Hadleigh Show proceeds go to Porch Project & other charities
The Very Reverend Martin Thrower founder of the project with some of the youngsters who have benefited from the initiative, and presenting the cheque for £1000, Phil Bryce 2012 Hadleigh Show Director.
The Hadleigh Show is the main fundraising event organised annually by the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association (HFAA). In spite of its size, it is not a commercial venture and the proceeds from the Show go to local charities as well as into funding future shows. This year Show Director, Phil Bryce, chose The Porch Project as his main charity to benefit from the Show’s success. The Porch Project was the result of a central Hadleigh church offering a solution to a problem which was affecting the whole of the local community. Teenagers, with nothing to entertain them in the market town, were quite literally gathering in the church porch of St Mary’s because there was nowhere else for them to go. In September 2009, the Very Reverend Martin Thrower, founder of the project, took a bold step and opened the doors of the church to offer the twenty or so young people, hospitality and a safe space to meet in the body of the church. Today, the project is in contact with over 350 young people between the ages of 11 and 19. Drop-in nights are Tuesday and Friday where pool, snooker, card games, three large screen games consoles and supervised cooking is offered. Continues on page 2

Hadleigh Show proceeds go to Porch Project & other charities Facilities have expanded with counselling, the provision of an education suite (for homework club, sex/drug education and help with careers and jobs). Plans are also plans to start a sports academy. In 2011/2012 the project gained three awards for its work with young people, as well as interest from the Prime Minister’s office. This has been a huge encouragement to a strong volunteer base of 30 people of all ages and a full time youth work co-ordinator, Craig Hutton. Phil Bryce explains why he chose to support the Porch Project with the donation of £1,000: “The Hadleigh Show is a key annual event for Hadleigh as a community. The teenagers who live in Hadleigh are a vital part of our society and St Mary’s took the initiative to offer them a place to meet. I feel that this project should not be the sole responsibility of one church in our community but should be supported by everyone in Hadleigh and the neighbouring villages, as it is doing a great job and 350 youngsters are the better for it.” In responding on behalf of the Porch Project, The Very Reverend Martin Thrower said “It’s amazing that Phil has selected us as his chosen charity, to have the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association acknowledging the importance of the work that the Project is doing is great recognition for all those involved. This donation will increase awareness of what we are doing throughout the membership of the Association and will help to bring in further much needed funds or at least suggestions on how we can raise them! I would welcome any of the associations members to come and see what we are doing and what a difference we are making to the young people of Hadleigh and the surrounding villages. Thank you all, it is much appreciated and will be put to very good use”. Other charities to benefit from the proceeds of the Hadleigh Show are: Dame Vera Lyn Trust, On Course Foundation (Wattisham Base), Help for Heroes, Suffolk and Stowmarket Young Farmers, Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Christmas Appeal.

We were lucky as the sun made an appearance for an afternoon of fun at the Friends of Boxford School Summer Fete. Sudbury Gymnastics provided another excellent display and the school children in Caterpillar Toes Yoga gave an insight into their group’s activities with a colourful demonstration. The ever popular and local dance group SISTARS even had the Mums up and dancing in their final routine. Some of our parents created a new Sponge Splat and Penalty Shoot Game that kept the children and parents entertained. Along with the ever-popular Donkeys and Zippy Dipper Ride plus the traditional fete games and refreshments a great afternoon was had by all raising nearly £2000. This is fantastic achievement and will enable us to support Boxford School in their ambition to have an outside classroom. This will be a valuable additional learning area for the children in their ‘outstanding’ school. We are pleased to have received support from the following companies who have provided raffle prizes, made donations or offered their services to ensure our fete is a success:- Village Stores, Boxford Stores, Boxford News, Peake Fruit, Iain Fraulo Ltd (www.thechillout.co) Alan Leader Butchers, David Burr Estate Agents, Colin Patrick Assoc Design Co, Tesco Stores. Hadleigh REME Detachment Hello my name is Sgt Dale Mason and I am the new Detachment Commander at Hadleigh REME. I took over in May this year due to the existing Detachment Commander's work commitments he was unable to continue running the detachment now that he no longer lives in Hadleigh. On my first drill night I had 2 cadets attend...not a good start! I thought however this is the first night persevere - and steadily the word has gotten around that the detachment is still open and we're now parading 14 cadets. We have had a busy June in addition to the normal parade nights training every Thursday we've been busy helping set out the tables and chairs for the Jubilee celebrations on the high street where we also managed to raise £180 for Help for Heroes. Eight cadets also too part in Exercise Big Gun in Norfolk over the weekend of the 30th June where they shot various weapon's such as the new cadet air rifle, No.8 .22 rifle, L98A2 Cadet GP rifle, archery and shotgun shooting. We are now preparing to attend our annual camp at Strensall Camp in North Yorkshire for 10 days in August. Here cadets will take part in numerous challenging activities such as battle exercises, adventure training, rock climbing, canoeing, paintball, shooting, Duke of Edinburgh expedition across the Yorkshire Dales national park to name only a few of the activities involved (not bad for £90 all in!!). We are also as a detachment visiting Duxford Imperial War Museum in July and Wattisham Airfield where the Cadets will meet their Affiliated parent unit 7 Bttn REME. They will be shown around the Apache helicopters based there and will have a chance to meet some of the pilots and crews who maintain them (you never know it might be Prince Harry?) When we get back from camp we start recruiting again at the end of august so if you have children between 12 (must be year 8) and 18 years old and you'd like them to take part in rewarding, exciting and challenging pastime (rather than sit on the x-box all day) then send them down! We parade every Thursday 1900-2130hrs at Cadet Drill Hall, George Street, Hadleigh and would be more than happy to give them a shot to see if they've got what it takes to be an Army Cadet in Hadleigh REME. Welcome to this months Police news item. For all those who are regular readers, PCSO Mandy Coleman has asked me to write this month’s article. I am PCSO Hannah Creasey and am the most recent addition to the Hadleigh Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT). I joined the team in March, having spent two years as a Special Constable and Police Dispatcher. Four months down the line I feel happily settled in and am becoming familiar with faces and places in Hadleigh and its surrounding villages. I wanted to write a small section about Farm security and safety on industrial estates. Over recent weeks we have unfortunately had some bales of hay and machinery stolen from local farms or fields overnight. Despite sending messages through Police Direct service I thought it relevant to remind all landowners to ensure any gates are firmly closed and locked during hours of darkness. Where possible we would also recommend any farm/building machinery is kept in a secure outbuilding once finished on site for the day. If you are interested in receiving specific crime prevention advice for your land please do not hesitate to contact the SNT on telephone number 101. Placing Signs, sensor lights and CCTV are all recommended actions that can be taken by you to deter unwanted visitors. If you work or have property on any of our industrial estates we are also keen to ensure you are conscious of the risk of metal theft. Unfortunately this is a crime that occurs all over the country. Industrial or listed buildings with large quantities of lead roofing are often targeted for the purpose of later selling the metal. We ask you are particularly vigilant in noting down details of any vehicles or persons whom should not be on the estate. This may help us develop our intelligence and highlight any patterns of events. Once again CCTV is highly recommended on industrial estates. Safety around abandoned buildings is also at the forefront of our minds during the summer months. We are keen to ensure that no persons enter abandoned/derelict buildings for unnecessary reasons. These buildings present a multitude of hazards, most of which you may not be aware of until its too late. If anyone is seen or heard in these building please do call and ask officers attend to ensure the person(s) are moved on. This is also relevant where rivers may be extremely high due to our lovely British summer rain…Please appreciate although calm to look at and walk by these rivers/streams often have a strong undercurrent. Contacting us: - Babergh East SNT Tel: - 01473 383115 E-mail: - babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk For Non emergency police issues Tel: - 101 In an emergency dial 999 - You should dial 999 when life is threatened or people are injured, or if there is a crime in progress or immediate police response is necessary.

Where to mate – London 2012 Of Course! Jeff Hume who works in Hadleigh in Suffolk has had to learn about a new Hadleigh in Essex. “Hadleigh Farm, the venue for the men and women’s mountain biking, is one of about 30 Olympic venues I’ll have to learn how to get to as part of my role as a volunteer driver. Others include Park Lane, Horse Guards Parade, North Greenwich Arena, and not forgetting the Olympic Park in Stratford” said Jeff when asked by his colleagues where he will be working. All of my work colleagues at Free Rein Ltd in Hadleigh, Suffolk have been a great help. Our digital marketing team have set-me up with a Twitter account (#OlympicTaxiMan) so I can keep in touch, and hopefully raise some money for my local Riding For The Disabled charity near Woodbridge. Commenting on his recent training Jeff added “It has been great fun and very helpful, especially for a Suffolk lad who’s used to seeing more horses than cars. London driving is a new experience for me. We do have the compensation of having brand new BMW cars to drive, and I’m told there will be special Olympic lanes on the roads during the games” “I’m not sure who I’ll get in the back of my BMW car for the 3 weeks I am down in London, but I’m hoping to catch a few snaps of the athletes, and will certainly tweet if Usain Bolt jumps in the back of my car and say ‘men’s 100m final – step on it I’m late”. “It won’t be all work. I have got some tickets for the Olympic and Paralympic events and am especially hoping to catch Oscar Pitouris (the Blade Runner) in the men’s 400m on Sunday 9th September.” Where to mate – London 2012 Of Course! – follow me on #OlympicTaxiMan
Bildeston Primary School The children at Bildeston have been taking part in a whole school Olympic Reading Challenge. Each child had a race track to complete with as many different genres of books to read as possible. Congratulations to all the children that got either a gold, silver or bronze award and a book prize. Thirteen Olympic tickets were raffled at Sports Day and won by some lucky families. We hope they enjoy the chance of a life time. Still on the Olympic theme, the children made a torch in school ready to parade at the summer fair. Luckily the sun shone after a heavy shower, and parents and friends enjoyed watching the Bildeston Olympic torch parade across the school field. It is time to say goodbye and good luck to our Year 6. They have been working hard on producing their end of term play, written and performed by themselves called "Our Bildeston Memories" - not a dry eye in the house from all the mums and dads! They have enjoyed their transition day at High School and are more than ready to go. All the best Year 6, we wish you well. Our Junior Road Safety Officers ran their final competition of the year to design a football strip advertising road safety. Well done to the winners and thank you to Isobel and Daniel for being great JRSO's this year. Finally our Year 5 children have taken part in Bikeability and have proved themselves to be confident and capable on the road. They received a certificate in assembly from Mr. Lindsley.

Howard at Lullingstone Castle As I pen these words, the Summer is being washed away before my very eyes. I know that a number of you will have been able to relax on holidays near and far. I am looking forward to a short motoring excursion to the Continent; I have sent on a trunk. I have managed to squeeze in all sorts of trips in July. Frank, my chauffeur, has been quite exhausted by it all and has had little time to tend his courgettes, Maria, my cook and housekeeper is worried that she will have a marrow on her hands before we know it. A marathon effort was a 400 mile round trip to Petersfield, Marlow and back to Hadleigh. I am so pleased with this month’s picture which was taken by a good friend at Lullingstone Castle in Eynsford Kent. The postcode is DA4 0JA in case you would like to visit. There is a small church in the grounds called St Botolph’s and I had a splendid day. One evening I went to a birthday dinner at the Pier Hotel in Harwich (a lovely venue but sadly the cleanliness of its conveniences did not match the front of house) and next morning I was motoring through the East End of London to the City and how grim all of that was. I pity those who will be caught-up for hours to reach the Olympic venues. If you would like to stretch your car’s legs why not visit Satis House at Yoxford. It is a hotel in its own grounds which I thought was rather pleasant. As one gets older, one’s memory is not what it was. A client who made his Will some six or seven years ago wanted to check on a few things. We know our clients so well that we can recall most things as necessary. My client was tickled that I should enquire as to the whereabouts of his wife’s leotard in which she wished to be buried! Did I mention the subject of Wills – well I gather that there are one or two of my loyal readers who have yet to make their Wills. The process is not particularly long or expensive. Do call the office so that we can assist. My impression is that the property market locally remains fairly buoyant both for home owners and those making an investment. I would be delighted to assist you with my 27 years of property experience. I hope that August will be that sunny month that we all crave and that you will be able to soak up some sun before the run-up to Christmas! Howard Gibbons

Suffolk Audiologist on Hearing Mission to Nepal Needs Your Help One selfless and determined audiologist from Suffolk, is returning to the Asian country of Nepal, to help improve the lives of the many hearing impaired people who live there. Jemima Phillpot, of The Hearing Care Centre, based in Ipswich, is travelling with the Christian charity, Nepal International Fellowships, which undertakes medical camps across the poverty-strickened country. The medical camps are staffed by clinical specialists from around the world who work on a voluntary basis to provide treatment to patients who would otherwise have little or no opportunity to benefit from such services, including audiology and ear surgery. The 2012 mission involves all attendees financing their own attendance as well as having to provide equipment to be used to help change lives. Help in a financial capacity is urgently required as well as equipment, particularly bone conductors/head bands, body worn aids, leads for body worn aids, medium to high powered BTEs and small ear moulds. However, anything would be gratefully received by the team. Jemima, whose last trip was in 2007 said, “ Even though the trip was a huge challenge physically and emotionally, I decided immediately that I needed to go again. “To give you an idea of the challenge ahead, the last camp I took part in treated 1023 patients, performed 150 operations, carried out 381 audiograms and fitted 107 hearing aid in just eight days.” Information on making donations can be found by visiting www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk

Sell out theatre in Lindsey June saw a first for Lindsey Village Hall when the Medusa Theatre Company from Derbyshire put on their most recent production 'Our Bench'. Written specifically for performance in Village Halls the play introduced us to two characters Tom and Evelyn, energetically played by Liam Atton and Fiona Waite, who meet at the age of nine during wartime Britain on a park bench. Their friendship and ultimately love survives the forthcoming decades and we were treated to snippets of their lives as they re-visit their 'Bench' over their lifetime. The audience were transported through laughter, tears and back again as the characters helped by small costume changes grew in age and complexity as life dealt them both joy and challenges. Written and directed by Robert Scott with well crafted dialogue and a fast pace we saw the characters move from sprightly boisterous children, through the uncomfortable feelings of teenage hood, middle age and the aches and pains of later life. With size appropriate scenery and a small cast this production was well designed for a Village Hall setting, the crew were touring for a four week period taking in all corners of the UK. For Lindsey it was a 'sell-out' evening with ice-creams in the interval and the offer of pre-theatre drinks in The Rose beforehand. It would be great to welcome them back with a new offering next year. Belinda White

Find it by the footpath! Spindle This is one of those strange bushes you will walk past without noticing, until the autumn; when it suddenly becomes visible. It is not the bush that will attract your attention, but the pretty seedpods, and later the seeds themselves. What is there about this bush! Its proper name derived from Greek Mythology is Euonymous-europaeus and it was not generally known as “Spindle” until the wood came into use in the wool-spinning industry in the middle-ages. In drawings of the period you often see women producing yarn by spinning a dangling length of very straight wood weighted at the lower end with a heavy object. These are the Spinsters (generally they were unmarried - which is where the common name for unmarried women came from), and the piece of wood (Euonymus was the straightest and best) is the “spindle” (presumably because they had to keep it spinning) from which the bush got its name! Later as spinning and weaving became mechanised the same wood was used for the shafts passing through the bobbins of yarn in the spinning and weaving frames (we still call parts of machines with this purpose “spindles”).The wood is very durable and in use exudes a very fine film of lubricant onto its working surface which polishes it, reducing wear. In some parts it was also known as “Pickwood” because - being very straight-grained and hard – it could be sharpened to a very fine point, making it ideal for use as toothpicks, skewers, knitting needles etc. They’re a straggly shrub preferring to grow among other bushes for support. The individual twigs “square-ish”, the bark dark green, and if you break into it the smell of the sap is very unpleasant. You won’t notice the bush during the spring because everything is green - even the tiny flowers. What will catch your eye during the summer are the bright pink seed pods. These consist of three or four individual lobes each holding a single large seed. In the autumn it gets better - as the seeds ripen the individual lobes separate revealing the bright orange seeds within. Although this plant is not related to the true “rubber” trees of the Far-East, the sap within its roots contains a form of latex which can be processed into a material known as “gutta-percha”. This is similar to a very hard rubber and was one of the earliest electrical insulators. Although I haven’t found any evidence that this plant was ever a commercially viable source of latex, it was used to produce several other products. Yellow and orange dyes were made from the seeds, pink from the seed cases and a volatile oil extractable from all parts of the plant was used in soap manufacture The whole plant is poisonous to humans to some degree (particularly the seeds) but like most other plants the early Apothecaries (druggists) found uses for it. A compound to treat skin parasites (Scabies, lice etc) was made from the dried leaves and bark, and an extract from the root-bark as a treatment for loss of appetite. Nowadays we know that consuming any of the compounds obtainable from this shrub can have a dramatic effect on both liver and kidneys, which beg the question of - how many people did they managed to poison before discovering the error of their ways? Calling All Children – Free NHS Dental Appointments Hadleigh Dental Surgery is pleased to announce that we have more availability for children to be seen FREE on the NHS. Hadleigh Dental Surgery was established in 1985 and has seen many changes over the years. Our approach is caring, friendly and professional and we are registered with the Quality Care Commission. All of our dentists have lots of experience with children and enjoy the Philip Wilson, Rachael Norris challenge they bring. Our and Gurpreet Singh, aim is to educate children so they can have a healthy mouth for life. For our younger children, we like to make their visits as much fun as possible. We have a waiting room filled with toys and books to read and in the surgery a ride in the dental chair with a lovely nurse to look after them throughout their visit and a sticker or a smiley face at the end of their appointment. Our older children can benefit from the education given to them in a way in which they can easily understand and carry out. We also like to chat to their parents. We like to see all our children on a regular basis, hopefully twice a year, so that we can build up a professional relationship with them and closely monitor any changes to their mouths. We are also able to refer children who need to have their teeth straightened to local orthodontists again on the NHS. Many of our patients choose to take this opportunity and are rewarded with beautiful straight teeth. During this treatment we still carefully monitor their teeth. Children are often very self conscious of the appearance of their teeth and we can help with this and any other problems, including bad breath and how to keep it at bay. Of course, we are also here for when accidents happen and for when treatment is needed. We aim to make any treatment as comfortable as possible. Getting the treatment promptly and correctly can prevent future problems and costs incurred when the child grows up to an adult. Our Dental Team welcomes new children at our practice and asks parents to take 5 minutes to ring up and book an appointment to get your children’s teeth checked. Patients often ask at what age should we bring our child in for their first visit? and our advice is ‘as soon as they have any teeth’. The earlier they come, the sooner they get used to having regular check-ups. Our reception team are waiting to hear from you, call us now on 01473 823092 Who knows the future of the NHS??? Take advantage now to gain the health benefits for a healthy and confident smile. The Children are our future! For all you existing patients under the care of the Hadleigh Team; keep your teeth and gums healthy with good brushing and ‘watch those sweets’! Look forward to seeing you soon.

Come EAAA-T With Me and support your local air ambulance What are you doing between 24 and 30 September? Why not support your local air ambulance and make a difference to the community you live in, especially during National Air Ambulance Week. Every penny really goes a long way in helping to save lives. National Air Ambulance Week is a week of action devised by members of the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA), the organisation which unites not only air ambulance charities from across the country, but also aircraft operators and ambulance services; giving a national voice to a local service. Tim Page, Chief Executive of the East Anglian Air Ambulance said: “We’re joining together with other local air ambulances across the country, to ask everyone to get involved during National Air Ambulance Week and help raise money for their local service.” “The East Anglian Air Ambulance is looking for supporters to host their own Come EAAA-T With Me evening. The idea is simple. We’d love people to say they’ll hold a dinner party for us and then ask their friends to donate the amount they would have paid for that meal if they’d have gone out to eat in a restaurant. “We believe fundraising should be fun and an event like this is easy to organise and takes very little pre planning, unless of course you want to. We can also help with ideas for themes, menu options and invitations for the evening. However you decide to host your evening, rest assured that all monies raised will stay in the local area, helping to keep your local air ambulance flying.” To find out more about the latest fundraising initiative from the East Anglian Ait Ambulance or to request your Come EAAA-T With Me fundraising pack contact Helen Dodman on 01473 745007 or email helen.dodman@eaaa.org.uk

The Station on The Hill by Jeff Ward - the last Stationmaster My appointment as stationmaster at Hadleigh took effect from 30th Dec. 1959, when I was aged 25. It came to a regretful end when the station closed five years later on 19th April 1965. It was one of the happiest periods of my working career. Having been born at Layham but moving away to West Norfolk at an early age. It was like coming home. There were and still are relatives of mine in the area and I’d spent many holidays there during my school days. So no problems fitting in. Hadleigh station at that time dealt with a wide range of agricultural products and fertilisers, stores and ammunitions for the military depots, carpets, plants and shrubs from local nurseries and the staple for many stations coal and coke. Additionally there were stores of animal feedstuffs and agricultural chemicals which we administered and issued stock from. As a sideline we still sold passenger tickets for local people joining trains at Ipswich or Colchester. There was only one train a day arriving about 1130 am having called at Bentley, Capel St. Mary and Raydon Wood stations. Returning to Ipswich at 4.45 pm. The stationmaster at Hadleigh was also i/c Raydon Wood, although later on when the stationmaster at Bentley retired I became responsible for the entire branch including Bentley. The staff who made me welcome and who nearly all remained to the end were;- Ron Double checker, Charlie Barber - goods delivery vehicle driver, James Clarke - shunter, and Harold Segger - goods porter. For the first year or so there was a clerk, Malcolm Raworth, but it was deemed that we could manage without him and he was transferred to Ipswich. It was a joy to work at a small country station; you turned your hand to just about everything and the atmosphere was relaxed and informal. No wonder many country station masters stayed in the same job for most of their lives. At Christmas there where the christmas boxes!! A 20lb Jeff Ward the Stationmaster turkey went a long way for a with Ron Double young couple with two small children. I seem to remember we buried the remains in the garden. No freezers in those days. For most of my time at Hadleigh, as there was no station house we lived in a rented cottage at Bottlebridge, Great Wenham, where the garden ran down to the railway,. So it wasn’t unusual for the train to make informal stops to make deliveries to the Ward establishment. The shunting arrangements at the station were unusual. It was the end of the line and there was no track layout to enable the engine to “run round” the train,so that it could shunt the wagons into the various sidings and be

at the front of the train for the return journey to Ipswich. Therefore advantage was taken of the fact that the track ran downhill into the station. The train was halted outside the station the engine was detached and moved into a short shunting spur. The train was held stationary by the guard applying the brake in the guards van. When the engine was out of the way the guard released the brake and the train rolled down the slope into the platform and was stopped by the guard applying his brake. The engine could the follow the train into the station and be at the correct end for the return journey. Its not my intention to go into the history of the station and branch line. This has been well documented elsewhere, other than to say that it opened in 1847 and as I later discovered much to my surprise the first stationmaster was a certain Henry James Ward aged 24. No relation as far as I can discover. His father was a John Ward master baker and confectioner with premises at Cornhill Ipswich. This prompted me to try to put together a list of all the stationmasters who served at Hadleigh. These are as follows. 1847 to c1856 H. J. Ward, lodged at White Lion Hotel. Resigned when his salary was reduced as a cost cutting measure. In 1861 he was a photographic artist at Torquay and after that either a publican or a billiard room proprietor at various locations. He never married. c1856 to 1860 Mr Johnson, he died in service Jan 1860. 1860 to 1871? Alfred Dale, at June 1868 his salary was £90 pa. 1871 to 1876 George Weston 1876 to 1892 ??????? 1892 to 1896 James Baker 1896 to 1918? Edwin George Heard, I am aware that Simon Dewes in his book A Suffolk Childhood spells it Hurd but this is the official version. 1918? to Nov 1921 Sydney Walter Westwood 1921 to July 1922 Thomas Cartwright 1922 to 18-10-1930 Mr. A. Fryatt 1930 to 30-9-1947 Joseph Marriot. 1947 to ? Norman Ellis ? to 1959 Ronald Calver. 1959 to 1965 Jeff Ward. There is a gap between 1876 and 1892 and some of the dates are suspect, so if anyone could supply me with the missing names or improve on the dates I’d be most grateful. After the station closed I remained with the railway moving initially to a clerical post at Liverpool Street. Taking early retirement just before privatisation. My final appointment was as Employee Relations Officer for B.R.H.Q. staff. I now live at Colchester. Jeff Ward
The last train from Hadleigh - which ran on Thursday 15th April 1965. Ironically the locomotive being used that week was well painted and polished as the previous week it had been used to haul a royal train!
Free insulation for all Suffolk homes It may be summer, but Suffolk residents are being urged to think ahead and get their homes properly insulated well in advance of next winter by taking advantage of a scheme that offers residents free cavity wall or loft insulation. Under the slogan of ‘Ensure your home is as warm as toast next winter’ Suffolk County Council and the District/Borough Councils of Suffolk, are working in partnership with accredited local companies to provide free insulation to all residents in Suffolk. Although subject to survey, access and existing levels of insulation, this insulation offer is not dependant on income levels or age, but it is time limited. All applications must be received by 30/09/12. To apply simply phone 0845 603 7686 (local rate) or go to www.greensuffolk.org/toast One in five Suffolk households is in fuel poverty yet over a quarter of homes in Suffolk do not have cavity wall or adequate loft insulation. Insulating a property is the single most effective way of reducing the impact of rising fuel prices. According to figures from the Energy Saving Trust, cavity wall insulation can typically reduce fuel bills by £135 per year, whilst loft insulation typically can reduce bills by £175. In order to encourage the public to take up this time limited offer, Suffolk schools, sports clubs, charities and community groups are being getting involved in the promotion of the campaign - and by doing so will be financially rewarded. The Greener Homes community cash-back scheme works by school, clubs and groups registering on-line at www.greensuffolk.org/cashback and then assisting the campaign by displaying posters and distributing leaflets to parents and members. In return they will receive a cash-back of £15 for every home insulated as part of this scheme, funded by the large energy companies. Just seventy installations will raise over £1,000 for a school or community group. Suffolk employers can also get involved by nominating a Suffolk school, charity, sports club or community group that has registered with the cashback scheme and publicising the free insulation offer in their workplace. Councillor Lisa Chambers, cabinet member for Environment and Property Management said; “Summer may have only just arrived, but we would like to urge Suffolk residents to think ahead and get their homes properly insulated well in advance of next winter. “It is so important to register in time, and to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. This is also a great way to save money and play your part in Suffolk’s ambition to be the Greenest County.” For more information on the scheme visit; www.greensuffolk.org/toast or phone 0845 603 7686 (Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm)
Local Accountant does Orwell Walk for colleague Clive Wilkins, from Haines Watts accountants Hadleigh, raised a fantastic £303.25 for Muscular Dystrophy doing the Orwell Walk on Sunday. The charity is very close to his heart, as his business partner Trevor McLeese has the disease, so he did the walk in his honour. "This is not the first time I have done the Orwell Walk but this time it's more personal," said Clive. "Trevor has managed to work and be a successful businessman over the last 20 years, despite the challenges he faces everyday and this is for him." Muscular Dystrophy has been chosen as this years Haines Watts East Anglia nominated charity. So far over £1000 has been raised through a variety of events, with more to come later in the year. "The money I raised for the Orwell Walk has come partly from my fellow partners at Haines Watts but the bulk is from clients who have been very generous." On Sunday 8th July, after a gruelling 12 hour journey the 20 children from the village of Cherikov in Belarus were collected from Gatwick airport and then journeyed back to Needham Market. We were very grateful to the Needham Market Community Council for the loan of their mini bus to help us bring the children home and use of the Community Centre for the Host families to be available to greet the children who will live with them for the next month. After a restful day at home with their host families on the Monday our program of activities began at Bloomfields Football club who very kindly give us the use of their premises as a base during the week, without this facility this link would never be able to give the children the amazing month of experiences they will be having and the memories to take home with them of an adventure they will never forget. All this of course being an added bonus to the big improvement in their health that a month away from the pollution and radiation affected environment of Belarus will give. On Tuesday morning we all met at the centre for the first time,10 of the children were seen by Needham Market opticians and two children will be provided with new glasses, the remaining 10 children will be seen later in the visit and any child needing glasses will receive them. These services have been provided free of charge by Gail Brown for which we are very grateful. After lunch a welcome party was held for the children with the emphasis

being on the children being able to select from a massive amount of clothing that has been collected for them over the last 6 months or so, most of which has been donated by local residents. The children arrived with only the clothes they were wearing but thanks to this generosity they are going home with up to 30kg each of good quality clothes. Next came the first experience of watching a Punch and Judy show very kindly provided by Peter Batty and Miraiker from Claydon who also let the children play with the puppets after the show. To finish the afternoon the children sat down to a brilliant Tea Party, provided by Sue and Wendy who are members of the Football Club and after Tea Sue and Wendy presented each child with a “goodie bag” full of different items for them including hand made head bands for all the girls which are already a much coveted item. The Tea had a “Jubilee” theme and the children were all delighted with their red white and blue Hats and matching table ware, they also loved the noisy roll out blowers although after a while I think we all began to wonder if they had been such a wise decision! When we asked the children what had been the best part of the day all they could say was “everything!”….what more could you ask for? In addition to the fun outings the children will also be seen by Dentist, Jill Gearney of the Wedgewood Dental practise in Stowmarket who with some of her friends will be seeing all twenty children in one day! . This is an extremely important part of their visit as most of the children will never have been to the dentist before and those that have will have only gone as an absolute necessity if the pain had become too much to bear because having dental treatment at home is far from a pleasant experience, often with no anaesthetic even for extractions. The children have an exciting and varied program to look forward to including: A visit to Walberswick to go Crabbing with Needham Market Community Council, a day spent with the Needham Market Lake Wardens, afternoon Tea at E & V’s Tearooms, a visit to Baylam Rare Breeds and Bowling with Stowmarket Lions and an Activity day at Kids Klub Gt Finborough. The children will also be joined by some of the residents of Drift Court to have lunch and then watch them during their Mini Sports Day to be held at the Football Club. They are also having two football sessions with the Coach and boys from the Bloomfield Football academy, something both the boys and the girls are really looking forward to . It really is wonderful to see how much local community spirit there is with everyone contributing so much to help these children. We would also like to thank Sue and Richard at the Swan Public House who have supported us since our Link began by allowing us to hold our meetings there and who also make the packed lunches for us on the days they are needed. We will bring you further news as the visit progresses but meanwhile, to everyone who has donated something for the children, who has purchased goods from our Charity Shop, who sponsors an outing or provides a service………our very grateful thanks, the success of each visit depends on the support we receive from you. If anyone is interested in Hosting or finding our more about our program please visit our website at www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk or give me a call for further information. We are also happy to add you to our mailing list which will keep you updated with the progress of the visit and future events – we promise your email address will not be passed on and we promise we will not send you ”Spam”! Jerry’s Diary A new species for my local patch was seen at Giffords Park on 5th July. This was an adult Mediterranean Gull which was resting amongst 100+ Black Headed Gulls, which by the way do not have a black head but a chocolate brown head. Mediterranean Gulls have a black head on summer adult birds. The beak is thicker and more blood red than on a Black Headed Gull. Nice photo of a Robin sent in to Other birds seen were, 14 Black me by Peter Cutts Tailed Godwits, 4 Greenshank, 12+ Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, several Peewits, 2 calling Redshanks, 1 Common Tern (which also has a black head and blood red beak), a pair of Teal, 24+ Shelducks, 4 Heron, 5 Little Egret and a hunting Hobby. At the end of June and the first two weeks of July I saw more young Tawny Owls. Birds were seen or heard at Ash Street, Semer Hill, Hadleigh river walk and railway walk. I have also seen more Barn Owls this year. Barn Owls were seen with prey food at Ash Street, Hill Farm Layham, Semer, Ramsey Wood Hintlesham and near Kersey sewer bed. Reed Buntings are around in good numbers, 6+ were singing from rape crops in the Ash Street and Stone Street areas and 2 more in Tower Mill Lane, Hadleigh. Again Red Kites were seen from Hadleigh and Polstead Heath. Jane Upson was lucky to see a pair flying high over the garden in Aldham Road. Heavy rain on 13-15 July saw the River Brett very high, this would have been bad for any Reed Warblers nesting amongst the reeds as there will be young in the nests at this time of year. At least the countryside is looking nice and lush. As always if you see anything interesting, please let me know, I can be contacted by email Anyone lost a Californian Quail? jerry@keithavis.co.uk - Spotted by Doug Finbow

How Beautiful How beautiful, the sunlight, after the rain. Sparkling on the droplet upon my windowpane. Blooms turning up their heads, embracing the warming rays. Birdsong fills the air, on this enchanting day. A cat stretches out, paws in the air. Laying upon the grass, without a care. Buzzing of a busy bee, as from flower to flower he goes. Then off and away into the sky to a hive wherever, who knows. How beautiful life is, on this brand new day. With a smile and a light heart, I will go on my way. By Ms Sue Williamston

A group of local businessmen have just returned from an epic bike ride to raise funds for a local life saving charity. The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is set to benefit by more than £12,000 following the ride which began on Wednesday 13 June. The mammoth sponsored cycle challenge left Crystal Palace at 8am and arrived at the Eifel Tower in Paris at 2pm on Saturday 16 June. The group of five from the Forum for the Built Environment, a networking organisation for the property, development and construction industries, travelled a total of 300 miles on the trip but covered many more miles in preparation as Julian Harvey, Chairman of the East Anglian Branch, explains: “We all trained for about five months leading up to the challenge and think between us we’ve covered over 10,000 miles. “All of us would like to say a big thank you to all those who have supported us and donated so generously to the air ambulance. It’s a fantastic charity which do such great work in our local area. Given the industry we work in and distances we travel on a daily basis we felt this was an important charity for the branch to support and we’re so pleased we’ve been able to raise such a fantastic some of money for them.” Pip Duffy, Area Fundraising Manager for EAAA, said: “This is an incredible amount of money to raise and will be gratefully received by the charity. We operate two dedicated air ambulance helicopters covering East Anglia and it’s only through the fundraising efforts of local people like Julian, James, Colin, Peter and Darren, that we can continue to get our highly skilled doctor and critical care paramedic teams to the scene of accidents and medical emergencies. What they have achieved is wonderful and we can’t thank them enough for their support.” If you’d like to donate to the East Anglian Air Ambulance in support of Julian, James, Colin, Peter and Darren then please visit their fundraising page at www.virginmoneygiving.com and search for ‘Julian Harvey’. The logo for the Forum for the Built Environment will appear as the profile picture.
Hadleigh’s New Butcher! NFU Mutual's Ipswich office has a new senior partner and he's recently made Hadleigh his new home. Robert Butcher, who began his insurance career with the company in 1988 at the Norwich office has returned to East Anglia after six years in France and is already enjoying life in his new surroundings. "I haven't been here long, but Hadleigh is a lovely place. There's a nice atmosphere in the town, the people are very friendly, the countryside is perfect for walks and cycling and I'm right in the heart of the area where all our clients are based." Workwise, Robert takes over the helm from local lad John Whyman who was in the role for 30 years so is he phased by the prospect of following someone who was so popular and successful? "The NFU Mutual has always been well run and offers an exceptional service, in fact the biggest pleasure in my first week has been seeing what an amazing team we have here in the Ipswich office. We've got a solid client base with some big opportunities and there seems to be a hunger to see this office not just remain the largest in the UK but also to ensure it continues to grow and always improves the service if offers." Talking of hunger, six years spent in Lyon, famed for its gastronomic delights have honed Rob's passion for good food and fine wine, so it is perhaps appropriate that his skills have found a home in a part of the country that has a growing reputation for culinary excellence. "As well as having a wonderful team, here on our patch we've got some terrific clients producing some of the best food in the country. My office window overlooks fields of barley, we have local asparagus, superb free range pork and rare breed meats, duck and poultry, artisan cheese producers....and Hadleigh has some award winning shops which means I can get it all on my doorstep." So has Rob been out to get a taste for his new surroundings in his first week? "I've been out and about already and have enjoyed hearing how passionate our clients are about their produce. Hopefully over the coming weeks and months my colleagues will be taking me to meet as many of our customers and prospects as possible. I'm certainly not one for sitting behing a desk five days a week." Rob is keen however to apply some of his experience gained in his roles outside of NFU Mutual to further develop into the wider market. "Our farmers are the lifeblood of our business and and we need to be able to duplicate the excellent service we give them in our efforts to win new business in different industries. Many other insurance providers just don't give the same level of service." A keen mountaineer, who often spent time climbing in the French and Swiss Alps during his stay in France, Rob is clearly someone who enjoys a challenge. One of his biggest however might be finding how an avid Norwich City supporter will fare in territory occupied by supporters of the clubs’ rivals, Ipswich Town. Most of Rob's clients and prospects will, after all, be "Tractor Boys". NFU Mutual, Harvest House, Alton Business Centre, Wherstead, Ipswich, Suffolk IP9 2AX T 01473 688466 F 01473 688399

Cockfield given Babergh’s thumbs up! Cockfield residents can be very proud of the village they live in – after it scooped Babergh’s Village of the Year’s top spot. Entrants to Babergh District Council’s competition were told the results recently with Stoke by Nayland in second place, Stutton in third and Polstead in fourth place. The winner of this round receives the Cosford Trophy, framed certificate and £500 towards a community project. District finalists are then entered into the semi-final round, with winners then reaching the final stage with the overall winner receiving £1,000, a plaque, a certificate and becoming Suffolk Village of the Year. Jo Beever, Babergh's Community Grants Officer said: “Babergh is delighted to announce Cockfeld’s success in this round of the competition”. “It was a really close contest and left the judges with a very hard decision but this village is a prime example of a community-minded village, that is well looked after and takes pride in itself. “Cockfield thoroughly deserves the district accolade and now its fingers crossed for the county round!” "It was a very close run thing, with only two points between the top two spots and 14 marks between the first placed and last placed village. "All the villages made a splendid job of showing the judges around and every community had something that stood out. "Stoke by Nayland and Stutton were first time entries and so did especially well to receive high marks." Babergh’s judging panel was made up of four district councillors who marked villages on their community spirit, general appearance, how well its parish council is run and the special activities happening in the village.

Beer and Music Festival another success Despite the dull outlook for the weather the mood of everyone at the 4th Annual Beer and Music Festival at Hadleigh Rugby Club was bright. Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy the beer and the music provided by four local bands over the week end of July 6th and 7th. The festival itself is growing each year and is Families and Spectators relaxing with a drink and enjoying the music now considered to be an annual fixture for the Rugby Club. With a selection of 17 beers and 9 ciders to choose from everyone’s taste was met. An excellent barbecue provided sustenance for revellers and music provided by Roddy and the Rejects and The Ghost Train Porters entertained the large crowds assembled at Layham Road. Many of the local businesses in the town supported the festival with sponsorship for all the beers and ciders. Special thanks must go to Hirebase who once again provided the toilet facilities and lighting and to the Kings Head Cooking up a treat at the festival in Hadleigh the main sponsor.

My life at The Shelley Centre
An ideal way of learning methods to cope with all levels of hearing difficulty
Life at The Shelley Centre has been anything but slow these past few weeks, in particular, when it came to the preparations for our Shelley Show on Sunday 24th June. Lyn and Margaret, together with the Instructors, were busy planning and preparing the running order of the days events whilst the Riders had been busy practicing their respective rides, memorising all of the moves for both the Dressage and Countryside Challenge: the maintenance team also had their work cut out mowing and trimming grass, trimming hedges, weeding and Rob, working against the clock, finishing off the building of a raised dais for use by the Judges on the day. During the week prior to the show additional help came by way of Marks & Spencer’s, Ipswich: Gemma, Julia and Siobhan had volunteered to come to Shelley for a day as part of the M&S Charity Aid Scheme and they were soon put to work weeding and tidying the barn yard and the garden in front of my room; a good job they did too, complete with an improvised stone border: in the afternoon they were volunteered for a ragwort sortie, which they approached with vigour and whilst in the fields they also acquainted themselves with Squidgy, Camilla and Fleur. Ear wigging, as I do, I heard them talking with one of our maintenance team outside my room: I think they enjoyed their day in the countryside, as we too enjoyed having them with us: thanks very much for your help! Well, back to the Shelley Show. Just hours before, the forecast was for rain and strong wind so the Countryside Challenge had to be relocated to the arena and of course during the Saturday night, guess what……more rain! On the Sunday morning, our maintenance team were kept busy by providing improvised seating in the barn and a dry path from the car park to the stable yard, the latter with bedding shavings. However, in spite of the weather, the Riders all rose to the occasion and made themselves, their parents, friends and all the Shelley Helpers (Not forgetting us, the Herd!) very proud of their performances. The dazzling display of trophies – donated this year by eight generous supporters of The Centre – were presented at the end of the day and all of the Riders went home with a big rosette and a smile on their faces. ‘The Biggest Smile’ trophy was presented to Oliver by the Mayor of Hadleigh, Councillor Mary Munson. (A full list of award winners will be published on our Website). A very welcome cup of tea and diet busting cakes were greatly appreciated and thus concluded a very successful day – followed by a good night’s sleep! Before I shutdown, a reminder for those who enjoy Clay Pigeon Shooting……do come to Feering, near Kelvedon, on 19th August and take part in the Charity Shoot in aid of The Shelley Centre: £100 top gun, £12 entry. For further details please telephone Steve Carter, 01206.574709……now I really, really must shutdown! Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Tel: 01473.824172

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Headteacher’s intro Although the promise of good weather in July is no longer guaranteed this month still holds many opportunities for our pupils. Our Enrichment Week where we focus on further developing pupils’ independent learning skills, encouraging them to take responsibility for their learning and developing the skills and attributes to be an active contributor to a team. The outcomes of the week show how flexible and able our students really are when they have the opportunities to develop their self-confidence. When confronted with unusual challenges they rise to the occasion and show us their true potential. Many pupils truly excelled in the wide variety of activities on offer and performed at new heights, sometimes literally! We were really proud of our pupils’ achievements. For the first time, Year 7 went to Danbury Adventure Centre in Essex. If three days of canoeing, mountain biking, high ropes, orienteering, climbing, BMXing and problem solving didn’t tax them, two nights under canvas certainly did! All the students surpassed themselves at something unique to them, whether it was a best time down the BMX course or that first foot on the tightrope twenty feet up, and it was fascinating to see them grow so much in ways the classroom doesn’t always manage. Year 8’s week was focused around the Combined Arts Spectacular; a mixed media performance using Art, Drama, Dance, Music and, for the first time this year, puppetry. All the hard work culminated in a performance which dazzled and amazed in equal measure. Year 9 were split for 2 activities with some hardy souls venturing to Southern France for the annual adventure in the Ardèche. Again nerve and body were tested repeatedly in a variety of outdoor pursuits although surviving the thirty hours cooped up on the bus sounds challenging enough to me! The other year 9 groups combined with some of our Year 7 pupils to produce Olympic bids. The aim of combining year groups was to provide a prolonged period of time for pupils to develop their leadership and teamwork skills. Their week came to a crescendo in a wonderful series of presentations which I had the honour of judging. The difference between the groups was only six out of a possible 100 points, so choosing a winner was very difficult but in the end the Chinese bid was successful. Needless to say, our students surpassed themselves and pushed their creativity and nerve into new areas. Year 10 had their own challenge with Work Experience. When students go out into the community it is always a little nerve racking but again our students rose to the occasion with the right, positive attitude. We value the chance for students still get the chance to sample life outside school with all that encompasses. All these opportunities are made possible by the hard work, enthusiasm and commitment of our staff – a real strength of our school as well as the unusually positive relationships which exist between our staff and pupils. We look forward to pupils returning at the start of September for another exciting and challenging year. Hadleigh Olympics On Thursday 12th July, Hadleigh High held its own Olympics to celebrate the Games in its own way. We were very fortunate to receive pleasant weather which enhanced the atmosphere therefore maximising pupils’ spirits and benefiting our performance. An Opening Ceremony kick started the day in which students demonstrated their talents including musical acts from our Year Tens followed by a successful routine exhibited by the Diamond Lights Majorettes. Oscar Vardon Barber in Year 9 inspired many participating pupils with his outstanding achievement in the 100m sprint where he obtained a great time of 11.53 seconds, beating the previous school record. Oscar was extremely astonished and pleased by this result and hopes to exceed this in the year to come. Alex Baxter also showed his sporting commitment, as he won the Year 7 1500m in an amazing 5:01 minutes! Alex said he enjoyed himself, and that he thought that our school’s Sports Day was well organised and a huge success. On a lighter note, both the Year 9 boys and girls’ three-legged races were close and competitive. Seth Philbedge and Sam Beven won by less than a second, and Ruby Shepperson and Zoe Whadcoat won by a long way, only tripping once they’d crossed the line. Although many participants did not achieve first place, they kept a high spirit throughout and “aimed to do better next year.” Sports Day provides an enriching experience for all viewers and contributors, involving a healthy competitive environment where everyone is respected and encouraged to do their personal best. We thank all those that were involved in the event; we hope to see the same outstanding results in the following year. 24

Sports Awards Sports Awards’ evening this year was held on Tuesday 10th July and was a sporting success. Many pupils received various awards such as star performer and team awards. Ralph Henderson was the spokesperson for the evening and inspired lots of the pupils to continue with sport. This was the second sports awards evening held by Hadleigh High School and was better than the first. Various pupils thoroughly enjoyed the evening. This is how Lucille O’Dwyer (a Year 9 pupil) found the Sports Awards evening. “I thought Sports Awards evening was an exciting and cheerful event that really showcased the talent we have at this school.” Another Year 9 pupil, Robert Halls also commented on the Sports Awards evening. “I thought that it was an excellent opportunity to showcase the talent of the pupils at Hadleigh High School and I really thought that Ralph Henderson was an inspiration to all, not just in a sporting field but in all aspects of life as well.” Thank you to all the people that have participated in sport this year. HHS Prom 2012 On Friday 13th July the 2012 year 11 prom took place at ‘All manor of events’ in Henley. It was an evening to remember. Here’s what some of the guests thought of it. Miss Rowland: “The disco was definitely the best part and it was great to see all the pupils dressed up so smartly.” Misha Dewes, Year 11, said that she thought “The venue was very pretty and the dance floor was great with all the special effects.” Younger pupils in the school are also anticipating their prom after hearing about this year’s successful prom. Alanah Barton a Year 9 pupil said she was really looking forward to prom because she thinks it’s a great way to end the year and it looks like everyone has a great evening. Mr Browne’s favourite part was seeing everyone arrive in the unique styles of transport, he also commented on the delicious food. It sounds like everyone had a great time at this year’s prom and we look forward to seeing the future HHS proms. A Kind Donation Hadleigh High School’s music department received a generous donation from Mr Espley, a very dedicated Swing band member. He has been part of Swing band since the beginning, and always makes sure he attends rehearsals and concerts. He always supports and encourages our school, and helps the music department as much as he can. The £500 he very kindly gave us will be well spent on a brand new drum kit - thank you Mr Espley! Good Luck, Goodbye & Welcome We would like to bid a farewell to many of our staff here at Hadleigh High School and we wish them all the best of luck for the future. Miss Blakeman (Health and Social Care), Mr Moore (Maths), Mrs Taylor (Subject Team Leader for Art) and Mrs Watkins (Maths) will be retiring. Mr Tunaley (Subject Leader of PE) will also be leaving us following his well deserved promotion to Assistant Head teacher at Farlingaye High School. Miss Ellis (Business Studies) and Miss Harrison (English) are relocating elsewhere and Miss Stearns (Modern Foreign Languages) is leaving to undertake intensive travelling abroad. We would like to thank all of the staff that are leaving us for all of their hard work over the years and we wish them all the best of luck! Kennel cough in dogs, is a bit like human coughs, very contagious but barring complications not very serious. From the veterinary standpoint the most important thing is to rule out other more serious causes such as heart disease, allergic bronchitis or bronchopneumonia. Usually there is a history of contact with other dogs or a stay in kennels. Also the cough ends with a short period of gagging. Normally the dog is otherwise very well. The summer, with many dogs going into kennels is a time of heightened risk of an outbreak. The main causes of the infection are a virus Parainfluenza and a bacteria Bordetella. These have been incorporated into a vaccine which is given into the nose and gives immunity after 3 days and lasts for a year. It is worthwhile giving this vaccine before using dog kennels, many of which insist on vaccination anyway before entry. The other vaccinations given to dogs are the initial puppy ones given as two doses from 8 weeks of age, for Distemper, Parvovirus. Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis. These are all repeated after a year, but after that only Leptospirosis is given annually. The other viral diseases are now only given every three years. Forty years ago it was not uncommon to see Distemper and Leptospirosis cases. Parvovirus was a great problem thirty years ago and is still so in some areas. Vaccination of dogs over the last forty years has greatly reduced the incidence of these diseases, but unless we keep vaccinating a significant proportion of the dog population they will gradually return. Cancer Awareness Are you a Group of people who meet regularly? Have you got a date where you haven't got a speaker? Would you like a talk on cancer awareness? Anglia Cancer Network Be Clear on Cancer are running a campaign to spread the message that early signs and symptoms of cancer is a vital part of getting access to treatment early. A group of 'ordinary' people leading ordinary lives who have either had the diagnosis or who have had someone close to them who has been affected, have been appointed to carry this message forward into the local community. More and more people are surviving cancer and more and more will survive if only they realise they MAY have symptoms that need investigating. Don't we all sometimes tend to bury out head in the sand. Hand on heart don't we all think 'It won't happen to me' but unfortunately, sometimes it does ! This is all about AWARENESS and this is about SURVIVAL. Recognise the possible symptoms, get an early diagnosis, if it means treatment, the earlier the better! Persistent cough that won't go away? Difficulty swallowing? Unexplained pain? Constant bloating? Fatigue? Lump? Mole that has changed colour or shape? - get it checked. Take advantage of the screenings (aren't we lucky to have these). Don't ignore that nagging little worry at the back of your mind that something isn't quite right but if you wait long enough it may disappear (because it may not and valuable time will be lost!). Cancer can be a frightening word - but it doesn't always have to be. Survival rates on early diagnosis are increasing at a rapid rate. There are people out there who are living proof of that! If you would like me to come and talk to you - please contact me - Marion on 01473 829972 or email: mariondonovan@talk21.com. It will not be a medical talk - but it may just help to make a difference to someone out there. REMEMBER THE MESSAGE AWARENESS AND EARLY DIAGNOSIS!

St. Peters, Sudbury, Saturday 23rd June Schumann: Overture, Scherzo and Finale; Saint Saens: Danse Macabre Brahms: Hungarian Dances Nos 1, 3 & 10; Bizet: L’Arlesienne Suites 1 and 2 The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra provided us with a stark contrast in the first half of their concert when they followed a little-known piece by Schumann with a composition that we all know and love. They did credit to both of them. It’s not the easiest task to open a concert with a very quiet arrangement, especially on a cold stage where tuning is difficult, but they played well and melodically – soon getting into their stride and giving us a pleasant rendering of the Schumann. Among the many good performances I found the horns outstanding. In the Danse Macabre full credit is due to the conductor who, taking it at a slower than usual pace, held the orchestra together wonderfully and was rewarded not only by a superb performance from the solo violin but excellent solos in all departments. Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, with their frequent changes of tempo, need everyone to keep a careful eye on the conductor or things can go amiss. We needn’t have worried. The foot –tapping in the audience was evidence that they too were in dance mode. The ovation for the oboes and horns was well deserved. The concert was rounded off with Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Suites. These contain so many familiar tunes that, as if they were a box of chocolates, one finds it hard to pick a favourite. They were all played well by an orchestra in good form who deserved a bigger audience. K. James
Food for Free at Orchard Barn We would like to invite you to 2 events planned this summer. Firstly, our Plum Festival takes place at Orchard Barn on Saturday 18th August from 11 –4. It is a joint enterprise between OBee Community Interest Company and Suffolk Traditional Orchard Group. Dr Paul Read of STOG will be happy to identify any plums you bring along, as well as early apples and pears. (Keep them in the fridge if they are very early). Food historian Monica Askay will be demonstrating traditional recipes to help you make the most of your harvest. There will also be a display of plum varieties, as well as the plum and greengage trees growing at Orchard Barn. In fact, there is a giant Cherry Plum here, thought to be unique, cuttings of which have been grafted onto standard rootstock for the Suffolk Collection by STOG. Maybe you have a unique variety growing in the bottom of your garden? Secondly, you are invited to join us for a Food for Free walk on Friday 21st September, (also 19th October) The guided walk will start from Orchard Barn at 10am and will encourage you how to look out for edible plants/fruits/berries, aiming to finish by 12.30. If you have not visited the Barn previously, do take this opportunity to see what has been achieved in restoring this beautiful old building – we have recently hung the huge barn doors. These doors were constructed as part of a Traditional Carpentry course. If you’d like to learn traditional carpentry including timber framing, we’ve still got places on our Summer School in late August (see website for details). However, most of the work at Orchard Barn has been undertaken by volunteers who have given their time in exchange for learning new (and yet very old) skills. We are always pleased to welcome new volunteers. During August volunteer projects include laying flint cobblestones, applying clay render, and making wattle and daub. During the autumn there will be opportunities to get involved with renovating old orchard trees, making compost, deadwood screens and hedge laying. You can find us at Orchard Barn, Far Ringshall (just south of Mill Road in Battisford) IP14 2LY More information about the Plum Festival and the Orchard Barn project is available at www.orchardbarn.org.uk and www.facebook.com/OrchardBarnorg or call Sarah Partridge on 01473-658193. There is no need to book for the Plum Festival. Advance booking for the Food for Free walks is encouraged. If you live locally, please cycle or walk as parking is limited.

Could you be a Foster Carer? Fostering is a way of offering children and young people a home while their own family, for a whole variety of reasons, is unable to look after them. New foster families are needed as more and more children are coming into care. Eastern Family Services (East Bergholt based independent fostering agency) are looking for people from all backgrounds to become foster carers. We list below some of the most frequently asked questions about fostering and ask whether you would be interested in becoming a foster carer - the rewards for bringing a positive change to a troubled young life are truly unique. Do I have what it takes to become a foster parent? If you are a caring person, with common sense, who does not readily give up once making a commitment, then you are on the right track‌‌and a good sense of humour helps too! Life has not always gone smoothly for me – is this a problem? No. You don’t have to have had a perfect life (who has!). We are looking for people with a broad range of experience from all walks of life – but what is important is that you are able to positively use your life experience to help support a child or young person. Do I need to own my own house? No. We know it is difficult to get onto the property ladder. It’s fine to be in rented accommodation, as long as the tenancy is secure. Do I need a spare bedroom? Yes, every child fostered must have his or her own room. Do I need to be a parent already? No, but some experience of children is essential. Although being a parent already gives a great insight into the needs of children, there are many excellent foster carers who have not been parents before. Am I too young / too old? You do have to be at least 21 years old, but you don’t have to worry about an upper age limit – being in good health and having the ability to relate well to children is what counts. Can I still be employed? Yes. You don’t have to give up your job, as long as you can make sure you are available for children’s meetings and foster carer training events. Would I be paid for fostering a child? Yes, Eastern Family Services will pay you an allowance for each individual child you are fostering. If you are interested in finding out more about fostering, please give us a call on 01206 299775 or contact us through our website www.easternfamilyservices.com. We are always more than happy to answer any questions you might have and help you think about whether fostering is right for you and your family - there is never any obligation to go ahead if you are unsure and we will never pressure you to make a decision that isn’t right for you. Do be assured though, if you do become a foster carer, you will find it is an incredible journey - hard work but very worthwhile!

The Clubs’ Summer Members Evening, was, in a year not renowned for good weather, remarkably lucky as it was fine enough for folk to enjoy their visit to Ann Munsons award winning garden in Lower Layham. The garden is on a fairly steep slope, Ann has worked her magic on it and made it a plantsmans paradise, this was enjoyed prior to returning to Hadleigh for supper at my place, where it was still clement enough for hardy types to spendsome time outside before eating. It really was lovely to see members enjoying a good chat and supper despite one of my dogs disgracing itself by knocking over a drink and doing a quick dash through the pond and showering everyone with water! Humble apologies, I promise to keep him shut up in future (I must say in his defence, that he had a deprived youth and tries to make up for lost puppyhood with unlimited exuberance in what he regards as paradise!!). I would like to thank Hadleigh Flower Club for taking some of us on their outing to Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and choosing marvellous weather to do it - the next day was torrential rain! There is an outing to Lucy Redmans Garden at Rushbrooke on Monday 20th August, otherwise see you on Monday 10th September in the Town Hall dining room - enjoy the “Summer?!! The Fidelis Committee ( L to R) Barbara Tryon, Carole Burne, Jan Devey, Lin Slaughter, Liz Wilson (Chairwoman) Eve De Negri ASK LUNCH BUNCH As this was Lunch Bunchers first visit to this restaurant in Sudbury there was a record turnout of members curious to try their cuisine. The ladies were given a separate ‘party’ area in the restaurant and could choose from a variety of different menus offering traditional Italian dishes. Miraculously everyone received what they had ordered and conversation gave way to serious eating. The flavour and content of the dishes passed the test but speed of service and complicated billing arrangements left a great deal to be desired. A ROYAL AFFAIR Combining business and pleasure enabled the group to follow its 7th AGM with a Diamond Jubilee Supper. Dress code, room and table decorations were topical and distinctly patriotic with tiaras, diamonds, union flags and their colours creating a convivial Jubilee party atmosphere. Once the AGM was over members enjoyed a delicious summer buffet provided by Chaplin Catering. Courses were punctuated by some light-hearted readings by Hilary Ferry and Jan Devey. This most enjoyable evening ended with prizes for Mary Marter (lucky ticket draw), Norma Stannard (best dressed) and good wishes from Chairwoman, Liz Wilson as Fidelis enters its 8th year.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts With the weather that we are having this year one begins to wonder what is the point of having a garden. To me the big attraction normally is being able to get out and relax and enjoy the plants and vegetables that you have grown, but it is now over a month since my wife and I enjoyed breakfast, or lunch in the garden. It is at times like this that I am glad that I have a greenhouse, where I have a bit more control over the environment. Some people would regard some of the plants that I grow in the greenhouse as totally crazy. There is a family of plants called Gesneriaceae which is distinguished by almost all its members having beautiful flowers, and tiny seeds. Sadly there are only couple of members of this family that have any chance of surviving outdoors in East Anglia, and I have tried and failed to keep them. However one can grow quite a lot of them in the house, or in a greenhouse. Two members of the family, the African Violet, and the Streptocarpus are widely available as house plants either in garden centres, or online from growers like Dibley Nurseries (www.dibleys.com) who also sell a selection of the other plants in this family. The other way of getting these plants is to grow them from the dust like seed, that one can buy from places like Chiltern Seeds. (www.chilternseeds.co.uk). The difficulty is in handling these tiny seeds. The technique that I use is to scatter the dust on a piece of filter paper wetted with boiled water in a container with a clear lid placed on a window sill, but out of direct sun light. You then wait patiently for the seeds to germinate, remembering to keep the paper damp. This year I sowed chirta hamosa, and sinningia sellovii on March 13th. They showed signs of germination at the beginning of July, and were pricked out using a cocktail stick on July 14th. I now wait to see how they grow on. I can not find any pictures of chirta hamosa on the internet, so that is going to be very interesting. The picture this month is sinningia leucotricha or the Brazillian Edelweiss. This was grown from seed many years ago and now has a tuber 8" in diameter. Reverting to the weather, a friend recently challenged the fact that I use 50 mm or 2" as the average monthly rainfall for Hadleigh. He suggested I ought to use a different figure for each month, so I went back to the data that I have to see if taking an overall average was reasonable. Taking figures from 1938 to 1986 the driest month was April with 39 mm, and the wettest month was November with 63 mm. Using 1998 to 2011 the driest month was April with 39 mm and the wettest month was October with 66 mm. With this small range I think that using 50 mm for discussing gardening is good enough. Open Gardens August 2-5 Tudor Roost, 18 Frere Way Fingringhoe CO5 7BP August 4-5 447 Main Road Dovercourt CO12 4HB August 7 Woodwards, Blacksmiths Lane, Coddenham IP6 9TX August 19 Woodwards, Blacksmiths Lane, Coddenham IP6 9TX Weather Records In June at Kersey there were 82.1 mm (3.2") of rain. This is 1.6 times our average monthly rainfall. This rainfall brought the 3 month figure up to 242.6 mm. (9.6") which is 1.6 times the average rainfall. In May the maximum temperature was 27 Cel (81F). The minimum was 6 Cel (43F), both of which are typical for the month. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 16 Cel (61F). Hints With all of the rain, and lack of sunshine a lot of plants have grown like mad, but are late flowering. The general rule for pruning shrubs that need pruning is to prune them after they have finished flowering. This year I am going to be doing a lot of the pruning that I would have expected to do in July in August, partly because of late flowering, and partly because I do not find pruning in the rain enjoyable. August is a good time to take cutting if you need to increase your stock. This applies to lavender, penstemon, dianthus, and many others. Think what plants you need and then check a book or the internet. It is also the right time to sow Spring cabbage like "April" or "Early Queen", and Winter Radish. Enjoy your gardening, John Rye

Olympic Rings
Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson
It’s the Summer holidays, or at least it would be if the great golden orb in the sky would put in the occasional appearance! So alongside BASIL (Buy And Source It Locally) comes the KISS rule – Keep It Simple Sarah. With that in mind, here is something for the children and for the young at heart.
Ingredients Quantity of mini ring doughnuts (available in the Co-op) in multiples of 5. 50g unsalted butter 2 cups icing sugar 2 tablespoons milk Red, blue, green, yellow and black food colouring. (I got black food colouring in Sudbury, but use cocoa powder if not) Method To make the icing, cream the butter with an electric whisk. Add the icing sugar and milk. Beat the mixture till light and creamy. Divide into five portions. Add one colour to each of the portions. Using a teaspoon, coat five mini doughnuts with each colouring to create the Olympic rings. Arrange them as follows – blue, black and red at the top, with yellow and green underneath. Incidentally, there is no reason why you can’t use full-size doughnuts, it is simply that the mini ones go further! Whether you are a sports fanatic or, like me, just happy to watch from the sidelines, enjoy the moment.

Ekiden Relay - Sunday 15th July The sun finally came out on Sunday at St Joseph’s College as 30 Hares had fun at the Ekiden Relay. The annual event, based in Ipswich, attracted 114 teams from running clubs and businesses spread throughout East Anglia. Each six man team had to run a total of 42.2km, the equivalent of a marathon, split into 10km, 7.2km and 5km legs. After weeks of taunts between runners and triathletes, the day finally arrived to see who truly was the best. Three running teams and two triathlete teams took to the field at 10am, beginning with single 7.2km leg. Hadleigh Hares A team, who eventually finished overall in an excellent 5th position, had a great start when David Willer came 10th in his 7.2km leg with a time of 27:23.9. The team were boosted with a strong roster of runners, including the three-teen combo of Willer, Cowley and Rankin, plus the older guard of Blacoe, Scaife and Catalan. John Scaife’s time of 36:01 for the first 10km leg saw him finish in 5th place. The overall winners of the event, Ipswich Jaffa A, were only 15 minutes in front of the top Hares team. Second placed Hares team was the Tri 2 group who finished in an overall strong position of 25th. The consistent team saw all six runners finish within 14 places of each other in their own respective races. The other three teams all finished in decent positions of 62nd, 64th and 69th. Race4Business - Chelmsford Wincer Kievenaar Architects running team made up of Hadleigh Hares, Mat Blacoe, John Scaife, James Rush and Mark Russell successfully retained the Fastest Team award at the annual Race4Business event in Chelmsford in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The Hadleigh-based architectural practice took on some of the region's largest employers with more than 800 runners completing the 3.5 mile course. Three of the Hares finished in the top 10 to comfortably take the 2012 title. Gosfield Park Olympic Triathlon 2012 - 8th July Doug Grimwade, Richard Hanley, Steve Bowen and Nick Salway took part in a very wet Gosfield Olympic Triathlon on Sunday 8th July. The race comprised a 1500m swim in the murky waters of Gosfield Lake, a 2-lap 40k ride around the drenched roads surrounding the lake and a slightly shortened 9.2km cross country run (shortened due to a pond bursting its banks). It was obviously going to be a bad day for punctures on the road and Grimwade foolishly opted to save weight and ride without a repair kit and spare tyre - schoolboy error. Hanley was hoping to consolidate on his good performances so far this season, Salway was racing only his second Olympic distance race in 5 years, Bowen was looking to win his age group
again and Grimwade was quietly confident that this time, finally, he would pip Hanley and be the first Hare home. Hanley had very good swim and Grimwade's was better than normal, both exiting the water in 24:02 and 25:27 respectively, followed by Salway and Bowen, neck and neck with only 22 seconds between them. Onto the bikes and Grimwade was off like a rocket, determined not to led Hanley build on his lead. Then disaster struck and the inevitable happened - Grimwade punctured towards the end of the first lap and without a spare tyre, had to abandon the race. Hanley ploughed on and excellent bike and run legs saw him finish in 2:11:23 in a magnificent 5th place overall. Salway managed to put some distance between himeself and Bowen and finished in 2:30:11 in 33rd place, whilst Bowen finished in 45th place in 2:35:19. Grimwade spent the remainder of the race watching Salway dance around in T2 with some very amusing calf cramps and muttering incoherently that 'I could have had Hanley this time, I really could'. Distances: 1500m swim / 40km bike / 9.2km run, Finishers: 87 Friday Five - 6th July Well, it was certainly warm, and it was certainly flat, and the final event in this year’s Friday 5 series brought out a large contingent of Hares to race around the lanes of Great Bentley. Before the main event, as usual, was the junior race. Elizabeth Stewart was the only Hare in the race this time, running well and finishing the one mile course in just 8:11. Elizabeth was 3rd girl U12 in 08:11 - only 22 seconds difference from 1st girl! In the main event there was an excellent turnout of 14 Hares. The flat and fast course produced at least one PB for Corinna Hussey who finished 8th in her age group, and some good times for the rest of the team. First back was David Willer in 30:38, 3rd in age group, closely followed by Adam Johnson and Toby Rankin who were 5th and 6th respectively in their age groups.

Well done David! This Former head up and reluctant breast stroker, David Olive, can now say he is an open water swimmer. After weeks of training at Hadleigh Pool and a setback chest infection of 3 weeks!! David transformed into a head down front crawler. He competed in the Great East swim on fathers day. The event is held at Alton Water and was postponed for 24 hours, for the first time in a four history, due to adverse weather. David swam a mile in open water in a chilly 13.5 degrees in gusts and tides. He broke the hour in a time of 57:10 minutes. He also raised over £400 for the charity Centre Point which helps homeless youngsters, supporting them with housing, learning, health and life skills. Congratulations and well done from Jane, Tom and Ben and all the family and friends who supported and sponsored him. We are very proud of you.
