Kathy Stapleton and Fiona Crabtree of Bildeston have completed their charity bike ride across Northern India in aid of Women v Cancer. Despite noon day temperatures of between 30C and 40C, roads varying from potholed tarmac to rock strewn dirt tracks, numerous holy cows, goats, camels, dogs and children, and four nights camping the task was completed, and what an amazing experience it was. Not having cycled since children until March this year made 350kms seemed a massive task in 5 days, but the huge support they received in sponsorship from family, friends, customers, and the local community meant not achieving it was never a consideration. “When we signed up for it we did not realise the support we would get, and £18,000 means we were the top fund raisers in our group of 106 ladies, who all completed the ride. The total for our group was £360,000 and for the 3 groups £880,000. This experience has not only shown us what any of us can achieve if we set our minds to it, but how generous people can be, even total strangers. And for that we thank you. Your sponsorship makes such a difference to those touched by cancer. So, when you feel you need a challenge, try something completely different. We are both in our 50s and we did it. The sense of achievement is huge, the experience amazing, and life is too short!”

Thank you Crippie! Richard Crisp has organised the deliveries of the Community News magazines for us for many, many years, during which time he has delivered literally hundreds of thousands of copies of this magazine to homes and businesses in Hadleigh and the surrounding area whatever the weather. With the total weight of the magazines exceeding two tonnes each month, he has decided his poor old back can take no more! Unfortunately for us Richard has decided to take it easy and hand back his van keys to enjoy a more relaxing retirement. Richard has been absolutely 100% reliable in all that time and his never ending tales of local folk will be greatly missed by all the Community News team. Although it has been noticed that since he told us he was retiring he’s actually been in to work everyday to pass on all his delivery secrets to his young apprentice Rob. Richard, as a thank you I’ve organised a whip round and got you a lifetime’s subscription to your favourite magazine! Kelvin

If you go down to the woods today…

LOCALLY GROWN CHRISTMAS TREES COME AND CHOOSE YOUR OWN WHILE STILL GROWING. NORWAY SPRUCE & SERBIAN SPRUCE Richard & Ineke Morris. Mill Green Cottage, Edwardstone, Near Sudbury CO10 5PX

Tel. 01787 210761

……… you’re in for a big surprise – that is, if you go down to a very special wood nestled in the Suffolk countryside close to the village of Boxford. At this time of year, as Christmas approaches, this particular corner of Suffolk becomes an extra special destination for local families on a very important treasure hunt. This unique local business offers the chance for all, including the family pet, to search amongst the collection of over 5000 Christmas trees to track down that special one! Unlike the trees stacked high in the local nurseries and garden centres, those at the Edwardstone Christmas Tree plantation are cut on demand – you can even take on the role of lumberjack and fell your own! Or go along and reserve your tree in early December for collection closer to the big day. Richard and Ineke Morris, who started the business almost by chance in 1998, look forward to welcoming back familiar faces year after year and sharing the feelings of anticipation and excitement as the hunt begins. There are two varieties to choose from; the unmistakable scent of the traditional Norway Spruce, at £3 per foot or the Serbian Spruce with its dramatic silvery silhouette, at £4 per foot. With trees from 2ft to 25ft there is the ideal tree to compliment any festive display. Edwardstone Christmas Trees will open on Saturday 1st December and will be open every day from 10.30 -15.30 right up until Christmas Eve. Join them for a fun family day out. Richard & Ineke Morris, Mill Green Cottage, Edwardstone, Near Sudbury CO10 5PX. Tel. 01787 210761

The Steven Henly Award for Outstanding Commitment Back in the Summer, we reported in the HCN and Village Edition that Zahra would be running her first-ever marathon, taking part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon at the end of September; a monster challenge if ever there was one! Well, many congratulations to Zahra, because she managed to complete the course in a little over 6 hours 10 mins. It took her about 3 days after that to be able to walk properly again. Once again, we have had terrific support from the people of Hadleigh. As well as a considerable amount of individual contributions, our fundraising was boosted by a wonderful donation arising from Cllr Penny Cook’s period of office as Mayor. Our sincere gratitude for all your hard work, Penny, we really appreciate your donation. We also had a considerable donation from the Hadleigh Thrift Shop, many thanks to Barbara Boyd. We know how tremendously busy you have been in recent times, so that makes your contribution this year even more special. In total, we have raised around £1,200 for the Steven Henly Fund this year, so huge thanks to everyone who has contributed. If there is anybody who remembers Steven or knows Zahra (you’ve probably seen her on her horse around town) who has not yet been able to contribute, it isn’t too late. Please call Zahra and Bob on 01473 827960 if you would like to help us raise even more. Thank you everybody, all for your help, Zahra and Bob Henly

Bildeston History Quarterly With four extra pages at no extra cost, Issue 5 sees the first anniversary of the launch of Bildeston’s own history magazine. As a hobby, I am pleased to say that during the past year sales have just covered the costs of production and I would like to thank Nick Amor, Mike Browne, Jane Fletcher, Roger Kennell and Pat Whymark for their various contributions. I also need to mention the staff at Keith Avis Printers who put the magazine together from my suggested layouts. Turning to Issue 5, an article on Bildeston’s market and fairs considers the reason why the village is gathered around Market Place and not still sited around the parish church. Many residents will remember the old school situated between Chapel Street and Duke Street, which was erected in 1853, but its predecessor was at Old School House in Chapel Street, founded in 1595. The three series continue. The divorce of William and Ann Parr is the subject of ‘Lords of the Manor’, a very unusual occurrence for the time; ‘Hidden Histories’ looks at Nos.68 and 70 High Street; and the map featured is dated 1884. There are other items of Bildeston interest and some mystery photographs for you to identify. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 5 (Winter 2012-2013) is out now priced £3. Available at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer and Keith Avis Newsagent in Hadleigh. Sue Andrews

In 1780 the way the poor of the Cosford district was looked after was transformed. Prior to this each parish was responsible for the care and well being of its own poor, with many parishes adopting a parish workhouse as one of the ways of providing this assistance. For many this proved too costly a venture. In 1779 a group of local dignitaries including rectors, farmers, landed gentry and other property owners and occupiers applied to Parliament for a local Act to allow them to set up an incorporation for the purpose of maintaining their poor. One of the key elements of these incorporations was the construction of purposely designed workhouses, capable of containing up to 600 inmates. Following a successful application to Parliament the Cosford incorporation was formed. It covered the 17 parishes in the Cosford hundred, except for Hadleigh, with Polstead from neighbouring Babergh. The relevant Act of Parliament instructed the Directors and Guardians to construct a workhouse within three years. 14 acres of land was identified and purchased from Revd. Thomas Caske for £408 for the purpose of building the workhouse. Plans were drawn up by Thomas Corder of Long Melford, for a building designed to hold up to 500 inmates though it rarely if ever exceeded being half full. In July 1793 there were 27 men, 42 women, 22 teenagers and 74 children. A meeting took place at the Kings Head, Bildeston on 21st Jan 1780 where proposals were invited for the construction of the workhouse. Isaac Strutt of Boxford won the contract worth £2751. Additional work included building a laundry, an isolation hospital, and a small church. There were several acres of garden for the employment of the inmates to supply provisions for the house. The main building was three stories high with four wings and a number of cellars underneath. The front wing was occupied by the workhouse master, and his staff. Initially there were two open air courts surrounded by walls ten foot high and 18 inches thick, where inmates could exercise and get fresh air. After 1834 this was increased to four sections in order to separate males from females as well as adults from children. The men and boys were housed one side of the building, the women and children on the other. In the early years the main form of work carried out by the inmates was the preparing and spinning of yarn sold to the Norwich weaving factories to help fund the incorporation. This proved such a financial success, loans which had been taken out to cover the cost of the acquisition and construction had been virtually paid off by 1794. In July 1813 the directors and guardians were summoned to a meeting for the purpose of appointing a school master for the education of the paupers in the house of industry on the principles of Dr Bell’s system. Immediate application was to be made to the school at Bury or Ipswich for the purpose of procuring a proper person to fill the office of school master. While the original build at Semer included a hospital, a second one was constructed in 1869, with the original one being used mainly as a pest house or holding ward for infectious diseases such as small pox. The numbers had been kept under control by a successful vaccination program. By this time the incorporation had been superseded by the Cosford Union, now expanded to include a number of parishes from the eastern side of Babergh hundred. In total, 19 such unions now covered the whole of Suffolk. A Poor Law Commission was set up to manage and oversee the unions. These new unions proved contentious, resulting in riots and unruly behaviour which became a major issue for the directors and acting guardians whose role it was to implement the rule of the poor law commissioners. At Cosford the rioting local poor caused tremendous damage to the building. Police were drafted in to combat the unrest. Stables were erected at Cavalry Meadow presumably for the army should they be needed, though it is not recorded if any came. As time went by the workhouse became a ‘soup kitchen’ for vagrants and tramps. They were given a bed for the night and a hearty breakfast in return for carrying out basic work. This included picking and preparing oakum for ropes or shipping, or breaking stones for the highways and byways. The building was used for German prisoners during the First World War. As the whole concept of the workhouse became out-dated, the Cosford union attempted to sell off the workhouse. Advertisements placed in newspapers in Liverpool, Newcastle and Yorkshire in 1921 unsurprisingly, failed to find a buyer. The workhouse closed in 1923, the few remaining inmates being transferred to the Samford union house at Tattingstone. The Semer building was sold to Mr Freddie Martin, an Ipswich man. He then pulled it down in 1926, and sold off the materials. The burial grounds sited to the west of the main building remains, with a few of the gravestones highlighting the location. Two of the out-buildings were also saved, the new hospital and the master’s house. Both are now substantial properties and remain as a reminder of the efforts of our ancestors to combat the eternal problem of what to do with our poor. Ray Whitehand

Hadleigh U3A Clarice Cliff, a name with which we are all familiar, was the subject of our meeting in November. It was an extremely interesting and informative talk, given by Robin Stone. We were taken though her life from early childhood in the slums of Stoke on Trent to her final days in her beautiful home of Chetwynd House where she died at the age of 73. Clarice Cliff started work at the age of 13. She had no formal training but an innate gift in design and the sense of colour. She ultimately became world famous for her Art Deco designs in ceramics, her work now being highly collectable and fetching unbelievable high prices at auction. We were also extremely fortunate that Mr. Stone brought to show us a number of her pieces. All were valuable but some exceedingly so. To be able to handle these and inspect them at close quarters was indeed a privilege. As always at our U3A meetings we learned and we enjoyed an insight into another world of interest. On Dec. 5th we will be having our Christmas Lunch at the Old Town Hall, and at our next monthly meeting, on December 10th, our guest speaker will be Simon Gilbert, his subject being “A Christmas Theme” The final event of the year will take a coach party of members to the Christmas Spectacular at Thursford, on Dec. 14th. For further information about our Group, please contact Membership Secretary John Daniels, tel.01473 828244, or visit our website at u3asites.org.uk

Waterfield House Residential Home Remembers Howard with the muscles at Hadleigh Car Wash

It was on the 11th November 1918 at 11.00am that the armistice was signed between the allies and Germany to mark the end of hostilities of World War 1. King George V then dedicated November 11th as a memorial day to remember all the members of our armed forces that have lost their lives during conflicts. On Monday 12th November Waterfield House Residential Home held a service to remember the fallen this was kindly conducted by Major Burley the padre from Wattisham airfield along with Jackie Cork of St Marys. The service consisted of the two famous poems the first “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae which was written during the First World War, the second “For the Fallen” written by Laurence Binyon. The last post, silence and reveille then took place at 1100am, in which we remembered all of our brave service men and women who have sacrificed their lives during war and thanked them for helping to provide a future for us and generations to come. Waterfield House would like to thank everyone who was able to attend including members from the Rotary Club, the WI, SSAFA and the Salvation Army. A big thanks to Major Burley and Jackie Cork for providing the home with a truly wonderful service, and a special thank you to the lovely Lisa from the Hive at Wattisham who helped in making the service extra special for the residents by organising for a few current service men and women from the local airbase at Wattisham to attend.

Oh do gather round. What a difference the newly re-furbished Erben Building has made as one enters Hadleigh just above the petrol station. I was arriving back from a toga party one evening and I asked Frank to bring the motor car to a halt so that I could admire the subtle but classy lighting. The façade is lit by floor on the horizontal. I congratulate H Erben upon a job well done and having got rid of the dire 1960s exterior that was there. Erben’s line of business is bottle tops, jars and bottles of one description and another. I know that my readers think that all I do is visit coffee shops and restaurants but there in the Erben building is another called Daily Grind. You can partake in coffees, breakfasts, sandwiches, wraps and paninis with 25 fillings available. It is there for the taking and so why not pay a visit. I expect you are wondering why I should be pictured with a lot of young men with microfibres. Well that happens to be Adam and his slaves at the new car wash in Hadleigh on the industrial estate near Jayrest and next Eurospeed. (Tel. 01473 828431). You could pop there after you have had coffee at Erben. I have to speak as I find; they did an excellent job on one of my vehicles before a relief chauffeur whizzed me off to a glitzy party at Haberdashers Hall in the City for 75 years of Solicitors Kingsley Napley where I was formerly a partner. So treat your vehicles to a spit and polish or even a full valet and however humble they will become grand. I had a great treat when I went to see the new James Bond film, Skyfall on the IMAX screen in Ipswich. Excitement from start to finish. My mother recently sprung a leak. A copper pipe had pierced and water was running down the wall from upstairs and on a Saturday. Our trusty local plumber Gary Girling was there in a flash. If you have trouble with your plumbing then call Gary on 07887 551150. A recent property transaction caused me to deal with a firm of conveyancers run as a call centre. It was stressful for me as well as their clients. I was regularly placed “on hold” for 15 minutes. Do take advantage of the personal service that we can offer and the 27 years of experience amassed all at a reasonable fee. Give me a call to discuss a transaction that you have in mind. In case there is a sixpence in your Christmas pudding you had better make a will too! Happy Christmas. Howard Gibbons

Where have all the Fieldfare and Redwing flocks gone to? The only flock of note was 73 flying SW over my garden on 25th October. Apart from this flock of Fieldfare, I have only seen small groups of just a few birds. I saw 15 Redwings on 18th October then the odd bird here and there. There was a Ringed Ouzel with Blackbirds in a hedgerow near Aldham church on 21st October. A flock of 81 Lapwings were flying Nice photo of a Jay photographed by west over Wolves Lane on the 27th. Sam Mitchell in his Hadleigh Garden Out of my local patch at Alton Water in Tattingstone a report of a Red-breasted Flycatcher early morning on the 28th October. No one saw the bird again that day but we did see a Slavonian Grebe and a Red-Crested Pochard on the water. While we were there news broke of the female Desert Wheatear at Abberton Reservoir in Essex. As the time was against us it was too late to go for that rare Wheatear. I have seen a Desert Wheatear before, one at Landguard point 21st & 23rd October 1987, which was a first year male, and the first one to be seen in Suffolk. The bird was trapped on the 23rd October 1987 and the biometrics taken and a ring fitted on its leg. The bird moved on away from Landguard during the night of the 24th. Remarkably this bird was located 402 km south from Landguard at Prawle Point, Devon the next day. The ring number confirmed that this was the Landguard Desert Wheatear. There was another Desert Wheatear that I saw at Easton Bavents, NE Suffolk some years later. Back in the local patch at Giffords Park, 11th November 300+ Black Tailed Godwits, 200+ Lapwings, 400+ Wigeon, 240+ Teal, 9 Pintails, several Shoveler, Gadwall, Pochard, Green Sandpiper, 1 Spooted Redshank and Little Egrets. There was also a flock of Bramblings, 60+, at Withermarsh Green on 11th November. As always if you see anything interesting please get in touch! jerry@keithavis.co.uk

Winter Driving Tips from QED With winter now upon us, we need to check that vehicles are in a roadworthy condition and prepared for adverse conditions. At QED we always do a prewinter check ensuring that the car has adequate antifreeze in the radiator, the tyres are in good condition, correctly inflated and have at least 3mm of tread; and that the wipers work effectively and the correct screen wash for use at colder temperatures is in place. We also make sure we have a scraper, deicer spray, torch, spare bulbs, first aid kit and hi-visibility clothing in the car. A good tip for the hi-visibility clothing is to keep it in the passenger part of the vehicle so you don’t get cold getting out of the car to put it on. When planning winter trips ask yourself a number of questions, is the journey essential? Is there a safer way of getting the job done – could you order in the groceries to save a trip out; could you make a phone call instead of travelling to a meeting? If you do have to travel is there a safer way – how about a bus? If the buses can’t run is it really safe for you to drive? Would it be safer to leave an hour later when the ice has had chance to melt? If you decide that you do have to travel and bad weather is forecast make sure your vehicle is in good condition and you have more than enough fuel for the journey, consider carrying the following in the car, just in case the worse happens and you get stuck. Additional warm clothing (in the passenger section) including a hat, 2 pairs of gloves and socks so if one pair gets wet you can change into dry ones, waterproof footwear – wellies are good but not ideal to drive in, a thermos of a warm drink or hot water and cup-a-soup to make, emergency food, spare water, blankets, dustpan and brush to use as a snow shovel and clean snow of the car and a fully charged mobile phone. Always let others know where you are going, the route you are taking and when you anticipate arriving. Finally it is also the season of colds, flu and virus’s, which can all adversely affect your ability to make judgments as can both prescribed and over the counter medicine. If you are not well or taking medicines that may affect your ability to drive/ use machinery/ cause drowsiness then consider how essential it is to drive, better to stay at home then end up in a ditch or worse. Safe driving and a happy festive season from Rob and Judy at QED We can be contacted on 01473 824092 or info@qeddriving.co.uk

Double congratulations due to Matt and Keith Avis Printers Matt Barber has been presented with HM The Queen’s Long Service and Good Conduct Medal at the recent Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Awards Ceremony. Matt comes from a long line of fire-fighters but admits that it never really crossed his mind to join until his Aunt told him it was about time that he did. At the beginning of his career he served with two uncles, both Leading Firefighters at the time, who went on to complete in excess of thirty years service each. Matt’s grandfather also served at Hadleigh. Matt is a rare employee who has provided full cover for the entire time with the Service. When he joined the Fire Service, he worked at a factory manufacturing tarpaulins and marquees a short five hundred yard sprint from the old station. When the factory relocated he found a job at Keith Avis Printers in the High Street, knocking a full one hundred yards off his dash to answer a call. In 1998 Matt was promoted to Leading Firefighter and then Sub Officer in 2001. Matt has attended a wide range of incidents throughout his career. Memorable ones include his first shout, a ten pump thatch fire, the Buttermarket fire in Ipswich, one of the twenty five pump fires in Bury and even a plane crash. Away from work, Matt’s time is taken up entertaining his three and five Matt receives award from Andy Fry, year old sons. Other activities Chief Fire Officer include running and playing golf. At the same awards ceremony his employers, Keith Avis Printers, were presented with a Gold ‘On-Call Employer Award’ which is presented to employers that have demonstrated excellent support to the Fire Service On Call duty system, in their case by allowing Matt, who is the Print Production Manager, to leave work at a moments notice and attend fires for over 15 years.

By the time you are reading this we will have completed our Chocolate Bingo event in November which, at the time of writing is set to be another success as we are almost sold out of tickets. It is great to see not only our regular supporters but more and more new faces who have been told about this event by their friends and family. It is doubly important that funding is boosted with the recent government decision to withdraw free entry visas for Chernobyl Children brought to the UK, meaning we have to find/initiate more monies to cover this tragic decision. Here's hoping that we can not only maintain, but increase support, for the charity from now to when next years visit is due in July. Remember, in our Charity Shop in Coddenham Road we take or can collect clean old clothing, curtains, sheets + the like, also non saleable books, which adds to charity funds via recycling collection agency. Good saleable books are of course sold in our shop as are children’s toys and an excellent range of baby clothes and other related items. With the Christmas season fast approaching it is well worth remembering that we always have a good selection of party wear in the shop and also facilities to try clothing on before purchasing. We recently made a request for people to send a Shoe box to each of the children that came in the summer 2012 visit or who are supported directly by this Link and we are delighted that the response means that each child will now receive an unexpected but very welcome present from England. The usual present at Christmas for these children is a packet of sweets. Although the sender will be bearing the cost of sending the items they do know exactly who the present is going to and receive details of the child, their family and photographs. A very big thank you to everyone who has taken part in this part of our program. Most of our Hosts are now in place for the 2013 visit but we do have a vacancy for one more Host to complete the group. Hosts can be of any age, the main requirement is somewhere to sleep and a welcoming home environment. Hosts are able to work or follow their own interests as during the working week the children all attend our day centre based at Needham Market Football Club. If you think you may be interested in offering a home to a child/ren please either call or email me. With grateful thanks as always to all of our supporters. Combat Rising Energy Bills

Like me, you probably recently received a letter from your energy supplier telling you that they are putting up their prices. This unwelcome news comes as we enter the cold winter months and inevitably have to notch up the thermostat. At a time when we are all tightening our belts, rising energy bills is the last thing that we need.

The current average annual household energy bill is £1,250, nearly double what they were five years ago – but OFGEM is forecasting that wholesale gas and electricity prices will rise by 13 per cent next year, adding £161 to the family’s average bill. Longer term prices are only going one way, UP.

It’s not all bad news. There are things that you can do to combat rising energy prices and here are Energy on Tap’s top tips for reducing your energy bills:

¥ Believe it or not, only 40% of the energy used in your home i used by you the consumer. So start by simply switching off unwan lighting or appliances.

¥ Lighting uses a huge amount of energy and if you can?t it swi then at least install low energy lights. These do cost more than the ol style, but they last much longer and make a big impact on you use.

¥ Installing cavity wall and loft insulation can slash 20% off your annua heating bill. There are Government initiatives to install in homes free of charge. For more information go to www.direct.gov.uk/savingenergy or call 0300 123 1234 ¥ Use energy saving appliances. The Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge The Choir is to perform a Christmas concert at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh, Suffolk on Saturday 15th December 2012 at 6.30pm.

The Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge will return to Hadleigh in Suffolk, a parish with which the College has a long-standing association, to sing a Concert of Christmas music, ranging from heart-warming festive favourites to more rarely performed seasonal works. The 350-year-old Choir of St John’s College Cambridge will perform under its director Andrew Nethsingha and with organ scholars, Freddie James and Edward Picton-Turbervill. Having enjoyed highly successful recent foreign tours, the Choir is looking forward to performing again in Hadleigh. St John’s College, Cambridge was founded in 1511 and its Choir, now recognised as one of the world’s finest collegiate choirs, has participated in Evensong, Sung Eucharist and Sunday-morning services at the College since the 1670s. Among its more recent alumni is Simon Keenlyside, one of the world’s leading operatic baritones. The ensemble has become renowned for its brilliant and vigorous ‘continental sound’, unique among English choirs of its kind. Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Ghanaian Visitors We were delighted to welcome 2 visiting teachers from Ghana to our a few weeks ago. Ankrah Baffour Baafi and Sumaila Salifu teach at Adebeyee Junior High School in Ghana. The aim of our partnership with this Ghanaian school is to share views about learning and teaching as well as develop strong links between pupils in both schools through undertaking joint projects and experiences whilst learning about each other's lives. Like Hadleigh, Adebeyee Junior High School is located in a rural location in the KEEA District on Ghana's Southern coast. This partnership has been set up with the support of the Partner Ghana Trust a grass roots charity working with schools in the UK and Ghana to facilitate long term relationships between partner schools, which foster greater cultural awareness and understanding in both communities. It is anticipated that pupils will share aspects of their culture and tradition as well as comparing life experiences. In the first instance contact will be made through forming pen pal and video links, shared projects, themed assemblies and lessons. Some of our staff will be visiting Adebeyee Junior High during the spring half term to generate curriculum projects which can be shared across both school. It is then hoped Partner Ghana will be able to support our pupils in fundraising activities to enable some of our students to visit pupils in Ghana. Our visiting teachers spent time in lessons at Hadleigh as well as visiting a morning learning session at St. Mary's Primary School and Bildeston Primary School where they were able to share details of what it is like to be a young person in Ghana. This opportunity has allowed our pupils to consider Ghanaian culture as well as global issues which affect both us and our Ghanaian partners. Our visitors were very impressed by the courtesy and politeness of our pupils as well as the capacity they possess to discuss their learning. Cross Country at RHS A number of selected students took part in a cross country race, at the Royal Hospital School, on 18th October, 2012. 26 Students secured themselves a place in top 50, so now have a chance to run in the 2nd Suffolk Cross Country Trials. This 2nd round will take place on Saturday 1st December 2012. The Students that have been asked to run in the 2nd round are: Minor Girls (Yr7) – Isobel Chaplin 39th, Bethany Hanson 44th, and Nadia Johnson 46th Minor Boys (Yr7) – Felix Vardon Barber 22nd, George Grigg-Pettitt 27th, Joel Cooper 32nd, Ross McCallion 35th, Dan Squirrell 42nd, and Domonic Morley 46th Junior Girls (Yr 8 & 9) – Esther Gray 49th Junior Boys (Yr 8 & 9) – Alex Baxter 2nd, Oliver Peters 20th, Jackson Crisp 21st, Tommy Thorby 28th and Jordan Aris 33rd Inter Girls (yr 10 & 11) – Jasmine Hayward 3rd,Ruby Shepperson 22nd, Rachael White 23rd, Jeanie Hackman 33rd, Miriam Jacobs 40th, and Amy Pettitt 42nd Inter Boys (Yr 10 & 11) – Tom Cowley 17th, Cal Dawson 25th, Daniel Storrer 31st, Anthony Pearce 39th, and Cailen Daley 49th The team results have also been received, and are as follows: Junior Boys and Inter Girls both finished 2nd and the Minor Boys and Inter Boys finished 5th. Congratulations to all the students that participated. Othello Earlier this month a select group of students in Year 11 performed Shakespeare’s great tragedy ‘Othe llo’ at Jerwood Dance House in Ipswich. The production went without a hitch, with some impressive performances being given. DofE – Year 10 put through their paces During half term a number of Year 10’s who are participating in the Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh award scheme went on their first practice expedition. The expedition, which took place on the 29th and 30th of October, required the students to walk 25 kilometres over the two days. The students had an early start, leaving school at 7.15 am on the first day, consequently beginning walking by 8.15. Although the weather was cold, it was dry, and by the end of the day both groups had around 12 or 13 kilometres under their belts, despite one particular group walking considerably more than they were required to! The first group to arrive set up their tents and began cooking as soon as they arrived at the campsite, although as the clocks had gone back a few days previously, it was almost dark by the time they began to eat. The second day’s walking went well although it was wet underfoot, and both groups successfully completed the distance required. This was the first of two practice expeditions, the other one being in April. After both groups have completed their practice walks there will be one qualifying expedition in the summer which is an obligatory part of the course. The students participating in this award scheme will also have to participate in community service and physical recreation as well as completing a ‘skills’ section of the course. Enrichment Day On the 23rd of November the whole school participated in Enrichment Day. The normal timetable was collapsed, offering new activities to pupils to help further their learning. 22

Half of Year 7 went out of school to Hedingham Castle whilst the other half took part in a Maths ‘Interior Design’ day. Half of Year 8 went on a tour of the Globe theatre in London, whilst the remaining students participated in a ‘Young Apprentice’ style activity which developed their knowledge of Shakespeare, his plays and The Globe theatre. Year 9 did a PSHE day, to help further their knowledge of money handling and the ‘real world’. Year 10 had many options for enrichment; each student was able to choose an option that they felt might help themselves in their GCSE courses. These options were: a PE trip to Essex University; a Music day focusing on performance skills and techniques; an Art trip to the Tate Modern and the V&A; a Geography London Walking Tour; an ICT Java Script day; a Design and Technology day; a Thorpe Woodlands Adventure day; a ‘Dragons Den’ day in Food Technology and finally a trip to the University of East Anglia. Library News On November 15th we welcomed Marcus Alexander, author of the ‘Keeper of the Realms’ series to the school. Year 7 & 8 were treated to an exciting presentation as part of the school ethos to promote literacy and reading for pleasure. Markus has a background in extreme sports and the pupils were interested in his travels abroad to peruse activities such as free running, Thai boxing, sand boarding, snowboarding and climbing glaciers. Selected pupils from both year groups attended a creative writing workshop run by Marcus in the afternoon. This gave the pupils a unique opportunity to explore the worlds of fantasy writing through literacy skills and finding inspiration by exploring sources of imagination. Year 7 pupils received their new books this term from Book buzz –the national reading programme encouraging reading for pleasure, independent choice and a whole school reading culture. We hope that the pupils enjoy their books and that by receiving them they are encouraged to continue on their reading journeys. Titles include: Shadow Forrest by Matt Haig and A Most Improper Magick by Stephanie Burgis. Year 10 Geography field trip: 7 Students from the current Year 10 are helping to organise a Geography field trip that will be taking place in May. This trip will be to the Peak District, where a number of the case studies the students will be required to cover are based. Students will have a chance to visit tourist towns, as well as participate in a number of activities, such as touring the caves. The students who have been allocated a place on this trip should have received a letter asking for the deposit, which needs to be handed in as soon as possible. The Year 10s organising this trip have done a great deal of research and are still planning things to allow this trip to run as smoothly as possible. Thank you to Rhys Linge, Josh Dewes, Evan White, Ellenor Norman, Harriette Dulake, Rachael White and Violet Daniels. French Pen Pals Year 10 students have begun to exchange letters with pupils from schools in France, so as to enhance their understanding of the French language and to improve their vocabulary. Ms Sibley’s Year 10 and 11 pupils have been corresponding with pupils from a school in Arras, whilst Ms Starlings Year 10s are currently exchanging them with pupils in a school in Paris. Year 11 students have already been exchanging letters with French pupils in the previous year which has greatly aided their understanding, learning and knowledge. Year 9 Netball Tournament Well done to our Year 9 Netball team who recently participated in a tournament held at Hadleigh High School. There were eight teams in total and we managed to secure ourselves a very respectable sixth position. We beat both Northgate and Copleston High School and improved greatly as the competition progressed. A special well done goes to Ellen Seeley who was awarded ‘player of the match’ and most improved player was Maia Bates; they both played extremely well. Also a thank you to the Year 10s who assisted in the running of this tournament: Hannah Daniels, Holly Shanks and Ellenor Norman. Singing for a good cause On the 27th October, several members of the choir took part in a concert to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. We were originally invited to perform backing vocals for a gospel choir based in London. However, the workshop leaders were so impressed with our pupils and how quickly they picked things up that we were invited to sing two additional songs on our own! The choir performed Oh Happy Day, Lean on Me and Read All About It. Everybody agreed that we were a highlight of the concert. Thank you to the following pupils for their excellent contributions to a wonderful concert, all to support a very good cause: Olivia Simmons, Tia Ambrose-Francis, Ebony Brooke-Rivers, Jess Simmons, Catherine Funnell, Liara DeBanks, Emma Sargent, Abi Simpson, Madeleine Potter, Jasmine Orriss, Rebekah Asquith, Chloe Snowling, Beth Garrity, Beth Clements, Faith Plummer, Jeanie Hackman, Miriam Jacobs, Emily Kitchen and Cecily White.

Perfection at Fleur Nails and Beauty is Flourishing! Award winning local business woman Olga Spitters, is very proud to be expanding her flourishing business, by opening a brand new salon in Hadleigh High Street on 3rd November. The owner of the well reputed Fleur Nails and Beauty already has an established salon in the heart of Dedham, on the Essex/Suffolk border, which she has made a success since April 2009. The reputation of Fleur Nails & Beauty is built on nothing short of perfection. Olga’s extremely high standards are well known by her clients and staff alike, and she and her staff accept nothing but the best in their work. Their passion is to make people happy through the quality of their work. This is evident through the awards which Olga has won, totaling over 14 achievements of trophies and awards since she started competing in 2005. Her most recent award came earlier this year in March at The Professional Beauty Exhibition held at London’s ExCel centre, where she scooped 1st & 3rd prize in the ‘Classic Nail Photography’ class against national and international competition. Her perfection is evident, when you admire the range of trophies and awards this formidable therapist has achieved in categories ranging from nail art, to themed photography and model work, to gel nails and classic nails. Russian born Olga credits her success to two people. Her mother instilled a good work ethic in her from an early age, never ceasing to work hard with very high standards. Her motto was “either do a job well, or not at all!” Her husband Kees, is the other dynamic half of the team, supporting Olga in every aspect of running the business, from managing the accounts, helping to fit, decorate and furnish the new salon and keep workaholic Olga on the straight and narrow. “He tells me when to stop” said Olga, who otherwise is likely to just keep on working! Olga decided on Hadleigh for the new salon, as she felt she wanted to offer her clients the opportunity of a local, professional and friendly experience, without the necessity of traveling into town. “Parking is easy and we can offer clients more local to Hadleigh an intimate and dedicated service” said Olga. The new salon is a light, spacious and relaxing environment, decorated in the ‘Fleur’ trademark purples and lilac. A larger waiting area, where clients can both wait for treatments or relax and allow their nails to dry; a second room for more privacy and peace for other treatments such as massage and waxing and more than two nail specific treatment areas to allow greater flexibility for clients, all contribute towards the fantastic new facilities. Fleur Nails and Beauty use products from Beauty Concepts International, who supply both salons with the high quality LCN nail products and the Biodroga Institut body products. Olga rightly has high standards to maintain. She was fed up with poor industry standards so decided to train as an exclusive personal trainer for LCN in the East Anglia region, and now her reputation goes before her. She is often required to travel to London or around the region to train beauticians in her arts on behalf of the supplier, and is spreading her perfection far and wide. Fleur Nails & Beauty is at 4A High Street in Hadleigh You can book appointments for: • Nails, including Recolution Gel Polish, Nail Varnish, Nail Extensions, Hard Gel & Fibre Glass. Therapists will also offer advice on treatment and aftercare and offer a nail repair service on single nails • Facials • Indian Head Massage • Body Treatments, including massage and body wraps • Eye Treatments • Waxing • Spray Tanning using Xen-Tan The salon is taking bookings and the team is likely to be busy for the run-up to Christmas, but clients should have no fear, as the service they receive from Fleur Nails & Beauty, will be nothing short of perfect! HIGHCLIFF VETERINARY PRACTICE

E

We are a long established, reputable small animal practice with four branches; two in Ipswich, one at Brantham, near Manningtree, with the founding surgery at Hadleigh. We have members of our veterinary staff who are developing further expertise in orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery, imaging and other diagnostics, exotic pets, rabbits as well as alternative medicine (herbal and acupuncture).

Whether you have a hamster or a Great Dane, we are here to help!

Keeping your pets sane and safe this Christmas Christmas can be a wonderful time of the year but amidst the glittering chaos sit our pets and, like us, they can be adversely affected by inappropriate presents, over-indulgences, a break in routine and/or increased socialising. With chocolate poisonous in large doses, turkey bones likely to splinter, tree needles problematic if they are eaten or become lodged in paws and holly, poinsettia and mistletoe (amongst others) toxic you could be forgiven for thinking that ‘Christmas’ and ‘Pets’ don’t go together! Of course, fireworks continue throughout Christmas and New Year so we recommend drawing the curtains, introducing some background noise and letting your pet find their own comfort zone until they have passed. We have also seen dramatic improvements in the behaviour of anxious dogs wearing a DAP collar. At this time of year we tend to use anti-freeze in our cars but most of us are unaware of the problems it can cause pets. Unfortunately many animals find the taste of antifreeze very attractive, and ingesting even the smallest amount can lead to kidney failure and death, especially in cats. Please make sure your car is not leaking coolant and clean up any spills immediately. If you have any problems with your pet swallowing something it shouldn’t have, behaving differently or appearing unwell please do not hesitate to contact your vet. On behalf of all our staff we would like to wish all our clients, and readers of this column, a happy and peaceful Christmas and New Year

Hello Everybody, I’m Kenny, the little Chihuahua who was missing from SESAW in August. I am over the moon to be home again and very grateful for all the help you gave me. My friend Penny really missed me while I was away and do you know, they might never have got me back if the vet hadn’t put an identity thing in the back of my neck? Please make sure all your pets are microchipped – being lost is really scary and the vet can easily insert one of these magic things straight away. If you are looking for Christmas present ideas, why not sponsor me, or one of my SESAW friends for your animal loving friends and family? They will receive a Certificate of Sponsorship with a photo and news of me or one of the other dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, geese, foxes, peacocks, owls and lots more. Log onto www.sesaw.co.uk to download a Sponsorship Form or visit us between 10am and 1pm Wednesday to Sunday. Bring the recipient along too, so they can choose which one of us to sponsor. Alternatively, a regular donation can help with the running costs, e.g. £5 a month will heat a kennel throughout the winter. Thank you for supporting SESAW throughout the year and to the ‘Village Edition’ for providing an excellent communication network. Best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year from Kenny, (the Boss), Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP.

Adrian’s Sponsored Ride Update! Adrian Miller would like to thank everyone who sponsored him on his 11.6 mile cycle ride. Adrian raised £449.50 (£332.50 for FUN and £117 for HIP). It’s that time of year again, where the air starts turning frosty, the heating finally gets turned on and we are all thinking of one thing...yes CHRISTMAS! The Hadleigh Christmas Craft and Food Fair was a great start to the shopping season! Once again we had a massive response from our stall holders, with most of the places being filled up months in advance. This year, again, we had to create a ‘reserve list’, as our Christmas Craft and Food Fair has become so well known and places in it well sought after. For those of you who did not come to this year’s fair, that had been held on Sunday 4th November, we booked out all four of the Town Hall Complex’s rooms as well as serving refreshments in the ‘Dining Room’. The fair was well attended by over 500 people, all looking around each of the 50 plus unique craft and food stalls. This year, for the first time, we had not one but two locally produced or homebrewed beer stalls! As well as that, another first this year was a stall of freshly made and beautifully presently bread and other homemade goodies, which included all sorts of speciality breads as well as rural favourites. The fair was also attended by Hadleigh’s own fruit and veg stall – usually seen in Market Place – but had set up especially for us inside the Town hall on that day. With beautifully made cupcakes and delicious cheeses and handmade pies, our Food Hall was brimming with the best that Suffolk could produce. Not only was the Food Hall good but this year our stall holders really excelled themselves with the high quality and standard of their wares. We had such a variety of goods sold from Knit ware, quilts, woodwork to jewellery, soft toys and even wonderfully crafted tutu skirts. It would have been very hard for anyone to resist not spending a small fortune! With all this shopping going on it was a good job there was more than adequate refreshments in the Dining Room, with the aroma of freshly cooked bacon rolls and the sight of mouthwatering cakes, who could resist sitting down and enjoying something to eat and drink as you perused your purchases. Of course none of this would have been possible without the help of the many people involved, so I’d like to say a special Thank You to all the team from the Hadleigh Town Forum and also all the helpers in the kitchen for all their hard work and dedication. All the money raised at the Craft and Food Fairs go towards funding events in the town such as the Christmas Lighting up that will be taking place on Sunday 2nd December from 3pm till 6pm in the Market Place in Hadleigh. This year is going to be extra special with REAL REINDEER on hand with Santa Claus ready to take your Christmas list. We also have a live Nativity scene, live acts and music onstage plus not forgetting the funfair in the Toppesfield Hall car park. We have lots more planned for all ages so make sure you come down and join in the festive fun. Make sure you visit our website to get the timetable of events and also print your own carol sheet ready for the lighting of the tree at 5:30pm. The next Hadleigh Craft and Food Fair will be on Sunday 17th March 2013 so if you would like to be a stall holder for this one please log on to www.Hadleighents.webs.com to download a form and I look forward to seeing you there! A Very Happy Christmas and new year to all Cllr Trevor Clarke, Chairman of the Hadleigh Town Forum

Achieved Your Goals This Year? Suddenly Christmas is around the corner, swiftly followed by the start of another year. Did you achieve your goals - whatever they were - this year? Many people start a new year with a resolution to lose weight and get fit. Was that you in 2012? Did you succeed? If this year has sped by & you’re still saying “diet starts on Monday” then maybe you need some help and inspiration. Look back at this summer’s big event – the Olympics - an amazing achievement for the thousands of people involved – the opening & closing ceremonies as well as the games themselves. These events prove the power of teamwork, of believing in an idea and seeing it through no matter how much others tell you otherwise. Apply this thought to your weight loss journey and you can succeed as our Olympic sportsmen & women did this year. Many people find the weight loss journey a challenge. But it’s also exciting looking forward to change and success – to becoming a slim, healthy, confident & much happier person - ultimately into a new phase of life. The next challenge is keeping to a stable weight, not going back to our old (bad) habits. It’s obvious really but if we return to old habits there’s a fair chance of heading back to the place we started – miserable & overweight once more. When your goal is reached it’s important to recognise your achievement, be proud - and give yourself a medal! It really can be life-changing! Cambridge Weight Plan can help you with all your weight loss goals for 2013 and beyond! If you would like individual help with a weight problem, Val is an accredited Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant and can be contacted on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645 or visit www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL for more information

Hadleigh & District Garden Club William Tyler, historian extraordinaire, gave the Club a truely riveting and very amusing talk on the history of vegetables. Who would have thought that a non-stop dissertation on such a subject could be so interesting and, yes plain funny. I will never think of mangetout in quite the same way again although I did disagree with his consensus of their worth! I am sure my grip of history would have been much greater if we'd had a teacher like Mr Tyler when I was at school I had to leave school to discover its' fascination and no wonder "Horrible Histories" are so popular!! We all At the September meeting the know where the humble spud came Hadleigh and District Flower Club from but did you know it arrived presented a cheque for ÂŁ938.73 to after the more exotic sounding Emma Law of the "Fun" charity that sweet potato - I'm still trying to work provides respite care for people out how they grew it here as it's still with special needs regarded as "difficult". Along with plundering all that gold perhaps Drake was sent back to pick up an easier to grow version of root vegetable! He told us about which vegetables are indigenous and where when and how the others have reached these shores and stressed how crazy it is to import from, literally, the other side of the World, vegetables that are simply seasonal. Do we really need to fly in Brussel sprouts - in August!! Apparently this talk was one of many he gives on a wide variety of subjects and when we strayed on to the subject of fruits, and in particular, plums, he decided he might research them next as he was so insensed that pretty well the only plums available in shops were those awful black bullets that would never ripen and have no flavour and never get juicy. Yes, o.k. it's all to do with shelf life, but, what about those "air miles"? So watch this space. Next month is a QUIZ NIGHT organised by Chris and Phil once more, many thanks both, and do remember we don't meet in January. Happy Christmas and New Year to you all and let's wish for an easier gardening year in 2013. Ruth Allen 822323

Thank You I would just like to thank everyone who came to my party and helped me celebrate my birthday. It was lovely to see lots of old as well as new friends. Thank you to all the "girls" who helped with the food, thanks also to John and Jill Kerry who made the party possible and for all their hardwork in getting The Venue at Kersey Mill looking so beautiful. It is an amazing setting and I wish them success for the future. Lastly thank you to my children Carly and Aidan for making me happy for the last 23 years. Julia Bignell

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts A trip to Kent for other reasons allowed me to call in on the Apple Day at the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale near Faversham towards the end of October. As usual this was a real celebration of the apple with examples of about 200 different varieties on display, ( See picture of one section with about 50 different apples), and a lot of less usual varieties which one could taste or buy plus a variety of relevant side shows. As usual this Summer the event was somewhat spoiled by a large quantity of rain which made strolling around the extensive orchards less than inviting. There were a number of talks on offer, and I went to one on "Pests and Diseases of Fruit Trees", I was slightly surprised when the speaker started by talking about the different stocks that are used for grafting fruit trees to control their size. For apples in gardens they would recommend M27 for a 5-6' tree, M9 for an 8-9' tree and M26 for a 1215' tree. He then said that none of these 3 were satisfactory on heavy clay soils.something that I have not seen anywhere else. So if you are one of the bits of Hadleigh with heavy clay soil, and are planting apples, press your supplier to confirm that the stock he is offering is suitable for heavy clay. I think it explains why one or two of my apple trees are doing less well than I would have expected. I am wondering what will happen to my mature Ash tree next year. I would be very sad to lose it even though weeding out hundreds of Ash seedlings each year is a trifle frustrating. Why in the world were we importing Ash trees ? Weather Records In October at Kersey there were 84.5 mm (3.3”) of rain. This is roughly 60% more than our average monthly rainfall. This rainfall means that the 3 month figure is now 167.8 mm (6.6”) which is 110% of the average rainfall. In October the maximum temperature was 17 Cel (63F) which is at the bottom of the October range. The minimum was 1 Cel (34F), which is slightly lower than average for October. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 7 Cel (45F), which is cooler than the last two years, but still fairly typical for the month. This is roughly the ground temperature at which things like grass stop growing. Hints Many people will be buying plants as presents for people at Christmas. Nurseries will have put a lot of effort into getting plants into excellent condition to sell at this time of year, and when you buy them they will undoubtedly look good, but will they last ? Most of the problems hinge around what happens to the plant after it leaves the nursery where it was grown. There will be journeys from the nursery to the wholesale market, and then from the market to the shop or stall, and then finally from there on to its final destination. The temperatures on these journeys may be wildly different from those in the nursery where it was grown and the plant may not like it. Most at risk are the plants that like it warm, for example the Poinsetta (Euphorbia pulcherima). These are beautiful plants, but they are likely to suffer on an exposed market stall, or if carried around on a cold day without protection. Chrysanthemums, and Azaleas are reasonably tough, and the large flowered cyclamen come somewhere in the middle, but protect all purchased plants from the weather as much as you can. When buying plants look for buds as well as flowers to get a plant that will be enjoyed for a reasonable time Another possibility is to give an Amaryllis bulb perhaps with container. These are very easy to grow indoors and are now available in a wide variety of types and colours. If you have youngsters they can exercise their maths by measuring its height each day, and plotting a graph. Sadly they are not easy to get to flower the following year. We have probably finished with mowers for a bit so why not give it a good clean, and if necessary get it serviced avoiding the rush in the Spring. A Happy Christmas to all my readers and good gardening in 2013. John Rye

The RSPB's annual Big Garden Birdwatch is back on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 January 2013, giving people across the UK the chance to be part of the World's biggest wildlife survey. Closer to home, over this weekend there will be fun, family activities at the RSPB Flatford Wildlife Garden. Almost 600,000 people across the UK took part in Big Garden Birdwatch in 2012 and between them counted more than 9 million birds. To take part, people are asked to spend just one hour at any time over Big Garden Birdwatch weekend noting the highest number of each bird species seen in their gardens or local park at any one time. They then have three weeks to submit their results to the RSPB, either online at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch or in the post. Now in its 34th year, the survey provides the RSPB with an important snapshot of garden bird populations in winter and has helped to highlight some dramatic declines in UK garden birds. In the first survey in 1979, an average of 15 starlings were seen per garden, but that fell to an average of just three starlings per garden in 2012, the lowest level ever. House sparrow numbers have fallen by two thirds over the lifetime of the survey too. Sarah Houghton, RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Manager, said; 'Everyone who takes part in Big Garden Birdwatch is contributing to the World's biggest wildlife survey and helping us learn more about some of our most familiar garden birds. 'The declines of birds like starlings and sparrows over the last 30 years or so have been alarming, but Big Garden Birdwatch has helped us find out more about their numbers and distribution across UK gardens, and that has been the first step in helping to put things right.' Some bird species have fared considerably better over the years. Sightings of popular species like blue tits, great tits and coal tits in gardens have increased since 1979. Goldfinches, which were absent from the Big Garden Birdwatch top 15 in the early years, have featured regularly as a top 15 species since 2004. From Thursday 1 November, 2012 you can register to take part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2013 at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch or call the hotline on 0300 456 8330 to receive a FREE Big Garden Birdwatch pack. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre We are into December and I’m sure many of you are looking forward to the Christmas and New Year. Normally, all of us at The Shelley Centre would be too but, this year, our excitement is tinged with sadness. I’m sorry to write that our lovely Shannon, who has been with us for over eight years, had to be put to sleep recently due to an inoperable condition being found by the Veterinary Surgeons at Newmarket. Shannon was a much loved, gentle old lady and the Herd (Which includes me and BABS) Riders and Volunteer Helpers alike will miss her greatly; in particular, Parys, who has shared a field with her since arriving at Shelley. It was Shannon who first took Parys under her wing and helped her settle into the Shelley routines. I know many of our Riders and Helpers have many good things to say about Shannon but, this is what Ruth had to say, which I feel represents all of our experiences with Shannon. “What a special pony! I will miss her as we go back a long time. The first time that I rode Shannon, not long after she had arrived at Shelley, there was a thunderstorm yet she wasn’t bothered, she continued to look after me well. We were a team at events at Shelley……winning the Countryside Challenge one year because she was the fastest! No mean feat as her normal pace was on the slow side! We also entered dressage classes at the Oaklands Regional Competitions and also at Shelley. She was always willing, kind and looked after all of her very special Riders!” Our Volunteer Helpers enjoyed their annual Helpers Supper which is the only opportunity that they all get to meet and talk without having to dash off to a ride, or groom a horse and tack up……just a relaxing, fun evening at a local Pub; only hope they were all on their best behaviour with me not being there to keep an eye on them and spill the beans? And so, to the close of the year when on 8th December we hold the Shelley Centre Carol Service which, as usual, will be at the Shelley Church. It is a time for everyone to come together, Riders, parents, friends, carers, Helpers to celebrate the spirit of Christmas and what a special event it is but, space is limited so please contact The Centre soon to let us know if you will be attending……there is a promise of Mulled Wine and Cakes before we proceed to the Church for the service so don’t be late! Well, that’s me done for the year: I will now close my door and draw the curtains for my holiday shutdown but, before that, from all of us at The Shelley Centre, thank you for your support and we wish you an enjoyable Christmas and that all of your wishes come true in the New Year……Goodbye until next year! On Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/hadleighhares On Twitter www.twitter.com/hadleighhares84 Online www.hadleighhares.co.uk Sun 4th November 2012: Harwich Cross Country The second leg of the 53-12 Cross Country running league was held in Harwich. These are excellently organised events but are different to most running races. There are no prizes, finishing medals or goodie bags, no changing facilities, timing chips and virtually no spectators, just a simple cross country race against 200 plus runners from Suffolk and Essex. The course follows a five mile route around muddy fields and tracks. At various turns the driving rain made it difficult to see properly and at some points, where the ground was saturated, you thought you were just running into a freezing cold river. It was the girls who put in an outstanding performance. The five strong team all raced well with a stunning debut performance from Penny Grayson finishing in 12th position and a very strong run from Claire O'Neill finishing in 28th. The ever consistent Trudy Avis and Kate Thomas packed well behind Penny and Deb Stewart showed tremendous commitment to the team by offering her club colours to Penny meaning that she would not be in a scoring position herself for Hadleigh. In the men's race Matt Hunter's excellent year continued with his highest placed finish in the cross country league. Hares legend Mat Blacoe is returning to full fitness and showed the magic is still there by finishing in 29th. John Scaife followed up his 3rd position in last week's Salisbury Half Marathon with a top 10 place and Steve Hunt got the better of son Stuart for the first time this year. Not far behind were the smiling and enthusiastic faces of Andrew Stewart and super veteran Mike Rosbrook who always offer their support and experience to the benefit of team spirit. In the junior section Alex Baxter looked comfortable winning the race by some distance with little brother Ewan and Elizabeth Stewart not far behind. All in all a good day for the Hares who now push up to second position overall in Pool B with four races remaining. Ladies' Race: 12th Penny Grayson, 26th Trudy Avis, 28th Claire O'Neill, 35th Kate Thomas, 67th Deb Stewart. Men's Race: 10th John Scaife, 29th Mat Blacoe, 44th Matt Hunter, 113th Steve Hunt, 122nd Stuart Hunt, 127th Andrew Stewart, 141st Mike Rosbrook. Juniors' Race: 1st Alex Baxter, 21st Ewan Baxter, 65th Elizabeth Stewart Sun 14th October 2012: Great Eastern Half Marathon Anne, Jackie and Corinna set off bright and early heading up the A14/A1 to run the Perkins Great Eastern half marathon in Peterborough. Weather conditions were perfect as they joined 4,500 other runners on The Embankment start line to begin the 13.1 run through the flat citywide course. Running through the suburbs, with continual vocal support and sugary treats being handed out (yum yum!) Peterborough lived up to its billing as one of the fastest races in Britain as both Corinna (1.51) and Jackie (2.08) posted PBs. Anne (2.20) racing for the first time since her Brighton marathon back in April was pleased to get some long mileage in before she embarks on winter marathon training once more! A well organised race that is to be recommended for those chasing a PB and who expect a decent goody bag thrown in too! More of the same for 2013 please....

Newton Green seniors flushed with success A much coveted piece of glazed chinaware has been won back by the male seniors’ section of Newton Green Golf Club. Each year the ladies of the club take on the seniors for the prestigious Water Closet Trophy, with each side taking it in turns to host the event. Despite being in the chair, the ladies lost their grip on the trophy in a 36-a-side greensomes format match, which saw the ladies unusually winning only one of the 18 games. However, four games Di Cunningham presents the Water were halved, giving a final 15-3 Closet Trophy to Bill Havers victory to the seniors. It meant the seat on the trophy must stay up for the next 12 months in the club’s trophy cabinet, as opposed to being in the down position when the ladies have possession of the piece of porcelain. Seniors vice captain Bill Havers was presented with the trophy by lady captain Di Cunningham.

Hadleigh Bowling Club celebrated the formal end of the season with their Presentation Dinner Dance. The guests of honour were Mr Les Clark, President of the English Bowling Federation on his first day in the post; accompanied by his lady wife who were welcomed along with members and their guests by our chairman Audrey Nelson. After an excellent meal our President, Percy Fletcher reflected upon his early days playing under the Federation banner on some “interesting” greens and praised the progress that the Federation had made over the years before he proposed a toast to the Federation. Responding, Les thanked the club for their hospitality and recalled his early days playing at Boxford. Les then did the honours by presenting the trophies to this years winners and runners up. Pictured are the winners and runners up with Mr Les Clark after the formal presentation.
