Would you like to skipper an electric launch on Constable’s beautiful River Stour?
P&
SOLD
The River Stour Trust is looking for volunteers to join its team of skippers and crew operating its fleet of electric launches on the River Stour in Suffolk, made famous in John Constable’s paintings. The launches carry visitors to the river on trips from Flatford and Sudbury on weekends from April to October. The 21ft launches are simplicity itself to drive, with smooth, quiet electric motors, and maximum speeds of 4mph. Anyone who can handle a sailing boat or motorboat will be able to drive one, but if you have never driven a boat before, then full training, and familiarisation with the river will be provided, or you could join the support crews. The river is peaceful, with just swans and occasional rowing boats to negotiate, and you will find yourself drifting back 200 years to the days when it was a busy commercial waterway, with 50ft lighters towed in pairs by horses through 13 locks from the sea to Sudbury. Or you can join the elite team operating our restored River Stour Lighter. 50ft long, with two powerful electric drives, it is a test of skill to manoeuvre this 160-yearold craft through locks, with only inches to spare. The boats operate every weekend, and occasional weekdays, but you can volunteer for as many or few days as you wish. Or you may like to join our work parties, restoring locks and the navigation. For more information contact: administrator@riverstourtrust.org Tel: 01787 313199. Or visit: www.riverstourtrust.org

New official town website to promote wide range of services A town council is celebrating the launch of its brand new website which will help to promote the area and assist people to access vital local services. The new Sudbury Town Council website provides information on a wide range of services available to people who live, work and visit the town. It also promotes the town’s key tourist attractions and beauty spots as well as providing fascinating historical information. Mayor’s Secretary Teresa Elford, who played a major role in developing the new website, said: “Our old website was a little outdated and difficult to use and we felt it really didn’t do the town or the council justice. “Our brief for the new site was for it to contain a very wide range of local information, which was clear and easy to find. We also wanted the site to look professional and depict the beauty and wide range of amenities which the town boasts. “We are delighted with the final product which we hope will go a long way to promoting the town in a positive manner as well as helping people to access the services and assistance they may need to make their lives a little easier.” The new site contains information on key services such as those available at the town’s Advice Centre, the Tourist Information Centre and via the Community Wardens. Information can also be found on town amenities such as the library, the twice weekly market, cemeteries and allotments. Beauty spots and tourist attractions such as the water meadows, Belle Vue Park, Gainsborough’s House Museum and the Quay Theatre are also featured on the site. Amusing anecdotal tales of the town’s civic history such as the 'fracas' during the Mayor's Banquet in 1895 involving the Godfrey Tankard can also be found. To view the new site go to www.sudburytowncouncil.co.uk

Hadleigh Show Saturday 17th May 2014 We Are 175 Years Old! The Hadleigh Farmers Club was established in December 1839 and initially held meetings every month alternating between the White Lion and White Horse Inns. It immediately had a lot of support from local farming families. The Hadleigh Farmers Club held shows and gave prizes to encourage and promote good farming. The first Hadleigh Show was in 1840 and they have been held either annually or twice yearly ever since, with the exception of the war years and in more recent times the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in 2001. We are already busy planning our 175th Show which will showcase modern farm machinery as well as remembering farming from times gone by, and there will be a display on Show day of photos and documents from our 175 year history. We would love to hear from you if you have any photos, videos or other memories from past shows that you would like to share. Please contact the secretary at secretary@hadleighshow.co.uk or 07584 568055. On our website www.hadleighshow.co.uk you can watch footage from the 1937, 1938, 1989 and 2006 shows. We will be filming this year’s show as well

You are getting very… healthy! When you hear the word hypnosis, do you think of swinging watches? Relaxing new age music? Volunteers thinking they’re Elvis? All of these things and more have been associated with hypnosis in various contexts and at various times, but they are just facets of something much more complex and subtle than that. Although people think they make their decisions entirely consciously, the subconscious mind controls and decides what the conscious mind experiences; in effect the subconscious mind creates what each of us perceives as reality. Hypnosis is really a means of communication with the subconscious mind, and if you can persuade the subconscious to change how it represents reality the conscious mind will happily step into line. Looked at in this way it’s obvious that hypnosis is a very versatile tool that can be used in myriad ways, which is why it has had so many different guises throughout history. What is Hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is simply the application of hypnosis in a therapeutic way, whether you’re trying to stop smoking, lose weight, cure a phobia or even make an area insensitive to pain for the purpose of an operation. Using hypnosis to communicate with the subconscious mind really can make these and many more things possible. Despite many years of misrepresentation in entertainment and in the media, hypnosis for therapy is rapidly growing in credibility because of an equally rapidly growing body of scientific evidence. Indeed, many medical professionals, including GPs, surgeons, psychiatrists and anaesthetists, now use hypnosis as an adjunct to their more mainstream approaches. They realise the fact that hypnosis is a fast, effective and safe way of engaging the subconscious mind as a powerful ally, and that can make their jobs easier and help them to be much more effective. Hypnosis in Sudbury Last year Benjamin Blake, proprietor of Sudbury Hypnosis completed training with world famous hypnotist Anthony Jacquin (Author of the best selling book “Reality is Plastic” and star of the Diesel Clothing Company’s “Magic of Christmas” commercials) “I’ve been successfully helping people with hypnosis for a number of years in my spare time, but training with Anthony has taken it to a whole new level, which is why I decided to go full time and open Sudbury Hypnosis.” Says Benjamin Sudbury Hypnosis provides hypnosis and hypnotherapy services to Sudbury and the surrounding area. Helping with issues from stopping smoking to losing weight to phobias and much more, hypnosis is a safe and 100% natural way to manage many conditions, with no side effects. Call Sudbury Hypnosis on 07967 473691 for a chat about hypnosis, hypnotherapy or how they can help you with your issue.
Our property team can work with you for a smooth and quick sale The local property market is buoyant once again and the property team at Gotelee is reflecting on a busy 2013 and looking forward to a bright and busy 2014. Catherine Abbott, Head of Property at Gotelee, comments “There is a lot to look forward to in 2014 with lower fees for Land Registry applications being announced, a consolidated approach from a number of lenders to panel memberships and so on. We never sit still in residential conveyancing these days, there’s always change and change for the better in most cases”. We have already seen growth in the number of clients that we have helped move into their new homes, covering the full spectrum from first time buyer through to the seasoned home owner, and we expect this trend to continue well into 2014. We are happy to see a significant increase in first time buyer clients as they are the key to getting the whole market moving. We understand that buying your first home is an exciting time but also that it can be a testing time for buyers. One of the biggest issues is whether you can afford to take the plunge. We have recognised this and Gotelee are running a competition on Facebook through to the end of February 2014. If you are successful in the competition, the prize is £500 off your professional conveyancing costs. This is a great opportunity for first time buyers to use Gotelee’s property team and experience first hand the level of service that we are well known for, and proud of, and benefit from the knowledge and experience of our teams based at both our Hadleigh and Ipswich offices. Please visit our page at www.facebook.com/goteleesolicitors for full details and a note of the terms and conditions. For details of the services that the property teams provide and a note of our fees please contact us at Hadleigh on 01473 822102 and at Ipswich on 01473 211121.

ChillOut Yoga comes to Sudbury ‘I’m not flexible, so I can’t do yoga’… There seems to be an assumption that to do yoga, you need to be able to touch your toes – but luckily for us ordinary, inflexible folk out there, this really is not the case! Although yoga has its roots in India, it has become very popular in the UK in recent years. There are so many good things about yoga – as we age we start to shrivel up like autumn leaves, and the stretching that yoga offers gets the body moving in all directions - so on a physical level yoga helps to improve your strength and flexibility – you will notice a difference very soon after starting a yoga class. Yoga helps prevent and relieve conditions such as back pain, arthritis, digestive issues … and as breath-work is a large part of a yoga class, it improves your breathing capacity and oxygen levels. Many health professionals are starting to recommend yoga, meditation and relaxation techniques as an antidote to stress – yoga is great at teaching our minds to quieten and teaches the body to relax – one of the aspects of yoga that most of us find the hardest! Brenda has been practicing yoga for 14 years, teaching yoga classes, meditation and relaxation for 7 years in Central Scotland. She recently moved to sunny Suffolk and is looking forward to starting yoga, meditation and relaxation classes to suit all abilities in Sudbury and Long Melford in February 2014. Brenda, who also runs ChillOut Yoga Teacher Training, has a hands-on, downto-earth approach to teaching yoga. She gives plenty of variations to the different postures, so all are welcome to come to her classes. She believes yoga is about how it feels, not how it looks… so it doesn’t matter how old you are, what shape you are (or are in), how flexible or not you are… yoga can be done by anyone – all you have to do is BE YOURSELF. If you would like to meet Brenda, book your place on one of her free Taster Sessions on Wednesday 29 January 2014 at The Granary, Sudbury (1011.30am) or The Old School, Long Melford (2-3.30pm), where she will introduce you to some of the different styles of yoga she teaches, chat about the benefits of yoga and meditation, answer any questions you may have so you can decide if any of the classes will suit you. Places are limited so please book! Wednesdays 9.30-11am - Sun & Moon Yoga@The Granary, Sudbury £6, Keep fit the Yoga way! Wednesdays 11.15-11.45am - Meditation@The Granary, Sudbury £3, Spend some time in various guided meditations from different traditions (Yoga, Buddhism, Zen, and the Western View) to find a meditation that suits you. Wednesdays 2-3.30pm - Chilled-Out Yoga @The Old School, Long Melford, £6, Different every week, from Yoga for Back Pain, Yin Yoga, BASE Yoga - special requests for themed classes welcome. Wednesdays 3.45-4.30pm - Relax! @The Old School, Long Melford £3, Enjoy different relaxation techniques, including Muscle Relaxation and Guided Visualisation. Thursdays 2 till 3.30pm - Gentle & Beginners Yoga @ The Jetty, Quay, Sudbury £6, Focussing on breath, gentle yoga postures and relaxation techniques, this class is ideal for beginners, those with limited range of motion or if you just need to de-stress. Information on Brenda’s classes are on www.chilloutyoga.co.uk, or give her a call or text on 07791 385240. Smile, breathe and go slowly
Tablet workshop No. 2 set for February 1 2014 A workshop to help users get to grips with new computer Tablets was booked up so quickly that the West Suffolk College Leap Centre in Sudbury is organising a second workshop in February. Following the popularity of the January event, the specially designed workshop will be repeated on Saturday 1 February 2014 at the Centre in Cornard Road, Sudbury from 10:00 to 15:30. The course costs £24, with concessions available. Tutor Len Cooper said: "The course may be low on 'tech talk' but it is high on content. Don't be fooled by the gentle pace of this five hour workshop; we are offering students a chance to really get to grips with their new tablet. Students will unravel features that they may not even have known about, which should enable them to get more from their device." While the course is primarily aimed at anyone owning a tablet running the Android 4.0 operating system (such as the Tesco Hudl, Samsung, Lenovo, Google Nexus and Sony Xperia) it will benefit new iPad users too, as the course will cover features common to both systems. Topics will include setting up the Tablet, using the Tablet to surf the net or to send and receive emails, social networking and Skype, downloading books and music and much more. If you know anyone who will be receiving a Tablet from Santa this Christmas, you could buy them a gift voucher for the workshop. For further information contact the Centre on 01787 880619 or visit the College's website www.westsuffolk.ac.uk There is a 5 per cent discount for enrolling online.

Peter Thorogood You Couldn’t Make It Up! The idiots really are running the asylum. The news that Paul Flowers, the Methodist minister chairing the Co-op Bank, has been filmed buying drugs probably does not come as a surprise to those who realise that our institutions and many of those running them are rotten to the core. However, Flower’s actions are even more distasteful than most. Not only did he purport to be a minister of the Church, sermonising to all that listened that we should uphold Christian values, but he also had the gall to be a director of the Lifeline Project which purports to help people tackle drug addiction. Yet another pillar of Society that we encourage our youth to respect and emulate! However, what beggars belief is the actions of those who appointed him to these roles. A church minister, with absolutely no experience of the world of finance, is placed in charge of one of our biggest banks whose ethical stance has encouraged thousands of decent citizens to invest. Now, after his watch, the Co-op bank is virtually worthless and requires the taxpayer to bail it out. And from those buffoons who placed him in charge, absolute silence! Will they be called to account to justify their crass misjudgement, don’t hold your breath. Yet another example of the establishment never admitting past errors. This same Establishment that, after decades, can find no senior police officer responsible for the deaths of hundreds at Hillsborough, and while the privates of the Parachute Regiment are likely to be charged regarding the shooting of innocent civil rights marchers on Bloody Sunday not a single senior officer has been named and shamed. Not one manager of the Staffordshire Health trust has been arrested following the unnecessary deaths of patients whilst nursing staff face enquiries and possible prosecution. Individual, overworked social workers are summarily dismissed following the deaths of children whilst their bosses obtain huge payouts through the courts. Does no one take the responsibilities annexed to their appointments seriously any more? In our grandfathers time honourable men would say “It shouldn’t have happened on my watch” and resigned. But occasionally there appears a glimmer of hope. The humble and wise actions taken by our newly appointed Pope Francis are proving a true example of leadership and wisdom. And like our own monarch maybe at last we have a world leader that we can have faith in and our youth can find inspiring. Who knows, his lifestyle and actions may shame our administrators to follow suit, but again, don’t hold your breath! Peter Thorogood Although Peter is Chairman of the Sudbury Society the views above are not necessarily the opinions of the Society.

Eastern Family Services - A Fostering Family’s View Following on from previous articles written by one of our fostering families we detail below the daughter’s thoughts on being a foster family. When my parents first approached me I don’t think I was quite aware what fostering actually entailed. Once my parents contacted EFS I started learning and thinking about what it would be like to have a foster child living with us. It made me think about how lucky I am to have had the upbringing I have had and I wanted to share that with someone who hasn’t been so lucky. I was allowed to attend some training at EFS which really helped me understand what fostering could be like. Mum and I were fortunate to meet the child prior to coming to live with us so we got a brief idea of what they would be like as a family member and they got a good idea of what we would be like. I had various discussions with EFS to see if I was really okay with fostering which was so reassuring. At first when I had friends over our foster child would not leave us alone so I told my mum I didn’t want anyone round again, but in the end I stuck with it. I can now have my friends over, and like with any kid, if you give them a bit of attention, they leave you alone after a while. Our foster child has also got better at socialising with my friends and now asks politely if they want to listen to them read, which my boyfriend does on most visits, which makes me so proud to see. The foster child is now truly part of our family and has progressed so much. I think the hardest part of the fostering experience were the times I had to watch our foster child being horrible to my mum. Those times were the only times I regretted the decision to foster, but after my mother stuck with it, after us as a family unit giving structure, routine and stability our foster child has now become the younger sibling I always wanted. We have our banter and they annoy the hell out of me sometimes, but it wouldn’t be natural if they didn’t, because with everything you have to take the bad with the good, and the good is us playing cards and laughing my socks off at their young humour. With fostering you get to watch someone else grow up and this makes you proud to help your new brother or sister have a happier life and a happy family. We hope you found this informative and if this has inspired you to find out more about fostering please look at our website www.easternfamilyservices.com or call us on 01206 299775 - we are more than happy to answer any questions you might have and help you think about whether fostering is right for you and your family

Escape to the Country Object Drive On March 1st 2014, the Museum of East Anglian Life will be opening Escape to the Country, a new exhibition that will explore why city dwellers left their urban homes to set up new lives in rural East Anglia in the 1970s. In November, the Museum asked people to tell them the objects they think represent the ‘Good Life’ in the 1970s and its legacy. We got all kinds of suggestions; from horse brasses to hookahs and Barsham Fairs posters to buckets. The Museum needs your help in finding these objects. Do you have some old gardening equipment that you don’t want? Maybe you’ve got some 70s clothes lurking in your attic that you could loan? The list of objects the Museum is looking for can be found on their website. The objects don’t need to be 1970s originals and there are even a few modern bits and pieces on the list. Do you have an object for our exhibition? Email Eleanor at the Museum at eleanor.root@eastanglianlife.org.uk or phone her on 01449 612229 to have a chat

Energy on Tap Limited Specialist in solar PV installations Hadleigh based, family business Fully trained, equipped and MCS accredited Committed to delivering the best possible service High levels of customer satisfaction
Energy On Tap Limited - Three things to consider before installing PV In recent weeks I have had a number of phone calls from people confused by claims made by companies promoting solar PV. Solar PV is an excellent investment and has many benefits, but it is not suitable for all properties. If you are thinking about installing a PV system then there are three things you need to consider. 1. Case studies are good, but be careful. Every house is different; different energy use, different heating systems, different construction, different orientation, different household demands, etc. To find out what is actually possible for your own property you need to get an MCS accredited PV installer to survey the property. A good installer will design the best, most effective system for your property and will be able to give you an accurate ‘predicted system output’ figure showing how much electricity you will be able to generate. remember - EVERY PROPERTY IS DIFFERENT. 2. Do your research. Speaking to more installers will educate you as to what is possible and will allow you to spot when one particular installer is making exaggerated claims or proposals. Remember, the system should be designed and installed to benefit the house not the PV company. If a PV installation will not benefit the property then the installer should be honest. GET MORE THAN ONE QUOTE. 3. Ask the installer for a reference or better still ask to visit a recent installation in the local area. This will not be a problem for a good company who pride themselves on giving a good service. Energy on Tap Limited have completed many installs in the Hadleigh and surrounding area and would be happy to take potential clients on a tour. The majority of our business is generated by ‘word of mouth’. ASK FOR REFERENCES.
APPROVED INSTALLER
Finally I met an Energy Assessor the other day who has inspected hundreds of houses all over the country. He told me that the one thing PV system owners always say is “I wish I had done it sooner”.

Orchard Barn Celebrates 6 years!
Page 3
Our 6th birthday was celebrated in some style on November 9 at Offton’s village hall. Musician and dance teacher Stefan Freedman, who teaches worldwide, called the dances which this year had a Breton style to them, helped by musicians Vicky and Anthony. OBee member Sue Reynard made a very tasty courgette birthday cake, big enough for all 60 of us to sample. Our annual fundraising activity at the party, the Auction of Promises, realised a fabulous £557.50, thanks to our enthusiastic auctioneer Stephen Conrad, the most sought after promise being the luxurious B+B in a summerhouse near South Cove in north Suffolk. Our volunteer numbers are increasing, with lots of lovely local people getting involved, and a total input of 858.5 days for the year. We have covered a great variety of practical projects, from applying wattle and daub to a lean-to roof, composting, apple picking and pressing (see photo of Laura and Kevin), deadwood fencing, hedge renovation and laying, gardening, door making, hinge making, bramble clearance, attending shows and fairs, loads of greenwood work and natural building, cob flooring. Over the winter months we are planning to cover hedge renovation & deadwood screening, green woodworking, basic carpentry and much more. We always have room for more volunteers, so if you are interested in doing practical work in a beautiful environment do get on touch, even if you have no previous experience of conservation work. Shop donations appeal to mark Hospice’s 25th Anniversary St Elizabeth Hospice is appealing to the local community to donate 25 items to their local Hospice shop to keep it stocked during the charity’s 25th anniversary year. St Elizabeth Hospice, which provides local Hospice care for local people, has 26 shops across East Suffolk and South Norfolk, and relies on the support of local people to keep their shops stocked. Sue Goodchild, St Elizabeth Hospice’s Head of Retail, said: “We receive such fantastic support from the local community, without people donating stock, and shopping in our shops, we wouldn’t be able to continue making a difference to people living with a progressive illness. “If you received any unwanted Christmas presents, or if you’ve updated your wardrobe or furniture this New Year, please consider donating your items to the Hospice. “This year the Hospice is marking its 25th anniversary, so if you want to get involved in our special anniversary year, why not donate 25 items, and help keep our shops stocked for the whole of 2014!” To donate stock such as bric-a-brac, books or clothes, drop them off at your nearest Hospice shop which you can find by visiting www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk If you would like to donate furniture, please do not drop it off at your nearest shop. Call 0845 259 0319 and someone will collect it from you. St Elizabeth Hospice costs £9.1million a year to run and it relies on the income generated from its shops as well as fundraising events and donations to meet the majority of these costs.

The four Ormiston Academy students – Izabela Pawlic, Caitlin Rawlinson, Darrell Barnard-Jones, Jake Thomas – have all recently completed their Local Councillor Shadowing Award accredited by the British Youth Council. The students had to undertake a minimum of 10 hours shadowing a councillor attending council meetings, surgeries and events and completing a log book to evidence their learning. The Awards were presented at the prestigious ceremony at the House of Commons on Monday 2nd December which was hosted by Sir Peter Bottomley MP. The Mayor, Cllr. Adrian Osborne and myself also attended the ceremony. Sudbury Town Council is very keen to involve young people and is hoping to recruit another four students to take part in the Award scheme next year. Jacqui Howells, Deputy Town Clerk

Sudbury Mayor’s Report Hello to you all and a very Happy and Healthy New Year. As you can imagine the lead up to Christmas was very busy with attending carol concerts and other events. Both Jan and I are now completely carolled and minced pie out. As alluded to last month the Town Council continues to work with Babergh, Suffolk County Council and other groups on joint initiatives and issues within Sudbury. It may sometimes appear that no progress is being made but some issues are beginning to get addressed and others are progressing well. I mention this again as it is very important that the people of Sudbury know that a great deal of work is going on to ensure that Sudbury remains a vibrant town to live, work, visit and play in. The Town Council’s new website is now up and running and I know that you will agree that it is now much more accessible and easier to navigate. Many thanks to all those involved. I am pleased that we now have a Town Centre Development Manager in place and congratulations to Jane Hatton. I am confident that Jane will work with the Town Council, together with the Town Team, to ensure the vibrancy of our wonderful Town. On behalf of the Town Council I would like to give a very big thank you to Timberscape and JPs Utilities Ltd. During the recent St Jude’s storm we lost many trees on the Croft and these two companies donated a whole day, together with equipment and resources, to help the Council clean up the trees and debris completely free of charge. The wood will be removed and sold with the proceeds going to the Mayor’s Charities. Many, many thanks to you for this very kind and generous community contribution. We are extremely grateful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people and organisations who have, to date, donated to my Mayoral Charities, which are McMillan Nurses, Compassion and Home Start. I will also be making contributions to some of Sudbury’s smaller Charities. I thank the following with my utmost thanks and appreciation: Waitrose, McDonalds, Country Casuals (Vyella) , W.H.Smith, The Mill Hotel, The Swan in Lavenham, The Back Lion in Long Melford, Banham Drive residents, Sainsburys and Pedlars. I apologise if I have missed anyone out but I will be reporting again in my next article. Please contact the Mayor’s Secretary at the Town Hall if you wish to make a contribution. On the 23rd November Jan and I attended the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Autumn Concert. As always it was most enjoyable. Well done to all involved and to those who attended the concert. On the 25th November both Jan and I was fortunate to be invited to a Celebration Evening for Lord Phillips of Sudbury at Essex University. Lord Phillips was Chancellor of the University of Essex for twelve years and this evening was to thank him for his hard work and contributions he made as Chancellor. It was a very entertaining evening and we both enjoyed ourselves immensely. Well done Andrew. The 27th November had me presenting awards at the Kumon Centre Advanced Student Awards Ceremony. Well done to you all. At the end of November I had the honour of switching on the Christmas Lights. It was wonderful to have so many people in the Town. Many thanks to Toby Bullock for his helping me to turn the lights on. Toby was the winner of the Mayor’s Christmas Card completion which was kindly sponsored by McDonalds. Also thanks to Deltaprint, Sudbury, for their support in allowing Toby to switch on the machine for the print run. He enjoyed this very much. Many of us have lost dear and precious relatives and friends and on the 1st December Jan and I attended the Light up Life 2013 in St Peters, a candlelit service of prayers and remembrance. It was a very moving and emotional service. I would like to thank all those involved, especially our wonderful Greg. As many of you are already aware the Town Council support the Shadowing a Councillor Scheme and have recently had four students shadowing 4 of the Town Council’s Councillors. Our Town Council are the only Council to participate in this Scheme from the East of England. The Students have now completed this and it was an honour to attend the Annual Awards Ceremony at the House of Commons on the 2 December, together with the students and the Deputy Town Clerk. It was a wonderful day and I am very proud of these young people. They are a credit to their parents and the Ormiston Academy. Well done to you all. On the 3rd December I opened the Christmas Tree Festival. When the lights go on I always feel transported into Fairy Land. It is, indeed, truly magical. This event takes a great deal of planning and time and a big thank you to the Rotary and all involved. Long may it continue.
On the 6th December Jan and I attended the West Suffolk Youth Orchestra and Wind Band Christmas Concert at Bury St Edmunds. It was truly wonderful and such talent in our young people. Well done. On the 7th December Jan and I attended the Festive Concert with the Stour Valley Singers. The concert was in aid of Sudbury Talbot Rotary Club and Compassion. Well done to all who organised and supported this event. The Hillside Special School held their Christmas Performance on the 9th December at the Ormiston Academy. This was wonderful and I give a big thank you all those involved. You do a fantastic job. On the 11th December the Town Council held its Christmas Lunch Party for our elderly residents. I hope all who attended enjoyed themselves. I know that Jan and I did. Well done to all those who organised this event. On the evening of the 11th December I attended the Haverhill Civic Carol Concert and a wonderful evening it was. Jan and I attended the Babergh Chairman’s Advent Civic Service at Lavenham Church. It was a Winners of the lovely service and all credit to the Christmas Window competition Lavenham Choir and the officers - Angelo Smith & Son for organising the event. Many thanks to all those who entered, voted and contributed to the prizes for the Christmas Window Competition. Also a special thanks to the Mercury for sponsoring this. I hope that we have even more entries next year. On the 14th December Jan and I went to the Catchpole Court Christmas Party, together with our Deputy Mayor Robert and his wife, Hilary. Again, a big thank you to all those who organised and supported this Highly Commended in the event. The evening of the 14th Christmas Window competition December had Jan and I singing - Wardale Williams carols at the Corn Exchange in Ipswich and on the 15th December singing more carols at the Civic Concert in Bury St Edmunds. On the 22nd December Jan and I attended the Sudbury Choral Society Christmas Concert. What a wonderful evening and well done to you all. December is always a time for joy but there are people who will be finding Christmas very difficult for one reason or another. I will be thinking of you all and remembering you in my prayers. I wish all our residents a very Happy and Healthy New Year, our retailers I wish you a prosperous New Year and our voluntary organisations a successful 2014. I will close now but look forward to seeing you all, Adrian

We would like to thank all of our customers for your continued support and wish you all a very happy new year.
Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre My system clock, being a mechanical horse, tells me it’s a new year, 2014……a blank canvas waits! So, a time perhaps to reflect on last year and those who get least mention, our team of Fund Raisers. They work very hard handling a duel function of Helper and Fund Raiser. Whilst they spend a considerable amount of time talking with present and future sponsors and liaising with donors, they also organise specific events which include The Countryside Walk, 52 walkers took part; our stall at The Hadleigh Show; The Long Distance Ride with a record 104 riders taking part; a Quiz Night which was attended by some 100 people who also enjoyed a Fish ‘n Chip Supper. From these events alone The Centre raised over £7,300 toward its upkeep. Furthermore, two Super Market Chains namely, The East of England Co-op and Waitrose have also supported us with in-store token schemes raising in excess of £2,700. We were also fortunate to secure sums from two other major sponsors who were AXA Insurance via the Suffolk Community Foundation which provided a Grant enabling us to purchase much needed equipment such as riding helmets and special saddles: again, Suffolk County Council via the Suffolk Community Foundation awarded The Centre a ‘Working Together’ Grant of £10,000 which has gone toward meeting the cost of our Stable Manger’s Salary. Obviously, we are also very grateful to receive individual donations of which there are many and bequests. However, there is generosity through individuals and Guy Brooks, a parent of one of our Riders, Mia, took part in the gruelling Kindrochit Quadrathon in Scotland which resulted in a donation of £6,559.87, which must have involved much hard work in training and preparation for such an event. And finally, in summarising our Fund Raising it is important to mention, and thank, the parents of Michael Jordan from Acorn Village who made a donation to Sponsor a Pony in memory of Michael who, sadly, died suddenly last Autumn; he is greatly missed by his friends of the Wednesday morning group with whom he rode for some 15 years. If you would like to support us why not look up the Events Calendar for 2014 on our Website and note the dates in your Diary now! Well, for me and BABS it’s back to work, with our services more in demand at this time of year: I suspect our Fund Raisers also have their heads down rising to the challenge of funding The Shelley Centre for another year. Case Study, Mr Dave Melton - Firetrace Ltd We hope that everyone has had a very merry Christmas and New Year. This month our article will look at two other types of customer; the commercial customer, and the landlord. Our case study for this month is Mr Dave Melton, and his business Firetrace Ltd, which is situated on Knightsdale Road in Ipswich. Dave has had a 10kw system - 42 Solar panels - installed by us on his business premises, and subsequently has had us Greenscape Energy installation at install systems at several homes Firetrace Ltd, which is situated on that he rents out around the Knightsdale Road in Ipswich. Ipswich area. Dave told us that he had been looking at Solar for a little while, and had been contemplating having it installed on his business premises. After meeting with us, and having us go through the various benefits of it with him, he decided that it was most definitely worth investing in, as the returns on Solar outperformed any savings account or ISA, in any bank in the UK at the time. Dave’s business, Firetrace Ltd, is quite a heavy user of Electricity, as on top of the constant lighting required on the premises and the air conditioning for the offices, they have a number of larger pieces of engineering machinery that are expensive to run, but essential to the business. In Dave’s own words “There isn’t a day that goes by where we don’t consume more than the Solar panels generate”, such is the cost of running a modern business. In fact the only day where any electricity generated is being fed back into the National Grid is Sunday, as the business is closed, and even then the staff put whatever battery powered electrical equipment they have on charge for a day! In short, Dave has maximised the savings on his electricity bills for his business, by using nearly 100% of the power his system generates. This is of course on top of the income he receives from the Feed-In Tariff. From a commercial point of view, this is the perfect scenario. If a family install a system on their home, they will struggle to use even three quarters of the power that they generate, yet if a business that is a heavy electricity user can not only add an additional income stream in the form of the Feed-In Tariff, but can also use 90-100% of whatever their system generates, then they have
considerably reduced their overheads, something all businesses are constantly reviewing. In summary, a Solar PV system installed on business premises can be a very lucrative prospect indeed. As we mentioned earlier, Dave has also had us install Solar PV systems on several homes he owns and rents out around the Ipswich area. As the owner of the house, Dave will still receive the Feed-In Tariff payments for each property, meaning that as a landlord he now has an additional income on top of the rent payments to help cover any maintenance costs etc. The tenants living in the properties receive the free electricity. Dave told us that in his experience, this made his tenants very happy as they were paying quite a bit less than other people in terms of utility bills, and also that he found it made properties considerably easier to rent in the first place, as potential tenants were very interested in the fact that the house had Solar panels. This ties in with a survey conducted by Martin Lewis, and his website www.moneysavingexpert.com, who discovered that homes with Solar panels receive a third more views than homes without panels, when on the market. Again this is logical, as a home with Solar panels has an income attached to it for a number of years, and will be considerably cheaper to run than a home without Solar, and this gap will only grow as the Energy prices continue to go up. If you would like to find out more about Solar, for us to advise you on what the best Solar solution could be for your home, or to simply get some further information and a free, no-obligation quotation, please get in touch with our friendly team today, we’ll be more than happy To find out more please call 01473 655655 www.greenscapeenergy.co.uk

A helpline that provides support to people with dementia, their carers and loved ones across Suffolk will be extending its operational hours from Monday 16th December, so that the service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The dementia helpline, which was launched in September 2012 provides a service during office hours of; information, signposting and emotional support to anyone concerned about dementia. The new extension of the service offers emotional support and a listening ear from 5pm-9am and at weekends and, importantly, over Bank Holidays. Fiona Hanlon, Lead Helpline Coordinator at Sue Ryder, commented: “It is not easy when someone you care for shows signs of dementia. People often don’t know how to talk about it, or know what help might be available. Since the helpline was launched we have supported over 500 callers. Now with extended hours, callers can access support whenever they feel they need it.” The helpline is managed and coordinated by health and social care charity Sue Ryder, under the umbrella of The Suffolk Dementia Partnership (a partnership of Age UK Suffolk, Suffolk Family Carers, Sue Ryder and The Alzheimer’s Society.) Few support services are available outside normal working hours and the dementia helpline is able to support people when they want to talk things through. The Dementia Partnership for Suffolk aims to increase awareness amongst local communities, of the symptoms of dementia, to support early diagnosis and intervention, as well as providing support and advice through a network of services.

Greenest County Awards 2014 Now in their seventh year the Greenest County Awards 2014 were launched last night at Birchwood Primary School in Martlesham, winners of the 2013 Champion of Champions public vote award. The Creating the Greenest County Awards is an annual event which highlights the excellent environmental achievements going on across Suffolk, celebrating the huge number of inspirational people, businesses, communities, schools and projects across the county. The Awards 2014 sees the introduction of the Public Vote award, which this year will be Greenest Community Project. This award will celebrate a community or a group of local volunteers who are working together to improve their surrounding environment, raising environmental awareness and making a difference to others. The final shortlist will then be put to a public vote. You can nominate yourselves, or nominate a group which has inspired you. Just make sure you enter! Councillor Richard Smith, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Planning and the Environment said “I am happy to be supporting the Creating the Greenest County Awards. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the inspirational work that is going on in Suffolk’s businesses, schools and communities and encourage others to follow in their green footsteps. I would also like to thank our sponsors who make the Awards possible.” For further information on each category and information on how to enter visit www.greensuffolk.org/awards2014. The closing date for entries is the 31 January 2014 with winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 28 March 2014. Natural Environment Update Have you ever wondered what some of Suffolk’s rarest species look like, such as the fancy-legged fly, or the Brush-thighed seed-eater? Did you know that Suffolk has 262 priority species, which make up the Suffolk Biodiversity Action Plan? These species are of principal importance for the purpose of conserving biodiversity in Suffolk. Suffolk’s Biological Record Centre has developed an amazing online photo library of all these species here. Following an extensive consultation with partners and the public earlier this year, Suffolk Biodiversity Partnership has reviewed its work and more clearly defined its future focus. The aim now is to provide guidance on Suffolk’s priority habitats and species to those organisations with associated statutory responsibilities, such as local authorities and other statutory undertakers, including utility companies. For further information about the new approach please see here. The Stage 2 submission for the £2m HLF-funded project in the Brecks, Breaking New Ground, has now been submitted to HLF. We will hear on March 6th if we have been successful. The project aims to conserve and enhance built and natural heritage as well as increase engagement and understanding. It will also provide training opportunities in heritage skills. The development of Sizewell C should be an ‘environmental exemplar’ on the Suffolk coast, was the message that came through in an article published this month. The East Anglian Daily Times reported on work to develop Design Principles undertaken by a collaborative of environmental organisations working with Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council. Suffolk Biodiversity Partnership’s guidance in relation to bats and small wind turbines, which uses an easy-to-follow flow chart format, has been picked up as far away as India. The Bombay Natural History Society has asked to use the guidance, as they develop Terms of References for impact of wind turbines on birds and bats for the Government of India. The Suffolk guidance is available here. The first round of the Suffolk Coast’s HLF-funded Touching the Tide community grants have been awarded. Successful projects included; the Felixstowe coastal rescue patrol service, fencing and interpretation to protect little tern colonies, sailing for children with disabilities and restoration of an historic memorial. See here for more information. Urban green infrastructure is a network of green spaces, water and other natural features within urban areas. Green infrastructure delivers multiple functions, such as reducing flood risk and cooling high urban temperatures. A new POSTnote summarises research evidence of the effectiveness of green infrastructure, and the challenges to its implementation. Defra has announced that 27 new Marine Conservation Zones have been created to help better protect our rich marine life, 22 inshore and 5 offshore. The Stour and Orwell estuaries, although proposed for designation, were not amongst those to be designated at this time. Suffolk Biological Records Centre is trialling a new method of creating maps from remote sources, such as aerial photography. This method utilises the power of photo editing and open source mapping software to pick out changes in ground cover and convert them to mapped areas. It is currently being trialled for monitoring the change of vegetated areas on Orford Ness over time.

Phil Barlow, Carol Durston, Chris Williams, Phil Barlow & Andy Dodds A recent recipient of the British Empire Medal has received a standing ovation from senior members at his local golf club at an annual event he founded. Andy Dodds received the Queen's Birthday Award for services to Sudbury Cricket Club, where he has been a Jack of all trades, and his nomination was also supported by Newton Green Golf Club, where he has been a similar stalwart. Nineteen years ago he launched the Andy Platter, a Christmas competition for senior men at Newton, but recently handed over responsibility to other colleagues. He was able to take a back seat for this year's event, and received an ovation for his past services. The club did not have a senior section when he started the platter, but it will now be taken over by the seniors and become a spring time tournament. This year's event featured a sprinkling of women players for the first time, and ladies' captain Carol Durston was invited to present the awards. Club men's captain Chris Williams was winner on count back with 36 points from Mick Barlow and, in third place, Phil Barlow 32. Di Cunningham won the competition for women.

Councillor John Sayers and TGA support Local Care Home At Catchpole Court we have been working closely with Councillor John Sayers, and Rachel Eiding from TGA in getting a VIP515 High Back Wheelchair with adjustable legs. John Sayers agreed to fund £734.00 from his Locality Budget and TGA are also supporting this project, donating a large discount. Have the courage to leave ‘The Shires’ By ex-punk rocker Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church How do you start a New Year? I mean that in a philosophical sense. Beyond the alcohol detox and rash gym membership purchase, how are you looking to approach 2014? The king’s advice to Alice in Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s book is a good place to start as any: “Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end.” I like that pragmatic approach. We all like a party on New Year’s Eve, but beyond the Hokey Cokey it is just a way of seeing the end as a beginning. Nothing changes at midnight, apart from the date. Yet, 2014 could be the year that everything changes. You may be aware that part two of Peter Jackson’s film of The Hobbit is now out. Recently I watched the first one again to put me in the mood. The world of the hobbit is a very safe and confortable place where nothing extraordinary ever happens, not least to Bilbo Baggins. However, his life changes when a grey wizard by the name of Gandalf comes visiting: “I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it's very difficult to find anyone.' The response by the hobbit is sniffy: “I should think so — in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!” Yet Gandalf, and the company of dwarfs, cause him to assess his cosy, predictable life, leading to unexpected feelings being stirred up from within. We see him catch up with the departing dwarfs. Albeit unprepared and without a clean pocket handkerchief. Change can be good or bad, but one thing is for sure, change is here to stay. Nothing stays the same, whether we are hobbit or human. Gandalf disrupted Bilbo’s life to recruit him for a greater cause – to serve the needs of others and put himself last. This is not dissimilar to Jesus’ call upon a Christian’s life. For those of us who have decided to put our faith in Jesus we have committed ourselves to an adventure bigger than ourselves. And an exciting one it is too! It is why we have as our church’s slogan “For a life less ordinary.” Part of that journey at Stour Valley Vineyard Church has seen the start of Storehouse Foodbank in Sudbury, which has now seen a number of other groups join us. We have taken up the invitation to put our faith in Jesus. That has meant, in short, leaving the safety of “The Shires”. We have seen many lives wonderfully transformed, along with new beginnings. It is a spiritual journey that changes us forever. Bilbo Baggins saw himself as nothing out of the ordinary. We may feel the same. But to God we are special and most definitely loved. Furthermore, we shouldn't underestimate our own worth. As Gandalf said, “I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay... small acts of kindness and love.” Come and visit us sometime in 2014. A very happy and peaceful New Year to you. Stour Valley Vineyard is a growing family church. It meets on Sunday morning at 10.30am in the Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury. (First Sunday at 6.30pm only). Details for Storehouse Foodbank available at: www.stourvalleyvineyard.org.

A replica of an iconic hut used by the world’s longest serving golf club professional is to be recreated as a starter’s shelter. The structure will be positioned beside the first tee at Newton Green Golf Club, where Arthur Davey served for 60 years, until 1979. His little hut beside the main A134 SudburyColchester road became part of the heritage of both the club, and the village, from which the club takes its name. The original structure is now a rotting hulk beneath a canopy of ivy, but was the nerve centre of the club in its former ninehole days. Davey was a legendary figure who walked a few yards from his cottage in the village to his job tending the course, taking green fees, making clubs and giving golf lessons. He was admired for his self-effacing benevolence and diffident charm. A group of enthusiasts are working with the club to complete the project at a cost of £4,000. Newton Green has one of the most successful junior sections in East Anglia, and through various initiatives is attracting a lower than normal age profile of golfers. Chairman Peter Philpott said: “As well as bringing young people into the sport, we believe it is important they appreciate local history and the heritage of the club. The shelter will feature an illustrated panel explaining its relevance to both the club and the village of Newton.” In addition to its role as a starter’s A 1960s picture of president Roly shelter, the building will be used for Oliver (left) and Arthur Davey outside serving snacks and drinks on the professional's hut major competition days, and much needed storage space. Because of other priorities, the club has decided the project must be self-financing through private subscription. Arthur Davey died at Newton, aged 97, in 1992.

A Happy New Year and a great big Thank You from everyone at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare for supporting us in 2013. We are indebted to the Public, the Volunteers, businesses and the media (including this excellent publication) for all their invaluable help. Too many to mention by name but you all know who you are! Visitors will be aware that much hard work was put in during the year around the Sanctuary. Kennels were repaired, sheds made watertight and the main cattery was completely refurbished. The Fundraisers also kept busy, right up to December. The Annual Raffle made £1000 and a further £845 was raised at the Christmas Fair. One morning when all the activity had died down and I lay toasting by the fire, the girls read out some chilling facts from a recent report.Apparently, in the year ending 31st March 2013, nearly 112,000 stray dogs were handled by Local Authorities across the UK.Over 5400 of those were in the Anglia region, 388 of which were put to sleep. Without the help of welfare organisations that figure would have been higher. Some of my best friends were minutes from being destroyed before they came to SESAW including a pregnant crossbreed. The lovely Lily presented us with a bakers dozen within a week of arrival. Please think carefully before giving an animal a home. Unlike human children, we depend upon you our whole lives. If you are prepared to make the commitment, ensure your new pet is vaccinated, micro-chipped and neutered. All those dogs waiting to be put down were once adorable puppies. Just between you and me, the same goes for cats, but I didn't tell you that! After all, although small, I am a dog and have to maintain my reputation as Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. SESAW, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP

Christmas Tree Festival pulls in the crowds Once again the organisations, charities, schools and businesses of Sudbury have joined together to make the Christmas Tree Festival a wondrous success. Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Sudbury and Sudbury Talbot the crowds poured in to see the beautiful trees decorated in so many inventive ways. The spirit of Christmas had arrived. The Rotary Clubs are pleased to announce that a total of just over £4000.00 was raised for the six chosen local charities which will be divided equally between them after expenses. Those who will benefit are: Action for Children, Age UK Chilton Care Centre, Eden-Rose Coppice Trust, Hillside Special School, Sudbury Newstalk and Suffolk Wildlife Trust together with the Friends of St. Peter’s who care for this wonderful venue which so enhances this event. The two presidents Lynda Sebbage of RC Sudbury and Val Tyrrell of RC Sudbury Talbot agreed they were pleased to be able to support so many local charities in their work in the community.
