Perrywood Sudbury to build £8-10m garden centre Planning permission has been approved so Perrywood can move ahead with their £8-10m investment: an inspirational new Garden Centre in a landscaped environment at their existing site in Newton Road, Sudbury. Existing buildings will be repurposed with the potential to be leased out to other rural businesses and organisations. The application has received overwhelming support from the local community. This development will attract visitors to the area and create new jobs. Newton Parish Council, Chilton Parish Council and Great Cornard Parish Council have all given their unanimous support, and Sudbury Chambers of Commerce have offered their help and support with this new development.

The Mayor writes... AFTER
Once again, I have been elected to serve our wonderful town of Sudbury. I am delighted, honoured, humbled and will strive to represent our town to the best of my ability, and look forward to meeting as many of the charities, organisations and volunteers that make our town so special.
Since 2003 at Gymophobics we have
Many may be aware of my disappointment when the Access Point was moved from The Town Hall to the Library, however, I have been into the Sudbury Library frequently and am in touch with Babergh District Council Officers who have listened to my concerns, and we are moving forward to build bridges between the Town Council and District Council. There is still some confusion as to where the public should go with their many concerns. Suffolk County Council issues and Town Council issues are still dealt with at the Town Hall from 9.00 until 12.30 and 1.30 until 5.00 Monday to Friday. The Babergh District Access Point in the Library is available on a Monday or Thursday from 10.30am to 1pm and 2.30pm to 4.30pm for face-to-face assistance; however, assistance can be received during Library opening hours by a telephone, to connect customers to the Customer Services Team and use the special tablet that assists with uploading information and completing forms .The Library computers can also be used when the Babergh staff are unavailable to assist. Alternatively, an appointment can be booked for a Monday or Thursday with one of the Babergh Advisors by phoning 0300 1234 000. This could be useful for someone who is having to use public transport and is limited with time.

Yesterday I was given a tour of Gainsborough House, by Mark Bills. It was so exciting to see and hear about all the future plans and know it will be an enormous asset to our town, residents, and visitors from far and wide. My bathroom window looks out over the building, so I have observed the building from day one and have taken quite a few photographs. It was fascinating to watch the huge crane lowering in the staircases; I jokingly asked one of the builders if I could have a go at operating the crane as it was on my bucket list! You can imagine his response. I recently met with the dedicated volunteers from “Active Lives” who are maintaining the gardens in Bellevue Park. A water bowser has just been purchased, which will enable them to keep the gardens in tip-top condition. These volunteers are there every Thursday so, if you have time to spare do visit the park and thank them for their continued hard work During the past year I have still been involved in many meetings via Teams and Zoom, so council work has been changed from the normal format and I think everyone has gained skills in using a computer. I know I have learnt a considerable amount, making quite a few mistakes on my digital journey.

Visiting my local ladies only gym which has helped me to keep fit, plus walking along our beautiful meadows, I feel that people seem to smile and say hello far more during this pandemic. It has been the most disturbing, worrying, and sad fifteen months that I have ever experienced, I just hope and pray that we really are seeing and moving through this nightmare tunnel toward a much brighter, safer, and happier future.

Pat’s Dayz Owt Well, hello to you all, and I hope you have all come safely through the virus without problems. It really has been a hard almost 18 months which I hope is coming to an end, sooner rather than later. At this stage of the month of June, we are still not sure how things will go for July, but living on HOPE, that we will actually be able to get out on the coach for the trip to Felixstowe on 21ST JULY 2021. I am really looking forward to that and keeping my fingers crossed, - which makes typing very difficult, - so please excuse any mistakes. All we want then is a lovely sunny day, but not too hot!!! I also have some more news for you this time - I have been told that the Co-op Juniors are planning to do the Christmas show this year, and as all my tickets have been forwarded from the ones we could not use in 2020, so 5TH DECEMBER 2021 is a date in the future that, fingers crossed, (more problems to type!) will see us back at Snape Maltings for a lovely afternoon entertainment. Please contact me if you feel you would like to join us. Another date for you, this one to cheer us up when winter comes 2022, but is usually very popular. On Wednesday 9th February, we have the chance to see the Adult pantomime “Robin Hood and his Camp” at Brick Lane Music Hall following a 3 course lunch. I NOW HAVE TICKETS FOR THURSFORD CHRISTMAS 2021,so am taking bookings for both WEDNESDAY 21 AND SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER, so please contact me if you are interested, as soon as possible. Babergh District Council has this week named Cllr Adrian Osborne as its new Chairman. Cllr Osborne, who represents Sudbury South East, was elected the new Chairman at Babergh’s Annual Council meeting held on 25 May 2021. He succeeds Cllr Kathryn Grandon who served as Chair for two terms, due to the Covid pandemic. She was supported by Cllr Osborne as ViceChairman during her term in office. Cllr Kathryn Grandon was elected to serve as the new Vice-Chairman of the Council. As Chairman, Cllr Osborne has selected the Kernos Centre as his charity for the year. Based in Sudbury, the centre provides professional counselling and psychotherapy to residents who do not have access to NHS counselling and who do not have the finance to pay for private support. Since the charity’s inception there has been a steady increase in the number of residents, aged between 6 – 93 years old, using the service. Cllr Adrian Osborne said: “I am deeply honoured to serve the council and the residents of Babergh as Chairman of the council for the coming year. I have chosen Kernos as my charity for the fantastic work they do. Mental health support and counselling required to cope with difficult situations should not have to come with a price tag. I want our residents and beyond to know that help is available and there is always someone they can talk to. “I would also like to thank the outgoing Chairman, Cllr Kathryn Grandon who has served the council with a lot of charm and dignity during her two years in office, during a very difficult time. However, she rose to the challenge with style and grace.” Cllr Adrian Osborne was first elected to Babergh District Council in 2007. He has served three terms as Vice-Chairman as well as being on the Council’s Planning Committee, Overview & Scrutiny Committee and the Suffolk Joint Standards Board.

Sibarita - Spain’s Organic Larder “Sibarita” - Spain’s Organic Larder” is a brand-new business, importing and distributing a range of high-quality foods from Spain. It sources products from a small number of Spanish producers, all privately-owned family businesses, and aims to offer a greater choice of each supplier’s products than is generally available online in the UK. The products include cooked, preserved and dried pulses, vegetables, jams and marmalades, oils and vinegars, pickles, rice, spices and flavourings, pickles, and everything needed for paella other than meat and fish. Many of them make ideal gifts.
B
The products are all ambient and plant-based with a large selection of organic. The suppliers are committed to quality, retaining traditional artisan growing and production methods, but adopting modern technology where it can improve a product. A key feature of all the suppliers is the great care they take to use pulses, vegetables and fruits harvested at exactly the right time then processed quickly to ensure perfect taste and texture. Most of the products are from the more northerly regions of Spain from Cataluña and Navarra in the East to Castilla y León and Asturias in the West, regions which enjoy higher rainfall and less extreme temperatures. Of course, some products, such as olives, thrive in the heat of the South, After a long association with and love of Spain, and a lifetime in Logistics and Shipping, founder, Allan Binks was ready for something entirely different: “Having passed the reins of our family logistics businesses to our two sons, I was not ready to retire and wanted a new challenge with the support of younger members of our family. Having worked in Spain in the late 1960’s and having a house in Almeria for the last 30-odd years, something to do with Spanish food was ‘no contest’. Spanish is our default food!

“We are starting with a fantastic range of products from fantastic producers. But we are already planning the next stage of the development of “Sibarita” with the intention of introducing new and exciting products together with ambient meat and fish products. It is also clear to us that there are many new and innovative small producers in Spain, amongst the best, if not the best, in Europe.
“A key objective for Sibarita is to support these new businesses and to work together with them, with the support of our family-owned shipping Whatever the style, size or shape of your window, you’ll find a blind that is exactly and logistics businesses.”. right for you. Sibarita is a new business, based in Liston, a village in Braintree District close to Sudbury. We import and distribute a range of traditional Spanish foods from family-owned producers. Our high-quality products include cooked, preserved and dried pulses, vegetables, fruits, oils and vinegars, rice, spices and flavourings, pickles, jams and marmalades and everything you need for paella (except the meat and fish). Many of our products also make perfect gifts for food lovers and many are organic. The producers are all private, family-owned businesses totally committed to products of the highest quality, retaining traditional artisan farming and production traditions developed over generations but recognizing and adopting scientific and technological advances. Our policy is to buy directly from a small number of carefully selected suppliers. To give us time to establish our new business, except for certain flavourings, we have limited our range to ambient temperature products, all plant-based for a healthy diet.

Rotary Club of Sudbury Sudbury Rotary Club is delighted to congratulate Christine Boatwright, Clinical Director of the Kernos Centre in Sudbury, who was chosen to receive a national Rotary Champions Award at a presentation ceremony held on 30 June, via Zoom. Chris was nominated by Sudbury Rotary because of her dedicated work in developing counselling services at the Kernos Centre. Becoming a Rotary Champion recognises her vision in creating the Kernos Centre and her on-going commitment to its vital work in our community. When Chris set up the Kernos Centre in 2002, she wished to ensure that anyone needing counselling and support should be able to access this, without charge if they could not afford to contribute towards the cost, and for as long as was needed. The demand for these services has grown considerably over the years and Chris remains undaunted in her determination to offer support from the Kernos Centre, and works tirelessly to raise the funding needed each year to help people who are distressed and in need of life-supporting therapy from professional counsellors. Clients at the Centre have ranged from as young as five years old to as old as 95. Whatever the need, the Kernos Centre, under Chris’s leadership, will seek to meet it. Her commitment to the work of the Centre has never wavered and she gives unstintingly of her time, energy and enthusiasm to its activities. Despite having officially retired from a counselling role, Chris is still the ‘leading light’ as Clinical Director of the Kernos Centre. The Community Champions Award is justly deserved. At a Picnic held in a large garden alongside the River Stour on Monday, 28 June, the out-going Rotary President, Sandra Armitage, was pleased to hand-over the baton to Gloria Woods, who had already announced her plans for the year ahead. Whilst it will be necessary to continue to work safety within Covid rules, it is hoped to increase the impact of Sudbury Rotary on our local community, to expand our reach and make us more visible. Rotarians wish to engage with other groups and organisations to discover how Rotary could work with them. Gloria is keen to not decide to support a specific charity during her presidential year, but for Club members to decide on those who will benefit from each event organised. In the year ahead, it is planned that Rotary lunches will take place on the first and third Monday each month, with a presentation from a visiting speaker or a Club member. On the second Monday each month the usual Business Meeting will happen via Zoom, so that those who wish can access this from the comfort of their own homes. On the fourth Monday each month, members will have the opportunity to help with a Service Project or take part in social events. In July, a cream tea will be on offer on the fourth Monday, socially distanced and outdoors. The lunch-time meeting on 5 July will hear from Jane Gosling about The Soper Collection and on the 19 July, “Piracy on the High Seas” is the intriguing title of our speaker, Patrick Russi. As always, an invitation is extended to anyone who might wish to become involved in projects to benefit our community, and make new friends: come and meet us and find out more! To contact Sudbury Rotary Club please leave a message on the Club telephone (07787 470876).

Babergh Lodge No. 8122
For almost 60-years Babergh Lodge, No. 8122, which meets at The Hadleigh Masonic Hall in Sudbury, has served the local and wider community and Installation, Maintenance & Takeover 01473 824601 is one of sixty-eight Lodges in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Suffolk, part of the United Grand Lodge of England. Much has been written about Freemasonry, but what is true, is that through our Key Values - Integrity, email: info@abacusfas.co.uk Respect, Friendship and Charity - we strive to help those in need. www.abacusfas.co.uk In February 2021, The Provincial Grand Lodge of Suffolk confirmed their ongoing support for The Porch Project and a grant of £15,000 over 3 years has greatly assisted their aim to provide quality youth work so that the young people of Hadleigh, Great Cornard and the surrounding areas have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in life. The charity works with disadvantaged young people in the community to create opportunities to educate, inform and support, enabling them to develop wider opportunities, responsibilities and experiences and address the challenges of growing up. The project runs evening drop in sessions each week to provide a regular, safe and supervised place for young people to meet and socialise. It also offers small group learning programmes which aim to build emotional resilience and intelligence. In March 2021, The Provincial Grand Lodge of Suffolk provided a substantial donation to the charity Medical Detection Dogs which trains dogs to detect the odour of human disease with the aim of developing faster, more efficient, and less invasive diagnostics that lead to better patient outcomes. The charity is at the forefront of the research into the fight against cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Councils to provide financial lifeline for local projects Applications are now open for Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ Locality Awards funding – enabling communities to improve facilities, learn new skills and work towards becoming environmentally sustainable. A total across both councils of over £314,000 is available for Councillors to allocate to groups and organisations within their ward during the 2021/22 financial year. This can be used for a wide range of projects, but must meet the councils’ priorities for grant funding to help: • create strong, thriving and connected communities • support communities in their response to the climate emergency • promote resilient and healthy communities Ensuring that no resident is left feeling lonely or excluded remains of great importance for both councils, and Locality Awards grants can be used towards combating this in communities by installing hearing loops, providing Wi-Fi in rural areas, or hosting coffee mornings or lunch clubs. Groups can also apply for funding for sports and play equipment, exercise classes, walking festivals and other initiatives which support the councils’ aim for communities to lead active lives and manage their own health and wellbeing. Applications are also welcome for providing medical skills such as first aid to communities, as well as supporting them in other training including safeguarding, fire safety and anti-social behaviour prevention. It is hoped that this year’s Locality Awards funding will help to foster and maintain bonds between both councils and the districts’ voluntary and community sectors, with foodbanks, good neighbour schemes, Scouts and Guides, community transport groups and village halls amongst previous grant recipients. Those wishing to apply for funding can visit the councils’ website for further details or to download an application form.
