Leisure centre throws open doors after £2.4m refurb The new-look Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury has officially opened its doors following a £2.4m extension and refurbishment – providing leisure facilities for the town for years to come. The new facilities are part of a multi-million pound investment by Babergh District Council, with its leisure partner Abbeycroft Leisure, to modernise leisure provision in the town. Funds also include £100,000 of Community Infrastructure Levy collected from developers building new homes in Sudbury, to ensure local development also supports community facilities. The leisure centre works, carried out by Beardwell Construction, include: • a two-storey extension to house a new community and exercise room and dance studio
•
extended and refurbed 100 station gym, increasing capacity from 40 stations • improved fitness changing rooms • new poolside wet changing and toilet facilities • improved lighting, décor, and mechanical equipment New cycle storage has also been installed at the front of the building, meaning members can access and use the facilities more easily by bike and supporting a shift towards sustainable travel options, and the council’s environmental ambitions.

For the final meeting of 2020, members met on-line to celebrate a pre-Christmas lunch, with many taking part in a festive entertainment, including a Cryptic Christmas Songs quiz, poetry, jokes, riddles, ‘Call my Bluff’ and even a musical quiz. Great fun was had by all who attended the Zoom meeting, including our District Governor from Saffron Walden, and guests from Donaghadee Rotary Club in Northern Ireland and a member from Colchester Centurion, soon to join the Sudbury Club when he moves to this area. President Sandra Armitage had devised the programme with others from Rotary Council and the event was most ably compered by Mike Killoran, who added numerous ‘cracker’ jokes and kept the programme running smoothly. The final activities of the year were when Rotary elves and their helpers took part in street collections for local charities (including the Kernos Centre and St Nicholas Hospice) on 20 and 24 December. During 2020, Rotary has been celebrating 110 years of ‘Doing Good Around the World’. Money donated by Rotary Clubs across the globe has been used to transform communities and change lives, both close to home and around the world. Rotary seeks to advance understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. International students supported by Rotary in this area
Looking Ahead When Club meetings resume in January, the programme of speakers will begin again, with Phil Godfrey on Antiphospholipid Syndrome on 4 January and on 25 January Roger Green being interviewed by Malcolm Offord. Roger is a Paul Harris Fellow (a Rotary award offered to people who have given outstanding service to their communities), is an accomplished musician and has had a fascinating career. The Club is also looking forward to having international Rotary scholars join future meetings. These students attend either Cambridge University, University of East Anglia, University of the Arts in Norwich or Anglia Ruskin University, and study for Master’s degrees in areas such as Peace and Conflict One of last year’s scholars: Resolution, Economic Grinny from Botswana Development, Education (Photo: Tony Platt) across the world and social issues both in developed and in developing countries (e.g. domestic violence). They are outstanding scholars who are funded by Rotary to pursue their studies in the UK. This year seven international students are studying at universities in this area. If you wish to contact Sudbury Rotary Club – perhaps with a view to becoming more involved in Rotary meetings and activities, please leave a message on the Club telephone (07787 470876). You could try this for free via a Zoom link to begin meeting other members of the Club! When groups begin to meet ‘normally’ again, your organisation might wish to invite a Rotary speaker to talk in more detail about the work of Sudbury Rotary and the international work which Rotarians do to benefit those in need. The promotional video “A year in the life of Sudbury Rotary” can also be shown, tracing just some of the activities with which members can be involved. The film can also be seen by accessing the Club’s web site: www.sudburyrotary.com. Lesley DJ Dunstone Jan 19.qxp_Layout 1 17/12/2018 Rotarian 13:24 Page 1 Ford-Platt

The Mayor writes... I am sure like me you are getting a bit fed up with this on/off approach over the Corona Virus, the new strain is causing more panic it seems in those that are advising us than before and the indecision is getting worse. For many, Christmas has been a disaster with arrangement being made and then cancelled, panic buying is back on the agenda again as a result of many countries cancelling flights and travel arrangements in trying to prevent the new strain from spreading from our shores. With lorries blocking the Ports where’s it all going to end, thank goodness the scientists have come up with an antidote that hopefully will kill off this dreadful virus, as I write I am waiting for my turn, I can’t wait. I had pleasure in taking part in the selection for the Christmas window display, so many shops took part with so many outstanding efforts, so congratulations to every shop that as took part, at the time of writing I am not sure of the winner and I am glad that it was not just my choice as it was difficult to choose between many. My report is very short this time because we are still in difficult times, visiting Care Homes, presentation of Vouchers on Christmas morning have had to be curtailed, the Town Council has had to consider some important matters recently, the Advice centre at the Town Hall is under threat, the selling off of Belle Vue House and part of the land around it, and off road car parking charges are back on the agenda, so roll on 2021 in the hope for a better outcome. I would like to conclude by hoping that you all made the best of a very disjointed Christmas and that 2021 bring us more happiness than the year we have left behind! All the best, Jack Owen Town Mayor for Sudbury

100th business joins the Virtual High Street
With the countdown to Christmas firmly underway, shoppers in and around Sudbury have even more choice as the Virtual High Street welcomes its one hundredth business. The hundredth business to be added, Baked by Humphries, run by sisters Georgina and Jessie, offers a selection of delicious cakes, brownies, cupcakes and more from their stall at Sudbury Market and they hope to reach even more customers and be part of the local business community through the Virtual High Street. As retailers and restaurants reopen following the national lockdown, the Virtual High Street provides another opportunity for customers to view products and order from home. Over the recent national lockdown, the Virtual High Street received over 700 visits in just one week, many of which were to businesses that were forced to close their doors as part of Covid-19 restriction measures. Jessie Humphries of Baked by Humphries commented: “We joined the virtual high street in support of all local independent businesses and are excited to be the 100th business added to the website. This year it’s more important than ever to shop local where you can and by doing so the ripple effect of those actions will be seen for months, maybe even years to come. Shopping local is personal, it has heart and soul and that’s one thing we don’t want the high streets around us to lose.” The Virtual High Street is home to a variety of independent shops, restaurants, cafes, and market stall owners. Created as part of the Sudbury Vision partnership and supported by Babergh District Council and Sudbury Town Council, the aim of the Virtual High Street is to help businesses keep connected with their customers and encourage them to shop local. Over 50% of businesses on the Sudbury Virtual High Street had no website before joining and the platform gives them a digital presence for the first time. continued next page☞

The site allows businesses to enhance their in-store offer by introducing services such as pre-order or click and collect. Each store page can be personalised to include product listings, gallery and store opening times on their personalised store page. There is also an option to include online purchasing and delivery depending on the retailer’s requirements. Commenting on the Virtual High Street, Cllr Michael Holt, cabinet member for economic growth said: “I am delighted that so many businesses in Sudbury have decided to join the Virtual High Street, especially those who have not had an online presence before. We know how challenging this year has been and our vision was to find an innovative way to help connect our local businesses with their customers who may not be able to visit the high street as often as they would like. “As we start counting down to what is likely to be a very different Christmas this year, I hope that the Virtual High Street is useful not only for shoppers but also for our local businesses.” Businesses can sign up to the Virtual High Street for free during the pilot period and as the site grows more functionality will be added. This could include activity and events listings and high street promotions. It is also hoped that the Virtual High Street will expand to include other town centre high streets across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. Rachel Price, town centre manager, Sudbury Town Council said: “In just over a month since the Virtual High Street re-launched, it is fantastic that we have doubled the number of businesses on the platform. There is a real sense of community in Sudbury, and this year has really seen many more shoppers realising the impact of shopping and supporting local and Specialists in Cleaning Carpets, Upholstery, making a commitment to do so more frequently. Perrywood Sudbury spreads some Christmas cheer in the local community
Last week, in a bid to end the year with some festive cheer, Perrywood Sudbury launched its annual Christmas cheer campaign. The garden centre, which is dedicated to supporting the local community, teamed up with The Befriending Scheme and Sudbury Hive to deliver twenty planters to individuals who, for one reason or another, deserve some Christmas cheer. One of the Christmas cheer deliveries was to Audrey, 83, who lives in Sudbury. Audrey cares for her husband, 84, who is bed bound. She was so grateful to receive her planted container. Shirley Moore, CEO, The Befriending Scheme, comments: “We were really pleased to help Perrywood Garden Centre with their Christmas Cheer campaign this year, it was such a lovely idea and we knew the gesture would be appreciated by the recipients.” Debbie Wrigley, Communications Manager, Perrywood Garden Centre comments: “We are delighted to support the local community with our Christmas cheer campaign. This is a wonderful accolade to a man that dedicated ng the people of Suffolk. so many years of faithful and committed service featuri to the photography He will always be remembered as one of Suffolk finest sons. He was of Peter Cutts passionate about the county and Babergh. It is also testament to the legacy that he leaves behind, and I consider it to privilege to have served only Thatched Hadleigh’s alongside him and to have learnt so much from him.HomeHe will be missed.” Councillor Kathryn Grandon, Chair of Babergh District Council said: “I am thrilled that Nick’s legacy to Suffolk has been recognised in this way. It is a very deserving memory to a man that was respected and admired by so many for his wise counsel over the years. His service to the council was only part of his community role, he had a great interest in everything to do with Suffolk and played a key role including the Bury St Edmund’s cathedral Millennium project and as president of St Elizabeth hospice. News from your Sudbury Arts Venue, The Quay Theatre
Hello all! It’s been a while hasn’t it?! The Quay had to shut its doors back in March 2020 and they haven’t opened to the public since. Thankfully, we were able to use the furlough scheme to Page 1 Project15_Layout 1 20/02/2020 13:41 keep people employed and most of our small team have been able to begin work again for the last 2 months. We have had to, so far, cancel or reschedule over ONE HUNDRED shows and events. That, in itself has been a mammoth task and we haven’t seen the end of that yet! Some funding has enabled us to keep busy whilst closed, offering live recorded content on our sister website built especially for our shutdown – if you haven’t already had a look please do visit https://online. quaysudbury.com - . There is a lot to see and enjoy, all for free on the site, from History Talks to Live Music, Poetry, Children’s content, Plays and Amateur Dramatics. If you enjoy anything on that site, please do offer a donation if you can using the donate button. A HUGE thank you to our wonderful customers who have been so very supportive with donations, offers of help and best wishes. That has really kept us determined to battle on and come back with a bang – when we can! We will, undoubtedly, have to turn to the community for support in 2021 and we hope that you agree that we cannot let our theatre fade away. It’s important to fight for the things that may not feel essential but are fundamental in our understanding of a life well lived and one that is rich in experiences, joy and culture. Just Talk 2019 – supporting mental health
Next steps
As the CEO of a Sudbury based counselling service, in Suffolk, I wanted to share with you our journey and vision for the future in supporting mental health across our community. JustTalk2019 was established as an independent, non-profit making, arm of my existing company, ExploringU whose focus is to support those with brain trauma and injury. In addition to supporting those with brain injury, I had become increasingly aware of the need to establish a service, that would offer accessible and affordable counselling to all who needed it. In 2016, I set up a Community Café, in the heart of Sudbury. The Café sold products such as t- shirts to help fund the service, but the main purpose was to provide a safe environment where people could buy a coffee and sit down with a therapist or trainee therapist for counselling. Clients arranged an appointment or assessment in the shop, then went through to the Café for their treatment. The Café had a purpose, clients were coming to access low-cost, openended therapy – £5 for a 60- minute session. It was called the Just Talk Campaign. Very quickly, word spread and we had so many coming to the café for therapy, often travelling from London or Essex to get help. Young people from the age of fourteen came to see a therapist and the eldest client was in their eighties. Everybody felt comfortable in the setting. We received a letter from the House of Commons commending the team’s work – we were also contacted by many universities and colleges that wanted to collaborate. Soon the Café had charitable status. We worked with 13 universities & colleges to get trainee counsellors on board and both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Counsel for Psychotherapy (UKCP) embraced the concept of the service shop and Counselling Café as ‘a new way of counselling.’ But then, unfortunately, we lost our building as a private tenant was willing to pay considerably more to rent out the building and the Café had to find new premises. This resulted in relocating clients back to my existing centre.
Covid-19 response & the future
You will be well aware that Covid-19 has highlighted real issues around mental health, and although support is available through the National Health service, wait times can be impossibly long. You will also be aware that private therapy can be accessed by those who are able to pay, up to £60 per session. For many in our community this makes it inaccessible. A recent report from Public Health England has provided the following data: • Mental distress was 8.1% higher in April 2020 than it was between 2017 and2019 • Adults with pre-existing mental health conditions have reported higher levels of anxiety, depression and loneliness than adults without pre-existing mental health conditions. • A greater proportion of adults with low household income or relative socioeconomic position reported symptoms of anxiety and depression than adults with higher household income or socioeconomic position. • One study found that adverse experiences, such as COVID-19 illness, financial difficulties or difficulty accessing food and medicine, were having a larger impact on mental health and wellbeing in adults in a lower socioeconomic position. • Two studies found that having a low income was associated with loneliness and increasing levels of loneliness during the lockdown. • COVID-19: mental health and wellbeing surveillance reporthttps:// www.gov.uk /government/publications/covid-19-mental-healthand-wellbeing-sur veillance -repor t /2-impor tant-findings-sofar#introduction continued next column☞
We believe that everyone has the right to speak to a person they can confide in with complete confidentiality. My dream & vision is to bring back our wonderful Counselling Cafe in Sudbury, as a model which can be replicated all over the country. These are the details: • We were open Monday - Saturday, and between 10-15 people dropped into the Café every day, aged from 14yrs-89yrs • We worked with approximately 50volunteers • We offered art sessions and relaxation therapy – providing a full holistic service around well-being • We made full use of a 3 storey building • We had a 2 week turnaround to access therapy • We totally supported our community • We broke down the barriers associated with wanting to seek therapy • We made it accessible to all When the Café closed, we moved back to my existing premises, we now offer: • 20-30 counselling sessions a week,we are open 50 weeks of the year • We complete, on average, assessments for 6 new clients each week – and this is increasing. • We offer exemplary placements to students, with robust support in place (please see comments below) – we have received awards from APA for best practice in supporting those placements. • We have supported the training of 80 students since 2016. • Above all, we made a positive difference to the lives of so many! I am passionate about continuing to offer affordable counselling to our community, reaching those most in need. In order to do this we need to ensure that we maintain a level of funding which can be used solely for this purpose – and I have set up the JustTalk Bridge Fund specifically for this purpose. Although I truly feel that the most effective way forward will be to re-open the Café, I want to move forward in a measured way with the aim of continuing to offer targeted, subsidised support to as many as need it. Anticipating life getting back to some sense of normality in the Spring 2021, now is the time to start planning how we can make this happen. I therefore see our move forward being in two stages: • To ensure we have funding available which enables us to subsidise counselling sessions to all who need it. • To move to a new, larger, premises which will enable more one to one counselling sessions to take place, alongside the provision of the drop in café which offers a holistic programme of therapeutic support. I believe that Sudbury could lead the way as a beacon of best practice in supporting our community. I am very keen to work in partnership with other local services and organisations and would love to have the opportunity to look at how we can work together to make this happen for our community. Will you join us? Ubuntu

Online radio drama club to help address rural isolation in Suffolk A suffolk arts charity is launching a new online radio drama listening club next week, to help address rural isolation in Suffolk. The club is part of ‘Make, Do & Friends’, Suffolk Artlink’s programme of creative activities aimed at adults (55+). Since lockdown, the charity has moved much of the Make, Do & Friends programme online. The radio drama club is the next in a series of creative activities that are being made available digitally to people living in Suffolk’s rural communities. Suffolk artist, Lynn Whitehead, will be delivering the radio drama listening clubs. She explains: “A radio drama club is a bit like a book club, but without the homework! “We choose a radio play, listen together online and then chat about its themes, the acting, sound effects, and anything else that we’ve found interesting about it! “It’s a really great way to stay connected with others, whilst finding new inspiration for things to enjoy at home as the evenings draw in. “Even when we can’t meet up with others in person, we can still share a relaxed activity together and then have a chat. You’ll have to make your own tea and bring your own cake – but you won’t have to change out of your slippers.” The online radio drama listening club sessions are free, and take place on Mondays, 11am - 12.30pm on the following dates: 11th January, 25th January, 8th February For more information, or to book a place, please contact Candida or Carrie on mdf@suffolkartlink.org.uk or call 07857 002974. Suffolk Artlink’s ‘Make, Do & Friends’ project is running until the end of March 2021. Full information about the creative programme, including the radio drama listening club, can be found at www.makedoandfriends.co.uk. Make, Do & Friends is delivered in partnership with DanceEast and the Rural Coffee Caravan.
Council pledges continued town presence
Babergh District Council has reassured residents that it will continue to have a town centre presence in Sudbury following changes next year. Since 2017, the council’s customer services have been provided from Sudbury Town Hall through a contract with Sudbury Town Council – but the contract is due to expire in March, with Babergh District Council looking to review the way it provides its service to ensure it best meets the needs of residents. This includes plans to improve digital services, providing access to information and services round the clock – but the council also recognises the need to maintain a face-to-face customer service presence in Sudbury, to continue to support residents who don’t have access or skills to use digital services. Cllr Lee Parker, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for customers, digital transformation & improvement, said: “We would like to recognise the quality of the service that residents have received through our relationship with Sudbury Town Council and would like to reassure everyone we will continue to have a face-to-face customer service presence in Sudbury when our contract with the town council comes to an end in March.” Further details of future partners and location for Babergh District Council’s customer services in Sudbury are expected in the new year.
