Plant Parts presented with Queen’s Award by HRH the Duke of Kent A Hadleigh firm which has achieved the rare feat of winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise three years running has been presented with its latest award by HRH the Duke of Kent. Plant Parts Ltd completed a hat-trick of successes in the category for International Trade. The company, which has a workforce of 16, was recognised for its success in increasing its overseas sales by 76% over the last three years. At a presentation on the 31st of August, Lord Tollemache, the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, presented a scroll confirming the company’s award to director Robert Finch, with the Duke of Kent then presenting the trophy, an engraved glass bowl, to managing director Richard Finch. It is unusual for a business to sustain the progress necessary to be successful in the same category for three successive years, which is what Plant Parts Ltd has achieved. Plant Parts, established in 1991 from a house in Canterbury Gardens, moved to its present premises on Clifford Finch Way, Hadleigh, in 2007 supplies spare parts for construction machinery. Thanking staff for their contribution to the company’s success, Richard Finch said: “Any small business like Plant Parts is only really a collection of people and, for a company to be successful, all those people must perform to an excellent standard, which is the case here.”

Every production since we started up in 1999 has raised funds for charity, but as a departure we have recently set aside monies to buy an engraved wooden bench seat in memory of Mona Bruce and Robert James, our past presidents. The bench was skilfully made by the "Genesis" group in Ipswich. As these notes are written, plans are being made for its installation, on the field next to the hall. The Players thank the Community Council and the Village Hall Management for their cooperation. Hopefully, a little ceremony to "bless" the bench, perhaps with a raised glass or two to recall Mona and Robert, will be arranged. Coming next on stage, is a "feel good" show on the topic of Love and Marriage. It has attracted a cast of 16, who are now working on their songs and scripts. The show....."IT MUST BE LOVE" will be staged on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd November. Funds this time will be donated to St. Margaret’s, Whatfield. Diane Armour

The weather was perfect as Charlie Haylock opened the Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare Fete on 28th July. Visitors played games, browsed the stalls, met the animals and enjoyed music, food, ice cream and the Fun Dog Show and doggie activities organised by Jackie Woods of Ace Agility. There were many happy faces as friends, supporters and animals re-homed by SESAW met to celebrate 20 years of animal rescue in Leavenheath Kenny marvels at money raised at Fete and the magnificent sum of £3,500 was raised. Thank you to the Public for making the day such a success, to all those who contributed items and to our hard working volunteers – too many to mention but you know who you are! Our next event is a Craft Fair on 14th September at Leavenheath Village Hall, midday to 3pm. There will be a wide range of craft materials, handmade goods and a collectibles corner for the less creative visitors! Apologies to anyone who was disappointed when the Craft Fair was postponed. This was due to illness which highlights the need for more fundraisers. All we ask is a few hours, or an occasional day assisting at sales, collections, deliveries or distributing posters. Parking Disputes Between Neighbours Many conflicts between neighbours arise as the result of disputes over parked cars. Of course, if you have a separate driveway then there isn’t a problem, but issues do arise when people park their cars on the road upon which they live. The Highway Code tells you all the rules and regulations surrounding what you can and cannot do when it comes to parking. Drivers should all be aware that you cannot park on double yellow lines but there are other rules you might not be aware of so you should familiarise yourself with what is and isn’t permissible by law, before taking any further action. However, many parking disputes arise over the failure to observe parking ‘etiquette’ on the street where you live. But etiquette and the law are two totally different issues, so let’s take a look at both. What The Law Says As long as your vehicle is taxed and you are not contravening laws laid down within the Highway Code, you are allowed to park anywhere on a public highway (but not on footpaths/pavements) where it is legal to do so. Parking Outside Your Own House Etiquette, good manners and common sense are the main ingredients in avoiding parking disputes with your neighbours. Most people would choose to park outside their own home anyway because of the convenience, but what if you have more than one vehicle belonging to a single property and there are no driveways or you have a driveway but there is only enough room for one car? Basically, it’s an unwritten ‘rule’ that people will generally tend to park outside their own home but it’s important to note that no one has an automatic right to do so. It’s not always possible and, in addition to residents, other road users also have the right to park outside your home providing they are not contravening the Highway Code. To resolve this issue, the only thing you can do is to try to have a friendly word with your neighbour and explain to them why you’d prefer to park in front of your own house. You may find that they didn’t realise it bothered you and often simple courtesy and communicating your issue with your neighbour will resolve the problem. Shared Driveways If you share a driveway with your next door neighbour and a parking dispute occurs because of lack of space or one person’s vehicle is taking up more space, you can resolve this by checking your house deeds to find out where the boundaries lie. It’s also courteous to share responsibilities for the accessibility and tidiness of a shared driveway. If you have children, make sure you keep any toys off the other person's part of the shared driveway. If your next door neighbour simply decides they’ve had enough and drives straight in and ‘accidentally’ runs over a children’s toy, you’ve no legal redress – it’s your neighbour’s part of the driveway and your responsibility to keep things that belong to you, on your side. The Big Issue – Parking Directly In Front Of A Person’s Driveway This is, by far, the single most frequent cause of annoyance and arguments between neighbours and, unfortunately, the law does not help in this regard. It's common courtesy not to park directly in front of the driveway of another person’s property. After all, they may need to get in or out of the driveway with their vehicle. If you’ve blocked the access by parking directly in front of it, this will cause the vast majority, if not everybody, to become annoyed and to try to locate the owner of the vehicle to get them to move it. Therefore, most neighbourly people will never park directly in front of someone’s driveway. However, it's not illegal to do so! But the law does state you cannot prevent someone from entering the highway which would be an obstruction. The Highway Code, paragraph 207, asks that people DO NOT park their vehicle where it might cause an obstruction to other pedestrians or road users, and cites the example of not parking in front of another person’s driveway. However, this is where the law gets ‘cloudy’. It does not legally state that a person MUST NOT park in front of another driveway. Therefore, while mutual respect between road users tends to dictate a policy of not doing this so as to avoid unnecessary conflict, it’s not backed up by law, so if you experience problems with this and your neighbour digs their heels in and refuses to co-operate, all you can do, if you need guaranteed access and exit, is to park your car elsewhere and not on your driveway. In essence, while there are certain rules and regulations under the Highway Code relating to parking on public highways, mostly it’s a matter of common decency and courtesy. Speaking calmly to neighbours and explaining reasons why you might need to park here or there, if practical, will usually result in you getting what you want. Just remember, however, that unless they are breaking the law, people are entitled to park anywhere they want to on a public highway providing they aren’t in breach of the Highway Code. If things get really bad, you could try and get a third party involved to mediate. Mandy – PCSO 3108 Coleman For Non emergency police issues Tel: - 101 In an emergency dial 999

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard at Long Melford Hall I wanted to thank you, my readers, for your concern after I mentioned to you that I had been in hospital. So many of you have been in touch. I am pleased to say that I am now feeling very much better and I am glad to put my time in hospital behind me. It was with such great sadness that I received the news of the death of Rodney Burtt. Rodney died on 4 August quite suddenly and what a shock it was for his wife Anne. Rodney was a great character in Hadleigh and used to live opposite my office; he was an expert in wine and even invented a board game on the subject which was a best seller. Rodney was known to very many of you and I am sure that you will wish to join with me in sending heartfelt thoughts to Anne. There will be a Memorial Service at St Mary’s in Hadleigh on 5 September at 12 noon. I was pleased to see a number of you at the Classic Car Festival at Helmingham Hall. There was a splendid gathering of classic cars from across the spectrum. The picture shows me at Long Melford Hall after a classic car mystery tour. The weather was lovely and I enjoyed a picnic on the lawns and a tour of the house which was a favourite of Beatrix Potter who used to visit her relations there. The house was requisitioned by the army during the Second World War and sadly part of it was destroyed by fire in 1942 but was subsequently rebuilt. The house is run by the National Trust. One so often finds that parcels of land (such as a part of a garden) are sold off with a view to erecting a house. Many issues arise. One needs to consider rights that may be needed and as to how future contribution towards the cost of jointly used services and roads is to be structured. Obligations for the payment of money do not automatically run from one owner to the next. Planning Consents and planning conditions need to be reviewed. The sale plan has to be properly drawn and comply with Land Registry requirements. You should consider whether the house to be built is going to have the benefit of an NHBC policy. There are many issues that can trap the unwary. Do get in touch if you have something of this nature in prospect. One is always reluctant to get a Will drawn up. Somehow one feels one is confronting one’s destiny. I hope that we can make the process relatively painless. So again do ask us to prepare your Will. As you read my Column we will have started to tread the road to Christmas! Howard Gibbons

Puddle Ducks is coming to Suffolk

Come Come on in, the water’s water’s lovely!

Babies and toddlers across Suffolk will soon be learning unique swimming and lifesaving skills, thanks to the baby and pre-school swim school, Puddle Ducks, which will be arriving in Suffolk in October. Children can have lessons from a few days to 4 years old and have fun while they learn to swim in a safe, encouraging environment. Puddle Ducks classes, which last 30 minutes, will teach activities including swimming, submersion, floating, songs and games. Each session will incorporate rhyme, music and movement with songs that have been written by professional musicians. The focus is on fun and bonding for new and experienced parents and their little ones, meaning youngsters don’t even realise they’re learning to swim and are acquiring a skill that could save their lives. Franchisee, Claire, says “I believe that swimming is a skill that all children should be taught from an early age. It’s fun, helps them interact with other children and encourages them to lead a healthy life style. 1 in 3 children leave primary school unable to swim and 1 in 6 parents never take their child swimming*, and we’re on a mission to change that, starting right here in Suffolk!” Puddle Ducks is a national company which was founded in 2001. Quality of teaching has been the business’ number one priority. The teaching programme is constantly evolving, from the music that we sing in the pool, to the techniques we teach. Puddle Ducks classes are based on age, not ability, so children are learning amongst their peers. The first lessons will start at a private pool in Semer and Birch Farm in Hintlesham. There are also classes starting in Woodbridge and Levington. www.puddleducks.com/suffolk for details. *Source: Amateur Swimming Association

Join our family of Puddle Ducks and enjoy baby and pre-school pre-school swimming with the most caring and highly-trained teachers around.

A big Thankyou! Iwould like to give a big thank-you to everyone who has provided me with seed, plants, pots and bought plants over the last year. Your kindness and generosity has enabled us to raise £387.14 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). I have been thinking long and hard about the next cause for which I would like to try and raise some money and after much deliberation I have decided upon helping Lisa Matthews from Polstead who runs “Nature Citizen”. Some of you may know her as the “Bee Lady”. She has visited many local schools informing children about the wonderful world of the Bee. She is raising money to increase awareness in children about bees and their importance to our ecoculture. She is really passionate about this and when I recently met her I became an instant convert. As previously any seed, plants, pots etc that can be donated will be gratefully received and, of course, your continued generous purchases of the plants will be welcomed by Lisa and the “Bees”. Polstead Parish Council EMERGENCY PLAN FOR POLSTEAD Earlier this year the Parish Council circulated a questionnaire to assess the level of interest in formulating an Emergency Plan for Polstead to coordinate a community response in times of emergency, particularly during periods of extreme weather. The response was extremely encouraging, with some 20 households offering assistance by way of general manpower or specific skills/equipment, and a small number of persons registered their interest for being 'helped'. In order to progress the matter, it is proposed to have a public discussion with potential volunteers in the Village Hall on 19 September, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm - prior to the scheduled Council meeting that evening. A representative from Babergh District Council's Emergency Planning team will make a short introductory presentation followed by an informal discussion when we can hopefully agree on a practical way forward within the community. We hope that you will be able to attend Clerk: Dave Crimmin, Tel: 01787 375085 email: polsteadpc@btinternet.com www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

There have been two notable events at the County Council since May. The first was the launch at the Suffolk Show of Better Broadband. There is a website where you can find information about progress: http://www.betterbroadbandsuffolk.com. In Cosford Whatfield is one of the first communities that will benefit, but the project is ahead of target and everyone should see some improvement in speed by the end of 2015. The second was the publication of ‘No School an Island’ prepared by the RSA with the aim of raising educational standards in our schools. This can be read in full on the Suffolk County Council website. Activities are already underway to put some recommendations into practice. Councillors with cabinet portfolios and lead officers have been meeting in what would, in the past, have been smoke filled rooms, to try to find ways of cutting £150m from the four year Budget. There is no official news as yet but, judging by the worried frowns and the regularity of the meetings, the conclusion must be drawn that the task is proving difficult. This is not surprising. Many of the easier options have now been exhausted and discussions must now be focussed on how to deliver front line services in the new cash strapped environment. Cutting our funds is an easy option for Central Government. Suggestions by Local Government leaders of all political parties that cuts are too deep have fallen on deaf and, it has to be said, unsympathetic ears. The position is worse for Suffolk because it is a largely rural county. In July the House of Commons Environment Committee issued a report pointing out that the calculation of funding for rural areas is inherently unfair. It costs more to deliver services and yet per capita funding is less than half of that seen in urban areas. This has received much press comment, so it is astonishing that following the latest funding review, published since the Committee report, the so-called ‘Rural Deficit’ is likely to widen further during the next round. Truly it seems that those in Westminster cannot think beyond the M25. Jenny Antill is Suffolk County Councillor for the Cosford Division. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Shush!! I’m typing this quietly because I’m Bob; no, well, Ebony is on shutdown and I don’t want to wake him up as I’ve decided to high jack his Blog this month. I’m one of the hairy hoofed ones he keeps writing about, so this time it is from the horse’s mouth! I just wanted to mention that The Hadleigh Wives Group came up the other week to look around and renew their sponsorship of Rocky: I think they enjoyed the visit and we enjoyed seeing them; some of them even got to have a ride on Ebony. That of course leads me easily onto the subject of Sponsorship. You, or any of your family or friends can sponsor one of us and it only costs £25 for the year. For this you get a photo of whichever one of us you choose and your name will join other sponsors shown, framed, outside the stable door. We like it because it makes it personal between you and us, and we’re happy to see you if you want to visit and have your photo taken with us by way of thanking you for helping The Centre. Details are available from The Centre but, if you go to our Website and look under Fund Raising you can download a Sponsorship Form and send off direct to Diane Godfrey who is in charge of this sort of thing: we’re got our photos on the site too (Although as a new boy I’m not there yet but, I’m quite a looker, even if I say it myself). Anyway, I look forward to welcoming you to our growing Sponsor a Pony Club; for those of you at School why not make it a project on the life of an RDA Pony? We also held our AGM recently and I’m pleased to tell you that one of our Instructors, Jan McKillop, was presented with The Shelley Centre ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award Certificate by the other Jan, our Chairman. Jan McK works very hard for us and if you are on the Monday or Friday p.m. shift, do expect to be offered delicious home made cake; she’s our very own version of ‘The Great British Bake Off’ as seen on TV. Oh! Oh! The lights are flashing so Ebony must be powering up so I’d better vanish pronto but, before I do, don’t forget, Term starts on 9th September! Kersey Mill Newsletter As the dust settles after the great time we all had during the Open Day we can reflect a little on all that has passed since the massive challenge of the restoration of the mill started. We have come on in leaps and bounds as the many specialist gathered around the owners – Steve and Alison – providing much needed advice for the restoration. Many of the advisors enjoyed a get together after the event to plan the next part of the project. The kestrels have flown the nest, the signets moved further downstream and the mole having a great time popping up all over the lawns. All in all the summer has been stunning. A while back we wrote about the sad case of a young lad Leech falling to his death in the cogs of the water wheel at the mill. This month we have another story of a tragic death of Ellen Bradbrook who died just after her 15th birthday on March 8th 1893 when fire broke out in the mill caused by the highly volatile flour dust igniting and setting sections of the living accommodation alight.

Ellen Bradbrook standing – her sister Kate beside her. The cross in the graveyard. A sad memorial in the form of an iron cross marks her grave in Kersey church yard as shown. Ellen was a given a book of virgin Martyrs presented to her a week before her death. Perhaps an omen as the book recorded all the young women who died before they were able to become wives and mothers. On a lighter note the appeal is still going well for the teeth in the waterwheel with more sponsors coming forward to help such a great project. As a novel Christmas (yes – that dreaded word) present that will survive many generation to come a wooden tooth for the water wheel is a gift for all time. Not only will it help the mill turn – it will be a talking point for you around the (that word) table in December. Please keep in touch and we look forward to hearing from you with tales of the mill. In the meantime – happy summer holidays. Photos and information contributed by Diana McLusky in America.

TAI CHI

Learn Tai Chi for improved health, inner calm and enhanced energy Tai Chi is a centuries old mar al art that has evolved to maximise its health promo ng poten al. Prac sed slowly and medita vely, the flowing moves develop a strong core, improve balance, open the joints and relax the mind. In the weekly classes you will learn interlinking moves that create a form, that gently massages the internal organs, stretches the body and creates a feeling of well-being. Posi ve benefits can be experienced immediately and increase with prac ce.

Tai Chi Explained A Question and Answer session with Richard Napper Q – Is it like yoga? A – It’s like yoga in motion but Chinese in origin. There’s an emphasis on breathing and posture but Tai Chi is performed standing up in a flowing form of linked moves. Q – Why is Tai Chi performed so slowly? A – Every move has a unique shape and it helps the learning process if you do them deliberately. Also, it’s a case of slowly and deeply rather than fast and furious. Q – Does it have health benefits? A – In China it’s been revered as a potent health regime for centuries and though it was suppressed by the Communists for decades, it now enjoys a restored reputation. In fact, now there are scientific institutes investigating how it works. Q – Have they worked it out? A – They’ve started, though Tai Chi is slow to give up its secrets. In California, scientists strapped electrodes to a Tai Chi Master’s head to record how his brain waves changed during Tai Chi. In New York, a controlled experiment showed how post-operative heart patients recovered quicker with daily Tai Chi. Q – When I’ve seen Tai Chi it doesn’t look like it’s much of a workout. Is it? A – You’d be surprised! While you don’t need to be fit or healthy to do Tai Chi, it definitely requires aerobic effort and is taxing in a gentle way. The slightly squatted position works the heart and deep breathing expands the lungs. Q – What other benefits does it have? A – Tai Chi improves body alignment while the circular movements seem to strengthen the joints. Focus on the centre of gravity encourages better balance, while the slow twisting of the torso massages the viscera. Q – What about the mental side of things? A – Tai Chi is meditation in motion. It’s a great stress-buster and really helps the mind and body relax. I feel it stimulates the brain, making me more aware and alert. After Tai Chi, I always feel good, which is a big incentive to do it again. Q – Lastly, is Tai Chi a real martial art? A – Yes, but I don’t emphasise that side of things in class. As I get more middle aged the health payoff becomes more important. Classes commence every Monday in Hadleigh Guildhall 7.00pm – 8.00pm from September 2nd. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 8 (Autumn 2013) Thanks to reader Ada Korchak, the front cover features the demise of a former familiar site on the corner of High Street and Ipswich Road. In 1891, Newberry Works was created by Jabez Death, Bildeston builder and undertaker, and now, three houses No. 32 High Street and Nos 1 and 2 Ipswich Road are on the site. John Gardiner of Sheringham, Norfolk, is welcomed to the pages of the magazine for the first time as he relates his memories of the former village school between Chapel Street and Duke Street during the 1950s, in which tales of teachers, lessons and schol-friends are recalled. The series ‘Lords of the manor’ has reached the 17th century, when John Revett purchased the manorial rights and became the first resident lord at Bildeston Hall. His will and that of his son William give detail to the lives of middle-ranking gentry at that period. Also from the 17th century is the story of William Dowsing, the iconoclast, famous for his visits to Suffolk’s churches to remove offending images remaining from medieval times. If St Mary’s Church as not recorded in his diary of destruction, then what was his connection with Bildeston? After an extension to the franchise in 1884, the following year was the first opportunity for many men to vote in a general election. In some Suffolk towns and villages, as in other parts of the country, mischevious actions fuelled by alcohol got out of hand. Events at Bildeston on polling day Tuesday 1 December 1885 and subsequent consequences at Hadleigh Magistrates Court are told as well as the results of the election, which seemed to be of secondary importance as far as local newspapers were concerned. Richard O’Sullivan, proprietor of Bank House Stores, kindly loaned the title deeds from which the story of Bildeston’s village shop is told. You may remember some of the people behind the counter in the 20th century: Earle and Florence Bantock, Leon and Constance Stapel and then their son Leon Stapel and his wife Kate. Would you like the history of your home featured in the series ‘Hidden Histories’? If so, please contact the editor Sue Andrews on 01449 740673. Issue 8 is on sale at the beginning of September price £3 at Bank House Stores and at Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, at Keith Avis in Hadleigh and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer

Focus on Rose Beauty Rooms Kersey Mill It is now almost a year since the newly refurbished Kersey Mill opened in its picturesque local setting with Rose Beauty Rooms, Little Treats Coffee Shop, The Venue, The Revival Exchange, Health & Fitness, Pilates Studio, J. Parker Studios, Jo’s Cottage Crafts and a florist shop opening shortly! We speak to Rosie of Rose Beauty Rooms to hear how her beauty rooms have progressed. What encouraged you to open your Beauty Rooms? After qualifying at Suffolk New College with NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Beauty Therapy and starting work I had so many ideas of my own I wanted to put into practise and was full of enthusiasm so when the opportunity at Kersey Mill arose I jumped at the chance. The salon was to start with an empty shell, which was brilliant, as I could get to work creating exactly what I needed to get the business up and running. It was an exciting time! What treatments do you offer? A very large range, manicures, gel polish, nail art; this is where my artistic skills come into their own. My favourite and the funniest over the last year has been the Christmas pudding nails, all hand painted! We also offer pedicures, facials, massages, waxing, eye treatments, eyelash extensions and spray tans. We also do Airbase Airbrush make up for weddings and special occasions and pamper parties. What age are your customers? All ages come to the beauty rooms. Today, age has no bearing on what treatments ladies have. I think whatever relaxes and makes the individual feel good is right for them. We want everyone to leave us feeling a million dollars! What are your plans for the future? To build on what we have achieved so far, expanding the treatments we offer, keeping up to date with current trends. We hosted our first Pamper Party for girls this week. Five 12 year olds arrived at the beauty rooms to celebrate a birthday. The girls had their nails filed and painted with nail art whilst enjoying soft drinks, nibbles and of course birthday cake. Great fun! I am sure we will host many more in the future. Finally, how do you unwind after a hard day making everyone else feel special? I do not have very much free time for treatments myself so after a long day I am quite happy to go home, have a long bubble bath, relax and go to bed but I wouldn’t have it any other way as I am fulfilling my dream by having my own beauty rooms. Come along for a chat or give me a call on 01473 829069. I look forward to seeing you soon. Rosie

We all love our summer holidays but they can do a lot of damage to our waistlines and when we look at the holiday photos we resolve never to do that again! But, we often throw caution to the wind on holiday and it gets harder to deal with the aftermath each time. So maybe now is the time to deal with that excess baggage before we cover ourselves up for winter and pretend we are happy with the way we look! It’s also a great time to think about getting into your party dress for the Christmas parties! I know it seems a long way off but we’ve had the last Bank Holiday till then and the children are back at school!! So if you were covered up on the beach while everyone else was swimming or enjoying the sun is now the time for you to make those changes? The B Natural music festival, now in it's third fabulous year, is preparing to rock Bildeston on Saturday and Sunday 7th/8th September 2013, and promises to be more spectacular than ever. This time, on the Clocktower Stage, Saturday's line-up includes Polar Collective, rock giants Walkway, the celebrated Wattisham Military Wives choir, and the ever-popular Turntable belting out funk and rock classics. Also on the bill; foot-tapping folk from Fred's House, plus unmissable breakthrough acts Juliyaa and Passport to Stockholm. Remember, you saw them here first. Sunday's line-up is equally irresistible, kicking off with a Musical Brunch served in the village square, and music from, among others, the gloriously exhilarating Rabble Chorus, Barbara Shop's unique take on acapella, and a roof-raising set from The Petty Heartbreakers. And don't miss The Broadside Boys' inimitable brand of folk-rock, and mesmerising performances from Marz Harley, Lucy Sampson and Oliver Daldry. All weekend, lots more music will be on offer in pubs and numerous Musical Gardens around the village - some serving tea and indecent amounts of cake - with acts including acoustic guitar, beatboxing, classical ensembles and opera. Our unique Beehive bar is open all weekend for Pimms, local real ale and soft drinks, and stalls selling delicious locally-sourced food will feed hungry musiclovers everything from curry to cupcakes. What's not to love? Time; Saturday 7th, 12 midday - 7.30pm; Sunday 8th, 10am - 5pm Entry; Music in the Clocktower Square is free. Programmes/Maps for Musical Gardens; £2. 60th Burstall Show

G.J. WAT TS

Saturday 3rd August 2013 This was a very special day for the small community of Burstall as it celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Show. There are not many shows in Suffolk that have achieved such continuity in staging shows for such a long period, and it was with great pleasure that several people who have been associated with previous shows over the years made a special effort to attend, including about ten people who could remember being at the first show in 1954. There was an excellent attendance on an ideal day, and the village are very grateful to the support given to this event in aid of Village Hall Funds. In spite of a difficult season, there were 127 different exhibitors on the day. Entries in the vegetable section were of a very high standard, and John Mower from Hintlesham won the Class Cup and the award for the Best Vegetable entry in the Show with his superb Leeks, some of the best that the Judges had seen anywhere this year. David Legerton won the Extreme Vegetable Class, and the best Flower exhibit came from Hugh Richards, who also won the cup for this class. Angela Legerton again won the Flower Arranging Class and the best exhibit in that class. There were very strong entries in the Preserves, Cookery and Handicrafts sections, and these were much praised by the Judges. Lisa Gardner won the Preserves Cup, Ann Day the Burstall Cookery Cup, Jane Sago from Bramford the Open Cookery Cup, and Anna Cooper the Open Handicrafts Cup. There were good entries in the Children’s Classes, and the enthusiasm of those competing augurs well for the future. Charlie Woolf, Chloe Macmillan and Naomi Cornish won the Children’s trophies for their respective age groups, and the best exhibit in these classes was won by Ben Debman In the afternoon, the show was formally opened by Rob Dunger of BBC Radio Suffolk, and musical entertainment was provided by the Suffolk Samba Band and the Frog Island Jazz Band in the Village Hall grounds. Several Classic Vehicles on display brought back happy memories to many, and displays given by the Five Rivers Dog Agility Club demonstrated the considerable skills of dogs and their owners to great effect. Some memories of previous shows were recalled on a continuous Video Display in the new pavilion. Such a happy day does not happen by accident. Much hard work was expended by many people to achieve yet another great success. Thanks go to all who kindly and cheerfully helped and contributed. Special thanks to the sponsors, to the stewards, judges and exhibitors of the Flower Show, to donors of Grand Draw Prizes, bottles and other items for sale on the stalls. Thanks also to those who prepared the showground, organised, erected and helped with side shows, and last but not least to those who contributed food and served refreshments throughout the day, and to those who washed up and cleared up at the end. The standard of food, much of it donated, was excellent and a marvellous credit to the limited resources of the small parish of Burstall. Those who worked so hard to provide and serve lunches, teas, BBQ food, ice creams, cakes and drinks throughout the day really do deserve special praise. Trophies were presented by the President of the Show to the very worthy prize winners, and the Show concluded with an auction of promises and surplus produce (kindly donated by exhibitors) in aid of Village Hall Funds. Bildeston’s French Celebration! With our seemingly endless days of sunshine being a reminder of Provencale summers, Cathy Bullen - proprietor of Bildeston’s stylish French store The Boule-in - continues to celebrate in French fashion with her forthcoming Exhibition: “Every autumn our village held a ‘Fete du Coing’ which was a celebration of the Quince harvest” says Cathy, who lived with her family in Provence for several years before returning home to Bildeston and setting up The Boule-in 2 years ago. The Boule-in, whose own ‘Fete du Coing’ runs from Saturday September 28th until Sunday 6th October, exhibits it’s stylish collection of French home and gardenware within it’s charming barn and garden. “I think it’s so much more enjoyable to see individual pieces in a ‘real’ setting “ says Cathy, whose pretty garden is creatively filled with French furniture and pieces from the shop “it makes it so much easier to picture how things can look” she adds “ I’m always getting ideas and inspiration for my own home when we visit France!” The newly planted quince tree won’t be bearing fruit this autumn but hopefully will next year – and with a bit of luck it will blossom during one of the Exhibition weeks next Spring too! Did you know that there could soon be a working quarry within 700 yards of the outskirts of Hadleigh? Despite the fact that Suffolk County Council have already given the go ahead, a group of residents living near the old quarry on Aldham Mill Hill have stepped up their efforts to stop its reopening after 40 years without use.. They believe that the public consultation process was inadequate and should be reviewed. The application was announced by just two small notices at the site and 14 letters delivered to the households deemed (arbitrarily) to be most affected (6 never received the letter) – plus a small obligatory notice placed in the EADT, giving Hadleigh residents little chance to contest any of the conditions and paving the way for the Council to give the green light to re-opening. To make up for the resulting lack of awareness, the Residents' Group have produced two leaflets that highlight their key concerns over issues such as noise, dust, wildlife, visual impact and especially road safety. The leaflets will be hand delivered to households in Whatfield and on the estate close to the Aldham Mill Hill / Hadleigh bypass junction – residents who would most certainly be affected by the quarry in one way or another, and who should have been included in the initial consultation process. A web site has also been set up that gives the full story to date and provides a quick and easy way to contact Suffolk County Council with objections. The Aldham Tye/Ivy Tree Lane Residents' Group would ask everyone to visit the website at www.w-a-d.com/hadleighquarry.html and consider where they stand on this development.

Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club 112a High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EL

A J Carpets is a family run business with 30 years experience in floor coverings

Following a drive to find new players this summer, we were very pleased to welcome three recruits who we hope will enjoy the sport enough to join us on a permanent basis. Certainly Keith enjoyed it enough to put pen to paper with this poem. We hope it may encourage others to ‘have a go’ - it’s really good fun and can be as competitive or not as you choose. We can be found most Tuesdays 7.30pm at Whatfield Village Hall.

I’ve had a try at Carpet Bowls I’ve wanted to for years I found it quite exciting, though I’m ‘wet behind the ears’ Sheila said “just come along to get involved and try us” Despite the balance of the Balls there isn’t any bias

Tel: 01473 822240

The basics all explained so well, the experts watched with care Then comes that dreadful moment when we have to take our share With ball in hand and ‘tween the blocks we make our first approach A very friendly expert there to be our private ‘Coach’

www.ajcarpets.co.uk Email kevinsparkes@btconnect.com

Release the Ball and watch it go with something of a twiddle Straight down the line and ‘wallop’ hit that steel thing in the middle It’s all a case of practice if we want to do it right But watching the direction of the Balls fills me with fright The proper way to hold the Ball, release it when you’re ready Not too fast and not too slow, a gentle flow so steady The object of the exercise is try to reach the Jack The need for expertise is clear and of it there’s a lack But never mind, just persevere and it will come at last It’s gratifying when you see the ‘Pros’ go shooting past So Ball in hand and back bent low, a really gentle swing Where is that Jack, so many Balls, I just can’t see a thing All in all a really pleasant evening, tense but nice A friendly group of Members who are there to give advice All other sports throughout the years I’ve had to call a day But this one is so gentle and I’d really like to play Time alone will tell if I can ever get it right By practicing from time to time when you have a Club Night So thank you Sheila for the invitation to take part I’ll do my best and promise won’t upset the apple cart

Pause for thought For many years one of the regular contributors to ‘Pause for thought’ has been Colin Bull. Colin used to run the chemist shop on the high street and was the first mayor of the town in 1974. He was a man who moved with the times and even in his 90’s kept up with technology. The month of September was to be written by Colin, sadly he passed away on July 28th. However, Colin had prepared his thanksgiving service, he picked the songs and readings, it is reasonable to say that what he picked for that occasion, summed up what he wants us to pause and think about. The things which shine clearest are his faith in a dependable faithful God who loved him, who had never let him down, and had sent his son to save him. This faith meant Colin desired to be an encouragement and to love others selflessly in the way his God had selflessly loved him. While very ill this faith meant he could face his end with complete peace and with hope that the future was full of promise because of Jesus. The possibility of a transformed life, peace with God and hope for the future even in the face of life’s greatest struggles is something I’m sure Colin would want us all to pause and seriously think about. ALL WELCOME!

Chernobyl Childrens Life Line On the evening of Friday August 2nd August we held our leaving party for the children, Hosts and Supporters at the Cedars hotel in Stowmarket. The children performed a concert for which they had been practising hard and then went on to enjoy a disco especially geared towards them. Everyone who attended had a great time and Sunday 4th August saw the return to Belarus of the 20 children who had been staying with families in the local areas for the last four weeks. Although a few tears were shed at departure the children were soon cheerfully looking forward to being reunited with their families once more and sharing the many happy memories they take with them. Not only must we thank our Host families for their work in this project but also the many people who support us throughout the year, raising funds to enable us to bring the children and providing sponsored outings and events for them whilst they are here, giving their time free of charge, providing valuable dental and optical services free of charge, collecting clothing, donating medicines to take home and many other items which all benefit either these children or those at home in Belarus. Unfortunately the children still suffer with the same terrible dental problems caused by their poor diet and living conditions, this year saw a total of 39 extractions and 28 fillings within the group and all carried out on the same day! Our special thanks must go to all of our Sponsors and Supporters, many of whom I have never met but who continue to help us in the background year on year, it seems like only yesterday we started this group but it has now been six years with over 150 children having been brought to the Mid Suffolk area for recuperation health breaks. So many local people have contributed to our cause and supported us in many ways with donations and gifts for the children and via our Charity Shop. It is not possible to mention everyone here but without you the children would not have had the wonderful time they have had, this is appreciated more than you will know. We are now actively seeking new Host Families for the 2014 visit, whilst this might seem quite early we do have to place the invitation just after Christmas hence the need to start preparations now. If you think you could give a home to a child/children for 4 weeks from 6th July 2014 to 3rd August we would love to hear from you. The minimum requirement is a mattress on the floor for sleeping and a loving home. Anyone may apply to Host, age and circumstances are no barrier. All the children meet during working hours Monday to Friday at our Centre in Needham Market and there are always plenty of volunteers to help outside these hours meaning that working families and people with other commitments are able to Host. If you would like to help in any way at all, either Hosting a child in 2014 or contributing something, no matter how small, to the items we are collecting or helping in our Charity shop, please do get in touch. With many thanks as always to all of you, Elizabeth Parker Link Chair 01449 760343 07771 550868 www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk

Brendan Oakes Memorial Fishing Match Saturday 27 July at Bullocky Fenn Another fine July weekend and for the eighth year running good weather for the Brendan Oakes Memorial fishing match organised and supported by HADAS at Bullocky Fenn. This years event was organised by HADAS and sponsored by Surefix Windows, Doors and Conservatories and AK Services of Hadleigh. A day that got warmer and warmer as the fish sunk lower and lower; but this did not deter the willing competitors from HADAS and other local fishing clubs. Attendence was down on last year but the match still raised £860 for the Brendan Oakes Trust. This years winner was the Chairman of HADAS; Mr Kevin Wilding. Kevin has been a leading light in the support of the Trust at this event over the last 8 years and we congratulate him on his well deserved victory. Everyone enjoyed a BBQ at the end of the match when the raffle and auction lots were bid for. Valerie and I wish to thank HADAS and our sponsors for their continued support of this annual fishing match. The Trust continues to support teenagers with cancer in the East Anglia region. We look forward to next year and hope you all come back again to support the Trust doing what you enjoy. Mark Oakes

Polstead Art Group Our Art Exhibition was more successful than ever this year so a very big “Thank you” to all who came along. It’s also encouraging to read the comments in the visitors’ book and we are grateful to all who took the time to write them. Nick Palmer’s exhibition of computer generated art was very popular and succesful. He has donated the proceeds to the MND Charity. Motor neurone disease is a most debiliting condition. Nick has the misfortune to suffer from it and has adapted his artistic talent as his condition has deteriorated. He has done it with good humour - and tolerance of his fellow artists watching amazing pictures appear at the touch of his thumb! People like Nick and his more famous fellow sufferer Prof. Stephen Hawkin are so deserving of our admiration. If you would like to make a donation to the MND Charity accessing the MND Association web site makes it easy for either a ‘one-off’ or group donation. Pat Brown

Birch Farm Swim School After several years of outsourcing the swimming lessons Birch Farm are now running lessons themselves again. With Here at Birch Farm we are developing something unique in terms of terms and prices etc our aim is to have 3 terms per yr Autumn, Spring and Summer with a 2 week break at Christmas a 1 week break at Easter and a 2 week break in the summer. Our term structure ensures that children will have continuous development but also have the chance to have a break as they are often very tired or end up seeing swimming as a chore if they come all year. We will also be offering a 10% sibling discount off the eldest child if you have more than 1 child attending lessons. Class times and stages will be reviewed by staff on a regular basis and if we find all children are completing a stage at the same time it may be easier for the parents to have the stage of the class changed rather than the time. Due to the length of the terms some children may complete stages part way through a term this can easily be discussed with you as parents and your child can move and receive a certificate part way through the term if needed so ensuring continuous development based on individual children's needs. The cost include certificates, badges and stickers once the stage is completed if they do not complete a stage at the end of the term a achievement certificate will be issued to help to motivate the children. With our warm water teachers in the pool when required and small classes our unique school ensures safe and competent swimmers. We are following the ASA National plan so if you move house or are new to the area our classes will easily fit into programmes delivered by other pools across the country. If you are interested in finding out more about our lessons call us on 01473 652152 or email swimming@birchfarm.co.uk 26

Kelly Mires Head Coach of Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics club, was expecting a busy day on June 1st for the opening of the club. But she certainly could not have envisaged the massive demand for places. The opening day was a resounding success said Kelly with over a hundred children from 4 years upwards registering for places. The club has quickly established as a superb fun filled atmosphere for the children to learn this demanding sport. The club offer a five piece rotation on Bars. Beam, Floor, Vault and Trampette. There are highly skilled coaches with over forty years experience, as well as younger members of the coaching team who are learning there craft. The feedback from our parents has been excellent and it is wonderful to see so many children in our new purple club leotards looking very smart and enjoying the exercise with great enthusiasm every Saturday Morning. It's so important in this day and age says Kelly to get your children moving, they cannot play out like they used to so our club offers a wonderful way for the children to get fit and learn a fantastic. Sport. We received a very kind and much appreciated donation from Hadleigh Thrift Shop and with some additional fund raising over the summer we are hoping to be able to buy some new specialist equipment, which we really need for our children to develop within the sport. We intend to run holiday clubs starting at the beginning of 2014. More details to follow on this. Due to the high demand for places we have expanded and added extra classes starting September from 5pm to 6pm and 6pm to 7pm. We have one or two openings in the Saturday Morning session so if you would like to reserve place please call me. If you want to know more about our club then please check us out on the website hadleighstarsgymnastics.co.uk. News from the Garden Personal Thoughts At this time of year I am looking forward to eating my own apples again with the variety of flavours that I have available. My apple trees are mainly small bush ones, but with some larger half standards. A small bush tree will give you 20 to 30 apples, whilst a half standard may give you a half a hundredweight in a good year. My first apple is "Irish Peach" which is a little bit earlier than Discovery, and my last is D'Arcy Spice, which is picked in late October. Most gardens have space for one or two small apple trees, and now is the time to order them. make sure the varieties you choose will be in flower at the same time, by checking in a reference book or on the internet. It is a good time to order and plant other fruit both hard and soft. One of the most rewarding soft fruits is the blackberry. I have one plant of a late thornless variety called "Loch Ness", and it is trained on wires as a hedge. over the last 6 years it has averaged 7 lb of fruit per year. Red currants are less easy to fit into a small garden, but a red currant bush can yield at least 10 lb of fruit. Weather Records In July at Kersey there were 24.2 mm (0.95") of rain, which is very low. The 3 month figure was 87.2 mm (3.4") which is about 60% of the average. Last year was wet , but in the first 7 moths of 2013 we have only had half of what we had in the same 7 months last year. We badly need a significant amount of rain for our gardens, but the farmers probably hope it will keep dry until they finish the harvest. In June the maximum temperature was 30 Cel (86F), which is quite typical. The minimum temperature for June was 11 Cel (52F) which is again quite normal. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 17 Cel (63F), which is typical for mid August. Open Gardens Sadly we are getting to the end of the Open Garden season, so some of these are a bit further away from Hadleigh than usual All Thurs/Fri in Sept Feeringbury Manor Coggeshall Rd, Feering CO5 9RB Sun 8 Sept Moverons Brightlingsea CO7 0SB Sat 14 Sept Wyken Hall Stanton IP31 2DW Sun 15 Sept Wyken Hall Stanton IP31 2DW Sun 15 Sept Spencers Tilbury Road Great Yeldham CO9 4JG Hints In September it is time to enjoy the last of our Summer. Temperatures start to drop, and unless we have been very good at looking after them our annuals will be well past their best. Nice days provide a good chance to tidy up before the Winter Does your garden still have plants to keep it interesting in September. Dahlias and Geraniums (pelargoniums) will keep up their colourful display until frosts occur. Often around here that is not until early November. Other useful plants for this period of the year are the various Michaelmas Daisies, the hardy chrysanthemums, anemone japonica and the Sedums like the variety "Autumn Joy". Have a look and see if there are places where you could use some of these plants to improve your September garden next year. There are also some bulbs which flower at this time including some varieties of cyclamen, and the Autumn Crocus (Colchicum). Some of the later will flower happily indoors without even planting them in soil. Planted in the garden they will last for years, but need to be planted where the foliage in Spring will not be a nuisance. September is the time at which bulbs appear in garden centres, and there are a marvellous range available nowadays to brighten our houses and gardens. The range of colours and flower shapes in daffodils seems to be increasing all the time, and I plan to add a few new varieties to my collection this year. CASUAL VACANCY

Teenager Lewis grabs the Salver One of the last finishers of the day, teenager Lewis Woodhead, leaped into the lead to take the Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver trophy at Newton Green Golf Club. The salver – the traditional Saturday highlight of the club’s golf week – attracted 118 entries, and 17-yearold Woodhead scored an impressive 44 Stableford points off a handicap of 11 – now cut to nine. It makes him yet another junior at Jonathan Lambert and Lewis Woodhead the club holding a single figure handicap, and his success came only a few weeks after his father Ian regained the club men’s championship crown. Woodhead junior nudged out Leighann Wordley, on 43 points, who had been the long-time leader in the club house. Gary Twyman came in with 41 points for the best man award. Golf week sponsor Jonathan Lambert presented the awards during the evening presentation party staged in a marquee recently acquired by the club The tent helped bring a new dimension to the week, with all four lunches staged under canvas for the four, mid-week morning events. The Saturday night also featured the Victory Jazz Band in the club house. Yet again, the festival attracted more than 500 entries over the five days, and with the course in immaculate condition, the festival again provided a fine showcase for the club. Results Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver: 44 Lewis Woodhead (salver winner), 43 Leighann Wordley (best lady), 41 Gary Twyman (best man). Others: 41 Carolyn Cocksedge, 40 Neil Jacobs, Rebecca Evans, Ben Uttridge, 39 John Matthews, Gavin Scott, Rosemany Jackson. Delaney Scramble: Sue Thurgate, Kate Fraser, Peter Cade, James Fraser. Boxford Bike Club Ride London! On Saturday 4th August over 20 members of Boxford Bike Club took on the challenge of the Ride London-Surrey 100 mile cycling sportive, which formed part of the 2 day long Ride London festival. The Olympic Legacy event dreamt up by Boris Johnson, started at the Olympic village in Stratford. The 100 mile traffic free route then wound its way through central London, through Richmond Park and out into Surrey Kevin Bridge, Alan Leeder, David Payne, taking in the spectacular Trevor Crisell and Niall Fitzgerald jubilant countryside of the North in crossing the finishing line on the Mall Downs. The riders then made their way back into London and finished on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. Over 20,000 riders took part in the ride which will become a yearly event. Boxford Bike Club had 3 teams of 4 riders entered as well as riders entered as individuals. All riders completed the ride in super fast times (between 4hrs 20mins and 7 hours), driven on by the amazing shouts of encouragement from the thousands of Riders Andy Taczynski, Rhodri Taylor, Pete spectators that lined the route. Many of the Boxford Hender, Matthew Froggatt and Matthew riders used the ride to raise Shinn with their finisher’s medals money for a range of charities too, raising thousands for a number of worthy causes. As a relatively small cycling club we were really well represented which made the event even more enjoyable and memorable.

Hadleigh Tennis Club A busy Summer season indeed! The club’s competitive spirit has been well tested over the last couple of months, which have seen glorious sunshine and perfect conditions for tennis. Perhaps spurned on by Andy’s Wimbledon success, the Hadleigh men were able to regain the “1881 trophy” from Bildeston, (see report below) and the Women were able to keep hold of the “1881 plate”. We have also staged a very competitive Ladies’ Doubles tournament, as you can see from the following report: The annual Ladies Doubles tournament took place on Sunday 4th August. The event was well subscribed by players and supporters alike, with a ‘round robin’ tournament involving all entrants, leading to a Final between the top four scorers. The Final was keenly contested, with Debra Young and Jill Wilson ultimately overcoming a valiant challenge from Kate White and Sandy Claireaux in a gripping and very competitive match. Congratulations to Debra and Jill, who were presented with the Challenge Trophies by Club Chairman Geoff Scott. Bildeston Vs Hadleigh, 132 years on and still competing! As one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country, Hadleigh Tennis Club`s fixture list goes back a long way. One of our oldest recorded matches took place between the gentlemen of Hadleigh and the gentlemen of Bildeston on 18th August 1881. Over the past few years this fixture has been renewed between the clubs and there has also been a Ladies doubles added to the event. On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the match, a new trophy for the match was presented; - the “1881 Cup” along with an “1881 Plate” for the Ladies doubles. It is for these trophies that this year’s commemorative matches were played on Saturday 27th July. There were some very well contested matches on a lovely sunny afternoon. The “1881 Cup” was regained by the gentlemen of Hadleigh, having lost it to Bildeston last year. The Ladies “1881” Plate was retained by the Hadleigh ladies. Following the matches, the long association between the Clubs was celebrated with a traditional post match tea, where a toast was drunk to “history, tennis and friendship”. A great tradition for what is probably one of the oldest competitive sports matches for the town (unless your readers know better? If so, please let us know). We look forward to the 133rd year next year. Below are pictures of the teams who include: For Hadleigh: Trevor Rowland, Ben Daniels, Bill Bailey, Geoff Scott, Debra Young, Linda Dhondy, Liz Allen and Jan Richards. For Bildeston: Martin Rodgers, Richard Breeze, David Sheehan, Adam Parkins, Simone Beadle, Suzanne Clements, Our website has recently been subject to a “makeover”, in order to make the information clearer and provide better directions to the club and courts. We are also publishing dates for club events in a calendar on the website. Please go and have a look at it: www.hadleightennis.org.uk and feel free to give us any feedback about the site. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week during the summer months: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. We are pleased to advise that annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (this will be charged pro-rata for new members joining the club during the season). If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or contact Paul Knowles on 07747 637147
