Babergh District Council has completed the purchase of a section of land in Great Cornard that will link the parish to Sudbury via a Stour-side footpath. The land had previously been owned by the Long Melford and Sudbury Angling Association, which agreed to sell the land to Babergh. To mark the purchase Babergh’s A 15th-century church in Suffolk has embarked on an £800,000 restoration project to conserve and protect its Leader, Cllr John Ward, visited the area and was joined by Great Cornard councillors Tony Bavington, Tom unique collection of medieval stained glass. Continued from the cover... Michael Archer, the former keeper of ceramics and glass at the Victoria & Albert Museum, says: ’The donor figures are most remarkable. They are nearly life-size, which means they are extraordinarily detailed, giving us a very realistic insight into the costumes of the late 15th century. As well as the detail, the sheer quantity of these figures makes it a very special and extremely rare collection.’ The first of eight medieval windows, including a rare Pietà image of the Virgin Mary and the crucified Christ, has now been painstakingly cleaned at the Cathedral Studios, a specialist glass conservation studio attached to Canterbury Cathedral. The director of the studios, Léonie Seliger, says: ‘The fact that the Pietà survives in Long Melford is truly extraordinary, and probably due simply to its location in the clerestory. Maybe the iconoclasts did not have good enough eyesight to spot it, or not a long enough ladder. Whatever the reason, it is an exceedingly rare survival. I have found only three other English examples.’ Her team have cleaned off centuries of grime and corrosion, to let the images in glass shine almost as brightly as when they were first installed. The initial phases of the restoration are being financed by a generous bequest from a US descendant of John Clopton. This will pay for the restoration of at least one more window. The project also includes adding an additional layer of handblown, laminate glass to protect the glass from further corrosion. The church is now attempting to raise £500,000 to finance the remaining work, which will take up to five years to complete. ‘Visitors come from far and wide to admire the beauty and craftsmanship of our medieval stained glass,’ says Rev Matthew Lawson, rector of Long Melford. ‘I’m delighted that we can now start displaying it to its full potential, for the first time in hundreds of years, with the aid of this generous legacy. ‘Handsome as the bequest was, it is not enough to cover the full restoration project, but we hope that a grass-roots fundraising drive will raise the profile of the glass, both locally and further afield, to make us all more appreciative of this wonderful national treasure.’

The Mayor writes... Hello Everyone, Well as you might expect the pace of events speeded up over the last few weeks. Not everything was Christmas related but most were. Not related to Christmas, Mayors often attended concerts in the town given by the various singing, playing and acting groups. Two that I attended in November were those of the Sudbury Choral Society and the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. Although Hilary attended these it was not in the usual capacity as a spectator at in the audience. No, in Choral society Hilary was singing and I was playing in the orchestra (French Horn). Again, for the Orchestra both Hilary and I were in the orchestra (Hilary ‘plays bassoon) and no I don’t wear the chain when I’m playing as it rattles a bit. Going along to events like these brings home the high standard of amateur activities there are in and around Sudbury and I would certainly recommend going along to these types of event. At the beginning of November, I gave a talk on what a Mayor does to the group called Newstalk. This is a radio programme specifically for visually impaired people who can keep in touch with things through the radio. They talk about local, national and international events and I know these talks are well appreciated by their listeners. During November, a number of events took place as part of the traditional build up to Christmas. The start of the process is the Mayor’s Christmas card competition. Entries are invited from all the primary schools in the Sudbury area and this year there were about 200 entries. It was a tough but interesting process to go through them to select the winner. This year the winner were Emily Oddie of St Gregory’s Primary Schools. The two prizes for winning were having the design printed on all the Christmas cards sent out by the Mayor (including one to the Queen) and the chance to press the plunger to switch on the Christmas lights with the Mayor at the end of November. The Christmas lights switch on went very well. There must have been at least 2,000 people in the market square at lights on time. Once the lights were on there was a chance to go on the funfair in the market place, attend the many craft fair stalls in St Peters, stroll around the Old Market Place and down North St to visit the stalls and open shops there. The Town Council staff put in a big effort to make this a success and from what I saw the achieved that very well. It’s a big plus for Sudbury. The traditional Christmas Tree fair took place at St Peter. There were 99 trees on show that had been meticulously dressed by all sorts of organisations in the Sudbury. On this occasion it was me who got switch on the tree lights after the normal countdown. I can confirm that switching on is a very satisfactory thing to do – and the trees looked spectacular. On the Council front not much to report from the main Council meeting as there was no meeting in December. The support committees like Planning and Leisure and Highways have been meeting to keep the nitty-gritty of the Town Council business moving forward. When you read this Christmas and New Year will be passed but I hope you had a great holiday season and that you have a successful New Year. Robert

With all the busy activities of recent weeks behind them, Sudbury Rotarians are delighted to report that Father Christmas had a long queue of youngsters waiting to see him and his elves at the switch on of Sudbury’s Christmas Lights, that a very successful Schools’ Concert was held at the start of December with four local primary schools taking part, followed by a well-attended Christmas Tree Festival held in St Peter’s on Sudbury’s Market Hill. This year, for the first time, a total of 100 trees were booked. The Church looked magical, with the decorated trees all individually dressed and lit. The event raised over £4,000 to support Rotary Charities. Rotarians also braved the cold to invite more charity donations as they took part in street collections on the Thursday and Saturday prior to Christmas Day. Sudbury Rotary Father Christmas and one of Specialists in Cleaning Carpets, Upholstery, is incredibly grateful to all who give his elves at the switch-on of Curtains, Hard Flooring & Mattresses so generously in response to our Sudbury’s Christmas Lights. events and collections.

News from your Sudbury Arts Venue, The Quay Theatre Hello all! I can’t quite believe that it’s 2020. Weren’t we all supposed to be travelling through the skies in flying cars high-fiving the Jetsons on the way to the shops by now? Flying at all has become a hot potato of a subject – like most things we decide to do these days, choices are political to some degree. But, fear not, your apolitical local theatre has plenty in store this coming month to ensure that any choice of show you see will be the right choice! Films screening here in January will be the most talked about feature of last year, Joker, and the least surprising hit of last year, Downton Abbey! We are also hosting two independent film specials, The Light Side: A Journey with David Prowse (the best villain in the business – Darth Vader) and The Bikes of Wrath, where 5 ridiculously optimistic Australians follow the journey of Steinbeck’s Joad family, on bicycles, with less money than a train fair to Glasgow. That’s Oklahoma to California! They meet some amazing characters along the way, but I won’t spoil the ending by telling you whether they all make it or not. At least one of them though IS hoping to make it over to the UK for the screening. For drama we have The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Dead Men’s Eyes (M R James) both from touring professionals at the top of their craft. Music-wise we have one of the most enjoyable shows of the year, performing over two nights, Robbie Gladwell and Friends take over the stage (and the wing and the dressing room, and possibly too often, the bar) for an entertaining night of great music and laughs from many different performers. All this plus Live Cinema, history and Buddy Holly! (sort of…)

Giving the visitor more choice Sudbury Heritage Centre is attracting a growing number of visitors keen to try an amenity that offers a choice of windows into the history of the town. History Shorts is based on a large, touchsensitive, digital display screen with a library of local history topics. With the touch of a button you can choose a slide show from a list of 17. Each lasts about 10 minutes Local historian Anne Grimshaw with poster for and is well illustrated. her recent addition to History Shorts library The choice includes the railway story, fighting fires, the Peasants’ Revolt, the history of Belle Vue house, a Zeppelin attack and the town’s weaving industry. New on the screen is Sudbury’s Role 120 years ago in the Boer War with both its heroes and a man regarded as its cause. All the presentations are the work of local historians and volunteer researchers, enabling them to show the results of their research to a broader public. Some have delved into niche, but non-the-less interesting, subjects such as the life of a local who fought at the battle of Waterloo and the son of a farm worker who became a Spitfire hero.

Barely drawing breath from the pantomime season, Sudbury Dramatic Society based at The Quay Theatre in Sudbury begin rehearsals for their March production Somerset Maugham’s For Service Rendered which is on from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th March 2020 For Services Rendered is a gripping ensemble piece about the long-term effect of World War 1 on an upper-middle class family in the 1930s. Men have been regurgitated out of military service without the skills to deal with civilian life and women have been left with a dwindling chance of realising the life they had been brought up to expect; namely a husband and children. The ones who have achieved that state, perhaps hastily, are now repenting at leisure. For Services Rendered is directed by the husband and wife team of Helen and Neil Arbon who have jointly been responsible for many successful SDS productions at The Quay Theatre, as well as both being involved in the recent pantomime. For Services Rendered is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th March 2020at 7.45pm and tickets are available now from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.sudburydramatic.com

Couples save up to 21% on Wills

Suffolk law firm, Holmes & Hills Solicitors offers a Will writing service which provides couples with a saving of between 16% and 21% on legal fees, when making Mirror Wills at the same time. Why make a Will at all? Quite simply, if you do not make a Will the law says who inherits your estate. Most people assume that everything would pass automatically to their partner but this is not necessarily so. Your estate may pass to the person or persons you would not want to inherit. Making a Will ensures that the people you want to benefit when you die receive your estate. Couples often wish to receive advice as follows: • How to plan for future care needs • How to provide for children and grandchildren • Provide for children from a former relationship • How to update an existing Will • What steps they should take if choosing to leave out a beneficiary from their Will • How to set up a trust • How to protect your contribution to the purchase price of a property when you live with someone else* • How to give away an inheritance in a tax efficient manner** If you have children from a previous relationship: Making a Will is very important for couples who may have children from previous relationships and want to ensure that their money will pass to their own family. This can be a sensitive issue between couples – but it doesn’t have to be so. It is possible to draft a Will making sure that your spouse/ partner is provided for in the event of your death and ensuring that ultimately your family will inherit your estate. No better time to make a Will – save up to 21% Married couples and long-term couples save between 16-21% when making Mirror Wills, with the exact saving being subject to the complexity of the affairs. There really is ‘no time like the present’ for you and your partner to make your Wills. What is a Mirror Will? If you and your partner wish to make Wills, that are in the same terms, these are called ‘Mirror’ Wills. Each Will is a separate legal document but the content is identical and ‘mirrors’ the other. These Wills often provide that the estate of each individual is left to the surviving spouse and then to other beneficiaries on their death. Make your Wills To enquire about making your Wills, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors in Sudbury, on 01787 275275. *Declaration of Trust **Deed of Variation Couples save 16%-21% when making Mirror Wills at the same time

January 2020 Update The Just Talk charity was formed in 2016 in Sudbury, Suffolk. Unfortunately, the charity was dispersed in March 2019 because the local council was offered full rental for the building the charity resided in. A few months later a new dynamic initiative was born from the dispersing of the Just Talk charity by Glenda D. Roberts – an accredited psychotherapist and media spokesperson for the BACP (British association for counselling and psychotherapy) along with her team of trained counsellor’s organisation – the idea of an affordable service with a Bridge Fund. Our main aim is to eradicate the stigmas that surround mental health and with that ideas, the continuation of work carried out within the charity evolved of a service that is much needed in the aiding of emotional well-being. One that provides the whole community with a counselling service where everyone who seeks its service will be able to access no matter who they are or what they earn. Emotional well-being impacts on your quality of life immensely, even affecting your performance in workplace. Glenda and her team who are an already well-established team of qualified therapists all share the same common belief that everyone has the right to feel heard, be listened to and have someone they can trust and confide in. With this belief came the idea of JustTalk2019 affordable counselling which would be provided through Glenda’s established business ExploringU Counselling, giving people who would not otherwise be given the opportunity of an accessible therapy service. The Bridge fund idea shortly followed, an idea which would enable free counselling for those who are not in a position to pay anything at all for their therapy which would be topped up by local business sponsors who are then kept up to date through data base and progress reports once a month. Glenda’s initiative to develop the first ever counselling café was then brought to life in collaboration with Real Talk and the Midi Music Company a charity based in Deptford, South East London in their anti-knife crime campaign and shortly after, leading to the idea of producing a series of mental health awareness films in order to help individuals gain more knowledge about issues that are normally not spoken about. With that idea in mind, the first film in the series – ‘Dying to be Famous’ was produced by Glenda D Roberts, our main audience for this film is young adults and teenagers. The film shows the effects of social media on the well-being of young people and engages with them to raise their awareness about the dangers and negative impacts that social media trolling can have. In order for the film to demonstrate its best effects, we are aiming to show this film to schools, colleges and universities in order to help young adults and teenagers. The film had its first screening on the 16th of November 2019 in London for celebrities and influencers which turned out to be a huge success. Since Sudbury, Suffolk is where JustTalk2019 – our affordable counselling service – was born, we are collaborating with the Quay Theatre Sudbury so that our local community can watch the film and gain some important information about the effects that social media has on young people. For the morning showings which are at 11.30 and 14.00 on the 6th and the 10th February 2020, schools and colleges will be welcomed to book in with us via our email info@justtalk2019. com. Or directly from the Quay Theatre https://www.quaysudbury.com/event/film-specialdying-be-famous-thu-2020-02-06-1930 The evening showings are on the same days, at 19.30. Tickets for these showings will be available for the general public at the Quay Theatre. Moreover, exclusively offered to our viewers is the opportunity to have a 30-minute-session with the ExploringU Counselling and JustTalk2019 team, where all questions will be answered by our trained psychotherapists. A FREE well-being tool as featured in the film where Ruby Piper (our main character) uses it whilst debating whether to phone JustTalk2019 about getting therapy was invented to help make people become aware of self-care. The tool explains four important categories consisting of mindset, sleep, nutrition and exercise and suggests ways that would help people to achieve their best qualities. These will be provided free of charge when you come for the screenings of the movie. They are also provided at the JustTalk2019 Centre, 54 Station Road, Sudbury, CO10 2SP. Recently, it has also been made available via our website (justtalk2019.com). You can also grab a limited edition Poster for £1.00. Monies raised go to support those who cannot afford to pay for Therapy. Tickets are available starting from only £3 and the profit which is gained from the screenings of the film will go towards our Bridge fund. Since we strongly believe that everyone needs some time off and have someone to talk to about all of their concerns and problems, we are working hard to provide people with the appropriate support, we are striving to make counselling available and accessible for everyone. Therefore, for coming to the film, not only will you gain more awareness about social media, you are also contributing to its future ventures. Dying to be Famous

@The Quay theatre_Sudbury A short film followed by audience discussion with a Qualified Counsellor covering issues shown in the film.

Personal Message from Richard As we start 2020 the hardships of 2019 are not far behind us with greater demand than ever on the charities that support those in need, I would like to extend a massive vote of thanks to all those who have done so much to help those in need. This is also the season of extreme weather, rain, floods, fog, ice and snow. If you have to venture out during severe weather conditions I urge you to take care and take reasonable precautions to stay safe. During a recent vacancy on Long Melford Parish Council I was co-opted back into service following a somewhat brief retirement from local council work. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during the year as I strive to support our community.

Impact of General Election Moratorium The election moratorium started on 6 November, and consequently a number of decisions and meetings at Suffolk County Council have been delayed. The 2020/21 budget proposals would normally have been scrutinised in early December, but this has now been postponed to a meeting of the Scrutiny Committee on 7 January. Following this, the budget proposals will go to Cabinet on 28 January and finally to Council on 13 February. The Council is unable to launch consultations during the moratorium, so the long-awaited children’s centre consultation will need to wait until the new year. We still don’t have any information about when exactly this consultation will be ready. Similarly, the council will not be able to publish the first draft of the Ipswich Northern Bypass business case until after the election.

The Hive Centre at Sudbury URC The Trustees of Hive are delighted to report that they have recently been granted Planning Consent for Change of Use for the former United Reformed Church in Sudbury, in order to create a multi-use community facility. This brings the Trustees of Hive a step closer in their plans to create a facility to offer medium to large sized rooms for use by a number of voluntary and community sector organisations, several of whom used the building before its closure at the end of 2017. There are conditions within the consent requiring the installation of secure bicycle storage and, in the interests of residential amenity of neighbouring properties, that events occur only between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. each day, that there is no amplified music without a noise assessment first being submitted and approved and, if appropriate, acoustic insulation or other remedial measures are taken, and no commercial use should be made of the join kitchen an extra Spring into action and uswithout at our ventilation and odour suppression scheme being installed. Fund-raising to close Care the gap Day continues and a Crowdfunding Hearing in Hadleigh for aappeal was launched a few weeks’ ago – you can see more details on-line complimentary hearing assessment... and a short video about the project and some of its potential hirers on https://.acf.crowdfunder.co.uk/sudburyhive-urc. The Crowdfunding appeal closes on 21 April 2020, but donations will also be most welcome at any time. If anyone is able to help th with funding this much-needed facility, so that it has a secure and exciting future for our community, please send your donation (cheques payable to Hive), at 1 The Croft, Sudbury, CO10 1HN. All donations will be acknowledged. The Church and its halls offer a variety of rooms which can be used to serve the needs of voluntary and community organisations and other groups in and around the town. Around 20 organisations have expressed a wish to use the building to support their activities, as well as groups which previously used the halls for their events and rehearsals. The former URC is designated an Asset of Community Value until July Complimentary hearing assessments 2023. Significant funding has already been promised to enable Hive to purchaseand the building but around £50,000 still needs to be raised. expert advice (usually £20) Hive has made an offer to the Eastern Region Synod of the URC and hope that this will be successful. With so many groups in need of this Personalised recommendations for kind of accommodation, not available elsewhere, Hive hopes that it will be possible to agree the purchase early next year. Yet another how we can improve your hearing winter with the building unheated and unrepaired will see further deterioration in its condition, and many people are keen to see the building back in use for the benefit of its community.
