Save the heart of Sudbury The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) and the Friends of St Peter’s (FoSP) are working to save Sudbury’s historic St Peter’s church and give it a new lease of life by launching a crowdfunding appeal to raise £20,000 in 8 weeks.

The Grade I listed church has stood at the heart of community life in Sudbury, Suffolk since the 14th century and has been in the care of CCT since 1976. Sadly St Peter’s is deteriorating to a point where the long term use of the building is uncertain. The roof of the church is leaking and urgent, expensive repair work is needed to make the building watertight.

The public appeal now needs to raise a further £20,000 in the next 8 weeks to have a chance of unlocking £1.6 million of additional backing from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF). It is hoped a new crowd-funding campaign entitled ‘Save the heart of Sudbury’ will help get the appeal over the line.

Former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman (1906 – 1984) who was a great lover of churches, said of St Peter’s, when it was saved in 1976: “This is very great news that St Peter’s is saved. You have thereby kept Sudbury as an identity. Without the town would be half alive because in East Anglia church towers are the hearts of the landscape. Silent

Fairtrade Fortnight to be celebrated in Sudbury As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from February 24 to March 9, the local group set up on Sudbury Market on Saturday 29th February from 10am to 1pm giving out information and Fairtrade samples including chocolate and coffee from the East of England Co-Op which supports Fairtrade.

There was also “shopping lists� for children to take away so they can spot Fairtrade goods when they are shopping with family.

Nicki Dixon, the group’s new chairman, said: “Sudbury should be proud to be a Fairtrade Town, knowing we are doing our bit to help farmers, workers and growers all over the world get a fair price for their goods which we buy and enjoy.

Fairtrade goods are easy to ďŹ nd, just look for the Fairtrade logo on everything from Maltesers to bananas. We have a very well stocked stall in St Peter’s on the Thursdays when the Kettle and Fish cafĂŠ is open and it’s deďŹ nitely worth a visit.â€?

Nicki said the group would welcome new members as it aims to offer talks to schools, community groups and workplaces as well as attending local events to boost the town’s Fairtrade proďŹ le, working towards maintaining Fairtrade Town status. “We’d love to welcome new members to the group and will hopefully be out and about at various local events this year. We’ll also be holding a quiz night later in the year which will be a fun way of getting people together.â€?

It’s Spring! (Sort of…) and we are in our third month of our Spring Programme at The Quay. That’s how theatre works – in unendingly mysterious ways!

With renewed vigour, we approach a very busy month with all sorts of entertainment to entice and beguile, including Sudbury Dramatic Society’s March show. This year they are tackling the mighty W Somerset Maugham with their production of ‘For Services Rendered’ (an amateur production by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.). Set in late summer 1932 in Kent, the Ardsley family seem to be managing their lives very well following World War One and the Great Depression. In reality each of them is fighting for survival. With a stellar cast and crew, this should be a corker to start off the SDS year. Playing from 3rd – 7th March.

Jonathan Lambert Bespoke Jewellers & Goldsmiths Jeweller & Goldsmith, Jonathan Lambert, can trace his family history in fine jewellery back to Francis Lambert, a goldsmith in London from 1795.

Interestingly, the family business which he now runs in partnership with his wife Yasmin, is not very different to the original business in London over 200 years ago.

The Lavenham based business still designs and creates fine jewellery for discerning clients from all over the world and has a fully equipped on-site workshop for the repair and restoration of fine jewellery.

Yasmin, who has a 1st class honours degree in Fine Jewellery from London’s prestigious Central St Martins, still designs fine jewellery in a time-honoured fashion, using watercolours to illustrate designs before showing them to prospective clients. Once approved, Yasmin’s designs are then passed to Jonathan who oversees their creation in gold, platinum or silver in the workshop.

Jonathan, who is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, a past Chairman of the National Association of Goldsmiths and an Honorary Life Member of the National Association of Jewellers, can also advise clients on the sympathetic restoration of antique jewellery and the adjustment, repair and remodelling of their treasured pieces.

The couple, who also had a shop in Sudbury for 16 years until 2018, have built an excellent reputation for designing and creating fine jewellery, both in Suffolk and further afield. They have recently returned from a buying trip to Europe where they met with diamond and gem dealers from around the world to source loose stones for both stock pieces and commissions.

Home Library Service volunteers deliver books, audiobooks and large print titles so people don’t miss out on the pleasure of reading and someone to talk to.

The service is free and operates across Suffolk. All the volunteers are reference and DBS checked. The Home Library Service is also available to care and residential homes and if you’re at home recovering from an operation or illness.

People can borrow several items at a time and it’s not just the books which people beneďŹ t from. Some of the people the service visits may not see many people during the week, so it provides much needed social interaction with volunteers happy to stay for a chat.

For however short a time, let’s enjoy the blue sky and the welcome warmth in the stable yard. My photos this month show boys from Chalk Hill School in Sudbury enjoying their Thursday morning at the Centre. You’ll see they like chatting to the horses’ heads. Funnily enough none of the lads is keen to pick hooves, groom, or sweep up poos whilst visiting us! Part of their therapy is to learn responsibility, gentleness around the ponies, good manners and listening skills. No swearing allowed, always thank the helpers and your own horse after a ride and of course if you don’t listen to instructions you can come a big cropper. Their Coach and our chairman, Jan, stands no nonsense and she and her team thoroughly enjoy helping these boys to a better attitude and building confidence in their own abilities. When all six boys turn up it’s a great ride to watch. I like seeing six of our live herd in the arena together, with competent riders aboard, no side walkers, and Jan putting them through their paces. One photo shows the whole ride setting out to enjoy a road hack, something our able bodied riders enjoy enormously. Shelley is such a great place to spend time in; even though I never get out of my ‘room’ I hear all about it and can guess our lads enjoy being out of the arena for a change. So do their mounts!

Out on the roads we have to have our volunteers dressed in high viz jackets, obviously. At this time of year that’s no problem, but in high summer something about the jackets attracts black flies, and they get covered in the little perrishers. So Spring weather is just perfect for us all. A fundraising event was held on Wednesday 5th February 2020 at the Café Masala, Hall Street, Long Melford, Sudbury, Suffolk.CO10 9HZ. The total monies raised was £257.00 This event was organized by Abdul Shahid (Shah) proprietor of the CAFÉ` MASALA and Ray Cook poppy appeal organiser for Long Melford and District.

This lunch was to held to recognize the British Commonwealth and all allied forces of religion, colour and creed who lost members of their armed forces in both world wars and other conflicts since.

This was Shah’s idea to remember all nationalities that lost citizens in conflict.

This was the first one of this type of event that we have held and we are hoping to hold more events like this in the future.

We would like to thank every one who supported this event, shops and businesses that gave raffle prizes.

Sudbury War Hero honoured in New Book Author and naval historian Steve Dunn’s new book, Baltic in the Baltic, turns the spotlight on those who lost their lives at sea while protecting the fragile independence of Estonia and Latvia at the end of WW1.

At the time, neither the British Government nor the public had any real appetite for the campaign but Secretary of State for War Winston Churchill was determined to stop Bolshevik Russia retaking the new Baltic countries.

And so the Royal Navy despatched a sizeable operation to the Baltic, including 19-year-old Able Seaman John Edward Pettitt. Pettitt, who attended Sudbury Grammar School, had served aboard several ships before he joined the British destroyer-minelayer, HMS Vittoria, which was involved in the brutal conflict.

So instead of celebrating the Allied victory with his parents Horace and Emily at their home in Priory Road, Sudbury, he found himself fighting communist sea forces and delivering vital support to independent fighters.

In August 1919 HMS Vittoria was on patrol off Seskar Island in the Gulf of Finland, when it was torpedoed by a Bolshevik submarine. The order was given to abandon ship and although many of the men were rescued, eight died, including Pettitt. They are remembered on Chatham Naval Memorial.

“This was a story I wanted to tell not just because few people know about it but because it reminds us all how we need to stand up for democracy,” said Steve.

“Thanks to men like Pettitt these fledgling democracies were protected.”

Not surprisingly, Battle in the Baltic, has already come to the attention of the Latvian Embassy. Steve has been invited to address Her Excellency Ms Baiba Braže and her VIP guests as part of the official launch in March.

“It’s a real honour for me to have been asked to give a talk at the embassy and have the opportunity to discuss my book. I hope I have done justice to what is such as critical time in Latvia’s history.”

Battle in the Baltic is Steve’s eighth book. Two of his previous publications were shortlisted for the prestigious Mountbatten Maritime Award, which is presented annually to an author who has made a significant contribution to the UK’s maritime history.

I don’t know who Ciara and Dennis are but they made a dreadful mess in the garden. Mum was nearly blown over when she went out to check the kennels and stables. The dramatic storms may be a distant memory now but our volunteers are still repairing the damage.

It’s been a rough year so far. Apart from battling the elements, we lost dear old Peg, one of our Kune Kune pigs. She and her lifelong pal, Bob, arrived a few years ago after their owner died. Sadly Peg became ill recently and on the morning of her demise, Bob was laying by her side with his head laid across her. As you may imagine, a few tears were shed that day.

I also suffered a much smaller loss when the Vet removed three of my teeth. It can’t be my fault, although every time Mum tried to clean them I bit her just to let her know they were still there. Perhaps I should have let her clean them.

We have lots of bargains ready for our £1 Sale on 14th March at Newton Green Village Hall, CO10 0QS. Don’t miss it, if only for the delicious homemade cakes! Which reminds me, it’s nearly dinner time! It’s so cold, even the cats are staying in and taking over our dog beds. Hello Everyone, Is it me or has the weather been particularly odd the last couple of months? Firstly cold, the teeming with rain then almost spring sunshine. Mind you we’ve been very lucky in the east compared to the western part of the country!

On the Mayoral point of view things have begun to get busier after the Christmas lull. One of the first events I attended was the AGM for the Kernos Centre. This is a charity based in Friars St that provides counselling for many types of mental conditions such as depression, stress, domestic abuse. The team is led by Chris Boatwright and they do great work completely funded by voluntary donations.

On the 22nd January I presented awards at the British Legion Poppy Appeals Dinner. There were many awards celebrating long service or number of poppies sold. The main award though was to Stuart Hume who has been a driving force behind poppy appeals in Sudbury for 30 years. When he started the average amount raised was £4-5,000 but in recent years this has in some years risen to nearly £60,000. Over the years he has overseen the raising of £680,000. In the filled room the respect and affection for Stuart was clear.

The next day Jacqui Howells, the Town Clerk, and I had the privilege of hosting the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Lady Clare of Euston, on a visit to Sudbury. We introduced her to a number of Sudbury’s store owners and market traders with whom she had a detailed talk about Sudbury affairs.

Later she met with Mark Bills of Gainsborough House for an update on the £5M renovation that’s just started there. Lady Clare is a very warm character and showed great interested in events in Sudbury. We were pleased to be her hosts!

Later in the month I took a trip outside Sudbury to Thetford. This was to take part in the Peace Bell Award ceremony which recognised Thetford’s work in promoting remembrance events such as the D-day landings, in the town. This is a national award and many Mayor’s from around Suffolk attended the event. Watch out for details of Sudbury’s events to celebrate the end of the war in Europe which take place on the weekend of 9th May. A couple of events that I attended were to do with the development of major sites within Sudbury which will affect everyone who lives here.

Firstly, Babergh put on an engagement event in St Peters to present ideas for the development of Belle Vue Park and House, reorganisation of bus routes and the possible pedestrianisation of the marketplace. These ideas are not set in stone but give possible directions.

The Belle Vue was concerned how a new hotel may look and how it would affect the park and the house. The Town Council certainly believes a new hotel located in Sudbury would provide a big economic boost to the town.

The exhibition certainly gave food for thought and it was nice to see there were three options presented for the use of Belle Vue House. I believe there will be plenty of opportunities for people to give their views on the proposals shown.

The second group I met with was to get an update on the proposed developments with St Peters. The Church Commission Trust (who own St Peters) and Friends of St Peters are working together for a Lottery bid (over £1M) to make repairs to the building fabric and develop a vibrate community space. It all looked very promising.

Just a note on a very pleasant event Hilary and I attended at West Suffolk College. This was to see an end of term performance of Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward given by the students. Before the performance we were treated to a meal prepared by the catering students at the college – excellent!

The Long Melford Historical & Archaeological Society has recently received a cheque for £400 from the East of England Co-op. The stores support communities by running a green token scheme across their food stores, giving local good causes a chance to collect a share of a £1000 donation every three months.

The Historical & Archaeological Society are very grateful to all those who chose the Society for their green tokens and this generous donation will be used to purchase equipment to preserve, catalogue and store their document archive, which will be undertaken by a new research group.

On the Council front we received a very interesting presentation from Babergh District Council on how they tackle homelessness in the area. They reported 33 homeless people in the district, and they show the various methods for trying to help these people – a very important question.

Finally, I have to report that Sudbury’s Town Clerk, Jacqui Howells, has decided to stand down after 5 years in post. Jacqui took over in very difficult circumstances and has done a great job in steadying the ship and moving the Council on. She is starting a new business with her husband and we wish her good luck with that. The process to recruit a new Clerk has already begun.

Free hearing checks in Sudbury to mark World Hearing Day

In 2019, several local primary schools benefited from Rotary grants to support a wide variety of environmental activities within their schools as well as visits to wildlife habitats, including Sudbury Common Lands.

One local hearing company is raising awareness about the importance of hearing health by supporting World Hearing Day (3rd March 2020), a global initiative run by the World Health Organisation.

St Gregory Church of England Primary was one of the school’s which was given Rotary funding. Their Nursery (and Eco-Committee)Teacher, Clare Gray, reported on the exciting activities which had been made possible for children during May and June last year.

The children enjoyed an ‘Earth Afternoon’ with each class focusing on a different eco theme - from yoga (well-being) to making recycled paper and planting a bee-friendly garden.

They invested in netting for the strawberries and the children really enjoyed the fruits of their labours, with beans, peas, carrots and tomatoes all growing and ripening day by day.

This year’s World Hearing Day theme is ‘Hearing for life: don’t let hearing loss limit you’ and will highlight that timely and effective interventions can ensure that people with hearing loss are able to achieve their full potential in life.

Hearing loss is a global challenge; 466 million people worldwide live with hearing loss and this number continues to grow.1 In the UK, 11 million people are living with hearing loss, approximately one in six of the population.²

Children in the Early Years classes made more progress than previously in ‘Understanding the World’ - an area of the curriculum which teaches children about the natural world and our interactions with it. Much of this is attributable to our growing garden and the new addition of the Bee Friendly Garden flower bed round the side of nursery. There are plans to revive a large herb wheel in the main school to accommodate sensory plants and herbs in 2020.

The Hearing Care Centre, which is East Anglia’s largest hearing care company, is offering free hearing checks at all 26 of its audiology clinics, including locally at Sudbury Community Health Centre, in a bid to encourage local people to make their hearing health a priority.

Rotary funding directly supported the children’s learning and understanding of environmental issues and it’s been good for them to meet, greet and work with other people in the community. They were so excited about eating the strawberries!

Karen Finch, Managing Director and lead audiologist of The Hearing Care Centre said, “ Our team wish to raise awareness and spark discussion within the local area. At all stages of our lives, hearing is a vital element for communication, socialising, learning and working. My team are focused on providing innovations and initiatives along with the best possible care to support people living with hearing loss to live their life to the fullest.

“Hearing loss is often neglected for years and can affect every aspect of personal, social and professional life. If left untreated, hearing loss can increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, but early interventions can ensure the impact of hearing loss remains minimal, and people can live a full unlimited life.”

The School welcomed this additional funding for green projects, especially the bee-friendly garden near the insect hotel, as well as being able to run more Eco-Committee Earth Day events. There is also a plan for a quiet area planting project, where individual teachers will run their own eco-activities on the day.

This initiative has helped children to learn more about environmental issues in the world around them and the School has been delighted to have the help of Sudbury Rotary members with these projects.

Moving in 2020?

Don’t pay twice for conveyancing When you move home, selling and buying property, you will need to employ the services of a conveyancing solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the transaction, for which there is a legal fee.

Paying twice when transactions fall-through What many home movers don’t realise is that if your transaction falls-through, which happens for many reasons and with increasing frequency, you will still be charged by your conveyancing solicitor for the legal work undertaken up to the point the transaction fell-through.

This means, you pay legal fees to your conveyancing solicitor for the transaction that fell-through and then have to pay them again for the legal work on the next transaction, which will hopefully be a successful one that goes through to ‘completion’. You essentially pay for your conveyancing twice.

How common is it for property transactions to fall-through?

Rightmove reports that nearly 30% of property transactions fell-through in 2018*, which is significantly more common than most people realise.

Some commentators also believe the current economic uncertainty and slow property market may cause this percentage to increase as buyers and sellers become more cautious and risk-averse, making them more likely to pull-out of a deal.

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Concert – Sunday 29th March Sunday classical!

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that their next concert will be on Sunday 29th March at 6 pm when we will be performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Thomas Isaac as soloist and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 4. This is the third time that Thomas Isaac will have performed with the orchestra, his last visit to Sudbury was in November 2017 when he riveted the audience with his wonderful performance of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto. Thomas is now co-principal cellist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra having finished his post graduate studies with the Royal Academy of Music. We are confident his position in Bournemouth is a stepping stone for him in his orchestral career before joining one of the major world class orchestras.

Elgar’s cello concerto is one of THE cello concertos, in fact with the Dvorak concerto it is probably the most performed of all cello concertos. Elgar started composing it in 1918 and finished it in 1919. It is a lament for a lost world, haunted by autumn sadness. Beloved by audiences the world over for its sweeping and noble passages this will be a magical evening.

Dvorak’s Symphony No. 4 was composed in 1874 and shows the influences of both Wagner and Brahms. It is also shows off his own wonderful mastery of composition and you can hear the unique musical characteristics for which he later became so famous. This symphony is not often played so this is a wonderful opportunity to hear it performed live.

This will be a really wonderful evening’s music, do come and enjoy.

I am struggling to keep up – as last year!

We had a fantastic day out, with a full coach this week, for the adult pantomime. The sun was shining, so a lovely coach ride, followed by a tasty 3 course lunch, which was followed by the adult pantomime, when we just did not stop laughing. A truly perfect day out ending with the lovely coach return ride. Next year’s already booked for Wednesday 10th February, for “Robin Hood and his camp followers” March sees us off to Southport for a 5 day holiday, which then already takes us into April.

Wed 24 April, we go to Cadbury World, - sorry already fully booked, as is the May trip to see the seals in a boat from Harwich.

Wed 17 June, a few seats left for the ride to Wroxham for lunch stop, and then on for the Paddle Boat Mississippi from Wroxham.

Wed 15 July is for a day in Eastbourne.

Further trips for the remainder of the year ready for booking. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk

Since being elected in 2015, I have been inundated by constituents exacerbated by the lack of rail ticketing options for part-time commuters. As such, in March 2016, I held my first adjournment debate on the subject of ‘Flexible ticketing’ where I was able to share publicly some of this correspondence.

I read an email from Deborah of Sudbury who argued: “Flexible season tickets would encourage more people to work from home some days, which would reduce overcrowding on the trains, and would benefit South Suffolk, as more people would have time to spend their London wages locally. It is very oldfashioned to think that workers go to their office every day and we should not be penalised for flexible working”.

I also read out a piece from a constituent called Russell, from Nayland, who had done the maths: “It is becoming increasingly common for people to work from home, yet we are still forced to pay the season tickets for the entire week, month or year. For me, that means paying for 365 days of travel, when in fact I only travel on 208 of these… On the basis of me paying £5,520 a year (i.e. £15.12 a day), this means I am really overpaying for 173 days a year – i.e. a full £2615.76”.

Since the debate I have continued to beat the drum in Parliament, so I was delighted when the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, announced on New Year’s Day that his department would be trialling part-time season tickets. Better still, at his recent HS2 ‘Rail Infrastructure’ statement I asked the Prime Minister to go further and roll this trial out nationwide, and he replied that this was the Government’s “intention”.

Of course, there may be a national financial cost of extending flexible ticketing, but I am convinced that this change would create new opportunities for local people to return to employment. By removing a financial disincentive to parttime commute to London or Chelmsford, where there can be a wider range of opportunity and higher wages, flexible ticketing could encourage residents to take advantage of opportunities they may otherwise have discounted.

SbN Ladies Captain, Jane Golding, has chosen The Alzheimer’s Society as her nominated charity for 2020 The first of two charity talks took place on Thursday 13th February. A Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive competition was run by Deb Howlett in the simulator just before the talk, taken from a Abu Dhabi golf course, which proved to be popular with all, including one of our eldest ladies Lilian Osborne taking part, she had never used one of these before, so it was quite an experience – certainly looking like warmer & drier weather than we have currently here! Well done to winners Nearest the Pin Susan Swan and Karen Lewis and Longest Drive Corinne Jackson.

Musarra Gray from the Alzheimer’s Society gave a very interesting and informative presentation which made for good talking points afterwards and focussed us all for raising funds for this worthy charity during the year.

I run a small business. It’s been a very difficult six months for us, we lost a contract with one of our major clients and I just haven’t been able to replace it with new business. Now I’ve just received a huge energy bill. It feels like the last straw and I’m really stressed.

I’m sorry to hear about your problems. The first thing to do is to call the Citizens Advice consumer service on 0808 223 1133. They can often help to resolve problems with energy suppliers.

It’s particularly important to do this quickly if you’re on a business contract and you’ve been told you’re going to be disconnected. If this happens an extra fee can be added to your bill, and then there’ll be another charge for being reconnected.

If you think the bill is wrong, get in touch with your energy company. If you are a microbusiness you can only be charged for gas or electricity you’ve used in the last 12 months - they can’t send you a new bill dating back longer than a year.

If the bill is correct, but you just can’t afford it, your energy supplier might agree to a payment plan. Work out a realistic budget so you know you’ll be able to afford the payments. Here at Citizens Advice we can help sole traders and individuals, but for other businesses there’s the Business Debtline on 0800 197 6026.

Moving forward, If your bills are being estimated you might be paying more than you need to. Set up a reminder on your phone to send monthly meter readings to your supplier or see if you can get a smart meter installed.

You may also find switching energy companies will save you money.

You could also try energy efficiency measures such as switching off computers and other equipment overnight, using energy efficient light bulbs or making sure your premises are insulated.

JustTalk2019 & JustTalk Productions: Making a difference through film JustTalk Productions debut new film ‘Dying to be Famous’ is making waves through the therapeutic community, with articles already being published by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

JustTalk Productions was set up by Glenda D. Roberts, a pioneer of modern counselling and psychotherapy in Sudbury. Glenda is the director of Sudbury’s own ExploringU Counselling service and JustTalk 2019, counselling organisations Glenda established to reach out to the local community to offer therapeutic support. Glenda and her team’s vision are to make counselling accessible to everyone and that’s exactly what they are trying to do. JustTalk2019 was established as an affordable counselling service to make counselling available from just £5, meaning, more people in the community can access support. The service also has a ‘bridge fund’ which offers free counselling to those who cannot afford it. Profits raised from JustTalk Productions’ film ‘Dying to be Famous’ will go straight into the bridge fund meaning even more people can be helped. Not only is this film raising awareness of such important issues, it is also meaning more people in Sudbury can access counselling. “This film has really helped us raise money for our bridge fund” says Tanya, a member of JustTalk2019’s team. “We would really love to keep this fund alive so we can help more people. We would love to collaborate more with local businesses to support our cause and spread the word of our work around mental health” ‘Dying to be Famous’ is a short film that highlights the dangers around social media and how online bullying and trolling can really hurt. The film stars the character Ruby who is a social media influencer struggling with harmful comments by trolls, along with other difficulties in her life. Ruby is finding it hard to cope and doesn’t see a way out. It not only raises awareness of the dangers young people are facing in this new social media age, it also shows that help is out there and how counselling can make a difference to people’s lives. The film shows the main character Ruby calling JustTalk2019’s counselling service and shows how much a difference therapeutic help can have. The production demonstrates superb cinematic talent making it incredibly professional as well as informative.

Sudbury’s Quay theatre has had multiple showing of ‘Dying to be Famous’ and has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the local community.

Each showing offered a Q&A at the end of the film giving the community members the chance to ask questions to the filmmaker, qualified counsellors, and the BACP’s Children, Young People and Families Lead, Jo Holmes said “The BACP were delighted to be asked to the showing of this evocative and thought provoking short film which in hindsight feels so terribly appropriate following the recent news of a suicide of a woman so very much in the public eye. The audience gave a collective gasp when the lead character chose not to go ahead with plans to end her life, demonstrating the importance of reaching out and talking to someone, in this case, a local counselling service. The film created much interesting audience discussion and debate, the consensus being, ‘’it’s good to talk’’ particularly about difficult issues such as suicide. The message from BACP, alongside leading mental health charities is to challenge the stigma often associated with asking for help and to reach out”. The viewing also raised the attention of the new professional body Ayanay Psychological Accreditation (APA) who actively took part in the discussion.

Siobhain Crosby MD APA Ayanay Psychological Accreditation said..“Dying to be famous, opens youngsters’ eyes to the danger of the damage caused by bullying etc on social media and is a phenomenal short film reflecting the need for education and support available. APA endorse the efforts by all the team involved and it’s an incredible achievement, and highly recommend viewing” Local school ‘The Ryes College’ has also got involved by holding viewings for their students. Glenda and her team held a Q&A at the school and carried an open discussion around social media, trolling and mental health issues.

Students and staff offered praise for the film and received positive feedback from the discussion.

This feedback has prompted conversations between The Rhyes College and JustTalk2019 around a future partnership and the possibility of future films including a collaboration with DT Films. This exciting prospect could mean more money is raised for JustTalk2019’s bridge fund and more awareness being given to the issues around mental health and wellbeing, something that is becoming increasingly important in this modern age.
