DOES HADLEIGH WANT TO KEEP ITS HIGH STREET? Hadleigh has one of the few remaining traditional High Streets in the Country, it has retained small independent shops alongside the Co-op supermarket and together over the last century they have changed to meet the changing trends of the decades. Unlike most of the country we have not needed governments and celebrities to ‘re-vitalise’ our shops nor are we full of charity shops and boarded up ex-shops. 92% of our High Street buildings are listed and are of no interest to the large national traders and are only of commercial use for small independent shops. If Morrisons perform the task of keeping the estimated 80% of monies that is spent in supermarkets in the towns surrounding Hadleigh and our other shopping patterns do not change then our High Street would survive. Unfortunately since they have opened, the shops in our High Street and surrounding villages have taken a serious fall in custom, the
amount of losses they are suffering would make headlines if they were one of the national stores. We read quarterly of the one or two percent losses of companies like Tesco, and the concerns as their share prices drop. How loud would they scream if they were suffering the fifteen to 40 percent dop in customers our independent shops are sustaining at the moment. They could not continue trading with those losses, so can our shops survive? If we want to keep our High Street then we need to return to our preMorrisons shopping patterns, we either use our High Street shops or say goodbye to them.

New Owners for PG Laundry Services After 8 years of building up the business Martin and Fiona Crabtree are stepping aside, and PG Laundry Services is under new ownership. Martin and Fiona started the business 8 years ago at Semer Business Park, but it quickly expanded from a fast 24 hour ironing service to a full laundry and dry cleaners requiring bigger New owner Amelia Kelly with some premises, so within 14 of the PG team months it had moved to Byford Court, opposite the Recycling Centre, in Hadleigh. This provided more room for expansion, and the business has gone from strength to strength. “We have had huge support from local people and on a personal basis we could not have achieved all this without our excellent team of staff, who are all staying with the new owners” says Fiona. The new owners, Amelia and Ciaran Kelly, take over with a wealth of business experience, and plan to continue the PG work ethic – a fast quality service and excellent customer care. Amelia, like Fiona, will be running the business on a completely hands on basis along side the PG team, so little will change other than an expansion of services offered.
East Bergholt Dramatic Society East Bergholt Dramatic Society is proud to announce their next production – ‘Improbable Fiction’ by Alan Ayckbourn, at 8 pm in the Constable Hall, East Bergholt on 18th, 19th & 20th April 2013. This recently written comedy is about a writers' circle, on the night the chairman, Arnold, seems to wander into the imaginations of the other writers. Ayckbourn, as usual, produces some lively, well-written characters that we can all relate to. Another very enjoyable play by this popular local drama group that you should not miss. Bookings taken in advance by telephone to 07891974844 or 01206 396674. Tickets will be on sale £6 if bought in advance from East Bergholt Post Office or Capel St Mary PO from late March; £7 on the door.

St Patrick’s Day - Here on Sunday 17th March! Welcome to the first newsletter for all those interested in the restoration of the mill at Kersey set in the heart of the delightful Suffolk countryside. When Alison and I became the proud owners of the mill we had little idea of the support and guidance we have been receiving since an early appeal for help. There have had a number of people who worked the mill getting in touch one visitor, a Mr. Fred Richardson, now in his 90's, who remembers the mill working - as a young child he can recall collecting flour for local bakers with his father. Our aim is to get the mill in to working order in the not too distant future and grind our own flour – with regular open days to visitors and school groups. Thank you all who have made offers of help and should you have any old photographs of the mill, or memories, please get in touch. We see the mill as a sleeping beauty just waking to show off her deeper spirit of place we know she has been hiding away for so many years and with your help we can make this a reality. Stephen de Lara-Bell The Challenge The mill last worked in 1929 and soon fell in to disrepair – becoming a dumping store for unwanted tools, rubbish and furniture. Some time ago the lead was stolen from the roof valley allowing torrents of rain to do so much damage to the mill it was feared that, at one point, the roof and top floor would collapse into the rooms below. Thankfully swift intervention on taking on the mill saved the upper floors for now. There is much water damage with support timbers reduced, in places, to the size of a match stick. To stabilise and repair the timber frame is the first job needed to be undertaken in the restoration of the mill. The first of many challenges is to draw up the list of timbers with sizes before we source them as close to the mill as possible as the original builders would have done. The floors would be the next to restore as here too the water ingress has done its worst. Chris Hulcoop, from Suffolk Mills, will be advising on the complex restoration of the machinery as the timber frame is restored and leading a dedicated group of able volunteers. As the building is made watertight, timber frame made good and the floors repaired we will also be working on what some people see as the icing on the cake – getting the water wheel and gearing working to turn the millstones once again…now that is a real challenge. From the repair and replacement of the ring gear wheel wooden teeth to the paddles on the main undershot wheel it will take time and money - yet the effort will see the mill back in working condition for many more years to come. With the ever increasing cost of electricity there is also the possibility that the mill could also produce enough electricity for the complex businesses. As the project moves forward we shall be sending out a newsletter to update interested individuals, groups and businesses so if you want to receive the next newsletter please let us know. Thank you for reading and do get in touch if you are able to volunteer, make a donation or provide memories of the mills – working or not. Early Spring at Orchard Barn At Orchard Barn we are always keen to know about and support local craftspeople. We also like to read the weather, so when Peter Houghton offered to design and make OBee a weathervane we were delighted. In his early years, Peter studied Art and Design in Brighton, a talent that he didn't have time to fully utilise until he retired. Now he has more time on his hands, Peter is making great use of his early skills by designing and making beautiful weathervanes (as well as woodcarving, but that is another story). The Orchard Barn weathervane design features our orchard fruit - cherries, plums, pears and apples. We look forward to erecting it on our roof and reliably reading the direction of the wind as well as enabling you all to see Peter's wonderful handiwork. If you would like to learn basic woodworking skills, why not come along to one of our FREE workshops? These are to be held on 13 and 27 April (both Saturdays) from 10am to 4.30pm, and you will be helping to make blackboards and display boards for use at our site. Our tutor will be Tom Castell (see photo) who started as a volunteer at OBee 3 years ago and has since undertaken several courses, helped out with loads of projects and set up his own business. Now that the days are drawing out we are preparing the barn and site for a busy spring when the ambience of the old orchard and traditional barn will be enjoyed by more visitors, some of whom may well be less mobile. We would very much appreciate your help with the pre-spring tidy-ups on Wednesdays. Getting involved as an OBee volunteer gives you the opportunity to get out and about with like-minded folk, doing something that will help you get fitter and more active. There are a range of jobs from wheel-barrowing compost to gentle pruning to stacking deadwood. Can't make a Wednesday? We also meet some Saturdays to progress projects such as greenwood-working, brickwork and carpentry. Please let us know if you would like to come and help out at this community project. For more information, or to attend any events, please contact Sarah at sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or 01473-658193/ 07766054042 More information can be found on our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline Mid Suffolk Link At the time of writing at the beginning of February we have learnt that whilst it may be cold here, in Belarus where our children come from temperatures have been as low as minus 30 degrees. Despite these terribly cold temperatures the schools remain open and many children will be walking for up to half an hour each day to go to school. Most children will have a basic mobile phone so their parents (who are generally working from early morning till late evening) can keep in touch but at these temperatures many phones will simply not operate, even diesel which does not freeze turns to sludge making any form of transport difficult to say the least‌‌‌‌If you have any children who may have a warm winter coat they have grown out of we would be really grateful if you would consider donating them to us, all sizes are appreciated as many of the children coming in the summer have brothers and sisters at home. Coming up on March 16th is our annual Easter Bunny Chocolate Bingo. Do remember that this was sold out in November so please get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are always available from the Charity Shop, The Stowmarket Tourist Office or by calling 01449 760343 or 07974 424374. Full details of this event can be found in the fundraising section of our website at: www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk. Golf Players Wanted! On May 20th we will be holding our Annual Charity Golf Day at Waldringfield Golf Club. We are looking for entries from Teams of four but if you are a solo player we will be able to introduce you to others who would like to make up a team. You do not have to be a brilliant Golf Player, just be willing to enter into the spirit of the day. There will be a hot bacon roll and coffee welcome with a “Shotgunâ€? start fo the golf. Refreshments will be served around the course and the day finishes with a two course meal and a Charity Auction and “Super Raffleâ€? If you are interested in finding out more about the above events, our Charity in general, Hosting or helping with the children please do feel free to get in touch. Best wishes to all and thank you, Elizabeth Parker, Link Chair

Calling all former members of 4 Group Royal Observer Corps! The ROC Association is delighted to announce the reformation of the No. 4 Group (Colchester) ROCA branch. Formed in 1925, the Observer Corps was vital to Britain’s air defence during the Battle of Britain as the eyes and ears of the RAF, and as a result earned its Royal title in 1941. For the remainder of the Second World War the ROC played its part in the war effort, and continued to serve throughout the dangerous Cold War years as part of the UK Warning & Monitoring Organisation. The ROC’s posts and group HQ’s stood down in 1991, with the remaining Nuclear Reporting Cells following in 1995, however the spirit and comradeship of this 70 year old organisation has remained strong across the UK in the many branches of the ROCA, and the annual reunion. No. 4 Group served a large geographic area from North London to Cambridge, taking in Suffolk, Essex and the eastern areas of Hertfordshire. If you served as a member of 4 Group ROC and would be interested in joining this newly reformed branch of the ROC Association, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Membership is open to those who served in the Royal Observer Corps while family members of former personnel and those with in an interest in the Corps’ history are also very welcome to join us as associate members. The newly reformed 4 Group branch is currently in the early stages, but a warm welcome awaits you! can email For more information you us at: roca4group@rocketmail.com or contact the 4 Group ROCA secretary on 01449 258645 or 07791 649751. Hare Coursing in Layham Since 2005 hare coursing has been illegal in this country but it has a long history as a pastime for landowners in the British countryside. Jeffrey Ward who lives in Colchester has provided photographs of his father Stanley who was employed by Major G.E.F. Tenison in the 1940s as a greyhound trainer. Major Tenison (ex 3rd Dragoon Guards) owned an estate in Northern Ireland as well as Overbury Hall in Layham. During his years there he kept greyhounds in the buildings now owned by the Essex and Suffolk Hunt. It was Stanley Ward’s job to look after the dogs and to train them for coursing. The photograph above shows Stanley with three of the dogs probably standing in the kennels yard. The photograph on the left (taken in 1947) shows three competing dogs at a hare coursing event with Stanley in the foreground. The picture is captioned “Waiting for the slips” and refers to the handler letting the dog free when a hare is seen. The third photograph below shows, from the left, the Marquess and Marchioness of Bath, Lord Stavordale, Stanley Ward, Mr Dunn and Mr Harcourt Wood between courses at a meeting.
Open coursing took place in open fields – the objective of the event was to test and judge the athletic ability of the dogs rather than kill the hare. The hounds were known as ‘sight hounds’ as they were trained to follow by sight not by scent. I wonder if any of the readers of this article remember these coursing events taking place or maybe even helped in some way. If you can tell us anything more please contact Michael Woods on 01473 823798 or email: michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net. Thank you

Howard in the heart of Hadleigh As I write this column I am delighted that it is staying lighter longer in the evenings and Spring is on its way. There are though more serious matters that concern me in that Hadleigh as a vibrant town is under threat of cataclysmic proportions. As I briefly mentioned in my last column, the Morrisons supermarket had just opened. You will know that I am about in Hadleigh all the time whether on foot or with Frank my chauffeur. One is immediately conscious that since the arrival of Morrisons you my readers are no longer in the Town. I understand that you are also forsaking the shops in the villages. The new supermarket has had an immediate impact upon the Co-op which appears only ever now to have a handful of customers. As a result the footfall to the other shops in the High Street has evaporated. It is self-evident that the future viability of the shops in the High Street is “on the edge” even as I pen this piece. Hadleigh has a proud history and through all the changing scenes of life, it has evolved. Do you want to see “the Town” struggle, gasp and die. I certainly do not. If shops become empty, rental levels will fall and the capital values of the properties will follow. Who will want to site a business or come shopping in a place that has nothing. Hadleigh has an Aladdin’s cave in Partridges, there are two good butchers and Andrews in particular has won prizes for being the best in the Eastern Region. Partridges Farm Shop, the Post Office, the Idler, the Delicatessen, Aingers the garage, the banks, Frosts and Mortons the Estate Agents, Threadneedle the dressmaking shop, the Co-op, Greggs the bakers, Avis the newsagent and printers, Patels the newsagents and Gwinnells the Undertakers to name but a few of our shops. Morrisons may sell stamps but it will not provide all the other services to be found in our Post Office and the whole range of goods in the shop there. So what is to be done. In short, the answer lies with you. I would urge you to think as you shop. Whilst you may enjoy some of the convenience of Morrisons do make sure that you also visit your Town and use your shops and the shops in your villages. Enjoy the service that you get there. Without commerce the Town has little and we will all be the poorer. Please carry these words around with you and make sure that Hadleigh is not another casualty of the modern age. Thank you for entering my competition in such numbers and I will announce the winner in my next column. If you haven’t got a Will or a Lasting Power of Attorney perhaps now is the time to pay me a visit. Happy Easter! Howard Gibbons

East Anglia has had a history of dissent since the 14th century. Non-conformist martyrs like Thomas Bilney, once a curate in Ipswich and Rowland Taylor, Rector of Hadleigh, (who was burned at the stake on Aldham Common in 1555), proclaimed their right to spread their doctrines of reform. Cambridge University in the 16th century was a centre for the spreading of the teachings of the Protestant Reformers, especially those of Martin Luther. These teachings were based upon the doctrines of Justification by Faith, without the mediation of a priest; and the doctrine that followed from it – the Priesthood of all Believers. Mary Tudor, like her father Henry the V111, rigorously persecuted them. Despite this, the Reform Movement, including Puritanism, grew from strength to strength and reached a culmination under Cromwell and the Commonwealth. With Charles 11 came a violent reaction against the Reformers. One writer wrote ‘the societies that survived retired from public view; met in secret and performed by stealth, the rites of their simple faith’ . Understandably records for this period are scarce. It is believed that Nonconformity began in Monks Eleigh about the year 1644. The title of Monks Eleigh chapel was registered in this year. Samuel Mailes was Rector of Monks Eleigh from 1644-60. Samuel Mailes had been a Presbytarian appointment and therefore in the reformed tradition. He resigned at the Restoration in favour of his son-in-law. Reverend Miles Burkitt, an incumbent at Hitcham was ejected after the Restoration. He was also later ejected from a living in Norfolk in 1662. Reverend Burkitt had previously purchased the Manor of Monks Eleigh from the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury and had spent considerable sums of money in improving it. He was deprived of possession because of his non-conformity and could get no redress. This indicates there must have been a considerable reforming influence in Monks Eleigh at that time. There are records of non-conformist work in the village from 1820, when on the 11th November of that year, William Winter Annetts of Bury St Edmunds, Minister of the Gospel, certified that the dwelling of Thomas Wright, labourer, should be set apart for the religious worship of Protestant Dissenters. William Winter Annetts was a Weslyan, the second Minister in the Bury Circuit at that time. In 1824 a Mr William Faiers converted a barn that he owned for worship. For some 18-19 years it was supplied by members of the Bury Weslyans, but later, because of distance and available friends, they were unable to continue this work. The Plymouth Brethren and the Methodists carried on working there during the period 1824 to 1845 when the building was purchased by John Ansell and reopened in connection with Hadleigh Congregational Church. At a Church Meeting at Hadleigh in 1855 it was decided to make Monks Eleigh a branch church. In 1862 the property was put in Trust. About 1863 there was a chapel Day School in Monks Eleigh. After it closed, an old desk was given to the ‘Museum of East Anglian Life’. In 1920 the School room was renovated as the Chapel War Memorial and a plaque was erected listing all the local people who died during the First World War. Because there were large numbers of people worshipping in the chapel it was decided additional accommodation was needed. Local members raised 63 pound and in 1870 the new chapel was opened, debt free, at a cost of 350 pounds. The small chapel was then used for Sunday School work. During World War 2 the Home Guard met in the old school room. In 1943 six of the chapel windows were damaged during an air raid. The cost of the repairs was covered by War Damage Compensation. The Scouts and Guides also used the building. Both chapels were completely refurbished in 1993. THE MANSE: The Manse is an old Hall House of a particular kind, so called because the hall, or main room was placed at one end of the long side, with a parlour, kitchen and pantry close to it. This type of house was the most usual pattern throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in the English countryside. The L shape is seen in nearly all the Suffolk farmhouses of this period. From 1880 to 1961 the Manse was the home for Ministers of the URC. The Roberts’ family have lived in the Manse since 1971. FUTURE PLANS: It is hoped that a Retreat Centre will be established in the original small chapel in 2013. Sylvia Watson
Jerry’s Diary Is there any hope of stopping even further decline in the numbers of Swifts that breed here during the summer. From what I have seen, ‘no’ would be the answer. Not with all the re-roofing programmes that many local councils are carrying out on their properties. Babergh District Council are now commencing on their own re-roofing programme, on my house and many others in the Hadleigh area. I have had 2 pairs of Swifts that have bred behind the eaves for as long as I can remember, 40 years plus. The other seven houses in the row also have Swifts breeding, along with House Sparrow and Starlings. I think the main problem with the re-roofing programme is the PVC fascias that are fitted tight against the eaves, not leaving any gaps where the Swifts used to gain access to the eaves. Loft insulation should not be pushed into the fascias and soffit areas, as this will also obstruct any entry point. The Swift is another declining species and such big re-roofing programmes in our towns and cities where Swifts are breeding is not good news for the Swifts as they are particularly sensitive to sudden changes in the next site, and don’t take too quickly to new access gaps. It would be much better to retain the old access holes and fit an internal Swift nest box. Most people have no knowledge of Swifts breeding in their properties so roofing work is carried out without realising the impact on the Swift population. More care needs to be taken and observations by bird watchers and bat and bird surveys taken during the summer months before any work is done on roofs. Then if any bats or Swifts are found nesting nest boxes can be fitted. But if peoples negative attitude towards these birds along with the Housemartin nesting on their houses continue then things will only get worse for them. One good thing is that there is hope for the Swifts that lodge with me, as Babergh Council have asked the contractors to provide Swift boxes for my property, so that’s a start. Let’s hope the Swifts use them. I’m sure that the Swifts will notice that their nest site has changed from hundreds of feet up in the sky when they return back in May. Jerry

Having watched Notting Hill recently, I was reminded about how Richard Curtis manages to combine brilliant writing with understated philanthropy. With that in mind, let’s all do something nice for Red Nose Day. Here is a tried and trusted recipe, but if all this seems like too much effort, try the current offer on 10 mini sponge cakes for £1 from the Co-op, together with some Betty Crocker vanilla ready - made by Sarah Thompson icing. Add your own decorations, big red noses etc. and nobody will be any the wiser! Red Velvet Cupcakes Makes: 12 Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Ingredients 60g unsalted butter at room temperature, 150g caster sugar, 1 egg, 20g cocoa powder, 4 teaspoons red food colouring, ½ tsp vanilla extract, 120ml buttermilk, 150g plain flour, ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda, 1½ tsp white vinegar. For the frosting: 50g unsalted butter, at room temperature, 125g cream cheese, cold. 300 g icing sugar, sifted. Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3. 2. Put the butter and sugar in an electric mixer or use a handheld electric whisk and beat on medium speed until light, fluffy and well mixed. Turn mixer up to high and slowly add egg. Beat until everything is well incorporated. 3. In a separate bowl, mix together cocoa powder, red food colouring and vanilla extract to make a very thick, dark paste. Add to the butter mixture and combine thoroughly until evenly mixed. Add half the buttermilk slowly. 4. Beat until well mixed, add half the flour and mix until everything is well incorporated. Repeat process until all the buttermilk and flour has been added. Turn mixer up high and beat until you have a smooth mixture. Turn mixer to low, add bicarbonate of soda and vinegar and beat until well mixed. Beat again on high speed for a further 2 minutes. 5. Make the frosting by beating the icing sugar with the remaining 20g of the unsalted butter until the mixture comes together well. Add the cream cheese in one go and beat it until it is completely incorporated. Continue beating until the frosting is light and fluffy, at least five minutes. Do not overbeat, as it can quickly become runny. 6. Spoon the mixture into 12 paper cases or greased 12 hole cake tin until two-thirds full and bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the sponge bounces back when touched. Leave the cupcakes to cool slightly in the tray before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely. When cupcakes are cold, spoon or ice cream cheese frosting on top.

SESAW Spring is just around the corner and the Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare diary is already full of fund raising dates but extra volunteers are needed to put up posters, assist at sales and supermarket collections or transport donated goods. If you can spare a few hours occasionally, please phone 01206 799424 or visit us in Stoke Road, Leavenheath, Wednesday to Sunday between 10am to 1pm. You will be helping to provide much needed income to ensure the animals' welfare, including Joseph and Mary, two beautiful cats, dumped just before Christmas. I am sad to see they are still with us and hope someone is going to offer them a loving home very soon. The new Morrisons Supermarket in Hadleigh has kindly agreed to host a new animal food collection bin for us. Adding one or two tins of cat or dog food to your shopping basket is an easy way to help the SESAW animals. You can drop them into our small wheelie bin sited on your right hand side against the cafeteria wall as you leave the checkout. I'm off to my bed by the Aga to count up my hoard of lost property. If you lose your pen or spectacles at SESAW, come and see me, Kenny "the Boss" Chihuahua!

Pause for Thought I am reflecting back on my past as we have been married fifty years this month. I wonder how the years went by and we never even noticed them passing. We also wonder at the many advances in technology. On our wedding day we received telegrams delivered by a telegram boy. Now it's emails, mobile phones, text messages and Skype. In my reflections I can see the hand of God who never changes, who is the same yesterday, today and forever. This God has been our constant companion all these years; on occasions we have distanced ourselves from Him, but He has always been there for us. We come with grateful hearts for His love and care all of our married lives. I leave you with one of the telegrams: Proverbs 3 v 5 & 6: 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.' Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 6 (Spring 2013) price £3 Available at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer and Keith Avis Issue 6 Spring 2013 Price £3 Newsagent in Hadleigh The miniature portrait of a young woman dressed in the height of late 18th century fashion appears on the front cover. Although she lived in Bildeston for less than a year, her death prompted a local poet to pen verses about her. In the last issue, the history of Bildeston School was traced back to 1595 and now, the inside story is told ‘From the headmasters log book, 18871929’. Bad behaviour, absenteeism, dirty WC seats and special treats were all recorded in the book, which is in the care of Suffolk Record Office at Bury St. Edmunds. ‘Hidden Histories’ looks at a thatched cottage, while Susan Beaumont, who lived in Chapel Street, is the first subject in the new series ‘17th century people’. In 1993, Myrtle Gardiner, former teacher at Monks Eleigh School, recalled her childhood in Bildeston High Street where her father ran a butcher’s shop and ‘Bildeston on the map’ tells the story of Richard Wilson’s stud farm and reveals the reason why Paddocks Way is so named. Thanks to a start-up grant received from Bildeston Parish Council, I have been able to obtain permission from the National Portrait Gallery in London to reproduce a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I’s favourite, whose biography is told in ‘Lords of manor: the Devereux family’. I would like to invite you to make contributions that can be either personal reminiscences or original research and, of course, letters are always welcome. I hope that you enjoy reading Bildeston History Quarterly as much as I enjoy putting the magazine together. Sue Andrews
Henry Morphew (1928-2013) I would like to pay tribute to Henry, who died recently aged 85. He lived in Bildeston all his life, having been born in the Bildeston part of Nedging Tye before changes in 1934 moved the parish boundary further westwards. Henry went to school at Station Road in Hadleigh, where he bacame very interested in history. He was self-taught expert at reading 16th and 17th century handwriting with all its abbreviations and other idiosyncrasies, which gave him the skill to transcribe Bildeston’s parish registeres and manorial court books. When I was asked to write a guide to St Mary Magdalene’s Church in 1985, Henry was only too happy to share his knowledge with me, which I much appreciated. Many people will remember Henry as office manager at Brook Farm Garage (Taylor’s) in Bildeston, where he presided over a very large black typewriter. During retirement, he contributed articles to Bildeston Bugle. Henry will be missed about the village doing his shopping and visiting the King’s Head. Sue Andrews

Tesco’s Hadleigh plan threatens Co-op and independent stores, new report states. Greens say this spells “disaster” for High Street Allowing the proposed new Tesco at Hadleigh’s Brett Works site Morrisons store is likely to lead to the closure of the Co-op and up to two other stores on the High Street, according to a new report commissioned by Babergh District Council. But the report, commissioned by Babergh Council and written by consultants Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners, says that these closures are “unlikely to harm the vitality and viability of Hadleigh town centre.” Without any evidence, it claims that the new Tesco’s car park will draw extra customers in from outside town who will venture onto the High Street to buy things they can not get at Tesco. Robert Lindsay, a Bildeston parish councillor and co-ordinator of Babergh Green Party said: "The consultants appear blind to the fact that most people, when they've filled their car boot with supermarket produce, want to drive straight home to put it in the fridge. "The London-based consultants also fail to mention that drawing new customers to Tesco from outside town will take custom away from village shops such as those at Bildeston, Monks Eleigh and Polstead. "Smaller, family-run, independent stores employ more people per £1 of sales, use more local suppliers, plough more of their earnings back into the local economy and are more loyal to their staff and their area than stock market listed giants with remote shareholders such as Tesco and Morrisons.” "Having three boarded up, empty shops on Hadleigh High Street, including the Co-op, will be a disaster for the town. New tenants will be hard to find and the shops could remain empty for months, if not years. This would blight the High Street, driving it into a spiral of decline." He added: “We would also seriously question the independence of the consultants Nathaniel Lichfield given that their website openly claims Tesco as a client.” Contact Robert Lindsay 01449 741959

Our East Anglian showroom, is situated on the Essex and Suffolk border, in Bures. It boasts one of the largest permanent displays of quality plantation teak garden furniture. If you visit us you have the opportunity to browse and try out all the garden furniture on display. All items can be mixed and matched. Any purchases made can be delivered immediately or at your convenience. Bloomfield Furniture, which in 2013 are celebrating their 10th year supplying quality teak furniture, is owned and managed by Richard and Noreen Bloomfield. We offer a hands on personal service and endeavour to make your garden furniture buying smooth and as easy as possible. If you are unable to visit and you require any information, about stock or delivery, please do not hesitate to contact us. Teak is one of the worlds most valuable timbers. It has a naturally high oil and rubber content, which makes it extremely durable and resistant to rotting when exposed for many years to extremes of both summer and winter. It is resistant to wood worm and it is these qualities that for centuries have made teak the first choice for decking, construction and the finest garden furniture. The teak used in our furniture comes from plantations created by the Dutch 200 years ago and which are now controlled by the Indonesian government which ensures new planting for a continuing supply. Teak does not require any protective coating, and the use of applied oils is purely cosmetic and will not extend the life of the furniture. Our furniture is guaranteed for one year from the date of purchase against breakage, other than caused by misuse. Phew! With the weather improving and Riders being able to go outside I’ve at last time to take a breather! And what do I find as I look around my room but a copy of the new Shelley Yearbook, so being a bit inquisitive, I decided to take a read and good it is too. One item that drew my attention has been written by Sally Nielson, a relatively new Instructor from the Tuesday Group, about her day as an Instructor. It is really interesting to read of her whole experience and I recommend it to you but, as space is at a premium and our Riders come first I thought her insight into their development will demonstrate what the RDA is all about and the underlying benefits to those who ride with us. Sally writes “Our first Riders, a group of four adults, have been coming to The Centre for 20 years. Over this period we have been encouraging independent riding, with greater variety of pace and activity. The ride starts and I notice during our exercises that one of the Riders moves more easily, responds more actively, stretches further than previously – how exciting! We ride on, and I might notice greater response to an instruction, an improved seat, or more effective use of reins – small but significant developments. Each confirms for me the absolute value of our efforts”. Sally writes of her second ride “……this is a ride of four small boys between 4 and 7 years old, so it’s another period of concentrated, busy team activity……Each of the boys has a diagnosis of Autism, and all started riding with us 18 months ago. At first, they were extremely fearful of this new experience and, indeed, of the ponies. At times, we even wondered if riding would ever become a beneficial therapy for these boys – they have proved us so wrong! They now ride with obvious enjoyment and enthusiasm, even independently. Today we even manage a few steps of trot! What a joy, what a privilege to watch the courageous progress of these boys, and to see their smiles of pleasure at new achievements. The time just seems to race away”. Well, what do you think? Yes, to us the improvements appear but minor steps but, to many of our Riders these are momentous breakthroughs bringing both enjoyment and confidence and as this confidence grows, aided by Sally and her team, these small achievements can noticeably improve our Riders lifestyle and for those around them too! Being part of the Herd, I know we are all proud to do our bit but, without people like Sally and her team we would fail……Perhaps, having read this, you too might feel you could make a difference, and you can! Why not come to see us and consider becoming a Volunteer – I’d be delighted to meet you and might even let you have a ride on me! Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473.824172

Hadleigh Town Forum presents The Hadleigh Easter Craft & Food Fair on the 17th March 2013 at the Town Hall complex in Hadleigh and is yet again bound to be fantastic. The Fair uses all the rooms in the Town Hall Complex which starts in the Grand Hall up stairs, which has access via lift or stairs. Then make your way to the other end of the Grand Hall and up the stairs, which takes you to the Old Town Hall, then though to council chamber then down stairs to the Guild Hall which is where you will find the Food Hall with jams, cheese and pies, breads, preserves, sweets and cakes and lots more. Daylight burglaries are occurring in the local area… Many people don’t pay as much attention to their home’s security during the daylight hours. This is because people tend to feel safer when not surrounded by darkness. However, when looking at statistics burglaries are just as likely to occur during the day. A burglary at a property can occur at anytime day or night, in fact many burglaries occur during the day, as offenders tend to blend in better with the surroundings and are able to offer more plausible excuses should they be challenged, such as “I am lost”, “I was looking for Mr X who lives somewhere around here”, “I thought this property was for sale” and “I’ve lost my dog”, along with various other excuses that can be more easily made during the normal daylight working hours. If your home is unoccupied during the day here are a few tips to help you to improve security: ALWAYS lock your doors and windows when you leave the house, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Make sure your locks reach British Standards and are fit for purpose. Never assume that your home, garage, shed or studio will be safe while unlocked, even if you’re currently at home. It only takes a minute for someone to enter and take what is not theirs. Remove ALL tools and objects from within your garden that could be used by an offender to break into your home with. ALWAYS set your intruder alarm if you have one, during the day AND night. And consider installing an alarm in any outbuildings too. Battery operated alarms can be purchased from Sudbury, Hadleigh and Capel Police Stations for £8 each. Use lights and, especially during the day, radios on timers inside your home. Property mark all electrical and valuable items with a UV & permanent marker pen, which can be purchased from the above stations for £1 each, or use a property marking solution like Smartwater or SelectaDNA. Register any items that have serial numbers on the UK property database www.immobilise.com for free, including any bicycles and power tools. Ensure your perimeters are secure with fencing or appropriate hedging and lock sidegates at all times with a padlock or mortice lock. IF YOU REMEMBER JUST ONE THING… Remember to store ALL important valuables including jewellery and cash out of sight and if possible in a hidden wall or floor safe. The first place an offender will look is in the top drawer of your dresser unit, or in the back of a wardrobe. DON’T MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM. Finally we are asking for residents to help to be our eyes and ears in the community. If you see something suspicious, or out of the ordinary then please report it and whenever possible report it straight away by calling 101. Please do not leave it to someone else, we would sooner have a number of calls on the same suspicious person, than none at all. Please remember that where you believe a crime is about to be or is in the progress or lives are threatened call 999.

'Guys and Dolls' at Hadleigh High School Every year a large group of our pupils audition to take part in the school production. After the success of productions over many years we have a strong team of committed staff (past and present) who support our pupils in showcasing their talents. This year's production of 'Guys and Dolls' was a hit with our audience on the 3 successive nights. Those of you who have attended previous productions such as ' We Will Rock You' last year, or ‘Bugsy Malone’ the year before, will be aware of the quality of our pupil productions which have earned us an enviable reputation in our local community. The performers and backstage support, involving pupils aged 11-16, have committed to a rigorous schedule of rehearsals after school and during weekends to hone the production in preparation for the performances since September. Pupils have also exemplified what effective teamwork can achieve. This type of activity is essential within any school as it offers pupils the chance to develop the skills which will enable them to be successful persistence, confidence and teamwork. In addition, all of them benefit from the experience of achieving a shared goal and the sense of accomplishment. We were delighted that pupils from our feeder primary schools supported us again this year by attending our dress rehearsal and providing the essential experience of performing in front of a large audience. This is always really helpful in enabling pupils to identify the tweaks which will further refine the production. A Taste of University On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th January, 4 students from Hadleigh High School went to University Campus Suffolk (UCS) to have a ‘taster’ of life at University. Victoria Tapp (Yr 9), William Hart, Esther Grey and Ellen Jay (Yr 8) were invited to attend on both days. On the Thursday, they were introduced to the University along with Yr 8+9 students from St. Albans and Thurston. They then did a number of ice breaker activities to get to know everyone. Afterwards they had a couple of University taster lessons to experience what the current students learn. Finally, after a quick spot of lunch, they did ceramic painting (painting mugs, plates etc) which they thoroughly enjoyed. On the Friday, activities had to be cut short due to the weather. Nevertheless they had an enjoyable day. Most of their parents came in for an insight into what the UCS had to offer. The day started with a couple of videos to show the students what courses they could take. This included an Arts and Humanities area with a film studio and art rooms. They then had a tour of the Waterfront (west) building up to level 4, as levels 5+6 were for staff only, before having a buffet lunch which included wraps, sandwiches, peppers and mouthwatering cakes. After that they had a talk from current students about their experiences at the University and about the help that disabled students and students with learning difficulties (dyslexia, autism etc) get. To finish off the couple of days, they got into small groups to create their own University. All four of the Hadleigh students were sad that the experience was over but would go back if they could. Victoria Tapp, 9T, said, “It was a fun experience which made me more confident about going to University. I’d recommend going there to anyone who wants to know more about University life. ‘Be Active's’ Newest Coach James Bark, aged 15 and student at Hadleigh High School, is ‘Be Active's’ newest recruit to Babergh's volunteer coach programme. James is a keen boxer and currently boxes with Needham Market Boxing Club. James will be mentored by Phill Francis, who is a level 3 personal trainer, kickboxer and Contender AM boxing coach – Phill hopes to involve James in coaching from the start and has worked with James before and knows he will make an able assistant. Stephanie Lloyd Babergh's ‘Be Active’ officer is keen to invest in James and make his volunteering worthwhile – “we will pay for James to become a boxing coach and ensure he has every opportunity to learn gradually and feel happy with his coaching and support him in his further development.“ Examination time! Over the past few weeks Year 11 students have been undertaking mock exams and both Years 10 and 11 have had actual GCSEs that will count towards their final grades. January saw the first of many GCSE exams taking place, including Science, English Literature, History, Food Technology, Health and Social Care, Business Studies and Textiles. Obviously exams can be a very stressful time for pupils, but to help minimize this, clear and easy revision can be a good way to stay 22

on top of work. We asked some pupils who had exams in January to give us some revision tips and ways to help stop stress, and here they are: • Attend any revision sessions that school offers. • Put any distracting items such as laptops or phones away from your workplace, this way you will maximise your concentration levels. • Print off old papers and practise them, as well as looking at previous mark schemes to see how to pick up marks. • Create a revision timetable- this will help you feel more in control of the whole process. • Give yourselves 5 minute breaks, eat well, drink a lot and go out for regular exercise; this will help your concentration levels and also minimize your stress. We wish Year 11 the best of luck with their future exams. Art Update Many exciting things have been happening in the Art department so far this year. Year 8 students have been taking part in a competition to design a crisp packet; the winner of which will be featured on the cover of a local magazine: a brilliant opportunity and an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Miss Manford’s and Ms Graham’s Year 10 GCSE Art classes are producing two painted canvases for St. Mary’s church, which will be displayed in the church as soon as possible. This is a fantastic opportunity for the GCSE pupils to have their work displayed and seen by the local community and will benefit all involved. As well as all this, the Year 11 GCSE students recently did an Art mock exam, the results of which were incredibly good. Berlin Trip A school trip for Year 10 German and History students has been organised by the Languages and Humanities department to Berlin in 2013. The trip will involve exploring the sights and sounds of Berlin, visiting museums and trying the local food. The trips is being organised by My Day and Mrs Holmes. The trip is aiming to help the students realise the benefits of learning a language as Berlin offers a rich and diverse cultural experience. With the Job market expanding across countries, a foreign language is becoming increasingly valuable, making this trip a great motivator to keep revising and studying hard! Rugby Match All age groups of the Hadleigh High School Rugby Team have had a good year, with wins and their fair share of losses. As a reward for their hard work and effort a trip has been organised to see England and Italy play in the Six Nations Rugby Tournament at the England Rugby stadium in Twickenham. The game will be a fantastic opportunity to experience high-level, international rugby played at the home of English Rugby; the game is sure to have an incredible atmosphere. Duke of Edinburgh update Year 10 students completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards are beginning to complete some of their sections that allow them to complete the award. The students have to complete the two three month sections and one six month section in Physical Recreation, Volunteering and Skills. The physical recreation section can include sports such as Wrestling, Morris Dancing and even American football! The students are also approaching their qualifying expeditions. Students must walk 15 miles over 2 days in almost any weather carrying everything they need for each day. The Duke of Edinburgh award is recognised by employers for its challenging tasks. The award tests: teamwork, communications, thinking skills and determination as well as physical strength. Year 9 Box Clever The year 9 students have been studying ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as part of their English course this term. They have been reading and performing parts of the play. The pupils have the chance to watch an exciting live performance of the play by Box Clever in March. Box Clever is a professional touring theatre company, offering lively interpretations of the plays to capture the interest of young people. Previous year 9 students watched the performance last year; they found it very interesting and enjoyed the modern production. Cross Country Two Hadleigh students represented Suffolk in the East Anglian Cross Country Championships held in Lincolnshire on Saturday 2nd February. Jasmine Hayward finished 30th and was the 5th Suffolk runner to complete the course; as a result she should be selected to represent the County at the All England Championships to be held near Buxton in Derbyshire in March. Alex Baxter was feeling unwell on the day but still managed to finish 50th in the Junior boys race. He is young enough to compete in the same age group next year. At the beginning of January, Alex won his age group while competing for Ipswich Harriers in the Suffolk AAA championships held at Bury. When customers visit the store they can choose a timed delivery slot from the magnetic board in store, before they pick up a trolley or basket and do their shopping as normal. Once they get to the checkout they simply hand over their time slot, and their shopping will be delivered later that day at their chosen time. Gary Spink, Hadleigh Co-op Supermarket Manager, said: “This is a great service and will save our local customers having to carry home heavy shopping bags. It also means that people can do their shopping in our store and then visit the rest of Hadleigh High Street, or head back to work, without worrying about leaving chilled or frozen food in the boot of their car.” Home delivery is free for orders over £25, or £3.49 for orders below £25. The store will deliver to homes in a five mile radius of the store covering all of Hadleigh, and local villages including Raydon, Layham, Kersey and Whatfield. Just ask in store for more information and a map of the delivery area.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club The February meeting of the club had an excellent turnout despite the rotten weather and it was a great pleasure to welcome potential new members thanks one and all for coming. Mr Rodney Tibbs talked to us about "My Gardening Year" reinforcing a really interesting talk with terrific pictures. Also he was only too happy to tell us about his failures as well as successes, one of which was an interesting way of combating those pesky slugs and snails. He stressed too how the drastically escalated price of seed had made the minimal effort of saving ones own seeds well worth that effort. Having recently sown tomato seeds of both newly bought and own saved seed, the resulting germination has been identical. As a member of Gardening Which, I also take their research as being reliable, and that has found that even seed from F1 Hybrids produced little or no difference in the ultimate produce. Our next meeting will be the A. G. M. meeting where we like to be able to chat with members to find out their main interests for future planning and have a few nibbles - look forward to seeing you. Bentwaters Cold War Museum The Bentwaters Cold War Museum will be opening its doors for 2013 on Easter Sunday 31st March and has become a popular attraction for visitors to the Suffolk coastal area and for those interested in aviation and military installations previously denied access to the public. The museum is based in the United States Air Force (USAF) hardened command post on the former Bentwaters airbase which closed after the withdrawal of the USAF in 1993 and is believed to be the only such building open to the public in the UK and Europe. Run by volunteers from the Bentwaters Aviation Society, the building is a large bunker made available to the public to view following 3 years of work to renovate and refurbish and opened in 2007. The museum has been officially ‘Accredited’ by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) as meeting the national standard for UK museums which is an impressive achievement for a new museum. The main “War Operations Room” and “Battle Cabin” have been restored to original condition including the original decontamination showers and airlocks allowing members of the public to see these once top secret, high security military installations in detail in an eerie atmosphere evoking the Cold War period. Other parts of the building have been turned into exhibition rooms, covering the history of RAF Bentwaters from W.W.II until the base closed in 1993. Included in this are histories of the units that operated from the airfield, particularly the 81st Fighter Wing. Also included is the other airfield which was part of the “twin base” complex - RAF Woodbridge, again covering the period from W.W.II until the present day. Of particular interest to families is a detailed timeline display of the Cold War which has proven of great help to those studying this period at school. Further exhibition rooms feature information on the “Special Operations/Rescue Squadrons” that were based at RAF Woodbridge, and also the “Aggressor” Squadron based at Bentwaters. There is plenty of car parking space and is suitable for all ages and has the added benefit of being an ideal all weather visitor attraction. Plans for 2013 will see airframes continue to undergo work to bring them up to museum standard and it is expected some will be completed by the end of the year. The new café and shop has proven to be a great success offering light refreshments and souvenirs. Following on from the success of previous years, the open dates for 2013 have now been finalised and the museum will continue to open on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month and Bank Holiday Sundays & Mondays, from April until October. Of special mention is the Special Open day in June when there will be stalls and displays including static aircraft & military vehicles invoking the atmosphere of USAF open days of the past. Further information on the society can be found at www.bentwaters-as.org.uk and for the museum at www.bcwm.org.uk

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I have not been well for the last few weeks, and am fed up with hiding indoors from the cold and wind when there is so much in the garden that ought to be done. Today as I start to write we have seen the first bit of sunshine for several weeks, and I am hoping that the improvement will be sustained so that I can tackle the most urgent of the overdue jobs. Already the bit of sunshine has brightened up the garden by bringing some early crocus flowers out. I have started sowing seeds on the windowsill, and in the greenhouse, and March is the peak month for sowing vegetable seed, so this activity will continue. I used to raise lots of flowering bedding plants from seed, but my garden is quite well established now, and there is not much space left to be filled with annuals and half hardy perennials. I will raise some miniature antirhiniums, some lobelia to fill in my display, some tagetes to brighten the edge of a border, and some sweet peas for my wife to pick. The sweet peas will be grown up a double row of bamboos, with the variety Royal Family mixed on one side, and a mixture of the old fashioned varieties on the other. The flowers of the old varieties may not be so spectacular, but their perfume is stunning. Weather Records In January at Kersey there were 42.2 mm (1.7") of rain. This included the snow that we woke up with on January 21st. It demonstrates that it takes a lot of snow to equal an inch of rain. The 3 month figure was 198 mm (7.8") which is still a bit more than the average rainfall. In January the maximum temperature was 10 Cel (50F) which is typical. The minimum was -9 Cel (16F), which is cool for January. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 3 Cel (37F) , which is about normal for mid February. Open Gardens Sun 31st March: Tudor Roost, 18 Frere Way, Fingringhoe, Colchester CO5 8BP and Woodwards, Blacksmiths Lane, Coddenham, Ipswich IP6 9TX Hints March is the month when one really must make some time for the garden because :(a) Winter pruning of hedges, roses and fruit trees needs to be completed. Do not prune plum trees at this time because it can cause the silver leaf fungus disease. (b) It is the right time to sow a lot of flower and vegetable seeds. Even if you do not want the work of sowing seeds in pots and pricking out one can get a good show of colour by sowing hardy annuals direct where you want the plants about the third week of March. Suitable types are Annual Chrysanthemum, Calendula, Clarkia, Eschscholzia, Godetia, Larkspur, and Linaria. Most vegetables can be sown, but check the packets. (c) The weeds will be growing well, and should not be allowed to seed. (d) The lawn will be growing again. Ideally give it a first light cut when it is about 3 inches long. It is also a good time to give it a feed. (e) Garden paths may well need a good clean to make them less slippery. John Rye

Even one of Suffolk’s top tourist destinations has to work hard to keep attracting visitors. Although the general level of tourism is growing in Suffolk, local businesses on many rural high streets are struggling, and villages including Lavenham have to keep finding better ways of reminding regular visitors, as well as new ones, of the delights of this unique destination. Last year, The Lavenham Merchants’ Guild, which represents over 60 local businesses, commissioned creative design agency Shorthose Russell from Norwich to develop a new brand for Lavenham. On Tuesday evening (12th February) the new identity for Lavenham will be launched in the famous Guildhall on the Market Place . The brand Love Lavenham, a day, a week, forever has been developed to bring a new and fresh image to potential visitors to Lavenham: `We want the brand to convey a village that is romantic, thriving and welcoming; that is still a bit of a hidden gem www.lovelavenham.co.uk and is within touching distance of many other beautiful places’ said Alex Paul from the Lavenham Merchants Guild. ‘This village has so much to offer in terms of eating, shopping and of course history and heritage. It is of real appeal not only to local residents and day visitors but to those who want to stay a bit longer as well’. The new brand is being used across a series of campaigns that the Lavenham Merchants’ Guild has invested in, including a new website (www.lovelavenham.co.uk). The Merchants’ Guild has also been working with Visit Suffolk on its `Curious County’ campaign as well as with Visit East Anglia’s Greater Anglia campaign `Explore and Experience’. Later this month the new brand will feature in a series of adverts in the Suffolk Magazine to coincide with the printing of a new local guide. Alex Paul states; `You can’t reach audiences with an identity alone. We really want this new brand to attract more visitors to Lavenham and so support our local businesses. We want people to enjoy eating at our superb local restaurants, pubs and cafes, shop on our high street and stay as long as they like in our hotels, holiday cottages and B&Bs. If we get the branding and campaign right and target audiences effectively, we will drive more people to our new website www.lovelavenham.co.uk and in turn bring more people to our village. Once they are here we know they will have a great time and will come back again and again’. For more information on Lavenham Merchants Guild visit www.lovelavenham.co.uk or send an email to lovelavenham@live.co.uk or call Sarah Rands on 07788 508520 or Alex Paul on 07503 332675

Charity lottery reassures supporters over price of playing With National Lottery tickets set to double in price this year, one local charity is reminding people that their lottery is still just £1 per play AND there’s more chance of winning the top prize too! The lottery run by the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) will remain at £1 per play per week and the top prize of £1,000 is won by an active player each and every time. There are also 17 other prizes each week ranging from £50 to £250 and a further accumulator prize which could see someone winning £25,000, and it could be you! There’s an added bonus in that you don’t need to check your numbers each week; prizes are automatically sent to winners following the draw. Rachel Buxton, Lottery Manager at EAAA, said: “Many of our supporters play the lottery as a way of regularly donating to the charity and there is of course the incentive that they may win something in return. Many people have been playing our lottery since it began in 2002, it has always been £1 each time and we have no intention of increasing the amount it costs to play the game and support the work we do. “Money raised through the lottery represents a large percentage of the donations we receive to keep the charity running. Without the supporters who play each week, we wouldn’t be able to fund the helicopters which transport our highly skilled doctor and paramedic crews to the scenes of emergencies across the region, helping local people whenever and wherever they need us.” To join the lottery online visit www.eaaa.org.uk or call the lottery office on 01603 489400 to be sent an application form
Fidelis Activity News LPA & Just Desserts: Discussing the merits of Donors, Attorneys, Deputies, Coca Cola Cake and Lemon Posset is a strange remit for one evening. Nevertheless, the ladies of Fidelis managed to do just that at their last gathering. The legal sounding Dessert Tasters Elizabeth Mirams, jargon and procedures Maureen Adams, Liz Dendy and Miki Davies were clarified and simplified by visiting experts from Gotelee solicitors, Emma Woollard. Emma talked members through all that is involved in a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and her colleague, Tanya Thomas, outlined the convoluted and expensive repercussion if you don’t get round to making this important document. It was a helpful, informative look at the provisions which can be made to protect us in our dotage. Moving on from the serious side of the meeting the ladies then got their ‘Just Desserts’. This was a small tray containing six mouthwatering puddings lovingly created by the Committee. As there is no such thing as a free lunch, members were asked to put the exotic sounding desserts in their own order of priority. Taste buds were activated and challenged by Coca Cola Cake, Eaton Mess, Fruit Delight, Happy Ending, Lemon Cheesecake and Lemon Posset. As ever, the ladies rose to the occasion and made their choices clear on the form provided. The focus on desserts is the forerunner of the group’s next project due to reach fruition in the autumn. On Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/hadleighhares On Twitter www.twitter.com/hadleighhares84 Online www.hadleighhares.co.uk Sun 10th February 2013: Great Bentley Half Marathon On a bitterly cold, wet windy February morning five Hares lined up with 600 other runners to run the Great Bentley Half Marathon. Run by many as training for a spring marathon, Great Bentley offers a fast flat loop around the quiet but exposed Essex countryside where if the wind blows you certainly know about it. John Scaife, currently training for the Brighton Marathon bought the Hares home in a superb time of 1.18.54, followed by Tim Ryder in 1.38.27. Simon Fenn, recently returned from a long term injury posted 1.47.37. Corinna Hussey, currently training for the London Marathon had her very own "domestique" in Kate Thomas whose brilliant support from start to finish pushed Corinna to a PB of 1.51.08 with Kate coming in alongside. Andrew Stewart finished in 2.01.36. Sun 20th January 2013: Benfleet 15 On a cold wintry Sunday morning three Hadleigh Hares tackled the Benfleet 15 mile race, expecting it to have been cancelled because of the severe conditions. It was 15 miles of road and off road running over all terrains across loads of snow and some juicy hills to add to the excitement. The results are as follows with 373 runners completing the course: 109th place Brian Airlie in a time of 2.03.07 148th place Steve Hunt in a time of 2.10.34 149th place Dave Dulake in a time of 2.10.35 Well done to all runners in such extreme conditions

Our new resurfaced Green has had it’s first fertilizer dressing and is already starting to “green up”,thanks to the work of our Green team of volunteers. On Friday the 1st March and Saturday the 2nd March we are hosting the H.A.D.S. murder mystery production of “Wide of the Jack”, which is very much a first for the Club. On Saturday 23rd March the “Gentlemen” of the Club will put their baking skills to the test with our new traditional early spring Coffee Morning. Which apart from giving us men the chance to don our flowery aprons, the object is to get all the membership together to have a pre-season chat. It is also an opportunity to welcome potential new members. So if you would like to come along to the Club in Stone Street from 10.30am to 12.00 noon we would be happy to show you our facitities and give you an idea of what the club has to offer both from the playing and the social scene. Also on the evening of the 23rd March we are having our rearranged “Music Night” which was postponed in January due to the snow. Once again this is a new venture for the Club and we are expecting a very enjoyable evening of live entertainment. Members are reminded that David Miller would like an idea of the numbers attending so please put your name on the list in the Clubroom.

Hadleigh Rugby Club Division 1 status a priority! Having gained promotion as Eastern Counties Div. 2 Champions last season, Hadleigh Rugby Club have found the step up a tough challenge, and club Chairman, Alan Murray, sees Division 1 survival as a priority. Following a strong start to the season with 5 straight victories, the absence and injuries to several key players since December has placed increased pressure on the squads in sustaining the run of victories. Club Coach, Adam Miles is determined to turn around the situation and with the gradual return of these players, the target is to link together a series of wins and remain in Eastern Counties Division 1 for another season. The 2nd XV have competed well in their inaugural season in the Suffolk Merit table and lie just below half way in the league, hoping that the second half of the season will also see a return of missing players.. Meanwhile, the junior section of the club, including the Youth teams, is having another good season with the U-14s team winning the Suffolk Plate in December but unfortunately losing out to favourites, Woodbridge in the semi – final of the main cup competition. The U-15s team also were unlucky not to reach the plate final having lost narrowly in the semi-final draw. Hadleigh are now looking forward to the run in to the end of the season determined to return to form. The club is always open to anyone to come along and join. Players from the age of 7 through to senior levels are always welcomed. Juniors meet on Sunday mornings while training for the Youth teams takes place at Layham Road on Tuesday evenings from 7.00pm Senior training is on Thursday nights from 7.00pm and the coaches are always looking for any player who wishes to take part. Enquiries regarding playing can also be made to Club Chairman Alan Murray on 01473 652448 or just turn up at training. Spectators to our senior games are also welcome in the clubhouse.
Newton Seniors Support Arthritis Care The seniors' section of Newton Green Golf Club handed over a cheque for charity in the sum of £750 at its annual meeting. Present to receive the money from retiring captain Mick Barlow were Sudbury branch Arthritis Care secretary Muriel Shapley and treasurer Pam Hullet. The meeting heard the seniors section had continued to grow, with about half the members registered for the Muriel Shapley, Pam Hullet weekly Brian Eady Seniors & Mick Barlow Stableford series. As a token of thanks, long-term organiser of the competition, Albert Walls, was presented with an inscribed glass tankard in view of his likely forthcoming departure from the area.
