It’s a high spot in the community calendar and this year was no exception. It was lovely to see the visiting Queens courts from other areas. Our court did Sudbury and themselves proud, they looked fabulous.

Mixed quad composite crew of Amelia Moule; Martha Bullen; Byron Bullen (Sudbury) and Ben Mackenzie (Peterborough), setting a new course record, winning by 4 lengths in 02:07.

Sudbury Regatta on Friars Meadow The 3rd August was a gorgeous day with brilliant sunshine, blue skies and perfect rowing conditions. A beautiful summers day on the picturesque meadow, now packed full with competitors, boats, trailers, tents and spectators sitting expectantly on hay bales along the river bank waiting for the racing to start.

By 8am competitors were on the water and ready to race in the planned 204 races over 87 events! Sudbury achieved a brilliant set of wins, many excellent semi final races were seen from all crews and Sudbury set some new course records Wins came from our Juniors in the WJ14 double from Amy Wallace and Grace Power who won easily in a time of 03:05. In the WJ15 Evie Prager also won easily in 03:00 and set a new course record. In the WJ18 double Martha Bullen and Amelia Moule won in 4 lengths in a time of 02:32. The Mixed quad composite crew of Amelia Moule; Martha Bullen; Byron Bullen (Sudbury) and Ben Mackenzie (Peterborough), also set a new course record, winning by 4 lengths in 02:07. Jen Titterington won as part of 2 composite crews with Lea rowing club in the W8 and W1. 4x, winning in a time of 01:09 and by 2 lengths in a time of 02:23 respectively (which was a new course record).

One of Sudbury’s new categories, the Parent and child event saw a great win from Tony and Harry Moule, who looked supreme, winning in 5 lengths in a time of 02:28. Kate and Amy Wallace came through their Parent and Child semi final race to easily win, however they lost in the final against Gillian Lindsay and her daughter Emily from Wimbledon High school. G. Lindsay was a silver medalist at the Sydney Olympiad in 2000, so only loosing by 3 lengths was still a great achievement for our Sudbury mother and daughter double!

The Adult squads also gave great performances and set several course records. Callum Power (Sudbury) and Lucy Freeman (Teeside university) won the Mixed doubles, setting a new course record, by 1 length in a time of 03:01.

MxMasE double of Sean Moriarty and Sarah Stirling won by 2 lengths in 02:44, with S. Stirling going on to win the W.MasE singles race by 1ft in a time of 03:01 and setting a new course record.

Robin King and Simon White won the Open MasD/E double in 02:30 by half a length (setting a new course record) and Sophie Lovegrove and Jen Ward continued their successes with a win in the MasD double in 02:55 by one and half lengths. The Op. Men’s D/E four, cox Tricia Fincham; Lee Adams; Stephen Nichols; Tim Hysom and Paul Adams also took a very well deserved win in 02:21 by 2 lengths.

The Sudbury Men’s 8 wowed the crowds with their stunning performance in the Sprint Eights. Expertly coxed by Tricia Fincham they took an excellent racing line just pulling ahead at the halfway point with the other crew then pulling almost level again and racing side by side down the second half of the course.

The bank of spectators waited with baited breath to hear from the umpire that, (I from bow) Tim Wallace; Robin King; Mark Tyrie; Pete Donovan; Tim Hysom; Stephen Nichols; Paul Adams and Lee Adams had indeed seized their triumph in a time of 01:04, winning by a nail biting quarter of a length!

Sudbury Regatta was once again a tremendously pleasurable and successful event.

The club members worked tirelessly over 3 days to ensure that all visiting club’s rowers, spectators and Sudbury Town had an entertaining and memorable event to visit and watch.

Stephen Nichols, Chairman of Sudbury Rowing Club thanked all of the visiting clubs and rowers for their participation, enthusiasm and brilliant rowing, who helped to make the event such a delightful one. A fantastic day of racing was enjoyed by everyone!

UK’s First SpeedPie is a Messy Success Britain’s first ever SpeedPie was held in the Arena at Sudbury Carnival on Sunday 11th August 2019. Children were tasked with throwing many shaving-foam pies at the UK Pie Party volunteers as possible in five minutes. Sina Schack, Nicky Vere-Compton and Elisabeth Townshend were the volunteers on the receiving end.

The SpeedPie has raised over £500 for Children with Cancer UK, who fund research into better treatment for children’s cancers, resulting in more children ringing that end of treatment bell.

Nicky Vere-Compton, the Party Leader of the UK Pie Party who takes over 1,000 pies in the face every year for charity, says. “This was Britain’s first ever SpeedPie, and the children loved it. We love fundraising for cancer charities, using pie in the face humour.

This SpeedPie will be the first of many. It’s a great way to get as many children as possible participating in live action slapstick comedy, giving them a good laugh and a fun time, while also raising money for Children with Cancer UK. The money raised will fund research into better, more humane treatment for Children with cancer, resulting in more children surviving cancer.”

The UK Pie Party travels to festivals, fairs and family fun days, taking pies in the face for cancer charities and hospices. Since it was founded in 2015 the Pie Party has raised nearly £10,000 from over 50 events, gaining Community Interest Company status in 2016.

We had an enjoyable time on our outing last month, and were very lucky with the weather. On approaching Hunstanton there was a very light drizzle, which cleared up within 5 minutes of our arrival, and stayed dry for the rest of the day, although we could not call it “Sunny Hunny”. A couple of hours here, and we were on the move again, through the lovely Norfolk countryside to Sheringham.

This month we are going further afield to Skegness, making the most of the daylight. Next month we are cruising along the Trent, complete with a roast lunch on board, and later in the month following a carvery lunch, spending a few hours at Gt. Yarmouth. Fingers crossed we do not get too much hassle from the roadworks in Sudbury at the start of our journey on both of these excursions!!

That brings us to October, when we have our last 5 day holiday for this year, - a first visit to Warner’s, at Sinah Warren on Hayling Island, and then come the Christmas shows. The way this year has flown past that will be here before we know it!!! I do still have some seats available for Thursford, -- Wednesday 6th and Sunday 17th November, this year we are having all raised seating. Our final outing for this year is a Christmas lunch, continuing our journey to see the Co-p Juniors rendition of “Christmas Spectacular” as they are celebrating their 15th year at Snape Maltings for their Christmas show.

A Guide to Natural Feeding: Part 3 The Switch Natural feeders sometimes refer to the time they moved their dog onto raw food as ‘the switch’. The switch itself can usually be made instantly. A very small percentage of dogs have to be weaned onto raw food but the vast majority take to it immediately. The only dogs that shouldn’t eat a 100% raw diet are those with a compromised immune system or those that have just undergone bowel surgery. The best approach is to fast your dog for a day and then to start them on their new, natural diet.

What about Bacteria?

Yes, raw food is covered in bacteria. The problem is, human beings have been made paranoid about bacteria. There’s no getting away from the fact that approximately 1 in 10 pieces of meat off the shelf of your supermarket will have Salmonella on it, more than half contain campylobacter. In fact, there are more bacteria on a shopping trolley handle than on a piece of raw chicken.

Dogs are surprisingly well equipped to deal with bacteria. Their saliva contains lysozyme, an enzyme that destroys harmful bacteria. Their short digestive tract is designed to push through food and bacteria quickly without giving bacteria time to colonise. The extremely acidic environment in the gut is also a good bacteria colonisation deterrent. Dogs do not carry salmonella in their saliva or on their skin, not even after eating 100% salmonella-infected raw food. But, when they do eat salmonella-infected food, about one-third of them will show a moderate concentration of salmonella in their faeces – yet no clinical signs of being sick. The only way a human can catch salmonella from a dog is by, to put it bluntly, eating its you-know what! Incidentally, dogs eating a processed food diet are just as likely to have salmonella in their system, as it is easy to pick up in parks and elsewhere. x

What to consider when choosing a hearing care provider If you are not hearing as well as you used to and have decided to take action, deciding which route to take can be overwhelming.

You need to find a qualified and highly respected audiologist you can trust.

Your hearing is a vital and intimate part of who you are, therefore it is important to know you’re dealing with an expert who is on your side. Here are some key criteria to consider when seeking hearing care: 1. Professional qualifications The most important thing to consider when seeking any healthcare service is their qualifications: are they registered with the correct professional bodies? You need to feel confident that you’re getting the quality of care you need.

The accreditations to look out for are RHAD (Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser) and FSHAA or MSHAA (A fellow or member of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists). I believe that our very special part of the world has the basis for a brilliant tourism offer and every upwards tick in local visitor numbers adds to the positive prospects of our small business owners, who depend so heavily upon traditional trade through their doors rather than clicks in a virtual domain.

Tourism is worth about £2bn to the Suffolk economy and in 2017 nearly 250,000 people were employed by hospitality businesses in our region. I would also add anecdotally from my experience of enjoying our various pubs and restaurants that the hospitality sector offers a key chance for young people to sample employment for the first time, even if many then go on to careers in other sectors.

As such, as the Chair of the South Suffolk Taskforce, I have made one of our workstreams the visitor economy and the industries that it supports. In particular, we have focused on what we can do to make more of our unique cultural offer, with my constituency containing rich, rare links to two of our most famous painters: Gainsborough and Constable.

Certainly, there is much to be positive about. On the Shotley Peninsula, the tourism action group is creating exciting events that have drawn more visitors to the area, in particular celebrating the association with Arthur Ransome’s ‘Swallows and Amazons’ adventures. At Flatford, the real-life scene of Constable’s world famous ‘Hay Wain’ painting, the National Trust have recently purchased the last privately-owned property in the hamlet. In Hadleigh, Benton End House, once the home of Sir Cedric Morris - who opened the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing - has been purchased with the view of opening it to the public and artists. Artists who have previously studied at the property include Maggi Hambling, Joan Warburton and Bettina Shaw-Lawrence.

Finally, there is the planned redevelopment of Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury which will create an impressive new gallery and act as a national cultural centre. My first ever Prime Minister’s Question to Theresa May celebrated this ambitious project and I hope it will help to crystallise a resurgent local tourism sector, boosting vital footfall in our shops.

September’s Advice Column I am renting and have an assured shorthold tenancy. I have been struggling to pay the rent for a few months. I am working full time but my wages aren’t enough. I am only just managing with my other bills and spending. Now I am falling behind on my payments and I am worried about losing my home. What can I do to stop this from happening?

It’s good you’ve looked for help. This is the first step to staying in your home.

Rent arrears, like council tax debt or mortgage arrears, are a priority debt. Non-payment can cause serious problems, such as losing your home.

If the landlord says they plan to evict you, have served you with an eviction notice, or you have letters from court, get advice urgently.

Go through correspondence from your landlord. Compare payments you’ve made to the amount of arrears due, to make sure the numbers agree. Speak to them about why you’re struggling with your rent.

Create a budget by adding up your essential living costs, such as food and energy, and take these away from your income. Use the www.citizensadvice.org.uk budgeting tool and benefits calculator to see if you can increase your income. Try to find cheaper deals on your energy, phone and broadband. Put any spare money towards your debts.

If you’re able to pay off some of the arrears, your landlord may agree to a payment plan, enabling you to pay smaller amounts. Be clear and realistic about your budget. If they don’t agree a plan, or if you feel unable to negotiate alone, go to Citizens Advice.

The payment plan should be written down and signed by the landlord. They can’t evict you without going to court. But if you do get evicted, ask the council for help with housing and benefits. Contact them immediately, they can help you stay in your home.

Boule-in Fête d’Automne A Creative French Harvest Already renowned for its fabulously creative Fêtes, this Autumn The Boule-in, Bildeston’s French Decorative Lifestyle store, has its very first Artist in Residence to add a further artistic flair to its Fête d’Automne (Friday 20th until Sunday 22nd September). “We’re completely thrilled that Suffolk based artist Anna Dixon-Smith has agreed to join forces with us” says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of The Boule-in.

Pop Chorus opening new group in Long Melford Highly-acclaimed Suffolk community choir Pop Chorus will be launching a new Long Melford group in September.

The fun and friendly choir unashamedly sing great pop songs in harmony, and recent repertoire has included well-known songs from artists as diverse as Florence + The Machine, a-ha and Stereophonics. Members love that they can join without audition, experience or the need to read music. Rehearsals are informal and relaxed, with an emphasis on enjoyment and gently developing singing skills.

Pop Chorus are in great demand to perform locally and members also build confidence by participating in additional activities including workshops, artist collaborations and special events. Recent experiences have included performing at Latitude and First Light festivals, watching The Swingles soundcheck, opening Dermot O’Leary’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show and beatboxing with SK Shlomo! This year the choir are fundraising for FIND (Families In Need), having raised a fantastic £17,000 for Suffolk charity Iceni last year.

“We already have lots of interest from prospective singers in the Long Melford area…” said group leader Sarah George “…I can’t wait to introduce the joy of singing in Pop Chorus to everyone – they’re in for a treat!”

The choir already has over 350 singers in Ipswich (Central and West), Kesgrave, Framlingham, Felixstowe and Stowmarket.

Your spouse or partner needs your help with their financial affairs, but can you assist them?

Commonly with married couples or those in a long-term relationship they each have assets in their own name and in joint names (e.g. bank accounts and the family home). This often leads people to think that they can manage the financial affairs of their spouse or partner, or could do if the need arose; however, this is not the case. Unfortunately, should your spouse or partner become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and you will not be able to deal with organisations on their behalf.

What is needed to be able to help? To assist with your spouse or partner affairs during their lifetime you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means your spouse or partner will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) with a local solicitor. If LPAs have not been made you will not be able to deal with organisations on their behalf.

What happens if I do not have LPAs? Many people need to assist with these matters because their spouse or partner has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident. If you want to help your partner with financial decisions and they did not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with their money and property.

Two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of LPA: Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home).

Health and welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves.

People often think that if necessary, they would be able to make decisions about where their spouse or partner receives care, what type of care they receive and whether they could agree to their receiving life-sustaining treatment. Without an LPA in place, relatives are not able to make these decisions. Doctors, nurses, medical practitioners or Social Services would make them instead.

The generosity of those that purport to govern Suffolk (aka God’s Little Acre) must be admired. Our undermanned Police “Service” have dished out £520,000 of OUR money in 2018/19 in compulsory redundancy pay-outs! We are regularly informed that staffing levels are dangerously low yet 20 police and staff get laid off. If incompetent sack them (as in the private sector), after all they still have their subsidised pensions to exist on. The highest pay off totalled £131,247, £14k in compensation and over £117k in additional pension payments. We now finance a completely pointless over staffed Police Commissioner’s Office all on excessive salaries and pensions whilst our streets see no policing! Their sole remit appears to be penning a regular column in our compliant local press and, as shown, asserting absolutely no authority over the Chief Constable’s handling of finances. This government’s initiative of slashing police numbers by over 20,000 yet introducing Commissioners when none were previously thought necessary is but another example of Westminster’s lack of common sense or financial acumen. But there is nothing that Local Government enjoys more than Empire building.

In answer to Babergh Leader John Ward’s “Right to Reply” in the last issue. Fair enough chum! However you neglected to reply to my one leading question. Following my accusations that Sudbury’s public services, from hospitals to policing etc. have declined beyond recognition since 1985 I therefore ask, name one improvement to our once proud independent Borough in the past 30 years that Babergh have achieved? Simple enough! Anyway, let’s give Babergh and its minions a break and consider our fractured society. With the threat or salvation of Brexit looming, depending on one’s stance, the division in our once famed tolerant country could not be over emphasised.

However what surely does unite us is our contempt and disdain of those that purport to govern us. Three years to prepare and still that useless shower of politicians and senior civil servants have achieved nowt! Likewise those opposing Brexit appear leaderless with various factions jostling to represent the common herd. Probably the most ineffective Prime Minister for decades is replaced by a manic buffoon hosting a rather unsavoury cabinet. Bexiteer or Remainer, surely we all deserve better!

Not one to court popularity I note that, as always, hypocrisy is still the preserve of our establishment. One Jihadi John absconds to Syria to join ISIS. This contemptible spoilt brat realises the error of his ways and asks Mum and Dad to send him funds enough to come home. Despite advice from officials they send him £223 ticket money. The result is they are fined with costs and each receive a 15 month suspended sentence.

Fair enough I hear you utter. But consider, in such circumstances would not many a parent have done the same? Personally I don’t give a damn if he rots in some Arabian cell but the absolute hypocrisy of our establishment should not go unquestioned. His parents get sentenced for sending him £225 whilst we supply Israel the arms to slaughter innocents in Palestine, the Saudis bombs to maim children in the Yemen, and other despotic regimes the means to subjugate their people. So whilst our diplomats and arms manufacturers receive their honours for supplying arms to despots the misguided parents of an idiot are sentenced for sending him £223 for his fare home!

On Saturday 21st September Sudbury will be hosting our Heritage Open Day with many buildings (including our Town Hall) and gardens freely open to all. I personally will be conducting tours of our Historic Masonic Hall, including our beautiful Temple, Members Bar and Museum, on the hour at 1.00, 2.00 and 3.00 so all welcome.

Although Tony Platt has ofďŹ cially completed his duties as President of Sudbury Rotary, one outstanding donation from his year took place on Monday 12 August when representatives of The Richmond Fellowship were able to attend the lunch time meeting. The other two organisations supported by fund-raising during Tony’s presidential year were the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Befriending Scheme, the three charities sharing a total of ÂŁ5,400 raised from a number of events.

On three Wednesdays during the summer holidays, members of Sudbury Rotary supported the ‘Fit and Fed’ project at Pot Kiln school, providing meals and fun activities for a group of primary school children, working alongside volunteers from the Phoenix Marchers. The highlight on 14 August was a trip to Hollow Trees Farm where, despite the heavy rain, everyone enjoyed the day out, including making their own pizzas for lunch.

Several new members have recently been inducted into Sudbury Rotary and have been warmly welcomed. The Club already has corporate members and is looking to encourage more local businesses to become involved. Approval has been given for an additional leaet entitled “Meet some Sudbury Rotariansâ€?. This is designed to dispel the impression that Rotary is a businessman’s club. Far from it! About a third of Sudbury Rotary members are women and the new leaet outlines some of the members showing what a varied background each of them has.

The Club has decided to continue ďŹ nancial support for two children at East Meru School in Tanzania: Prosper Peter and Loveness will be funded until they both reach the end of their primary education. Without this funding their education would be cut short too soon for them to move on to secondary school.

With the success of the new Rotakids at Pot Kiln School, it is hoped to set up more of these Clubs at other local primary schools. Members of Rotakids take responsibility for running their meetings, appoint a president, secretary and treasurer, and keep minutes, as well as planning activities to foster the Rotary ideal of ‘Service above self’. Hannah is Great Cornard Woman of the Year 2019!

A super slimmer has been named Great Cornard’s Slimming World ‘Woman of the Year’ 2019 thanks to her incredible 10st 10lb weight loss. Hannah Squirrell, 32, from Stanstead, has slimmed down by an incredible 10st 10lb from in just 22 months. And now she’s been chosen as her Slimming World groups Woman of the Year.

Hannah, who down-sized from a dress size 28 to a 16, says: “When I first joined group I never dreamt that I would be in the position I am now. Losing weight has made such a big difference to my life. My health has improved, I have more energy, I’m happier and I feel more comfortable in my own skin.”

Hannah joined Slimming World in October 2017 after being told by her GP that she was pre-diabetic. “I successfully lost weight with Slimming World before but I started to put weight back on after having my 2 boys. I tried a number of different ways to lose weight but they usually left me feeling hungry or miserable – or both, in fact. With Slimming World it’s completely different.

“My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat and lose weight. I still eat all my favourite meals, like curries, chilli and my favourite couscous. I just prepare and cook them differently now – and they taste so much better. I never have to miss out and I don’t have to get hung up on weighing and measuring everything I eat. I know it can feel like a big step joining Slimming World because you don’t know what to expect, but, right from the first moment I walked into my group I was made to feel at ease, and the support I’ve received has been amazing. I look forward to going each week to catch up with all of my new friends – I just love it!”

Hannah lost 9lbs in her first week and was blown away that the changes she’d made had such a big impact so quickly. As the weight started to come off, she started to think about how active she was and Hannah now loves walking with her children and dog. She has even taken part in her slimming world groups team walking a 24hr relay for life in aid of cancer research uk.

She says: “I feel like a different woman to the one who walked into Slimming World 22 months ago and winning Woman of the Year is a real honour because there are so many amazing women in our group. I really hope my weight loss can inspire other people to get started on their own journey and know that there’s a whole group of people waiting to support them every step of the way – especially at the Great Cornard 7.30 group. My goal now is to hit my target and stay there for life, which I know I can do.”

Kath Hampshire, who runs the Great Cornard group, says: “I’m so proud of Hannah.

She’s a fantastic ambassador for Slimming World and what she’s achieved is nothing short of incredible. Hannah has just got married and I was honoured to be part of her special day. Seeing her in her dress brought tears to my eyes! She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women – and men – in Great Cornard to change their lives in the same way.”

The Sudbury Gainsborough Probus Club The Probus Club that meets in Sudbury ("The Sudbury Gainsborough Probus Club") is in the process of running a recruitment campaign, aimed at halting the slow decline in its membership.

Probus is a local, national, and international association of retired people who come together in non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit, autonomous clubs which provide regular opportunities for members to meet others in similar circumstances with similar levels of interest, to make new friends, and maintain and expand their interests. Our Club has met in Sudbury for over 25 years.

In its earlier years we organised many events for the benefit of our members and became so popular that there was a waiting list to join.

Today, however, with the attrition of age and the declining health of some of our more senior members, we have reached a point where we need to recruit urgently to maintain viability.

Potential members are those approaching retirement or who have just retired and we anticipate being able to offer social activity, sometimes with a Speaker, and visits to places of interest, as well as having sections, according to demand, dedicated to golf and bowls.

Presently, our chief activities comprise a Luncheon, taking place on the third Wednesday each month at 12-15 in the Masonic Hall, North Street, Sudbury, and a Coffee Morning on the second Tuesday each month at the Mill Hotel, Sudbury.

Sudbury Silk Stories The Sudbury Silk Stories project is searching for details of a silk-clad gymnastics display at a Great Cornard Middle School summer fete over 40 years ago.

The Sudbury Silk Stories project, which is recording stories of current and former employees of Sudbury’s silk industry, has issued a speciďŹ c plea: can anyone provide photos or information on a Great Cornard Middle School summer fete in the 1970s that saw a pupil’s mother provide costumes made of silk from the Stephen Walters mill?

The story, which was told to Project Co-Ordinator Carole Creasey as she interviewed those connected to the silk industry, stated that an employee of Stephen Walters and Sons provided offcuts of silk for the costumes for the gymnastics display at the Summer School Fete. Pupils were laid on the oor, drawn around and the resulting shapes then sewn together to make the costumes. Sudbury Silk Stories would like to talk to anyone who might have photographs or had taken part in the gymnastics display and remembers the costumes being made.

Sudbury Silk Stories wants to include the story of the silk Summer Fete costumes on the project’s new website alongside the interviews with silk industry staff.

The project will also create a short ďŹ lm that will play at the Sudbury Silk Festival on 7th September. Sudbury Silk Stories, funded by Babergh District Council and ÂŁ36,400 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, is looking for the stories of current and former employees of Sudbury’s silk industry. It will explore the social history and changes that have taken place in the local industry, which continues to produce some of Europe’s ďŹ nest silk. The project will record and share the experiences of silk mill staff, to create both a short ďŹ lm and an archive of interviews for the local community and for visitors to learn from.

Terror A very different kind of theatre event is coming to The Quay Theatre in Sudbury from Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th November, when Sudbury Dramatic Society bring the gripping courtroom drama Terror by Ferdinand von Schirach, translated by David Tushingham, to the stage.

A hijacked plane is heading towards a packed football stadium and, ignoring his orders to the contrary, a fighter pilot shoots it down, killing everyone on board. We join him in the courtroom where he is now on trial for murder and the audience are going to be the jury.

Was he right to take the action that he did, potentially saving many more lives by doing so? Supposing one of your loved ones had been a passenger on that plane – or was in the stadium?

Listen to the evidence, make your own judgement, and remember his fate lies entirely in your hands.

The Long Melford Historical and Archaeological Society We are celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year with a host of events in September 2019. On Tuesday 10th September, exactly 50 years to the day since the inaugural meeting, we will be marking this occasion with a meal at the Bull Hotel. All members, both past and present are welcome, so if you would like to join us, please contact the Society to book.

On Sunday 15th September 2019 we will be hosting a ‘History Day’ at the Old School in the village between 11am and 3pm. We will be holding an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ for artefacts that you have found in the village, with identiďŹ cation by an Archaeologist from Suffolk County Council. So do bring along any bits of pottery, coins etc. that you may have found in your garden over the years. At noon there will be the opportunity to attend a talk by the Long Melford Parish Recorder about the 2016 oral history project, which recorded the memories of twelve local people On display will be old photographs, the LMHAS archives, items from the Heritage Centre, our members own collections, maps and reports.

The History Day is FREE to attend and refreshments will be available. We would really appreciate the village’s support in attending, so please do get in touch if you would like more information or to offer items for display.

Our ďŹ rst meeting of the season will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 19th September 2019 at the Old School, where a warm welcome is assured. Faye Minter, Senior Archaeologist at Suffolk County Council will speak to us about ‘Long Melford - Prehistoric to the Anglo-Saxon’. Fundraising from Sudbury Memory Walk beneďŹ ts two local community groups The ďŹ nancial fundraising from this year’s Sudbury Memory Walk, was equally divided between Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance (HDAA) and The Bridge Project’s - Decaf.

Each group will receive ÂŁ1055.15 for much needed funds to keep their various Friends and staff at Together Tuesday in Hadleigh programmes running.

Jerry Thatcher community volunteer, now known by many in Sudbury as the memory walk man, presented a cheque to Jill Mason and members of the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance.

One of the projects that will beneďŹ t from the funds raised is the Ansell Memories CafĂŠ , the HDAA supports this programme with funding each year. A weekly social, creative and physical activity session designed to offer people living with dementia and their family or carers, a relaxed and supportive environment in which they can take part in various activities followed by a light lunch.

Tracey Loynds, development director at Abbeycroft Leisure said: “The Sudbury Memory Walk continues to grow every year as dementia affects so many families. There are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is set to rise to over one million by 2021.� “We are extremely proud to support this event and the work of the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance that we support as part of our commitment to provide active opportunities for our community.�

Planning work has already started on next year’s Sudbury Memory Walk, which saw almost 200 walkers take part this year in May, walking, remembering and raising funds for people and their families living with dementia.

Sudbury Memory Walk 2020 will again take place in May and the date will be announced soon.

The Bridge project will receive their cheque in due course.
