01787 313677 or 07966 371963 An estimated 6,000 people spent the day in the sunshine on Sunday as visitors piled in to enjoy this year’s Taste of Sudbury. Sixty two stalls filled Market Hill and St Peter’s church selling a whole range of products including a wonderful selection of cooked food and street food. Prosecco and cold beer was flowing from bars provided by Stock and Bailey, The Long Melford Swan and The Duck and Coot and everyone enjoyed music by The Three Chordettes on the slabs in front of St Peters’s. Cooking demonstrations took place all day in the kitchen theatre marquee with a line-up of some of Suffolk’s very best chefs including Scott Taylor from the ICE Cookery Experience, James Carn of The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds, Oliver Macmillan from The Long Melford Swan and Lee Fernandez of Rafi’s Spicebox and over six hundred Dim Sums were cooked (and eaten!) on the KSL Kitchen Stand inside the church. This year the event was organised by award winning local business Suffolk Market Events owned by Justine Paul, whose aim was to deliver a top quality Mark David with a chef from the event with a real focus on locality and Long Melford Swan quality of product. She said: “We are thrilled at how well yesterday’s event went. The weather was perfect and we couldn’t have asked for a better turnout. I really wanted to see Sudbury stamped on the Foodie Map and I believe, wholeheartedly, that the success of yesterday has well and truly achieved this. Yesterday really was Sudbury at its best. ’ A number of traders at the event reported significant increases in sales compared to 2016 and all the stallholders were delighted with the day. Justine continued: “It has been so lovely today to receive constant messages full of fantastically positive feedback from traders, members of the public, sponsors and chefs and we would like to say a huge thank you to all those who participated, attended and helped on the day including Go Start Community Transport, Gryphon First Aid, a group of fabulous volunteers and the town wardens. It is a pleasure to be able to provide such a fantastic, top quality event with no admission charge and I would like to thank all our sponsors, including our headline sponsor, The Long Melford Swan, for helping to make this possible.” Work will soon be starting on next year’s Taste of Sudbury and gaining more sponsorship will be one of the priorities so if any local businesses would like to get involved, please do contactSuffolk Market Events on 07704 627973

Clopton Rose Ceremony In 1436 William Clopton, Lord of Toppesfield Manor, granted land for a Guildhall and market to the Town of Hadleigh, the rent to be one red rose per annum. In 1983 Gene Clopton discovered that rent was 500 years in arrears. The people of Hadleigh duly paid up, but because of their past history of payment, Gene demanded that the rent be paid in advance henceforth and this has been done ever since. On Trinity Sunday each year during the morning service at Long Melford Church, the Mayor of Hadleigh puts a single red rose on the tomb of Sir William Clopton, which lies at the back of Long Melford Holy Trinity Church, as rent payable for the Town Hall Complex. This is considered to be the oldest payment of rent anywhere in the country. The photograph shows Hadleigh Town Mayor, Councillor Yvonne Free, accompanied by her Deputy, Councillor Bill Wilson, the Rector of Holy Trinity Church Rev’d. Matthew Lawson and the Chairman of the Long Melford Parish Council, Councillor Liz Malvisi at this year’s service.

The benefits of an amicable separation The end of a marriage or relationship is a tough time for everyone, particularly when finances need to be split and agreed and where children are involved. There are benefits to all parties involved if this can be dealt with in an amicable way. You need to consider the relationship you wish to have with your ex-partner and their family together with any ongoing contact you may have regarding your children. Clearly if you keep matters during separation as amicable as possible any future relationship and contact with each other will be so much easier. Benefits for children Children adapt well to change but not to hostility between their parents. Whilst it is upsetting for them to see their parents no longer together, they will want them to be happy and if you can remain on good terms with each other your children will benefit. It will ensure any decisions that need to be made about, or for, the children will be much easier. Minimise your legal costs Legal costs can often be a real concern to parties when deciding whether to commence divorce proceedings. Remaining amicable keeps costs to a minimum as it is the arguing and potential delays that often costs the money in respect of legal fees. If you can reach your own agreement, then you remain in control of your financial future and your divorce solicitor can make sure this is a fair settlement. Make it legally binding It is important to place any financial agreement into a Court Order which is often referred to as a Consent Order. This is a legally binding agreement and ensures that both parties are committed to what has been decided during the separation. If there is no Consent Order in place then either party can make a financial claim against the other even after you have divorced. This is the case until either party remarries. It is therefore incredibly important to make sure any agreement is placed into a Court Order to avoid any arguments in the future perhaps, when new partners are on the scene. Get expert advice on divorce or separation At Holmes & Hills solicitors we are committed in moving forward with an amicable and non-confrontational approach, to help you through the process of separation. AGM at Sudbury Library The Friends of Sudbury Library held their first Annual General Meeting on the 24th May. We were delighted that the Chief Executive Office of Suffolk Libraries was our speaker. Alison Wheeler pointed out that there are difficult times ahead for Suffolk Libraries with the financial support from the County Council being reduced again this financial year. The good news was that at present time there will be no library closures in Suffolk unlike some other neighbouring counties. The Friends continue to support the Library Staff but emphasised the need for an injection of more Committee members with some fresh ideas. The Committee are planning a programme of talks for the Autumn to include travel and food. The next event at the Library is a quiz on the 7th July at 7pm, tickets available from the Library at a very reasonable £3, bring your own refreshments. The Reading scheme will be taking place as usual in the Library during the summer break the subject this year is Animal Agents. Another exciting event in the Summer will be the launch of a Short Story Competition, a 500 word short story open to children 6-13 years, rules and entrance form available at the Library for £1. The competition is sponsored and a book will be produced by The Lavenham Press. The winners will receive a copy signed by the famous author Anthony Horowitz, who will also write the foreword. The Library is vital to the life of Sudbury please support it in anyway you can

Margaret Moore, of Sudbury, has written A Street of Secrets, where support among the street's residents is invaluable. Set in the East End of London, Angel Street is home to a variety of characters, who live close together, sharing each other's joys, tears, and lives. Ethel's collision with Stan's bicycle raises eyebrows. Why do Stan's solicitors insist on involving the rent collector, in his affairs? Then there is Rose, who appears to be teaching the vicar some of her old ways. When Churchy and Liz decide to investigate, they find more than they bargained for. The next vicar comes as another shock. Meanwhile young Tony is unwittingly apprenticed to burglars, causing problems for one or two other local residents. The new neighbour is a real eye-opener, and what about the mystery lady who stands watching on the corner? She says: “I wrote this book in the timespan of my childhood because it was such an interesting time. I have created fictional characters which made these streets safe for me and my friends and they were thought of as extended family. Those streets hadn’t escaped the bombs and the problems of rationing were still being tackled, but the attitude always stayed in my memory. Those people you can’t forget.” Margaret Moore was born in the East End of London during the war years. Leaving school at the age of 15 with no qualifications she took further education to achieve the skills of a secretary during this career spanning 37 years, she worked as a legal secretary in London, Essex, and Suffolk, retiring in 2006. She began her writing career with a children's book. She lives in Suffolk with husband Norman. They have two sons, two grandsons and two great grandchildren. A Street of Secrets is published by Austin Macauley, please visit www.austinmacauley.com for more information

New Business Launches in Sudbury to tackle rural isolation amongst the older generations A new business has launched in Sudbury to help provide a better quality of life and combat rural isolation in later life. 1 Oak Home Care was created by local resident Angel Doyle. Angel identified a real lack of holistic care for older people in the community and set about remedying that. After researching and spending time working with the Care Quality Commission to gain their approval, the company is now active and seeking clients in Sudbury and surrounding areas. With a background in training for the health and social care industry, Angel noticed a need for an organisation to tackle the growing problem of isolation in rural areas. According to Suffolk Age UK, over 15,000 people over the age of 65 in Suffolk are often or always lonely. That’s 1 in 10 people. Angel says: “The team at 1 Oak feel passionately about delivering high quality care and beating isolation. So much of the time we hear of inadequate quality when it comes to the care of our loved ones. With a population of aging people the quality of care delivered is more important now than ever before.” “Although there are many good providers who offer basic care for their clients, we aim to go above and beyond, supporting both the persons needs and wants. What 1 Oak Care is looking to do is offer services that contribute to a much better quality for life. The care we offer to our clients is extended to our staff, we treat staff as if they were our own family and support them in every aspect of their career” 1 Oak has been joined by Theresa Street who has 20 years’ experience as a qualified nurse and brings a wealth of clinical knowledge in many different care settings. Theresa has the same passion and drive to bring highly personalised care to the community as in her words “There is nothing more important than leading a fulfilling life, if we can support that then we consider ourselves privileged to serve the community in a holistic way”. Combatting isolation in Sudbury and rural areas is one of the 1 Oak family’s goals. 1 Oak plans include social invitations, accessible events and supporting truly independent living, encompassing real quality of life. 1 Oak Care are offering everything from regular personal & respite care, to home maintenance and organisation. They will also organise day trips and local social events to encourage friendship and prevent loneliness. 1 Oak Care has joined forces with a local hairdresser and a dog walker, both fully DBS checked and they are looking to work with other local businesses, who can contribute to the quality of life of their clients. Work to restore the prominent clocks on the tower at St Peter’s church in Sudbury town centre was completed this week as craftsmen added the final layer of gilding to the clock faces. This concluding phase brings to a close a restoration project that has taken several years and provides the town with a church clock tower to be proud off. The work has been carried out by a team of experts from Norwich-based Michlmayr which has a national reputation for its horological services. The project was overseen by Sudbury Town Council in collaboration with the Friends of St Peter’s (FOSP), the charity responsible for looking after the 14th century church located in Market Hill. Sudbury Council town clerk Jacqui Howells said: “The Town Council is very pleased that the work to refurbish and repair the clock faces on St Peter’s has now been completed. St Peter’s church is an iconic landmark and many people will have missed the regular chimes of the clock and looking up to check the time. The church and clock tower are an important asset in the town.â€? FOSP heritage officer Roger Green added: "We have the Town Council to thank for collating the many and varied arrangements that have finally brought us to this point. “The Friends of St Peter’s have offered their contribution towards the cost in memory of the late Tony Wheeler. Those who knew Tony will remember that his house was well supplied with clocks. I hope that the golden faces, glowing in the sunshine, will remind us all of his engaging smile. "The great tower of St Peter's is impossible to ignore and will now appear as even more impressive.â€? St Peter’s has become established as a hub for events in Sudbury including farmers markets, art exhibitions, music concerts, Thursday’s popular Kettle and Fish cafĂŠ and the annual Christmas tree festival. The venue attracts around 60,000 visitors every year, making it one of the most used redundant churches in the UK. To find out more about events coming up at St Peter’s visit www.stpetersudbury.co.uk

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I was extremely grateful to have received such a strong mandate from the voters of South Suffolk at the recent general election. Achieving over 60% of the vote, the highest share in the constituency's history, was something I would not have dreamed of. However, I am fully aware that this is only a time limited mandate, and there is now a duty for me to deliver and keep working hard as your Member of Parliament. It looks like I will continue to serve South Suffolk against a national backdrop of seemingly never-ending Westminster drama. The cause of this latest bout of unplanned intrigue was an election result that few had predicted when Theresa May surprised the nation, including myself, in announcing that she would go to the country. But the one lesson I have learned as an MP is that nothing is predictable anymore. And so we face a Hung Parliament, and at the time of writing, talks with the Democratic Unionist Party are progressing about coming to some kind of arrangement for them to support us. I would emphasise that the DUP have previously entered into talks with other Governments who were not sure of their majority, most notably Gordon Brown's Labour Government. If it turns out that they do commit to some kind of agreement it is unlikely to be a full coalition and it does not mean for one minute that we are endorsing all of their views or policies. Rather, it is a fact that the country requires a Government and we have a duty to find a way to provide stability amidst the current uncertainty. Of course nobody wanted this outcome but politics is about facing up to the reality of one's position and dealing with it. That is what we are doing. We must not forget that our country is confronted by a heightened level of terror threat and imminent Brexit negotiations which will be extremely challenging. It is simply not possible to proceed confidently as a people without a Government able to do its core job of stewarding the nation from day to day.
Cornard Dynamos’ first five-a-side tournament for many a year was a roaring success... There were competitions for all youth age groups with teams playing a minileague format before the highest placed went through to a semi-final and final match. Teams visiting Blackhouse Lane included Tiptree, Stanway Villa, Colchester Villa and St Edmunds. There were some impressive showings from a number of Dynamo teams and one of the Under-9s teams ended up winning their age group (see pic attached). The club received many compliments about how well organised the event was and newly refurbished kitchen was busy across both days of the event. The fantastic weather also helped to make the event one to remember. Well done to everyone involved.

Drive to get Suffolk children reading for pleasure behind surge in youngsters enjoying books The number of youngsters who say they enjoy reading is at its highest level for more than a decade, a survey has found – and libraries in Suffolk believe schools in the county have played a big part locally. The National Literacy Trust’s Annual Literacy Survey was published yesterday, and revealed that 58.6% of youngsters said they enjoyed reading very much or quite a lot – the highest percentage since the survey began in 2005. The annual Summer Reading Challenge is expected to attract thousands of children to sign up across Suffolk and Essex, while sessions in both counties tailored to young toddlers and their parents helps get youngsters involved from an early age. Improvements to special education needs plans in Suffolk - but parents say more still needed A damning report into Suffolk’s support for children in greatest need is said to have brought improvements – but for some families the situation remains far from satisfactory. Suffolk authorities were told to issue a “statement of action” in February detailing how they will tackle areas of “significant weakness” relating to the Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND) reforms of 2014. Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission found the needs of many children were not being met, highlighting “dissatisfaction, frustration and confusion” of families trying to access services. Many faced difficulties getting education, health and care (EHC) plans – a cornerstone of reforms. Suffolk County Council and clinical commissioning groups said changes introduced after the data had been collected made it “easier and quicker” to access support. The authorities said production of EHC plans “more than doubled” last year and the target rate reached 82% in April. A campaign by Suffolk County Council is hoping to educate young people to keep safe on Suffolk’s roads The campaign, RoadSafe, which launched at the Suffolk Show at Trinity Park, hosted talks, demonstrations, workshops and a virtual reality simulator to help raise awareness of road dangers. Nationally, per mile ridden, motorbike riders in Suffolk, are around 38% more likely to be killed in a road traffic collision than those in cars. In 2015, 215 motorcyclists were injured in Suffolk. Suffolk Roadsafe Partnership, alongside Suffolk Hugger, has launching the #AskEmRider campaign to tackle the issue of young inexperienced motorbike riders and help them improve their skills to become better and safer riders. #AskEmRider, follows 19-year-old Needham Market apprentice Emma Walker’s journey from learner rider to passing her test, with short videos online offering tips to help her – and other young riders - become safer. Anyone with questions about motorbike safety can get involved by asking a question on Twitter using the hashtag #askEmrider.

Sudbury Rotary Club News The middle of the year is an important time in the Rotary Calendar as this is when the current President hands over to the President for 2017-18. So on 3rd July Mike Killoran will be handing over the reins to Lesley Platt at a special lunch to be held at the Mill Hotel. To add to the festivities we have invited a Welsh harpist living in Upminster to entertain us. I reported last time on our annual Prom Concert which was held in May. There were fewer in the audience this time, perhaps because another organisation had put on a similar type of concert only weeks before us, which was a pity because those not attending lost the opportunity to hear the excellent and inspiring Colchester Military Wives Choir. Former members, Peter and Valerie Goodchild (Sudbury and Sudbury Talbot Rotary Clubs respectively) moved to Northern Ireland a few years back and joined the Rotary Club at Donaghadee near Bangor, County Down. In the early years of migration from Lowland Scotland to Ireland, Donaghadee was the main port, long before nearby Larne became a ferry terminal. Some members of the Sudbury Club paid a visit there recently and received a very warm welcome. The annual Cricket Club lunch takes place on 24th July and the chairman of trustees of Sudbury CAB will be talking to us on 31st July. With the Rotary year beginning on 1st July, we have a new District Governor, Robert Lovett and he has been invited to our meeting on 7th August. Later in that month, one of our own members, Glyn Jones, will be talking about TWAM and if you are wondering what that means you will have to join us on 21st August. So, why not join us for some of these lunches on Mondays at 12.30pm for 1pm at the Mill Hotel. Just let us know in advance and in any case if you would like more information about our club and our activities please contact our secretary Roger Green on 07341 290415 or look us up on our website www.sudburyrotary.com or simply Google Sudbury Rotary Club Rotarian Tony Platt

SMART Alarms Why buy an ordinary burglar alarm when you can have a smart home alarm system? Smart alarms are the burglar alarm system of today. They do everything an ordinary burglar alarm system can do, and a lot more besides. Like a traditional home alarm, they can be set and unset by entering a unique user code in the alarm keypad or simply presenting a key fob to the keypad. They can also be programmed to sound the external siren, contact an alarm receiving centre, or alert you when activated, if required. So what is the smart part? Amongst many other great features, the motion detectors in a smart alarm can have a camera built in which takes a sequence of snap shots when the alarm is activated and sends those images instantly to your smartphone. Let’s assume for a moment that, like us, you sometimes forget things; did I lock the back door, did I switch the alarm on …. you know the feeling. A smart alarm eliminates that worry. Not sure if you’ve switched your alarm on? NO PROBLEM, check the secure app on your smart phone and, if it’s not, set and unset independently with a simple swipe motion. Not got a smart phone? No problem. A smart alarm can still be set and unset just like any ordinary intruder alarm system. In fact, we can make it ultrasimple and provide a small handheld remote to enable you to set/unset at the click of a button, just as you do with remote central locking on your car. Concerned you’ll forget to set? We can program your smart alarm to auto set at a pre-determined time of your choice – say 9.15 to 17:15 (Mon-Fri) when everyone should be out of the house at school, at work or ….. ahem ….. the golf course!? What happens if your burglar alarm goes off? Do you think your neighbours go round and check your home? Not according to a recent survey. Now what ….? You’re at work – perhaps 30 minutes away or away on holiday. Is it just a false alarm or is your house being torn apart by intruders? Unfortunately, with an ordinary alarm, you will never know and only find out when you get home. Wouldn’t it be great to get alarm notifications instantly via your smart phone and, at the tap of a button, get visual verification of what’s actually going on inside your house? That’s the power of the smart alarm! Abacus Fire and Security Ltd; the Hadleigh based company you can reply on for all of your intruder, fire, access control and CCTV needs. Owls provide three birdies in a row for golfers Golfers on a Suffolk course have witnessed the ultimate – three birdies in a row. It did not occur on the fairways or greens of Newton Green Golf Club, but in one of the two barn owl boxes the nature wise club has installed beside one of its fairways. The three baby little owls were recently gently removed from their box by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, tagged and put back in their nesting place. Martin Brightwell, head greenkeeper, said: “We installed the boxes three years ago, and in the second year in one of them we had four baby barn owls, which were tagged by the trust. “Now we have had three little owls in the same box. The second box has attracted only squirrels, and it is being relocated. “The wildlife trust is hoping it might be able to trace some of our four barn owls from last year. I would be interesting to know how far they have spread.”

Take a moment to imagine if you couldn’t hear the birds singing, your friends talking in the pub, or your favourite song playing on the radio. This is reality for many people who experience hearing loss and a major new photographic competition is being launched by one of Suffolk’s best-known businesses to raise awareness about the importance of hearing. Titled ‘Sounds of Suffolk’ the competition is being launched as part of Deaf Awareness Week, a national initiative also aimed at highlighting hearing impairment. Award-winning hearing care specialist, The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at The Health Centre, is inviting amateur and professional photographers alike from across the county to enter the competition with pictures which demonstrate the incredible sounds that can be found in and around our beautiful county and may not otherwise be heard by those with hearing loss. “It could be the sea crashing against the shore at Southwold, birds singing at Minsmere, the bells chiming at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral or screaming thrill seekers on a ride at Pleasurewood Hills” says Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre. “In fact any picture which depicts the sounds of the county in a powerful way,” she says. “People with good hearing often don’t realise the impact even mild hearing loss has on the enjoyment of ordinary things around us – we want our competition and the campaign to draw attention to some of the sounds that hard-of-hearing people cannot hear.” Karen explained: “It can take years for some people to decide to do something about their hearing loss - it’s estimated that there over 119,000 people in Suffolk who experience hearing loss, yet so many have yet to do anything about it. We want to get the message across that they really are missing out on life and CAN do something about it.” The Hearing Care Centre, which has 24 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk, is putting up a top prize of £250 for the best picture, followed by £100 for second place and an annual subscription to Suffolk Magazine for third place. The closing date for the competition is Sunday 30th July 2017. For full information about the competition and the entry details, visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/soundsofsuffolk

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) latest campaign to recruit volunteers was a huge success, with over 40 people signing up to add themselves to frames like this one and help the charity in its shops across the region. The good cause relies heavily on volunteers to help in its 23 shops by steaming clothes, sorting through treasured donations, designing window displays and serving customers with a smile. Ian Nicolson, Head of Retail and Trading, said: “We’re really pleased that our recruitment campaign worked so well and captured the imaginations of so many people who stepped forward to donate their time. “We try to maximise the amount of money we raise to fund our children’s hospice services by using volunteers as much as possible and we’re incredibly grateful to them all for their support. To have the help of an additional 40 people is simply excellent news and it will be a huge boost to our shops.” EACH shops have seen help come from people of all ages, from students who volunteer as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards through to retired people who want an opportunity to get out of the house and make new friends. The shop in Sudbury also attracted new support, including local resident Sally: “I used to be a regular customer and saw the advert for volunteers in the paper. I have signed up to work all day on Mondays. The other volunteers are so friendly and work so well as a team. I am loving it so far.” For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 75% of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service. If you are interested in volunteering for EACH please call 01223 205 183 or visit www.each.org.uk/support-us/volunteering.

Charity car wash in Sudbury helps East of England Co-op Funeral Services raise more than ÂŁ800 for Special Olympics Suffolk athletes As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting the community, the East of England Co-op Funeral Services branch in Sudbury has raised vital funds to help send local athletes to this year’s Special Olympics Great Britain National Summer Games. Colleagues hosted a one-off charity car wash on Saturday 10th June which saw the team at the branch in Cornard Road volunteering their time to clean, scrub and wash cars in return for a donation. The event helped contribute to an incredible ÂŁ890 raised by East of England Funeral Services branches across Suffolk as part of a week-long programme of fundraising to send Suffolk athletes with intellectual disabilities to the games in August. Emily Houghton, East of England Co-op Funeral Services Area Manager (Development), said: “For us, this was a chance to not only raise money for the upcoming national summer games but also raise awareness. Thanks to the generous support from the community and fundraising from colleagues, we hope the money can make a real difference to these athletes and their families.â€? All proceeds will be donated to 22 athletes and five coaches from Special Olympics Suffolk to attend the Special Olympics Great Britain National Summer Games in Sheffield this August. Held between between 7th and 12th August, the Special Olympics is the country’s largest multi-sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities and will see around 2,600 athletes from across the country come together for four days of competition. Recognised as the third member of the ‘Olympic Family’, the charity increases opportunities and participation in sporting activities, training and competition for people with an intellectual disability. The Special Olympics supports established clubs and helps the development of new clubs or groups, offering athletes an opportunity to participate in a sport they enjoy and importantly creating a support network for parents and guardians The East of England Co-op Sudbury funeral branch is open Monday to Friday from 09:00am to 5.00pm, with a free care line available every hour of every day on 0808 252 0237. Were you at Sudbury Girls High School any time in the 1960’s or early 1970’s up to its closure to become the Middle School? If so, you may be interested in our ‘1960’s Plus Grand Reunion’ to be held on Saturday September 23rd from 7.00 p.m. in the Long Melford Village Hall. This is an opportunity to come along and share memories and maybe meet up with old friends not seen in so many years. We’re asking people to book ahead, with a payment of ÂŁ10, which should cover the cost of the hall and a finger buffet. We’ll be holding a raffle on the night to cover any extra costs. We hope that everyone will bring along items of memorabilia, and that, during the following year we’ll be able to produce a second volume of memories of the school – the first was produced by the Old Students’ Association a couple of years ago. The OSA meets twice a year, and we’re aware that there are a few year groups who have their own reunions from time to time. This is a one off extra special event. If you’re interested then contact Pam Cram (nee Collett): 86 Pontardawe Road, Clydach, Swansea, SA6 5PA 01792 845942 or pcram@headweb.co.uk Please pass on the information to anyone you know who could be interested, but remember it’s ‘first come first served’ due to limitation of space in the hall! I can provide the full information and booking form either by post or electronically for you to pass on. Sweet or savoury – the choice is yours! It’s no secret that The Bridge café’s delicious cheese scones are something of an institution in Sudbury. But this summer we’ve created a new menu that’s not only packed full of homemade snacks and lunches made from locally sourced produce, but a special scones menu to tantalise those tastebuds. The scones menu has been developed by our talented kitchen team who have worked hard to put together mouthwatering recipes just for you. Come and savour a cranberry and orange scone or sweet lavender scone with your tea. Or why not try a warm cheese, apple and walnut scone with your coffee in our Courtyard Café in Gainsborough Street? Due to popular demand our cafe is now open on Saturdays too. Our hearty lunches, selection of scones and snacks are cooked fresh so take a break from shopping, visit us for lunch and relax. We also run lots of activities for people of all ages, including our popular Paint Your Own Pottery and our monthly Film and Supper Club. The Bridge Project is a Sudbury based charity that helps adults with learning difficulties in the community. All money made goes straight back into The Bridge, to support the services it provides the community. For more information visit www.thebridge.co.uk

Home improvement specialists SEH BAC have been named South-East Company of the Year by the elite Master Window and Conservatory Installers Association (MWCIA), an organisation which helps consumers find outstanding window and conservatory companies in the UK. The Suffolk-based window, door and conservatory installers have received the prestigious accolade for their consistently high standards of customer service, ethical trading practices and high-quality products, installations and support. “As you can imagine, we’re absolutely thrilled to be named SEH BAC managing director John Savage Company of the Year for the (left) with Don Waterworth South-East by the MWCIA, the trusted voice in consumer protection,” comments John Savage, Managing Director at SEH BAC. “This award further demonstrates our passionate commitment to putting our customers first.” The MWCIA was established by respected chartered building surveyor and engineer, Don Waterworth, who used his expertise in the industry to create an independent database of reputable installers for homeowners. By using a MWCIA-qualified installer, homeowners can rest easy in the knowledge that they are employing a firm that has been thoroughly vetted and operates completely above-board. Don comments: “With a company as large as SEH BAC, it could be easy for standards to slip, but I couldn’t be more impressed with their attitude, their professionalism and, most of all, their dedication to their customers. We’re delighted to name SEH BAC as Company of the Year, and I would recommend them to any homeowner in the area.” Part of Ipswich-based One Group Construction, SEH BAC are one of the largest home improvement firms in the area and in the country. They specialise in windows, doors and conservatories, and operate 17 showcentres across the South-East, East Anglia and the Home Counties, with more planned in the near future. Peter Thorogood... “The heaviest penalty for declining to rule is to be ruled by someone inferior to yourself.” Plato So the unedifying spectacle of our recent General Election and the truly despicable campaigning is now past. Jimmy Cranky north of the border again holds sway but succeeded in handing a dozen seats to the historically hated Tories. The sainted Theresa, arrogantly calling an election when having promised not to do so and counting on the support of the Sun, Mail and Express (seemingly staffed by the British Nationalist Party) apparently won but not according to Corbyn. Diane Abbott goes into hiding but has now re-emerged having brushed up on her maths. Would be less of a liability if left to shuffle around the streets of her Hackney constituency, with her in the wilderness Labour may provide a credible opposition. And of course Corby’s alleged links with Sinn Fein provide Fleet Street with much inflammatory material. But for sheer hypocrisy Saint Theresa, toadying to the DUP takes some beating. Have we forgotten when the totally ineffectual John Major had to kow-tow to them in order to cling to power and put back the NI peace process for months. They were as guilty of sponsoring terrorism as Sinn Fein. All will be forgot as we know the old adage, “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”. What an absolutely despicable lot they really are. Now if one thinks the Reptile House is home to the bloated self seeking parasites our own Suffolk County council merits some further investigation. They now house a staff of whom 192 trouser in excess of £50,000 with 29 bureaucrats on over £80,000. Twenty nine of the staff are Trade Union reps of whom 4 spend over 50% of our time on Union duties. In fact the cost of staff time on such duties costs the rate payer £119,000. Try that one in the private sector! However, just in case you have not been informed, how is this for an uncomfortable fact, 35% of your council taxes goes directly into the Staff council pension fund! That’s right, for every £1 in council tax you pay 35p is redirected to the pension pot. Great news for those of us, who through our National insurance contributions, exist on miniscule state pensions. And by 2020 it is estimated that over 40% of our rates will be so mis-directed, whilst not one of our gagged councillors ever raises this issue when campaigning. Of course not, they are party to the same gravy train, pocketing £334,913 plus expenses in a year. This may be acceptable if our fair county was effectively managed but the lack of policing, our potholed roads and mismanaged town halls prove otherwise. Now to the local Health (Mis) Trust. This completely mendacious and greedy body, not content with selling off People’s Park (the supposed hospital site) and closing our two hospitals for development and then replacing same with a clinic are left with a large adjacent plot ideal for flogging off to a developer. Having lunched with a that rarest of beasts, an imaginative councillor, the following idea was mooted. West Suffolk Hospital suffers (like all others) from bed blocking. Following treatment many patients, although no longer requiring medical treatment, cannot be released due to lack of suitable home care. The cost to the NHS is immense, in excess of £3,000 a week whilst those requiring operations cannot be admitted. So, on the surplus land, suitably next to a clinic, why not build say a twenty bed unit, for housing such patients whilst home care is organised. The weekly cost of some £800 proving a massive saving whilst beds are freed for medical care. And for those requiring such care a more suitable environment than a busy clamorous hospital ward. Also, to be fair Nigel Bennett and his Sudbury Watch (who they?) have mooted a similar scheme proposing non acute beds and a minor injuries unit. To me, plain common sense and cost effective. Almost certainly why it will not be adopted! Failing that we could erect an asylum on the waste land behind the town hall as a monument to the folly of paying some £830,000, including interest, for the most expensive staff car parking in Suffolk. A suitable venue (adjacent to the public toilets) for a retirement home to house those councillors who agreed to such a waste of ratepayer’s money. Sorry to be so negative but my correspondence bag proves that you lot hate it when I’m nice. Well, at least the weather has improved. All correspondence and general whinges to mandpthorogood@gmail.com

When golfer Russell Lydford transports equipment to his local club, he has the ultimate in buggy transport. With his clubs in the back, the Newton Green Golf Club member turns heads when driving his immaculate, half-ton 1946 Chevrolet pick-up into the car park. The sight, if the not roar of the truck’s 3.6 litre, straight six engine, which gives 18 miles to the gallon, can hardly be ignored. The Sudbury heating and plumbing engineer is an enthusiastic restorer of old vehicles - with a particular love in recent times of bringing back old American models to their gleaming, showroom prime. His 1946 Chevy, which was registered in Kansas in 1946, will be among around 50 vintage vehicles which will be part of a show at the golf club to celebrate its 110th birthday on August 6. The event is a curtain raiser for the club’s annual golf week. Russell bought the pick-up from its English owner three years ago, when it had been damaged by a fire in the back, and also had both its front and rear ends stoved in. With his own hands and a bit of specialist help, he set about carrying out a complete restoration of the engine, chassis and bodywork, emphasising: “Some people say they have restored something themselves, but very few do it without some outside input from specialists. I make sure I learn from them, and know I can do it on my own next time.” Now, he proudly displays his Chevy at hot rod and other specialist shows, including those of the National Street Rod Association, of which he is a member. He also once fully restored a now sold 1934 Sunbeam, which he turned into a hot rod, but found it “too scary to race!” Russell also owns a 1952 Sunbeam 500cc motorbike, which he restored, and carried out similar work to a now sold on “beaten up” 1952 Chevrolet pick-up and a 1963 Ford Consul Capri.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Dougie Mixed Competition
The Gayford Flyer Cycle Sportive Sunday, 10th September 2017 Anne Hemmings, Del Pritchard, Jo Little, Don Wiggins The members of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club competed for the Dougie Competition with the popular American Greensomes’ format. Both players hit a drive and each other’s ball for the second shot before playing alternate shots. There were some high scores on the day but none to match Del Pritchard and Jo Little with 45 points. In runners up spot were Ian and Bev Thompson just a point behind. Nigel and Mandy Byham claimed third place with 43 points. The best back nine holes were played by Barry and Lesley Hitchcock and the best front nine by Gary Borthwick and Barbara Rowe. The prizes were presented by the Club Captain and the Ladies Captain.
Jimmy Whittle honoured at Newton Green Newton Green Golf Club has honoured a former stalwart on the same day members played for a new trophy in his name. Builder Jimmy Whittle was the lynch pin behind a number of club house expansion phases following Newton’s development from nine to 18 holes more than a quarter of a century ago. He also took a leading role in assisting in the development of the extended course, and served a term as club captain. Following his passing last year, his son Paul, a former single handicap player at the club, presented a trophy in his father’s honour. Now, members have competed for the Jimmy Whittle trophy in a pairs competition. At the same time, the club has renamed one of the rooms built by Jimmy. It has been remodelled as a stud bar and named Jimmy’s Room. Jimmy’s widow, Mary, along with Paul, and club men’s captain Gareth Evans, raised a toast under the sign honouring the former club stalwart. The first winner of the Jimmy Whittle Trophy with 45 Stableford points was Kevin Levett and Nick Smith, followed by Mick Gronland and John Sherman 44, Harry Wordley and Ben Tawell 43, and Craig Rollinson and Paul Pengelly 42.
