The Lavenham Herd of Red Polls, owned by Nick & Rosemary Thomson and part of Lavenham Brook @ Brook Farm, Brent Eleigh, was judged best Red Poll herd in the country. Lavenham Brook is thrilled and elated by this recognition. It demonstrates the quality of the whole herd, not just the show animals which you may have seen at the Suffolk Show and elsewhere. The award is a tribute to Chris and Denise Thomas who look after the animals day by day, giving each animal individual care and attention always recognising their different characters. Red Polls, native to East Anglia and amongst the longest lived native breeds, are notable for their gentle temperaments, intense curiosity and beautiful appearance. They are a very satisfying breed to keep. Brook Farm, by the Cock Inn at Brent Eleigh is open to customers and always has succulent Red Poll beef in stock. You can also buy their Suffolk lamb (in season) and medal winning English wines and heritage apple juices. The cattle are now back at the yard so come along and see the prize winning herd for yourselves. Lavenham Brook has a stall in Lavenham’s Market Place on the first Saturday of each month (10.30 to 12.30) where you can buy their meat and produce. Enjoy a free tasting of their wine and apple juice, allowing you to try before you buy! Gainsborough’s House wins Suffolk Museum Curiosity of the Year Award 2013 On the 21st October at a prestigious award ceremony held at University Campus Suffolk, Gainsborough’s House was awarded the Suffolk Museum Curiosity of the Year Award 2013 for Thomas Gainsborough’s swordstick. The winning curiosity is currently on display within the museum and is a rare personal artefact of the great Suffolk painter Thomas Gainsborough. Life could be dangerous for an 18th Century gentleman, as the artist knew from experience. He was once held up in a highway robbery and relieved of his cash and a pocket watch when travelling into London with a group of friends, including J. C. Bach the composer. The highwaymen were caught and subsequently hanged for their crimes and Gainsborough’s watch was retrieved. The swordstick was essentially a walking cane that concealed a hidden blade, a fashionable and practical accessory that was extremely popular with gentlemen of the 18th and 19th century. The award ceremony was presided over by Leslie Dolphin of BBC Radio Suffolk and attended by various museum employees from all over the county. The curiosity was voted for by the general public on the Suffolk Museums website and was up against 24 other objects from local museums. Director Mark Bills said “We are thrilled to win this award and it’s been a pleasure to be representing one of the great objects from the wealth of museums in Suffolk. I would like to thank all those who voted for us and if you haven’t seen the swordstick, please visit us soon”. Gainsborough's House, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 2EU Tel: 01787 372958 www.gainsborough.org

Kersey Mill Newsletter
We would like to wish all our customers the compliments of the season – we look forward to seeing you in 2014
As the year comes to a close there has been so much happening at t’ mill. The Maltings have once again had life breathed into them – the mill has seen the wheel reinstated within its housing and capable turning (by hand) for the first time in many a decade whilst the ghosts have been well behaved – thus far. When Steve and Alison took on the project little did they expect dedication coupled with the enthusiasm of the people who have come to help them as volunteers to help make the mill a working example in Suffolk. The help and support that has been received from so many has been quite remarkable‌thank you. There have been many finds, twists, sad stories as well as many funny ones too. Like the story of the young lad who met his maker in the cogs of the waterwheel; 15 year old Ellen who died in a freak fire caused by exploding flour dust and the tales of the river bank and the bones that were recovered from beneath the pit-wheel and the subsequent visit from the archaeologists. Many families have been in touch relating stories of their ancestor who worked, lived and played at the mill since it was built. One family, who have relatives living in America, have provided many pieces of the puzzle that is a giant jigsaw of the mills history. We even had a visit from the American branch of the Bradbrook family over the summer. Joining them on a trip to the cemetery at Kersey Church we were shown the locally cast iron crosses adorning the graves of ancestors past. The most moving was that of young Ellen who died at the mill shortly after her 15th birthday. Below is a lovely photograph of the pupils at Kersey School c1892. Ellen is towards the back wearing the black hair ribbon. During the summer there was a wonderful open day that saw in excess of one thousand people visiting the site where a number of events were organised by the friends of kersey mill, including vintage vehicles and engines, golf trick show, martial art, art exhibitions, yummy cakes, dancing and games and even Richard Webb arriving with a working model of a water mill. The wealth of knowledge that has been offered from many water mill specialists has been over whelming as the volunteers worked to get the wheel turning once again. There has also been great support in the sponsoring of the Pit-Wheel teeth. Soon it will be Christmas. We hope you will be able to visit The Mill during December with your little ones and help Santa with his elves make presents for the many children of the world from their new base in Suffolk. The magic begins with a story of how Santa found himself in Kersey Mill followed by a lantern lit walk to the mill, where the elves will be working hard. He is looking for boys and girls to help him find the naughty Elf, pack the presents and get them ready to be taken out on Christmas Eve. Mix food and feed the ponies and of course meet Father Christmas and his elves in the mill that he has transformed into his workshop. After all the excitement the children will enjoy a drink and cookie. Please book early as spaces are limited and tickets are going fast. A fund raising event brought to you by the friends of kersey mill. £10 per child accompanying adults free. Tickets can be purchased from Avis or www.kerseymill.net Newsagents or telephone 01473 829317. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you all from all at t’ Mill. Allan Scott Davies

St Elizabeth Hospice shop in Hadleigh moving to bigger premises One of St Elizabeth Hospice’s first shops has been so well supported by the Hadleigh community it is to move to bigger premises. The St Elizabeth Hospice shop in Maiden Way, which opened around 25 years ago when the charity was launched, is moving to 98, High Street. The move will take place in early December. Sue Goodchild, Head of Retail at the Hospice, thanked local people for all their support and urged them to come and see the new premises and be the first to donate to it. She said: “The St Elizabeth Hospice shop was among the first to open when the charity appeal was set up to build a Hospice for East Suffolk in the 1980s. We are proud of that history and it has only been such a success and raised so much money due to the volunteers, customers and people who have donated to this shop over the years. We hope everyone will continue to support us at our new premises and bring along donations so we can ensure all the shelves are fully stocked.” Stock can be donated to the new shop from early December or to the existing shop during November, Monday to Saturday 9.30am - 4pm. Tel: 01473 828448 St Elizabeth Hospice now has 26 shops and all proceeds help fund specialist care for people living with a progressive illness in East Suffolk, including Hadleigh, and support for their families and carers.

Howard with Jill Gould of EACH and the famous grand piano My dear readers: we all had a difficult time following the storm on Monday, 28 October. The winds brought down several big trees in the grounds of the Gibbons’ residence and my gardener Gustav has been working around the clock to clear up the mess. A number of you were without power for several days and it may be some consolation for you to know that I suffered with you. A super curry had been prepared and frozen for a dinner party on the Saturday following the storm and fortunately the curry was still frozen solid when power was resumed. Frank was driving me along the High Street one day during November and I spied a grand piano in the window of EACH the classy new retail outlet in Hadleigh of East Anglian Children’s Hospice. The piano was for sale and looked really glamorous in the window. Jill Gould, the manager of the shop, allowed me to play the piano and I popped-in from time to time to entertain the shoppers. EACH, the piano and I found ourselves on Radio Suffolk before the 9 o’clock news one morning and then we were pictured in the East Anglian Daily Times. I gather from Frank that there was even a short piece about the piano in The Sun. It was all very exciting. What a good cause. Why not ask me to make your Will and include a gift (whether large or small) to EACH. What a good thing to do for Christmas. On a plane recently, I found myself sitting next to a writer from New York who was on his way to address a literary festival in Lyon. I told him of my column and that I had recently spoken to the Hadleigh Wives’ Group affiliated to St Mary’s Church and I had ended with a musical rendition on my keyboard. It became apparent from my talk with Hadleigh Wives that there are a number of you who have titles to their properties which are not registered at the Land Registry. Do let me attend to a voluntary registration in order that titles cannot get lost. The property market is bubbling. When instructing a solicitor apart from being interested in the fee that is charged you should also consider the service that you will receive. We have a reputation for good service. It makes a difference that you can telephone and speak to me as opposed to an internet type firm where you would find it difficult to get hold of the person handling your work or indeed anyone at all. Happy Christmas, Howard Gibbons

Pink Tea Party and Annual Pub Crawl - Friday 18th October £596 has been banked so far and I still have to count the monies from the collecting tins, although I am not expecting the total to climb much more. It is thanks to everyone who came to our house with cakes etc for the tea party; everyone who went round with the collecting tins and Hadleigh’s drinking establishments who supported our efforts. All the money raised will go to our daughter, Fran’s, tribute fund in Breakthrough Breast Cancer. David and I went to a Gathering of Compassionate Friends, who offer support and friendship for bereaved parents by those similarly bereaved. This poem was read out at the Candle Lighting Ceremony and touched us both very deeply. We would like to share it with you, in memory of our Fran. Magdalen House Care Home Here at Magdalen House we would like to say a big congratulations to Miriam and her family on the birth of her baby boy and a big warm welcome to our newest residents, Irene and Neville Easy and Irene Evans. It’s been a fun month here at the home with all our fundraising, our Halloween party and fireworks display. Eleanor Grant delighted our residents with a fantastic performance of classical music, at the young age of just 13 there wasn’t a dry eye in the home. Our Rose Perry residents had an amazing time at the pantomime and thank you to Marilyn Blowers, Caroline Becket and Lyn Web for helping me make this happen. It was so lovely seeing all the happy faces and amazing smiles. Our clairvoyant evening was a great success and we were really pleased with quickly the tickets sold, we are looking forward to holding another clairvoyant evening in the New Year. With the festive season now upon us, I would like to welcome you to our Christmas Bazaar on the 14th December between 2 pm and 4 pm, it will be a fun afternoon with lots of stalls, raffle, tombola and refreshments, it will be a great opportunity to pick those last minute christmas gifts. Magdalen House would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year
News from SESAW Once again, the good folks in the ’Village Edition’ area have come up trumps! Local band, Blues2Rock raised the roof during their performance at Assington Village Hall last month and made £940 for Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare. A big thank you from SESAW to all the musicians, for organising an enjoyable and profitable evening. While everyone is rushing around trying to fit in numerous jobs before the Festive Season, perhaps it's time to reflect on those less fortunate, because it's not only humans that fall on hard times. As a result of their owners’ misfortunes, many cherished and loved pets are left in places like SESAW. The volunteers turn up, whatever the weather, and do their best to make all the inmates comfortable. They are to be applauded wholeheartedly but it's still not the same as your own fireside, even if the kennels do have heaters and the cats have electric blankets. So if you are looking for that elusive present to buy, what about sponsoring an animal by making a one off or monthly donation, to help with all the costs throughout the year? Gift packs are available on request via phone or internet. Please call 01787 210888 and leave a message or email: info@sesaw.co.uk and we will contact you. Alternatively you can make a donation online at any time by visiting: http://www.justgiving.com/sesaw On behalf of all the animals and people at SESAW, I wish you health and happiness for Christmas and the New Year. I’ve heard the girls saying a hard winter is predicted so I’ve told all the cats and dogs to leave space by the Aga for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Could you be a LIFESAVER? The Hadleigh Branch of the RNLI are seeking additional volunteers to join their small but dynamic fundraising group. The RNLI exists to save lives at sea. Each year we rescue many thousands of people around our coast and on our beaches. Our brave volunteer crews are ready to answer the call 24/7. You don’t have to be brave or heroic to be a lifesaver within the RNLI, all we are asking is for a few hours of your time to help us raise those vital funds. Do you have skills and experience you could share? We have voluntary roles for all ages and abilities, whether you’re interested in boosting our committee numbers or just helping out at fundraising event, we would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you in advance for your support. Ellie Walker, RNLI Community Fundraising Manager Norfolk & Suffolk, 07557 191872, Ellie_Walker@rnli.org.uk
We are now well into the run up to Christmas. It is the time of year when we are all thinking of what to get loved ones for gifts, and also a time sadly when opportunist thieves are on the lookout for expensive items that have been left in vehicles. Please make sure you lock any purchases out of sight, preferably in the boot of your vehicle, and when you get home make sure you remove all items and take them inside to remove the risk of your vehicle being broken into. Don’t make life easy for the minority of people who will think nothing of breaking into other people’s property in order to make some fast, simple money. Use timer switches at home to give the impression of someone being in now that the nights are darker sooner. Try not to leave presents wrapped and visible from windows. The less incentive there is, the lower the risk you have of a break in to your property. Also, if you are thinking of making expensive electric purchases, consider marking them with a security pen. We have these available at the Police station if you haven’t got one. It will be possible this winter of more snow flurries and ice cold temperatures. Make sure that you are prepared for this if using your car on the roads. Make sure your fluids are topped up, and that there are warm clothes or blankets in the vehicle should you get caught in a road closure and can’t get home. Consider taking a flask with a hot drink inside with you, and it is worth having your tyres checked by a garage to ensure they are legal and safe to use on the roads. Many people get caught out by sudden changes in road conditions. Be prepared to drive slower, and plan well ahead for your journey, making sure you allow plenty of time to get to your destination. Suffolk Police will again be taking a zero tolerance approach to alcohol fuelled crime and anti-social behaviour this Christmas. Please drink sensibly when out, and encourage others to do the same. You will not want to be the person who is arrested on Christmas Eve and has to spend the following day in Police custody. We will request any person taking part in alcohol related nuisance to leave the area they are in, and we will remove alcohol from any person in a public place if we believe there is a risk of disorder. Hadleigh and surrounding villages are a very peaceful and friendly area; let’s not spoil it over the festive period. Finally, from all of the officers and staff at Hadleigh Police Station we wish you a very merry Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year! Mandy Pcso 3108 Coleman

Travel Stop opens in Hadleigh on Friday 6th December 2013 Bridget Keevil ‘started life’ as an accountant and when told that she would not be able to combine a career with raising a family, she rose to the challenge! In 1989, Bridget heard that British Rail in Elmswell, her home village, was to demolish the run-down, vandalised and unused Victorian waiting room on the platform at Elmswell station. The County Council intervened and agreed to refurbish the place and reinstate the canopy as it had been in the olden days. They would then look to rent out the property. It was then that Bridget decided that she wanted to run her own business instead of someone else’s. But what could she do? The space was relatively small, her skills were somewhat limited if not diverse. She needed to have a business that required very little stock, very few people to work there, but something that the village hadn’t got but needed! For reasons still unknown, her mind went to a Travel Agency and stayed there! All the stock needed was brochures, she would only require a couple of people to work in the office, and Elmswell certainly didn’t have a Travel Agency (whether it actually needed one was a matter of opinion!). So, a travel agency it was to be. It was almost two years later that the refurbishments were actually finished and she could move in. During that period, travel suffered badly because of the first Gulf War and she had many people telling her that putting a Travel Agency in a village was like giving herself a rope to hang herself! However, Bridget being Bridget, she did not waiver – she had made up her mind, the research was complete, the loans in place and she knew what she had to do. So the entire concept behind the creation of Travel Stop was unique in itself. With a professional background as an accountant, the aspirations were to run her own company and were not, at that time, to run a travel agency. Anyone aware of how volatile the travel industry is will be able to appreciate just what was risked – world affairs such as terrorism can have a make-or-break impact on careers and livelihoods’ in this industry. Travel Stop was ‘born’ on 22nd July 1991. The ‘Grand Opening’ took place with Michael Lord doing the honours, along with many other local dignitaries. This attracted the Bury Free Press, East Anglian Daily Times and Anglia Television (probably because there are not many businesses which emerge from small Victorian railway platform waiting rooms!) Business steadily grew until the small team were finding it difficult to function properly in the limited space. There was another half of the building that hadn’t been refurbished that remained unused. The council were happy for it to happen, but there was no capital funds to carry out the work. Undeterred, Bridget took it upon herself to finance and carry out ‘phase 2’ of the refurbishments and soon had the honour of having her office in the old Gents’ urinals!!! Travel Stop now had all the space they were ever going to have in that building and every inch was, and still is, used. It was the start of Bridget’s ‘empire’ and however unconventional it is, it will always be very special to her. A shop that is open to the general public, providing all-round services relating to travel around the world. Whether it be an overnight airport hotel, airport car parking or a round-the-world cruise on-board the newest ocean cruiser, a new era was born. Soon, Elmswell, with the ‘quirkiness’ and uniqueness that could only come with a platform waiting room, had the locals queuing out the doors! Within 8 years, Travel Stop had significantly out-grown the premises and with its ongoing success, it could only have been onwards and upwards. Bridget ‘phoned an estate agent friend of hers and asked the chances of finding a reasonable priced property for what she wanted. ‘What a coincidence’, he said! He had just received instructions to put the old post office in Claydon on the market – ideal for what she was looking for. Just over a year later on 22nd July 1999, with Elmswell bursting at the seams, a further shop was opened in Claydon, near Ipswich. Now, 22 years later in total, Travel Stop is a well established, highly thought of business, serving not just the local community but with a nationwide following. In all, Bridget now employs 16 staff and plays a pivotal role in the business, not just as proprietor, but as a very hands-on business owner. The repeat customers who return to book are now known to her personally and many have become good friends over the years. When Travel Stop was first opened, it was intended to provide the local community with a service. It has now moved on from that and the team now in place has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the travel industry, totally over 250 years of experience between them and having travelled to well over 100 countries. Bridget has also recognised the importance in keeping up-todate with technology and has ensured her shops remain in the forefront in this area. The company has grown from an aspiration to a highly successful business.

In Claydon a property adjacent to the existing premises, a 4-bedroomed house, was converted into extra office space to take into account the expanding business. Travel Stop seems to have a habit of out-growing the premises they are in! From the very beginning, Bridget’s attitude was one of service excellence. She met with staff from other agencies at training courses she attended, and some of their company policies were shared with her. One particular agency (to remain unnamed) had the policy of 20 minutes per customer and two ‘phone calls, then get them out so that the next person in the queue can be dealt with. Many of the household named multiple travel agencies are owned by a tour operator and therefore have a bias in what they are offering the customer. The staff are actually told to switch-sell to their own brand even if what the customer comes in for is available. Bridget was horrified to learn of these practices, as her whole ethos has always been one of providing excellent service and exceeding customer expectations. A holiday will only ever be sold at Travel Stop if it is right for that customer. The staff are always encouraged to go ‘that extra mile’. For special occasions, a stretch-limousine transfer in New York would be suggested, or a helicopter transfer to Monaco. Flowers are put in the cabins and wine arranged in rooms for guests travelling on celebratory occasions, on-line check-in is completed and even luggage labels are written out – hopefully all those ‘extra touches’ that endear customers to return. As well as the leisure travel which is provided for, Travel Stop has a growing portfolio of business customers. A full range of services are offered to the business person – and what better than dealing with a local friendly office. Travel Stop has become a member of AITO (specialising in all the smaller operators dedicated to serving the more discerning clients to more obscure areas of the world), and gained membership to the Worldchoice Consortium. Bridget is a highly regarded member on the ABTA Code of Conduct Committee, and sits on the ABTA Council of Regions, representing the Eastern Region. Travel Stop may only be a small village travel agency but is miles ahead of its competitors. It is a helpful, professional and successful local business which can be trusted for all travel needs, built purely on the aspirations and guts of one individual. And Travel Stop’s third shop will be opening in Hadleigh on Friday 6th December 2013.
The Right Honourable Lord Framlingham will officially open the shop at 4pm on the day.

Greenscape Energy Case Study Mr & Mrs Gowers, Hadleigh Firstly, we would just like to clarify a couple of points from our article in last months edition, the case study of Mr & Mrs Pettitt. We would just like to point out that the amount we stated that they paid on their last Electricity and Gas bill was actually a monthly bill, not quarterly. We would also like to clarify that the figure quoted was after the deduction of some of the credit that Mr & Mrs Pettitt had built up with their energy suppliers. Hopefully this has not caused any confusion. This month, our case study is about Mr & Mrs Gowers, of Clopton Gardens in Hadleigh, who were kind enough to let us feature them and to explain their situation to us. Many thanks to them for their generosity and time. Mr & Mrs Gowers had been thinking about Solar for some time as they were becoming increasingly disillusioned with the ever-increasing Energy prices in this country. Their interest was particularly aroused when a family member decided to go ahead and have Greenscape Energy Ltd install a Solar PV system for them, and they took the opportunity to meet with us, and to get some Our installation in further information. After taking a Clopton Gardens Hadleigh little while to consider their next move, they signed up and had us install a 16 panel (4kw) system, back in May of 2013. The interesting thing about Mr & Mrs Gowers installation is that it is split over the East and West facing aspects of their roof. They have 10 panels on the back of their house, and another 6 on the front. Many people still work under the assumption that for Solar to be truly beneficial the system must be mounted on a South-facing roof. Whilst this was true in the past, the advances in both panel and inverter technology now mean that installing solar panels on an East/West roof is a viable alternative to a south facing roof.
Mr & Mrs Gowers have only had the system operating for 6 months, and that was during the excellent Summer we have had this year, but they have still received just under £400 in payments from their Feed-in Tariff already. Although there will be a drop in the production on any Solar system during the Winter months, simply due to the shorter daylight hours, it is still anticipated that they should generate an income in excess of £600 from their Solar system in their first year. Mr & Mrs Gowers also had an Immersun device fitted at the time of installation, a device that uses the excess electricity that would normally be exported back to the National Grid to heat the hot water tank in the house. All that is required is for the hot water tank to have an existing Immersion heater. Mr & Mrs Gowers are being paid for 100% of the electricity that they generate. On top of this they are also making savings on bills by using the free electricity instead of purchasing it from their energy providers. With the Immersun, Mr & Mrs Gowers are also effectively being paid to heat their own hot water. As with Mr & Mrs Pettitt from last month, Mr & Mrs Gowers found that during the Summer months (May-October) they were actually able to turn their boiler off completely, and that the only Gas they were using was for cooking. Mr & Mrs Gowers said how happy they were with their decision to install Solar with us. The hands-on, friendly approach from everyone at Greenscape Energy, and the distinct lack of any ‘hard sell’ tactics from us, mean that Mr & Mrs Gowers wouldn’t hesitate to recommend us to anyone. If you would like to find out more about Solar, for us to advise you on what the best Solar solution could be for your home, or to simply get some further information and a free, no-obligation quotation, please get in touch with our friendly team today, we’ll be more than happy to help. To find out more please call 01473 655655 www.greenscapeenergy.co.uk

What do you get when you fill a 15th Century church with twinkling trees and candlelit cake-laden tables?
Boxford Christmas Tree Festival Back by popular demand for a second year the festival will run on 6th, 7th & 8th December. The success of last year’s charity event, which brought together thriving Boxford businesses, clubs and societies, has allowed us to broaden its scope, doubling its size so that it will be bigger, better and packed with family fun. Over 30 stunningly decorated trees (ethically sourced) will provide a sparkling backdrop to 'ABIGAIL’S POCKET PANTO' on Saturday 7th 1011am, followed by ‘POP-UP GOES FRENCH’ with gateaux galore, both events suitable for children aged 3-10. Adults will be able to indulge in locally produced cake, biscuits, soup and bread in the POP-UP CAFE, which will be manned by 50 local volunteers to cover the 21 hours it is open. All comers can enjoy stocking up on home-made pastries and baked goods from the CAKE EMPORIUM while warming their hands over a glass of MULLED WINE. On its first outing last year the festival proved a great draw, with 600 visitors. Perhaps the enormous success of this event, can be attributed in some part to the fact that Boxford doesn't usually have a café, making it a wonderful opportunity to bring this thriving community together in the magical setting of a glittering fir tree-filled medieval church. Be sure not to miss this great family event. Admission: Adults £1, children under 12 free Friday 6th Dec, 12pm-6pm, Saturday 7th Dec, 10am-7pm Sunday 8th Dec, 12pm-6pm

Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lucy Jackson Christmas Concert Sunday, December 8th 6.30 pm in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Hadleigh Our programme is now complete and we look forward to seeing everybody again in Hadleigh Catholic Church on Sunday 8th December for what will be a very popular evening. As usual there will be four carols to sing accompanied by the Orchestra, and one of them will be ‘Good King Wenceslas’ with its very atmospheric 3rd verse accompaniment (struggling through the snow and wind). Pieces will include the ever popular ‘Hunt’ from Vivaldi’s Four seasons, Abba Music used in the film ‘Mamma Mia’, popular tunes from Rigoletto, Herold’s ‘Clog Dance’, some Mozart and a piece by our conductor’s husband called ‘Parade’. We expect the programme to take about an hour or just over. Entrance is free, but we will ask you to make a donation as you leave which will go towards expenses, and a donation to St. Joseph’s. Following on from last month’s article written by one of our family’s female foster carer we detail her husband’s thoughts on being a foster carer. ‘As part of the fostering assessment, my wife and I were required to attend ‘Skills to Foster’ training; I was apprehensive at first as I had no idea what to expect. When we arrived we were introduced to other potential foster carers so knowing that we were all in the same boat enabled me to relax. We had a very good time going through the training and met some very like-minded people who we keep in contact with. Once our assessment was complete we attended a ‘Panel’ which was nerve-wracking. We were asked a few questions, Panel then deliberated their decision and we were told that we were successful. Shortly after Panel a foster child was placed with us. I am mainly around at weekends and when I get home from work during the week. I was angry when my wife phoned me to say that our foster child had seriously misbehaved. I was worried as to how I would react when I got home - I took a deep breath and went to speak to our foster child. I mentioned the house rules and that they had accepted these rules when coming into our house. I pointed out that their activity was not good and they needed to think about how they would feel if the same had happened to them. They seemed to grasp what I had said and I was proud of myself for the way I dealt with it. Over the months when incidents have happened I have found different ways of dealing with the situations. On one occasion I said to our foster child that it is a far better feeling to be thanked for helping someone than it is to be getting told off for doing something wrong. Later I heard that, when back at school, they helped a teacher to open a door, without being asked to do so, so something I said must have stuck. I have spent a lot of time with our foster child and am asked very interesting questions. I hope that they will take on board what I tell them and put it to good use some day. Suffice to say we have only just begun to travel along the fostering path. I am pleased with what I have learnt and how I have dealt with some situations since we have had our foster child and I can only hope that we can make a positive difference in this child’s life’. We hope you found this informative and if this has inspired you to find out more about fostering please look at our website www.easternfamilyservices.com or call us on 01206 299775 - we are more than happy to answer any questions and help you think about whether fostering is right for you and your family.

Monks Eleigh Community Shop and Post Office On Wednesday 26th March 2003, the post office and village shop closed for the last time after there having been both services in the village for more than a century. The village had also lost two pubs and local garage. As a result, as one resident put it, “our once friendly village has become a ghost town as personal contact and community services have been lost.” Following a Public Meeting, and a Questionnaire being circulated around the village the decision was taken to set up a Community Shop in the redundant brick built barn adjacent to, and within the grounds of The Swan Public House. The owners of the Swan Pub, Carol and Nigel Ramsbottom gave permission for the barn to be refurbished as a Community Shop. Whilst the building was, at that time, in disrepair, it was and remains, ideally situated as it lies at the heart of the village, just off the village green. This meant that both the shop and the post office would remain central to the village with the added advantages of improved access for pushchairs and also the provision of some off-street parking. A team of dedicated residents worked tirelessly to overcome barriers to the proposed development and created the platform for the Community Shop and Post Office to grow and develop into vital village assets that meet the needs of all village residents. The Post Office, located in the refurbished barn, has its own dedicated working space and offers different yet complementary services from those offered by the shop. The shop and post office both opened their doors on 11th December 2003. Miss Mandy Coll was appointed Post Mistress. In its current form, the shop itself is co-ordinated and managed by a Management Committee, supported by a team of approximately 50 volunteers, all of whom work alongside the one paid employee, Janet Mackie, who has been the Shop Manager for the last seven years. Regular customers and visitors new to the village remain surprised by the range and variety of products that are packed into such a modest space. Across the whole village there is huge and enduring respect for all those who worked so hard to ensure the community has retained these vital services. We all aspire to celebrate the next 10 years and more in our thriving Community Shop and Post Office. John Naylor, Chairman of the Shop Management Committee

Whatfield Players On Sunday 13th October twenty villagers and players members, gathered to watch Bert and Molly Eastman, unveil the memorial bench to Mona Bruce and Robert James, sited on the village field. The players promoted this tribute to acknowledge the contribution they made to village life, and the support they gave to our drama group. ‘It Must Be Love’ played to audiences on both nights. The players thank all who came for the warmth of their reception and their generousity. With our bills paid we are assured that St. Margarets church will be pleased with the funds raised, more details later. Diane A.

By ex-punk rocker Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church It takes a lot of courage to admit that you cannot feed your family and to seek help outside your own means. Furthermore, it often comes with more than a twinge of shame. Referrals for Storehouse Foodbank emergency bags have more than doubled since April. But it is the stories most that break my heart. However, we are busy trying to make a difference. And if you are one of those who have donated food, thank you. This Christmas, in partnership with Waitrose and local organisations, Storehouse Foodbank is putting together a large number of emergency food hampers to give to families and individuals in crisis who live in our local towns and villages. We hope to provide up to 200 hampers. But people often ask me if their donations ever change anything. You bet. There was a young mum who came in to see us for emergency food who had been a victim of domestic violence. Her children had been taken away from her because she had become mentally ill and drug-dependent. She was rehoused, but had no furniture. Storehouse and the church did what they could, which included contacting a qualified handyman who they were told could lay carpets. It turned out that he was helped by Storehouse in the past. He did the whole job for free. Christmas is a time for hope. As the church behind Storehouse Foodbank, we would like to invite you to join us this Christmas to reflect on that hope through three special events: Shine – young families’ fun crafts and music afternoon, 3-5pm, Saturday 14 December at the Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury. Christingle – the increasingly popular family church service, 10.30am, Sunday 22 December, The Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury. Includes craft activities. GLOW – Community Carol Service, 6.30pm, Christmas Eve, Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury. ‘Carols by glowstick’ with readings read by people in our local community’. Mulled wine, soft drinks and mince pies served from 6pm. Have a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful New Year. God bless you. Stour Valley Vineyard is an informal family church that meets on Sundays 10.30 am at the Delphi Centre, Newton Road, Sudbury (Please note the first Sunday of the month service is at 6.30pm). This winter why not organise an event for Macmillan Cancer Support? People living with cancer sometimes have to turn off their heating to save on their heating bills, why not raise some money for Macmillan to help people to stay warm this winter. Macmillan Cancer Support give financial support to people when they need it most. The average Macmillan grant is £330 and this can make a real difference to the lives of people living with cancer. So why not organise a firework display, Christmas party, or make a donation to help Macmillan raise more money. Every day in the UK another 889 people are diagnosed with cancer. We want to be there to reach every one of them and we need your help to do this. For more information please call Georgina Daniels on 07968 731703 or email gdaniels@macmillan.org.uk

The Country Threads Group After months of preparation, creation and stitching everything came together for the Country Threads group at their recent charity craft sale. Their colourful handiwork was displayed to advantage to tempt customers to part with their money for two noteworthy charities St Elizabeth Hospice and We Are Macmillan Cancer Support. There was also a stall selling the cross stitch kits and hobby books which had been donated by a Dutch well-wisher and the new Fidelis recipe book ‘Just Desserts’. Visitors shopped, browsed and stopped for coffee and a delicious homemade soup lunch. After all this activity group leader, Mavis Gordon, was delighted to discover that their hard work had yielded £1,300 for their chosen charities. Special thanks to all who helped on the day inside and outside the kitchen and to those who came along and spent their hard earned money. Unsold items will be available at local charity outlets and the craft gifts will be sold at the Hospice Reloved shop at Aldeburgh. Last but not least, a massive vote of thanks to the local businesses here in Hadleigh, Elmsett and Ipswich who donated raffle prizes, bread, and money to help raise such a fantastic sum and to the many unseen helpers who contributed so much. Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net Enriching Learning and Raising Aspirations On Wednesday 20th November, our pupils participated in a wide range of enrichment activities where they worked collaboratively with others developing their personal, learning and thinking skills. Year 7 took on the role of being interior designers. The pupils had to calculate costs, volumes of paint and areas of flooring, as well as deciding on furnishings whilst working within a budget. Year 8's pupils attended a "learning conference" which looked at the skills involved with learning. Sessions included: My Learning Brain, How Emotional Intelligence affects learning, The Mantle of the Expert, Sound waves make brain waves, Philosophy for Children and Building Leaning Power. These sessions help students build positive attitudes for learning which help students develop. These attitudes are focused around the 5R's: resilience (the will to be self-disciplined, stick with things, avoid distraction and temptation, defer gratification and bounce back after disappointment), resourcefulness (the inclination to take initiative and be inventive in solving ones’ own problems), reflectiveness (the habit of thinking back over experiences and learning from them), reciprocity (the inclination to be co-operative, mutual and inter-dependent) and responsiveness (adaptability, adjusting to changing circumstances, a desire to grow) Our Year 9 pupils embarked on an enrichment trip to Essex University designed to promote the benefits of higher education and learning about the life of a university student. The trip will included seminars on choosing a variety of courses and entry requirements as well as an opportunity to attend an interactive session run by university students where our pupils can discuss every aspect of student life. Year 10s spent the day at one of our local sixth form colleges - Colchester 6th Form College and Suffolk One College for a taste of Post 16 life. They experienced taster lessons in a variety of subjects, tours of the colleges and the facilities/courses on offer, time to enjoy the 6th Form lifestyle with existing students supporting them and sharing their experiences. Year 11 experienced a Post-16 Enrichment Day. During the morning pupils attended workshops given by post-16 institutions including Suffolk One, Suffolk Apprenticeships, Colchester Sixth Form, Colchester Institute to name a few. The aim of these workshops was to highlight opportunities available to our pupils at Hadleigh, what they have to offer, their expectations and the application process. Year 11 pupils also wrote their Personal Statement, learned useful revision techniques and created a revision timetable for their mock exam revision. Year 10 Students Have a Whale of a Time! On the 12th November, Year 10 Art students spent a day on the beach in Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings. The students had a chance to visit and sketch ‘The Scallop’ that was designed and coproduced by Maggi Hambling – which they had been studying in their Art lessons. Who goes to Aldeburgh and doesn’t have fish and chips? The students had fish and chips at ‘The Golden Gallion’ before heading off to begin the second part of the trip, Snape Maltings Art Gallery. They experienced a range of artistic techniques including sculptures, pottery and paintings. Mrs Reed – Our newest addition to the Art department, said: “I thought it was brilliant”. Ellen Clarke (10G) stated: “It was a good experience as we got to see things to inspire our ocean themed art work.” Silence for the Soldiers Were you wearing a poppy this Remembrance Day? Hadleigh High School thoroughly support this appeal, moreover creating awareness by having two minutes of silence to reflect on the lives of the soldiers in conflict. In addition, we enabled pupils to donate and buy poppies in order to fundraise for ‘The Royal British Legion’ who aid the Armed Forces and their families. Buzzing for ‘Bookbuzz’! Year 7 pupils were delighted to receive their free books from ‘Bookbuzz’ – the National Reading Programme aimed at encouraging reading for pleasure, independent choice and a whole school reading and writing culture. There were a total of 12 books to choose from. To help the pupils make their decision 30

they watched a video of the authors talking about their books. The most popular books were: ‘Dark Lord; Teenage Years’ by Jamie Thomson, ‘Butterfly Summer’ by AnneMarie Conway, ‘My Best Friend and Other Enemies’ by Catherine Wilkins and ‘Young Sherlock Holmes; Death Cloud’ by Andrew Lane. Duke of Edinburgh – Expedition Postponed Unfortunately, due to the bad storms during the half term, the practise expedition (1) is been having to be rescheduled. A date will be confirmed later. Talented Tempest cast take the stage by storm After many weeks of careful preparation, students performed their version of ‘The Tempest’ at Dance East in Ipswich on 14th November. This formed part of the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival and is a tremendous opportunity for students to perform at a professional theatre with all the benefits of their technical facilities. The show was extremely good with some interesting choreography and music played live on stage to help evoke the strange atmosphere of the island. Walking into the lead – more talent at Hadleigh High! One Year 7 student – Katie-May Harper - has just taken the starring role in a pantomime recently performed at the Apex in Bury. It was her first appearance with the company 4seasons and she walked straight into the part of Peter Pan! Hard working Year 11s The Year 11s have undergone their first Maths and English GCSE exams, and we have high hopes for them. They have been working extremely and have an excellent attitude. Maths Teacher, Mr Lloyd stated: “All of the pupils felt they could tackle the questions and left the exam feeling confident. They were pleased they took extra revision classes after school and on Saturdays and are thankful for the teachers’ help.” A massive well done to all Year 11s! Year 8s Tackle Tournament The Year 8 rugby team went to Colchester Rugby Club and won every single game played. All of the lead rugby team were there: George Grigg-Pettitt, Harvey Clements, Oscar Farrow, Harvey Sharpe, Felix Vardon-Barber, Charlie Kavanagh, Ollie Jeeves, Ashley Foster, Will Busfield, Barney Williams, Finlay Sinclair, Joseph Stiff, William White, Oliver Graham, Harry Lloyd and Daniel Squirrell. They also won the tournament Suffolk league which is a tremendous achievement and hopefully this is the start of something even greater. Well done lads! Cross Country All those students who have qualified to take part in the Suffolk Cross Country trials on Saturday 7th December have received a letter. The reply slips need to be returned to Mr Davy as soon as possible, even if they don't want to run. I need to let the organisers know how many of our students intend to take part. Pottery Throwing Comes to Hadleigh High Artist Susie Jenkins visited Hadleigh High School on Friday the 15th November. Susie is a ceramic artist and she is a former student of Hadleigh High School. She spent the day with the Year 10 GCSE students showing them how she creates her artwork and how to test glazes. Susie’s work is inspired by the ocean and as the Year 10 students are themselves creating artworks based on the theme of the ocean this was an excellent opportunity for them to work alongside a practising artist and gain knowledge and experience. Parent questionnaire All parents/carers have received a questionnaire to fill in, considering the schools resources, teaching and development of the school. This questionnaire is devised by Kirkland Rowell. Parents play a key role in their child’s education and, therefore, it’s essential to have parents contributing their feelings about the school’s current performance and its future development. Staff and pupils have also responded. Midday Supervisor Wanted £6.38 per hour – 1 hour per day, 5 days per week (term time only). Required as soon as possible, to join a friendly and committed team of midday supervisors. Contact Karen Bark, Business Manager, at the school on 01473 823496, or email kbark@hadleighhigh.net. From all of the students and staff at Hadleigh High School, We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
Freedom from Fear ‘finale’ aims to end anti-social behaviour in Suffolk stores
The Kersey Bell The Street IP7 6DY The Bell at Kersey, a beautiful 14th Century Inn with traditional open fires
Garrick Way, Ipswich L-R Christine Henry, USDAW, Cllr Ellesmere, Leader Ipswich Borough Council, Chris Shields PCSO, Roger Grosvenor Executive Officer - Retail, Jamie Treloar, Head of Security, East of England Co-op with Easo of England Co-op Directors, Co-op store managers and staff and representatives from Suffolk Police A month long ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign, organised by the East of England Co-operative Society to tackle anti-social behaviour in its stores, drew to a conclusion with a series of in-store events to highlight to customers and local communities the issue of violence and abuse to shop workers. Respect Week (11 – 15th November) saw staff from 15 co-op stores across Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk take part in a series of informative, one-day events to help spread the word about anti-social behaviour and encourage shoppers to do their bit to help keep stores safe and welcoming places. Launched by the East of England Co-op on Wednesday 2 October, the Freedom from Fear campaign was inspired by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers’ (USDAW) week-long campaign to raise awareness with the public that staff and shoppers have the right to work or shop without the fear of anti-social behaviour. During the campaign, Co-op staff joined forces with colleagues, local police and union representatives to better understand anti-social behaviour and gain the skills and training to tackle it. Roger Grosvenor, Executive Officer – Retail for the East of England Cooperative Society said; “We have seen a gradual increase of reported instances of anti-social behaviour over the past few years and, as a community based ethical retailer and employer, we believe that our staff and customers have the right to work and shop in a safe environment.” “Respect Week is a great opportunity to spread the word amongst our staff and customers that anti-social behaviour, whether that’s verbal abuse, unruly behaviour or physical attacks, is unacceptable. As we approach the Christmas shopping period, the stress on customers and staff can grow so it’s an especially important message to get across now.” One of the sparking points for anti-social behaviour, and one likely to cause discontent among some customers over the Christmas period, is Challenge 25. New law requires sales advisers to demand proof of age from anyone attempting to buy alcohol who appears to be under the age of 25 – alcohol can be bought by those aged over 18 with proof of age. During Respect Week, customers could take part in a challenge to guess the age of a range of people – to understand just how difficult this can be. Christine Henry of USDAW said; “We were thrilled to see an ethical retailer like the East of England co-op take up the challenge to do as much as they can for the safety of their workers. The campaign has been a great success and paves the way for further partnership working between business, police, unions and local communities to help stamp out anti-social behaviour from the work place.” East of England Co-operative foodstores in Suffolk that hosted events as part of Respect Week were: Old Barrack Road, Woodbridge; and Garrick Way, Springfield, Whitehouse and Ravenswood in Ipswich. The East of England co-op aims to roll out further training and support to other Suffolk stores over the coming months.

As I look out from my room I often witness the wonders of our Centre. Perhaps it is more poignant at this time of year as Christmas fast approaches and with it fresh beginnings; new hope; a New Year bringing with it good will and good intentions for the future. This is a story of one of us; yes, a pony from The Herd, although not from The Shelley Centre but from one of our affiliate RDA Centres, and appropriately, her name was Jingle Bells. Her origins were in itself sad in that her dam (Mother) was removed from irresponsible owners and placed in a Rescue Centre where Jingle was born; from where she was re-homed with a loving family. This family donated Jingle at the age of six years to the RDA as a thanksgiving following the safe birth of their own child in spite of the mother having been given Thalidomide while pregnant. The Centre Founder takes up the story‌‌She took to the job instantly, was energetic but totally quiet. Coincidentally, all of the Group’s young children were themselves six year old Thalidomide victims and Jingle looked after every one of them: some in a basket saddle and, for those with legs, on a normal saddle. The special day which all of the Helpers will never forget was when seven year old David, who had no arms, rode Jingle around the school, totally alone, steering and stopping with the reins attached to his stirrup irons. The Helpers held their breath and tears rolled down their cheeks, but Jingle just trotted on, doing her job. As David stopped her he had no hands with which to give her a pat so he leant down and kissed her mane‌‌Some years after, Jingle was retired. One sunny day she quietly died in her paddock, as she had lived, and was buried there, wearing her little pink tailor-made New Zealand rug – a gift from an admirer some years before. Had it not been for this little pony and the many Helpers, David and those like him would probably never enjoy the freedom and independence which riding can give. We at The Shelley Centre will gather on Saturday 07th December for our annual Christmas Carol Service in Shelley Church; a most moving and enjoyable event, and I’m sure Jingle will be with us‌‌In the meantime, from me Ebony, The Herd, Helpers and Riders of The Shelley Centre, may we wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year‌‌I’ll be back with another Ebony’s Blog in January 2014! Mr Phillip Bland kept the club enthralled with his talk on fruits and fruit growing and I am sure everyone must have learnt something of interest, even if they aren't in the position to be able to grow fruit themselves. He fully covered the whole subject from planting training and upkeep to varieties of top fruits, cane fruits and beyond. There were many enlightening comments on the "progress" in the development of modern varieties. It would seem that a good few of these varieties depend on sprays etc to keep them disease free and need to be replaced every few years as they are susceptible to virus attack! Haven't we all heard that before as in the over-use of antibiotics? What happened to all those old favourites grown by our parents and grandparents, all they seemed to suffer from was aphid attacks! Well being the dinosaur I am, I still have some! The fruit they produce may not be the size of the supermarket ones or as good looking, but ask my children about the flavour!? The next meeting is on the 9th December and is our usual (Diabolical) Quiz and beano. No Meeting in January. Ruth Allen 822323

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts The gale on the 11th of October was followed by a much worse storm on October 28th. Most gardens suffered some damage, and in my case I lost another substantial bough off of my Ash tree. This time the falling timber did not significantly damage anything else, but still meant more wasted time clearing up when I would rather have been roughly digging over the vegetable patch. Now the ground is rather wet, and as the sun loses its strength will remain so for some time. I need to get some more tidying done in my greenhouse. My usual collection of half hardy plants are in there plus my dahlia tubers, which are drying off, together with some bowls of hyacinths and daffodils which will decorate the house later. All dead leaves need clearing out to reduce the risk of mildew, and there needs to be a hunt for slugs and snails so that they do not have an enjoyable Winter eating my plants. There appears to be more problems appearing with regard to EU regulations on Plant Propagation Materials (ie Seeds). Back around May there was some serious campaigning to change the draft regulations, and some exemptions were agreed. It appears that some of the exemptions have now vanished from the actual Draft Law. Why should we worry? Well amateur gardeners have different requirements to commercial gardeners, and at present enjoy a good choice of seed which the seed merchants sell, but the seed merchants only sell small quantities to the amateur market compared with the large quantities sold to farms and market gardens. If all seeds need to be registered at say ÂŁ1000 per variety, seed merchants are inevitably going to reduce the range of seeds available. There may well be some public campaigning over this, or it may be settled amicably. Weather Records In October at Kersey there were 87.2 mm (3.4") of rain, which is about 170% of our average rainfall. This pushed the 3 month figure up to 175.6 mm (6.9") which is slightly above average . It also means that the ground is very wet, and is unlikely to dry out for some time. In October the maximum temperature was 20 Cel (68F), which is a couple of degrees warmer than average. The minimum temperature for October was 4 Cel (39F) which is again a couple of degrees warmer than normal. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 7 Cel (44F), which is 2 degrees warmer than average for mid November. Hints In December the popular point of view is that there is nothing to do in the garden, but if you have got a decent sized garden there will almost certainly be jobs that need doing. The exact ones will vary with the garden, but if you grow vegetables and have empty space it will be worth digging it and leaving it fairly rough for the frost to break down. Then we have already had some very strong winds, so it will be worth looking at fences and pergolas to see if they need any repairs. In my case the braces on both by blackberries and raspberries need replacing. It is easier to see what you are doing in Winter than when they are covered by leafy plants. It is also a good time to look at stakes on fruit trees and roses, and ensure that they have not rotted, and that the ties are not so tight that they are restricting growth. A number of you reading this will be wondering what to give a gardener for Christmas. My suggestions are that you avoid gimmicky tools unless you know that is what he or she wants, and stick to something safe like a Garden Token perhaps supported by a catalogue from your favourite nursery. Wishing all my readers a Happy Christmas and Good Gardening in 2014, John Rye

Have your say on East House For many years East House in George Street has been empty and now they wish to build 2 houses inside it and take over half the green land behind it. After getting over 140 surveys back from the public via our website and paper ones posted in the library we presented your thoughts to Babergh at the public showing of the new plans. The message was simple, as small group of 4 of us made a website and asked the residents of Hadleigh what they wanted and what was missing in Hadleigh. The question was why couldn't Babergh do this and consult the public what they want, rather then just build more houses. Hadleigh is getting bigger and bigger, more and more houses are being built and I believe more in the future are planned to. With more people coming to Hadleigh don't we think Babeugh should be looking at more activities and ask the public what they want? We believe we have a public right to bid on East House and you can help to fill in our survey on our website www.openeasthouse.webs.com Please help us save this historical landmark in Hadleigh before its too late

Catalytic Converter Marking Police Community Support Officers from Babergh East SNT in Hadleigh are holding a Catalytic Converter Marking event on Saturday 7th December 2013 between 0830 -1230 hours at Crockatt Garage Ltd, 3 Seager Court, Crockatt Road, Lady Lane Industrial Estate, Hadleigh IP7 6RL. We are once again experiencing a rise in thefts of Catalytic Converters especially from vehicles with a high ground clearance such as 4x4s, Ford Rangers, Mercedes Sprinter and Iveco Vans. These vehicles are easier to target as it is easy to crawl underneath and remove the converter which usually only takes a matter of minutes. Family vehicles are also welcome to attend this event. Come along on Saturday 7th December and we can mark your converter and record your index, so that if your converter is ever stolen we have the possibility of tracing it should it turn up at a scrap yard. This service is offered free of charge by Crockatt Garage and Suffolk Police. PCSO 3173 Julia Bignell

The Tudor Housing Revolution A Talk by John Walker Little Waldingfield History Society was most pleased to welcome John Walker, one of Suffolk’s leading architectural historians, to the Parish Room on November 13th. As previously promised, John showed us how dwellings evolved during this period and what present day medieval houses would have looked like in their original form, a feat he achieved by artfully altering numerous photos, adding or removing doors, windows, rooflines and sometimes whole ends of houses from their current layouts. It was also fascinating to discover that the developments that actually happened, somewhat belatedly by up to a hundred years in East Anglia, now make perfect sense after hearing an expert speak passionately about a subject he clearly loves. Wood was expensive in Tudor times, so as little as possible was used, giving rise thinner timbers, changed beam layouts and half timbered houses with wattle & daub between the timbers. Fireplaces and chimneys also rapidly evolved, leading to upper floors, whilst larger windows with small panes became popular with the rich, giving rise to the many lovely houses seen in Lavenham, Hadleigh and elsewhere today. Most interestingly to your writer, it appears there were many timber framed chimneys back then, though few survive to this day; apparently they were pretty good, though one suspects many must have burnt down over the years. Should any lucky reader have one in their house today, please try and preserve it for tomorrow and the day after! We also learnt that many apparently Victorian brick built houses are actually medieval timber framed buildings with a brick outer skin, and after John's talk, the audience will be able to work this out by themselves; its all about looking at the basic layout of houses and the positions of doors, windows and chimneys – enthralling stuff. Our next talk is on December 11th, when we are absolutely delighted to invite Jane Gosling, an expert from the National trust, to talk on “Boom and Bust” in the Lavenham Wool Industry. In the 16th century this picturesque village was the fourteenth wealthiest town in Britain – just think about this fact for a minute - paying more tax than populous cities such as York and Lincoln. This wealth derived from the quality of its renowned blue woollen cloth, which was in great demand, and all this from a population that never exceeded 2,000, a figure that is very similar to the present day (population in 1801 was 1,776, that in 2001 was 1,750). However, by 1525 the bubble had burst. The demise of the cloth trade, for which Lavenham was rightly famed, meant that the merchants had left looking for their next new venture. The local population was unable to maintain the timber-framed buildings, which had previously been funded by the enormous wealth created by the trade, and the buildings began to crumble. By the 17th century there was a threat of mass demolition. The situation was so severe that the Lord of the Manor took his tenants to court to prevent the destruction. Thankfully, Lavenham has since recovered and its many glorious timber framed buildings and wonderful Guildhall remain today, making it probably the best preserved late medieval town in the country. Come and hear an expert bring Lavenham’s history to life, and then take another wander round the town to savour your new found understanding and appreciation for the things that happened in our inherited past. End of season tennis shootout! One of the biggest events of the Tennis world calendar took place at the “O2” in London in the first week of November. The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Finals, also known as the Barclays World Finals. The top 8 ranked singles and double team players in the world come together at the end of the tennis year, to decide the champion of champions. The event takes place over 6 days with two sessions of one doubles and one singles match each day. It is one of the “hottest” tickets in tennis and people come from around the world to see it, including a lucky group of Hadleigh Tennis Club members. The group (some of whom are pictured here with their guests), saw some very competitive top class tennis in the round robin stages of the event. They witnessed an excellent doubles match and the main event of Stanislas Wawrinka defeating Tomas Berdych 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 in a thrilling encounter. The Swiss number two Wawrinka, who has had an excellent year was appearing at the event for the first time and had a very good tournament, progressing to the semi-finals. The eventual winner of the singles event maintaining his run of 20 match wins was Novak Djokovic, who defeated Rafael Nadal in the final. The event is an excellent day out and showcases top class tennis, in a very different way, at a fantastic venue. The excitement of the top players performing at their best is accompanied by lighting effects, big screen replays, pop music between games , sound effects and more - it is a unique event. If you have not seen top class tennis this is a great way to guarantee seeing the top players in a dramatic shootout. All who went this year, some for the fourth time, thoroughly enjoyed the day and are pleased that the event has been retained at the O2 until 2017. We are already getting ready to make our application for tickets next year. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week during the summer months: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. We are pleased to advise that annual membership fees have been held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (this will be charged pro-rata for new members joining the club during the season). If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or contact Paul Knowles on 07747 637147

Can you help Zoe! My name is Zoe Lewis and I am a former Hadleigh High School Pupil. Having completed my A Levels this year I decided I wanted to help people less fortunate than myself and after a lengthy application and interview I was successful in securing a place on the government funded International Citizen Service (ICS) volunteering service. I will be teaming up with Ghanaian volunteers to tackle some of the problems facing the local community. My Fund raising is a way of making sure developing countries can continue to benefit from the work of future volunteers, so it’s vital I reach my target. I’ve been working hard to think of exciting and interesting ways to raise money including, a non-uniform day at Hadleigh High School where the pupils will dress in Ghanaian colours and I perform for them at break time and lunch time, a cake stall at the lighting up ceremony, performing with my band at local venues and making tea and coffee all day at my Uncles office. I’m hoping everyone will give generously as a result of my effort! This is a unique opportunity to work alongside people from a different culture who have requested help from young volunteers to fight poverty and make a difference where it’s needed most. I’m really excited about travelling to Ghana in January for 3 months. To sponsor Zoe Lewis visit http://www.justgiving.com/Zoe-Lewis3

Men Golfers will sit on throne Golfers at Newton Green have competed for a miniature throne - and help raise nearly £300 for victims of the Philippines hurricane disaster. Two teams of 36 players took part in the annual challenge match between the ladies and seniors section of the club, with the winners lifting the Water Closet Trophy. The seniors hosted the competition this year, with section captain Bill Havers making a popular decision to Ladies captain Carol Durston divert the proceeds of a raffle to dethroned by seniors captain victims of the hurricane. A Bill Havers decision to make the men play off the white competition tees, instead of the easier yellow tees, meant they had a tough task retaining the trophy, which traditionally has the lid open when in the possession of the men, but down and firmly closed when held by the women. However, for the next 12 months the seat will be up, with the men winning 9-8, and one match being halved.
