More than £420,000 in developer contributions is to be ploughed back into communities – funding a study into Thurston railway station, the renovation of Gainsborough’s House, and improved play equipment and bus facilities for villages.
Cabinet members for Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils met on 5th September to agree the latest round of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding. This latest allocation is the ninth round of CIL funding and brings the total allocation delivered to the districts to more than £11m since May 2018.
Receiving the largest sum of money in the awards, Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury will be supported with more than £152,500 to continue its ongoing renovation as a key part of the Sudbury Vision.
Two of Britain’s greatest landscape artists, Gainsborough and Constable, hail from Suffolk, and
the historic house is set to fulfil the role of a national gallery for the painters – featuring new galleries, internationally significant art collections, a panoramic studio, learning spaces and café.
Closed to the public as work got underway in 2019, the £10m Gainsborough’s House project has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic but will now reopen to all in November.
Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House said: “Three years of building works in the face of unprecedented circumstances have brought this vision to life. I’d like to thank the public for their thoughts, support and donations, together with every trust, fund and agency that has helped make this gallery a reality. In particular, I would like to thank Babergh District Council, without whose support the project could not have happened.” continued page 2

Make sure you can help your partner or a parent, should they need assistance
73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can’t make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can’t make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility
Similarly,companies.a
next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any.
What is needed to be able to help?
To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).
Common reasons for needing to help
Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/ partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident.
What happens if LPAs are not in place?
If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare.
What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney?
LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:
• Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home).
• Health and Welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves.
Discuss Powers of Attorney for yourself, a partner or parent To talk to a local lawyer about Lasting Powers of Attorney and to find out whether you or a loved one should have them, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk and ask to speak to a member of our Private Client Department.

The ongoing renovation of Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury£152,504. The historic house is set to become a national gallery for local artists Gainsborough and Constable – featuring new galleries, internationally significant art collections, a panoramic studio, learning spaces and a café.
Cllr Jan Osborne, Cabinet Member for Housing and ward councillor for Sudbury North West, said: “Gainsborough’s House is a site of truly national significance. Suffolk’s beautiful art and rich history being displayed in its homeland is fantastic for Sudbury and the county as a whole. I’m delighted to see the project so close to completion and cannot wait to see the reaction of our town when the doors to the gallery are opened.”
Improving CCTV provision, Sudbury - £5,416.21. This latest investment in CCTV at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre is in addition to the town’s existing CCTV system. The bid emphasised the importance of preventing and detecting crime to make Sudbury safer for residents. The extra money focuses on the area of the town around the centre, further contributing to the detection and deterrence of crime in town.
Community Bus Parking Area, Sudbury - £2,024.72 . Approved under delegated powers before the cabinet meeting was the CIL bid for parking spaces suitable for larger minibuses for Go Start Community Transport, which provides accessible transport for pensioners, people with disabilities, school children, other voluntary bodies, charities and registered not-for-profit organisations.
The larger parking spaces on the Alexander Road Industrial Estate in Sudbury have been secured on previously unused council land.
A Go Start Community Transport spokesperson said: “GoStart passengers and volunteers are very pleased to acknowledge with thanks the support of Babergh District Council, in particular with the arrangements for parking of our vehicles but also in other ways that support has been provided over the last few years.”

An update on Create (The Bridge Project)
Last month, we ended our news update with the teaser that our new shop, Create, was due to open in Borehamgate imminently. Well, we are delighted to announce that we are now fully up and running!
Create by The Bridge Project is a bright, relaxed space where both members of our community and our students can paint a variety of pottery items, browse local crafts or enjoy a tea, coffee, or soft drink
with a slice of cake. Our staff comprises, in part, students of The Bridge Project’s Day Service who are absolutely thriving in their roles and very happy to help. Unfortunately, many of our students would struggle to cope with the daily stresses and requirements of a ‘regular’ job. Create’s mission is to therefore provide our students with an environment where they can learn, participate in, and experience the world of work in a safe, encouraging, and nurturing space.
We have many exciting plans for Create which includes running community groups as well as offering a variety of classes and workshops. Our much-loved dementia support group, De-Caf, is also back and will be held at Create every Monday at 11am (please email harry.freeman@ thebridgeproject.co.uk for more info). De-caf is a friendly group which focuses on supporting those with dementia and their careers, offering a safe space to speak to likeminded individuals, enjoy lunch and engage in fun activities including quizzes.
Additional groups currently in the pipeline include Art for Wellness, Parent and Baby, and SEN Paint Your Own. As we move closer to Halloween, we will offer after school PYO sessions and children’s party packages.
Last month we took part in the Macmillan Big Coffee Morning which ran the entire week from 24th September. Our students were in charge to provide LOTS of cake, strong coffee, interactive games and a raffle. We also have some cupcake trinket boxes to paint, with a £2 donation from each activity going towards Macmillan.
We very much look forward to welcoming you to Create. Until next time…

Hello to you all, and hope you enjoyed all the lovely sunny days. Now we have the winter to look forward to!!!, as well as Christmas and the lovely shows we visit each year. We start with a visit to Brick Lane on 1st October to celebrate their 30th year with a birthday party.
19th October, Poll Hill Garden Centre, and fingers crossed they are all dressed up ready for Christmas, giving ideas for presents to buy, and plenty of decorations.
Talking of decoration, brings me to my favourite venue - Christmas at THURSFORD. As usual I have 2 dates for this fantastic entertainment with a “wow” added to it with all the lights and decoration. If you have never been before, why not join us this year? We are going on Wednesday 9th and Sunday 20th November.
Failing that, how about the Co-op Juniors, when around 100 well trained children put on a fabulous show at Snape Maltings following a seasonal lunch, your choice of two or three courses. We end the year 2022 with a visit to Weston Super Mare for a 5 day “Turkey and Tinsel (as Christmas but cheaper because it is too early) - sorry that one is fully booked.
This brings us unto next year - 2023, -( it only seems a few weeks ago we were doing this for 2022), - where did those months go?? We start with our regular visit to Brick Lane for the Adult pantomime on 8th Februarya 3 course lunch followed by an afternoon of laughter, and all good clean fun. We usually come home with sore cheeks from laughing!! 27th - 30th March
If you have any destinations for day trips or holidays that you would like to do, please let us know. We are open to suggestions.
Looking forward to hearing from you either a phone call -land line 01787 310982, or mobile 07887 868259 or e mail 22patron24@gmail.com Hopefully what they saw will inspire them to follow in the footsteps of Roy, Stokes, Buttler
Ietcthas been a much better month for the 1st XI, with three wins on the bounce against Maldon, Worlington and Wivenhoe This despite plenty of availability and injury issues Our overseas player Kudzai Maunze has scored two match winning centuries in those games all the more remarkable since it has become apparent that he has been playing with a fractured thumb Dom Manthorpe has also been chipping in with valuable contributions with both bat and ball, especially his 79 in the aforementioned Worlington game when he helped rescue the side from 88 6 With a tilt at the title now looking doubtful , to finish as the leading Suffolk club would be a realistic target What’s up with the Twos? We seem to have lost that winning feeling Two close ish games chasing against Nowton and Earl Stonham were followed by two heavy defeats in which we only bowled a handful of overs and took one solitary wicket A couple more wins are needed from somewhere to keep us safe from any relegation fears, but with a tough August ahead that won’t be
Teasyhere is no doubt about performance of the month that goes to Ben Daniels for his 117 not out in the Sunday side’s game at Vitec While others were suffering from the previous night’s excesses at the cocktail evening and feeling decidedly Rougham, Ben rocked up, fresh as a daisy, for his first game of the season But that is only half the story, as when he was joined by Martin Grayling at the crease the score was 91 8 They proceeded to put on 130 unbroken runs a new club record for the 9th wicket
The Suffolk T20 Plate competition has gone well for us, with four wins out of four meaning that we have qualified we think for the Finals Day for the first time in September Justin Toombs, Arran Tampion and Ryan Phillips have all made 50s in these games The Ladies have had a midsummer break but resume at the end of July with their last four fixtures August will be another massive month for cricket, with three Ashes Tests and

During her year as President of Sudbury Rotary Club, Gloria Woods, asked members to support local charities. These included The Christopher Centre, Compassion and Sudbury Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB), which had received financial support from the Rotary Club earlier in Gloria’s ‘year’. Fund-raising had been more problematic due to Covid restrictions in 2021 and early 2022, but at a buffet lunch held in the beautiful garden of Malcolm and Judith Offord held in late August, with 30 members and friends of Rotary enjoying the sun and each other’s company, Gloria was delighted to announce that she was able to present a cheque for £1,500 to Elaine Gorman to further support the work of the ElaineCAB. said, “The CAB is seeing more people in distress, especially families, due to their income not meeting their basic needs and the CAB has been doing all they can to distribute what welfare has been made available when looking at ways to improve this situation. The CAB is grateful for the ongoing support from the Rotary Club who are always so generous to us and appreciate the service we deliver locally.”
Malcolm and his wife had invited Rotarians to share lunch with them to celebrate his membership of the Club, most notably serving as President and for many years organising the annual Christmas Tree Festival, which always raised thousands of pounds to support local charities.
Sudbury Rotary was delighted to support Nathan Brett as the Club’s Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) candidate. Nathan attended a week long course at Grafham Water in September and we hope he will come along to our meeting on 17 October and tell us more about this time

Thomas Griggs, who lived in Cross Street also had a successful business making bunting for flags with an outlet in America. Outworkers in Sudbury were kept busy with his many orders. The first choice for this bunting was the Admiralty and any surplus could be sold elsewhere.
In 1813 a Major Armisted commissioned a Baltimore firm run by Mary Bickersgill to make a flag with the dimensions of 30ft X 42ft. This flag had 15 stripes and 15stars reflecting the number of States that had that time joined the union. Realising that if more States joined the union there would be too many stripes, so they went back to 13 stripes, reflecting the original Union and the number of stars would reflect the number of States in the union. It was said that this flag was flown at the battle of Fort McHenry, Baltimore, however other reports stated that a smaller flag was flown, but this is unlikely as the larger flag is now in the Smithsonian Museum where it was restored. The tradition was that part of the flag was buried with the troops who had died in the battle, the museum could only preserve the flag as it was after the battle.
In 1999 or 2000 a group of Americans were being shown around Sudbury by the Historian Barry Wall who happened to mention Griggs and the bunting. In 2001 Barry received a letter from the Smithsonian Museum requesting if it was known which dyes were used in the bunting, as they knew the breed of sheep from where the fleece has been obtained (it was Lincolnshire Long Wool), but they could not identify the dyes. Later that year it was suggested to Barry that it could be worth asking the Admiralty if they had an example of Grigg’s bunting, this they had and were happy to let the Smithsonian use it to take a DNA sample; this proved that the flag was indeed made from Sudbury bunting.
Two years after the Battle of Fort McHenry, the flag inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem, this was sung to music composed by John Stafford Smith and almost a century later in 1913 the poem and music became the official United States National Anthem. So, Sudbury is an important, mainly unknown part of American history.

‘After a difficult 2 years we are pleased to offer face-to-face Registrations to the community in Sudbury’, says Stephanie Maynard, Service Delivery Manager, ‘we know that travelling to other offices to register births has been frustrating for new parents and the Sudbury team are once again enjoying meeting young families here in the centre of Sudbury’.
Sudbury Register Office can also offer a personal appointment for bereaved families to register a death, during which certificates and paperwork for Funeral Directors can be issued. ‘Registering a death is hard but necessary. In our Sudbury Office we pride ourselves on making the appointment as easy and personal as we can and being able to offer a local appointment is important’, Stephanie continues. ‘Most registrations that we carry out are for events that occur in Suffolk’, ‘but people don’t realise that if the event occurred elsewhere we are able to forward declarations to anywhere in England or Wales, so parents whose baby was born at Colchester Hospital or The Rosie in Cambridge for example can come to us if Sudbury is the closest office for them.’
Registrations in Suffolk are by appointment only Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays and can be made online www.suffolk.gov.uk/births-deathsand-ceremonies or by calling 0345 607 2060.
Additionally, Registrars can take Notices of Marriage and Civil Partnerships for couples residing in Suffolk tying the knot anywhere in the country and can complete the paperwork required for marriages abroad as well! If you wish to marry or form a civil partnership at Sudbury Town Hall, or an approved premises in the district, please telephone 0345 607 2080 (Stowmarket). Life can be up one day and down the next. Before the sad loss of our Queen last month, our ladies were enjoying running a Rummage Sale in the middle of another heatwave. They raised over £1500 and some of the visitors were also interested in acquiring a new pet, much to Mum’s delight.
Now, in keeping with the melancholy mood, Autumn has arrived and our thoughts turn to the months ahead. The Christmas Fair at the Old School in November is our last event of the fundraising season and volunteer numbers have dropped so we have stopped accepting donated items until next year. Some of our supporters sell online so if you have anything special, please leave a message on the answerphone or email sue.wilson317@btinternet. com before bringing them in. We will, of course, continue to accept CLEAN bedding and towels but NO PILLOWS, CUSHIONS or feather duvets. Our Volunteers enjoy their days at SESAW as can be seen in the photo. Now that’s something you don’t see ever y day Maisie, the spr inger and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Char ity Pot cream to SESAW Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back Apparently it was the Google Ear th guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 ̊ camera And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles That dog is SO embarrassing! I should explain about Maisie She arr ived at SESAW one Chr istmas, in great pain, hardly able to walk Luckily our talented vet was able to correct a bir th defect on her legs She patiently endured a long recover y per iod, remaining calm as her dressings were changed and licking ever yone who cared for her Two years later our Spaniel enjoys life, goes for shor t walks and loves nothing better than a squeaky toy

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre
Grass at last! The horses are so grateful that their fields recover quickly after the drought. Parys and Tilly discussed its quality together in mid. September, as my snap However, shows.as news is not so wonderful, we were unable to open up at the start of term since the building works continued. The workmen did their best but the Centre had to remain shut to facilitate their labours and avoid accidents in the vicinity of so much hazardous stuff.
There has been a massive push to get rid of old and unused equipment too: Babs and I are just about able to see over the tops of the boxes in our room but you wouldn’t be able to ride in here! So the plan is to be open on October 3rd, we keep our hooves crossed. Meanwhile the live horses have been costing a lot extra since June, when Lyn had to start providing short feeds for them all. Very hard dry ground caused shoes to come loose so there were more visits from the blacksmith as well. Whilst Babs and I feel smug that we cost nothing if our electricity is off, we do appreciate that the others have to be kept in good condition. So once again, thank you to our supporters for keeping the Centre going through thick and thin!
Watch this space for more horse news next month and hopefully pictures of our lovely riders back in the saddle.

Film Club At The Granary filmclublectures.co.uk
I am Simon Frampton a film maker and lecturer and have spent many happy years working in Cinema. In January 2011 I set up the Sudbury Film Club. The idea was to provide a series of lectures on the art and technique of films. Every month since then the club has met without fail even going online during the pandemic to consider the merits of individual film actors, directors, genres such as film-noir and many other film related topics. It doesn’t matter how much knowledge you have about film. The important thing is to bring like- minded people together to form a sociable group. In the words of one of our long-time members….” If you like Cinema you will love Film Club”
73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf.
Here is what you can expect from each meeting: An original lecture written each month covering the subject illustrated with many film clips. A full length film based on the topic and a discussion group afterwards over coffee or tea for those who desire it. Obviously you do not have to stay for all three parts of the programme!
For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any.
What is needed to be able to help?
Details on pricing and detailed notes on each forthcoming lecture are available on the website filmclublectures.co.uk Sudbury Film Club meets at the Granary, Quay Lane, Sudbury, CO10 2AN All lectures begin at 10.30am on the second Friday of each month. New members join on the day
To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).
Autumn 2022 Film Club Programme
Common reasons for needing to help
Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident.
What happens if LPAs are not in place?
Richardson Redgrave Dynasty Friday November 11th 10.30am Granary The Redgrave family is a British acting dynasty, spanning five generations. Members of the family include Sir Michael Redgrave, Rachel Kempson, Tony Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave Corin Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave, Joely Richardson, Jemma Redgrave, and Natasha Richardson. Sir Michael Redgrave was one of Britain’s foremost film actors his films included Thunder Rock 1942, The Browning Version 1951 and The Dambusters 1955. His daughter Vanessa has been in equably famous films such as: A Man For All Seasons 1966, Blow-Up 1966, The Charge of The Light Brigade 1968, ISADORA 1968, JULIA 1977 (won an Oscar) Prick Up Your Ears 1987 and Atonement 2007
Nouvelle Vague Friday December 9th 10.30am Granary
French New Wave (French: La Nouvelle Vague) is a French art film movement that emerged in the late 1950s. The movement was characterized by its rejection of traditional filmmaking conventions in favour of experimentation and a spirit of iconoclasm. New Wave filmmakers explored new approaches to editing, visual style, and narrative, as well as engagement with the social and political upheavals of the era, often making use of irony or exploring existential themes. The New Wave is often considered one of the most influential movements in the history of cinema.
• Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home).
The foremost directors of the movement included: François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Éric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, and Claude Chabrol. Some of their most famous films included: Breathless (1960), Les Bonnes Femmes (1960), Les Quatre Cents Coups (François Truffaut, 1959), Paris nous appartient (1961) and Le Genou de Claire (1960).
• Health and Welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. Discuss Powers of Attorney for yourself, a partner or parent
To talk to a local lawyer about Lasting Powers of Attorney and to find out whether you or a loved one should have them, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk and ask to speak to a member of our Private Client Department. *OPG, 'Your Voice. Derek passed peacefully away in Ipswich Hospital on Tuesday 28th June, after a thirty hour stay. Derek who was 86 years old had lost his mobility and had been bed ridden for the last year of his life. He will be sadly missed.
We are looking forward to Thursday 20th October 2022, when Anne Grimshaw will be our speaker. Collision in the Clouds: who wore the googles is Anne’s story of how, at a WW2 commemoration in France, she was given a pair of flying goggles and the name of the French village where they were found. Anne has a reputation for ‘needing to find out more’ when it comes to historical artefacts, and if you do too, please come along to our meeting as a visitor (£3) or take out annual membership (£10).
Meetings start at 7.30pm at The Old School Community Centre, Long Melford CO10 9DX, Tel: 01787 375329 for more information. A warm welcome is assured & free refreshments are provided.

My oldest child is starting school this month, and, with uniforms and PE kits, the costs are already mounting. The school we got into isn’t within walking distance, so I now need to budget for bus money five days a week too. We’re already pretty stretched, so I’m not sure how to cover these new costs. Is there any extra help I can get?
The start of a school year can be tough for many people’s budgets, so you’re not alone in your worries. But there is help available.
On the Citizens Advice website, we have lots of information on the support you might be entitled to for school-related costs. If you’re claiming benefits, it’s worth checking if you can get extra help for things like school lunches, transport and uniforms.
Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 automatically get free school meals. For older children, you can apply for free school meals if you claim certain types of benefits. The full list is available on the Citizens Advice website, and includes Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit and Income
You’veSupport.mentioned you’re worried about transport costs. For children aged five to 16, your local education authority might be able to offer free or discounted transport if you’re not able to walk to the school. Contact them directly to find out how they can support you.
Your local education authority might also help you with activity and school uniform costs if you’re on a low income. You’re probably considered to be on a low income if you get meanstested benefits like Universal Credit or Housing Benefit. There are also some local charitable schemes that can help - check with your school, as they will usually know if these kinds of schemes are in your area. Schools can sometimes also advise on finding cheap or free second-hand uniforms.
If your child is disabled or has a health condition, you can also claim Disability Living Allowance (this isn’t means-tested)
A lot of peoples’ budgets are feeling the squeeze at the moment, but it’s important to remember that help is available with starting school costs. For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact We are providing advice by telephone email –10am – 1pm.

TO OUR QUEEN
Thank you Ma-am for your devotion
I say this now with great emotion
You’ve ruled this land for so long
With dignity and love that’s so strong
You made a pledge at the start
Kept that promise in your heart
You’ve never let your people down
With pride and glory, you wore the crown
Your realm has been over many a land
Where many you have taken their hand
We’ve shared with you joy and pain
Never seen you falter with strain
You helped us greet each New Year
With Hope and Faith without fear
Embracing all the usual, the new Setting an example in all you do
Remembering too, your other life
As daughter, sister and a wife
Leaving your children in our care
An honour that we all will share
Now it’s time to say goodbye
With heavy heart and tears we cry Thank you Ma-am for everything For giving your son, now our King.
GOD SAVE THE KING
