LOYALTY SCHEME GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH! Thanks to very generous financial support from the Hadleigh Co-op the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce has been able to further extend their very successful Loyalty Card Scheme by printing and distributing a further 10,000 of the Loyalty Cards. The scheme is very simple, every time a purchase is made from one of the participating retailers listed below just ask for the card to be stamped and when you have filled the card with just 10 stamps return it to The Idler, 37 High Street, M. W. Partridge & Co., Hadleigh Co-op, Fergusons Delicatessen or Keith Avis Newsagents. There is no limit to the amount spent in a shop, or to the time the cards have to be entered into the draw. Nor does it matter how many cards you enter each month. Then each month a draw is made with a £50 cash prize for the lucky winner. By shopping in the High Street you are not only supporting the local

shops but also the small producers who supply the goods. A number are our near neighbours in the surrounding parishes Sponsored by Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce including Polstead, Layham, Lavenham, Capel, Acton, Sudbury and others from Suffolk villages further afield. The shops and producers also of course support the small businesses which help maintain services in the area from decorators, electricians to window cleaners. The money which is spent in the High Street goes back into the local economy unlike the majority of money spent in supermarkets which goes straight to their headquarters. ..Continued on page 2

Starting from Monday 8 April, there will be a different tasty treat each day for members and customers to try; from fruit juices, bakery products, dressings and Chinese curry sauces too chocolate, honey, chutney and jams, finishing with Adnams Ale on Saturday 13 April. Kevin Warden – East of England Co-operative Society, Local Souring Manager said “The tasting week will provide a fantastic opportunity for people to not only try some of the locally sourced products we have on offer in their store, but to meet some of our brilliant suppliers who have a real passion for creating high quality goods.” On Wednesday 10 April local Bee Keeper Michael Coe will once again be bringing along just a few of the bees which make the sweet Suffolk Honey available from the shelves. There will also be the opportunity to taste some of the honey straight from the honey comb. Common Spring Injuries – Are You Suffering? Finally the weather is showing promising signs that spring really is on the way... Hurrah! For many of us, the small rise in temperature is all we need to feel more active and energetic, coaxing us outside and into the fresh air. For some of us, that means starting the running you put off all winter or joining that local sports club to get fit. For others, it may mean you can finally get out into your garden and begin prepping for the summer ahead. Whatever you find yourself doing outside, there is a whole host of common injuries that you can guarantee will affect all of us at some point over the next few months. Whilst those partaking in sporting activities may suffer from sports-related injuries such as tight and pulled muscles from over-exercising or not cooling down correctly, shin splints or ankle injuries, the majority of us going about our everyday lives are still subject to an aching back from carrying children, tight shoulders from hours of weeding or niggling pains from an old injury. The good news is you don’t have to suffer with these problems! Sports massage is designed to loosen tight, sore or injured muscles allowing the body to repair and relax and allowing you to become comfortable again. Why not book yourself in for a sports massage with SMART MASSAGE and feel the benefits for yourself? To discuss your aches and pains and find out how sports massage could help you, call Kelly Tennick Dip.SM EEBW on 07722 521 114.

Boxfords Dynamic Fundraisers Reach New Heights Two years after abseiling the Ipswich Hospital tower block to raise money for charity. The Boxford trio of Julian, Veronica and Robert are back with their latest fundraising adventure on behalf of Boxford Village Hall. May 12th will see the trio walk over the Millennium Dome using a fabric walkway. At its highest point, the Dome stands at 52 metres high with the total walking distance in excess of 380 metres. The walk will involve an ascent and decent of up to 30 degrees. Once having started the climb they will not be able to come back down until they have completed the climb. This climb isn't for the faint hearted and will require them to be physically and medically fit. If you would like to sponsor the trio then please speak to either Julian, Veronica or Robert. Sponsor forms can also be found at Boxford News and in the Village Hall. Alternatively you can ring either 01787 211529 or 01787 210376

Our 2013 season is now well and truly under way, and this year we are featuring FREE Community Workshops and Hobby Courses as well as Professional Timber Frame repair courses. Our FREE workshops covering basic woodworking skills with Tom Castell on 13 and 27 April are just about fully booked, but if you are keen to attend please do get in touch. In June (1st, 8th and 29th) and July (6th) we are pleased to have Helen Woodbridge showing how to make chairs and benches for our teaching area from coppiced wood, and helping you develop these skills for yourself. Again, these free workshops are proving very popular, so if you are interested please let us know. All workshops run from 10am to 4.30pm on Saturdays at Orchard Barn, Far Ringshall. OBee are just back from demonstrating Wattle and Daub at Ecobuild. We were delighted to be invited to take Suffolk clay and coppiced Hazel rods to this exhibition in London and show visitors from all over the UK how traditional building methods tick all the eco and sustainable build boxes imaginable (whilst having a huge amount of fun making the daub using human-welly power). Whilst we are on the subject of traditional building, our 3-day Traditional Carpentry course runs from 17 to 19 June, with Rick Lewis. At half our usual price it works out at £135 and is suitable for beginners and improvers. Learn how to make and fit 17th century style barn doors from air-dried, local oak planks. If money is an issue, there’s always plenty for our volunteers to do, whilst keeping fit and enjoying the lovely barn and orchard. In April and May we will be meeting on Wednesdays to practice a broad range of conservation skills from Earth Render to Pargeting using Cob, and also some site maintenance on Saturdays 20th April and 11th May. As always, please do contact Sarah in advance if you would like to come along and help out. New volunteers are always very welcome – no experience needed. For more information, or to attend any events, please contact Sarah at sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or 01473-658193/ 07766054042 More information can be found on our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline Mid Suffolk Link As the 2013 visit of the children approaches again this year we are once more appealing for donations of clothing. These children really do arrive with nothing except the clothes they travel in so if anyone has anything that they could donate to these children 12 girls and 8 boys, requiring clothes of sizes 6 to 13, we would be very grateful. Summer and Winter clothes are appreciated as although they visit us in the summer they return home to winters that often are as cold as minus 37! When this article goes to publication four of the Charities representatives will be in Belarus where we will have the opportunity of meeting with the children who have been selected by the local authorities and their families. As no children have travelled from this area before many of the parents are very concerned as they do not know where or to whom their children are going. Our job will be to explain our program and reassure them that their children will be looked after as part of the family they will join. As previously we are also hoping to send each child home with a shoebox full of basic medicines and would welcome donations of any of the following items: Good quality plasters, Blister plasters, Lemsips, Lip Chap Sticks, Sore Throat Pump Spray, Strepsils, Menthol Nasal Sticks, Cold Sore cream, Mouth Ulcer Cream (must be for children) Decongestant Capsules or drops, Drapolene Cream. Donations can be dropped at the Charity Shop in Needham Market High Street (please state they are for the children) or call me on 01449 760343 if you need to arrange a collection. Thank you to all who support us, we could not do this without YOU! Elizabeth Parker, Link Chair

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard at Paramount Centre Point London The Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce has now climbed off the fence and has rightly decided that another supermarket in Hadleigh is not in the Town’s best interests. I attended a large meeting of the Chamber a couple of weeks ago. A representative from Babergh District Council sought to persuade us that the District Council is taking measures to promote the Town and its commerce. I have seen little evidence of that and suspect that the manpower at Babergh District Council dealing with the Tesco application outweighs those promoting the Town many times over. I believe that a Tesco would almost cause the ruination of the Town as we know it since neither the Co-Op or the small shops are likely to survive. As I mentioned in my last column Hadleigh’s shops offer you a good service and quality goods – please use your Town. As it has been so miserable, I treated myself to a foray to London. This was another job for my long distance chauffeur Christof. How one is meant to manage in London without a chauffeur heaven-alone knows – parking is dreadful. I felt very trendy as I enjoyed dinner at Paramount on the top of Centre Point in New Oxford Street some 33 floors up. The view was amazing and I spent an hour in the bar at the top of the building just taking in the sights from all sides. What a treat. The picture (a little dark) shows me by one of the windows. The correct answer for our Competition is that I have been qualified for 27 years. I can still remember the excitement of receiving my Certificate from the Law Society. Whilst the job today is terribly demanding, I am a professional and am pleased to be able to offer the benefit of that to you. I had many entries but the winner of our Competition is Linda Johnson of Lavenham (in the nether regions of the magazine’s circulation) and I will have pleasure in presenting her with a bottle of Champagne. Well done Linda. Several people have telephoned me recently to say that they have been cold-called by will making firms; that they have made Wills and have agreed to pay monthly storage charges and sums towards administration fees for their estate after they have died all of which amounted to tidy sums. These Will writers are largely unregulated. Why not contact us and receive good old-fashioned service. It is quite important also that you should consider putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney in order that someone can administer your affairs during your lifetime should you lose the ability to do so yourself. Thanks to years of research we know a lot about how animals communicate with each other. Most communication is silent, involving body language and scents that animals leave in the environment. Understanding communication is key to understanding why animals behave as they do, and what we can do about problems with behaviour. Problems with animal behaviour are very common In the UK it is estimated that nearly 140,000 people are bitten by dogs every year. However, behavioural problems are not limited to aggression. Many dogs are anxious when left alone and can become destructive, this is known as separation anxiety. Some dogs have problems with house soiling, and others may be anxious in certain environments, including the vets. Historically, it has been considered that dominance is a factor in dog behaviour. Recent research has shown that the concept of dominance between dogs is outdated and oversimplified. There are other factors to be considered such as the dog’s previous experiences; if they feel threatened by the situation they are in, if there is involvement of important resources. It is important to remember that cats are not small dogs! They have different social structures, and this affects the way they interact with each other and with us. Unlike dogs, most cats are not pack animals and like to have their own space, and if multiple cats have to share the same environment (be that the same house, the same street, or sometimes even the same village!) this can cause behavioural problems including fighting or soiling in the house. These can often be overcome with careful management, but time and patience are needed. Prevention is better than cure Before you even get your new pet, consider the ideal breed, age and size. Different types of dogs have different requirements regarding exercise and the amount of space they require, and their natural behaviours. It is never too early to start basic training and early socialisation of puppies is vital; the more positive experiences your puppy can have at a young age, the more likely they are to become well adjusted adults. Consideration needs to be given to their vaccinations when taking them out. When determining the causes of behavioural problems it is vital that medical causes are ruled out Changes in behaviour can be seen with hormone related conditions (such as thyroid conditions), with neurological disease (especially those affecting the brain), and with any illness or injury that causes pain. If you are concerned about your pet’s behaviour then your vet should be your first port of call for advice. Often vets will work in conjunction with trained behaviourists to help you manage the problem. Treatment for behavioural problems usually centres on behaviour modification by training techniques, but can also involve medication and various behaviour and training aids. 96 High Street, Hadleigh, IP7 5EN Telephone 01473 822704 www.highcliffvets.com

Hollow Trees Farm Robert and Sally Bendall are the third generation to farm at Hollow Trees, a 140-acre farm where the emphasis is on involving visitors - there's a Farm Trail, Plant Centre and of course an award-winning farm shop where the vegetables are picked daily, the meat is home-reared and there is home-baked bread together with local and regional foods. Firstly are you Suffolk born and bred Sally? Dare I say No but nearly? I was actually born in Cheltenham and came to Suffolk when I was 5 years old when my Dad took over a small farm in Bradfield st George near Bury st Edmunds. What did you do immediately after leaving school?
Designer Home Heating
I went to work on a local dairy farm, milking cows and looking after calves. I then went back to work on the family farm, milking cows again. I’m glad to say my favourite drink is milk!
We have the largest display of designer radiators and towel rails in the South East
How and where did you meet husband Robert?
12 High Street Hadleigh Suffolk IP7 5AP Tel: 01473 828914 Email: nevelli@virgin.net www.nevellidesignerradiators.co.uk
At Chadacre Agricultural College near Bury St Eds where I was a student and Robert taught me tractor driving! I passed the course and later I went on to met him again at my brother’s wedding where he was an usher and I was a bridesmaid! At what point did you decide to diversify from fully working farm to include the successful farm shop side of your business and why? It was in the mid 80s when we looked at our financial accounts and realised that we would be bankrupt if we didn’t do something different soon. Conditions and circumstances for small farms like ours were not good and the future was not bright. However ,at the time the roadside table on the farm selling potatoes and eggs was always popular so that year I asked Robert for a small hut for my Christmas present so could start a farm shop in it. That was the start of our diversification and The Egg Shed in the current farm shop is a replica of that first shop, just to remind us of those times! I know that you hold and run many, many educational visits for school children and students at Hollow Trees, why is this so important to you?

For many, many reasons! I really enjoy working with children and students of all ages and farming is a so full of interesting and exciting things to pass on. We need to inspire farmers of the future and we need to show consumers openly and honestly just how we produce their food. I think we are very privileged to work in such a diverse industry. I also believe you are a Governor of Otley College, what would you say to a young person contemplating attending one of the courses there? Otley College merged with Easton College in Norfolk last August so it is now just one college called Easton & Otley College. We have a campus in Norfolk and the one at Otley and I am now actually Chairman of the board of Governors of the new college. I would advise anyone contemplating a course to try a Taster Day Event or an Open Day at Otley or Easton – since being involved in the colleges I have been amazed at how much is on offer for students within their courses and way beyond. Take up all those offers of advice and support. With the recent horsemeat scandal still in the news, have you found that people now really want to know where the food they eat comes from? Yes it is a big topic of conversation in the shop at the moment and a good opener for us to highlight our home grown meat and veg! Tell us about your proudest achievement at Hollow Trees Employing a team of 50 people on a small 140 acre farm is quite an achievement but I am always really proud of our teenage team members and love to hear what they have achieved when they move on to college, uni, work and life. We have employed hundreds of youngsters over the years. It’s really nice to know that Hollow Trees may have played a little part in shaping the future of these young people. Generally we employ about 20 students all year round. Most start at the age of 15 with us and hopefully stay on board for many years. We watch them grow up and progress and move on. In fact five former students are now part of our full time team! Also winning NFU Best Farm Shop in the country a few years ago. Having gone through the regional heats it was a great achievement for all our team and supporters to be a National winner .

I have heard it said that farmers are only the guardians of their land for the next generation, how do you see Hollow Trees evolving in the next 20 years? Hopefully over the next 20 years we can continue to do what we do but do it better! I hope we can pass Hollow Trees Farm onto our children as a sustainable farm and
business. Robert has planted thousands of trees on the farm in recent years so it may become the Semer Forest in the future !
The Edwardstone White Horse
What is the funniest thing to have happened to a child on your famous farm trail? Really difficult to answer as so many funny things have happened over the years and its times like this I wish I had written them down! My own five year old daughter in a tantrum on the farm trail telling me she was so “stressed with having a farm and Halloween to deal with and I really didn’t know what that was like .... When (if!) you finally retire, if money was no object, what would you really like to do? The answer to this changes every day - At this moment - fly off and find some dry weather sunshine! Tomorrow - write children farm story books, yesterday – have a small herd of pedigree cattle. I really would like to have my own helicopter and have the freedom to fly anywhere instantly. What three character traits would your friends use to describe you? I have been described by some friends as stubborn, ‘useful at times’ and mad but the friends that are still on my Christmas card list say I’m fair, focussed and caring! What is your idea of a good night in? And on the flip side what is Robert’s idea of a good night in! My idea of a good night is for me is to actually have the TV remote control to myself, a good film to watch (without interruption ) and a glass of wine or two. Roberts idea of a good evening would probably be watching a programme on Dave or Quest about how to make or dismantle something – drinking a cold beer of course! And finally, we all want to know, who’s the real boss, you or Robert! When you have all decided - let me know - I will ask the boss for a pay rise! Thankyou Sally, your answers have reminded me, you actually once employed my son in a very demanding position at Hollowtrees for some years - I think he was the ‘Bogert’ at ‘Holloween’! Kelvin.

Local resident Abigail Franklin is about to bring fun and dance to Sudbury and the surrounding areas, by creating a new generation of ballet stars. The awardwinning babyballet Song and Dance Academy takes children from 6 months of age, and the emphasis is firmly placed on fun by use of props such as musical instruments, magic wands, catchy songs and the fabulous lovable babyballet mascots ‘Twinkle the Bear’ and her cousin ‘Teddy’. Abigail began dancing herself at the age of four and has never stopped! She has enjoyed a successful career as a professional performer and has spent most of the last 12 years touring the UK, performing in children’s shows. Abigail now feels that it is time to pass on her enthusiasm and dance knowledge. “I felt that there was a real lack of dance based classes aimed at this age group in the local area and I decided to do something about it. I firmly believe that babyballet is a perfect way of teaching children (male and female) confidence, co-ordination and social skills from a young age. In a world where we are encouraging children to grow up to be fit and healthy, babyballet is the perfect place to start.” Babyballet Song and Dance Academy is already a national hit with boys, girls and parents right across the country, and Abigail is very excited to be able to offer this to the local community. Classes are fully interactive, encouraging everyone that comes along to have fun in the relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere. Classes start at the end of April and must be booked in advance. Book by April 5th to receive 1/3 off the price of a 3 week introductory course (Usually £15). To register your interest please email sudbury@babyballet.co.uk or call Abigail on 01787 211491
Layham Concerts AS SEEN ON..
Last year the Friends of St Andrews Church Layham arranged a concert in the church and announced their intention to reintroduce the Music in Layham concert series if the idea seemed well supported. It seems that was the case because a date has been set for a second concert on 20th April stating at 7pm. There will however be a change in musical style as the featured artists this time will be Rance's Rocking Chiar Band playing tradional style jazz

Discover Suffolk in 52 ways over 23 Days – The Suffolk Walking Festival Saturday 11th May sees the launch of the 2013 Suffolk Walking Festival, at Ickworth House in Bury St Edmunds. Now in its sixth year, the festival will offer over 50 guided walks covering the whole of the county, from Lowestoft, England's most easterly point in the north of the county, to the Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the south. The festival runs from 11th May to 2nd June and aims to encourage people to visit the county and enjoy its gently undulating landscapes. There will be strolls through medieval villages, rambles in the countryside and a five day 'challenge walk' for the brave of heart and sturdy of leg, that stretches along the fabulous Suffolk coast. The festival is a joint venture involving all the Suffolk local authorities and it is sponsored by the Discover Suffolk Project, whose objectives include improving access to the countryside and encouraging walking and cycling in the county. The Discover Suffolk Challenge Walk is a series of five walks, following the entire length of the Suffolk Coast Path, covering nearly 70 miles in 5 days. The walk passes through Aldeburgh and the pretty coastal town of Southwold, the iconic heathland landscape of National Trust Dunwich, reaching the seaside resort of Lowestoft at South Pier. There will be pauses at various points along the way to learn about local history and see the sights, including the Suffolk Punch Trust at Hollesley and Snape Maltings, home of Aldeburgh music, which this year sees the centenary celebrations of composer Benjamin Britten. There are many themed walks throughout the festival too, including a textile walk through fields of flax, a poetry walk, celebrating Suffolk's artistic heritage and a children's 'welly walk' through the grounds of the Museum of East Anglian Life. For the first time, there will also be a charity walk, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care – a 14 mile walk through the lovely landscape of the Lark Valley. The festival is a great opportunity for a walking holiday in Suffolk and the county has a fantastic range of accommodation including deluxe hotels, country B&Bs, cosy cottages and everything in between. Accommodation links can be found on the walking festival pages of the Discover Suffolk website. Tickets for the festival can be bought at any Suffolk Tourist Information Centre or online at www.discoversuffolk.org.uk
Gill joins Third Women’s Cancer Challenge Retired hairdresser Gill Dutton is taking positive action in the fight against breast, ovarian and cervical cancer, by taking on a 400 km cycle challenge in Cuba, later this year. Gill, who is in her 60’s, is part of an amazing group of women from all over the country, tackling the third Women V Cancer challenge. The women-only team of cyclists will be challenging themselves to support the work of three charities: Breast cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. Women of all ages and cycling abilities will be taking part in the 400 km undulating cycle challenge, over five days, both on and off road. They will experience rural Cuba away from the usual tourist trails. It will be a journey full of fun, friendship and incredible support, as women of all ages, from all walks of life come together for this very good cause and incredible personal challenge. Gill has been working hard with various fund raising events as she needs to raise a minimum of £2,900 to support the work of the Women V Cancer Charities and she is asking local people and companies to please help her reach her target! She will be paying all her own travel expenses, food and accommodation costs, so that your donations go straight to the charities, so please donate whatever you can afford, however little. Ovarian cancer awareness Coffee Morning in Monks Eleigh A coffee and cakes morning was held on Thursday 14th March 2013 in Monks Eleigh when many delicious cakes were eagerly devoured by those who attended. A tombola added to the fun and most people went home with a prize or two. The event was held to mark “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” and to raise funds for the charity “Target Ovarian Cancer”. A total of £219.10 was made. Lovis Passfield-Taylor, who organised the event, said it is crucial that women can recognise the early symptoms of ovarian cancer which are often quite vague and to this effect leaflets were made available for those there and to be distributed.

Glenn gets on her bike for charity! President of the Rotary Club of Hadleigh, Mrs Glenn Abbassi, will be undertaking a 500km (approx 312 miles) sponsored cycle ride in aid of the charity Mines Advisory Group. MAG works in current and post-conflict zones to clear landmines and destroy weapons. It is currently removing lethal remnants of war in 15 countries. MAG makes land safe for farmers to cultivate, for children to walk to school, and for families to live without fear. The ride, between the 18th and 23rd June, involves cycling from London to Paris, taking in Normandy landing beaches, Arromanches and Pegasus Bridge, and WWII sites to commemorate D-Day 2013. Readers may recall that Glenn was fully (!) prepared for the ride last year, but unfortunately there were insufficient participants to make the event worthwhile. This year 25 cyclists are committed to the cycle ride so training is in progress (albeit presently on the bike at the gym!). If any readers would be kind enough to support her effort (the target is £1,800), this can be done by texting 70070, enter code KVCO89 and donate an amount. There is also a Just Giving page which can be accessed by putting the name Glenn Abbassi in Sponsor a Friend.

Spring was definitely in the air this morning at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare in Stoke Road, Leavenheath. The girls were busy, sorting more goodies for the next Jumble Sale on Saturday 20th April, at the Stevenson Centre in Cornard. While they worked, I went outside to see one of my new doggy friends, Trixie, a brindle Staffy. She is less than two years old and loves going out for walks with the volunteers, but she hates being in kennels and longs for a new owner to give her lots of cuddles. Another recent canine pal, Charlie, is Trixie a very friendly three year old Collie/Staffy cross. He is neutered and desperately wants to be with people - Dawn says he is in danger of losing his tail if he wags it much more. You know I get on with all the animals that come to SESAW for help (including the cats!) but I particularly want to see these two re-homed because they have so much to give. They both became homeless through no fault of their own, (Trixie was due to be put down) and yet they bear no grudge. Some of our supporters are planting seeds and preparing cuttings ready for the Leavenheath Open Gardens day on Sunday 23rd June. The sun is still shining so I’ll help by digging up the garden. I must find that bone a well wisher brought in last week. Thank you to all the kind people who still ask after me, Kenny (The Boss) Chihuahua.

Kersey Mill Newsletter Spring has arrived as work continues to be undertaken around the mill. Plans are moving slowly but surely towards restoration with on-going talks with English Heritage and Chris Hullcoop of the Suffolk Mill Trust. Works have been carried out by volunteer Mark Mitchell to the Tail Race to clear debris and years of silt to allow the water to flow freely away. Gabion baskets have been made onsite and installed to prevent further erosion of the banks to the Tail Race. On a very cold Sunday morning with the help of two local volunteers, Callum Davies and Gary Barnes, work was carried out to see if the wheel could be made to work again and assess the extent of the damage to the underside of the wheel and Race. Water was pumped out from under the wheel after stop planks and sand bags were placed to stop the river water and some interesting finds were made. What was first thought to be the original cast iron sluice gate may well be the directional plate to force the water onto the wheel blades. This would suggest the design of the wheel is based on the Poncelet design developed by the Frenchman Jean-Victor Poncelet whilst he worked at the École d'Application in Metz. Soon after 1838 his design was being used as it improved efficiency by 50% on slow rivers in France and Germany so was quickly adapted for use on the Norfolk and Suffolk slow flowing rivers. A large Lime tree stood close to the wheel shed and was the cause of subsidence and cause of a fracture appearing at the west corner. Once inspections and investigations were made the tree was cut down to save the wheel house and part of the mill from damage caused by the tree falling, a limb dropping off, or just the roots causing further heave damage. It was discovered the tree was rotten through two thirds of the core and in a very dangerous state. As the roots return to nature the wall should drop back in place and then with careful placement of ties and stitching the fracture will be almost invisible and the mill will once again be safe. Sue Perry has an opportunity to exhibit her bird paintings in Norfolk in the popular Georgian market town of Holt, a well known East Anglian tourist attraction with some prestigious art galleries. Sue has lived most of her life in Suffolk, growing up in the village of Elmsett. She attended Hadleigh High School where she developed a keen interest in art. She left school in 1987 and followed her other love, which is animals, and has been working at Highcliff Veterinary Practice for the last 26 years, mainly as a nurse, latterly becoming a receptionist. Painting has always been her hobby and her love of nature clearly shows in her work. Her prime subject to draw and paint is birds and she has become a keen birder in her spare time. Her main medium is watercolour to create very detailed work but she also enjoys using pencil. Sue has been exhibiting locally for over twenty years, starting with a local gallery in Hadleigh and continuing at various local other venues including St Marys Church Exhibition as well as Bildeston and Stoke by Nayland Church exhibitions. She has been a regular contributor to the Art Exhibition at the Hadleigh Show for the last ten years, being featured artist in 2011. She sits on the Art Exhibition Committee and is one of the stewards at the Show. Her work was so well received at the Picturecraft Gallery at Holt that she is now able to extend her coverage across the region by having some space provided to display her ever expanding range of birdlife. Her work goes on display there from April 11th to May 8th and we wish her continued success. Sue still paints from her home in Elmsett where her conservatory studio overlooks her many bird feeders. A selection of greeting cards depicting Sue’s paintings are available all year round from Keith Avis, 68 High Street, Hadleigh

Actions - Not Thoughts Most people are very good at thinking about being slim, planning to be slim, working out how much weight they’d need to lose each week to achieve their goal. Every new diet on the market is the one “that will work this time”. They’ll start on Monday (they can’t start before Monday because…..!) and, of course, they’ll stick to this new miracle diet come hell or high water! Will they..? But instead of thinking about reducing your weight what are you actually doing about it? You really want to reduce your weight, but you go on a big binge (because you’ve decided that Monday’s the day you’ll start), so where’s your commitment, your motivation? So many people talk about being slim but the fact is you do have to do the 'hard work' for a while..! You can ready every book on diets and do as much research as you like but at some point, if you REALLY WANT it, there is no choice – you have to do it! It’s really hard work pretending to be losing weight, finding all those excuses – why is it so much easier to find excuses rather than putting that energy into something you say you want so much…? The key thought to this diet madness is not which diet you choose, it's not what day you start or whether you eat more carbs than protein or don't eat after 6.36pm…it's motivation!! It comes down to how much you really want to be slim and whether you'll let nothing and nobody stand in your way of having what you really want. Will you? If you would like individual help with a weight problem, Val Lord has been an accredited Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant for 4 years and can be contacted on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645. A warm welcome awaited the Judges of the Hadleigh Show Catalogue cover competition at Hintlesham Golf Club on a snowy March evening. Over 200 Please call 01206 263420 entries had been received from 9 local or email me at trevordodwell@aol.com primary schools for this year’s competition, with children between the ages of 4 and 11 submitting colourful and creative pictures on the theme of ‘Spring at the Hadleigh Show’. The judges for the 2013 competition were Mr Andrew Macdonald (Head Teacher of Langham Primary School), Mrs Nicola Currie (Chairman of Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association), Dr Rebecca English (Member of the Hadleigh Show Schools Liaison Committee) and Mrs Debbie Roblin of Hintlesham Golf Club. The judges eventually chose a colourful entry from Poppy Bennett of Hadleigh Community Primary School as the winner. Poppy is lucky enough to win a family ticket to the Show, with 30 runners up all winning childrens tickets. The winning entry will soon be seen on the front cover of the show programme and the runners up will all be on display in the Education Tent on show day. HFAA Schools liaison officer, Mrs Julie Girling said “We were thrilled to with the number of entries and the art work was particularly colourful this year. Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Forging Links with Ghana This half term Miss Macey (Music) and Miss Rowland (Geography) took a trip out to our partner school in Ghana. The aim of this trip was to forge links with the school and finally reach a shared education programme. Miss Rowland said how different it was from our She also school in so many ways. commented on how they were greeted with the warmest of welcomes. Pupils have been able to share in this exciting experience by watching the film, in assemblies, that Miss Macey and Miss Rowland made out there. Harry and Hollie, Teen Stars! Harry Forbes and Hollie Gregg of Year 10 have recently entered a musical talent competition known as Teen Stars. The duet, with Harry playing his guitar and Hollie singing, began playing together in a band known as Nuclear Winter, last year. Since becoming a duet they have composed three completely original songs and reached the second round of the Teen Star competition. The first round was held in front of a panel of judges; Harry and Hollie were one of 72 acts, of which only 31 progressed to the regional finals. The regional finals were held in front of an audience of 500 people; Hollie and Harry along with 8 other acts progressed to the Area finals. The Grand Final will be held at the O2 arena with a prize of £20000! We all wish Harry and Hollie the best of luck to and you can help them progress by liking their Facebook page to increase their publicity. Challenging Maths On the 1st March the maths department took four students to Framlingham College to compete in a Team Maths Day. The students involved where Eloise Cairns and Adam Morsman from year 8 and Kristie Airlie and Luke Robinson from year 9. These students have performed excellently in Maths lessons and came 11th out of 21 teams which included some of the top schools in the area. World Maths Day on Wednesday 6th March was a day where pupils from around the world competed in an online maths competition. First, the pupils had to choose a difficulty level and they would then play against three other pupils from around the globe, including South Africa, Australia, Russia and Qatar in a round of quick fire mental maths questions. From Hadleigh High, the highest scoring boy and girl were Ranulf Gull (7M) and Georgie Alger (7T) from year seven, and from year eight: Daniel Shanks (8A) and Melissa Whadcoat (8M). We would like to congratulate all of the pupils that took part on World Maths Day. EPQ: A Great Success Recently we received the results for the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) undertaken by four of our talented Year 11 pupils. The EPQ is a qualification at an equivalent level to an A level and is usually undertaken by talented 6th Form students. The school decided a year ago, that a number of Year 10 pupils should undertake this challenge. As a result, we piloted the EPQ with four pupils with obvious talent in English: Abbie Brown, Kate McIntosh, Shelley Manning and Collette Motteram. All started the project at the start of Year 10 – two years earlier than most students. The girls showed fantastic commitment by attending two and a half hour long tutorial sessions every Friday after school for a whole year. The qualification requires students to research and write a 7000 word long dissertation which had a focus on the topic of ‘childhood in literature’, as well as giving formal presentations and keeping a journal of their learning. We are delighted to announce that between them, the girls achieved 2 A grades and 2 B grades. This is extraordinary when one takes into consideration that the students completed 80% of the qualification in Year 10, rather than during their time at Sixth Form. The qualification was a huge challenge for the students and required complete dedication and hard work, but the skills they gained will benefit them for the rest of their lives; these included the ability to learn independently and evaluate their own work. In addition to this they have gained a large number of UCAS points which are used to help allocate places in Universities. We are very proud of the students’ achievement and know that the whole process will be an excellent experience for their progression to Sixth Form and beyond. This year a number of Year 10s are undertaking the qualification, in both English and Science. The science students are researching and performing experiments in order to produce scientific papers on the general subject of genetics. Some of the aspects being investigated by the students include how genetic and environmental factors affect an individual’s school grades and how genetic modification of bacteria can be used to benefit medical research and the agricultural industry. The English students began by studying loneliness which has led them on to topics such as monsters, fear and social class. This year’s results are credit to the hard work put in by both Mr Day, Mr Quinn and, of course, the girls. We are confident that the present English students, as well the

Science students supported by Miss Blyth and Mrs Scanlon, will replicate the achievement this year. Art Trip On the 24th March, all the Year 10 Art GCSE students are going on a field trip to Aldeburgh. Here they will be observing the famous Scallop situated on the beach of Aldeburgh that was sculpted by Maggie Hamblin- and was inspired by the operas of Benjamin Britten. The students will sketch the scenery of Aldeburgh to gain inspiration for their final piece in their topic- Oceans. What a Mastermind! The winner of our annual school Book Mastermind competition, Eloise Cairns, went through to represent our school at the School Library Service Book Mastermind Area Final. This was held at Thomas Gainsborough High School in Great Cornard. Eloise chose to answer questions about the book “Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief” by Rick Riordan, as well as participating in a General Knowledge round. Altogether, approximately 30 schools took part in the Area Finals, with 8 pupils making it through to the County Final. Eloise put in a fantastic performance and with 26 points won her Area Final, and will therefore go on to represent our school in the County Final. Good luck Eloise! Red Nose Day at Hadleigh High School Our School always makes a big effort to support charities such as Comic Relief. This year we had a cake sale and charity gig which saw performances from ‘Hollie and Harry’ and Zoe Lewis, an ex pupil. It was organised by year 10 Health and social care students and Miss Macdonald. Recently the students have had a large amount of coursework which has lead up to this event. The students fully took control of the event and planned it all themselves including refreshments, tickets and finance. They decided that because many of them have experienced the effect of Alzheimer’s in their families they would also raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. Around 50 people watched and it was a very successful and well organised event. Year 11 Mock Interviews On the 26th February and 5th March all Year 11 pupils had the opportunity to experience a real life interview with a local employer. Prior to the interview the students created CVs and composed a letter to the interviewer explaining why they wanted the job. There were approximately 10 interviewers in total, including an ex nurse, a police officer, a representative from the Babergh District Council, a ambassador from Celotex and a spokesperson from Copella Apple juice. All the students said they enjoyed taking part in the day and found it very helpful. Production As always the school hosted an amazing production and this year it was ‘Guys and Dolls.’ The performance was a sell out on all three nights when audiences came to see the amazing acting that our school can produce. The main leads were performed by Sophie Gurden as Sgt. Sarah Brown, Adam Earl as Sky Masterson, Luke McGhee as Nathan Detroit and Bethan Garrity as Adelaide. We all look forward to an amazing performance next year. Winter Sports With the winter sporting season drawing to a close, the success of the school’s sports teams is clear to see. Possibly the biggest success this year has been the Year 10 hockey team, which has been unbeaten all season. The Year 11 hockey team has also had a good season, losing only 2 games. This is an incredible achievement as it is actually made up of many Year 9 and 10s. The Year 9 rugby team has been very successful, winning the Suffolk Plate. The team has now progressed to the Final of the Plate for Eastern Counties where the students will play the plate winners from Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. The Year 8 rugby team has also advanced to the next round of their tournament, and the 10 and 11 sides are yet to know. After a brilliant year last year, the Year 10 netball team was promoted into the A league. The students have come up against some strong opponents, but have still managed to pull out some wins! A Clever production! On the 11th march Year 9 students watched an innovative production of Romeo and Juliet by the touring company Box Clever. The students found it was very interesting, and contemporary in style, which made it more enjoyable. The play was done on a very simple set, only a red sofa, which all the students found effective in the way they used it to represent a variety of places ranging from Juliet’s balcony to the Capulet tomb. The students said that the characters were friendly and very chatty before they performed, and found their comments in the workshop that followed interesting and educational. Cross Country The All England Schools Cross Country Championships were held at Buxton in Derbyshire on 16th March. Alex Baxter finished 64th in the Junior Boys race. He is currently Year 8 and was running against mostly Year 9 boys. He was the 1st Suffolk runner to finish in his race. Jasmine Hayward finished 259th in the Inter Girls race. She is the first girl from Hadleigh High School to represent Suffolk at Cross Country for many years. The previous week Alex Baxter ran for Suffolk AAA’s and finished 80th in this Inter Counties held in Birmingham. Well done to both of our runners.
Open Days in Hadleigh to help those with hearing loss One in six people in UK have a hearing problem, and if you think this sounds familiar there is a special event taking place in Hadleigh. Hearing tests and professional advice are being made available free of charge this week to encourage people to take that first step. Local hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, have a hearing centre within the Health Centre, Market Hadleigh audiologist Michael Shade Place, Hadleigh. Tesco report conflicted, claims Green Party An official complaint has been made against the planning consultants who were hired to produce a report into Tesco’s plans for the former Brett Works site in Hadleigh. Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP) was commissioned by Babergh District Council to produce an independent report into Tesco’s planning application. But NLP advertises on its website that Tesco is a major client. It states: “Our role involves assisting Tesco to deliver new and extended stores across the UK, from ‘Extra’ stores in complex town centre developments, to ‘Express’ convenience stores. NLP also updates Tesco on changes in planning policy and advises on implications for their trading operations and development aspirations.” Robert Lindsay, a Bildeston parish councillor and co-ordinator of Babergh Green Party, has lodged a complaint with the Royal Town Planning Institute, the watchdog for professional planners, saying that NLP consultants have breached their code of conduct. Mr Lindsay said: “The Institute tell me the matter will be heard in April. In the mean time I do hope Babergh councillors appreciate that the independence of this report is in question.” NLP’s report says that the impact of a Tesco store in Hadleigh, when combined with the new Morrisons, will not damage the “vitality and viability” of Hadleigh. This is despite saying the two super stores would make it more likely that the Co-op and two other independent stores on Hadleigh High Street will be forced to close. Mr Lindsay added: “The report says nothing about the effect Tesco and Morrisons will have on village shops and farm shops in the Hadleigh catchment area. “It also ignores the fact that smaller, independent shops are better for the local economy than national supermarket chains with City shareholders to please.” NLP has insisted that where conflicts arise they are “managed appropriately”. Our A.G.M. was held on 11th March on a simply dreadful evening of bitterly cold wind, snow and ice, so predictably the attendance was low and our admiration goes out to those brave souls who came but didn;t actually have to! Thank you very much indeed for your loyalty and I hope to meet you in better weather in future months. The annual review was given by our President John Rye, followed by reports from the Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary after which the election of officers and the committee took place. The existing committee were re-elected en-bloc. My thanks go to all the committee who agreed to carry on in their present positions and have worked so hard in the past year and before. Thanks also to a new member who bravely came to support us and offered some useful observations about the future - thanks Sid! After some refreshments the evening concluded rather earlier than usual as everyone was keen to get home. Now we are all ready for our new programme and hopefully a year of more garden friendly weather. Meetings to look forward to in this new season include visits to Peter Beales Nursery (Roses) and Hyde Hall (RHS), talks on fruit growing, willow weaving for gardens and carnations, to name a few. Please do come along and hear for yourselves, the next meeting is on 8th April, Johnathan Jukes will be talking about Marks Hall Gardens and Arboretum. Ruth Allen 822323
Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers Our walk this month will be on Saturday 13th April We will travel by bus to Valley Farm Lodge Sproughton, departing from Hadleigh Bus Station (car park side) at 9.30am. We will walk from Valley Farm Lodge back to Hadleigh, via Washbrook Grange, Washbrook Village, Washbrook Church, Coles Green Farm Chattisham, Chattisham Village, Hintlesham Duke Street, Hintlesham Great Wood, Hintlesham Ramsey Wood, Cobbolds Farm Hadleigh, and on to Hadleigh Town via Durrants Farm, and Tower Mill Lane. The walk is 8.5 miles in length, and we hope to be back in Hadleigh by 1.30pm. This walk is suitable all walkers including older children and dogs. We recommend participants to wear strong shoes, or walking boots as some of the paths, and tracks can be rough and wet in places. There are some wonderful views on this walk especially around Washbrook and Chattisham, these will we think make it worth the effort. Further information about this walk, or the other activities of the Footpath Volunteers may be obtained from David Warner (Hadleighs Footpath Warden) on 07749 732941 or E-mail david.warner@stmaryshad.co.uk
Country Threads Sewing Group Jets and quilts are not normally something you would expect to view under one roof but the Country Threads sewing group did just that on a recent visit to the Imperial War Museum Duxford for a Spring Quilt Festival. There, under the shadow of a sombre and somewhat menacing Typhoon Jet, hung the most colourful, imaginative Mavis Gordon (centre) with some of the quilts. In some cases it was Country Threads Sewing Group at Duxford hard to believe that they had been created and crafted by a person. The ladies enthused over the diverse range of designs, colours and techniques on display. They then took advantage of the many stands selling everything under the sun related to the art of quilting and patchwork. The hobby has certainly come a long way since the days of left-over scraps of material and a needle and thread but happily good quilters still need skill, patience and imagination. Thanks to Linda for driving the ladies in the Community Bus. At the groups next all day ‘workshop’ they will get together and make patchwork bags. JD

Unique Photography Competition (To be judged by the East Anglian Daily Times) A unique photography competition open to all Suffolk and Essex amateur photographers is to be held in Capel St Mary village in April to raise money to help to preserve the fabric of St Mary’s Church for future generations. It is a chance to photograph every aspect, outside and inside, of this beautiful historic church, the oldest building in Capel. St Mary’s is steeped in history. It has been repaired, rebuilt and extended repeatedly over the last 1,000 years, offering scope for a huge variety of photographs. It is also a chance to make a little bit of history. Why is the competition unique? First Prize is a token £25, publication of the photograph in the East Anglian Daily Times, and publication, with other commended photographs, as a colour post card to be sold in Capel and elsewhere. The photographers’ names will appear on the back of the post card. History will be made by recording for future generations how St Mary’s looks today in an album of all the competition photographs, with a description and the photographers’ names. An Exhibition of all the photographs, any size, colour or black and white, will be held in St Mary’s church throughout May and June. The Judge will be from the East Anglian Daily Times’ photography team. Entry Fee is £1 for every photograph submitted. Multiple entries are very welcome as are entries from children. Entry fees can be paid when the photographs are entered. Closing date for entries is 30 April 2013. Entry Forms can be obtained from Capel Greengrocer’s, Capel Post Office, Capel Newsagents, The White Horse public house, by post from Photography Competition, Tudor House, 1a The Street, Capel St Mary, Ipswich IP9 2EB, or by e-mailing davidf.thompson@btinternet.com. Entries should be left or sent to Tudor House with the entry fee. Photographs can be taken in church, subject to services being held, from 9am to 5pm. There are front and back doors. One of them may be locked. The competition is being held by Friends of St Mary’s, a community rather than a church organisation. Members are church goers, nonchurch goers and non-believers. Its sole purpose is to raise money to help to maintain, repair and improve the fabric of the church. None of the money is spent on running the church or day-to-day expenses.

Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club celebrates its 25th Anniversary this month. The idea of starting a carpet bowls club had been discussed by the Community Council for some time but due to expenditure on purchasing Buckles Meadow, resurfacing the Village Hall car park and building the bar extension, there were no funds available until 1987. tony Susans and Malcolm Ward went to Elmsett Village Hall to watch a demonstration and were very keen to buy the necessary equipment to start a carpet bowls club in Whatfield if enough villagers were interested. A demonstration was duly arranged at Whatfield and over 40 people expressed an interest, so a carpet and bowls etc. were purchased by the Community Council with a grant from the Rural Initiatives Fund. The first club night was on 15th February 1988 and 30 members signed up. A second carpet and bowls were then purchased by the club. The inaugural meeting of the club was held on 23rd March 1988 when Malcolm Ward was elected Chairman; Des Flynn as Vice Chairman; Tony Susans as Secretary and Gerry Wellings as Treasurer. Members of the Committee were Robin Beard, Len Betts, Kay Flynn, Philip Goodchild, Roger Mills, Ann Susans and Horace Waspe. 5 of the orginal players are still members and play an important part in the club. They are Robin Beard, Kay Flynn, Grace Smith, John Stevenson and Horace Waspe. It is a pity that our numbers have dwindled; we are a very friendly club and would be so pleased if anyone would like to come and see what carpet bowls is all about. Our club night is at Whatfield Village Hall on Tuesdays at 7.30pm. Telephone R. Holloway on 01473 823169 for more information.

Hare’s are not defeated by Dambuster Duathlon

R. R. Beechener ‘Beeches’, Churchill Avenue, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 6BT
Saturday 9th March 2013 and the Hare’s were hoping for a warm spring day, instead they arrive at Rutland Water to a temperature of 4 degrees with a damp murky atmosphere. Not the ideal conditions for their 1st Duathlon of the year. With training hard during the winter months with doing turbo sessions up to 2 hours twice a week they were hoping this would be enough to give them a strong bike leg. The race was a British Championship age group qualifier with 800 athletes registered so the Hares were up against a very strong field of competitors. There were 6 Hare’s racing (4 individually and 2 as a relay). The first leg was a 10km run around the lake and then a double loop of the dam. The run section was mainly flat but was psychologically challenging as you could see the competition for most of the course. Then came the bike a slightly long 42km route around the spectacular Rutland scenery, it was a testing undulating course known as the Rutland Ripple which was suited to strong bikers. After a testing bike the final 5km run was a straight out and back affair which lead the Hare’s back over familiar ground. They couldn't get lost on this course but they definitely got very tired. The Hare’s did themselves and the club proud for finishing the race with great results, especially when a third of the field didn't turn out on the day! COOPER & KELLING
The man behind Newton Green Golf Club's success with young players has been elected as a vice president at the annual meeting of the club. Ian Woodhead has stood down after a decade taking the club's junior players to greater and greater heights. The meeting heard the club still holds a sixfigure bank balance, despite continuing with a programme of improvements during a difficult time for golf clubs in Ian Woodhead (left) being general. During the evening, retiring mens congratulated on being made a vice president by retiring captain Dave Lavelle presented chairman Paddy Lockwood cheques of £1,500 to Georgina Daniels of Macmillan Cancer Support and £371 to St Nicholas Hospice, the latter being received by Danielle Sansum, whose late father was head green keeper at the club, and who is remembered each year in a memorial trophy event. Retiring club chairman Paddy Lockwood said various sections had combined to raise a record £4,628 for charity during 2012. Incoming mens captain Chris Williams, who is a paramedic, announced he would be supporting the Childrens' Burns Unit at Chelmsford during his year in office. The Dave Lavelle presenting club's new vice captains will be Sue cheques to Georgina Daniels Thurgate (ladies) and Andrew Johnson and Danielle Sansum (men).

Discounted Membership for any new members in 2013! Spring is definitely in the air and we are noticing this as more tennis players appear for the sessions of play. The club has registered two teams for the Ipswich & District Tennis leagues this summer, and we are looking to continue building on recent, successful seasons! In particular the Ladies’ teams, with Hadleigh 1 winning all of their recent winter league matches, losing only 3 sets along the way. They have now been promoted to division 4. Congratulations to Sandy, Debra and Linda for their superb effort. Membership fees will be due at the beginning of April, remember to pay early and get a discount. Also, if you are registered with the LTA too, you will be eligible for the Wimbledon ticket draw in May. As an added incentive, any NEW members joining the club this year will get a 25% discount on their 2013 membership fees if they join in April, May or June, (thereafter they will be charged a pro-rata fee). (Please note that anyone who is currently, or has previously been a member of the club in the past, will not qualify for this offer). If you are not sure whether you fit in with us, why not come along as a guest and meet us? Guest fees are currently £4 per session and you will always be welcome, bring a friend for mutual support if you like! The club is not just about playing tennis however, (though this is the main objective of course), we also enjoy a number of social events through the year, such as the annual Bar-B-Q, Christmas dinner, quiz nights, internal tournaments and fun days as well as the recently re-instated anniversary match against Bildeston. All of these events ensure that there is a good social side to the club which members and friends can enjoy. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. Following this year’s AGM we are pleased to advise that annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (with a £10 discount if paid before April 30th). If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or contact Paul Knowles on 07747 637147

White-out greets orange golfers Brave hearted players attired in orange at Newton Green Golf Club did not let the snow interupt proceedings at their captain's day drive-in ceremony. It was the first time in living memory the March event had been hit by snow. Outgoing captain Dave Levelle used a red ball to putt through half an inch of snow on the 18th green to signify the end of his year in Chris Williams drives off in front of a office. New captain Chris sea of orange Williams then opened his term by sending his drive down the white-out, first fairway. Shivering members of the club had responded to the new captain's request to attire themselves in orange, but not all were foolhardly enough to follow in his footsteps by actually swinging their own clubs. However, a good number of the entered 80 starters ventured onto the course, although only a few hardy players survived the unpleasant conditions for a social round of golf. These did not include the new captain, who returned to the club house after a few holes.
