Work on a brand-new multi-million pound community facility for the residents of Hadleigh and surrounding villages officially started on 16th November. Groundwork preparations on the Hadleigh Community Facility finally began on land off Stonehouse Road, in the town, late last month. Hadleigh residents have been waiting for two years for the £2.4m two-storey unit comprising a dance studio, gym and a community room to be built on land near the town’s swimming pool. It is hoped that the new facility will be open to the public by late summer of 2012. Cllr David Wood, Chairman of Babergh District Council, said: “I am delighted that work on Hadleigh’s Community Facility is finally underway. “It has been a long and sometimes difficult road to get here but now work is starting, the vision will become a reality. “This will be a facility of which Hadleigh can be really proud and I look forward to it opening next year.” In 2009, Babergh had to delay building work in order to comply with, what was then, a comparatively new piece of legislation. A provision in the Commons Act (2006) meant that the Council had to delay any building work to allow a two-year period to elapse during which applications could be considered as to whether some of the land needed for the facility could be classed as a ‘ town green’. Members of Babergh’s Strategy Committee gave the go ahead in January for money for the scheme to be released - even though nothing would happen on site for a number of months – to ensure minimal delays once the project could finally go ahead. In February, South Suffolk Leisure Trust - which already runs Hadleigh’s swimming pool on Babergh’s behalf - was awarded management of the new facility when it is built. Hadleigh Town Council is making a significant annual revenue contribution to the project of almost £30,000 and is delighted that the long wait for the new building is almost over. The £2.4m budget from Babergh has been earmarked specifically for the new facility for some time (and so is not ‘new’ money) and is in addition to the recent £500k refurbishment of the changing rooms and reception area of Hadleigh Swimming Pool.
Babergh Chairman’s Charity Cash Two charities are £2,000 better off – thanks to the fundraising efforts of Babergh’s Chairman. Cllr David Wood took over as Babergh’s Chairman in April last year. Cllr Wood had a successful first year fundraising for The Fire Fighters’ Charity and Sue Ryder Care at The Chantry, in Ipswich – two charities he has close personal connections to. When he was re-elected to the Chairman position in April this year, Cllr Wood announced his fundraising efforts for the year ahead would be for The Royal British Legion (RBL) and Sue Ryder Care at The Chantry, in Ipswich. Cllr Wood chose the above charities after experiencing, first hand, the wonderful care given to patients at The Chantry when a friend was treated there. The nurses at The Chantry provide long-term, respite and day care for people with acquired brain injury and chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's Disease. “I have experience of both of these charities and the amazing work that they do,” Cllr Wood said. “I have had a long association with the RBL, ever since I was a young boy standing outside the Co-Op, in Ipswich, holding the collection tin for my grandmother. It has long and happy memories and what better way to support their 90th anniversary year than to have them as one of my chosen charities?” Last week, Cllr Wood presented two cheques at a special afternoon event, held in Babergh’s offices in Hadleigh. Dawne Hart, Area Fundraising Manager for Sue Ryder, was handed £1,000 and Adrienne Wakeling, County Manager, Royal British Legion, was presented with £1,000. The money was raised from proceeds from the Chairman’s Civic Reception in September. Cllr Wood said: “Both of these charities do brilliant work and rely on donations to help them continue with it. “I am delighted to be able to present such high amounts to each charity and I would like to thank everyone for giving their money so generously.”

Bildeston History Quarterly A new history magazine for Bildeston is out now I have lived in Bildeston for over forty years and I am very interested in local history, so I have designed this quarterly magazine to promote the history of the village and its surrounding countryside. Each issue will contain a miscellany of articles featuring people, places and events of the past. Issue 1 includes a survey of ‘Travellers Tales’, comments made in the past about Bildeston by diarists, travel writers and architectural historians, not all of which are favourable! Also featured is an article about shopping in Bildeston during the 1870’s, when John Crickmore ran what is now called Bank House Stores. The story of Bildeston’s two towers is told; the clock tower is featured on the front cover, while photographs of the church tower show its medieval glory, the day it collapsed in 1975 and its present form. Three regular features start in this issue. ‘Lords of the Manor’ will look at characters who have been Bildeston’s lords over the centuries and starts with Edith, the last Anglo-Saxon queen of England. The stories of our homes are held in their title deeds and ‘Hidden Histories’ will feature such tales over the centuries, beginning with Verandah Cottage in High Street. Who would have thought that a land-locked village like Bildeston would have such strong connections with the Royal Navy? ‘Links with the Sea’ begins with the story of HMS Bildeston. I would like you to make contributions to the magazine; these can be personal reminiscences or original research and, of course, letters are always welcome. I hope that you enjoy reading Bildeston History Quarterly as much as I enjoyed putting the magazine together. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 1 (Winter 2011-2012) is out now, price £3. Available from Bank House Stores, High Street, Bildeston, Keith Avis Newsagents and Idler Bookshop, Hadleigh

Ipswich Town have joined with the leading local age charity, Age UK Suffolk, to officially launch their Spread the Warmth campaign. The campaign highlights the problems that many older people can face during winter. In Suffolk alone more than 250 older people die needlessly as a result of the cold during the winter months. Spread the Warmth aims prevent frailer older people suffering this winter, to reduce the number of preventable winter deaths among people in later life, and to make this time of year better for those who may have otherwise nowhere to turn. The launch of the campaign was celebrated by members of the Ipswich Town squad kicking a giant orange football, symbolising the colour of fire and warmth. The Club is particularly supporting the charity’s challenge to all Suffolk residents to ‘be a good neighbour’ to elderly people they know. Former Northern Ireland international player and manager and Ipswich Town legend Bryan Hamilton was also on hand to show his support. “We can all join the Spread the Warmth team this winter and we are urging everyone to look out for elderly people in their neighbourhood during cold weather. Why not call round and introduce yourself now, so your older neighbour will know who you are when bad weather strikes and you knock on their door to offer a helping hand. If you’re worried about an older neighbour at any time, then just ring Age UK Suffolk on Ipswich 35 99 11 and have a chat.” Daphne Savage, the charity’s Chief Executive said: “The most worrying aspect of the statistics is that much colder countries than ours have lower ‘excess winter deaths’, so there seems no good reason why these are not preventable. We are using Spread the Warmth to highlight the issues here in Suffolk and we are very grateful that our football club wants to support our most vulnerable older people too.” “We want people to know that we welcome their calls,” Daphne Savage added. “Whether it’s for themselves, or on behalf of an elderly relative or neighbour. We may not know all the answers, but we will always know someone who does. Our advice is free and independent and all about older people having some choices and control over their lives.” Age UK Suffolk will be working in a number of ways to help local older people to get through the winter. They are encouraging older people to prepare for the colder weather and have a range of free booklets available including ‘Winter Wrapped Up’ which gives lots of useful information (including two free thermometer to help people avoid hypothermia) and ‘Keep the cold out this winter’ which includes seasonable recipes and reminders about keeping warm. Older people are advised to keep their heating on during the cold weather and contact Age UK Suffolk if they are worried about their fuel bills. Call 01473 284 251 to request free copies of the booklets or to talk about your fuel bill worries. Also on offer are confidential benefit checks to ensure retired people are getting their maximum income – call Age UK Suffolk’s Benefits helpline on 01449 674 222.

Routine but not mundane at Fidelis It’s been a funny ha-ha sort of month with cooking, shopping, walking and a touch of drama. No change there then for the ladies of Fidelis except that all these everyday happenings in a club context seemed less routine. The drama came courtesy of the satirical singing trio, Fascinating Aida who had included The New Wolsey Theatre in their Cheap Flights Tour. There was plenty of new, highly topical material between more familiar, raunchy favourites and all delivered with the polish and aplomb of opera singers. The cooking was deftly carried out by chef Simon Cook of Smugglers Catering fame. He resisted calls for a ‘naked’ chef performance and instead wowed his audience with a cookery demo and samples of his tasty two course meal. After these passive activities the ladies did manage to do their own shopping. Happily, it was not for the usual mundane bread and milk type goodies but for rather more attractive items like jewellery, feminine accessories, gifts and cards. Phoenix Cards, Beadelles and Vanillerize Accessories created a wonderful display of merchandise and members needed no persuading to start their Christmas shopping or treat themselves. As no one had to go far for any of the above, the Super Tramps rambling group took care of the healthy side of things with an autumn walk round Kersey followed by a refreshing pick me up at The Orangerie. I was amused to read a letter from one of your number in the last edition largely complaining that I should be wearing a hard hat when I appeared in a picture in front of an avenue of port-a-loos. My adoring fan went on to consider the attire in which I had been seen in the High Street. I suppose that scrutiny arrives with celebrity but I am always delighted and grateful to have your attention. I thought that you may like to see a picture published in the South Eastern Section magazine of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club. Here I am with my boater; is that his chauffeur Frank (in partial view), I hear you say. I treated a party to a most unusual evening this month at the Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds when the organ accompanied the 1925 silent film of Phantom of the Opera. The Cathedral sports a Harrison & Harrison four manual organ completed in 2010. It has 3,500 pipes. I have heard the organ on several occasions and to my mind the sound does not grow to “fill” the body of the Cathedral. The organist, David Briggs, improvised throughout and this was the 251st occasion that he had done this. The chill of the November evening amongst the shadows of the Cathedral were atmospheric indeed. I know that you are always delighted to see my three little miniature dachshunds. Unfortunately, Heidi had to have an operation to remove a small growth. We are all so attached to our pets so when this sort of thing occurs it is such a worry. Heidi is however recovering well. Thank you to all of you who have enquired as to my mother’s progress. I am hoping that her leg will be out of plaster on 1 December and she should then be a little more mobile. The costs of running any business today are escalating and affect us as much as anyone else. My firm is attractive to its clients by measure of our personal service as much as cost. I do though consider our charges to be reasonable. Do be careful if you are obtaining quotes from others for property work. I understand that a fee is given with a number of extras, as if they are the “norm” (e.g. engrossment charges, costs for completing forms etc) when they are not. Do use a local service and, as always, we look forward to hearing

INSECURITIES CAN LEAD TO BURGLARIES Suffolk Police is reminding people in Babergh to lock their doors and windows following a spate of burglaries in the area. Since the beginning of May there have been 20 house burglaries due to insecurities. Many of the burglaries could have been prevented if a few simple steps to secure the property had been made. Police are urging all homeowners to take simple precautions in order to minimise the chances of homes being targeted. Verity Line Suffolk Police Crime Reduction Officer for the Babergh district said: “By leaving your home unlocked – during the day or night – and not checking your car is locked you make life easy for criminals. Breaking into a home or car often creates noise, usually takes longer and carries the risk of injury to the offender. It also increases the chances of them being caught, either in the act or through forensic traces. “There seems to be a sense, particularly in rural areas of the county but often in our towns too, that there is no need to lock vehicles or homes. While in some respects it’s pleasing to see that people feel safe enough to leave their vehicles and homes unlocked, the reality is that we are making it very easy for criminals to steal our personal possessions. “The misery and distress caused by burglars cannot be under-estimated. We are committed to finding those responsible and putting them before the courts. “Locking doors and windows is just one of the simple steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of being targeted by opportunist burglars and thieves.“ Other things you can do include: • Record serial numbers of valuable items and take photographs of them. This helps police to identify the items if they are recovered and can help prove cases of burglary, theft and handling stolen goods. • Property mark your postcode onto all valuable items with a permanent marker, UV pen or with a property marking solution from companies such as Smartwater, SelectaDNA or Crimestoppers – digital cameras, videos, DVDs, camcorders, mobile phones, etc, can all be marked in this way. • With the dark nights approaching make it look as though someone is home. Put your lights on timers, put a radio on a talk station – both can make it appear as though more than one person is home and therefore makes your home a less appealing prospect for a burglar. • Remember to lock all outbuildings. Shed alarms, along with property marking pens, can be purchased quite cheaply from all police stations and can provide a highly audible warning that can alert you to any breakin and make it uncomfortable for the burglar to continue. • Consider installing obvious security measures – CCTV, alarms, security lighting can be effective deterrents and don’t have to cost a fortune. Anyone who would like more advice on protecting their home, vehicle and other property can contact their local Crime Reduction Officer at Suffolk Police by calling 101. Police are also asking that you call if you see anyone acting suspiciously. Please try to note the description of the person you are suspicious of, including clothing, and then contact police immediately using 999. Hadleigh Has Talent Thanks to everyone who thronged the Town hall for this years live final. We had a fantastic evening with some great performances. Don’t miss seeing the winners at the lighting up ceremony! Kicking things off were our resident band for the evening "Georgette and the distraction" who entertained before the show and during the interval, they played an excellent set and really got the crowd going. Our under 16 competition saw some really impressive performances.12 year old Ellen Clarke came out the winner with a superbly choreographed and beautifully sung performance from Oliver. After another great set from Georgette and the distractions our adults took to the stage, we saw some excellent guitar playing and singing from Emma Louise Rayner, but a strong vocal from Kay Griggs carried the competition. Watch out for our winners at the Lighting up ceremony December 4th, when they`ll be on-stage at 5pm. Thanks to our judges and helpers for making a great evening. And don`t forget to watch out for Hadleigh Has Talent 2012 Malcolm Hollister

Will Bishop Jewellery Design Will Bishop’s jewellery business, based in the Suffolk village of Boxford, has been going for some 15 years. His unique style is much influenced by his early experience in fine art sculpture, and by his travels, notably in East and South Africa, where he went after obtaining an Honours Degree in Sculpture at the Canterbury College of Art and Design. After then completing a diamond setting course at the London Guildhall University he set up his studio in Suffolk, where he has created many striking and original jewellery designs, working mainly in silver, gold, and platinum, incorporating precious and semi-precious stones. He particularly enjoys creating unique designs for individual clients, and his commissions include work for the band U2 and for the fashion company YMC. He has also carried out a number of commissions for sculpture, including a bronze for the Department of Education and Skills as well as a number of portraiture heads. He relishes such challenges, and all his work, in jewellery as well as sculpture, reflects this individuality and originality, as can clearly be seen in his new online shop. www.willbishop.co.uk Tel: 01787 210251

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre
Curious,
but not all insurers provide specialist home insurance for high value homes and lifestyles.
We do.
Would you believe it, it’s our 30th Edition this month and how appropriate to celebrate this in the lead up to Christmas. I detect a quiet excitement (Can that be?) amongst the Herd because I know they enjoy this particular month when The Shelley Centre holds it’s Carol Service at the Shelley Church: no, neither the Herd nor I attend but, a majority of the Riders, Helpers and their families and carers try to make the day with a gathering at The Centre for mince pies, sausage rolls, Christmas cake and perhaps……a small tipple of mulled wine for some! Squidgy and Camilla then lead us to the Church and the question this year is will there be a real baby to take the part of baby Jesus? We will all have to wait and see! I am hearing that the Helpers enjoyed their Christmas Dinner earlier with their competitive spirit coming to the fore in vying to win the after dinner quiz so wonderfully put together and managed by our Chairman, Jan Derbyshire, in her usual flamboyant style. There is always a good atmosphere among the Helpers who give of their time for free and this can be summed up by what Gill told me the other day. Gill said “I saw the request for Helpers from our local news magazine about two years ago. Although I had had little experience with horses in recent times I decided to come along. I really love being with the children and the horses and look forward to coming to The Centre each week”. The Herd tell me that they find it gratifying that so many people are willing to help others and in spite of the current trend to quote ‘The Big Society’ this is nothing new for The Shelley Centre where it has been ongoing for many years. Well, another year rolls to an end so from The People, The Herd, and not forgetting me, at Shelley, may we wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas in the surroundings of your family and friends and that may 2012 bring all that you wish for……this is Ebony signing off until next year….bye, bye. News from The Station Hello readers, and welcome to this month’s edition of news from the Police Station. I write this article having just been involved with the annual Remembrance parade in Hadleigh. I always feel very privileged to be present for this event, and it is a humbling and emotional experience to see our local troops, and the community, pay tribute to those who have fallen in conflicts both past and present. I thank those of you who were caught in the road closures for your patience and understanding, and it was also great to see so many people out in support for the parade. On Monday 7 November 2011 your local team were involved in a catalytic convertor marking scheme at Crockatt Road. Reports of thefts of these cats continue to rise over the County, and we invited previous victims, local businesses and general members of the public to come along and have theirs marked free of charge. We thank Simon and David Foster of Crockatt Garage for their generosity in PC 1455 Paisley and PCSO 3173 giving up their time and premises Bignell with the proprietor of for the event that saw 41 vehicles Ainger Holbrows, marked, and to their parents who Andy Brietsprecher kept the free tea, coffee and biscuits flowing throughout the morning. Suffolk Police have managed to secure funding for etching equipment to be provided to two of our local garages so they can offer the cat marking service, and I encourage you all to contact either Crockatt Garage, Seager Court, Hadleigh, or Ainger Holbrows, High Street, Hadleigh to arrange the marking of your vehicle. The process takes a few minutes and will leave your converter etched permanently with your vehicle registration number. This is invaluable in preventing thieves from stealing these expensive and sought after parts. In other news, we continue to build on the relationship we have with the Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) Team from Babergh District Council. Between the Police and PC 1455 Paisley and PCSO 3173 the Council we have a large range with directors of Crockatt Garage David and Simon Foster of tools and skills that allow us to tackle ASB in a firm way. Issuing Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABC’s) is just one of the many ways that we can look to improve the behaviour of people around our Town in an attempt to steer them away from committing criminal offences. In the past this has proved very successful, and very few people subject to these civil agreements breach the agreed conditions. Suffolk Police reported a peaceful Halloween and Bonfire night this year.

A new scheme to help provide training and experience for local people who are not currently working has been launched in Sudbury. The scheme based at Gainsborough’s House will provide volunteer placements for anyone over 18 wanting to learn a variety of skills from operating tills or dealing with the public to marketing and administration through hands-on learning. Everyone can be involved including Mums with a bit of time on their hands now the kids are at school to people over 50 who have taken early retirement. Gainsborough’s House is the birthplace of the artist Thomas Gainsborough. As well as the museum and art gallery there is a wellequipped Print Workshop, Coffee and Gift shop. Gainsborough’s House provides a host of activities and courses to the public and participants in the scheme will have the opportunity to be involved in specific activities as well as the day-to-day administration of a busy museum. Nick Winch, Project Manager, said; “This scheme supports people to develop new skills whilst experiencing life in a nationally respected museum and gallery. Those seeking work will be helped to produce an up-to-date CV. However, the aim of the project is as much about the experiences that people have whilst volunteering.” The scheme, which is supported by the European Union Social Fund and the Skills Funding Agency through The Consultancy Home Counties, runs until May 2012 with participants expected to undertake a minimum of 9 hours volunteering. Participants will be helped to develop their abilities, building their confidence and equipping them with a variety of transferable skills. Anyone interested in finding out more should contact Nick Winch on 01787 372958 or email nick@gainsborough.org

In Hadleigh we did receive calls of a minor nature, and on Halloween spoke with large pockets of teenage groups around the Town centre. The majority of these people were good natured and respectful to Police. We did seize some alcohol on Bonfire night from those under the age of 18, and with Christmas now just around the corner, it is an appropriate time to remind you all of the ramifications of young people consuming alcohol in public places. Section 30 of the Policing and Crime Act creates a criminal offence of persistently possessing alcohol in a public place for anyone under the age of 18. Alcohol will be seized and visits made to parents. A young person could get a criminal record if they are caught in public with alcohol. Any adult found supplying a young person would also be prosecuted. We will also disperse any groups who we believe are likely to contribute to alcohol related disorder, and this includes those not in possession, or not consuming alcohol. This direction can be given to any person over 10 years old. These are very strong powers, and are aimed at reducing the fear of crime and disorder in our communities. Whilst we want people to enjoy themselves, it is important that we all are able to enjoy the Town and its many amenities in a safe manner. Many of you will now be aware that Suffolk Police have changed their telephone number. In order to call the Police in a non-emergency please dial 101. This new, and more memorable number replaces the previous switchboard number, and should be more efficient. To find out more about your local Safer Neighbourhood Team, or tell us about an event or query that you might have, please visit www.safersuffolk.org.uk. From all at Hadleigh Police Station, and the Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team, we wish you all a very merry Christmas, and a peaceful New Year. Hads Juniors: Peter Pan Junior productions have become traditional at this time of year for HADS and have built up a deserved reputation for being great fun for cast and audiences alike. It is the one time a year when the young people of Hadleigh get to show off what it is they can do and they never fail to deliver. With opening night soon upon us rehearsals are drawing to a close and the finishing touches are being added to the Junior section’s production of Peter Pan. Peter, Wendy, Tinkerbell and Captain James Hook are all polishing their swords, combing their hair, flapping their wings and grooming their moustaches in preparation. The lost boys, Pirates and Indians are all ready to go as well. The cast have been working extremely hard learning dances, songs, lines and some fighting in order to bring J. M. Barrie’s classic story for all the family to Hadleigh. Come Thursday 8th December the Town Hall will be transformed into a theatre for the young cast to display their considerable talents. The only thing missing so far is YOU!!! Tickets Are Available From Walter Wright and The Idler in Hadleigh High Street. So Put A Smile On A Child’s Face, And An Even Bigger One On Yours

Thanks to all those customers who have kindly donated to my siser-inlaws cancer fund. The total is so far over £200 and is going towards FDA approved clinical trials at the Burzywski Clinic in Houston, Texas. Lauras GBM Type 4 which is considered terminal here in the UK has shrunk 27% since starting the antineoplasten treatment two months ago. My brother has so far raised 75% of the £100,000 which goes towards the expected 1 year treatment.
Can you help Emma? I am currently training to be a family therapist. A key part of this is learning to think about, talk about and generally engage with issues of culture and any felt sense of difference; this could either be between them and the society they live in, or between them and their therapist. As such, I am looking for a family (that is, at least two generations) who might be willing to be interviewed. Specifically, I am seeking a family whose background is significantly different from my own. For example, I am white, British, and from a Catholic background; other potentially important factors include the fact that I would typically be described as middle-class, I am heterosexual, and I went to university. If you would be interested in participating, I would hope to meet with you for about an hour, at a time and place of your convenience before 14th December. The focus of the discussion would be on ideas relating to your family’s cultural heritage, thinking about associated beliefs, norms and ‘rules’ in addition to how these things might affect your everyday life. I would also draw out your family tree so we can track changes and consistencies across different generations. Finally, I would need to record our conversation so that I can later type it out and remove any information that might identify your family, before writing and submitting an essay reflecting on my learning and experience of the process. At this stage it is important for me to highlight that although my professional background is that of a Clinical Psychologist (a talking therapist working in the NHS with people with mental health problems), the interview will not be problem-focused or a form of therapy. Instead, I will have my student ‘hat’ on, as someone who is keen to find ways to talk about and learn about life in a different kind of family or community. If you have any questions or would be interested in participating, I would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact me using the details below. Mobile number: 0772 684 418 Email address: emma_bennett0910@hotmail.co.uk Many thanks, Dr. Emma Bennett
Christmas Lighting Up Its nearly time for the Christmas Lighting Up on Sunday 4th December from 3pm to 6pm in the Market Place. The full timetable is not yet ready but check out the web site www.hadleighents.webs.com to find out more details. If you would like to come down in fancy dress – prizes will be available. We hope you are able to join us and let me be the first to wish you a Happy Christmas on behalf of the Town Forum. Cllr. Trev Clarke
Edwardstone Christmas Fair – A Sparkling Success The 2011 Edwardstone Christmas fair, which took place in the church last week, raised over £4000 for the church and village hall, and local Sudbury charity Success After Stroke. Given the current economic climate, the organisers were delighted to see so many people supporting their local fair, enjoying seasonal refreshments and a chance to catch up with their friends and neighbours, as well as starting their Christmas shopping. We would also like to say a huge “thank you” to the local businesses who sponsored us, and also to everyone who contributed to the fair, either by donating to the produce stall and tombola, or by giving up their time on Thursday and Friday to man stalls and help with the organisation of the event.

Recognition for Bildeston Crown
Celebrate!
The Bildeston Crown is ranked 107 in The Sunday Times “The Food List”, Britain’s Top 200 Restaurants, compiled in association with Harden’s. In addition The Bildeston Crown comes third in the country’s Top Gastropubs. The List is compiled for The Sunday Times by UK restaurants guide publisher Harden’s using the reports of genuine diners, who are asked to rate the places they have visited. This year more than 8,000 people, including many Sunday Times readers, submitted more than 80,000 restaurant reports. The Sunday Times' rankings are based solely on the food the restaurant serves, though the scores for ambience were used in the event of a tie. Comment from Chris Lee, Head Chef at The Bildeston Crown: “It is always great to be recognised for doing something well. To be ranked at 107 in Britain’s Top 200 Restaurants and 3rd in the list of UK Gastropubs is just fantastic. It is full credit to the team here at The Bildeston Crown and to our customers who return again and again and to reassure us that we have got it right.” If you subscribe to The Times website – you can see “The Food List” at http://features.thesundaytimes.co.uk/foodlist/live/

Trafalgar Night Hadleigh is full of people with good ideas and commitment to see them through. Two such people are Maggie & Erik Solomon who for some time had been looking for a creative way to raise money for Help for Heroes. It’s only a short step away from attending a St. George’s Night celebration in April to planning a celebration of Nelson for October. Maggie and Mike Ager of the Kings Head produced a relevant menu at an attractive price and then Maggie & Erik set about inviting guests. Ten couples signed up for the evening and the programme included singing patriotic songs, enthusiastically even if occasionally out of tune. Erik gave the loyal toast, Brian Riley proposed the toast to the immortal memory and Maggie recited John Masefield’s “Sea Fever” (I must go down to the sea again…). Every diner was surcharged a donation of £5, which did away for the need for a raffle. The donations were gift aided so that the charity could claim back the Standard Rate of Income Tax on all donations. Overall the dinner and Maggie’s other activities raised over £300 for HfH. Next year’s Trafalgar Night celebration and fund raiser is already in the diary. Brian Riley

Jerry’s Diary John Clark saw a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker flying from trees opposite his house in Bildeston. Anyone seeing this Sparrow sized Woodpecker are very lucky, because it has become very hard to find these last few years. Matt Garnham saw Honey Buzzard with Common Buzzard at Kettlebaston on 23rd, he also saw Peregrine over Elmsett heading north. He saw 3+ Honey Buzzard at Elmsett on Oct 1st. My first Fieldfare sighting was 2 at Aldham on 15th Oct. Golden Plover, 9 with 30 Lapwing at Shelley on1 4th Oct, 67 Golden Plover at the same site with 81 Lapwing on 6th November. No joy at Giffords Park site, still very dry there. On 12th November I saw 181 Fieldfare perched on top of an Oak tree near shooting box Aldham and 93+ Redwing. Ivan Evans was lucky to take this picture of a Woodcock in his neighbours garden, which was happily feeding on a small lawn for 20 minutes in Wilson Road Hadleigh. This bird must have been a tired migrant and dropped down in the garden to rest and feed during the early hours. Out of our local patch, on the Suffolk/Essex border at Catterwade and Mistley walls, a trip down here on 13th November, a sunny morning but with a chilly SE wind. A large group of Avocet, 200+ on the Suffolk side of the river. Other wader species here were, Knot Dunlin, Grey Plover, Golden Plover, Ring Plover, Lapwing, Turnstone, Curlew, Redshank, Greenshank, Oystercatcher, Black-tailed Godwit, and Barwit Snipe. Duck species were, Mallard, Teal, Wigeon, Shelduck, Pintail, Goldeneye and 8+ Red Breasted Mergansers. Other birds here were, several Great Crested Grebes, Cormorant, Little Egret, Brent Geese, Greylag, Canada and 2 Egyptian Geese, Heron, 5 Gull species and Mute Swans. There was also a pair of Black Swans. Tricks (Trichomonosis) has now been found in several other species of birds. Starling and birds of prey, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Buzzard which must have eaten birds with the disease. This disease was also found in caged birds and some game species coming into the western area of the UK. Tricks has also jumped into the feral Pigeon and Dove population. I first heard about this disease on the radio in 2004 or 2005, the BTO, RSPB and other s were talking about how serious the disease could be if it jumped over to the wild bird population. Many thanks to all those who have contacted me over the past year with bird sightings, if you see an unusual bird please get in touch and I will try to identify for you. Just email me at jerry@keithavis.co.uk

Double World Karate Champ A triumphant Charlotte Stenning recently returned from Turin with two gold medals to add to her rapidlyexpanding collection. Charlotte, aged 10 and a brown belt in traditional karate, was Shotokan extremely proud and honoured to represent England at the 13th FSKA Karate World Championships, Turin 2011. The gruelling event took place over two days with more than 600 competitors coming from an array of countries from Argentina to Uzbekistan. On Day One, Charlotte competed in the individual Kata (for girls aged 910 years, brown belts) and came away with her first gold after a fantastic performance. She demonstrated great speed and strength and delivered a perfect Kata, obtaining exceptionally high marks from all 5 judges. Day Two brought Charlotte’s toughest challenge to date in individual Kumite (sparring). This has never been Charlotte’s favourite event, but in this Championship in particular, she showed amazing resilience, skill and a true “fighting spirit”. Having made it through to the semi-final of the competition, Charlotte was level on points with her Israeli challenger before receiving a nasty kick to the throat. For her age group, the sparring is supposed to be light contact but head gear, full body armour and gloves are worn. However, her opponent managed to land a powerful kick to her wind pipe where there was a gap in the protective gear. After being checked over by a doctor, she was awarded a penalty point and she was through to the final! However, given the many bouts that the organisers needed to get through time was short and she was given just two minutes to recover before the final. On being asked if she was able to continue by the head judge, she responded that “she was; she wanted to carry on…..to win!” Charlotte and her Polish competitor both scored with punches before Charlotte landed an Ippon (knock out) kick to the back of her opponent’s head and she was awarded the contest and her second gold! Not one to sit back on her laurels, Charlotte continues to train at Colchester Karate Academy (where she has trained for the last 5 years), preparing for other competitions and her next belt grading. Well Done Charlotte!

News from the ‘ologies New Hope for Arthritis Sufferers A drug used to treat osteoporosis has been found to rebuild cartilage around joints and therefore has the potential to treat millions of people with osteoarthritis. Arthritis is major cause of disability and in the UK it affects over 8½ million people. Osteoarthritis is a painful condition in which the joint cartilage slowly wastes away with the result that bones at joints rub together. This is particularly common in the hands, knees, hips and spine. Normally it occurs in people over 50 years of age but it can develop at any time as a result of injury or over-use of joints as in the case of highly active sports people or those doing heavy physical work. The cause of arthritis is not really known but there is a belief that it is genetically inherited, meaning that if one or other of your parents has it, then they may have passed it on to you. At present there is no cure for osteoarthritis but there are treatments that can slow down its progress and there are a number of pain-killer and antiinflammatory drugs that help to relieve the painful symptoms. However, in an investigation carried out by Dr Michael Zuscik and Dr Randy Rosier of the University of Rochester’s Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation it was noticed that in some patients who suffer from both osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, the symptoms of arthritis improved after taking an established and FDA approved osteoporosis drug. To find out what was happening, the University’s research team used mice to demonstrate that where knee arthritis had occurred, taking the drug daily for one month resulted in damaged knee cartilage (the connective tissue in the knee joint) increasing in thickness by up to 32 percent. Put simply, a block was put on the cause of connective tissue reduction and a boost was given to connective tissue production. If these initial laboratory experiments can be proven in a full study there is the hope for millions of arthritis sufferers that it can be stopped and reversed. “Given that the drug is already FDA approved,” says Dr Zuscick “our experimental findings make a compelling case for further clinical study of this drug in the context of arthritis." Let us hope that all this is will eventually be good news for arthritis sufferers everywhere. Meanwhile there is positive news for overweight arthritis suffers who fear that taking exercise will only make their joints more painful. New research carried out by the American Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina confirms that physical activity really does improve arthritis symptoms and it doesn’t matter if you are overweight. "What's surprising is that exercise, without substantial weight loss, can be beneficial to the joints," says Farshid Guilak, PhD, professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University. "Ideally, it would be best to be fit and lose a little weight, but this shows that exercise alone can improve the health of your joints." Many people mistakenly believe that being overweight puts a greater load on arthritic joints and as a result they become less active and avoid taking physical, load-bearing exercise. However, it seems that the additional weight we might be carrying is not the problem as it doesn’t really add to the load on our joints or make a joint more painful. The harm is caused by not taking exercise and not keeping the joint moving. To make matters worse, the combination of obesity and lack of exercise can lead to chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. So exercise is extremely important, it strengthens bones, builds muscle and provides a myriad of other benefits that we all know about. For arthritis sufferers, stronger muscles give better support to the limbs which means that pressure is reduced at arthritic joints. That in itself should be a good enough incentive to keep up the exercise programme, but the new research in mice shows that gentle aerobic exercise actually reduces inflammation even in those who are overweight. Even modest improvements could have a major impact if the findings are borne out in the tests that are now underway in people; the results of which will be published early in 2012. If dietary changes are also made then the benefits of combined weight loss and exercise can be truly significant. As Dr Guilak says, "This shows that if you are obese, it's better to exercise, sometimes pain can be a barrier to starting exercise, but if you overcome it, in the long term, it's better." This is the second in a series of articles for readers who have an appetite for news about science and latest research (the ‘ologies). Hadleigh & District Garden Club For the Clubs’ November meeting we had the pleasure of welcoming several members of Monks Eleigh Garden Club to a very well attended meeting, to hear Ric Staines talk on “Holistic Horticulture - Gardening Natures Way”. If I tried to give a synopsis of the entire evenings talk it would fill the entire H.C.News and I’d still be going! So, “are you sitting comfortably, then I’ll begin”! I think we all more or less understood most if not all of it. The subject was broken down into categories of Organics Biodynamics -Permaculture and Co-creativity. I’m sure we all understood Organics as most of us regard ourselves as organic gardeners or at least 90% organic, the other topics were definately mind stretching or possibly it is my elderly brain that isn’t up to it, so I decided to consult a dictionary (Chambers as O.E.D. didn’t acknowledge all those words anyway) to define these concepts, so, here goes:- ORGANICS “related to, derived from, like or of the nature of an organ (in any sense).. produced without or not involving the use of fertilisers and particles not wholly of plant or animal origin”. BIODYNAMICS “dealing with activities of living organisms (of a system of land cultivation) fertilising with organic materials only .....bioecology being the branch of ecology dealing with the inter-relationship of living organisms and the environment”. PERMACULTURE “ a system of natural agriculture requiring generous mulching, no artificial fertilisers, use of natural resources and only minimal weeding”. CO-CREATIVITY - “to bring into being or form out of nothing” I’ll leave you to work that one out and I hope everyone is now a lot wiser and knows what our (often very amusing) talk was all about, although to tell the truth it seems to pretty well all come down to what most of us take to be organic gardening which we do all understand I think?! “simples”! Next month’s meeting is on 19th December and is in party mood with a quiz to keep us on our toes (very possibly, literally) knowing Phil and Chris, who once again have kindly offered to run it! No meeting in January. so next talk will be 13th February by John Rye on the development of his garden 1975 to 2012. Happy christmas and New Year to you all. Ruth Allen 822323

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts The warmer than usual October has meant that in Mid November I still have a few flowers on my dahlias and fuchsias, and that a number of plants are somewhat confused and are throwing out a few flowers now when they should be waiting for Spring. This has been true in the greenhouse as well as the garden with a couple of cacti flowering for the second time. When I replaced my greenhouse a few years back I kept some bits that I thought might be useful. These were dumped by my back hedge, which had suckered all round them. I decided to clear this away and plant the stock of bulbs mentioned last month in the cleared space, and then reseed the area with grass. It sounded a simple job, but this area was originally seeded in 1995, and had not been cultivated since. This ground is heavy clay, and it was quite dry which meant I had to find my pick axe in order to break it up. The "little" job took a lot longer than expected. Another heavy job is in prospect. I need to replace my blackcurrant bushes because of big bud, and they are going to take some digging up. My present bushes are a variety called Tenah originally purchased in 1976 and then propagated a couple of times using cuttings. This has served me well but does not seem to be available now, so I am looking to buy a variety called Ben Sarek. Weather Records In October we had 27.9 mm (1.1") of rain, which is rather low. At the end of October the 3 month running total figure stood at 121.1 mm (4.8") , which is back below the average figure again. In October the maximum temperature was 27 Cel (81F) which is incredible warm. The next highest figure which I have from figures back to 1999 is 20 Cel (68F). The minimum was 3 Cel (37F). In October the minimum temperature seems to fall in the range 0 to 6 Cel (32 to 43 F) so this is a normal value. In my garden the ground temperature in mid November is 10 Cel (50F) which is about 3 Cel warmer than usual. Hints In December the popular point of view is that there is nothing to do in the garden, but if you have got a decent sized garden there will almost certainly be jobs that need doing. The exact ones will vary with the garden, but if you grow vegetables and have empty space it will be worth digging it and leaving it fairly rough for the frost to break down. Then we have already had some strong winds, so it will be worth looking at fences and pergolas to see if they need any repairs. It is easier to see what you are doing in Winter than when they are covered by leafy plants. It is also a good time to look at stakes on fruit trees and roses, and ensure that they have not rotted, and that the ties are not so tight that they are restricting growth. A number of you reading this will be wondering what to give a gardener for Christmas. My suggestions are that you avoid gimmicky tools unless you know that is what he or she wants, and stick to something safe like a Garden Token perhaps supported by a catalogue from your favourite nursery. Happy Christmas, John Rye

Dear Sir Time to Make Noise The Department of Culture Media & Sport wishes to deregulate Schedule One of the Licensing Act 2003 (http://www.culture.gov.uk/consultations/8408.aspx). Boring as this sounds it will affect everyone in Hadleigh and beyond. Licensing of events protects our town from event promoters destroying our rights to peaceful enjoyment. The Department’s proposals, would mean that no licence permissions would be needed for any entertainment event/activities for up to 5000 persons. Activities such as amplified live or recorded music, whether indoors or outdoors, could take place in a whole host of different venues – whether in night time economy areas or residential/rural areas. There would be little or no prior scrutiny or enforceable control measures such as limitations on timings, area or frequency. The local, transparent and inclusive licensing system, which has determined and mediated many contested licence applications since 2005 in a balanced and fair manner would be undone at a stroke. What does it mean for us: well for a start there will be no curfew, so events would no longer stop at 11 p.m. but instead could run through the night. There will be no limitation on noise so, for example, a rave at a Local Club could run for days and be heard all over the town. If the Department gets its way then any complaints will be dealt with on a reactive basis and it’s quite possible that the Council and the Police will have had no prior notice of the event and so find it difficult to track down the persons responsible for the nuisance. We have until the 3rd December to let the Department know our views!. Babergh are responding (see http://www.babergh.gov.uk/NR/ rdonlyres/BE20FA1A-E4DC-4003-99EB-C40EDA05A55D/0/L94.pdf) and we should support them by writing vigorously to Nigel Wakelin, Department for Culture, Media and Sport, 2-4 Cockspur Street, London SW1Y 5DH Or email regulated_entertainment_consultation@culture.gsi.gov.uk Remember we have nothing to lose but the peaceful enjoyment of our town! The more noise we generate now will save us from enduring excessive noise in the future. Yours faithfully, Brian Riley
Dear Sir A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of staying at the Crown, a modest B&B in the charming village of Bildeston. The food here is top notch, easily as good as my usual City haunts, yet so reasonably priced. Amazing what marvels these canny Suffolk folk can muster. During my stay, whilst idly fingering a copy this esteemed publication, I stumbled across an advert by my old school chum Gibbo. The funny thing is, for most of his spiel he seemed to bang on about someone else’s business. Old habits die hard, I suppose. At our alma mater, Wenchmister, he always was happy to ‘help out’
the prefects with their prep, thus ensuring that they would turn a blind eye to his nocturnal forays. What a wag. It was little wonder our Ballingdon Club bashes were always so replete with the grog and tuck. I heard that the Headmaster’s housekeeper, Maria, rather tickled his fancy and that he frequently reciprocated, thus giving easy access to the Heads wine cellar and amply stocked larders. Unfortunately, I see that the natives have taken against poor old Gibbo. I say it’s not right to impugn the fellow just because he has an over-abundance of WCs; let alone joshing about owning a Rolls Royce. Surely everyone knows that every well dressed gentleman, and Gibbo, drives a Rolls Royce. What else is a man of his standing to drive, a Bentley, a car so beloved of footballers and lotto winners? How vulgar. Furthermore, I am certain that the poor working folk of Hadleigh and its environs are grateful for a splash of glamour and sunshine in their lives. So kind therefore, of Gibbo to expound upon his extravagant expeditions to warmer climes, and remind us all of the virtue of hard work and the sumptuous rewards an economics graduate can enjoy. A man has to earn a crust, so why not include details of the wonderful food to be had at so-andso’s pub, or who to call should one be without a WC or four. If at the same time he can tenuously link said service, meal or venue etc. with a vaguely relevant legal angle, then let the poor chap alone, I say! Simeon Hoolock
Dear Sir We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all those people who have sent us cards and gifts following the birth of our beautiful daughter, Sarah Bronwyn May. The generosity people have shown has been very touching. Best wishes to you all, Julian & Donna Fincham-Jacques
Dear Sir Yesterday my blue recycling bin was not collected and there was a big orange sticker on it with about 30 items as tickable boxes as to what the problem was - but none of these was ticked. I rang the phone number on it and was asked if I had left a plastic bag in it to which I replied “yes” - it was a split one and clean - to be told it wasn't allowed. I advised that what was in was different from normal and the lady assistant promised to ring back today to advise what should have been ticked. She kindly did so, saying shredded paper was in it which I denied as we have no shredder. On the issue of the plastic bags, a neighbour reminded and showed me that on his blue bin lid there was a permanent sticker listing plastic as acceptable and it included bags. The lady however insisted that new rules were on the back of the calendar sent to each household and, if you receive several like us and know that collections are one day different, you will have not noticed this and recycled it! The upshot is that I have had to go through all the recycling bin and remove anything deemed nonconforming and, if I am lucky, a special collection will occur in 48 hours. I have advised that I think the solution would be new permanent stickers on the blue bins! Please advise anyone you know that the rules have changed! R. A. Smith
Dear Sir On 31st October I attended a meeting called in our Village Hall in Monks Eleigh to discuss the loss of our regular Bus Route 112, following withdrawal of support from County to the operator Chambers on April last and the effect this action is having. A survey had been taken in the Village and approximately 20% of the households have replied. It showed that people had lost their jobs, could not get to Medical Services, travel to shop or have any regular contact for leisure, the young are now being unable to take up educational opportunities or even have visitors. For a significant part of the 500+ population, some would even now consider leaving the community. Many have lost their own important feeling of Independence. We are now six months on and Monks Eleigh like many other villages on the route (Brent Eleigh, Chelsworth, Little Waldingfield, Milden and Bildeston, who also had invited representatives present) now are cut off. I like all at the meeting when we left felt the current provision of public transport in this part of Suffolk was having a serious effect on the well being of our life and the rush to balance a budget has now harmed many people. Hannah also did this for AJ who was diagnosed with cancer in February 2011 but thankfully is now in remission. Hannah raised £727.00 for cancer research UK. We had a great day with all Hannah’s family and friends watching. Love Mum, AJ, Laura, Mica and Nana Price
Poets Corner Reflections I’m not as slim as I would like to be, My reflection tells me something I don’t normally see. I pull my tummy in and look alright, Then let it out again and give myself a fright. I’m so disheartened at what I see I can’t believe its really me. So in the end I draw the line, Then in a few months time I will look just fine. Margaret Blomfield

Hadleigh Hares Athletic Club Peterborough Half Marathon The Perkins Great Eastern Run dawned on a mild end of summer Sunday, 9th October. Billed as one of the fastest half marathons in Britain due to the flat course, the race lived up to expectations. Starting and finishing near the cathedral, the course wound round the suburbs of Peterborough so though the scenery was fairly unremarkable the vocal support was continual and much appreciated, powering Becky Smith to a PB for the half marathon distance in a time of 1. 57. Well done her! Dublin Marathon Congratulations to Corinna Hussey who ran her first marathon in Dublin on the 31st October. The course, which started and finished in the centre of Dublin’s historic Georgian city, was relatively flat, with only two hills to negotiate, but what proved to be incredibly demoralizing were the weather conditions! Stifling humidity for the first 6 miles which turned into pouring cold rain for the remaining 20 miles. The temperature a constant 9 degrees! Corinna started strongly staying with the 4 hour pacer until 14 miles when suddenly she was struck with a painful knee injury, meaning a complete rethink on race strategy! Despite having to walk 4 miles of the 26.2 she managed, with the continued support of an incredibly enthusiastic crowd, to finish in 4.45. Visibly frustrated at having picked up an injury Corinna was however, extremely proud to have raised more than £3000 for Leukemia and Lymphoma Research and is now busy planning her next marathon which will be in London 2013! Cross Country Season Up and Running!

There was a real buzz around Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa last week when the team and large entourage of the England Under 21 football squad came to stay with Head Coach and former England team player, Stuart Pearce, for 6 days. They used The Under 21s – stars of the future the hotel as their outside Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa base for training and to play against Iceland at Colchester Stadium. The team performed brilliantly against Iceland, winning 5 – 0, and many of the hotel staff were given tickets to go and watch their decisive victory. The team then went by coach to watch England play against Spain at Wembley on the Saturday, and then flew from Stansted the next day for their match against Belgium. The squad numbered 47, to include trainers, physios, video analyst, performance analyst and several other security and admin staff. The team trained at both Ipswich Town and Colchester Utd and also made good use of the Peake Fitness Technogym gymnasium and pool during their stay. Many of the team, some of whom are very accomplished golfers, also managed to fit in some golf on one of the hotel’s two championship courses. Stuart Pearce, MBE, Head Coach of the England Under-21s said, “We were thoroughly I impressed by the facilities and the staff at Stoke by Nayland, and would recommend the hotel to any sports team staying in the area.” Stuart Pearce is also the Manager of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Football team. The FA selected the family-owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa to host the team because of its superb facilities as well as its excellent track record in accommodating Premiership teams such as Manchester Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea in the past. The England Ladies Football Team has also stayed at the hotel for a training week. Some of the boys are already playing for Premiership teams, such as talented 18 year old Alex OxladeChamberlain who plays for Arsenal and whose father Mark Chamberlain also played for England. Alex was the youngest English player to score a goal in the Champions League recently. During the team’s stay he was interviewed by ESDN presenter, Darrell Currie, by the roaring fire in the Hotel Lounge and spoke about his recent hat trick when they beat Reykjavik 3 - 0 in October. Other notable players staying at the hotel with the team included Team Captain, Jordon Hendersen who plays for Liverpool and Chelsea’s Josh McEachran. Matt Manning, Operations Director of Stoke by Nayland Hotel said, “It was a pleasure for us to host the Under 21 team here at the hotel. All the boys were very polite and well behaved and the staff really enjoyed looking after them and their entourage. During the week the team seemed to feel very much at home and relaxed here which is a compliment to us and a sign that we are doing our job well.”
Lady Captain’s Charity Presentation The Brendan Oakes Trust was the charity chosen, by Lesley Garnett, as this year’s Lady Captain at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. Lesley, a former teacher at Hadleigh High School, is a trustee of the charity with Val and Mark Oakes, Brendan’s parents. The main fund raising events have been a sponsored walk around the Gainsborough course, a Garden Party and Afternoon Teas arranged by Teresa Porter in her home at Polstead. The Golf Club has also supported the fund raising with the Drive In, Charity Day, Captain-Pro matches and a Harvest Bring and Win Competition among many other activities. At the Captain’s Dinner, which brings the golfing year to an end, Lesley presented a cheque for £3750 to Val and Mark. This small, local charity ensures that money is readily available to any teenage victim of cancer. Thanks were also given to Barclays Bank for their support.

Newton Ladies Bowl Over Men Possession of a miniature toilet bowl trophy has become so intense a full compliment of 72 men and women lined up to compete for the porcelain prize at Newton Green Golf Club. Each year the women of the club challenge the seniors to compete for the trophy, when there are normally about 20 players from each side. However, this year there were 36 ladies and the same number of men from the senior section lining up to do battle, and seniors’ section captain Peter Webb reluctantly had to hand the tiny water closet to ladies’ captain Jill Symonds after her team were flushed with a victory by 11.5 to 6.5 holes. Closest to the hole winners during the day were: 2nd Mick Barlow, 6th Jill Freeman, 11th Paddy Lockwood, 13th Odette Ford, 16th Steve Cragg and Steve Street, 18th Peter Webb.
A huge thank you from Xanthe Carter On behalf of Xanthe, we wanted to be able to say a huge thank you to Mat Blacoe for his amazing marathon running and fundraising for our daughter Xanthe. His offer to run the Montane 'Lakeland 50' for Xanthe earlier this year, was amazingly generous and kind but we hadn't realised that he would be taking on an ultra marathon by night, ploughing up and down hills by head torch and notching up 50 miles along the way! We also wanted to say a big thank you to his wife Debs and to all their friends and colleagues who have been so kind to sponsor Mat to raise money for Xanthe's ongoing therapy needs. These are significant after she contracted pneaumococcal meningitis and had a stroke as a baby. The £1500 raised is an increadible amount and testiment to the generourousity of their friends and family. We will spend the money carefully on additional 1:1 sessions of Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy in the future for Xanthe. With many thanks again, Hugo and Jess Carter
