The three little pigs learn to build with oak sticks at Orchard Barn The educational programme for the three little pigs continued at Orchard Barn last month. After learning how to construct wolf-puff resistant buildings with straw, a course on how to build with sticks! In this case the sticks were beautiful, sometimes handhewn, lengths of seasoned English oak. The five day course in timber framing using traditional techniques and tools was led onsite at Orchard Barn by expert Rick Lewis, of Suffolk-based Traditional Oak Carpentry. Using only traditional hand tools, the students completed the walls for the side lean-to shed. Despite having no prior formal training, the enthusiastic team dealt with the complexities of putting together large, irregular timbers, and measured and cut various joints appropriate to the age of the main seventeenth century barn. By Friday afternoon the walls were in place, secured into the main barn frame with oak pegs, again hand made on site. The wooden structure sat on flint and brick footing walls to lift them above the wet ground. Before this little “house” is finished to withstand the big bad wolf, it needs roof timbers, roof covering and infills between the timber studs. To complete their studies, the three little pigs could book onto one of the other courses offered at Orchard Barn this year to learn about stone building – Orchard Barn even does lime mortar and flint walling! Nursery rhymes may never be the same again. PS much of this oak came from woodland at Willisham that is being renovated, the rest from SWT woods at Bradfield.

Suffolk West Federation of Women’s Institute Three Valleys Group Meeting President of Polstead WI Chris Cuthbert welcomed members of the nine WIs of the newly formed the Three Valleys (Brett, Stour and Box) Group to their first group meeting held in Nayland Village Hall. WI Adviser Sue Beaven expressed her pleasure at seeing so many members and the opportunities that co operation within this large group afforded. A representative from each WI gave a short account of their institute’s highlights in the past year including details of speakers, outings and fund raising events held to raise money for local charities and Association for Country Women of the World which supports our less fortunate sisters in developing countries. The speaker was Elizabeth C Talbot MRICS Senior Auctioneer, Valuer and Partner in T.W. Gaze of Diss. She started her career in Retford in 1985 then moved to Nottingham and finally to Diss in 1995. Elizabeth explained her role as facilitating acts of business in legal transactions. She described the part body language played and the contribution of technology in the interaction between the Auctioneer and bidders. The people of East Anglia appreciate their heritage, old artefacts’ and rural bygones. A few members brought their treasures for Elizabeth to examine and value. These included examples of Minton pottery a Japanese vase, a hand forged and beaten fire screen, a silver kettle, a sampler of stump embroidery and a Victorian game pie dish. The Competition Diamond Jubilee gave members and opportunity to demonstrate their craft skills. In third place Elmsett and Aldham - in second Leavenheath and the winner Boxford who were presented with a cut glass rose bowl. Polstead WI had prepared and served a feast of home made cakes and savouries which everyone enjoyed before driving home in the rain along Suffolk country lanes.

At our marriage one year ago our friends gave generous gifts of money to support a project on which we had set our hearts. We had previously visited a village of around 150 people in the interior of Fiji and found that they needed a kindergarten for their preschool children. Older children crossed the river on horse-back and then travelled several miles along an unmade road to school. The younger ones were educated in the open air, in Our friends gave the village. generously so that we were able to transfer more than £4,000 to enable building to start. Contacts in a jet boat safari company and the hotel business enabled safe transfer of the money and arranged for the levelling of the site and the construction of the building. This was no simple matter and when we visited again on Leap Year Day, 29th.February we had no idea how far the project had developed. Severe flooding had made the village almost inaccessible for some months and the first site cleared had proved unsuitable. Building materials had to be carried initially behind four wheel drive vehicles, then across the river on rafts and then dragged by quad bikes to the building site. Would the “kindi” be complete on the day of our proposed visit? After an hour’s journey by car and another half hour by jet boat we reached Toga village. There in a prominent position above the village stood a remarkable new building, 12x8 metres, solidly built and decorated for the occasion. We were delighted by what had been achieved. Many ceremonies, speeches, worship and much drinking of kava took place, before we cut the ribbon, unlocked the door and entered their building hand-in-hand with the little children. The ladies had decorated the inside with great multi-coloured swags of fabric. Music and feasting followed, a whale’s tooth was presented, tapa, bark cloth prepared and decorated for the occasion, was given and a roast pig surrounded by taro roots and plantains added to the feast. At the opening of the kindergarten a tropical downpour had driven everyone inside, so the return to the jet boat by means of liquid mud paths needed burly Fijians to keep us upright. Once on the boat another downpour turned to hail stinging us with needles of ice. Finally back at base we were able to order furniture for the kindergarten, astonished that it would be made and ready the following week. We want to thank all our generous friends whose wedding presents made this project possible for the benefit of future generations in this very remote community in the centre of the Fijian jungle. Wendy & David Atkins

A New Service from the River Stour Trust This season The River Stour Trust is providing a new service on Saturdays offering one-way boat trips between both Flatford and Dedham on our electric launch ‘Trusty II’. This is in response to a popular request from people who have walked to Flatford from Dedham and would like to return by boat. This service is in addition to our regular boat trips from Flatford to Fen Bridge and back which we have provided on Sundays, Bank Holidays and Wednesdays in the school summer holidays for many years. We are aware of the aims of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Stour Valley Project to encourage people to visit this beautiful and unique area whilst sustaining an environment unspoilt for future use by generations to come. We hope that our service will enable people to leave their cars at one venue and experience the tranquillity and the wild-life of the river from a different perspective. ‘Trusty II’ is virtually silent and does not pollute the river or cause a bow-wave which would damage the river bank. Our half-hour trips start from Dedham Boathouse Restaurant at 10.15 a.m. and run on a regular timetable throughout the day. The last trip leaves Flatford at 5.00 p.m. The boat holds up to eight passengers and each trip costs £5 for adults, £3 for children and £1 for dogs. We will take less physically able passengers back to their original starting point, but we do not offer a discount on return tickets. The service is also dependent on the weather and river conditions being favourable. This year, from July to September there is also the option of returning by the ‘hopper bus’, which has been in service for the past two years. The River Stour Trust is a registered charity and its aims are to restore and maintain the navigation of the River Stour. All our operators are volunteers and money raised by our boat trips goes to support our aims. We are always looking for new volunteers to train as skippers. No experience is necessary as full training will be given and we are a friendly group who are always willing to help. For further details please contact Dorothy Howe on 0844 800 5018, secretary@riverstourtrust.org, or visit our web-site www.riverstourtrust.org

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard with Jonathan Lambert of Sudbury I write this column hotfoot from a morning at this year’s Hadleigh Show. I wondered around and I was pleased to meet so many of my readers. One did think though that the entrance price of £10 per head was a little steep. I have mentioned before how lucky we are to have various specialists and suppliers on our doorstep. The picture shows me with Jonathan Lambert of Jonathan Lambert Fine Jewellers in Sudbury. Jonathan is able to source almost anything that you may be seeking and is always happy to run his expert eye over pieces that you may have. Jonathan has an excellent pedigree having been the youngest Chairman of the National Association of Goldsmiths and currently being Chairman of the Institute of Registered Valuers. Furthermore Jonathan is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and a Freeman of the City of London. A piece that is very special to me recently was flattened under the wheels of one of my vehicles and Jonathan was able to have everything brought back to life. That is another place for you to visit when you are next in Sudbury. I recently took delivery of a new computer that was delivered by courier. As we signed for the package, it became clear that it was not a computer and indeed it was a box destined for a nursing home. As a signature had already been made on the machine it appeared for all the world as if the package had arrived. It transpired though that my computer had been delivered to someone else who claimed not to have received it. Once the courier centre mentioned the Police the computer appeared. All of this involved me in five hours visiting the Courier depot in Newmarket. Only sign for a package having checked it first no matter as to the protestations of the delivery agent. Several of my clients lately have been pressured to accept something that was not correct largely because they did not understand the impact of the situation. A long lease where no title was being deduced; a lease without a Landlord’s repairing covenant. As I have said so many times, a lease is an onerous document which can lead to untold expense. You must take advice. As you read these lines, the Diamond Jubilee will be upon us. In Flowton we will be lighting one of the 2012 beacons and I am sure that you will all be enjoying the celebrations. What a wonderful job the Queen has done. God save the Queen! Howard Gibbons

Weavers Meadow Show Homes Open 30th June

'+!

Persimmon Homes are delighted to announce the forthcoming opening of our two show homes at Weavers Meadow on the 30th June. Our Show Homes have been designed with families in mind, and focus on enhancing the wonderful layouts of both house types. Emily Wakefield from Claude Hooper Interiors who have designed the show homes has tried to give both homes a completely different feel. After a good spell of weather in March, there was always a chance that April could be wet, cold and with little sunshine. From about the 5th April it turned chilly, with heavy rain right into May. Not very good weather for birds that are nesting early. It would have been worse for ground nesting species near any rivers, Kingfishers and Grey Wagtail nests would have been destroyed by the rivers being over flooded. The bad weather did not stop a few early Swifts, 2 were flying high over the house on 25th April, and 4 more the next day. There were 21 feeding over Holbecks Park on 30th April. My second Cuckoo was heard calling near Aldham Church on 21st April. Whitethroats singing from 24th April in Shelley and Raydon. Housemartins and 3 Sandmartins were feeding over Benton End. Two Yellow Wagtails were seen at Raydon on the 24th April. My third Cuckoo calling and showing well on top of a Bore ash Tree at Kersey on 1st May. There was a Lesser Whitethroat singing at Broomhill on 3oth April. Another Lesser Whitethroat was heard during the dawn chorus along the railway walk on the 5th May. Garden Warblers were first heard at Broomhill from 3rd May. Very good numbers were heard singing in various areas from the 6th May. The reeling song of the Grasshopper Warbler was heard coming from Water Lane, Kersey, early in May. Short Eared Owls were seen in the Raydon area by Gary Mowles. At Giffords Park, after many months of having little or no water, there is now flooding over a wide area. Three Hobby were feeding over the flooded area on the 13th May. Another Yellow Wagtail was feeding at the new lagoon at Tower Mill Lane on May 12th. Several large feeding groups of Swallows were seen in many areas on the 12th & 13th May, also the number of Housemartins grew during the fine weekend of 12th – 13th. Red Kites were seen at Chattisham over a four week period by Peter Wooley. In next months issue there will be an update on Nightingales. As always if you see anything interesting please get in touch, just email me jerry@keithavis.co.uk Jerry

Crumbs - What A Result! A big thank you from Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare to everyone who helped to make the Cake Stall such a success on Saturday 12th May. SESAW volunteer Anne was delighted with the number of local shoppers who stopped to buy homemade goodies provided by other volunteers, in particular Anne's friend, Penny who baked 19 cakes for the event. Once again Alaister kindly provided the venue, in the doorway of his shop, Boxford News and nearly £190 was raised.

Mary Howell 1924 - 2012 It is with sadness and deep regret that the death was announced of our friend and neighbour Mary Howell on 1st May. Mary had been in failing health for a while and had been moved into St. Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich a few days before. Mary was born in Bournemouth on 16th December 1924. After owning several restaurants in Long Melford, Wales and Brighton she and her husband moved to Hadleigh in 1978. She was immediately welcomed into the local community, playing a major role in the local scene. She became secretary of the thriving Hadleigh Conservative Association, which in those days was invited each year for a party at Christmas to Sir George and Lady Burton’s beautiful Aldham Mill House. Other fund-raising lunches took place at the Bowling Club in Magdalen Road. However, Mary’s greatest love was bridge and she set to work organising classes at every level from beginners’ classes to improvers’ and advanced classes. She herself had won many major bridge awards and was only too pleased to pass on her expertise to any of her groups. She gave individual tuition and popular group classes in Hadleigh library and outlying villages. Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends and may she rest in peace. Rosemary Schade

Bildeston Primary School News It’s been a busy start to the term. Our news reporters, Isabel Chaplin and Chloe Davies, wrote: On Friday 27th April Year 6 went to Crucial Crew in Sudbury, a special event organised by ‘The Rotary Club’. Our school goes every year to learn about keeping safe and how to deal with different dangerous situations. Many people are involved in running the afternoon, including Police, St. John’s Ambulance and the Fire Brigade. It was an important afternoon because it told us what to do if we come across any situations. We all enjoyed our day! Years 6 children have just completed their SATs tests this week and are feeling rather relieved now they are all over! We took tests in reading comprehension, a long and short writing task, spelling and two Maths papers - one with a calculator and one without. We also took a Mental Maths test, listening carefully to a CD for the questions. We have done practice optional SATs every year since Year 2 so we should be used to them, but even so it was a bit different doing it for real. The best thing about it was being allowed to bring in nice snacks from home and having slightly more relaxed afternoons to keep our energy up! Thank you Isabel and Chloe for your report. The rest of the school have been busy too: Over the Easter break children were asked to keep up with their reading by completing an Easter Reading Challenge. The response to this challenge was brilliant! 47 children read between 1 and 12 books. This photograph shows them all proudly holding their certificates. Well done! Following the success of this we have a summer Olympic Reading Challenge, which is running through the whole of this term. To complete the challenge the children need to read different types of text - fiction, poetry, newspapers etc., and give each a score out of 10. We hope to give out lots of Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates at the end of term! The Diamond Jubilee and Olympic celebrations are a big part of our lives this term. On 18th May, the day the Olympic Torch arrived in the UK, we started our Olympic celebrations with our very own Olympic Torch Relay. On that same day we took part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the ‘Largest Dance Routine – Multi-venue’. The aim was to get as many children as possible worldwide to dance the same dance at the same time. It was a very challenging dance and we practiced it for several weeks beforehand. We had to have independent witnesses to watch our dance as part of the world record attempt. We hope we broke the record! By the time you read this we will have completed our Jubilee Celebration week including planting a tree and the presentation of Jubilee Coins to each of the children, all kindly donated by the PTFA. The children will have had a Tea Party, making their own buns, biscuits and sandwiches, and written Jubilee prayers for a display in Bildeston church along with prayers written by other children in the village. And finally, we are looking forward to our “Olympic Sports Day” on 25th June. We are starting the whole day with an Opening Ceremony, including a performance by the whole school of the Big Dance, an Olympic Song and other items performed by each of the classes. Then we will all take part in a range of track & field events and tournaments. At the end there will be a Closing Ceremony including the presentation of special medals for every child taking part. The results will be given, followed by a lap of honour by the captains of the winning team. A true Olympic Sports Day!

Lost Your Bikini Body?? Has the wet & miserable weather scuppered your efforts to get your bikini body ready for summer? Don’t despair, there’s still time to get that beach body ready for when the rain finally stops & the weather warms up. Or you may be one of the lucky ones packing your suitcases in a few weeks’ time & jetting off somewhere hot. Even if you’re not sunbathing it’s still good to get outside – good for our mood (ever noticed how people smile more when the sun’s out?), good for our bones (the body can’t store Vitamin D which is manufactured by sunlight) & good for our immune systems (colds & flu are more common in winter). Vitamin D is essential to maintain healthy bones &, especially as we get older, we need to keep the levels up to help avoid joint problems. Another factor in bone health is maintaining a healthy weight. Anyone who’s ever lost a stone or two would know how much easier it becomes to climb the stairs or move around generally. Imagine what a difference losing 8 or even 10 stone would make. There are many people who have lost these amounts of weight, incredible though it seems. They were effectively carrying another whole person around all the time! Since its inception around 28 years ago, Cambridge Weight Plan has been instrumental in helping probably many thousands of people lose life-changing amounts of weight. Originally developed by doctors for use with hospitalised people awaiting surgery but who were dangerously overweight, it is available through a network of trained Consultants who have experienced their own weight loss journey on the programme. If you would like individual help with a weight problem, Val has been an accredited Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant for 3 years and can be contacted on 01449 737113 or 07519 177645 or visit www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL for more information.

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Drama Department The rehearsals are fully underway now, for Hadleigh’s performance of Othello for the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival 2012 at a professional theatre in October. Pupils have been cast and are currently reading through the script, building on their knowledge of Othello and beginning to bring life to their characters. Next year’s school musical still remains a mystery and the announcement is awaited in anticipation. Auditions will be underway in the next week or so, and we wish the best of luck to the budding singers, actors and dancers who will be auditioning for a role. Summer Concert Hadleigh High School’s Summer Concert was a great success as it showed parents and visitors the wide range of talent we have here at Hadleigh High School. The concert had many different acts and performances to offer including: Orchestra, Choir, Nuclear Winter, solo artists, the Hadleigh High Jazz band, drummers and many more. As always the event was a huge success, enjoyed by the performers and audience alike. Daniel Holloway performed at the event and said that he ‘gained so much confidence from performing in front of such a big crowd.’ Star performer Arthur Glazin commented on the number of performers and Year groups partaking, and the variety of musical genres presented. He said that he found the concert ‘as enjoyable as ever.’ The concert also saw the new Head Boy and Girl take to the stage to present the prestigious event and they rose to the challenge spectacularly. Luke McGhee and Yasmin Tampion entertained the audience throughout with their superb confidence and comic talents. We are also very grateful to the Music staff for the support that they have provided for pupils to enable them to shine. However, the concert wouldn’t have been able to happen if it wasn’t thanks to Miss Macey and Miss Staples so thank you very much! In addition, we would also like to thank all families, friends and members of our local community who supported our popular evening event. Upcoming Exams Year 11s will soon be coming to the end of their exams. Year 10 too have been revising thoroughly for their Science GCSEs and others like Business Studies and GCSE PE. We wish all students undertaking exams the best of luck! School Council Hadleigh High School plans to improve our school site even more. We’re wishing to do so by expanding our canopy which currently is situated from the PE Department across to the main building. The expansion will run along the edge of the hard-court right to the Art Department. In addition to this, further improvements include building unisex toilets for all students to use. Year 7 Enrichment Year 7s will be offered the chance to go on a trip to Danbury where they will take part in a number of activities at the activity centre there. This is the first time the school has organised this trip so we hope it is a success for our current Year 7s and for future years to come. Year 8 Enrichment Students in Year 8 will be spending 3 days performing in Combined Arts. The combined arts programme combines Music, Drama, Art and Dance and on the third night, students will present a performance of their work to their families and friends. For the rest of the week, the 2 remaining days, students will be doing various activities to do with the Olympics. Year 9 Enrichment Approximately 80 students will be going to the Ardéche in the South of France from 30th June – 8th July for 9 days. Students will be participating in many activities whilst they are there including: Kayaking, a High Ropes Course, Mountain Biking rock diving, and not forgetting the Ardéche Descent where students will kayak down the Ardéche river for 2 days, passing under the famous Pont D’Arc. This trip has been a huge success in the past and we hope it will be for this year’s Year 9 too! Year 10 Enrichment For Enrichment, Year 10's will be doing Work Experience with local businesses. Already, the pupils have received information about where they will be going to work for the two weeks. During their PSHEe lessons, they have had the opportunity to go to 30 minute sessions with people from different businesses varying from Suffolk County Council, Architects, and to the Armed Forces and Journalists. This gave pupils the opportunity to interact with the employed and to ask questions about their place of work. This was very beneficial to all pupils for when they come to do their Work Experience placements during Enrichment. Armed Forces Trip A group of pupils had the chance to go to Bassinbourn Barracks for an armed forces day. The day was for those who have an interest in any of the armed forces whether it was the Army, the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy or the Royal Marines. On the day, pupils experienced Apache Flight Simulators, DCCT Ranges, rock climbing, a tug of war competition, and assault courses. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and wish to do something very similar soon. 14

Sailing Success Alistair Grant is a young sailing champion from Hadleigh High School; he is currently ranked 26th in Britain having only started competing in sailing at the age of eleven. On the last bank holiday weekend, Alistair took his boat (Optimist) to the National Sailing selection in Weymouth. Alistair finished his weekend in glory ending up being ranked 12th place. Due to his phenomenal achievement Alistair has been chosen to compete in Greece and Hungary layer this year. We wish him the best of luck for future competitions! Year 7 Reading Week Year 7 celebrated reading week, which is run by the library and English department to promote literacy and reading for pleasure. There were many exciting events held during the week. Author Glenn Dakin came to talk to the pupils about his novel Candleman. Glenn is well known in the industry, writing stories for Marvel Comics as well as scripting for Children's TV programmes such as Bob the Builder and Shaun the Sheep. Glenn spoke to pupils about the inspiration behind his books, and challenged them to invent their own comic hero. The highlight of the week was the book-themed non-uniform day held on Friday 4th May. Pupils made a fantastic effort and the classrooms were full of characters from Harry Potter, Biggles, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Animal Farm just to name a few. Liam Hodgkinson won best dressed boy for his 'Skulduggery Pleasant' costume, and Ebony-Brooke Rivers won best dressed girl for her 'Nancy' costume from Oliver Twist. Other events included the ever so popular 'Where's Wally?’ Hunt, and 'Guess the Teacher Reading' competition. Pupils were also treated to teachers reading extracts of David Walliam's latest book 'Gangsta Granny' during lessons. Pupil Charlotte Storrer said, 'Reading Week encouraged those who didn't like reading, to think that it can be enjoyable and fun!' Hadleigh High School Fete On Saturday 12th May 2012, Hadleigh High School hosted its first ever whole-school fete. The fete was organised by our Year 10 students who had been attending regular meetings for many months, organising, creating and planning the event. On the day, there was a large variety of entertainment, food and drink, competitions and games including: music performances by Nuclear Winter, Connected, 5th Dimension and many others with an impromptu performance from a group of seven Year 10 girls. There was a burger van and ice-cream van, an ‘Astro-dome’, Sponge –the-Teacher, archery, 1287 Air Training Corps with other smaller stalls. Overall, we raised approximately £1309.00. There was a high level of commitment by our students who made this event possible. We would especially like to thank Mrs Calvino, Miss Ellis and Miss Jordan because without them, the fete wouldn’t have been able to happen, so thank you! Vegetable Patch Recently, local organisation Eastfeast donated some money to help fund a vegetable garden outside one of our science rooms, along with some planters and a pond in the conservation area. The planters are finished and making progress and the ASDAN and agricultural students have been planting beetroot, garlic, potatoes, carrots and garlic in the vegetable garden. We will be selling some of our produce down at the Hadleigh Community Primary School fete on the 30th of June. As ever this project can only be successful with the help of the community so if you are interested in giving a helping hand with weeding or maybe giving some advice, please do not hesitate to contact the school. English Prefects On Wednesday 9th May, the new English prefects went down to St Mary’s Primary School where they gave advice and organised various activities to do with creative writing, for the year 6s from all our feeder schools. English prefect Tori Hale said ‘I really enjoyed working with the younger students; they were all really enthusiastic and positive.’ The feedback sheets we got from the year 6’s also show they enjoyed the day. They thought that the English prefects were sensitive and the feedback they got from them was very constructive. So a fun and interactive day was had by all! UEA Library Visit The four Year 10 students, who are nearing the completion of their dissertations to gain Edexcel’s Extended Project Qualification, visited the library at the University of East Anglia to continue their research. Abbie Brown, Kate McIntosh, Shelley Manning and Courgette Mushroom are now close to finishing their dissertations and the trip there helped to finalise their ideas. They all found the facilities at the university, and the wide array of research materials available to them, incredibly helpful in making sure their work is of the best quality that it can be, before it is marked after half-term. Congratulations! In regards to the school’s new Head Boy and Head Girl, we would like to congratulate Luke McGhee and Yasmin Tampion on their appointments in these positions and wish them the best of luck for the coming year. Kate McIntosh (Deputy Head Girl) and Tommy Newbigging (Deputy Head Boy) also need to be congratulated on their achievements. Students; Harriet Cutler, Tori Hale, Shelley Manning, Collette Motteram ,Michael Sexton – Grant and Ben Smith will be heading up our school with the Head Prefect team. We feel that all of these students have done exceptionally well in gaining these roles and we know that everyone looks forward to what they will bring to the school within the next year. Researched and Written by Abbie Brown, Harriet Cutler, Tori Hale, Frankie King, Kate McIntosh, Michael Sexton-Grant and Yasmin Tampion. School Vouchers If you still have any “Sainsburys Active Kids 2012” or “Tesco for Schools & Clubs” vouchers and don’t know what to do with them, please can you send them to Hadleigh High School. We will use them to buy many different items of sport, ICT and other equipment. Thank you for your help.

Badger Fuels Limited – A Real Alternative Way to Buy Heating Oil With thirty years experience in keeping local people warm, Managing Director - Nicholas Wicks, born and bred in Sudbury, has created Badger Fuels Limited, a third generation oil company designed to meet the demand of buying heating oil in modern times. Nicholas believes the way forward for the oil user is to buy only what they need, when they need it, giving the customer tailored and unique control. As heating oil users know, traditional Oil Companies usually supply a minimum of 500 litres. Badger Fuels have revolutionised this out-dated concept by using brand new micro tankers built with industry standard approved meters, to deliver smaller quantities of 100, 200 & 300 litres. The benefits are; no more large bills with money just sitting in your tank, a personal service using 30 years of knowledge & experience, a diary reminder service to avoid those untimely run-outs, almost silent deliveries, no more large tankers blocking roads/squeezing into difficult driveways or lumbering along narrow country lanes and most importantly, to give you, the customer, a unique dependable cost effective service. Badger Fuels concentrates on keeping the homes warm in the villages around Sudbury & Hadleigh. Offering the smaller delivery for a cold snap or just enough for your hot water over the summer months, maybe you are about to move, rent, on a smaller budget or just worried about theft. A quick response service is available for people who have suffered a runout. Being fully OFTEC trained & qualified, we can deliver your oil AND restart most boilers to get you warm again as soon as possible. We also offer a sight tube replacement service and boiler analysis service to ensure you are using your oil efficiently. At Badger Fuels all our services are carried out by highly experienced and qualified staff giving you, the Customer, an old fashioned, peace of mind service which in essence, “the complete package”. For further information, please ring Nicholas Wicks or Zsa-Zsa Sparrow Tel: 0758 269 1111, email: badgerfuels@hotmail.co.uk, website: www.badgerfuels.com

U3A – A Philosophy of Gardening How do you get from Plato under a tree to Alexander’s parsley on the roadsides of Hadleigh? Our speaker at our monthly meeting in May, passionate gardener Audrey Tyerman, took us on a journey via Louis 14th at Versailles and the geometric layouts of the time to “the iris man” at Benton End. From her large collection of colour slides Audrey skilfully associated her talk with more than a dozen of the individual groups of our local branch of the U3A. For instance, our gardening groups interests were included by mention of Beth Chatto, who had a “dry” garden long before the current hosepipe ban, our musical interests were included with Scott Joplin’s “Chrysanthemum Rag” and “In a Monastery Garden”. Audrey’s description of paintings and stained glass windows featuring flowers were particularly relevant for our art appreciation and painting groups. Flowers and trees in poetry brought in another of our groups. Many churchyards are full of wild flowers and are now designated nature reserves, as will have been enjoyed by our church visiting group. One of the last connections was with the group recording the flowers and plants on Broom Hill - that survey lives on in the Natural History Museum in Ipswich. Audrey took us on a lovely and interesting journey, which cheered us up on a cold and wet afternoon. At our next monthly meeting, on June 11th, guest speaker Chris Parfitt will be talking about “Chile – the long thin country”- from deserts, to mountains and glaciers, to Cape Horn. Organized events during the coming weeks will take groups of members to visit the Bure Valley Steam Railway and including a boat trip on the Broads, to the local Mercury Theatre for a performance of “Doctor in the House”, and an outing to the Saville Garden near Windsor, with lunch, a Thames boat trip, and a cream tea. Other events, to cover a wide range of interests, are being planned for the year, ending with a December visit to the popular Christmas Spectacular at Thursford in Norfolk.

Headstones & Memorials Find it by the footpath! Himalayan Balsam Its proper name is Impatiens grandiflora and it is of the same group of plants as the “Bizzy-lizzys” that many of you cultivate at home. This particular version was introduced to the UK from Northern India (the Himalayas) as a garden plant during the mid 19th Century, but it escaped from “captivity” and has now become a very invasive weed. In the Wild Life and Countryside Acts it is up there with Japanese Knot-weed and Giant Hogweeds What’s different about this plant? Individually the plants are quite attractive, with red-tinged dark-green stems and leaves, bearing large numbers of pink (occasionally white) “pitcher” shaped flowers during the summer (see Photo). They are an “annual” (which means that they grow from seed each year) starting their growth in very early spring and by June can have grown to above headheight. They prefer moist “peaty” soil and will grow quite happily in either full sunlight or the very low light levels of woodlands The plant is a very strong, perfectly engineered structure. The stems are “fleshy”, hollow tubes with strong fibres buried within their walls, enabling the plant to flex in any direction with little danger of breaking the main stem. The root system consists of very shallow roots spreading over a large area, fixing the plant securely to the ground. The flowers contain a large amount of nectar which bumble bees find irresistible, and the plant has evolved a very interesting method of distributing its seeds. Each pod contains several (10 - 20) dark-coloured seeds, but they don’t just “fall-out” as many other plants do: Balsam actually “fires” them several metres (5 - 6 metres is not uncommon) in all directions. I’ll explain: Each seed pod is around 30 – 50mm long (that’s 11/4 – 2 inches to us oldies) and sort of “squarish”, with a number of “ribs” coming together at the tip. (See photo) When the seeds mature the pod tries to open by curling back each of these ribs, but initially the “seams” between them holds it tightly closed. As the ribs increase their efforts to curl-back, the stress on these “seams” rises until they are holding together a number of springs each attempting to bend outward in different directions. When the load gets too great they snap allowing the “springs” to suddenly curl outward, flicking the seeds far and wide - quite ingenious! (You can see the pods and the “ribs” within them in the photograph). If the seeds fall on soil they simply grow the following year, if they fall into water they float and are carried along by the current to start a new colony downstream - they’ll even travel on the boots of Anglers and feet of animals. Balsam has very pretty flowers, and has solved all of the problems with which most other plants struggle, but it poses a sinister threat that you do not normally see! It’s damaging the environment! Balsam’s growth-rate easily out competes any of our natural local plants, creating such dense shade that it kills-off everything beneath it, resulting in large patches of bare soil. The next spring doesn’t bring any relief because it starts growing very early in the year giving our native species no chance to re-establish themselves. Undisturbed it will grow into large, dense swathes creating areas where nothing else can survive. This is a particular problem along river banks because the water easily erodes any areas of unprotected soil. Because it is not a native of the UK Balsam has few natural enemies; neither insects nor fungi attack it, nor do birds eat the seeds. It’s like an “army-on-the-march” and once it arrives there is little that nature can do to stop it: the only protection for the environment is human intervention. Occasionally you may see people either cutting it down or pulling it up, but please don’t view this as destroying our wildflowers – think of it as fighting a foreign invader which is destroying our native plants. Credit Crunch Heat Pack Comprising of: 1 X FERROLI 26KW A RATED COMBI BOILER WITH FLUE AND CLOCK

Welcome to Edition number 36! Yes! It’s now three years since I first put hoof to keyboard with my ramblings and, hopefully, informative titbits about activity at The Centre. I think with this being an anniversary Blog it would be appropriate to extend a big ‘Thank you’ to those organisations out there who have kindly published my Blog, and continue to do so, thus giving valuable support to The Centre. It was only the other day that looking out into the yard from my room I noticed our Swallows are once again back at Shelley; darting in and out of the stable block, busy preparing their nests. The other Monday two of the maintenance team were cleaning the fields and upon their return I overheard them discussing the Cuckoo calling in the valley, so yet another migrant has returned home. On the subject of homecoming, Charlie is once again with us having successfully completed his initial training for carriage driving (I heard a whisper that he was much liked at the school and had done very well, so a high five to Charlie!). Once he has completed his full training he will join Jet as our second horse trained in this discipline: we expect this to be around September time. This brings to mind school of another sort in that I’ve just seen a note from Michelle, one of our Helpers, who attended a recent East Region Training day in which she says “I found the day very helpful and informative: the subjects covered included mounting and dismounting, leading and side helping, the importance of a balanced seat and horse behaviour: it was a great opportunity to meet others not only from The Shelley Centre but, from across the region”. I am sure that both Charlie and Michelle will now be keen to put their new skills and knowledge to good use for the benefit of our Riders. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the walk on Sunday 06th May until later in the year so keep your ears and eyes open for notices. However, it didn’t stop one of our stalwart Helpers, John of the electric bike, as I call him, who having raised £140 in sponsorship was determined to go ahead with the walk in spite of the weather; he then turned up the next day to take on the ragwort which is starting to grow in the fields again. Continuing the fund raising theme, Adam Bensusan, Steve Holsley and Fabian Wilness are running on 08th July in the London 10K Run so please be generous and sponsor them either through The Centre or online via www.justgiving/shelleycentre your support is vital in keeping The Centre running and will be very welcome. Ah well, better put the keyboard away now as I should be helping our Riders practice for our very own Shelley Show on Sunday 24th June; will you be there? “OUR VILLAGE HISTORY” A talk on the two villages and the people who lived and worked there

Monday 4th June; 6.00pm

Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline Mid Suffolk Link

Urgently Wanted In only a few weeks the Children from Chernobyl will be with us in Needham Market for their respite visit. Having now received the details of the children we are able to gauge their sizes more accurately. With the children arriving in only the clothes they stand in we are trying to collect good quality “nearly new clothing in time for their arrival in ages 6 to 10 years. The group this year will consist of 12 girls and 8 boys. Summer and winter clothing is required so they can take clothing home for them that will hopefully last them as long as possible. Any donations can be dropped in at the Charity Shop in Needham Market or alternatively you can call me and I will be happy to come and collect. We have also found the children really love to be able to play on the “Micro scooter’s, the ones that can be folded up, again, if you have one of these that is no longer used and could be donated it would be very gratefully received. Lastly, we are aiming to send each child home with a shoe box of basic first aid items that all of us take for granted but that these children just do not have access to. If you can help by donating one or more of these items there will be a “drop box in our Charity Shop and all contributions will go directly to the children. We are looking for: Plasters, blister plasters, Strepsils, Lockets, Chapsticks, Mouth Ulcer cream, Cold sore cream, Menthol vapour rub, Calpol sachets or fastmelts, Ibuprofen or paracetomol liquid, Cough mixture (age 6 plus), menthol nasal sticks,Drapolene cream plus Paracetomol tablets (not capsules as they are for adults only). The list of medicines plus other items that are needed for the children can be picked up from the Charity Shop or again by giving me a call. With grateful thanks to all who support us. Maggie’s Elderflower Cordial As a child I remember the Queen’s Silver Jubilee vividly – a remarkably hot day with a stash of things to do in Hyde Park. So I for one can hardly wait for her diamond celebrations. Hoorah for Hadleigh, say I. One particular fond memory I have of the occasion is of my father opening his latest batch of by Sarah Thompson elderflower cordial. Bring on the summer! With special thanks to my friend Maggie for this version of a classic favourite. Ingredients 20 – 30 elderflower heads 1½ litres boiling water 2 lemons thinly sliced 80 grams tartaric acid or citric acid powder 1 kilo sugar Method: Wash and drain flowers well. Put all ingredients into a large bowl – add boiling water last. Cover with a cloth and stir daily for three days. Strain liquid through a muslin, and then bottle it. Store cordial in the fridge or freeze it in plastic bottles. For a sharper tasting cordial, put the lemons in the pan whilst bringing the pan to the boil. Don’t forget this is cordial, so add iced water, soda water or tonic for a cool drink. And don’t forget to raise a toast to HM the Queen.

Bildeston History Quarterly

When you come to make a claim, you find out how good your insurance really is.

Out now, with Bildeston’s village sign on the front cover, Issue 3 follows up the question from a resident ‘Where was the Chapel in Chapel Street?’ Although nothing of the building remains, the site is clearly identified but, unfortunately, its origins are still unknown, the date 1435 being the oldest surviving documentary reference found so far. The series continue. ‘Lords of the Manor’ tells the story of the Loveyne family, members being absentee landlords during the medieval period. ‘Links with the Sea’ has a biography of Captain Edward Rotheram, after whom Rotheram Road is named and a new series begins entitled ‘Bildeston on the Map’ that features this area from Hodskinson’s 1783 survey of Suffolk. If you have further information concerning any of the articles that appear in the magazine or have a question about some aspect of Bildeston’s history, please get in touch with Sue Andrews (editor), 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 7BG. I hope that you enjoy reading Bildeston History Quarterly as much as I enjoyed putting the magazine together. Bildeston History Quarterly issue 3 (Summer 2012) is out now, price £3. Available at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer and Keith Avis Newsagent in Hadleigh.

Hot weather tips for pets We’re sure everyone has seen the posters ‘Dogs Die in Hot Cars’ but its not only dogs and not only in cars where we see problems. Vehicles act like a greenhouse and even with an open window inside temperatures soar. The same applies to bird and hamster cages left near a window with the sun on them and a rabbit/guinea pig hutch in a garden, without adequate shade becomes an oven. Heatstroke can also occur in dogs exercised in the ‘heat of the day’. Remember if it’s hot for us it’s worse for your pet running around in a fur coat! Early morning is the best time for walks and make sure you have plenty of cool water available at home. Other seasonal problems are grass seeds, from uncut grass, that cling to the long hair around ears and toes and work their way into the ears and skin. So trimming long coats and avoiding long grass is a wise move over the summer months. Insect stings are usually not problematic long-term. We are often presented with dogs with a swollen face/head – which can occur as little as 20 minutes after the sting. Anti allergic drugs and pain relief may be needed so seek veterinary advice. If you are holidaying with your pet this summer, remember to find out about the arrangements for out-of-hours emergencies at a local veterinary practice before you go. Veterinary surgeons across the UK are required under to make provision for out-of-hours emergency veterinary treatment but it is the responsibility of animal owners to know what to do and where to go in a veterinary emergency. Who would have thought that a talk on “Plants for Shady Places, could

have turned out to be one of the funniest exampls of stand -up-comedy we have witnessed at the Garden Club and there wasn’t even a risque joke, plus, it was very informative. / + , -0 1 2 0 Ben Potterton from Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery was the speaker on 14th / 0 1 3 0 . * 1 2 May and marvelous he was too, giving us a non stop illustrated lecture on 4 2 5 + 1 / - the above subject as well as showing us living examples of the several plants he was talking about. I did feel a little sorry for the two French students he brought with him as clearly their understanding of English ( ) $ * + , - + was very scant and they certainly didn’t understand the jokes! They are with him studying landscape gardening and I really hope their visit to the ! ) " ,- + . * / + Ram was a little easier to understand but, whether or not they have learnt ! " !! " how to cope with the English pub I have no idea! As well as running his 4 acre property as a nursery, he also manages to be an expert on breeding and raising rare-breed birds, especially endangered cranes and !" # $ !%& '( $% "" ducks. He is apparently so well known for his work it takes him all over the world and then the returning of the birds for release. Apparently some that haven’t done well in various zoos are sent to him, mainly it would seem because they are free on his property and they respond with better breeding success. I have a feeling that it must be a bit unnerving to come face to face with birds that are rather large - waist height - and fairly fierce looking! News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I love my garden in the early spring. There is an almost continuous succession of colour. At the moment the petals from the apple blossom have dropped, and the various aquilegias are beginning to make a display, but there is one serious problem. WEEDS ! The weather in April made it very difficult to keep the weeds under control, and the display in some parts of the garden is spoiled by them. Their exuberant growth has meant that there is plenty of material to compost. I am not the only one suffering, and there has been quite a bit of discussion on the gardening internet group that I follow about what weeds it is safe to compost, and ones that do not rot down. A good place to look for information on the internet is www.compostthis.co.uk. I am not going to have many plums or damsons this year due to frosts at the wrong time, and am waiting to see what the apple crop is going to be. There were frosts that could have damaged the flowers, and discouraged the bees from flying. If there is a heavy crop in prospect June is the time to thin it out. Open Gardens 2nd June 428 Norwich Road Ipswich 5th June Woodwards Blacksmiths Lane Coddenham 9th June Larks Hill Clopton Road Tuddenham St Martin 10th June 14 Gardens in East Bergholt 17th June Green Farmhouse The Green Shelland Stowmarket 24th June 3 Gardens Long Melford Weather Records In April at Kersey there were 107.5 mm (4.2") of rain. It may have been more or less where you were, but it was still a very useful quantity of rain after the dry Winter. Surprisingly it was not the highest April rainfall since I have been including the figures in this column. in April 1998 there were 115 mm (4.5") . The highest ever month during this period was August 2004 when 124.8 mm (4.9") were recorded. The heavy rainfall brought the 3 month figure up to 150 mm (5.9") which is close to average rainfall. In April the maximum temperature was 17 Cel (63F) which is cool for April. Last year it reached 26 Cel (79F). The minimum was -1 Cel (30F), which is typical for the month. In my garden the ground temperature in mid May is 10 Cel (50F) . Hints The mad Spring rush should be over and it is time to enjoy your handiwork, but there are still things which can usefully be done apart from the chore of mowing the grass. Roses are beautiful, but they are liable to "black spot". This is a fungus disease which unsurprisingly results in black spots on the leaves, which grow and eventually kill the leaf. This can be controlled by spraying with a fungicide and it is more effective if you start to treat it early rather than late. If you go visiting Open Gardens take a paper & pencil and make a note of plants that you think would look good in your own garden. Many people think that June is too late to sow seeds, but there are lots of possibilities. Amongst the flowers it is the right time to sow biennials like wallflowers, which will flower next Spring, and hardy perennials. One can still sow hardy and half hardy annuals direct in the garden. Nasturtiums work well in this way. Amongst the vegetables one can still sow peas, french beans, and salad crops. Enjoy your gardening, John Rye

Crockatt Garage celebrates its first birthday

Crockatt Garage Ltd Servicing - Repairs - Diagnostics - Air Conditioning - Tyres

Air Conditioning Servicing

£49.95 inc

Crockatt Garage has just celebrated its first birthday and what a great first year it has been. Brothers, David and Simon Foster with over 50 years experience between them of delivering excellent levels of customer service and knowing what people want, put a brave foot forward last year opening a friendly, reliable, honest garage to serve Hadleigh and the surrounding area. As well as offering servicing and other mechanical repairs Crockatt Garage now supply and fit tyres, carry out Air Conditioning servicing and repairs, and to complement their range of valeting services are now offering Hadleigh a hand car wash service. With the restriction of the current hosepipe ban and the added convenience of a local service, Saturdays will now be our hand car washing day. From a simple wash and dry to a premium clean, large or small we can cater for your needs. Having now established themselves and with an ever growing customer base, David and Simon have now had time to reflect on an exciting first year. Since starting, their portfolio has expanded with quite a few local business users and bearing this in mind they joined 1Link, a national management company for fleet vehicles. This enables the servicing of “lease” cars at your local garage to manufacturer standards and no need to travel miles for your servicing. With facilities to suit smaller commercial vehicles, this is also becoming a major part of the business. Another newcomer is the partnership with Black Circles, an internet based tyre supplier using Crockatt Garage as their local fitting agent. Crockatt Garage would like to take this opportunity to thank all their customers, suppliers, family and friends for all their support in their first year of trading. Diamond and Gold A Flower Festival & Celebration How do you get 29 blokes in a village to join in flower arranging? How do you celebrate a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games in London all at the same time? You find jam jars, a velodrome, a sailing dingy, a rowing eight, a stone of Scone, imperial jewels, diamonds and gold, lots of imagination, a bit of arm-twisting and put them together with 29 sports in one building. Approximately 2,788 years ago the Olympic Games were formulated in ancient Greece; approximately 2,000 years ago Christ walked on this earth and a mere 60 years ago Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne of Great Britain. To cover this time scale is a marathon in itself but our small village of Raydon, near Hadleigh, will do this to mark this momentous year of 2012. We will plant a tree in honour of the Jubilee on 29th June at a Preview for the “Diamond & Gold” Flower Festival to be held from 30th June to 2nd July in our parish church. Many other parishes will no doubt do the same and it is hoped that the Diocese will collate all these events and make an interesting itinerary for people to follow around the County. Throughout the year there will be many events in our beautiful East Anglian churches for everyone to enjoy. “Diamond & Gold” will dazzle all who come to see it, so be at St Mary’s Church Raydon, on B1070, from 10 - 6 over the weekend 30th June to 2nd July.

Sunday the 13th May turned out to be one of the best days of the year so far, which was great for us as we staged the Mixed Doubles tournament that day. This year saw many very close matches take place, but in the end, the battle for the championship was between Linda Dhondy and her partner Ben Daniels and Jan Richards partnered by Trevor Rowland. In yet another hard fought set though, it was Jan and Trevor who came out on top, winning Mixed Doubles Champions 2012, all four of their matches on the from left to right: Ben, Jan, Trevor day. Unfortunately, our Ipswich & Linda league tennis matches have not been blessed with the same good weather, and many matches have already been postponed or interrupted. This is going to play havoc with the schedule I suspect, but gives the club a little more time to find additional men to play in the teams. If you fancy some match play, please do come along….your club needs you! The Wimbledon ticket draw took place at Hadleigh Tennis club on Sunday the 6th May. The draw is open to club members and this year we had 5 pairs of tickets on offer, which have all found new homes now. The happy recipients are no doubt planning their travel arrangements and deciding which matches they would like to see, hope the weather is kind to them. Hadleigh Tennis club plays (from March to October), on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. 2012 annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students. If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com or contact Paul Knowles on 01473 828983
