FIT FOR A QUEEN! February 6th marked the sixtieth anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne and St Mary’s Church was packed at a special service to celebrate the event. The service was the brainchild of the Mayor, Penny Cook, and she believed that Hadleigh was the only community in the county formally to mark the event on the day. Civic dignitaries from across the county and personnel from Wattisham Flying Station joined members of Hadleigh Town Council, parish clergy, representatives from organisations in the town and others. Also taking part were children from St Mary’s and Hadleigh Community primary schools. Unfortunately, the bad weather prevented Beaumont pupils from taking part. “It made me very proud that the town was able to show its loyalty to the Queen and demonstrates the affection in which she is held,” said Penny. “I am very grateful to the Dean, church officials and Town Council staff for their hard work to make the celebration possible,” she added. Other celebrations are planned for the bank holiday jubilee weekend including lunch in the street and a 50s dance. Further details will be available later. Hadleigh Town Council has provided a Book Of Celebration for residents and visitors to the town to write messages of congratulations to the Queen. Sheets are available at the Town Council Offices, the Library and in St. Mary’s Church. The completed book will be sent to Buckingham Palace in July.

You’re never too old to Volunteer… Suffolk’s older people have many work and life experiences to share with others and at local charity Age UK Suffolk they are celebrating the achievements of one of their oldest volunteers, 97 year-old Lucy Norman. Lucy became a volunteer telephone befriender at the age of 96 after her husband passed away. When asked why she decided to start 97 year old Lucy Norman (left), a volunteering Lucy said, “I Telephone Befriending Volunteer with just couldn’t stop helping Carol Baker, Age UK Suffolk’s people, I had the time and Befriending Co-ordinator. I wanted to do something useful”. One benefit of being a telephone befriender is that volunteers do not have to leave their home. Lucy telephones an 81 year old lady from Stoke by Nayland once a week for a 20 minute chat, sharing experiences and catching up on what’s happening in the world. She is now celebrating her first complete year as a volunteer with Age UK Suffolk. When asked what she likes best about the role, Lucy replied “I love the satisfaction of hearing someone else’s happiness just through the tone of their voice”. Volunteering helps Lucy forget her own problems and even helps combat her own feelings of loneliness and isolation. Lucy added “Hearing my new friend respond positively is a real motivating factor for me to keep going with this for as long as I can, I am getting so much satisfaction from helping someone else, I would recommend it to everyone”. Michelle Blom, Age UK Suffolk’s Volunteer Officer said “Older volunteers are warmly welcomed into our organisation. We greatly value their understanding and ability to engage with other older people and share their life experiences with someone who was becoming isolated and lonely. Lucy’s enjoyment of her befriending also shows that volunteering benefits both the volunteers as well as our clients.” The charity needs many more befrienders to make visits or telephone calls so that other isolated and lonely people can enjoy companionship. Their challenge for 2012 is ‘You are never too old to volunteer, so why not give it a try?’ Age UK Suffolk has 700 volunteers around Suffolk, but needs many more and there is a range of interesting jobs to do, from charity shops to day centres, or from befriending to fundraising. Men’s Salon hosts a Charity Day for Josh Hadleigh based Men’s Salon ‘James Daniel’ is set to host a charity day to raise funds in memory of local boy Josh Rix, a childhood friend of the salons owner – James Hellyer. Josh had rushed to fly out to Australia after his mother, Judy, suffered a stroke. Tragically Judy passed away just hours after Josh and his brother reached Australia. The day after his mother was cremated; Josh suffered a seizure and died on the 12th January. James Daniel will donate a full days takings from all the services offered at the salon, including haircuts and massages, to the fund set up to contribute towards the costs associated with flying Josh’s body home. Owner, James Hellyer comments: “this situation is truly heart breaking and I can’t even begin to imagine what the Rix family have been through in these past few weeks. The story has shocked the community and I feel it’s important to do something to show our support. Josh and I played sport together as kids and he was a much loved local lad. He will be very sadly missed. The charity day is being held on the 16th March from 8am – 9pm at the James Daniel salon, and everyone is invited to come in and show their support for the Rix family. There is need to book an appointment – simply walk in. James Daniel is situated at the Benton Street end of the High Street, opposite Weavers Spice. Suffolk Firm Enters the Dragons’ Den The location for Hadleigh based Jim Lawrence Ironworks’ latest photography shoot was the infamous Dragons’ Den studio – ‘The Depository’. The Depository in Stamford Hill, London is a 19th century warehouse, with 8000 square feet of vaulted ceilings, original windows and brick walls spread over 3 floors. The Dragons’ Den is filmed on the first floor. Sheena Lawrence commented “Walking up that iconic staircase for the first time was quite exciting – I was glad I didn’t have to pitch to a roomful of Dragons at the top though!” Instead of Dragons the team from Jim Lawrence were met by an eclectic mix of props including giant letters, vintage toys and a ten foot high star! Other celebrities and businesses to use this location include Pixie Lott, Amy Winehouse and fashion house Chanel. Who knows which of the Dragons drives the vintage pedal car between takes… The star of the Depository on this particular day was a humble pendant light. Jim Lawrence’s beautiful new Ava Pendant was such a hit with the ad agency team that it never made it home to Suffolk. Sheena spoke for everyone at Jim Lawrence when she said that it was a great day, but the best part was returning to beautiful Suffolk at the end!

We were overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who packed St Mary’s Church for the funeral on February 14th, proof of how popular they were, and loved by all that knew them. Thank you also for the kind donations to Great Ormand Street and the trust fund for little Alfie Rix.

A chip off the Old Block! Laura Wood is the 7th generation of stonemasons working for “Wood for Stone”. Laura completed her apprenticeship in 2011 and has demonstrated a natural talent for working with stone. With an inherited gift for creative carving she has followed closely in the footsteps of her stonemason father Andrew. Stonemasonry being heavy and hard work most people would probably assume it to be a solely male domain, that concept has clearly been shattered. One of Laura’s first projects was a large memorial in Langham for the USAF to commemorate American servicemen & women. Some newly qualified stonemasons might have been intimidated by such a project but not Laura. Not only did she create a masterpiece but also finished it on time and to the complete satisfaction and delight of the American military attaché in London who presided over the unveiling of the memorial. Laura is now a director of the company but at every opportunity she will get down to that “hands on work” she finds so creative and rewarding. Whilst “Wood for Stone” produce a full range of stonework projects Laura is now established as the Headstone & Memorial focal point and ensures that each project passes her discerning quality assurance standards. In this age of automation it is a comfort to know that traditional skills and handcrafts are still around and being practiced and promoted by old established companies. Only too often we accept lower quality and standards in favour of imported and massproduced work. If it were not for time-honoured companies like “Wood for Stone” this might be the only alternative. Let’s hope that we will always find a place for our traditional craftsmen and their skills. At least Laura is doing her part to keep that British expertise alive! Friday 25th May - Monday 28th May 2012 This is the weekend that the French Twinning partners of Hadleigh are making their biennial visit. The committee of HDTA is now busy making arrangements to entertain our French friends. We have received their initial list and nearly 60 French people are expected to be on their coach. Although we have several new members this year, we are always happy to have more especially if you would like to be a host. Contact our chairman Peter Matthews 828233 if you would like more details. Prior to their visit this year we are planning one more fundraising event which will be a race night, the date is yet to be finalised so watch the diary dates here.

St Peter’s Church Elmsett Bell Fund St Peter’s Church Elmsett has bought another bell to add to the existing ring of 3. This will enable us to ring more variety of changes and will sound a lot more interesting. Extra framework has to be made and fitted on to the existing frame before the new bell can be hung, which results in a cost of just under £5,500. The order has been placed with, and a deposit paid to, John Taylor’s Bellfoundry to carry out the work during 2012. As part of our fundraising we are holding a BOOK SALE on Saturday 10th March – details below.

MAJOR P. R. LEE MBE RMP SIB Peter Robert Lee was born in Marylebone, London on 4 March 1929. His parents met at the military hospital on Marylebone Road and had three sons and a daughter. From a young age Peter was keen to join the army. He had an uncle who died in the battle of Gallipoli during World War I, and Peter’s Grandfather Francis Matthews fought in the Sudan with the 21st Lancers under Lord Kitchener. In September 1946 Peter enlisted in the General Service Corps for which his mother signed the necessary papers as he was under 18 years of age. His early army fitness training began at Barton Stacey, Hampshire. On 5 December 1946 Peter was transferred to the King’s Royal Rifle Corps but a year later responded to a recruiting drive to serve with the Corps of Royal Military Police. Peter rose quickly up the noncommissioned ranks to Warrant Officer. He served mainly in the UK, but was also posted to North West Europe and to Germany where he met his first wife, Edith. Later their son Clinton was born in London. Peter’s military career also took him to Kenya where he was involved in the conflict against the Mau Mau. A lasting reminder of this time was a shrapnel blast in the knee. Peter was commissioned into the Special Investigation Branch of the RMP in August 1965 as Captain, and was posted to Osnabruck. Peter also served in Jamaica, Singapore and Malaysia where he was highly valued as mediator between the British Army and the local people whose trust he won by his sense of fairness. In April 1972 Captain Peter Lee was honoured with Membership of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to the British Army. In 1973 he was appointed Deputy Assistant Provost Marshall Northern Command SIB UK in the rank of Major. During his time in York, Peter, now a widower, met and later married Jill in September 1974. Peter’s last task was as DAPM Antwerp with the British Army of the Rhine in April 1975. He played a key role facilitating and policing the complex movements of supplies from Antwerp to Roermond using the RMP TA and assisted by the Belgian Gendarmerie. On retirement from the RMP in December 1976 Peter joined Mobil Oil as Security Manager at Coryton Oil Refinery. There was then a serious IRA terrorism threat, and consequent heavy investment in refinery security. Peter’s experience of Royal Protection Duty was invaluable during the Queen Mother’s visit to the refinery in 1979. Peter and Jill moved in 1993 to Hadleigh where Peter became a diligent Secretary of the Royal British Legion. He was passionate about the Poppy Appeal, was a regular contributor to the Hadleigh Community News, and wrote a series of articles describing the strategy of battles on their anniversaries. He became Chairman of the Hadleigh Battle of Britain Association and was a founder member of Hadleigh Probus. Peter had been ill for some years before becoming housebound. Nevertheless, by a superhuman effort he managed to attend the Hadleigh Armistice Day ceremony in 2011. He died on 2 January 2012 and his military funeral was held at St. Mary’s Parish Church, Hadleigh on 27 January 2012. The RMP motto is Exemplo ducemus; by example, we lead – and Peter did.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard and an Ice Cream Sundae It is years and years since I went to the cinema. In fact, the last film that I saw there was “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. That was made on location upon the Greek isle of Kefalonia. We used to Summer at a villa on the neighbouring island of Ithaca. At the time it was a delight; unspoilt with crystal blue waters with a breeze and a swell in the afternoon. All of that is a thing of the past. I have always been a fan of Margaret Thatcher. She was in power during my formative years in which time I did much for the Conservative Party. I wanted to see the new film “The Iron Lady” and so took a trip to the cinema in Ipswich accompanied by a small entourage. How things have changed. I was politely told that there was no box and that I had to sit with everyone else. There was no usherette with a torch and no interval; no ice cream. All a sign of these rather perfunctory times. Hence the picture shows me with an ice cream sundae at the Harvester restaurant nearby the cinema - a functional no frills establishment but lovely ices. I watched the feature with great sadness as it looked back at Margaret Thatcher’s life from her current frail state. The opening scene was of Margaret Thatcher buying a pint of milk from a corner shop and fumbling in her purse for the 45 pence that it cost. “The Iron Lady” is a salutary tale that even the best and strongest of us can find ourselves in circumstances where it is very difficult to manage our own affairs. You, my readers know that one really should have in place a Lasting Power of Attorney. We can deal with that now rather long winded process on your behalf. Make an appointment straight away. The Lasting Power of Attorney has to be registered at the Office of the Public Guardian which is taking eight weeks or so. On the subject of cinemas, I do enjoy the odd visit to the Ipswich Light Organ Music Society at the Castle Hill United Reform Church on a Sunday afternoon. There have been some really great concerts. Nigel Ogden from Radio 2 The Organist Entertains and Robert Wolfe the resident organist at the Thursford Collection have given brilliant foot tapping performances. When my chauffeur Frank takes me out in the motor car I do receive salutes of all types from those outside and for which I am very much appreciative. As tea cups chinked from the trolley in the drawing room on Sunday afternoon, the sun was still setting at a little before 6. Those longer evenings are only just around the corner. Howard Gibbons

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Brrrrr! Even in my room it’s felt cold but, during the recent snow, looking out through the window it looks so temptingly inviting as I peer across the Brett Valley with it’s covering of deep snow and bright sun shine: so bright and fresh! Well, that is, until Charley and Rupert came into view, looking at me over the fence: with head and legs poking from under their warm coats, white beards and every breath visible: now I’m not so sure. I wasn’t sure whether they were looking at me in envy, or perhaps sad that I couldn’t be out with them: you never know with those two when they’re in the mind for mischief. Unfortunately, because of the snow our regular days have been disrupted which I know has disappointed many Riders. However, in true RDA fashion, two of our maintenance Helpers soon got to us and cleared the road so that Lyn and the Volunteers who look after us could easily get to the Centre to feed and water the Herd. Obviously, with the snow, I had time on my hoofs and decided to surf the Web and read the Centre’s latest Year Book (Copies are available from the Centre). Looking on The Shelley Centre Website I noticed that the Events Calendar for 2012 is now there and one or two interesting items caught my eye, so to speak. On 17th March there is an Antiques Sale at Stoke by Nayland Village Hall between 10 and 3 and if you enjoy the theatre, between 26th and 28th April, at the John Mills Theatre, Ipswich, Mega Brill Productions are staging ‘Two Plays’ for all to enjoy, so don’t forget to mark these events on your Calendar: both will raise funds for the Centre. As for our new Year Book, I’ve taken the liberty of extracting from it a specific case history of one of my Riders to give an example of how the Shelley “Family” is able to help mature Riders (That’s between my ear wigging and gazing through the window across ‘My’ valley). Michelle has Cerebral Palsy, her legs being more affected than her arms. She can walk a limited distance with walking sticks but, spends most of the time in a wheelchair. As a child and young adult she was able to ride a real horse but, can no longer do so and relies on me to help her: she did start with BABS, my companion mechanical horse. However, after six months, Michelle’s balance and sitting symmetry had improved so much that she was able to progress to riding me, being a greater challenge for her because I am more complex in that I emulate a real horse in all ways. Now, when riding me, not only can she walk and canter but, she can also control the reins to turn my head and pull for “Whoa”. It’s wonderful that with my being at Shelley, I am able to help Michelle with her mobility and every-day activities. Inflammation is Information None of us enjoy the pain associated with inflammation, but that does not change the fact that inflammation is a highly purposeful process. Bruno Van Brandt, Scientific Director of Heel Labs in Belgium says “Blocking the regulation mechanisms in the case of non-life threatening symptoms or conditions is biotherapeutically irresponsible”. Culturally we have evolved the mind-set that discomfort is utterly meaningless and without intrinsic value. Viewed in this light, cessation of a pointless nuisance is the only priority and we reach for the anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). And just because we can buy NSAIDs over the counter we assume they are perfectly safe; they are not. Concern over the negative effects of NSAID use focuses solely on incidences of acute and life-threatening bleeding in the gut. Not appreciated are the long term negative ramifications of derailing the natural repair processes of the body. The reality is that, like all ‘symptoms’, inflammation is both biologically purposeful, and ‘information rich’, if we understand its operation and the context out of which it arises. Disabling this and other natural processes of repair mortgages our long term health and is contributing to the increase in chronic inflammatory conditions across the population- including children. The evidence is mounting that our cultural over-emphasis on the shortterm effects powders, pills and potions is mis-placed. Dear Sir I took my dog for a walk and wandered down Frog Hall Lane leading toward the High School and the amount of litter was alarming! Plastic bags in the trees, crisp packets etc on the grass verges, plastic bottles thrown on the pathways. Along the lane opposite the school there is a sportsfield used by the pupils where there is a sign on the gate ‘No Dogs, dog fouling will result in a fine’ (quite right) and ‘photos will be taken and given to police’. But is it right that there is one law for dog owners and another for people who drop other forms of litter? I have spoken to the school and the Headmistress but things are as bad as ever. These young people will one day have children themselves so if they are not made aware of their surroundings what hope is there for the future? We live in a lovely town with beautiful countryside, let’s all pull together to keep it a pleasant place to be. Janet Bayliss

Dear Sir Support Your Local Garage! I would like to express my thanks to the staff and mechanics at Ainger Holbrow for their excellent level of customer service. I recently had to have a part replaced on my car which they did at a very reasonable price and quickly too. Unfortunately, the initial problem reappeared again a little while later, (due to the failure of the manufacturer's part NOT AH's work) and they were extremely diligent in rectifying the problem at no cost and in a super quick time, i.e. I left the car on their forecourt with a note on Sunday, and they called me at 8am the next morning to advise that it was sorted! Now where else do you get that kind of service? As a local driving instructor, my car is an essential work tool, (surprise, surprise!) and I, (and my students), cannot afford to be without it for long, so thank you very, very much guys, I know where the car will be serviced next! Fortunately they do have an alternative which for them is probably more appealing, their souls will be transported to the Tesco store at Copdock, there they can spend all of eternity wheeling their trolley through the aisles searching for 1p off of a tin of beans. If John seriously wants the Brett works site cleaned up, he should write to the owners of the site, as it is their responsibility, and they should not have deliberately run the site down. Have I missed something? Some months ago, unless I am going completely and utterly mad, I believe I took part in a local referendum which asked ‘Did I want Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils to Merge’ or words to that effect I seem to recall. I and the majority of people who responded in Babergh, 60.9% I believe, said ‘NO’, in my case because I doubt they will save money at all! I am now constantly reading in the EADT that the two councils are ‘merging this department’ and ‘merging that department’ - what was the point of the referendum? I suppose that’s democracy for you! On a lighter note myself and Mrs Keeper spent the day in London recently, travelling for the first time on one of Beestons day excursions, what a brilliant day we had. A comfortable ride down in a luxury coach, dropped off outside the theatre, a few hours shopping, a lovely lunch, an enjoyable musical and back onto the coach which was waiting for us outside the theatre at the end of the show for the journey home. Dear Sir I would like to bring to your attention the Aldham Road Bus Shelter, in my opinion it is put in the wrong place. It should be put on the piece of green next to the bus stop sign. I asked the driver if he would see me if I stood inside the shelter and his answer was NO. So I am forced to stand outside the shelter in the freezing wind so I wont miss the bus. Dear Sir On hearing two songs recently, ‘Slip Sliding Away’ by Paul Simon, and ‘Can't Stand Up But Keep Falling Down’ Elvis Costello, Reminds me of the past week, When we had snow, 15cm of the stuff. Its a cover up, what ever way you look at it! On one hand you have the dog poo the not so polite way of putting it! With their not so polite owners with their bad habit of leaving the stuff all over the pavements, and play area's now covered with the ice and snow, which has laid there all week, since February the 4th, till this day of my writing, February 13th. Why Oh! why have the pavements remained covered with snow and Ice!!! How many people like me have had to walk in the middle of the road to get from A to B? having put ourselves from one danger the pavements to walking on the roads. Is walking in the middle of the road a Hadleigh thing? as was done in by gone days, when cattle was driven along Hadleigh High Street, to the market place for sale!! We are not expected to do that in 2012 heaven for bid. I pay £1500 per year council tax, like all Tax Payers, I bet you would all like to know, what do we really get for our money, I know we get an Itemised bills at the start of the Tax year! Is Snow Clearing included, if so, why wasn't it done? BBC Suffolk are doing something which we should all take note of, ‘Don't Be A Tosser’ we people here in Hadleigh, need to tidy ourselves up, not all mind, using the LITTER BINS provided, by putting our waste litter, in these bins, or take the stuff home, with you. Children should have been taught at home, by their parents, from young. Schools have a role to play, as part of the education programme, teaching the children to be proud of their town, and county, and to have pride in themselves. p.s. Little Hall Museum is a medieval wool merchant’s house, garden and collection open to the public, owned by the Suffolk Building Preservation Trust and run entirely by volunteers. It was beautifully restored in the 1920s/1930s by the Gayer-Anderson brothers who filled the house with artefacts collected during their travels. Foster Carers needed to help meet growing need There are over 65,000 children who are â&#x20AC;&#x153;looked afterâ&#x20AC;? in the UK - children who are not able to live at home with their families and live either with other relatives or in foster care. The recipe, that is! Mumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Egg and Beany Pie (serves 4) Ingredients by Sarah Thompson 1 kilo potatoes for mashing (Co-ops Maris Pipers fit the bill nicely) 2 standard tins baked beans 4 large eggs, 1 medium onion (optional), Large portion of butter Method Preheat the oven at 220Â°c Peel and boil the potatoes for about 30 minutes. When they are soft enough, add the butter and mash to a creamy consistency. Hard boil the eggs for about 12 minutes. Let the eggs cool down and then slice them. Put the beans into a large casserole or glass dish. Add the sliced egg. Slice then fry the onion and stir into the mixture. Spoon the mashed potato on top and smooth down with a fork to seal in the ingredients. Pop the dish into the oven for about 30 minutes. Hey presto. A quick but hugely satisfying dish. News from The Station Dear Readers, Welcome to this months edition of news from the Police Station. For some weeks now, we have been liaising with the Show Secretary and Show Director for this years Hadleigh Show. As you may well be aware, this annual event is now in its 173rd year and continues to grow in popularity and size. With an anticipated attendance of 12,000 or more, it is likely that our roads within the Town will become blocked and progress by car will be minimal throughout the day. The show this year is taking place on Saturday 19th May, with the usual fairground operating the proceeding Friday evening. The sharp eyed amongst you may notice that this will coincide with the closure of the Lady Lane junction with the A1071 whilst work is completed on the new roundabout and access road for Persimmon Homes. Can I ask you all please to bare this in mind when travelling around the Town on show day. We are particularly keen to ensure that visitors to the show use the same route in and out of the Town, and for local residents to consider not using the High Street with their cars as we can hopefully then keep traffic free flowing. This might seem like an extremely early stage to be talking about May, but it is important for us to get the message out there so as people know what to expect over the show weekend. The Babergh East area is currently experiencing an abnormal amount of shed and garage break-ins. Sadly, we have had an increase in the Hadleigh area too. This serves as a timely reminder that we should all be thinking about making sure our outbuildings are locked and secured. Shed alarms can be purchased from most Police Stations for around £8, but there are a variety of devices on the market that can help you protect your property, and most DIY stores will be able to help you in finding the right product for you. Keep any windows obscured, and mark as many of your shed items as possible with a security pen or distinctive paint. I would also suggest that you make a note of any reference numbers found on power tools and equipment. If you are unsure how to secure your property, or would like more information or advice on security please contact us at the Police Station. Finally, we wave goodbye to two Sergeants in March who have steered and progressed the Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team over the last 18 months. Sergeant Ian Watson, who left the team in September, and Sergeant Colin Curtis both retire from Suffolk Police taking with them over 50 years of combined experience. Both have proved an asset to the team, and will be sadly missed. Our new Sergeant will be Chris Day who had been working on a response policing team in Ipswich prior to coming to work on the Team. Jerry’s Diary The cold snap only lasted a week, but came as no surprise to me. Never rule out any cold snaps until March is over. It was so mild during January, the arctic conditions must have caught out birds that had paired up too early. Birds were still singing in the cold snap. Many Wrens as well, the River Brett along Benton end was ice free in places. 5 Little Egrets, 20+ Snipe, 3 Green Sandpiper, 2 Woodcock, 14 Teal, 30+ Mallard and 4 Little Grebe were all seen here for a while. Brilliant Photograph! Many people had seen Redwings A Little Owl taken by Peter Cutts and Fieldfares feeding on berries in Lower Layham and apples in their gardens. A winter roost of 200+ Pied Wagtails in a Laurel hedge beside the CO-OP. Peregrine Falcons have been seen at Elmsett, Semer, Lindsey and Withermarsh Green. More Barn Owls reported from several parishes. I saw one being mobbed by a Common Buzzard along the pit road at Layham. Harsh weather will force Barn Owls to hunt in daylight hours, perhaps being targeted themselves by predators. The Great Grey Shrike at Lower Layham reappeared a few days before the snow came. It was showing well along the pit road, until at least 18th Feb. Another Shrike has been seen at Lakenheath. Nightingale Survey 2012 This survey will map all singing male Nightingales and compare numbers with the 1999 survey. 50+ singing males I found in 1999, all in the local patch, but I don’t think I will hear that many this time. Hadleigh Craft & Food Fair 25th March 2012 Easter is approaching and time to get some Easter presents or just treat yourself at our craft & food fair on the 25th March at the Town hall complex, market place in Hadleigh. Yet again we have filled all the halls full of handmade delights for all tastes and needs. We have children's bags to colour, cards and stationery, a range of jewellery for all ages, knitted items, home fashion accessories, soft toys, wood turning, handbags, pot pouri, books, glass wear, cosmetics, baby items, candles plus lots more. We have quite a few new stall holders this year as word has gone round about our craft fairs including gifts with a humorous touch which sell belly button cleaners, knickers made out of dusters and weather rocks. Also organic skin care products, sock monkeys, pop music and film memorabilia and studio portraits. And in our food hall we have cupcakes, preserves, home-made fudge and sweets, Indian pickles and also a choice of kitchen ware. The craft fair is open from 10am-4pm at the Town Hall complex in the Market Place with entrances at the main door opposite the Ram and also opposite St Mary's church (look out of the signs). Entry is £1 each with wheelchair uses 50p each (as limited access to 2 rooms) Children under 14 are free with paying adult. After you have had a good look around or maybe before you can pop in to the dining room to grab a lovely cup of coffee or tea or maybe try the soup of the day or treat yourself to some yummy cake. As I said all pitches are filled so it yet again looks like its going to be a fantastic day to come and have a look around. On the first day when the temperature had begun to rise after the snowy chill there was a large, enthusiastic audience for the U3A February meeting in the Ansell Room. The speaker, Carl Powell, gave a very interesting talk on the work of the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) and in particular their Garden Birdwatch Scheme. They have thousands of ordinary people all over the country keeping a weekly count of the birds seen in their gardens. The results are collated by BTO and used by other organisations such as RSPB to monitor the number and variety of birds using our gardens throughout the year. On 24 January a number of U3A members went to the Alfie Boe concert at the Regent. We were treated to a surprisingly wide range of musical entertainment, from Elgar to Lennon/McCartney, in addition to everyone's favourite show-stopping songs. Next Month’s talk on 12 March will be Henry’s Trials, the story of the rise and fall of Wandsworth Prison’s first chaplain. The Entertainments Committee distributed their proposed programme for outings during the coming months. Many members should have received it by e-mail but it will be reproduced in the March Newsletter. Bildeston History Quarterly Sales of this new history magazine for Bildeston has been most encouraging with copies flying off the shelf at Bank House Stores. I would like to thank proprietor Richard O’Sullivan for his support and Bildeston Parish Council, which has kindly conferred a start-up grant. Out now, Issue 2 includes the story of John Motte ‘local boy made good’ by guest contributor Dr. Nick Amor and a survey of Bildeston street names over the centuries. The series continue with Bildeston at the times of Domesday Book in ‘Lords of the Manor’ and a biography of rear Admiral James Cockburn in ‘Links with the Sea’. Bundles of title deeds have been loaned to me so that the series ‘Hidden Histories’ can continue and other historical documents relating to the village have also been made available. For example, income tax returns for 1871 show that for their work at Cosford Union Workhouse at Semer, Revd. Joseph Gedge (rector of Bildeston) received £63 as chaplain and the salary of Robert Growse (surgeon of Bildeston) was £110 in his capacity as medical officer. I would like you to make contributions to the magazine; these can be personal reminiscences or original research and, of course, letters are always welcome. Welcome to this months Police news item. KEY SAFE BOXES Home security is a matter of concern for every property owner, as is the safety of elderly and vulnerable relatives or neighbors who may live alone. For those who are dependent on family members or health workers, they may use a key safe box. A key safe is a box used to store keys externally, usually used for legitimate access to a home when the occupant is either too frail or simply unable to open the door to their home themselves. It may be because they are ill or cannot get up. In recent weeks there have been a small number of incidents in west Suffolk where key safe boxes have been broken into and then the key used to enter the house. Verity Line, Crime Reduction Officer for Suffolk Police said: “There are a number of key safe products on the market now but we would urge anyone looking to purchase one that the product reaches ‘secure by design’ status, which focuses on design and security, as well as the acknowledgement of quality of security products. “To maintain the security certification the box needs to be mounted on a brick wall and make use of all the masonry screws supplied with the product.” Suffolk Police is encouraging people who already own a key safe box to contact the company who made or installed the key safe directly, if they have any questions or concerns. If you find your key safe product missing or opened without the key, please report it to the police as soon as possible and change your locks immediately to ensure no one can enter your home using your key. Local Students Showcase Suffolk Talent Hadleigh Musicians Nic Keeble and Jake Redmon, along with Oscar Charlton from Felixstowe are organising an evening of some of Suffolk best musical and artistic talent. There will be music from 3 of Suffolk’s finest up and coming artists; Adam Moss, a 17 year old quirky acoustic pop singer/song writer whom is currently in the process of recording album number two. He also recently supported Matt Cardle on his UK tour (Find his debut album ‘Hold On’ on itunes). Joe Gibbings, a 17 year old acoustic/alternative/punk musician whom has just recorded his debut ep ‘Unconcious’ and is planning a music video for his first single ‘Pick Me Up.’ Ade Parkinson, a 20 year old alternative artist, born and bred in Hadleigh. The quick thaw on Monday 13th February came to our rescue so travelling, even from out of town, was very simple thank goodness, after a week of ice and snow. Our speaker for the February meeting was our own President, Mr John Rye, who spoke on the subject of the development of his garden from 1975 to the present day. Certainly no-one could accuse John or his wife Mary of being slouchers since moving into their virgin garden and all the usual horrors of the mess and muddle builders leave behind them. I can identify so well with this scenario of, in his case cast large slabs for retaining walls, in mine cutting vast quantities of 3/4” slabs for retaining walls and garden edging. When we moved in, in 1962, David was site engineer for Herts C.C. working on the Baldock bypass and decided to rescue the thrown out broken slabs used to pave the bridge embankments. They worked well and it certainly built my biceps but didn’t do much for his car springs! He also bought home about half a mile of abandoned contractors telephone wire very useful for training raspberries etc! So, back to John and his masterpiece. All those years of hard work and dedication have well and truly paid off as they have a wonderful garden of exciting levels and burgeoning growth of flowers, vegetables, fruit and shrubs - well done to you both and thank you John for the beautifully presented illustrated talk. News from the Garden At the time of writing I am frustrated. The Winter jobs were going so well, and then the snow and hard frosts came, and progress stopped. It is not a good idea doing pruning when there are hard frosts about, and those frosts in early February were the worst for some years. I have also had a problem with my greenhouse heating, which is in any case not set up to cope with the really hard frosts which we have had recently, so I shall find out in time how many plants will succumb, and how many will recover. The weather for the next few days looks better, so may be I shall get back on course again. Hopefully the frost will have killed off some of the garden pests, so it will be interesting to see what gives us gardeners most trouble this year. The RHS run an enquiry service, and at the end of each year publish a league table showing the 10 problems that have resulted in the most enquiries. Last year the order was :1 Slugs and snails 2 Cushion scale 3 Vine weevil 4 Ants 5 Viburnum beetle = 6 Fuchsia gall mite = 6 Cypress aphid = 8 Leek moth = 8 Chafer grubs = 8 Mealybugs = 8 Brown scale The interesting thing is that 4 of these I have never seen. These are Cushion scale (A scale insect affecting Camellias, Rhododendrons, and Euonymus and Holly ), Viburnum beetle ( Both larvae and adults feast on the foliage of viburnum tinus and opulus), Fuchsia gall mite (A mite that appeared in 2007 on the South coast and is spreading), and Cypress aphid (An aphid that sucks the sap on cypress shoots and causes dieback of the shoot). Weather Records We started the new year in January with 51.8 mm (2") of rain which is about average. In the last 3 months we have had 142.8 mm (5.6") of rain which is just short of average. This is not going to help much in filling up the reservoirs after the dry 2011. In January the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (55F) which is incredibly warm. In 2008 there was a maximum of 14 Cel, otherwise this was the highest back to 2000. The minimum was -2 Cel (32F), which is the highest again except for 2008. In my garden the ground temperature in mid February is 3 Cel (37F) . Hints This is the month when you need plenty of time. By the end of the month you are going to need to use your lawn mower if you have a lawn, so make sure it is in good working condition. Grass should be cut for the first time when it is 2" to 3" long. When you first cut it set the mower higher than you would use later in the season, and get it down to the height you want over 3 or 4 cuts. This is also a good time to tidy up the edges, and to reseed any bare patches. This is the time to prune your roses, but not when frosts are expected. Make sure you have a sharp pair of secateurs so that you get clean cuts. Start by cutting out any weak and spindly growth, and then cut the remaining strong growths back to an outward facing dormant bud. Cuts should be at an angle starting below the bud on the opposite side of the stem to the bud, and ending just above the bud on the bud side of the stem. This should stop stems dying back. It is not easy to suggest how long to leave stems now as there are so many types, but I would suggest halving the stem length would suit most common types, with one stem being cut shorter to promote new growth. Another little job to do as you walk around is to check that ties on trees and shrubs have not broken, and are not too tight. Good Gardening, John Rye

New Tennis Season Starts Soon Christmas is over and Valentine’s day too, the snow has been cleared, now get out your gear, coz’ the new season’s here! The club teams continue to enjoy success in the local tennis leagues, with the men’s team staying in their summer and winter divisions. The Ladies’ team also enjoyed success in both the winter and summer leagues, being promoted in both. The mixed team has been promoted to division 4 and also looks set to be promoted in the winter league too! So congratulations to the all the players involved, well done! As usual, the club will be staging numerous events in 2012 and the committee will be meeting soon to sort out dates, more about those In the next edition of the Community News. March will see Hadleigh Tennis club resuming play on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 9.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. Following this year’s AGM we are pleased to advise that annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (with a £10 discount if paid before April 30th). Newton Green’s Free Golf Initiative A new Girls in Golf initiative is being launched at Newton Green after success at an over subscribed event last year. Club professional Tim Cooper has been offered central funding from the sport’s governing bodies to enable juniors and adults to have free tuition. A large number of women who took up the option last year are about to return to the club to take up a course for improvers, prior to consider becoming full members of the ladies section. However, a new batch of beginner level classes as part of Newton’s Girls in Golf work will start in March. The six-week courses run on Saturday and Tuesday mornings, and include coffee and all necessary equipment. Free group beginner classes for boys and girls from five to 16 years also start on the first Saturday in March; with free improvers’ classes also shortly to be announced. Tim Cooper commented: “Because we are one of the most pro-active clubs in Suffolk looking to encourage people into the sport we have been granted exceptionally generous financial support.” Details are available on 01787-377217.

Winter and spring activities at Hadleigh Bowling Club We started Short-Mat bowling at the end of the outdoor season and our social roll-ups have been well supported, particularly on Tuesday afternoons. Although some of our members had played indoor and/or carpet bowls none of us had experience of Short-Mat, nevertheless we entered a team in the Ipswich League. From the start of the season to Christmas we tried to give as many members as possible matches, both home and away, so that they might appreciate what was involved; not unexpectedly our results were poor and we were bottom of the league. However, since New Year we have tried to put out stronger teams and results have improved a little and to date we have won three matches and had a few near misses. On the social side we have a race night on Saturday 3 March and members are asked to put their names on the board as soon as possible to help plan the catering. Our 2012 summer season starts with our opening drive and supper on 21st April but in the meantime we are holding a coffee and cake morning on Saturday 31 March at 10.30 to 12.00, to allow the members old and new to get together prior to the April opening. The unique feature of this event is that the cakes will be provided by the male members of the committee for a change and anyone who is thinking about joining, experienced or not, is welcome to come along to see what the club has to offer. We are in Stone Street just past the Donkey Bistro. For the novice and inexperienced bowlers we are holding open days on Saturday and Sunday the 28 and 29 April at 14.30 hrs, where our qualified coaches, male and female, will be available to give you an understanding of the game to get you started. Why not have a go, you might like it. Just a reminder that our traditional early season coffee morning organised by the Ladies Section will also go ahead on Saturday 5th May 10.30 to 12.00 and will have the usual array of stalls including plants, coffee, tea and cakes. All are welcome.

Dixon Dart League Although still mathematically possible it looks like there will be new Division One Champions as the Legion Legends narrowly beat their nearest rivals the George A 6-5, the George side were 5-4 up with two to play, but wins from Mick and Ted Harvey secured the victory for the Legends.The Eight bells still have high hopes of finishing in third place in front of the Ram Jets, but with a tough couple of games left against the George A and the Legion Legends its still all to play for. Ivan Clements deserves a mention as he hit back to back 180â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in his win at the Ram Jets. Division two looks like its going to be a last match decider, with the British Legion Dawes having a slender two point advantage over Naughton Wheelers with two to play. We have unbeaten players in both divisions at time of going to print, with Paul Leathers from the Eight Bells in division one, and Jack Bambling for the British Legion Dawes in Division two both on 12 wins. Highest checkout is still with Chris Cowan from the Ram Jets at 144. It has been an exciting and busy start to the year for the newly formed Boxford Bike Club. The informal meetings of a couple of riders on a Sunday morning turning into a forward looking, organised and official cycling club, with a ever growing membership of over 30 riders. At the beginning of January the club became affiliated to British Cycling, the national body for cycling in the UK. This affiliation has brought with it many benefits, including insurance for the club and its members as well as advice and support. The club has also taken delivery of their snazzy new club kit, which is now being proudly worn by club members. The popularity of the club, in some part stems from the accessible nature of the rides we organise. The club's hour long introductory ride, which leaves the village at 9.30am on a Sunday morning, remains a popular choice for those new to the sport, or just starting off. Those wanting more of a challenge leave the village at 8 o'clock for a longer ride. Although the majority of club rides are road rides, we have organised regular off road or mountain bike rides, making use of the tracks and trails which surround Boxford. Our Wednesday night ride heads out from the village at 7pm and will undoubtedly become more popular as the evenings become lighter. Please contact the club if you are interested in joining us on one of these rides. To help organise and promote the club we have recently launched an exciting new club website which can be found at www.boxfordbikeclub.co.uk. On this site you can find more information about rides, events and membership. We can also be found on Facebook, search for ‘Boxford Bike Club’, and on Twitter @boxfordbikeclub. Although it is still relatively early in the cycling calendar, members have already taken place in various cycling events. The Interbike sportive at Mark Tey saw members complete the relatively hilly (for Essex) 50 mile route, in pleasing times. The more competitive winter mountain bike race series in Thetford saw members compete in the 2 hour race. The freezing fog engulfing the riders for most of the race! As well as taking part in cycling events this year the club will be organising its own events. The first of these will be the Boxford Tornado Sportive on Sunday 15th April. This non-competitive event will consist of 3 signposted routes of 20miles, 40miles and 60miles leaving from the playing fields in Boxford and using the pavilion as the event headquarters. Hopefully this event will attract riders from Boxford, but also riders from further afield. Entry to this event will include free post ride refreshments and access to a carefully chosen scenic routes, that will take advantage of the quiet and picturesque rural roads and lanes which surround Boxford. For more details about this event go to the club's website. In addition the club is organising a family jubilee ride, to take place on the Monday morning of the Boxford jubilee celebrations on the 4th June. This shorter 6mile route will take in landmarks, churches and pubs in Boxford, Groton and Edwardstone, and will involve the children in a treasure hunt activity. The ride will end in Boxford in time for the jubilee celebrations starting at midday. We are really excited about playing our small part in these village celebrations. All of this would not have been possible without the considerable support of two Boxford based organisations that have both contributed financially to help the development of the club. Both the Gareth Weiland Memorial Fund and the Boxford Community Council have awarded grants to the Boxford Bike Club. The money from Gareth Weiland Memorial Fund being used to help design and produce a club kit, affiliate the club to British cycling, and to cover any costs associated with organising and running our own cycling events. The money from the Community Council being used to cover the costs of the new club website. The club members are all extremely grateful to both organisations for their support. Over 140 children aged from 6 to 15 now actively participate and enjoy playing the game and competing on an even playing field with many other clubs in Suffolk and Essex. The club, along with Eastern Counties representatives, held a celebratory evening in February to thank some of the coaches and administrators of the junior section of the club with special awards and trophies for their special contribution.

Free Golf Lessons For Ladies Free group lessons for lady beginners are being sponsored by Golf Mark at Newton Green Golf Club. Golf Mark, promoted by the English Golf Union, recognises beginner friendly clubs, and has graded Newton a high achiever.
