A New Community Centre for Sudbury? Sadly, Christ Church is to end its activity of worship on Sunday 7th January 2018 when the final Service will take place. However, since the announcement of closure earlier this year very many individuals and groups in Sudbury have expressed their wish that the premises should be retained and adapted as a community space. There are two factors in favour of such a development: 1. Christ Church premises were built in 1838, and extended in 1891 and the adjacent halls, kitchen and toilets (‘Friars Hall’) would, with adaptation, be eminently suitable for meetings and activities for people of all ages. (The present Church also contains an excellent Conacher organ.) 2. Sudbury has recently been deprived of some assembly spaces with the

restricted capacity in the Town Hall, the closing of the Conservative Club and St. Gregory’s Church Hall and the uncertain future of the Delphi Social Club. Our proposed project would help to redress this deficiency. Therefore should it be deemed right to found a community centre at this location there would be need for the formation of a Charity comprising of persons competent to sustain the premises, to arrange funding, to oversee and administer the venue, and to support community leaders. This is a serious, but exciting undertaking, which will require much commitment and cooperation from many. Arrangers of the Public Meeting are Andrew Phillips, Roger Green, David Tibbetts-Chaplin, Stephen Hogger and Malcolm Hill. Light refreshments will be served immediately after the Meeting. (Please let us know if you are coming for catering purposes and send any enquiries to Rev. Malcolm Hill, 11 Meadow View Road, Sudbury, CO10 7NU Tel. 01787 375503 e-mail malcolm.hill12@btinternet.com).

Mush app helps mums connect in Sudbury Mush is a free app for mums to meet locally with children the same age. It's mission is to make mums lives more fun and less lonely by connecting them with other like minded mums in their community. Rachel who lives in Long Melford has two children under the age of 4 and says, 'Toddler groups can be daunting if you're not a really confident sort of person. That's why the Mush app is such a fantastic idea, because you can get matched with mums who have shared interests and kids the same age then arrange to meet up.' Research conducted by Mush found that 60% of mums can go a full day with no adult interaction. Loneliness among mums can lead to mental health problems and Mush is trying to end this isolation by urging mums nationwide to sign up. The app can be a lifeline, especially for those who are single parents, have no family nearby or are new to an area. Mush was born when two mums Katie and Sarah, had a chance encounter in a rainy London playground, both with two small children. They swapped numbers and became friends. Over the coming months they decided all mums should have access to a free and fun way to make friends nearby. The app was launched in May 2016 and has now been downloaded over 150,000 times and is a top app for mums on the App Store. The app has recently been promoted in Long Melford, Sudbury and the surrounding villages, so that it can help more mums to connect and meet up.

As the Summer comes to a close, Rotary activity quickens once again, not that we have been that inactive in recent months! We had an entertaining and informative talk from Rotarian Glyn Jones on 21 August in the subject of TWAM. The mystery was revealed as Tools with a Mission and Glyn told us about its origins. From small beginnings nearly 30 years ago in Southend, it has grown and grown and they now own a warehouse in Ipswich from where refurbished tools are sent to deserving entrepreneurs in developing countries so that they can set up businesses. All applications are carefully assessed before the items are sent to them. The organisation is Christian-based but offers its services to all, regardless of faith or creed. TWAM refurbishes, sorts and packs tools into trade kits which are shipped out by container in banana boxes. Glyn rounded off his talk with a demonstration of how a kit is put together and boxed. Kits are provided for builders, carpenters, electricians, garden workers, ground workers, masons, mechanics and plumbers as well as a garage workshop kit. They also collect unwanted haberdashery, sewing and knitting materials and provide scholar packs. This was followed in early September with a talk by Cathy Press, from Compassion, one of the President’s charities this year. Compassion is run by volunteers and works in the Sudbury area to address domestic abuse. Their aim is to raise awareness and understanding about all aspects of domestic violence and abuse. Cathy’s talk was inspirational and members were impressed by the volunteers’ dedication working all the time under considerable pressure. Some you may have seen some of us last month collecting money in Tesco’s towards a Shelterbox to add to the number being sent out to people in distress, on this occasion to those suffering from the hurricane in the Caribbean. Each Shelterbox costs in the region of £600 and, as its name implies, provides a shelter as well as cooking utensils and other items to make life just a little easier. The beauty of Rotary Foundation initiatives such as this is that none of the money which is given is spent on administration because any such costs are covered by the interest each year from members’ gifts and legacies to Foundation. The following Saturday, members joined the Litter Pick at Tesco’s and more Litter Picks will follow on a regular basis, You may remember references in previous issues to the support we have given over the years to Home of Hope, the children’s refuge in the Lebanon helping street children not only from that war-afflicted country but also increasingly from the families of Syrians fleeing from their homeland. Working with others in Sudbury and the surrounding area , Rotary has given over £17000 to the Home of Hope. Much nearer home, Mel Edwards, Tesco’s Community Champion will be talking to us in October. During this term, we will be distributing, free of charge, dictionaries to all Year 6 children in our local primary schools. Another local initiative which we hope to support, this time mainly in kind, is the newly-formed Community Depot and we have invited a speaker to one of our weekly lunches, in November, to talk about this new venture. This will be followed by a talk from Emma Black, the Countryside Officer for the Stour Valley Educational Network. Meanwhile we are reminded that Christmas (!) is approaching and work has already started with the launch of the fifteenth Christmas Tree Festival. The Festival will take place between Wednesday 6th and Sunday 10th December. Organisations are invited to apply for spaces which are available on a firstcome first-served basis at a cost of £16 for non-commercial exhibitors and £30 for commercial enterprises. Applications should be made to Dr Malcolm Offord, 98 Melford Road, CO10 1 JY or the Sudbury Tourist Information Centre in the Library by Friday 17 November. Demand is always very high so it’s better to apply sooner rather than later. Watch out too for the Annual Schools Concert on Monday 4th December, and Santas Grotto which will appear once again at the Christmas Lights switch-on at the end of November before moving into the warmth of the Library. Full details nearer the date. Rotary’s guiding principle is “Service above self” which we combine with Fun and Fellowship. If you would like to come to one of our lunches – to see what we are like and to hear about what we do! – please get in touch. Lunches take place on Mondays at 12.30pm for 1pm at the Mill Hotel. Just let us know in advance and in any case if you would like more information about our club and our activities please contact our secretary Roger Green on 07341 290415 or look us up on our updated website www.sudburyrotary.com or simply Google Sudbury Rotary Club Rotarian Tony Platt

Summer Reading Challenge Long Melford Library The Animal Agent Summer Reading Challenge took place this year and Long Melford library had a record breaking 89 children from the village and the surrounding area, sign up. As a result, the visitor numbers dramatically increased as families visited, some for the first time, to take part and solve the Animal Agents crime. An amazing 65 children completed the challenge by reading six books during the six week summer holidays and on Sunday 10th September we held two parties. The children were presented with their certificates and medals by Chair of the Parish Council, Cllr Liz Malvisi. The highlight of the day was a visit from Jungle Jo, who captivated the children with her array of reptiles and other creepy crawlies, thanks to the Friends of Long Melford Library who paid for this fabulous entertainment. Please make visiting your local library part of your weekly routine and if you haven’t yet joined the library yet, you can do so with your driving licence or a household bill and proof of signature. Thought for autumn The watch and the watchmaker The first autumn chill is in the air and the darker days of winter imminent. Do we look upon the wonderful colours of the trees, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness as time to paint, a time to taste, a time to wonder at the pearly dew soaked spider’s web. Or do we look upon autumn as a season where dead leaves fall on a dormant earth and hope is a matter of waiting ‘til spring? It’s either a time for rejoicing or a time for melancholia. There’s a question asked long ago which is “What came first, the watch or the watchmaker?” Is evolution the only answer or could it be that there is a creator God? The well known song that is sung at this time of year in which are the words “All good things around us are made from heaven above. Then thank the Lord for all His love”. As Christians, we accept these gifts, through faith, as blessings given to us by a loving God. There is another song that reminds me of autumn, one that only Ella Fitzgerald does justice to. The iconic lyrics of Moonlight in Vermont, which begins “Pennies in a stream, Fallen leaves of sycamore, Moonlight in Vermont”. People flock to Vermont on the eastern seaboard of the United States to witness the amazing colours of autumn; which is hardly rational if looked upon as just dead leaves. As Christians, the God given joy, hope and love we receive can only be expressed when sharing with others, not as a duty but as a celebration.

Sudbury Mayor’s Report

TOW N HOUSE FA RM

There's a distinct Autumnal feel to things now, leaves are turning, we've our first storm and the nights are drawing in. Lots of jobs in the garden to get done but an exciting time of year with all the Winter festivals ahead. I was so pleased to be back in the swing of things after being forced to take a couple of weeks out after surgery. I had a wonderful afternoon with my friends at The Richmond Fellowship BBQ. We all had fun with the quiz! I was happy to see so many attend this event and support this brilliant organisation. I was very happy to show my support for the guys at the end of their epic Wheelchair charity event - well done all who took part! I attended an initial meeting regarding the future of the United Reform Church. There is going to be a public meeting on Sunday 8th October at 3pm to discuss its future. I would urge people to attend as this is a very valuable community asset which we need to save for Sudbury. We had a successful Heritage Open Day and Mayors Coffee Morning. Thanks to all who came along. I attended the Stowmarket Civic Service and a very moving service in Thetford to commemorate the Battle of Britain. I enjoyed the Sudbury Carnival Queens Court Charity evening. Well done to Ashleigh, Tracey and Alison and all the dedicated folks who work so hard to put the carnival on and who are now raising funds for the community kitchen - a truly fabulous cause. I had the very great pleasure of attending the annual meeting of the Sudbury Market Town Partnership. I was very impressed with all the hard work the president and trustees do for their organisation and I was truly moved by all the presentations from the varied community organisations and charities that operate for the good of local people. Sudbury really is a lovely town full of dedicated unsung heroes! Sarah Page, Sudbury Town Mayor

James Cartlidge writes From

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Since being elected in 2015 I have been campaigning for a Sudbury bypass, and I am now asking you to join me in showing your support for this essential project. I sincerely believe that a relief road to the west of Sudbury is essential to alleviate the congestion which is damaging the historic centre of South Suffolk’s main market town. Economic development is curtailed and adjacent residents face high levels of pollution. Whilst Hadleigh still faces the issues around Benton Street, one shudders to think how gridlocked Hadleigh would be without the bypass we all now take for granted, but which I believe could bring similar relief to Sudbury. Let us not forget that an initial business case found that the cost-benefit ratio for the project is 3:1, demonstrating the enormous value it would add to our area. Moreover, the same report estimated that a bypass would reduce HGV movements through the centre of Sudbury by 60%. When the Roads Minister, Jesse Norman MP, visited Sudbury to look at the congestion that builds up in the heart of the town, it was made clear to me that strong local support will be absolutely vital for the future success of the project. As such, I have decided that a cross-party parliamentary petition, to be presented on the floor of the House of Commons, is the best way to formally document the support in Sudbury and the surrounding areas. The campaign already has the formal backing of Babergh and Braintree District Councils, Suffolk and Essex County Councils, New Anglia LEP and the Haven Gateway Partnership, but this is an opportunity for you to get behind the campaign. The petition is available to sign in Sudbury Town Hall and the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard, plus shops around Sudbury including Winch and Blatch, Kestrel Bookshop and Javelin Men’s Clothing. A full list of locations can be found at www.jamescartlidge.com alongside the online petition which residents can sign directly. We will also be running stalls on market hill on Saturday 7th October and Saturday 21st October. I would be most grateful for your support.

Sudbury & District The Royal British Legion Although we had planned to be at Gt Cornard Fete in July with the Branch Gazebo unfortunately this had to be cancelled on the morning owing to unforeseen circumstances. However we did enjoy the Party in the Park which was a fun Day for everyone and we saw lots of people at the Gazebo. Remembrance is soon coming up and Poppies Wreaths and many Appeal items have been ordered to be despatched from Aylesford the main Poppy Store. Collectors will be contacted in good time regarding collecting again this year which means that boxes and tins can be prepared and given out. If you would like to collect for the Appeal please ring Stuart the Poppy Appeal Organiser on 01787 374277 and he will be pleased to have your help. On Remembrance Sunday November 12th there will be two Parades one being at Gt Cornard forming up and leaving near the Kings Head Bures Road at 9.45 a.m. for a 10.15 a.m. Church Service. This will be led by our Piper Trish Drawbridge and Drummer Rob Drawbridge together with the Phoenix Community Group. Just before 11 o’clock all the Congregation will leave the Church to congregate around the Memorial (weather permitting) for the Two Minutes Silence followed by the laying of Wreaths. In the case of inclement weather Wreaths will be laid on the Alter in Church and taken to the Memorial by myself the next morning. Hopefully it will stay dry. A Remembrance Service and Parade will also be held at Sudbury forming up on the Market Hill to leave at 2.00 p.m. for a 2.30 p.m. Service. The Parade will be led by the Colchester Pipes and Drums to St Gregory’s Church and Wreaths will be laid at the Memorial after the Service. Again if it is wet Wreaths will be laid on the Alter and taken to the Memorial in the morning. Anyone can join the Parades and of course all are welcome at the Churches. Ormiston Sudbury Academy have again said they will be holding another Festival of Remembrance event – very much enjoyed and all proceeds to the Poppy Appeal and this will be late October. Which takes us on to the Launch of the 2017/18 Poppy Appeal to be held outside the Town Hall on Saturday 28th October. The Gazebo will be in place near the Town Hall for the following two Saturdays being 4th November and 11th November. The Two Minutes Silence will be observed outside the Town Hall at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday 11th November. Members together with the Standard Bearers make visits to some of the local Schools when we give a short talk to Pupils and finish with the Kohima. We also visit Mellish Care Home and Red House Care Home when we have a Remembrance Service too. Branch Standard Bearers come to all our outside events. Our meetings are held on the second Monday of the month in the Snooker Club North St Sudbury 7.00 for 7.30 p.m. start. Membership is open to anyone you do not have to have served in the Forces and we do have some Open nights when we have a Speaker. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 20th November (note 3rd Monday) starting at 7,.30 p.m. Finally follow us on Facebook for up to date news and events and also on the Branch website ‘britishlegion.org.uk/branches/Sudbury. Brrr! We all enjoy an early morning run around the field but those of us who are “vertically challengedâ€? come in with a very damp undercarriage! And not only us dogs, recently arrived Rupert the baby pig squeals in disgust when the grass is wet! You should have seen Button’s face when the little porker first arrived and chased her around Mum’s legs. Our resident Norfolk Terrier was not impressed! I’m so pleased 15 year old Billy, a Jack Russell cross, has found a lovely foster home with a great big garden. Mum is hoping for another happy ending, but this time for Erica and her five kittens. Some mean person dumped the poor pregnant puss but she and her litter are safe with us now and waiting for new homes. Meanwhile the kitchen still resembles a wildlife sanctuary with lots of birds receiving regular TLC, much to Ollie’s disgust! The fundraisers are looking forward to meeting lots of you at our ÂŁ1 in the Ansell Centre, Hadleigh, IP7 5DL, 11-2pm on 14th October. After that is the Christmas Fair at The Old School, Long Melford on 19th November. That reminds me to remind you – make sure you keep your pets safe before and during Bonfire Night. As the 5th is a Sunday, people might set celebrate early, maybe even at Halloween, so please be prepared. I can’t impress upon you enough how scary fireworks are to all animals, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. East Anglian Garden Group The new season is about to begin, on the 7th October, with the first of our autumn talks,’ Anything Silver’ by Howard Drury of Ashwood Nurseries. Howard was a presenter for ten years on Central TV’s Gardening Time, and is a consultant at the well-known Ashwood Nurseries. He will talk about silverleaved plants, and where they will flourish, and how to select the best ones for your garden. November 4th, is the AGM, and a good time to join the EAGG, if you have been thinking about it, as the subscriptions begin for the next year. Our speaker for the meeting will be Ken Thompson, with his talk ‘The Sceptical Gardener’. Author of No Nettles Required, An Ear To The Ground, and a regular column as The Sceptical Gardener in the Saturday Telegraph. He will be casting a quizzical eye on gardening topics including how bees improve strawberries, the difference between Spanish and English bluebells, compost tea, and how plants get sunburn! Also, at this meeting, EAGG life member, Barbara Segall, well known horticulturalist, columnist and author, will be signing copies of her exciting new book, Secret Gardens of East Anglia, with beautiful photography by the late Marcus Harpur, and published by Frances Lincoln. An ideal Christmas present for a garden enthusiast. Books can be ordered on line, and brought to the meeting to be signed, or can be ordered by EAGG for you, as long as we receive your order by 7th October. I am pleased to announce that our Celebrity Speaker for next year, on Saturday 17th February 2018 will be CLEVE WEST. His talk, entitled ‘Healing Gardens’ will describe his experiences in creating and working with the Horatio’s Garden for the spinal injuries unit at Salisbury Hospital. Cleve is a multiple Gold Medal winner at Chelsea, Best in Show Awards 2011 and 2012 and inveterate allotmenteer, (My Plot, published by Frances Lincoln). We expect a high demand for tickets as he rarely gives talks, and the venue will be announced once we have found a hall to hold everyone. Ticket prices will be £7.50 for members, and £12.50 for non-members. £2.50 from each ticket will be donated to the Horatio’s Garden Charity. Annual subscriptions cost only £12, and this gives you free entry to all the talks for the up- coming season (with the exception of the Celebrity talk), nonmembers are welcome at £5 per visit, so it is much better value to join us!! We have a plant and book stall at the meetings, and free tea, coffee and cakes are served after the speaker has finished, giving members an opportunity to talk to other gardeners and enjoy some social time. Full details of next seasons talks will be found on the website, and any queries regarding membership or book orders can be dealt with by our secretary Matt Long on 01449 741551. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net Shiimmy, Shake, Wiggle & Gig ggle Dance Fitn ness

Long Melford Parish Report Councillor Richard Kemp Tresco, New Road, Long Melford, Suffolk CO10 9JY 01787 378149 richard.kemp@suffolk.gov.uk

Suffolk Fire & Rescue Launches Escape Plan Campaign The Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has launched a new safety campaign and website highlighting the importance of fire escape plans, visitors to the campaign website fire.suffolk.gov.uk will be able to: • take a quiz to test how prepared they are to escape a fire • create their own escape plan for everyone in their household The campaign addresses the fact that every year there are 40,000 accidental house fires in the UK. Having an escape plan will allow Suffolk residents to escape the fire quickly and safely. The 'escape plan' fire campaign will run until 31 October 2017 More Students in Suffolk pass A level Exams than across the Country Provisional A level figures show that Suffolk pupils have once again performed well with the number of A*-E grades awarded above the national average. Almost 3,000 pupils were entered for A Levels in Suffolk. Although yet to be verified, the figures show that 98.2% of A levels taken in the county have been awarded an A* to E grade, compared with 97.9% nationally. 77% of A level grades achieved were within the A* to C bracket, in line with national figures and a 1% increase on last year’s results. A level and Applied General figures are based on self-reported data from schools and academies to Suffolk County Council. The results are subject to validation by the Department of Education in the new year. Suffolk County Council is working with the community transport sector to discuss a recent legal ruling with a view to finding a way to maintain these valued services. This follows advice from the Department for Transport (DfT) that affects all local authorities. The ruling has determined that going forward, local authorities cannot enter into certain contracts with transport providers unless they have particular operator licenses and related mandatory training certification. This change is part of new guidance issued by the DfT, not a new law, that states previous DfT guidance issued was incorrect. Like many other local authorities that proactively redesigned their community transport provision, Suffolk acted on the previous guidance in good faith and is now considering what needs to happen next. Suffolk County Council currently has 40 related contracts with local providers for community transport. The majority of these contracts are set over five years and the overall cost is £1.3M per annum. Energy Efficient Grants now available for local retail businesses in Suffolk Recent changes to European funding rules mean that retail businesses across Suffolk can access grants for energy efficiency measures. Suffolk County Council is collaborating with Norfolk County Council to use EU funding to support businesses from a range of sectors. A number of shops have already benefited from free and independent advice and a change in the funding regulations means that shops can now also access grants towards the capital costs of any energy saving measure. Energy experts will visit the business’ premises to conduct a free, impartial and independent review that identifies the best cost and carbon saving opportunities. Businesses interested in any aspect of this service can find out more and register online at www.beeanglia.org or call Groundwork on 01473 350370. Dedicated advisors will be able to answer any queries about eligibility for the programme or potential grant projects.

Bespoke Nutrition I know it is autumn because I have my first Hot Stone Reflexology treatment booked in this afternoon. If you have not tried Hot Stone Reflexology yet this is a great time to start. The heat from the basalt stones which are made from volcanic rock is transferred to the muscles in the feet. This warming effect relaxes the soft tissue which allows me to work the reflexes at a deeper level. Hot Stone Massage can be the perfect relaxing antidote to today’s busy lifestyle. The direct heat of the stones relaxes and warms your tired aching muscles, allowing the therapist access to your deeper muscle layers. Hot Stone massage clients can notice a healing improvement in the following symptoms: Muscular aches, pains and sprains, Circulation improvement, Rheumatic and arthritic relief, Back pain, Stress levels. The stones are moved in a certain way to produce energy within the body. So much of our modern day lives zap our energy levels so this is a nice way to put a little back and create balance in the body. I am offering Reflexology at a discounted price of £25 and Hot Stone Reflexology at £30 throughout October. Coming Soon: I will be adding HIFU facial treatments to my list of therapies in the coming weeks. All of the 3D Lipo Med treatments are non-invasive and painless. This latest technology involves the removal of body fat and cellulite and also skin tightening treatments. This is done using a combination of ultra sound, radio frequency and cryolipolysis (fat freezing) the results are both immediate and ongoing. This is a great motivational way to improve your appearance and change your lifestyle. Clients can lose pockets of unwanted fat. People who have lost weight are often left with areas with are impossible to target with diet and exercise alone. There is something here for everyone. Peter Thorogood... “We have the best Government money can buy Mark Twain The London Excel Centre has recently hosted the sordid British Arms Fair where manufacturers from around the globe peddle their wares to whoever can pay. Yes, bastions of democracy such as Saudi Arabia, Turkestan, China, Israel, the UAE and other regimes are wined, dined and the like by British manufacturers and government. Yes, I know, if we didn’t supply them then someone else will. Probably the most mendacious excuse on record. A nation that has barred foxhunting, bull baiting, and cock fighting as inhumane flogs instruments of death and torture to whichever dictator has a use for them, and is proud to declare we are the second biggest exporter of arms in the world. Absolute hypocrisy! Whilst this sickening spectacle is being held in our capital, once host to a proud democratic parliament, our own armed forces are now so underequipped even a second Falklands adventure would be beyond our military capabilities as the recent defeat of our forces in Basra (sadly unreported in our compliant press) proved. In the meantime at least forty of our MPs and many peers have financial ties with the arms industry. Incidentally at least seventy members of that same reptile house have financial ties (the less polite call it bribery) with the private Health Industry, so what hope for the future NHS? The finest Pope of our generation stated in a speech to Congress “Here we have to ask ourselves, why are deadly weapons being sold to those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society? and from an earlier statesman who prophetically orated in 1953, and I abbreviate “All arms that are made is a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. It is spending the sweat of its labourers, the genius of its scientists, and the hopes of its children. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from the cross of iron. Those words were not penned by some woolly thinking liberal but by the saviour of Europe, the great General Dwight Eisenhower. He had the wisdom to foresee the results of today’s arms race which our establishment so corruptly supply. But what else can be expected from Parliamentarians who work for the people that buy them instead of those that elect them? I see that Suffolk’s Police Commissioner, Tim Passmore, together with Chief Inspector Giles and Inspector Cooper (that’s three for the price of one) have hosted an overview of police inactivity in Sudbury. What hypocrisy! What the hell is the point? His pointless department, with a budget that would provide a number of active officers is successful in only overseeing a force that is patently not fit for service. One day they are sacking our Community police officers and then grandly boast they are about to recruit more. A patrolling bobby is as rare as an honest politician with our police station largely unmanned. In a recent incident a BMW was illegally parked in front of the doors of North Street’s Masonic Hall. This vehicle resulted in the loss of three blood donor sessions with about three hundred appointments cancelled. Why not contact the police I hear you ask? After dialling 101 and a wait of 14 minutes action was promised. Eventually a sticker was appended to the windscreen, then nothing. So there it stood whilst yet another session was cancelled. Our Town Clerk and Warden were powerless to assist and although they contacted the Police (yet again) still no action. After four weeks I finally lost patience and (probably illegally) shifted the offending vehicle some few yards to ensure access. So sue me! And I must ask, why does it take fourteen minutes to answer a phone and why can a vehicle with no insurance on a public highway not be impounded? The resultant loss of income and of more importance, the inconvenience to those public spirited donors is plainly the fault of an inactive and largely anonymous police force. Now I hope this brightens your day as much as it did mine. I quote the following headline from a national newspaper, “Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists clashed with their enemies Trans Activists. I thought this first to be an imaginative spoof, but no, its for real! I love it when the sisterhood fall out but I suppose that Trangenders cannot be so termed? Anyway, a sixty year old mother of two who describes herself as a “gender critical feminist (God, they now have their own dictionary) was assaulted by the opposing group. How I wish I could have witnessed this unedifying spectacle. Among the groups in the punch up were LGBTQ+, Action for Trans Health London and believe it or not Sisters Uncut. They must have presented a motley crew and I am moved to enquire as to how much social funding is involved. If only some television satirist would have the balls to cover this. A reflection on modern society and a true account to give we dinosaurs much pleasure in an otherwise somewhat grey and dismal world. All the usual insults and comments to mandpthorogood@gmail.com Peter Thorogood

OPEN DOORS O PROGR RAMME On days when there is no event in the Church, the Friends of St Peters operate an Open Doors proggramme. Weather and availability permitting, volunteer Stewards will welcome visitors between 11 am and 3 pm.

Rebecca Evans (front left, kneeling) with the Playgolf team, along with Diss (back left) and Haverhill (back right) Only two points separated the top three teams in the Newton Green Women’s Open, and first place was decided on count back. The annual event attracted a full house, with 72 players from Hunstanton to mid Essex taking part on a slightly cloudy, but otherwise perfect day for golf. It was record 18 team turnout for the event, and top spot went to a line-up from Playgolf, Colchester, whose Stableford score of 106 saw them home on count back from Diss, with Haverhill third with 104. Prizes were presented by Newton women’s captain Rebecca Evans. Results: 106 Rosina Cole, Jeanette Shae, Janet Blackmore and Caria Holroyd (Playgolf), 106 ocb Sarah Gotts, Sam Edwards, Roz Ford and Rebecca Draper (Diss), 104 Norma Humphrey, Linda Alexander, Mary Sail and Gerry Wheatley (Haverhill). Front nine: 49 Jan McLellan, Jan Wright, Helen Barr and Lyn Lawrence (Frinton). Back nine: 53 Ann Graves, Paulette Brook, Jeanette Longman and Lori Sage (Woodbridge). Longest drive: Catherine Craddock (Brett Vale). Nearest pin: Ann Barker (Gosfield).

Harvey Watts triumphs again in Suffolk Junior Event Harvey Watts, who plays off two, has continued his purple patch by retaining the Suffolk Junior Matchplay title at Bury St Edmunds. The Newton Green 17-year-old beat Bungay and Waveney Valley’s Conal Downing as his opponent finally crumbled on the last hole of a closely fought encounter. The pair were level going up the last hole, but Downing’s wayward tee shot meant he could not recover to snatch the title from Watts, having to concede the hole. Earlier in the day, by a similar margin, Watts had had beaten Alfie Halil of Flempton in the semi-finals, and the previous day in the first round put out James Iron of Haverhill 8 & 6, before getting through the quarter finals with an extra hole, play-off win against Max Adams, of Bury St Edmunds. Watts, who became joint course record holder at his home club a few weeks ago, was in the Newton team which finished sixth out of 30 teams in the recent England junior team championships at Woodhall Spa, and will be young enough to try and win the county title for a third time next year. He received the trophy from Suffolk county president Colin Firmin.

Stoke by Nayland Seniors Open Stoke by Nayland Golf Club has become well known, over a number of years, for its successful Ladies and Junior Opens so it was an easy decision for the Seniors Committee to make to run one of their own. After many months of planning sixty players took to the Gainsborough Course to compete for the inaugural honours. Twenty two different clubs were represented from as far afield as North Oxford, St Ives and Royal Cromer. It was also pleasing to have support from more local clubs such as Brett Vale, Braintree and Rushmere. Despite the inclement weather the day was a great success and plans are afoot for a second Stoke by Nayland Seniors Open in September 2018. The prizes were presented by Seniors Captain Norman Davidson who as well as congratulating the winners thanked the organisers Lionel and Pauline Hatch and the members who had volunteered to be ‘meeters and ‘greeters’, starters and ball spotters. Gareth Morgan and Bob Holmes from Brett Vale with an excellent 44 points took first place, on countback. They are pictured with Stoke By Nayland Seniors Captain, Norman Davidson. Full Results: 1st Gareth Morgan and Bob Holmes, Brett Vale, 44 points ocb 2nd Trevor Green and David Hawes, Braintree, 44 points 3rd Robert Barrell and Bill O’ Riordan, Braintree 42 points 4th Maurice Anderson and John Turnbull, Theydon Bois, 41 points ocb.
