It’s time for Sudbury to the Sea... Sudbury to the Sea, most commonly referred to as S2C, is a very popular event that takes place this year over Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September. The event is limited to 300 craft and we are now taking bookings (ÂŁ20 entry fee per craft). Participants navigate the 24½ miles (37km) of the River Stour, from Sudbury to the Cattawade Barrier, enjoying its many delights and seeing parts of the local countryside that are inaccessible by foot or road. All craft navigating the river and taking part in S2C must be registered to do so and all participants will be expected to abide by the rules of S2C. Experienced and novice paddlers travel from all over the UK, and sometimes further afar, to take part. The River Stour Trust provides help and advice along the route, a safety boat following all craft, and checkpoints at various points along the navigation. Participants must provide their own craft, personal safety equipment, transport at either end of the event, accommodation for the Saturday night (a campsite at the midway stage) and food and drink. However, there will be some food and drink available at various places along the route. Proceeds of the event go to the River Stour Trust, a registered charity No. 257806, seeking to restore and conserve the River Stour Navigation for the benefit of all.

edding Open Day

Sunday 17th September 2017 11am - 3pm

July marked the start of the new Rotary year and on 3rd July we held the handingover ceremony at the Mill Hotel. Mike Killoran passed the reins to Lesley Platt who is our President for 2017-18. This special event was further enhanced as we were entertained before lunch by Buddug Rowland-Frank from Upminster playing on her 1808 Grecian harp which she has owned from childhood. After lunch, she give a short recital from a wide repertoire of harp music while we enjoyed Mozart chocolates specially brought for the President Mike handing over to President Lesley occasion all the way from Vienna! Lesley thanked Mike for his spirited leadership, enthusiasm and dedication to the role during the past year and for carrying this out in his own inimitable style. She felt that he would be a hard act to follow. Lesley announced that her charities for the year would be Kernos (the counselling centre based in Friar’s Street) and Compassion (a local charity which supports the victims of domestic violence) together with the Club’s current overseas charities: sponsoring two children in a community school in East Meru, Tanzania, sponsoring courses for street children in Mali, and on-going support for Serenga Hospital, West Bengal. She plans to encourage all members to become as involved as much as their time and personal circumstances allow and develop even further the fun and fellowship we have together whilst encouraging others to join us either as full members or “Friends of Rotaryâ€? While still President, on June 15th, Mike had presented a cheque for ÂŁ3000 to his charity for the year, Eden Rose Coppice, towards their work at Sudbury. We look forward to continuing to work with them particularly with our initiatives for Environment and Youth. The new Rotary year also means a new District Governor for East Anglia (and beyond!) and he, Robert Lovick, came to our meeting on 7th August. His focus for the year is to concentrate not only on people enduring homelessness but also loneliness – so many suffer in this way both in our towns and rural areas. Later in the month, one of our own members, Glyn Jones, talked about TWAM and if you are wondering what that means watch this space. On 16th August, 16th September and 25th President Lesley with our October Rotary members will be joining the District Governor Community Litter-Pick meeting each time at Robert Lovick the front of Tesco at 10am. Early in the Autumn Term we will be presenting dictionaries to each of the local primary schools as part of the “Dictionaries4Lifeâ€? project. This year we have two candidates for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and they will be travelling to Grafham Water in early September for a week-long programme of leadership training. We look forward to hearing about their experiences on their return. During September Cathy Press will be talking to us about the work of Compassion and one of our new members, Maggi Thurlow-Craig will be focussing on Tanzania, where we have one of our international projects, sponsoring the two children in East Meru. Rotary’s guiding principle is “Service above selfâ€? which we combine with Fun and Fellowship. If you would like to come to one of our lunches – to see what we are like and to hear about what we do! – please get in touch. Lunches take place on Mondays at 12.30pm for 1pm at the Mill Hotel. Just let us know in advance and in any case if you would like more information about our club and our activities please contact our secretary Roger Green on 07341 290415 or look us up on our updated website www.sudburyrotary.com or simply Google Sudbury Rotary Club Rotarian Tony Platt Shiimmy, Shake, Wiggle & Gig ggle Dance Fitn ness

The Boule-in’s French Harvest “I can’t believe another magical summer has passed and we’re welcoming in the long September evenings: fruit on the trees and our quince (Coing) harvest” says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of The Boulein, Bildeston’s Stylish French Collectables store. “Our autumn fair, Fête du Coing, is named in homage to Cotignac - our Provencale village - which is famed for it’s quince harvest and festival” The Boule-in’s Fête du Coing (Saturday 9th - Sunday 17th September) has it’s own harvest of beautiful, authentically design-led decorative pieces to style your home and garden this autumn: exquisite antique mirrors and crystal chandeliers sit alongside french rustique, glorious gardenia as well as furniture with 1950’s industrial vibe. “We’ve spent most of this summer in Provence which has allowed us time to enjoy sourcing many beautiful new pieces: It’s a real adventure for us - we try and explore somewhere new to increase our knowledge of the area as well as the treasures we uncover”. Looking at the array of stunning new pieces they’ve brought home there’s no doubt their adventures have been profitable! Be charmed by the delightful barn and garden setting and take time to enjoy discovering your very own oh la la treasure… Fête du Coing: Saturday 9th - Sunday 17th (10am - 6pm daily) 77 High Street Bildeston, IP7 7ER www.boule-in.co.uk

Last year, Eva Gilly won her maiden title on the LETAS after rounds of 73, 64 and 68. The French professional beat Austria’s Sarah Schober by three shots. Schober would finish the year as the leading professional and has played on the Ladies European Tour this year. Coming into the event, England’s Meghan Maclaren leads the order of merit from Valentine Derrey of France. The tournament was launched in 2013 by the PGA to further enhance the women’s game. There will be 96 competitors from over 20 different countries, including 15 WPGA members, comprising winners from the WPGA’s One Day Series and the remaining places secured via a qualifying Order of Merit. Fifteen places will also be allocated to the leading English amateurs decided by England Golf, recognising LETAS’s commitment to providing an important link between elite amateur and professional golf. Susanna Rendall, Managing Director of the family-owned venue said, “We are really delighted to welcome back these fantastic women golfers from all over the world and to play our part in showcasing this excellent standard of women’s golf. We are especially pleased that 15 year old Lily May Humphreys, who is a Stoke by Nayland Club member, will be playing in the tournament having won the English Womens’ Amateur Championship as one of its youngest ever champions. I hope that many spectators will come along and watch this excellent tournament – particularly as entry is free of charge.” Di Barnard, the LETAS Tour Director said: “We are looking forward to returning to Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa for the fifth edition of the WPGA International Challenge. Susanna Rendall and Tamara Unwin are wonderful supporters of women’s golf and this is a fabulous venue, which the players thoroughly enjoy returning to each year. The Gainsborough course has proved a great test for the players and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the tournament to support the future stars of women’s golf.” There is a Pro Am with a Gala Dinner preceding the event on Wednesday 27th September. Horn Concert at St Peter’s Sunday 1st October 2017 3:00 pm St Peter’s Church, Sudbury CO10 2EH Sudbury Choral Society is presenting a concert of French Horn Music in order to raise funds for the Society. This concert will feature some of the best Horn players in the country, many of whom play with London Orchestras and teach in its premier music colleges. There will be about 18 horn players all of whom are members of the Tony Halsted Horn Ensemble. There is a wide range of music being played from Classical, La Danza, Rossini (arr. Pritchard); Tristan and Isolde, Wagner (arr. Crees). To Modern: Three point turn, Tim Jackson. Alsog Jazz: Give it one, Ferguson and Downey (arr. Bissill) Blues for Hughie, Simcock and popular tunes: The Trolley Song, Martin & Blaine (arr. Bissill), Sound of Music Suite, Rogers (arr. Jackson). This is the second concert that the Choral Society has organised for the Tony Halsted Horn Ensemble and is a concert not to be missed as Sudbury rarely has the opportunity to hear so many fine horn players playing, in the town, at the same time and such a wide variety of music. Last year’s concert at St Gregory’s was a sell out and this year we have moved to St. Peter’s to allow even more people to enjoy this music spectacular. The audience raved about last year’s concert and this one promises to be even better. There will also be some rarely played music for natural horn and using multiphonics. The choral Society are always keen to encourage young people to come to their concerts and Tickets are priced at a very reasonable £10 each with 1118s £5 and under 11s free. Tickets from Compact Music, Sudbury Tourist Information Centre or call 01440 785206. www.sudburychoralsociety.co.uk

Listen up! How clear hearing can help prevent dementia Specsavers Audiologists in Felixstowe and Sudbury are urging residents to listen up and protect their hearing no matter what their age, after a recent study showed a third of dementia cases are preventable through nine lifestyle changes – number one being maintaining good hearing.

Westley Fox Hearing Director at Specsavers Felixstowe and Sudbury

The Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention and care showed that mid-life hearing loss increases the risk of dementia by almost 10 per cent. Researchers say this can deny people a cognitively rich environment, leading to isolation and depression, which are among other potential risks for dementia.

Westly Fox, hearing director at Specsavers Felixstowe and Sudbury, gives his top tips on how to keep your ears clear. He says: ‘Young or old, once you lose your hearing you may never get it back. That’s why it’s important to know the threats and signs of hearing loss no matter what your age.’

• The cinema – Everyone loves a trip to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster. Cinemas often boast of floor-shaking sound systems that immerse you into the experience. However, your hearing could be suffering as a result. Sound can reach up to 130 decibels, which is equivalent to a jet engine. This isn’t to say you can’t enjoy your favourite films – just take caution. As with concerts, earbuds can soften the blow while still letting you in on all the action. • Earwax - Wax build-up is one of the most common causes of hearing loss. Some of the symptoms include: fullness, tinnitus and partial hearing loss. Eardrops can help loosen and soften the earwax, which may help it work its way out. However, the safest and easiest way to get rid of excess or hard earwax is to see a professional. Specsavers offers earwax removal services where an audiologist will either remove unwanted earwax manually or through micro suction for only £35. If there’s no wax there’s no fee. Westly says: ‘As with sight checks, hearing tests should be treated as a regular healthcare check-up to ensure you can hear that pin drop. Anyone over the age of 50 should have their hearing checked every two years and then every year once you reach 55. Hearing loss is a gradual thing so most people don’t realise there’s a problem until their hearing has really deteriorated. It’s important to remember that hearing loss is just part of the ageing process. It’s something that happens to everyone eventually.’

The top six hazards to your hearing • Smoking – Cigarettes contain substances such as nicotine that are ototoxic. This can damage your hearing and affect your balance. Various studies have shown that up to 7 in 10 smokers are more likely to develop some form of hearing loss compared to non-smokers. • Cotton buds – Many people love the feeling of clearing out their ears with a cotton bud but, despite feeling good, it may be doing you harm. Your inner ears are very sensitive and the ear drum is particularly delicate. By using any small objects to clean or scratch the ear, you are at higher risk of perforating the eardrum, which can cause intense pain and leave irreversible damage to your hearing. Your body will normally produce enough earwax to maintain health on its own, but if this becomes hard and compacted it can lead to problems such as loss of hearing, pain or discomfort. If this becomes the case, come in store and one of our audiologists can find the treatment that’s right for you. • Swimming – Taking a splash in the pool may not do any harm but accidentally leaving water in your ear afterwards could lead to swimmer’s ear. This is an infection that is caused by water making your outer ear canal moist - a perfect environment for bacteria to grow in. To treat swimmer’s ear, you’ll need to see your doctor and get prescription antibiotic eardrops. So make sure you dry your ears out thoroughly every time you swim. • Your favourite music – No, Ed Sheeran is not secretly making you deaf. However, how you’re listening to him and your other favourite artists could be. Most people know the best way to protect your ears at concerts without losing out is earbuds, but when you’re listening to music every day – on your commute to work or school, when browsing the web or even drifting off to sleep – you could be harming your hearing just with the type of headphones you’re listening through. Earbud headphones are placed much closer to the ear drum which can boost audio signals by up to nine decibels. To protect your hearing, change to traditional overhead headphones and ensure you can hear outside conversations.

Felixstowe and Sudbury Specsavers provide the most up-to-date and stateof-the-art technology to ensure customers are safe and sound. Both stores have the latest in ear screening equipment - a video otoscope (VO) that uses a tiny fibre-optic camera to see the condition of a person’s ear and provides them with a detailed colour photograph. Close examination of the ear canal and eardrum can often indicate ways to improve hearing clarity and, by using this latest advance in hearing technology, the process is easy and comfortable. The video otoscope can check: • Eardrum condition and infections • Ear canal problems and infections • Middle ear fluid • The level and build-up of wax in your ear Westly says: ‘This investment shows our commitment to providing our customers with the very best care. The video otoscope service is not routinely carried out elsewhere on the high street but it will be available to all having a hearing test in store with us.’ For more information or to book an appointment please call Specsavers Audiologists Felixstowe on 01394 288 080 or Sudbury on 01787 468 730

Divorce, your fault or mine? Currently if you wish to begin, and issue, divorce proceedings there needs to be a reason (or ‘ground’) relied upon. There are five possible grounds for divorce: 1) Adultery 2) Behaviour 3) Desertion 4) Two years separation with consent 5) Five years separation Parties are required to use a fault-based ground of either adultery or unreasonable behaviour if they have not been separated from each other for at least two years. This can lead to increased tension between the parties and make a once amicable separation not so amicable. It is well known that where parties are not amicable, the costs of separating can increase and coming to any agreement can become very difficult. There is more and more backing within the legal profession and the public for divorce to be allowed without the need to state the fault of one party or the other, known as no-fault divorce. In a recent case, Owens v Owens, this matter was discussed as it was felt that the behaviour listed on the Divorce Petition was not deemed ‘unreasonable’ enough to provide grounds for the divorce. It appears to be out dated and unfair to couples where their marriage has come to a natural end or where parties wish to remain as amicable as possible, but they are still expected to list reasons as to why they cannot be expected to remain in the marriage. This means that some couples remain married for two years so as to allow them to then issue proceedings on their two years separation. Parties can then not move on with their lives and finalise matters as quickly as they would like to. This is frustrating for everyone involved. The legal profession continue to push for no-fault divorce and one day this may indeed be available. If you are considering separation or divorce, it is recommended you seek advice from a specialist divorce solicitor who can advise you of your options and the best route forward. At Holmes & Hills Solicitors, we have a team of specialist divorce and family solicitors, one of whom, sue Wardropper, is based at our office in Sudbury. For your convenience, Holmes & Hills Solicitors in Sudbury can offer you an appointment to see a specialist divorce solicitor on a Saturday morning between 9:00am-13:00pm. Call 01787 275275 to book an appointment. 96 North Street, Sudbury. www.holmes-hills.co.uk 01787 275275.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk At this time of the year, as our towns and villages come alive with visitors, we are reminded of the importance of tourism to our local communities and economy. The constituency reaches from the undisturbed coastal beauty of the Shotley peninsula in the east, to Clare, one of our most distinctive wool towns, in the west. I have been working with groups from across South Suffolk who are coming together to raise the profile of their area. In Shotley, residents have been fundraising to regenerate their 122-year-old historic pier. As Suffolk's only remaining railway pier this project celebrates our coastal trading history and holds an ambitious vision for its future tourism offer. On the other side of South Suffolk, I recently attended the launch of the 'Visit Clare' initiative. By highlighting the wool trading history of Suffolk's smallest town, and linking with our other best preserved wool towns - Lavenham, Long Melford and Hadleigh - they are increasing the footprint of our area in the tourism market. Due to enormous wealth that surrounded the trade of wool in the 12th -15th centuries our wool towns are lined with timber-framed buildings and boast elegant churches. More recently, one of these streets famously made it into the final Harry Potter film. Now a major tourist attraction, the De Vere House in Lavenham is currently heralded as the second most photographed door in the UK, proceeded only by No.10! When you add these projects to the fantastic planned development of Gainsborough's House in Sudbury it is clear that our tourism sector is extremely vibrant. As a county, we are already attracting a high level of tourism with data showing that an estimated 52,000 holiday visits were made to Suffolk in 2016 by tourists from abroad. Compared to Norfolk for example, where there were 36,000 holiday visits in the same period, Suffolk is clearly working hard to attract individuals from around the world. In 2016 overseas visitors spent £62 million in Suffolk alone. In addition to our guests from further afield we also attract many hundreds of thousands of domestic tourists each year. By working together it is crucial that we continue to promote the bountiful and unique attractions of our area.

News from Sudbury Library The friends of Sudbury Library are pleased to arrange a series of talks for this Autumn. On the 7th September David Taylor will give us an illustrated talk on Exploring Iceland. On 5th October Anne Grimshaw will tell us of her experiences as a Librarian in Cowboy Country and on the 16th November Alain from the Secret Garden will be talking about food. All talks will be held in the Sudbury Library 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets are available in the Library for £5 per talk. Please remember that all money raised from our talks are spent in Sudbury Library. The children's reading scheme has proved to be very popular and there is till time to join if the holidays are dragging. The Children’s Library has had a leak following the recent rain, but the room is drying out and books are available in the main Library.

Waiting for a bus... Whoever said that you could wait ages for a bus then three would come along at once, certainly wasn't talking about services in Suffolk. Once again local people are faced with cutbacks in public transport as, from September the service between Great Cornard and Sudbury reduces from two buses an hour to one every 90 minutes. Once again, it's those without access to private cars, most notably the elderly and families with children who will be most affected. For those living in Great Cornard, getting to Sudbury’s long promised Health Centre will be made even more difficult, time consuming and expensive. Reliable and sustainable public transport is a vital component of the quality of life for many of us. It's high time Suffolk County Council as our local transport authority began to recognise this. Sudbury Mayor’s Report What a funny old month it's been, not least with the weather. I had the great pleasure of judging some of the amazing gardens in the Pride of Sudbury competition, being an avid gardener myself it was a joy to meet people with so much knowledge and skill in all aspects of gardening. Good luck to all! I had the honour of visiting the flying station at Wattisham. I learnt so much about Apache helicopters and got to speak to some of the inspirational guys who serve our country with such dedication and professionalism. Party in the park was a brilliant day. The feedback from visitors and stall holders was all good and I'd like to say a huge thank you to Ami, our town centre manager and all the staff that worked so hard to make this a safe and enjoyable event for all. I was very happy to assist with the launch of this years Memory Walk, at the Kingfisher. This year the walk will be on Saturday 7th October, and will be a chance for everyone, young and old to unite against dementia. I also visited my good friends at Hanover Court for their annual barbecue. We had a fabulous afternoon, and even the awful weather couldn't dampen the spirits! Now I must apologise to all those who wanted to attend the Mayors coffee morning in August. Out of the blue both our brilliant Town Clerk, Mrs Jacqui Howells and myself, suddenly needed urgent surgery and this event sadly had to be cancelled. Thank you so much to the staff at the town hall and Cllr. Sue Ayres, who have all be so supportive and helpful at this difficult time for us both. The next coffee morning will coincide with our Heritage Open Day, so do pop in and visit us at the Town Hall on Saturday 9th September - there will be lots to see and of course tea and cake! Sarah Page, Sudbury Town Mayor

Universal Credit: Advice From Sudbury Citizens Advice Universal Credit is a new benefit for people of working age who are on a low income. It is intended to be simpler than the current system of benefits and tax credits. In Sudbury and District single people without children can already claim Universal Credit, but from October 2017 all NEW CLAIMANTS will claim this benefit. Universal Credit replaces the following six existing benefits: • Income Support • Housing Benefit. • Working Tax Credit • Income-based Jobseekers’ Allowance • Child Tax Credit • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance If you are you already claiming benefits or tax credits you will not be affected yet unless your circumstances change. If they do you will be asked to claim Universal Credit. What's different about Universal Credit (UC)? • Your UC benefit will be paid monthly into your bank/building society account. • When making your claim you won’t be paid for the first 7 days, and will receive your first letter and payment after 6 weeks, but if in financial difficulty you can ask for an advance payment of some of the amount, but you will have to pay it back. • You will have to pay your rent directly to your landlord as any Housing Benefit you are entitled to will be paid directly to you. It is advisable to let your landlord know. • You won't be restricted to the number of hours you work, as the amount of benefit you receive will be adjusted to your earnings. • You are expected to claim UC online unless you have a good reason for not being able to do so, then you can apply by telephone (UC helpline on 0345 600 0723). Calls can be costly so ask if they will ring you back. To apply online go to www.gov.uk website and follow the link. You will also need a working email address. • Within a few days of submitting your application, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will contact you to arrange the interview. If you miss your interview, your application will be cancelled and you'll have to start again. • If you apply as a couple you will make a joint claim but only one person will complete the form and they will need to enter details for both of you. The UC payment will be paid in one amount to the partner who is nominate in your application. • Before you apply for Universal Credit you need to gather some information first. Don’t start the application until you have all these details for you and your partner, as your online session will time-out if you are inactive for more than 40 minutes, and you will have to start again. Check the details you need with the Job Centre . It is important to give the correct answers when completing your claim form as incorrect answers can delay payment of Universal Credit. If you don't understand any of the questions contact the helpline, don't make a guess. If you don't have a computer you can access one free of charge from your local Job Centre, Library, Council Offices or the Citizens Advice office. Sudbury Citizens Advice will be available for help so please contact us if you need it. We offer a drop-in service Monday to Friday 10-1pm and can also be contacted for advice on 03444 111 444 or by email: advice@sudburycab.org.uk. We also have an outreach advice session at the Council Offices in Corks Lane, Hadleigh on the last Wednesday morning of the month. www.sudburycab.org.uk

The events depicted across the pond always fill one with amazement. Our once proud colonists can always be relied upon to perform in an extreme and undignified manner. They should not have been granted independence until they had grown up. A bunch of idiots march through Charlottesville screaming racist abuse. A vile slander on the memory of those truly heroic young men who died fighting fascism on the beaches of Normandy. Then a mob of misnamed “liberals” decide vandalism is the only recourse and tear down the statue of Robert E Lee. What’s next, no memorials to slave owning George Washington or the president who authorised the dropping of the atomic bomb, Harry S Truman? And here, in the supposed cradle of democracy, we are seeing examples of revisionist history. At Rhodes College Cambridge, a small minority so, so fortunate to gain a place seek to rip down a memorial to its founder now deemed a colonialist. What next? Remove all reference to that great wordsmith Kipling (imperialist), ban performances of our wonderful bard’s “Merchant of Venice” (anti Jewish), tear down statues of Cromwell (Ireland) Richard 1 (Muslims) Air Marshall Harris (Dresden) etc. Deeming themselves liberals they should research the Nazi’s burning of the books when their fashionable ideology is offended by history. Those I have mentioned were of their time, must they be airbrushed from our past? While they are at it rip down the civic structures of our seaport cities, town and concert halls, financed from the profits of the slave trade. Once we enter this dangerous path think, where does it end? Some six years ago the electorate, by a sizable majority, voted for Babergh DC not to join with Mid Suffolk Council, after all we had lots of dosh in the kitty and they were virtually spent out. Now, knowing we have a short memory and are too thick to care, their Gauleiter and Chairperson has decided its time for that merger as a referendum is now no longer required. Although opposing councillors are against ignoring the will of their constituents she feels assured of the support of her fellow Tories for the move. However, not just a few are likely to break rank and obey the will of the people. It really matters not, it will happen anyway. A joint chief executive has been appointed, one Arthur Charvonia, at a salary of £110,000 plus pension etc. But the recruitment cost of £33,000 surely cannot be justified, considering he was poached from neighbouring Suffolk Coastal Council anyway. And I just can’t be bothered to research the cost in payouts and redundancy of the two executives he replaced. Just another example of local government proliferation. So our new Ipswich MP, Sandy Martin, has a fresh headline seeking initiative, an annual Pride Event in the town. I actually welcomed his election, finally a Labour MP in the Tory heartland of East Anglia. Not that politically I give a damn, a plague on both their disreputable houses, says I! Perhaps the festival will give our sadly depleted constabulary the opportunity to wear flowers in their helmets and for colourfully attired folk to parade through their somewhat dull streets for the benefit of a bemused populace. Dignitaries will attend in number with fixed smiles to prove to the electorate their “inclusiveness”. And, as in Sussex, police cars could be resprayed with suitable slogans. Well, why not, the local shops will be kept busy, restaurants flogging their wares, and florists peddling roses to be exchanged with all and sundry. Pubs will close for the day (Guinness not a chosen tipple) whilst wine bars sell organic produce from Greece or wherever. What delights await the folk of our county town. Meanwhile, here in God’s little acre we could organise the “Sudbury Fringe” as an alternative festival. Don’t get me wrong, this will also be an “inclusive” event. There will be a Ginger Parade (well, dye it if your not) with a carnivores barbeque on Market Hill. The councillors will meet the people, a unique event (with certain exceptions) and even buy a round. The pubs full dispensing local beers and all exchanging greetings and pleasantries in a dignified manner. My chum Bob Darvell signing copies of his latest book and all in a joyous and cordial atmosphere. And if you think I’m being silly remember Sandy Martin started it! Its enough to drive one to drink. Suffolk County Council Meeting The last meeting saw much debate over the large allowance increases to the Leader and cabinet members whilst the rest of the members were confined to a 1% increase. Although by reductions in some areas of existing allowance and fixed by an independent Panel, resulting in no additional costs, I personally could not support the proposals, I think if the staff have to abide by 1% increases we should show by example "we are all in it together" and spend the savings to the benefit of our taxpayers. The council has now moved over to a Cabinet Committee system that will involve more members in the decision making process. I have remained a member of the Development Committee, where I have been for the last twelve years or so. One dreads to think how the car parking situation will be dealt with when Babergh and Mid Suffolk move to Endeavour House, I got to Ipswich at Midday for a 2pm meeting and it took me 20 minutes to find a parking space, then it was on a visitors bay at Constantine House, more problems to come I fear. Suffolk County Council continues to raise awareness of Motor Neurone disease to support those living with the condition Suffolk County Council reiterated its support of the motor neurone disease (MND) charter at July’s Suffolk Health and Wellbeing Board Meeting, The MND charter is in support of local people living with this terminal disease and their carers. At the meeting, both Beccy Hopfensperger, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care, and Tony Goldson, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board, reiterated their support for the charter and asked the board for their support in increasing awareness of this disease. MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe. It kills around a third of people within a year of diagnosis, and more than half within two years. There is no cure. Little is understood about the disease and this contributes to many people not receiving the care and support they need. The MND Charter was launched to change this, comprising a number of rights for those with MND. Suffolk County Council, who committed to the charter in December after all councillors voted unanimously in favour of supporting it, is one of only 14 county councils to adopt the charter. As part of the charter, Suffolk County Council will promote the charter, campaigning to recruit volunteers to help support people affected by MND.

Join The Bridge around their new interactive Magic Table New to Sudbury’s The Bridge café this month is the installation of a Tovertafel, more commonly known as a Magic Table. Believed to be the only one in Suffolk that’s publicly available, The Bridge are inviting local residents to experience the new addition to their café. Designed to stimulate physical, mental and social activity, the table’s main purpose will be to promote well-being, as well as help engage those living with dementia and people with learning disabilities through a selection of interactive light games. Sitting alongside their existing offerings including a Paint Your Own studio, and a whole host of activities, the table will have a positive impact on the local community, as Jo Searle, CEO of Bridge Street, explains, “It’s a welcomed addition to our café that’s already full of activities for our local community to experience. We’re so pleased to be able to offer a way for those living with dementia and learning disabilities that encourages participation with their environment and others in a safe way.” The magic table will be open to everyone to explore and play with in the social setting of the café, and it will also be a unique offering for children’s birthday parties hosted by The Bridge. The Bridge are offering Sudbury and Long Melford Community News readers a voucher to get two scones for the price of one on Saturdays. It’s the perfect spot in Sudbury to sit and relax, or try your hand at painting your own pottery. And now with the Magic Table to experience, there’s plenty to get involved with at The Bridge for everyone. Use your voucher to enjoy a delicious scone from their new menu, and be sure to take advantage of their courtyard garden too. From Cars to Pars at Newton’s Golf Week

More than 500 entrants over six days again made the annual Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf a big success at Newton Green Golf Club. The week was given a major send off in the form of a veteran vehicle show, specially staged to mark the 110th birthday of the club. It was followed by a wide range of social golf matches aimed at embracing the whole club. It finished on Saturday night with golf week chairman Dora George hosting a presentation party after more than 120 golfers had taken by the Jonathan Lambert silver salver. A record 92 players for a shot gun start at Newton opened the 18-hole events for Tuesday’s Delaney Scramble, and a contingent just short of that number battled round as rain dominated the following days Stableford competition. With a justifiably unfavourable forecast for later in the day, a Foxes and Rabbits event had already been cancelled. The clouds gradually lifted for the rest of the week, and 12-handicapper Tim Richardson, with 42 points, put his name on the Saturday salver after previous near misses in other years. Generally, a blustery wind and a testing course set up, made scoring tough, although Alex Iveson managed to take the junior award with 39, including 26 on the back nine, and Gwyneth Ferreira the women’s best score with 35. In the gross score division, Carl Amos came home first with a creditable 72. Cross Country: 14 Gareth Evans, 12 Doug O’Hara, 11 Steve Knappett. Delaney Scramble: Amanda Rush, Susan Sills, Tim Richardson and Alan Vince. Stableford: George Bullett, Chris Williams, Sue Lockwood and Alex Iveson. Best Whag, Les Gridley; gent, Roger Hermiston; woman, Amanda Rush; junior Alex Iveson. Kiskadee: Sylvia Davis and Jamie Walter. Par Three: 26 Steve Knappett, 23 Peter Scott, 22 Chris Williams. Three clubs and putter: Terry Scurr, Nick Thomson and Adrienne Hughes. Jonathan Lambert Centenary Salver: 42 Tim Richardson; best women 35 Gwyneth Ferreira; best junior 39 Alex Iveson. Best gross score, 72 Carl Amos.
