As the festive season draws closer, most of us will be looking forward to reuniting with family and friends. For someone with hearing loss, the Christmas period can A member of Civic Voice cause a lot of anxiety for fear of embarrassment and stress of trying to communicate with their loved ones. One in six people across the UK experience some form of reduced hearing, but nowhere near that amount act to improve their hearing. Many believe that they are being a martyr by ‘getting on’ with hearing loss, when actually it can drive a wedge between yourself and those around you. The tendency of those with significant hearing loss is to avoid communication and social gatherings altogether to save their own embarrassment. If you prioritise your hearing, you will can nurture these special relationships that you treasure. Hearing aids can make such a difference to someone’s quality of life, especially at this time of year. Modern hearing aids are much smaller and more discreet than they ever used to be and packed full of amazing features that will help during the festive period. These features can include directional microphones, which work to reduce the amount of noise allowed to enter your hearing aids. In noisy environments, like at a Christmas party or meal, the system will work to pick up the sounds you need to hear. If the noise is located behind you, your directional microphones will adapt to pick up sound from in front of you and dampen noise from behind you. Also most hearing aids now have Bluetooth connectivity, meaning not only can you adjust your hearing aids via a remote control or even your smartphone, but they can also connect to the television and play the audio from your favourite Christmas film directly into your ears so you can watch along with your family and hear every word. Don’t let another Christmas go by just ‘getting on’ with hearing loss, take this opportunity to look after your hearing health. Booking a hearing assessment is such a simple action, but it can have a huge wealth of benefits. The Hearing Care Centre holds regular clinics in Hadleigh and Sudbury. To find out how their expert audiologists can give you the gift of good hearing, visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk or call 01473 230330 for more information. Your Chairwoman discusses the implications of a new-look Sudbury and indeed, Sudbury Society itself. What will this mean for Sudburians, members and non-members? Read her thoughts on page 3 .

Pat’s Dayz Owt We have just returned from a lovely 5 day Warner’s Holiday in Hayling Island, plenty of food, lovely entertainment and dry weather when we were outside. Now looking forward to our Christmas shows at Thursford this month and Snape Maltings in December, and then to Christmas itself. Where has this year gone? 2020 sees us out for a short ride just to Ipswich for a carvery lunch and home again before it gets dark, just to blow the cobwebs away and get out of the house!! Still vacancies on this one. February we have already got a full coach for the adult Pantomime in Brick Lane Music Hall. March – sorry - again all seats taken for 5 day holiday to Southport. Our list for 2020 is now available in the Tourist Information office in the library in Sudbury, with lots of new venues to visit, including a very new thing in August. An outdoor show with a cast of 1,000 local people, which is just “out of this world and has to be seen to be believed, bringing the history of England to life. Do not let that put you off – as a child I absolutely hated history, I couldn’t see the point of it at all, but I thoroughly enjoyed EVERY SECOND of this show. It is AWESOME, and as well as all the people acting in it (they have 3,000 costumes) and lots of animals taking part. In addition there are fireworks, including some actually coming out of a stream!!! Also included in this 4 day holiday (Fri – Mon) – show on the Saturday. Other excursions included are visiting Beamish, and another day at Durham, and staying at 4 star Jurys Hotel. I do need your help though, as without a certain number of passengers it cannot run, - and I am desperate to see that show AGAIN!! I DO SO HOPE YOU WILL COME TOO. The main feature of our June calendar was the annual Prom Concert held on Saturday 16th June at St Peter’s; this year’s was probably one of the most enjoyable ever with a record attendance and featured the welcome return of the popular Long Melford Silver Band with its new conductor, Nigel Partridge, taking the stage for us for the first time and really “working the audience” in the traditional items towards the end of every Prom Concert. This year’s was rather special because the Silver Band paid tribute to the RAF by playing Walford Davies’ RAF March and to the soldiers of the 1914-18 war. Emphasising the wide range of music which we enjoyed, other items included Karl Jenkins’ Benedictus, the Best of Bond and a miscellany from West Side Story. Taking up the West Side story cue, Sudbury’s young soprano Evie Press enthralled the audience with her rendition of “I feel pretty” and perhaps even more so Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro, accompanied on the organ by Rotarian Roger Green. Not surprisingly the audience called for encores from both Evie and the Silver Band and we ended the night singing “Bring me sunshine”. What an event! – I did wonder at one point whether there might also be dancing in the This lovely picture was taken in Sudbury by talented local wildlife aisles. Maybe next year photographer Matt Byham.because the Silver Band is already booked for next year’s concert on 15th June 2019. Mark this date in your diaries now!

Spring is upon us, and the sweet sounds of nature are music to our ears! Yet for those with hearing loss, some of these sounds go completely unheard. One local business is encouraging anyone experiencing hearing difficulties to ‘spring into action’ by attending a special event in Hadleigh. Just as our eyes slowly deteriorate as we age, making it difficult to read small print, our ears can gradually lose their ability to hear sound. It may surprise you to know that sounds as common as birds singing, pages turning and the crunch of gravel underfoot are sounds that those with hearing loss completely miss out on. Hearing loss can lead to isolation and frustration due to finding it difficult to follow conversations, over exhaustion after listening in challenging environments, and a greater risk of developing cognitive issues including dementia. Overall this leads to a reduced quality and experience of life. Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Concert Sunday 24th November Sunday classical!
Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that their next concert will be on Sunday 24th November at 6 pm when we will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with Philippa Barton as soloist and Brahms Serenade No. 1. Philippa is a very well known local violinist and teacher who trained at the Royal Academy of Music, freelanced with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and is now leader of a number of regional orchestras. Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto is one of THE violin concertos but like much of Tchaikovsky’s music it had a bad start in life. Critics and violinists all condemned the piece. But after a few years all this changed and now the concerto is one of his most popular works with its beautiful lyrical themes interrupted by some really virtuoso passages for the violin.
The Black Lion, named ‘The Best Place to Stay 2019’ in the East by The Sunday Times
Brahms Serenade No. 1 is not often played as much as it should be. It does not help that no one is quite sure what a serenade is. In this case it is for full orchestra, lasts as long as the average symphony and has six movements. Each movement is very individual, some are a jolly and bucolic, some quite martial and triumphant, some gloriously slow and measured, and it all ends in a galloping ride of a rondo. This is Brahms at the start of his career showing just what he was capable of and what he would become - a master of the orchestral world.
Rhys Williams, The Manager at the Black Lion told Sudbury & Long Melford Community News: “We are so thrilled to have won this award – it means a huge amount to the team to be recognised for all their hard work. We want all our guests from our regular locals, to those visiting from further afield to enjoy their stay with us. Our newly launched `Sharing Sunday Lunches’ have been incredibly popular locally and we have a new Game Dinner just started as well – so we will continue to try new exciting ideas at The Black Lion”
This is a really rewarding and rich programme for a November evening. Enjoy Concert details: Sunday 24 November 2019 at 6.00pm St Peter’s Church, Market Hill, Sudbury CO10 1TL Conductor: Matthew Andrews – www.matthewandrews.net Leader: Steve Calder Soloist: Phillipa Barton Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Brahms Serenade No. 1 Tickets: Adult £12, Child £2 Available from 1st November from Compact Music, North Street, Sudbury and Sudbury Tourist Information (library). Philip Turner, founder and managing director of Chestnut – owner of Black Lion added: “The Black Lion is at the geographical heart of Chestnut’s ambition to celebrate all that is great about East Anglia. I am so happy for our team, many of whom have grown up within cycling distance of the property. They are so proud of the building’s heritage, striving to produce a quality product that can be offered without formality to our local community and guests from afar.” www.blacklionlongmelford.com

Field to Fork at Long Melford farmers market Passion for Pigs – Maypole Pork Many people feel blessed to be living in Suffolk with the abundance of good local food. That feeling could only be hugely enhanced by a visit to Ellie Squirrel at Maypole Pork in Bradfield St George. Ellie is the 4th generation of the family working on the farm set up by her great grandfather over 100 years ago. A traditional arable farm producing sugar beet, wheat, rape and barley, over 200 acres is the setting for her rare pig farm. But of course it wasn’t planned! Ellie attended Harper Adams University and had studied Countryside Management but that hadn’t sparked the same passion as her love for pigs - `maybe it started when I had a couple of pigs as pets growing up on the farm’ Ellie laughs. Ellie had learnt about commercial production of pork production through her university studies but realised that she would always have to have a real emotional involvement with the pigs to make it work for her. So in 2017 aged just 25, Ellie purchased 2 rare pigs from a lady in Sudbury in 2017 and her passion and business grew from there. Two years later and now with 10 breeding sows, Ellie can be rearing up to 60 pigs at any one time and she wants to keep developing. Goats were introduced 18 months ago as Ellie sees this meat growing in popularity so much so that she now has 9 breeding females – `they’re also great to help graze parts of the farm!’ What has started as a passion has developed through hard work into a selfsufficient business. At her stall at Long Melford Farmers Market, Maypole Pork is now attracting a growing number of regular customers `The Farmers Market at Long Melford is great to put me in front of local customers and when they learn about my products they can quickly become a regular buyer!’ You can find Maypole Farm every month at Long Melford Farmers Market, Village Hall, Long Melford from 9.30am until 1pm. Upcoming dates before Christmas are November 9th and December 7th (Note the December market is one week earlier than usual)

My gas and electricity deal has come to an end and the energy company has offered me a new contract. However, they’re insisting I get a smart meter fitted. I’ve heard these don’t really work and I can’t see the benefit. Am I better off looking for a different supplier, or will the new company also force me to have a smart meter? It’s always worth shopping around. Citizens Advice has a tool on its website www.citizensadvice.org.uk which can help. Our energy star rating looks at how well suppliers perform on a range of measures, including customer service, rather than just price. As regards the smart meter, you certainly don’t have to accept one. A supplier can’t tell you that you must have one installed. However, it might mean you’re not eligible for all the deals on offer. In future the cheaper tariffs offered by suppliers might only be available to customers with smart meters. If you do decide to go ahead, your supplier should explain the process beforehand, show you how it works and give you a number to call if anything goes wrong. There are benefits to smart meters, they send daily meter readings to your supplier, meaning they can bill you accurately for the energy you’ve used. They won’t automatically save you money, but you can use the digital ‘in-home’ display to keep track of how much energy you’re using and then try to reduce it. The Citizens Advice consumer helpline (03454 04 05 06) can give advice on smart meter issues. If you require help or information contact Sudbury & District Citizens Advice, Keyse House, Acton Lane, Sudbury, CO10 1QN. Telephone 01787 321400 or 0300 330 1151, email advice@sudburycab.org.uk or call in to the drop-in advice sessions Mon to Thurs between 10am and 1pm. Local hearing company wins Customer Commitment Award One local hearing company is celebrating as they have been commended for their commitment to customer service at a regional round of countrywide business awards. The Hearing Care Centre, which has 26 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk, won the Customer Commitment Award in the regional round of the 2019 British Chambers of Commerce business awards. Now in their 16th year, the awards recognise the key role that local businesses play in driving the UK economy. The Hearing Care Centre will now go forward to represent the East of England in the national finals, which take place in London in November. Upon receiving the news, Managing Director Karen Finch expressed ““I was so thrilled to learn of our success in this award. Customer service is something my entire team are truly passionate about and to have this recognised in this way is extra special. “I am also very proud to represent Suffolk on a national scale - fingers crossed for the national Chamber Awards in November!”
The Phoenix Collective At the end of Sept a giant teapot arrived at Sudbury library and a display of artwork adorned some of the walls. The artists behind the event were none other than The Phoenix Collective, an inclusive performance and creative arts group based in the heart of Sudbury at The Quay Theatre. Members of the collective had spent the summer months exploring ways to feel positive and maintain good mental health. The POSITIVI- TEA installation grew out of these discussions and workshops. We focused on positive affirmations and out of re- purposed canvases, artists used newspaper print as a backdrop to display these colourful messages. Artistic inspiration was present in the story of Alice in Wonderland hence the giant teapot! In the book Alice finds herself invited to a tea party with a range of characters and is made to feel very welcome, despite the unusual circumstances that led her there. Members of the group agreed that connecting with friends, family and members of the community, over a cuppa can help us to feel good and that it is important to take the time out of our busy lives to stop, chat and listen. Massive thanks must go to library manager Gareth Lewry and his fantastic team who facilitated the event and provided support on our opening evening. We hope this is the first of many partnership opportunities. The Phoenix Collective meet every Friday at the Jetty (Next to the Quay) from 4.30-6.30pm term time. We are currently working on our winter production, “Wonderland- Interrupted” which will be performed on Friday 29th Nov at 7pm at The Jetty- All are welcome to attend. Rachel Bennett - Director

Rotary Club of Sudbury
For the past six years Sudbury Rotary has sponsored a local young person to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) course at Graffham Water. In September this year the Club’s student was Adam Perrens, who came along to our lunchtime meeting at the Mill Hotel on Monday, 14 October to report on his experiences during the week-long course. Numerous challenges are set for the young people attending the course, including an orienteering night hike, experiences of sailing, canoeing and paddle-boarding, being involved in many outdoor activities and other challenges, learning how to make presentations and taking part in team-building exercises. Adam said “The RYLA course really boosted my confidence, gave me the opportunity to be a team leader for one of the challenges and I learned so much.” Rotary Club President David Lowe presented Adam with his course certificates and congratulated him on his successful completion of what was a very demanding and tiring week of challenges.

Hadleigh Physiotherapy are delighted to be able to offer real time ultrasound scanning in clinic, with Helen Forth, our pelvic health physiotherapist. Real time ultrasound is the same type of imaging used when someone is pregnant to view their unborn baby. Physiotherapists use it to visualise muscles in order to assess how well they are working. It can be a very useful learning tool for clients who are unsure if they are exercising correctly, or who struggle to feel their deep “core” stability muscles. The cylinder of stability formed by the deep abdominals, pelvic floor muscles, deep spinal muscles and the diaphragm is vitally important, and often needs retraining for people with low back or pelvic pain, and many other musculoskeletal conditions. Many people find it difficult to know whether they are exercising these muscles correctly – this is where an ultrasound scan can be incredibly helpful. The physiotherapist will hold a probe against your skin, using some gel for contact, and can then show you how your muscles are working on the screen. You can then learn how to exercise them correctly for optimum function. Whether you are an existing Pilates client, a patient currently having treatment with one of our physiotherapists, or simply curious, real time ultrasound scanning could be for you. Please call the practice to enquire on 01473 810 185.

We had a presence at the ‘Hadleigh On Show’ event on the same day and saw many old friends and riders as they passed our table. I had my very own poster that generated lots of interest. We think we may have picked up some more helpers, you know who you are, and a big thank you to you three. It will be great to have you on board. Getting cold and wet is part of the joy of involvement with horses, as many of my readers will know. The maintenance team has a brilliant way of keeping warm, however, and if you’d like to find out what it is, do come up here and join it! Pumpkins, fireworks, and rehearsals for Christmas nativity plays all contribute to the rapid pace of the Autumn term. Here we push on for our riders’ achievements and progress and everyone enjoys the signs of success, however great or small they may be. I know Margaret will be looking out for a baby from our riders’ or volunteers’ families to take the part of Jesus at our carol service on December 7th. What are you up to this month? If you feel time is dragging, or your own four walls are closing in on you, why not try something new? There is a valuable slot here for everybody, whatever your skills, or lack of them. We horses need help with everything, from making coffee for the volunteers to working a computer, our four hooves do a remarkable job for disabled riders but we can’t manage the practicalities without human help. I know the lovely volunteers and their riders are suckers for cake. What a surprise they got when Teresa, of the Italian Cook Book fame, arrived with a large cake tin one Friday last month. Not only that but she has raised several hundred pounds for us by sales of the book, so it’s another huge thank you from the herd and the (hungry) people here. Chao! The Band will be playing lots of great music, for Latin, ballroom dance with sections for swing Jive, and multi participation dances so something for everyone who enjoys dance. As a special treat, as this will probably be the last year at The Delphi, a local professional singer Nettie Osman is booked to sing two sets of 60’s songs to create a great party atmosphere. The Delphi ballroom will be decorated in the Art Deco style with a Hollywood theme. This dance gives those who attend the chance to work off the mince pies and Christmas cake and at the same time help a wonderful local charity that supports patients following major heart surgery and their families. Last year’s masquerade dance raised £700 and was truly memorable. Tickets for the event can be purchased from the Sudbury Tourist Office or direct from dancewithussuffolk@outlook.com or just call 07909993799 for more information.

I have a 10 year old staffie called Winston who has been in his wheelchair for 2 years. He gets lots of attention and fuss when he is out and about. He is our poster boy at the fundraisers, his wheelchair cost £484, this is a lot of money for some dog owners to afford, the reason why I set up fundraising events. Just recently we have helped another dog local to Sudbury, it has been so nice to meet this dog, I don’t get chance to meet many the within dogs helped. SESAW News written by Ollie this month! Kenneth has been out and about again, this time he met his public at our £1 Sale in Newton Green last month. He was pleased to have a photo with the cute little granddaughter belonging to one of our local volunteers. Thank you to everyone who helped raise £685 which will go towards caring for the rescued animals this winter. Our last fundraising event of the year is our Christmas Fair, 10-3pm on 17th November at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX. There will be gifts, cards decorations, clothes and accessories, pet items, books, CDs, DVDs, a big tombola and raffle. Refreshments and snacks available including lots of homemade cake. Meanwhile, please remember to keep your pets safe during the firework season, there are lots of ways to help your animals, ask your Vet for advice. Don’t forget about wildlife either. Check for hedgehogs before lighting the bonfire, they love nesting in the leaves and twigs. Whilst thinking about the garden, this may be a good time to install a bird feeding station if you don’t already have one. Of course this will be a great temptation to me and my kind so position it where cats cannot reach it. Despite the recent rain, the Environment Agency says water levels are low, creating a small pond would help birds and amphibians. Your county Wildlife Trust can advise you. Thinking about tasty snacks, it’s time for dinner before finding a cosy bed for me, Ollie (the Black) Cat. Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare, Reg.Charity No.1124029, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP. Tel: 01787 210888, www.sesaw.co.uk. Check opening times before visiting in November.
Right to reply Wow! Peter Thorogood has really excelled this time with another fact-free rant about Babergh’s possible name change in last month’s Sudbury Community News. I will start with correcting all the inaccuracies before putting the case for renaming the district. Firstly, he suggests that the report to be debated by Council has the title ‘XXXX’. I can assure him that the published version on our Website has a full name and report number: the title he quotes is obviously from an early draft before a number had been allocated to it. I wonder where he got it from? (A rhetorical question, I know where). Secondly, the precise cost is not known yet but, based on experience elsewhere, it can be kept to less than £10,000 and so we will allocate no more than this and expect to spend a lot less. As Cabinet member for Finance, I certainly wouldn’t approve of anything that would waste money as we strive to balance the budget and have a sound financial strategy for the future. We are in contact with and learning from authorities who have done this. We will not change things that don’t need changing immediately. For instance, we won’t be repainting our vehicles or replacing other signage until necessary, instead we will make changes as things reach the end of their life. This is especially easy for us as ‘South Suffolk’ already appears in our logo. And ‘cupboards full of new stationery’? When was Peter Thorogood last in an office? A 21st century office doesn’t have reams of pre-printed stationery that would need replacing: everything is in the form of Word templates and most correspondence is sent via email attachments so that paper use is minimised. We are going paperless for all Councillors too. Let’s look at Peter’s other myths. We have NOT sold our former HQ in Hadleigh (or, indeed, other assets): we are converting it through our new property development company, Babergh Growth Ltd. The profit will be used to support services, as with all our other investments. Councillors’ minimum salary of £10,500? No, the basic remuneration is £5,000. There is additional remuneration for the chairman and deputy chairman of the council, chairs and vice-chairs of committees, cabinet members and the leader and deputy leader. All this is publicly available information on our Website. Finally, Hamilton Road and the bus station, Belle Vue and the ‘eyesore’ behind the town hall. There is nothing more that can be said about Belle Vue at this stage: next month will see firm plans being put out for consultation. The site behind the town hall belongs to Sudbury TC. In conjunction with Suffolk County Council, we expect to see progress on the relocation of the buses soon. Our Hamilton Road prospectus has generated interest from potential partners and we hope to be able to put together a regeneration scheme soon. This is probably a good point to return to the reasons for our name change because there is a connection here. Firstly, I wish to reassure readers that the proposed name change is not about pronunciation and it is unfortunate, although I suppose inevitable, that the media have picked up on this as it makes for a great story. We want to align with the names in use in the rest of the county now: since recent mergers, we now have East, Mid and West Suffolk councils. Most importantly, though, is our increasing need to promote the district externally to attract inward investment and, along with our own investments, have the ability to continue to deliver services to our residents. Obviously, everyone in Suffolk knows where we are, but the name ‘Babergh’ simply doesn’t have the recognition elsewhere that we need and the benefits to us are potentially huge. As leader, I know this from attending meetings and conferences around the country. The contrast with the other district names in the county, which are all now very clear, is much starker. There are real advantages of changing the name now and we believe that it will prove to be a good investment for the district. Cllr John Ward, Leader, Babergh District Council, Cabinet Member for Finance
