Improvements to Belle Vue Park welcomed by local community
Over 250 people in Sudbury and the surrounding area contributed to Babergh District Council’s public consultation about the future of Belle Vue Park held earlier this autumn. The aim of the public consultation was to understand the views and opinions of local people and users of the park based on design concepts for a new park entrance, café, toilets, and other park facilities such as a relocated play area and improved accessibility. During the two-day event held in Belle Vue Park, visitors viewed the concept designs in person with 190 submitting their feedback on the future of the park. Following the event, the designs were displayed in Borehamgate Precinct and online allowing a further 93 responses to be submitted through the website. Overall, the plans for improving the entrance of the park were welcomed with 73% of respondents stating that an improved and accessible entrance would increase park usage.
66% of respondents visit the park weekly (30%) or monthly (36%) with only 6% visiting daily and the remaining respondents visiting occasionally. When asked whether the improvement would increase frequency and length of visits, 72% agreed. The feedback, which included space for free comment, will be reviewed and used to inform a masterplan for the park which can be delivered over the next 5 years. A number of elements were included within the survey and respondents were asked to rank their importance. Having new toilets with accessible features was ranked as the most important factor of park improvements followed by improved play area and equipment (for all ages) and new café.

When thinking about the new café, the top priority was location and integrated toilet facilities followed by sightlines to the play areas and indoor and outdoor spaces (with accessibility for wheelchairs and buggy users). Views were also sought on connectivity around the park with accessible routes ranking as the top priority followed by attractions and activities (such as sensory and formal gardens) and seating stops along the route. A significant element of the masterplan will be the new entrance to the park that will create a space that is welcoming and accessible for all and the introduction of a new café and toilet facilities. A planning application for these elements will be submitted by the end of the year. Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said: “I would like to thank those people that took the time to come along to the consultation event and share their views both in person and online on the future of the Belle Vue Park. All the feedback and responses will now be reviewed and used to inform a masterplan for the park that will ensure the park will welcome visitors for many years to come.” Over the last few years, Belle Vue Park has received significant investment including a new multi-use games area and skatepark as well as new equipment and landscaping in the children’s play area. Funding for the new park entrance and other park improvements will come from up to 100% of the receipt of the sale of Belle Vue House and part of the old swimming pool site as agreed by Babergh District Council cabinet last year. From the Spring of 2022, under current government plans, separating married couples will be able to divorce without one party having to allege fault. The timescales for divorcing a spouse and the ability for one spouse to obstruct a divorce will also change. Currently, for a couple to divorce, one person is required to accept responsibility for the relationship breaking down. Or, if neither person is willing to accept responsibility, they must be separated for a period of two years (where both individuals agree to the divorce) or five years (where one spouse does not agree to the divorce). Other than in the event of extended separation, this means one party accepting that they have committed adultery, behaved unreasonably, or have disserted the other. For many years campaigners have demanded changes to divorce law, recognising that many couples simply drift apart; that no one party is to blame for the relationship breaking down, or that both spouses mutually and amicably want to separate. From April 2022, under current plans, divorcing couples will not be required to apportion blame or wait a period of two or five years of separation to pass to be able to commence divorce proceedings. Under the proposed changes, couples will be able to apply for a divorce simply because their marriage has broken down, paving the way for a mutually agreed and amicable divorce process. In situations where the divorce is not amicable or mutually agreed, proposed new legislation will also remove the ability for one spouse to prevent the other from divorcing them and in these and other cases will provide for reducing the time it takes to formally divorce, compared to current legislation. We have all experienced the most unusual two years. A roller-coaster ride with a multitude of problems and scenes of distress that have affected so many people, around our world. I cannot remember a time when there were so many dreadful events locally and abroad. As I was pondering on what to write, I remembered the words from a song sung by Lena Martell a few decades ago: ‘One day at a Time’ Yesterday, has gone, tomorrow may never be mine, just give me the strength to do what I have to do. We still are in the middle of a quagmire of uncertainty, so all we can do is to struggle through each day, continuing to wear our masks, wash our hands thoroughly, keep safe distances, elbow greet and cyber hugs with hope that before too long there will be a brighter future. My prayer for 2022. The Switching of the Town Christmas Lights was an enormous success due to the many hours of preparation by our Wardens who spent a whole weekend during the night to put the lights up: Teresa Elford our Events organiser and my super secretary, and Rachel Price our Town Centre Manager. The great crowd who attended and Matthew Dix, the winner of my Christmas Card Competition who helped me to switch them on. Our display of Christmas images created from old tyres in the grounds of St Peter’s Church have created an amazing amount of interest. Well done to Bradley Smith for the initial idea and everyone else for their brilliant creations. I was told by Bradley that we will be doing the same for Easter with tyre rabbits and other images. At this time of year, there’s a lot of speculation about the near future, and with everything changing so fast at the moment, and the surprise rise in interest rates – albeit a tiny one – what are we to expect? Winkworth’s Chief Executive Dominic Agace is optimistic. He sees a busy market ahead, particularly for prime central London, based on the steadily increasing activity over the past couple of months. He says: “There will be significant pickup. We are already seeing a 44 per cent increase in applicants for new properties in prime central London, compared to four per cent for suburban London and 36 per cent for country markets in the last quarter, compared to 2019 figures. This shows the buzz around properties, and will lead to price increases in central London outperforming the rest of the UK.” In South Kensington, Henry Synge from the Winkworth office is sanguine, seeing a busy lettings market as an indication of strong future sales. “People who decided to wait and see are now ready to buy - there is a sense of real optimism. Often seen as a precursor to a strong sales market, rentals were up by 100 per cent this autumn when compared to 2019, and over that period we saw the highest number of agreed tenancies in the past 10 years with the return of students, professionals and most encouragingly the corporates. The US executives are back in town.” This all indicates that sellers are set to remain in a strong position. Matthew Hallett, of Winkworth in Salisbury, is taking a philosophical approach, believing that we will continue to see enormous changes “as the market steadily moves from white-hot, COVID-affected conditions to a more considered mood in the new year”. Change is inevitable, he notes. “The market is in constant flux, just as individuals’ personal circumstances are. Buying a home at any stage of life is usually a thrilling event – if somewhat nerve-racking at times. Moving is often borne of new independence or marriage, cohabitation, birth, career success, fulfilled ambition, or even a fresh and exciting chapter brought on by empty nest relocation. According to Mark Wilkins, Managing Director of Winkworth’s local office in Long Melford, the mood outside London is positive too and he believes our region will benefit further still from the positive ripples emerging from the capital. He reports strong demand in the local area throughout the stamp duty holiday, which hasn’t dwindled since resulting in demand outstripping supply for the whole of autumn and into winter. He says: “I expect that we will see the boom of post-Christmas buyers early in the new year, with so many people re-appraising their lifestyle. COVID has meant more people are home-based for work and don’t need to be able to commute to an office full time anymore. Being at home for a long time in the first wave meant people really found out what was great – and what didn’t work so well for them – about their homes. As we go into another winter with the current challenges, I think it will only strengthen the desire to move home next year and re-evaluate lifestyles. Prices should continue to rise if demand outweighs supply.”

A pilot scheme to support small businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk has been hailed a success as it reaches its six month milestone Since its launch in July 2021, the Innovate Local initiative has supported 11 small businesses by providing a free pitch at either Stowmarket or Hadleigh markets for up to four weeks. In addition to a regular spot on the market, business owners were offered support to run a safe and successful stall, mentoring, business advice and training opportunities both before and after the pilot to help them maximise the opportunity. Feedback from the traders who have taken part in the scheme has been overwhelmingly positive with several investing in their own equipment to use on the market or other events. Following the initial success of the pilot, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are investigating ways to expand the Innovate Local scheme during 2022. Kelly Clark runs Apothekelly Skincare and is currently benefiting from Christmas shoppers visiting Hadleigh market. She spoke about being involved in the pilot Innovate Local scheme: “Meeting real customers face to face has been invaluable to my business, and I am so glad I decided to go ahead with the Innovate Local scheme and really feel that I am taking my business in the right direction. “Not only has my business got off to the best start possible, it has also given me the confidence to know how good my products are and how they have been received by the public first hand.” The Innovate Local scheme is part of a programme of activity to support high streets in the Districts post Covid-19. Commenting on the success in Hadleigh, Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council cabinet member for economic growth said: “It has been really rewarding to see local start-up businesses benefiting from the experience of being on a busy market and engaging with customers. It can be daunting to try and launch a new business, even before the impact of a pandemic, so I am delighted that the feedback from traders involved in the Innovate Local scheme has been so positive with many feeling more confident to take their business to the next stage.” The Innovate Local scheme is open to businesses that have been operating for less than a year and do not currently have a place on a market. As part of the Innovate Local Initiative, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils will also be opening an innovation hub in Eye and a pop-up hub in Sudbury later this year. The Stour Valley’s Spanish food shop: ‘sibarita’ attracted great interest at the Hadleigh Christmas Fayre Sibarita, Spain’s Organic Larder, participated, in the Hadleigh Christmas Fayre on Saturday, 4th December which, after a worryingly wet morning, turned bright and dry in time for the Fayre. Sibarita’s stall had a constant stream of visitors: a number of them had seen Sibarita’s adverts in our community magazines and made a beeline to the stall to meet Operations Manager, Jack Footitt. Jack was joined at the stall by Ed Martin, an experienced Chef, well known in the area. Ed’s enthusiasm, experience and practical product knowledge helped create a great deal of interest in the products displayed. We have written previously about health benefits of Sibarita’s wide range of Pulses: beans, chickpeas and lentils. As with many of Sibarita’s products, they go a long way to meeting the needs of vegetarians and vegans. However, Covid has highlighted the risks associated with low levels of zinc which can affect the body’s immune system, increasing the risk of dangerous infections, such as pneumonia. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As we face a new variant of Covid that is now apparently able to spread around society at a much greater pace than its predecessor, it is essential that everyone gets boosted. A total mobilisation of booster vaccine capability is required, driven by the PM from the centre and with all of us playing our part by getting boosted and encouraging everyone we know to do the same. The Prime Minister has therefore announced an Emergency Boost appeal to get all eligible adults boosted by the end of December, and I would strongly encourage all of my constituents to either attend walk-in vaccination centres or book their jab as soon as possible. Inevitably, trying to deliver such a scale of jabs will come with friction and strain. But we have already made great strides boosting the most vulnerable, and we should not underestimate the progress we have made, particularly locally. Nevertheless, the NHS will need to match its best vaccination day and then beat it day on day. To achieve this, some appointments may need to be postponed and 42 military planning teams will be deployed across every region, setting up additional vaccine sites and mobile units, extending opening hours so clinics are open 7 days a week. I recently had my own booster jab at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. The experience was very professionally and painlessly delivered, and I pay tribute to the NHS staff and volunteers on site doing their bit in the battle to beat Omicron. Sudbury Rotary’s Christmas Tree Festival in St Gregory’s Church in early December drew in hundreds of people to experience the magical spectacle of 60 trees, each decorated individually by its sponsor. The event made a surplus of around £2,000 which will be distributed to local charities, including Children from St Gregory CEVC Primary School Senior Choir singing for the Rotary Christmas Lunch. Sudbury Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the Christopher Centre. The final social event of the 2021 Rotary calender saw over 40 members and their guests enjoy a festive lunch at The Mill Hotel on 13 December, beginning with the Senior Choir of St Gregory Primary School singing seasonal songs and carols, led by Tom Cogan. A donation was made to the school to help with the costs of their music provision. The children were very excited to be presented with boxes of chocolates and sweets as a ‘thank you’ for their entertainment. Following the meal a table magician offered some fascinating tricks: none of us could work out how they were done! Street collections took place on several dates in December, with members braving the cold to invite donations from members of the public. All funds are given directly to Rotary charities, without any deductions for administration. Rotary President Rotary members put ‘service before self’, not Gloria Woods with only fund-raising to support local charities President-Elect but offering their time helping with events Jerry Crawford. and projects within the community. We are ordinary people working together to actively change lives locally and internationally. News from The Christopher Centre
Firstly, we would like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year. This month we are going to look back to thank those that have supported us during 2021 and look forward to new beginnings for 2022. Helen and I would like to thank all those organizations and individuals that have supported The Christopher Centre through 2021. Ordinary members of the community have always been very generous in supporting us although our donators prefer to remain anonymous, we are so grateful for their continued support. They ensure that everyone arriving at the centre recieves a warm welcome and a friendly smile. We would also like to give our thanks to all the groups,counsellors ,charities and individuals that have hired our rooms throughout 2021, it has been a pleasure to have you with us and we look forward to seeing you all in 2022. Memorable Events from 2021: It was a joy to be able to once again host The Freemans Tea Party after a break due to Covid. Lovely to see everyone together enjoying themselves. We have enjoyed hosting our monthly Community markets, meeting local people that have used the restrictions of Covid to learn new skills that have evolved into new businesses. Meeting local authors at our Community Markets was a very interesting and enjoyable experience. Our local historians David and Peter keeping local history alive. Adrian sharing stunning photography and his vast knowledge of the Sudbury Commonlands. Miriam’s excellent ‘who done it’s and Maureen’s200348 fab tale of cats made for a full and varied programme. December’s Advice Column I’m a bit anxious about going out into shops at the moment so I want to do more shopping online, but there’s been things in the news about delivery problems. I’m worried about not receiving things on time or packages being lost. What should I do if my parcel goes missing? When you’re online shopping, it’s not always clear whom to contact if things go wrong. As a customer, your contract is with the seller that you bought the item from. It’s the seller’s responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. They should chase the courier to find out what happened to your order if there’s a problem. If your parcel hasn’t arrived: • Check the delivery address you gave the seller, to make sure it’s correct. • Then contact the seller and ask where your order is. • If the seller claims they’ve delivered it or doesn’t know where it is, you can ask for a redelivery. You might be able to get a refund in some circumstances where the delivery time was essential, and you let the seller know ahead of time. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you can ask the seller to deliver the item to you again if the item wasn’t delivered either by an agreed date, or within a reasonable time - usually within 30 days. If the new delivery fails to come within a reasonable time, you can ask the seller for a refund. If your parcel was left somewhere: Another problem people face is when parcels get left in different places, for example outside or with a neighbour. If your item was delivered by Royal Mail: If Royal Mail left your package with a neighbour or in a certain place because you told them to, it’s not the seller or Royal Mail’s responsibility if it gets lost. If they leave it somewhere you hadn’t instructed, it’s the seller’s responsibility if it gets lost. You should contact the seller to ask for a redelivery or a refund. If the item was delivered by a courier: Check your terms and conditions or account details - they might include other places for delivery, like your porch or a neighbour’s house. If you agreed to them, it’s not the seller’s or courier’s responsibility if your order has gone missing. However, if you did not agree to this, then it’s the sellers responsibility if your order goes missing. If you ordered something from a private seller or you’re still having trouble after trying the tips above, you can contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 for help.

The last couple of years have been challenging and have brought home to many of us the importance of the natural world in our lives. During the Covid lockdowns many people discovered the benefits to their mental and physical health of being in the countryside. At Orchard Barn we have always believed that our own health is interconnected with the health of the environment, and whether we are working with wood, gardening or maintaining our site, we work with nature using only traditional low-tech methods and hand tools. This may take a lot longer, but brings many benefits to both us and the environment: • Increased fitness • Encourages teamwork • Develops skills • Quieter – we can talk or listen to the sounds of nature • Kinder on wildlife • Slower – mindful, and helps counteract stress • No polluting fumes • Greater satisfaction • Keeps traditional skills alive Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community and we aim to attract likeminded individuals to join us and share our work. It is their time, energy and expertise that underpins everything that we do – from conservation projects in our traditional orchard, to timber framing, peg or shingle making and maintaining our vegetable garden. Helen Rollason Cancer Charity Merry Christmas Market came to Trinity Park, Ipswich raising over £24,000! Shoppers flocked to Trinity Park Ipswich on Saturday 4th December for the very first Helen Rollason Cancer Charity Christmas Market raising over £24,000 for the charity! Funds raised will enable the charity to provide complimentary therapy treatments to 960 clients, helping us to enable quality of life while living with cancer. Showcasing over 90 small businesses from across the region, the market had an exciting variety of high-quality, unique gifts, decorations, crafts and festive foods to get guests in the Christmas spirit at Trinity Park in Ipswich (home of the Suffolk Show). The venue lent itself to a large well-ventilated undercover barn space to protect buyers and sellers from the cold conditions while guests wrapped up warm against the winter weather. Alongside the shopping stands, there was a range of food and drink stalls, serving up alcoholic beverages including festive hot drinks and mulled wine. Santa was due to make an appearance but sadly Mrs Claus was taken ill – we wish her better soon. There were smiles all round with games including name the bear, tombola and raffle with the chance to win £250! Karen Mitchell, Community Fundraiser for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity said: “We’ve been absolutely blown away by the amount of visitors that we’ve had at our Christmas Market – incredible for our first event! We’ve already received some fantastic feedback about the quality and variety of products on sale and everyone’s been really impressed with the food and drink on offer. “We need to raise almost £900,000 a year to provide our services so this event has helped us achieve that considerably. It’s been wonderful to see so many people coming out to show their support. Thank you to all our fantastic volunteers involved in planning, setting up, clearing away, our stallholders and everyone who attended the event, spent money or donated to the charity. “Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is dedicated to supporting people whose lives are touched by cancer. Our Support Centres offer a range of complementary therapies to patients in an environment of peace and tranquillity, including counselling, reflexology, aromatherapy, manual lymphatic drainage and support groups. “We support men and women with all types of cancer at all stages – whether newly diagnosed or longer-term, throughout treatment and after treatment is completed. We rely on donations, fundraising and money raised through our charity shops to continue operating our Support Centres.”

Kersey Through the Centuries – a new and exciting history Heart Support ofUpbeat Suffolk’s iconic village
Looking After The Hearts Of Suffolk ersey now is a small parish of around 350 people and is one of the most visited villages in Suffolk. This new and exciting book gives us a picture of Kersey life during a period of 900 years. Of particular interest to locals, visitors and family historians, it follows the peaks and troughs of Kersey’s trajectory through time, with true of fascinating and sometimes gruesome accounts events. Kersey’s prosperity peaked in the 15th century due to the new breed of successful clothiers who also landowners and challenged the aristocratic became status quo. Many of the village’s beautiful buildings originate from this period, preserved mainly due to the extreme poverty of later centuries.
There are stories of medieval misconduct, conflict and changing lords of the manor, religious exploration of the fate of Kersey Priory, as well as dissolved before the Reformation. Of great interest in the 17th century is Kersey’s role in Puritan migration to America and the mixed fortunes of those who arrived there. We hear sad tales of the lives of Kersey citizens who found themselves in the workhouse and of great hardship experienced in the 19th the population exploded, the cloth trade century as vanished and agriculture slumped. In the 20th century, we see the impact of two world wars on the village and its postwar renewal.

This is often a great concern to the elderly, as their dog may be their only friend and companion – Dogs Trust can give them peace of mind, knowing that their canine companions’ future is safe, should the worst happen to them.
