A much loved town charity, which recently appealed for young people to come forward to form a junior committee, has recruited its first members. Helping Hands, which raises money for and campaigns on behalf of adults with learning disabilities which attend the Sudbury Community Hub (formerly the Sudbury Resource Centre) wants to develop a junior committee from which younger people can eventually evolve to the charity’s main committee. Jess Crago, 15, of Long Melford, was the first young person to come forward. She said: “I saw the appeal for young people in the local newspapers and just felt it would be a fantastic thing to get involved with. I like the idea of helping people and supporting the community and hopefully I can learn some new skills as well. I am really looking forward to being involved.” Jess has now been joined by Luke Cresswell, 25, of Sudbury, Chloe Lock, 19, of Great Cornard and Sian Lawson, 15, of Acton and the group has already assisted Helping Hands at the recent Party in the Park event in Sudbury, as well as being shown around the Sudbury Community Hub.

Charity recruits first young people for Junior Committee

NEWTON GREEN GOLF CLUB

All the young people will have the opportunity to take part in various community and fundraising events as well as learning new skills such as minute taking, agenda setting, decision making and understanding more about the public and voluntary sectors. Once we have a few more young people come forward we will form an official junior committee to function in its own right and to feed into the main committee. We are really looking forward to some fresh and innovative ideas coming from the young people who have joined us. “We hope that by involving people at a young age we can develop a generation of community minded individuals who can take over the running of this charity and possibly others when the time is right. We also feel it is very important to encourage younger people to take part in community activities and to become good citizens by giving something back in the areas they live.” Anyone interested in finding out more about Helping Hands plans to form a ‘junior committee’ can contact Mr Owen on 01787374025 or by e-mail on unionjack1@talktalk.net. Buskers wanted! Behind the Scenes at St Peter’s The Friends of St Peter's are holding an Open-Day event on Monday October 28th in the Church on Sudbury’s Market Hill. "Behind the Scenes at St Peter's" will begin at 10.00am and continue throughout the day, finishing at 5.00pm. One purpose of this event is to create as much local awareness as possible of the Church building as a heritage site as well as a community asset in Sudbury. In addition we would like to: • explain the role of the Friends who help to maintain the Church • engage the local community in the early stages of our plans to improve the facilities in the building • and hopefully interest them in what needs to be done on a daily basis too. The Church will be open to all-comers throughout the day, with members of the Friends on duty to meet and greet. There will be static displays and information points, opportunities to talk to and question the Friends. We have also planned some Entertainments by local people, including a program of BUSKERS - they can be musicians, comedians, street statues, jugglers....the sessions will be 20 minutes each and will be listed on a board in front of the Church, ( just inside the Church if wet) in the style of the Covent Garden Market system in London. Participants should be16 years or over; must perform acoustically; may perform solo or in small groups; and may accept donations from the public if they wish! Anyone interested in taking part should contact: Heather Clayton, at heatherclayton6@gmail.com, or visit the Friends of St Peter’s website: www.stpeterssudbury.co.uk

The Boyan Ensemble of Kiev are doing their 21st UK Tour They will be at Long Melford Church on the 24th September at 7.30. Tickets are available from Diana Lodge - dianalodge@chessmail.co.uk or telephone 01787 469841. Compact Music in Sudbury also have tickets on a cash only basis.

A 7ft long model replicating a German Zeppelin airship which bombed a Suffolk town is now a centre piece attraction at a popular heritage centre. Model maker Ray Wright spent nearly 20 painstaking hours replicating the German Navy Zeppelin which dropped a string of bombs across Sudbury on 31 March, 1916, during the First World War. The event marks one of the darkest days in the town’s history with one of the bombs, which landed in the East Street area, killing five people. Thomas Ambrose, 50, and his wife Ellen, 37, died in the wreckage of their home at 25 East Street, as did their next door neighbour Ellen Wheeler, 64. Silk weaver John Smith, 50, died when he was caught in the blast crossing the road and Rifleman Robert Valentine Wilson, 42, was killed by flying glass at his army billet in Constitution Hill. It is believed the bombs were dropped on Ray Wright and Robin Drury the town when lights from local lime admiring the model Zeppelin kilns were mistaken for war munition in place factories. Mr Wright, 68, of Acton, was present to see his model Zeppelin - which is made entirely of paper, card and wood - hung from the ceiling of the Sudbury Heritage Centre last week. He said: “Making models is just a hobby of mine and I was really pleased with the outcome of the Zeppelin, so I contacted the heritage centre to see if they wanted to put it on display. I am quite proud to see it hanging from the ceiling; it looks quite dramatic.” The Zeppelin hangs directly above a display board telling the story of the war time bombing and is accompanied by a bomb dropped in the raid which was recovered from a river in the town. The bomb which hit East Street was also recovered and currently sits in the vaults of the town hall. The bomb is expected to be put on display in the near future. The addition of the Zeppelin and wartime display are the first steps in ambitious plans to extend the heritage centre. It is hoped that a room vacated by the tourist information centre will be used to extend the heritage centre allowing for further historic artefacts to go on display. Robin Drury, 64, facilitator for the Sudbury Museum Heritage Trust, said: “We are delighted to see the Zeppelin on show depicting an important event in the town’s history. This is the forerunner to the plans to extend the heritage centre, which is much needed. Sudbury has such a wonderful and diverse history and we really need a larger heritage centre to do the The wreckage of houses in East Street town justice and to attract following the bombing more visitors.”

Much needed cash boost for vital transport group A vital community transport service used by hundreds of pensioners, school children and people with disabilities has been boosted by a ÂŁ1,500 grant. Go START, which runs a range of wide reaching community transport services in and around the Sudbury area, has been handed the money by the Suffolk Community Foundation – an independent charity dedicated to helping local people and grassroots organisations across the county. Go START operates a door to door dial-a-ride, wheelchair accessible vehicles, educational shuttle runs and a minibus available to local community groups, which combined allow people to attend important medical appointments, go shopping, pay bills, attend events, enjoy social activities, visit loved ones and to attend educational facilities. Go START founder, John Phillips, said: “Go START makes a huge difference to the lives of so many people in the Sudbury area, allowing people to lead independent lives and in many cases avoid isolation, one of the biggest social issues facing rural England today. “However, like many grassroots organisations we are run on a very tight budget and we rely on support from the general public, local businesses and grant-giving organisations. We are very grateful to the Suffolk Community Foundation for giving us this money, it is a huge boost for us and the money will be put to good use supporting local people and various local organisation and community groups. This money will mainly be used to reimburse travel expenses for our volunteer drivers, who are vitally important as without the drivers we simply couldn’t function.â€? Mandy Aziz, Operations Director, for the Suffolk Community Foundation, said: “we are very pleased to support Go START with a grant from the Transforming Suffolk Fund to enable this vital service to continue in and around the Sudbury area.â€? Those needing more information about the outings being offered by Go START should telephone 01787 242116 or visit the website on www.gostart.org.uk Further information on the Suffolk Community Foundation can be found at www.suffolkcf.org.uk

Bildeston’s French Celebration! With our seemingly endless days of sunshine being a reminder of Provencale summers, Cathy Bullen proprietor of Bildeston’s stylish French store The Boule-in - continues to celebrate in French fashion with her forthcoming Exhibition: “Every autumn our village held a ‘Fete du Coing’ which was a celebration of the Quince harvest” says Cathy, who lived with her family in Provence for several years before returning home to Bildeston and setting up The Boule-in 2 years ago. The Boule-in, whose own ‘Fete du Coing’ runs from Saturday September 28th until Sunday 6th October, exhibits it’s stylish collection of French home and gardenware within it’s charming barn and garden. “I think it’s so much more enjoyable to see individual pieces in a ‘real’ setting “ says Cathy, whose pretty garden is creatively filled with French furniture and pieces from the shop “it makes it so much easier to picture how things can look” she adds “ I’m always getting ideas and inspiration for my own home when we visit France!” The newly planted quince tree won’t be bearing fruit this autumn but hopefully will next year – and with a bit of luck it will blossom during one of the Exhibition weeks next Spring too! The brand new look of Bychoice After many years of offering high standards of customer care along with the latest techniques in selling and letting, Bychoice Estate Agents have once again raised the bar in offering innovative marketing tools whilst carrying out a comprehensive rebrand, all with the sole intention of selling and letting more homes for their clients. Since opening some years ago, Bychoice were the first in the area to introduce floorplans to their property particulars as standard, something that has proved invaluable in the sale of property. Following on from there, Bychoice then offered their unique monthly magazine, available from local supermarkets and newsagents as well as thousands delivered monthly through your door. To continue this success and their position as market leaders comes the launch of the all new website, www.bychoice.co.uk. A bespoke website specifically designed with buying and letting in mind. Easy to use and optimised for all platforms including, pc, tablet, smartphone, and even widescreen televisions. Updated search facilities including draw a search options as well as allowing clients to shortlist there preferred properties. Richard Gosling, Director of Bychoice Estate Agents and member of the National Association of Estate Agents and the Association of Residential Letting Agents spoke of his excitement. “After almost a year in the making, the website and brand looks fantastic. Having spoken to a number of buyers and tenants in the research stage, it became clear that many clients who use agents websites, found them difficult to navigate, and even harder to use on laptops, tablets and phones. We listened to all the comments and believe we have developed something truly unique. Having worked with some of the best marketing experts in the business we are proud of our achievements and that’s this, along with the new bychoice TV channel will prove invaluable.” Innovative estate agency service launch! Bychoice has launched their new online TV service, which gives every property in their portfolio the chance to shine with a high quality animated walk-through video. This innovative method of property marketing is proven to be 48% more effective than traditional advertising methods, and will allow Bychoice to grow their portfolio and become a force to be reckoned with in West Suffolk. Giving their customers access to market leading services will additionally allow Bychoice the opportunity to continue their ongoing dedication to finding great new ways to buy, sell, rent and let property. Every property that Bychoice is instructed to sell or let will be transformed into a professionally produced and animated video walk-through with backing music, and will be streamed to their online TV channel www.bychoice.tv. Online video walkthroughs allow potential buyers to view new homes without having to step outside their front door; using their laptops, tablets, and smartphones, wherever and whenever they want. This innovative way of marketing is particularly popular because it enables the seller or landlord to display particular features of the property, which may not always be easy with more traditional methods of marketing, such as newspaper advertising. With their new online TV channel strengthening their already impressive array of marketing tools, their exceptional local knowledge, and their excellent range of services, Bychoice are looking to enhance their position as a market leading agent well into the future. To hear more about these unique services and to book a free no obligation market appraisal of your home, call the Sudbury Office now on 01787 46800.

Kelly Mires Head Coach of Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics club, was expecting a busy day on June 1st for the opening of the club. But she certainly could not have envisaged the massive demand for places. The opening day was a resounding success said Kelly with over a hundred children from 4 years upwards registering for places. The club has quickly established as a superb fun filled atmosphere for the children to learn this demanding sport. The club offer a five piece rotation on Bars. Beam, Floor, Vault and Trampette. There are highly skilled coaches with over forty years experience, as well as younger members of the coaching team who are learning there craft. The feedback from our parents has been excellent and it is wonderful to see so many children in our new purple club leotards looking very smart and enjoying the exercise with great enthusiasm every Saturday Morning. It's so important in this day and age says Kelly to get your children moving, they cannot play out like they used to so our club offers a wonderful way for the children to get fit and learn a fantastic. Sport. We received a very kind and much appreciated donation from Hadleigh Thrift Shop and with some additional fund raising over the summer we are hoping to be able to buy some new specialist equipment, which we really need for our children to develop within the sport. We intend to run holiday clubs starting at the beginning of 2014. More details to follow on this. Due to the high demand for places we have expanded and added extra classes starting September from 5pm to 6pm and 6pm to 7pm. We have one or two openings in the Saturday Morning session so if you would like to reserve place please call me. If you want to know more about our club then please check us out on the website hadleighstarsgymnastics.co.uk. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Shush!! I’m typing this quietly because I’m Bob; no, well, Ebony is on shutdown and I don’t want to wake him up as I’ve decided to high jack his Blog this month. I’m one of the hairy hoofed ones he keeps writing about, so this time it is from the horse’s mouth! I just wanted to mention that The Hadleigh Wives Group came up the other week to look around and renew their sponsorship of Rocky: I think they enjoyed the visit and we enjoyed seeing them; some of them even got to have a ride on Ebony. That of course leads me easily onto the subject of Sponsorship. You, or any of your family or friends can sponsor one of us and it only costs £25 for the year. For this you get a photo of whichever one of us you choose and your name will join other sponsors shown, framed, outside the stable door. We like it because it makes it personal between you and us, and we’re happy to see you if you want to visit and have your photo taken with us by way of thanking you for helping The Centre. Details are available from The Centre but, if you go to our Website and look under Fund Raising you can download a Sponsorship Form and send off direct to Diane Godfrey who is in charge of this sort of thing: we’re got our photos on the site too (Although as a new boy I’m not there yet but, I’m quite a looker, even if I say it myself). Anyway, I look forward to welcoming you to our growing Sponsor a Pony Club; for those of you at School why not make it a project on the life of an RDA Pony? We also held our AGM recently and I’m pleased to tell you that one of our Instructors, Jan McKillop, was presented with The Shelley Centre ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award Certificate by the other Jan, our Chairman. Jan McK works very hard for us and if you are on the Monday or Friday p.m. shift, do expect to be offered delicious home made cake; she’s our very own version of ‘The Great British Bake Off’ as seen on TV. Oh! Oh! The lights are flashing so Ebony must be powering up so I’d better vanish pronto but, before I do, don’t forget, Term starts on 9th September! Sudbury Mayor’s Report Hello to you all, I am pleased to report that it has been another busy month. It never ceases to amaze me of the dedication and hard work of so many people in our community. We are all so lucky to live in and be part of Sudbury. Following on from the visit to Sudbury by the Anglia in Bloom judges it is great to see the town continuing to look so nice. It is important that our Town looks clean and tidy and I hope that it continues to look as nice for many months to come. I understand that the results will be known in September. Fingers crossed for gold. There have recently been a few problems with noise and anti social behaviour by a small majority of people in the Kingfisher Car Park. Both myself and the Town Council have been in contact with the Sudbury Police and Babergh to come up with a long term solution and I am confident that by all working together we will find an answer. As I mentioned in my last article I continue to make impromptu visits to our various organisations and charities to give you all the opportunity to talk to me about your concerns as well as what you feel is good about Sudbury. Please contact the Town Hall if you would like me to visit your organisation. Also I am holding a ‘Come and Meet the Mayor’ morning on the 7th September at the Town Hall from 10.00 until 11.30. Please come and see me for a chat. On the 18th July Jan and I was honoured to attend the University of Essex Graduation Ceremony. How enlightening and encouraging it was to see so many young people graduating and starting out on what I really hope will be successful and happy futures. I would also like to thank Lord Andrew Phillips for his kindness and hospitality during our visit. It is always a pleasure to see new shops opening up in Sudbury and I was pleased to be part of the opening ceremony for Munch-Moi.and I wish them all the very best for the future. In July the Council held yet another very successful Party in the Park. Again the weather was very kind to us and everyone had a lovely family time. Many thanks to the officers, councillors and volunteers who helped to make the event such a success. On the 31st July I unveiled a new sign at the Cricket Club to celebrate the sharing of the Club House between the Cricket Club and the Hockey Club. A most enjoyable day as it was also Sudbury’s Cricket Week.

It is always very encouraging to see young people aspiring to achieve success and I was very fortunate to be invited to an exhibition of art by Kerr McIlwraith. This young man has got a great deal of talent and I wish him every success for the future. You have all read in the local press about the success of the Annual Rowing Club Regatta. It was great to be part of this success and both Jan and myself had a lovely day sitting by the river watching the races and later presenting the prizes. Well done to all involved.

On the 10th August I had the pleasure of attending the Catchpole Summer Fete. The weather was kind to us and I extend a big thank you to the staff, residents, friends and families in helping to make the event a success. Also on the 10th August I was honoured to open the new Exploring U Counselling Centre for Well Being. This centre will provide a valuable service in Sudbury to those who need help and support through difficult and challenging times, as well as providing training to new and existing therapists. I wish them all the very best.. On the 13th August I was invited to attend AFC to meet a group of young people who are off to visit Hoxter, one of our Twin Towns. To involve Sudbury, as well as to celebrate the Olympics, last year guests from our twin towns were invited to Sudbury to participate in a weekend of sport. The aim was to inspire a legacy from the Olympics as well as providing an opportunity for our young people to develop links and friendships with our friends from abroad, this helping us to sustain and strengthen our association with out Twin Towns into the future. Hoxter has extended a warm welcome to children and adults from Sudbury to return the visit and a plaque will be presented to Hoxter to thank them for their kindness and support. A true and robust demonstration that our aspiration of 2012 has been achieved. I also attended the unveiling of the Talbot Trail Mural. This has been funded and sited at the Sudbury Ipswich Building Society and is well worth a visit. It is hoped that it will make more people aware of the Trail and encourage more visitors to Sudbury. Always a good thing. Many thanks and well done to the Ipswich Building Society, Rbins Drury and Rob Pewsey. I will close now but look forward to seeing you all. Adrian

Society unveils new Talbot Trail Mural in Sudbury celebrating History and Heritage

L-R: Jan Osborne (Sudbury Mayoress) Adrian Osborne (Sudbury Mayor), Michelle Monck (General Manager Marketing, Ipswich Building Society), Robin Drury (mural creator) and Lesley Ford-Platt (Sudbury Market Town Partnership) celebrate the unveiling of the mural. Ipswich Building Society is celebrating the history and heritage of Sudbury with a mural depicting the Talbot Trail in their Sudbury branch, located on Market Hill. The Talbot Trail is a circular walk of 14 bronze sculptures presenting a light-hearted look at the history of the ancient market town with stories of events and characters through the ages. The mural was officially unveiled on Saturday 17 August by Michelle Monck, General Manager (Marketing) of Ipswich Building Society, Town Mayor of Sudbury Adrian Osborne and mural creator Robin Drury, Michelle Monck, General Manager (Marketing), Ipswich Building Society said: “I am delighted that we are bringing the history of Sudbury to life through the Talbot Trail mural, which provides an intriguing look at the market town. The Talbot Trail itself is a fascinating way to absorb the stories and scenes of development in Sudbury.” Adrian Osborne, Mayor of Sudbury, commented “The Talbot Trail was first launched six years ago, with each point of the Trail representing a particular, sometimes quirky, snippet of Sudbury's history. The Trail has proved popular but in recent years it has needed to be better promoted. We are very grateful that Ipswich Building Society has invested in and made space to accommodate this magnificent mural and map of the Trail, and encourage people to come and view it”. The Society is selling the accompanying Talbot Trail map guides for 50p with all proceeds going to the Sudbury Market Town Partnership

Town council launches incentive to breathe new life into market Trade on the Saturday market in Sudbury hasn’t been as buoyant as usual in recent months and the town council has taken a decision to try and boost its offerings. As part of the scheme current traders are being offered discounts on their pitch if they introduce a new trader. Discounts are also being offered to new traders who would like a ‘trial’ period at the market. The council is also bidding to improve the market’s diversity by inviting individuals and groups set up displays and exhibits, where they can sell items they have made or produced. Town clerk, Sue Brotherwood, said: “We have a market twice a week here in Sudbury, and whilst the Thursday is still vibrant we do need to attract more stalls on a Saturday and that is why we have launched this initiative. “We would like to introduce several new traders offering a diverse range of items and produce. As well as commercial traders we would like to see individuals, groups and organisations take up a market stall. For example a local artist could have a stall to sell their work,We are happy for these people to come as a one off, or on a monthly basis, but we hope in the long run they would benefit from signing up as a regular trader. Many start-up businesses have been set up locally in recent times and maybe some of them could look to trade from a market stall, which would be much more cost effective than paying for a shop or commercial premises.” Anyone needing further information on the market initiative should call Sudbury Town Council on 01787 372331. Those needing general information about Sudbury Town Council can email advice@sudburytowncouncil.co.uk or visit the website at www.sudburytowncouncil.co.uk

Chernobyl Childrens Life Line On the evening of Friday August 2nd August we held our leaving party for the children, Hosts and Supporters at the Cedars hotel in Stowmarket. The children performed a concert for which they had been practising hard and then went on to enjoy a disco especially geared towards them. Everyone who attended had a great time and Sunday 4th August saw the return to Belarus of the 20 children who had been staying with families in the local areas for the last four weeks. Although a few tears were shed at departure the children were soon cheerfully looking forward to being reunited with their families once more and sharing the many happy memories they take with them. Not only must we thank our Host families for their work in this project but also the many people who support us throughout the year, raising funds to enable us to bring the children and providing sponsored outings and events for them whilst they are here, giving their time free of charge, providing valuable dental and optical services free of charge, collecting clothing, donating medicines to take home and many other items which all benefit either these children or those at home in Belarus. Unfortunately the children still suffer with the same terrible dental problems caused by their poor diet and living conditions, this year saw a total of 39 extractions and 28 fillings within the group and all carried out on the same day! Our special thanks must go to all of our Sponsors and Supporters, many of whom I have never met but who continue to help us in the background year on year, it seems like only yesterday we started this group but it has now been six years with over 150 children having been brought to the Mid Suffolk area for recuperation health breaks. So many local people have contributed to our cause and supported us in many ways with donations and gifts for the children and via our Charity Shop. It is not possible to mention everyone here but without you the children would not have had the wonderful time they have had, this is appreciated more than you will know. We are now actively seeking new Host Families for the 2014 visit, whilst this might seem quite early we do have to place the invitation just after Christmas hence the need to start preparations now. If you think you could give a home to a child/children for 4 weeks from 6th July 2014 to 3rd August we would love to hear from you. The minimum requirement is a mattress on the floor for sleeping and a loving home. Anyone may apply to Host, age and circumstances are no barrier. All the children meet during working hours Monday to Friday at our Centre in Needham Market and there are always plenty of volunteers to help outside these hours meaning that working families and people with other commitments are able to Host. If you would like to help in any way at all, either Hosting a child in 2014 or contributing something, no matter how small, to the items we are collecting or helping in our Charity shop, please do get in touch. With many thanks as always to all of you, Elizabeth Parker Link Chair 01449 760343 07771 550868 www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk

Double Awards Success For Stoke By Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa

JP’s Utilities Ltd ALL ASPECTS OF TREE SURGERY

Family directors and senior Managers from Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, and sister company Peake Fruit celebrate their two award wins. Champagne corks are popping today at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa after being crowned the winners of a prestigious family business award. Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is part of a family business dating back seven decades, which also includes fruit farming and juice making – and truly has family at its core. In fact, the first generation of the business, Bill and Devora Peake, created Copella farm-pressed English apple juice in their farmhouse kitchen in 1969, which was sold to Tropicana UK in 1997. The hotel scooped the award at the East Anglian Daily Times Business Awards, where they were also winners of the Business Broadband Initiative Award, and runners up of Business of the Year. Judges were impressed with the family’s ethics, which are evident in the Family Business Constitution and a robust succession plan, as well as a book of family values. They also stage regular family council meetings ensuring that future generations are included in discussions about the business. Susanna Rendall, Managing Director of Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, said: “We are delighted to win this award and be recognised as a flourishing family business. This achievement means so much not only to the family but also to all of our staff in our three companies who we consider to be part of our extended family. We have all worked hard to build on the success of the business and we have a high proportion of guests who return to enjoy the fruits of our investment into the development of top quality facilities as well as staff training. The original Golf Club has been transformed into a luxury retreat and internationally acclaimed golf resort which our parents would have been proud of, and it sets a course for future generations. As a 2nd and 3rd generation company we are so pleased that the entrepreneurialism, vision and hard work of our parents, our staff and ourselves have been recognised in this way. “It has been a double celebration with also winning the Business Broadband Initiative Award, which recognises that we have invested in technology – taking our broadband speeds up to 20Mbbs - and that we fully understand that high-speed broadband is crucial to us as a rural business.” The 80-bedroom four-star hotel, which is also celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year since the original Golf Club was created, includes a two AA rosette restaurant, spa and fitness club, two championship golf courses with a clubhouse and shop and an extensive conference and banqueting centre. The resort also includes luxury country lodges, all set in 300 acres of stunning Constable Country.

Higher earners urged to register for self assessment to avoid Child Benefit penalty Parents on higher incomes are being reminded to register for self assessment by 5 October if they wish to continue receiving Child Benefit. Earlier this year, HMRC introduced a new High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) in a bid to claw back the benefit from individuals with incomes in excess of £50,000. Under the changes, where a person in receipt of Child Benefit or his or her partner has adjusted net income of between £50,000 and £60,000, the HICBC is levied at 1% of the benefit for every £100 by which income exceeds £50,000. Once adjusted net income reaches £60,000 the charge is equal to the full amount of Child Benefit received for the tax year. Where it is certain that the charge will bite, claimants can elect not to receive their Child Benefit More than 390,000 parents with higher incomes have already opted out of receiving Child Benefit following the introduction of the HICBC. Those who did so before 7 January 2013 do not need to take any further action. However, parents on higher incomes who continued to receive Child Benefit in 2012/13 will need to register for self assessment by 5 October 2013 (unless they have already done so) and complete a tax return. Individuals who fail to register with HMRC may incur a penalty. HMRC is now writing to around two million higher rate taxpayers who it believes are affected by the new rules. For more information on the changes to child benefit, and for advice tailored to you and your family, please do not hesitate to contact us 90% of employees staying in auto-enrolment pension scheme, says DWP Nine out of ten employees automatically enrolled into a workplace pension are choosing to remain in the scheme, latest figures suggest. After gathering data from the country’s 50 largest employers, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has revealed that the average auto-enrolment opt-out rate is just 10%. The Government had predicted that around 25% of individuals automatically enrolled into a pension would choose to leave the scheme. While experts have welcomed the news, many say that a ‘pensions crunch’ will come when more than 29,000 medium-sized firms begin auto-enrolment in early 2014. Pension auto-enrolment began last October and is being phased in over a number years, starting with the largest employers. Each employer will be allocated a ‘staging date’ from when their duties will begin. The staging date is based on the number of people in the employer’s PAYE scheme. Employers with 120,000 or more personnel in their PAYE scheme were required to begin enrolling staff from 1 October 2012. By February 2014 all employers with 250 or more staff will be within the scheme’s scope. Meanwhile, businesses with 50-249 staff will have a staging date between April 2014 and April 2015, and firms with fewer than 50 workers will commence auto-enrolment between June 2015 and April 2017. Last month the Pensions Regulator revealed that more than one million people have now been automatically enrolled into a workplace pension. Premium Bond prize pay-outs set to fall The odds of winning a Premium Bond prize fell from 1 August, the Government-backed savings body will reduce the annual Premium Bond prize fund rate from 1.5% to 1.3% from the start of next month. Following the change, the chances of each £1 Premium Bond number winning a prize each month will fall from one in 24,000 to one in 26,000. Prize wins will still range from £25 to £1 million but the total value of monthly pay-outs will drop from £57m to £49m. NS&I claimed that Premium Bonds had become ‘too attractive’ in a climate of falling savings rates from banks and building societies. The move is likely to disappoint the 22 million investors who currently hold Premium Bonds. ‘Rates across the savings market have fallen over recent months, resulting in NS&I savings being increasingly attractive,’ explained Jane Platt, NS&I chief executive. ‘In light of our framework to balance the needs of our savers, taxpayers and the stability of the broader financial services sector, we now need to reduce the Premium Bond prize fund rate’. Long Melford Parish Report Councillor Richard Kemp Tresco, New Road, Long Melford, Suffolk CO10 9JY 01787 378149 richard.kemp@suffolk.gov.uk

Views welcomed on A14 Bridge proposals An Exhibition in Bury St Edmunds will allow people to put forward their views on a new £2m pedestrian and cycle bridge over the A14. The new bridge will provide a safe and direct route for cyclists and pedestrians to cross over the A14, whilst creating a useful link between the town centre to the south and railway station to the residential and commercial areas in the north of the town. It will be financed by both Suffolk County Council and the Department for Transport, who have provided the majority of funding. Currently, the main route for cars to cross under the A14 is Fornham Road however, this road is not suitable for cycling and the options for improving it are limited by the narrow road width and requirements for residential parking. Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for roads and transport said:”Bury St Edmunds has some excellent existing cycling facilities that will be complemented by the new bridge. We are hopeful that the introduction of a new bridge will make walking and cycling safer, more convenient and pleasurable and will encourage more people to leave their cars at home when making shorter journeys around the town.” In parallel with this project Suffolk County Council is carrying out cycling improvement schemes on Tayfen Road, Northgate Avenue and Tollgate Lane to enhance the links from existing cycling facilities to the new bridge. Suffolk celebrates 50th No Cold Calling zone OVER 2,500 households are now united in saying ‘no’ to uninvited doorstep callers as Suffolk celebrates its 50th No Cold Calling Zone (NCCZ). Local residents, county councillors, Suffolk Trading Standards and Suffolk Constabulary gathered today in Newmarket to celebrate the launch of two new NCCZs, one zone in Manderston Road and Princess Way and the second in Adastral Close, bringing the total to 50 across the county. NCCZs consist of a road or small group of roads where residents have decided that they do not want uninvited salespeople knocking on their doors. The zone’s are clearly identified by street signage and stickers on householder’s doors, in an attempt to empower consumers to say ‘no’ to cold calling doorstep traders and stay safe in their homes. The first ever Suffolk NCCZ was launched in April of 2009 in the area of Maryon Road and Grassmere Close in Ipswich. Since then, residents living in NCCZs have been asked about about their experiences. The most recent survey saw that 92% said they felt as confident or more confident now they lived in a NCCZ, 96% said they received no or significantly fewer visits from cold callers and 98% said they felt safer or as safe. A resident from Stowmarket, who has benefited from the NCCZ that was launched in his road back in September 2010, said: “I would like to thank Suffolk Trading Standards and the Police for introducing this scheme; it has made a great improvement to my life. Aged 81 I no longer have to deal with aggressive callers at my door.” Suffolk communities, Neighbourhood Watch coordinators and Safer Neighbourhood teams who are concerned about crime and doorstop callers are invited to nominate roads for a NCCZ by contacting Suffolk Trading Standards. Officers will then conduct a proportionality check of the area to ascertain if a scheme is a proportionate measure. Zones are then set up free of charge to the residents through Trading Standards funding. Trading Standards is supported with the use of Consumer Protection legislation which means that if doorstep cold calling is carried out in a zone by a trader or company, it may be a criminal offence. Councillor Colin Spence, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for public protection said; “Following the launch of Suffolk’s first NCCZ in 2009, we have steadily increased the number of zones in partnership with local communities and the local police to reach the milestone 50th NCCZ today. “Community safety issues that include the support and funding of NCCZ are very high on the priority list and we look forward to growing the partnerships that develop within Suffolk No Cold Calling Zones and empowering the local people living within them.” Lee Nunn, Suffolk’s lead officer for NCCZs said; “These zones work very effectively with the support of the residents living within them. When local partnerships unite and act together, prompt action can be taken and huge differences can be made.” Anyone interested in knowing more about NCCZs, including the nomination of a road, can visit Suffolk Trading Standards website pages via www.suffolk.gov.uk or call directly on 01473 264859. Locality Budget & Small Roadworks Budget The locality budget has been increased this year to £12,000 for the Melford Division. The amount is to cover nine parishes, with an electorate of circa 7600 people and total population of just under 10,000 people, applicable to both budgets. Already there has been take-up on both budgets. Preference for applications is given to Charities that operate within the Melford Division.

Suffolk’s Fire Chief Leaving County Suffolk County Council’s director of public protection and chief fire officer, Andy Fry, is to leave the authority in the autumn to take up a new role in Royal Berkshire. Andy has served the people of Suffolk as head of the county’s fire and rescue service for four and a half years, but is moving on to become chief fire officer for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Paying tribute to Andy’s considerable contribution to Suffolk, Councillor Colin Spence, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for public protection, said: “Andy’s commitment to serving the public of Suffolk and striving for improvement in the services has been outstanding, and his enthusiasm and drive for maximising opportunities for collaboration will be greatly missed. “He has provided me with an exceptional level of support in my role as cabinet member and is always a consummate professional. Andy has been a fantastic colleague to work with and I have very appreciated his support and advice in delivering services to the people of Suffolk.” Speaking about his time in Suffolk, Andy Fry said: “It has been a great pleasure and an enormous privilege to serve the people of Suffolk in the role of director of public protection and chief fire officer at Suffolk County Council. It has enabled me to work with some of the most committed and talented people in the public sector. I really value the professional relationships and friendships I have developed as a result, and will miss colleagues very much indeed when I leave Suffolk later this year. During my five and a half years here, I have been proud to be part of a successful organisation, working with my corporate management team colleagues to deliver real change for the benefit of Suffolk residents. My contribution at a corporate level has been made infinitely easier through having an utterly brilliant heads of service team in the Directorate. The support I have enjoyed from Andy Osman, Mark Hardingham, Steve Greenfield and, latterly, Sonia Whitely has been invaluable and I can not thank them enough for it. Finally I would like to say a special thank you to Councillor Colin Spence. As cabinet member for public protection,, I have found his unstinting focus on doing the very best for people in Suffolk really inspiring, and believe that an awful lot has been achieved as a result of his political leadership. It is with a heavy heart that I will leave Suffolk in the Autumn, but the fresh challenges ahead present some great opportunities for me.” A decision on what arrangements will be put in place following Andy’s departure is still to be made. Deborah Cadman, Suffolk County Council’s chief executive, said: I would like to thank Andy personally and on behalf of elected members, the corporate management team and staff across the public protection directorate for his tremendous hard work and commitment over the last few years. Andy will be a real loss to the organisation. During his four years as Suffolk’s chief fire officer, he has ensured that Suffolk remains one of the most efficient fire services in the country. He has also led an award winning service trading standards team, and his endeavours in developing relationships with the voluntary sector are also held as leading on the national stage. Andy has been outstanding in his leadership and most importantly delivery of change and innovation. We wish Andy every success for his future.”

Long Melford Historical and Archeological Society At our next meeting the speaker is Clive Paine and the talk will be 'Problem children in the Victorian period'. Clive will describe the formation of the Kerridon Reformatory at Thorndon, Suffolk inspired by the work of Mary Carpenter in 1851 and other attempts to help disadvantaged children. The meeting is being held at the Old School in Long Melford at 7.30pm on Thursday September 19th. Visitors are most welcome. Contact can be made with Caroline Brown 01787 379934

Our Inns.. By licensee Peter Thorogood, Past Chairman of the LVA, co-founder of Pubwatch, past Fellow of the British Institute of Innkeeping and proprietor in over 30 years of some thirteen pubs, hotels and Inns. “From the towns all Inns have been driven, from the villages most. Change your hearts or you will lose your Inns and you will have deserve to have lost them. But when you have lost your Inns drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England”. These prophetic words were written by French born Hilaire Belloc in 1912 and sadly history has proved him right. In the late 1980’s I was chairman of the Sudbury and Haverhill Licensed Victuallers Association. Not all pubs were affiliated but we had in excess of some eighty members. Today at least a third have closed. The reasons are numerous. Society no longer sees fit to take part in pub team sports. From darts, snooker, bar billiards, crib etc. fewer and fewer pubs host such teams. In 1987 the Long Melford pool league boasted three divisions with over twenty four sides representing some eighteen village hostelries. The cost of beer has risen (particularly duty) above inflation. Pub rents when I joined the trade were set just above council house rents with the strict proviso that all liquor was purchased from the brewery. This we found acceptable, with sensible rents both landlord and brewer could make a living. But pub companies and brewers grew increasingly greedy and as good tenants could no longer achieve both a decent return on their own investment and above all a decent living in return for the excessive hours worked the calibre of those entering our trade declined. Until recent times the profession of Innkeeper was well respected in the community. Many magistrates, councillors and other local worthies were of the trade. We completed passport applications, held LVA and charity events, and were expected to be of good conduct, whilst the police and local bench ensured we kept order in our premises. I was expected by my elder peers and customers to be smartly turned out and above all else, available. We were not perfect but we did our best and were respected. To gain that highly valued premises licence one’s background was checked by the local police and you were first interviewed by a senior officer. Then it was up to the magistrates as to whether you got that pub, incidentally for which there would be at least a dozen applicants. With declining trade, excessive rents and business rates, the utility companies

(in which I include Sky TV with their monthly fees running into hundreds) those professionals of the 1980’s would never make a living, even if the population still frequented their premises as they did. This is not to criticise those who today valiantly strive to keep their pubs open. But what incentive do they have to borrow and invest, as in any other businesses, when so little return is achieved for the hours put in. But it is we, the British, who have deserted our Inns in droves. Pubs today are cleaner, smoke free, offering food and live entertainment and offer a far safer environment than in my day. So why are the British no longer supporting their Inns? With a wide choice of takeaways, supermarkets peddling wine and beers at prices cheaper than the innkeeper can purchase from his brewery, and multichannel home entertainment where is the incentive to pop to the Local? A Recent History of our Locals “There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good Tavern or Inn”. Samuel Johnson As stated the decline of the traditional Inn can not be placed with the brewers alone, but they certainly haven’t helped. Although today boasting record profits little thought is given to keeping pubs open, profitable, or above all, an integral part of our communities. For example, in November 1985 I was extremely fortunate to be granted the tenancy of Long Melford’s George and Dragon. Even though it was in a poor state of both repair and reputation there were many other applicants. The ingoing (for inventory etc.) was about £12,000 and the weekly rent the princely sum of £90. We were tied for drink purchases and the building was virtually uninhabitable. However, with good investment and hard work our family soon owned a thriving business. Our trade was based on barrelage turnover, a composite barrelage being 36 gallons of beer, wine and spirits and we and the neighbouring Swan (under the brilliant management of Fred and Doreen Bright) were achieving over 600 barrels a year. Although high, this was not unusual. Sudbury’s Ship and Star, Angel, Easterns and Anchor were realising similar turnover. Today only the massive managed houses, Wetherspoons, Silk Worm etc. can equal such consumption. As well as a sympathetic rent, after all the brewery was ecstatic with our purchasing, and our business rates of under £2000 per annum and utility costs were sensible. Therefore we, and other landlords, felt secure enough to borrow and invest. Now forward to 2013. Pubs such as the George and Dragon, now on 50% of the turnover we enjoyed, are annually rented at over £70,000, business rates in the region of £50,000, and utility bills likewise. Most of such Inns are still tied to those same brewers for the purchase of beers at terms in-equable with those negotiated with supermarkets, Wetherspoons and the like. So what incentive has the truly independent publican, the like of which has played mine host for generations, to invest and develop our Inns for us and future generations? But pubs do not close just because of rapacious brewers and councils. Look about you. Sudbury alone has lost the Pied Cow, Rising Sun, Spread Eagle, Plough, Ship and Star, Anchor, Christopher, Boat House and others in the last 30 years alone. Long Melford the Scutchers and White Hart. Other villagers have been similarly affected, some left with no local at all. How empty those communities must be. Some years ago I was faced with the terrible position of attempting to de-license a pub, we were losing some £30,000 a year due to lack of trade. I was accosted by an angry villager “What right do you have to close our only pub. It will knock ten grand off the value of my property?” The man, when I asked him why he had not once patronised his local in five years replied “Well, I’m not a pub person!” Our pubs today may not be that haven of fireside entertainment and atmosphere they once were. In my father’s time people went to the pub for reasons far different to today. In a council house or tenanted cottage with bare floors, little insulation and only expensive coal for heating it was a good place to be warm. Companionship and conversation was guaranteed, either with your neighbour, host, or a barmaid who feigned interest and spoke the same language as you. With no television Sudbury’s Bear Hotel used to advertise “Live from the Albert Hall, Saturday’s concert on our saloon bar radio”. Darts, crib and dominoes, with travel to neighbouring pubs for matches kept all amused. The annual coach trip, organised by the landlord to Yarmouth or Southend. Simple enough pleasures of a more innocent age. The two hour sojourn of a Sunday lunchtime when by a few minutes after twelve every pub in the land would be packed, for just two hours, whilst landlords vied to put the best spread on the bar. The five o’clock club where locals met up from their various workplaces to down a couple of pints before supper and discuss the events of the day, now virtually a thing of the past thanks to our drink driving laws. Is it to late to save our remaining Inns and save that jewel in Britain’s crown for future generations? Perhaps not, all it needs is for us, the one nation identifiable with that unique culture, to again patronise those taverns and inns as our forefathers did before us. But our licensed premises must again be welcoming with independent landlords and landladies secure to invest as they think fit, not by some brewery accountant with no knowledge or sympathy with the town or premises involved. All is not lost if the willpower is there to retain the soul of England. Survival “If Die I Must, Let Me Die Drinking in an Inn” Walter Map Let me conclude by stating that our pubs and Inns can, and must, survive. They are part of us. They are a unique part of our culture. Together with the Royal Family, our splendid cathedrals and monuments, the mother of parliaments, our

tolerance and love of fair play, the world’s greatest literature and for many the genuine desire to leave our country a better place than when we were so fortunate to be born of it. If our great palaces, castles and churches were to fall into decay and disappear there would be a national outcry. So must it be for our Inns. This great British national treasure is far too important to be left to the grasping care of brewers and property companies. The Beer Orders legislation passed under Thatcher’s regime must be rescinded. The idea that brewers were all too powerful was right, but the answer in transferring those pubs to property companies has been disastrous. Let us revert to fair tenancies, with brewers again owning and supplying their pubs which could be let at equable rents to responsible innkeepers prepared to invest as an equal partner. Proper and above all professional training for all potential licensees and staff. When I first visited Ireland in the early 1980s I was amazed at the sheer professionalism of bar service. I then discovered that all received a four year apprenticeship, were unionised, received excellent wages and above all were proud of their trade. Local authorities could play their part by offering a short holiday from business rates whilst an Inn becomes established (why not for shops as well?) Landlords must also become professionals offering a range of choice. For example why do Sudbury pubs while presenting live music share the same loud local bands who seem to play on a rota system around town. A rather boring music scene with little or no acoustic blues, folk, jazz or even country. Landlords must offer variety, in beers, wines, food and entertainment to entice us back into their pubs. But above all, ask yourself, when did you last support your local? Just one visit a week could mean the difference between closure or survival of your village pub or town Inn. Its not brewers or publicans that close pubs, it is we, the customers who are now staying away in droves. Give that poor guy behind the bar a chance, after all you could be helping to preserve the jewel in Britain’s Crown, our Inns. Peter Thorogood, August 2013

We’re Fairtrade at last! Are you good at "spot the difference"? If so, you may well have seen the “Welcome to Sudbury” signs by the roads leading into Sudbury, but what's different about them? The words "We are a Fairtrade Town" have been added to each sign! On April 3rd 2013, the Fairtrade Foundation officially declared Sudbury a Fairtrade Town, the culmination of four years of hard work by the local Fairtrade Group and Sudbury Town Council. Now we need to build on our achievement and expand the awareness, purchase and use of Fairtrade products across the town. Look at our website www.sudburyfairtrade.org.uk and if you would like to help us to tackle world poverty through Fairtrade, please call John and Ann Boardman on 01787 372738. Our group has both Christian and non-Christian members, with Christian members taking inspiration from Jesus’ own concern for the poor - as shown for example in Matthew 25:37-40. We went to Hyde Park recently to support the IF Campaign. The 'IF' movement challenges the Prime Minister to tackle 4 big IFs, to help there be enough food for everyone: IF we stop poor farmers being forced off their land, and use the available agricultural land to grow food for people, not biofuels for cars. IF governments keep their promises on aid, invest to stop children dying from malnutrition and help the poorest people feed themselves through investment in small farmers. IF governments close loopholes to stop big companies dodging tax in poor countries, so that millions of people can free themselves from hunger. IF we force governments and investors to be honest and open about the deals they make in the poorest countries that stop people getting enough food. We want our leaders to act on the four big issues that stop everyone getting enough food. Taking action on the 'corporation tax gap' by multinational companies alone would enable developing countries to raise enough revenue every day to save the lives of 230 children under five currently dying of malnutrition. Desmond Tutu supports Enough Food for Everyone IF, and said: "Hunger is not an incurable disease or an unavoidable tragedy. We can make sure no child goes to bed hungry. We can stop mothers from starving themselves to feed their families. We can save lives. We can do all of this, IF we are prepared to do something about it. IF we challenge our leaders to take action." Your support for Fairtrade, simply by changing one product you usually buy to a Fairtrade one, will help to bring about positive change in the world. The community where that product is grown will benefit from the fair prices paid, from price stability and from the premium. This premium can enable communities to collaboratively decide how their life can be improved. This might be through providing a water supply, a clinic, a school or bicycles for workers; many things we take for granted in Sudbury. Please support our Fairtrade campaign in Sudbury – a Fairtrade Town!

Teenager Lewis grabs the Salver One of the last finishers of the day, teenager Lewis Woodhead, leaped into the lead to take the Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver trophy at Newton Green Golf Club. The salver – the traditional Saturday highlight of the club’s golf week – attracted 118 entries, and 17-yearold Woodhead scored an impressive 44 Stableford points off a handicap of 11 – now cut to nine. It makes him yet another junior at Jonathan Lambert and Lewis Woodhead the club holding a single figure handicap, and his success came only a few weeks after his father Ian regained the club men’s championship crown. Woodhead junior nudged out Leighann Wordley, on 43 points, who had been the long-time leader in the club house. Gary Twyman came in with 41 points for the best man award. Golf week sponsor Jonathan Lambert presented the awards during the evening presentation party staged in a marquee recently acquired by the club The tent helped bring a new dimension to the week, with all four lunches staged under canvas for the four, mid-week morning events. The Saturday night also featured the Victory Jazz Band in the club house. Yet again, the festival attracted more than 500 entries over the five days, and with the course in immaculate condition, the festival again provided a fine showcase for the club. Results Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver: 44 Lewis Woodhead (salver winner), 43 Leighann Wordley (best lady), 41 Gary Twyman (best man). Others: 41 Carolyn Cocksedge, 40 Neil Jacobs, Rebecca Evans, Ben Uttridge, 39 John Matthews, Gavin Scott, Rosemany Jackson. Delaney Scramble: Sue Thurgate, Kate Fraser, Peter Cade, James Fraser. New Doors for Orchard Barn We are now the proud owners of 4 new doors built by our trainees. This has been a long process, which began soon after we started renovating the barn, with the purchase of oak from Willisham and ash from Bradfield Woods – wood which was of little commercial value and would probably have been used as firewood had we not given it a second life as doors. The oak and ash were milled in 2008, and the boards have been ‘air drying’ in the traditional way in our orchard ever since. The photo shows a pair of the finished doors, with our trainees and Rick Lewis their teacher, and you can see the Suffolk latch, also made by them from the oak. Another example of our use of locally sourced wood is the recently completed elm roof on the new tool shed (utilizing elm from our own orchard). Underneath the old pantiles we’ve laid a layer of wattle and daub - the wattle sticks having been hand cleft from coppiced hazel rods. For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to visit us at Orchard Barn, we are offering tours on 2 dates in September - 4pm on Thursday 12th and 2pm on Saturday 14th. These are part of the Green Suffolk Heritage Open Days. Please book your place with Jonas Grist (Suffolk County Council) on 01473 264832. http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/directory/orchard-barnenvironmental-education-centre We are continuing our Wednesday volunteer workdays, with occasional Saturdays, and September will be a lovely time to experience our site. If you are interested in doing practical work in a beautiful environment do get on touch, even if you have no previous experience. Contact Sarah at sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or 01473-658193/ 07766054042 More information on all events and courses can be found on our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Wattisham Blades Netball Club Wattisham Blades Netball Club was set up last May at Wattisham Station to bring together local ladies to play netball, have fun and make new friends. Our club has gone from strength to strength since being set up and we are now made up of members from both Wattisham Station and the local surrounding area. We have worked hard over the last year training, playing friendlies and just generally trying to gain skills and experience. Many of us had forgotten the skills required to play netball when the club was first set up, but due to the amount of new members that had not played for so long (if at all) we were able to obtain some “Back 2 Netball coaching from the England Netball Association. Since then we have been coached by Chloe and her assistant coaches Leanne and Fiona. We played in the West Suffolk Netball League over the spring/summer and are looking forward to joining the South Suffolk Netball League shortly. For those of us not involved in the league games, or who prefer to work on their skills and just play friendlies, training continues every Thursday in the gym. We constantly have new members coming in and have recently found ourselves in a position to set up another “Back 2 Netball team with coaching from Rachel Keeley of the England Netball Association. If anyone would like to come and join us but has been deterred at the thought of joining an already established team, don’t be! We have a wide range of fitness and skill levels on the team so our club is suitable for all abilities of players. We welcome new members whether they are experienced, new to netball, or just a little rusty. But, for those who are perhaps a little less confident about joining as a new player, the “Back 2 Netball sessions will provide the perfect opportunity to get back into the game. Our “Back 2 Netball sessions are due to start shortly and we would love to see some new faces. If you would be interested in joining us please contact us to book your space. You can contact us via; email at wattishamblades@gmail.com Our FaceBook Page (search Wattisham Blades Netball Club) Or contact our Club Secretary Fiona on 07769 212296 or Club Chairperson Chloe 07876 768043 We look forward to seeing you!

The Professional Golfers’ Association is increasing its support of the women’s game with the launch of a new tournament on the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS). This exciting development in women’s golf will see The WPGA International Challenge supported by Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa added to the LETAS schedule and played at the venue on September 26-28. The 54-hole tournament, which is the only event on the LETAS schedule to be played in the United Stoke by Nayland member Hannah Kingdom, will feature an Moul who will play as an amateur international field of 120 players guest competing for a share of the €25,000 prize fund. Spectators are invited to come along and watch these world class golfers free of charge and there will be a number of free golf clinics staged by the Professionals at the Stoke by Nayland Driving Range during the 3 day event. For details about the clinics please call the Pro Shop on 01206 265812 or check out the website page about the event at http://www.stokebynayland.com/wpga-international-challenge. Alison Nicholas MBE, one of Europe’s most successful players who captained the Solheim Cup and won the US Open and several Ladies European Tour titles, will be participating in both the Pro am which precedes the WPGA Challenge on 25th September, and in the 3 day event itself. BBC Look East presenters Stewart White and Tom Williams will also be playing in the Pro Am. Di Barnard, Tour Director LET Access Series said: “We are delighted to announce the addition of the WPGA International Challenge to the 2013 LETAS schedule. We are looking forward to working with the PGA and also the venue, Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa, which will offer first class facilities for the players. The LET Access Series was formed to create additional playing opportunities for female golfers and also to provide an important link between elite amateur and professional golf. We are also delighted to have the support of England Golf and will welcome a number of elite English amateurs to compete in the event.” In fact Stoke by Nayland member, Hannah Moul, who has been performing extremely well in National and Regional amateur events, will also be participating in this prestigious event as a guest amateur - and locals are encouraged to come and cheer her on! The PGA’s chief executive, Sandy Jones, commented, “It gives me much pleasure to be able to announce the WPGA international challenge on the LETAS Schedule. I am also very pleased to say that we are presenting the event at Stoke by Nayland, a venue that is well known to us and has partnered the PGA on many past occasions to stage great golf events. “ Situated in a stunning “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” on the Suffolk/Essex border, Stoke by Nayland has the experience of staging worldwide televised European Challenge Tour, European Senior Tour and PGA Europro events, and is looking forward to gracing the international golf stage once more. There will be a Pro Am tournament on Wednesday 25th September followed by a Gala Dinner and prize giving, and keen amateurs are invited to take a team of 4, which will include one of the top 30 women professionals competing in the 3 day event.
