Record year for the Hadleigh Show! Steward at the Hadleigh Show for sixty years and so this year can truly be considered a “diamond jubilee” celebration. This year’s visitors enjoyed the regular medley of exhibitors showing their cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys and horses; the show ring highlights included displays from the skilled Welsh Axe Racing Team, the Blazing Saddles stunt team, the ‘Lamb National’ sheep racing, terrier racing, sheep dog handling, falconry and the always popular packs of Hounds. ..Continued on page 2
In spite of a nail-biting few days leading up to Saturday 19th May, during which the organisers tracked the weather and prodded and trod the turf at Holbecks Park, the Hadleigh Show did indeed go on. And what a Show! A record crowd of around 12500 attended on the day; sponsorship support was doubled; trade stand applications became oversubscribed even earlier than usual and competitor numbers were up on previous years. The introduction of On-line e-tickets combined with the more traditional mode of advanced sales sold through local outlets ensured that the “Fast Track” entry fulfilled its promise. A big thank you for their retail support to: Keith Avis – Hadleigh; Hollow Trees Farm Shop – Semer; Boxford News – Boxford; Bates, Wells & Braithwaite – Sudbury; Hall Farm Shop - Stratford St Mary. Traffic planning was improved and credit is very much due to the Hadleigh Community Police for their continued advice and support and to Suffolk Highways who ensured that local work by the National Grid did not impact on the flow of traffic to and from the Show. The team of over 180 Stewards, all volunteers, did a sterling job in keeping the day running smoothly. One Steward who deserves a special mention is Tim Harris. Tim has been a

Record year for the Hadleigh Show In the Schools area children learnt to grind grain, knead dough and milk CLAra the Cow! In the Local Demonstrations Tent, other skills were to be learnt from Lavenham Weavers and chef Mark David. The Art Show had record sales and local creativity was also championed in the Flower & Children & Terrier Racing! Horticultural and Rural Crafts tents. The Hadleigh Show is the biggest fundraising event to be organised annually by the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association (HFAA), and any profits made are either given to local charities or ploughed back into the Show for future years. It is run by volunteers, too numerous to individually mention but their continued support and involvement is very much valued and appreciated. Hadleigh’s largest and longest-standing annual community event is made possible by the generous support of Mrs Robert Holden, who each year allows the Show to be held on her land at Holbecks Park. We are grateful to Mrs Holden’s continued patronage and we also thank this year’s Show Director Phil Bryce who now hands over the baton to Clare Lock to start preparations for next year’s show to be held on Saturday 18th May 2013. As part of the school's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the children at Hintlesham and Chattisham Primary school brought in a range of red, white and blue materials from home, with the idea of creating a huge Union Jack flag on the school playground. The children worked carefully together to gradually build up the picture and used everything from material scraps to painting aprons, trainers and bookbags. The end result was a striking and impressive Union Jack flag.

The last weekend in May saw glorious weather welcome our French Twinning friends to Hadleigh. The packed French coach arrived in Hadleigh to a "champagne" reception, courtesy of the Mayor, Mary Munson at the Royal British Legion Social club where hugs & speeches were exchanged. On Saturday they were given a tour of Vanners Silk Factory in Sudbury followed by lunch at the Mill Hotel. In the evening the Old Town Hall looked splendid in red, white & blue for an early Jubilee dinner followed by dancing in the Grand Hall. The Mayor was presented with a gift of a glass lamp which was handmade at the glass factory in Trelon that we visited last year. This lamp is now on display in the window of The Framestore. Sunday saw the customary French/English committee meeting this time in the splendid setting of the Guildhall garden whilst the members took part in a treasure hunt along the High Street. A shared picnic lunch followed in the garden and we were careful not to get sunburnt in the heat. Whilst we ate we were entertained by a group of singers from Ipswich who sang a jolly collection of songs; thanks to Bob Newton for bringing them. Our last meal was at Whatfield Village Hall; a tasty Bangers and Mash and trifle, thanks to Cheryl Chaplin for scrumptious catering on both nights. We then danced the evening away to Lyndy Lou, delighted the French with our eclectic raffle and rolled for a bottle of whisky. They left on Monday morning, you may have seen the emotional scenes at Magdalan Road car park and wondered what the commotion was! If you would like to join the Twinning activities we always welcome new members. The guests are accommodated in our homes which is an interesting linguistic and cultural experience. Throughout the year we hold various fun fundraising events so we can pay for this biennial weekend. Next year we go to France in May or June to be entertained by our French friends. Kathleen Freeth

Whatfield Playground News A lot has quietly been going on behind the scenes in Whatfield recently. Following much publicity & activity throughout last year regarding our fundraising, which was immensely fun to do & with great success. So this June the action started again – it took just seven days to have our long-awaited Playground finally installed. We now have a fantastic range of equipment which will keep all children occupied up to about 14 years. It is now open for all to use; it was great to see some of the children of Whatfield rush in to have fun on all the equipment immediately after the inspection was completed. A big thank you goes out to everyone involved with the project, either with their help & kindness or financially, or both – we could not have got this playground without you! Local Accountants raise money for Muscular Dystrophy The staff at Haines Watts accountants in Hadleigh held a bake sale and raffle recently all in aid of Muscular Dystrophy, their nominated charity of the year. Annie, Sarah and Liz from the office worked tirelessly visiting all the units on the Hadleigh Industrial estate selling homemade cakes and savouries. They also sold raffle tickets for prizes kindly donated by staff, customers and local firms such as Protocol UK, Gellux Nails and Coraff Carpets. "On the day we raised £307.35" said partner Trevor McLeese, who has Muscular Dystrophy himself "But with the draw for the raffle not until 6th July, the money is still rolling in" Along with the other East Anglian branches of Haines Watts the aim is to raise £2000 over the year, with £900 of that going to buy a child in the region, with Muscular Dystrophy, a motorised wheelchair. "It was a great day but hard work" said Trevor "But we look forward to our next event for the charity very soon" The work that Target MD does for Muscular Dystrophy goes a long way to raise awareness about the disease and help people whose everyday lives are challenged by it. PARTNERS IN CRIME. Nicci Gerrard & Jean French are no strangers to partnerships. Not only have they been happily married for over twenty years but also, using the pseudonym Nicci French, they have written many successful novels together. Members heard how they have progressed from mainstream journalism on The New Statesman in London, to full time crime writers in Suffolk. As most of the audience were familiar with their books, they were intrigued to learn how they could jointly write such mysterious, dark stories. They both gave their creative and practical reasons for this, including working in two different areas of their house; Nicci in a distant room and Sean in a shed in the garden. Email is essential, plus careful forward planning and a sensitive approach to each others work. Whatever alchemy there is between them, it clearly works well as their books have been exciting and disturbing millions of readers for many years. Several questions from the audience concluded a most enjoyable, interesting and absorbing evening. AN EXTRAORDINARY WOMAN Elizabeth Garrett Anderson’s CV would impress any present day employer. It is all the more outstanding given the discriminatory practices in place when this extraordinary woman gained her qualifications and attempted to start a career in medicine in the 1870’s. Speaker, Jennifer Jones, elaborated on Elizabeth’s incredible achievements. Having overcome a succession of gender-based difficulties Elizabeth finally became the first qualified female apothecary which meant she was officially approved to practice medicine in Great Britain. This was one of a list of "firsts"; first female apothecary and doctor, first female M.D. in France, the first female member of the British Medical Association, the first female dean of a medical school, and Britain's first female mayor(of Aldeburgh). Elizabeth’s death in 1917 in Aldeburgh brought her distinguished career to an end. Thanks to the resolve and grim determination of this amazing woman and her contemporaries, today’s women are able to enjoy full time education and pursue the career of their choice alongside their male counterparts. FAMOUS BRICKS REVISITED Water overhead and mud underfoot didn’t deter Fidelis ladies from exploring the rambling, extensive premises of the Bulmer Brick and Tile Company (BBTC), Sudbury just recently. Once the owner, Peter Minter, started to explain the various techniques and methods of creating the custom made building blocks, members soon forgot all about the inclement weather and soggy pathways. The group followed the BBTC’s unique brick making process from quarry to completion with Peter’s amusing anecdotes making the visit more personal, impressive and relevant to his recent building conservation talk. A hearty lunch at The Fox, Bulmer Tye afterwards, gave everyone time to socialise, warm up and dry out.

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Whilst many of you were enjoying the splendour of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations I was in my room having some quiet time when, with a clip clop of hooves, Charlie and Shannon went by as they headed out for a hack and some welcome exercise with Chris and Corrine in the saddle. It was then that I realised……to many, including me, their life appears to be one easy day after another; grazing in the fields; a few trips around the arena; back in for feeding and a nice hack out; what more could they wish for? Well……as Charlie and Shannon explained upon their return, me having decided to proffer that view, it’s not as easy as we may think. In normal life most horses and ponies have one keeper and rider but, in the case of The Shelley Centre, whilst Lyn is their keeper, the Herd works with what in effect are multiple Helpers all of whom have different ways of grooming, tacking up and handling. We then come to our Riders who, by their very being, have multiple exaggerated conditions in terms of their physical ability, riding competence and behavioural traits, which the Herd have to adapt to: the combination of these elements makes their work very demanding, not that they are complaining of course as they are only too aware of the importance of what they are doing. It is with this in mind, Lyn, our Stable Manager, looks to balance these issues as much as possible. A small number of our Helpers are designated as Minders, putting in additional time to work out their assigned horse or pony and amongst other activities, riding them out to ensure they are kept fit for the work they do: Lyn and her Helper team also provide the opportunity for schooling (That is riding or using the long reign in the arena) for all of The Centre’s horses and ponies which also has to fit in with their regular RDA workload. As part of their wellbeing, regular use is made of the Cyclo-ssage horse massage rug (Kindly donated by the Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club Veterans) and a horse physiotherapist visits the Herd at least biannually or more frequently if deemed necessary: their teeth and saddle fitting is also checked at least annually. This is in addition to normal feeding controls, Farrier and veterinary attention. From the aforementioned you may well deduce, correctly, that the ‘Stable Yard Environment’ at The Shelley Centre is more complex than average. Perhaps something to ponder when next you hear about the RDA and its work? From wellbeing to meeting the cost! I hear that the Hadleigh Show was a success for our stand raised about £1000 clear from the day. Howard with children of Whatfield School What a busy and difficult month it has been. Whilst Her Majesty the Queen had to endure that long-winded river pageant, I was on special duties at Whatfield School. I was delighted to be able to assist the Headmistress in collecting the Queen (of Whatfield School), her Consort and bodyguard from a re-enactment of the Coronation at Whatfield Church. Although the weather was inclement, we were able to have the hood down on a Rolls-Royce Corniche so that the VIP children could wave to their subjects in Whatfield. A good friend in the Principality of Claydon (a little known tax haven of the Eastern region) held a magnificent Diamond Jubilee Celebration dinner which was a joy and thankfully lacked the thronging hoi polloi around Buckingham Palace. I was delighted to see in the Letters Column last month that one of my readers thought that I should embark on a tour of the troops in Afghanistan. An upright would certainly not be becoming and I would have to ship the grand. I am not sure that my instrument would withstand the rigours of that environment. I did have to perform nearer to home for the Diamond Jubilee when I played light numbers outside for a Jubilee Party in the Churchyard at Flowton where we had a Beacon. The hours ran round from 8 o’clock to gone 10 when the Beacon was lit following a special instruction from Buckingham Palace. The weather was so cold and damp that it got into my bones and I was unable to move about for several weeks. One takes one’s health for granted and it does come as something of a blow when one suddenly at a tender age cannot pick-up a pen, get dressed or fill a hot water bottle. It is fortunate indeed that my domestic staff of Maria and Frank are able to keep me afloat. I am pleased to say though that as I pen these words I am very much better albeit that I have been under a physio-therapist in Ipswich. One does not know what is around the corner and so do make an appointment to draw your Will and indeed a Lasting Power of Attorney As this somewhat dreary month of June ebbs away, I will have completed ten years in practice in Hadleigh and some twenty six years of qualification. I am always pleased to see our established clients who seek advice on a range of matters. So many of you like to draw upon our property and commercial experience. I will tell you “as it is”. Daws Hall Nature Reserve and Gardens, Lamarsh, will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday 7th and 8th July, 2 - 5 pm. This twenty-acre nature reserve is normally open for schools to go and study the natural environment, but will, through the generosity of the Trust, be opened to the public on these two days, in aid of Holy Innocents Church, Lamarsh. The reserve provides a mosaic of well-managed habitats with flower-rich meadows, woodland on different soils sloping down to the ponds, a shallow fast-flowing stream and a section of the River Stour. An observation bee hive will be open - this affords children and adults an unrivalled opportunity to study these remarkable creatures in total safety. The gardens include a large collection of colourful waterfowl, many rare trees and shrubs, and a collection of old-fashioned roses. Drawings and Watercolours from a Private Collection 1700-1840 Gainsborough's House, 30 June – 29 September 2012 The main exhibition at Gainsborough's House for 2012 is a selection of British watercolours from a distinguished private collection in East Anglia. Formed during the 1950s and 1960s the extensive collection from which this selection of some 70 examples has been made by guest curator Huon Mallalieu, is one of the last remaining in private hands from the golden age of connoisseurship in British watercolours. The exhibition concentrates on Thomas Gainsborough's contemporaries and includes works by famous artists (J.M. W. Turner, Paul Sandby, J.R. Cozens, Thomas Rowlandson, Francis Towne), as well as items by important forerunners, lesser known practitioners, and amateurs of varying skill. The selection is thematic with an emphasis on topography beginning in East Anglia and moving outwards to London across the English Channel to mainland Europe, and then over the oceans to America, India and China. Watercolours are one of the chief glories of British art and the collecting and connoisseurship of them mark one of the highpoints in British taste. The skill of the artists and the range of subject matter on display in this exhibition will give considerable visual pleasure while at the same time providing fascinating insights into British eighteenth-century society. St Elizabeth Hospice’s Friends Group is being re-launched in Hadleigh The Friends Group of St Elizabeth Hospice in Hadleigh is being relaunched and is looking for new members. Friends groups are made up of supporters who get together to meet like-minded people, learn new skills and make a big difference to the local community by organising fundraising events and supporting the Hospice’s work. Community fundraiser Emily Sheridan said: “Friends groups are great for individuals who want to support the Hospice but not on their own. The groups can be as formal or informal as the people involved wish and you can choose how much time you commit, but all funds raised really help us to continue to provide our services free of charge.” St Elizabeth Hospice’s services cost £8.7 million a year to run, with almost three quarters of that figure coming from the local community. Bildeston Primary School News We have had such an exciting and busy term so far. Our Diamond Jubilee teaparty was enjoyed by the whole school, the weather stayed fine for most of the afternoon allowing a tree to be planted just inside the school gate by the youngest and oldest child. Everyone entered into the spirit of the day by wearing red white and blue clothes.The band played "God Save the Queen", the children sang and waved their flags and the food that was baked by the children was eagerly consumed at an outdoor picnic. As we write we are all looking forward to our special Olympic style sports day and are keeping our fingers crossed for a fine day on the 25th June. We will perform part of the Big Dance routine that got us a place in the Guiness book of records and have our very own Bildeston Primary school Opening Ceremony including the Olympic Oath, poetry, writing and dance from the children, traditional sports plus an afternoon of games. It will be another event to remember! Our special thanks to Ella Brooker, a parent and govenor for all her hard work.We are looking forward to our annual school fete run by the ever hard working PTFA, on Saturday 30th June 11am-2pm. we appreciate all the effort that goes into this and thank them for the money they raise.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) are once again running their highly successful Big Summer Declutter event at Trinity Park Showground in Ipswich. The giant car boot sale will take place between 7am and 1pm on Sunday 29 July giving people the chance to clear out all the things they no longer need, while raising funds for a vital charity. The event is unique in that any unsold goods on the day can be left to be recycled or sold in our charity shops around the region. So you really can de-clutter with confidence! A fantastic day out for all the family, the event will cater for up to 1,000 carboots and 5,000 members of the public are expected. In addition, there are various trade stands and catering concessions to keep visitors refreshed. Find it by the footpath! A Solitary Wasp Solitary Wasps are a very large group of insects with a wide variety of specialised lifestyles. Some attack plants, others living insects, with each species doing it in a unique way. Many are very small and are seldom seen: it is the results of their “work” that you will be most familiar with. What are these wasps – what will I see? Rose-Gall wasps (normally Diplolesis rosae) these are the cause of the “mossy” outgrowths that appear on rose bushes (See photo) These appear in response to a very small wasp laying her eggs into the terminal leaf buds (the one at the very tip of a twig) during the spring. She injects several eggs into the bud and then a very strange thing happens – the bush responds with a defence mechanism that helps the wasp! After about a week the eggs hatch, and the hatchlings start to exude a material (presumably a hormone) which causes the bush to isolate each grub into a walled cell (thus creating a home for it) and then surrounding that with other cells containing a nutritious food supply. This is the start of the “pin-cushion” that we have all seen in the hedgerows. As the grub consumes these food-cells an even stranger thing happens! The bush responds with the production of more food cells, thus enlarging the gall. It even provides the grub with protection from predatory birds with the “mossy” out-growths you can see in the photograph The situation is not completely safe though, because another even smaller Wasp recognises the growth as containing a food supply for her own young, and lays her eggs on the outside of the gall. When hatched, these grubs bore into the gall with a view to using the original occupant as food (not very friendly that) As the gall enlarges it’s colour changes from the initial green through red to brown, until in the Autumn it dies and dries out to a very “corky” material, providing very useful frost protection for the occupant. The grubs don’t go anywhere - just remain in this protective jacket for almost a year - until the following May when they emerge as adults. The insect favours bushes that are under stress and I figure that the one in the Photo (Rosa Canina or Dog-Rose) – being in a very dry area - is having trouble getting enough water The adults are something that you seldom see. They’re no more than 4-5 millimetres long, are orange/chestnut brown and black, but without the stripes of the “yellowjackets” A large number of the females are able to produce viable offspring without being mated! (They’re Parthenogenic) This is the result of the immature grubs becoming infected with bacteria (Wobachia) whilst inside the gall. This organism destroys the males and changes the female’s reproductive organs: only the grubs who escape infection will emerge as “proper” males and females the following year. It’s worse than anything we humans can imagine, the chances of any individual insect avoiding infection is no better than 1 in 20 (worse than the black-death of 500 years ago). This “one-parent” reproduction strategy has undoubtedly developed due to the shortfall in the male population, the disadvantage is that all the offspring will be exact “clones” of the mother – she will pass on any genetic deformities she may have. The time the insects remain at the grub (larval) stage is another “hurdle” the insect has overcome; it means that they can only produce a single generation per year. Compare that with things like Greenfly which are able to produce a new generation every few days and you’ll see what I mean. Mick T

Definitely. Generally speaking, crime rates have fallen in Suffolk over the last few years, and it is no coincidence that this has happened as the Safer Neighbourhood Teams become more and more involved with different sections of the community. I take great pride in building and maintaining local relationships and I feel that this has been the contributing factor in the team’s success. We Police by consent in Suffolk, and in Hadleigh the local residents like continuity. They like to see the same faces and they are willing to talk to the right people if the effort is made to engage with them. I work hard because I enjoy my job. It would be a boring life for me if I wasn’t out and about meeting new people. I think we all have a role to play in making the Town a safer place, but I can’t get the message across without talking to people. What is the funniest thing that has happened whilst on duty? I remember working a night shift a year or two back with a very good friend of mine, PC Wayne Souza. We had been out patrolling and targeting various individuals before returning back to the Station at around
3am. Unusually the Station was in darkness. We walked through the back door and along the corridor. As we turned the corner, Wayne let out a shout of “Get Back” as he saw an intruder lurking in the darkness coming towards us. Instinctively I drew my PAVA spray ready to spray the brave individual who decided to burgle our Police Station as Wayne leapt forward to restrain the person. We were like coiled springs, ready for action. Sadly for us, we were also chasing our own shadows as the intruder turned out to be Wayne’s reflection in the glass of the closed door. He had quite a lump on his head after hitting the glass with a thud! Do you think ‘The Porch Project’ has been a great success? Yes. Those who know me will tell you that I am a big believer in the project and think that the work that they do has helped so many young people grow into young adults. Hadleigh for a long time could not cater for young people, and it has been so long since East House closed its doors. The Revd. Martin Thrower, Craig Hutton and the rest of the team work tirelessly to give the young people in this town a safe place to go and to give them the opportunity to develop into responsible young adults. Friday nights used to be our busiest nights with youth nuisance and anti-social behaviour, but now we generally have no reports of this nature. I would urge readers to visit the Porch or contact the Dean to find out exactly what is on offer as they are in the process of introducing a new sports academy and education suite

However, I have also seen great results from work that I have done. I have made a difference in peoples lives and that has given me the greatest satisfaction of all. I could not imagine doing any other job, and becoming a Police Officer is the best professional decision that I have made. Whilst it is well publicised that pay and conditions are constantly under review, this isn’t a career that you should do for the financial rewards. You should consider a career in the Police because you want to make a difference. What do you enjoy doing on your days off? I try to keep active when I am not at work. I regularly go to the gym, and build in some middle distance running with this. I walk about 4 miles a day with my dog, Sonny, and play a bit of golf (badly!). I get very few weekends off work, but when I do I like to go out for meals with my wife, Sian or pop to the pub for a quiet pint. Football is a big passion of mine, and some of you may remember the days when I played in goal for Hadleigh United. These days I save my gloves for special occasions, but still enjoy watching as much as possible. I am a Wolverhampton Wanderers fan, and during the season I take great pleasure in listening to the games on the Internet with my Mum and Dad. Whilst last season was depressing, I am looking forward to a more positive campaign next season with the added bonus of a trip to Portman Road! Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust There are some very generous individuals and organisations in and around Hadleigh and Boxford who, over the years, have given sums of money to the Hadleigh Health Centre, and Boxford Mill Surgery. The British Medical Association Guidance to GPs is clear that any gifts must not be seen to benefit GPs individually and that for transparency it is prudent to set up a charity to give public accountability. It was for this purpose that in 1996 the Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust was registered as a charity with the object of approving health care in the local area. Since 1996 the trustees of the Charity, after meeting regularly with representatives of Dr Flather & Partners, have allocated funds to a number of individuals and projects such as:• Supporting the Hadleigh Community Transport Group Purchase of a defibrillator and ECG machines • Supporting various local organisations such as Success After Stroke and Hadleigh St John Ambulance • Supporting various individuals on health related training courses • Supporting various individuals with travelling expenses for medical treatment • Supporting the running costs of the pagers (and more recently mobile phones and sat nav) used by the district nurses. • The purchase of various pieces of non standard medical equipment that is used both within the Health Centre and the surrounding area. Two Choirs In Harmony On Saturday 14th July the Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir and the Ipswich Co-op Ladies Choir are performing a concert at St John the Baptist Church, Cauldwell Hall Road, Ipswich commencing at 7.30pm. The concert will include a wide variety of songs, some with a patriotic theme. Proceeds from the concert are being shared equally between the East Anglian Air Ambulance and East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. Assington Farmers’ Market, From Field to Plate Just over a year ago Assington Farmers Market was launched and already it has proved to be a firm favourite on the Farmers’ Market circuit with people travelling from Hadleigh, Ipswich, Colchester and surrounding areas on the second Sunday of every month to fill their shopping bags with fresh, local produce and enjoy a family day out. Everything that is available at the market comes from within a 30 mile radius of the village with much of it travelling no further than a few hundred yards! The pork comes from down the road, the apple juice comes from over the lane and beautiful gifts & accessories are made by the lady who lives opposite the pub – it is, literally, a ‘local’ market! Some of the other produce available includes fresh fruit & vegetables, local bread, beef, pork and game, home baked cakes & pies, local eggs, home produced jams, pates & chutneys, fresh herbs, local sausages, smoked cheese, salami & olives, real ales & a lovely selection of plants & flowers. Many visitors to the market make a morning of it and spend time feeding the farm animals, having lunch at the tearooms or a picnic by the lake and taking a stroll on the nearby stunning Arger Fen. At a Farmers’ Market you know where the food is from, you can talk to the person who grew it, roasted it, chopped it or brewed it and find out more about the processes involved – there are no hidden surprises. Going to a good market is a really positive experience, it has an extra dimension that trips to the supermarket totally lack and it can be part of a fantastic family day out. News from Miss Lesley’s School Of Performing Arts! Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts celebrated its very first birthday in May! The school has gone from strength to strength since its opening and now has over 45 students ranging in age from as young as 4 through to 16 years. The school teaches children all aspects of performing arts including dance, singing and drama along with other elements such as confidence building and character development – with a huge emphasis on FUN! Miss Lesley, Principal of the school is a qualified performing arts teacher who herself attended the famous Italia Conti school in London. She has performed in many west end musicals and TV shows such as Grange Hill and Play School – so is able to pass on her knowledge and unique experience to local children in Bildeston, Hadleigh and the surrounding area. The school is also closely linked to C.H.A.P.S - Bildeston’s amateur drama group, who put on an annual pantomime where the pupils of the school are able to take part and gain valuable experience of a full production playing to packed audiences over several nights. The school has also been involved in a number of local community/school events – showcasing various singing and dance routines and most recently put on a show for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in Monks Eleigh which had a 1940’s theme! The pupils are looking forward to their first school outing to see the musical Grease at the Regent Theatre, Ipswich in September. The pupils have been learning songs and routines from the show and will definitely be doing the hand-jive at the finale! In addition to the normal school activity, Miss Lesley also offers wedding choreography – which enables newlyweds to take to the floor with confidence on their first dance as husband and wife – often with a very unexpected and surprising routine for their guests! Hadleigh U3A At our June monthly meeting, we had a welcome return visit from international traveller and accomplished photographer Chris Parfitt, whose talk on this occasion was entitled “Chile - the long, thin country”. Chris provided a rare treat with his travel photographs – and his vivid visual depictions of its flora and fauna. Whilst Chile is 2500 miles in length it is only 110 miles in width, bordered by the Andes rising up as far as 26,000 feet on one side, which forms a barrier with its neighbour Argentina, and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The terrain varies from the heat of the desert in the north, parts of which have not seen rainfall for 400 years, to near Antarctic conditions in the South. Chris showed us the Llamas in the north and the Penguins in the south, with stunning landscapes in between. This together with tales of the stresses and strains of being a traveller in what is a sometimes inhospitable terrain while also fitting in amusing anecdotes of a wine tasting – apparently the U.K. is the largest market for Chilean wine - made a superb afternoons entertainment much appreciated by the large U3A audience. Our next meeting will be our annual Summer Party, on July 9th in the Guildhall and Garden. The guest speaker will be the celebrated raconteur Charlie Haylock, who will be entertaining us on the theme of “Talking Suffolk” Other events organized for the coming weeks will take groups of members by coach to visit the Bure Valley Steam Railway, with a boat trip on the Broads, and to the Saville Garden near Windsor, including a cruise on the Thames with a cream tea aboard. A coach-load of members will also be cheering on the Olympic Torch Relay on Ipswich waterfront on the day. Further outings to theatres, both local and in London, for operatic, orchestral and Old Time Music Hall performances will follow. Claire climbs Ben Nevis for charity On the 22nd of May my wife Claire along with 24 others went on a challenge called Army Mums versus Ben Nevis in aid of Help For Heroes, they all had a wonderful day, even though there was about six foot of snow on the summit, they all made it to the top apart from one. Claire raised about £600, and the group raised round about £6000 and rising which is some very needed funds. We would just like to thank everyone that sponsored us. Anthony Quinn

Recent Road Traffic Accident on the A1071 I'd just like to write and give an update on my son Lewis who was involved in an RTA on the A1071 on the 18th May. Firstly I'd like to say it was nothing more than an accident, Lewis was crossing the road with friends and didn't see the van and the van driver didn't see Lewis but wasn't at fault as I say it was an accident and unfortunately happened. Lewis had to have his leg amputated below the left knee but this is not the tragedy it at first appears as Lewis is a very strong character who has repeatedly amazed the medical staff in Addenbrookes hospital. We as a family have grasped the positive side of the incident as it could have been a lot worse in many respects and we could have lost him that day.We are sure within a short period of time Lewis will have a prosthetic limb fitted and literally be back on his feet. I'd like to thank the Police on scene that day who were extremely professional, the paramedics,the Essex air ambulance and the staff of Addenbrookes hospital. I'd also like to say a special thank you to Hadleigh Football Club especially Ben Oakes and Darren Harvey who have offered incredible support at this time and are a credit to the town for the commitment they show to the football club. As a serving soldier living in Hadleigh I'd like to thank the local community for your support at this time, Hadleigh is a great town and you should all be proud of it. So if you see a little boy with blond hair in a wheelchair don't be afraid to say hello because if he has anything to do with it he won't be in the chair for long. Regards Will Cullen

Hadleigh High Ofsted Report On the 21st and 22nd May 2012 Hadleigh High School was inspected by Ofsted under the new framework for inspections introduced in January this year. Our school has received a very positive Ofsted report following its recent inspection. Ofsted agree with the academy that it has made good progress since its last visit and has the capacity to be an outstanding school. The report comments upon the good progress made by pupils in lessons throughout the school year which is the result of high quality teaching that is innovative and engaging. Ofsted noted that the academy’s clear focus on high quality teaching and learning has been one of the main elements in the change in culture that has taken place in the school over the last two years. The drive to have more active engagement in learning through paired and group work has been successful, as Hadleigh pupils see tackling challenging activities collaboratively as the norm. We want our pupils to have the very best educational opportunities enabling them to have the skills and attributes required to be highly successful, happy, confident and creative learners who will be able to cope with the opportunities and challenges which will face them as young adults. The Ofsted inspection has been a valuable means of testing how far we have travelled so far in our aim to provide an outstanding education for our young people. We are pleased that the inspectors have identified that we have a relentless focus on further improving our practice and that we expect the very best from and for our pupils as well as encouraging our pupils to develop the social skills which will enable them to be valued members of any team. The inspection team were also impressed by the quality of the relationships they observed within the academy. They noted that pupils value the extensive care and support that they receive from staff, particularly through additional support and extra-curricular activities. The unusually high quality of these relationships ensures children enjoy their education. This inspection will be used by the school as a progress check. It highlights the areas where we are progressing well as well as areas where we need to develop further. We are not complacent and remain resolutely committed to providing the very best learning opportunities for our pupils so that they are able to reach their full potential and improve their life chances. We will continue to further improve our work and address the priorities we and Ofsted have identified. The Olympic Spirit at Hadleigh On Wednesday we were very fortunate to be visited by Derek Redmond – the world class athlete. Many of us will recall his many successes in the 400 metre sprint. We will also remember the time at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona when he tore his hamstring in the 400 metres semi-final but fought through the pain and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete Hadleigh High Year 10 Sports Prefects had a full lap of the track as the crowd gave the opportunity to meet Derek Redmond on his visit to the school. him a standing ovation. Derek Redmond posed for photographs with all pupils, and gave 2 inspirational assemblies. In addition we also had a visit from Emily Scott a member of the GB Women’s Rugby Team. Emily conducted training sessions with pupils in Years 9 and 10 - putting pupils through their paces! Hosting the Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Many of our pupils will enjoy watching the games and seeing internationally renowned sports people perform to an exceptionally high standard. As well as enjoying all the sport on offer it has been a wonderful opportunity for pupils to reflect on the Olympic and Paralympic values in the work they have undertaken over the last few months. The values include: • respect – fair play; knowing one’s own limits; and taking care of one’s health and the environment • excellence – how to give the best of oneself, on the field of play or in life; taking part; and progressing according to one’s own objectives • friendship – how, through sport, to understand each other despite any differences • courage – how to embrace challenge • determination – how to persevere even when the task is difficult • inspiration – how we model admirable positive behaviours in the challenges we undertake • equality – how all members of our community have a positive and worthwhile contribution to make All these values can be applied to how we work, how we learn and how we live. Work Experience From Monday 25th June, to Friday 6th July, pupils will be taking part in Work Experience. Work Experience is a great opportunity for all pupils to experience a working environment and develop key skills. Whether they are working in media, or working in construction, it gives students the chance to use their initiative, begin to make decisions of their own and work professionally with other people. Students will have to compile a detailed log of their experiences during this fortnight, which will give them a sense of reflection and give them a chance to show what new things they have learnt. Production This year’s production, which has been hugely anticipated, has finally been revealed to be the wonderful musical of ‘Guys and Dolls’. A big congratulation to everyone who went through the auditions process, and successfully received the role they wanted! This year, the drama department have decided to get a head start and begin rehearsals early. Rehearsals are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and there is much hard work and commitment put in by everyone involved. News from the PE Department • Athletics Over the past month each year group has come together to produce a girls’ and boys’ team for the athletics at the Royal Hospital School. Year 7s produced an excellent performance and got both their girls’ and boys’ team to the final at Northgate High School. Another brilliant performance by the Year 8 girls meant that they also got to the final and their position was 6th overall in the whole of South Suffolk. Finally the Year 10 boys and girls reached the final where the boys’ team won meaning that they were the best athletic team in the whole of South of Suffolk; an amazing performance boys- well done! A huge well done to every performer who represented the school; your enthusiasm in the sport was brilliant. • Sports Prefects Congratulations to the current Year 10s who were successful in their bid to become a sports Prefect; their role will carry on through to Year 11 as well. The new prefects are: Callum Bentley, Tom Cowley, Jasmine Hayward, Georgia Howard, Lewis Kempson, Frankie King, Becca Mann, Dom Manthorpe, Tommy Newbigging, Ben Olive, Jazmin Print and Jordan Robinson. The P.E. department also allocates the role of Junior Sport Prefects which the current Year 9s have applied for. A big well done to those who have been successful in their application; many activities will be run with their help over the next year. The new junior sport prefects are: Sam Bevan, Sam Chapman, Cal Dawson, Hannah Daniels, Josh Dews, Seth Philbedge, Alister Grant, Hollie Gregg, Rob Halls, Grace Knock, Annabel MacFarlen and Ruby Shepperson. • Primary School Tennis Festival On Friday 15th June, a Tennis festival took place for the Year 3 and 4s of the schools in and around Hadleigh. It was help run by the Junior Sport Prefects and was very successful. The overall winners were Hadleigh Blue who played amazingly as well as the other teams. A big well done to everyone who took part and to the people who ran the event so smoothly, without them these festivals could not happen. Year 10 South Suffolk Athletics Team Championships Well done to all of the Year 10 students who competed for Hadleigh High in the South Suffolk Athletics Team Championships at Northgate on Wednesday 30th May. It was great to see our students taking part at such a high level and embracing the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect throughout the evening. Well done to those who achieved personal bests. Congratulations to the boys team who won their overall event. Library News On Thursday 16th June the Library Book Club members were invited to attend the CILIP Carnegie Book Awards event at East Bergholt High School. The Carnegie Medal is awarded by children’s librarians for an outstanding book for children and young people. Our book club members have been ‘shadowing’ the 8 books shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. This year, an estimated 90,000 pupils took part in shadowing groups across the UK. Pupils from Hadleigh, East Bergholt and Holbrook voted for their favourite book based on its content, cover and blurb. After a lively debate, the winning book voted for by the pupils was ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day at East Bergholt High School and especially enjoyed interacting with the pupils from other schools. Enrichment This July, the whole school will be getting involved in Enrichment again! Year 7s will be offered a chance to go on a trip to Danbury, Year 8s will be going to St Omer for the first week, and will be spending 3 days performing in Combined Arts, Year 9s will either be going to the Ardéche region of France or Thorpe Woodlands, and Year 10s will be, as mentioned earlier, going on Work Experience. Charity Begins at Animal Home
It was smiles all round when fund raisers posed for photos recently to celebrate their separate achievements. The group's combined efforts raised £645 for Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare in Stoke Road, Leavenheath. Hadleigh builder, Graham Clemson has netted £150 so far after taking part in a London to Paris cycle ride. Cycling on the "wrong" side of the road in unfamiliar territory made the journey challenging mentally as well as physically. Fortunately friends were close by in a back up vehicle which shadowed the riders all the way. Graham hopes to take part in another continental journey next year to raise money for SESAW. Boxford school girl Annabel Harris and mum Kay, together with Louise and Lucy Watling and their mother, Jo, raised £295 by walking from Sudbury to Long Melford and back along the old railway track. The total included £38 donated by passers-by along the footpath. Sarah Pope who works at Tesco in Sudbury collected £200 from colleagues and customers after completing the Sudbury Fun Run. Pleased with her achievement, Sarah hopes to raise even more money when she enters again next year.

Jerry’s Diary Redkites continued to be seen during the last days of May. Matt Garnham saw 1 or 2 birds over Whatfield, 3 were seen flying over Groton Wood and another that was being mobbed by a pair of Buzzards over Raydon Woods. I still haven’t seen a Redkite myself this year. More Cuckoos were heard calling from Bullocky Fen, Layham pit, Fen Grove Wood and Shelley, where a local resident told me that he has heard more Cuckoos than last year. I didn’t hear anymore Cuckoos after the 20th May. The first Spotted Flycatchers were on the 17th May at Cosford Bridge and Aldham Churchyard, and more at Holbecks Park on the 25th. Turtle Doves were seen in good numbers at the end of May, 7 were seen at Layham pit 29th May, another was heard purring at Hill Farm. Turtle Doves are closely linked to the wild plant Fumitory, which is its main food source. The seeds from this and other weeds make up its diet so don’t use weed killer or cut Sam Mitchell took this photo of a down any weeds if there are Turtle Dove in his garden Turtle Doves nearby. The first week of June saw more Turtle Doves being seen, a pair were at Valley Lane Farm, Hadleigh and another pair at Peyton Hall Farm in Hadleigh on the 6th. The photo taken by Sam Mitchell of a Turtle Dove in his garden is remarkable in that Sam’s garden is in Yeoman Crescent which is in the middle of Hadleigh. I do remember seeing Turtle Dove’s breeding in scrub where the now Edwin Panks estate is also on Cocks Fields behind East House, though this was over 20 years ago! The jingling song of the Corn Bunting, was heard coming from a wheat field along Pondhall Road on 9th June. The weather during the first few days of June was much the same as May, chilly, heavy persistent rain and showers. The 8th saw very windy conditions, then back to more rain from the 11th June. Tawny Owls have had a good year judging by the number of young birds I have seen in recent days. Another good bird species for the Layham area was a Nightjar, seen at the quarry on 16th May. Mr Kilshaw spotted the Nightjar whilst surveying the quarry for newts. He also heard the bird churring for a short while. Nightjars become most active from dusk when night flying insects come out, such as moths which are a rich food source for the Nightjar. It has been 25 years since I have heard a Nightjar in this area, once at Wolves Wood and also at the Fuzz, beside the Railway Walk. These birds were just passing through. The Nightingale survey was, at times, not that easy because of the bad weather that we had in May, but I found 26+ singing from the three tetrads (sites) that I was given to survey. Fifteen from Layham pits, six on the Fuzz and 5 from Broom Hill Hadleigh. I also heard several more at other sites nearby, these were classed as casual records. very influenced by the teacher of gardening Mr Keith Offord. Keith was a founder member of the H.&D. G. Club and (although Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been unable to verify the fact) was himself trained at the R.H.S. He built up an immaculate area of garden, greenhouses etc, to give an allround grounding (sorry about the pun) to the children and abviously inspired at least one person to go into horticulture as a full-time profession. From this start she went around picking up experience and teaching from everywhere she could so has rubbed shoulders with a good few of the best known gardeners. In the end she cut out her intention of travelling around the globe to gain a more diverse knowledge of the subject and accepted a marriage proposal instead! This though has lead to her becoming a well known garden designer, as well as creating, with the help of her husband a 3/4 acre garden of great beauty and diversity and relying on her husbands wonderful metal earth restraints to contain earth seats, among other things. She continues to work at a feverish pitch and has somehow managed to squeeze in two lovely daughters to the unrelenting toil of keeping the garden so it is always open on Fridays to the public and in an immacuculate condition. How she manages all that and has become an amazing plants woman as well, heaven only knows. How is it possible to work in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fast laneâ&#x20AC;? to the extent she does I simply donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know but â&#x20AC;&#x153;full steam aheadâ&#x20AC;? seems to be her mantra and coming to talk to us on June 11th was no exception. She arrived with nothing more than a large basket of cuttings and a folio of pictures and kept us enraptured for well over an hour, talking non stop about the various plant samples she bought with her; dropping off names I cannot even pronounce , at break-neck speed and then chatted for half an hour to members before departing back to Rushbrooke, bed, and alarm clock for 3am all in order to catch a flight to France - well as I said â&#x20AC;&#x153;what a girlâ&#x20AC;? News from the Garden Personal Thoughts This month my thoughts are still about weeds. Some years ago I had a little rant about bitter cress, which is a little weed which flowers early and has exploding seed pods to help it spread itself about. At the moment there are two other weeds that are being a particular nuisance. The first is horsetail (equisetum arvense). This is an ancient plant which has a deep root system, a hard skin, and can regrow from small bits of root. There was a bit of root under my greenhouse when I built it 30 odd years ago, and I have had bits of it coming up in my greenhouse ever since, and controlled it by pulling it up whenever I see it. This year it has suddenly appeared under the patio by the greenhouse, and I am going to have to try and control it with weed killer. The problem is getting the weed killer into the weed. One contact has suggested injecting the weed killer into the stems with a hypodermic syringe, but this is probably illegal. I am going to try and crush the stems before spraying. The second weed is cleavers (gallium aparine). This produces lots of stems which scramble over surrounding plants. Children love this weed because the stems and seeds will stick to clothing, and this is one way in which this weed spreads around. I have had this weed in the hedge for years, but this year it has gone mad. I think the reason for this is this years strange weather pattern. If so this is probably just a one year nuisance problem. In 1991 my wife and I visited Keukenhof Gardens in Holland we particularly impressed by a blue "footpath" created using grape hyacinths (muscari). (See picture). We ignored the fact that the garden is replanted annually, and decided to use them in a circle around an apple tree. They are now effectively a weed, and I am going to have to clear the bed and start again. Not all varieties of muscari are as invasive as muscari armeniacum varieties. Muscari latifolium, and commutatum are better. The National collection of muscari is held by Richard Hobbs in Norfolk. Another lovely plant was installed around another apple tree, and has proved difficult to control. This one is camassia leichtlinii, a bulb flowering in June or July. The problem is that the bulbs work themselves quite deep, and produce offsets. One can pull out the bulbs and leave the offsets behind to grow on and reappear. This is very close to our average monthly rainfall. This useful rainfall brought the 3 month figure up to 189.8 mm (5.9") which is close to average rainfall. The total rainfall for the first 5 months of the year is 255 mm (10"), and this is twice as much as we had in the first 5 months of 2011. In May the maximum temperature was 27 Cel (81F). The minimum was 3 Cel (37F), both of which are typical for the month. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 13 Cel (55F). Hints By July if you grow vegetables you should be enjoying the fruits of your labour. All the traditional crops will have been sown, but now is the right time to sow some of the Chinese vegetables like Chinese cabbage, and mizuna. These are two that I like, but there a number of others. Why not experiment? This month keep your secateurs with you as you inspect your garden and systematically dead head flowers as they go over. In many cases you will be rewarded by more flowers. July is a good month for cutting and drying herbs and lavender for winter use. The lavender should be cut just before the flowers are fully open. It is also a good month for lifting and dividing Irises that have flowered. Select the biggest single rhizomes for replanting, and cut half of the leaves off. Do not plant too deeply. The tops of the rhizomes should be above the soil. The old garden books suggest mid July as the time to start spraying potatoes against blight. It also affects tomatoes so be vigilant. Sweet Success for Pudding-Themed Fundraiser Local fundraisers are today raising a glass to the ‘sweet success’ of their charity fundraising, after collecting over £740.00 for charity that supports profoundly deaf people. Hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, based at Upper Brook Street, in Ipswich, decided to put their fundraising experience together with the dessert making skills of the culinary students at New Suffolk College, to create an indulgence evening to remember. Over 80 guests packed into the Shelleys Restaurant, at the College, in Ipswich and were treated to a delicious main course, featuring stuffed chicken, followed all they could eat from an array of delicious homemade desserts. Profiteroles, chocolate brownies, treacle tart, tiramisu and banana cake were just a selection of what was on offer to try, topped with lashings of cream and custard. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre said, “This event has been a tremendous success. Our pudding eating champion sampled a whopping 26 desserts – what a way to raise money for charity! We will all probably have to go on diets for the next 2 weeks, but that’s a small price to pay for the amazing amount of money we have raised”. “All the monies will be donated to our chosen charity Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. We have already managed to raise £20,000 through various events, including 4 other pudding club events, and have sponsored 2 dogs who have been placed with deaf recipients in Suffolk”. Charity celebrates 40 years of saving lives A medical charity that’s saved thousands of lives in Suffolk and helped countless other casualties in their hour of need is celebrating its 40th anniversary by extending the range of clinicians it works with. The Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) was set up in May 1972 when a group of General Practitioners got together to volunteer their services at the scene of serious incidents locally to support the ambulance service. Doctors would attend road accidents and other emergencies – often out of hours - to provide enhanced care to help stabilise a patient before they were transferred to hospital. Now the service has grown to also include doctors from Accident and Emergency units, anaesthetists and, recently, critical care paramedics from the ambulance service have also joined. All of them give up their time to attend an incident whenever they are needed. The charity’s Chairman Dr Jeremy Mauger who is based at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds said: “The work of SARS is as vital today as it was 40 years ago. In fact with the way healthcare has improved and developed over the years it’s probably more so. I’m delighted that the organisation is now working with volunteer critical care paramedics who will bring additional skills and widen our network to allow us to continue to cover Suffolk and neighbouring areas. “The treatment our clinicians can give a patient at the scene, alongside our ambulance service colleagues, can make all the difference to their chances of survival.” SARS is funded entirely by public donations and relies on charity fundraising for the resources and training it needs. The clinicians carry additional equipment and drugs over and above those available to regular ambulance crews. The Medical Director of the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust, Pam Chrispin, is also a volunteer for the charity. She commented: “SARS provides a fantastic service to the people of Suffolk and beyond, and I feel very privileged to have served as a volunteer with them myself since 2006. “The Ambulance Service is proud to have worked with such an excellent partner since 1972, and we are grateful for the ongoing commitment to saving lives in the local community. All SARS volunteers bring a level of expertise and care to patients that complements and supports the Ambulance Service.” Dr Mauger added: “SARS receives no funding from the government and it’s the generosity of people in Suffolk that has allowed our work to continue for 40 years. The weather conditions had been rough pre-race with rain and high winds. Only about 300 runners competed compared with 500 at Kirton the previous week. Hadleigh Hares had six brave runners turn up on the night to attempt the challenging two lap five mile course. Results: Andrew Stewart 41.28, Trudy Avis 41.48, Nikki Vince 43.13, Carol Nokes 49.02, Nancy Hammond 51.41, Deborah Stewart 54.00. Elizabeth Stewart and Ewan Baxter represented the Hares in the junior race. Friday Five races – Kirton – 1st June Hadleigh Hares had a great turn out with 18 runners taking part in the second race of the 'Friday 5 series' hosted by Felixstowe Road Runners. There were more than 500 runners start the race. The weather conditions were on the cool side but ideal for racing as there was no wind. The course was a flat five miles and many of the Hares achieved a PB. Results: John Scaife 28.26, David Willer 29.21 (1st junior), Carlos Catalan 29.23, Adam Johnson 30.49, Matt Hunter 31.52, Steve Cox 33.41, Tim Ryder 34.50, Simon Fenn 35.19, John Norman 36.28, Kate Thomas 36.44, Trudy Avis 37.44, Nikki Vince 38.22, Graham Rankin 38.29, Andrew Stewart 39.00, Helen Norman 43.32, Carol Nokes 45.45, Deborah Stewart 49.31. Elizabeth Stewart represented the Hares in the Junior Fun run. Braintree Sprint Triathlon – 10th June Representing the Hares were Andrew Stewart, Steve Bowen, Doug Grimwade, Richard Hanley, Ollie Hanley and Neil Packer. Grimwade and Hanley were neck and neck in the swim but Hanley pulled away on the bike and had a commanding two minute lead over Grimwade by the time they got to the run leg. Grimwade just pipped Hanley on the run but couldn't claw back enough time to make a real difference to the results. A jubilant Hanley finished in a magnificent 5th place overall, whilst a dejected Grimwade came in 15th. Packer retained his 'fastest Hare in the pool' title and put in an excellent bike leg to stay in contention with Grimwade, but despite a valiant run he slipped back to finish in 26th place. Bowen, in an early attempt to pick up the Hares’ annual 'Worst Navigation' award managed to do two extra lengths of the pool before he was stopped by officials and sent on his way. He rallied magnificently, putting in solid bike and run legs to finish 54th overall. Just behind Bowen was the ever improving Stewart whose excellent performance saw him finish in 78th place. Ollie Hanley, Richard's 17 year-old son, in only his second race, was only just behind the senior Hares and his excellent performance earnt him the Junior age group win and a pair of crystal champagne glasses. Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline By the time you are reading this it will be only a matter of days until the children arrive……time flies so quickly, it doesn’t seem that long ago that we were saying goodbye to the last group! Having been to Belarus and met with the 20 children who will be arriving on July 8th we have now been able to post photographs of them on the board which is displayed outside our Charity Shop in Needham, (adjacent to the Rampant horse Public house). Thank you to everyone who has contributed clothing and medicines to the collection we are making to send home with the children and also to those of you who have so generously made financial donations. Even in these hard economic times it is amazing and very touching to see how many of you care about these children and do what you can to help our group. One of the things we do when we go to Belarus to meet the parents of the children is to explain to them how the preparations are made prior to the group arriving. Without exception they are amazed that people give things for children they do not know, in Belarus there is no such thing as a Charity or a Charity shop and to receive gifts of clothing, shoes, medicines, things which are highly valued, from complete strangers, is virtually unheard of, such is the environment they live in. We are still looking for donations of Buckets and Spades for the Beach and also second hand trainers in sizes 13 to 2, if you can help we would be extremely grateful. Lastly, one of the first things we do when the children arrive is to have a “Clothing Party” where we distribute all of the clothes that have been donated for the children. This year we are hoping to be able to hang some of the clothes as we have some clothes rails to use but what we will need are coat hangers. If you have any spare hangers you can donate we would be grateful if these could either be dropped into the Charity shop marked for my attention or please do call me if you would like me to arrange collection from you. Rugby Club Achievements Recognised by the RFU At the recent end of season Suffolk and Eastern Counties Rugby Football Union Annual Dinner, local club Hadleigh RFC were recognised for their achievements both on and off the playing field. Club coach Adam Miles and 1st XV captain Charlie Warburton, collected the Eastern Counties Division 2 Championship Trophy from Eastern Counties RFU president Martin Peacock. While later in the evening a special RFU Club Accreditation Award was accepted by Club Chairman Alan Murray and President John Halls on behalf of the club. Hadleigh Rugby Club is one of the few clubs in Suffolk to have achieved this prestigious award for the level of work carried out in implementing the high standards of playing, coaching and administration at Senior, Youth and Mini rugby levels. The Youth season drew to a conclusion with an adventurous and challenging tour by 70 players in the U-12, U-13 and U-14 teams who competed in the South West England Youth Rugby Festival held at Barnstaple, Devon. Opponents such as Bath, Gloucester and Saracens did not diminish the spirit of the boys from Suffolk with the U-12 team reaching the Plate Final only to lose to Barnstaple. The boys can be proud of their rugby achievements at the festival and during the season and look to developing even further in the season ahead. This comes at the end of the most successful season that the club has had in many years and starts the campaign to attract more playing members for the 2012 – 2013 season. Hadleigh start the season with 1st XV competing in the Eastern Counties Division 1 and the 2nd XV playing in the Suffolk merit table for the first time. Training starts at the beginning of July with light Touch Rugby sessions and coach Adam Miles is looking to extend the playing squad to meet the new playing demands.
