire night can be genuinely scary for many older residents - please don’t cause them any unnecessary distress. There is a line between high spirits and anti- social behaviour and we are well aware there are small minorities who will ignore our appeals and we will be out trying to cause trouble. A series of posters has been produced which address the issues surrounding Halloween. One is designed for those who do not want to take part while another asks parents if they would normally let their children call on a stranger’s home unsupervised. These posters will be put up around the county and are being widely distributed to schools and businesses, (look out for these nearer the time in your local shops, also at Hadleigh police station). Heating Oil Theft Advice The theft of heating and diesel oil has been a problem for many years and the police have noticed an increase in this type of crime in rural areas. These tanks can contain many thousands of pounds worth of oil and it therefore makes very good sense to take a few precautions to protect such a valuable commodity. Check with your insurance provider that you are not only insured for fuel thefts, but also any oil seepages, either through wear and tear or deliberately caused by an offender. The cost of any resulting environmental clean-up could prove expensive. The position of the tank can have a significant effect on how hard a target it is in the eyes of a thief. If the tank is within good view of the house, then the thief may consider the risk of being seen too high. If the tank is close to a road, path, drive or alleyway then it will be a far easier target. Hiding the tank behind the garage, shed or some other type of outbuilding is fairly commonplace but, on the other hand, it could help to conceal the thief. A thief will usually come equipped with a limited range of tools to attack your tank so it’s worth spending a little more on good quality locks. Closed shackle padlocks are best as they offer most resistance to the most popular of burglar tools, namely the bolt cropper. Due to their design, closed shackle padlocks have very little of the metal hoop (shackle) exposed and bolt croppers cannot get a good grip. Another recent security measure available is a padlock with a built-in alarm, which activates, when tampered, at up to 110 decibels. Remote electronic oil level gauges are now available, which will set off an audible alarm if the oil level in the tank suddenly falls in fuel level. These gauges are sited within the house to warn of any potential problem. Security lights can have a very positive effect and make any property a much harder target for thieves. It is not always necessary to floodlight the area with high power beams, as a more subtle level of lighting may be all that is needed. Low energy ‘dusk ‘til dawn’ lights positioned close to the tank should, in most cases, provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity. Thieves will not want to force their way through or over a prickly hedge. The smallest trace of blood or shred of ripped clothing could help the police identify the offender. Some effective natural planting includes: Berberis x Stenopylla Crataegus Monogvna (Hawthorn) Ilex Aquifolium (Holly) Pyracantha (Firethorn) Rosa Rugosa. A trellis can be decorated with defensive planting. Suffolk Police are asking everybody to look out for any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area following a delivery of heating oil and to report this to Police as soon as possible. Plum and Cob Nut Day at Orchard Barn We celebrated our Plum Day for the second year on 17 August, also incorporating Cob Nuts – we had many varieties of plums and several of cob nuts (yes, there is more than one type of cob nut!). We welcomed around 70 visitors, some for the first time and, as well as showing them what we have achieved so far at Orchard Barn, they were able to watch Monica Askay, Food Historian, prepare some delicious plum dishes, and sample the finished products. Dr Paul Read of Suffolk Traditional Orchards Group was again on hand to answer questions about fruit and nuts. We were also very proud to have our new tool shed officially opened by Chris Knock, chairman of Battisford Parish Council, and Heather Guite, one of the trainees who helped in the reconstruction of the tool shed. The door was made by our trainees, under the instruction of Tom Castell, from ash boards that we had milled in Suffolk Wildlife Trust woods in Bradfield. The photo shows them pulling the ribbon, in true ecostyle, so that it can be re-used on another occasion. Visitors were also able to see our newly completed hand-cleft gates and the freshly laid paved entranceway on their way in, and then admire our new pizza oven, constructed on our ‘Making and Using Cob’ workshop. We are continuing our Wednesday volunteer workdays, with occasional Saturdays as well. If you are interested in doing practical work in a beautiful environment do get on touch, even if you have no previous experience of conservation work. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline It only seems like yesterday that we said goodbye to the group of children that were with us in the summer but already we must look to preparations for the visit of 2014. Host parents and helpers wanted to Host one or two children from 6th July to 3rd August 2014. All that is needed is a mattress to sleep on and a loving home with people who care. Age and financial circumstances are immaterial. Age is not a barrier and applications from single people will be considered, families may or may not still have their own children at home. Hosts are able to follow their own occupation or other interests as the children meet daily from 8.30 to 4.30 Monday to Friday at our centre in Needham Market and there are always other supporters on hand to help outside those times if needed. Families and other supporters that cannot Host are on hand to provide assistance to hosting families or during activities and day trips. Host families welcome these children into their own homes as part of their family and the Link provide as much help and support as possible. The children are not sick but you can help improve their health with this respite visit as all visiting children still live in areas affected by the aftermath of the Chernobyl Disaster. If you would like further information about becoming a host parent or helper please get in touch, information is free and without obligation. Shoe box appeal Would you like to send a shoe box/Christmas gift to a child who will not receive any presents this year? Many people send shoe boxes around the world through charitable organisations. Despite best efforts many of these boxes do not receive their intended destinations or contents are taken before they do. CCLL is not an Aid Charity so as a national organisation we do not do this. However, we do try and see if we can get a present sent to the children of Chernobyl who have been to Suffolk on a group visit. You would receive a photograph and details of the child you were supporting and although you do have to bear the direct cost of postage you do have the satisfaction of knowing exactly who your gift is going to and that they will definitely go only to them. For further details on hosting or the shoebox appeal can be obtained fromElizabeth Parker 01449 760343 07771 550868 enquiries@ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk

Hospice Care Week runs from 7th – 13th October this year and is a national campaign to help raise awareness and celebrate the work of local Hospices, like St Elizabeth Hospice, which improve the lives of local people living with a progressive illness. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Well!! I turn my back for a short while (Actually, I was on my summer shutdown) and that Bob sneaks in and takes over and writes my September Blog! In promoting our Sponsor a Pony scheme, a worthy cause, he actually had the cheek to send off a photo of himself to be published along side the Blog no doubt touting for sponsorship for himself: must admit, it was a good photo and I hope you liked it? There will be retribution!! That aside, as I power up I notice that it has been anything but quiet at The Centre. Our grateful thanks go to Alan Grego and his team of helpers who applied a coating of wood preservative to all of the buildings, with the supplier of the preservative, Kent Blaxill, helping greatly in keeping our costs to a minimum: at least The Centre will now be well protected against the coming winter. With the sensitive nature of our work, we must always ensure that we have up-todate equipment for our Riders so another thank you, this time to The Suffolk Community Foundation, who gave us a grant for £1532.32, which has allowed us to go out and buy hats, tack and safety equipment to add to or replace that which is past it’s sell by date. Our maintenance team have also been busy cleaning up and trimming back vegetation from the fences and in general making the place look tidy. By the time you read this we will be well and truly back into our routines but, I have to report that we still have a waiting list of 12 potential Riders and therefore need additional Helpers during the week so that we can offer them a place. Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers October 2013 Walk Our walk this Month will be on Saturday October 12th. We will travel by bus to Sudbury, leaving Hadleigh Bus Station (Coop side) at 9.50am. This will be a circular walk via Chilton, Great Waldingfield, Acton, Cuckoo Tye, Long Melford, Liston, and Borley. We will return to Hadleigh by bus leaving Sudbury Bus Station at 3pm., and arriving back at 3.30pm. The walk is 10miles in length, and is suitable for most walkers, older children, and dogs. There are some lovely views on this walk especially around Long Melford, and along the Stour Valley, we think it will be well worth the effort. Strong shoes or walking boots should be worn as some of the paths are rough and wet in places. Further details of this walk, or the other activities of the Footpath Volunteers may be obtained from David Warner (Hadleighs Footpath Warden) on 07749 732941, or E.mail: david.warner@stmaryshad.co.uk

Hadleigh U3A’s September meeting featured a lively talk by Eve Regulus about Harrods of Knightsbridge, based on her experiences over ten years as an events organizer for Mohammed Al- Fayed. (We were, in fact, expecting a talk by her husband Paul on his experiences as a policeman, but an accident at home left him with a broken foot, and unable to come. Eve stepped in at the last minute, and we are very grateful) Harrods history proved to be fascinating, with origins back in 1824, when Charles Henry Harrod, at the age of 25, opened a drapery store in Southwark. As business expanded into groceries, he moved on into a succession of larger premises, and a small shop on the present site in Knightsbridge, bought in 1851. This last venture flourished under the hand of his son Charles Digby Harrod, but a disastrous fire destroyed the store just before Christmas in 1883. Nevertheless, he still managed to fulfil his Christmas orders, and still made a healthy profit. A new shop was soon built, and steadily grew to take over adjoining premises, as more and more retail lines were developed. Britain’s first escalator was added in 1898 - passengers were offered a glass of brandy to steady their nerves as they stepped off at their chosen floors. The building was completed in its present landmark form in 1905. Today there are more than 330 departments within what is now the biggest store in Europe, with a million square feet of retail space spread over 6 floors, on a 5 acre site. It has become a major tourist attraction, and its seasonal Christmas departments and the Food Halls are world famous. The store fully lives up to it’s motto of “All things to all people, everywhere” The Al-Fayed brothers took over the business in 1985. The tradition of staff being very smartly presented continues, particularly in the hairdressing and beauty departments, where Mohammed regularly checked the girls’ appearances. The famous green shopping bags are part of the house theme which includes the packaging of products throughout the store, and a sense of theatre is created in many areas to enhance the shopping experience. More controversially, Mohammed had two memorials erected in the building in memory of the engagement of his son Dodi to Princess Diana, and the death of both in the car crash in Paris. His battles to apportion blame for the crash on the British establishment were frustrated, as were his long-continued attempts to acquire a British passport. These events eventually led to him tearing-up Harrods priceless Royal Warrants in disgust. Other controversies included his long-term battles with his arch-enemy Tiny Rowlands, who sought to buy the store, and the erection of a very mediocre memorial to Michael Jackson at Fulham F.C’s stadium, to the scorn of the football fans. Never to be realized was his plan to eventually have his embalmed body placed in the clock tower of the Harrods building. The Al-Fayed era ended in 2010 with the sudden sale of Harrods to the Qataris, for a reported £1.5 billion.
Pause for Thought I recently noticed a most brilliant rainbow low in the sky. I quickly took a photo and as I checked the picture I noticed a second rainbow, an amazing double shining brightly. This made me think about how God used a rainbow. The first mention of a rainbow in the Bible is when Noah, his family and the animals were saved from the flood. God used it as a symbol of His promises. We can always rely on God to keep His many promises. He promised there would always be a harvest, a promise kept as we’ve just had an amazing harvest of fruit, vegetables and grain. God promised to always be there for us a promise kept as He’s still with us today. God also promised us to send us His son Jesus to make a way for us to be with Him forever. The Bible says ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life’ John 3:16. So in this changing and unreliable world rely on God, He always keeps His promises. The rainbow reminds us of this. Lydia Ball

See behind the scenes at St Peter’s Sudbury The church, redundant now for over 30 years and in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust is managed locally by the Friends of St Peter's. Of the 400 churches in the care of the Trust, St Peter's is the second most used in the whole of the UK. A fact overlooked by Fiona Bruce on her recent visit! On Monday 28th October the church will be open from 10am. During the day there will be artists at work, a circus skills workshop, buskers and the chance to talk to members of the Friends team and learn more about this unique local facility. The day's activities end at about 5pm with a display by talented local group Fireflow. In the evening at 7pm, following a session of bell ringing by the Sudbury Guild of Bell Ringers, there will be a short reception attended by the mayor of Sudbury and Dr Ronald Blythe, the new president of the Friends. There will be wine and refreshments and the whole day is free of charge. All are welcome but if you are coming for the evening session please contact Heather Clayton at Heatherclayton6@gmail.com
“In the Swim” Glenn Abbassi, Sarah Southgate and Trudy Crowfoot, regular early morning swimmers at Hadleigh Pool, are putting their best feet forward, in a manner of speaking, aspiring to swim the Channel! They will achieve this by completing 22 miles at the pool by the 1st December - by which time Glenn will have reached the age of 70 - definitely not an event for celebration, although accomplishment of the swim will be. The object is to raise money for Aspire, a charity committed to helping those with spinal injuries to live as independent a life as possible. Every 8 hours, someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury - over 1,000 people every year. A spinal cord injury changes everything. Aspire professionals visit patients in hospital to give support with everything from claiming benefits to getting back to work, to providing temporary accommodation while their home may be adapted or they need a new home, or ensuring a suitable wheelchair is provided. Glenn, Sarah and Trudy are each hoping to raise about £200, and would welcome donations in cash or cheques left for them at the pool. They each have sponsorship forms for those who may prefer to support them by that method. Unfortunately they are unable to leave the forms at the pool. All donations will be gratefully acknowledged. Glenn Abbassi

Library Link Congratulations to all children who took part in our Summer Reading Challenge. We had a record number of finishers this year with 164 completing the challenge by reading six books over the summer holiday. We would like to say a special thank you to our team of volunteers who helped administer the challenge. In addition, thank you to Councillor Brian Riley for kindly presenting the certificates. If you missed our presentation you can still collect your certificate and medal from the library. In conjunction with The Idler Bookshop, we’re delighted to announce that local crime writer Pauline Manders will be at the library from 10.30am on Saturday 12th October. Pauline will be signing copies of her two novels Utterly Explosive and Utterly Fuelled. Utterly Explosive is centred on three apprentice carpenters from a fictional Utterly Academy in Stowmarket. Placed in carpentry firms in Needham Market, and close to Wattisham, they rapidly find themselves embroiled in murder and home grown terrorist activities in tranquil Suffolk countryside. Utterly Fuelled follows the same characters in illegal fuel gangs, murder, stray bullets and macabre discoveries. Both books are available to reserve on suffolklibraries.co.uk Local children’s author and teacher Katherine Eccles Horn will be signing her new book ‘Dogs Can’t Fly’ on Saturday 19th October from 11.00am. In ‘Dogs can’t Fly’ Blink is not a dog but a small mischievous purple dragon. Only Danny can see what Blink is, but Danny is a scruffy 11 year old with a reputation for lying, so who would believe him if he told them? To place a reservation visit suffolklibraries.co.uk or visit the library. We’re planning a Big Draw event on Saturday 26th October from 11am – 1.00pm. October is Big Draw month in fifteen countries, and over 200,000 people take part every year. These events are for those who love to draw, and those who think they can't. Since its launch in 2000, The Big Draw has successfully supported the Campaign for Drawing’s aims by encouraging everyone to draw. Big Draw events highlight the power of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action. For more information visit www.campaignfordrawing.org We have a host of activities for the young and not so young. We have a Sunday family craft activity from 10.30am; a chance to get creative. October’s craft theme is autumn. We also provide two Bookstart sessions each week, Tot Rock every Wednesday 2.00pm-2.30pm and Babybounce session every Thursday 10.00am-10.30am. The not so young can enjoy a good chat over a cup of tea at our Toptime group for the over 55s every Wednesday 10.30am12.00pm. Forthcoming activities will be advertised in the library. Our Hadleigh Library Friends Group is now registered and is looking for new members to bring fresh ideas to your local library. Our Friends group has been set up to encourage community involvement and an opportunity to show tangible support for their library. If you’re interested in becoming a Friend please see a member of staff. On Monday 4th November Lesley Dolphin’s radio virtual book group will be discussing The Death of Lucy Kyte by Nicola Upson. Join Lesley from 2pm – 2.40pm on BBC Radio Suffolk. Massage for busy diaries Why do people not indulge in therapies such as massage? Perhaps they feel it is too difficult to fit around their active lives and busy diaries. To further the level of convenience offered, visiting therapist Kevin Willmott, who has been treating IP7/CO10 clients for many years, is now privileged to offer an alternative for people who prefer not to have a home massage. Daytime Tuesday appointments are now available in Hadleigh at the Natural Health Centre of natural healthcare practitioner and registered Osteomyologist Alexander Dent. For those clients who want the ultimate in flexibility, Kevin’s mobile service continues on most days and evenings, with next-day (and sometimes sameday) appointments often available. Massage isn’t just for sporty people, it’s for anyone; from the actively retired to people who spend hours driving or hunched over a screen, and those who work in hectic, stressful environments. While the therapy is no substitute for medical attention or the targeted musculoskeletal programme of an Osteopath or Physiotherapist, recipients do report invigoration of tired muscles. Massage also aids the removal of toxins, stimulates blood flow and promotes a general feeling of relaxation and wellbeing - and that’s most welcome in today’s busy world. Kersey Mill Newsletter There have been quite a number of visitors to the mill this month all eager to see the restoration work in progress and to reminisce of days gone by. There was another special guest at the Mill this month with the arrival of Diana McLusky and her husband who both lived in the area before moving abroad. They now live in Washington, USA. Diana was keen to see the mill where her great grandmother’s daughter Ellen lived and sadly died at the early age of just fifteen. She had visited the grave on occasions with her grandmother, the sister of Ellen yet had never been to the mill where the accident Diana outside the happened. One winter evening as the mill was working waterwheel shed to grind an urgent order of wheat for the baker in during her visit on Hadleigh there was a flour powder explosion resulting September 5th. in young Ellen suffering terrible burns and dying within minutes of being hit by the fire ball that engulfed the ground floor of the mill. No one else was injured which was a miracle. A small iron cross – possible made by at the iron foundry in Hadleigh or Long Melford is the only reminder of the death of Ellen. In the grave yard are other members of the Bradbrook family who worked at Kersey Mill and at many of the others in the area before steam power took over and the mills were built in the larger towns and cities where labour was cheap. During their visit they toured the mill and surrounding land before moving onto the church to see the graves of Diana’s ancestors. Before they did they made a generous donation to buy one of the wooded replacement teeth for the mill stone gears. They also saw the work being carried out by Paul Cuthbert, Bill Griffiths and a happy band of volunteers on the sluice gate and the water wheel more of which we will feature in next Diana at the graveside of month’s newsletter. Ellen and other Bradbrook Next month we explore the workings on the in Kersey Church mill and the restoration being carried out in a sensitive way to preserve the spirit of place. There will also be details of a fund raising Santa Claus and his workshop experience due to be held leading up to Christmas to delight the children. Thank you for reading and look forward to receiving more of your many emails and letters about times at the mill. Allan Scott-Davies

One Stop Buy For Charity Tempting folks to part with their hard earned money is the ultimate challenge for traders and charities alike. The ladies of Country Threads’ craft group have taken up the challenge on behalf of St Elizabeth Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support . They are planning a craft extravaganza which even those with the longest pockets will find hard to resist. If it’s variety and choice you’re looking for, there will be stalls with jewellery, books, toys, and hand crafted gifts. If price is your priority; entry is FREE, all new items will be affordable, there is a white elephant stall and a chance to win a raffle prize. Foodies will also get a look in with a glut of delicious home made cakes and fresh produce plus an opportunity to enjoy a bowl of soup and a roll (£2.50) or tea, coffee and a piece of cake(£1.50). Visitors can also shop early for Christmas as, amongst the carefully hand crafted merchandise, there will be cards, unusual decorations and some exquisite unique cross stitch pictures from various parts of the world. Green and eco punters can take comfort in the knowledge that many of the goods have been created from attractive, re-cycled material and any unsold items will go to the Hospice Shop. Why not come along to the Ansell Rooms on Friday 25th October between 10 am and 3 pm and see what these gifted, talented ladies have been making throughout the year? For these two invaluable charities you only need to spend a little to help a lot. For more info Mavis Gordon 01473 824 398

Do you want to make a positive difference in the lives of young people? If so, you may be interested in becoming a Mentor with the XL-Mentoring scheme soon to be launched by The Porch Project. XL-Mentoring will help young people who are struggling by providing a trusted adult Mentor who can encourage, support, guide and be a positive role model for their Mentee. In order to launch this, we need Mentors - ordinary people from the local community who can spend some time each week to listen to and support a young person. All Mentors will be given training and support. If you are interested in applying to be a Mentor, or would like to find out more, please email Lisa Gordon at Youthworker1@porchproject.co.uk For other volunteering opportunities at The Porch Project, please contact Craig Hutton at youthworkco@porchproject.co.uk
The Hadleigh Thrift Shop Limited In last month's issue we omitted to put a heading to our newsletter, so we are repeating it this month, with a few minor changes and some additions. Thank you so much for the wonderful support we are still getting. There are now at least 35 volunteers involved in the shop who give of their time on a regular basis - grateful thanks go to all of them as well. Also we are pleased to welcome young people doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award. They are always polite and useful when working in the shop - they are a credit to their parents and their school. Customers come from as far away as Chelmsford, Clacton, Felixstowe, etc., and people are also pleased to know that even our annual rent goes to a charity - The Ormiston Children's Trust, which is a local charity. Black Shuck Motorcycle Club On the first weekend in August for the third year we held our annual rally at the Layham Road Sports Ground. This year was a great success with nearly 300 guests turning up, many travelling hundreds of miles from Cornwall, Scotland, Wales, Germany and Holland. This meant that a total of £1,000 was raised and will be shared between our two charities for this year The Lighthouse Appeal and Mencap both in Ipswich. It is unusual for rallies to be held so close to a town and many rally goers commented on how nice it is to be able to walk into town to shop, get a take away or visit a local pub and all said how friendly and welcoming every one was. So thanks to everyone, but special thanks to Hadleigh Town Council, Hadleigh Scouts (incidentally do you know what a great hire venue they have), and All Seasons Marquees. Thanks also to Hadleigh Thrift Shop, KLH Architects and M. W. Partridges who helped with sponsorship or raffle prizes. Special thanks must go to Paul at the George and his sidekick Andy for their invaluable help and finally to Matt and James for their help and patience. See you all next year! Black Shuck M.C.C.

The Museum of East Anglian Life Launches Sponsorship Appeal for Iconic Building The Museum of East Anglian Life is looking for donations from its community of supporters, including staff, volunteers, season ticket holders and regular visitors, to help restore an iconic Suffolk landmark, Eastbridge Windpump. The windpump was rebuilt at The Museum of East Anglian Life between 1978 and 1980 and has become a familiar feature on the Mid-Suffolk landscape. However, it is now in urgent need of refurbishment. Replacement and painting of the timber smock and cap has begun, but replacement parts need to be manufactured for the sails. Director Tony Butler explained, “The Museum cares for over 20 historic buildings and we have a rolling programme of maintenance. This time the windpump is in extensive need of repair having been in our wet meadows for nearly 35 years. This is a great opportunity for people to demonstrate their support for the museum and make new history for this wonderful East Anglian building. By sponsoring a shutter or a lever, through say a £10 donation, they would be helping enormously”. The mill has “Patent Sails”, which were designed by Norfolk engineer William Cubitt in 1807. Each sail has 168 shutters which are linked by a series of levers to a weighted chain wheel that allows the shutters to open and close simultaneously. The levers are to be specially cast by local foundry, East Coast Castings of Watton, Norfolk. The Museum is offering supporters the opportunity to help the preservation of the windpump by sponsoring a shutter or lever. Their support will be acknowledged on a plaque bearing their name at the site of the windpump. Anyone wishing to make a donation to this project should send a cheque payable to ‘The Museum of East Anglian Life’, along with their name, address and email address, to: EastBridge Windpump Appeal, The Museum of East Anglian Life, Stowmarket, IP14 1DL

Save East House! For many years East House has been closed and we think now it’s about time something was done about it. This was used for all kinds of activities, including playgroups, parties, youth club discos and lots, lots more. This grade 2 listed building has been just standing there doing nothing and it’s about time something was done. You can help by filling in our online survey via our website or by visiting the Hadleigh Library and filling one out there. We need to get as many people as possible to fill these in to start the ball rolling. www.openeasthouse.webs.com - Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

Welcome Year 7s! We were delighted to welcome pupils back to school after the summer break. Our new Year 7 pupils are settling quickly into Hadleigh High School, tackling the challenges placed in front of them with a huge amount of enthusiasm and determination. Most of the students are already independent, finding their own way around the school and are coping very well. The students have been working hard in the past couple of weeks and we are sure will continue to do so. New Staff This term, a number of new staff have joined us (replacing those who have retired, relocated or who have been promoted to roles in other schools). We warmly welcome our new teachers to our school: • Mrs Reed (Teacher of Art) • Miss Portway (Teacher of Maths) • Miss Bearman (Teacher of Science) • Mr Hellewell (Teacher of Music) • Mr Fahy (Teacher of Geography and PE) • Mrs Palmer (Teacher of PSHE and RE) • Mr McMillan (Teacher of Science and PE) Good Luck Year 11s! Year 11 pupils are currently preparing for their Art mock and their Maths and English GCSEs in November. Revision sessions are already underway and the pupils have shown a great deal of maturity in the way they have taken ownership of their work. We wish them the very best of luck for these exams and the remainder in the summer. We have high hopes for the Year 11s and we’re sure that they will exceed our expectations. Good Luck! Duke of Edinburgh Before the summer holidays, 46 students took part in the D of E Awards Scheme. They received a bronze certificate from an Olympic silver medallist and D of E Co-ordinator – Phil Brown in the end of term assembly. This year, a new group of year 10 pupils are taking on the challenge, some did their training back in July and the others are doing their training on the 21st September. In Year 11, 20 students who have achieved the bronze award are progressing to the silver award which is a big commitment and usually undertaken in the sixth form. Art Our new member of the Art department – Miss Reed- had a delightful welcome to the Hadleigh High community and says that she really enjoys working in our school. Recently, she did drawings of real fish and has started a pottery club. She also mentions how lovely and creative the students are – especially the Year 10s. Euan from Year 10 said: “Miss Reed is great! She gives us a lot of freedom when doing work so that we can put our ideas down on paper. I think working independently is a great skill to learn.” Shakespeare Festival Before the summer holidays, auditions took place for the Shakespeare Festival. There were 21 students, Year 9 to 11, who took part. The audition consisted of a re-enactment of ten lines from the ‘The Tempest’. The students performed at Dance East in Ipswich. The festival was an exciting event and an excellent opportunity for our students. New term for PE in Hadleigh High We welcome both Mr Fahy and Mr McMillan who join the PE team this year this. We also congratulate Mrs Wing who won second place (in her age category) in a triathlon. It was a sprint triathlon with 150 participants, and included 30

a 300m swim, a 20k bike ride and a 5k run. Well done Mrs Wing! There was also a fun run on the 17th September on the school field, after school hours. There were many participants including a GB Athlete! 5 Tickets have been sold for a Rugby Trip to Twickenham rugby ground. The match will be England vs. Argentina. We hope the 5 students who bought the tickets enjoy this exciting experience. Extra Curricular Clubs Hadleigh High has a range of clubs for every personal taste. Our new Cupcake Decorating class has been very popular and successful! It is on every Blue Wednesday between 3pm-5pm. The first class took place on Wednesday 18th September. If you love cake decorating, then this is the club for you! Students learn new skills like time management, hygiene and of course, cake decorating! Mr Hellewell is starting up a Soul band and Miss Macey is also planning on starting up an African drumming club. We hope these will be very successful clubs as many students seem interested. Special Congratulations to: Jared White (8D) who recently achieved his Black Belt in Karate. At just 12 years old, he is the youngest person in this club - Stoke by Nayland, to achieve this. Well done Jared! Chloe Read (10T) for passing her Grade 1 Guitar Exam with a distinction. She did extremely well and had practised hard for the exam. Harry Planck (10G) who entered an ‘Open Mic’ singing competition in Southend and did exceptionally well, to the extent that he reached the semifinal stages, which takes places on 20th October. Should Harry succeed in reaching the finals, he will be singing at the O2 Arena in London. Well done Harry! Charity Fundraising During the summer Miss O’Brien, our Administration Assistant, gave herself the challenge of walking the ‘Great Wall of China’ in aid of charity. Miss O’Brien set off from London with 16 others to start their 10 day challenge. She managed to raise £3,000 for ‘Childreach International’; this is a commendable amount. Well done Miss O’Brien! Year 8 – Apps For Good Year 8 are learning about app development. The course covers all key aspects of new product development, from idea generation, feasibility and deciding on business models, to product design and marketing young pupils’ work. Together as teams they will find real issues they want to tackle and how best to solve them through apps. As well as learning about app technology and development, pupils will learn enterprise and new skills. The best apps teams will be put forward for the national finals; the winning prototype apps are redeveloped professionally and launched publicly. Community News Out with the old in with the new! Our Year 10 Community News team has now taken the role of writing the Community News for Hadleigh High. The team members are Tim Jenkins, Amarlia Thomson, Chloe Read, Morgan Geller, Olivia Sherred, Livi Player, Ellen Seeley, Emma Sharpe, Victoria Tapp, Euan Hawthorne and Amiee Davies. By taking on this role, the Year 10s must show how independent they are, and learn the importance of meeting deadlines.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club What a fascinating evening the September meeting of the Club turned out to be. The demonstration evening was on willow weaving by the very talented Jo Hammond who showed us how to construct and weave a ‘sweet pea wigwam’ and another table top example made as a ‘Christmas tree’ with lights inside. She persuaded members to join in, although the more difficult full sized one she completed and gave as a raffle prize, but the smaller was almost entirely done by members, well done! Jo also brought various types of basket to show what could be done with more tuition and practise and I know some of us "crafty" people are longing to give it a go. Our next meeting is on the FIRST Monday IN OCTOBER (7th), a week early and is a visit to Hyde Hall and it was agreed we would meet at the swimming pool car park at 10.00 am to sort out transport - so if you missed the September meeting and want to visit Hyde Hall please arrive promptly. Living in town and meandering the streets daily led me to question the decline of our high streets and the plethora of charity shops that confront us. A friend recently closed their second hand bookshop, unable to compete. Oxfam proudly boasts of being a national book chain selling a range of goods, in direct competition with the private trader. These charity shops pay minimal business rates, employ many voluntary staff and sell donated products. Therefore what hope the average competing small trader? Those days when such outlets operated for a short period whilst landlords awaited a new tenant selling a few second hand items and earning a few bob for the local hospice are well gone, they are now thriving national companies. The recent publicity regarding the excessive salaries and perks of charity directors is nothing short of an unregulated scandal but what is worse is the huge annual bonuses paid out. As one commentator wisely noted “If these managers will not give of their best without generous bonuses, are they the right people to be running charities in the first place?” Again, the profligate wastage in admin costs. Oxfam stated, whist attempting to justify the salaries paid, “We saved £3 million in efficiency savings last year alone!” If the management were of such a high calibre why had this wastage been going on in the past? I searched the addresses of these charity headquarters. Why does Cancer Research, Save the Children, McMillan Cancer Support, the Red Cross and the NSPCC inhabit costly edifices in London? If government departments can move to Swansea and the north, or the BBC to Salford to achieve savings why on earth can’t our charities? I give about 5% of my income to charity. Many give much, much more, including their time. I ignore cold callers and postal pleas and attempt to give to those without costly admin or highly paid executives. I also think that admin costs could be halved tomorrow if many of our charities, often serving the same course, were to amalgamate, sell off their expensive offices and share the same office staff. I think it an arrogant insult to those who give so generously of their time and money fundraising to see such costs skimmed off. Lets support those local charities, managed by competent people on realistic salaries, with our time and cash. Whist on the subject of fundraising I now tread contentious ground. I notice that weekly, in our local press, that yet again some very well meaning citizen has had their head shaved, climbed Kilimanjaro, or bathed in a tub of baked beans in the name of charity. What purpose does this achieve when the same sponsorship could be raised in a far more worthwhile fashion. How about a sponsored litter pick or clear up of our streets. How about time spent, again sponsored, tending a pensioners garden or volunteering at a local day centre. The same money could be realised for charity whilst helping the community. How I dread that annual Red Nose Day when absolutely pointless stunts are performed in the name of charity when the same effort could be put into worthwhile projects. As I said, our charity industry and our well intentioned giving needs a radical rethink! Peter Thorogood

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts This is the time of year to think about buying new bulbs. There are an assortment of different types of bulbs with different characteristics. Probably the most popular are the various types of daffodils. When planted in the garden these will probably last for several years. In time in most gardens they will deteriorate and this is why I shall be doing some restocking this year. Whereas daffodils only come in white to yellow shades, tulips come in a wide variety of colours. This makes the big types super for formal bedding. In most gardens one has to regard tulips as disposable. It is very difficult to get the large varieties to flower year after year. For this reason although I love the flowers I do not grow them. I do like to grow the small species tulips. and providing you plant them deep they will last for years, In some cases if you are lucky they will seed around and multiply. I shall also be buying a few hyacinths to grow in bowls to decorate the house. When these have gone over they will be transferred into ordinary pots for the leaves to grow on until they die back. They will then be planted in the garden where they will flower for years. If you are adventurous there are a lot of other bulbs that one can grow. One of these is the grape hyacinch. These are lovely, but need a bit of a warning. If you grow them make sure you dead head them as soon as the flowers are over because otherwise they will seed around, and you will have grape hyacinths everywhere. Weather Records In August at Kersey there were 50.5 mm ( 2 " ) of rain, which is practically spot on our average rainfall. The interesting thing is that most of it fell on just two days out of the month, so that effectively we had a warm dry month. This increased the 3 month figure slightly to 95 mm ( 3.7 " ) which is about 63 % of the average. In August the maximum temperature was 30 Cel ( 86 F ) , which is quite typical. The minimum temperature for August was 9 Cel ( 48 F ) which is again quite normal. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 13 Cel ( 55 F) , which is typical for mid September. Hints October is the month to start the Winter clear up while enjoying the last of the Summer flowers, and harvesting and enjoying the vegetables that you have grown. There is an increasing interest in planting Spring Bedding and Containers, and this is the time to get on with this job. The popular plants are Pansies and Wallflowers (correctly Cheiranthus), although there are other plants such as Bellis (the double daisy) that can be used. I am a little wary of buying Wallflower plants, because they belong to the crucifer family, and are therefore susceptible to the "Club Root" disease which affects cabbages and related vegetables, and I do not want to risk introducing this into my vegetable patch. Where no vegetables are grown this is less important. October is a good month to lift and replant Crocosmia & Montbretia. Throw away the old tubers and replant the best of the new ones. It is also important to remember that we can have a damaging frost by the end of October, so it is a good idea to either protect or propagate tender perennials. We do not know what the coming Winter will be like, so we should be prepared. One can get very good sweet pea plants by sowing them now in pots or root trainers, and overwintering them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Enjoy your gardening. Good Gardening, John Rye

Hadleigh 10 and 5 Races Date for your diary: Sunday 24th November
HADLEIGH CAR WASH Opening Times 8 am -7 pm
7 Days A week
The ‘Hadleigh 10’ is Hadleigh Hares Running Club’s well established race, but this year, in memory of our Life Time Member, John Chisnall, and with the blessing of his family, we have renamed the race ‘The John Chisnall 10’. Runners expecting to take on a familiar 10 mile race now have the option of taking on a challenging new course. The Hadleigh 10 has been a fixture in the calendar for runners for years but now the organisers behind the race want to tempt people with a new five-mile course. The new race will take place at the same time as the usual 10 mile event. Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club organises the race as well as an annual cross country event. A spokesman for the club said: “We have decided to introduce the five-mile race for runners who might want to try a shorter distance and who are not quite ready for the longer race. We hope people just getting into the sport will want to come along and have a go and see if they can be the first winner of the new event.â€? The courses, which start and finish close to Hadleigh United Football Club’s ground, will take runners through the Brett Vale countryside. Last year more than 260 runners took part. The event, which is sponsored by Peake Fitness, Ipswich Building Society and the East of England Co-operative Society, will take place on Sunday, November 24. Both races will start at 11am, with a 2km children’s fun run beginning at 11.05am. The Hadleigh 5 race is ÂŁ8 for affiliated, ÂŁ10 non-affiliated. The Hadleigh 10 race is ÂŁ11 affiliated, ÂŁ13 nonaffiliated. All entries on the day will be ÂŁ2 extra. The fun run is ÂŁ4.50 for children. To enter go to www.hadleighhares.co.uk

STEERING PROBLEMS? UNEVEN TYRE WEAR? HIT A POTHOLE?
Hot work at Hadleigh in 2013 (courtesy of MG Photography) The sun shone like 1976 and it was arguably the club’s best season since those halcyon days. So much cricket was played that we ran out of balls. Thankfully the bar never ran out of snakes. A top three finish for the 1st XI in their first season back in Division 1 of the Two Counties Championship was way beyond all expectations. There was even some disappointment that the runners-up spot slipped from our grasp, due to a batting collapse at Mistley and a washed out final game. What was the key to the team’s success? From the moment Josh Davey’s side inched over the line in their opening match their confidence grew with every game, and selfbelief, superb team spirit and some seriously talented cricketers did the rest. Those players with top flight experience made it count and several others took their game up a level. Marlon Dias (749 runs at 44) and Luke Ibbs (638 runs at 35) had great seasons with the bat, Matt Wareing took 44 wickets at an average of 15, while Kyle Tanner combined 34 wickets with 471 runs and a batting average of 47 – a fantastic all-round effort. The club did not win anything this year, but shared the Hunts County Bats Division 1 League Cup with Woolpit after the final came to a soggy end. There are plans to split the division next season but Martin Grayling’s team found the division already effectively two mini-leagues. Some huge wins were combined with some very competitive games against Woolpit, Sudbury and Mildenhall, but we hope more clubs agree to join the division next year. For the Saturday and Sunday 2nds, survival was the big prize and both teams did so with varying degrees of comfort. Bloss Tampion’s team struggled for a settled side but won their key games. Dan Green was a rock at the top of the order, while Dave Hinsley was not only the team’s leading wicket taker but almost led the way with the bat as well. His 124 not out against Witham as a stand-in opener will live long in the memory of all those who saw it. It all came down to the last few overs for Peter Tampion’s side, as four bonus points were required from our last game at Earl Stonham. As the light faded on the season Richard Shanks and Roger Daniels secured the second batting point we needed to pip Great Cornard. Relegation would not have been a disaster, as this side exists to develop young players and it has been another hugely encouraging season in this regard, with Daniel Shanks, Oliver Peters, Aaron Tampion, Ben Daniels and Jamie Colcomb making excellent progress. Thank you to all our sponsors and supporters who have helped to make this such an enjoyable and successful season. The club’s presentation evening takes place on October 5th but here are some awards you may have missed: The Kofi Annan award for most diplomatic batting – Luke Ibbs, whose 191* was one short of the all-time record score set by club legend David Clifford. The Location, Location, Location award for most site visits – Ben Daniels, who played at Woolpit four times for three different teams! The Top Gear award for worst reliance on driving technology – Nadie Abdul, who needed to get to Sudbury. His Sat Nav took him to Woolpit. Farmer

Champion Defends Title! The annual Ladies Singles tournament took place on Sunday 18th August. The event was well subscribed by players and supporters alike, with a ‘round robin’ tournament involving all entrants leading to a Final match between the top two scorers. The Final was keenly contested between Linda Dhondy and defending champion Sandy Claireaux over 90 minutes in the full sun and high humidity. It was Sandy who ultimately emerged the 2013 winner, commenting: “That was the hardest match I have played. Nobody knew who would win until the final ball was struck. Linda is a tough competitor.” Congratulations to Sandy and Linda for producing a fine spectacle. Sandy was presented with the Challenge Trophy by Club Chairman Geoff Scott. Additional coaching facilities now available! Towards the end of August, the club arranged for an additional coach, (as well as Lawrence, our Junior coach), to offer coaching sessions to new, existing, or prospective members wanting to improve their skills, (or to help players returning to the game after a layoff to get back into the swing of things, pardon the pun!). These sessions are run by Toby Bawden on one of the courts during the Thursday evening club session at the moment, (though this may change over the winter period). Sandy and Linda are convinced that Toby helped them provide such an interesting match in the Ladies singles final! If all goes well, (and it is going very well at the moment), we hope to make this a permanent feature in the future. For more information, please check the noticeboard in the clubhouse, or contact me at the address below. Our website contains further information and provides directions to the club and courts. We are also publishing dates for club events in a calendar on the website. Please go and have a look at it: www.hadleightennis.org.uk and feel free to give us any feedback about the site. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week during the summer months: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. We are pleased to advise that annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (this will be charged pro-rata for new members joining the club during the season). If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or contact Paul Knowles on 07747 637147

Monday the 2nd September saw the club hold a '25m Race Night' with virtually all members of the club entered in a race, lots of Personal Best times across the age ranges. Lots of cheering from parents, siblings and friends a very good natured competitive evening, a fine healthy start to the new school year. The enthusiasm within this club did not stop there, with a Ceilidh organised on the 14th September at Manor Farm Barn, Semer (thanks to Mr and Mrs James Buckle), a family event to raise money to replace the 40 year old diving blocks. With the support of local businesses Hadleigh Castings, Erben and Toppesfield and the proceeds of the ceilidh we are nearly half way to our target of £5000. Thanks to Jim Lawrence, Copella, Toppesfield and Gayle Pryor, Andrew Sturgeon of Lindsey for their generous donations and support for the above event the club is extremely grateful. Carey Fraulo

Newton goes down fighting in Stenson Final Newton Green put up a fighting challenge in an attempt to win the Suffolk Stenson Shield for the first time, but lost narrowly to final tie favourites Felixstowe Ferry. In the eight afternoon singles clashes, Newton scored some noteable successes, but they could not pull back the margin of a 3 – 1 reversal in the morning foursomes. The final score was 7 – 5 to their rivals, who were determined to make up for losing last year’s final on a play-off hole. However, despite trailing at lunch time, with Jed Seeley and Ryan Talbot the only foursomes victors, Newton showed in the afternoon why they have become a force to be reckoned with in Suffolk golf. With Russell Oakey and Greg Hills always in command of their matches against Mark Foster and Rhodri Harston, Newton kept their hopes alive. But reversals for Ryan Talbot, Adam Woodhead and Steve Wordley, helped Paul Waring, Billy MacLeod and George Copsey recover Felixstowe’s momentum. A comfortable win for Ian Woodhead kept hopes alive for Newton but, despite an impressive half for 16-year-old Jed Seeley against the experienced Neil Meadows, and tail ender Simon Bearman holding the edge over Josh Murton, the morning set-backs just could not be rectified. With Bearman still on the course and one up with two to play, Felixstowe already had 6.5 points from a possible 12 in the bag. The Newton player might well have gone on to win, but it would still have given his side only 5.5 points, and Bearman and opponent Josh Murton settled for a half. However, the final score could have been 6.5 - 5.5, instead of the agreed 7 – 5, and showed Newton’s first ever Stenson final appearance had been merited. It had been based on a run of previous round victories all achieved on away courses. FELIXSTOWE FERRY 7 NEWTON GREEN 5 At Hintlesham. Felixstowe names first. Foursomes: Mark Fosker and Paul Waring beat Adam Woodhead and Russell Oakey two up; Billy Macleod and Rhodri Harston beat Greg Hills and Simon Bearman 5 and 4; George Copsey and Toby Spink lost to Jed Seeley and Ryan Talbot 5 and 3, Neil Meadows and John Blackmore beat Ian Woodhead and Steve Wordley 2 and 1. Singles: Waring beat Talbot 3 and 2; Fosker lost to Oakey 6 and 4, Harston lost to Hills 3 and 2, Macleod beat A Woodhead 3 and 2, Meadows halved with Seeley; Spink lost to I Woodhead 5 and 4, Copsey beat Wordley 4 and 3, Josh Murton halved with Bearman.
