Whatfield Scoops Babergh's Village of the Year prize Whatfield residents can be very proud of the village they live in - after scooping the top spot in Babergh's Village of the Year competition 2014. Entrants to Babergh District Council’s competition, which had to have up to 500 residents on the electoral roll to be eligible, were told the results recently with Whatfield narrowly beating previous winners Tattingstone in to second place. The winner of this round receives the Cosford Trophy, framed certificate and £500 towards a community project. District finalists are then entered into the semi-final round, with three villages then reaching the final stage with the overall winner receiving £1,000, a plaque, a certificate and becoming Suffolk Village of the Year. Councillor Jennie Jenkins, Chairman of Babergh's Strategy Committee, said: "Whatfield thoroughly deserves the district accolade. It is a small but immensely vibrant village. "Whatfield impressed on the feeling of
community spirit and the way the school is integrated with the village, the building of a new play area and the depth of knowledge and interest of the conservation areas. "Now it's fingers crossed for the county round.” Jo Beever, Babergh and Mid Suffolk's Community Grants Officer, said: “Babergh is delighted to announce Whatfield’s success in this round of the competition “It was a close contest and left the judges with a hard decision but this village very much impressed the judges with the feeling of everyone in the community being involved here." Babergh’s judging panel was made up of four district councillors who marked villages on their community spirit, general appearance, how well its parish council is run and the special activities happening in the village. Whatfield now goes forward to the next round of the Suffolk Village of the Year competition, which was being judged at the end of July.

Rosa Simon To thank everyone individually who has offered us their love, support and prayers on the death of our beloved daughter Rosa would take up this entire issue of the HCN! Whilst we hope over the next few months to have the chance to thank all personally, please accept this big, broad 'thank you' to each and everyone of you. We could not have survived this far without the great community of Hadleigh being with us. The turnout before, during and after Rosa's funeral - especially the numbers of people following the cortege on foot and the respectful actions of Hadleigh's tradespeople - was quite the most extraordinary outpouring of love we have ever experienced. Especial thanks are due to Roy and Gill of R Gwinnell & Sons, whose utter love, kindness and professionalism made our terrible situation so much more bearable. Heartfelt thanks also to Philip Ainger and Hadleigh Town Council in their sensitivity in helping us decide upon the final resting place for Rosa. And our eternal gratitude to the Revd. David Atkins, Nigel Crisp and all our church family who ensured that everything about Rosa's funeral spoke eloquently of our little girl's inspirational character and life. The Rosa Simon Music Fund aims to buy new percussion instruments for the schools, playgroups, churches and registered child minders in the town, reflecting Rosa's love of music and dancing. Any cheques are payable to the Hadleigh United Reformed Church. Whatever biologists, sociologists, physicists and philosophers might say, the universe is founded on love and we human beings are only truly human - leave alone divine - if our lives are also founded on love. Airport & Seaport Specialists Lavenham – Local Housing Needs Survey 2014 Lavenham Parish Council has asked Sunila Osborne, Suffolk Rural Housing Enabler, of Community Action Suffolk to prepare questionnaires for a Local Housing Needs Survey for Lavenham. The last survey was carried out in 2010 and an updated response is needed as evidence to support the Lavenham Neighbourhood Plan and to inform the newly formed Lavenham Community Land Trust. It is expected that survey forms will be hand delivered to every household in the parish in early September and the Parish Council urges everyone to complete the forms, whether or not they feel they are in housing need, and take this opportunity to shape the future of Lavenham. All information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence as forms will be returned direct to Community Action Suffolk where the responses will be analysed. A summarised report, which will also be sent to each household, will be available in mid December. Jane Bellward, Clerk to Lavenham Parish Council. 01787 247041

Hadleigh’s Footpath Volunteers Our walk this month will be on Saturday 16th August. We will leave from Hadleigh Bus Station (Co-op side) at 9.50am. Everybody welcome, dogs included. Strong shoes, or preferably walking boots should be worn, as the ground is rough and wet in places. The walk is 8 miles in length, and will start at Newton Green. The route will be Assington, Little Conard, Henny, Middleton, Ballingdon, and on to Sudbury. We will return to Hadleigh by bus arriving back at 2.30pm. There are some wonderful views on this walk especially around Little Cornard, and in the River Stour Valley. This walk is definitely worth the effort. Further information regarding this walk, or any of the footpath volunteers other activities can be obtained from Hadleigh’s Footpath Warden, David Warner on 07749 732941, or email him on nottinghamvictoria@supanet.com.

Do you remember what traditional pubs were like before the big brewers turned them into steak houses and sports bars with fruit machines, pool tables and TV’s everywhere. Well this is the Horseshoes Inn, Cockfield, a Grade 2 listed building built in 1350 AD. A beautiful, newly thatched Freehouse, it has been purchased by Lloyd and Jessica. The Inn was closed when they acquired the freehold. They decided to restore the Inn to its former glory, opening up the large fireplace so it can be seen from both bars, exposed beams and a traditional tiled floor in the main bar, a new bar and and back fitting built. In the Conservatory, which was too hot in the summer and cold in the winter, they decided to put a traditional slate roof on to replace the glass, new carpets, curtains and redecorated throughout. The pub now has a real warm traditional and friendly feel, offering good home made traditional pub food and value for money. A few dishes on offer include liver and bacon, sausage and mash, fish and chips cooked in beer batter, home made selection of traditional pies and puddings, and the daily special, choice of meats on the Traditional Sunday roast. There is also a good selection of wines by the glass or bottle, good choice of Traditional beers with some changing weekly as guest ales. With a lovely outside garden area in the front of the Pub, Lloyd and Jessica are planning a children's play area at the rear of the Horseshoes Inn. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, why not pay a visit - you will not be disappointed. Bookings taken for lunch and dinner and a private function room available for those special occasions. So why not call and make that booking for you and friends, you will love the ambience of this fully restored traditional English Inn, large car park, call 01284 828177. Lloyd and Jessica will make you feel welcome, both are very experienced, having previously run their own Pub. Jess is a chef and Lloyd was a professional golfer, they have a 9 year old son called Oscar so a real family run business. So why not come and say hello, they will be pleased to see you and make you feel welcome.

Puddle Ducks Swimming lessons in your area for babies, toddlers and pre-school age children. Swimming is one of the most amazing experiences you can share with your baby or toddler! You can start swimming with us from a few weeks old up until they reach the age of 4. There are many benefits to swimming with your child, listed below are just a few: • Classes really help to build your child’s confidence around water, especially as they learn vital personal survival skills and can even help with activities at home such as hair washing! • The fun content of lessons with lots of songs and activities helps children to learn without even realising it! • Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns • As classes are based on age rather than ability, your child (and you!) will be making friends with children at a similar age • Even though gentle, baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby's heart, lungs and respiratory system • Being in the water with your child lets you share their swimming journey and learn how to practise in your own time • Encouraging children to take regular exercise helps to promote a healthy routine from an early age Our teachers adapt every activity to suit each child. Our baby-led swimming approach ensures that your child's needs are expertly fulfilled - never forcing development, but rather nurturing it to ensure a positive experience and love of swimming. Although fun is at their heart, Puddle Ducks classes are about much more than this. The classes revolve around bonding and play where children don’t realise they’re learning to swim and acquiring skills that could save their lives. The children have great fun whilst learning important discipline around water. We are now enrolling for the next term starting in September so please contact the office if you would like further details – suffolk@puddleducks.com or 01473 356222.
Come C ome on in, the water’s water’s lovely! Join our family of Puddle Ducks and pre-school enjoy baby and pr e-school swimming with the most caring and highly-trained teachers around.

‘The Three Musketeers’ are coming to Hedingham Castle and Ickworth House! This August Boxtree Productions are very excited to be bringing an open-air family musical adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic story ‘The Three Musketeers’ to two beautiful local venues. Boxtree Productions was set up this year by Boxford based couple James and Abigail Franklin; two professional actors who have been touring the world for the last 10 years. They decided to start their own theatre company to produce high quality theatre that is fun, exciting and great value for the whole family. James said: “I want to tell good stories that will engage, enthral and excite audiences whatever the venue. I also want our shows to be great value for money so we strike a good relationship with our audiences and they look forward to seeing our shows year after year.â€? The story of ‘The Three Musketeers’ concerns d’Artagnan, who leaves his home on a quest to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a musketeer. In Paris he is told that only great deeds will guarantee him a place. However, he runs into three Musketeers: Porthos, Aramis and Athos and they take d’Artagnan under their wing. When the schemes of the Cardinal Richelieu and a mysterious cloaked woman threaten to embarrass the King and Queen and throw the whole of France into war, it falls to d’Artagnan and his new found friends to save the day. But will they succeed? And will d’Artagnan ever manage to join the Musketeers? Come and join d’Artagnan and his friends in this swashbuckling, musical adventure. With action, swordfights, original songs and a little bit of romance, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy. You’ve seen the BBC television series, now come and see this live version. They will be at Hedingham Castle near Halstead on the 17th August and at Ickworth House near Bury St Edmunds on the 23rd August, both start at 6pm. ‘The Three Musketeers’ is an open-air production for everyone aged 7+ and will go ahead regardless of the weather. You are encouraged to arrive from 5pm to make the most of the beautiful surroundings and to bring a blanket or low backed chair and a picnic and soak up the atmosphere of what promises to be a magical evening of exciting open-air theatre. Tickets start from just ÂŁ10 and are available via www.boxtreeproductions.co.uk

Rusty Boxx to play at this years FolkEast Festival Rusty Boxx, a group led by siblings Ross and Ellen Ankers, have been invited to play at this years FolkEast Festival at Glemham Hall. Following the success of their debut EP, the group will be performing Friday 15th August 8-9pm. The group released their first EP, 'Scattered Keeses', with Oh Mercy Records in April and have been receiving positive reviews since, and has had several tracks played on BBC Suffolk Introducing. 'Ankers affinity for pop hooks and percussive delivery is a perfect balance to the airy harmonies. It’s a welcome change of pace and a testimony to the songwriters and musicians of Rusty Boxx' (Niji Magazine 2014). Ross says 'It's a great event to be asked to play and is the perfect way to celebrate what has been a successful year for the group, and will be a good place to play some new material!' We look forward to meeting new people and seeing familiar faces'. 'Scattered Keeses' can be downloaded from itunes or amazon

Up at the O2 Hello my readers from far and wide. I do try to take you to some exciting places and this month is no exception. Many of you have told me how much you miss hearing about the exploits of Frank and Maria. Some of my readers took things at face value and therefore Frank and Maria have been rather shy in recent months. After the shooting at Christmas, Frank and Maria are now much better and so Frank took the wheel for a journey to the O2 in London. This building has evolved from being a white elephant built for the Millenium to one of the leading popular concert venues. On one of the hottest days of the year, we arrived at the O2 in air-conditioned splendour. We were ushered to the Base Camp where our guide who was a pleasant young cherub took us through some training. I hit upon some trouble since one had to empty pockets and I did not wish to be parted from my wallet. We had to wear an O2 jacket and harness. We walked up a fairly steep and bouncy walkway carrying our safety latches and eventually reached the viewing platform centrally placed on the roof. The picture shows me with my friends Chris Dovey and Deano Ackers. So, if you find yourself in London why not give it a go! Frank loves to make sure that the kitchen gardens are all ship shape at this time of year. He has particularly been nurturing his plums. Maria will be heart broken if they drop off. And so back at my office in the High Street, we go to great lengths to seek to satisfy the expectations of our clients. Those buying property though must remember that invariably we act for the bank lending money to facilitate the purchase as well as the client who is buying. We have to confirm to the bank that the property conforms in all respects to a code of requirements laid out in The Council of Mortgage Lenders’ Handbook. We are usually able to balance the needs of buyer and lender. The Lasting Power of Attorney is straightforward in many ways but complicated in others. The Power involves four parties, those granting, those being appointed, a certificate provider and those upon whom notice is served. The final document requires to be registered at the Office of the Public Guardian. It is a document that must be entered before a client loses mental capacity but will of itself outlive mental incapacity and enable others to run the affairs of the client. Why not instruct us to prepare your Lasting Power of Attorney. Howard Gibbons

Local Art at Auction A gentleman attending a local Bonhams valuation day had a pleasant surprise last month. The group of dusty pictures which he brought along had been cleared from a deceased relative’s attic, these were entirely unremarkable until the last picture was inspected, the painting, an early watercolour by Munnings (pictured) is due to be sold in Knightsbridge in November, estimated at £8,000-12,000. This may sound like an isolated incident but there is a wealth of art waiting to be discovered locally. One of our Region’s greatest exports is Art. With a tradition stretching unbroken from the great Gainsborough and Constable, through the 19th Century with Cotman, Crome and the Norwich School artists, their Suffolk counterparts, including the Smythe brothers, Churchyard and Duvall, and into the 20th Century with high calibre artists such as Arnesby Brown, Leonard Squirrell, Mary Newcombe and Harry Becker. This is but to name a few of the scores of significant artists associated with East Anglia which amounts to arguably the richest artistic heritage of any of the U.K. regions. Further evidence of this claim is Bonhams Auctioneers’ East Anglian Paintings sale. Established 15 years ago in recognition of the wealth of artistic production in our Region; the sale has been held annually ever since and is now one of only a handful of dedicated Regional art auctions still in existence, the sale’s continued success is testament to a growing demand for East Anglian artists at auction. This year’s sale will be previewed in both Suffolk and Norfolk before previewing and selling in Bonhams’ Knightsbridge Salerooms in November. Already consigned for the auction are many significant works including a rare John Nash oil ‘View from the artist’s window, Bottengoms’ depicting his farm at Wormingford carries an estimate of £12,000-18,000, a Hackney horse portrait by Sir Alfred Munnings estimated at £20,000-30,000. Royal favourite Sir Edward Seago is represented with several works including a fine oil on panel titled ‘Norfolk landscape’ at £18,000-25,000, amongst the many fine 19th Century works a large marine oil by John Moore at £10,000-15,000 stands out. Local artists feature frequently in the auction, in particular artists from The East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Hadleigh and this year’s auction already includes a collection of paintings by Maggi Hambling, a typical Lucy Harwood landscape and sketches by the school’s figurehead Cedric Morris. Lavenham features in the sale with works by Reginald Brill who lived at the historic Little Hall. Sudbury artist Clive Madgwick is represented by his impressive ‘Venetian Grand Canal’ estimated at £1,200-1,800. Not only has our Region produced a wealth of home grown talent, artists have always been drawn here, in search of the particular light and unspoilt landscapes. Artisitic communities have flourished in pockets including Walberswick and Bardfield and artists such as Ben Nicholson, Phillip Wilson Steer, Mary Fedden, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Eric Ravilious have all worked here. Some artists simply visited, others stayed and two artists who have featured in every East Anglian picture sale since its inception 15 years ago are Sir Alfred Arnesby Brown and Archibald Campbell Mellon. Both men came from Nottingham and settled around Gorleston in the early 20th Century. Both artists are now amongst the most sought after at auction; Arnesby Brown’s majestic post-impressionist landscapes and trademark cattle; Mellon’s famous beach scenes, views taken from his studio window which overlooked the beach, often painted on the back of cigar boxes and peppered with stick figures and dogs which have earned him the title of ‘The Lowry of the South’. I would strongly encourage any fans of East Anglian Art or just fans of our East Anglian landscape to visit our sale when it previews in Bury St Edmunds, on the 6th and 7th of November. Alternatively the sale can be viewed in online from mid October at www.bonhams.com Anybody interested in consigning pictures to the sale can contact me on 01284 716190 or daniel.wright@bonhams.com to arrange an appraisal at your home or at one of our regular valuation days around the region. The East Anglian picture sale will be held in Knightsbridge on 18th November and closes for entries on 30th September. Daniel Wright, Bonhams

Hadleigh Chamber Summer Garden Party 10th August 2014 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm Last year's new look to the annual social gathering was a tremendous success. So this year is more of the same but with a twist. Priory Hall, Benton Street for a traditional garden party with cream tea and cakes, music and games but this year we are celebrating James Walter and his over 40 years voluntary work for the Chamber as he moves into (semi we hope) retirement. James has been working hard for a number of other charities over the years and so we will be inviting them to join in as well. This is an almost family friendly event, though not for children under 10 as the grounds at Priory Hall are not child friendly (there’s lots of water). You can park on site athough Priory Hall is in easy walking distance from the town centre if the Pimms is a bit too appealing! You'll be able to wander around the grounds which include orchards, knot garden, walled terrace and rose arbour and enjoy the relaxed ambience of this country house. (And if it rains we'll party in the Tudor Hall instead.) The garden party will start at 3pm and finish at 6pm and cost £10 a ticket. Please download (see below) and complete the booking form here and send in to Tony Addison. We need to be able to firm up on numbers for the caterers (Angel Delights) a good few days in advance and make sure we have enough Pimms, wine, beer, soft drinks. Any questions please email or call either Tony 01473 810002 tony.addison@free-rein.net or Cyndy Hilton 01473 823185 cyndy.hilton@prioryhall.com. Entry will be by ticket only so please get your order in, this is always a popular event! Download the booking form from www.hadleighchamber.co.uk/party

Volunteer and support your local Hospice Could you give up some of your time to help and support local Hospice care for local people? St Elizabeth Hospice has over 1,100 volunteers and the local charity is always looking for more people to join their team of dedicated volunteers. There are a variety of volunteer roles across the Hospice; you could help by working in your local Hospice shop, manning our reception desk, helping in our Inpatient Unit, helping the catering team, driving, hairdressing, co-ordinating creative activities in Day Care, or helping at an event. Whether you can spare an hour or two a week or month, or a morning or afternoon here or there, St Elizabeth Hospice would love to hear from you. Claire Lansley, St Elizabeth Hospice’s Volunteer Services Co-ordinator, said: “All our volunteers play a vital part in the work of the Hospice. By donating their precious time and skills, they saved us an incredible £1.1million in the last year, and between them, contribute more than 2,000 hours of work a week. “We welcome individuals as well as groups who wish to donate their time and skills, and volunteering also offers opportunities for you, it’s a great chance to meet new people and make new friends, to increase confidence and people skills, it adds balance and variety to your CV and it’s a worthwhile and rewarding role to take on.” Paul Seymour, of Ipswich, was looking for a meaningful challenge after retiring from the Royal Air Force and volunteering at the Hospice was a perfect fit for him. He said: “I applied for a role as a receptionist; however once I started I found myself getting involved in other projects around the Hospice. I now coordinate the volunteer drivers’ rota, organising around 20 drivers who transport 100 patients a week.” To find out more about volunteering or to see the full list of volunteer vacancies, visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/volunteer or call 01473 707016 or email volunteer@stelizabethhospice.org.uk

Whatfield School have been celebrating the arrival of summer with a lot of fantastic activities leading to the long holiday. As readers may know, we are a very small school less than 2 miles from Hadleigh, and are known for providing a ‘wide range of stimulating activities’. At the beginning of July parents were treated to a performance of ‘The Peace Child’ by Key Stage Two children. This story was all about resolving differences and getting along with each other, and had an African flavour to follow our topic work on Africa. Parents and friends in the community were treated to a display of drumming and African dance. Many were moved to tears, as it is lovely to see how the small school environment has helped some children develop in confidence and show their ability to perform in front of an audience. We were so pleased to manage to regain our Philippino hut this term. Last winter, in the dreadful storms, we lost the hut which had stood on our field for the last five years. We found it had blown into the surrounding trees, and was too broken to mend or use, so had to be taken down. We have finally managed to replace it, and I am pleased to include a photo of some of our children with Mrs Cross. Mrs Cross is a great friend to the school, and was the person who completed all the paperwork to allow us to get a grant from the Arts council for the hut. She was the officially the first grown up to sit in it again. Many of our children have enjoyed a wide range of sporting success this year, but whatever our abilities, we all celebrated sport with our annual ‘Sportsweek’ at the end of July. During the week local coaches and sports clubs led sessions for the children. They enjoyed a huge range of sports from tennis, athletics, gymnastics, trampolining, bowls, dancing, tchoukball and archery, to horseriding and circus skills. A fantastic week was had by all as you can see from some of the photos. If you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school, you are always welcome. Please telephone 01473 823 309 to make an appointment. Lynne Golding, Headteacher
Pause For Thought How I wish I was a bit more organised and would stop leaving things until the last minute. This pause for thought has to be in tomorrow and I've just ordered some things on line that I need in a few days that I could have ordered weeks ago. So last minute. I know some very organised people who don't leave anything to the last minute and plan well ahead. Did you know that God has plans and is organised? When He created the world He did it in an orderly way, He gave precise instructions to Noah on how to build the ark and He has plans for us. In the Bible He says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29 verse 11. What are His plans for you and your life? To find out get to know God, pray, read the Bible, go to Church. Have a relationship with God and follow His plans for your life. Lydia Ball

Podiatry/Chiropody Service available at Hadleigh Physiotherapy Will & Charlotte Dykes are excited to welcome Mark Smith and Laura StantonDavis to the growing team at Hadleigh Physiotherapy. The practice will now be offering general podiatry care as well as detailed biomechanical assessments, looking at the function of the foot and associated structures and how it affects the way you walk and run. Podiatry can be used closely with Physiotherapy to help maximise the efficiency of patient’s function, by combining specific exercises, footwear advice and where indicated insoles or orthoses. What is Podiatry/Chiropody? Podiatrists/Chiropodists are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat conditions or injuries which affect the lower limb, ankle or foot. Problems that can be treated range from simple nail and skin conditions through to complex muscle, tendon, and joint injuries. Podiatrists are trained in all aspects of foot and lower limb care but many choose to specialise in particular areas such as: - General Podiatric Care which covers conditions such as callous (hard and thickened skin), corns, verrucae’s and nail care. - Biomechanics which looks at the mechanical function of the foot and associated structures and includes assessment of how you walk and run, known as gait analysis. Introducing the Podiatry team. Laura Stanton-Davis has worked as a Specialist Community Podiatrist for the NHS for the past 10 years. She has worked in open access triage clinics and has managed high risk caseloads alongside routine foot care. Laura is able to assess, advise and treat a range of foot problems such as, callous (hard and thickened skin), corns, in-growing toenails, fungal nail infections, verrucae’s and basic nail care/cutting. Mark Smith has worked as a Biomechanical and Musculoskeletal Podiatrist for the past 11 years. He was a clinical lead in the NHS for 10 years to both adult and children services, and in 2012 completed his MSc in Clinical Podiatric Biomechanics. For the past year he has been employed by the MoD and works as the regional Podiatrist to East Anglia, and the South East. Mark can assess for a range of lower limb injuries, sports injuries and problems associated with biomechanics and gait (walking), including toe pain, heel pain, arch pain, Plantar Fasciitis, Metatarsalgia, Mortons Neuroma, Achilles tendon pain, ankle pain, shin pain, knee pain and some low back pain. Treatments may include footwear advice, exercise and stretching programs, gait and running education, and if required insoles/orthoses. Mark and Laura are both members of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (MChS) and are also both registered to the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). For further information, or to book an appointment please call Hadleigh Physiotherapy on 07599 959997 or email us at enquiries@hadleighphysio.co.uk
Take on the Suffolk Cycle Challenge in support of St Elizabeth Hospice St Elizabeth Hospice supporters are climbing into the saddle for a cycle ride through the idyllic Suffolk countryside on Sunday 31st August. Starting and finishing at Framlingham College, the event features a choice of two main routes: one is 40 miles, the other a more challenging 80. There is also a short route of 6-7 miles which the whole family can enjoy together. Joanne Rodger, Events and Challenges Fundraiser at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “This event is suitable for cyclists of all abilities, from families riding with their children to seasoned riders taking on long distance routes. Suffolk has some beautiful scenery for the riders to enjoy along their way, and we hope that the Suffolk Cycle Challenge will raise thousands of pounds for local Hospice care.” Cyclists are asked to raise sponsorship, and all proceeds raised will help the Hospice, an independent charity which costs £9.1 million a year to run, and relies on fundraising events, individual donations and income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs. Entry for the 40 or 80 mile rides is £30; riders must be aged 13 or older, and all riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The family route is just £10, with those under 16 riding for free. The route will feature refreshment stops to give riders a chance to refill their water bottles and buy food and drink. St Elizabeth Hospice improves life for people living with a progressive illness in East Suffolk and South Norfolk. Last year it cared for over 2,000 people and 2014 is its 25th Anniversary year. www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

Preparations are well under way for the 8th Museum of East Anglian Life Steam and Crafts Weekend to be held on the 9th and 10th August 2014. Visitors will be able to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the machines of yesteryear, as well as checking out a range of crafts and skills, many of which are experiencing a revival at the present time. The Museum’s 80 acre site will be buzzing with working machinery, demonstrations and plenty of live action, as well as all the usual displays, exhibits, historic buildings and our current temporary exhibition “Everybody’s Darling: the First World War Nurse. Lisa Harris, Curator at the Museum of East Anglian Life, says: "Without the commitment of a range of individuals and museums, both machines and skills that have been so key to rural life in the past would already have been lost. With less than a month to go until the beginning of the event, the plans and preparations are really starting to take shape and excitement is certainly growing". During the weekend, the Museum will also host its 12th Steam Engine Driver Training Event. This special opportunity teaches students the basics of engine ownership, maintenance and use, whilst encouraging them to work alongside experienced local steam engine owners. Visitors will be able to talk with our demonstrators, have a go at some of the crafts, as well as checking out the range of attractions that the Museum has to offer. There will even be a chance to make your own poster on the Museum’s original 1870 Colombia printing press. The summer term is such a busy and exciting time for riders and helpers at The Shelley Centre, a time when riders have the opportunity to show, at special events, all they have learned. At a pony day on June 9th and The Shelly Show on June 29th, many were able to meet and compete with riders from our different groups. At the Pony Day nine young riders with fifteen helpers enjoyed a full day experiencing some of the stable and horse care tasks which time precludes in the weekly riding sessions. The day began with stable bedding being put down water buckets filled before the ponies were brought in from the fields, they were then groomed and tacked up for their riders to practice their dressage skills in preparation for The Shelley Show on June 29th. Cleaning tack and a short horse related quiz filled a short rain gap before a delicious B-B-Q lunch. In the afternoon all enjoyed a long hack around the fields and woods behind the Centre. The ponies were then sponged down before being taken out to the fields for the night and a welcome feed. Drinks and cake were much enjoyed by all participents. Each rider received a certificate and a rosette, this concluded a day full of fun and valuable experiences. Twenty four of our riders from different groups competed in The Shelly Show, all looked very smart as they eagerly awaited the competitions they had learnt and practiced in their weekly rides. Dressage Tests and the Countryside Challenge were held in the arena. Here riders negotiated a course with obstacles needing control of their ponies whilst completing many tasks calling for dexterity and balance. Awards for Special achievement in riding were gained by seniors, juniors and on Ebony, our amazing mechanical horse, which helps progress many riders to be able to eventually ride the ponies. Prizes were given for turnout and the biggest smile which must have been hard to choose with so many happy riders. For many to compete individually enhances the confidence and pride in achievement for riders, families and helpers. The progress we see in our riders is always so heart warming. s in previous years, we are pleased to welcome a number of makers of bowed, stringed and keyboard instruments to exhibit their craftsmanship at the concerts at Stoke by Nayland Church. This provides a rare chance for the audience to have hands-on experience of playing the instruments and talking to the makers.

Heading to Success At the start of 2014, the Year 10 pupils were given the opportunity to apply for the role of a prefect. The pupils were given a green log book which they had to fill in – the more signatures the higher the chance of getting the role. The roles were Pastoral, Community, Science, Humanities, MFL, Maths and IT, English and Drama and Music. When the Prefect Leaders were chosen, they were given the opportunity to have an interview with the Headteacher (Mrs Gibson). On the 7th July, the Year 10 Prefects, Prefect Leaders and Head Pupils underwent a prefect training day. The training ranged from team building exercises to considering the attributes of a perfect prefect. As the day unravelled, the pupils gained more confidence in their role and their duties were defined. Recently the new Head girls and boys were chosen by Mrs Gibson and the Head of Year, Mrs Palmer, and we would like to congratulate Harry Plank, Harry Kemp, Lois Peck and Ellen Seeley who deservingly earned these roles. Head girl, Ellen Seeley, told us; “I am really looking forward to helping with school activities and encouraging different people. I was very shocked when I got the role and it hasn’t really sunk in yet!” Picking the Junior Prefects This year also introduced opportunities for year 9’s such as: House and Sport prefects. These roles required skills from the students such as responsibility, meeting deadlines, team work and dedication. To find the prefects, the large number of applicants had to be interviewed by Mrs Calvino. We spoke to one of the junior house prefects, Emily Smith; “It’s helped us get to know the younger years in our house and has also encouraged us to take responsibly within the school community.” Junior sports prefects, Andrew Halls and Elske Kelly, also said; “It has given me opportunities to improve my sports leadership.” “I have enjoyed being a Sports Prefect because it has helped me to be more confident. I have appreciated helping younger students improve their sport and umpiring their matches. I also believe it will help me in the future with colleges as it shows leadership, organization and commitment.” The Fate of the Fete The fete which took place on Saturday 5th July was undoubtedly a success. Despite the fact that the weather was dismal, the fete being held inside was a greater success than being outside according to Mrs Calvino. The Year 10s dedication and planning which started back in February finally paid off as they managed to raise an amount to be proud of for the house charities, all of whom were exuberant about the donations. Pupils of all ages were involved. Kieran, a Year 7 pupil who helped to run the Mucky dip (a lucky dip with a nasty surprise!) stated: “The fete went well and that the stall I ran raised lots of money for the school’s house charities.” Another pupil – Morgan Geller, voiced: “The fete turned out so much better than I expected: the music was fantastic as well as the spirit of the community.” Well done to everyone involved!
The Year 10 students were very friendly and cooperative which also made the Year 5 and 6 students feel at home. Daniel Carrigan (Year 6) took part in these activities. He said: “We had 4-5 different tasks on varied aspects of writing. My favourite part was when we had to write a poem about an object and how it smelt, felt, looked like and what feelings it had. The day helped with my confidence with speaking in front of people and I enjoyed the day overall.” Morgan Geller (Year 10) who helped led the activities, stated: “It was a very relaxed environment and everyone participated really well. Overall the day was very successful.” Enrichment was a historical success Between the 23rd to 27th June, the school hosted their annual Enrichment Week. This year the week was held with a distinct Middle-Ages theme, with activities based on medieval times, with medieval food, games, crafting and more. The pupils were divided into 5 large groups, all significant historical groups from the medieval period which were: The Plantagenets, The Lancastrians, The Yorkists, The Normans and The Tudors. Each group had their own activities and tasks themed on their historical group and this included designing T-shirts which represented what their group was about, with many creative designs being produced by the end of the day. During the week, the pupils experienced other activities involving visitors coming to the school. These included a professional fencer teaching one group the ways of fencing, which they compiled into a creative presentation at the end of the week. One pupil was unable to participate in the week’s activities due to an injury, however, he certainly was not left out, as he created a detailed book titled ‘Dooms Day Book.’ This book included images of the day-to-day happenings of the groups, as well as details on the historical aspect of the week. He says that the project helped him become more independent, and he thoroughly enjoyed creating it during the whole week. Students were in awe when some birds of prey visited the school, as they viewed them from up close and personal. These included a Peregrine Falcon among others. They learned all about their habitat, origin, what species of bird they were and more. Pupils even got the chance to see a baby owl at the end of the visit! The pupil’s main task was to create a presentation for the end of the week, with the goal of the presentation being to show how their group put the ‘Great’ in Great Britain. There were many highly creative designs, all being of very high quality of work. Some of the presentations included a short play by part of the Yorkist group, which went so well it had some of the staff in tears! Some of the other presentations included an authentic medieval market stall, and a giant medieval banquet. The staff all agreed it was a fantastic week, with everyone getting involved in some form. The staff say that the students learnt valuable teamwork skills, as well as communication skills that will be extremely useful in their later lives. Ardèche From 19th to 27th June, a group of Year 9 students went to the Ardèche. It was a great opportunity to go to a different country and try new activities such as wind surfing, banana boats and kayaking, only to name a few. The pupils went to 2 different PGL sites to try the activities as well as visiting Mimosa first where they did water activities in the Mediterranean Sea. They then moved sites to Segres to get prepared for their 2-day Ardèche river descent. For the last 2 days of their trip, they went canoeing on the Ardèche River before they got back on the coach to return home. They arrived back to school with lots of anticipation as they were eager to tell their adventure to their parents.
The Clouds Will Part for the Stars of the Summer Concert On 22nd July, the Hadleigh High School Concert was held in the Sports Hall, where a variety of students performed their many talents. This consisted of a range of musical performances, dances and performing art pieces – this shows the range of talent in our school. As usual, the students that performed impressed everybody in the room, which led to amazing feedback from parents, family members and other members of the audience. Students thanked Miss Macey, Mr Hellewell and other staff for organising another excellent Summer Concert. Students look forward to the Concert every year. We can tell this through the enthusiasm from the students and the preparation that the acts put into their performances. From Year 9, Jess Simmons stated: “I practise roughly 8-9 hours per week, preparing my own compositions.” This shows the pupil’s dedication towards the Summer Concert. Head Boy and Girl: Harry Planck and Lois Peck also commented: “We always look forward to the concert as it is a brilliant way for the students to show off their talents. As head boy and girl, we hosted the concert. Writing the script was challenging, yet fun and exciting. We cannot wait to introduce the next concert at Christmas.” Overall, our school is teeming with students who are willing to take on the responsibility of practising and participating in this annual Summer Concert.
Mersea Island 2014 (written by Grace Watkins 7O) In June, 113 pupils and 13 teachers travelled to Mersea Island. Having arrived we set up camp before taking part in numerous fun activities! These activities included climbing, high-ropes, caving, mountain biking etc… All of camp was amazing- there was something for everyone. I especially enjoyed (This aerial shot was kindly taken by Mr the high-ropes and caving! I also Debenham, Year 7 parent) enjoyed our time on the beach. Every instructor was friendly, encouraging and fun. Going for the week was brilliant! The tents were massive, in our tent there were 8 of us and we still had a lot of room for all our luggage. Overall, camp was fantastic. We lived with our friends, learning things about one another and ourselves every day! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity as we would never be able to do those activities with all of our friends again. Camping at Mersea Island was brilliant, I would definitely go again!
Imaginations Run Wild On Friday the 4th July, a selection of Year 10 participated in a Creative Writing Workshop with Mrs Dawson in the library. The Pupils that contributed to the workshop were: Morgan Geller, Amarlia Thomson, Daniel Holloway, Jonah Beadle, Ellen Seeley, Clara McElroy, Fraser May, Boris Takam, Chloe Read, Georgie King, Olivia Sherred, Tom Luck and Emily Partridge. On Tuesday the 8th July, a few Year 5 and Year 6 students were selected from various schools and took part in the same workshop that our Year 10 did on Friday – only this time the Year 10 students led the activities. In the Library, a selection of refreshments, such as biscuits and drinks, were available to the children to make them feel comfortable and welcome.
Sport-tacular Time! On Tuesday 8th/Wednesday 9th July, Sports Day took place and the rivalry between the houses shone through. Each form competed for the terrific sports day trophy and only one house can win! Who will it be? On Tuesday, some of the track events and all of the field events happened and on Wednesday, the other half of the track events happened as well as tug of war between the staff members. Music was played and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The Perfect Prom On the 11 of July, 148 year 11 students attended a night of high school memories: the Prom. All the ladies look absolutely stunning and the boys looked handsome and dashing as well. We spoke to Miss Clarke, who has been organising the memorable night: “It was awesome and amazing. The whole place was decorated beautifully. It was a great night for every one!” We hope that everyone enjoyed the night!

Saint Omer 2014 It took around 35 minutes to cross under the Channel and at one point someone was convinced they saw a fish through the window! When we arrived in Calais it was lunch time, so we stopped at a picnic site and ate our sandwiches. We then went into the shop on the site and some of us brought sweets to keep us going for the rest of the journey! We were even able to see the White Cliffs of Dover from where we were sitting! Just before we arrived at our accommodation in Saint Omer, we visited a little 'Boulangerie' or bakery, and had a tour and a talk about how the bakery was run and how to make the perfect, authentic French bread! Just before we left, we all got to try fresh Pain Au Chocolat. What a yummy treat! After our brief visit to the bakery, we continued our journey onto the Chateau D'Eblingham in Saint Omer, where we're swiftly unpacked our bags and went and had dinner that consisted of 'jambon avec pommes de terre et petit pois' and for dessert we had a choice of watermelon, doughnuts or apple pie. We then had a quick turnaround so we could attend the Menin Gate Ceremony in Belgium. The Menin Gate is a memorial that commemorates all the soldiers that were known to have gone into the First World War but their bodies were not recovered. Written on the walls of the monuments are over 50,000 names of men who never returned home. Day two started with a visit to the British cemetery, Tyne Cot, where there are 11,400 head stones and over 33,000 names on the walls. It was really interesting to see how well kept all the graves stones were and how pristine and polished the whole cemetery was kept. On our visit there, we saw one man's grave that has a Victoria Cross engraved onto the white head stone. The Victoria Cross was awarded to him for extreme bravery when he and 4 other soldiers managed to take over one of the German Bunkers on the site where the cemetery is now. We proceeded onto Langemark cemetery mainly for German troops. In the middle of the cemetery there is a mass grave that holds over 27,000 German soldiers killed in the war. It was interesting to see that all the graves were shaded by oak trees and were coloured black. This made the atmosphere solemn. On the final day we did a town trail in Boulogne. Although it was really challenging as all the questions were in French, we still had great fun doing it! Overall the trip was really enjoyable and we all learnt something new. (We would like to thank all the teachers and staff, and of course Dave the bus driver for making the trip possible, but most of all fun!)

This recipe is dedicated to Rosa Simon, whose love of colour reminds me of rainbows.
Recipe for Success
Rosa’s Rainbow Salad There is no recipe for this dish, not because I am being lazy, but because it is simply an by Sarah Thompson excuse to have some artistic fun and create a colourful dish for the summer. Select the quantities to suit the occasion. I tried this out with my Friday afternoon cooking class and all credit to them, the results were stunning. Fruit Salad Any combination of the following that make up the colours of the rainbow. Plums, strawberries, raspberries, grapefruit, blueberries, oranges, nectarines, peaches, melon (any variety), grapes, kiwi fruit etc. With the next salad, rather than simply cutting up the vegetables, experiment with different ways of presenting a colourful line of the rainbow, for example julienne strips, grating, batons, dicing, etc. Choose from the following suggestions, or find your own, but remember that there is no naturally occurring blue vegetable, so use blueberries if you need to, or put blue food colouring on a cucumber, which is what my students did. Vegetable Salad As with the fruit salad, select the colours that make up the rainbow and choose quantities to suit. Aubergines, courgettes, carrots, tomatoes, peppers (the more colours the better!) beetroot, cucumber, radishes, lettuce, etc. Don’t forget to BASIL (Buy And Source It Locally) Hadleigh’s Friday vegetable stall sold me this wonderful array of fruit and vegetables so please remember to BASIL (Buy And Source It Locally) and don’t forget the beauty in a rainbow.

Greenscape Energy Ltd – Solar Panels in Hadleigh and the surrounding area Solar panels are continuing to be a popular investment for many people looking to reduce their energy bills, not only do solar panels help reduce these bills but under current government incentives they also generate an income. Anyone thinking of investing in a solar panel system should consider the following tips to help ensure they are getting a good deal; • Always make sure that at least 2 quotes are obtained from reputable Solar installers. • Research using the internet the products the installer is using. • Insist on being given details of other local people that the company has installed a Solar system for, as any good company will have nothing to hide and will happily let a potential customer speak to existing customers. • Do not let yourself be pressured into ‘sign on the day’ tactics of salespersons, take your time to consider and compare the quotes you have been given. Researching the installation company is also key in ensuring a good deal. Here at Greenscape Energy we pride ourselves on our quality of work, choice of top quality products and excellent customer relations. Sadly not all companies seem to be taking such an honest approach to the way they work; Have you or anyone you know recently found yourself receiving several phone calls offering you ‘free Solar panels’? We are speaking to many people at the moment who are receiving such calls, often several times a week, and who rightfully think that there is something amiss with the offers being made to them. In most cases, it would appear that people are being offered ‘free’ Solar installations, and are being advised that the Government has ‘teamed up’ with one or more of the main UK high street banks. The people who have investigated this offer further are often told that a ‘Government Surveyor’ can visit their property to ascertain the feasibility of their home for a free Solar installation. What appears to be happening is that a Salesperson from one of many companies who are currently operating in this way then visits the home. The potential customer is told that there is a ‘better than free’ offer available, where the money paid back to them by the Feed-in Tariff combined with the savings on their bills will cover the monthly cost of the Solar installation. In this way, the system will pay for itself in 10 years, and the customer will not have to part
company with any of their own money. The remaining 10 years of the Feed-in Tariff payments are then 100% profit for the customer. What customers are not being informed of, is firstly that there will be an outlay of their own money, and that what they are actually signing up to is a 10 year finance plan with a major high street bank, in order to pay for their Solar installation. Often these companies quote inflated prices, do not explain thoroughly that the interest on the finance is nearly 10%, and will do all of this during an appointment that pressures the customer to sign the contract on the day, without giving the customer the chance to get alternative quotes or to do sufficient research. All of this is a complete contravention of the RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) regulations for dealing with potential customers within the Solar industry. We would urge anyone who has had any dealings with a company operating in this way to not put pen to paper during the initial appointment. Many of these high-pressure companies will make offers that ‘are only available if you sign today’, or ‘you are bulk-buying with other local people and you get a special discount’. All of these claims need to be verified and investigated before signing a contract. Quite simply, they are old-fashioned pressure-selling tactics, designed to get the customer to purchase a system without speaking to any other companies. Do a thorough research into the technology that is being offered, and also the company quoting for them and their background, before making any final decision. Fortunately, any company in the Solar industry is legally obliged to give a customer a 14 day ‘cooling off period’. Many people who have experienced companies operating in this manner have cancelled their contracts the following day, as they rightly noticed that by paying 10% interest on a bank loan to pay for a Solar installation, the benefits of the Feed-in Tariff are almost completely wiped out. Before signing anything, potential customers should ask themselves “why would I pay 10% interest to borrow money from a high street bank, when I can take out a personal loan at only 5%, or even extend my mortgage for around 4%?” At Greenscape Energy, we are actually offering interest-free-credit on installations with one of our top Solar panels. Once again, a potential customer should ask themselves “why would I sign up to an offer that requires me to pay 10% interest, when I can actually pay 0% interest with a reputable local company?” If you or anyone you know has been made offers like these, and seek some clarification on what is being offered, or for more information about Solar in general, please get in touch and our friendly team will be more than happy to help.

What’s in a name? By ex-punk rocker Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church It has been remarked on more than one occasion just how long my surname is. Although it’s not my own doing, I often feel the need to apologise all the same. However, I am not the only one with a lengthy moniker. Singer and ex-X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has got married again and chosen to take the name of her husband, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. Not unreasonable I thought, but it appears to have generated column inches in the press. One commentator went so far to call it “sexist and medieval” and criticised the need for having ‘a shared identity’. But surely some people just want to make a fresh start, especially if their last relationship was far from happy. Name changes matter; they are often a sign of being ready to move on and be someone else. In 1922 there was a young man called Eric Blair who had no idea what to do with his life. So he followed in his father’s footsteps and served as a subdivisional officer in Burma. He hated every single minute of it and finally resigned. He returned to England five years later at the age of 24. Without ambition and direction Eric shut himself away in his bedroom for a year before emerging and declaring that he wanted to be a writer. Today we know him as George Orwell. His emergence was as dramatic as the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. From the floundering youngster he became the lively and prophetic writer. In his time he wrote of the injustices of street life in London, fought in the Spanish civil war and criticised the rise of Stalinism in new Communist Russia. So what happened in that bedroom in that year in 1927 to transform Eric Blair into George Orwell? Orwell tells that he read Charles Dickens and became immersed in these stories. As a result, he developed a passion for the poor and downtrodden in life. He wrote: “Reading Dickens I see the face of a man who is always fighting against something, but who fights in the open and is not frightened, the face of a man that is generously angry.” There are many other stories, too, of people changing their names. Not least in the Bible. One was a young Jewish fisherman called Simon. His life wasn’t bad, but an encounter with an extraordinary rabbi called Jesus changed his life forever. ‘Simon’ simply means ‘hearing’, but Jesus renamed him ‘Peter’, meaning “Rock”. He went so far as to say that he would build his church on this ‘rock’. Quite something. Today he is also attributed to becoming the first pope. Psychological research published in New Scientist (1994) argued that names affect our identity. Evidence pointed to the influence names have over career paths. It is, perhaps, why in Eastern culture the choosing of names has always been so important. It undoubtedly had an effect on Simon Peter. After all, he went from being Simon the disciple to Peter the apostle. Furthermore, the Bible says there is power in the name of Jesus. Read into that what you will. Stour Valley Vineyard is a growing family church. We usually meet Sunday mornings at 10.30am in the Delphi Centre. However, in August we are taking a summer break. Rugby Club Beer Festival The beer festival was a great success again this year. The weather could have been kinder on Saturday but despite this we still sold out of cider and had only a small amount of Ale left. It was great to see our regulars back but also there were a lot of people coming for the first time and we hope you all enjoyed the day. We would like to thanks the bands who played. Paul G and the Retros kept us entertained on Friday night and proved as always very popular. On Saturday the music started at 3 pm local bands Nuclear Winter, Zoe and James from Zoe & the Pulse and Harry Planck all performed. It’s fantastic to have such talented youngsters playing and everyone were very complementary on their music. These guys will now be able to add to their CV’s that they were the warm up acts for the one and only Elvis. Who between getting back from Vegas and jetting off to a nursing home at Fingringhoe for a gig managed to squeeze in another legendary performance. The main band for the evening were “Without Motif”, they certainly lived up to their reputation and were very good, getting lots of people dancing. We would like to thank everyone who attended, all the helpers, the bands for making this a great day and we will see you all again next year on the 3rd & 4th July 2015 Hadleigh RFC Committee.

Already an AA 4 star hotel, the family-owned venue has also now been upgraded by Visit England to 4 star Silver status. SKy Watch Meteor Showers August is the month that sky watchers are treated to a celestial fireworks display and it goes by the name of the Perseid Meteor shower. The shower runs from July 23rd until August 20th each year and for those who want to wish upon a falling star this shower offers you a large amount of wishes! The diagram shows you where to look for the meteors. If you face in a north easterly direction and look up you will quickly be able to recognise the W shaped constellation called Casslopeia scan your eyes down just a bit and you will see a red star named Algol, which is in the constellation of Perseus also known as the Demon star due to its red colour this is the area to concentrate your search efforts. It wont be long before you will see the meteors race through the Sky as soon as dusk falls you will see activity and the beauty is you only need your eyes no fancy equipment at all. Maybe this would cap off an evening bbq? But what causes a Meteor shower? We covered Comets last month and they are the very source of the showers. As a Comet passes through space, the dust tail leaves behind particles some as fine as cigarette smoke some the size of grains of sand the bigger remnants being tennis ball sized. These particles expand around the orbit of the Comet and each year the Earth traverses through a roughly cylindrical group of these particles called Meteoroids at this point the Meteoroids meet the Earth head-on and then plunge through the atmosphere being burned up by friction causing the incandescent glow we see as Meteors. And they are fast moving too! These tiny particles glow very brightly you cannot miss them and on the night of August 13th they reach their peak in numbers to be seen. On this night one can expect to see 60 Meteors an hour and this is fairly consistent as my log from 2013 gives 200 Meteors in a 4hr period. This is the date the Earth enters the densest part of the stream causing the increased activity. The Earth meets this stream head-on because of the inclination of the parental body a Comet named Swift-Tuttle which has an orbit inclined at 113.45 degrees to the ecliptic. An object with a inclination of between 0 degrees and 90 degrees orbits the sun in a prograde motion (anti-clockwise) as the Planets do which would mean we would catch the stream up each year and the Meteors would be slower moving as our orbital speeds would be much alike, and thus cancel each other out so to speak, but an object with a 90+ degree orbital inclination has toppled over the perpendicular and moves in a retrograde motion (clockwise) which is the opposite direction to the Earth, this means we meet debris head-on. This creates faster Meteors which in turn means even the smallest particles are subjected to more atmosphere friction which thus ensures a great display year in - year out. The speeds are truly amazing we hit the stream the Meteoroids hit our atmosphere at 58 KM per second! That would equal 129.600 M.P.H or put another way, if a plane could travel at this speed it could very nearly circle the Earth 11 times in a hour these Meteors shift! So if you are out in August as dusk falls take a look up to the sky and you can wish upon a shooting star, the difference is you now know what you are looking at. I would just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all your kind comments and support for this article that you have given me, it means a lot. Also I would like to ask if anyone out there would like to form a astronomy club where members could meet up once a month and talk all things celestial? Any thoughts and comments on this will be greatly received. And finally, I cannot go this month without wishing my beautiful daughter Keiralouise a very happy birthday for 20th August. As always please contact me about ideas/questions etc at my email below. Until next month (September already!?!) clear skies and eyes up ! Neil Norman neilnorman-72@hotmail.co.uk

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 There was a flurry of activity at SESAW last month, culminating (big word for a little dog!) in our Fete and Fun Dog Show on 27th July. As usual all the volunteers worked hard sprucing up the Sanctuary, ready to welcome the visitors. But however important the event, the animals always come first and Mum didn’t get much sleep for a few weeks. It started with a poor sick hedgehog that could not be saved due to a horrible case of flystrike. Next came a family of ducklings, two baby swifts and a tiny blue tit. My canine pals and I couldn’t believe how much noise the hungry birds made as their bright yellow mouths opened wide. We just got used to that when three more hedgehogs arrived, having been found in full sun during the day. On a sadder note, a young deer was found lying in agony on the Wissington road with a broken back and had to be put to sleep. As the kind Samaritan picked up the tiny, terrified, creature the poor mother was crying for her baby on the other side of the hedge. If you can help a creature in distress, please stop and do so or at least make a phone call to get help. I must say a big thank you to the kind lady who left the knitted cat blankets at the gate and to Anthea’s Mum who makes cat and dog bed for us. We all appreciate the lovely food and treats that you leave in the supermarket collection bins too. SESAW depends upon your kindness and generosity and you never disappoint. August may be holiday time but it’s back to work for everyone at SESAW. Next month I’ll tell you about the Fete, how much was raised and the animals that were homed. Meanwhile a supporter has just delivered some doggy presents so I’m off to see what is there for me Kenny ‘the Boss’ Chihuahua
Lavenham Community Land Trust
For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish
The Neighbourhood Plan for Lavenham has clearly identified a need for affordable housing to allow local people to work and live locally. A Community Land Trust for Lavenham (LCLT) is being created to safeguard a pool of housing, designed and build in a sympathetic way, in consultation with the local community, which will be kept by Lavenham CLT in perpetuity for the use of local people. At this stage the Trust is seeking ‘expressions of interest’ from landowners who would consider selling land for new development such as housing, workspaces, or community facilities in the parish. To be considered the land should be well related to key services and facilities in the town, available on a freehold basis and generally suitable for development and should meet the financial criteria of the CLT. Expressions of interest should be sent to CLT East at the address below, who are managing the site selection process on behalf of Lavenham CLT, in partnership with the Parish and District Councils. An initial short-list of possible development options will be drawn up between now and the end of August 2014 and the local community will be kept informed. Hadleigh & District Garden Club The Club meeting for July was a "Garden Safari", which, thankfully, was on a beautiful, warm and sunny evening after several days of torrential storms. Phew, lucky or what! It is with sincere thanks to the gallant folk who have allowed us to scrutinise every inch of their wonderful gardens which, despite the above, were in immaculate order, ta ever so John & Julia, Jenny J., Carole & Derek, John & Gloria, and Kate and Ray. To Carole, a special thank you for the delicious snacks. Many congratulations to all of you who have managed to keep your gardens in good order during what can only be described as a "difficult" year. Yes we all know that few years can be perfect but this one has been a pig in many ways. Mild winter brought things forward and failed to kill off the bugs, too much rain, not enough rain, and searing winds. Enough of those for me to have all my ridge tiles re-seated not to mention the ones that blew right off!! Jolly glad my garden wasn't on show! Our next meeting is the August visit to Barnsdale after which it is the start of the new season with a talk by Thompson and Morgan and a competition for three tomatoes on a plate, and don't forget, cherry tomatoes count for less marks, however perfect! French’s Care Haven We recently had a wonderful evening at our Summer Ball, held at the Cameo Hotel, Copdock. Superbly organised by Jann, with the help of Jane and Jo, the guests danced the night away to live music provided by ‘Talk of the Town’ and disco by Bradley Rabett. Huge thanks to both for supporting us, plus Anglia Catering for providing the food. A great night was had by all and calls for “when is the next one” were left ringing in Jann’s ears. We have a new horse staying with us who is here at French’s for rehabilitation, he is a 3 year old x-race horse who has been named by staff as Boris. Boris had been stabled 24/7 since he was a yearling. Boris was rejected when he could not cope being in the racing industry. He was tuckered out the first week, as he was not used to having a paddock to mooch about in at his will. A lovely photo taken of Boris and Coral a staff member checking he was okay on his second day. Boris comes into a stable in the evening after a good 10 hours a day in the field, which is a completely different life than he has experienced over his 3 tough years. Some future events for your diaries: Monday 25 August – French’s will have a stand at The Suffolk Punch Trust’s event ‘Something about Suffolk’ a day of traditional Suffolk music, crafts, games, working horse displays and much more. Come along to support us and the beautiful Suffolk punch horses. Saturday 6 September – 80’s disco at The George, Hintlesham 7.30 to 11.30pm. Contact Jo for more information On Saturday 20th September we will be having a stall at the High School PTA Table Top Sale to raise funds and welcome any donations you may have. Do come along on the day (free admission) and enjoy a coffee and cake and see what goodies are available to buy. 11am to 1pm at the Ansell Centre. On this month’s wanted list we need any items of tack, horse rugs and equipment you no longer have any use for. Do you or anyone you know own a porta cabin, or something similar that could be donated to us? All of the staff and volunteers appreciate any help the general public give to support French’s, so please feel free to contact us if you can help with donations. 4 LIFE LANDSCAPES
News from the Garden Yesterday when I was out I met a friend who asked me whether or not I had any problems with Rosemary Beetle, and I had to admit that I had never heard of it. When I got home I looked at my standard reference book for Pests and diseases (Collins Guide to Pests, Diseases, & Disorders of Garden Plants), and it was not there. This sent me to the internet where I discovered that this is a relatively new pest in the UK. It seems to have arrived from the Mediterranean in about 1994 and seems to be spreading from the South East of the country. I then went and inspected my rosemary and lavenders, and quickly found one specimen on my rosemary, so I can confirm it is in my garden. My friend has them by the hundred. The adult is about the same size as a lily beetle, but instead of the bright red of the lily beetle it has a beautiful metallic sheen with purple and green stripes. The adults have been emerging from pupae in the soil in recent weeks. They will now mate and lay eggs. These hatch into slug like grubs which eat like mad, and then drop down to the soil to pupate and appear as adult beetles next year. The RHS is running a survey of where they are being found on the internet, so if you find any you may like to fill in the form on their site. Some insecticides work against them, but I am planning to hand pick any more that I find. It is difficult to get a picture that does justice to them, but my effort with one on a thumb nail is above. The right time to repot cacti is March/April when they are about to start into growth. This year it did not get done, and so I am taking a chance and repotting some of mine now. I use the existing pot as a former to create the correct size hole in the new pot of gritty cactus compost into which to drop the root ball with the minimum of disturbance. I use a strip of folded newspaper to hold the cactus to avoid damage to the cactus and spines in my hands. While repotting is a good time to look for cactus mealy bug, which forms white waxy deposits on the plants. I control this by brushing them with methylated spirits. So a wet May was followed by a dry June. So far in July it has been mainly dry, but we have had 3 very wet days, and as I write this more thunderstorms are promised. The 3 monthly total at the end of June was 123 mm (4.8") which is still a bit lower than the average. In June the maximum temperature was 26 Cel (79F) the minimum temperature was 6 Cel (43F) both of which are typical. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 20 Cel (68F), which is warm for mid July, but is the same as it was last year. Hints August is a good time to take cutting if you need to increase your stock. This applies to lavender, penstemon, dianthus, and many others. Think what plants you would like to increase and then check a book or the internet. It is also the right time to sow Spring cabbage like "April" or "Early Queen", and Winter Radish. Keep dead heading flowers. It makes the garden look tidy and prolongs the flowering season. Happy Gardening, John Rye

Kersey Mill Newsletter Over the past few weeks there has been no let-up with activity in and around Kersey Mill. We have been delighted with the number of visitors that have been to view the mill and to see the work in progress. With the lovely summer days we have been able to continue with the repairs to the exterior, quite a task due to the considerable decay to the timbers and windows. This is not an easy job due to the sheer height, positioning and scale of the building. Having the river and race run very close to the mill adds to the complications when it comes to maintenance, very difficult to erect a tower scaffold or indeed use a cherry picker in or across a water course. The cost of scaffolding for the entire building is in the region of £7000, needless to say on a tight budget it’s an expense we could do without. We scratch our heads! So what is the answer? We have to do the repairs but we can’t work at that height from a ladder. Bring on Bill Griffiths, Bill has trained and become very skilled at rope access, a bit like abseiling. He uses one rope to climb and another to descend whilst being secured on another with a harness. It’s fair to say he is doing a fantastic job. The rear of the Mill now has a gutter that is free of debris and works correctly. This had not been cleared for a number of years, grass and weeds were growing from it. The rotten barge boards have been repaired and there is a fresh white coat of paint to the entire back elevation. The windows are in the process of being re-glazed and repaired. Rope access is a fantastic way to work at height safely without the extraordinary costs associated with other methods. Photo is of Bill Griffiths looking like Spiderman. The recent open day saw many visitors to the mill, Mr and Mrs Elmer kindly brought along some photographs of an engine similar to the one that would have been installed in the wheelhouse. This would have been used to supplement the water driven stones. The photographs are of an engine that was installed in one of Haleigh’s Mills and looks impressive, it is currently mounted on a trailer and taken to shows. The Kersey Mill engine was removed some years ago, if anyone knows of its whereabouts we would love to hear from you. Another visitor we were delighted to see was Martin Whitworth who owns Buttrums windmill in Woodbridge. Buttrums windmill is one of England’s finest tower mills. Built in 1836 the mill is the product of the famous Suffolk millwright John Whitmore, Whitmore and Binyon of Wickham Market built Kersey Mill. Buttrums has its sails intact that still turn on windy days; it has six floors packed with milling machinery and is over 60 feet high and well worth a visit. Talking of visiting mills there are several mills within Suffolk that a certainly worth a visit and whilst in Woodbridge visiting Buttrums it would be well worth visiting the tide mill, Woodbridge Tide Mill is a rare example of a tide mill whose water wheel turns and is capable of grinding wholemeal flour. Also worth a visit is Pakenham water mill a working mill with flour grinding demonstrations regularly held. All three mills mentioned above are very different to one another and in very good repair unlike Kersey Mill, but we are working on it!!

The Second Annual Jean Guy Memorial Lecture The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Lavenham are proud to announce that The Rt. Revd. and Rt. Hon. The Lord Williams of Oystermouth (Rowan Williams) will be delivering The Second Annual Jean Guy Memorial Lecture, in Lavenham Church on Monday 1st September 2014 at 7pm. Lord Williams’ lecture, entitled “Ethics and Empathy: a new framework for moral reflection?” is the second lecture to be given in memory of the late Dr. Jean Guy, a Consultant Radiologist who after retiring to Lavenham trained to be a Church of England ‘Reader’, where she continued to serve the community until her death. The Revd. Stephen Earl, Rector of Lavenham Church said: “We are honoured and delighted to be able to welcome Rowan Williams to Lavenham Church. Dr. Williams’ time as Archbishop of Canterbury demonstrated the constant need to reflect on how the church engages with the many ethical challenges that arise today and we look forward tremendously to hearing what Dr. Williams has to say”. This event is open to all and is free of charge (although donations towards the work of the church, Registered Charity No. 1131642, would be appreciated). Refreshments will be available. Newton Green ladies have made a promising start to defend the Suffolk Cranworth Trophy they won last year. They are through to the quarter finals and play Ufford Park on July 24. In the second round against Waldringfield at Bury St Edmunds, a team consisting of some new faces looked to be wobbling after losing the morning foursomes 2 – 1. However, Newton came storming back in the six Carol Durston, Sheila Walter, afternoon singles matches, with Leighann Wordley, Lizzie Johnson four convincing victories in Sarah Williams, Di Cunningham matches tied up well before the (captain), Rosie Jackson allotted 18 holes. It meant the five overall wins necessary to achieve victory had been reached. There were two remaining games on the course, in which Newton were winning at the time, and did not need completion. Halved matches were agreed, and an official win margin of 6-3 in the competition, which is for 20-30 handicaps. From last year’s line-up, Jill Symonds and Carolyn Cocksedge had retired from the fray, and Rebecca Evans had dropped below the qualifying handicap. However, competition rookies Rosie Jackson and Sarah Williams were among those that came up trumps with convincing wins in the singles, and Newton’s line-up looks strong once more. Foursomes: Lizzie Johnson and Leighann Wordley lost one down to Margaret Knott and Jan Cropper, Sheila Walter and Rosie Jackson won 5 and 4 to Janet Liley and Mari Davey, Carol Durston and Sarah Williams lost one down to Claire Carney and Carol Everett. Singles: Jackson won 5 and 4 to Knott, Johnson won 8 and 6 to Carney, Wordley won 6 and 5 to Liley, Durston halved with Davey, Walter halved with Everett, Williams won 7 and 5 to Cropper.

The “taster” session held at Pond Field, Polstead on Saturday 12th July was a great success with over 50 people of all ages attending. For many it was their first try at fishing or the first time for a few years. For the youngsters who had the pleasure of catching their first fish the day will live long in the memory. We would like to thank all of the society members who attended and helped to make the event run smoothly, Snowy’s Bait and Tackle for providing bait for the event and especially to Councillor Brian Riley for the generous allocations from his County Councillor's' Locality Budget of £500 for fishing tackle for the junior section and £250 for directional signs for the fishery. The tackle provided was used for the event and will be available to any juniors attending society events in the future to help them develop their fishing skills. For all those who attended and would like another go and anyone who missed the event and would like to try fishing, the taster session will be repeated on Saturday 16th August. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group The 1st XI are certainly finding life much tougher in their second season in Division 1. To date only five wins have been registered, with too many batsmen struggling for form and much depending on Australian Luke Ibbs digging them out of trouble. The force has certainly been with Luke this season. He has scored hundreds against Witham and Wivenhoe and produced a remarkable all-round performance to help the side over the line against Mildenhall when it looked as if the game was beyond them. Taking 6-56 with the ball, he was the last man standing with 94 not out, guiding Hadleigh to victory after they had slipped to 93-7 chasing 174. In fact wins are at a premium throughout the senior teams. Ryan Phillips’ 2nd XI have picked up two more recently against fellow teams towards the foot of Division 4, and it is good to see some batsmen starting to find some form. The Sunday 2nd XI came close in high scoring games at Sudbury and Bury, but finally managed to break their duck at Battisford. The captain tried everything to get a win – losing the toss, batting first (ridiculous), sending his opener to counselling to break his 30-something yips, even fielding a team comprised almost entirely of Tampions (well, 6). Here is the full tally: brothers Peter, Buster and Blossom, Bloss’s sons Arran and Owen and Buster’s daughter Jasmine, making her senior debut. We believe this breaks the club record of family members in one XI, almost certainly held by assorted Claireaux’s. The most successful team currently in the club is the boys U-13s, who wrapped up the Suffolk East Development League. They won all six of their matches, including bowling St Margarets out for 22 in one game. Another successful fundraising dinner was held at Vauxhall Farm at the end of June, where Bob ‘the Cat’ Bevan entertained the gathering with sporting anecdotes, the trials of spending the evening on the Chairman’s table and the legendary Estonian question. Thank you to all who supported the event, although it would have been good to see more players attend. Unfortunately the Hadleigh Big Bash on July 13 fell victim to the weather, but it is hoped to try again on August Bank Holiday Monday. Farmer
