Sir David Jason pledges support for National Air Ambulance Week of this keen interest Sir David became involved with the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) and in March 2009 was asked, and agreed, to lend his support to the work of air ambulance charities by becoming Patron of AAA. Speaking of his involvement, Sir David said: "I am honoured to be fronting the very first united National Air Ambulance Week campaign across the UK. It is vitally important that we spread the word that air ambulance charities up and down the UK are not Government funded and rely on public donations to remain operational. Everyday lives are being saved by the highly skilled air ambulance crews. Please give whatever you can spare to support your local air ambulance." The heart of the week long appeal will be very much encouraging the communities and businesses across the country to support their local air ambulance charity. By doing so it will make a huge difference and effectively help to save lives in the community that you live in. Every penny really goes a long way in helping save lives.
One of Britain’s most famous and respected actors Sir David Jason is getting behind the first united National Air Ambulance Week. Sir David has come a long way from his days as an electrician; since then he has won many prestigious awards for his work, with roles greatly varying from the comical Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, to the more serious role of Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost. Sir David became interested in flying when he was young and has a keen interest in space exploration and all things aeronautical. He started out his own flying experience in gliders and then progressed to helicopters. Because

Sir David Jason pledges support for National Air Ambulance Week 24-30 September 2012 National Air Ambulance Week is an initiative put together by the Association of Air Ambulances (‘AAA’), the trade body which unites not only Air Ambulance charities from across the country, but also operators and ambulance services. The Association gives a national voice to a local service. Clive Dickin, Director of the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA) said: “We are delighted to have Sir David Jason as our Patron. It really does help us to raise awareness of our members and the essential work that they carry out locally. Our members are encouraging fundraising very much at a grass roots level. Fundraising should be fun!” The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is encouraging its supporters to raise money by hosting their own Come EAAA-T With Me dinner party in their own home. Helen Dodman from EAAA said: “We’d love people to have a fun evening and then donate what they think the meal was worth to the charity but whatever you decide to do, rest assured that all monies raised will stay local, helping to keep your local air ambulance flying.” If you’d like further details on holding a Come EAAA-T With Me dinner party, or would like to request a fundraising pack contact Helen on 01473 745007 or email helen.dodman@eaaa.org.uk

Bildeston History Quarterly Readers have kindly loaned a variety of items that have started four investigations into life in the past, which feature in Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 4. Jane Fletcher found a trade token in her garden that has been identified as one belonging to a 17th century Bildeston shopkeeper. Research reveals why such ‘small change’ had to be produced and which other traders in the village also resorted to solving a national problem in this way. ‘Hidden Histories’ looks at a bundle of title deeds for a house in Market Place, which was formerly the home of two generations of doctors and of six rectors, as well as revealing the recipe for “Rectory Ale” but please beware of the brew’s potency. In 1885, a public information poster first saw the light of day in Bildeston not nailed on the church door, as it should have been, but on display in the post office housed in what is now Bank House Stores. And finally, after seeing the front cover of Issue 2, which showed the unveiling of the War Memorial in 1920, Pat Whymark of Hitcham loaned treasured family papers concerning her grandfather, one of the men of Bildeston so remembered, whose story is now told. Other articles cover the Baptist Church, the Bourchier family and a Member of Parliament who closed some Bildeston footpaths. Do you have any papers, pictures or memories that could be the beginning of an historical investigation? Is there a mystery in Bildeston’s past that you would like investigated? If so, please contact the magazine’s editor: Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 7BG. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 4 (Autumn 2012) is out now, price £3 Available at Bank House Stores, Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer and Keith Avis Newsagents in Hadleigh
Telephone 01787 211211 Boxford Study Centre Autumn Programme of Lectures The Boxford Study Centre has, for many years, organised lecture programmes on a range of subjects, generally biased towards history and the arts. There will be five lectures, the final one being on Tuesday 27 November. The lectures will start at 1030am. More details about these lectures will appear in the next issue. Pause for Thought Is it the end or is it the beginning? When one gets old so much has gone. Our bodies are running down and we are weak and feeble. Many friends and relatives have gone, and there is little to look forward to, and life can become all doom and gloom as you wait for the end. Praise God it doesn't have to like that. Life's end can be a beginning. The Bible promises that if I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and accept Him as my Saviour, then by His grace I can look forward to a glorious eternity with Him forever. I will be reunited with those who have gone before. The apostle Paul wrote, "...to be with Christ which is far better." It is the beginning of real life and not the end. Death becomes our friend and not out enemy. The best thing is that there is no need to wait for old age to have this blessed assurance. The joy of knowing Jesus Christ can be ours at any age. Home-Start Babergh celebrates London 2012 Home-Start Babergh took the opportunity to use its’ summer get together for families to celebrate the opening of the London 2012 Olympics. On Friday 27th July Home-Start Babergh held an Opening Ceremony Party at The Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard, where the topic was: The World is Coming to London! The party was paid for by a grant from Suffolk Celebrates the Olympics and Paralympics awarded by Suffolk County Council. On arrival families picked up their Olympic passport which allowed them to visit the five continents where they were able to take part in craft activities e.g., boomerang making for Australasia, animal face masks for Africa, Russian dolls for Europe and children were also able to have their faces painted with a country’s flag. On completion of each activity they received a sticker for their passport, a full passport was rewarded with a 2012 gift. There was also opportunities for the children to take part in some sports; javelin, hurdles, discus, football and archery, where prizes were awarded for the top scores and throws. Live Well Suffolk came along with a static bicycle for all to have a try at being the next Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy or Victoria Pendleton! Live Well were also able to advice on health and wellbeing. After all that exercise there was a sample of foods from around the world; homemade bread from Ethiopia, Pizzas from Italy, Anzac biscuits from Australia, Poppodums and Samosas from India and Bananas from Asia. It truly was a worldwide feast. The children were also given cards with various Olympians and Paralympians to keep an eye out for over the next few weeks. Sarah Mann, Scheme Leader said “It was an opportunity for families to get involved in the Olympics, something which many of them would otherwise not be able to do and to encourage the children to have a go at some of the sports.” “We are also hoping that they will follow their Olympians and Paralympians to see how well they do.” It has been another busy year for Home-Start Babergh, who during 2011/12 supported 99 families and over 250 children. If you would like to know any further information about the scheme or if you are interested in supporting us please contact; Sarah Mann on 01473 822822, e-mail; sarah@home-startbabergh.co.uk or visit our website at www.home-startbabergh.co.uk where you will find details of upcoming events such as our quiz night at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club on the 5th October.

Small is beautiful Small is beautiful, at least that’s what we think about our tiny church, St Mary’s at Aldham. This is Aldham in Suffolk. (IP7 etc) The church stands on a slight hill on the edge of the Crockatt’s farm; it looks out across sloping fields to a huge Suffolk skyline. It has a round tower but is otherwise pretty unremarkable. On the last weekend in September we are holding an art sale in aid of the church. I am writing to all our local artists to ask for a donation of a small and beautiful painting of yours for the sale. (I believe we all have one small picture knocking around that hasn’t sold yet which could go to a good home!) If the experience of friends is anything to go by, this year’s exhibitions are not selling many paintings. So we are not going to charge more than £10 a piece; don’t be shocked, we are not trying to devalue the market but simply introduce hard up local families to the joys of choosing a picture for their home. We shall be leafleting the surrounding estates and villages (Kersey, Whatfield¸ Aldham, Hintlesham and Chattisham) nearer the time in the hope of attracting an unusual clientele. Coffee and cakes and a playroom for children will be on offer. Dog walkers and cyclists will be encouraged to drop in. Canvas and board pictures do not have to be framed, watercolours and sketches need to be mounted and protected with cellophane. If you feel you could support this very lowly sale, without compromising your esteemed reputation in any way, please contact Cherry Crawford 01473 829670 www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

Community groups across the district could be on the receiving end of a cash incentive from the £100,000 capital grants scheme at Babergh District Council. Babergh is currently on the look-out for new projects from across the whole of the district, which represents the progress and development of community projects of local facilities. Babergh is interested in projects that can help to benefit the local communities - these could be in the form of wildlife centres, village hall improvements, sports or play projects and transportation facilities for community use. The only requirement is the projects that apply to Babergh's Community Grants programme have to ensure they have already secured at least a 3rd of the total project fund. Babergh has successfully helped a number of community projects over the last year which includes: Chelmondiston Jubilee Garden - £1,500, Thorpe Morieux – Open Space – £2,113, Capel Community Centre – upgrade to toilets - £3, 000, Hartest Bowls Club – bowls equipment - £750. Jo Beever, who is Babergh's Community Grants Officer, said: "We would like all applicants wishing to apply to be aware that they will need to demonstrate a basic need for their project and proove that they have made considerable effort to obtain money from other sources," Jo said. "All applications are on a 'first come, first served' basis and we would prefer any forthcoming applicants to contact Babergh first to discuss as to whether their application is relevant." Babergh District Council are pleased to be able to encourage applications to our Capital Grants programme. While budgets are under severe pressure and a number of savings have been made in a variety of ways, this fund is available to help improve the facilities that are already available within communities. All areas of spending are under review but our Grant Aid is there to help support communities to help themselves. Improving facilities is a key part of this help and we hope that by continuing to provide this kind of support we can nurture community projects and help show that with ambition and hard work it is still possible to achieve improvements despite the difficult economic times For more information on Babergh’s grant programme please visit Babergh’s website on www.babergh.gov.uk/babergh/communitygrants, call: 01473 825872 or email: grants@babergh.gov.uk. Babergh would also urge any potential applicant to contact Babergh Communities Together (BCT), a charity that can help explore other funding options as well as helping with the application forms and providing administrative support. Call Babergh Communities Together on 0845 260 6340 or email: info@bctsuffolk.org.uk. Jim Brown, from Suffolk County Council also provides funding advice for Babergh based capital projects, you can contact him on 0780 959 4530 or jim.brown@suffolk.gov.uk

Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline
On Sunday 5th August the group of Children who have been with us for the last month returned home. We arrived at Gatwick Airport with 22 children and 56 pieces of luggage which included 6 bags of clothing, medicines etc which were collected by Father Dennis to be distributed to people in need in his parish and two bags for the Childrens Cancer Hospital and Baby No 1 Orphanage that I will deliver in September when in Belarus. Thank you to everyone whose contributions were included in these bags. All children have arrived home safely. They left Needham Market at 8.45 am and they did not reach Cherikov until 1 am but were happy to see their parents waiting for them. All parents have asked me to pass on their thanks to everyone for taking such good care of their children and giving them such good memories. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped to make this visit such a success. Not only must we thank our host families for their work in this project but also the many people who support us throughout the year, raising funds to enable us to bring the children and providing sponsored outings and events for them whilst they are here, giving their time free of charge, providing valuable dental and optical services free of charge, collecting clothing, donating medicines to take home and many other items which all benefit either these children or those at home in Belarus. All the photos can be viewed at: www.alphacenturi.com/ccll and anyone who is not involved in the group can click on the link to request the password to view all files and videos. During the leaving party last Friday a video was shown of the visit highlights, this can be viewed directly at youtube by clicking on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tEKDrhNKhM If you would like to help in any way at all, either Hosting a child in 2013 or contributing something, no matter how small, to the items we are collecting, please do get in touch. Howard at Norfolk Broads My dear readers this month news reached me of a new coffee shop at Kersey Mill. Kimberley Morton has opened “Little Treats Bakery”. I paid a visit and thoroughly enjoyed myself. A whole range of coffees was available. I gazed over the counter at Kimberley’s scones and indeed they were worthy of a second glance. They would certainly give my house keeper Maria’s a run for their money. I drooled at the thought that they would soon be a reality on my plate; they were lovely, warm and moist and served with butter, jam and whipped double cream. There were all sorts of other cakes and goodies and one could also have a light lunch. Several friends and clients from Hadleigh were enjoying a coffee and all in all it was a convivial experience. Why not pop into Kersey Mill and treat yourself. Now, as you know, I have just clipped 50 although I can get away with saying that I am 39! I expect that like me you get the odd ache and pain. Well, a friend of mine has suggested that I should be taking a table spoon of Cider vinegar every day and presented me with a bottle as a gift. It is rather sour but I will let you know if I find myself more supple than I was. It is a year ago since I was photographed with an avenue of portaloos from Capel Plant. If you need plant, power tools, compressors, cement mixers, wacker plates, gas cylinders and of course portaloos and such like then give Chris Dovey a call at Capel Plant (Tel. 01206 844004). I am sure that you will find their pricing competitive and an excellent service. I laid some hard core and even had my mother walking behind a wacker plate but you will have to push your own! We have enjoyed one or two lovely days and I have taken the opportunity to motor up to the Norfolk Broads with my mother. The picture shows me at Strumpshaw which is a lovely spot and off the beaten track. One has to cross the Wherry Line and in the middle of nowhere is a 24 hour manned level crossing! You may also care to try the Beauchamp Arms at Buckenham NR14 6DH for a pleasant lunch and to watch the boats sail by. As the children go back to school and holidays come to an end some of you will be considering whether to move house. If that is so, please do come and have a word with us. We provide a wealth of experience to assist you in any sale or purchase. In an age where we are knee-deep in call centres, we provide an old fashioned service where you can come and see us and take the advice that you need all supported by cutting edge facilities. Similarly, if you are bereft of a Will then it would be a good idea for you to deal with that too. Howard Gibbons

New Home Heating with Health Benefits It’s good to see that in this gloomy economic climate, a new company called Igloo is offering a new approach to home heating which can save you up to 60% on your heating bills, has health benefits and is eco-friendly. Igloo Heating Panels radiate heat from Infrared Energy which is the same energy produced by the sun. Instead of warming and circulating the air, like convection waterfilled radiators, Igloo panel’s heat up the walls and the items around you and not the air, so there are no drafts and minimal heat loss when a door is opened and the air is always fresh. In fact some of the health benefits are quite surprising. As the walls are heated there can be no mould from moisture. As there is no circulation of air, there is significant reduction of dust which can really help asthma and allergy sufferers. This heating method has been proven to help the immune system and S.A.D sufferers. As Igloo panels don’t use convection they can be fitted on the ceiling or it can be a mirror in the bathroom or a marble panel in the kitchen. It is estimated that 50% of all pollution is from heating homes and the work environment and over the next few years a 20% to 30% harmful gas reduction policy will be put into operation. Natural energy resources are running out and continue to rise in cost, power stations are programmed to be built and electricity will be the energy source of the future. Although the Igloo system operates on electricity, the amount needed to run it is far less than any other and very cost effective to install. Couple this with Igloos’ fully programmable, wireless controller you have an easy to fit and service-free system with a five year guarantee. It is also completely silent! Not only are you paying more for the energy that powers your existing set-up, you also have to add servicing to the bill. Other cost savings are no more need for plumbers. Burst pipes and costly call out fees would be things of the past. So, if you’re fed up with spending your hard earned cash on your oil, gas or your storage heaters then take a look at the Igloo website and invest in the future and arrange your free survey now. www.iglooheat.co.uk
Calendar Girls at The Quay Theatre The hit play Calendar Girls, by Tim Firth and based on the Miramax motion picture, is presented by Sudbury Dramatic Society at the Quay Theatre, Sudbury from Friday 12th October to Saturday 20th October at 7.45pm, with Saturday Matinees at 2.00pm (no performance Sunday 14th October.) Inspired by actual events, Calendar Girls is the moving but often hilarious story of some WI members who pose nude for a calendar to raise funds to buy a sofa at the local hospital after one of their number, Annie, loses her husband to cancer. News of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The play was described by the Mail on Sunday as “marvelous theatre, guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and come out singing Jerusalem.” The play contains nudity. Tickets can be booked by calling the Quay box office on 01787 374745.

‘Shakespeare’s Women’ - a weekly 10 session course by tutor Ron Marks starting Wednesday 19 September Shakespeare, according to Professor Harold Bloom, “invented the human as we continue to know it.” This course explores a number of the female characters Shakespeare invented for boys and men to act. We shall discuss Shakespeare’s women as lasses with lovers, as wives with husbands, as maidens and as mistresses, virgins and adulteresses, as mothers with sons and as daughters with fathers, as ladies and their companions, as queens at war and at court, as “viragos” and “victims”! We shall examine Shakespeare’s “empowerment” of his women and their relationships both with their men and with one another and see how much justification there may be for the suggestion that Shakespeare’s women, at least, are the deadlier of the species... Whetted your appetite? Then why not come along to this weekly course starting on Wednesday 19 September from 2 pm - 3.30 pm at the Hadleigh Library Seminar Room. If you are not sure if this is for you, why not come along to the first session to find out, there is no commitment. For further information and cost please contact Miranda on 01473 822596

St Elizabeth Hospice and Country Threads ReLoved
Health and Fitness at Kersey Mill
OPENING OCTOBER This fully refurbished gym on the beautiful setting of Kersey Mill will be offering a friendly environment with highly qualified trainers. Creating for the ReLoved project Members of the Country Threads craft group were delighted to learn that local sales of tickets for the St Elizabeth Hospice raffle netted the princely sum of £611.00. Punters were clearly tempted, not only by the worthy cause, but also, for the opportunity to win the group’s magnificent hand crafted quilt. The raffle, which was launched in May, was drawn on 3rd August 2012 at The Hospice. When all the sums were done it yielded a staggering £36,000. The organisers and the quilters would like to say a big thank you to all who contributed and made this impressive total possible. For winning ticket numbers visit:www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/news/447/Summer-raffle-winners-announced The group’s next fund raising challenge for the same charity has already started. The ReLoved project involves recycling donated materials to create items for the Hospice shop at Aldeburgh. Some of the ladies have already visited the warehouse where the fabrics etc. are kept and brought back an interesting miscellany of goodies t o be transformed into attractive, saleable merchandise for that retail outlet. If you would like be part of the ReLoved initiative just come along to the URC rooms at 7pm on a Wednesday evening and ‘create’ with this friendly, welcoming group. No experience necessary just a cheery disposition and a willingness to have a go. For further info call Mavis 01473 824398 or Lin 01473 828065. Energy on Tap Limited is a new Hadleigh based company that aims to reduce your energy bills with clever energy solutions. We are an independent family business, fully accredited and equipped to take on your project. In addition to traditional electrical and plumbing work, we specialise in energy saving and approach every job from an energy performance point of view. We install renewable technologies such as; solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wood pellet boilers and rainwater harvesting systems. So why choose renewables? The government’s determination to achieve their carbon reduction targets means that we are all being forced down the energy saving route. Increasing the price of conventional fuels and banning wasteful products such as the 60W light bulb, are two ways that we are being squeezed. But it’s not all bad news. The government are also providing some generous financial incentives for those who take up energy saving schemes. The ‘Feed in Tariff’, which is paid for generating your own electricity with solar panels provides an excellent return which means PV systems can pay for themselves after just 5-6 years. The ‘Renewable Heat Incentive’ and ‘The Green Deal’ are similar schemes that will offset the cost of installing heating systems. 6 ways we can help: • Energy Performance Assessments – to identify areas for improvement • Solar Photovoltaic Installations – to generate your own electricity and income • Solar Thermal Installations – to generate your own hot water • Wood Pellet Boilers – ideal replacement for oil boilers for heating and hot water • Unvented Domestic Hot Water Cylinders – for the efficient storage of hot water • Rainwater Harvesting – to collect, store and use your own rainwater If you’re worried about rising fuel prices and you want to lower your bills, or you just want advice on how to save energy then call us at Energy on Tap Limited. For more info on all our services check out our website at www.energyontap.co.uk

Are you Warm as Toast? Have your heating bills been sky high this year? If so, then this may help: The 'Warm as Toast' Greener Homes scheme supported by Suffolk County Council and the District/Borough Councils of Suffolk, offers FREE home insulation to residents (subject to survey and existing levels of insulation). What is more, for every home that takes up the offer, £15 will be donated to one of the schools/groups that have registered with this scheme. By getting your home fully up to spec with cavity wall insulation and the recommended 12 inches (30cm) of loft insulation, your home can be warm as toast next winter. According to figures from the Energy Saving Trust, cavity wall insulation can typically reduce fuel bills by £135 per year, whilst loft insulation typically can reduce bills by £175. But you need to be quick, this scheme finishes on 30th September - so make sure you don't miss out! For the second year running Hadleigh based GRO Landscapes has been awarded a Silver Gilt Certificate for its entry at the prestigious Sandringham Flower Show. Thousands of visitors flocked to the one day show on the Royal Estate, and was able to inspect the entries in both the small and large gardens sections. This year’s entry by GRO Landscapes was titled “Cube” and was an example of a small courtyard garden space in which to relax and unwind, and which requires minimum maintenance. The main structure was a timber open-sided cube, with a paved floor of sandstone and retro blocks. At the back of the cube was a clear Perspex panel holding back a wall of pebbles, which was complimented by a similar water feature to the front of the garden. Woven fence panels provided elegant screening with soft planting of mixed herbaceous perennials and other plants. The Cube was designed by GRO Landscapes owner Guy Ormes and was praised by judges Alan Mason and Chris Beardshaw for its innovation and attention to detail. The small garden took four days to build, and Guy Ormes said he was delighted with the award which reflected the effort put in by all involved including his wife Vicky and Jack Warner. With thanks to his sponsors, Jacksons Fine Fencing, Collier & Catchpole and Aggbag

A Real Alternative to Oil and Gas Very high efficiency 94% Greater flexibility as output is matched by demand Part of the Microgeneration Scheme (MCS) Earn while you save on your fuel bills Lower energy consumption and reduced fuel bills
Offering 94% efficiency, the Biomass Boiler is an attractive alternative to more conventional off-gas heating solutions such as oil and LPG. Cleaner and less volatile, biomass boilers are also independent of the fluctuating prices of oil and gas. For maximum efficiency the boiler automatically modulates output to between 100% and 30% (12kW - 3.8kW), adapting to meet your heating demands whether you have a 2, 3 or 4 bed home. As well as lowering your fuel bills and your carbon footprint, households with a biomass boiler heating system may earn 9p per kWh of heat generated under the Government's Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme.

The charity has a van and team of volunteer drivers who will pick up good quality items from your home, Monday to Saturday. The Hospice is also appealing for more volunteer van drivers who can spare half a day or a full day a week. Jason Rudderham, retail area manager at the Hospice, said “This is a great time of year to have a sort out and donate any furniture you don’t want any more to the Hospice. You may have furniture that no longer fits with your colour scheme or you might just fancy a change. “Our shops are great for the environment as they allow goods to be reused and recycled and the funds raised enable St Elizabeth Hospice to continue to make a real difference to the lives of our patients and their families.” To donate furniture call 0845 259 0319. Stott Pilates® Reformer Training in Whatfield I was not surprised to hear more than one Olympic athlete mention Pilates when talking about their training routine – everyone knows that it strengthens your ‘core’. But what most people think of as ‘Pilates’ probably isn’t what the athletes are practicing! They were probably talking about Pilates on the Reformer, which is a large piece of equipment with springs and pullies and was where the work of Joseph Pilates began. However, Pilates on the Reformer isn’t just for Olympic athletes but can be used by everyone not just in sport but for all who wish to have better posture or as an aid to recovery after an injury or surgery. Joseph Pilates started to develop his system whilst working with injured soldiers returning from the Front and found that those that he worked with had a better recovery. After the war he travelled to America where he set up his studio and worked with injured ballet dancers and refined his technique. So you can see, Pilates exercises can be modified to fit the individual. My training is the Stott Pilates® Method, the origins of which can be traced back to Joseph Pilates’ original New York Studio, and is recognised throughout the world. This method builds on the original foundations but has ensured that the programme continues to be aligned with current scientific and biomechanical research. With over 20 years as a Fitness Professional and Remedial Pilates instructor, and with experience of Cancer rehab, ME and MS, I can offer a range of packages to suit individual needs. So whether you are looking for improved general fitness and posture sport or work related, or recovery after an injury or surgery, please phone to see how I can help you on 01473 810192

Emma Clarke joined Slimming World weighing 14 stones 9 and a half pounds, wearing size 18 clothes. Now in size 10! And down to 10 stones 7 pounds, Emma has more energy for the children she teaches as a Primary School teacher and a new love for food and exercise. Emma says; “When I met my fiancée ten years ago, I was a lot smaller, and the weight piled on over the years through being comfortable with life”. “Losing weight has made me happier in my own skin, more energy, and I have found new foods and activities that I love. I have joined a local gym, something that I would never have considered before, and now go three times a week! Spin class, Zumba, all of which I thoroughly enjoy and it helps me relax off some of the stresses and business of work”, “I now have a new love of vegetables; especially the more unusual that I had never tried before. Before this weight loss I hated fruit! Absolutely hated it! Now I take melon to work where my colleagues have certainly noticed the changes”. “Joining Slimming World has also changed the way my fiancée eats, enjoying new flavours like the Slimming World curries, he did not like curry at all before”. “I am loving to clothes shop now, trying different sizes and styles, as staying with Slimming World will ensure this weight keeps off! Everyone has a ‘fat’ day, but mine are almost non-existent now, and nothing like they used to be”! Emma attends Slimming World in Hadleigh – at the Guildhall. Local Care Home is Blooming Marvellous ! Waterfield House Care Home in Grays Close, Hadleigh is officially “Bloomin Marvellous”. The Home has just been announced as the winner of the Runwood Homes Senior Living Annual Competition designed to encourage Residents to get involved in creating beautiful gardens which they enjoy and be proud of. The Home entered the Competition in April 2012 and despite the frustration of the non stop rain, somehow managed to have the gardens ready for the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on the 3rd June, 2012. To mark the special event, the raised flower beds were planted out in red, white and blue by Residents and Staff ! Several pots and baskets were also kindly donated for the front entrance and also bedecked in red, white and blue. Kerry Smith, Regional Manager said “ special thanks must go to the residents and families at Waterfield who made such a huge effort to make the gardens look so wonderful for the Jubilee Celebrations. Led by Jill Ready, the Home’s Activities Coordinator, it was a tremendous team effort with the end result being greater enjoyment of the gardens by all.”

Hadleigh Chamber Series Since moving to Hadleigh a few years ago, I have been enjoying the country life after fifteen years of London. I have set up some harp teaching in a few Suffolk schools and have some private harp students, however my playing work mostly takes me away from Suffolk. This made me think that it would be nice to set up a Chamber Music Series in St Mary's Church. I am hoping to run 3-6 concerts a year, sometimes featuring myself and sometimes my friends. There are all sorts of wonderful combinations of instruments to be heard! The format is to be a concert for children in the afternoon at 3pm and then a more traditional evening concert at 7.30pm.The first will be the beautiful combination of the flute, viola and harp on the 22nd September. Local artist Hilli Thompson will be exhibiting some of her work in the church that day. As will Matthew Tsmarkalis. So, even if you are unable to come to either concert, please do pop in while we are are rehearsing. They will both have items for sale. Tatty Broyds and Osborn & William will also be running small stalls and St Mary's are providing a refreshment service. I do hope that I shall see lots of you there. Please get in touch if you have any questions at all. Or any requests for future combinations of instruments/pieces that you would like to hear in St Mary's. (helen.sharp@me.com, 01473 822442) I am extremely grateful to Tatty Broyd's, Osborn & William, St Mary's and Adnams Cellar and Kitchen for their support in this venture

The first one you’ll think of when I mention these creatures is the Black-Slug (Arion ater). It’s the largest in the UK up to 100mm (4 inches) long and lives mainly on rotting vegetation, fungi and occasionally rotting meat. But there are several others Red-Slug (Arion rufus) are a little smaller than the black variety (5060mm (2.5 inches) long and not quite so rounded. They often have a bright orange “rim” round their lower edge. The ones the farmers and gardeners dislike because of the damage they do are the Field-Slug (Derocereas reticulatum) and Garden Slug (Arion hortensis) both are up to 4050mm long with colours varying from almost white to grey/green stripes. They’ll eat almost any form of vegetation. Keel Slug (Tandoria budapestensis) These are quite small (only around 25 mm) and vary in colour from black to almost white. They live mainly underground; eating-off plant roots and boring holes into root-crops like potatoes. Technically they are all Molluscs belonging to a group called “Gastropods” and are distantly related to things like the snails and octopus. There are only the five species native to the UK and I’ve found all of them along the Railway, however worldwide there are thousands, living in every type of environment except deserts. They’re a very strange and different group of animals – I’ll explain! As you can see in the photos they appear to have four eyes, each at the end of a stalk. The real eyes - the upper pair – are very basic and best described as “light-receptors”; able to detect light and dark, and probably some images, but little detail. The lower pair are sensory organs able to detect sounds, vibrations, and smells within their environment. All four are retractable and can be drawn back into the head for protection. One of the wonderful things is that losing one of these organs in an accident is not a problem – Slugs simply grow a new one. Their blood is very different to ours! Humans and most animals carry oxygen round their bodies using red blood (haemoglobin) which is based on iron. In slugs it is based on copper, making it very pale green (cyanoglobin), which is why you never see any real “blood” if you tread on one. They have a brain of sorts. It’s not a single organ like ours but a number of coordinated nerve centres distributed throughout their body, each controlling specific body-parts. They have to breathe to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen the same as we do, but they don’t have lungs. A slug does it by drawing air through a hole at the back of its head (you can see this happening in the photos) into a single chamber where the gases are exchanged through a very fine membrane. Their hearts are different! Humans have four chambers with which to pump the blood round our bodies, theirs only a single chamber. We can walk about, but they move by “sealing” the lower surface of their bodies to things with a layer of slime, and by changing the shape of their muscles they “slide” themselves forward using suction to “hang-on” to almost any solid surface. Dry, dusty surfaces will defeat them, but loose surfaces are OK as long as they not too steep. They don’t have any hard skeleton and can “flow” through quite small holes simply by changing their body shape, once through they’ll chew their way through any plant material they find. (Yes - they’ve actually got teeth resembling the surface of a very course engineer’s metal-working file). I can’t say that they’ve got any particular appeal to me as animals, but they are certainly different and interesting! Mick T

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Boy! Did I need that rest but, I’m now looking forward to the Autumn Term which will start on Monday 10th September. Before the break we had all been busy at the Shelley Centre with lots of fundraising happening around the place, along with all the special events and achievements happening. Although this being said it is always busy around summer time at the Shelley Centre, with all the horses looking forward to the holidays. I heard that Shannon may be going to the Caribbean, but that may just be horsey rumour. I never have travelled anywhere, although I do love it in this room, it’s lovely and warm all year round, however I wish I could get hold of some of that lovely green grass: it’s been growing wonderfully at the moment and it’s making all the horses put on weight, if they eat much more their girth will not fit (How embarrassing would that be!). But Lyn will soon get them back in to shape, Rupert will not like that. We sometimes have conversations when she is on her lunch break – which brings me to a little secret – but, then, thinking about it, it is a secret so I mustn’t tell otherwise no one will tell me anything anymore. I was pleased that Isabel won a Highly Commended Medal for Special Achievement in Riding from the Wednesday pm ride for overcoming great barriers and still being able to ride with confidence, and Ivan from the Tuesday morning group won the Cup. We also had the Shelley Show during June, which was great apart from the English weather. The Shelley Centre has decided to showcase this event every year, and this time some generous sponsors donated some spectacular winner cups; however my winning days are over although I did like being a champion, I thought it suited me. Lots of the riders showed their skill and connection between themselves and the horse. Overall the event was a success with the dressage and countryside challenge competitions. One of my favorite riders who came first in the junior dressage trot class scoring 89 points was riding Holly. Holly and I sometimes have some great talks through the room window and I hope to think that we get on really well, but we haven’t been able to talk much recently with her busy schedule, and even when she is at her stable, she is always trying to get rid of the flies, which are a problem this time of year as they affect all the horses, but Lyn does have her magic spray, which makes it all better. Something special happened during June with a special award being given out. On the 27th two great boys had their Horse Care Bronze test, which is a first for the Shelley Centre on records and they scored 98% which is fantastic. And it gets even better, because one of the boys told me that they were the highest marks ever given, and the star quality folders which they produced have been taken by the examiners to be sent to the National office to be photocopied, to be shown as an example to other people who attempt this hard but worthwhile award. The whole centre has heard about this award and that they are all known across the place and people are very proud, especially Anne their ride Instructor who prepared them for the test. June was a great month and I am buzzing all over because of it. The place is full of good spirit and joy which is always a good thing to end a year on, and I am so excited for September when we all start in over again. I do hope to see everyone back well and fighting fit including the horses. The holiday is a great time to let my mane down, although saying that I do get a bit lonely but we will see people around and about making sure that we all get fed and exercised, which is a shame for Jet because he just loves to be lazy unlike Fleur and Holly who will gallop and roll about all day. Sunday, September 16th is the day of the Long Distance Sponsored Ride, our annual event, and as usual Entry Forms are available from Maggie Rayner by emailing maggierayner@hotmail.com so please get your entries in soon!! Oh! By the way, before I go I have a confession to make‌‌it wasn’t me who wrote the Blog this time: I’m going to spill the beans‌‌it was Rowan and Nathanial Haste, those same great boys who passed the Horse Care Bronze test with flying colours‌‌well done boys!!! News from the Garden Personal Thoughts The Olympics are over. We have celebrated the athletes, the volunteers, and the buildings, but very little has been said about the park and garden that has been created to contain the buildings, and very few gardeners have had the chance to see it. If you wonder what I am talking about, type "garden olympic park" into your favourite internet search engine, and look at the pictures that come up. The organisers gave the visiting sports enthusiasts a display of British Gardening at its best. The pictures suggest that the bedding displays were as good as those at the 10 yearly Floriade exhibition at Venlo on the Dutch German boarder to which I went. It will be interesting to see what the Olympic Park looks like next year. There was quite a lot in common between the ideas used in the two gardens. Both had super colourful examples of highly managed meadow planting largely based on British Wildflowers and Grasses. Both had perennial borders based on plants originating on the North American Prairies. The popular bedding plants at Floriade were, Echinacea (The Purple Cone Flower) , Verbena bonariensis, and Gaura Lindheimer. I use and am familiar with the first two, but the Gaura was a surprise. I tried it once, and was disappointed with it. I shall have to try it again. In common with a lot of people in Hadleigh I did not spray early enough and got caught by potato blight this year. I quickly removed the tops, and have got a useful crop although nowhere near what it would have been if I could have let them grow to maturity, Apples and tomatoes are very late ripening, but runner and french beans are doing well. Open Gardens Sept 1-2 Moverons Brightlingsea CO7 0SB Sept 9 Home Farm House Rushbrooke IP30 0EP Sept 9 Lucy Redman Garden 6 The Village Rushbrooke IP30 0ER Weather Records In July at Kersey there were 98.1 mm (3.9") of rain. This is nearly twice our average monthly rainfall. This rainfall brought the 3 month figure up to 233 mm (9.2") which is 1.55 times the average rainfall. At first sight we have now had plenty of rain, but so far in August the heavy rain seems to have missed us, and after a series of hot dry days I am finding it necessary to water some shallow rooted plants. In July the maximum temperature was 29 Cel (84F). The minimum was 8 Cel (46F), both of which are typical for the month. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 19 Cel (66F), which is the warmest that I have recorded. Hints By September most annuals will be past their best, so we have to rely on the late flowering summer perennials like michaelmas daisies, and sedums to provide the floral display supported by half hardy perennials like dahlias and a second flush on some of the roses. In all cases it is worth cutting dead flowers off as this promotes more flowers. September is the right time to tidy up lavender bushes, but do not cut back into old wood, as lavenders will not shoot from old wood. September is the month to buy Spring flowering bulbs. If you want to have them flowering indoors for Christmas they need to be planted immediately. To be successful the bulbs have to make good roots in advance of sending up their flower spikes. To do this they need to be kept quite cool after planting, and in the dark. This is not easy in a modern house. One could bury the planted pots in the garden, but if the bulbs are being grown in bulb fibre in pots with no drainage holes they are likely to get too wet. I have used the attic, but then you do need to remember to water them occasionally. September is a good time for taking cuttings of plants that you want to increase. The range of possibilities is wide. Three inch half hard non flowering shoots will work for a lot of plants. I shall be using the technique on a new penstemon and a new campanula that I bought. Enjoy your gardening, John Rye

Babergh/Mid Suffolk: Councillors & Communities together shaping the future For the next few months and beyond, councillors from across south and central Suffolk will be attending meetings and organising opportunities to listen to the ideas and concerns of local groups and business and campaigning organisations. The aim of these meetings is for councillors from across the political spectrum in Babergh and Mid Suffolk to find out everything they can about residents’ and others’ attitudes, aspirations and challenges for the future as the two councils face a prolonged period of financial cutbacks. The long-term financial squeeze being faced by councils and indeed the whole of the public sector and the uncertainties surrounding the wider economy have prompted Babergh and Mid Suffolk to embark on a long-term programme of dialogue with community groups to find out both what they want from the future and what skills and assets they already have to realise that future. According to Babergh’s Strategy Committee Chairman, Cllr. Jennie Jenkins “the community engagement process upon which we are about to embark between now and the autumn is our chance to have a really meaningful dialogue with as many groups and individuals about how our councils can work with communities to maximise the impact of the reduced resources in the longerterm. “We want to find out as much as we can about the people who live and work in our communities, the critical issues for them and their key needs, what we should be doing to help, what we might be able to encourage communities to do for themselves or that we can get others to do and what is already being done that we can support and others might also learn from!” Cllr. Tim Passmore, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council explained that “this is very different from previous consultations in that we are starting with a blank sheet and are looking at what kind of communities people want to live in not just in the next year but over the next few decades and more”. “This kind of longer-term planning means that we have to start by asking much more open questions – not so much about what services our councils should or should not be providing in an age of austerity, but about what kind of towns and villages we want ourselves and your children to live in. We are encouraging councillors to ask some really big questions of their communities, including issues connected to economic development such as new job s and houses to support those jobs”. The type of ‘big’ questions being asked are: • What’s good about living here? • What do you want to change? • What type of people are involved in community activities? • Who aren’t so involved – and why not? • What community facilities are there? Which are being well used? Which are under-used? • What should the councils (Babergh/Mid Suffolk) be doing more – and less – of in the future? What should we stop doing or start doing? What can communities do more of for themselves? • What do communities need from the Council? • What is the state of the local economy (How well are local firms doing, what are local job prospects like? What training opportunities are there for younger people? The two councils’ 83 elected representatives are being encouraged to meet with people in as many ways as they see fit including through meetings, oneto-one conversations, phone conversations, email contacts, social media and even by just people watching in observing what’s going on in villages and towns for a couple of hours. The insights gained from these encounters will provide important evidence for both councils as they strive to sharpen their priorities and make a sustained positive difference to the wellbeing of communities even as their staffing levels and financial resources are reduced. Information about what both councils are terming their Community Engagement 2012 – including up-to-date information about meetings and other events at which councillors will be present for a dialogue will be posted up on both councils’ websites – with reminders being provided as needed including leaflets in the neighbourhood and social media updates.
Start your model railway journey here Model trains have always kept my memories of days of steam train rides alive in my mind, and a few years ago I began to make myself a model railway layout in a spare room in my house. My interest in train modelling recently came to fruition when my layout was featured as an article in the ‘Railway Modeller’ magazine for August 2012. I would like to share my enthusiasm with other people who are likeminded and be interested in starting up a group to share interests and share skills from each other, or perhaps you would just like to look first at one or two such layouts here in Hadleigh for free and without obligation. You may like to bring one or two youngsters to see my layout and/or you may like to see my model yourself. If you are at all interested please ring me and I shall be delighted to introduce you to what can be the magical world of railway modelling. Roy Holloway 01473 823169 26

Hadleigh Vs. Bildeston Challenge match results in an excellent afternoon’s celebration of tennis
Maintenance Person / Builder Required For a small farm and three properties in Stoke By Nayland along with industrial premises in Hadleigh. The role will be varied to include general building work and farm maintenance. Ideally we are looking for someone who is cheerful and from a building background. The hours/days are negotiable and can be part or full time. Pay would be dependent on ability.
For more information and to apply please contact Nicola Halls on 01473 828176. On Saturday 10th August the “1881 Challenge Match” between Hadleigh Tennis club and Bildeston Tennis Club look place. The gentlemen’s doubles match, which is the foundation of this event, commemorates Hadleigh Tennis Club’s oldest recorded match, having first been played in June 1881. Last year, 130 years after the original match, the two clubs decided to re-establish the match and add to it a ladies doubles match, playing for a new challenge cup and plate. At this inaugural replay in 2011, the Hadleigh teams won both the cup and the plate. This year however, after a well fought match, Martin Rodgers and Richard Breeze of Bildeston won the gentlemen’s doubles 6:2, 6:4 which means that Bildeston will now hold the “Challenge Cup” until the next meeting in 2013. The ladies’ faired better and were able to ensure that Hadleigh retained the “plate”, with Sandy Claireaux and Deborah Young winning 6:1, 6:2. 2012 also saw a mixed doubles match added to the event, and here again, the Hadleigh team of Jan Richards and Ben Daniels were the winners. On this occasion, the matches and post-match celebrations were excellently hosted by Bildeston and unusually for this summer season the event took place on a lovely sunny afternoon. Many thanks to the players, organisers and spectators, who made the 131st year of the Hadleigh/Bildeston Challenge match so enjoyable. Hadleigh Tennis club plays (from March to October), on three sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. 2012 annual membership fees are being held at £100 for adults and £60 for students. If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com or contact Paul Knowles on 01473 828983

Newton youngsters show potential Two Newton Green Golf Club girls performed well enough in the English Girls' Under 15s Championship to suggest they could make an impact on the tournament's leader border in the the next couple of years. Alice Barlow and Eloise Aldous both made the cut for the final two rounds of the four round championship held at Delamere Forest Golf Club - and both qualify to play in the competition for a further two years. Alice Barlow finished 15th and Eloise, who recovered after a nightmare third round, was placed 35th. With the tournament winner scoring a nine over par gross 297 for the four rounds, Alice was on 326, one of the best net scores in the championship, and Eloise 355. Eloise shot two respectable openig rounds of 83 and 86, but the very demanding Delamere course reduced her to total of 103 for the third round, before she made a recovery for a commendable 83 in the fourth outing. The highlight of the four rounds for Alice was a sparkling 73 (net 64) in the third round.

In the early eighties, after Bob Carr initially started Hadleigh Hares Running Club, Colin Ablitt and Steve Wilkinson got together with their children, Richard, James and Neil and Hadleigh Hares Juniors was born. Over a period of time more and more children got involved from the school, up to a stage where we were coaching about 25 youngsters on Friday sessions. This was mainly geared to speed work and middle distance. We used to do a meeting in Ipswich called Shri Chimnoy at Chantry Park and it was wonderful to see the red and white colours showing up in such good numbers. By this time we had parents approaching us to join our club. These people came from Colchester, Dedham, Ipswich and Stowmarket. The Friday sessions were run by Steve, ably assisted by a great character called Neville Lay who worked tirelessly with us throughout the ten years. We travelled miles to find races such as: Kings Lynn, Hyde Park, Great Baddow, Halstead, Gt. Yarmouth and Beccles, as well as all the local races. The attendance was a great credit as we relied on parents to support the events. We trained up at the High School long before the Leisure Centre was built, after consultation with the Headmaster at the time. This was very much appreciated and it went a long way to help the children, many of whom were students at the school. A lot of thanks should go to Tony Howe in supporting our club and what we were trying to achieve. We are very proud to have four of our kids who went on to be County Champions in their age groups. One went on to AAA semi-finals at Bedford - later in their teenage years. There was a real buzz around Hadleigh Juniors at the time because of those achievements. We are also very proud of later successes (even in different parts of the world for some), acknowledging the hard work and effort of all those who were involved in the scheme at the time. One particular meeting, we recall, at Colchester Harriers for an event involving Colchester, Halstead, Witham, Harwich and Hadleigh. We competed at all track distances. We won the overall event which underlined our strength and determination as a small town junior running club. It’s great to see the Hadleigh Hares Juniors thriving again. We wish Clive Pinnion and his team every success for the future. Steve Wilkinson, Colin Ablitt
Stoke by Nayland Harris Bowl Team reach the Quarter-Final Stoke by Nayland won their last match in the league to qualify for the Quarter Finals of the Harris Bowl competition- an Essex County Competition. The team knew that they needed to win this last match against Belfairs GC, at home, to progress further. Despite the pressure the team rose to the occasion and won 4-1. Although three of the matches were tight at the half way stage Catriona Chaplin, going out first, won 4/3, followed by Maria Gilgar with a resounding 8/6 victory. Lady Captain Carol Mehrer secured the win when she finished 2/1. Anne Hemmings also won 6/4. The team now waits to hear who they will play as the competition reaches the knock out stages. The Quarter- Finals will be on 7th September on a neutral course. Team: Catriona Chaplin, Carol Mehrer, Maria Gilgar, Roz Clements and Anne Hemmings.
Four Stroke Cut for Lambert Salver Winner Jan Doe faces a four stroke cut in her handicap after winning the Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver in the annual Newton Green Golf Club festival week. The 36-handicapper, who joined the club only a few months ago, came out top of the pile in a record 128-strong field in the main event of the week. She registered 41 points, leading home Chris Stebbing, who edged out third place Guy Holliday on count back. Both were both on 39 points. The two leading men have also joined Newton in recent months, with Holliday being the first pay and play Davey member to register a top three position in a golf week event. The leading junior in the salver was Suffolk age group Jonathan Lambert present the salver to Jan Doe player 12-year-old Harvey Watts, who recorded 37 points off a handicap of 18. Overall, he was fifth, having a week earlier led home the field in the Kelvin Sansum Memorial Trophy with a tally of 43 points. In addition to Jan Doe, another successful women competitor during the week was Sheila Walter, who won the Kiskadee Trophy with partner Nick Smith, and also featured in the second place team in the Delaney Scramble. This event also featured Nick Smith in the winning four. Jonathan Lambert presented the main prizes of the week at a sell-out presentation evening on Saturday. The festival broke all previous records, with 480 entries spread across seven different format competitions, and raised in excess of £1,000 for club funds.
A fine closing weekend at Bowling Club The Hadleigh bowling club brought forward its closing to allow for an early start to remedial work on the green. On Saturday 18 August we held the traditional Ladies v Gents drive in blazing sunshine and the Ladies came out winners overall. On the same afternoon the EBA Mixed Triples team played in the Monday Mixed Leagues Cup semi final against Ipswich and District B.C. at Roundwood which they won and now play in the Final at Debenham B.C. on Sunday 26 August, our congratulations to them. On Sunday 19 August we held our club finals day once again in scorching hot conditions even for the early starters at 10.00 am. The crowd gradually built up as the day progressed and enjoyed keenly fought matches. The results were as follows: Two Wood Singles Doug Doust beat Eileen Simpson Men’s Singles Peter Miller – Bye Mixed Triples Ann Frazer, Ken Linge & Dave Kemp beat Christine Woollard, Eileen Simpson & Peter Vanstone Mixed Drawn Pairs Judy Saunders & Peter Miller beat Bob Stanley & Margaret Bird Ladies Singles Sheila Larwill beat Barbara Tryon Elsie May Trophy Christine Woollard beat Margaret Clarke Open Pairs John Hynard & Pam Horley beat Peter Miller & Dave Kemp Ladies Pairs Pat Lloyd & Pam Linge beat Linda Oxford & Margaret Bird Men's Handicap Ray Clarke beat David Cooper Men’s Pairs Mick Marinou & Peter Miller beat Eric Hogger & Peter Vanstone Our congratulations to all the finalists and particularly the winners and our thanks to those who helped to make the day a success
