“The Toughest Yet, But Starting To Take Shape” A Suffolk council which needs to find £1.3m of savings next year has taken a major step forward in identifying exactly how it will do this. Members on Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee today (January 12) considered a range of packaged options and after a thorough debate are recommending to all councillors the main areas where both new cuts and extra income could be found to balance the books for the 12 months from April. In addition to £1m worth of savings coming from the integration of the council’s staff with those of Mid Suffolk and radical changes to working practices, Strategy Committee councillors also backed: • a below-inflation Council Tax increase of 3.5% • use of part of the New Homes Bonus allocated to Babergh by the government(with the reminder targeted upon way to support local economic growth) • an increase in long-stay car parking charges from £1.50 to £2 for anyone parking for three hours or longer • a continuation of the public convenience closure scheme – again in consultation with local parish and town councils to identify new management opportunities with them • an expansion of the customer-funded brown (garden waste) bin scheme

Councillors also decided to drop the consideration of short-stay car parking charges and called a halt – pending a review – to planned further reductions in the grants available to community groups. Cllr Jennie Jenkins, Chairman of the Strategy Committee, reflected that “I believe that these proposals accurately reflect the kind of balance that our residents and other bodies are asking us to strike as we go about the painful and difficult business of sorting out next year’s budget. I believe I speak on behalf of all Babergh councillors when I say thank you to our staff who once again have borne the brunt of these cutbacks. Their support and resilience in tough times is much appreciated”. “For such a well-run council as Babergh, having to find such enormous savings is difficult. Indeed, this year’s budget is the toughest yet, but at least it is beginning to take shape”. Cllr Jenkins was also keen to thank the many community groups and parish and town councils who had been working with Babergh since August last year to look at new and more cost-effective ways of delivering its services in the longer-term. Many of these ideas are being worked up in more detail and Babergh is looking forward to receiving more information in due course.

Love Hadleigh, Love Your Heart Hadleigh residents are being challenged to wear their heart on their sleeve and join in the British Heart Foundation’s annual campaign to increase awareness of heart and circulatory disease and raise vital funds to save lives. Local people can order their special “Red for Heart” fundraising packs to plan their event for National Heart Month which will take place this February. You can download your pack at: www.bhf.org.uk/red or call 0300 330 0645 to order your free fundraising kit for February today. Create your own event during February. You could dye your hair red and get friends to sponsor you or hold a speed dating party on Valentine’s Day. You can also join thousands of people across Suffolk and the UK on National Wear Red Day – Friday 24 February by dressing up red for the day to raise vital funds. Heart disease is an urgent problem in Suffolk. One in three of all deaths is from cardiovascular disease. It is a problem that affects both men and women. Worryingly women are more than three times more likely to die of coronary heart disease than breast cancer. Alex Mayer, British Heart Foundation Manager for Suffolk said: “Please wear your heart on your sleeve this February and raise vital cash to fund life saving research and equipment. Join in our red themed fun - wear red to work or school, bake red cakes and eat your heart out, or even stop seeing red with a swear box around the office! “Everyone knows someone who has suffered from heart disease or a heart attack. One fundraising event can make such a difference. £100 can help to fund a cardiac nurse working on the British Heart Foundation Heart Helpline for a full day. Have fun and save lives and you will have our heartfelt thanks.”

The Hen House: A new group for the young(ish) women of Hadleigh and surrounding villages On the 9th January we met for an evening of sniffing, swirling and gulping at the Adnams wine shop. We were incredibly well looked after by Luke, the manager, who organised a world tour of 10 wines to tickle our taste buds! This including a very good sparkling wine created in England (which would rival any of its French components), as well as some European and New World wines. We can all now firmly say that we know a rioja from a rosé and most importantly what our own preferences are! This included a few surprises for several of us who discovered likings for previously unexplored tipples. Huge thanks to Luke for not only giving up his Monday evening for us, but also for presenting all his knowledge in such an accessible and friendly way, we really enjoyed ourselves. The Hen House is a group of women aged somewhere between our 30ish to 50ish (although we promise not to ask!) who meet up on the second Monday of each month for a natter and giggle and to do something different each time. If you fancy ditching the remote control for a night and joining us then you would be very welcome! Over indulged at Christmas and New Year? Feel fat and unhealthy? It’s that time of year when we all promise ourselves we will get fit and healthy this year, we will lose those extra pounds and we will join a gym and keep going beyond March. Each year we make these resolutions and fail. Will this year be any different? Let’s face it. Most of us are overweight because we eat too much and exercise too little and not because of some underlying medical condition. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is so important to our overall health – it reduces our risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. A good way to check if you are overweight is to use the BMI or Body Mass Index. Why not log onto are website at www.millpharmacy.co.uk and use our BMI calculator to work out your BMI? If you don’t have a computer our staff at Mill Pharmacy will be happy to calculate it for you. A score of over 25 means that you are overweight. Our website will also provide links to Slimming World, Weight Watchers and other weight management sites where you will be able to glean useful information on eating healthily and losing weight. At the moment they are all offering special rates to join. In addition Mill Pharmacy stocks the diet capsule Alli the first nonprescription diet capsule licensed by the European commission which can be used by people with a BMI of 28 or over to lose weight. This is a very effective way of losing weight provided you follow a reduced calorie low fat diet – for every 2lbs you lose Alli can help you lose 1lb more. However, it is not suitable for everyone as it can interact with some medicines and is also contraindicated in certain medical conditions. If you want to know if Alli is suitable for you why not book a FREE confidential appointment with our pharmacist who will also be able to give you professional advice on calorie controlled diets and various forms of exercise. So with all this help and support available this year can be different. This year you can lose weight and keep it off. This year you can be healthy.

D-Day Cycle Ride to raise funds for MAG (The Mines Advisory Group) In June Glenn Abbassi will be cycling 217 miles (348 km) to raise funds for MAG. The route is from London to Portsmouth to board the ferry to Cherbourg. From there the cyclists will ride to Ste Mere Eglise where paratroopers landed on D-Day to secure the route to Utah Beach. The following day they will visit Utah and Omaha beaches, where 34,250 soldiers landed on 6th June 1944 for Operation Overlord, before heading inland to spend the night at the historic town of Bayeaux. The final day's cycling along the coast includes Arromanches and sightings of German batteries and bunkers, and the cyclists will arrive at Pegasus Bridge, before finishing the ride at the British cemetery at Ranville and a final few miles into Caen. Glenn, the only female member of the Rotary Club of Hadleigh, saw the cycle ride mentioned in a Rotary newsletter, and thought it sounded an excellent way of promoting the international aspect of Rotary. She would greatly appreciate donations to this worthwhile cause which can be made on http://www.justgiving.com/Glenn-Abbassi or by texting PTJG51 to 70070. These will be personally acknowledged, and Glenn will be very grateful for support (and suggestions for further ways of fundraising!). Although Glenn did cycle 450 miles from St Petersburg to Moscow in 1996, she was obviously a lot younger, and in her late 60s this year's ride may be even more of a challenge!

Hadleigh Folk and Acoustic Music Nights As previously announced, Friday 3rd February will be spent with KEGS, a trio of songwriters who also perform material from the international folk tradition and pop culture, on guitar, melodeon and flute (www.kegsband.co.uk). They will be supported by a popular local performer, Elaine Barker, singing some well known songs and maybe even a monologue. Following that, we will meet again on Friday 2nd March when our guests will be Issy and David Emeney. Issy and David now live in Somerset but are originally from the Sudbury area and David's family once owned a pub in Hadleigh. The duo sing traditional songs and Issy also writes many of her own songs based on stories of local people and historical events (www.issyemeney.co.uk). The support act for the evening will be Paul Riley, from Colchester, who sang a couple of songs on our first event, plus the usual floor singers. We would like to give you advance warning of our June event which takes place on Friday 14th as we are trying something different. We are holding a barn dance, so it won't be a sitting and listening evening but a joining in one. The caller for this will be local lad Steve Wiles who is very experienced and is certain to get everyone dancing. If this kind of thing is new to you, don't worry because you'll soon get the hang of it. The Hosepipe Band will play their danceable music for the evening, so do come along and bring all your friends. (www.myspace.com/thehosepipeband) We look forward to seeing you on these occasions. The evening starts at 8pm and admission is ÂŁ5 (ÂŁ2 for performers). Remember that there is no bar at the Ansell Centre but you can bring your own drinks or you can buy them at the well-stocked corner shop 'Mixers' (Church St/High St). If you have any queries or suggestions, or would like to be included as a floor singer, please call 01473 828745 or email us at aqwc71@dsl.pipex.com.

Owls and Horses Apart from all the various U3A interest groups getting started into the new year the first monthly meeting in the Ansell Room was a fascinating account by Chris Miller of the creation of the Suffolk Horse Centre at Hollesley Bay. Mainly run by volunteers, like Mr Miller, it has grown to be not only the major resource for the breeding and survival of these beautiful animals but also a tourist attraction. Pictured are members of the committee with Charles Partridge (right) at the installation of the barn owl nesting box in an oak tree on his farm in Lower Layham in January.

Murder Most Manic! Having recovered from their recent panto ‘Treasure Island’ Boxford Drama Group is embarking (no pun intended) on their next production and this time it is the comedy farce by Jack Sharkey entitled ‘The Murder Room’. Shortly after her marriage, Mavis Hollister, a villainess if ever there was one, and her lover put into motion their cunning plot to kill her wealthy new husband, Edgar. Meanwhile Edgar catches his new bride telling obvious lies about where she has spent the evening and Mavis is forced to think quickly to concoct a whole scenario which becomes more and more ludicrously frantic as the questioning progresses, all culminating in her improvised second attempt on Edgar’s life which seems to succeed rather well and all too easily.............or did it? Before long the family cat cops it and Edgar’s body vanishes. The arrival of Edgar's nice but dim daughter Susan, with fiancé in tow, plus an interfering housekeeper, fails to help, as do the two bumbling members of the local Constabulary. All manage to complicate everything as they try to solve the mystery of Edgars' disappearance whilst being thwarted by an ever increasingly manic Mavis. The Murder Room is a comic gem with a loony plot, barmy characters, slick and fast-moving dialogue and a cellar with a great deal of steps. Complication follows complication until chaos reigns supreme, and all directed by Jane Lindekam who helmed BDG’s Tiptoe Through the Tombstones, Brush With a Body and the popular. Farndale comedies. Performance dates are Thursday 8th 7.30pm £7.00 no supper or £13 with supper, Friday 9th and Saturday 10th March 7.30pm £13.00 with supper. Tickets will be available from Boxford Newsagents from Saturday 4th February, or you can reserve tickets by emailing bdgtickets@btinternet.com - simply tell us the day you want and how many tickets you would like. Howard with Alan Keeble at Bower House Farm Here I am in February and I am still writing about Christmas. And it came to pass on Christmas Eve that I was very busy playing the piano and organ. Alan Keeble a local country landowner and Lord of the Manor of Polstead was keen that the Guns at the Bower House Shoot (top brass from all corners of the UK) should be entertained by a local celebrity. Naturally, Alan’s thoughts turned to me and he asked that I should play for their lunch. I accompanied Jessica Simmons who with a crystal clear voice charmed the audience with Piu Jesu and the Snowman. Jessica’s teacher opera singer Maggie Addison sang O Holy Night. Her bosom heaved as she struck the top notes with gusto and Alan Keeble kept a close eye on his light bulbs as they rattled with the acoustics. The picture shows us all after our performances. I was delighted to receive from the Shoot £200 as a gift to St Elizabeth Hospice in memory of my father who died there (at the Hospice and not the shoot) last June. The carols by candle-light at Flowton Church beckoned in the evening. Many of you will know Miranda Reckitt (Mackintosh) who lives close to my office who has been one of the leading matrimonial lawyers in East Anglia. I was so pleased to be able to join her at her retirement party at her firm Kerseys in Ipswich. VIPs apart from myself numbered lawyers and Judges some of whom I was pleased to find, like you, to be followers of “our” column. It was a pleasure to join Mark David of The Cooking Experience at a smashing Christmas lunch for twenty five: do sign up for a cookery course in the High Street (Tel. 01473 827568). I mentioned in January my time at Pinner Grammar School. Blow me down: Tom Langley from Ann Beaumont Way popped in to say that he was at the School a few years earlier. He brought with him a magazine for old students. I thumbed the pages only to find reproduced an article that I had written about a visit to the Royal Cinema at Buckingham Palace in 1978. What a coincidence. One of my readers mentioned to me a TV soap “The Only Way is Essex” – a little too coarse for our liking. Hadleigh would be a better substitute. And what of my chauffeur Frank and cook Maria. Well, I gather that they have been trying for a baby. I expect they will get bored with it and go back to Canasta. First Time Buyers your relief from Stamp Duty Land Tax ends on 25 March. You might just buy somewhere in time. Give me a call if you decide to do so and if it all makes you feel ill then let me make your Will. Howard Gibbons

this then please mention it to our reception staff, who will be pleased to explain further the services we can offer including: Wheel Alignment: Driving your vehicle with badly aligned wheels will result in poor handling and excessive tyre wear. This is not only expensive but also potentially dangerous too. We can carry out a full four wheel geometry check and provide a colour printout at the end. On vehicles where adjustment is possible to correct discrepancies we can do this at the same time and where any problems are too severe to be corrected merely by adjustment then we can advise further. If all readings are fine then at least you have peace of mind and the results to keep. Air Con: Automotive Air Conditioning systems require regular maintenance in order that they remain efficient but also to ensure that your health is not compromised as bacteria can build up in the system and needs to be eradicated. We have our own Air-Con servicing system on site and our trained technicians can take care of this for you. Please give us a call for services and prices. Paintless Dent Removal: If you have an annoying dent or dents on your vehicle and the We have the very latest 4 wheel paint finish has not been alignment equipment for cars, 4x4’s broken it may be possible to and light commercials have it/them removed at a greatly reduced price than if the paintwork had to be reinstated. A lot depends on the exact location of the damage and the nature of it but it may well be worth giving us a call to investigate, It could work out cheaper than you thought. This type of damage is probably best attended to if your car is already in our shop but nevertheless why not give us a call. Tyres: Perhaps when you think of a Bodyshop you don’t automatically associate the image with replacement tyres but we are continually supplying more and more tyres for our customers’ cars and they are increasingly finding this very convenient, especially when the vehicle is already in our shop for some body damage, just ask our staff if you are interested in some new tyres. If you need to arrange for your vehicle to be repaired why not contact us on 01473 747868 and let us make the whole process as least stressful as possible for you.

Inspired by Gainsborough: Landscape Prints from the Gainsborough's House Collection 14 January 2012 to 24 March 2012 This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to see a number of prints and rare books from the Gainsborough's House permanent collection. In the decades following his death Thomas Gainsborough’s landscape drawings and prints provided inspiration for the progressive work of artists and printmakers in England and the publication Wooded Landscape with Figures and of various books of prints. Cattle at a Pool c1778 Produced for private study, Thomas Gainsborough such books helped to shape Gainsborough’s reputation as an exemplar of a particular idea of English landscape. The prints and books on display in this exhibition, which are seldom on public view, demonstrate Gainsborough’s influence on printmaking. The oldest of the books is a rare edition of Imitations of Modern Drawings 1784-1788 put together by a contemporary of Gainsborough, Thomas Rowlandson (1756 –1827). It contains prints taken from the drawings of Gainsborough and other artists. It is the only one of the books to have been produced in Gainsborough’s lifetime. The exhibition focuses on the prints of William Wells, John Laporte and Thomas Rowlandson produced between the years 1788 and the early years of the nineteenth-century. Original drawings and prints by Gainsborough are also on display. 46 Gainsborough Street, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 2EU Telephone: 01787 372958 Fax: 01787 376991 mail@gainsborough.org www.gainsborough.org

institutionalisation of Health Mid January saw the publishing of a report by the NHS Future Forum. The report contained the suggestion that GPs “should aim with every contact to offer advice and support to maintain or improve a person's mental and physical health and wellbeing, which might mean looking outside their initial symptom or concern". However there are significant problems with the advice given through the government controlled institutions of health, including the NHS and the Department of Education. It is becoming clear that centrally planned health policies are not effective in creating healthy societies. Ceding personal responsibility for health to central government and its varous institutions often leads to contradictions, as illustrated below. It is well known that high glycemic index foods (including rice, breads, pastas and potatoes) cause weight gain: “This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that with increased glycemic index, more insulin is produced and more fat is stored, suggesting that type of carbohydrate may be related to body weight." Am. J. Epidemiol. (2005) “The Government recommends that all healthy individuals should consume a diet that contains: plenty of starchy foods such as rice, bread, pasta and potatoes” FSA Nutrient and Food Based Guidelines for UK Institutions. "In 2009-10 almost one in four reception pupils was either overweight or obese – 23.1% – while among year six children the figure was 33.4% – more than a third." The Guardian. "Government projections show that if current trends continue, nine out of 10 men will be overweight within 15 years, and at least half the population obese within 25 years." The Telegraph “The Structure and Balance of the Curriculum ... recommends a minimum allocation of 15% of curriculum time for the Expressive Arts. Where schools allocated the minimum time to the Expressive Arts, classes often had less than one hour per week for physical education.” HM Inspectorate of Education Institutionalisation of heatlh leads to ‘one size fits all’ strategies that fail most individuals; it also robs people of the right and responsibility for their own health. For a joined-up and common sense approach to health, and to find out how you can reclaim control of your personal health, call 01473 826232 today.

Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare Christmas Bazaar Visitors turned out in force again last month to support the Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare Christmas Bazaar held at Hintlesham Community Centre. The sum of £850, raised on the day, was boosted to over £1000 thanks to generous match funding from Barclays Bank. A sincere thank you to everyone who supported SESAW during 2011 which was a particularly difficult year. An overwhelming number of Andrew Bryce who offered his sick and abandoned animals Rare Breed Sausages at the Bazaar arrived at the Sanctuary. Many have started new lives with caring owners, some are still suffering the effects of gross neglect, others await rehoming. It would be impossible to carry on this work without the generosity of the public, the co-operation of local companies, vets and the media and the unfailing volunteers. 2012 is off to a good start with the news that SESAW is the chosen charity for the Bypass Nurseries Primrose Festival, from 25th February to 4th March. There will be craft stalls at this every popular event and the company will donate 5p to SESAW for every primrose sold.

Cambridge Weight Plan comes to Hadleigh Four years ago Val Lord was overweight and miserable! All her attempts at losing weight had failed miserably. She was due to have a hip replacement operation in a few months and wanted to do all she could to ensure a speedy recovery. A friend had been successful with the Cambridge Weight Plan so she decided to try it out for herself - she had nothing to lose – except those excess pounds! She was thrilled when she achieved her goal weight in time for her operation and has kept it off ever since! She said: “It was wonderful being fully mobile again with my new hip, to be able to shop for some lovely new clothes and, of course, getting lots of compliments.” A few months later Val trained to become an Independent Cambridge Consultant and has since helped hundreds of people on their own weight loss journeys. The Cambridge Weight Plan is a nutritionally complete Very Low Calorie Diet based on meal replacements – shakes, soups, porridge & chocolate bars. Originally developed by doctors for use in hospitals, it has been available in the UK for 27 years with research continually improving it. The 6 different levels mean you can choose a programme, with or without food, to suit yourself. If you would like help with a weight problem, Val is now available on Mondays at French Complexion, Queen Street, Hadleigh. Appointments are on a one-to-one basis and last approx. 45 minutes. For an informal chat please call 01449 737113 or 07519 177645 or visit www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL for more information.

Dear Sir Hurray! At last someone has said something to a parent parking in Gaell crescent to take children to local school. I can’t condone putting home made parking tickets on cars, but something must be done. We all knew we would get clobbered when double yellow lines were placed on the entrance to Clopton Gardens. I wish I could say that the cars were parked but most of the time they are simply abandoned anywhere the drivers see fit, half on the grass verges, on corners, close to the junction, opposite other parked cars and opposite private garages. The junction from Highlands Road into Gaell Crescent is bad due to the vehicles parked. And this all happens twice every day Monday to Friday. I really don’t want to see double yellow lines in this road as this makes it awkward for the residents who have no garage spaces. Rule 243 The Highway Code states amongst others, do not stop or park • Anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Vehicle. • Opposite or within 10 metres (32ft) of a junction, except in an authorised parking place. • Opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked car. • Where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles. • In front of an entrance to a property. • On a bend. Most of the above apply to some of the vehicles that are parking in the Crescent. I wonder how many of those drivers live in Hadleigh and could walk to the school? I know I have mentioned that dreadful word WALK. Sorry. David S. Abbott

Its me, I am back, can't say that I have been far away! I would like to wish all that matters to me, a very Good New Year, I trust you have had a very nice and restful Christmas. It is very quiet on the Tesco front, something could happen in that direction this year. My previous suggestion to site a new store next to the Fire Station/By Pass, would be a very good option. Sell the Brett Work Site to Babergh and to all who have opposed Tesco's coming to Hadleigh, and see what they can, and would do, to this rat infested bit of waste land. Carters are progressing with the ground work to the new leisure centre, here next to the Hadleigh Swimming pool. I can now see the play area known as Cox's, is getting more in decline, with the clever wigs in Babergh deciding to use it at will on yet another mad cap scheme. What are our children to do, not much space for them to get their excercise, which is both good for body and mind. ‘East House’!! What a shame, a fine and useful building going to waste, and costing us Tax Payers money for its Security!! Hadleigh is getting ever larger, with the Increase in population, but very few open spaces, and amenities. John Caley

One of Suffolk’s leading hearing care specialists, is putting its weight behind a national campaign to support those with the condition known as tinnitus. The Hearing Care Centre, based in High Street, Ipswich, is teaming up with the British Tinnitus Association to better educate GP’s about the increasing condition, after a recent study[1] suggested that GPs have an unmet need for specific training on tinnitus management. As a result many patients are walking away from GP surgeries without help or support for their condition. The campaign comes as part of the annual Tinnitus Awareness Week (6th – 11th February 2012). The Hearing Care Centre, which prides itself on its community activities, is communicating with all GP’s in the county throughout January, and is giving them the top ten tips that they should know about tinnitus and how to deal with patients. Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of any corresponding external sound, and can be experienced as buzzing, whistling, ringing, hissing or a variety of other sounds. Sometimes sufferers only notice these sounds when it is very quiet, such as at night. Others find that the sound can be loud enough to intrude on everyday life. Managing Director and trained Tinnitus Councellor, Karen Finch explained that tinnitus affects more people than you might think, “Around 7 million people in the UK have experienced tinnitus at one time or another – it can happen at any age. For at least half a million, the effect on their life is severe.” “Although many GPs do some fantastic work, for many patients GP’s are telling them that they just need to live with their condition. Unfortunately tinnitus is a poorly understood condition, and we need to do something about that”. As part of Tinnitus Awareness Week, The Hearing Care Centre is also holding an information drop-in session at their practice in Ipswich. On Wednesday 8th February 2012, between 10am-3pm, members of the public can call in and pick up free information on tinnitus, purchase products that assist with the condition, as well as speak to a Tinnitus Lay Counsellor for free advice. For more information on Tinnitus Awareness Week visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/tinnitus

There have been a numerous amount of calls to the Police about Dogs and owners not taking control of them, so hopefully the following information will be of use? Control of Dogs, The Law and You You could be breaking the law by allowing your dog to be dangerously out of control…. What Is Meant By Dangerously Out Of Control? Any dog is dangerously out of control if: • It injures a person, or • It behaves in a way that makes a person worried that it might injure them. The law applies everywhere the general public is allowed to go and anywhere your dog goes where it is not supposed to be. The maximum penalty for allowing a dog you own or are in charge of to be dangerously out of control is two years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both. In addition, if your dog is dangerously out of control in its own home or garden then the police or anyone else that is worried about the dog being a risk could also seek a control order. If your dog injures another person’s animal, or an owner of an animal reasonably believes that they could be injured if they intervened to protect their animal from your dog, then an offence may be committed. If you do not keep your dog under control, your dog could be destroyed and you could be banned from keeping a dog. Or you might be ordered to keep your dog muzzled when taking it for a walk. If you use your dog to injure someone then you may be charged with malicious wounding. The maximum penalty for this is five years’ imprisonment. Dogs out of control in a public place If a dog is dangerously out of control in a public place - then the owner or the person in charge of the dog is guilty of an offence, or, if the dog while so out of control injures any person, an aggravated offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. In proceedings against a person who is the owner of a dog but at the material time was not in charge of it, it should be a defence for the accused to prove that the dog was at the material time in the charge of a person whom he reasonably believed to be a fit and proper person to be in charge of it. Section 10(2) of the 1991 Act defines a public place as meaning any street, road or other place to which the public have, or are permitted to have access. This is a wide definition of a public place and one which specifically includes the common parts of a building containing two or more dwellings. It is intended to cover, for instance, those parts of a block of flats where, although there may be a secure front entry door so that the interior of the flat is not a place to which the public has unrestricted access, nevertheless the common parts are, in all other respects, a public place. A person found guilty of an offence may face imprisonment or a fine, and the courts may disqualify the offender from having custody of a dog for any period. Two of the butterflies Butterflies all belong to a group of insects called “Lepidoptera” and are true insects with the body parts that you learned about at school, Head, Chest (thorax) and Body (abdomen). Their flamboyant wing colouring is the result of light bouncing off the minute scales covering both surfaces. The colourless blood is pumped round both body and wings by a primitive heart located – not in the chest as you might expect – but in the abdomen. The females lay eggs on specific plants, which hatch to become the familiar caterpillars (Larvae). When these have grown large enough they weave themselves a silken protective shell (chrysalis) and undergo an amazing transformation. Their body breaks itself down into a “soup” and then rebuilds itself into a butterfly. At the end of this process they break out of their protective coat, sit for a while to allow their wings to expand and dry, and then fly off as butterflies. There is no competition between caterpillars and adults for food because they feed on different food sources. The caterpillars feed on plant material (generally leaves) and the adults on nectar, using their long tubular mouth part to reach into flowers. Some can survive the winter in various forms here in the UK, but others are migrants Brimstones (Gonepteryx rhamni) These are the earliest butterflies that you are likely to see, emerging late February, early March. They’re bright sulphur yellow and you’ll see them fluttering among the leafless tree. They live for a very long time (often in excess of a year) and are one of the few butterflies that actually hibernate here as adults. It is these emerging adults that you see in the spring. The eggs are laid on Buckthorn during late March - April. After about 3 weeks these hatch to become the caterpillars which will spend all spring “fattening” up on the Buckthorn leaves. During late June or July they will become a chrysalis (pupate) emerging as adults in late August or early September to feed on nectar and the juice of over-ripe fruit to gain sufficient reserves for their winter hibernation. By mid-September these adults will be looking for somewhere frost proof to spend the winter, (such as the bark under dense Ivy) where there they will hang motionless until “awakened” by the early spring sun to start the process again. The one in Photo 1 has its wings folded! I’ve never seen one that has landed with its wings open, that’s something they just don’t do. Red Admirals (Vanessa atalanta) Although a few are now being recorded as overwintering in the southern parts of the UK these are generally considered to be one of the migrant species, flying in from the temperate parts of Europe. The first ones (which are often very battered in appearance) appear in June or July and have flown in from the Continent; those appearing between July and November are the result of the eggs laid by these migrants. Once here the female lays individual eggs on the leaves of Stinging –nettles (Urticus diocre) which hatch after a couple of weeks to become caterpillars (Larvae) to feed on the nettle leaves. You will normally only find them individually because they’re cannibalistic and will actually eat one another. They shelter themselves from both the elements and predators by weaving together leaves to form a protective “tent”; emerging only to feed. Red Admiral’s mating habits are strange; the males are territorial, sitting about waiting for the wandering females to come to them – avoids a lot of chasing about!

Thankyou The Salvation Army Hadleigh Corp would like to thank all who donated to our Carol Singing in Hadleigh High Street on 17th December, the total collected was £415.82. 16

The Porch Project opens its doors and wins a Community Award! Babergh District Council has revealed the 25 winners of its Community Achievement Awards 2012 and among them is a Church Project for young people in Hadleigh. The project, based in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh, which offers free hospitality and provides a safe space for up to 200 young people to meet, receives the Judging Panel’s Special Award. Babergh’s award scheme which is now in its 20th anniversary year aims to highlight the work of those individuals and groups who make a real difference by give up their time for the benefit of their local schools and communities. A business award will be received by MWAH Fitness, of Sudbury, who have supported many community projects in the area and The Sudbury and Great Cornard Young Filmmakers, led by Paul Press, receive a community group award. In the young people’s category students from East Bergholt High, Sudbury Upper and Great Cornard Upper School receive awards as do young people from the Ryes College and the Royal Hospital School. All the winners were notified before Christmas and have been invited to a special awards ceremony to celebrate their achievement and to receive their awards on 7th March. Jill Barton, Babergh’s Community Development Officer, said: “It is fantastic that in our 20th year we received so many worthy nominations which made judging extremely difficult. “However, we are really pleased to be able to award so many young people and young people’s projects this year, particularly the Porch Project, in Hadleigh, which demonstrates a real passion for working with, and for, young people in its community. “Having visited the Porch I have nothing but admiration for the work that is being done there.” Mark Murphy, from BBC Radio Suffolk “Big Conversation” programme, will compere the awards ceremony which is to be held on Wednesday 7th March at the Stoke by Nayland Club and is again sponsored by Prolog of Sudbury for the 11th year. Other local award winners were: GARY GIRLING – HADLEIGH CRICKET CLUB GARY has been Chairman of Hadleigh Cricket Club since 2009. In that time he has provided the Club with the leadership required to achieve ECB “Clubmark” status. This gives clubs an opportunity to write and implement new procedures as well as acknowledge existing practices. The work required to achieve and maintain this accreditation is significant and Gary’s enthusiasm has encouraged others to ensure all of the criteria have been met. The Junior Practice Evening is fantastic – 80 young people in different age groups all being developed by qualified coaches. Not content with the Clubmark Gary also encouraged the Club to become registered to deliver cricket directly into local schools and coaching was delivered to five local primary schools during summer 2011. Gary must be one of the longest serving groundsmen in the country, having looked after the ground since 1968. The Ground appears in the Wisden Calendar as one of the Grounds of the Year and during the summer Gary is there every evening maintaining its quality. Gary was invited to Lords last year to attend the presentation of the Natwest Outstanding Services to Cricket Awards and was successful in being the Suffolk finalist. Gary has always been an active fundraiser for the Club, using all of his practical skills and for many years has organised the Annual Summer Fete. All the money raised goes into improving facilities at the Club. Gary has also been one of the leading players at the Club; as Captain his teams were well organised and competitive and youngsters were always encouraged and developed. His supporters say: “Gary has always led from the front with a smile on his face, working tirelessly for the Club and community”. ROLF BEGGEROW – HADLEIGH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB ROLF has been involved with Hadleigh United FC for many years and has promoted both youth and senior football. As Treasurer, he has dedicated a large amount of his free time since 1991 in raising funds via grants and donations in order for the Club to survive and be financially sound. Rolf has also been known to use his own money rather than see the Club pay high interest rates. With his financial knowledge the Club has achieved a new car park; newly refurbished function suite and bar; plus a new changing room and toilet facilities. Rolf has also arranged for the football pitches to be maintained at the level required by the football association and arranged for junior and youth pitches to be available when required on Sunday mornings. With Rolf’s help the Club’s facilities are one of the best at the level of football in which they play and the Club in theory is five promotions away from reaching the football league, which is a great achievement. He has

also recently taken on the role of acting Chairman for the Club. Rolf’s contribution has seen the rise of the Club’s Youth Section and approximately 180 young people now represent the Club. His supporter comments “I consider him to be a worthy recipient for this award as he has ANDREA NEWMAN – ELMSETT ANDREA has always been committed to helping people in whatever she does. Following her move to Elmsett in 1974 she immediately became involved in many aspects of village life including training for Playgroup leadership. In 1983 Andrea was appointed Clerk to Elmsett Parish Council and still holds that post today after 27 years! During that time she has worked with 6 Chairman and dealt with many important issues. Andrea has also worked to improve the transparency of the work of the parish through better communication and financial arrangements and spends many hours on parish matters. In addition to her parish work Andrea helps fundraise for the Church and sings in the Church Choir; her support to people involved in voluntary conservation work is invaluable and she helped to co-ordinate one of the first affordable housing schemes in the Babergh district. Her nominators say “Elmsett has benefited from Andrea’s contribution to the community and it would be fitting for her to be recognised formally.” MICHAEL NORMAN - BOXFORD MICHAEL’s nomination comes with a number of supporting letters. He joined the Parish Council in 2007 and it was soon apparent that he was going to be a real asset. Michael has always been proactive in achieving the best for the people of Boxford and has undertaken many tasks including completely reinstating a long bridleway and successfully repairing two major footpaths, saving the Council thousands of pounds. He was also instrumental in cleaning up the two cemeteries within the village, cutting back hedges and trees, planting 600 bulbs and erecting a beautiful seat. Michael has met the cost of all these projects himself. Michael has also restored the village war memorial, again saving the cost to the Council. He has also cleaned up a large disused play area, restoring it to the required standard. Michael’s latest project is trying to improve safety within the village, creating safer parking for parents and children. He is now Vice Chairman of the Council and an enormous supporter of the local village hall. His supporters say “Michael is a very highly respected councillor and resident. We consider him to be Boxford’s own Action Man.” played a significant part in the town’s sporting development.”

Jerry’s Diary From Boxing Day to Saturday 7th January there were some twitchy people running about in Lower Layham, armed with expensive telescopes, cameras on tripods and binoculars. What were they getting twitchy about? It must have been a bird, in fact it was a Great Grey Shrike. This great photograph of that very bird was taken by Chris Upson of Hadleigh. Not a ‘Mega’ but well worth seeing for those who needed it for their Three Year List or their Life List. Even better to see the Shrike on New Years Day for the Day List which the very keen birdrs take part in. The Shrike, also known as the Butcherbird because of their habit of impaling prey on thorns, known as a larder. Anything from small birds, mice, voles, shrews, worms and insects. I noticed the Layham bird had taken many worms from the ploughed fields and had hanged them on Blackthorns. Shrike are not birds of prey, but are songbirds. The Great Grey Shrike at Layham probably came from the northern populations which are migratory, often visiting the same area to winter. I was surprised the Layham bird was so popular because other birds were also in Norfolk, Essex and another one at Hollesley Common in Suffolk. The Layham bird would go missing for long periods with some people not seeing the bird at all. The last time Lower Layham got twitchy was when the Bufflehead Duck was found at the pits several years ago when some twitchers travelled over 200 miles to see it. I’m sure the Shrike didnt get anyone from that distance! With more birders in the area other uncommon species were seen, Hen Harrier, Merlin, Short Eared Owl and nine Whooper Swans flying NW over Hadleigh Heath. The Linnet flock between Holbecks Park and Hill Farm/Bullocky Fen area was very impressive with 400-500 feeding on fields and going to game cover during the first week of January. Several Bramblings, Greenfinch, 100+ Yellowhammers and 100+ Chaffinch were also in the game cover at Hill Farm, Layham. My local bird list for 2011 is 120 species, 2 up on 2010 which was 118 species. 62 species I had seen or heard on New Year’s Day in the five and half hours I was out walking the local patch - not too bad! Another bird species causing a bit of twitching in the area were 9+ Tree Sparrows with a large finch flock near Withermarsh. Its been 10 years since I last saw Tree Sparrows in Suffolk, they have become very rare, only a few are found during the winter months in the county. Long gone are the days when I used to see flocks of Tree Sparrows, 300 or 400 in the winter stubble. Any stubble fields that are left these days have been srayed with Round-up or similar weed killers. At last! On the 23rd December a Barn Owl seen near Kersey Brook. Don’t forget - If you see anything interesting please let me know! I can be contacted by email: jerry@keithavis.co.uk

A Happy New Year to everyone and to remind you that the next meeting is on February 13th when the subject will be the development of John Rye’s garden. Now what can I say about our Christmas meeting on 19th December?!! As usual that wonderfully sadistic couple, Phil and Chris, organised their dastardly idea of a quiz. Once again it aggravated, annoyed and amused us all in equal parts and by next year some of us will have to come up with ideas on how to nobble at least one member, won’t we namesake? It was certainly a most entertaining and ingenious quiz with rules that would confuse even the most erudite and seasoned quizzers - great fun and laughter was enjoyed by all and many thanks to Phil and Chris for the work, time and energy it must have taken to organise. What a strange year 2011 proved to be, some species produced two crops (well my Brown Turkey Fig did), but it has been so dry some crops failed completely or produced useless amounts and others have inundated us with their productivity - apples, cherries, plums and more jam than we know what to do with. So what will 2012 bring for us - other than the chaos of the Olympics? One thing is for certain, for us ever hopeful gardeners will be pouring over seed catalogues, planning the schedule of planting and positioning of said seeds/seedlings and generally looking forward to the months ahead with the fortitude of gardeners and farmers have always had to rely on. Fingers will be itching to open those beguiling packets, to plant those little miracles of nature and imaging their (hopefully) bumper crops. For more information phone Ruth Allen 822323

Volunteers Vicky and Marta fix oak shingles on the new roof Last year was a memorable year for OBee Community Interest Company who manage the Orchard Barn renovation project at Far Ringshall near Battisford. Firstly they completed the new roof. It was a marathon nine months of cleaving oak shingles to make and fit a mammoth 20,000 wooden roof tiles. More than seventy volunteers learnt greenwood working skills using traditional tools such as a Froe, Draw Knife and Side Axe. All in all, it was a ‘labour of love’. The end result is a beautiful roof with an authentic 17th century pitch. The rafters were mostly 50 year old oak ‘thinnings’ from woodland in Battisford - just 3 miles down the road. Orchard Barn was like a medieval timber yard! Battisford has a long tradition of timber framing. The first ever London Stock Exchange was commissioned to be made there by Sir Thomas Gresham almost 500 years ago - from trees grown at Barking and Battisford. OBee CIC are proud to be continuing the ‘tree to timber’ tradition. Secondly, OBee CIC won the planning appeal to use the barn for rural skills development. We will be opening in March with a wide range of natural and traditional building courses, including Heritage Home care and repair workshops. Come and make your own Wattle and Daub and learn about timber frame repairs. Thirdly, we completed the great Cob wall of Ringshall. Using only leg-power to stomp local clay, straw and hoggin into Cob – another traditional building material, it represents the ultimate in sustainability as we in Suffolk are blessed with a rich seam of Boulder Clay. Volunteers grew in fitness and skills - whilst building an all-natural traditional wall around what will be the outdoor learning area. Fourthly, Suffolk County Council recognised our achievement by giving us an Improve and Prove award. We are delighted. The renovation of Orchard Barn continues in 2012 with a series of practical courses that don’t cost the earth, but teach you how to work with the clay under your feet, the hazel from the hedgerow, and the coppiced trees from local woods. Alternatively, if you fancy some practical keep fit activities - we also offer some exciting volunteer opportunities. News from the Garden Personal Thoughts As far as vegetables are concerned I am ready for the new year. I have sat down and sorted out exactly which vegetables I am going to grow this year, and where I am going to grow them, and all the seed that I ordered has arrived. My vegetable plot is split into four roughly equal areas, and I use one area for each of the following groups of vegetables, (a) potatoes, (b) peas and beans, (c) onions, leeks and celeriac, (d) brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts etc). Each year they move around in a regular rotation so that for example potatoes are only on the same piece of ground once in 4 years. This helps to minimise the risk of pests and diseases building up in the ground. The other vegetable crops go in odd spaces. I do not grow carrots and parsnips because I have not got my soil deep enough or well drained enough to get a good crop. Each year it is a bit better, and I may try a trial row of carrots this year. So far in January the weather has been quite reasonable, and I think that I am better prepared for this years sowing and planting than I have been for years. The February talks on my garden are coming along well. Weather Records In December it did not seem to be that wet, but we had 66 mm (2.6") of rain, which is slightly above average. At the end of December the 3 month running total figure stood at 118.9 mm (4.7"), which was better, but still well short of the average figure . The total rainfall for 2011 was 477 mm (18.8"), which is extremely low compared with the average of about 620 mm (24.4"). I have been including these figures since 1998, and in the Kersey garden from which my figures come this was equal lowest with that for 2003. I was speaking to another local rainfall recorder, and he said that in his case it was the driest year that he had recorded in over 30 years of recording. This made me look at the records that I have got from Holbecks Park Hadleigh from 1938-1986. In this period there were 3 years with less rain, 1958 (438mm), 1964 (457 mm), and 1972 (436 mm) so we did not break any long term records. In December the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (55F) which is incredibly warm. November maximum temperatures are quite variable, but this figure is at the top end of the range. The minimum was 0 Cel (32F), which is a bit warmer than average. In my garden the ground temperature in mid January is 3 Cel (37F) which is quit normal. Hints With the current economic situation there will probably be more people wanting to grow food crops this year, and if we do not get excessive rain or snow in the next couple of weeks, it will be practical to sow a few vegetables in February and get a good start to the gardening year. Broad beans, peas, and shallots can all be planted. For small quantities you could raise broad beans in pots, and peas in lengths of guttering in a greenhouse or cold frame to plant out later. Partridges have their seed potatoes, and this year's Potato Day is at Stonham Barns on Saturday February 11th from 0930 to 1430. Some half hardy annuals need sowing in February in pots in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. These include lobelia, and begonias, but look at the seed packets. The key thing is to make sure you have all the seeds, compost and tools that you will need, ready to do all the March jobs as temperatures start to rise and plants start back into growth. John Rye

Tuesday Craft Club flies flag at The Olympics When Tuesday craft club members heard about the campaign to provide each Olympic competitor with a pennant to take home, they were fired-up to help. The deadline for work to be submitted was about eight weeks, so the pressure was on to design and complete one or more pennants in time. Strict guidelines were given by the organisers for size and shape and no use of any Olympic logos or even 2012. The group decided on a design with local flavour. With the blessing of the Town Council for use of the Hadleigh Town Crest, the first pennant finished was "The Other Hadleigh" (Hadleigh, Essex having their fame as Mountain Biking venue!) Four more pennants followed: "Suffolk Cottages", "London Icons", Suffolk Coast" and "Suffolk Farms". These and pennants made by other groups can be viewed at www.quilts4london.org.uk/inspiration/gallery.html

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group The club had one of its darkest days when we received the devastating news about the tragic death of Josh Rix. All our thoughts are with the Rix family as they come to terms with the terrible loss of both Josh and his mother Judy, who was always a keen supporter of both her sons. Josh was only 13 when he began playing for the club’s 3rd XI in 2001. One particular match that year stands out in the memory. We were all out for around 60 at Ampton & Culford, but Josh took great delight in top scoring with 13 when most of us failed to trouble the scorers. Neil Place and Josh’s brother Tim then bowled the home side out for 42, but Josh was adamant he had made the matchwinning contribution. Despite his youth Josh loved going on the club tours to Cromer and taking a full part in proceedings. Yes, he probably stayed up a little later than he should have done. Josh worked hard at his game and over the years developed into a hard hitting batsman, occasional wicket keeper and sometimes brilliant fielder in the gully. The bat seemed like a matchstick in his hands, but he could be so destructive with it. Although work commitments restricted his appearances at times, he was always in demand from captains. He had a great season in 2010, averaging over 30 for the Sunday XI and last year he scored nearly 200 runs for the 2nd XI. Batting with Josh was never dull, and umpiring at square leg while he was on strike was a somewhat unique sight in cricket! It is something of a cliché to say that someone played with a smile on their face. But Josh Rix played cricket and lived life with a massive grin on his, and made the game so much fun for his team-mates. He will be missed enormously by everyone at Hadleigh Cricket Club. The funeral for both Josh and Judy is on 14.02.12 at 12 noon at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. Gary Wiles

Hadleigh RFc 1st XV prior to their EC Div 2 game against Mistley. Hadleigh won 17pts to 10 keeping them top of the league 2012 seems to be starting off where 2011 finished for all teams in the Hadleigh Rugby Club. The 1st XV ended the year in top spot in the Eastern Counties Div 2 and after a four week lay off over Christmas and the New Year everything was back to normal. Hadleigh entertained third place Mistley on Saturday January 13th and, although rusty after the long lay off, came out comfortably with a 17pts to 10 win. This now places them at the top of the league with a two point cushion and ready to take on league rivals Thetford on January 27th. The club is going through a successful period at the moment with two senior teams now being fielded on a regular basis and the Youth, Midi and Mini rugby teams also taking their share of victories and success at the end of the year. The biggest success for the season so far must go to the U-13s team who came away as Suffolk Plate Champions on December 18th, beating Ipswich 25-0 in the final. Confidence at the club is running high at the moment in both the Senior and Junior sections. The club is still aiming to stride further ahead and if anyone is interested in becoming involve with the club either at either senior or junior level then please contact club chairman Alan Murray on 01473 652448 or Senior Playing Coach, Adam Miles on 07766 067823. If you are under 16 or over 6 and you are interested in playing then Mike Watts, Junior Coaching Co-ordinator, can be contacted on 01206 391676.
