Work to start on new £2.4m Hadleigh Facility! Work on a brand-new multi-million pound community facility for the residents of Hadleigh and surrounding villages is finally due to start. Babergh District Council is delighted to announce that groundwork preparations on the Hadleigh Community Facility are due to begin on land off Stonehouse Road, in the town, later this month. Hadleigh residents have been waiting for two years for the £2.4m two-storey unit comprising a dance studio, gym and a community room to be built on land near the town’s swimming pool. It is hoped that the new facility will be open to the public by late summer of 2012. In 2009, Babergh had to delay building work in order to comply with, what was then, a comparatively new piece of legislation. A provision in the Commons Act (2006) meant that the Council had to delay any building work to allow a two-year period to elapse during which applications could be considered as to whether some of the land needed for the facility could be classed as a ‘ town green’. This deadline has now passed. Members of Babergh’s Strategy Committee gave the go ahead in January for money for the scheme to be released - even though nothing would happen on site for a number of months – to ensure minimal delays once
the project could finally go ahead. In February, South Suffolk Leisure Trust - which already runs Hadleigh’s swimming pool on Babergh’s behalf - was awarded management of the new facility when it is built. Cllr. Nick Ridley, who as the previous Chairman of the Strategy Committee played a pivotal role over many years in the process to bring the Hadleigh Community Facility to fruition said: “It’s been a long and sometimes frustratingly slow journey that we have all been on to get to this point, but that makes this moment all the more worthwhile.

The media continues to be confused about the future of property values and sales volumes. However, these things always come in waves, and it will probably not be long before we look back at this time and wonder what all the fuss was about. From a buyer’s perspective the question is whether this is a good time to buy because prices have fallen, or a bad time to buy on the basis that they might fall further. Opening Hours Firstly, we should look at things in Mon - Fri 8am - 8pm Sat - Sun 10am - 5pm perspective and understand that there is a difference between a regular buyer and a professional property investor. Certainly investors are currently doing well as they are taking advantage of reduced asking prices. But from a “normal” buyer’s perspective, in some ways it wouldn’t matter if prices were to fall further after having bought, because presumably, you won’t be selling in the near future. The value of a property is only relevant when it is on the market, just as the tourist exchange rate for the Euro is only really relevant when you cross The Channel. There is

Matt Barber & Dale Willings during the Fidelis’ tour of Hadleigh Fire Station Having watched the Hadleigh Fire Station being built and listening to a disturbing fire prevention talk just recently, it was time to link the two and look into our new, local firefighting facility. A visit was arranged and Fidelis members enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the premises in the company of Watch Manager, Matt Barber and Crew Manager, Dale Willings. Fortunately there wasn’t an emergency call out that evening so everything remained in situ throughout the visit. Hadleigh’s new facility is part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to build or update many of Suffolk’s fire stations. The smart, compact building belies the number of functional rooms within. With fireman on call, an extensive ‘waiting’ area or a slippery pole is a thing of the past. Instead there is a state of the art computer roster programme to ensure that sufficient, appropriate firemen are always available. Safety is paramount for both staff and the public. This is reflected in their training, work gear and equipment which is made of the most up to date materials. The familiar tower at the rear of the premises is an important high rise practice area which the group were quite content to view from below! Our thanks to Matt and Dale for making the visit possible and for giving the group a clear and interesting insight into their work. We also much appreciated the opportunity to see inside one of Hadleigh’s important front-line services. Jan Devey

Hadleigh Folk and Acoustic Music Nights We would like to thank the lovely audience for their contribution to our very successful night in October with The Candle Thieves. We are continuing the series on Friday 4th November with a performance by Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer. This locally-based duo is well known on the folk scene nationally and internationally; they recently completed a tour of Australia. They perform a mixture of songs and tunes accompanied by guitar, flute, smallpipes and nykelharpa, a traditional Swedish instrument. (www.myspace.com/smallpiper) On this occasion the support artist is singer/guitarist Phil Lyons. Friday 2nd December is the next date for your diary when we will be hosting Mary Humphreys and Anahata, a duo of singers with squeezeboxes, cello and banjo. Mary is also a song researcher and sings some of her discoveries from her native Lincolnshire.

This year at Bildeston Primary School the Harvest Festival was all about the five elements. Bee class told us about wood and read a poem, Owl class sang a song about the earth, and Eagle class wrote and performed their poems about fire. Hare class linked their work on Egypt with making a shaduf to fit the element water. Shark class was so impressed by the poem that Travis Prince wrote that each child read a line from "Uncatchable Air". The band did a great job as they are mainly a new group. The whole event was performed in front of a large audience of delighted parents and families. At the end of the Harvest Assembly there was a collection for Ngonda School in Kenya, our charity for this term. So far we have raised £43.73. This term the topic in KS2 is the Ancient Egyptians. Everyone is enjoying this so far. In Shark class we've been making time lines, bookmarks and writing instructions on how to make a mummy! KS1 are learning about India and the differences and similarities between our countries. They have also been having some lessons in Indian cookery so delicious smells have been wafting around the school. Year 6 have entered a competition called ‘Travel back in Time’ and are

Local Author to Sign Books at Christmas Fair Hot on the heels of his appearances on Radio 2’s Steve Wright show and Radio 4’s “Loose Ends”, Boxford author Mark Mason will be signing copies of his new book “Walk the Lines” at the forthcoming Edwardstone Christmas Fair. Mark set himself the task of covering London’s underground system by tracking the route above ground, taking a total of six months and 403 miles to complete the task. The book is a treasure trove of captured conversations, architectural insights and good old London trivia that make it truly unique and fascinating. The Edwardstone Christmas Fair takes place on Thursday November 10th in the evening and on Friday November 11th in Edwardstone Church and the Village Hall. Mark will be there on both days signing copies of his books, which will make a fantastic present for your friends and families. The Fair has a fantastic range of stalls this year, stocking everything from luxury leather handbags and jewellery, through to children’s toys and original household items. We have a bigger variety of foodstalls than ever, including Emmett’s of Peasenhall and Greengates Smokehouse. There will also be the opportunity to purchase the famous Edwardstone Christmas pudding, hand-made by the husbands of the committee. Christmas puddings can be pre-ordered by contacting Sally Hoskyns on 01787 211266. We would also be delighted to receive any donations for the produce stall. Please call Liz Henderson on 01787 211417 if you would like to contribute any cakes or preserves.

Howard with Mitch and Shaun at The Brewers Arms Dear Readers, do gather round and form a huddle. I have been feeling a little nostalgic. It was only a year ago that I was looking forward to the celebrations for my Fiftieth Birthday. Here we are almost at my Fifty first Birthday. In a year, I have lost my father and now my mother has her leg in plaster as she has ruptured her Achilles tendon. Whilst my mother was in hospital for five days, she is now at home but finds it very difficult to move anywhere and is having to spend her time in her bedroom. My cook Maria cannot cope with two households and so I am heading-up catering and such like for my mother. Let us hope that in a couple of months. I am so grateful to my mother’s friends who have kindly made some rather nice soups, casseroles, crumbles and such like. During the time that my father was ill, my mother and I found it very convenient to catch the odd meal at The Brewers Arms. The public house and restaurant is located on the A1071 just beyond the turnings to Polstead and its proprietors are Mitch and Shaun. The picture shows me with Mitch and Shaun outside their establishment. I have enjoyed dinner at The Brewers Arms on various occasions recently. I would recommend that you should try fish and chips on a Friday evening. One has an absolutely enormous piece of cod which is beautifully cooked in a beer batter – all for £5.99 (on a Friday). Should you have visitors and your home is not as commodious as you would wish then clean and comfortable bed and breakfast is available at The Brewers Arms (Tel. 01787 210441).

Ride On, Burstall The second Saturday in September is traditionally the time for the sponsored bike ride, in aid of local churches and the Historic Churches Trust, so I was happy to participate on behalf of St. Mary's, Burstall, and give my mountain bike an airing. Weather-wise, it was pretty well perfect - warm and dry, but not too hot or windy - when I set off at 9.00 in the morning. During the course of my journey (approx 37 miles), I visited 40 churches of various denominations, some of which I'd been to before but also discovering numerous new ones well, new to me, anyway! I discovered a couple of other things also; firstly the absolute fallacy of the belief held (outside East Anglia, I should add!) that this area is totally flat, and secondly that, even in these difficult times, people can still dig deep for worthy causes, and it's such generosity that enabled me to raise the magnificent sum of £750 on the day. Half of this goes to the Churches Trust and the other half to St Marys, so it's a big, big THANK YOU from me to everyone, both inside and outside the village, who sponsored me, and made an already enjoyable day - despite the saddle-soreness! - even more worthwhile. I look forward to trying again next year. Keith Raby
Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Alison Butler CHRISTMAS CONCERT: Sunday December 11that 6.30 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church The programme for this annual popular concert is still being finalised but will include: theatre music by Purcell, a selection from Sullivan’s ‘The Gondoliers’ and ‘The Hunt’ from Vivaldi’s four seasons. As usual there will be Carols for everybody to sing accompanied by the Orchestra. We are grateful to the Catholic Church for agreeing to host this concert. As usual entrance is free, but we do ask you to make a donation as you leave. As well as helping to defray the costs of the concert it enables us to make a substantial donation to the Church. In view of the building work being carried out in their hall, this will be especially welcome this year. Please make a note of the date now, and we look forward to seeing you again on Dec. 11th. Over-Counter Payments phased out Babergh no longer provides an over-the-counter service for payments as part of plans to introduce customers to more convenient and low-cost alternative methods. The plans to phase out over the counter payments for rent, council tax and other services started earlier this summer with opening hours reduced. The phased reduction in opening hours gave people who used the Hadleigh cash office time to get used to the change and find alternative and convenient ways to make payments. In order that this process was as painless as possible for residents who will be affected, staff have been on hand to help them find a suitable alternative for payment and advice leaflets were available too. Barry Hunter, Babergh’s Director of Finance, said: “While we know there are still a number of people who prefer to pay over-the-counter, the majority of residents throughout the district use direct debit, which is the simplest and most convenient way to pay, or have chosen to use one of the many other ways of paying bills. The number of people who use the service in Hadleigh is comparatively small compared to the cost to run the service. A number of other councils have closed their counter facilities and we have been able to learn from their experiences. For customers that still want to pay their Rents or Council Tax in cash, Babergh has

Festive Present Ideas at Hospice Christmas Fair An array of festive goods and food will be delighting shoppers at the annual fundraising Christmas Fayre in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. It takes place on Thursday, November 24th between 9.30am and 3.30pm at the Stoke by Nayland Golf Club at Leavenheath near Colchester. There will be more than 50 stalls selling a range of gifts from quality children’s toys, homewares, jewellery, clothing, books and local produce. Known locally as the Hospice Fayre and a festive fixture for many years, a percentage of proceeds go to St Elizabeth Hospice, an independent charity which provides services throughout East Suffolk and costs £6.6 million a year to run. Entry is £4 on the door. Refreshments and lunch will be available. Everyone is welcome and there is plenty of free parking. Nicola Owen, community fundraiser at the Hospice, said: “This is a fabulous event which attracts hundreds of festive shoppers from Suffolk and Essex. It is organised by a committee of dedicated volunteers who give up their time for free and last year’s fayre raised more than £16,000 for St Elizabeth Hospice – which is a fantastic achievement. We expect this year’s event to be just as successful.” For more information call the Hospice fundraising team on 01473 723600, email fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk or visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk

Christmas Considerations for the Hard of Hearing As the festive season approaches we all look forward to sharing quality time celebrating the Christmas festivities. BUT for someone with a hearing loss this can be the most difficult type of listening environment to cope with. The constant chitter chatter, the excessive background noise, music and loud voices, all make hearing clear speech very challenging. A normal hearing person doesn’t have to consider these issues, as the brain has more ability to discriminate and pick out the required speech naturally. At times it’s easier for a hearing impaired person to decline an invitation to a social event as they know just how difficult and isolating such an occasion can be. If you are aware that a family member or a friend is experiencing difficulty with hearing clearly, help them to be included in the celebrations by ensuring you look at them whilst in conversation. Raise your voice only slightly but project it more clearly, excess volume does not make speech clearer it only distorts the signal. Guide the group to talk one at a time rather than all at once; provide good lighting, seat the hard of hearing person with the background noise behind them or better still remove all unnecessary background noise if you can. Hearing problems can lead to isolation, lack of confidence, strain on relationships and lots more; may I ask if you notice a member of your family or a friend struggling with their hearing please encourage them to have their hearing tested? The average hearing-impaired adult waits over 5 years beyond first the first signs before seeking help!! The longer a hearing loss is left; the chances are it will decline further. As a routine everybody over the age of 65 should have their hearing tested at least every two years by a qualified professional, just as we do with our eyesight. With today’s digital technology, it is no longer necessary to struggle with hearing problems; the latest micro automatic digital hearing aids are making vast differences to lives especially in social environments. St John Ambulance It is now six months since the Hadleigh unit of St John Ambulance was reopened and things have progressed well. We have just had another five members completing their induction process and are well on their way to becoming full members of the organisation. We are looking for new adult volunteers to join us and learn to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. Every year, up to 150,000 people die in situations where first aid could have given them the chance to live. No one should die because they needed first aid and didn't get it. Fund-raising is going well to allow us to update the building but we are always looking for monetary and man hour donations. If you are interested in joining St John Ambulance or need First Aid cover at an event, please feel free to contact Alex Rose on 07707 701548 or e-mail Hadleigh@suffolk.sja.org.uk

Creation - A Celebration - Wow !! One of many words used to describe the amazing event that took place in St. Mary’s, Hadleigh throughout September. Here were 42 panels of embroidery, calligraphy, water colour and appliqué of the highest order in a kaleidoscope of colour in Sue Symons’ Celebration of creation. 2000 adults and children visited the exhibition and their comments in the Visitor’s Book cover the whole range of superlatives. The visitors came not only from Hadleigh and all over Suffolk, but from many parts of the country and overseas. Some simply arrived to see Hadleigh and found Sue Symons’ spectacular work. A lady from Sydney and another from Ontario wanted to know if the work could travel, while there were several enquiries as to how the exhibit came to be in Hadleigh and how they could bring it to their Church or District. We had many interesting conversations with those who came ; ranging from theological discussions on the Genesis story, through embroidery techniques to the wonderfully flexible use of a parish church that could be youth club, exhibition centre, concert hall and worship centre. Our thanks to The Bible Society, who made it possible – To all who gave time to steward the event, 3 shifts a day for a month is some undertaking. To the members of the Ansell Centre Tuesday craft group, the St. Mary’s ministry team and several individuals who loaned some exquisite and varied works. Lastly, but probably above all to those who came and then told others. Many arrived in St. Mary’s and told the stewards, “ I’ve been told not to miss this” – They were right ! Wendy and David Atkins

News from The Station Hello readers, and welcome to this month’s edition of news from the Police Station. It seems impossible as I write this article to think that we are now counting down the few weeks left until Christmas, and nervously looking out of our windows each morning to see whether snow and ice are going to make our journeys into work as difficult as possible. It serves as a timely reminder for us to make sure our cars and bikes are ready for the winter challenge. Most garages offer a winter service check, but with money short and times hard it is something many of us will over look. To save the expense, there are many things you can do at home. Check the oil regularly and make sure it is topped up, or changed if it hasn’t been done for a while. Check your tyre pressures and tread depth. Decent tyres can be lifesavers, and bad ones could cost you your licence. Take the time to make sure your lights work, and that they are clean, and your windscreen wipers work properly. I would always advise you to carry a warm blanket or coat along with spare light bulbs, a luminous vest and flask of hot drink just in case you should break down, or get caught in a jam for a long period of time. More winter motoring tips can be found at www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/.../winter_motoring.html. It is also the time of year when statistically more people are tempted to drive their vehicles whilst under the influence of alcohol. As I write this, we have already dealt with three collisions in the last two weeks where the drivers were drink driving. I urge you all to be vigilant when out socialising and challenge anyone whom you believe will drive whilst under the influence. Many employers take a dim view on drink drive convictions. You will lose your licence, you will get heavily fined, and you may lose your job. You could also face a prison sentence. Drink driving will kill. Please do not see yourself as a “grass” for telling us. Your call could save a life. As Bonfire night comes and goes, I remind you that there are many offences connected to fireworks, and we will positively deal with anyone who chooses to ignore the guidance. It is against the law to throw fireworks, to let them off in public places, and to set them off between 11pm and 7am. It is also against the law to store your fireworks for more than two weeks. We have the power to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying fireworks. Please be careful, the consequences of misusing fireworks can be irreversible – never go back to a firework once it has been lit! As always, we are here to help you, and will engage with all sections of the community. If you would like to talk to us about any community issues, please contact us on babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk , on the details below, or personally at the Police Station (but please remember our opening times are 1pm – 3pm Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays). Recent stories in the press and on TV warn about a hidden killer in bird feeders and on bird tables. How serious is it and can we do anything to protect our garden birds? What is killing two of our favourite garden birds? The greenfinch, that wonderful bright green visitor to our gardens and the chaffinch, one of our most colourful birds, are both being killed by a disease that jumped the species barrier from pigeons to finches in 2005. With the tricky to pronounce name of Trichomonosis, this nasty disease has reduced the UK’s population of greenfinches by 35% and chaffinches by 21%. The worry is that while finches seem to be most affected, other birds such as sparrows, goldfinch, siskin and dunnock may be at risk. Trichomonosis is caused by a single-celled parasite with tentacle-like appendages that it uses to hold onto the wall of a bird’s throat or gullet. Birds that are infected are easily identified as they appear generally lethargic, have fluffed up plumage, they drool saliva and have difficulty swallowing. Sadly they can suffer over a number of days and even weeks before dying as damage to the throat makes it increasingly difficult for them to swallow or breathe. Death usually comes from starvation or choking. To make things worse, the disease is easily spread to other birds, not only in the breeding season when parent birds are feeding young with regurgitated food, but also by contamination of bird feeders and bird tables with saliva or droppings. Unfortunately, like many bird diseases, this one seems to travel easily from one area to another. It was first noticed in western England and Wales where there was a major outbreak in the autumn of 2006. After that it spread to eastern England in 2007 and has now spread through bird migration to the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland, first appearing there in 2008. While it is very bad news for our garden birds, fortunately there is no risk to humans or animals such as cats or dogs. There is a risk to captive poultry or pet birds but these can be treated with suitable medicines from your vet. However, garden birds often carry Salmonella, Campylobacter and E.coli bacteria that can seriously affect us and our pets. So to avoid any infection from bird tables and feeders, the ‘Garden Bird Health initiative‘ makes a number of recommendations that will protect both us and our pets, and the birds that visit our feeding stations. The first thing to do is keep feeding stations clean by regular cleaning with a weak solution of domestic bleach or a special bird feeder cleaning solution available from good pet shops or online from Amazon. A feeder cleaning brush is also essential to do the job properly. Afterwards, rinse the feeders thoroughly and allow them to fully dry before refilling with seed. Brushes and equipment for cleaning should not be stored in the house and should not be used for any other purpose. It is also a good idea to wear rubber gloves while cleaning feeders and afterwards wash your hands and forearms thoroughly with soap and water. Finally ensure that your birds are given a regular supply of clean water and fresh bird food from an approved source. If you find dead or sick birds in your garden do not handle them directly. If you think you have a problem with Trichomonosis, there are two courses of recommended action. One is to leave bird baths empty and dry for a while and perhaps reduce the amount of food you are putting out so that not so many birds congregate. You can also move bird feeders around to different places in your garden to stop infection below the feeders where seed, saliva or droppings build up. In serious cases it is best to stop feeding for up to two months so that the birds disperse and new visitors to the garden can’t be infected. Gradually start feeding again but keep an eye open for evidence of the infection returning. You can help to monitor the disease by reporting dead garden birds or signs of the disease to the Garden Bird Health initiative on 020 7449 6685. This is the first in a series of articles for readers who have an appetite for news about science and latest research (the ‘ologies). Hadleigh & District Twinning Association On a lovely sunny Sunday in July and again in August we had two garden parties for members. Food was great, weather was great and the company was unrivalled. Sorry if you missed it but summer is always a difficult time to get everyone together, hopefully you will all be able to come to the Autumn happenings. Our Call your Wine Bluff had our taste buds tested and our olfactories detected the aromatics of six different wines, whilst our "experts" bluffed their way through the night with descriptive lies - or was it true? In preparation for the biennial hosting of the residents of Rousies and villages the committee of HDTA is busy with organising fund raising events. On Saturday 26th November we are reviving our popular themed meals starting with a Mexican chilli. Open to non-members, tickets are £9 each from Kath at The Framestore, 3 High Street, Hadleigh (not Mondays) or tell Jane to reserve your place (828392).
Holon expands its services We are pleased to announce an expansion of our services at Holon. In addition to regular Pilates classes we now offer Pilates for Pregnancy. Pilates is invaluable both pre and post partum as is gentle ‘cranio-sacral’ treatment for mother and baby. We have more than ten years experience in this field and find it to be some of the most enjoyable and rewarding work we undertake. We continue to offer clinical appointments on a voluntary donation basis. We believe that appropriate, quality healthcare should be universally availble. The modern world has forgotten that money is a human invention and merely a symbol of an exchange. Real value is to be found in good health. Money should not be mistaken for value, nor should its lack be an impedement to the pursuit of health. As John Ruskin said “There is no wealth but life”.

Jerry’s Diary On 19th September 400+ Swallows and 140+ Housemartins were feeding around Park Farm at the top of Holbecks Lane just before dusk. These being the largest flocks seen this Autumn. A Hobby came dashing over making the Hirundines fly off. A Ring Tailed Harrier was seen hunting over a beet field near Ash Street. A pair of Tawny Owls was seen perched on posts beside the Joseph’s church Angel Street, David Gant saw these owls from his house at 4.30am. On a more concerning note, I haven’t seen a Barn Owl for 3 months, although many people do see them often in the area. Little Egret have also become less frequently seen on my walks. Dobby King saw a Red Kite being mobbed by Corvids over his house near Frog Hall Lane. Another Short Eared Owl was seen in Semer, it was hunting over stubble near Hollow Trees Farm at the end of September. This particular species of Owl have become less common these days and inland sightings are rare. Flatford and Catterwade marshes used to have Short eared Owls during the winter for many years, but the over grazing by sheep and cattle on the marshes keeps the vegetation to short for the Owls many prey, the Short-tailed Vole. I don’t know if they have ventured back now that the RSPB look after Catterwade marshes. This Owl is much more diurnal than other Owls, and sometimes hunts in groups. October 1st, foggy start then a very warm 32 degrees , 93+ Swallows flew over Aldham Common and Wolves Lane. The first Redwings were seen on 8th October between Red Hill and Wolves Lane. I saw several groups flying low past me. The largest was about 200+ over Wolves Farm. Then groups of 53, 40, 14, 30 9 and 15. These Redwings were flying into a chilly, gusty NW wind. 32 Pied Wagtails were feeding at the top of Lady Lane on 9th October. The Sandhill Crane flying high over my garden, I wish, because I had planned to go and see the bird on Monday 10th October but discovered that it had been seen flying out high over the North Sea early Friday morning and not seen again. If I had been at home on the Thursday before it left I would have seen this crane species along with my friend Adam, who called me but I was out. Adam got to see it fairly close. Myself and Adam are not twitchers as such, not chasing every rare bird found in the UK, or even Suffolk. The last time I travelled to see a rare bird was 18 months ago at Westledon Heath, Suffolk to see the Lesser Kestrel and the Pallid Swift at Kessingland, both new species for me, the Kestrel being a first for Suffolk. Jerry Oxford If you see an interesting bird please let me know! I can be contacted by email: jerry@keithavis.co.uk

What a change in the weather! From needing their hairy coats cut, to wearing their winter coats, the Herd have certainly noticed the change; I’m thinking how good it is to be in my nice warm room. However, that does remind me that we did have a lovely day for the Cross Country Ride in September with as many as 64 riders turning out to support The Centre; close to the record I think! It certainly helped swell the coffers in that a final total of £2,034.10 was raised for which we thank everyone that contributed whether by donating money or their time by turning out to help. As usual, I had my ear to the ground for news and was listening to Lyn (Our Stable Manager) talking on the subject of the stable yard and how much effort is needed to keep it in pristine condition for when our Riders and their family and carers come along. It got me to thinking – some might say is that possible for a mechanical horse – but, seriously, keeping the yard and surrounding area clean and tidy is important for everyone so a word out there to anyone who might be looking for something different to do for maybe an hour to two any weekday morning; why not come along and help Lyn out? It’s a great location with nice people (And nice horses and ponies too); even the tea and coffee is free: well, think about it! We already have David cleaning the fields Monday, Colin on Thursday and John, complete with electric bike, who comes to attack the Ragwort during a morning or two each week. Oh! And think of the beneficial healthy exercise; better than a gym! I mentioned last month of the great time had by the 2nd Langham Scouting Group who visited us to look around and meet the pony they had sponsored but, in my excitement, I forgot to mention who they had decided to sponsor. Yes! It was none other than Rocky and I can tell you he is very pleased and proud to have been picked by them above the other members of the Herd. Whilst they were busy presenting their cheque to The Centre, I have managed to sneak a photo for you all to see of Rocky with his new friends; good isn’t it? Before I go, something important: the Herd have asked me to remind you that whilst they hope you enjoy your Guy Fawkes celebrations, please……do think of the welfare of your animal friends……they may not like the noise as much as you. Taj’s Tips – Don’t forget your flu jab
ADVANCED HYPNOTHERAPY
Winter is just round the corner. You would not believe it would you after the glorious few weeks we’ve just had. With it comes the dreaded flu season. Flu occurs most often in winter and usually peaks between December and March which is why autumn is the best time of year to get your flu jab. The surgeries at the Health Centre and in Boxford have started their annual sessions and the times and venues are listed below. The Department of Health says even if you feel healthy you should definitely consider having the free seasonal flu vaccination if you have: • heart disease • lung disease, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD – includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema) • kidney disease • lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) • liver disease • had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) • diabetes • neurological condition, for example multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy • problems with your spleen, for example sickle cell disease, or you have had your spleen removed. Last winter people in these at risk groups were 11 times more likely to die from seasonal flu than people with no underlying health problems. In the UK, according to the NHS, about 600 people a year die from complications of seasonal flu. So it really is important to have flu jab . Even if you had a flu vaccination last year the authorities advise you will still need another one this year because your immunity to the flu wanes over time. Researchers say a person's immunity drops by as much as 50% six to 12 months after vaccination. If you are not eligible for a free flu vaccination on the NHS you can still have a flu vaccination privately. It will cost you £20. All you need to do is turn up at one of the sessions listed below and ask to be vaccinated.

When I entered a competition organised by the Injured Jockeys Fund way back in March little did I realize that I would end up winning it! The competition was to suggest a name for a new rose bush, the winning name I choose was “Lady Oaksey” who with her husband Lord Oaksey of Channel 4 racing have been the face of the injured Jockeys fund since its conception many years ago. The winning entry was chosen by Sir Henry Cecil the famous Newmarket race horse trainer. On Saturday 1st October Rosemary my wife and myself were treated to a days racing at Newmarket and the picture shows us with Sir Henry Cecil. As part of the prize we had a fabulous lunch and afternoon tea as well as receiving 6 of the “Lady Oaksey” rose bushes. I would say it was a wonderful day that we will remember for a long time and we also managed three winners between us. The new rose is an apricot colour in a hybrid Tea and is now available through the injured Jockeys fund although supplies are limited. Steven ‘Stan’ Grimsey

It’s along the Railway walk! The Broom and Gorse These are two very different shrubs with one thing in common. Both have a very useful relationship with bacteria to trap atmospheric nitrogen in the root system (they are Legumes - rather like peas and beans). Both grow as low shrubs, (in the UK seldom above 2 metres) have pea-like yellow flowers in spring/summer, and produce large numbers of pea-like pods in the autumn. Both tolerate poor soils and are perfectly adapted to survival on heath land. What have they been used for? Gorse (Probably Ulex Europaeus) Old-growth Gorse tends to grow into shrubs that are open at the bottom with a very dense, prickly crown. It doesn’t have any discernable leaves because the leaves are the prickles. It’s flowers - which smell of coconut appear in early spring and are gone by June. In the times before steel wire, temporary enclosures had to be made of wooden hurdles, which meant transporting the materials to and from the site, unless of course they were needed on heath land, when “old-growth” Gorse was cut and laid-out to create temporary pens for livestock. The animals spent their days foraging and were brought back at night, which created a bonus! Sheep will readily consume many heath land plants, and by moving them to-and-fro they brought the nutrients from their daytime feed back with them, thus providing much needed fertiliser to otherwise “difficult” land. When the pens were not required they were simply abandon, and the following year, repaired for re-use. Fire was one way our ancestors managed the heaths. The scorched area soon regenerates with seedlings, which were either used directly for grazing, or cut, dried and stored as fodder (similar to Hay). This process both forces the shrubs to grow very low (and therefore easily accessible for grazing animals), and extends its life span considerably before the exercise needs to be repeated. Gorse is so well adapted to this treatment that its seeds will remain dormant for long periods until “popped” by the fierce heat of the next burning cycle. As the towns expanded there was a constant demand for fuel for heating and cooking. Many timbers burn slowly and are fine for heating etc, but Gorse burns rapidly with a very intense heat and was much in demand by the bakers. Old growth Gorse was cut, tied into faggots and sold to fire their ovens. Today it uses are mainly limited to conservation and forestry projects where it is used as a nursery to protect young trees from grazing animals. After a few years the trees climb above the Gorse creating so much shade that it simply dies-off, and disappears! The Broom (Sarothamnus scoparius) This grows into a straggly, multistemmed bush without prickles. The young growth is very flexible and has five-sided (quintagonal) stems. Its leaves are very small and waxy to prevent evaporation and - like the Gorse - it is perfectly adapted life in very dry situations. One species (S. tinctoria commonly known as “Dyers Greenwood”) was used to produce a bright yellow dye which - when used with the blue dyes derived from Woad, - created the “greens” frequently seen in the clothing of the middle ages. Dyes were still being produced commercially in this way until the early 20th century The shrub is still widely used in land reclamation (old industrial or mining areas) where its long flowering period attracts bees and other insects, which in turn attracts birds. A bonus is this ability to trap nitrogen, making it available to other less well-adapted plants. Both have been very useful but their values have now largely fallen into disuse Mick T

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Well, well, well; why was I so surprised to discover that pretty well all flower and vegtable seeds on sale in the U.K, regardless of what it says on the packet, come from just one company and most are produced in different countries all over the world. I am sure that by now we are all accustomed to the idea that plenty of branded foods, medicines, cleaning products,et al come out of the same factories with different labels, but did it occur to any of us that the same applies to innocent little miracles of new life called seeds? Oh dear how gullible I am, how about you? Needless to say this information came to members straight from the ‘horses mouth’, so to speak, Tony Ward of Kings Seeds, in a most interesting and illuminating talk. He explained that Kings Seeds produce the ‘mother seeds’ that are sent to the various countries that guarantee to return the new crop of seed for sale in the U.K. The seed is then retailed via their attractive little packets that we all know so well, innocently imagining they were grown on their farms: Kings do,of course retail some of that seed under their own label. Naturally there are enormous amounts of red tape and officialdom for Kings and everyone else involved to cope with to ensure no ghastly diseases can escape either here or in the country where the ‘mother seed’ is actually grown. Of course the paperwork is prodigious with reams of documentation and theoretically many, on site checks of the crops but, yes you've guessed, it's only the U.K. that sticks with the recommended three, most only get one, And does it ever occur to us to wonder why such and such named variety from one company is so similar to that of a completely different named one from another company, no need to wonder any more; because it's the same. Differences in germination results are almost certainly due to storage conditions either at the packing company, in the retail outlet from which you bought the seeds or even in your own home. ‘No names, no pack drill", so hopefully I wont be sued for passing on trade secrets, I shall not be signing this though! News from the Garden Personal Thoughts As the leaves fall off the trees my thoughts turn to the flowers that I can look forward to seeing in the Spring. A few years ago when I planted some fruit trees in an area of grass I thought it would be a good idea to underplant the fruit trees with Spring flowering bulbs. This worked very well for a few years but gradually the weeds built up among the bulbs including one that spreads by underground roots. This meant that last year I took all the bulbs up to clear out the weeds. Now I have to make a difficult decision. Do I (a) Replant the bulbs that I lifted. (b) Leave the space under the trees free letting the space fill up with grass. (c) Buy some new bulbs to go under the trees. If I do (b) or (c) I will still have some bulbs to plant some where else or throw away. I think that I am going to put the old bulbs in the grass away from the trees. The problem with this approach is that I will not be able to cut that area of grass until late June when the bulbs have died back. This would be a problem if it was a high quality lawn, but amongst the fruit trees it is only rough grass. This year I have harvested a good crop from both my red and green grapes. In both cases the sugar content of the berries has been the highest that I have ever had I expected to get the harvest from my red grapes because those are trained inside my fruit cage. I did not expect to get the green ones because they are in the open garden and generally the blackbirds decide that they are ripe about a week before I do, and invite all their friends to enjoy the feast. This did not happen this year, so are there less blackbirds, or have they found something better to eat? Weather Records In September we had 19.4 mm (0.8") of rain, which is rather low. At the end of September the 3 month running total figure stood at 146.2 mm (5.8"), which is very close to the average figure. In September the maximum temperature was 26 Cel (79F) which is typical. The minimum was 7 Cel (45F) which is towards the top of the range we get for September. In my garden the ground temperature in mid October is 12 Cel (54F) which is normal. Hints November is a good month to have a tidy up. Clear the dead plants out of those containers and baskets. Clean them up and put them away until next year. Clear leaves off of paths before people slip on them. If you only use a greenhouse for tomatoes clean it up and leave it tidy ready for the Spring. If you use your greenhouse throughout the year, the shading will need to be cleaned off, and the glass cleaned to give the best possible light to plants during Winter. There is still time to plant shrubs and fruit trees/bushes. If you are planting

Dear Sir I agree with the letter from M. Waspe in october HCN but had not liked to air my views at the thought of appearing unchristian in my thinking. I often walk my dog through the churchyard and seen youths in the porch of the church, smoking and swearing in an uncouth manner (there is even a cigarette ash dispenser in the area, not a good image) this puts myself and visitors off going into the church. The idea of youngsters having an area where they meet up, in theory, is good as long as they dont intimidate others. Recently I passed a bench that had been placed by the path, a man sat on the bench drinking from a can, a woman dancing to loud music from a radio and swearing as I passed, she shouted something I will not repeat. It is time something was done! I’ve seen men even urinating against the church itself, it is not a good example to others especially the young. Janet Bayliss
Dear Sir I felt it only appropriate to comment and reply to the letter posted by M. Waspe (HCN October 2011). For those of you who know me, or have kept up to date on my posts, you will know that the problems caused by street drinkers has been something that I have been concerned with for some time. Currently there are no powers to prevent people drinking alcohol in public places, but this is something that I have been looking to change with the introduction of a Designated Public Place Order (DPPO). A DPPO gives Police Officers and PCSO’s the power to remove alcohol from any person in a public place if that officer believes there may be disorderly behaviour. The process of obtaining a DPPO is a long drawn out one, but I am happy to say that after nearly 3 years we are now at the consultation stage, and hopefully Hadleigh will soon see the benefits from this piece of legislation. Suffolk Police hold a strong stance on drink related anti-social behaviour. We have acted robustly and positively to reports of street drinkers in the past, and continue to do so. Arrests have been made over the summer for offences of drunk and disorderly, and for causing harassment, alarm or distress in public places. We have a power to direct a person to leave an area if we think there is a likelihood of alcohol related disorder, and many of these directions have been given to targeted individuals, both during the day, and at night. We have worked closely with Babergh District Council, and businesses to try to reduce the amount of alcohol sold to the street drinkers, and have assisted in the eviction of one predominant figure from Hadleigh. It now is a rarity for Suffolk Police to receive calls to these areas. In the early days of my role, it was common to be called to the Church and surrounding areas several times a week. Now, the behaviour has improved and it might only be once a month. We do not condone the behaviour of people who insist on becoming so drunk that they feel the need to urinate in a public place, particularly against gravestones. However, having researched calls to the Police over the summer period, I have been unable to find instances where we have been called to such problems. I would urge anybody to contact me, or the rest of the team at Hadleigh Police Station should they wish to discuss these issues. We all hold a responsibility to make our communities welcoming and friendly PC 1455 Matt Paisley
Dear Sir I am writing to you to express how upset I am. I am a young lady with a disability. I parked at the rear of the co-op in a disabled bay, and whilst getting sorted out and putting my blue badge in the window, an older 24

chap came up to the care and asked (quite abruptly) if I was disabled and looked at my badge. He didn’t go to the other cars which were parked. These cars were being used by older people who were actually getting ready to leave. So why not wait to park in that space instead of coming to me? I feel as if he targeted me just because I am young. It has knocked my confidence when going out now. If he was the warden then I wouldn’t have minded as that’s his job. I think it really unfair how people look at you because you’re young; it’s as though you have to give up the spaces to older people. I would rather not have to use these spaces but I have to, but that’s life. T. Higgs
Dear Sir Looking for Batman & Robin!!! On Saturday 1st October, I stupidly got my car stuck on a kerb in the Co-op car park and there was no way the car was moving. Two guys dressed up as Batman & Robin (seriously they were, think they were handing out leaflets) came to my rescue! They rounded up a few men from around the car park and altogether after alot of hard work, they literally lifted my car (a merc) up over the kerb and started it for me. I've only recently moved to Hadleigh and my husband was away on tour so I literally had no one to call to help me. These two guys were brilliant and were so kind to me! So I want to say a HUGE thank you to Batman and Robin and the other guys that really helped me out! Its great to know that there are still really kind people out there! Suzanne Millar
Dear Sir Can I join in? Being a member of the Howard Gibbons fan club. As they say in show business, the only bad publicity is no publicity. I would like to speak in support of Mr. Gibbons, a charming and charismatic gentleman, if a little flamboyant, always having time for a chat. In this day and age of ‘scruff’, jeans with everything, I am convinced people no longer have mirrors in their homes. That includes a whole host of television presenters. God knows when some of them last saw a professional hair dresser, even a studio hair dresser. On the other hand; I am fully convinced Mr Gibbons has many dozens of mirrors in his home. I could hardly believe what I was reading in September’s issue of the Hadleigh Community News. With your latest boast, of how many lavatories you have. Lavatories! A status symbol! A form of social standing! At seventy, that’s a first! I’ve never met anyone bragging about how many lavatories they have! Or writing about port-a-loos! Come on Sir! Now that really was a load of c....p! And you Sir, yes Sir, you Sir, being a member of the Rolls-Royce fraternity and all! A ‘hard hat’ really does not become you, it’s really not you, stick with your Rolls-Royce fraternity ‘dress code’, Panama, Topee, ideal for when you play Polo and Croquet. End of season at Hadleigh Bowling Club The first 2011 trophy to be played for was the Walter Wright Shield which took place at the end of June and was won by Barbara Bourner, David Kemp and Peter Vanstone. The event was followed by a traditional Strawberry Tea. Following the end of the 2011 local league season, August and early September were given over to the internal club mini league for the John Ward Trophy which was won by a team made up of Alex Terris, Gillian Barnes, Mike Newman, Rod and Christine Woollard and Bob Stanley. The 2011 club finals weekend took place over 17th and 18th September and with the exception of 20 minutes or so on the Sunday the weather defied the forecast by remaining reasonably warm and dry. An appreciative crowd watched the single session on the Saturday and both the sessions on Sunday. As befitting such an occasion the standard of play was high throughout the weekend with the pick of the games being the mixed pairs of Pam Horley and Tom McCrory Vs Diane Miller and Graham Digby who were all square after the 21 ends with the latter winning by 1 point on the extra end and the Ladies Pairs where Barbara Bourner and Judy Saunders came from behind to pip Peggy Hogsden and Christine Woollard over the last 2 ends to win by 2 points. The full results were as follows: Ladies Singles: Diane Miller 21 Margaret Bird 13 Elsie May Trophy: Sheila Larwill 22 Janet Hogger 12 Men’s Singles: John Hynard 23 David Kemp 13 Men’s Handicap: Ron Jenkins 21 David Stokes 17 Open Singles: Jamie Leeks 21 John Hynard 9 Two Wood Singles: Mick Marinou 15 David Kemp 8 Ladies Pairs: Barbara Bourner & Judy Saunders 18 Peggy Hogsden & Christine Woollard 16 Mixed Pairs: Diane Miller & Graham Digby 20 Pam Horley & Tom McCrory 19 Open Pairs: Rod and Christine Woollard 20 Pam Horley & John Hynard 13 Men’s Pairs: Brian Davies & Rod Woollard 24 Alex Terris and Mick Marinou 19 Mixes Triples: Pam Horley, Eric Hogger & Pat Lloyd 21, Ray Clarke, Barbara Tryon & David Miller 4 The following weekend brought the first outdoor season at Stone Street to an end with the closing drive and supper. The drive (Ladies Vs Men) saw 6 rinks in action on a fine autumn afternoon with the Ladies running out easy winners. The Fish and Chip supper was followed by live music from George Caddock and with over 100 members attending it was a rousing end to the season. Our congratulations to all our winners and we look forward to a winter of indoor short mat bowling.

1st XV is the game against Felixstowe which we won 29 – 9
Hadleigh RFC 1st XV with Club Officers
The 2011- 2012 playing season has started steadily with a win and two successive draws. The first game of the season began with a convincing 29 – 9 home win for the local side against local rivals, Felixstowe. Hadleigh then travelled away to Mistley for their second game and were seeking revenge for the previous season’s visit where Hadleigh were well beaten. This was not to be this season with a strongly fought game where Hadleigh missed several try scoring opportunities to come away with a welcome 12-12 draw. In the third game against league leaders Thetford., the home side were wary of the strong running forwards but once again the mobility of the Hadleigh forwards and stylish running of their back line saw Hadleigh take a lead which they kept up until the last quarter of the game. The eventual outcome of 21 pts each was a disappointment for the home side but a pleasant relief for Thetford. This has been the best start of a season for 4 years for the 1st XV, and already a 2nd XV team is established and looking forward to several regular fixtures this season. The season looks promising for the junior section of the club too where the Youth, Midi and Mini sections of the club have also made an excellent start. Three of the U-14s players, Tom Watts, Rob Halls and Miles Dixon have all been selected for the Suffolk Playing Squad. This itself is a landmark for the club’s junior section in its first full season fielding an U14s team. The U-9s, U-10’s, U-11’s, and U-12s teams participated in the Woodbridge Development Festival on October 8th having only completed

25 Years Celebration APPROVED BODY SHOP

TEL: 01473 747117
Yes, Hadleigh Carpet Bowls Club, was formed 25 years ago, and we are delighted to say that we still have three of the original founders, namely Mrs. Nora Kopczak, Mrs Jean Clark and Mr. William (Jock ) Clark, all being well known to our competitors in both winter and summer leagues. As a grand thank you to these three stalwarts and of course to all those who have joined over the years we are combining our Xmas party with a celebration evening dinner to be held on Friday the 16th December in the ‘small room’ at the Hadleigh town Hall, approx. time being 6.30 - 7.00 pm. Now, this is a great opportunity for all past members to come along with their wives, husbands, partners or friends to join us in this celebration , also a big welcome awaits members from other clubs who would like to join us and perhaps re-live past memories. Our Chairman Ray Gant and secretary Angela Mondon have spent much of their time in the organisation of this event and would like early notice of those wishing to come along so that they can contact the caterers for the preparation of the food; there will also be a bar for those who would like to buy wine or drinks to compliment their dinner and also there will be light musical entertainment during the evening.

Semer Airgun Society Once again its nice to report that the Semmer Airgun Society is very active with 15 to 20 of our members shooting every tuesday evening at Semer village hall. Our last report failed to be published last month due to a technical error but here it is with a little extra. In September we were requested by 23 Engineer Regiment based at Rock barracks near Woodbridge to set up and run a shooting range at their bi annual charity military open day. We arrived at the barracks at 9.15am and set up a 10 Metre 5 lane rifle range this was then inspected at around 10.30am by top ranking army officers for safety and our first aid arrangements, the inspection we passed with flying colours so we were now ready for the public who were allowed in at around noon. The weather on the day was very kind to us with hot sunshine all day and we had such an excellent attendance at our range with a 10 minute wait to shoot at times we had to set up an extra lane. With over 250 members of the public shoot on the day. We also had a draw for an air rifle + target holder + pellets this was won by a Mr B from Woodbridge and was presented on the day. I would like to thank Babergh District Council Estate Ranger Mr P.Swinney who also had energy saving information and free energy saving goodies to give away alongside our range and his help on the day with the Society equipment, plus the members who turned up in the afternoon to help make the day such a success. In October we were host to some youths from Baberghs "Be Active" scheme, this was one to one tuition in the safe handling of air weapons and some target shooting a good time was had by all who attended and we hope they will return again soon. With christmas looming our members are looking forward to our annual Golden Pellet Award Competition wich was donated by a founder member of the Society Mr T.Thomas. We have our our christmas dinner dance on the 9th December. Anyone 9 years plus with an interest in the sport of airgun shooting, gun owner or not (Society guns avaiable) is welcome to join us at Semer Village Hall Tuesday evenings 6.30 pm - 9.00 pm full disabled facilities and light refreshments are available. T. Sanger (President)

Hadleigh Swimming Club 40th Anniversary Fun Night & BBQ
RY L E N E S C AT T E R Y ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺
Oh what a night! On Friday 16th September, over 150 past and present members, teachers, committee members and families came together at Hadleigh Swimming Pool to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Hadleigh Swimming Club. There was a lot of reminiscing and sharing of memories, fun and games in the pool, followed by a tasty BBQ. Hadleigh Swimming Club was formed in 1971 and has always been run by dedicated volunteers. The current committee were truly humbled by the generosity of local individuals and businesses, to help support the Ruby Anniversary celebrations. We would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people. Chaplin Catering provided and cooked the food for the grateful masses. Many local companies provided raffle prizes: Co-op, Adnams, The Suffolk Flower Co, Hollow Trees Farm, BV Hicks, Copella, The George and Stoke by Nayland Golf & Spa. Many thanks to all of them. Fun and games were had by all in the pool, from tiny tadpoles up to their parents and more experienced members! The dressing up race was definitely the best spectacle and caused the most laughter. It shows how much fun can be had by all ages in the water. The Fun Night raised over £400, which will go towards the continued development of the teaching and coaching staff at Hadleigh Swimming Club. So thanks once again to all of those who made the evening possible, with their contributions of raffle prizes and their precious time. Here's to the next 40 years! If you are interested in joining Hadleigh Swimming Club, please come and see us on a Monday or Wednesday night between 7-7.30pm. We cater for all ages and abilities, from nonswimmers to those who wish to compete. Georgie Death
