Bright New Year for Belle Vue House? A community health and wellbeing centre, sheltered housing with a cafĂŠ and heritage centre, or residential conversions are amongst the options suggested for Sudbury’s Belle Vue House. Babergh District Council invited expressions of interest for future uses of the Victorian house, ahead of a public consultation on the ďŹ nal shortlist of proposals. However, plans for public engagement over the proposals which were originally due to take place this month have had to be pushed back to the New Year, as pre-election rules mean the Council is not allowed to launch a consultation in the run up to the General Election. Following an invitation by the Council for expressions of interest in the site, two community bids have been submitted. One would see Belle Vue House converted into a community health and wellbeing centre – working with local providers to offer classes, therapies and support to promote local residents’ physical, emotional and mental health. The other would see the house used for private sheltered housing, with the inclusion of a cafĂŠ and heritage centre. In addition, commercial proposals were also received which proposed the conversion of the building back to residential use. Babergh District Council had originally hoped to share all shortlisted proposals with residents as part of a wider public consultation over the future of Belle Vue later this month – but the announcement of a general election forced a change of plan. Instead, the council will be working with all interested parties over coming weeks to seek any necessary clariďŹ cations on their bids before sharing all four options in more detail next month. The public consultation in the New Year will
also include an update on plans for the proposed hotel and restaurant on the neighbouring site at Belle Vue, as well as ideas for future investment in the park itself. Babergh District Council’s Assistant Director for Assets and Investments, Emily Atack said: “It’s great that community groups and commercial interests have invested time and effort into developing proposals and we’re keen to share these as soon as possible so that everyone can see and understand exactly what they would mean for Sudbury – but we also want to be sure that everyone has a fair chance to have their say. We can’t go out to consultation in the run up to an election, and don’t want to consult immediately afterwards over Christmas, when people may be busy or away.â€? Public feedback, together with consideration of any ďŹ nancial implications will then help councillors reach their ďŹ nal decision over the future of Belle Vue House, while comments on plans for the proposed hotel and restaurant will be taken into consideration ahead of a planning application – which will now be submitted early next year to allow time for public engagement. Further public consultation on the proposed hotel and restaurant will then follow as part of the formal planning process. Emily added: “By giving everyone opportunity to see and comment on plans for Belle Vue, we can ensure that we’re working together to come up with the best possible solution for residents, businesses and visitors to Sudbury.â€?

The Mayor writes... Hello Everyone, This month has a been a busy one for events for me with over 20 functions attended. Before I expand on that I just wanted to proclaim that Sudbury was made Suffolk Town of the Year 2019 by the Suffolk Community Awards. Jacqui Howells, the Town Clerk and I attended the awards ceremony in September to receive the award. Each town had to put in an entry form on which they could set out what made their town so attractive. Jacqui and the team did an excellent job describing the variety of things that happen in Sudbury. Listening to the list being read out during the ceremony made me realise again how lucky we are to live in Sudbury. There were several civic events to attend this month such as a civic service at Needham Market. There were also ceremonial services to attend particularly in the lead up to Remembrance Day. There are very active British Legion and RAF Association groups to support the remembrance ceremonies and to organise the commemorations. The first event was to lay a wreath for the American servicemen who were stationed at the Sudbury base. Unfortunately, the wreath laying couldn’t take place at the airfields because last year the wreaths were stolen – who knows why people do these things – so the wreaths can be seen in the Heritage Centre at the Town Hall. The main Remembrance Day ceremony was as impressive as ever. There many groups such as the Scouts, Sea Scouts and Army, Air Force and Navy trainees. As ever there was a contingent of US Airforce personnel from Lakenheath involved. Talking to the officers from the troop, it is clear that even after all these years it is important for them to attend these events and also how much they appreciate that towns such as Sudbury still remember. All these people gathered to parade to St Gregory’s church for a service and afterwards the Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk and I took their salute on the return parade. During the month I attended two events concerned with Sudbury Citizens Advice, one of my chosen charities for this year. One event was called Sudbury Rocks where a rock choir sang some great rock tunes. The event was a great success and raised some very welcome funds for the Charity. I also drew the prizes for the Christmas draw – yes Christmas does seem to come earlier each year! I had a number of meetings about defibrillators with a Sudbury resident Andy Read whose life was saved by one of these devices. Andy is evangelical about making sure there are enough defibrillators in Sudbury and the Council and myself are happy to give support to this desire. The NHS are also helping and the first step is to get a list of the defibrillators in Sudbury so it is possible to work out the best place to put them. On 19th October an important celebration took place at the Christopher Centre in Gainsborough Street to mark the 25th anniversary of its operation. The centre provides a meeting centre for small groups or charities to find a friendly area to carry out their good work. I have attended a number of events at the centre, for instance to celebrate the achievements of disadvantaged young people who have been able to gain skills in the calm of the centre. Congratulations to Teresa Bishop and all who work there. On the Council front it has been relatively quiet. The main item expected in October/November was to do with Babergh District Council’s plans for Belle Vue House, but this did not happen because of the calling of the General Election. The date is now set for January when it will be interesting to see in detail what BDC’s plans are and what form the two Community bids received for the house take. Well now we start the run up to Christmas and my diary seems to be filling up with events. Besides all the very nice dinners to attend, highlights will be switching on the Christmas lights with the winner of my Christmas card competition and giving out presents on Christmas morning given by a charity that has been running in Sudbury for around 350 years. Have a good Christmas everyone, Robert

News from your Sudbury Arts Venue, The Quay Theatre Hello all! The Editor has kindly allowed me to have my own spot in this very useful community paper to keep you updated to the goings on at your Sudbury Arts Venue, The Quay Theatre. I have the honour of being the Theatre Manager, which can mean many different things depending on the day and what is happening at any given moment, as one thing is for sure – the theatre never stops and every day is different! I’m hoping that the vast majority of readers have at least heard of us, even if they haven’t visited – UK national statistics suggest that only around 60% of residents are aware of their local theatre, so I wouldn’t take it too personally if this isn’t quite the case. The Quay is a registered charity but very much run as a business whose primary concern is to provide as good a service as possible to the local community and beyond. Our Arts programme is incredibly varied with around 15-20 ticketed auditorium events per month covering Drama, Comedy, Children’s Shows, Films, Music and Live Screenings from the Royal Opera House and the National Theatre Live. In between these shows we also play host to a variety of local organisations and clubs including Rock Choir and The Arts Society. Our youth drama programmes are well-attended and affordable along with our annual Summer School of Performing Arts and there is a Costume Department and popup seafood restaurant on the top oor! The costume hire is evidenced in my proďŹ le picture sporting a lovely pantomime horses head (it has a body too!) but is not my usual attire around the building‌ Speaking of pantomime – there are still tickets available for Sudbury Dramatic Society’s 2019 panto ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ which runs from December 14 – January 4 at various times. Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029
Once again there is a rustling of shredded paper at SESAW as more hungry hedgehogs demand their dinner. They will stay with us until they put on enough weight to fend for themselves. Despite our best efforts, some of our rescue stories do not have a happy ending. One such is Titch, a gentle giant of a mastiff, found tied up on a London building site. She needed a leg operation upon arrival but soon recovered and went to live with one of our volunteers and her pets. Unfortunately dogs became jealous of each other and who should share the sofa with the humans. She returned to SESAW to enjoy her walks and playtime again until a sudden decline in her health. Our usually boisterous girl was found to have a massive growth and sadly, is with us no more. It seems those that get dealt the wrong cards throughout their lives cannot have a happy ending. My, how we all miss her ugly ol’ mug gazing at us saying “come on give us a cuddle. If you have room in your heart and home to give one of our other residents a new start, leave an answerphone message or email us. Please check the website if you plan to visit as we will be closed for a few weeks. Season’s greetings and best wishes for 2020 from all of us at SESAW, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. In 2016, my mother moved from her home in Staffordshire to Blackbrook House Residential Care Home in Dedham. Paula was then 90 years old and had been blind for 15 years. Through our family visits we learned of the remarkable power of poetry and stories to comfort and to entertain. We would read together the poetry, nursery rhymes and stories our mother had read to us as children, and which she had learned in her own childhood, and these readings would invariably stimulate laughter, reassurance and uplifting conversation. A while later, I picked out a letter in the national press describing the work of The Reader, a charity promoting the benefits of reading aloud together in a range of criminal justice, care, rehabilitation and community spaces across the UK. The Reader believes that great literature is a tool for helping people to live well, aiming to create lively, connected communities that bring people together and books to life. Its wide-ranging, enthusiastic support extends to people living with conditions including dementia, mental-health problems and chronic pain, as well as those recovering from addiction. The beneficial work of The Reader was instantly recognisable to me and the great news is that The Reader is now bringing Shared Reading to Sudbury in partnership with the Suffolk Libraries. Now anyone can join The Reader every Wednesday at 2pm in Sudbury Library to enjoy locally the friendship of a weekly Shared Reading group. Groups are free, open to all and don’t require any skills or contribution, other than to listen to excellent stories and poetry read by trained volunteers. Lively, thoughtful and engaging conversation is guaranteed, and friendships grow by the week. If you or someone you know would like to join in, or find out more we’re at Sudbury Library on Wednesdays at 2pm. Richard Harris, Volunteer Shared Reading Leader. You can learn more about The Reader at www.thereader.org.uk, by contacting Heidi Hollis on 07484006302 or via heidihollis@thereader.org.uk or by asking at the library in Sudbury.

Rotary Club of Sudbury
Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts
The national Rotary magazine this month carried a number of articles about child poverty in the UK. It makes sobering reading. Sudbury Rotarians Gloria, Steve and Sandra (pictured) were all involved in a scheme in Great Cornard, run by local volunteers, which provided breakfast, lunch and activities for a number of primary school children in the area during the school summer holiday.
The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts has published the 2020 Syllabus with the Music Section running from the 5th to the 8th March and taking place at the Delphi, Sudbury.
Gloria and Steve are also members of the Rotary Evening Group (REG!) which meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month in the Prado Lounge on Market Hill, Sudbury, from 7.30 p.m. for about an hour. If anyone is interested in finding out more about REG and their plans for supporting young people in the future, you are most welcome to go along. If you would like to find out more, please telephone Mags (07557 235858) or Gloria (07817 715885).

It is with regret that the 2020 Festival does not include the very popular Dance Section and the Speech and Drama.
December is one of the busiest times for Sudbury Rotarians, with Santa and his elves arriving for the switch-on of the Christmas lights on 29 November, the Schools Concert on 2 December followed by the annual Christmas Tree Festival with its Tree of Memories in St Peter’s, Sudbury from Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 December. This display of around 100 decorated trees gives a magical start to the festive season and also helps raise money for Rotary charities: this year they include Success After Stroke, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau and St Peter’s Regeneration Fund. Unfortunately, Santa does not have a base in Sudbury this year and his busy schedule means that only his elves will be on duty with street collections in the runup to Christmas. It is always heartening that people are so generous with donations towards Rotary charities, and our elves look forward to your support. With December being so busy, the main event will be the Club’s Christmas Lunch on 16 December, again being held at the Swan in Lavenham, when entertainment will be provided by Elaine Henson and her husband Stephen. Our usual weekly lunches, on Mondays at the Mill Hotel, give an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our local and international activities, and to enjoy each other’s company. Looking ahead to 20 January, the topic of our speaker is Hedgehogs. We are all intrigued! If you would like to find out more about Rotary and meet our members, why not come along to one of our lunches? We would be delighted to meet you! Just leave a message on the Club telephone (07787 470876), so we know to expect you. Rotarian Lesley Ford-Platt
However, it is hoped that these two parts of the Festival will be reinstated in 2021. The Festival has been a very successful event in Sudbury with entries from all over East Anglia, not only providing young people the opportunity to display their ability in all sections of performing arts but to also give a great deal of pleasure to those in the audience. In a few years’ time the Festival will be celebrating its 100 years, and all involved with this fantastic event are committed to achieving this milestone. To do this we need volunteers to come forward to help with the festival in 2021. This is a call to arms for you to offer your support and help by either joining the Festival Committee or offering to help during the Festival. If you are interested in helping please contact Joan Garden 01787 372087.

Well folks, where has this year gone.? I have not been able to keep up with it at all, and cannot believe we have got to the festive scene in the shops as I write this, - and have seen the FANTASTIC Thursford Christmas show (which has once again been so beautiful,) and as always the best so far!!! If you have never seen this, you have not lived. It just gets better and better each year we go, - and this one is no exception, just do not know where all the ideas come from. You would not get anything better if you travelled all the way to Las Vegas!!! It won’t be long before 2020 is with us, so I am including some ideas for you to choose from, and I hope to see you on our coach soon. Jan 15 Ipswich “Toby” restaurant for lunch, - just a ride out, a chance for a natter, and back home before it is dark The adult pantomime is fully booked for February, - a very popular venue!! Sorry, but the March holiday to Southport is also fully booked. Our other holidays – with vacancies - as I write are:21-24 Aug - an unusual 4 day holiday – this time Fri to Monday – to County Durham, visiting Durham and Beamish whilst there, - and also to see“Kynren” – a fantastic open air show of the history of England. Do NOT let the word “history” put you off – I hated history at school with a vengeance, but this is just awesome. About one thousand local folk taking part, with 3,000 costumes, and on a Saturday evening just as the sun is going down. Besides all these people are so many animals taking part!! There is also a working Viking village you can see before the show stars. Only 11 shows a year, and all on Saturday summer night. 5 – 9 October is 5 day holiday to Llandudno, and this time (fingers crossed) we can get on the train to go up Mount Snowdon – this got rained off before, as all we would have seen would have been cloud and rain. Finally, we have a Turkey and Tinsel Holiday 16 – 20 November at Weston super mare, - requested by some passengers when we stayed there in March 2019. We also have daily excursions throughout the year, and you can get details from the Tourist Information in Sudbury Library, which give venues, dates and prices. To book, or for further details please call PAT BENNETT on 01787 310982 mobile 07887 868259 or email 22patron24@gmail.com I look forwad to hearing from you. Do not forget, - the early bird gets the worm!!! I am taking this opportunity to wish you ALL a very Happy Christmas and a HEALTHY 2020. Hope you all have a lovely time, and I look forward to hopefully seeing you on board sometime in 2020.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre So now the weather starts to disrupt the programme of rides and our riders can’t always be sure they will get up on a pony and enjoy an outdoor lesson. That’s where I can help because on really wet days each rider can have 10 minutes on my back, practicing skills that might not be possible on a live horse. The best thing I help with is rising trot. Looks easy? Ha, you just try that little uplift of your bottom whilst keeping yourself sitting tall, and balanced, and in rhythm with my body as I emulate the trot for you! At least if the rider clutches tightly on the reins by mistake, I won’t slow down or get confused. My mouth is pretty tough so the rider is forgiven. Its also good fun teaching this skill, there are often squeals of laughter from my room as the bouncing escalates. In addition to this session with me, a cancelled outdoor ride gives time for revision of the horsemanship skills needed to pass grades and earn certificates. RDA is committed to teaching each rider to gain knowledge and understanding of the horse world, and to reinforce the learning that school pupils are receiving through the national curriculum. Having a riding lesson during school hours will complement a person’s learning journey. This is also the season of mud, as any horse owner will know. Our live horses live out nicely rugged up against the wet, but their field gates become well ploughed up by their hooves, and in fetching them in or leading them out, our volunteers have to wade through the quagmire. Its not fun, but ‘all in a good cause’ as we say. Luckily I don’t have mud in my room, and we can switch on the heater in the worst of weather. Christmas will soon be celebrated around the world, whatever the local climate may be. I think we are lucky that it happens during our winter when darkness descends early and there is every excuse for candlelight. Once again, our carol service will begin here in the yard with riders and their families gathered in; we shall have prayers read by some of the riders, music kindly provided by the Serendipity choir and the Boxford Methodist Silver band. There will be mulled wine and mince pies. As darkness falls the Shetland ponies lead the large Shelly family down the hill to the lane and along the lantern lit route to Shelley Church. Each pony is represented by a candle, carried by one of their riders, who place it on the altar for a blessing. It’s the perfect way to remember our connection with a far away, much more primitive stable being mentioned all over the planet at this time of year. Our volunteers will be having their Christmas party, no doubt. I shall pick up the gossip afterwards, but not be there myself of course. I hope all my readers have an enjoyable festival and keep well and happy throughout this busy time. See you in the new year! Website: www.shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

Well, December is here again, it only seems like last week we were gearing up for the new year. Time fly’s when you’re having fun. We have some great activities and events this month to look forward to. The Friends are hosting a Christmas carols morning here on the 14th December from 11am. Tickets for the raffle are £1 each and the winner will be announced on the 14th just after the carols. Who doesn’t love chocolate!!! We are also planning a few children’s activities throughout the month, such as Children’s Christmas stockings – from the 1st December children can come in and take a stocking template colour it in, we will display them in the children’s library throughout the month. On the 23rd we’ll pick two winners who will get a small prize, one from each category – Up to 4 yrs old & 5 + yrs. On November 2, Art Club launched at Sudbury Library. This is a project started by Mercury King to provide an encouraging space for teens to 30-year-olds to express themselves through art. No skill level is required, this is just a fun, positive environment for creative people to come together. “The response I’ve gotten from the local community has been great! When I went in different shops to offer brochures, everyone I spoke with expressed interest. One lady got quite excited and said her grandson has been looking for a group just like this. That’s the kind of response I was really hoping for,” said Mercury. The club is funded through BLOC (Building Libraries On Creativity) which is a partnership between Suffolk Libraries and Arts Council England, art supplies as well as snacks are provided. The £3 fee attendees pay per session helps to keep the club running. The next session of Art Club will be December 7th. Each session is the first Saturday of the month, 9:30am-11:30am in the meeting room at Sudbury Library. Spot and spills! So, what is the best way to clean up a spill on a carpet or fabric! Put white wine on red wine? Scrub it with washing up liquid? Each spillage has its own properties that require breaking down. Wine on wine will be able to dilute the colour, but you are wasting wine and increasing the amount of sugar left in the fibres, meaning the area will pick up dirt making it look like the stain has come back! Scrubbing or using cleaners often have perfumes, and bleaching agents and often damage sensitive fibres like wool, but also causes rapid re-soiling due to the oil based perfumes. Simple is the easiest way! If water based, absorb with kitchen roll, dab small amount of water with sponge to the area, blot out with kitchen roll, use a Woolsafe approved spotter (our professional spotters are available from most local carpet retailers) and blot out. This is the safest way. If this does not remove, stop and call us. We can use other processes to break down the remaining properties to get rid of those unwanted stains. Take a look at our website for stain removal tips or download the Woolsafe app for more information or simply give us a call. www.hadleighcarpetcareltd.co.uk - 07507 240226

Long Melford Silver Band I write this as the Band and guests have arrived home after our 16th weekend away in Ypres, Belgium. Day 1 started well but we were delayed at the Channel Tunnel for four hours (an earlier electrical failure) so didn’t reach our hotel until 6pm. So little practice time that day and no trip into town for our guests. On day 2 we visited the Tower Museum at Ijzer and the (almost) adjacent town of Diksmuide in the morning and in the afternoon while the players rehearsed, our guests visited the German Cemetery at Langemark, a Belgium Cemetery at Houthulst and the CWGC Essex Farm Cemetery on the outskirts of Ypres. In the evening we all attended the daily Remembrance Service at the Menin Gate and the Band played while the wreaths were laid. Michael Rowe laid the Band’s wreath and Sarah Boose laid one on behalf of the Long Melford Branch of the Royal British Legion. Details of the Menin Gate service can be viewed at www.lastpost.be Day 3 brought a morning of rehearsal followed at lunchtime by a mini concert in the hotel for our guests. All the weekend’s music was brand new and not seen by any of the players so getting it up to a concert standard was a challenge!

December’s Advice Column I live with my two children and partner in a small semidetached house. During the winter we use more heating and electricity as we’re home more. Do you have any tips on how I can keep the cost of my energy down during the winter? There are a few things you can do to save some money during the winter period. Check when your energy contract is due to expire. If you’re at the end of your contract use https://energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk/ by Citizens Advice to see if you could save money by switching supplier or tariff. If you’re on a prepayment meter you could save money by replacing your meter with one that lets you pay after using energy rather than in advance. Most suppliers won’t charge you for removing a prepayment meter, though many will run a credit check or ask you for a deposit. You may also be eligible for certain grants and benefits. These could include Warm Home discount or help with energy debt. Here’s a few practical tips to help keep costs down: • Using a timer for your heating, lowering your thermostat and using radiator valve controls could save you over £100 per year • Changing light bulbs to an energy-efficient one could save £50 over the lifetime of the bulb • Turn appliances off standby mode to save around £30 a year • Seal cracks in floors, skirting boards and add draft excluders to letterboxes, doors and windows. Some energy suppliers also offer grants to allow improvements to your home, like insulation or a new boiler. What help you can get depends on your circumstances and what would help your home. You don’t need to be a customer of one of these suppliers to apply but you’ll need to check your eligibility. Sudbury & District Local Citizens Advice can help you do this. At Sudbury & District Local Citizens Advice we are aware that people do not always know that there are ways to save money on heating their homes. We can give you detailed energy advice on how to switch energy companies and on energy saving tips and information about grants that are available.
