The key to solving homelessness in Sudbury Babergh District Council is throwing open the doors of a newly converted property in Sudbury this week – providing a safe place to stay for up to eight people in need of temporary accommodation. 4HEĂ’&IRS Ă’INĂ’7ALDINGÂľELDĂ’2OAD Ă’HASĂ’BEENĂ’CONVERTEDĂ’INTOĂ’AĂ’HOUSEĂ’OFĂ’MULTIPLEĂ’ occupation to add to the council’s temporary accommodation stock, providing more essential accommodation to help those at risk of homelessness. By increasing temporary accommodation in the area, the council hopes to REDUCEĂ’THEĂ’NUMBERĂ’OFĂ’PEOPLEĂ’HAVINGĂ’TOĂ’BEĂ’HOUSEDĂ’FURTHERĂ’AÂľELDĂ’kĂ’STOPPINGĂ’ them from being separated from friends, family and local support in the midst of a crisis. We are committed to building on

this work, with this newly converted asset for the district meaning more people can stay closer to area that they know and where they have connections, particularly during a stressful time. “By increasing our own temporary housing stock, we can reduce the amount of money spent on emergency bed and breakfast accommodation and ensure we have the right accommodation in the right place. Cllr Jan Osborne (foreground) with (from left) Jaimee Brooks, Jon Elsey & Mikaila Hopley Poole from Babergh District Council’s Housing Solutions and Building Services teams.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As the Chancellor’s Parliamentary aide in the Commons I have had a bird’s eye view of the huge effort put in by HM Treasury to support business and employment during lockdown. As a result of that lockdown, itself necessary to protect public health, we are now seeing the inevitable negative economic JNQBDU #VU * BN DPOÙEFOU UIBU FWFSZUIJOH QPTTJCMF IBT CFFO EPOF UP TVQport businesses through grants, loans, and cuts to VAT and business rates. 0VU BOE BCPVU JO 4PVUI 4VGGPML PWFS UIF MBTU GFX XFFLT WJTJUJOH TIPQT BOE market traders, time and again the message from business owners was how grateful they were for the support received – but I am aware challenging economic headwinds continue. The fact is we cannot support every business or save every job. I am aware that for one technical reason or another some have not received the support they would have expected. Above all, even where businesses have received grants or Bounce Back Loans, as a small business owner myself by background, I know this is not enough. Yes, businesses can be publicly supported for a short period. However, ultimately, if businesses are to keep trading, they need just that: trade. That means footfall; that means custom; and that NFBOT ZPV BOE * HFUUJOH PVU BOE TVQQPSUJOH MPDBM ÙSNT This is one reason the Chancellor recently announced the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme, offering discounted meals in August if we do our bit by doing the sort of thing we used to enjoy before lockdown – popping to our local pub, café or restaurant for a meal. I would encourage people to make the most of these offers, but naturally, to do so sensibly and in a way that complies with public health guidance. I will sound like a stuck record in the weeks ahead but must repeat: the effort of our shops and services to implement Covid-safe environments needs to be matched by each of us. ‘Normal’ times have not returned but lockdown JT ÙOBMMZ FBTJOH BOE XF DBO TUJMM FOKPZ PVSTFMWFT JO B XBZ UIBU MJGUT PVS NPPE and – most importantly - protects jobs.

support of so many good people around me, I do not believe I would have made it. People that help lift you up, that accept you for who you are, and confront life’s challenges alongside you. This, for me, is the essence of counselling. I have worked alongside some wonderful people during my placement and have learnt lessons from each and every one of them. Moving forward, I must make sure that I am no-longer held back by any echoes from my past and remain open to experience. If you had told me three years ago that I would have a degree and be running my own business, I would have laughed at you. It just goes to show what you can achieve when you start believing in yourself. !Â&#x;MESSAGEÂ&#x;FROMÂ&#x;'LENDAÂ&#x;$Â&#x;2OBERTSÂ&#x; Challenge yourself as Kev did, as I did many years ago.
