Sudbury Dramatic Society – A Few Good Men The July production from Sudbury Dramatic Society based at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre is the original stage play of A Few Good Men by Aaron Sorkin which is on at The Quay from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th July at 7.45pm. Although well known as a successful film, A Few Good Men was originally a Broadway hit running for 500 performances. Author Aaron Sorkin, of television’s ‘West Wing’ fame, has crafted this dramatic thought-provoking military courtroom drama, pitting sullen rookie naval attorney, Daniel Kaffee against the steely and untouchable Colonel Jessop. Kaffee who has never seen the inside of the courtroom, defends two stubborn Marines who have been accused of murdering a colleague at Guantanamo Bay. His fellow lawyer, the self-appointed and idealistic JoAnne Galloway convinces him to take the case to trial, believing that the accused marines were carrying out an order from a commanding officer. Kaffee takes a huge risk in calling Col. Jessop to the stand, in an effort to uncover and prove there has been a conspiracy. Does Jessop know more than he has been admitting? This elegantly crafted legal thriller will leave the audience asking the question ‘Can you handle the truth?’ A few Good Men is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 7th July until Saturday 11th July at 7.45pm. Tickets are on sale from the Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaytheatre.org.uk.

A host of colourful wigs will brighten up a Sudbury opticians as staff take part in a fun event to raise money for children with cancer. As part of its ongoing Keira Campaign, Wardale Williams the Opticians, is supporting CLIC Sargent’s Wig Wednesday event, being held on Wednesday, May 20. Staff at the opticians will be joining hundreds of people across the country who are being sponsored to wear wacky wigs for the annual fundraising event. Staff at Wardale Williams wearing their The Keira Campaign was colourful wigs launched when Wardale Williams teamed up with the family of teenager Keira Dixon in March. Keira, 17, was diagnosed with a brain tumour after optometrist Greg Hybel spotted concerning signs during an eye examination at the company’s Halstead practice. The teenager was referred to hospital immediately and underwent lifesaving surgery within five days. The idea of the campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of having regular eye examinations. Money raised during the campaign will go to CLIC Sargent, which has supported Keira since her diagnoses last year. To date, the campaign has raised more than £2,000. Amanda Skinner, Wardale Williams practice manager said: “We’re all really excited to be getting our wigs on for the day and hope to encourage our customers to do the same. The Keira Campaign is an issue very close to our hearts and it is so important we keep reminding people of the importance of having regular eye examinations, as in extreme cases they can save lives. We are also pleased to be supporting CLIC Sargent, which has done so much to support Keira and her family.” Staff at other Wardale Williams practices in Halstead and Haverhill will also be taking part in Wig Wednesday. Colleagues at sister company Observatory the Opticians, which has practices in Beccles, Ipswich, Southwold, Leigh-on-Sea and Muswell Hill will also be taking part in the event. Daisy Turner, CLIC Sargent fundraising manager, said: “We can’t wait to see everyone’s new looks and hope that more businesses will embrace Wig Wednesday with the same excitement that Wardale Williams and Observatory have. “All the money raised from Wig Wednesday goes towards CLIC Sargent’s work providing vital practical, emotional and financial support for families whose lives have been turned upside down by cancer.”

Rebecca runs that extra mile for Golf While pondering her thoughts training for a 60-mile ultra-marathon later in the summer, Sudbury’s Rebecca Evans can always direct her mind to the affairs of her main sport of golf. The 17 handicapper from Newton Green Golf Club has recently been nominated to represent Suffolk Ladies’ County Golf Association as a voting delegate on the game’s national governing body England Golf. It means she takes a close interest on behalf of women golfers in Suffolk as the sport continues to forge a viable union between two sexes that until recent times have gone very much their own way. Nationally, participation in golf has taken a knock in recent years, which means delegates such as Rebecca have a major responsibility setting out the path to recovery. She reports: “We are starting to see some encouraging signs that the decline is bottoming out. The sport is being proactive in eliminating its previous perception of being stuffy and taking a lot of time to play. “A lot of work is being put into the Get Into Golf initiative, which means people can contact their local club and for just ÂŁ20 be taught by a fully qualified professional the rudiments of the game over a four week period. Thereafter, most progressive clubs are now offering a range of options for testing the water still further. “In some quarters the game has taken a long time to wake up to reality. I am lucky to come from a club which has been ahead of the game in this respect, and at county level I believe Suffolk also has a very progressive attitude. “I can only speak from the evidence I have seen at women’s level, but Suffolk seems to be served by a team of very able people, with good business and organisational skills. “The county is also very proactive with young people, and it is refreshing that the girls’ junior organiser is only her early twenties.â€? Rebecca’s national duties include attending four meetings a year, including at least one at England Golf’s Lincolnshire headquarters Woodhall Spa, where attendance gives her the chance to play at the famous Hotchkin Course. She also sits on the Suffolk Golf Partnership, which seeks to promote the sport through various golf bodies, including county associations and the Professional Golfers’ Association. Back at Newton, where she was a member of the club’s last Suffolk Cranworth Trophy winning side, she is now part of the under 20 handicap Stearn team, as well as playing in the Mail On Sunday squad. Recently, she took part in her first marathon run. She completed the Brighton event in a very creditable three hours 58 minutes. Her next running challenge is the 100 kilometre ultra-marathon being run along the Stour Valley Long Distance Path between Newmarket and Cattawade during August.

Dates for your diary still this term:

This academy year has seen many sucessful events and achievements, of which we are hugely proud. Apart from the tributes we recieved from the local community following our hugely successful sell-out production of Oliver, we were also very proud of our sixth form dance students scoring the highest mark in the history of the dance section at the Sudbury Arts Festival. We have been host to to the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance, and groups of visitors from India and Spain, with students working together to learn from each other. Students have been to Kenya working with young children, to the Belgium battlefields and to Stonehenge. We attended the first ever Suffolk Skills Fair, and had archeological digs in Long Melford. Students designed a phone app that won a competition and staged their own mock election. Our students have been recognised for their talents in many subjects, and always for their good conduct on visits. We are so proud of them!

‘Prayer 48’ - 48 Hours Of Non Stop Prayer! Four years ago the church community at St Gregory’s Church, Sudbury, created Prayer 48, a weekend programme of non-stop prayer for the town – a special event which proved to be highly successful and one that touched the hearts and needs of many people in the parish and beyond. Building on its past success, the church have planned another weekend of prayer which is to take place over the weekend of 12th – 14th June. The idea is, as in 2011, that every household in the parish of St Gregory be given the opportunity to have prayer said for them – whatever their need or circumstance. Leading up to the event, and in order to attract people’s prayer requests, some 5,000 prayer request cards will be delivered to homes throughout the parish – a huge task in itself! Organiser, Rev’d Helen Mitchell, explains: “We have always prayed for the community, but we want everyone in and around our parish to know that, and to know that we are listening to what is on their hearts, so they know that God, too, is listening to them.” The weekend starts at 10am on the Friday 12th June and rounds off at the Sunday Eucharist Service on 14th June. During the weekend there will be various activities and reflective experiences around the church for visitors to engage with, exploring the theme of prayer for healing, and, in the centre of the church, a large scale Labyrinth, a maze-like path symbolising our spiritual journey. Many people today are looking for spiritual depth in their lives and following a labyrinth has been found helpful for this for hundreds of years. On the Saturday evening a peaceful service of prayer for healing will take place. If you receive a prayer request card you can return it by posting in one of the special green boxes at St Gregory’s Church, the Library, the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Roy’s, Waitrose, and Aldi. More cards can be picked up at the church. People can also request prayer by text, email, twitter or facebook. Helen concludes: “We promise that will pray for every request we receive and that there will be some-one in the church praying for Sudbury and its people every moment, day and night, for the whole 48 hours. It is by coming together like this, in a totally dedicated and committed fashion, that we will see God’s amazing blessing – it will be wonderful to lift our town in this way and place our church community right at the heart of it!” All are warmly invited to pop in at any time during the weekend for as little or as long as they like – please do join us and capture the special-ness of this event. Refreshments will be available. Prayer contact details: Text: 07754 0869171 Email: stgregoryschurchsudbury@gmail.com Twitter : @stgregschurch #prayer48 Facebook : stgregschurch

We now provide a heavenly selection of freshly baked breads, rolls and baguettes perfect for everyday and special occasions.

The Supreme Court recently ruled that a wife can make a financial claim against her husband a full 20 years after they divorced. In this case, which has been widely reported, the wife made a financial claim against her husband. The husband disputed the claim on the basis that the wife made the claim too late, 20 years after the divorce. Five Supreme Court Justices unanimously ruled, however, that the wife’s claim should go before a Family Court. Lord Wilson said “the Court must have regard, to the contributions of each party to the welfare of the family, including by looking after the home or caring for the familyâ€?. The parties met as students in their early 20’s and married in 1981. They had one son and lived a New Age Traveller lifestyle before their divorce, the Court heard. The husband then went on to set up a company and is now worth an estimated ÂŁ107 million. Lord Wilson said that the wife who had lived in Suffolk, had raised her son through “16 years of real hardshipâ€?. Lord Wilson said that the wife’s claim was “legally recognisableâ€? and not “an abuse of processâ€?. He said, however, that the ÂŁ1.9 million payout she hoped to secure was too high an amount. This ruling highlights the fact there is no time limit for ex-spouses to apply to the Court for a financial settlement following their divorce however weak their claim may be. In other areas of law there are strict time limits, however not in family law and is this fair? Even after you are divorced each spouse’s right to make a financial claim against the other remains open unless you are the Respondent in the divorce proceedings and you remarry whereupon your right to make a claim against your ex will be dismissed. Otherwise the claims remain open unless a Court formally dismisses the right to make a claim. If there are no assets or you and your spouse have reached a financial agreement, you can have that agreement incorporated into a legally binding document which can provide for a dismissal of both spouse’s right to make a claim against the other. This is often referred to as a clean break. A clean break is not always appropriate in every case, however, the Court do have a positive duty to consider whether a clean break is in fact appropriate. Circumstances often change in the future. A Court Order providing for full and final settlement can be achieved at a modest cost if both parties are in agreement, providing both parties with assurance and secutrity. . For a reasonable cost you can obtain assurance and security in the future. Even if the wife is not successful in her claim against the husband or receives a nominal sum, the legal costs in this case will no doubt be substantial. If you have any queries or concerns with regard to your own circumstances and legal position, you can contact Carol Toulson at Holmes & Hills Solicitors in Sudbury to arrange an appointment we recommend you obtain legal advice. At Holmes & Hills LLP solicitors we offer a fixed fee initial consultation for the sum of ÂŁ100 plus VAT. This would be an opportunity to discuss your circumstances with your solicitor and have advice with regard to the options available to you. If you would like more information please do not hesitate to contact Carol Toulson or the Holmes & Hills LLP family team on 01376 320456. We are here to help.

Set yourself free with Fit2drive When driving on unfamiliar roads, we sometimes get baffled by road signs or badly worn road markings. The important thing is not to get flustered. If you know you're in the wrong lane, or realize too late you need to change lanes, often the safest option can be to stay in the lane you're in. A little diversion to go around and get it right second time is better than risking a collision. A quick lane change can be perfectly fine, but you must ensure that no other road users will be affected by your actions. Make good all round observations and signal your intentions to anyone near. On your driving test, mistakes like this can and do happen. Keep your cool; if you can't safely get back on track, the Examiner will guide you back to where you should be. Taking a wrong turn is not a big issue; keeping it safe and under control is. If you're thinking about learning to drive, you might have heard many dos and don'ts about taking your test. Unfortunately, some of what you'll hear is nonsense. Fit2drive will teach you about real driving, no myths - no mystery. What are you waiting for? www.fit2driveuk.com

The Long Melford Swan and adjoining Melford House have been awarded top ratings from the AA Boutique restaurant with rooms, the Long Melford Swan, has received two AA Rosette Awards for Culinary Excellence, the highest available rating for its first visit. Newly opened Melford House has also received the highest rating, an AA Five Star rating. The Long Melford Swan is run by the Macmillan family. Lorna Pissarro and brothers’ Oliver and Iain Macmillan started their Suffolk business at the Long Melford Swan almost four years ago, supported by Dad Andrew. Lorna Pissarro said: “Since the beginning we have set out to offer our customers quality expected of the AA accreditation system. From our contemporary menu and fine wine to a constant focus on the service we deliver, we know the importance of attention to detail. “It has been a nervous few weeks as we waited for the visit and to find out how we had done, so it was both an incredible thrill and relief when we found out we had received the top awards. I am incredibly proud of the whole team and we will be celebrating for some time to come.” The restaurant with rooms will receive plaques to recognise the awards, which will be displayed at the front of the buildings. Melford House is a boutique luxury four bedroom guest house which opened at the beginning of this year. It is situated two doors down from the Long Melford Swan on Hall Street in Long Melford near Sudbury, Suffolk. The AA awards recognise excellence throughout the hospitality industry and achieving an AA award is a highly prestigious accreditation that often takes restaurants and hotels many years to achieve. Head of AA Hotel Services, Simon Numphud congratulated the Long Melford Swan on Twitter, describing it as having ‘stylish rooms’ and ‘excellent food and service.’ Clive Chesser, business unit director for Greene King Pub Partners, said: “This is a fantastic accolade and thoroughly well deserved. The team at the Long Melford Swan work incredibly hard to offer a dining experience expected of an AA rated restaurant and a visit there is always very enjoyable. “The Long Melford Swan joins other highly regarded pubs and restaurants in our estate, such as Tom Kerridge’s two Michelin starred Hand & Flowers in Marlow. Like Tom, there is no question in my mind that this hard-working and talented family will go on to achieve even more great things.” The family also run the Hadleigh Ram and the Lavenham Greyhound. The 176th Hadleigh Show Saturday 16th May 2015 Despite a variable forecast the sun shone once again on the beautiful setting of Holbecks Park for our annual show and the crowd came out inforce to visit this rural showcase. With the launch of Hadleigh Year of the Sheep the focus was on our local community and the part that farming has played in its history and still plays today. Sheep were to be found all over the showground from the School Art work in the Education Tent to I’m a Sheep get me out of Here! in the Countryside Ring. Real sheep were also found in abundance up in the livestock area, along with cattle, goats and Suffolk horses, whilst horses of all types and colour were competing in other rings. Highlights in the Grand Ring included the daring stunts of Inch Perfect Trials Display Team and a demonstration of state of the art sugar beet machinery showing just how the sugar for your cornflakes is grown in this area. Numerous local trade stands were showcasing their businesses and the Food Hall was busy all day with many local producers to tempt the taste buds. The Flower Show and Rural Craft Marquees were, as usual, filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen. The Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year. So whether you have been attending this event for years or came for the first time, we hope to see you again next year on 21st May 2016.

SUDBURY GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL MEMORY BOOK

On Saturday 9th May 2015 we hosted our Annual Reunion Service and tea party at St Gregory’s Church, Sudbury and were delighted to finally launch our book of memories which includes photos and stories 1936 – 2014 covering the school’s history, from its opening in the 1920’s, through to its transformation into Uplands Middle School in the 1970’s. For those of us involved in gathering the information, it was an absolute delight to read some of these memories and to share our own! The first print run has now completely sold out and we have a waiting list! We will be ordering more copies from Keith Avis Printers, who have been so patient with our very unprofessional approach to the book, in June, so for those of you who are interested in purchasing a copy, we need to know by 20th June at the very latest, and for those of you who are waiting for the copies you have requested, we would ask you to be patient, please. It makes sense for us to place a large order so that we can hopefully keep the price at £4.50 plus postage if required. Boule-in The Summer! June is a time when our English gardens tumble with an abundance of scents and colours - it is also the time to embrace our “entente cordiale” and make an outing to Bildeston’s French store ‘The Boule-in’ whose summer sale “Jardin de Monet” takes place from Saturday 20th until Sunday 28th June. Now in its 4th year and very much established as part of Suffolk’s seasonal calendar, a visit to The Boule-in barn and garden gives us the chance to enjoy a little of Provence in a very English setting! “We can’t offer water lilies on a lake” laughs Cathy Bullen, proprietor of both the Bildeston and London store, “but I’m sure Monet would have enjoyed his meals al fresco sitting at a very similar French garden table! With two shops to fill we have been incredibly busy sourcing unusual pieces” she says. “Short weekend trips take us to Northern or Mid France but we spend a little longer in the South as the journey is so long.” Having just returned from 10 days in Provence with a lorry full of objets d’art and quirky pieces, the barn now overflows with vases, jugs, plates, glasses and cushions to style your al fresco living this summer. Wonderfully original tables, chairs and benches fill the garden to either purchase or just sit upon and relax allowing you to enjoy the charming atmosphere of this unique event. The Boule-in 'Jardin de Monet' runs from Saturday 20th until Sunday 28th June (10am - 5pm daily) www.boule-in.co.uk

Oh, for the love of coffee! By ex-punk rocker Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church It is no secret that the Vineyard Church loves its freshly brewed coffee before the start of its services. Socialising is a big thing for us. We know that by putting a cup of coffee into someone’s hands it helps them relax and feel welcomed. But recently my love for a cup of coffee went to another level. One Saturday morning my wife and I visited the London Coffee Festival in Brick Lane, London. Surrounded by hipsters and foreign students we entered into the strange, mystical world of coffee. I discovered just how amazing is the humble coffee bean and what it goes through to end up in our cups. So here’s how it gets to us. Coffee trees are only grown above a certain sea level and in tropical regions. They also only start bearing fruit after 4-5 years. Interestingly, much of the world's coffee is grown by small farmers on five to seven acres of land and is harvested by hand. After the ‘coffee cherries’ are picked they are ‘depulped’, a process that tears off the outer layer of the coffee flesh, exposing the two coffee seeds inside. This is followed by a period of fermentation, which can take anything from four hours to three days depending on the country, altitude and humidity. The coffee is then dried, taking a further three to five days or almost two weeks, depending on weather. Only when the coffee has been dried down to 12% moisture and a thin shell, called parchment, encapsulates each coffee bean, can it be put into coffee sacks and be exported. When the coffee reaches our shores it is delivered to roasting companies. Roasters need to have a strong attention to detail, excellent sensory skills and sensory memory. The goal in coffee roasting is to enhance the qualities of the green coffee beans and to develop them to their fullest potential. The last stage of the journey is, of course, the café. This is where trained baristas come into their own. The coffee has to be ground just right and brewed at just the right pressure. The milk needs to be steamed, but not too hot - otherwise it can make the coffee taste acidic or bitter. And then, only then, can you sit down to enjoy it. You can’t help thinking that this is a lot of effort to get our daily ‘hit’! But grateful I am. The world we live in is a humbling, awe-inspiring experience of beauty and grandeur. It is something to be savoured and tasted, again and again. We have learnt to take the earth’s riches and do incredible things with them - like make a cup of coffee. In the first book of the Bible, Genesis, we see how God puts his full creativity to work in the world. Afterwards he reflects: “God saw all that he made was very good.” We get just around 800 words to describe this incredible act of love, but they are all words designed to permeate our hearts and imaginations and cause us to ponder deeply on our reason for being. And the more we do, the more significant our relationship with God becomes for us. Just like your cup of coffee, life doesn’t just randomly happen to make itself, there is a creator behind it, along with a complex process filled with passion, love and dedication to the end user – us. The philosopher Wittgenstein once poured a cup of freshly ground coffee and asked his students to describe the smell. When they failed Wittgenstein said, in effect: “If we haven’t got words to describe the smell of coffee which we can hold in a cup in our hands, how can we think we have the words adequately to describe God?” This pretty much sums up my feelings of a loving God who feels passionate about bringing us the best, including sending us his son, Jesus. Happy drinking! Stour Valley Vineyard is a family church. Sunday Services are at 10.30am in the Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury (includes a full children and young people’s programme). We also operate Storehouse Foodbank. If you know a family or someone who is struggling, please contact our Storehouse team. Details at: www.stourvalleyvineyard.org. Meanwhile, thanks to all local schools, churches and businesses who collect food donations on our behalf. You are amazing!

Sudbury Rotary Club Sudbury Spring Gardens each year is a glorious reminder that that the winter is (more-or-less) over and this year was no excerption despite a somewhat bleak start to the second day. Neverthless many people visited the 16-or-sao gardens which members, friends and neighbours had opened to the public. Refreshments varying from teas, coffees and cakes to quiche and wine were well received in a number of the gardens and approximately £1,500 was raised for our charity in Lebanon, the Home of Hope Our major event after Easter was the week-long Sudbury Crucial Crew, when 725 enthusiastic 9-10 year old youngsters from 30 local schools gained valuable experience in dealing with some of life’s tricky and dangerous situations. We were delighted to again have the opportunity to use the splendid Crucial crew - learning what to facilities at AFC Sudbury as our base. do when dialing 999 Schools were invited to come along to either a morning or afternoon session during the week. Their pupils were divided into ten groups of 7 - 9 children, and they were guided around the circus of ten different 14-minute scenarios by Rotarians, partners and friends. As an example, one of the scenarios was put on by Suffolk Fire Service who brought along their mock-up of a child’s bedroom and used it to great effect to point out areas of potentially high fire risk, before simulating a fire with theatrical smoke and rescue by a fireman wearing full breathing apparatus. Needless to say, this again proved to be the most popular scenario with the children. UK Power Networks returned with a very effective interactive display that showed the dangers associated with electricity and the likely consequences to the unwary. Whilst Local St. John Ambulance volunteers demonstrated the correct response to a domestic accident andeach youngster was 5 taught how to move someone to the Crucial Crew - learning about ‘recovery position’. A new scenario, electricty led by Sudbury Transition Group and the town’s Community Warden looked at re-cycling and waste by dividing each group into two teams, who then raced each other to sort bags of rubbish - a scenario that blended well with our role as an eco-Rotary Club. Once again, we were grateful to Year 10 drama pupils pupils of Thomas Gainsborough School who joined us in two ‘shifts’, working alongside the strong contingent of Police Community Support Officers in two of the scenarios. Here they acted as shop-lifters, anti-social youths and drugs users giving an extra dimension to the scenarios, as it allowed the police to discuss and explain correct behavior, depending on how the groups of children responded to each situation. These are just some examples and these and others will be on offer next year when we hope to offer our 17th Crucial Crew. Meanwhile teachers and pupils are able to follow up with material that supports continued learning at home and in the classroom via the Sudbury Crucial Crew website. Perhaps some of you, our readers would like to join us next year. if you would like to come and see what happens, or lend a hand, make a note to keep 18th - 22nd April 2016 clear and pay us a visit. We are all appalled at the terrible loss of life resulting from the earthquake in Nepal. We reacted quickly with Vanuatu and were able to send a ShelterBox to the area and we are now acting quickly again, with the Talbot Club, to send another ShelterBox to Nepal. Over £760 was collected in a very short space of time. Loca;l charities which have benefitted this year include Open Road and we are also funding transport for schools participating in Schools’ Nature Project. Already we have two schools booked on a variety of visits to Arger Fen (Suffolk Wildlife Trust) and The River Stour Trust at Cornard Lock. We are very proud to promote this so that more children will learn about, and appreciate our country’s wonderful natural environment. Recently with the help of nine apprentices from Delphi Diesel Systems, a local fencer, a Waitrose partner, WelklChild HelpingHands and others we have been able to create a sensory garden for a severely disabled child. An event to look forward to will be the 38th Rotary Concert, which this year features once again Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, conductor Mathew Andrews and expect a promenade concert atmosphere. The date is Saturday 27th June at St Peters at 7.30 with doors opening at 7pm Finally a reminder that the Rotary Club of Sudbury meets every Monday at the Mill Hotel at 12.30pm, for lunch and often with a guest speaker. If you would like more information or would like to come along to one of our meetings to see what it is like, contact our secretary Roger Green on 07787 470876 or look us up on our website. http://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=503 or Google Sudbury Rotary Club.

Peter Thorogood... BRENT ELEIGH, Nr. LAVENHAM, SUDBURY, SUFFOLK

The Reptile House London’s Reptile House, often aptly named as the House of Commons (and there is many a common inhabitant) has a number of new residents. As to whether their mendacious behaviour will improve in any way I have my doubts. At least those new arrivals from north of the border will be totally incomprehensible to the likes of you and me. Perhaps the (soon to be single) Speaker could provide interpreters. Those unfortunate enough to be sacked from the gravy train will be duly compensated with a least £60 grand of our money and tiny Tim Yeo gets to keep his laptops. The new intake will immediately be granted an 11% pay increase of £7,600 although to be fair a minority have refused to accept it. Doubtless their city interests will more than compensate! I find it somewhat ironic that the same politicians trousering their vastly inflated salaries have the hypocrisy to criticise rail workers for demanding a far lower increase. Certain constructive steps however are being considered. Reigning in of the management of the BBC (which we happen to own) has justification. Over the last seven years the corporation redundancy payments have totalled a massive £277 million. There can be no justification for this misuse of corporate power; it is blatant cronyism and corruption. But why such late government intervention? The coalition has been in power for much of those seven years. Now to that even bigger monolith and sacred cow, our NHS. Whilst campaigning, every party promised to increase Health spending. It must therefore be obvious that few of these amateurs had ever managed a private enterprise. You do not shore up a failed institution by chucking even more money at it. Its not cash our hospitals need, it’s a vast clear out of those employed in the public sector who have so mismanaged our affairs and replacing with those experienced in the strictures of the real world. If you doubt the wisdom of this explain why managers and doctors responsible for the deaths and incompetence at the Mid Staffordshire Health Trusts were rewarded with bonuses totalling more than £7 million? Sudbury alone has proved a huge cash cow to our own local misnamed Health Trust. The misappropriation of Peoples Park, once held by the town and now being developed piecemeal (thanks to our ever compliant Babergh Planning Committee), the closure of Walnutree and St. Leonards to be replaced by a clinic of which we are patronisingly informed we are so, so fortunate to have. The Chairman of Babergh planning has already opinionated that Walnutree should be bulldozed (much to the glee of any NHS appointed developer) so what hope have we of saving and sympathetically developing that iconic site for future generations. Local Tory councillors Simon Barrett and David Holland have sensibly affirmed their commitment to Sudbury becoming a tourist hub. This can only be achieved if we cease bulldozing our history and ensuring (as with Long Melford’s Maltings) that such magnificent structures are retained. Now we have an absolute Tory majority in every government structure, from town to parliament, there is no longer an excuse for procrastination or inaction. Our wonderful town is in dire need for the redevelopment of the bus park area, a major overhaul of business rates to slow the imposition of even more charity shops and above all a solution to our traffic problem. Their first action should be to impose a moratorium on any further housing development until THEIR government provide both the political willpower and finance to give Sudbury the infrastructure it deserves. They now have to power, there can be no excuses, and the time for action is now. More power to your elbows councillors for if you not act immediately the blame cannot be apportioned elsewhere. We all await developments with baited breath! Peter Thorogood Usual threats and observations to mandpthorogood@gmail.com

BBC One daytime show, The Housing Enforcers, heads to Babergh and Mid Suffolk BBC daytime show The Housing Enforcers, featuring Matt Allwright, the champion of consumer rights, heads to Babergh and Mid Suffolk. For many of us mortgages are unaffordable, council houses are full, and the number of new houses built each year is half those needed. In total, more than eight million people rent their home from the council or a private landlord. The last time the number was this high Britain still had food rationing. The Housing Enforcers sees Matt Allwright join council teams as a trainee housing officer, separating hovels from homes in sixteen locations across the UK. In this the 20 x 45’ series, Matt confronts dodgy landlords, unwilling tenants, nightmare neighbours and he’ll come to the rescue of those in need. The producers, Twofour, worked with Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils to secure access to Housing Officers working in the area. Staff from the councils’ Housing Team spent two months earlier this year filming with the production company across both districts. They visited a variety of different tenants, each with their own particular problem or issue. Officers were keen to show how different their role – and the challenges they face - in a rural area compared with more urban councils across the UK. Gavin Fisk, Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s District Councils’ Corporate Manager – Tenant Services, said the team worked hard to show the production team all aspects of the work they face on a day-to-day basis. He said: “The work of Housing Officers often goes unnoticed. We expect this series of Housing Enforcers to highlight the challenges faced by our staff everyday whilst managing rural housing. Housing officers are often unsung heroes whose work has a direct impact on the lives of those tenants they come in to contact with. “Officers involved in the filming really enjoyed working with Matt Allwright and members of the production team. We hope the TV series to show just how diverse, sometimes difficult, but above all rewarding, the work of Housing Officers is.” Ian Watson, Community Housing Officer for Babergh and Mid Suffolk, added: “It was great having some time with Matt he understands the housing issues and is genuinely concerned for the tenants and how we deal with them. “I am looking forward to seeing how our work compares with the the other councils up and down the country.” Housing Enforcers: tune in on Mondays, 9am, on BBC One

Alice Regains Newton Green Ladies Title Alice Barlow scored a second round, course record equalling 72 to take the ladies’ 36-hole scratch championship at Newton Green Golf Club. For the fourth consecutive year the title represented a head-to-head tussle between Barlow and her fellow junior and Suffolk ladies player Ellie Aldous. Both 16-year-olds scored 79 in their morning rounds, and in the afternoon Aldous could only improve her score by one Leighann Wordley and Alice Barlow shot, for a 157 total, but Barlow’s three over par second round 72 saw her regain the title by six shots. Her 72 equalled the previous best ladies’ score set at Newton by Aldous. The pair now have their names on the Ann Tankard Trophy twice each. In the 36-hole nett score championship for the Emmie Hoare Cup, Leighann Wordley produced scores of 69 and 74 to give her a one shot margin win over Cate Fraser. Ann Tankard Trophy: 151 Alice Barlow, 157 Ellie Aldous, 168 Emily Penfold. Emmie Hoare Cup: 143 Leighann Wordley, 144 Cate Fraster, 146 Sue Lockwood.

St Elizabeth Hospice is launching a brand new team challenge event – a Truck Pull Teams of 8-10 are wanted to join the St Elizabeth Hospice Truck Pull to compete to pull a truck 50 metres – in the fastest time possible. The new event – which is the first of its kind for the local charity – will take place on Saturday 18th July, from noon, outside Mannings Amusements, Felixstowe. As well as the Truck Pull, individuals can challenge themselves further by trying their hand at the Car Lift – testing their strength and stamina as they see how many times they can lift the car – with the most repetitions winning. Rachael Brown, St Elizabeth Hospice’s Fundraising Support Manager, said: “We wanted to hold a fun, team event to encourage a bit of friendly competition - but to organise something a bit Can your team challenge different - and we took inspiration from Suffolk’s Strongest Man Suffolk’s Strongest Man, our Catering - Graham Reid? Manager, Graham Reid. “If you want to encourage team building and bonding or are looking for a challenge for you and your colleagues, friends or gym buddies, then this is the perfect, fun – but tough – contest for you.” Teams for the Truck Pull can be male, female or mixed. Each team is asked to raise sponsorship with all funds raised going towards providing vital care and support to more than 2,000 local people living with a progressive illness every year. The event will be as much fun for spectators as it is for participants and there will be entertainment for all ages – so bring all the family along too for a fun day out! To find out more visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/events or to request a registration form please call 01473 723600 or email fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk With thanks to: Seven Group for donating a truck for the day; Whip Street Motors for donating a car for the day; and Mannings Amusements for use of the venue.
