Designed, with the community, by Herbaculture CIC Contractors and various partners including John Moore Tree Services, Escar UK Bronze, ActivLives, A J and SB Surveyors it is hoped the garden will be enjoyed for years to come. Chris Storey, Chair of Sudbury in Bloom, said: “I’m very proud to officially open the newly designed garden at Weavers Piece, which follows months of hard work by the community, Sudbury in Bloom volunteers and our partners, including Sudbury Community Wardens. “We wanted to be able to make this space more connected and entrenched in the town’s silk history by creating a garden which could be explored and enjoyed by all - with Gainsborough House, and the Sudbury Heritage Centre nearby we intend this to be an established part of the Sudbury visitor and tourism offer. “I hope that the garden will be well used over the coming years and I’m sure it will feature as part of future Sudbury Silk Festivals. Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “It’s always exciting to open something we’ve invested in to inspire our residents to get outside and explore Sudbury’s unique history and connections to the silk industry. “Supported by the Sudbury Vision Group, the garden forms an important part of investing in the town’s public landscape and creating a place for the community to explore and enjoy at any age.

This Community Can Pulling together in the Wake of CO19 The team at the Community News recognise the unprecedented times we are living through at the moment and wanted to reach out to our readers to offer a space in which to safely connect with others. Whilst we have witnessed fear based panic buying in the supermarkets with empty shelves and not a loo roll or a packet of spagetti in sight. Whole neighbourhoods are organising themselves and rallying round to help each other in the midst of the unknown. Health workers rolling up their sleeves and getting on with the job in hand, caring for others. Retail staff on the front line, managing distressed, frustrated and often difficult customers. Those in the Leisure, Creative and Hospitality sector, pulling out all the stops to think outside the box and offer different kinds of services to help people through the next few months and ensure that once we are we still have places to go and activities to take part in. Next month we would like to run a feature on all of the positive practices that are taking place across our community in the midst of CO19. We have the national news to keep us abreast of the latest guidelines, advice and developments but we want to hear from you. What’s going on in your street, community, service or group to help others? What is helping you to cope effectively with self isolation? If you attend an activity how are you managing to stay connected remotely? In the midst of any crisis we must always look for the helpers, the enablers, the individuals who work hard to be part of the solution. So get involved and share your news with us so that we can help to play a part in joining up the dots, connect the community and pull together. The Sudbury and Long Melford Community News is distributed FREE to over 7600 homes and businesses locally, that’s a lot of people ! SEND US YOUR; Information about neighbourhood groups offering practical support Alternative activities to usual events from your club/group Recipes Wellbeing Hints and Tips Ideas/Support for keeping children entertained Anything else that may be useful or informative for our readers during these times. Undergoing major surgery inflicts similar stress to running a Marathon! Would you run a Marathon without training? No? So why not prepare for surgery as you would for long distance running? Failure to prepare for surgery increases the risk of complications, lengthens hospital stay and makes getting back to normal activity levels harder. Prehabilitation is a holistic package of care that prepares your body for the shock of a surgical procedure. It includes individualised exercise, respiratory training and lifestyle advice to ensure that your post-operative recovery goes as smoothly as possible so that you can get back to the things you enjoy. It makes sure that you are ‘Fit to fight’ and able to ‘weather the storm’. If you are due to undergo a major surgical procedure, our Physiotherapist Sarah Fowler, can ensure that you are optimally prepared to bounce back quickly. It only takes a few weeks prior to your surgery to get you ready. Please call the practice on 01473 810185 for further information or to book an Initial Assessment with Sarah.

Electricity in St Mary’s Chilton St Mary’s was vested to the Churches Conservation Trust in 1979 when the parish became unable to support the church. This beautiful red brick stone and flint 15th century church with a 16th century tower sat in the middle of fields and was only accessible by foot. Over the years the Industrial Estate between Sudbury and Chilton has become a close neighbour which has meant access and parking, more people have been able to visit. With a dedicated Friends Group the church is well cared for and loved. Thirteen years ago the organ was installed and in 2013, they started the process of getting electricity installed with a funding legacy. The aim was to get heating, so that the church could be used all year round but the decision was made to retain the special atmosphere with candles and oil lamps for lighting. The project was finished this year and enabled them to hold a performance of a Christmas Carol in December with over 40 people attending and the Carol Service was standing room only. I think last month I said it had been a strange couple of months since Christmas and now everyone knows it’s got very strange and is in territory few of us have experienced before. Obviously, things are moving fast but I wanted to use this article to talk about the things that the Town Council are putting into place to keep services running throughout the coming emergency. Firstly, I reported in my last article that Jacqui Howells had decided to retire and that we would be holding interviews to recruit a new Clerk. I’m glad to report the process went very well. We had 15 applicants 3 of whom went through an intensive interview process. The candidate chosen is Ciaran Griffin who has already started to work with us.

Ciaran is a 30-year army veteran whose final posting was as Colchester Garrison commander, but he has also had an extensive career in the field and with the Ministry of Defence. Ciaran has lived in Little Cornard for several years Come along to our Monthly Meetings Come along Approved Installerto our Monthly Meetings CCTV & Access Control NSI so knows the Sudbury area well. Ciaran has clearly arrived at a challenging time but has immediately got down to work coordinating the Town Council’s response to the corona virus situation. Overall, the Council like all organisations are guided by what government policy says but we need to apply this to our Town. There are several areas we have needed to think about as a start: • Town Hall offices. Today, Friday 20th March these offices are still open but this is a fast-moving situation and Ipswich and Suffolk Councils have already closed their offices. We want to keep the offices open as long as possible and as long as it’s safe – we will essentially be keeping an eye on government directions on this. Having said that, as at the time of writing the Tourist Information Office and Library are shutting,

Our aim is to help and support people wit Parkinson's • When we close the Town Hall offices. When this happens, we still want and their carers from Sudbury and the surrounding

to deliver the Council’s services. To this end we are setting up advice line numbers (see Council website) so that we can still give needed advice; we are organising a home working rota for staff to keep the admin functions of the Council going; working out how our Community Wardens can work in the town during all of this,

• If you can help. We want to identify and link the many people who want to volunteer to help to each other. To this end there is an email address volunteer@sudburytowncouncil.co.uk that people can use to register their willingness to volunteer. Councillor Louise Fowler is leading the Council’s efforts on this and her contact details are on the Town Council website,

• Supporting local businesses. We can support local businesses to trade in this very difficult time. Rachel, our excellent Town Centre Manager, is working with local businesses to create a Virtual High Street via the Town Council website. This will give access to information on how local businesses are delivering their services during this time and shows how you can help – see the Town Council’s website,

• Keeping the community in touch. We can make sure members of the community in Sudbury and its surrounds, can keep in touch and contact people as needed. Councillor Steve Hall looks after the Sudbury Community watch which is a message board that allows people to keep in touch. All Councillors are available to help and be in contact as needed and their details are available on the Town Council’s website.

• Operation of the market. This is a major facility for the Town, and we will endeavour to keep it going as long as possible in line with government policy on food stores and markets. At the time of writing we are still, like many, working things out and responding to new things as they come along but please keep tabs on the Town Council website (www.sudburytowncouncil.co.uk) and the noticeboards around the town. Self-Care when Self-Isolating Self-Care is important at the best of times but it’s especially important at this uncertain time. So how can you look after your mental wellbeing if you have to self-isolate? Here are five ideas to look after yourself when self-isolating if you are feeling well enough: 1) Acknowledge how you are feeling. It’s important to stay in tune to how you are feeling and acknowledge any anxieties that you might have. Write down any worries you have in a journal or talk to someone you trust on the phone. Reach out if you are struggling and remember it is ok to feel unsettled. 2) Limit how much time you spend on social media and on the news. It’s really easy to get overwhelmed by the constant news articles and Facebook posts about Covid-19. It can be anxiety-provoking to keep reading about something that feels so uncertain and scary. It may be helpful to limit your social media and news usage to a small window of the day. It’s also important to fact check what you read. Only take on board reliable news sources and websites that have been backed up by Government, NHS, or WHO information. 3) Keep in touch. Being in social isolation doesn’t mean you can’t be social! Call or Skype friends and family. Keeping in touch with our loved ones is so important for our wellbeing and connecting with others can boost our mental health. Go for a virtual coffee with a friend by skyping whilst having your favourite brew. Have family dinner over skype, that way you can all cook your favourite meals and chat to family over food. 4) Do the things you love! A good distraction whilst self-isolating is to get back in touch with hobbies and activities you love. Do you like reading or listening to audiobooks? Is there a show you’ve been meaning to watch? What about that scarf you’ve been knitting but hadn’t got around to finishing? Do you like puzzles or craft? How about writing a short story? Could you try yoga? What about trying baking? 5) Keep a routine. Something that may help is keeping a routine. Getting up and going to bed at the same time every day can really help keep a routine, it may also help to change after you wake even if it’s just clean pyjamas. Keeping a routine can enhance your mood and keep some anxiety at bay. Doing all these things can help you stay positive during social-isolation and look after your mental health. This is a difficult time for all of us so remember to check in with your loved ones and reach out if you need help. Be kind, stay safe and practice self-care. Sudbury Open Gardens Sudbury Open Gardens this year takes place on Saturday 20th June 1pm to 5pm and Sunday 21st June 11.30am to 5pm. All proceeds go to St Nicholas Hospice Care. At the moment we are a bit short of volunteers to open their gardens this year. We would be very grateful for any publicity you can give us. For anyone who wants to open their gardens it is not as daunting as you might think. Their garden does not have to be huge and there is no need to provide refreshments and cakes. Although some garden owners like to do this. Some like to offer plant sales or show off their interests such as metal work, bee keeping etc. I am happy for you to publish my email address and telephone number if this helps: Mark.francis410@btinternet.com 07976-356436 I have just started a group on facebook called Sudbury Open Gardens and the more members I can get the better. The Long Melford Historical & Archaeological Society held their first meeting of 2020 on Thursday 20th February. This meeting is by tradition a ‘Members Night’ when supporter are invited to give a short talk on a subject relating to local history or some research they have carried out. We were spoilt for choice this year with no less than eight offers and we selected four of our newer members to speak. The lure of the Melford related topics on offer was enough to encourage forty five members and guests to the warmth of the Old School Community Centre. First to speak was our Vice President, Henry Ruse, with an entertaining and informative talk on the late 19th century history of butchery in Long Melford, from stories Henry’s father told him. We heard of the challenges of keeping meat fresh without fridges, which involved marble worktops, cotton blinds to keep out flies and even a cycle ride to the railway station on a trade bike to buy a block of ice. We heard how fatty meat was more valued than lean mean, especially in the 1920’s when suet puddings were all the rage and packaging was a piece of old newspaper that customers donated. Ruse’s Butchers used to deliver by horse and cart to the door of customers in the surrounding villages of Borley, Glemsford, Foxearth and Alpheton. Henry recalled riding the trade bike himself aged 11 and helping in the slaughterhouse before starting work for the family business full time aged 16. Next up was Simon Edge who told us about the unique and wonderful Medieval Stained Glass in our Holy Trinity Church, which we discovered is one of the best collections in the United Kingdom. Most of the English medieval glass was lost at the time of the Reformation and ours only survived as it was originally much higher up in top windows, which meant it was not easy to reach or destroy. The glass was moved *While in the 19th Centurylast and again into storage during the stocks war, before being put back in its present position in the 1950’s. The glass is particularly interesting as the figures depict are real people, mainly family members and business associate of John Clopton and include information relating to the clothing and appearance of people at that time. April’s advice column

Acton Garden Club

I’ve got tickets to an event next week and I’m not sure what will happen in light of coronavirus. I bought the tickets for myself and a few friends, one of them is worried about attending. What can I do? Ticket holders who change their mind about going to see an event, such as a concert that is still going ahead, have no legal right to a refund. If, however, the event is cancelled, your refund rights will depend on how you bought the ticket. If you bought your ticket from an official seller and the organiser cancels, moves, reschedules, or makes the event behind closed doors, you should get a refund. This is the case even if it is cancelled due to a government ban on large events. The official seller is the best person to ask about how to get a refund. If you bought your ticket from a ticket-reselling website, refunds will depend on the site’s terms and conditions. If you bought from a private seller and the event is cancelled or rescheduled then it is unlikely you will be able to recover your money. We recommend you contact the seller. If you’re due to go to an event, keep checking the information from the official seller or organiser to ensure you’re up to date. Unfortunately we’ve found that in these situations scammers prey on those who are affected. If your event is cancelled and people or companies offer their services to try to recover money on your behalf, make sure that you’re looking out for the signs of a potential scam. https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/scams/check-if-somethingmight-be-a-scam/ *Please note we are no longer seeing clients face to face until further notice*
